It is time to take the pain affiliated with the former Work and Income building and turn it into strength, that was the message from Arowhenua Marae upoko Te Wera King at the blessing of the new Community House building yesterday.

Situated on the corner of Cass and Moore streets, the building was where, in September 2014, two Winz staff were shot and killed and another injured.

Since then the premises have remained closed to the public, but a purchase by the Community House Trust

ensured a positive future for a building with a tragic past.

Yesterday, the building – which is now open to the public – was blessed by members of the Arowhenua and Hakatere maraes.

Hakatere Marae chairman Tipene Philip opened proceedings, the aim of which was to ease people back into the building.

The blessing took place before the building’s official opening, pegged for next month, due to the fact it is now occupied by tenants.

Mr King then took over, performing a

karakia to break tapu before heading inside to bless the building.

More than 60 people were present for the ceremony, including tenants, Community House Trust representatives and students from Ashburton College.

Following Mr King’s tour of the premises, Community House Trust chairman John Driscoll thanked both Mr Philip and Mr King for their help before inviting everyone present to a morning tea.

Roll capacity boosted

St Joseph’s School had to turn prospective students away last year as they were bursting at the seams, but now they’ve been granted a roll extension meaning they can take more pupils.

The Catholic school’s roll was previously capped at 239, but now they can take up to 265 after receiving the green light from the church, principal Cath Blacklow said.

“When we approached the Bishop, we basically said we had lots of Catholics coming in and our roll was absolutely chokka and had closed the roll to Catholic students,” Mrs Blacklow said.

“We needed the increase to allow more Catholics to come in.”

As a Catholic school they’re able to take some non-Catholic students – up to around five per cent

of their roll – but due to the number of Catholics coming through they’d now closed that non-preferential roll.

Mrs Blacklow said St Joseph’s School was a multi-cultural school.

Their roll was currently 70 per cent pakeha, 17 per cent Filipino, 7 per cent Pasifika, 4 per cent Maori and 2 per cent other, with 24 per cent of the school’s students being ESOL. “The face of the school has certainly changed, but that’s a good thing,” she said.

Mrs Blacklow said the school wasn’t likely to hit the new roll cap for a while, but it would happen.

“I would think that it will slowly creep up, with only losing 20 year eights at the end of this year.”

At the other end of the school, 19 new entrants expected in the second half of the year meant a new, new entrant class would open in term three.

Judge Mill said there was undoubtedly “pushing and shoving over the modem”, with each party determined to have it.

He believed she would use force to prevent the defendant taking it.

“He could have left the modem, but he was determined to take it,” Judge Mill said.

He found McLaren was not acting in self-defence, convicted him and sentenced him to six months supervision and 100 hours of community work. On the fraud charge he was convicted and ordered to pay $200 reparations.

Defence lawyer Michelle Barrell produced photos of bruising McLaren claimed he sustained, and called his mother to the stand to describe injuries the complainant had allegedly inflicted on her son in previous incidents.

McLaren admitted taking the victim’s bankcard without her permission and using it to withdraw $200 from the victim’s account but claimed it was his own money.

He said she had withheld wages from work he had done several weeks earlier. As he did not have a bank account, the money had been paid into the victim’s account.

He claimed he was forced to defend himself by slapping her face and hands and pushing her away, causing her to fall over on the deck.

The complainant then called triple one, and police arrived after the defendant had left the property.

Photographic evidence of injuries sustained by the victim was produced during yesterday’s hearing.

Constable Dominic Grinter, who interviewed McLaren the following day, said the defendant had no obvious injuries to support his claims.

All was going well until an argument erupted over the ownership of an internet modem and from this point on their stories diverged.

She said he threw her to the ground and punched her twice in the stomach, kicked her and hit her across the head after she told him to leave the modem behind.

McLaren said the modem was rightly his. In the dispute over its ownership she hit him, attempted to throttle him and pushed him down stairs in a prolonged assault.

Jason Donald McLaren appeared before Judge Ian Mill on a charge of assaulting a woman and credit card fraud.

The accused and the victim had been living together in Akaroa when an argument ensued on August 19 last year. Both parties agreed on the facts to this point.

Hazard stance toughened

An Ashburton tradesman on the Asbestos Exposure Register is applauding moves to further tighten safety regulations around the hazardous substance.

Each year more than 170 New Zealanders die from asbestos related diseases and as a result a regulation overhaul has taken place to ensure workers who come into contact with the substance have the skills necessary to keep themselves and others safe.

As of April 4 anyone dealing with the removal of asbestos will

need a WorkSafe licence.

The Ashburton man, who chose to remain anonymous, said he had come into contact with asbestos countless times over his career and as a result was now on WorkSafe’s exposure register.

Intended to gather information on exposure and disease, people who register can be referred on for a chest x-ray and a test to measure lung function.

While the man’s chest x-ray was clear his lung function was only “okay”.

“It wasn’t perfect,” he said.

Years ago no one knew about

the dangers associated with asbestos and so coming into contact with it was routine, the man said.

Asbestos poses a health risk when it is disturbed and inhaled as fine fibres. Once inhaled the fibres can become embedded in the lungs and may cause diseases such as asbestosis (scarring of lung tissue), lung cancer and mesothelioma (malignant tumours).

