Jail for repeat driving offender Samuel David McKenzie’s day didn’t start well or end well yesterday.

McKenzie, 25, failed to show up for an appointment in the Ashburton District Court for sentencing on his eighth count of driving while disqualified. A warrant was issued for his arrest.

When he did show up after the morning session had ended, he was arrested and held in the cells until court resumed.

Brothel offers sex for free to protest An Austrian brothel is offering a summer special that competitors will find hard to match — free sex. Its owner says it’s his way of protesting a tax squeeze. “Effective immediately: Free Entrance! Free Drinks! Free Sex!” the Pascha bordello writes on its website. Owner Hermann Mueller is quoted as as saying he will pay the women working for him to make up for the money they would normally get from clients. Prostitution in Austria is legal and regulated. Mueller, who runs other brothels in Germany and Austria, says he is pushing back against what he says is unfair taxation of nearly 4 million euros (nearly $NZ6.5 million) in the past decade.

The Ministry for Primary Industries is on the hunt for name suggestions for two new biosecurity beagle puppies who will soon be patrolling New Zealand’s borders. There’s just one catch – the names have to begin with “F”. Six puppies were born into the “F litter” in May, the latest bunch of beagles produced under the MPI detector dog breeding programme that has produced more than 30 litters in two decades. The puppies will soon head to foster homes to prepare for training and will return to MPI service in May 2016. MPI detection technology manager Brett Hickman said the breed was ideal for the day job. “Our MPI-bred beagles have proven themselves as excellent biosecurity detector dogs. They are ideally suited to working at airports and ports to sniff out food, plants other items that could pose biosecurity risk to New Zealand.”

Klum to buy an island?

German supermodel-turned-reality TV personality Heidi Klum has reportedly set her sights on purchasing her own private island off the coast of Connecticut. The Project Runway star is based in Los Angeles with her four children, but she is said to have expressed an interest in Tavern Island, a $10.99 million piece of land which boasts views of the New York City skyline, according to the New York Post.

The three-and-a-half acre island features a six-bedroom Tudor mansion, dating back to 1900, a guest house, a boat house and a pool, in addition to a private beach.

Ministry pleads not guilty John Weekes The Ministry of Social Development pleaded not guilty yesterday to charges over the deadly Ashburton Work and Income shootings.

The charges were brought

by WorkSafe New Zealand in March after an investigation into the shootings last September, in which two workers died.

The charge under section six of the Health and Safety in Employment Act alleges the ministry failed to take all practicable steps to ensure the safety of its employees while at work.

Work and Income (Winz) is a service delivery arm of the ministry.

Russell John Tully, 48, has been charged with murdering

Work and Income front-counter workers Peggy Turuhira Noble, 67, and Susan Leigh Cleveland, 55, on September 1 last year.

He is also accused of attempting to murder two other staff members - Lindy Louise Curtis, 43, who was shot in the leg and badly injured, and Kim Elizabeth Adams.

The Ministry of Social Development entered a plea of not guilty to the breach in Wellington District Court yesterday morning.

A case review hearing will be held in Wellington on August 6 at 10am.

Wellington District Court heard the hearing could take up to two weeks.

It might be just five weeks old but already Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre has broken every one of its attendance targets.

Membership and concession card sales are going through the roof, playing court times are keenly sought, demand has forced additional fitness classes to be scheduled and the number of casual users just keeps growing, said complex manager Steve Prescott.

Four weeks in, membership totalled 717 with 775 concession cards entered.

Pool user numbers through the stadium’s electronic gates totalled 23,264, but the actual number would be higher because the electronic gate malfunctioned for a period, Mr Prescott said.

His big task now is to work with schools to ensure the pool time needs of each can be met.

Some of that means re-educating those schools to understand that learn-to-swim classes are as valuable in terms three and four as they are in the traditional slots of terms four and one, he said.

“Schools are still getting their heads around what we’ve got here and we’re starting to

Ms Barrell said McKenzie had lost his job and a long-term relationship, and in her opinion was depressed. She asked Judge Couch to include a supervision clause in the post release conditions attached to the sentence to ensure he received help.

McKenzie has had seven convictions for disqualified driving since 2007, including three last year. He has already served time in prison, and has had two stints on home detention.

Judge Couch said there was a mistaken belief among some members of the community that driving while disqualified was not a serious crime. They claimed no one was hurt. But disqualification was the main way of dealing with other driving matters which are dangerous, he said.

He declined McKenzie leave to apply for home detention and disqualified him from driving for 15 months, from September this year, when his current term of disqualification expires.

“In the old pool this didn’t happen but now we’ve made a commitment that there would be two lanes available for them

“It’s about people being able to come in and enjoy the facility,” Mr Prescott said.

Ashburton College would inevitably have the greatest number of students using the pools and discussions were under way so their needs could be matched with the pool times available, he said.

“They are aware we will not

be closing the whole pool to them, but they’ll have at least six lanes, the same as they had in the old pool and they can take those lanes from 9am–3pm and through the lunch hour uninterrupted if they want.”

Group fitness classes have been bursting at the seams and seven new classes have been added on the back of user demand.

Mr Haines said Mr McCready had not read with care previous rulings from the tribunal related to the case he was trying to bring and it showed he was “wasting the tribunal’s time with applications of no merit.”

Up to 280 hunters from throughout the South Island are expected to converge on Ashburton this weekend for the annual Mid Canterbury Hunting Competition. From midnight Thursday, hunters will be scouring the South Island’s hills for prey.

They’ll be hoping to shoot the largest animal across a range of categories and will anxiously watch the scales during weigh in from 11am – 2.30pm on Sunday.

As they’re weighed, animals are hung in the Hotel Ashburton carpark for inspection. The event caters for children and juniors as well as adult hunters.

KiwiRail scholarship Ashburton’s Stacey Hopwood is one of 10 young New Zealanders awarded a KiwiRail scholarship that will see her bank account boosted by $2000. The scholarships were awarded to children of KiwiRail employees who are undertaking a first undergraduate degree or diploma at a New Zealand university or polytechnic. Stacey is studying physiotherapy at the University of Otago. She was last year’s winner of Ashburton’s Trustpower Spirit of Youth Award and winner of the outstanding junior official at the Mid Canterbury Sports Awards.

Verbal abuse harder to ‘pin down’

The fact that verbal assaults are now the most common form of bullying in schools comes as no surprise to one Methven principal.

