A haul of almost half a tonne of methamphetamine (P) in Northland this week comes as no real surprise to those on the ground in Ashburton dealing with the fall-out caused by an increasing number of addicts.

An increasing number of people are turning up at the Ashburton Community Alcohol and Drug Service (Acads) looking for help with P addiction, whether they are addicts or family members, ser-

vice manager Chris Clark said.

“It’s getting to the point now that it’s quite noticeable – especially this year – drug use is gaining traction which is not good for our community to have this amount of P about,” she said Ms Clark was quick to dispel any misconception that young people dominated statistics when it comes to drug use.

“It’s not the younger people using P – it’s across the board, across every age group and every profession. The users are not those people you would normally

associate with taking drugs – we are talking about professionals in our community,” she said.

“The difference with P is not only the enormous impact on people’s lives but also on families and housing contamination as we are starting to see with testing.

The impact goes much further than just the addiction aspect.”

Family finds Jesus rocks

Jesus appears to have found a novel way to spread the good word in Mid Canterbury.

Residents are checking their mailboxes and finding gold painted rocks, with ‘you are more precious than gold, luv Jesus’ written on them.

Just where the rocks are coming from is unknown, and one recipient has dubbed the mystery ‘the blessed rock drop, Ashburton 2016’.

Laura Crampton’s 15-year-old daughter Siobhan found theirs in their letter box before school on Tuesday.

Ms Crampton found it funny she reckons she’s the last person who would accept a gift with a religious agenda – and she took to social media and posted the ‘authentic Jesus rock’ for sale, for $150.

It turned out she wasn’t alone.

“We live in a shared driveway and they were in the other mail boxes too, so I knew someone had done a rock drop,” she said.

Then, her sale post prompted comments from many others who had also received the gold rocks. The rock drop appears to have been going on for at least the past month.

One anonymous recipient said hers arrived on May 16.

“I presumed Jesus came by when I wasn’t home so left it in my mail box. I was a little disappointed I missed him as I was hoping to meet him in person,” she joked.

“But to be honest I thought it was a nice gesture of someone as it’s not as confronting as some religious groups can be.”

“I have no idea where they have come from, but someone has taken the time to paint and write on them, to brighten people’s day maybe,” recipient JoAnn Dickson said.

Like many recipients, Samara Leigh Skilling wondered if Ashburton’s New Life Church was

behind the rock drop. But according to the church, it’s not them.

Mt Hutt is one decent storm away from 90 per cent of the mountain being up and running, the ski area’s operations manager reckons.

They’ve got snow, but they need more, and staff haven’t been able to make any in recent days due to the weather being too warm, and it’s likely to stay that way for a few days, James Urquhart said.

“It’s tough for the snowmakers; they’re itching to get online and make snow, but the weather just hasn’t allowed it,” he said.

“We only really are one storm away from getting 90 per cent of the mountain open and you know what it’s like in Mid Canterbury, it can be sunshine one minute and not the next.”

The weather was Mt Hutt’s friend 10 days out from opening, after dumping a heap of fluffy white stuff on the mountain, but warm nor’west winds blew much of that snow away, meaning they opened for the season on Saturday with less snow than they’d hoped.

The people still came though, with around 1000 people turning out for day one of the 2016 season.

“We got new snow on Sunday night and Monday was one out of the bag, everyone was going nuts with 19cm of new snow,” Mr Urquhart said.

“I actually skied on Tuesday, that’s how good it was.”

Once the temperatures dropped again, snowmaking would recommence.

“It’s amazing what we can do in 24 hours if the temperature drops to allow us to make snow, we can transform the mountain,” Mr Urquhart said.

“But the next two days look lovely; the weather’s going to be beautiful unfortunately.”

Despite a forecast to the contrary, yesterday was a great day to be skiing too, although numbers were down. Forecasters reckoned the mountain would get around a centimetre of snow yesterday, but it didn’t eventuate, so the few that made it up the mountain had an amazing day.

“You see it all the time, as soon as you get a bit of weather over Canterbury, people hunker down,” Mr Urquhart said.

From an operational point of view Mr Urquhart was happy with how the season had started, with no dramas to report.

“We’ve still got another week or so until the Australian school holidays so it’s quite nice to have everything up to speed and ready to go.

“Everything has gone well, it was just a bugger that we got slammed by the nor’west last week.”

“We can certainly inform peo-

ple about the effects and what it will do to your body and brain, but at the end of the day it comes down to personal choice.”

However, those seeking help from the Ashburton outpatient service won’t end up on long waiting lists.

they might have to wait a couple of days to see someone, but not much longer,” she said.

To access residential services clients must first be assessed and referred and may wait some time before admission. Acads can refer people to Christchurch-based residential services and St Marks

in Blenheim. “Wait times depend on the particular residential service and can vary depending on the demand at the time.”

Self-referrals and referrals from family members account for the majority of Acads’ clients, although some people are referred through the courts.

Wall-to-wall art will test gallery’s capacity

Excitement is building for the Ashburton Society of Arts’ annual exhibition with around 400 pieces expected to test the capacity of the new art gallery.

It will be the second time the event has been held at the new civic gallery and society spokesperson Mandy Casey said the space was proving an attraction to a wide variety of artists.

More than 130 artists have entered the 52nd annual exhibition and receiving secretary Jen Dearborn is looking forward to seeing the 400 paintings and other pieces they will bring with them.

Entries this year have come from artists as far afield as Invercargill and Whangarei, with big numbers from Christchurch and Timaru. Entries have also come from Australia.

Mrs Casey said the exhibition had a great reputation amongst the art community and was the biggest event on the society’s calendar. It was a chance for a huge variety of artists to show their work to the people of Mid Canterbury.

“We have artists exhibiting for the first time and others who are more well known. It’s always well supported because people here know people who entered and want to see their work.”

Russell Moon and Fail have also come on board to sponsor the premier award.

nounced at a special function on opening night and tickets for the event are still available.

The exhibition will be open to the public from July 5 until July 29; most of the artwork will be for sale.

Free parking push continues

Ashburton retailers are looking at new parking technologies as part of their campaign for free parking in the central business district.

They are fighting council for an hour’s free parking in the CBD, saying they are losing customers who are fed up with the pay and display parking meters on the main street. The Ashburton District Council decided to halve the cost of parking from July 1, but

retailers say that won’t help when customers can park at other shopping precincts for free.

The retailers are speaking with other businesses and councils in regional New Zealand to compare parking systems. Councillors here made their decision after consulting councils in Timaru and Nelson, who both provide an initial free period of parking.

“They are looking at new technologies and different ways to offset the loss in revenue by provid-

ing free parking to shoppers. They will be taking their findings and report to the next council meeting,” retailers’ spokesperson Janice McKay said.

She said free parking supporters were speaking out in Ashburton by signing paper petitions and an online petition. In less than a week, a new Free Parking for Ashburton Facebook page had gained over 400 supporters and 200 had signed its Change.org online petition.

Council cut the cost of parking to 50 cents an hour, and plans to roll out more pay and display meters on side streets.

Some free parking supporters said an hour’s free parking in Nelson had revitalised the CBD there.

Free parking in Rotorua had also been a winner for its town and retailers.

Bringing burlesque exercise to Ashburton

A thigh-burning, booty-shaking, bumping and grinding fitness craze has hit Ashburton.

The craze is Burlesquercise – a burlesque-based dance and fitness class which is for ladies only - and it’s growing in popularity.

Kimberley Blakemore is the tutor; she arrived in Mid Canterbury only a month ago from Timaru, where she was introduced to burlesquercise through classes run by renowned burlesque world performer Ruby Ruin. She got hooked, and is now bringing the classes to Ashburton.