Having had an uncle and a couple of friends who died from subsequent asbestos poisoning, and suffering from mild after-effects himself, the man now takes extra

caution when working near the substance.

The new rules around asbestos removal licensing has even prompted one Ashburton company to rethink the substance.

EA Networks engineering and safety advisor Ken Stirling said the company is changing the way it deals with asbestos and is going as far as hiring a third party to deal with all asbestos related matters.

“We are keeping right away from it,” he said.

In the early days asbestos was a run-of-the-mill occurrence, often found in night store heaters and

heat storage ranges in large quantities, Mr Stirling said.

And contractors still deal with it, particularly in houses and buildings built before 1994.

Other local businesses however said the new regulations would not directly affect them. Bradford Building general manager Graeme Instone said removal specialists were called when asbestos was encountered on site and Greg Donaldson of Greg Donaldson Contracting said his business already operated under an asbestos licence and had done so for a number of years.

Walking the Te Araroa trail

English couple Carl Hutchinson and Adele Harris were enjoying a peaceful meditation course in Nepal when the country’s deadly 2015 earthquake struck last year.

Almost one year later the pair are in Methven, as they stop off on a fundraising walking journey across New Zealand.

When they were undertaking that meditation course, they pondered how they might be able to live a more selfless existence.

That opportunity was presented to them just before they were to leave the country, when the earthquake struck and killed over 8000 people.

Now they are walking the Te Araroa trail, stopping off in towns along the way to shake tins for donations, and raise awareness of

their Give A Little page. All money goes to the Himalayan Trust, which is rebuilding Nepalese schools.

They have had to encounter all sorts of terrain and all sorts of weather as they walk the trail, which was completed in 2011 and sees up to 500 people complete it each year.

In Mid Canterbury they walked from Mt Potts to the Rakaia Gorge, taking four days and staying at Double Hut, the A frame hut and camping out along the way. Yesterday they managed to score a ride into Methven with two hunters, and will spend today in the town asking for donations.

They said doing the walk was not entirely selfless, as they were getting to enjoy the amazing scenery along the way. They had planned to come to New Zealand

anyway, and walking the trail was a more interesting way of encountering the country than the holiday they had planned initially.

The couple left Bluff on January 3 and expect to arrive at Cape Reinga in July.

Initially their days were exhausting, and they got blisters upon blisters, but now the 20 kilometres per day demand of the trail is something they have adjusted to.

“You just have to keep on going, your feet just harden up,” Mr Hutchinson said.

Easter rubbish pick-ups Easter might still be 10 days away, but the Ashburton District Council is making sure residents have plenty of warning about changed kerbside rubbish and recycling collections over the holiday period.

People whose collection day would normally be Good Friday will need to put their rubbish and recycling out the day before, Thursday.

If your normal collection day is Easter Monday, then your rubbish and recycling should be put out the next morning, Tuesday. Because Thursday and Tuesday will be a double-up day for the collection teams, people need to have their rubbish and recycling kerbside by 7.30am. The Ashburton and Rakaia Resource Recovery Parks will also be closed on Good Friday and Easter Monday and the Methven Inorganic Materials Drop-off Facility will be closed on Good Friday.

GDP growing, but slowing

If Canterbury’s economic performance grew last year, in spite of falling milk prices, the Ashburton District played a strong part in that growth, says Grow Mid Canterbury chief executive Rob Brawley.

Falling milk prices are casting a pall over New Zealand’s dairy sector, showing up in dramatically declining growth figures for Waikato, Southland and the West Coast, but Ashburton has continued to hold its own, Mr Brawley said.

Nationally 11 out of 15 regions grew during the year to March

2015 and while the GDP figures do not break down into territorial local authority areas, he is confident that Ashburton’s economy is still moving forward.

“I still believe we’ve done better than average, but things are slowing and they’ll get slower.

We are heading for some tight times,” he said.

The Ashburton District’s diversity was usually its strength, but as milk prices plummeted and dairy farmers cut costs it became increasingly clear how much all sectors of the rural economy were intertwined, Mr Brawley said.

well so far but it will get worse, from here on in it will be tight until cash flows improve. Unfortunately, sheep, beef and arable are all related to dairying so the impact is accumulative.”

Businesses servicing dairy farms were quieter but one of the district’s saviours was that most had been struggling to find enough staff when times were good and that should stave off layoffs now times were tougher, he said.

Talking to professionals in the Waikato and Southland, two of the areas hardest hit by falling milk prices, Mr Brawley said he was aware that farmers and ser-

vice businesses were laying off staff. He said he was not aware of layoffs locally.

“But we have to be careful, cautious, businesses have to ensure they are very efficient.

GDP is based on production not price and we’re continuing to play a strong role in Canterbury’s growth.”

A major influence in ensuring the district weathers rapidly declining dairy dollars could come with a plan initiated by Canterbury’s mayors that focuses on putting in place building blocks across seven categories to maximise all opportunities for growth.