Data collated from the responses of 18,000 children from years five to 13 who took part in the CensusAtSchool project shows that verbal assaults were more common than any other form of bullying.

The anonymous survey revealed that 36 per cent of participants believed that verbal abuse was a problem, while 31 per cent were concerned about cyberbullying.

Physical bullying was considered less of a problem in New Zealand schools.

Nine Mid Canterbury schools have participated in the project, which asks students questions about a range of different topics.

For Mount Hutt College principal John Schreurs, the changing nature of society was reflected in the form that bullying took.

He believed that society has

become less tolerant of physical violence, which has influenced the nature of bullying in schools.

“People would make excuses for physical violence before, but now you can’t have an excuse for that,” he said.

“Society doesn’t have a stomach for it anymore.”

He said that verbal and online bullying were often harder to pin down, as it was increasingly easy for people to remain anonymous.

However, he believed that students were beginning to feel more comfortable reporting cases of bullying.

“Just toughen up and deal with it was sort of the attitude before,” he said.

However, that had changed over time and he believed students felt their concerns would be taken more seriously than in the past.

The CensusAtSchool project found that physical bullying was only a problem at their school for 19 per cent of students, while social or relational bullying was a problem for 25 per cent of students.

Nothing like a bit of law and order ...

Mount Hutt College’s upcoming play Law and Order Nursery Rhyme Unit (NRU) opens at the college tonight.

Producer Lisa Ponweiser said rehearsals were going well and the 40 students involved were looking forward to staging the show three nights this week.

The head of faculty art is working alongside head of department music Hugo Zanker as di-

rector and music tutor Wayne Pannett as musical director.

The play represents a departure from what the school has presented in the past, but students are rising to the occasion and loving the comedic side of the show, Ms Ponweiser said.

Tickets will be available at the door from 6.30pm tonight, tomorrow night and Thursday night. It stages at 7pm each night.

Rural bachelor rates competition highly By sue newman

Jarred Clode might not have won the woman of his dreams, but he still rates this year’s Mystery Creek rural bachelor competition as one of the best experiences of his life.

Today the 31-year-old Hinds farmer is back home, doing what he loves and reflecting on an experience he reckons was as far outside his comfort zone as he could get.

“I can’t believe the great people I met. The other seven guys were great and quite a few of the women have messaged me – who knows what will come out of this,” he said.

Women aside, Mr Clode said the event provided him with a great opportunity to be at an event that attracted top people from the farming industry from around New Zealand.

He was talked into entering by his Pendarves Young Farmer mates, never dreaming he’d make the cut. He did, and that’s when

the nerves started to kick in.

However, once he met his competitors the event went from fear to fun.

Over the series of challenges the contestants had to undergo, he reckons the eight were neck in neck.

“At the end of the day it was a hard one to call. We all believed it was really close as we’d all won challenges and lost challenges.

I’m not disappointed not to have won as it’s what I got out of it that was the main thing.”

His favourite event was speed dating, his biggest success a fencing knot and his biggest disappointment finding his carefully crafted breakfast smoothie didn’t measure up to the judge’s breakfast standards.

“Probably the biggest challenge was in the first couple of days, having to smile for the camera all the time and having the media in your face.

“The challenges themselves were quite easy and they were short and sharp,” he said.

And he was impressed with the bachelorettes.

“They were all quite goodlooking girls but unfortunately most of them live in the North Island,” he said.

When he was asked what he was looking for in a girl, Mr Clode replied – “someone who enjoys the same things as me and someone who will be my best mate.” He was concerned that might have come across as ‘cheesy’ but he said he got plenty of good feedback on that one.

His family came over from Palmerston North as his support team and while he might be a North Islander by birth, Mr Clode says his future lies in the South.

“It’s good to come back home down here and know that every day you won’t need a rain coat like you do in the Waikato.”

He might not have found the love of his life among the crowds at this year’s Mystery Creek Fieldays, but the event was an outstanding experience, he said.

Help for injured woman in Athens

While Ashburton woman Carol Hill lies badly injured in a Greek hospital, her community is rallying to help her family meet the mounting bills associated with her care.

Mrs Hill and husband Barrie were holidaying on the Greek island of Santorini when she was struck by a motorbike.

The badly injured woman was airlifted to Athens, a trip that is

believed to have cost the family Euro10,000 ($NZ16,120), family friend Kevin Opele said.

While the Hills have medical insurance, he knew there would be significant bills to be paid before any cash became available and has set up an appeal he hopes will help bridge that financial gap.

“I’ve known the Hills for years and they bend over backwards to help other people.

“If this was anyone else in this

situation, this is what they’d do,” he said.

And while insurance will eventually cover many of the costs around Mrs Hill’s treatment and Mr Hill’s support, their sons Shane and Lance will have to carry the significant costs of flying to Athens to be at their mother’s bedside, Mr Opele said.

On a Facebook community events page, Run for the Hills, Mr Opele described Mrs Hill’s

injuries as major and said they would require a long and expensive recovery.

It could be some time before she is able to return home.

“I’m hopeful that we can raise some funds to lessen the burden financially so that it’s one less thing they don’t need to worry about during the recovery,” he said.

Documents seized by police in CTV building collapse inquiry Documents and items of interest have been seized by police as part of an investigation into the collapse of the CTV building.

Four search warrants, which Detective Superintendent Peter Read said forms part of the ongoing investigation, have been executed by Canterbury Police.

The seizure of documents and items of interest were a result of these warrants.

Engineering consultants Beca have been engaged to provide police with expert opinion to the investigation.

Display helps raise profile of elder abuse

Age Concern Ashburton is raising awareness of elder abuse this week, and has set up a display in the Ashburton Arcade.

The collection of brochures, info cards and elder abuse ribbons was put together yesterday, on the 10th anniversary of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Age Concern Ashburton vice president Trish Small said it’s an important time of the year and people need to be informed about elder abuse.

She said there is help out there for those suffering from abuse or those with concerns from agencies such as Age Concern Ashburton, Presbyterian Support, Ashburton Hospital or Ashburton Senior Citizens.

As well as the display, later in the week Age Concern will be hosting a seminar about how to best protect yourself against fraud and scams.

Scam Savvy is open to the public and will run from 9am until 10am on Friday morning at the Ashburton Senior Centre.

Bronwyn Groot, a national security and fraud co-ordinator at BNZ will be speaking at the free seminar.

Elder Abuse Awareness Week runs from June 15-22 and the display will remain in the arcade all week.