“We describe it as thighburning, booty-shaking, pelvisthrusting, bump and grind, and it targets your legs and butt, with cardio thrown in,” Miss Blakemore said.

“It’s not hard, it’s for all levels of fitness.”

It’s also for all ages; Miss Blakemore said they’ve had women well over 50 giving it a go.

“If you’re 16 or 17 though we would like parental permission, just because it is a wee bit sexy.”

There’s no dress code; you can wear your usual gym gear.

“But if you want to rock your fishnets and wee booty shorts, go for it,” Miss Blakemore said.

Burlesquercise started in New Zealand in September 2013, and is now in Christchurch, Timaru, Hamilton and Auckland, with classes starting in Nelson later this year.

“If you don’t like to go to the gym and want to keep fit, it’s a light-hearted and fun way to do it,” Miss Blakemore said.

“I knew I had to get fit, but I’d tried the gym and hated it, and because it’s ladies only and there’s no judgement you don’t feel bad.

There’s all ages and all sizes, and it’s a really encouraging environment,” she said.

Burlesquercise has started with just one class a week in Ashburton, run out of Inverted Fitness, 86 East Street. It’s on Thursdays at 5.30pm, runs for an hour, and costs $15 as a casual, or you can get a concession card.

They’ll hold workshops from time to time too, hosted by Ruby Ruin herself.

In brief Fire at RX Ashburton firefighters were called to RX Plastics after an alarm activation about 12.30pm yesterday.

Fire chief Alan Burgess said there was a small fire at the plant, but it had been put out by RX Plastics’ staff using fire extinguishers by the time firefighters arrived.

Fanciers’ society show The Ashburton Fanciers’ Society is gearing up for its annual exhibition this weekend. The exhibition will be held at the Ashburton Sports Hall and it’s one of New Zealand’s biggest shows of this type and poultry, ducks, bantams and pigeons will be on display from tomorrow, with cavies, rabbits and cats from Saturday. Judging of the birds takes place tomorrow morning and the show will open to the public from 2pm tomorrow, and from 10.30am on Saturday.

Worker injured A logging worker injured in an accident in the Rakaia Gorge on Monday is in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital. The 23-yearold was airlifted to hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, which had to winch him from the site due to a lack of landing space. The accident involved a 36-tonne bulldozer, which had been anchoring a log-loader working 200m down a steep slope, toppling.

The man was trapped for a time, sustaining serious injuries.

House prices hit another high

House prices have hit another record high in Mid Canterbury, and nationally, according to latest figures released from REINZ. The median price of a house in Mid Canterbury rose 13 per cent to $367,500, as Canterbury as a whole rose 9 per cent – one of five regions across the country to hit new record high median prices.

But at the same time, the listings situation has declined, with a drop off of 28 per cent in the

past 12 months for the Canterbury/Westland region, leaving the region with only 18 weeks supply, REINZ regional director Jim Davis said.

“Demand remains strong in the region with the flow-on effect resulting in rising prices across most of the region,” he said.

The number of days to sell remained steady, at an average of 32 days – the same as May last year – although the average number of days to sell in May over the past 10 years was 36.

Despite the drop-off in list-

ings, sale volumes are rising, up 9 per cent for the region and 12 per cent in Mid Canterbury for May 2015.

Just how fast the district’s house prices are rising was illustrated again when May was compared to April. The average price of a house in Mid Canterbury in April was $352,500, and a month later, it’s $367,500. In May last year it was $325,00.

Compared to the rest of the country, it’s below average though, with the new national average having passed the

$500,000 mark for the first time to hit a new record high. Five regions hit record high median sale prices in May 2016 – Waikato/Bay of Plenty ($419,000), Taranaki ($343,250), Wellington ($465,000), Canterbury/Westland ($435,500) and Central Otago Lakes ($707,250).

There were 9075 unconditional residential sales in May, a 14 per cent increase on May 2015 and a 6 per cent increase on April. On a seasonally-adjusted basis, the number of sales fell 5 per cent from April to May.

Toddler rescued A Timaru toddler had to be rescued after falling through the floor of his home. Fire officers were called to the Newton Road house at about 7.45am yesterday after reports a young child was stuck under the house. The toddler, believed to be aged 18 months, was freed from under the house “with relative ease”.

Plane forced to return to airport A Fiji Airways flight had to burn off fuel after suffering technical problems following take-off from Auckland Airport yesterday.

Little faces legal action

Ashburton College applauded the cultural and sporting achievements of 58 students yesterday, 12 who have succeeded on national stages.

Among the 12 to be awarded a colour (for national honours) was outstanding rower Veronica Wall, who had a stand-out performance at Maadi Cup, winning the under-16, 17 and 18 single titles. She has since been named in the New Zealand junior team and will compete as part of the quad scull in the junior worlds in the Netherlands in August.

Wall teamed up with fellow rowers Grace Wilson, Lara Biggs, Fran Connelly-White and cox Emma Jansen to win the under-18 coxed quad and they were also awarded colours, along with waterskiers George Donaldson and Hugh Donaldson, equestrian Jamie Bird and multi-sporter Matthew Clough.

Jack Bubb and Annelise Diamond were awarded colours for performing arts, as was Zoe Diedricks for orchestra. Bubb and Diamond head to Los Angeles later this year to take part in the Performing Arts World Championships.

Pora to paid $2.5 million

BY PHIL TAYLOR Teina Pora has been awarded $2,520,949.42 compensation and received a Government apology for being wrongfully convicted of rape and murder.

The entire Crown case against Mr Pora has been rejected by a retired High Court judge contracted to review the case by the Government.

Mr Pora spent 21 years in prison for the rape and murder of Susan Burdett.

Justice Minister Amy Adams made the announcement this afternoon.

Rodney Hansen, QC, said he could have found Mr Pora innocent on a higher standard than on the balance of probabilities _ the test to trigger a Government payment for a wrongful conviction.

Justice Hansen was appointed last year to review the case after the Privy Council quashed Mr Pora’s convictions and directed that he not be tried again for the 1992 crimes.

In his report, Justice Hansen said: “Indeed the state of the evidence is such that, in my view, he could have proved his innocence to an even higher level.”

Justice Hansen has concluded that convicted serial rapist Malcolm Rewa acted alone and was solely responsible for the crimes.

Rewa was convicted of sex attacks on 25 women including the rape of Ms Burdett. But two juries couldn’t agree whether he murdered her. After the second hung jury, the Solicitor-General stayed a third prosecution. Rewa will be eligible for parole in 2018.

Justice Hansen was critical of aspects of the Crown case and police procedure and of the meddling role played by some of Mr Pora’s extended family.

The case against Mr Pora relied upon his confession which the Crown said broadly conformed to the forensic evidence, showed knowledge indicating he was likely present and was supported by the evidence of other witnesses.

“That is not the view I take,” Justice Hansen said. Pora’s confession

was “a transparent concoction” which “against the odds” persuaded police that he was present.

Mr Pora had not divulged anything he could only have known by being there and made mistakes in his interview that he would not have made had he been present, Justice Hansen said.

“All the indicators are that he made it up as he went along. Lured by the prospect of a reward, lulled by the belief that the consequences for him would not be drastic and with his judgment and his thinking befuddled by FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder), Mr Pora set out to persuade the police that he was there.

“Against the odds he succeeded by using knowledge he already had, information unwittingly fed to him by his interrogators and with the help of family members who had already formed the view that he was guilty .

His account is so plainly a fabrication that it collapses under its own weight.”