Sporting fans had better mark their calendars, Sir Richard Hadlee is coming to town. An evening with the famous cricketer is being hosted by Drummond and Etheridge Ashburton in conjuction with the Mid Canterbury U13 Football team on Saturday, May 28.

A fundraiser for the team’s Japan trip, tickets to the event are $95 which includes a three course meal followed by a speech and auction.

Two minor crashes There were two minor car crashes south of Rakaia yesterday on State Highway One. About 1pm a noseto-tail non-injury crash occurred at Overdale, and at about 3pm a car left the road about 500 metres out of the town. St John had no reports of any injuries from the crash.

Trapped under digger A man has been taken to hospital after getting his legs caught underneath a digger in Te Awamutu yesterday. Northern fire communications spokesman Colin Underdown said it was unclear if just one or both of the man’s legs were caught by the digger. Fire crews helped rescue the man and lift him into a waiting ambulance.

Gender-neutral loos? Not here

Mid Canterbury’s two colleges will not be installing gender-neutral bathrooms in the near future due to lack of demand.

A number of schools around the country have fitted genderneutral bathrooms in an effort to make transgender students feel more comfortable rather than having to choose between using a male or female bathroom.

However, Mount Hutt College

principal John Schreurs said his school had not considered doing this because there was no need for it.

The school’s role is primarily to help students learn but also to make sure every student at the school feels accepted and supported, not just one group of people.

However, if a need or demand did arise, it would be considered, he said.

“Our aim is to support and help

all students. “It’s about making the effort to accept people and work with people for who they are and that’s a challenge that all society needs to look at as well.”

Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan also said he does not feel there is a need for genderneutral toilets at his school but future Ministry of Education bathroom designs should help prevent instances of bullying in cubicles.

The new design, which will probably be adopted by most

schools (including Ashburton College) in any future rebuilds, has sinks along one side of the room and doors leading into individual rooms with separate toilets rather than the current cubicle design.

This new layout is more accommodating, reduces the risk of bullying and could easily be gender neutral if needed, he said.

“I think the way of the future is layouts like that.”

If these new toilets are installed

at the college they would then think about whether or not they would be gender neutral but this is still a long way off, Mr McMillan said.

Currently, there are probably some transgender students at the school but he has not heard of an issue with the toilets.

If anything did arise it would be dealt with and if there were students who felt uncomfortable using a particular bathroom they would be supported, he said.

The mountains of the Mackenzie Country might be an almost twohour drive away, but this weekend the trip south will come with some very special rewards – music and art.

The Tekapo community is putting its weight behind its school and new kindergarten, staging a music festival in the gardens of iconic Glenmore Station.

While the event might be a fundraiser for Tekapo children, it has a strong lineup of performers who are very firmly linked to the Ashburton District. Among those are Ashburton lawyer Mark Tavendale and his sister Sarah Fastier who farms in the area. ExAshburtonian Anna Hoetjes (nee Argyle) will also be performing.

Promoter Sarah Burtscher said the event was attracting strong interest on the back of the line-up of well known musicians who will perform everything from classical music to jazz. Ashburton singers will be joined by Fiona Pears with a full band, the River City Jazzmen, Bex Murray and Hamish Oliver.

The event is not just about mu-

sic, however, with three artists on site during the day live painting their impressions of the event.

The art works will be auctioned.

A range of food will be available during the event but people are also encouraged to bring their own picnic lunches and refreshments, Mrs Burtscher said.

Music in the Mountains was held at Glenmore Station five years ago to raise money for victims of the Christchurch earthquakes and strong early interest in this year’s event indicates it could become a biennial fundraiser for the school, she said.

Tickets can be bought online or at the gate and with good weather forecast, the organisers are expecting a large turnout.

Glenmore Station is accessed by travelling through Tekapo and turning right up the north side of Lake Tekapo on Godley Peaks Road (shingle) and then turning left into the concert venue.

Travel time from Tekapo is about 15 minutes. Gates open at 11am and the concert starts at noon.

International praise for initiative

A national initiative to help schools work together has been praised overseas and Mid Canterbury principals think this is well deserved.

Two groups of Mid Canterbury schools have joined the Government initiative Communities of Learning (CoL) which was formed to help schools raise student achievement.

Education Minister Hekia Parata said international education experts at the sixth International Summit on the Teaching Profession in Berlin recently were very impressed with CoL. “Many delegations at last year’s summit indicated they were interested in our Communities of Learning and it was great to be able to update them on the significant progress we have made since then.

“They were extremely impressed to learn that about a third of New Zealand schools are now part of Communities of Learning and are in the process of sharing data in order to lift the quality of teaching and learning.”

Wakanui School principal Hilary Boyce, who belongs to the Hakatere cluster of schools, said

It is time for the unsung heroes of New Zealand’s health workforce to be recognised with nominations now open for the 2016 Minister of Health Volunteer Awards.

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman said the awards helped to recognise the thousands of people who support the country’s health and disability services. Last year’s award recipients ranged from people who helped others navigate their way around hospitals and health services to people who visited isolated older people in their homes.

Anyone who knows of an individual or a team of volunteers that deserves to be recognised is encouraged to nominate them.

Nominations close on April 8 and will be presented during National Volunteer Week from June 19 to 25.