In September 2014 New Zealand Police announced that it would be advancing a criminal investigation after assessing a large amount of information regarding the collapse of the CTV building during the February 2011 earthquake.

Any decisions will be subject to legal review before the final outcome of the investigation is known, which will not be until later this year.

Police said they would not be making any further comments in relation to these warrants as this was an ongoing inquiry.

Woman in custody until sentencing A 25-year-old Ashburton woman has been remanded in custody, pending an appearance in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Stacey Leigh Curtis admitted charges of driving while forbidden and driving while suspended before Judge Tony Couch, who convicted her on both matters.

Curtis had been arrested on a warrant, having failed to turn up for court appearances on four occasions. She is due to appear in the Timaru District Court for sentencing on eight charges relating to possession and supply of the class A drug methamphetamine.

“The interest of justice will be served by securing her appearance in Timaru,” Judge Couch said, before remanding Curtis in custody to be sentenced for the driving matters alongside the more serious charges.

Judge Couch told Brooke Anthony Monson he had “pooed” in his own nest when he appeared before him for breaching

the conditions of his zero alcohol drivers’ licence. Judge Couch sentenced 20-year-old Monson to 200 hours of community work and disqualified him from driving indefinitely.

Monson’s lawyer Keith Owen told the court his client had forgotten about the zero alcohol licence when he chose to drive after drinking.

He was picked up driving at 117km/h, and found to have a breath alcohol level of 164mcg/l. The holder of a zero alcohol licence must abstain from consuming any alcohol.

If, and when, Monson’s licence is returned he must reapply for a zero alcohol licence.

Nineteen-year-old Matthew Ranson has no time to waste in finding a suitable address to serve a home detention sentence, if he wants to avoid a 14-month stint in prison.

cle, driving while forbidden, and failing to answer police bail.

Judge Couch said the offending was serious, particularly the unlawful taking charge. He said Ranson drove the vehicle “to destruction”.

He said the starting point was a significant prison sentence, before remanding Ranson on bail to find an address to serve home detention, in time for probation services to process the request before he returns to court for sentencing on August 3.

Steven Noel Hurst, 35, of Ashburton, appeared for possessing an offensive weapon after he took a knife with him when he went to resolve a dispute with a neighbour. He claimed he did so for self-defence. Hurst was remanded until August 17 to complete restorative justice.

Logan Glenn Worthington Rule, 24, of Ashburton, was convicted and sentenced to 80 hours of community work for assaulting a police officer.

Tracey Helen Muckle, 20, of Ashburton was convicted and sentenced to six months supervision for stealing a camera, which she later sold.

Driving matters: Joshua Michael Hubbard, 19, of Pleasant Point, was convicted of drink driving with an excess breath alcohol level of 741 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath (EBA 741mcg/l).

Judge Couch fined him $900, ordered him to pay court costs of $130, and disqualified him from driving for eight months.

Hubbard had been drinking after a rugby match when he lost control of his car and rolled it in the Mt Somers village in May. Shawn Charles Price, 38, of Ashburton, was convicted of drink driving (EBA 548mcg/l) – he was fined $600, ordered to pay court costs of $130, and disqualified from driving for six months.

Kris John Wallington, of Ashburton, was convicted on his third count of drink driving in two years, and driving while disqualified.

Judge Couch remanded him on bail until August 3, to enable pre-sentence reports, including appendices for electronically monitored sentencing options, to be prepared. Wallington was ordered not to drive a motor vehicle.

Warrants were issued for the arrest of Richard Edwin Taylor, Robert Twiname-Darling and Hayden Michael Crawford.

Nepal desperate for tourists Nepal has reopened most of the cultural heritage sites that were damaged in a pair of devastating earthquakes, hoping to lure back foreign tourists.

The April 25 and May 12 quakes killed more than 8700 people and damaged hundreds of thousands of buildings in Nepal, including old temples, palaces and other historical structures that are popular with tourists.

Six of the seven UNESCO World Heritage sites closed after the quakes were reopened yesterday, Tourism Minister Kripasur Sherpa said.

“We are urging people to come to Nepal for holiday to help Nepal rebuild,” Sherpa said in Bhaktapur, a city filled with ancient temples that is among the reopened heritage sites.

The sites were closed due to the damage from the quakes, but also over concerns about the safety of tourists.

Tourists fled Nepal after the first quake, but it also is currently rainy season, a time when relatively few foreign visitors are usually around.

Bhesh Narayan Dahal, chief of Nepal’s Department of Archaeology, said that measures have been taken to ensure that tourists are safe, and that there are plans to provide safety hel-

mets for visitors in some places.

Some 741 heritage structures were damaged in the quakes, and it will take at least $18 million to rebuild and restore them, Dahal said.

Nepal is hosting an international donors’ meeting next week in Kathmandu, the capital, to seek money to help rebuild the Himalayan country following the quakes.

About 800,000 foreign tourists visit Nepal every year and the government is worried that a fear of earthquakes will stop many from visiting.

UNESCO, the United Nations’ cultural heritage organisation, had raised concerns last week about the reopening of the heritage sites, urging tourists to be extra cautious and reconsider visiting them.

Pacific trade in limbo How slow can you go? The effort to get US trade legislation through Congress, clearing the way for progress on an Asia-Pacific trade accord, is in limbo once again.

The US House of Representatives has shot down a proposal to give President Barack Obama authority to negotiate global trade deals for congressional approval or rejection, without amendments.

Among US trading partners, the setback was viewed more with resignation than panic. Trade officials in Japan and Australia reacted to the defeat of the Trade Promotion Authority by saying that without it, the effort to forge the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership trade pact was unlikely to succeed.

Zoo animals missing Rescue workers in the Georgian capital are still searching for at least two dozen people and an undetermined number of potentially dangerous animals missing after severe flooding ravaged the city’s zoo and left at least 12 people dead. Tbilisi zoo director Zurab Gurielidze said the zoo animals were set free in the flooding. Three zoo employees drowned. Among the animals that fled the flooded zoo were lions, tigers, bears, wolves and a hippopotamus.

here should be no surprise that many young people say they have been bullied with words while frustrated parents unwittingly do the same thing on social media.

The national CensusAtSchool project found verbal abuse was the biggest bullying problem at schools as reported by students aged between nine and 18.

Cyberbullying was almost as prevalent, with 31 per cent of respondents agreeing it was a problem. Girls were more likely than boys to report cyberbullying and it was worse at high schools.

