SFF’s payout plan bites back

Silver Fern Farms’ attempt to shaft a group of seasonal workers out of redundancy may have backfired.

The group of about 25 Pacific Island workers were among the 350 who lost their jobs when Silver Fern pulled the plug on its Fairton sheep meat processing operation two weeks ago.

Based in their home country, the Samoan workers were employed under

the Approval in Principle (AIP) seasonal work visa scheme, to work at the Fairton plant.

When the going got tough for the company last year, the workers were deployed to the company’s Belfast plant but paid from Fairton, presumably to get around the visa requirements, according to the Guardian’s source.

This season those workers were employed by Silver Fern Farms Ltd, which technically doesn’t operate any meat

processing plants, but is an over-arching company to SFF Beef, SFF Lamb and SFF Venison.

On this basis the company attempted to wriggle off the redundancy hook, when it came to paying out the migrant workers, our source revealed.

Preschool gets health tick

Jigsaw Preschool’s community takes its food very seriously, so seriously the centre is about to earn a New Zealand Heart Foundation healthy heart silver award.

The centre is one of the few in Ashburton that provides snacks and a midday meal for the youngsters in its care and centre manager Kim Begg said that’s a responsibility they don’t take lightly.

“We employ a nutritionist and we work with them to ensure we’re providing healthy food. Our menus are on a four-week cycle and our children receive five servings of seasonal, fresh fruit every day,” she said.

Begg said she was surprised at the findings of a survey of North Island childcare centres revealing that many were feeding children too much junk food and insufficient fruit and vegetables.

She believes Ashburton’s centres place a high importance on ensuring youngsters bring healthy food from home or, in the case of Jigsaw where meals are provided, that those meals are nutritionally well balanced.

Morning tea at Jigsaw is likely to be a vegetable platter with a yoghurt dip or crackers and hummus, lunch is always home cooked, no additives and a careful balance of vegetables, meat and carbs. And afternoon tea could be an apple and cinnamon loaf or a savoury muffin along with fruit.

deliver in terms of a menu and it’s all ticked off by a nutritionist. It’s well balanced and we also promote ourselves as a water and milk-only centre,” Begg said.

For the Jigsaw youngsters there’s also the opportunity to learn about the relationship between vegetables and fruit that grow in their grounds and the meal on their plate. Getting youngsters to eat their vegetables is rarely difficult, she said.

Menus, complete with a list of all ingredients, are available for parents to view and the menus themselves are compiled with input from both children and parents.

In the 18 months Jigsaw has been providing meals for its children, behaviours had changed as no additives were used in any of the food, Begg said.

“There are just all-round better outcomes for the children.”

Stepping Stones, like most Ashburton centres, does not provide meals, but manager Kim Wall said it has a nutrition policy around appropriate food for children to bring for snacks and for lunches. Staff work with parents to ensure they understand the importance of following those guidelines, she said.

“We always make sure our children bring enough food to sus-

tain them during the day. Everyone is guided by our nutritional principles and to make this work a close relationship with our parents is critical.”

Food is occasionally made at the centre, but when this occurs it is part of a learning process.

On those occasions whatever is made is always based around healthy eating, Wall said.

The decision not to provide food was based on the belief that children needed to learn how to manage their own food, she said.

“It’s good preparation for life if they can experience a range of textures and different food in their lunch box.”

Police have confirmed wanted man Michael John Hughes was one of three people arrested in Ashburton on Wednesday afternoon.

Hughes has been the subject of a manhunt since May 27 and was wanted to arrest on a number of offences committed in

Blenheim, Christchurch, Oamaru and Dunedin.

The 36-year-old, who has a distinctive tattoo of a fist on the right side of his face, was considered to be armed and dangerous. Members of the public were warned not to approach him.

Armed Offenders Squad officers assisted Ashburton police in the arrest, which took place on

West Street opposite the Ashburton Domain.

He was taken into custody without incident. Hughes appeared in the Christchurch District Court on a charge of aggravated robbery involving the theft of a vehicle, and a number of theft charges, yesterday afternoon.

He was remanded in custody.

SFF’s payout plan bites back From P1 In response to the Guardian’s request for comment, an SFF spokesperson responded: “Although the overall employment conditions are outlined within a collective employment agreement, their status is significantly different from our other workers as it terminates at the end of every season.

“Those employed under the AIP scheme receive a work visa allowing them to work up to 12 months. We are not in a position to offer these employees guarantees of work from year to year as we have to apply to the Ministry of Immigration on an annual basis for approval for these roles.

“The approval is based on our staffing needs and the availability of NZ-based staff in the region who could fill the available roles.

“Given these people are on a one-year work visa, and the fact that as per our AIP agreement we have been able to continue to offer work to them at other sites this season, we do not believe they are entitled to the redundancy provisions under the collective employment agreement.”

Canterbury Meat Workers Union secretary Bill Watt is disappointed in the company’s response.

The union has been working with SFF since the Fairton shutdown was announced, and was “fairly confident” of a resolution in the near future.

“We believe those workers were employed under the terms and conditions of the collective agreement negotiated by the New Zealand Meat Workers Union, which covers them for redundancy,” Watt said.

SFF has committed to continue to work with the AIP staff and the Meat Workers Union with the intention of re-deploying the workers to other South Island plants.

However, the union maintains those workers are entitled to the same treatment as the other Fairton staff who have opted to take up work at alternative SFF plants after collecting redundancy.

The Ashburton Toy Library needs a new home

The Ashburton Toy Library must find a new home soon if it is able to continue in the same format.

In March, committee members made a plea to the public for a new site as they were full to capacity.

However, they received little response and the situation is now getting more desperate.

Since 1994 they have been based at the Methodist Church Hall in Baring Square, but after 22 years of accumulating equipment, they are bursting at the seams.

If they cannot find a new location, they will continue at the church site, but face a rent increase and will have to take some toys out of circulation due to the space restrictions.

Ashburton Toy Library president Anthea Moore said committee members were meeting last night to work out a plan of action around the different options.

They would love to discuss potential solutions with local businesses, clubs or anyone who may have space that could be rented out.

“Even if another club or organisation would be willing to share the space,” she said.

“A couple of places came up, but they were unsuitable. One was a shared space, but it was not big enough.”