There has been skepticism from different organisations in the past about the initiative,

but from her point of view it is a positive and encouraging strategy that will make a difference to schools and their students, she said.

Mount Hutt College principal John Schreurs, who belongs to the Opuke CoL, said it is great that the project is getting such good praise.

The schools in Mid Canterbury have always worked together in an informal way, but having a recognised and funded platform was good, he said.

Both clusters are getting under way of this year with meetings and the Hakatere CoL had their official launch on Thursday afternoon at the Hotel Ashburton.

Last warning from judge for breaches of bail Tyler Croll-Davis is on his last warning having breached his bail conditions twice in recent weeks.

He is facing two charges of resisting police, one of driving while disqualified and one of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle.

The 21-year-old appeared in the Ashburton District Court yesterday, having spent the weekend in custody after he was arrested for breaching bail conditions and resisting police officers.

Judge Ian Mill released him on bail to an address in Allenton, with a stern warning to abide by the conditions he imposed.

Those were not to associate

with a named person, to stay away from a Tinwald address and to refrain from consuming alcohol.

Judge Joanna Maze imposed the same conditions when she remanded Croll-Davis on bail following a recent court appearance; however, Croll-Davis went to the address he was banned from, under the influence of alcohol last week.

Croll-Davis’ lawyer Roz Burnside queried the legality of the breach charge; however, Judge Mill dismissed her concerns.

“He does not have to be charged with a breach of bail – he has done it – he went to (the address) and

he had been drinking, then he resisted police who were attempting to arrest him,” he said.

“The police say he’s come to the end of the line and should be in custody.”

Only the fact a family member put her hand up to support him with a bail address prevented Croll-Davis from being returned to prison pending his next appearance on March 26.

William Uhilamoelangi Tuitavake, of Ashburton, admitted drink driving (EBA 459mcg/l), dangerous driving and unlawfully

getting into a motor vehicle.

Tuitavake was found to have been drinking alcohol after he collided with another vehicle in December. He was convicted, disqualified from driving indefinitely and ordered to use a zero-alcohol licence for three years if, or when, his licence is returned. He was also fined $1400 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

to pay court costs of $130.

Cameron Ralph Mansell, 36, of Ashburton, was convicted on his sixth count of drink driving (EBA 492mcg/l).

It was five years since Mansell last appeared for drink driving.

He was sentenced to six months on community detention, with a 7.30pm to 6am curfew, disqualified from driving for 12 months and one day, ordered to obtain and use a zero alcohol licence for three years when his licence is returned and to undertake 12 months’ supervision.

Loneliness is not always a choice Sue Newman

ying alone, knowing that no-one cares whether you live or die must be one of the worst ways to exit this life.

But that’s what appears to be happening in a growing number of cases around New Zealand where people live alone and die alone. Sadly for some those deaths go unnoticed for many days or weeks.

Some people live alone by choice, revelling in their ability to dip in and out of company as they wish, but for others aloneness is not a choice. It is a situation foisted on them by circumstance.

It’s sad that in an era of instant communication there are people for whom communicating with the rest of the world is rare.

People who do not leave their homes and, if they do, they travel as solitary figures, people for whom a telephone never rings, a letter is never delivered, a thought never spared by past contacts or distant family.

Regardless of how each person came to be in a state of total aloneness, it is a modern-day human tragedy, but one whose cause should come as no surprise.

People are more mobile, families more fractured, friendships more fleeting today.

We no longer live in a country where everyone knows their neighbour, where families maintain close contact and where friendships are forged and maintained for life.

Many people have now become resigned to living within a cycle of loneliness, where emotional support, input and engagement are missing – day after day, week after week, year after year.

It’s easy to see how a person can move into a state of total isolation. It’s fine while they’re employed, but when work disappears and retirement takes over contacts are broken and perhaps the feeling of playing a small, but important part in the world disappears too.

We’re all guilty of passing by or dodging eye contact with a lone stranger, feeling guilty about someone we haven’t contacted for a long time and doing nothing about it.

Many of those who die alone have family from whom they’ve become estranged, friends who’ve walked away for reasons that no longer matter. Perhaps it’s time we all did a welfare check to see how those who have dropped off our radar are faring.

YOUR VIEW Silver fern The RSA and its members are particularly vocal against a change of flag, stating that our soldiers fought under the current flag and a change would be disrespectful to our soldiers who fought and died defending it.

On Saturday (March 12, 2016) The Guardian featured an article about two brothers from Tinwald, who gave their lives fighting in both Tunisia and Italy and were buried in each respective country. A photo of both graves featured in the article intrigued me. I noted that a Silver Fern was featured on both headstones!

I have since googled other New Zealand soldiers buried overseas and all feature the silver fern on their headstones!

My question is: Why is the silver fern featured on our soldiers’ graves and not the current New

Health and safety Health and safety are taking things too far when their legislation with regards to community pools comes into effect next month (article 14/03/16).

Bring back the '70s and '80s and the fun we had at the Homebush School pool!

We were there three times a day in the holidays.

Mum took her peas to pod and a book to read and developed lasting friendships with other mothers.