Bullying in Ashburton has had an unwelcomely high, even national profile in recent months with the alleged, socalled Isis bullying incident prompting all manner of claims and counterclaims online.

The district’s principals urged parents to let their schools know when they had concerns.

This was the best way, they said, to make sure things could be resolved.

But the combined word of our district’s school principals has not been enough to make worried parents take their concerns to the people best placed to help sort them out.

On social media last week, a virtual town hall meeting of sometimes angry, sometimes frustrated adults railed against alleged bullying at some local schools and an alleged schoolage bully was named.

Some acknowledged they had not complained to the schools, and some challenged the alleged bully and their parents to pull their heads in before they were pulled in for them.

Parents want to protect their children, but it is difficult to see how channelling frustration and anger in an open social media forum will bring a constructive, controlled resolution to a realworld problem.

Opting out of established school processes means opting out of mechanisms that are meant to be carefully monitored and which are meant to make people accountable every step of the way.

It is hard to trust official processes when you want a speedy resolution that will protect your child, but garnering likes online will not help our schools keep the bullies in line.

YOUR VIEW Water hearing I note that the [Canterbury] regional council hearings to decide the future of the Hinds district are starting this week.

The outcomes of these hearings into the future of the Hinds catchment is of huge importance to our local community.

The regional council has decided to hold these hearings at Lincoln instead of in our district, thus ensuring that it has made it as difficult as possible for our community to fully participate in this process; but presumably convenient for wellpaid ECan staff and hearing commissioners.

That is more than a pity as this was meant to be an inclusive collaborative process.

I can’t help but think that this continues the attitude of contempt that the regional council

has shown for the greater Hinds community in the way that the original zone committee and the regional council engaged in the so-called collaborative process to write the proposals we are now faced with.

Most [members] of that zone committee live outside the Ashburton district and only one member lives in the Hinds catchment; all their workshops were held behind closed doors, and some of the most significant stakeholders were excluded from these discussions until the plan was drawn and it was too late for any sensible local input.

I’m willing to bet that all other sub-regional hearings are held within their own districts.

Variation two to the Land and Water Regional Plan gives statutory backing to the recommendations developed by the Ashburton Zone Committee.

To develop these recommendations the Ashburton Zone Committee held eight community meetings, 25 stakeholder meetings and 29 zone committee meetings, all of which were open to the public and held in the Hinds and Mayfield area.

Following community and stakeholder feedback the Ashburton Zone Committee developed the following overarching vision for the Hinds Plains area “provide for additional 30,000 ha of irrigation while improving the water quality in the lower plains and maintaining the current state in the upper plains”. Variation two provides the statutory basis to give this vision life. Hearings on Variation two will begin tomorrow

in Lincoln. Environment Canterbury tried to hold the hearing in Ashburton, but a suitable venue could not be found which was available for the entire hearing, therefore the Lincoln Events Centre was chosen as the venue for the hearing.

Fonterra debate on the wrong track T

he argument about how well Fonterra is performing is gathering

pace.

People are claiming there is a bloated management. We have politicians calling for the CEO to take a pay cut. That CEO has just indicated possible redundancies as an outcome of an internal review.

The view seems to be that a number of support roles in New Zealand need to go and be replaced by people in the market.

Pub talk fixes on how many are earning more than what amount and then assumes that if the pay is slashed the problem is sorted.

I think we sometimes forget how big Fonterra is. You don’t pay small wages to top people to run a business like that. A far more sensible discussion for us to be having would be on what Fonterra pays in wages as a percentage of turnover. And then break that down by division. Then compare with other successful dairy co-ops from around the world and see what lessons we can take.

pared to others, yes, we overpay the senior management, but underpay the scientists, or something else like that. This current discussion seems to be just based on envy rather than something that will actually give us useful information.

As for pay cuts! Quite frankly if they are not performing you replace them with someone who will perform. If they don’t have the ability or inclination to perform then cutting their base pay is hardly likely to encourage them to start performing.

If we have the attitude that in a bad year everyone takes a pay cut, then we must accept the reverse in a good year when everyone gets massive pay increases.

If you’re arguing that, then surely you need to implement the same on your own farm.

The reality is you pay a com-

petitive salary to attract and retain the quality you need.

Fonterra does have a really good bonus system. I actually copied it for my farm. The question is, do they have the right KPIs in it? Do the KPIs they are attempting to achieve, reflect making life better for me on farm, or are they various financial measures that don’t actually mean a lot to me on farm.

This recent talk of the need for major restructuring has me really concerned. I quite frankly feel there has been too much chopping and changing, and the messaging around this review or restructuring leads me to have an increased level of concern on the subject. It takes people time to settle into a role and build up knowledge.

If we have a series of musical chairs with people constantly shifting about, do they really know their role inside out?

Why was the cheese quota form not filled out in the US? Possibly the person in the role didn’t know what the hell they were supposed to be doing.

made the other week. Between now and when the board makes a decision, most Fonterra staff have a level of doubt hanging over whether they will have a job and be able to pay the mortgage and other bills. In that situation are you going to be focused on adding value to milk, or looking for a Plan B on Trade Me jobs.

As for these reviews, Fonterra had the big strategic refresh only a couple of years ago, and a whole bunch of changes since then. The obvious question is, if we have people in the wrong place why wasn’t all this identified back then and since then?

Are these changes being talked about just a routine evolution of a business over time? None of our farms stay still. We keep making little changes each year.

Is this just the same or is it bigger?

The unfortunate appearance is that it’s just a knee-jerk response.

Fonterra chief targeted

Opposition parties have hit out at Fonterra chief executive Theo Spierings’ salary after it was revealed he is the country’s second highest paid executive, earning $4.18 million.

He was also the second highest paid New Zealand executive in 2013.

The figures were revealed in the Business Herald’s executive pay survey yesterday morning, and come after Mr Spierings was given a pay rise of $660,000 in 2014.

Fonterra last week announced a review of its head office structure as the business comes under pressure from falling global dairy prices.

Federated Farmers dairy industry group chairman Andrew Hoggard said Spierings’ salary was probably appropriate for a chief executive running a company the size of Fonterra, but he

wanted to know how much of Spierings’ pay was the base salary and how much was based on an at-risk component based on key performance indicators.

“The big question I’ve got is, ‘how the performance is actually measured’,” he said.

“In both seasons we’ve seen very little dividend growth, I would assume his performance would be based around the dividend and the performance of Fonterra in terms of its divi-

Labour finance spokesman Grant Robertson said the salaries of the bosses of New Zealand’s biggest companies, which

rose by an average of 10 per cent last year while the average worker received only on average a 3 per cent increase, compromised the Kiwi notion of a fair go.

