Five months out from this year’s local body elections, Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel knows she will be facing at least one challenger for her position as the district’s leader.

Favel has already committed to seek a second term in the top job and said nothing had happened that would change that.

Yesterday the first, in what could be a line-up of challengers for the mayoralty, came forward with councillor Leen Braam confirming he would be making a bid to win the mayor’s position.

Over recent months Braam said he had talked to many people and had been approached by others who had

suggested he should stand.

“Now I’m officially confirming that I’m standing for mayor and standing for council’s urban ward as well,” he said.

His decision to step up and run for mayor had the backing of his family, Braam said.

“I think I’ve got the qualities to do this.

I’ll be a very different mayor, I’m quite relaxed and I’ve got a decent knowledge of the whole district.”

Braam said he might be an urban councillor, but he worked for the whole district.

“I’ve learned a lot this first term and I’ve really enjoyed the work I should be doing, but there are frustrations with the time we spend on things that are not core council business.”

His motivation to stand for mayor came from wanting to give something back to the district that had been home to his family for 40 years, he said.

“I know I’ll have to work for this but I’m standing for the whole community.

We have to stop this urban/rural divide.

To fix problems we all need to work together.”

With five months to run until the October 12 local body elections, Braam said his decision to declare his mayoral intentions early should make no difference around the council table. It would be business as usual.

Shots fired at Boulevard hearing

Accusations of sabotage and questions over event profits were tossed around Ashburton’s council chamber yesterday as two groups battled to win the right to hold an event on East Street on the same day.

For more than 40 years the last Monday in September, South Canterbury Anniversary Day, has been tagged for Ashburton’s Boulevard Day. East Street is closed from early morning and retailers and a host of stallholders take their business streetside with the event attracting thousands of shoppers from around Canterbury.

This year history was made when a counter-claim to close the same street on the same day for a competing event was lodged with the Ashburton District Council by Carol Johns.

And yesterday the two competing event organisers had a chance to put their case to a council hearing panel, an occasion that panel chairman Neil Brown described as unprecedented.

“We’ve got two events competing for one road and I don’t think the parties can work together.

One will win and one will lose,” he said.

For the Boulevard Day group, Bob McDonald said that since he and Sue Cooper had picked up the running of the street day when the Ashburton Business Association was wound up they had poured hours of their time into ensuring the event continued.

Each year since, they had been under pressure from Johns to hand the event over to her, he said.

“We’ve had ongoing threats from Carol Johns and this has to end here so we can go ahead and get on with running Boulevard Day.” Knowing the street closure challenge had been issued, McDonald said retailers were surveyed to gauge their support and most thought the Boulevard Day group was doing a good job.

His group made around $4000 from site hire and over the years many thousands of dollars had

gone back into the community.

He and Cooper reimbursed themselves for the time given to organising the event.

“We would support any day that will help and promote our town, but don’t steal the day of a very successful and long-running

event. There are 300 other days in a year that can be made into another event. We’re saying, don’t sabotage Boulevard Day,” he said.

If another similar event such as John’s East Street Bazaar was held on the traditional Boulevard Day date, people were likely to think

it was just Boulevard Day with a twist, McDonald said.

“It would be a success because it would be nothing new, it would just be taking over the day.”

Co-founder of the street day, Russell Anstiss, said he took “absolute umbrage at Carol Johns’

blatant attempt to sabotage Boulevard Day”.

In her submission, Johns said that Boulevard Day had continued along the same format for years and hadn’t kept up with the changing face of Ashburton retail, especially on East Street.

Rather than have stalls along both sides of East Street, Johns said she would have stalls on the green side only and would leave retailers’ shop fronts clear so people could enter their shops. She would have a plenty of stalls for local groups and would do extensive advertising to attract out-oftowners.

“I am not opposed to keeping the Boulevard Day name if this is what is wanted,” she said.

She also challenged the way funds from Boulevard Day were used.

“They have stated they run it themselves and do pay themselves. They say there is no profit and they pay themselves less than $5 per hour, so in my estimation they each spend 1000 hours, which equates to 25 weeks organising an event with all the structure in place.”

Her event would return all profits to the community, she said.

“Where has the money from Boulevard Day profits been going over the past four years?”

Johns said she had lodged a street closure application because she felt Ashburton deserved better than the current Boulevard Day. “My motives are sound and genuine, ask anyone around town, I have a reputation for making things happen and getting things done.”

The panel’s findings will be released in a few days.

The council would develop a policy that would set guidelines that would be followed if two groups applied for a street closure on the same day in the future, Brown said.

Fifteen members of the public attended the hearing, while another 70 watched a live stream video. This is the largest number viewing any event streamed from the council so far in its six-month trial.

Second chance at swimming House

goes on fire in Hatfield

Learning to swim is a rite of passage for most Kiwi kids, but there are many adults who, come summer, are forced to sit on the sidelines when others are enjoying the water.

Those adults have never learned to swim and, for a growing number, swimming is a skill they’re now keen to learn.

Staff at Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre have fielded enough inquiries from adult non-swimmers that they have now started learn-to-swim classes for adults, council service delivery group manager Neil McCann said.

“We have done some adult learn to swim classes over the years, but this is the first time we’ve offered a full programme.”

That programme started last week and as well as meeting community demand, it was also part of the council’s focus on water safety, McCann said.

“It’s attracting people from a range of backgrounds who, for a range of reasons, have never had the opportunity to learn to swim.

This is another avenue we can use to ensure we’re doing all we can to keep our community safe around water.”

The current class has four students and most are absolute first-timers in the water. One student is in his 70s. The programme is a trial and, if there is sufficient demand, another class will run in term three, he said.

With the first challenger’s name in the arena, Favel was unfazed and said she would let her achievements speak for themselves.

“We have hit our stride as a council and good and positive things are happening for the dis-

trict. and I am doing the best I can for the benefit of the district,” she said.

Like Braam, she said knowing there would be a mayoral campaign looming would have no impact on business as usual around the council table.

Favel was elected as an urban ward councillor in 2010 and was re-elected in 2013. She stood as both an urban councillor and as

mayor in 2016, defeating sitting mayor Angus McKay for the top job.

Two other councillors tipped as possible mayoral candidates have yet to count themselves either in or out of contention.

Deputy mayor Neil Brown has made it clear he would not be seeking re-election to his current role as an urban ward councillor.

“I’ve decided I won’t be there as

a councillor and decisions on any other position are still pending,” he said.

Councillor Russell Ellis who stood for both the mayoralty and the urban ward at the 2013 election, did not throw his hat in the mayoral ring at the last election and said he is still deciding on his local body future. As yet he has given no hints of a challenge for the mayoralty.

Firefighters from across the district were called into action on Wednesday afternoon after a house caught fire in the Hatfield area.

The fire, which was first reported at around 2.10pm, was responded to by crews from Ashburton, Rakaia, Pendarves and Lauriston A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said the house on Hatfield Overdale Road was ablaze when fire crews arrived.

At around 4pm they still had seven crews on scene who had brought the fire under control and were extinguishing the last of the fire, he said.

A fire investigator had been called to the scene and it was believed to not be suspicious, and there were no reports of injuries.

The Rakaia Fire Brigade were also called to a house in Hatfield last week on Thursday at around 6.45pm after reports of a chimney fire, deputy chief Fred Clarkson said.

“It was out on arrival so we did our checks to make sure everything was safe and just to reassure the owners,” he said.

“It is well worth people getting their chimneys checked to make sure they are clean.

“These guys told us when we were there that they hadn’t had it cleaned in 18 months.”

This house fire comes less than a month after a house was destroyed by fire in Chertsey.

On the evening of April 22 crews were called to the Chertsey property which was destroyed by a fire that was believed to have been started by a scented candle.

A passion for a good cause

A local group of mahjong players are hoping to use their passion for the game to raise to fund for the Mid Canterbury Hospice.

The Lions Club of Ashburton County are hosting a mahjong tournament on May 31 and are hoping to get as many people along to the tournament as they can.

Jeanette Early, Ngaire Farrell, Helen Whiting and Ann Smith caught up on Tuesday afternoon for a practice session ahead of the tournament, just like many of the other small groups around the town who play the game.

“We absolutely love it,” they said.

“There are a lot of groups that play it, Waireka have a big group that play regularly, but there are a lot playing like this in groups of four in people’s houses, especially in the winter when things get colder and the outdoor activities stop.”

The group said there were plenty of challenges involved in the game, including learning the intricacies of the game, which they estimate could take up to two years.

“It is a game that you learn on the job,” Early said.

“I love a challenge and this is one that is really good for the brain.”

Mainly a female dominated game, the group said it was rare to see a man giving the game a go, but that they would certainly welcome men along to give the game a try.

“There was one man at Waire-

ka the other day giving it a go and he said he tried it 60 years ago and didn’t get it so he was back to try it again,” they said.

While the tile-based game is mainly played by those who have retired, Smith said there are younger people who are starting to develop an interest.

“My kids have gone out and got sets and have said to me ‘mum, you need to teach us how

to play’ for when they go away on holiday,” she said.

The tournament is being held at the Ashburton Seniors Centre, with registrations closing on May 24.