Most of the “independent” evidence said to corroborate the confession came from family members who had already decided Mr Pora “did it” and the “assistance” they gave to the Crown case, including highly persuasive evidence purporting to link Mr Pora to the crime scene, had its origins in that mindset, the judge said.

Subsequent events had vindicated the judgment of detective sergeant Karl Wright St Clair “that family members conspired to incriminate Mr Pora”.

“I find the undisputed evidence leads to the irresistible inference that Malcolm Rewa acted alone and was solely responsible for the rape and murder of Ms Burdett.”

Mr Pora did not name Rewa - even when to do so would have likely resulted in his early release from prison - “because he did not know who he was”.

“He did not know who the rapist was because he was not present when Ms Burdett was raped and murdered.”

Parents to defend allegation The Bay of Plenty parents accused of causing the death of their 8-month-old baby boy will defend the allegation at a jury trial.

Shane Christopher Neil, 29, and Lacey-Marie Te Whetu, 26, faced one count each of manslaughter when they appeared in Tauranga High Court yesterday.

The trio are accused of causing the death of Isaiah Neil on November 2 last year at Taneatua.

Court documents revealed that Neil and Te Whetu are the

deceased’s parents.

The Crown has alleged Neil and Te Whetu caused the death of their son after failing to perform his or her legal duties as parents to provide the necessaries [of life] and take reasonable steps to protect him from injury.

A third defendant, Donna Catherine Parangi, 48, is similarly charged.

The Crown alleges Parangi failed in her duty as a caregiver acting in place of the child’s parents to fulfil her legal duties towards the child.

Lawyers for Neil and Te Whe-

tu asked for more time to go through the Crown disclosure before entering pleas to the charges. Justice Timothy Brewer declined the request, and entered not guilty pleas for all three defendants.

Justice Brewer also set down a two-week jury trial which will begin in the Hamilton High Court on May 15, 2017.

The defendants were further remanded on bail to next appear at a case review hearing in the High Court at Rotorua on August 17.

Call for mandatory meth testing One of the country’s leading real estate companies is calling for P-testing to become mandatory for home buyers after this week’s record-breaking police bust.

Harcourts CEO Chris Kennedy says the police seizure of 494kg of P near Kaitaia on Sunday highlights how vital drug testing is now before people buy a home.

He’s also calling on the Government to set in place standards around the methamphetamine testing industry.

“Testers and cleaners have differing viewpoints on the severity of contamination and the methods for decontamination.

“We need standards put into place to protect consumers, and the Government needs to take the lead on this.”

Although real estate agents will always make full disclosure if they know drugs have been used at a property, it is unrealistic to expect them to be aware every time.

“There aren’t necessarily any outward signs and we do not advocate that our sales consultants test properties, as this is a highly skilled area that needs to be carried out by specialists.”

It is the buyer’s responsibility to commission P testing as due diligence, Mr Kennedy says.

And long gone are the days when you could have a property looked over by a friend with building experience.

“Just as the leaky building problem has made a qualified building inspector essential when looking to buy, the P scourge should make methamphetamine testing mandatory.”

Mr Kennedy says the haul discovered by police shows how prolific the drug is in New Zealand, along with the rising number of reports of P contamination in houses.

A property where P has been used or manufactured is likely to be contaminated with dangerous chemical residue, which can cause serious health effects.

The long-term effects of the chemicals produced from cooking meth will only be known once the people exposed to them start to experience unusual health problems. However, short-term effects include asthma-like symptoms, breathing difficulties, skin rashes, eye irritations, headaches and nausea.

Netherby building work continues Ashburton Netherby School’s refurbishment project is on track to be completed by the beginning of Term 3 despite slight building delays. School principal Phil Wheeler said the toilet block has been refurbished and reconfigured to enable several break-out spaces to be made for students to be able to work with a teacher aide. There has been a small hold-up in the building but this is due to resume very soon and the renovations should still be completed by the beginning of next term, he said. The school has also had new benches in front of classrooms installed and bark for the gardens laid.

Flag change costs come in under budget

By Claire TreveTT The unsuccessful bid to change the flag came in $4 million under budget, despite adding Red Peak at the last minute costing an extra $263,000.

The Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet has released the provisional breakdown of costs of the two flag referendums, which shows it cost $21.8 million, 15 per cent less than the budgeted $25.7 million.

The fees and travel of the Flag Consideration Panel of 12 wellknown New Zealanders cost $284,000, well under the $465,000 budgeted. Panel chair, Professor John Burrows, was paid $22,000 and the report noted many panellists, especially Professor Burrows, had not charged for a significant amount of their time.

Professor Burrows was entitled to claim up to $850 a day, and the other panellists were entitled

to $640 a day. Fees ranged from $33,000 for flag historian Malcolm Mulholland to nothing for Xero boss Rod Drury, who declined any payment. Beatrice Faumina claimed $7000 and most members claimed between $11,000 and $15,000.

The roadshow meetings cost $200,000, including the cost of venue hire, catering, staff and rental vehicles. They attracted significant criticism because of the low

turnout, and because they were held too early to allow for feedback on designs for the shortlist.

The cost of the flag process was criticised throughout and 57 per cent of New Zealanders voted to retain the current flag in the final referendum in March. Forty-three per cent voted for the Kyle Lockwood design alternative.

Most of that was the cost to the Electoral Commission of running the two referendums, which cost

$13.5 million, about $2 million lower than expected. The first referendum cost $9 million and the second cost $6 million. The next largest cost was the cost of public advertising and communication about the flag change process at about $4 million.

The figures show Parliament’s decision to add Red Peak as one of the alternative flags after public pressure cost an extra $263,000.

T

ake a 17-year-old boy with the mental age of a 10-yearold, convict him for a crime he didn’t commit and lock him up.

Fast forward 21 years, reluctantly admit a mistake was made and let him out of prison.

Procrastinate for another two years before offering a paltry $2.5 million in compensation.

That is the story of Teina Pora in a nutshell and it’s an abysmal one at that.

Teina was wrongfully convicted of the rape and murder of Susan Burdett in 1994, a year after the crime. Police never produced any direct evidence he was involved and there were huge gaps and contradictions in his version of events.

As two decades ticked by a number of people, including some who were involved in the investigation and the victim’s brother, voiced their concerns but Teina was left behind bars until his lawyers successfully appealed to the Privy Council.

He was released into a world he scarcely recognised. His only child had grown up without him, he had become a grandfather; he had no career prospects.

How do you arrive at a figure for a stolen life? The figure put on the table yesterday certainly doesn’t cut it.

It takes no account of the age Teina was when he was incarnated, the life he has missed out on or the fact he was institutionalised to the point his chances of rehabilitation have been severely stymied.

Corrections Minister Amy Adams has written to Teina, “unreservedly apologising” for the wrongful conviction and the toll it has taken on his life. Acting police commissioner Glenn Dunbier followed suit, for the first time acknowledging “deficiencies” in the original investigation.

Is it enough? Ask yourself if you would willingly spend 21 years of your life in prison for $2.5 million and a token apology? But of course, Teina didn’t have that choice.

Then there is the victim and her family to consider.

While police pursued Teina, Susan Burdett’s murderer remained unpunished and presumably free to carry on a life of crime.

Lessons must be learned from this debacle.

Alligator grabs child Details have emerged of the parents’ dramatic rescue attempt to save their son after the toddler was dragged into the water by an alligator during a movie night at a popular Disney resort in Orlando.

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said more than 50 law enforcement officers and two marine units were still in search of the two-year-old, who was taken into the Seven Seas Lagoon near Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. After more than three and a half hours, the missing boy had not been found but Sheriff Demings said the search would not end until the child was found.