“No-one begrudges people who do difficult, complex and time-consuming jobs being paid a decent salary, but salaries and salary increases for chief executives have now reached absurd levels,” he said.

“CEO salary levels are becoming obscene, especially when so many front-line workers are working hard, but are really doing it tough. We saw that last week, with Fonterra announcing hundreds of lay-offs, but the CEO got a $660,000 pay increase last year,” Mr Robertson said.

Spierings told media last Wednesday the company was in the middle of a major review, which began in December, to restructure the company’s management team.

Air New Zealand is reviewing 60 engineering jobs as the airline shifts heavy maintenance work overseas.

The airline has already had Boeing 777s and 767s worked on in Singapore and is now looking for overseas contractors for heavy maintenance on its entire wide body fleet.

While about 60 roles would be assessed during the next six months it was possible some of them could be redeployed to other Air New Zealand operations, the airline said.

The Engineering Printing and Manufacturing Union (EPMU) said it is disappointed the work would go offshore and had fought to keep the jobs here.

“We believe we are a world class facility with world class engineers and a top safety record around engineering.

“We want that assurance that people flying Air New Zealand have our top safety brand and our tradesman on it,” said the union’s director of aviation organising Strachan Crang.

“This was announced 18 months ago when the figure of jobs was 137. This is now the last group to go after the volunteers.”

Jobs had already been lost by attrition and voluntary redundancies, he said, but more could be done to keep heavy work – where engines, undercarriag-

es and airframes are stripped down – in this country.

“Sadly what we’ve been doing is arguing about the process concerning redundant workers and not enough work has been done to try and get work for them here,” Crang said.

One worker said staff were “absolutely gutted” by the moves.

“The only work that will remain in Auckland is A-Checks on jets and line work, all remaining heavy maintenance will be carried out by foreign staff and done in Singapore,” the worker said.

Air New Zealand’s chief operations officer Bruce Parton said modern aircraft needed much less heavy work and keeping staff here for increasingly fewer checks was not viable. The airline’s Dreamliners wouldn’t need a scheduled major check for nine years.

“The issue isn’t really the cost base, the issue is that there’s no work.”

At the end of this week staff in affected areas would get notification of whether there would be a future role for them and this would be followed by an opportunity to appeal.

The final outcome of this process would be known by the end of next month.

There were opportunities for affected staff in other areas of the business and later this month the airline would run a jobs expo to showcase various roles including regional maintenance in Nelson, Safe Air and its cargo division.

Parton said Air New Zealand and Virgin Australia were now looking for long-term arrangements for their Boeing 777s.

Suggestions that overseas engineers were not as good as those here were not right.

“Any suggestion that we have the only skilled engineers in the world is just rubbish. We have skilled engineers but to suggest that others don’t is just not the case.”

Body condition score to become a breeding trait Body condition score (BCS) is to be included as a new trait in Breeding Worth (BW) from February.

Breeding Worth provides farmers with an economic measure of genetic merit (profit per five tonne of dry matter) and is calculated for all dairy cattle. During a National Breeding Objective Review in 2012, BCS (particularly late lactation BCS) was identified as an important trait with economic value to farmers.

NZ Animal Evaluation Ltd (NZAEL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of DairyNZ, estimates the economic value of BCS to be $106 per BCS score. It was also determined that rates of genetic gain in BW would be enhanced by the inclusion of the BCS breeding trait. This view is supported by national and international review.

NZAEL manager Dr Jeremy Bryant said the economic value of BCS comes from two components. “The first and main component is the increased value of a cow with good condition milking well into late lactation, rather than drying her off early because she is too thin.

“The second component is the reduced

cost of a cow maintaining condition, as compared to a cow that loses condition in the spring, and as a result requires more feed through autumn or winter when it is more expensive,” Dr Bryant said.

Both of these components are based on the value of increased body condition score in late lactation rather than early in lactation.

“With this in mind, it is important that the breeding value for this trait represents genetic differences between animals in late lactation.

“Our studies showed there were minimal differences between breeds in late lactation BCS, especially between friesians and jerseys, and farmers often make decisions to dry off cows based on both BCS and breed. Because of this, the BCS breeding value will be breed neutral, so it is more aligned to a late lactation equivalent,” Dr Bryant said.

A ‘breed neutral’ adjustment will be applied to the breeding value and will come into effect this month and BCS will be included in the BW calculation from February.

Live sheep export ‘a Godsend’ for Canty farmers

The live sheep export from Timaru to Mexico is a Godsend for Canterbury and Mexican farmers and should be repeated, according to Federated Farmers.

Meat and Fibre Industry Group chairperson Rick Powdrell said much of the controversy surrounding the shipment was emotive and not “fully informed”.

“We’ve got to protect Canterbury farmers. A lot of them have been in a severe drought.

This has been a Godsend for them and for the Mexican farmers because they have been in a drought too.”

Mr Powdrell was “rigorously confident” sheep could be transported overseas safely and that proper processes had taken place to enable that to happen.

He believed the transition from grass to hard feeds at the Rangitata feedlot had been managed well.

“That provides the opportunity where any animals with a weakness are removed.”

Mr Powdrell refuted much of Safe’s accusations and said

farmers should be able to choose where they want to sell their sheep.

“At the end of the day it’s the right of the farmers to be able to make their decision where they market their stock.”

Although SAFE head of campaigns Mandy Carter claimed on the Paul Henry Show that Federated Farmers did not support live shipments, Mr Powdrell assured farmers the lobby group “certainly have never taken that stance”.

Last week Mexican ambassador Leonora Rueda told the Guardian the 45,000 breeding ewes would be treated humanely and were needed to replace animals lost in the severe drought

the country has been experiencing.

She squashed speculation the sheep would be mistreated in Mexico and said as part of the North American Free Trade Agreement with Canada and the US, slaughter and welfare conditions of livestock were constantly under surveillance.

Broker Peter Walsh earlier said the export was positive for farming and he hoped it would be ongoing.

Farmers were offered $120 to $130 per lamb – 35 per cent more than current Canterbury prices and up to 55 per cent in other areas. The sheep would be sold for $US300 in Mexico, he said.

Lupins threaten native ecosystems Environment Canterbury and the New Zealand Merino Company are working towards an agreement on the way russell lupins should be managed, to avoid spread.