Registrations cost $25 per person, which includes lunch and both morning and afternoon tea, along with prizes and raffles, with all proceeds going to Hospice Mid Canterbury.

Mid Cantabrians at top of rugby tipping table

In a rugby-mad province like Mid Canterbury it should probably not be too big a shock that there are people in the district who know a bit about the game, but not many would have expected two people from the district to be top of the table in a tipping competition boasting more than 24,000 competitors.

Ashburton’s Willie Murney currently sits atop the leaderboard of the Placemakers Punt for Prizes competition, while Methven’s Carl Markham currently sits third.

The Punt for Prizes competition is a tipping competition that challenges competitors to pick the results of each round of Super Rugby, including the correct score of one game a round.

For Murney, the fact he was even top of the table came as a bit of a surprise, so much so it was not until another competitor rung him to tell him he was top of the table that he found out.

“One of the lads asked me to join, but I am not too confident about staying near the top of the table but I will just keep on doing what I am doing,” he said.

“It has all been accidental re-

ally, I have got close to picking a few scores correctly.

“I just do it on a Monday if I remember and forget about it for the week.”

Markham puts his success more down to luck than any skill.

“Based on my previous efforts in tipping comps in other years you wouldn’t expect this,” he said.

“I have been lucky, I picked the correct score in the first round (Chiefs 30, Highlanders 27), and have just gone with the favourites in all the other games.”

A keen Highlanders fan, Markham said going with his head over his heart has allowed

him to keep the points ticking over when his favourite team is involved.

“I have managed to pick them when they win and when they lose, it is just about going with your head over your heart,” he said.

While there are some reasonable prizes to be won from the competition, Markham says it is all about having a bit of fun.

“It is just a bit of fun and gives you an extra reason to keep an eye on the scores,” he said.

“There are a couple of guys that are doing it at work as well so it is good to be beating them.”

Carbon farming on agenda Mid Canterbury farmers are being encouraged to learn more about carbon farming and how it could affect their businesses.

A seminar being run by the AgriBusiness Group in Ashburton on May 30 will bring experts, and presentations from local farmers, to the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

The seminar is an initiative to come out of the Canterbury Mayoral Forum’s Canterbury Regional Economic Development Strategy, which is all about exploring ways of increasing productivity and economic development in the region.

The seminar organisers say carbon farming is more than a green initiative to plant trees.

There was an incredible range of opportunities to get involved in carbon farming, which would not only help maximise production but benefit the environment, Sarah O’Connell said.

“We want farmers to think about how climate change may affect their businesses, their environment, their way of life and their children’s future for farming.

Carbon farming is one of the great answers, with minimal farm management changes and tonnes of additional benefits.”

New Zealand agriculture needs to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions from methane by 10 per cent by 2030.

O’Connell said guest speakers included Dr Anita Wreford from the Agribusiness and Economics Research Unit and Mark Belton from Permanent Forests NZ, who would share their knowledge about carbon farming and answer questions. Local farmers would also share their experiences.

She said the Ashburton seminar was one of three being hosted in Canterbury and it would provide useful information to all farmers, including dairy, arable, sheep and beef.

The Ashburton seminar is on May 30 at 1pm in the Ashburton Trust Event Centre. Other seminars are at the Glenavy Hall – May 29 and at the Darfield Community Centre – May 31.

Balancing school and stage acter, and if so, what are they?

Sister Mary Robert is a young, innocent postulant who’s grown up in the convent. She goes from being quiet and timid, to being a strong, free and brave young woman who can stand up for what she believes is right.

Playing a reserved character has definitely been a challenge as I am an energetic and bubbly person.

What have been the highlights and lowlights, challenges and achievements, of rehearsals so far?

Every rehearsal is always a highlight, as I thoroughly enjoy working with all of the cast members and production team.

Having to travel 40 minutes to and from rehearsals is a slight pain but getting to share the ride with Sharleyne Diamond, who plays Deloris, and Emma Gilkison,

who plays Mother Superior, has made the drive more fun and not seem so long. Being an NCEA Level 2 student has been tricky, having to balance all of my school work along with rehearsals and everything else I do.

It has been a big step up in my acting and singing, having to play a more mature character which I have not done very often.

One of my favourite achievements is how my voice has developed and is still developing, having to sing high notes I have never reached before.

What are you looking forward to most about bringing Sister Act to the stage?

I get so much adrenaline whilst on stage that I can’t wait to perform alongside this fabulous cast, crew and production team in this fun and upbeat musical.

Health Minister considers dental care report NZME Health Minister David Clark is considering official advice on what dental care is provided to adults.

There are growing calls for free dental care for needy Kiwis as district health boards struggle with long queues at pain clinics and people turning up to emergency departments.

Media asked Clark’s office for documents related to publicly funded dental care, including any discussion about possible changes to what’s provided.

The Official Information Act response reveals Clark received a report from officials just before Christmas, titled Adult Dental Care and Oral Health Issues. It was withheld in full as the report is under consideration.

There is speculation among health advocates that Labour could make expanded dental care a policy ahead of the 2020 general election. Former Dental Association spokesman Dr Rob Beaglehole joined Clark’s office as an adviser last year.

Clark has repeatedly said there is “huge unmet need in dental care”, but there won’t be significant reforms this side of the election.

The Waitemata District Health Board (DHB) has confirmed support for a “comprehensive dental service for all New Zealanders”, with staff there noting long queues at pain clinics and people turning up to the emergency department (ED).

The DHB’s chief executive, Dr Dale Bramley, recently told a community and public health advisory committee that the Ministry of Health was “already considering how the dental ser-

Expert miners were due to enter the West Coast mine on May 3 to start an operation trying to recover the 29 men killed during the November 19, 2010 disaster.

The Pike River Recovery Agency (PRRA) had been working for months to purge methane and oxygen from the mine by pumping in nitrogen through pipes before they headed underground.

But the day before they were due to go in, they got an “unknown reading of oxygen” from a borehole 2.3km into the mine’s drift, where the roof collapsed in the 2010 explosions. The oxygen had the potential for a “spontaneous combustion event”.

The ministry has denied it is doing such work, but says the issue may be looked at after a wide-ranging review of the health system.

That work is chaired by Heather Simpson, a former chief of staff to ex-Labour Prime Minister Helen Clark. An interim report is due in August.

Any move to provide more subsidised or free dental care would carry a huge cost. At present about $198 million a year is spent on oral health services, with most covering universal services for children and teenagers. Adults must pay the full cost, and bills can run into thousands of dollars.

A ministry briefing to David Clark ahead of his meeting with

the dental council last October outlined the work of oral health therapists, who can at present perform restorative dental work only on patients up to the age of 18.

The council was considering following Australia and Britain in allowing oral health therapists to treat adults, and the ministry told Clark it “recognises there are potential benefits of extending the scope of practice”, including making dental work more affordable.

Clark acknowledged that advice, but said “any future changes would need to be carefully considered so that there are not unintended consequences”.

He wouldn’t comment on the report now under consideration.

Roughly a third of Kiwis have untreated tooth decay, the last comprehensive oral health sur-

vey in 2009 found. Almost half of adults had avoided routine dental treatment in the previous year, because of cost.

Dr Assil Russell, founder of Revive a Smile, which has helped 10,000 people and counting, will present a petition to Parliament in the coming months calling for a subsidy for dental care for people who need it and an increase in the age for free dental care to 20 years.

People who tried to fix their own teeth in so-called “DIY dentistry” are seen by Revive a Smile at least monthly, including Rotorua man Charles Llewell, who took a power drill to the shards of his wisdom tooth. Others leave behind roots or suffer infection.

Work and Income can give out grants of not more than $300 a year for emergency dental treatment.

Re-entry work at Pike River Mine continues NZME

They soon discovered a leaky sampling tube was to blame for the oxygen spike.

But now that the tubes have been replaced and tested, work on cutting into the concrete seal has resumed.

Pattinson confirmed to the media yesterday: “Integrity testing has been completed on all the monitoring tubes that check the mine’s atmosphere. The concrete cutting is under way, along with other preparations for re-entry.”

Anna Osborne, chairwoman for the Pike River Family Reference Group and whose husband Milton died in the tragedy, posted on the ‘Supporting the recovery of our Pike 29’ Facebook page that work was going well.

“The concrete cutting is under way, and the drillers are making good progress,” she said.

“The atmosphere in the drift is good. No date has been set yet for the re-entry but it certainly won’t

be too far away.”

At the time of the delay, Osborne admitted being “slightly” disappointed but was glad that the agency was putting the health and safety of the men going back into the mine first.

It wasn’t a showstopper, she said, and once the issues are investigated, “it will be back on”.

A ceremonial event was still held at the mine’s entrance on May 3, attended by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

Ardern sat beside Osborne and Sonya Rockhouse during the service and said the focus was entirely on the families.

“They’ve been waiting a very long time to get to this point where the active re-entry has begun, is under way, and they’ve been fighting for that for a really long time. So for me, just seeing the huge amount of emotion around that for them is acknowledgement of the work they’ve put in and the sense of justice they feel now for that finally happening.”

A security guard was seriously injured and four nursing staff assaulted at Waikato Hospital yesterday.