Citing multiple witness accounts, Sheriff Demings said the boy was playing at the edge of the lake in about 300 millimetres of water when the alligator struck.

He confirmed reports the father jumped into the lake and tried to wrestle the child from the alligators jaws but was unsucessful.

“We will continue until we have a peaceful resolution.

We’re not leaving until we recover the child.”

He said the family was vacationing from Nebraska and comprised of a mother, a father and three children.

Katherine White Popp, whose room is directly outside where the child was taken, said she overheard the mother’s screams.

“Just heard the mother grieving her baby. My heart is shattered. I’m standing outside watching them search for someone’s baby,” she wrote on Twitter.

Ms Popp, who is visiting the resort, said the search party was growing by the minute.

Several people on social media said the child was on the beach at the time watching a movie.

Florida gunman’s wife ‘could face charges’ The wife of the gunman who killed 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando could face charges in connection with the attack, according to reports.

Prosecutors have convened a grand jury to investigate Noor Salman, wife of gunman Omar Mateen, sources quoted

by Fox News and Reuters said.

She is reported to have told police she tried to talk her husband out of attacking the Pulse nightclub.

The attack in Florida was the worst mass shooting in recent US history.

Fifty-three people were wounded and six remain in a critical condition.

Prosecutors quoted by Fox News said they were seeking to charge Noor Salman as an ac-

On Tuesday, US media reported that Noor Salman had gone with Omar Mateen to buy ammunition and had also driven him to the Pulse night-

club on a previous occasion because he had wanted to survey it.

However, she said she had tried to talk her husband out of carrying out the attack, sources quoted by NBC News said.

Mateen’s father, Seddique Mateen, said that Ms Salman - his son’s second wife - had returned to the couple’s flat on Monday to pick up some clothes. He said she and the couple’s young son were still in Florida but declined to say where.

Mateen, 29, who was killed when police stormed the club, pledged allegiance to so-called Islamic State (Isis) during the attack, authorities said.

Obama attacks Trump’s Muslim ban call The Muslim ban proposed by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is “not the America we want”, President Barack Obama has said.

Treating Muslim-Americans differently will only make the country less safe by increasing division between the West and the Muslim world, he said.

On Tuesday Mr Trump extended his ban plan to people from all countries with a terror history against the US.

Former Bond girl Caterina Murino says the reason Daniel Craig turned down a $146 million offer to play Bond, was because it was too much pressure.

Murino worked with Craig on his first Bond film, Casino Royale, and says his need for perfection made the pressure too much. She told Sunday People that it is “hugely stressful” to play the part, which wasn’t helped by the amount of money involved - “and a lot of that tension was on Daniel”. “It’s not easy to go back time and time again. It can be tiring to keep trying to find new things in the same role ... It’s a very tiring movie.

And Daniel is not just an actor, he’s a human being too.”

He said the deadly Orlando nightclub shootings justified such action.

But yesterday at the US Treasury in Washington, a visibly angry Mr Obama launched his strongest assault yet on the man who is expected to be confirmed as the Republican nominee next month.

Tellingly, he avoided uttering Donald Trump’s name, but the billionaire’s demand after the Orlando massacre that he

should resign as president for refusing to use the term “radical Islam” has clearly enraged him.

The president said the US had been founded on freedom of religion and having a “religious test” would be against the US Constitution.

He also noted that recent terror attacks in the US had been carried out by people born in the US. The president also urged

the US to reinstate the ban on assault weapons.

And he dismissed Mr Trump’s suggestion that he resign because he refuses to use the word “radical Islamic terrorism”.

“If we fall into the trap of painting all Muslims with a broad brush and imply that we are at war with an entire religion, then we are doing the terrorists’ work for them,” he said.

Co-ops under microscope Ashburton’s title as New Zealand’s co-operative capital could attract a visit from researchers studying the economic contribution of Kiwi co-operatives.

Massey University and the University of Auckland are teaming up to do the study, which follows a report showing New Zealand is one of the most co-operative economies in the world.

The Ashburton District has more than 40 co-operative businesses involved in everything from furniture shops with co-operative buying groups to co-operatives where members are shareholders in the business.

Co-operative Business chief executive Craig Presland said the research will measure the current economic contribution of the country’s top 30 co-operatives and report on the key achievements and challenges facing them.

He said co-operatives’ combined annual revenue was about $43 billion, which was almost 15 per cent of New Zealand’s GDP and more than a third of all exports.

“While these statistics are significant, we need the academic rigour and independent perspective that the universities’ researchers will bring in determining the true value of co-operatives to New Zealand.”

Co-operatively funded by Fonterra, Balance Agri-Nutrients, CDC Pharmaceuticals, Co-op Money NZ, Farmlands, Farmers Mutual Group, Foodstuffs, Market Gardeners, Mitre 10, Ravensdown and Silver Fern Farms, the study will use data from the top 30 cooperatives, as well as surveys and case studies.

Massey was the first university to offer a post-graduate course in cooperative leadership and management and professor Ray Geor said it understands the important role co-operatives play in the economy.

Their team would measure the contribution of the top 30, identify strengths and issues and be a valuable tool guiding future businesses.

The study begins in August with results expected by the end of the year.

A former South Canterbury farm labourer has been given 10 months’ home detention for falsely claiming nearly $250,000 in GST refunds for a bogus business.

Ariki Hemi Cootes, who now resides in Porirua, filed 11 monthly GST returns between July, 2014, and April, 2015, for a sharemilking business that never existed. While Cootes declared no income from the business, he claimed incurred expenditure of $1.76 million for cows, farm implements and feed, and was therefore due GST refunds of $229,900.

Refunds totalling $73,800 were

paid to him, along with a further $2600 applied to child support debts he owed. However, once an investigation was initiated, all other refunds were withheld.

Inland Revenue Investigations and Advice Group Manager Patrick Goggin said Cootes’ offending was a deliberate and concerted attempt to defraud the tax system.

After the scheme was uncovered, Cootes continued to mislead Inland Revenue staff throughout their investigation, producing fabricated tax invoices and bank statements to support his claims.

“This type of offending is an affront to the majority of taxpayers who do the right thing. Cootes created a fictitious business for the sole purchase of trying to extract money from the Government’s coffers that would otherwise have gone towards schools, hospitals and other important services,” Mr Goggin said.

“Fortunately our investigators uncovered Cootes’ plan, and nipped it in the bud.”

BY JONATHAN UNDERHILL New Zealand’s current account balance turned to a surplus in the first quarter as tourism drove up the services balance and foreigners earned less from their local investments.

The current account surplus was $1.3 billion in the first quarter, from a deficit of $2.89 billion a year earlier, Statistics New Zealand said. The figures aren’t seasonally adjusted.

The goods balance turned to a surplus of $606 million from a deficit of $1.37 billion as imports fell faster than exports. The services balance was a surplus of $2.8 billion from a surplus of $847 million three months earlier, while the primary income balance, which mainly reflects investment income, was a deficit of $1.7 billion, narrower than the

$2.3 billion gap recorded in the fourth quarter of 2015.

In the year, the current account deficit was $7.5 billion, or 3 per cent of gross domestic product, from a revised deficit of $8 billion, or 3.2 per cent of GDP, in calendar 2015. Statistics New Zealand said.

The improvement was driven by an increase in the services surplus and a decrease in the primary income deficit, it said.

“An increase in spending by international visitors to New Zealand drove the increase in the services surplus in the latest year,” the government statistician said.

“Spending by international visitors increased $2.2 billion in the year ended March 2016, to reach a record annual high in spending” of $13.3 billion, it said.

There was a $1.5 billion net inflow of investment in the first

quarter as transactions of $4.3 billion increased New Zealand’s international liabilities and transactions of $2.8 billion increased the nation’s international assets.