If they cannot find another building that is large enough, they say they are happy to stay at the church, but will have to take some toys out of circulation because they cannot fit into the current space.

“And it’s the big toys people want to hire,” she says.

Due to space, volunteers are re-

quired to pack away hundreds of bulky items into a smaller room at the end of each session.

Representatives are also due to attend a toy library training event where they hope to purchase more toys, but are worried where they will fit the excess.

They currently have more than 900 toys in the library, which services about 150 families in the community, and is run through

an annual membership.

“We’ve been with the church for 23 years, right from when we started in 1994,” said Moore.

Ashburton Toy Library vice president Jane Fowles said they will definitely continue, but the location determines how they can expand.

“We need the space. If the community wants the toy library to continue in the current growing

size, we need a new home,” she said. While they started with a “dream wish list”, they are now content with a site that is large enough and on the first floor.

The Ashburton branch is one of the biggest toy libraries in New Zealand.

Big clean-up job at Sallies’ family store

A massive clean-up is under way at the Ashburton Salvation Army’s Family Store on Cass Street after a vehicle ran through an exterior wall on Wednesday.

Most of the stock in the clothing section, where the Land Rover SUV came to a halt, will have to be dumped, the charity’s foodbank manager Judith Lilley said.

Yesterday the building re-

mained off limits to all except management, insurance assessors and tradespeople.

Lilley was confident the gaping hole in the southern wall and interior damage could be repaired, but was unsure when the store would reopen to the public.

The building also houses the charity’s foodbank, but there would be little disruption to that service, Lilley said.

However, she asked that only

those who urgently required assistance turned up today.

The foodbank is accessed by a separate entrance, which was still blocked by rubble yesterday.

Lilley said a close eye was being kept on staff who were working at the time of the incident, which occurred at 2.30pm.

While no-one was physically injured by the vehicle, a traumatised pregnant mother and her young child were transported by ambu-

lance to Ashburton Hospital and then to Christchurch Women’s Hospital for observation.

The driver of the vehicle was unharmed.

It is understood he was dropping donations at the collections bay behind the store. Witnesses said the vehicle reversed at speed into the brick exterior wall.

Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said investigations were ongoing, however the elderly man would

not be driving again until he received medical clearance.

“Police remind our more mature drivers to make an annual visit to their GP and take advantage of locally-run refresher driving courses to help reduce the chance of this type of incident occurring,” he said.

“On this occasion we were very lucky that only a small number of shoppers were in the shop at the time.”

Feathers, fluff and felines on the show bench

They’ve been bathed, primped, preened and finely polished and today’s their big day, the day when hundreds of poultry, ducks, geese, pigeons and bantams have their moment in the sun.

They’ll be among more than 650 feathered creatures who will star in this weekend’s Ashburton Fanciers’ Society show, vying for category honours, medals and award certificates.

And among those aiming to win championship honours will be local movie star Brian Glassey who became a household name after featuring in the movie Pecking Order that told the story of a poultry club in crisis and gave a behind the scenes look at the world of poultry breeding and showing.

Glassey has remained unfazed by his rise to fame and says he’ll be turning up with the rest of his club to help out on the day and to ensure his 50 prize birds are in top condition when they go before the judges.

Entries are down a bit for this year’s show, but that’s because the national poultry show will be held in Christchurch the following weekend, he said.

He’s hoping the Pecking Order will boost numbers through the door for the two-day show.

“It’s certainly generated a lot of interest but we’re still waiting for that to get us some more members,” he said.

Organisers will be keeping a close eye on door takings this year, Glassey said.

The poultry show runs today and tomorrow in the Ashburton Sports Hall. Doors open at 2pm today and at 1pm tomorrow when cavies, rabbits and cats will join the poultry on display.

Remembering Maronan’s past

Maronan man Frank Fletcher is about to dig into the past, but says he needs a little help.

At a meeting of the area’s domain board recently, the board decided to put itself out of business, but Fletcher doesn’t want the area to be forgotten.

He plans to build a sign that will list the names of the district’s founders, the people who settled the area, broke ground and built homes, but

says he wants a little help to make sure none of those early families are forgotten.

The district’s domain is home to an elderly building that was built as a school but in later years served as a community hall. The reserve land is rented and maintained by a neighbouring farmer and the hall itself is used as storage by the Ashburton Operatic Trust.

Attempts were made to sell the old school but the cost of moving it to a new location meant the of-

fer found few takers. It cannot be converted to a home because it has been built on reserve land.

No further money will be spent on the hall and its water and electricity supplies have been disconnected.

The land, however, will remain a reserve and when Fletcher’s sign is completed and a few new trees planted, the site will become a memorial to the area’s early settlers.

When the memorial is completed the site will be handed over to the Hinds Reserve Board.

Sewer work completed The inconvenience might have been above ground, but the convenience of having new sewer pipes buried beneath Harrison Street and Walnut Avenue will last for decades, says Ashburton District Council projects and operations manager Viv Eyberg.

Over several months both streets have been progressively dug up as old pipes were replaced with new larger pipes, but this has meant months of disruption, delays and detours for motorists.

Harrison Street has also been treated to new kerb and

channel with the old, open gutters being replaced by new water mains.

Work, however, is almost completed and old water mains and sewer mains are now being decommissioned.

Over the past two nights there have been traffic delays on West Street as the Walnut Avenue roundabout has been reinstated. This will now be a solid concrete area rather than a flower bed.

Just the stretch of sewer from Creek Road to State Highway 1 is still to be replaced.

Methven trust on fundraising mission

Methven Care Trust is planning two fundraisers as it aims to get to its first million dollars.

With its bank balance having increased to about $510,000 from about $450,000 six months ago, there is still plenty of work to do as the trust aims towards its $5.5 million goal.

Methven Care Trust is to rebuild community-owned Meth-

ven House rest home at a new site in Camrose Estates.

The trust is holding a variety concert next month and then in October will stage its inaugural Team Challenge Mini Olympics.

It was a suggestion from the late Ian Totty which initiated the concert idea, and this will be held July 21 at the Mount Hutt Memorial Hall.

A talented group of singers known as The Fascinating Ladies,

led by Methven music teacher Kate Lambarth, will perform alongside and with the Men’s MSA choir, of which Totty was a member.