Waikato DHB executive director of public affairs, Lydia Aydon, said there was an incident on one of the Waikato Hospital surgical wards at around 2am in the morning.

“Four nursing staff and a security guard were physically assaulted by a patient who was receiving treatment in the hospital,” Aydon said.

“Hospital security and police attended and the patient was arrested.

“Three staff members received minor injuries and the security guard had more serious injuries.

“All were treated in the hospital’s Emergency Department, three were discharged and the guard has been admitted to the hospital.”

The female guard is reported to be in the high dependency unit.

Aydon said all staff involved had been offered workplace support.

The DHB and Worksafe are investigating the incident.

Serial rapist denied parole

A serial rapist’s hopes to return to Iraq, where he would marry his fiancee, have been dashed by the Parole Board, which said it is not satisfied women there would be safe from him.

Akeel Hassan Abbas Al Baiiaty was sentenced to preventive detention for raping a 20-year-old student in a hostel during February 2004.

It came just weeks after he was released from prison.

He had earlier been sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment after he raped two Auckland prostitutes in 1997.

Al Baiiaty would work in his family’s clothing business and hoped to move into his own home.

“His family has arranged for further counselling with a psychologist in Iraq and he also has support through the mosque,” Trendle said in the decision.

The board accepted Al Baiiaty had completed the rehabilitation phase of his sentence, but noted that the reintegration activity available to him is limited given his status as a deportee.

“He has completed a safety plan and his release proposal ap-

pears sound,” Trendle said in the decision.

“What is missing from his release plan is a reintegration meeting with his support network in Iraq where he will present his safety plan, outline his risks and the plans that he has to keep himself and the community, particularly women, safe.”

That reintegration meeting was crucial, the Parole Board ruled.

“This is a vital step in Mr Al Baiiaty’s case as it will be only his family who can provide him with support and supervision,” Trendle said.

“Put shortly, we are not satisfied as to the safety of the community in Iraq, or women Mr Al Baiiaty may have come into contact there, in the absence of a fully formed support network who will be familiar with his activities when he returns to the community.

“It is essential that they are fully informed and able to manage his risk in a different environment, albeit that risk is presently assessed as a high risk of sexually re-offending.”

The 49-year-old’s request for parole was declined, he will make another bid again in five months.

Papua New Guinea authorities are assessing the extent of damage from a powerful earthquake that rattled coastal towns on Tuesday evening.

The magnitude 7.5 quake struck around 11pm Tuesday at a relatively shallow depth of 10km, according to the US Geological Survey. It was offshore about 45km northeast of Kokopo, which has about 26,000 people.

Journalist Andrew Beatty said aftershocks were still being felt.

“The manager of a local hotel told AFP the earthquake in Papua New Guinea was “massive, absolutely massive. Very scary”,” he said.

Chris McKee, the acting director of geohazards management, said there was some damage in Kokopo as items were shaken from shelves and the power had been cut.

Garfield Tarabu, a spokesman at the National Disaster Centre, said a disaster co-ordinator was on the ground assessing the situation in and around Kokopo but they hadn’t yet gotten an update on

the extent of the damage.

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre had said tsunami waves of up to 1m were possible along coastal areas up to 1000km from the epicentre, including Papua New Guinea and the nearby Solomon Islands.

The warning has now been lifted.

Papua New Guinea is located on the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, to the east of Indonesia and north of eastern Australia.

It sits on the Pacific’s Ring of Fire, the arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean where much of the world’s earthquakes and volcanic activity occurs.

A magnitude 7.5 earthquake in 2018 in the nation’s central region killed at least 125 people.

That quake hit areas that are remote and undeveloped, and assessments about the scale of the damage and injuries were slow to filter out.

Burnett mourns Conway Colleagues and former co-stars of Tim Conway came forward to pay tribute to the Carol Burnett Show and McHale’s Navy star following his death on Tuesday at age 85. The Emmy-winning actor died in Los Angeles, and his friends and admirers remembered him by sharing clips of his work and their favourite memories of the comedian on social media. “I’m heartbroken,” Burnett said in a statement. “He was one in a million, not only as a brilliant comedian but as a loving human being. I cherish the times we had together both on the screen and off. He’ll be in my heart forever.”

Dozens of prisoners finally laid to rest NZME The microscopic remains of dozens of prisoners, most of them women, who were executed for resisting Adolf Hitler and whose bodies were used for research by Nazi doctors, were buried in a simple wooden box at a Berlin cemetery Monday.

A plaque that tells of the victims’ fate will be placed over the grave, in Dorotheenstadt cemetery, where other victims of the Nazis are also buried. The cemetery is several blocks behind the Charité, Berlin’s main research hospital.

The fragments of the prisoners’ remains were given to the hospital two years ago by the descendants of Hermann Stieve, a doctor who made a deal with the Nazis to obtain the remains of the prisoners for research.

They had been killed at the Plötzensee prison, which is in

western Berlin.

The fragments were contained on 300 glass microscopes slides, each only a hundredth of a millimetre thick and roughly a square inch in size. “With this, we can give back some of their dignity to those who were murdered,” said Dr Karl Max Einhäupl, head of the Charité, at a solemn interfaith ceremony that was followed by the burial.

After receiving the slides, the hospital turned to the German Resistance Memorial Centre for help researching and identifying the remains. It soon realised they belonged to victims of the Nazis, many of them in the political resistance.

“Only very few victims from Plötzensee have graves,” Johannes Tuchel, the research centre’s director said at the ceremony, which was attended by descendants of the victims and others whose family members

fought in the resistance against the Nazis.

Of the more than 2800 prisoners who were put to the guillotine or hanged at Plötzensee from 1933 to 1945, only 140 have known graves, Tuchel said. The Nazis did not want the prisoners to be buried, for fear their graves could become rallying sites for political resistance, he said.

“These were people who sought to push back against the Nazi dictatorship,” Tuchel said.

“They were people who tried to remain human in a time of inhumanity.”

Stieve, a professor of anatomy at the university hospital, received the bodies shortly after the prisoners were executed.

He was particularly interested in the physical effect that stress and fear had on women’s reproductive systems.

After the war, Stieve continued his research and “never saw

himself as guilty,” Einhäupl said.

He died in 1952.

About 20 of the victims have been identified from their remains. One was Erika von Brockdorff, a member of a resistance group the Gestapo called the Red Orchestra movement.

For her daughter, 81-year-old Saskia von Brockdorff, the burial ceremony brought a small measure of peace and justice.

For years, she felt she had nowhere to go to mourn her mother, other than a memorial marking the Plötzensee prison.

After a Protestant minister led the mourners in the Lord’s Prayer and a rabbi said Kaddish, the Jewish prayer for the dead, Saskia von Brockdorff threw a white rose into the open grave where the box had been lowered.

“Finally,” she said. “I have a place where I can come and remember my mother.”

Bialik busts fan Mayim Bialik’s response to trolling is head and shoulders above the rest. Brutal assault on disabled man at rest home NZME Horrifying footage has emerged of a 55-year-old mentally disabled man being violently beaten with a belt by the people who were supposed to look after him.

Joey Cason’s family had placed him in Total Care after they could no longer watch him.

But concerns were soon raised after the 55-year-old could be seen with visible injuries.

The severity of the situation soon became apparent when CCTV captured staff members

punching Cason in the face and whipping him with a belt.

One staff member at the Total Care facility in Georgia, United States, was seen belting Cason 30 times as he cowered in the corner with tears running down his face.

Video also shows staff members letting other residents hit him. Staff members were also caught taunting Cason and laughing at him.

The footage has since been released by the Cason’s family attorney Brian Harrad, saying they want to raise awareness of neglect through health-care facilities.

“These are some of our most weakest, our most vulnerable citizens.

“So, it’s important to know and watch and to see when they’re not being cared for appropriately.”

Total Care was a licensed facility for the developmentally disabled. But Harrad said Cason was anything but safe at the care home.

“I think anybody would find the video despicable,” he said.

“It was heartbreaking. It made me angry to think of individuals who were being paid to care for him were engaged in just despicable abuse.”

Five staff members accused of beating and abusing patients included Shakia Smith, who was charged with battery and abuse/neglect of an elder person in Cason’s case.

An additional five staff members at the facility were accused of neglect because they witnessed patients being beaten or saw their injuries but did not report the abuse.

Seven people total were criminally charged and fired after the investigation.

Cason has since been moved to a different facility in South Georgia. Harrad said he is doing well.

Corden slams troll James Corden refused to stay silent after one Internet troll recently made a vile comment about his son. After delivering his monologue during an episode of The Late Late Show with James Corden, the host, 40, shared a clip of the segment, which included a reference to the penultimate Game of Thrones episode, to his Twitter. One follower, in particular, was less than thrilled about the GOT spoiler and attacked Corden for the joke, going so far as to wish cancer on the host’s 8-year-old son Max. “It’s f— up you can’t even watch TV without a fat f— spoiling something… Luckily I got to see it before this, but seriously I hope his kid gets cancer,” the user wrote in a sincedeleted tweet, according to The Blast.

The battle of the polling booth A

nd then, there were two.

If for a minute we thought that this year’s local body elections was going to be a simplistic task without a twist or a turn, we were dreaming.