New Zealand’s net international liability position was $157 billion, or 63.1 per cent of GDP at March 31, up from $151.9 billion, or 61.8 per cent of GDP, at Dec. 31 and the largest net liability position since March 2009. Still, as a percentage of GDP, it was higher at March 31 last year at 63.5 per cent.

The nation’s net external debt position rose to $139.3 billion, or 56 per cent of GDP as at March 31, up from $136.5 billion, or 55.5 per cent of GDP three months earlier, the first increase since the fourth quarter of 2012.

■ CHEVROLET IMPALA

Impala a family heirloom I

t could be said this story has its origins during a hot summer day on a Ruapuna farm about 25 years ago.

Most of us can recall memorable days.

That was one.

I was there helping bale straw for Maarten and Betty Stolp.

Renowned for their wonderful hospitality, the Stolps gave us afternoon tea.

And it was nice!

Now let’s fast forward to a notso-hot, in fact rather wet, summer’s day in January this year.

Roger Hart and I were on the Vintage Car Club’s annual rally which took a lunch break in the Ruapuna Hall, right across the road from the farm where I’d been all those years ago.

It brought back a swag of memories, which I mentioned to Roger.

About two weeks later I met a couple in town and following introductions was intrigued to find I had just met Maarten junior and his wife Zaidee Stolp.

I said that only recently while at Ruapuna I had mentioned his family name and the kindness of his father and late mother.

Maarten junior asked if we had seen his dad’s car, a 1967 Chevrolet Impala, that day all those years ago.

We hadn’t.

Maarten went on to say the family still have the car and I asked if I could see it sometime.

He said “you can have a look right now if you like, it’s parked outside”.

Maarten and Zaidee had used the Chevrolet to tow a trailer into town.

While not necessarily an everyday car, the Chevrolet is no show pony either.

It gets driven quite often.

A different situation than when it was new.

The first owner was a Chinese businessman who lived in Singapore.

He had a chauffeur and may never have driven the Chevrolet.

Then a New Zealand Air Force officer based in Singapore bought the car.

He had the car shipped to New Zealand when he returned home to Ohakea.

hicles the Air Force officer didn’t drive the car a lot, usually only using it at weekends.

After taking up another overseas posting, the Air Force officer decided to sell the Chevrolet and Maarten senior bought it in late 1973 with 36,860 miles on the clock.

His previous car was also a Chevrolet; prior to that he owned various cars including a Hudson and a straight eight Buick.

Maarten says the car was ideal, he and Betty along with one of their children could sit on the front bench seat and there was plenty of room for the other four children in the back.

The younger Maarten and in fact his whole family have very fond memories of many happy trips in the car; special occasions have included several family weddings.

Being a pillar-less four-door sports saloon the Stolps’ Impala is unusual.

It has a six-cylinder 250 cubic inch motor and a two-speed Power-glide automatic gearbox.

The car still performs very well and provides passengers with a comfortable ride.

Keen to preserve the Chevrolet, the Stolps had the car repainted and re-upholstered and have attended to necessary mechanical

work, but they have always been mindful of keeping its appearance original.

Almost 43 years on, is Maarten senior glad he bought the Chevrolet Impala?

Answer: Yes. What about Maarten junior?

Absolutely so, he says he’s glad the car is still in the family and he’s happy to be the current custodian of it.

But how did a family now living in Mid Canterbury ended up buying a car at Ohakea?

Just as this story has its origins many years ago the answer to that question has origins which go back a long way.

Like many of their countrymen Maarten and Betty Stolp coped with the difficulties of living in their native Holland while it was occupied during World War Two. Conditions post war weren’t easy either, so like many other Dutch people Maarten and Betty made a very brave decision to make a new start in a new country.

They chose New Zealand, initially settling in Manawatu, near

the Ohakea Air Base.

Their five children were all born in New Zealand.

In time the Stolps developed a poultry farm and it was during this time they bought the Chevrolet, encouraged to do so by Maarten junior.

They became sharemilkers before moving to the Coromandel where they had a dairy farm.

In 1985 the opportunity arose to sell their farm and buy a larger property at Carew, where they built a milking shed and developed a herd.

Martin junior and his family lived there while his parents resided nearby at Ruapuna.

The man who spent all his early life in Holland certainly had a vision, but probably never fully imagined the wonderful life he and Betty would make for themselves and their family in New Zealand, which has involved, among other things, owning a rather special American car.

As far as keeping the Chevrolet Impala all these years, Maarten with his delightful grin says “there are worse things a man could do!”

The race distance covered by the winning Porsche 919 Hybrid in 2015 was 5382.82km (395 laps, average speed 224.2km/h).

During the journey, the gearbox experienced 25,293 shifts (up and downshifting).

The highest top speed with a 919 in the 2015 race was done by Mark Webber – 340.2km/h.

It was also Webber who lost the most body weight of all six drivers. At the beginning of the race he tipped the scales at 81.2kg. After his final stint his weight was 78.2kg.

For the slowest part, Arnage, the drivers decelerate to around 70km/h.

2016 will see 60 cars on the grid – as many as back in the 1950s.

In normal racing mode (without any safety car periods), the Porsche 919 Hybrid must refuel every 14 laps.

In 2015 each 919 Hybrid was refuelled 30 times.

Drivers are normally only changed when new tyres are needed.

During the race, each driver must get behind the wheel for a minimum of six hours in total. No driver may drive for more than four hours within a six-hour period. No driver may drive for more than 14 of the 24 hours.

ublic expectations are high ahead of the 84th running of the Le Mans 24-Hours on June 18/19.

Porsche enters the world’s hardest race with the 919 Hybrid as a record holder, title defender and leader in both the manufacturers’ and drivers’ world championships.

Le Mans is also the third round of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).

Ahead of the season’s highlight, the trio of Romain Dumas (FR), Neel Jani (CH) and Marc Lieb (DE) leads the drivers’ standings.

The reigning world champions in the sister car, Timo Bernhard (DE), Brendon Hartley (NZ) and Mark Webber (AU), have been unlucky in the first two rounds (accident in Silverstone, puncture in Spa-Francorchamps) and can’t wait to catch up.

For Porsche it is the third entry in Le Mans after returning to top level motorsport.

In 2015, at only the second try, Porsche managed a one-two result.

The 919, with its ground-breaking downsizing two-litre V4 turbocharged petrol engine and its two energy recovery systems (brake and exhaust energy), has been significantly developed. It produces a system power of 662kW (900hp).

On the long straights the 919 frequently reaches top speeds above 320km/h.

The six works drivers have between them participated in the Le Mans race a total of 49 times.

The Porsche line-up includes Kiwi driver Brendon Hartley (second from left).

Bernhard/Hartley/Webber finished second last year and now drive the futuristic prototype with the number 1.

Dumas/Jani/Lieb came fifth in 2015 and share the number 2 Porsche 919 Hybrid.

Kiwi driver Brendon Hartley said: “When I drove in Le Mans for the first time in 2012, I immediately fell in love with this race.

“The first night racing experience is something I will never forget.

“This tunnel vision and warp speed type feeling – I loved this sensation.

“Plus the circuit itself, with its unique features such as crowns in the roads and massive straight-line speeds.

“There is so much passion for this endurance race. You really feel that you’re part of the history, in which Porsche plays a big role.

“Entering Le Mans with this brand is a dream.”

■ STIRLING MOSS

Motoring memories revived O ur recent story about Sir Stirling Moss and in particular his great act of sportsmanship brought back pleasant memories for Maree Hunt, one of our readers.

Encouraged by their late father Merv, Maree’s family have always been motoring enthusiasts.

