Silver Fern Farms’ attempt to shaft a group of seasonal workers out of redundancy may have backfired. The group of about 25 Pacific Island workers were among the 350 who lost their jobs when Silver Fern pulled the plug on its Fairton sheep meat processing operation two weeks ago. Based in their home country, the Samoan workers were employed under
the Approval in Principle (AIP) seasonal work visa scheme, to work at the Fairton plant. When the going got tough for the company last year, the workers were deployed to the company’s Belfast plant but paid from Fairton, presumably to get around the visa requirements, according to the Guardian’s source. This season those workers were employed by Silver Fern Farms Ltd, which technically doesn’t operate any meat
processing plants, but is an over-arching company to SFF Beef, SFF Lamb and SFF Venison. On this basis the company attempted to wriggle off the redundancy hook, when it came to paying out the migrant workers, our source revealed.