It was a central meeting place in our community. And at school

we had swimming lessons every summer day.

No we didn’t have qualified lifeguards, but we did have parents who took responsibility for us and were more than happy to take their turn at the upkeep of the pool. I do not recall that anyone injured themselves or drowned in that pool.

The number of drownings each year in our country is very sad.

Could it be that as we are losing these community pools kids are not learning to swim and so we lose more precious lives?

Maybe this is also a contributing factor to the unhealthy amount of time kids spend on screens and the childhood obesity problem. I think so.

Oh for the good old days where we had fun and used our Godgiven commonsense! I’m thankful I grew up then.

he latest drop in Fonterra’s milk payout came as a blow to farmers – dairy and the sheep and beef and arable farmers who supply them, already struggling to reduce costs in an increasingly difficult effort to make their budgets balance.

It was also a blow to the many, many businesses in this district that supply goods or services to farmers, from accountancy and engineering to retail and everything in between. And it is going to take time before conditions improve.

What can businesses do to help deal with the effects of reduced spending from the farming sector?

The most important thing is to not be too shy to ask for help, especially if you’re feeling stressed or worried.

There are a number of people and places business owners can go to for advice and support.

Your professional advisers – accountant or business adviser, legal adviser or bank manager – can put you in touch with the support you need.

Delivering excellent customer service With existing customers recognised as the lifeblood for businesses during a spending slowdown, delivering excellent customer service was identified as essential by businesses.

Being flexible and reliable to meet their requirements was cited as common methods to help keep current customers loyal as they tighten belts.

Diversify your product and customer base Looking at ways to adapt or broaden the appeal of a product may be a way of maintaining and growing your business.

This may be through opportunities that arise as a direct result of a spending downturn – yes, there can also be opportunities, or it could be re-looking at your business and adapting it for a different market And keep a close eye on your stock levels. Leaner, more efficient inventories mean less cash tied up in unproductive assets.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. To date Mid Canterbury has fared better than many other regions that have a strong dairy farming base and is likely to continue to do so. ‘Uber made me do it’ The man police say shot and killed six people in Kalamazoo, Michigan, last month told officers that he was being controlled by the Uber app on his phone when the shooting spree occurred, according to authorities.

When a police officer asked Uber driver Jason Brian Dalton about the shooting, he told them that when he opened the company’s app, a symbol appeared that “would literally take over your whole body,” an officer wrote in a police report released yesterday.

During an interview with detectives, Dalton said he did not remember shooting people, though he acknowledged that the families of people killed deserved an explanation for what happened.

After talking with the detectives for some time, Dalton was asked for an explanation and said that the reason “would blow [their] minds,” Det. William Moorian of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety wrote in his report on the interview.

“Dalton said that he understands now how the other mass shootings take place,” Moorian wrote.

“Dalton explained how he has experienced a full body takeover, that is how he can understand the other mass shootings.”

Dalton told detectives that he believed the Uber app controlled him, and said he pleaded the Fifth earlier in the interview to avoid coming across as a crazy person, Moorian wrote.

He went on to tell police that a symbol appeared – a devil-like image with horns – and would give him an assignment that he would follow and, at times, see himself from outside of his body, Moorian wrote.

He went on to tell detectives “about the Masons and the Eastern Star symbol” that he said popped up on the phone, but what he said “didn’t make any sense,” Moorian added.

In an interview with another

detective, Dalton said when he saw the Uber app shift from a red color to black, that is when he would get taken over “like a puppet.”

Uber declined to comment on the report’s release and Dalton’s statements.

In the days and weeks since Dalton allegedly gunned down random strangers while he was picking up fares for the service, investigators and neighbours alike have said they are baffled by the February 20 rampage.

During the spree, police said that Dalton shot eight people – six of them fatally – in three different locations spread over about four hours.

The victims included a high school senior and a 74-yearold woman.

Earlier this month, a judge ordered that Dalton undergo a mental competency examination to see if he can stand trial.

Jeffrey S. Getting, the Kalamazoo County prosecuting attorney, said yesterday he expected the evaluation to be completed soon.

Russian withdrawal ‘signifies successes’ President Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian military to withdraw most of its forces from Syria, timing his move to coincide with the launch of Syria peace talks yesterday – an end game that allows the Russian leader to cash in on his gains and reduce his risks in the conflict.

The start of the negotiations in Geneva offers Putin an opportune moment to declare an official end to the 5½-month Russian air campaign that has allowed Syrian President

Bashar Assad’s army to win back some key ground and strengthen his positions ahead of the talks.

With Russia’s main goals in Syria achieved, the pullback will allow Putin to pose as a peacemaker and help ease tensions with NATO member Turkey and the Gulf monarchies vexed by Moscow’s military action.

At the same time, Putin made it clear that Russia will maintain its air base and a naval facility in Syria and keep

some troops there.

Syria’s state news agency also quoted Assad as saying that the Russian military will draw down its air force contingent but won’t leave the country altogether.

The Syrian presidency said Assad and Putin spoke on the phone yesterday and jointly agreed that Russia would scale back its forces in Syria.

It rejected speculation that the decision reflected a rift between the allies and said the decision reflected the “suc-

cesses” the two armies have achieved in fighting terrorism in Syria.