Don Chittock, Environment Canterbury programme manager, said his organisation understood russell lupin was being trialled as a fodder crop for high country sheep, but also wanted farmers to know it was a serious weed.

“We recognise that farmers, agencies and the merino industry are looking for options to combat the dry climate and meet the Government’s goal of growing production and doubling the value of primary industry exports by 2025,” Mr Chittock said.

The challenge was to allow production of alternative fodder crops while avoiding a high public cost of controlling spread. This would require good management practices being developed and followed.

The New Zealand Merino Company (NZMCo) commissioned Lincoln University trials demonstrating that russell lupins held on to soils which might otherwise blow away and tolerated aluminium levels toxic to lucerne.

The Ministry for Primary Industries’ Primary Growth Partnership helped fund these trials, as part of NZMCo’s New Zealand Sheep Industry Transformation Project aimed at improving merino genetics, health and forage.

Mr Chittock said public funds were already being spent controlling russell lupins in areas with high biodiversity values. However, their biodiversity protection pest status in the Canterbury Regional Pest Management Plan meant there were no restrictions on planting or requirements to control spread.

Environment Canterbury biodiversity team leader Jo Abbott said braided rivers were one of the most susceptible habitats to russell lupins which out-competed native plants and choked nesting habitats for endangered birds.

“Dense stands trap gravel, providing easy access for cats, rats, mustelids and other predators as well as exacerbating flooding and erosion,” Dr Abbott said.

Patches had also been discovered in inter-montane basins and foothills, montane scree slopes, alpine valley floors and wetlands and margins of spring-fed streams in the Canterbury high country.

MARKET REPORT Dairy Pasture growth rates are reverting back into winter mode, but there are still concerns about the lack of soil moisture reserves in much of the Canterbury region.

North Canterbury is in serious deficit with more capital stock livestock sales occurring, and support services are looking for more surplus stored feed.

Early reports suggest there has again been animal health issues with feeding of fodderbeet and HT swedes to dairy cows and farmers are being urged to transition slowly over 21 days.

Fonterra is bringing in the consultants to review its management structures, as it looks to reduce costs and restore the severely dented confidence of the shareholders.

The past production drive for more milk is not the strategy for the future, warns KPMG’s agribusiness chief, who suggests the sector must add more value to its products.

Synlait reduced this year’s payout prediction to $4.40-$4.60/kg ms, but estimated next year’s at $5.50, which will help its suppliers cope better with early cash-flow issues.

Lamb The news from the lamb markets is still gloomy although some upward schedule movements has been seen, as chilled markets start to dominate present processing numbers.

More signs that all is not well in the sheep sector, with last week the largest ever live shipment of 45,000 mated hoggets leaving from Timaru for Mexico.

The Meat Industry Excellence group has come up with a plan for reinvigorating the sector, but whether the two co-operatives believe it is palatable is yet to be revealed.

Winter contracts for lamb are sitting in the $5.20-$5.80 range and look unlikely to rise in the spring, and prime lambs at saleyards are selling close to lows for the year with little premium being paid for wintering.

Wool Wool’s momentum continued at auction with the latest NI offering producing strong pricing and a nearcomplete clearance.

Soft supply is driving demand with yearly bale numbers down 13 per cent at auction and total volumes 5 per cent back, although in this rising market auction numbers could return.

Next week’ SI auction has been cancelled due to insufficient wool coming forward and lack of stocks in brokers’ stores.

Beef Beef schedules have started to move off their recent levels, as the big cow kill has passed and demand returns for winter prime stock.

Demand in the US remains strong as the US grilling season starts, and NZ producers can look forward to a period of sustainable pricing, helped recently by NZ’s easing currency against the US.

Deer Venison schedules have begun to lift as processors begin to enter the chilled product season, in a market low in stocks and a currency at last helping stimulate competitive pricing.

A quiet optimism is emerging in the industry that the bottom has been reached and that farmers will again invest in managed growth by retaining more females.

Ashburton’s lost art

thel Jones, journalist and artist, was for 27 years connected with Ashburton. But the town has no public record of her work. All that is known comes from newspaper items, directories and official documents.

Ethel Susan, an only child, was born in England in 1870 and arrived in Nelson in July 1876 with her parents Annie and Thomas, assisted immigrants on the Camperdown.

Two years later Thomas brought his family to Seafield to manage a property for Hooper and Dobson of Nelson. He owned a smallholding in Smithfield Road and Annie died there in 1887. When Thomas died in 1905 Ethel was living with him.

Details of her art training are unclear although her art class advertisements at the beginning of 1899 show her to be well trained.

She was present at a meeting in July 1900 to set up technical classes in Ashburton and subsequently she was elected to the town’s Technical Classes Association.

It is possible she had some involvement with its art classes.

In the same year she displayed a portrait of William J Silcock, a local butcher and member of the Mounted Rifles, in John Wilson’s painting and wallpaper shop in the Arcade.

From 1892 to 1935 occasional newspaper reports of art exhibitions in various places, Ashburton, Christchurch, Nelson, Wellington and Auckland mention artworks, mostly watercolours, by her; streetscapes, landscapes, and animal studies.

The reviewer of the 1892 Ashburton exhibition admired her animal studies and made special mention of them. An 1894 catalogue of the Canterbury Society of Arts lists her as a working member. The last two public reports of her art come in 1935.

at a New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts Exhibition and November when she received an invitation from the prestigious Julian Ashton School of Art, Sydney, to send some landscapes for exhibition.

A tantalising item in the Ashburton Guardian at the end of November 1901 announced Ethel Jones and a fellow art student, Miss Golman, were to cross the Southern Alps by way of the Whitcombe Pass to Hokitika with a James Duncan as their guide on a sketching and botanising trip. This pass from the head of the Whitcombe River (which flows into the Rakaia River) to the headwaters of the Hokitika River had been regularly used by Maoris and was named after surveyor Henry Whitcombe.

In 1901 it was a difficult and dangerous trip without the benefit of modern lightweight camping equipment, long range weather forecasts or any means of communication.

Adding to the difficulties was the unpredictability of norwest gales with torrential rain that turned gentle streams into raging torrents within hours, keeping travellers tent-bound for days.

On December 10 the Ashburton Guardian published a brief account written by Ethel about their travels as far as the upper reaches of the Rakaia commenting on the steepness of the country, the size of the boulders, ‘awesome, but rarely

artistic’ but she did appreciate the Mount Cook lilies ‘staining every gully with flecks of snow’.