Nothing is ever simple.

And the chances of someone throwing their hand into the air and saying they want to have a crack at the top job in this district were always going to be high – and perhaps aren’t quite a done deal yet either.

But, at least we now have something to ponder over for the next few months – with the potential of the dilemma getting even bigger as we get closer to D-Day for final intentions to be made.

Braam’s announcement that he’s out to have a crack at the big job of mayor for the Ashburton District in October this year makes things seem that little bit more real – and certainly a whole lot closer to the day we get to head to the polls to decide who will lead the district for the next term.

It’s important that we have the ability to have a choice and Braam’s announcement at least

ensures that will happen, but whether there’s the option of two boxes from which to choose on the voting paper, or more is still very much up in the air.

Rumour has it that Braam’s name won’t be the only one sitting alongside current mayor, Donna Favel’s when it does come time to vote.

The word behind closed doors would suggest there are other contenders, quietly mulling over their options – watching things unfold before making a final decision on whether or not they’ll also put their hand up.

And if the mouse, running around on the wheel of information, is correct then the battle for the mayoralty of this district may only just be getting

warmed up.

It’s a big job, and you can’t blame anyone for wanting to take as much time as they possibly can before making a final decision.

We both want and need people who are fully committed to the role and willing to dive head first in and come up trumps for this district.

If the heart’s not fully in it, then it’s not a battle worth engaging in.

There’s no hiding from the fact that there have been significant improvements and changes implemented under the guidance of the current council and you would hope that when the new council steps into power later in the year those positive steps

forward are continued.

But the advantage of a fresh set of eyes and a slightly different perspective or outlook can create some interesting situations and many will say that’s needed from time to time to really give things a bit of a shake up.

So we now enter into an interesting time. Expect more announcements, both from those who are going to stand again, or even shoot for a job a little higher up the chain and perhaps the arrival of some new names and faces to the ring – people who believe they have the right credentials to make a difference within the community.

It’s going to be exciting to sit back and watch it all unfold.

Amateur professionalism F

or the record, it’s 3pm on a Sunday afternoon.

But the reality is that for those in front of me, it could be any hour of the day or night.

Who would know?

They’ve been at it for several days, high on adrenaline and coffee and low on sleep.

All to get the job done. The show must go on . . . and deadlines must be met.

There is no Plan B. An unsung specialist assault squad have been operating since last Friday, at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre, installing a whole new stage system and associated technical equipment.

Most of the kit is part of a consortium of New Zealand theatrical partners and the man who knows how it all fits together is here from New Plymouth to supervise the pack-in and stage construction.

There are in-built winches and travelators and all sorts of theatrical magic built into this special stage that has been erected and completely covers the venue’s own stage.

This is amateur theatre in the modern age. Near enough isn’t good enough, and audiences exposed to a myriad of highly polished television entertainment

shows won’t stand for rubbish.

Standards throughout the production have to be top-notch. In fact, outstanding. Nothing less.

The reality of this show, and this company, Variety Theatre Ashburton, is that for the most part, all the effort is voluntary, all the commitment is from locals with one aim: To stage a thoroughly engaging musical and give their audience the best night out.

A few key positions are held by hired, paid professionals, but their guidance and nurturing of talent, whether it is on the stage or off, flows down through the ranks and lifts everybody’s game.

It is a win/win situation.

It is also an eye-wateringly expensive proposition.

You don’t stage a show of this calibre in a town this size any more and get change out $100,000. Frequently now, budgets well surpass that.

It all works magnificently if

another group performs.

But unfortunately the director has no control over that particular group.

And that is the group that you are a member of.

The general public, the potential attendees, the bums-onseaters. The audience.

Every ounce of effort put in for months on end by enthusiastic local theatre people can be blown away by one thing.

Complacency.

And Ashburton is notorious for being very “leave it till the very last minute” ticket buyers.

If anything is going to send the producers of six figure shows into unwarranted anxiety, it is complacent audiences.

Behind the scenes, the wardrobe team have been adjusting and perfecting costumes for months, technical plots have been pored over, a punishing schedule of section and full rehearsals have eaten thousands of combined man-hours, and in the end it all comes down to you.

The ticket purchaser.

Sister Act. This show has it all.

Banging tunes, loads of laughs, a brilliant 12-piece band and backing singers, digital screens that skip about the stage, mas-

terful sound crafted by James Wood and brilliant lighting curated by Roger Farr of the Event Centre’s technical team.

And amongst all that, new technical apprentice Travis is honing his craft to take his increasing knowledge forward in to the myriad of shows that lie in his future.

Here, and who knows where?

It’s showtime folks!

And here’s my personal challenge to you.

Get your gang together and let’s pack out opening night next Friday.

Let’s give this well-known musical the full house first night it so richly deserves.

Let’s say “thank you” to everyone who has given up a large slice of their recent life by simply buying tickets.

That’s your role, and I reckon you’d be good at it.

Punter apathy?

Canty shepherd makes comp history North Canterbury shepherd Georgie Lindsay will make history in July, on several levels, when she takes part in the Young Farmer of the Year grand final in Hawke’s Bay. She becomes the first woman to represent the Tasman region at the national final and, for the first time in the 51 year history of the competition, will be one half of two women competing.

The other half is newly-trained Waikato vet Emma Dangen.

Rounding out the field will be Aorangi’s Alan Harvey, James Robertson (Northern), Alex Field (Taranaki/Manawatu), Joseph Watts (East Coast) and Matt McRae (Otago/Southland).

Lindsay is more often found mustering sheep off rugged hills with her team of dogs.

“I entered the contest to learn and grow my skills, so it’s been an exciting few months. Whatever else happens will be a bonus.’’

The 24-year-old works at Marble Point Station, a 2400 hectare property between Hanmer Springs and Culverden.

It’s her first full-time job as a shepherd and she has five working dogs.

“A good team of working dogs is essential here. It would be difficult in this terrain to muster sheep without them,” she said.

“The past 12 months have been a big learning curve for me. I hadn’t worked much with dogs prior to taking this job. I’m really fortunate

The Amuri Basin Young Farmers member became the first woman to win the Tasman regional final in March.

“Shepherds with a good team of dogs earn a huge amount of respect from their peers and their reputation often precedes them,” she said.

“They’re admired in the same way as people with tidy farms.”

Lindsay has plenty of opportunities to hone her techniques, with the help of her employers Matt and Sarah Black.

Marble Point Station runs 3600 corriedale ewes and 380 angus breeding cows, plus replacement stock.

It’s a 10.5 kilometre walk for the sheep from the back paddock to the yards and woolshed on the flats at the front of the property.

The ewes are set-stocked in sheltered blocks before lambing starts in mid-September.

“Corriedales really suit this country. They are a dual-purpose breed, with a higher value fleece than crossbred sheep,” she said.

She grew up on a sheep, beef and deer farm in Dipton and got her job by picking up the phone last year.

“I heard through the grapevine Matt was looking for a shepherd, so I gave him a call,” she said.

“I came for a drive around the farm and it kind of just went from there. I don’t like applying for jobs and Matt didn’t really want to interview people, so it worked out pretty well,” she laughed.

The property is run as an equity partnership between Matt and Sarah and West Melton brothers Robin and Gavin Wilson.

Meanwhile, Harvey has dreamed of competing in the grand final since he was a child.

ney cross ewes, 150-200 trading cattle and arable crops. He’s in the process of farm succession and is set to take over in July.

His plan is to double ewe numbers to 1000 by breeding his own replacements within the flock.

“I expect to have newborn lambs on the ground before I head to the grand final. I haven’t quite worked out who will be looking after the flock while I’m away competing.

I might have to grovel to a neighbour.’’

His family has farmed the crossbred sheep on the rolling dryland 190 hectare property since the late 1800s.

“The [border romneys] suit our country. They’re hardy, produce well and the ewes handle our early lambing date,” he said.

Lambing starts at the beginning of July, which ensures lambs are at target weight and sold before Christmas, when it starts getting dry.

The early start isn’t ideal this winter as he will be in the Hawke’s Bay representing Aorangi at the national final.

The busy farmer has a lot on his plate as he started a new job as operations manager at Borst Holdings Limited in North Otago.

The privately-owned company operates four large-scale dairy farms, and a run-off.

The dairy farms cover a combined area of 992 hectares and milk 3500 cows.

There has been strong growth by the honey industry during the past few years but with demand and prices dropping by as much as 50 per cent compared to the previous season, there will be belt tightening and rationalisation, Apiculture New Zealand chief executive Karin Kos says.

She said the strong growth and good returns in the past few years had attracted a lot of new entrants to the industry.

However, the domestic and international markets have been “a bit sluggish”.

That, combined with an over-supply of non-manuka product and a reduced de-

mand from overseas, led to a drop in income for many in the industry.

In addition, the Ministry for Primary Industries introduced a new definition for manuka honey in 2017, and some of the honey produced did not meet the new criteria.

Kos said the industry was experiencing a “major reset” although the demand for manuka honey was still strong.

Overseas markets found New Zealand honey highly priced so were going elsewhere.

While total registered hive numbers and registered beekeeping enterprises continued to increase over the 2017/18 year, Kos said it was unlikely this growth would continue given current market conditions.