The Syrian army said it would continue its operations against the Islamic State group, the Nusra Front and other terrorist organisations.

A White House statement said Obama welcomed Russia’s move, but also noted continued sporadic violence and urged Putin to pressure the Syrian regime to stop offensive actions that could undermine the fragile truce.

The role of health insurance

he New Zealand health insurance industry provides a much valued backstop for New Zealand families, ensuring coverage and early access to healthcare when the public system doesn’t.

There are a number of health insurers in the New Zealand market which provide a considerable level of choice for the consumer.

Around 1.35 million New Zealanders have health insurance to ensure peace of mind in times of difficulty.

While the public health system focuses on acute (emergency) services, private health insurers are able to cover the cost of many semi-urgent procedures. The health insurance industry complements the public health system by ‘bridging the gap’ between what the public health system can sustain and what the public want.

Private health insurance provides people with alternative healthcare options to the public system so they can access treatment and advice when they need it – taking away the uncertainty of future health care.

Medical practitioners, such as

GPs, are usually the first point of contact if you’re not well. The medical practitioner would refer you to a specialist if they can’t diagnose or treat your condition. Specialists are experts in a particular area of medicine, such as orthopaedics, paediatrics, gynaecology or urology etc.

If you are very ill or require acute treatment, you’d visit A&E or a public hospital where you will receive immediate attention.

The New Zealand public healthcare system will look after your acute needs and a public no-fault accident insurance scheme (ACC) that covers you for accidental injury. If you do not require immediate treatment (non-acute or elective surgery), require a specialist consultation or a diagnostic procedure (eg.

MRI), the public system will put you on a waiting list where you will go through an assessment process and qualify – a process which could take months, even years.

If you don’t qualify for publicly funded surgery you will need to consider paying for surgery yourself in a private hospital which can be costly, this is where health insurance can help.

Private healthcare in New Zea-

land includes specialist services, primary care and private hospitals which provide non-urgent and elective treatments that complement the public health service’s focus on urgent and essential treatments. Surgeons who work in the private system must also work in the public system.

There are also many private accident, emergency and medical clinics that operate in the private sector, often providing services outside the usual hours of doctors and clinics in the public system.

Having health insurance gives you the peace of mind that you can get the treatment you need, when you need it. The benefits of which are; faster access to treatment by avoiding public hospital waiting lists, less financial stress by reducing your costs of private treatment and time off work and more choice over when you receive treatment.

Australia’s largest web-based retailer Kogan.com will take over the Dick Smith brand as an online business on both sides of the Tasman starting on June 1 after buying the intellectual property and online assets including goodwill and brand from the receivers of the failed electronics chain.

Kogan.com founder and chief executive Ruslan Kogan said Dick Smith was an iconic Australian brand and he was thrilled to be able to keep it alive, as well as Australian-owned and run.

“I remember as a kid always visiting Dick Smith to look for parts to upgrade my computer,” he said in a statement. “There is a strong history of passion in the Dick Smith community for how tech-

■ Combine tomato sauce, chilli powder, cumin and lemon rind. Rub breasts in tomato mixture and leave to marinate for 30 minutes to 1 hour.

■ Heat a barbecue or grill and cook the chicken over medium heat turning often until cooked through.

Serve with corn salsa.

■ To make the corn salsa, mix corn with the chopped herbs, onion and caraway seeds. Make a dressing using the remaining ingredients and toss with the vegetables to complete the salsa.

Fritters the ultimate leftovers meal

H

1–2 cloves garlic 1–2 eggs A little stock, wine or water to mix if required Flour for coating

ow often do you open the fridge door and wonder, what can I make for dinner when there’s nothing obvious on its shelves.

That’s where fritters, rissoles and savoury cakes, usually based around potato, come into their own. Once you’ve got the basic recipe it’s a case of anything goes.

Vegetable, cold meat, fish, they’re all at home in a batter or potato mix and once you‘ve tossed in some herbs and a chilli or two those leftovers can become a complete meal with just the addition of a salad or some vegetables.

Corn, bacon and feta fritters 1C flour 1t baking powder 1/2 C milk 2 eggs, beaten 400g sweetcorn 4 rashers bacon, diced 100g feta, crumbled coarsely 3T fresh coriander, or parsley chopped 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1/2 t salt Olive oil 125g sour cream 2T sweet chilli sauce salad greens 2 tomatoes 1 avocado ■ Preheat the oven to 200°C. ■ Put the flour, baking powder, milk and eggs into a bowl and beat until smooth.

■ Add the sweetcorn to the batter with the bacon, feta, coriander, garlic and salt.

■ Mix well.

■ Fry large spoonfuls in moderately hot olive oil until well browned on each side.

■ Place the corn cakes on paper towels, on an ovenproof tray and put in oven for 5 minutes.

■ Mix the sour cream and sweet chilli sauce together.

■ Serve the corn fritters with the sour cream sweet chilli sauce ■ Add a green salad with tomatoes and avocado.