Two days later a W de B Compton wrote to the Ashburton Guardian aghast at the thought of what ‘these venturesome young women’ were attempting and imploring ‘their relatives to follow them up and bring them back’ or an obituary notice might be required for more than one of the party.

No account of the trip appeared after that first news item describing the hardships of travelling through such country, no sketches were mentioned in the Ashburton Guardian.

However, a year later, plants they succeeded in bringing back from the head of the Rakaia River were ‘thriving in the Ashburton Domain’.

As an artist Ethel Jones remained a gifted amateur.

Journalism provided her income – her obituary described her as one of New Zealand’s

‘pioneer newspaper women’. It is not known when or for how long she was on the staff of the Ashburton Guardian but following her father’s death in 1905 she left Ashburton permanently. Several years later the local paper noted she had had two articles published in overseas journals; one in the New York Evening Post on the frozen meat industry and the other on the history of Women’s Suffrage in New Zealand in an English paper. By mid 1913 she was in Auckland on the staff of the Sporting and Dramatic Review, a journal published on fine art paper with numerous illustrations.

Less than three years later she joined the Auckland Star where she became lady editor in January 1921 until her retirement about 1932.

Today she is remembered by the Ethel Jones Fine Arts Travelling Scholarship offered to students and former students of the School of Fine Arts by the University of Canterbury.

Eighteen examples of her work survive in the Alexander Turnbull Library. Among these watercolours of buildings and landscapes there is a three quarter portrait, in oil, of the author Jane Mander.

There are no examples of her work in Ashburton despite her having lived and exhibited here and maintaining links, until 1920 at least, with local people.

Maybe on some wall there hangs one of her animal studies or landscapes unrecognised or maybe even a portrait of some forbear, the artist unknown by the family.

Confidence boost for college

Ashburton College came away with a strong 36-8 win over Lincoln in round eight of the UC Rugby Championship on Saturday.

College called on their forward pack to set the tone at the Ashburton Showgrounds and they answered – laying the platform for a six-tries to one victory.

“We kept really tight for the first 20 minutes to try and bowl their forwards over,” coach Dave McCrea said.

“It worked and things opened up for us for the rest of the game to score some pretty good tries.

“We got a bit too loose in the second half but still scored a further two tries.”

First five Dallas McLeod was strong directing the side around the park while captain Benji Barry made plenty of metres.

Centre Ali Prescott, flankers Max Stapleton, Cam McLeod and lock Barry all scored in the first half as college collected a bonus point on their way to a 24-3 half-time lead with a conversions for Dallas McLeod and Kerry Claydon-Wade.

Halfback Cameron Turpin burrowed over in the second half and Prescott powered over for his second and a conversion from McLeod.

Promotion chance Ashburton College have a promotion match against Rangiora in the Canterbury Secondary Schools Thompson Trophy basketball competition in the EA Networks Centre sports stadium tonight. The college boys finished on top of division two with a seven win one loss record, while Rangiora was winless in division one. The winner of tonight’s game will step up into division one. This is the inaugural season for the competition and to advance to division one would be a big step for college. St Bedes - the only team to topple college but finished second in division two - meet Papanui in the other promotion relegation match. Ashburton College also has Kody Stuthridge named into the inaugural All Stars game. Stuthridge will play for West against East on June 26 as a curtainraiser for the Canterbury Rams on June 26 at Cowles Stadium.

Golden finish for Ashburton bowlers There were no national titles to bring home, but Ashburton Indoor Bowlers overall performed well at the annual national championships last week.

A large contingent of players competed each day during the week-long event and some notable results were achieved.

Geoff Laird finished the pick of the Ashburton players with three top 16 finishes along with a final 32 finish as well.

Laird, who played alongside his wife, Bernice, in everything other than the singles was in good form all week and left some of New Zealand’s best bowlers in his wake on the way to registering a very noteworthy week worth of results.

Matt Markham finished the week with two semi-final spots in the triples and the pairs, while Grant Wilson, Darryn Turner, Alex Crawford, Matt Bassett and Ken Mackenzie all had a solid week on the mat.

In the masters event, played for the first time this year, Jimmy Stewart’s last eight finish in the singles was a highlight.

The competition closed on Saturday with the final of the Fours Championship.

The final was won by one of New Zealand’s best players, Grant L’Ami who played alongside Paul Midgley and Mike and Lorraine Phipps.

Michael Lawson and Alex Crawford, who combined with Ashley Diamond and Stephen Preddy, were the best of the Ashburton players making the quarter finals.

The Mackenzie family of Ken, Rowena, Laura and Tayler made the last 32 and were joined by Darryn Turner playing alongside three players from the Southland region.

Canterbury’s James Sullivan was named player of the tournament after he was a beaten finalist in the fours, beaten semi-finalist in the triples and singles and finished in the last 16 in the pairs.

Despite the demanding nature of the week, it was back to business on Sunday morning for a number of Ashburton players with the annual Championship Fours title up for grabs.

The occasions became a special one for both Jimmy Stewart and Rowena Mackenzie who picked up their Gold Star for a fifth Ashburton title when they combined with Michael Lawson and Ken Mackenzie to win the competition on a count back.

Played for as a round robin for the first time this year, the quartet emerged victorious from a strong field and in doing so also gave Mackenzie his 20th Ashburton title to go alongside his victory in the Jim Patterson singles earlier this season.

The Crusaders are disappointed that the Hemispheres Cup match they were invited to play against Saracens in August in New Orleans has been cancelled and they hope their fans will be able to gain refunds for any tickets that were purchased. The organisers of the match, RugbyLaw in the US, have contacted the Crusaders and Saracens to say they have made the decision to cancel the game.

“This is obviously a disappointing outcome, given that we had received all assurances up until this point the game would proceed,” Crusaders chief executive Hamish Riach said.

Slim chance for Rio New Zealand’s hopes of qualifying for the Rio Olympic men’s hockey competition hang by a thread.

The Black Sticks were beaten 3-1 by lower-ranked Spain in their final game at the World League semifinals in Buenos Aires yesterday. That dashes seventhranked New Zealand’s hopes of qualifying for Rio through finishing fifth, and leaves them needing to beat Australia in the Oceania Cup in Taranaki in October. Spain had far more possession and looked more committed to the task than the Black Sticks who did well on far less ball but were unable to capitalise on chances.

Warriors on fire After four games of substandard shooting in the NBA Finals, Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry has exploded with 37 points.

