Ashburton’s Wheels Week, an event like no other in the country, has drawn to a close after two weeks of wheels-related fun. The 26th annual event was bigger and better than previous years, bringing more than 20,000 people into the district. The extravaganza has grown over the years to incorporate two weeks rather than one and had more than 20 activities this year including racing, a swap meet, mountain biking and the Ashburton Speedway New Zealand Title. One of the organisers, Tony Dawson, said he was pleased with how it went with numbers for most events being up on previous years. “We’re delighted with it actually, we really are. All the work that’s been put into it by everyone, it’s certainly been worthwhile.”
The affair culminated in a variety of different events at the weekend including the AutoSparks Street Sprint, the Patersons Funeral Services Wheelchair Basketball and the SprayMarks Wheels Week Street Parade. “The weekend has gone extremely well. The crowd at the street sprint was great and the wheelchair basketball was a real hit.” The committee members were blown away with the enthusiasm at the basketball, he said. There were also hundreds who attended the annual parade on Sunday morning to watch millions of dollars worth of vehicles pass through town, he said. “The parade was huge, we were pretty rapt with it.” Most of the large vehicles went from the parade to the Big Toys for Big Boys Show at the Ashburton Airport where people could view them up close.
The entire Wheels Week, which spanned three weekends and two weeks, brought people from all over the South Island and even some from the North Island, into the district, he said. “An event like this brings a huge amount of people into town. “Over the whole event there’s been a huge influx of people, especially last weekend with the swap meet.” Every year they tend to get bigger crowds and have such a range of wheelsrelated events that there is something for everyone, he said. “It’s a bit of an iconic event, there’s nothing like it in New Zealand.” Organisers of the event are already looking forward to planning next year and hope to add some new activities. Money raised from Wheels Week will be going towards scouting in Ashburton and will be presented in the next few weeks once the total has been tallied.