Maree says her dad who was a brilliant mechanic and sometimes raced cars had quite a collection of vehicles which included some rather special cars.

Maree says her dad often recalled the

time he met a then very young Stirling Moss at the Ardmore track in the late ’50s or early ’60s.

Merv Hunt described Stirling Moss as a very pleasant and talented young gentleman with a great sense of fair play which of course was borne out by the gallant act of sportsmanship which saw him forfeit his chance of being World Champion.

A long-time fan of Sir Stirling Moss, Maree is glad he is still remembered for both his skill and his many achievements both on and off the track.

Deep dish chicken rashers and mushroom pizza 2 1/2 C scone mix (homemade or packet mix suitable) 1/2 C grated parmesan 1/4 t ground chilli powder 300g Tegel Smoked Chicken Rashers 1 red pepper, deseeded and sliced 250g Swiss brown mushrooms, wiped and sliced 8 halves semi-sundried tomatoes, chopped 2T fresh snipped chives 1C grated mozzarella ■ In a bowl, combine scone mix with parmesan and chilli powder, mix well. Add 1C cold water and stir with a knife to form a soft dough.

■ Knead lightly and use to press into the base and 3cm up the sides of a greased 25cm spring form tin.

■ Cut the Tegel Smoked Chicken Rasher rashers into 1.5cm strips.

■ Heat a large frying pan with a dash of olive oil and quickly stir-fry the chicken rashers, red pepper and mushrooms for 2-3 minutes.

■ Remove from heat, add semi -dried tomatoes and season with pepper.

■ Spoon half the chicken rasher mixture on to the pizza, scatter

with 1T chives and 1/2 C mozzarella, repeat with the remaining ingredients.

■ Cook at 220°C for 18-20 minutes or until golden and cooked through.

■ Cut into wedges to serve with a crisp green salad.

Sooty saw off Hoppy in a great game and now faces Gaby who had a cake walk over a seriously over rated pommie.

Think Gaby will go through again but in a much tighter game. Spud out-muscled Pauly, and Lefty pipped Ken on the 20th, this should be a great game with Greig just making his shots count and sneaking home.

Don beat Brendy on the 19th and will now face Chris Ralston who ran roughshod over Knocker, think Don will pip another tight one.

Then finally, Tuffy out-lasted Muri and Brayden gave George a right royal hiding, this game will depend on how many shots Brayden loses this week, but I believe he could be a dark horse for the whole trophy.

In the plate Hoppy and Paul should ease past Paddy and Ken, then Brendy and Muri will put Neil and George to bed, leaving us some wonderful semifinals for next week. Good golfing

Ashburton Musical Club The meeting of the Ashburton Musical Club on Sunday, June 12 featured a variety of music.

The Phoenix Ensemble of Willow Diedricks, Emily Dodd, Paula Green, Elise Ford, Violins; Stella Fleming, Viola; Zoe Diedricks, Cello; Lucy Clough, Double Bass and Amy Pearson, piano/percussion performed a Suite of Four Celtic Pieces.

This was a rousing and emotive item where each musician had an opportunity to showcase their talent. Lucy Clough sang Fear No More the Heat o’ the Sun by Roger Quilter and Allerseelen by Richard Strauss.

The Phoenix Strings with Willow Diedricks, Paula Green, Elsie Ford and Zoe Diedricks played the three Movements of Suite and Light.

On the piano Sam Kuipers played Invention No 1 by J S Bach and Tiffany Yang Sonatina in G by Beethoven. Samantha McArthur sang Standchem by Brahms and As long as He Needs Me (Nancy’s song) by Lionel Bart.

Eliana Vinculado played on the piano Waltz No 1 of Five Waltzes by Benjamin Britten. Liam Scott played two items on the guitar; Bouree and Romanza by J S Bach. Lacey Cairns on the piano played Rondo from Sonatina in F by Diabelli and Washtub Rag by Chapple.

Two vocal items were performed by Adrienne Ayers; Turn Ye To Me by Evelyn Sharpe and The Lark in the Clear Air arranged by Henry Geehl.

Piano solos played by Shayna Cairns were Sonatina in D by Scarlatti followed by Chopin’s Prelude in Ab major played by Jessica Dunlop. Joshua Pike’s vocals were My Lagan Love by Hamilton Harry and Steal Away by H T Burleigh.

The afternoon concluded with Laura

Cavendish Club Arts & Craft Circle On Friday Arts & Crafts were very lucky to have Aileen Brake, who is a member of our circle, bring along some of her beautiful pottery which she has made over her thirty two years of potting.

She told us about the different kinds of clay used for different articles made, the use of the kiln for baking the pots and interesting glazes used to change the look of the pottery. It was most interesting. Aileen was thanked and presented with a gift.

Travel Club Our President Judy Kingsbury welcomed us to the afternoon arranged by the Travel Club and introduced our speaker Janet King.

Changing circumstances took Janet and her husband to Australia where their daughter lives and after converting a van to a camper spent many months touring. Needing a break an advertisement re work on an Outback Station resulted in a six-month contract on a Queensland property approximately 70,000 acres and 4000 cattle nine hours from Brisbane.

The long and rocky track in opened to an expanse of green surrounded by distant hills, trees and a billabong. Their accommodation was self-contained with electricity on from 6am to 10pm.

Feeding stud bulls, milking the house cow, covering ripped motorbike and ute seats, building fences and when the owners and houseboy were away for two weeks feeding their two sons and three jackaroos, washing jeans, doing flower and vegetable gardens and on wet days mending jeans.

The work was done between 2pm to 3pm because of the heat.

With horses, snakes, insects, flies and amazing bird life it was a great experience.

On May 6 we had the privilege of being taken along on a journey to hear about Nigel Dean’s life so far.

Nigel was born in England to parents, from fascinating ethnic backgrounds and came to live in New Zealand in 1951. Their lives in New Zealand began in Christchurch, where Nigel attended school and started his working life with an after-school job, with the Christchurch Star Office.

After many twist and turns in their lives, Nigel began Pharmacy School, was drafted for Compulsory Military Training and along the way met Christine, a nurse, whom he married and together they had four children now in various parts of the world and who are having amazing and interesting careers as well.

Nigel has been the local Ashburton Hospital Pharmacist for the past 36 years. A truly amazing journey, that I cannot do justice to in this report.

Thank you Nigel for sharing your very

interesting life so far.

Coronation Target Shooting Club Wow! How the weeks have flown since the last report. The highlight of the past few weeks would have to be the completion of the Ashburton College Year 12 PE shooting module.

This exercise involved four classes totalling 93 students and required the assistance of 12 club members over the entire course of 32 hours. 890 targets were completed with the expenditure of over 13,000 rounds of ammunition.

The students were instructed in firearm safety and were coached in the sport to the three levels of achievement. Our club members were especially appreciative of the friendliness, co-operation and the achievement of the students.

A record number achieved excellence and there are some who have attended the club regularly since in an effort to reach the top level.

In this short period of time a number of club members have got to put their hands in the Club Captain’s personal best jar Savanna McArthur 100.4, Emma Smith 97.3, Morgan Smith 93.1, Sam Smith 81 and Michaela Smith rounded out the family assault with 97.5 Heather Ross 94.3.

The Captain’s ladder has also attracted a lot of attention and been the source of a great deal of fun. The rules are “flexible” and decided on a night to night basis by the Captain or her designated stand in, handicaps apply and a recent variation to the rules aided Emma Smith in her quest to reach the top where she has remained for two weeks.

Emma figured in the last “winner, winner, chicken dinner” training game where she reached the final to shoot off with Sandy Bennett.