Salvesen leaves office in good heart

Hill country farmer Mike Salvesen stands down today as Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury president, relived that ministry officers are more concerned about the toll of the mycoplasma bovis cattle disease on farmers.

Salvesen has served his threeyear term and is making way for his replacement, who should be announced after member voting in the federation’s offices at Ashburton.

He said M. bovis was the most difficult challenge for him as president because it was such a multi-faceted problem at the “big picture’’ and farmer level.

Dealing with the disease response had not been helped by Ministry for Primary Industries officers consumed by process, he said.

“It’s not sorted yet. We said nearly a year ago the ministry is focusing less on people and more on process and only now has it changed. On some individuals it’s had quite a devastating effect where they have been badly let down and we read in some cases where they quite simply got it wrong.’’

Salvesen said he accepted that the ministry was bound to protecting individuals’ privacy and that so much of it was “secret”.

While it might have been good for him to carry on the presidency and see the bovis response through, there was the risk of blocking the seat for someone else to freshen the role, he said.

Normally the vice-president progresses to the presidency in Federated Farmers, but Salvesen was somewhat surprised for the job to be foisted upon him and grew into the role.

He leaves satisfied that he did his best and that farmers were well represented by the federation team.

“It has a positive role and it’s not just negative and fighting corners

all the time. You get to meet a lot of people who have greater influence whether it’s ministers or people at local and regional councils and you find out how they tick for the betterment of farmers and not always for the betterment of farmers, but you do find out where they are coming from. Sometimes it’s good to understand their argument and it would be even better if they understood our argument.’’

Salvesen said it had also been satisfying meeting many Mid Canterbury farmers and learning about how democracy works and, being cynical, the limited effect elected people can have at times.

He also learned that it was important to help farmers and be-

come involved, but not at the expense of home life or to take on other people’s problems personally.

“I’ve learned how deeply involved Federated Farmers are in many issues. They have got the largest policy team of any organisation outside of government.

Probably retaining membership [has been my greatest achievement]. I do think membership is very important to give a single voice to farmers because there are industry bodies but there is nobody else to look after farming in general and pull agriculturists as one industry together. The regulators don’t need conflicting messages. If farming can’t give them a

single position they will carry on with the policy they want to do.’’

Salvesen said the complete picture and complexity of new legislation or policy often got lost as lobby groups took positions on issues such as water and climate change.

Policy makers could also be short on the consequences of new policy as shown by interference in the housing market, a loss of land equity from reduced immigration, a shortage of eggs following rule changes on caged hens, and the repercussion of tenure review such as gains made from land sales or farms left without their high country.

Fewer farms to go on M. bovis restrictions The Ministry for Primary Industries expects fewer new farms will go on movement control for mycoplasma bovis than the initial estimate of 250 properties.

Last month the ministry announced a big surge in possibly infected properties with the cattle disease as a result of increased surveillance in the lead-up to Moving Day, otherwise known

as Gypsy Day. Initially, 250 farmers were expected to receive notices of direction restricting animal movement and 10-12 per cent of them to result in their properties ending up with the cattle disease.

Over the past few weeks about 300 farmers were contacted by ministry officers as a result of carrying high-risk animals.

About two-thirds of the properties are beef farms and the rest are dairy operations.

The ministry said in an update that efforts to contact farms that may pose a high risk from stock or other movements had been increased in advance of Moving Day. Of the 300 properties contacted by the M. bovis team, 182 of

them had been “assessed and progressed’’.

“We’ve tasked 72 notices of direction (NoDs) to control movements on and off these farms,’’ said the ministry in a statement.

“It was initially anticipated that 250 of the 300 identified high risk properties would be issued with a NoD. “Based on current figures, we

expect that number to be significantly less than 250.’’

The ministry confirmed after testing that only 10-12 per cent of the properties would be found to be infected with M. bovis.

So far there have been 168 properties nationwide confirmed with the disease with 54 of them still active and 96,985 cattle culled.

Telcos braced for mobile verdict

The telecommunications industry has barely had time to digest news of Vodafone NZ’s sale, but another shake-up could be in the works as the Commerce Commission releases a key report.

The watchdog will deliver the preliminary findings of its study into mobile market competition, which has been nearly 18 months in the making.

Previous studies have proved the precursors to major regulatory changes designed to boost competition – including a decision to slash the fees telcos can charge each other when calls cross between their networks, and portability – or the ability to take your phone number with you when you switch to a rival network.

Both moves provided a major leg-up for 2degrees.

The latest study looks at the mobile market overall, but the industry pricked up its ears in August 2017 when then Communications Minister Simon

it’s simply not worth marketing them, he said.

Earlier, Spark managing director Simon Moutter said the mobile market had become highly competitive and that the ComCom would better serve consumers by deploying resources elsewhere.

Moutter’s argument was bolstered to a degree by the ComCom’s own Annual Telecommunications Monitoring report, released in December, which noted that, overall, Kiwis are now getting more mobile services for their money.

The regulator reported that New Zealanders are now paying well below the OECD average across the board – though Australian heavy mobile users get a better deal.

The December findings probably mean the ComCom won’t recommend any big-bang measures to Communications Minister Kris Faafoi.

But on the MVNO front, Spark, Vodafone and 2degrees will still be nervous.

An MVNO agreement is a wholesale deal. Examples include The Warehouse Group’s Warehouse Mobile, which is a re-badged version of 2degrees’ mobile service and Vocus’ mobile services for its Orcon and Slingshot customers – which are based on an MVNO deal with Spark.

Market researcher IDC has pointed out that MVNO players account for less than 1 per cent of the mobile market here, but play a major role in a number of other countries – notably the UK. As the ComCom’s investigations continued, Vocus boss Mark Callander made it clear he thought today’s MVNO deals were too restrictive.

Callander said he’s not looking for a free lunch, but does want a “cost-plus” model or another mechanism that will give companies like Vocus more freedom about the types of mobile plans they can offer and at what price.

He wants mobile and landline/mobile bundles to become a major part of his company’s business, but under today’s rules

One of China’s wealthiest men, Jack Ma, founder of tech giant Alibaba, is urging his employees to have more sex in pursuit of a better work-life balance.

Ma gave a light-hearted speech at an event at which dozens of Alibaba couples were married in a group ceremony, stressing that a balanced home life was important for long-term happiness and health, and dubbed his philosophy “669”.

“We want 669 in life. What is 669? Six times in six days; the emphasis is on nine,” he said at the company gathering, referring to sex, and using a play on words, as the word “nine” in Mandarin is a homophone for the word “long”.

Ma’s “669” was in reference to a popular term that describes the Chinese industry’s work culture of “996” – a rough schedule of 9am to 9pm, six days a week. That is 72 hours a week, often without overtime pay.

Overworking is common in China and seen as a way to show dedication.

However, Ma prompted controversy recently after he endorsed the overwork culture, posting online in April that “to be able to work 996 is huge bliss”, arguing that milestones only come with great sacrifice. Other Chinese tech executives such as Richard Liu, the chief executive of JD.com, an e-commerce firm, agreed, saying that slackers were not “brothers”.

Alibaba founder Jack Ma. All this inflamed an already fraught discussion in industry about the societal pressure to give up everything for a job and an employer.

In March, a group of developers started a project online called “996.icu”, alluding to the idea that working such hours could land someone in the intensive-care unit.

According to Chinese law, businesses are only supposed to let staff work eight hours a day, or 40 hours a week, with overtime capped at 36 hours a month.

Ma’s latest remarks appear to roll back his earlier “996” endorsement, while still falling in line with Alibaba’s company culture, which has long prided itself on maintaining the feeling of a start-up despite ballooning to an early $US500 billion in market value.

Each year in May, the company

celebrates its employees with a day called “Aliday,” where couples who work for Alibaba take part in a group wedding ceremony.

The company flies international employees to its Hangzhou headquarters to participate.

Ma’s comments caused a stir online, with some criticising the businessman’s comments as “disgusting”.

Others wondered whether he was attempting to encourage a baby boom given China’s looming demographics challenge.

Experts have warned that China’s population will start to shrink over the next decade. The country’s birth rate hit a record low of 15 million births last year, the lowest number of babies born since 1949.

By 2050, about a third of the population will be elderly, straining state coffers and leaving fewer people of working age.

Allenton Croquet Club Our annual meeting was held on May 8 and members were welcomed by President Ann Sunbeam.

The mid-year dinner to be held this year on Tuesday June 18, 11.30/noon at the Hotel Ashburton and the Combined lunch which is to be organised by Allenton is to be on Friday, July 19 at the Hotel Ashburton. This is for Methven, Waireka and Allenton Croquet Clubs.

Georgina, Lois and Barbara to go to SC Assn AGM on May 20. The one remit was discussed to enable delegates to vote.

The next meeting to be held on Wednesday, August 21 at 10.45am.

Ashburton Golf Club The Watson Cup and Newton Trophy are really hotting up at the Brandon.

This Saturday sees semi-finals in both cups with some great games in store. John and Eric take on Dylan and Ryan in the Watson.

The Stoddart boys scraped past David and Robert, and John and Eric dealt to Royce and Ian. I have been told that Ian was better this week, after being slated for only pulling Royce’s trolley last time.