Courgette fritters 3C zucchini, grated (3-4 whole zucchini) 2T parsley, chopped 2 eggs, lightly beaten Salt and pepper 1C grated cheese or 200g crumbled feta cheese 1/3 to 1/2 C flour 1t baking powder Oil or ghee for frying ■ Drain the grated zucchini in a sieve, squeezing out as much liquid as possible.

■ Combine with the remaining ingredients in a mixing bowl.

■ Set aside for 10 minutes to allow the starch in the flour to absorb the liquid.

■ The mixture should be thick enough to hold its shape when dropped in the pan.

■ If the zucchini is quite watery, you may need to add extra flour

to thicken the mixture ■ Add 1 Tbsp at a time until the right consistency is reached.

■ Heat a heavy-based frying-pan over a moderate heat.

■ When hot, add a little oil or ghee, swirling it around the pan until the base is evenly coated ■ Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the pan ■ Cook until bubbles appear on the surface and the edges start to brown ■ Flip over and cook for a further 2-3 minutes until golden brown.

■ Keep warm in the oven and cook remaining mixture, ■ For a fluffier fritter, separate the eggs and whisk the egg whites until stiff.

■ Combine the egg yolks with the fritter ingredients as above, then gently fold through the egg whites.

200g corned beef, finely chopped Vegetable oil, for shallow frying ■ Sift flour into a bowl and make a well in the centre ■ Add egg and milk. Whisk until smooth.

■ Stir in cheese and beef. Season with salt and pepper.

■ Add enough oil to cover the base of a large frypan.

■ Heat over medium heat.

■ Drop a rounded tablespoon of mixture into the pan.

■ Cook for 2 minutes or until golden underneath and bubbles appear on the surface ■ Turn over and cook for 1 minute or until cooked through.

Meat rissoles Cold roast meat Cooked mashed potatoes Breadcrumbs Plain flour (optional) Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 onion 1 handful assorted fresh herbs,

■ Finely cut up cold meatand place in a large bowl.

■ Add potato, breadcrumbs herbs and salt and pepper.

■ Mix in finely chopped onion and crushed garlic ■ Add one or two eggs depending on quantity of meat and potato ■ The mixture should just hold together enough to be shaped into balls about the size of a large mandarin.

■ Flatten each ball to make a round patty about 1.5cm thick.

■ Spread a thin layer of flour over a plate and coat each patty lightly with flour on each side.

■ Stand for about 15 mins.

■ Coat a wide frypan lightly with a shallow layer of oil and heat until ready for gentle frying.

Chicken rissoles 500g chicken mince 125g can corn kernels, drained, rinsed 1/4 C grated tasty cheese 2T sweet chilli sauce 1 medium carrot, grated 2 green onions, finely chopped 100g button mushrooms, grated 1T olive oil Sweet chilli sauce and salad, to serve ■ Combine mince, corn, cheese, sweet chilli sauce, carrot, onion and mushroom in a bowl.

■ Form 12 rissoles.

■ Heat oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat.

■ Cook rissoles, in batches, for 2 minutes each side or until browned.

■ Transfer to prepared tray. Bake for 15 minutes in moderate oven.

■ Serve with sweet chilli sauce and salad.

Slicing, stitching and slowing time The Ashburton Art Gallery is hosting the work of celebrated New Zealand new media artist Daniel Crooks and the Chartwell Collection.

Static No. 16 (fisher-yates shuffle) opened March 5 and runs through until April 3.

The work conveys a populated urban setting, which is manipulated so time and motion are slowed down.

Mr Crooks uses an innovative time-slice video technique by using slices of moving images to create a digital collage.

The work plays with the richness of the environment and the movement of people who cross paths.

Turning wire into art Tekapo-based wire artist John Van Beek has dropped off an array of his distinctive sculptures to the Short Street Studio in preparation for an art sale at the weekend.

Afridi ‘a traitor’ Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has been accused of treason for suggesting his team get a warmer welcome in India. Afridi defended his comments by saying it was an attempt to charm the media after arriving in India for the upcoming World T20. However given the long-standing tensions between the two countries, his comments were not so welcome back in Pakistan. Afridi’s comments drew so much outrage that one Pakistani lawyer even says he has served him and the chairman of the country’s cricket board, Najam Sethi, with a legal notice. “He has committed treason.”

In the group behind him was former All Blacks coach John Hart, and in the group in front of him was former Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum.

He was amongst the country’s sporting elite.

After missing the cut, Kings-

bury then joined the others who had missed out at the Jacks Point course on the Saturday for the Jacks Point Open Challenge.

It was for teams of five (one pro and four amateurs) and Kingsbury’s team – which included former All Black Andrew Mehrtens – came fourth.

On Saturday night they attended a VIP party and for Kingsbury, that summed it up – for a few days he felt like a VIP.

“I had a chat with the PM at one stage, and Ricky Ponting, Allan Border, everyone who was there really … Justin Marshall, they were all brilliant, they’d all stop for a chat.”

On Sunday he played nine holes with Simon Doull, before returning home on Monday and heading back to work yesterday – back to the real world after an incredible taste of what the life of a golfer was like.

Schwartzel sounds a warning ahead of Masters South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel has tuned up his bid for a second Masters title with a playoff victory in the US PGA Tour’s Valspar Championship in Florida.