While Sandy actually won the shoot off she, generously passed the prize to Emma in recognition of a supreme effort.

Mid Canterbury Ladies Probus Club Acting President Val Farr opened the recent meeting of the Mid Canterbury Ladies Probus Club. After the National Anthem was sung, four visitors were welcomed to the meeting, and members stood as a mark of respect on the recent passing of member, Barbara Smith.

Birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated, and two new members, Jean and Carolyn were inducted into the Club. There was a report on a recent local area meeting, it is proposed to get together more often with other Probus Club members.

Parker to fight Joshua in ‘English spring’ Joseph Parker could fight his mandatory IBF world title challenge against current holder Anthony Joshua in London as early as March next year.

The New Zealand heavyweight, in his second week of training for his July 21 fight against Australian Solomon Haumono in Christchurch, was slated to meet Joshua between November 19 and January 19, according to IBF regulations.

However, several factors can delay his challenge, including the possibility of Joshua - who fights American Dominic Breazeale in London next weekend in a title defence - having a unification bout against either WBC title holder Deontay Wilder or fellow Englishman Tyson Fury, the WBO and WBA champion.

In an interview with The Ring magazine, Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn said a fight with Parker, 24, was likely to happen in the “spring”, which would be between March and May. “Parker is due to get a call on November 19 and it’s possible that we have to take that one next spring.

That’s a really good fight between two young heavyweights and it would be exciting,” Hearn said.

Parker, who earned his No1 challenger spot with a hard-fought 12-round victory over Carlos Takam in Manukau, has returned to his Las Vegas base after a break and is about to resume sparring.

Trainer Kevin Barry said Parker’s elbow soreness would be carefully managed during this time because it was during sparring when the problems generally arose. After the Takam fight, Parker revealed his body “broke down” during the tough 12-week camp, and said the pain in his left arm robbed it of some of its venom and added to his defensive issues.

An Art Deco walking tour was one of the features here, as well as a Mission Bay Winery lunch. Many other places were visited, including the Manawatu Gorge, Palmerston North, Whanganui and New Plymouth.

After morning tea the main speaker was Jane Hooper who told of her trip to Nepal. Kathmandu was a magnificent noisy city, with chaotic traffic and lots of temples. They were there before the earthquake, and Jane believes it now looks rather different.

Lukla Airport had a small runway. The interesting toilets were described.

Then the highlight, in a party of six people with two guides they trekked to base camp of Mount Everest.

They visited the Museum for climbers, and then on to the monastery.

Edmund Hillary Memorial was viewed.

Another highlight was the delicious food at the bakery.

There had been problems with litter in Nepal but this was being addressed.

Jean Aiken thanked Jane on behalf of the members.

The Warriors are hoping to continue their rise in form but remain wary of the struggling Sydney Roosters ahead of Sunday’s NRL clash at Mt Smart Stadium.

After an inconsistent season start, the Warriors have hit a purple patch over the past fortnight, with big wins over Brisbane and Newcastle propelling them up into ninth spot on the NRL ladder.

Savea out; Dagg called back in Torn over crowd’s reaction

By Patrick Mckendry Julian Savea has been left out of the All Blacks for the second test against Wales at Westpac Stadium, with coach Steve Hansen recalling fullback Israel Dagg to the starting line-up and moving Ben Smith to the right wing.

Waisake Naholo, who had a rollercoaster of a test at Eden Park last Saturday, will start in the No 11 jersey as the All Blacks look to tie up a series which is rapidly going sour for Wales after their humiliation at the hands of a secondstring Chiefs in Hamilton on Tuesday.

It is a deserved recall for Dagg, outstanding for the Crusaders after a late start to the season due to a shoulder injury. Left out of the World Cup squad, he credits his renaissance to a new-found love of the game, and his skill under the high ball is likely to be a big part of Hansen’s reasoning behind his selection.

Significantly, it will be the 28-year-old’s 50th test cap. His last test was in July last year _ the victory over the Springboks in Johannesburg.

Attention, however, will probably focus on where this leaves Savea, who has had issues with his form and weight for the Hurricanes this year, and was replaced

by Beauden Barrett after only 43 minutes at Eden Park last weekend after missing several first-half tackles.

Hansen left Savea out of the Samoa test and first two games of the Rugby Championship last year following the Hurricanes’ run to the Super Rugby final because of a lack of fitness, a constant work-on for a player who tips the scales at 110kg.

The powerful 25-year-old, who has scored 39 tries from 42 tests, including a five-pointer last weekend, has generally responded well from being left out and Hansen will back him to do so again.

He burst on to the scene in 2012 by scoring a hat-trick of tries against Ireland at Eden Park, had a quiet game in the next test in Christchurch where the All Blacks scraped home 22-19, and was left out of the third test in Hamilton where the All Blacks ran up 60 points.

Despite his incredible strikerate of tries per tests – including three in the quarter-final thrashing of France at last year’s World Cup in Cardiff, Savea, one of the most damaging wings in world rugby, has always needed careful managing.

It will be a balancing act, how-

ever, because if the back three play well at the Cake Tin, it would be difficult to separate them for the third test under the roof in Dunedin, the home of Highlanders Ben Smith and Naholo.

The only other change to the team is the return from a hamstring strain of Sam Whitelock, who replaces Luke Romano as a starting lock alongside Brodie Retallick.

The reserves bench has been kept as is, which means Romano drops out of the match-day squad completely. There were hints by the coaching staff that back-up halfback Tawera Kerr-Barlow might have been close to a return from a hand injury, but Hurricane TJ Perenara retains his spot on his home territory.

The legend grows. World Cup winner Stephen Donald got a hero’s reception at Waikato Stadium, as he inspired the below-strength Chiefs to smash the Welsh rugby side.

But the crowd’s reaction left him torn: on one hand he wanted to acknowledge the love, on the other he felt compelled not to.

The veteran back, who departed before fulltime battered and bruised, told Martin Devlin on RadioSport’s The DRS Show: “I was highly embarrassed by it all. I’m just one small cog in the wheel. At the same time I was humbled and grateful to the great people of Waikato for the reception I got.

“And I didn’t want to (be) the fool who hot dogged it and then we lost .. so keep the hands in the pockets and trudge off.”

Donald praised his young forward pack, and said while training sessions may have lacked accuracy, the team was bursting with enthusiasm.

“We are not kidding ourselves.

This means nothing towards a Super title but it was a great occasion which we will cherish forever,” he said.

College cycling team grabs top rankings Ashburton College’s cycling team came home from the Aoraki Secondary Schools’ Cycling Champs this week with a fistful of top rankings.

Isabella Roulston won the under-16 girls’ individual time trial and scratch race, while Jess Banks won the over-16 individual time trial

and the scratch race.

For the boys, Abe O’Donnell won the individual time trial and was third in the scratch race, while big brother Bailey was first in the over-16 individual time trial and second in the scratch race.

The four also featured in the teams event.

Roulston, Banks and Connie Davidson teamed up to win the over-16 girls’ event, while the O’Donnells and Matt Clough were second in the boys’ over-16 team race.

The Ashcoll team will now be preparing for the South Island Secondary Schools’ champs to be held at Ruapuna on July 9 and 10.

Iceland in shock draw A goal from Birkir Bjarnason earned Iceland a shock 1-1 draw with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal on Tuesday at the European Championship, the tiny Scandinavian nation’s first ever match at a major tournament.

Iceland, which managed only four shots to Portugal’s 25, was second best most of the Group F game and trailed to a first half strike by Nani. But its players showed resilience throughout, and took advantage of Portugal’s profligacy in front of goal.