He excelled himself this week by bringing sandwiches!

In the other semi we have Wilson and John taking on Greig and Brendon. Last Saturday Wilson and John pulled down Bruce and Tuffy’s pants and handed out a damn good thrashing.

This was a massive upset and it wouldn’t surprise me if the vanquished duo keep a low profile for a couple of weeks.

Spud and Davo ruined Hoppy and Ken’s march to glory with another major upset.

After Spud’s Harry Potter-like magic putting last round, this time Hermione Davidson chimed in with three “chip-in” twos to kill off the game.

My call for the final John and Eric should put the Stoddart boys to bed and Wilson and John will nullify the golfing wizards.

In the Newton, Hamish and Arkright brushed aside Braydon and Hero and now take on Brent and Jason who snuck past Shane and Gordy.

There will not be a lot of shots given in this game, and I think Hamish and Arkright will manage it after extra holes. In the other side of the draw. Club legend Buffalo Bill and Alan gave Gaby and Perry a golfing lesson and will now look to do the same this week to Pat and Paddy.

These boys have been partying non-stop since Saturday as they have never won a matchplay game before, but somehow managed to bamboozle Blair and Steve.

If the two Patricks can stop their noses bleeding in the heady heights of a semi-final they may well make a game of it, but everything is pointing to Bill and Alan.

Last week’s non-match players were led by Josh Ackerley shooting an awesome level par round, and the continued return of Vince Carr moved up a notch, with him back collecting prizes with a great 4 up in the par round. Well done Vincey, great to see!

This week we have a Stableford round for those not in the semis, come on down and join the fun. Good golfing.

Ashburton Strollers Club Recent outings have included an easy stroll at Lake Hood and surrounds in late February.

In March there was a riverbed and tussock stroll to the Cameron River past Lake Heron, and later in the month a trip to Glentui. Also in March there was a trip to Castle Hill and Cave Stream, where some strollers went into the stream and walked through the cave.

The first stroll in April was to the Ryde Falls and Coopers Creek near Oxford, part of which was through beech forest. The five-tiered falls were spectacular. Also in April there was a visit to Kakahu Bush near Geraldine.

This month a planned stroll to the Acland Shelter was changed due to the weather forecast, and was replaced with a stroll along the highways and by-

ways of Tinwald. Last week there was a stroll to Mellish Stream.

Strolls are held monthly on the first Sunday and second Wednesday.

As the first Sunday in June is Queen’s Birthday weekend, the next stroll will be delayed a week until Sunday June 9. This will be a stroll to the Rakaia Gorge north bank.

This will be followed on Wednesday June 12 with a stroll from Centennial Park in Timaru to the coast and return.

All strolls depart from the Courthouse in Baring Square West, usually at 8.30am, and return in the afternoon, and cater for all age groups.

Ashburton Writers’ Group The annual general meeting of the Ashburton Writers’ Group was held recently.

The minutes of the annual general meeting held on May 9 were read and confirmed.

The secretary/treasurer read the statement of receipts and payments for the year ended March 31.

The president’s report was read and adopted.

The election of officers was held and resulted as follows – President Julie Fechney, vice-president Stacey Broadbent, secretary/treasurer Rae Magson.

The usual monthly meeting was then held. Rae read a quotation – “If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that,” by Stephen King The assignment for the meeting was You promised me. Members wrote of kiss, new kid on block, blood and pulling the plug.

The instant exercise was to start with Where was he? Members wrote of masked man, missing child, under the pine tree, disappeared, hurricane and new pocket watch.

Netherby Women’s Institute May Meeting Twenty members went to lunch at Speight’s Ale House for Mother’s Day’. We then returned to the Seniors Centre for our meeting.

Our president Denise Clark welcomed 25 members.

Aspirations were recited together.

Our motto for the month “Little snacks larger slacks” was read out by Joan Henderson.

Roll call: How many articles of clothing are you wearing today proved to be interesting with the least number being four and the most eight.

Golden Threads was read by Adrienne Hodson from an article in the January-February Home and Country magazine titled Our World – about a snowman.

Competition results were read out and Valmai Mitchell won the Moylan trophy (apologies for wrong spelling in previous reports) and Nancy Christie and Barbara Burst shared the Northchurch trophy.

Raffle was won by Winsome Wear.

Happy birthday was sung to three members with one who is turning 80.

As we did not have a speaker this month the rest of the time was taken up going through remits for the AGM in Taupo at the end of May.

Plains Ladies Friendship Club Our April meeting was a week late due to Easter but a good crowd gathered in spite of the poor weather.

Jeanette welcomed everyone and four brave people declared that they had celebrated birthdays. A new member was inducted and welcomed to the club.

We were notified of the wind up of the South Island Association and that items are needed for the newsletter. Please notify the almoner if you know of any sick members so she can visit. Reminder that subs are now due. Raffles were won by Brenda Taylor and Edith Watson.

Appropriately, being close to Anzac Day, Merryl Dudley gave us an illustrated tour that she and her husband did around The Battlefields of Belgium WWI as part of a tour round Europe. They flew from Spain to Bruges and then caught the train to Brussels.

Having explored the highlights of Brussels including lace making, medieval castles and climbing up towers to get great views of the countryside they joined The Flanders Fields Battlefield Day Tours.

It was very sobering to drive around the many cemeteries where so many men lost their lives especially the ones dedicated to all the unknown soldiers that lie buried there. Sadly there was one dedicated to 44,000 German soldiers that had very few visitors.

It was interesting to hear that still today farmers are finding munitions as they plough their fields and the army have to be called in to dispose of shells and lethal gas cylinders.

The tour included all the now famous cemeteries where NZ, Australian and Canadian soldiers lie: Tyne Cot, Hill 60, Ypres and the Menin Gate where every night since 2/7/28 the town’s people gather to hear The Last Post tribute to the Kiwi soldiers who died defending their city.

To finish Merryl read us In Flanders Fields the beautiful poem which became famous since the war.

They then headed to Gallipoli via Istanbul, saw The Grand Bazaar full of carpet shops, spices, clothing and gold. Beautiful mosques and famous palaces with ornate decorations before the sobering sights of Gallipoli, Anzac Cove, Chunuk Bair and The Lone Pine Cemetery.

On a more pleasant topic after morning tea we had a delightful trip on another overseas journey, a photographic trip round Italy.

Starting in Venice they had a most enjoyable time journeying the length of Italy seeing all the world famous sights of interest. Venice to Verona, The Cinque Terra to Florence, Pisa to Lucca and wonderful scenes in Tuscany with its beautiful hill-top towns and villages. Siena to Pienza Umbria and Assis the glories of Rome and the Vatican City.

They were enthralled with the beauty of the scenery and the opulence of the palaces.

Sadly time ran out before we got to Sorrento, Pompeii and the Amalfi coast – next time. Merryl was thanked for taking us on this spectacular journey.

On Saturday morning nine early-bird runners braved cool and misty weather to do the 10km river track run.

In the afternoon four runners and seven walkers travelled to Geraldine with the weather there also cool and overcast. After the first couple of hills everyone had certainly warmed up and conditions were ideal to complete the hill run of 15kms and walk of 8kms.

For one runner it was the first run on hills for seven months so the downhills were most welcome.

Saturday also had events in the North and South Islands attended by club members.

Six walkers took part in the Saint Clair half marathon walk which is held at the Saint Clair winery in Marlborough.

A lovely warm day greeted the large field of 624 for the 21km journey through the winery and along the banks of the Wairau River.

Our members did very well with everyone finishing in the top quarter of the field.

Paul Severins’ time of 2 hours 33 minutes saw him finish second overall and just 90 seconds behind the winner.

Our walkers’ results were: (age group placing in brackets) Paul Severins 2 hrs 33 (1st); Robbie Williams 2 hrs 40 (2nd); Chrissie Stratford 2 hrs 52 (1st); Wendy Severins 2 hrs 55 (4th); Lynda Bayne 2 hrs 59 (6th); David Bayne 3 hrs 11 (5th).

Alison Conway travelled further north and competed in the 23km trail run which is one of five events in the Waihi Nugget Multisport Festival.

The undulating course started on the beach then ran through lovely bush trails and across farmland to finish by the mine.

Alison finished the tough undulating course in an excellent time of 3 hours 32 minutes to finish 9th in her age group.

Emily Conway competed in the 6km walk and did

really well to be the first female home in a time of 1 hour 1 minute.

Congratulations to all those who took part – well done team!

Target Shooting Mid Canterbury Attendances at both club nights were down a little this week. Perhaps the effects of quite a bit of travel and the number of qualifying championships had something to do with it.

On the up-side though the results from these qualifying championships has proved very successful.

To explain: shooters who wish to try for selection into the national team must first be selected for their respective island team and then take part in the annual North Island v South Island match. To earn a place in the respective island team means that the shooter must take part in a set number of open championships and scores are averaged over the top three of these competitions to determine the shooter’s ranking.

While it is early in the championship round, and many shooters have not even started, there is a certain satisfaction in being able to sit back and say “I’ve got my scores, now you have to catch me”.