Curry finally found his shot and shook himself from Cleveland Cavaliers’ Australian guard Matthew Dellavedova to lead the Warriors to a 104-91 win in Oakland yesterday. It gives the Warriors a 3-2 lead in the finals and a win on Tuesday in Cleveland will give Golden State the title.

Curry didn’t gloat about his point scoring blitz on Dellavedova, despite tension between the players during the finals. “We are just out here to compete,” Curry said. “He’s doing his job and I’m doing mine.” Curry went headto-head with Cleveland’s LeBron James, who had 40 points, in a scoring duel.

Pressure on Currie to wrap up adventure series Braden Currie’s pursuit of the USA Xterra championship title became more of a challenge after he finished second in a Virginia qualifying event yesterday.

Currie was runner-up to the 10-time Xterra USA national champion, American Josiah Middaugh, meaning he has to win both of the last two Xterra America tour events.

It is a feat no New Zealander has achieved and Currie has sacrificed all other racing to make his dream a reality.

“I know the pressure is on now but I’m feeling positive about what I can do,” Currie said.

“Things haven’t gone as plan so far as I’ve been sick for three of the last four weeks and living at altitude has made my recovery tough. But I have a good block coming up and I know I can beat Josiah, as I did a month ago. I just have to get some solid training in.”

He had planned a month’s training block after winning the Southeast event last month but illness hampered his preparation.

overseas and said that there were “no excuses” for finishing second in 2hours:28mins:40secs to Middaugh’s 2:24:53 on the Richmond-based course today.

“It was tough to find my usual enjoyment for competing and I just didn’t really get into the rhythm of the race.”

He did however tick off a first – swimming an Xterra course in a river, instead of the usual lake option. Held in the James River, the 1.2km swim started at the Brown’s Island boat ramp where competitors swum across the river to Belle Island, got out of the water, sprinted a short distance across the island and then swum back to shore.

Currie’s multisport background came in handy as he was able to apply his kayaking expertise to judge how to “ferry glide” across the current to find the most direct line to the swim course’s marker buoys.

Slightly shorter than the customary Xterra-length 1.5km swim, it meant Currie was only about 30 seconds ahead of Middaugh, who is traditionally not as strong in the water.

Currie soon sped into the lead on the 32km mountain bike “but it just wasn’t really happening” for the 29-year-old.

Middaugh and Rotorua‘s Olly Shaw caught up with him and although Currie poured all his energy into staying on his rivals’ wheels, Middaugh pulled away to a two-minute lead going into

the 10km trail run. There was to be no repeat of the dramatic sprint finish from Alabama last month - when Currie edged out Middaugh in the final 100m.

Middaugh maintained his lead on the run and Currie had an almost three minute advantage over American Ryan Ignatz.

Currie is heading to Costa

Rica this week where he will join his family to combine a little rest and recreation with racing in the Red Bull Escape from Alcatraz multi-sport race.

He will then returns to his base in Steamboat Springs for another block of training before his last Xterra series race in Colorado on July 18.

Webster back for Breakers The Breakers took another vital step towards finalising their roster for the upcoming 2015/16 Australian National Basketball League campaign, with shooting guard Corey Webster signing on for a further three-year deal.

The 26-year-old has developed into one of the league’s premier scorers, backing up his stellar Fiba World Cup in 2014 with a break-out year for the four-time champions.

Webster moved to a starting role last season, averaging a clubleading 15.3 points per game and 1.7 assists per game, including a career high mark of 24 points in the first semi-final against Adelaide to set the Breakers on a post-season sweep to the title.

But the man known as The Microwave for his ability to heat up quickly earned plaudits from head coach Dean Vickerman not just for his renowned offence, but for his increased contribution at the defensive end of the floor.

“Corey will always be known as a scorer but it was his commitment to defensive challenges and growth in leadership that pleased the coaching staff the most last season and it is that all round contribution that makes him such

a valuable member of our club,” Vickerman said.

Webster was delighted to have confirmed his future with the club that he first played for as a development player in 2008.

“I am pleased to know that the next three years of my career will be with the Breakers.

In making the decision, Emily [Webster’s wife] and I had to consider where we wanted to live, to make our home and to play out the next phase of my career and there was no question we want to be with the Breakers family.

“Our success last year has mo-

tivated me to return even hungrier for more and to further develop my game. I have spoken with coach Vickerman about my role and the possibility of playing some point guard as well as in the two-spot, and that excites me. Bring it on.”

Webster however has not shut down the possibility of playing at a higher level, with the club and player agreeing on an NBA out clause should an opportunity come up to play on that stage.

“I am still only 26 and believe my best basketball is ahead of me and I want to test myself against the best in America and give myself a shot at playing in the NBA. I have an opportunity this week in Indiana with the Pacers and will do all I can to impress.

I do this with the blessing of the Breakers.”

Webster brings to eight the number of contracted players at the club, with the guard joining versatile swingman Tom Abercrombie, point guard Cedric Jackson, guard/forward Reuben Te Rangi, forward Mika Vukona, forward Duane Bailey, centre Alex Pledger and forward Tai Wesley in returning for last season’s champions.

Deaf Blacks call up Tuare

Celtic’s Maara Tuare made a strong debut for the New Zealand Deaf Blacks but he couldn’t help them overcome the Australians.

He will get a second, and a third, chance to secure a win in the black jersey after being invited to tour with the Deaf Blacks in November.

In the one-off trans-Tasman test on Sunday, the Australian Silent Knights held on for a hard fought 15-13 win over New Zealand for the Cochlear Cup in Christchurch.

It was just Tuare’s third deaf

rugby match but the bulking prop didn’t look out of place in the action, playing the whole 80 minutes.

New Zealand were guilty of giving away too many penalties and missing too many tackles - highlighted when Australia came up with a 65m try to go ahead 12-3 before halftime.

New Zealand came back with a try through some solid backline play to narrow the gap back to 8-12.

The Silent Knights then kicked a penalty to go out to a seven-point lead and although the Deaf Blacks battled back with a try, they missed the con-

version opportunity.

The Deaf Blacks continued to push hard for a possible match winner but it wasn’t to be as the Silent Knights held on for the two-point win.

Despite the loss, the quiet giant was all smiles, clearly pleased with his performances.

So too were the coaches.

The Deaf Blacks have a twomatch tour to Japan in November and Tuare has been given the initial nod for a spot on tour.

The 6’3” tall, 167kg Cook Islander plans to work hard on his fitness and drop down a few kilos for better mobility when he adds to his international caps.