Further musical guests from the Methven area will also perform.

Tickets include supper and are available at iSITE in Methven and Ashburton and from choir members.

The mini Olympics, for 18 years

and over, will see teams of four compete in archery, golf, clay bird shooting and gumboot throwing.

There will be a prizegiving with spit roast, auction and raffles, and awarded will be an overall trophy, as well as prizes for the top male and female, top team and best themed team.

“The mini Olympics will be held October 13 at the site of the proposed new rest home.

Lorde felt “rocked” by criticism she faced when she became a global star at the age of 16.

Sell-out crowd for lip-sync Ashburton College students strutted their stuff on the college auditorium stage in front of a sell-out crowd on Wednesday night.

It was their annual lip sync competition, and performers energetically delivered a range of items to keep the audience entertained.

In a highly competitive senior section, Year 12 pupil Michael Baker won, while Spice Up Your Life’s Maddy Bremner, Britney Moore, Lily Burdett, Mickayla Milmine and Tessa Inwood of Year 11 came second, and third were Year 13 pupils Jemma Piercy, Annalise Reilly and Melissa Maslin

performing Candyman.

First in the junior section were Uptown Funk All-Stars with a well choreographed Bruno Mars piece. Members of the group were Year 10 pupils Andy Melrose, Rubie Williams, Abbie Wallington, Arnold Pantoja, Ken Bulagnir and Ocean Waitokia. Second were Year 9 pupils Hannah O’Reilly and Olivia Lill, while Year 9 pupil Coty Cuadrado, supported by senior students in a back-up capacity, was third.

Countdown on until wheelie bins arrive

The countdown is on until wheelie bins are delivered to thousands of homes across the Ashburton District.

September 1 has been set as the day the wheelie bin kerbside collection will start and that means the day of the black plastic rubbish bag is almost over.

Ashburton District Council service delivery manager Neil McCann said the bins are currently being made and the project is on target to meet its September 1 start date.

“And that means people need to be careful not to buy too many of the black rubbish bags,” he said.

The current collection contract with Mainly Waste, due to end on June 30, has been rolled over to allow an additional two months

for the wheelie bin project to be wrapped up, McCann said.

Collection days are still to be finalised as the area covered by the new service has been extended to take in Lake Hood, Chertsey and rural areas around Tinwald and Ashburton.

The new service will also mean significant changes at the Resource Recovery Park, he said.

Wheelie bins will be delivered shortly before the new service begins.

Each property will receive a bin for waste and a second bin for recycling. The green crates currently in use will be retained for glass. Black rubbish bags will not be accepted when the new service begins.

The council is currently working through the tender process for its waste education programme.

Lessons for New Zealand from high-rise fire The Auckland Fire Service has offered up some key safety tips for people who live or work in multi-storey buildings in light of the Grenfell Tower disaster in London.

A blaze ripped through the 24-storey tower in West London, killing at least 12 people in what has been called a “disaster waiting to happen” by experts.

Hundreds of the roughly 500 residents in the block were unaccounted for. Some estimated that the death toll could rise above 100.

The Auckland City Fire Area posted tips to their Facebook page accompanied by a photo of the Grenfell Tower fire, saying their “thoughts are with those involved in the tragedy and with our colleagues of the London Fire Brigade”.

Some of the tips mentioned include knowing your way out of the building, treating all fire alarms as real and evacuating immediately, not storing rubbish or goods in escape routes, leaving fire stop doors unlocked, and placing a wet blanket or towel under a closed door if you are

Grenfell Tower, London trapped and calling 111 immediately.

The Fire Service post said building owners must display evacuation procedures within a building, and they must have an approved evacuation scheme for the building, including carrying out trial evacuations regularly.

Fire hazards should be reported to building managers, if they fail to act then the Fire Service should be notified.

Meanwhile Auckland Council will be looking to learn lessons from the tragedy that has unfolded in London.

Auckland Council building control general manager Ian McCormick said most of the information they currently have on the fire has come through the media as it is “early days”, but they are in contact with colleagues on the ground in London.

“Absolutely we will be [talking to people in London],” he said.

He said it was hard to be specific on what could change here as a result of the tragedy, but the New Zealand and United Kingdom fire codes were “quite similar”.

In the Daily Mail, a woman who worked as a property manager for Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Council said the fire could have been avoided if it wasn’t for the use of “cutprice cladding” when the building was refurbished in 2016.

McCormick said the same type of aluminium composite cladding was used in New Zealand, although it wasn’t common.

“There’s many different types and many different manufacturers. None of these types of claddings are fire-proof.

“It’s one component in isolation.”

Larger new home needed for toy library Megan Gnad

C

an you help the Ashburton Toy Library find a new home?

I bet quite a few of our readers either spent many hours with their children at the local branch, or maybe even you yourself benefited from the hundreds of toys on offer.

Unfortunately, all the hard work and effort from fundraisers and community volunteers over the years, has resulted in a building that is full to the brim.

Sure, they’re more than happy to stay at the Methodist Church Hall in Baring Square.

They’ve been there since 1994 and it’s worked well, but the crux of the matter is, they’re finding it near impossible to store all the equipment onsite.

So, if it is able to continue in the same format, and at the same level of growth, the Ashburton Toy Library must find a new home – quickly.

In March, we put out a plea requesting members of the public come forward with spaces that may be suitable, but the toy library received little response and suggestions were unsuitable.

Visiting the toy library on an opening morning, it is clear to see why organisers – and supporting families – would be reluctant to reduce the impressive collection they have amassed.

Spread out across the floor, children can choose to hire out scooters, mini tractors, cooking sets, dolls, puzzles, bikes and much, much more for a variety of ages.

It’s a childhood paradise.

Yet, due to space, volunteers are required to pack away more than 900 items into a smaller room at the end of each session.

It’s getting too cramped to deliver the service in the same format to the 150 families registered in the community.

It would be such a shame if they were forced to downsize because of growth and demand.

If you have a site, a building, a shed, a property or something suitable, give them a bell.

Their hope is that with community support, and a roll that keeps on growing, the new site will successfully see them through the next 30-odd years.

When we asked you if you thought they should be banned inside the classroom, a definite 87 per cent of you agreed they should be.