At this time shooters from our two clubs are quite dominant in the ranking list. Shania Harrison is carrying everything before her and is currently number 1 in the open, women’s and junior list.

With an average of 99.36 and time to improve on this she must be considered a certainty. Steve McArthur is next in line being 2nd in the open and 1st in the men’s.

Sandy Bennett 4th open and 2nd women, Colin Taylor 1st veteran and 6th men’s, Nina McKenzie 3rd women’s 7th open, Charlotte McKenzie 2nd junior.

So shooters from our clubs are currently 1 and 2 in the open, 1 and 4 in the men’s, 1, 2 and 3, in the women’s, 1 and 2 in the junior and 1 and 2 in the veteran’s.

This will no doubt change but what a strong position to be in. Bearing in mind that both Coronation and Phoenix have a number of both senior and junior shooters who are lining up for a crack at qualifying, I expect that this list of successful shooters will grow significantly. Last weekend at the East Otago Championships Shania Harrison-Lee was first in Master Grade, Bill Rankin 3rd C Grade and Charlotte McKenzie first in D grade. Jack Jones competing in his first open championship overcame early nerves to finish strongly.

A big weekend coming up with Ashley and North Canterbury Championships both being held this year at Rangiora.

Wakanui WI Café Mes Amis at Orari was the venue for celebrating our 86th birthday where we enjoyed a beautiful lunch before opening our monthly meeting.

In the absence of president Juliana the meeting was conducted by vice-president Jenette Storrier.

Apologies and previous minutes were dealt with and Sue Kent advised that goods donated last meeting for Riding for the Disabled had been delivered.

Reports were presented from the recent Officers School and the NEC Discussion Paper and remits for the forthcoming NZ Federation annual general meeting were discussed.

Information was also given regarding the A&P Show bay and tray themes and competitions.

The Wakanui WI will again be catering for the Vintage Ploughing Match on May 25 and members will be given duties nearer the time.

Members travelled home via The Merino Store at Hinds where a few purchases were made to lighten purses.

A very enjoyable afternoon.

Bowlers set for busy times Mid Canterbury-based bowlers are in for a busy few months with some major events on the horizon.

The draws have been released for both the South Island Championships, which are to be held in Christchurch over Queen’s Birthday weekend, and also the National Championships, which are set to be held in Rotorua next month over the course of a week.

Five Ashburton representatives will be in action at the National Championships, including the defending champions from the event which was held in Ashburton last year.

Michael Lawson will team up with fellow New Zealand representatives to defend their triples title from 12 months ago, while Mark Sheard and Helen Rennie will be out to repeat their efforts in the Masters division.

Cecil Tubb joins them in the

Masters line-ups this year while Grant Wilson is the other player in action in the open grade, playing the singles and also the pairs with his sister, and former New Zealand representative, Fiona Keegan.

A number of Ashburton players will also be in action at the South Island Championships in a few weeks.

Ten pairs combinations from the district will tackle the pairs title, five fours teams featuring local players will compete on the Sunday and then seven triples teams will line up to do battle on the Monday in the final event of the championships which is held at Kearney’s Road.

It’s a quiet weekend this weekend locally with just the drawn pairs on Sunday the only event in the district with all eyes in the sport on the trans-Tasman test match in Invercargill.

Barrett out for Jaguares NZME Hurricanes head coach John Plumtree has made just two changes to the starting XV to face the Jaguares on Friday night.

The experienced James Marshall will start at first five-eighth in the absence of Beauden Barrett who is on the second of his All Black rest weeks, while Du’Plessis Kirifi will start at openside flanker.

Marshall, who will make his 49th appearance for the Hurricanes, has impressed off the bench after returning from the shoulder injury he suffered in round one.

Kirifi’s inclusion sees Ardie Savea move to No. 8 with Reed Prinsep unavailable after he suffered a bad cut to his face in the Hurricanes’ 22-12 win over the Blues last week.

There are four changes to the bench from last week with Heiden Bedwell-Curtis providing loose forward cover, Chris Eves comes in for an injured Fraser Armstrong while Fletcher Smith and Salesi Rayasi come into the match day squad.

Israel Folau has sent a cryptic message by deleting his Instagram profile photo ahead of his reported contract termination.

The Wallabies star on Tuesday night took to his social media profiles on Instagram and Twitter to replace the previous image which showed him pointing to the sky while celebrating scoring a try for the Waratahs.

In its place the former NRL and AFL star has posted an image showing the No. 1 written in tiny words of “God” with the phrase “God First” at its centre.

The same image has also been posted as his new Twitter account photo.

The previous profile picture is still shown on his Instagram account, but is no longer in a high-visibility section.

The message is being viewed by some rugby commentators as a sign Folau has accepted his fate that he will no longer be an employee of the Wallabies or the Waratahs by the end of the week.

The fundamentalist Christian faces being sacked by RA after being found to have committed a high-level code of conduct breach for an Instagram post that said hell awaited “drunks, homosexuals, adulterers” and others.

The Daily Telegraph’s Julian Linden wrote the message is a sign “Folau is slowly but surely distancing himself from the sport”.

Folau’s contract is reportedly expected to be terminated this when an independent three-person panel convenes to deliver their verdict into Folau’s code of conduct hearing.

The Daily Telegraph first reported the panel has already come to a unanimous judgment that Folau’s Instagram post constitutes a high level breach of the game’s code of conduct and warrants immediate termination.

It is a hammer blow to Folau, who is now set to be left with nothing after reportedly previously knocking back a settlement offer of $1 million, a figure that RA has denied.

If the panel rules to terminate Folau’s contract, RA will not have to pay a cent more on his fouryear, $4 million contract. However, Folau can still request to appeal the verdict under a different three-member panel.

He is also reportedly considering further legal action, despite the rising costs of his legal defence.

Meanwhile, NSW Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson admits it will be a sad day for rugby if Folau is sacked.

Gibson has coached Folau, or been an assistant to former Waratahs coach Michael Cheika, since the code hopper joined the 15-man game in 2013.

Closing in on crunch time

When the third games of the first round of Mid Canterbury Netball’s premier competition get under way tonight, it will signal the start of a massive few days.

Tonight may be the mid-point of the first round in terms of the number of games, but the season’s opening round will actually draw to a close a week tonight, with an additional catch-up round set to be played on Tuesday night to make up for a slightly later than usual start to the season.

For a couple of teams, that means it really is crunch time, because at the end of round one the bottom team in premier one will be automatically relegated to premier two.

At the moment it looks to be a two-horse race for that bottom spot, with Celtic B and Mt Somers the only teams not to have picked up a win from the opening two games of the season.

In fact, both have crashed to two pretty convincing losses and both will have tough asks in front of them tonight.

For Mt Somers, the unbeaten defending champions Celtic A are tonight’s opposition, while for Celtic B it’s last year’s runners-up, Methven A. Last week Methven A downed Mt Somers 36-22, while Celtic B were well and truly beaten 41-16 by a College A side that’s shaping up to be one that could really give Celtic A a run for their money this season.

After two rounds, College A and Celtic A are both on eight points and unbeaten at the top of the table, but it’s the young school side that has the superior goal difference – 42 compared to 18 – with both of their wins coming against the two bottom teams.

Celtic A on the other hand were given a bit of a run for their money early on against Hampstead A last week, but eventually got there 31-24.

Tonight Hampstead A have another tough game in front of them, against Ashburton College A. While the race is on to not be the bottom team after round one in premier one, in premier two it’s a fight for the top. That’s because the team that finishes top in premier two at the end of

round one will be automatically promoted into premier one, taking the place of the team that drops down to premier two.

The frontrunners to do that are the two teams that were relegated from premier one last season – United A and Southern A. Both are two-from-two so far this season, and tonight United A will look to keep that momentum up against Methven B, while Southern A will play Celtic C, and the other game of the night will see Ashburton College B up against Hampstead B. Mt Somers and Celtic B were the two teams promoted last year, with Mt Somers automatically promoted after round one and Celtic B beating United A in a promotion/relegation match at the end of round two.

With their position in the top tier of Canterbury secondary schools’ netball SuperNet competition secure, Ashburton College headed to Christchurch last night searching for another win.

The College A netball side was one of three bottom teams in last year’s competition, which meant they had to fight to stay up in the top grade, along with the three top teams from the second division, before the start of the 2019 competition.

They won their first two qualification games, against Darfield High School and Cashmere High School, and last Wednesday added a 29-16 win over Rangi Ruru to make it three-from-three and secure their future in the top tier.

College A coach Kaye Kennedy said she’d expected a battle against Rangi Ruru, but her girls proved to be up to the task.

“Their communication was really good and their links through the court, and we just had some excellent shooting,” Kennedy said.

“It doesn’t matter who I put in there, they are doing a great job.

They are very accurate and their shooting percentages are high.”

They were due to play Kaiapoi on Saturday in their last qualifying game, but Kaiapoi decided to pull out of the qualifying and settle for starting 2019 in the second grade.

Kaiapoi, Darfield and Ellesmere College – who withdrew from the qualifying round – were the three who would start 2019 in that division, while Ashburton College, Rangi Ruru and Cashmere would start in the top one.

For Cashmere – a second division team last season – it would be a big step up.

