A haul of almost half a tonne of methamphetamine (P) in Northland this week comes as no real surprise to those on the ground in Ashburton dealing with the fall-out caused by an increasing number of addicts. An increasing number of people are turning up at the Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service (Acads) looking for help with P addiction, whether they are addicts or family members, ser-
vice manager Chris Clark said. “It’s getting to the point now that it’s quite noticeable – especially this year – drug use is gaining traction which is not good for our community to have this amount of P about,” she said Ms Clark was quick to dispel any misconception that young people dominated statistics when it comes to drug use. “It’s not the younger people using P – it’s across the board, across every age group and every profession. The users are not those people you would normally
associate with taking drugs – we are talking about professionals in our community,” she said. “The difference with P is not only the enormous impact on people’s lives but also on families and housing contamination as we are starting to see with testing. The impact goes much further than just the addiction aspect.”