But, many of you also felt people should lighten up. It’s just another craze, much the same as yo-yos and knuckle bones, and is keeping kids away from screen time.

So, what do you think? Is it time they were banned, or an overreaction? Have you had positive experiences with them, for instance helping with quitting smoking or as a tool to improve focus in children?

Each class will have rules for them and my daughter said her teacher used them in a math lesson last week. on’t you dare put veggies in my coffee or I’ll belt you with my fanny pack!

It seems every week I come across a story about the need for regular sleep.

Maybe the stories stick out to me because as anybody else who gets up at 4am will tell you, it’s very hard to get the recommended seven hours sleep in when you’re out of the scratcher at that hour.

I always thought that if I skimped a bit during the week I could always make up for it in the weekend with a ‘catch up’ lazy, sleepy, no-alarm type of morning (or two!).

Now the good doctor is pouring cold water on that idea as well.

Seems that extra sleep could be slowly killing you. Or at least negatively affecting your health.

A new study says those extra hours of sleep on the weekend, known as social jetlag, can not only lead to bad moods and fatigue, but for each hour of catch-up sleep that you get, it could increase your risk of heart disease by 11 per cent.

With my family history in that department, I’m not needing to increase anything in a bad way there!

So, maybe I’ll get up a bit grumpy, but at least I can rely on a nice cup of coffee to put a smile on my dial.

A strong but milky plunger coffee is my go-to at home and I can’t see that changing anytime soon if these new coffee trends are anything to go by.

Maybe trends is giving them too much credit to be fair, they are more like experiments.

Baristas around the world are experimenting with hiding vegetables in coffee drinks.

Was that a gagging sound I just heard?

A café in Australia is serving coffee in hollowed-out avocados!

Some of the ideas floated so far: lattes flavoured with carrots, bell peppers, tomatoes and even apples.

Now before you go and decide that you need to be ahead of the curve and order up a tray of these for the gang at the office, please know that even the cafes where they are being tried admit

that they aren’t going over too well. Although there is the curiosity factor, most agree that this is not something that should be happening. Thanks god for that!

As you know, I like to keep abreast of all the latest and greatest in the world of fashion.

Not! I do realise that a lot of fashion is cyclical, but I can’t believe these are making a comeback.

After decades of being referred to as the uncoolest accessory, it appears that the lowly fanny pack might be poised for a comeback.

That’s right, a number of Hollywood stars have made it the must-have of the moment.

The coolness factor of the bag has risen over the past few years with Kendall Jenner and rapper A$AP Rocky proudly sporting them. Leonardo DiCaprio was seen with one on a trip to Thailand. Sofia Richie wears hers hiking and Kourtney Kardashian has a few Chanel versions herself.

The 2017 fanny pack isn’t like the one you bought at the tacky tourist trap when you were fresh off the plane to Florida.

Today’s have STYLE. And a nameplate.

Expect to pay anywhere from $30 to $500.

Oh, and one more thing. Don’t call them that. Today’s style mavens refer to them as belt bags.

Residents demand answers With smoke still swirling around the charred remains of Grenfell Tower in west London, residents and community leaders demanded to know how a ferocious fire could have swept through the high-rise apartment block with such speed that it killed at least 12 people.

The anger was particularly strong since activists had warned just seven months ago that fire safety procedures were so lax that only a catastrophic blaze would bring the scrutiny needed to make the building safe.

Fire and police officials have not specified what went wrong, but extensive video footage shows the flames climbing the exterior of the building at a remarkable pace.

“I’ve never seen a fire like that in my life,” said Joe Ruane, the former deputy chief fire officer for US Air Force bases in Britain. “I’ve never seen that in a residential block.”

The 24-storey public housing complex is owned by the local council in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea and was completed in the 1970s.

It is managed by the Kensington and Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation, which spent $US12.8 million refurbishing the building over

The renovation project included installation of insulated exterior cladding, double-glazed windows and a communal heating system.

Investigators need to look at what materials were used in the project and who approved their use, Ruane said. But he

said the speed with which the fire spread suggests that more than one fire protection safeguard failed.

“It’s not just one thing,” Ruane said. “It’s multiple issues.”

While investigations are under way to determine what went wrong, tenants said repeated complaints were ig-

nored. Survivor Edward Daffarn said the management organisation, is responsible because it ignored numerous warnings.

A local community organization, the Grenfell Action Group, had warned about fire dangers at the building since 2013.

Director apologises

Mueller to probe Trump ‘obstruction’ The special counsel appointed to investigate Russian influence in the 2016 presidential campaign is now examining whether President Donald Trump tried to obstruct justice, The Washington Post reported.

Accusations of obstruction arose last month when Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. Comey testified in a Senate hearing last week that

Zealand missed expectations, growing only 0.5 per cent for the quarter and 2.5 per cent for the year. Expectations were for quarterly growth of 0.7 per cent and annual growth of 2.7 per cent.

Agriculture showed a massive improvement for the quarter, up 4.3 per cent driven by higher milk production.

This was the highest quarterly growth for the sector since September 2014. Construction was down 2.1 per cent for the quarter in its first fall since June 2015.

In Australia, Labour force data showed a continuing trend of increasing full time employment, while part time employment also saw a jump. The unemployment rate fell to 5.5 per cent, ahead of expectations for it to remain at 5.7 per cent while the labour force increased slightly to 64.9 per cent.

This is in contrast to the Westpac consumer sentiment survey.

This is the third month in a row of falling consumer confidence and remains a contrasting figure to the upbeat business confidence survey. Economic conditions, the government’s budget, taxes and interest rates were the top news topics recalled by consumers, and developments in all were judged as “unfavourable”.

The index came in at 96.2. A reading below 100 indicates that pessimists outweigh optimists.

Plenty of data points to digest fter a tumultuous week last week, that saw a surprise result in the UK election, markets were looking forward to a less dramatic week. However, there were plenty of data points to digest including the all important US Federal Reserve June meeting, New Zealand’s first quarter GDP as well as the continued focus on the UK, to name just a few.

The UK election surprised markets and left them reeling after it resulted in a hung parliament.