Bjarnason slotted home the equalizer in the 50th minute with a curled volley at the far post against the run of the play, moments after Ronaldo missed a chance to make it 2-0 when he shot wide.

“We should have scored more goals, there is no secret about that,” Portugal coach Fernando Santos said. “We are to blame for that. Then there was this move. We knew they could play long balls and that they had good crossers.

They were very pragmatic.”

With a population of 330,000, Iceland is the smallest nation ever to play at a European Championship. It defied the odds to reach the tournament by finishing second in its qualifying group behind the Czech Republic and above Turkey and the Netherlands, defeating the Dutch twice.

Nani put Portugal in front with a clinical finish from close range on a day when Ronaldo equalled Luis Figo’s Portugal record of 127 caps – but lacked his usual composure and accuracy.

After a tight start, Portugal won the midfield battle and Nani turned Portugal’s dominance of possession into a goal when he collected a cross from the right by Andre Gomes and steered the ball home at the near post in the 31st minute.

Playing high up the pitch, Portugal applied the pressure with plenty of movement off the ball

and quick passing, forcing Iceland’s midfielders to keep chasing the ball.

The pressure continued immediately after the break, when Ronaldo failed to take advantage of a ball that dropped to his feet, shooting wide while unmarked from the edge of the box.

Soon after that, Portugal was made to pay for Ronaldo’s misses.

On one of Iceland’s few scoring chances, Portugal defender Vieirinha lost track of Bjarnason at the far post and the winger volleyed home a cross from Johann Gudmundsson. The equaliser soon lifted Iceland’s morale and briefly unsettled Portugal.

Ronaldo tried to break the stalemate, leaving Ragnar Sigurdsson on the ground with a succession of his quick dribbles in the 68th minute. But the defender still managed to take the ball away from the Real Madrid forward’s feet with a brilliant tackle.

Portugal continued to push forward in search of a winner.

But Nani’s glanced header from a free kick flew wide, Ricardo Quaresma’s deflected shot 12 minutes from time was parried away by Halldorsson and the luckless Ronaldo had a series of free kicks blocked by the Iceland wall.

NRL to offload Knights The NRL has taken another step towards the sale of the Newcastle Knights, forming a committee to make a recommendation on the transition of ownership at the club.

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg, Knights chairman Brian McGuigan and former league boss John Quayle will hold seats on the seven-person committee, as will the game’s current head of club and state services Tony Crawford.

There still remains no timeframe for the sale of the club, however Crawford says the current financial, operational and governance structures now in place allowed them to start considering the best method for an ownership transition.

Adams joins All Blacks Steven Adams joined the All Blacks in Wellington for a session on the basketball court yesterday.

All Blacks players including Sam Whitelock, Elliot Dixon, Joe Moody, Nathan Harris and Tom Franklin joined the Kiwi NBA star for a shootout on the court. Adams is taking a break in New Zealand after the US basketball season, which saw the Oklahoma City Thunder go head-to-head against the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference semi-finals.

Over the weekend Adams was spotted in Rotorua – supporting his younger sister at a local netball match. Netball Rotorua executive member Charleen Hicks, said everyone at the courts knew who he was and people young and old were lining up for his photograph.

Classic gains popularity Real estate and mortgage entrepreneur Mike Pero faces a busy weekend in Timaru later this year.

As well as putting his name to the Mike Pero Southern Classic taking place over the weekend of December 2-4 at Levels Raceway, he will also be promoting and competing in the event.

The Classic Action Motorcycle Sports-organised meeting is shaping up to be the largest classic race meeting of its kind in the South Island.

The definition of classic includes motorcycles from the 1920s era through to the mid90s, and a variety of these machines will be racing.

Classic and post-classic racing is one of the fastest-growing sectors in world motorcycling as retired racers dust off longstored machines and renew battles with former rivals.

CAMS club president Dave Reesby has already fielded inquiries from Australia and has been in talks with some wellknown former international riders.

“Beyond Australia, there will also be Irish, American and British riders attending,” Reesby says.

“We believe there could be more than 250 bikes from across

Cricket’s DRS system has taken a beating following an extraordinary failure of the Hawk-Eye technology during Australia’s win over South Africa on Sunday. Video footage reveals an almighty failure from the Hawk-Eye ball-tracking pathpredictor. South African star AB de Villiers was clean bowled by Aussie quick Josh Hazlewood but the Hawk-Eye ball-tracker predicted a different result. It predicted Hazlewood’s jaffer would have jumped up too high and sailed over the stumps. It’s particularly damning footage for Hawk-Eye, considering video replays clearly show de Villiers did not get any bat on the ball or impact the flight of the Duke.

Snag hits Olympics Preparations for the 2020 Olympics were set back again when the governor of Tokyo submitted his resignation yesterday, ending a weeks-long bid to stay in power. Yoichi Masuzoe had come under intense questioning in the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly for allegedly using political funds for personal purposes.

Japanese media reported that the resignation would take effect June 21. Masuzoe had been scheduled to attend the Rio Olympics opening ceremony in August, and would have accepted the Olympic flag during a handover at the closing ceremony.

Sport Ford wary of centres England five-eighth George Ford says Australia’s first test centres combination was “really dangerous” but the visitors are ready for whatever comes from Michael Cheika when he names his team.

Double wins for Ashcoll Ashburton College senior boys’ and girls’ basketball teams both notched up wins in their secondary school competitions on Tuesday night.

The girls took down St Margaret’s College 66-43 then the boys despatched Rangiora 71-57.

Ashburton are now five wins and two losses from their seven outings.

by Canterbury Wildcats American import Ashley Gayle, started with purpose, pressuring the Ashcoll guards in the back court.

Liberty Ross and Dani McArthur managed the extra attention, distributing the ball well to forwards Summer Anderson and Hannah Roulston.

By the end of the half Ashcoll held a 34-23 lead.

Ross and Grace Adams sparked a third quarter lift in defensive intensity, forcing St Margaret’s into a number of turnovers. The result was a 23 point third quarter scoring blitz with Ashcoll taking the game 66-43 at the final whistle.

Summer Anderson recorded her first double-double of the season with 16 points, 10 rebounds (6D, 4O), and 6 blocks.

Liberty Ross led the way for Ashcoll with 21 points, 8 rebounds (3D, 5O) and 8 steals.

With regular starter Ashlee Strawbridge away competing for the New Zealand U16 A team, coach Andrew Shepherd was happy with how his team adjusted and stepped up.

While competition organisers called the win an upset, it wasn’t for coach Pip Johnston, who said his young team bought their intensity from training the night before to the game.

He said his young players had plenty of ability and but needed to work on their self-belief. “We are definitely good enough to be winning these games.”

Next week will see Ashburton College girls and boys play a double header against Burnside High School in what will double as the schools’ annual winter exchange.

Complacency won’t be an issue for Queensland after a gut wrenching NRL loss to Paul Gallen’s Cronulla fired up the Maroons’ Cowboys stars ahead of next week’s State of Origin game two. And the North Queensland contingent may yet grow after Cowboys winger Kyle Feldt was added to the squad as cover for Newcastle’s Dane Gagai and backrower Ethan Lowe was named 18th man. North Queensland prop Matt Scott must step up in Origin II in the injured Nate Myles’ absence.

Wallabies winger out Wallabies winger Henry Speight won’t be adding a Rio de Janeiro Olympics sevens appearance to his rugby resume after being ruled out of the Australian team because of a ligament injury to his right knee.

The Australian Rugby Union said the Fiji-born Speight sustained the injury in a match between the Australian sevens side and a development team.

He is expected to be sidelined for up to 12 weeks. The Olympic tournament in Rio runs from August 6-11.