As Terry Kingsbury walked up to the tee to make his first shot at Millbrook Resort, his name and where he was from was announced over the loudspeaker.

It was a new and unnerving experience for the Mid Canterbury golfer, but it’s par for the course at a major golf tournament like the New Zealand Golf Open – and that’s where he was.

A keen golfer playing off a seven handicap, Kingsbury found himself playing amongst the country’s best thanks to winning a Sky TV competition, the prize for which was a place playing in the BMW ISPS HANDA New Zealand Golf Open Pro-Am. He was one of 144 amateurs paired up with 144 professionals, and other than winning a couple million dollars, Kingsbury probably couldn’t have asked for a better prize to win.

He played alongside Troy Ropiha, a pro out of Taupo, and they finished the two days – day one at Millbrook and day two at The Hills – at seven under and tied for 65th, only missing the cut by two shots.

“I thought I played pretty well.

“I had five birdies over the two days at the two courses,” Kingsbury said.

His highlights were his birdies on the ninth hole at Millbrook, and the 15th at The Hills.

“By God the golf courses were difficult. The greens were running super fast.”

Nadal serves it up to critics Maria Sharapova was the one done for doping, but Rafael Nadal’s been copping the heat - now he wants justice.

In the wake of the Russian’s admission that she tested positive for meldonium – a drug placed on WADA’s banned list at the start of 2016 – the Spaniard has been forced to defend himself against accusations that he too has doped in his career.

One of the more direct digs at the 29-year-old came from former French sports minister Roselyne Bachelot, who accused Nadal of faking a knee injury in 2012 - when he missed the final six months of the season - to cover up a positive drug test.

“We know about that famous injury of Rafael Nadal ... is certainly due to a positive test,” Bachelot said, adding that lengthy player injuries were “not every time, of course, but very often” drug coverups.

If Nadal has his way, Bachelot won’t get away with such slanderous accusations.

“There are a couple of times I’ve heard comments like this, and this is going to be the last one because I’m going to sue her,” Nadal said at Indian Wells.

“I am tired of these things.

“I let it go a few times in the past.

Not anymore.

“I’m going to sue her, and I’m going to sue everyone who’s going to comment something similar in the future, because I am tired of that.

“Now is the moment for justice ...

I want justice.”

Nadal was asked several days ago at the tournament in California if any of the accusations against him were true.

He went off.

“No f***ing way, forget about it.”

Nadal has never failed a drug test in his many years on the ATP Tour, and his staunch defence of that record continued on the weekend.

Real Madrid also released a statement and Nadal’s uncle Toni Nadal called Bachelot “an imbecile”.

Nadal hopes that with the support he has received he can now put the matter to bed once and for all.

“Believe me our sport is clean,” he told AFP. “If everybody is doing something wrong then the people go to the justice and go on trial and then the judge decides.

“Our sport is not a sport that covers up for people doing negative things.”

Shane Enright is back at the helm of Celtic after almost a decade away, and is set to lead the senior side in to a new season and a new era.

Enright’s credentials speak for themselves, both on and off the paddock.

The former halfback represented Southland throughout the agegroups and made two senior appearances - an NPC clash against Otago and a Ranfurly Shield challenge against Auckland.

After hanging up his playing boots, Enright embarked on a journeyed coaching career in

New Zealand and overseas.

He nurtured the young talent of the Southland under-14 and under-16 teams and then moved on to Otago under-18s before emigrating to Canada to take charge of the Calgary Hornets.

Enright returned to New Zealand five years later and took the reins at Hampstead, followed by his first spell with Celtic and then moved on to Ashburton College’s 1st XV. His three years with the 1st XV proved to be the most successful in College’s history – winning the South Island Co-ed title and making the top eight of the then Press Cup for the first time.

Enright then enjoyed a successful spell with Timaru Boys’ 1st XV, propelling them to the top eight of the Press Cup for only the second time and brought 11 years of hurt to an end with a victory over St Bede’s.

But, despite his vast coaching experience, the Southlander is now facing an unfamiliar challenge, one that can only be described as a changing of the guard.

Stalwart skipper and lock Dan Dwyer, versatile back Jason Feutz and seasoned halfback Mark Summerfield have all taken their talent and experience in to retirement.

And now, along with assistant player-coach Nick McCain, Enright will endeavour to nurture the new generation of Celtic players.

“Three stalwarts of the club have decided to retire, so it’s a huge change, but we’ve got some very good young players,” he said.

“Christian Vainerere, Nathan McCloy, Kirk Chettleburgh and Jacob Sutton - they’re four classy young individuals, so we have some really good kids.”

Enright is hoping to assist the progression of his rugby youngsters to Heartland level and beyond, insisting there are now

more opportunities than ever to make it in to the professional game.

“They can see the stepping stone of Mid Canterbury as a way to good things in the future,” he said.

“Our goal is to produce as many good players as we can for Mid Canterbury and maybe give them the opportunity to become professional rugby players.”

Following last year’s semi-final Watters Cup disappointment Enright is determined to go one better this season, and was clear when asked his goals for the 2016 campaign.

“To win, to win everything.”