Prime Minister Theresa May called the snap election when the Conservative Party had a considerable lead in the polls. However, several weeks down the track, this lead narrowed considerably and after the British people had been to the polls, it emerged that the conservatives had lost the eight seat advantage they had going into the election. May has now been scrambling to strike a deal with the Democratic Unionist Party.

The British pound has fluctuated since the election, as has the FTSE 100, with further uncertainty gripping the region.

The US Federal Reserve’s June meeting resulted in yet another 25 basis point increase in the Fed Funds rate. The hike was widely expected. The interesting part was the commentary. There were two main focuses for the market; firstly was the Fed still anticipating another rate hike this year following some softer economic data and the increased uncertainty that has been seen in recent weeks?

In a confident move the Fed still anticipates a further rate hike this year, sticking with plan. The most

remoteness and weak competitive pressures were key factors, it said.

The OECD – Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development – is made up of 35 mostly high-income and developed countries.

Soaring house prices pose a risk to the financial system while Kiwi’s living standards are being held back by poor productivity, according to a global report.

The OECD’s 2017 Economic Survey of New Zealand, released yesterday, has called for the Reserve Bank to be allowed to bring in debt-to-income ratio limits for mortgages to make banks safer.

Its authors said high levels of household debt combined with surging house prices posed risks to otherwise strong economic growth driven by immigration, construction and tourism.

The Reserve Bank recently released a consultation paper saying it wanted to add “debt-to-income ratio restrictions” - which would mean people could only borrow a multiple of their income - to its kit of tools for potential future use.

Hi-tech features abound N ew Zealand’s favourite compact car for more than a decade has been made even better with the arrival of an all new generation model boasting a host of the latest technology.

Roomier, more efficient and more refined, the latest Suzuki Swift boasts crisp styling and flair plus improved specifications that are likely to ensure the car follows in the successful wheel tracks of its predecessor.

The new Swift is offered with several advanced features such as adaptive cruise control, a first for a Suzuki model sold in New Zealand.

It is also the first Suzuki model anywhere in the world to have a dual sensor brake support system. Automatic headlamp levelling and other driver assistance systems such as a forward detection system are also offered on higher grade versions.

Standard equipment on GLX and RS versions of new Swift, the forward detection system uses a state of the art monocular camera, laser sensor and millimetre wave radar, and detects pedestrians and other obstacles.

The laser sensor is used for short distances and at night, warning of potential collisions and acting in several ways to prevent it.

Adaptive cruise control uses the wave radar to automatically maintain a safe following distance, depending on the setting and vehicle speed. Lane departure

warning operates at 60 km/h or more, and warns of weaving that could be the result of driver fatigue.

High beam assistance at speeds in excess of 40 km/h automatically activates the headlights between high and low beams depending on the presence of other vehicles and the lighting environment.

Integrated daylight running lights are another safety feature.

Built on a new, highly rigid platform and powered by the choice of two fresh engines, including a turbocharged option for the first time, the Swift manages to inherit the styling cues that made the previous

two generation models so popular.

Remarkably, while the new car is 10mm shorter than the outgoing model, there is more interior space and a larger boot by 32 litres.

The styling is a natural progression of the earlier model that earned the car so much appeal while the specification is more advanced and comprehensive than before. Immediately recognisable by restyling of the front end with a bold ushaped grille, the new Swift has enhanced carry-over elements, including strong shoulders, black A-pillars and vertically arranged front and rear lights.

Resolute efforts were made so that the latest Swift would inherit the model’s characteristic styling and these elements were transformed to advance the general appearance of the car.

Suzuki engineers resisted the temptation to increase the body dimensions and the overall length of 3840mm is 10mm shorter than the outgoing Swift.

However, the wheelbase measures 20mm more to 2450mm, and body width increases by 40mm, all in the interest of improving cabin space. New Zealand specification Swifts are wider than those built for the Japanese domestic market.

The new Swift body is also 15mm lower while the cabin hip point is lowered 20mm at the front and 45mm at the rear, further increasing headroom.

There is a muscular and well-grounded look and black pillars create the appearance of a floating roof. High positioning of the rear door handles in the C pillars add style and character to the car’s profile.

The RS Swift benefits from the brand new K10C BoosterJet direct injection engine that develops a lusty 82kW at 5500rpm and 160Nm of torque from as low as 1500rpm. The power and torque output of this turbocharged 998cm3 engine is similar to a naturally aspirated 1800cm3 size power train.

MacPherson strut and coil spring suspension has been further refined and the RS has four wheel disc brakes, ventilated up front, and 16-inch polished aluminium alloy wheels with 185/55 size tyres.

Time to smarten your E-Type?

T he staff at Classic Motor Cars of Bridgnorth (CMC), who restored 1961 Jaguar E-Type Chassis No. 60 owned

by Chris Anderson, used the car as the basis of the ultimate E-Type Jaguar Restoration Manual.

The manual will take the reader through the full nut-and-bolt restoration of a very early example, E-Type Chassis No 60.

Skilled mechanics and technicians from worldclass restorers CMC, have written each chapter, giving a first-hand account of the process with 224 pages and 700 photos showing the level of detail that goes into their award-winning restorations.

The car was the sixtieth E-Type to leave Jaguar’s production line in 1961; not only a very early ‘flat floor’ 3.8 litre model dating from the first few weeks of production, but also one of the earliest surviving right-hand drive E-Type roadsters, and had never been restored.

Anderson bought it at auction in 2013 and sent it to CMC to bring it back to the condition that it would have left the factory in 1961.

It took CMC 3500 hours to restore and since then it has received many awards, including Best of Show at the 2015 RAC Midsummer Drive-In. David Barzilay, Chairman of CMC and editor of the manual, said: “CMC wanted to provide the ultimate E-Type restoration manual and they decided that the best way to do it was to allow individual specialists to write their own chapters.”

He added: “We are delighted to have presented the manual at the first ever City Concours at the Honourable Artillery Company headquarters in the heart of the City of London, where Chassis No 60 was on display for two days alongside more than 80 exceptional historic and modern cars.”

Those bright ideas ... to say to others “you must go to a particular movie” and consequently will not go as far as to say that about McLaren.

But maybe the words of the lady taken on the mystery trip say it for him.

She, by her own words, is perhaps only mildly interested in motor sport or racing drivers, said “you don’t have to be to enjoy this film”.