The top SuperNet grade would this year feature Ashburton College and their first round opposition in Christchurch last night, St Margaret’s, along with Villa Maria, Christchurch Girls’ High School, St Andrew’s College, Rangi Ruru, Cashmere High School and Rangiora High School.

The bottom team in the top grade and the top team in the second grade would play off in a promotion/relegation match at the end of the first round.

Fox hoping to silence ‘Tiger roar’ at PGA champs NZME New Zealand golfer Ryan Fox is hoping to feed off the excitement generated by the playing group in front of him in the first two rounds at the US PGA Championship, starting Friday morning at Bethpage Black in New York.

The 32-year-old tees off at 8.35am (12.35am NZT) in the group behind 15-time major winner Woods, defending champion

Brooks Koepka and Open Championship winner Francesco Molinari.

“It’s much better playing the group behind him than the group in front of him by all accounts,” Fox said.

“The atmosphere will be great, rowdy and I might have to put up with people moving here and there and it’s just something you deal with. I don’t mind playing in front of big crowds generally and

it should be a bit of fun.

“You just have to pick your moments and not tee off while he is looking like holing a putt on the green because that Tiger roar is something pretty special.”

Fox is expecting play to be even slower than normal and the round could take as many as five and a half hours to complete.

“I don’t think it will be a very quick tournament anyway. The greens are tricky as well and it’s

long, the rough’s up and guys will have to lay up on par fours.

Obviously with the amount of people around Tiger’s group the whole time, that group is generally slower than most and it’s just dealing with that many people getting around the golf course.”

Fox admits his preparation for his first major of the year has been less than ideal, with last week’s British Masters the only tournament he has had in the

past six weeks. He missed the cut in Southport but is comfortable with his scheduling.

“I have tried to take a bit more time off to be more ready at the back end of the year than I have the last couple of years,” Fox said.

The Kiwi number one is tempering expectations however with his immediate goal, playing well enough to make the cut to play the weekend on a course he describes as “a brute”.

The Babe Aussie hall of famer NZ Racing Desk Legendary expat-Kiwi jockey Brent Thomson, affectionately known as The Babe, has been inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame.

Already a Hall of Famer in his homeland of New Zealand, Thomson began his riding career in Wanganui in 1973 as a 15-yearold.

The son of trainer Kevin Thomson, he was a natural in the saddle and went on to early success in New Zealand before winning the first of four Gr.1 Cox Plates (2040m) at the tender age of 17-years-old when guiding home New Zealand horse Fury’s Order to victory in 1973.

Thomson then went on to win three successive Cox Plates from 1977 aboard Family of Man, So Called, and Dulcify, a horse Thomson would label as the best he has ridden.

“The way that Dulcify won that Cox Plate was fantastic, and the call of Bill Collins was amazing, he was an exciting caller. It was my fourth (win in the race) and I thought he could win it, but not quite the way he did.

“It will always go down as one of those great Cox Plates because of Collins’ call. If I was to put one race (as a highlight of my career), he’s the pinnacle.”

Midway through his Cox Plate run, Thomson was lured over the Tasman by legendary trainer Colin Hayes and he immediately rewarded Hayes’ faith with two successive wins the Cox Plate.

The partnership continued to flourish and Thomson went on to win three Victorian jockey premierships, becoming the first non-Victorian to claim the title.

Thomson was then lured to the United Kingdom as a 24-year-old

by Robert Sangster, and as with Hayes, he immediately rewarded Sangster’s faith in him.

“Having Robert Sangster as my sponsor was a massive help,” he said. “My first success was at Royal Ascot on Committed in what was the Cork and Orrery Stakes, now known as the Queen’s Jubilee (Gr.1, 1200m). All those things

Thomson went on to win the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (1600m) aboard Sure Blade and highlighted his ride aboard Gildoran when winning the Gr.1 Ascot Gold Cup (4000m) as one of his best.

The pair led for the majority of the extreme distance to give Gildoran back-to-back wins in the race.

“He was an interesting horse because he was a really big heavy horse, but he virtually needed the ground to be rock hard, which is quite unusual for English stayers,” he said.

“The horse was in great form and he ran well in a lead-up race, but you hope and pray that the ground stayed good and fast, and it did.

“I just knew that they were going to go an ordinary pace for the first half of the race and I decided to make our own way. It was a very lonely place to be for about four minutes, rocking and

rolling up front. “I always rated it as one of my great rides because it’s a long way to be in front. It’s like leading in a Melbourne Cupplus.”

Thomson experienced plenty of success during his time in Europe, including securing Group One success in the Grosser Preis Von Baden (2400m) in Germany aboard Strawberry Road.

Thomson subsequently returned to Australia in 1987 where he once again experienced immediate success.

“I came back to Australia, got off the plane and won a Gr.1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on Marwong and I won the Caulfield Cup (Gr.1, 2400m) on Lord Reims.”

Thomson said he found it hard to settle in Australia and elected to move to Asia and found Hong Kong to be an exciting place to ride.

“I found it terribly hard to settle in Australia after being away for such a long time,” he said.

“Whilst I had great success and

won big races, I found it quite unsteady. That’s why I probably travelled after that to the likes of Hong Kong and spent time in Asia, and then went back to England in the nineties.

“The most exciting place that I have ridden is undoubtedly Hong Kong. A place like Happy Valley under lights on a Wednesday night. I came through that era where Hong Kong racing just took off like wildfire.”

In all, Thomson plied his trade in 24 countries, recording more than 2500 wins, 54 of those at Group One level.

Thomson, now based in Melbourne, wasn’t lost to the racing industry after his retirement, having worked for New Zealand Bloodstock for a number of years as their Australian representative.

Thomson said he had a wonderful riding career and looks back on his time in the saddle with fondness.

“Big races usually followed me and it was a great career,” he said.

Quality New Zealand three-yearold Arrogant is the latest Australasian galloper to join the exodus to Hong Kong following his recent sale.

The Mike Moroney and Pam Gerard-trained son of Ocean Park will join the stable of Caspar Fownes in Hong Kong and the Group One performer will no doubt be a candidate for next year’s Hong Kong Derby (2000m), which is run for four-year-olds and is Hong Kong’s most prestigious race.

“He’s a lovely colt that we have developed from a yearling into a Group One performer with a big future,” Mike Moroney said.

“However, the offer was simply too good to refuse, and he has been sold in a private negotiation brokered by my brother Paul.”

Arrogant has raced 10 times, winning his maiden at Matamata before finishing runner-up in the Gr.2 Waikato Guineas (2000m) and fourth in the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby (2400m).

At his first start in Australia, Arrogant was narrowly beaten by The Autumn Sun in the Gr.1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) before being unsuited by the Randwick surface last time out when unplaced in the Gr.1 Australian Derby (2400m).

Bred by Kevin Hickman, Arrogant was offered for sale as a New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Premier yearling where he was purchased by Paul Moroney for $130,000 from Hickman’s Valachi Downs.

Moroney said the Ballymore New Zealand stable played the major role in developing the talented three-year-old.

“Pam Gerard and the team at Ballymore New Zealand deserve a lot of the credit,” Moroney said.

“We wish Caspar all the best with him and there will be no-one prouder than Ballymore Stables should he go on to win the Hong Kong Derby.”

Chasing the dream They hadn’t hit as of yesterday afternoon, but Michael Lawson is pretty sure when the national anthem starts to ring out over the Southland Indoor Bowls Stadium today the butterflies in his stomach will start fluttering.

The newly crowned Mid Canterbury Sportsperson of the Year, has been in Invercargill since Sunday afternoon preparing alongside his fellow New Zealand representatives ahead of their biennial test match against Australia.

For Lawson, today is the culmination of decades of work on the indoor bowls mats around New Zealand. He’s been reserve on multiple occasions for the national side, but today he finally gets his first cap as a New Zealand player.

“It’s been a pretty surreal week to be honest,” he said yesterday.

“But it’s been pretty relaxed, and I’ve been around a lot of people I know really well and am familiar with so I’ve been lucky.

“The nerves so far have been kept in check, but I reckon that anthem will be the moment that all changes.”

As well as the challenges of making his debut for his country, the international version of the game comes with its own differences.

The mats on which matches are played are of much thicker than the traditional New Zealand indoor bowls mats and Lawson is having to take a completely different approach to the game than his normal style.

He’s spent years skipping or being in a controlling position within a side, but will, for the next few days, be playing in the lead position for both the triples and fours team of which he is a part of.

“That’s been an interesting challenge, and adapting to the international mats, they’re a lot heavier than what we are used to.

“But I enjoy a good challenge and it’s been a great week so far and the only way to cap it off will be by lifting that trophy on Saturday afternoon.”

Lawson will team up with Simon Thomas and Daniel French in the men’s triples side.

The trio actually won the triples at the National Championship last year in Ashburton and have played a lot of bowls together over the year which will help with their combinations on the mat.

They are joined by Auckland’s Paul Wright in the men’s fours.

Play begins this morning and is spread out with two sessions each day up until Saturday where a winner will be found between the two sides.

Selected matches are being livestreamed throughout the course of the event with Lawson’s match beginning at 1.30pm today available on the New Zealand Indoor Bowls Facebook Page.