The idea of the motoring writer, whose name is not Roger, sort of didn’t turn out to be so bright after all, but there again maybe it did, because by involving others who have far brighter ideas we all ended up having a great time and in fact being illuminated about the life of an iconic Kiwi.

We didn’t see the lights of Methven this time round, but hopefully the show will be repeated next year.

Rumour has it the Hart cousins have already planned to add 24 hours when they tell the writer of this story the date when the Methven illuminations will occur next year!

Now that could be a bright idea!

One of our two motoring writers, not the one called Roger, had this idea which he suggested to the other motoring writer being the one called Roger.

The one who had the idea, who as you may have guessed is also the writer of this story, suggests his idea was a “bright” one.

And fair enough too because the bright idea was to take a trip to Methven to see the official switching on off the lights which have illuminated the town.

The suggestion was to go to Methven enjoy the atmosphere among the street vendors and sample some of their fare.

Our other motoring writer, the one called Roger, came up with an additional bright idea, the doco-movie McLaren would be screening in Methven that night, so it seemed like a very bright idea to take it in whilst in Methven.

So the plan was hatched, of course Rowena and Marlene were included although the latter lady was not informed of the destination, she being a trusting soul decided she was prepared for a mystery trip.

We were also joined by Stuart and Anne Hart.

It just so happened Roger was test driving a Holden Barina, so at the appointed time on the Saturday night the six of us headed off to Methven.

When Roger reports on the car I suspect he will amongst other things describe it as a comfortable, roomy car, but it needs to be clarified the six of us did not all travel in it.

But the thought of that brings back a story we’ve enjoyed recounting over the years about the six people who travelled to a party in a Morris Minor 1000.

Two in the front seats, two facing forward on the back seat; and having taken the back off the back seat two sitting looking backwards with their feet in the boot.

All went fine until near the destination they realised the only person who knew the venue was one of those looking backwards.

But being somewhat ingenious, the driver simply put the car in reverse and followed instructions from the navigator looking out the back window.

We’re not sure how they got home.

Anyway, I digress.

The trip to Methven seemed to pass quickly and that’s not because we were exceeding the speed limit, but simply because we were enjoying the trip, and

time flies when you’re in great company having fun.

Like so many trips around Mid Canterbury, the one to Methven is always interesting because the views are everchanging, depending on the time of day and of year and the weather conditions.

That evening in the semi-darkness the mountains were sharply defined against the backdrop of a clear sky.

Spectacular!

Once we got to Methven we started to think there weren’t many people about, and even fewer – in fact no – street stalls.

A quick enquiry made it obvious why and also made it obvious the so called bright idea of the motoring writer, who is not called Roger, wasn’t quite so bright after all.

It has occasionally been suggested the said motoring writer is sometimes running a little close to time, but he certainly made up for any such accummulated misdemeanours that night, for as you’ve probably guessed, he was a day ahead of himself.

So no street food to be found and no illuminations that night!

That’s when the motoring writer called Roger and his cousin Stuart came up with a really bright idea, namely to go to a delightful Irish bar which derives its name from the capital of the southern part of Shamrock Land and which has been a

major supporter of the Dubliner Mountain Thunder Methven motorcycle races.

Having a meal sitting in front of their fabulous open fire certainly was a bright idea. Then all we had to do was go right next door to the fabulous Paradiso Cinema, where McLaren was being screened.

A small cinema with a great screen and incredible sound, it proved to be an ideal place to see the movie.

In the film, famed Kiwi director Roger Donaldson has focused on interesting times in the life of Bruce McLaren, a truly incredible New Zealander.

The movie includes fascinating family recollections, photos and movies and other really interesting historical footage featuring drivers and racing and interviews with many legendary characters.

It’s a moving story of a man whose life ended far too soon, but not before he overcame a variety of difficulties, and through sheer determination and by following his dream achieved so much.

If his achievements had ended when he was taken from us they would still be remarkable, but because of what he did and because he inspired others his achievement lives on and now 47 years later (one and a half times as long as he lived) his legacy not only remains, but has gone from strength to strength.

This motoring writer is always reluctant

Right – In 1958 McLaren won the Driver to Europe scholarship, and in Germany he competed in a F1 race with an F2 car and finished an incredible fifth overall.

Bruce McLaren was born in Auckland on August 30, 1937.

His father who had raced cars had a motor business.

He spent his 10th and 11th birthdays on a hospital stretcher, having been told his crippling Perthes disease meant he’d probably never walk again.

Sheer determination meant that he did.

His time spent in traction did not deter Bruce’s ambition to drive cars and he secretly arranged “spinal chair races” in the hospital.

Returning home his parents encouraged him and it was apparent from an early age that Bruce McLaren was a “natural” driver, designer, mechanic and constructor.

His racing career began in an Austin Ulster.

His talent was soon recognised and he was sponsored to travel to and compete in the UK. Success came almost immediately and at age 22 he was the then youngest driver to win a Formula One race.

He also had the rare distinction of winning a Formula One race in a car designed and built by its driver and bearing the driver’s own name.

In 1965 Bruce married Patricia (Pat or Patty, nee Broad) from Timaru who was a former Miss Caroline Bay. Pat features in McLaren the movie, but sadly passed away before its release.

They had one daughter, Amanda, who is involved with McLaren cars.

Bruce died on June 2, 1970, aged 32, as the result of an accident while testing a car at Goodwood.

A man who gained widespread respect and described as a down-to-earth person with a wonderful sense of humour, Bruce McLaren could mix with and make friends amongst all stratas of society.

Because of his vision and inspiration the McLaren brand has become legendary.

Smith to lead All Blacks Ben Smith will become the 68th All Blacks Test skipper after being named to lead the world champions out for their season-opening Test against Samoa.

The world class fullback, a veteran of 60 Tests, will captain an experienced team for the clash at Eden Park tonight.

Flanker Sam Cane was considered a good chance to be named skipper in the absence of the injured Kieran Read, having done so twice before.

However, coach Steve Hansen went for a man who has impressed as Highlanders co-captain for two seasons and was appointed to that role with the All Blacks last year.

Smith will be the first fullback to lead the All Blacks since Mils Muliaina did for three Tests in 2009.

Read is expected to be fit for the first Test against the British and Irish Lions on June 24.

His No. 8 berth is taken this week by livewire Ardie Savea, whose previous 12 appearances were as a reserve or a flanker.

Regarded previously as an openside specialist, Savea has started five games at No. 8 for the Hurricanes this year.

The Test will be a special one for the Barrett family, after three brothers were included in the 23, including the uncapped Jordie Barrett on the reserves bench.

Lock Scott Barrett is also on the bench while starting first five-eighth Beauden, the reigning world player of the year, will play his 50th Test.

Assuming both reserves come on, it will be the first time three All Blacks brothers have played

Lions name team to face Maori All Blacks The British and Irish Lions’ Test team appears only a step closer to resolution after coach Warren Gatland named his squad to face the Maori All Blacks on Saturday.

The match in Rotorua comes a week out from the first Test against the All Blacks and was widely expected to be a dress rehearsal for Gatland’s firstchoice team.

Gatland has made a full 15 changes to the side that fell 2322 to the Highlanders on Tuesday, reverting partly to those who secured victory with a defensively flawless performance against the previously unbeaten Crusaders in Christchurch.

However, a number of likely Test inclusions, including goalkicking five-eighth or centre Owen Farrell, lock Alun Wyn Jones, hooker Ken Owens and tighthead Dan Cole, are not in the starting side, with some on the bench.

Nor is skipper Sam Warburton, with Irish loose forward Peter O’Mahony to captain the side for the first time in their “unofficial fourth Test”.

“We were obviously disappointed with the loss against the Highlanders and realise that we need to improve in several areas, including our discipline,” Gatland said.

“But we feel that overall we are building well.

“Every game is a big challenge, which is what we wanted.”

Radradra keen to return Parramatta star Semi Radradra has begun negotiations to return to the NRL club after his French rugby union stint expires next year.

Team NZ out to evolve Just as the Team New Zealand boat is undergoing some fine tuning ahead of this weekend’s opening races in the America’s Cup, the crew are also focusing on sharpening up their act.

After a day off the water on Wednesday while the New Zealand boat underwent further upgrades, Team NZ were back out on the Great Sound for two practice sessions yesterday.

The team docked out midmorning to test out their newlyrepaired second wingsail, taking it through a few systems checks before returning to their base to swap out some equipment and head back out on the water for a more lengthy training run.

Emirates Team New Zealand cyclor Josh Junior said the training isn’t just focused on testing out new equipment – there’s also gains to be made in their crewwork and tactics.

“We’re just looking to evolve where we’re at and trying to make the boat faster and learn to sail it better. We’ve got things we want to work on and keep improving.

We’re just chipping away and slowly but surely getting better and better,” said Junior.

We have five or six really strong guys we rotate through and it’s good to give some guys a rest and switch in and out.”

He estimates by the time the team leaves Bermuda, the cyclors would have pedalled the equivalent of thousands of kilometres.

“Before we came here we did a few rides to the Coromandel for training, and we used to be really tired after that. When we’ve had a big day on the water, we kind of come off thinking ‘that felt like riding to the Coromandel’, so we sort of compare it to that,” he said.

“We would have done a lot of kilometres, that’s for sure.”

Black Sticks have to settle for a draw with Spain

Ashcoll girls lose, boys win Ashburton College’s basketball teams recorded a win and a loss in their premier secondary school league games this week.

The senior boys beat St Andrew’s College 78-66 in Christchurch on Wednesday night, while the senior girls lost to St Andrew’s in the dying seconds in their game at Oxford Street on Tuesday night.

Both the boys’ Thompson Trophy competition, and the girls’ Whelan Trophy had had a week’s break while the under-19 nationals were under way in Auckland, and it was a tough match-up for the girls after the week off.

With Ashlee Strawbridge and Dani McArthur sidelined due to illness and injury, Ashcoll had to rely on its depth to compete

against a talented STAC team.

The first quarter saw both teams exchanging baskets and the lead, with STAC pulling away slightly to hold a 13-16 advantage going into the second quarter.

Ashburton’s New Zealand under-16 representative Sophie Adams and her older sister Grace found the bucket in the second stanza, combining for 11 points and giving college a 30-26 lead at the half.

STAC’s own Junior Tall Fern and Canterbury Wildcats player Charlotte Whittaker came to life in the third quarter, dropping 11 of her 25 game points to pull STAC even with the college girls on 39 apiece going into the fourth.

With STAC pulling away by four mid-way through the quarter,

the college girls needed a spark.

Some defensive pressure from guards Liberty Ross and Sammy Arnold forced the turnovers they needed, while forward Summer Anderson was able to convert on the other end.

With under 30 seconds on the clock college had possession and a slender one point lead. Some desperate defensive pressure from STAC led to a tie ball and gave them possession with eight seconds remaining. A last second shot off the glass went in before the clock could expire, giving STAC the win 54-53.

Grace Adams top scored for Ashcoll with 12 points, while sister Sophie had 11.

Next week sees the college girls, now 2-3, travel to Burnside

for the school’s annual exchange which will also double as their Whelan Trophy competition game.

The senior boys will also be taking on Burnside in a Thompson Trophy game during the exchange, but their mission this week was to dispatch the STAC boys.

Ashcoll enjoyed a first quarter lead 24-15 but the rest of the game was not pretty with four of their players in foul trouble. They led 49-40 at half-time and 64-52 at the end of the third quarter, but the buffer was never comfortable.

Fletcher Arnold top-scored with 33 points, with support from Josh Lowe on 15 and Quinn Ritchie on 14.

The Vantage Black Sticks Women have closed out their four test series against Spain with a 3-3 draw in Barcelona.

It was the most complete game of the series from a New Zealand perspective, showcasing some flowing hockey with the Black Sticks dominating patches of play.

Striker Kelsey Smith opened the scoring in her 50th international test, after delivering a 10th minute field goal.

Spain struck back early in the second quarter through Beatriz Perez to take the match into halftime locked up at 1-1.

The hosts snatched a 2-1 lead in the 36th minute before two quickfire goals from Jordan Grant and Pippa Hayward nosed the Kiwis back in front with one quarter left to play.

But Spain managed to find an equaliser eight minutes from fulltime to see the score finish in a stalemate.

Black Sticks assistant coach Sean Dancer said while the final result was disappointing, it was a good way to finish the series.

“It was good to see see the girls flowing well with the ball early in the game and we created enough to win the game but were unable to make more of our opportunities,” he said.

“We have learnt a lot from our series here and are now looking forward to getting to Belgium and preparing for our first game at the World League semi-final.”

The series has been part of New Zealands build-up for the FIH World League semi-final in Brussels from June 21 - July 2, which doubles as a qualifier for the 2018 Hockey World Cup. The Black Sticks open their World League tournament in a rematch against Spain on Thursday, June 22 at 6am (NZT). All New Zealand games will be broadcast live on SKY Sport.

Coulthard keen to keep kicking on after winter break The Supercars championship roars back to life this weekend after a month-long winter break and Kiwi racer Fabian Coulthard is hoping to pick up where he left off.

The Shell V-Power Ford driver leads the championship by four points and is eager to turn around a poor personal record at Hidden Valley Raceway, near Darwin.

The 34-year-old thinks he and the car are well-suited to the small track.

“It has not been the best place for me – we’ve had good speed but we just haven’t been able to

convert,” Coulthard said.

“We’ve got a quick car. I feel like we’ve been to our bogey circuits in Perth and Tasmania and I think we have something to contend with.

“We need to keep an eye on our competition – we have some quick cars in PRA and Triple Eight.”

Coulthard announced during the break he and partner Becky Lamb are expecting – with twins due later this year.

“It is going to get pretty busy in my off-season a little later on in the year,” he said with a laugh.

A frustrated Jamie Whincup is

in the championship fight after climbing to second at the previous round in Winton but the six-time Supercars champion is frustrated that he is yet to win a race in 2017.

“Part of me is grateful that I am in championship contention,” Whincup said.

“I am only 10 points off the lead. But the other part of me is very frustrated because I have not won a race yet.

“This part of the year is about going fast and winning races and that is what I am out to do.

Sitting here without wins is very frustrating.

“It is not about consolidating points for me,” he said. “It is about winning races. The fun bit is going out there and going hard. I want to win.”

Whincup and his Red Bull Holden Racing teammate Shane van Gisbergen showcased improved speed compared to the Shell V-Power Fords last time out and should be fast on the Hidden Valley circuit where they’ve tasted success in recent seasons.

At the other end of the field, this weekend marks a year since Nissan last won a race in the championship.

Retallick ready to rumble It doesn’t take a genius to work out that Brodie Retallick is more than a little eager to slip into his All Blacks jersey and make a point at Eden Park.

He, and his fellow forwards, would specifically like to make a statement about their readiness and willingness to roll up their sleeves and get on with the nasty business of beating up other similarly minded packs.

Retallick, one of the toughest and most gifted forwards in the world game, has followed the progress of the British & Irish Lions since they were named back in April, through to their arrival in New Zealand and has probably heard enough and read enough about their supposed desire to take the All Blacks on up front and challenge them at the set piece and collisions.

Such confrontation is very much his cup of tea. His mate in the second row, Sam Whitelock, is fairly keen on the combative areas of the game as well and both have a healthy appetite to scrummage, lineout jump and cleanout in the rucks.

They are eager to give a strong reminder of that against Samoa and then carry on in that vein the flowing week against the Lions.

“I guess in the back of the mind we know what is coming in the next few weeks but the game for us on Friday night is a great opportunity for us,” said Retallick.

“It is our first hit-out of 2017 and I think we have found previously we have found some work-ons in our first test. It hasn’t always worked out the way we wanted it to so it is still an All Blacks test and we know that if we get things right on Friday night that’s going to be good for us.

“It is very exciting. We have heard a lot about the Lions. We have seen a lot of games so far. It would be nice to hear people talk about what the All Blacks are doing well but time will tell.”

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen will be secretly delighted with Retallick’s state of mind and obvious desire to put down a marker against Samoa.

Hansen needs his players to be mentally connected at Eden Park against Samoa - aware that they need to turn up at the set-piece, hit hard across the field and be prepared to be patient, resilient and creative to get the job done.

“A win is getting a game of footy and getting some combinations going,” said Hansen. “The hardest thing to do and we have seen it with the Lions is that you are bringing in a group of people that come from different teams and have been playing different defensive patterns and different attack structures.

“You can’t just click your fingers and say ‘right, we are are away’. So if we can get through the game and get some connections going and get back into the All Black way, play with a bit of intensity at some space and with some accuracy ... that will be good while obviously keeping an eye on the scoreboard will be handy, too.”

Sport Henderson coming here Canadian teenage golf sensation Brooke Henderson is the second LPGA Tour top-15 star to confirm her place in the New Zealand Women’s Open this September in Auckland.

Henderson, who beat Kiwi Lydia Ko in a playoff to win the US PGA title last year, is 15th in the world rankings.

Ko will also contest the NZ Open at Windross Farm Golf Course at Ardmore from September 28, the first LPGA event to be held here.

McKayson New Zealand Open director Michael Goldstein said the announcement is great news for the tournament.

Some of the finest primary school aged rippa rugby players descended on the Ashburton Showgrounds yesterday for a chance at travelling to Wellington for the national tournament.

Mt Somers Springburn School and Methven Primary School

flew the flag for Mid Canterbury, facing off against North Otago’s Pembroke Primary School and St Joseph’s School. Representing South Canterbury were Pleasant Point Primary School and Bluestone School.

Mid Canterbury Rugby development officer, Jason Ree, said the team were playing to win an all-expenses paid trip to the na-

tional competition, held in Wellington later in the year.

“The teams are playing five matches in a round robin format, and the winner of that will then go on to the national tournament,” he said.

“It is normally held in South Canterbury as that is in the middle, but last year it was in Oamaru, so this year we got to host it.”

Melbourne Rebels coach Tony McGahan has paid the price for their worst ever Super Rugby season, with the club looking to replace him.

McGahan’s team managed one win from 15 rounds this season under the pressure of being in the Australia Rugby Union’s sights as it seeks to cut a team. While a decision is still to be made by the ARU on the Rebels’ future, McGahan won’t be a part of it.

Both parties said a decision had been made to look for a fresh start beyond the end of the current campaign.
