Shipley backs National changes New Zealand’s first-ever female prime minister, and former Mid Canterbury local, Jenny Shipley has thrown her support behind the new National Party leadership team.

Judith Collins was elected as leader of the party, and Gerry Brownlee her deputy, in a late-night emergency caucus meeting on Tuesday after Todd Muller resigned earlier that morning.

Shipley told RNZ’s Morning Report that Collins may well be the fourth woman Prime Minister in New Zealand and that she would be delighted if that were the case.

“Judith is a very experienced politician. She’s been an outstanding minis-

ter in multiple portfolios, she’s always across the details, she’s extremely bright ... she doesn’t take prisoners and I mean that in a constructive way.

“She’s not a person who is unkind, she’s a person who will look at the facts and then make a judgement.”

She said Collins and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern were both capable leaders.

“Gerry [Brownlee] is a very good manager,” she said.

She said the deputy needed to back the leader and support the caucus.

“Gerry is overqualified. I’ve worked with Gerry in Canterbury when we were in deep and complex trouble post the

earthquake ... he is a solid leader.

“Of course I think they can win.”

It all started on Tuesday morning when former party leader Todd Muller announced he was resigning, effective immediately, due to health reasons.

Over the next few hours National MPs rushed to Wellington from around the country, including Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon, who arrived in Wellington on the same flight as Matt Doocey, Nicky Wagner and Ian McKelvie.

Farmers urged to cut synthetic nitrogen use

Mid Canterbury dairy farmers are being urged to start cutting their synthetic nitrogen fertiliser use this season in anticipation of the 190kg per hectare cap being implemented from July next year.

At an Irrigo Centre Facing our Future expo and trade show at the Hotel Ashburton, farmers were told that water quality in Mid Canterbury was under stress and a lot of this was connected to farming activity.

Six irrigation schemes operate under the Irrigo banner, covering 180,000 hectares in Mid Canterbury. Collectively, this represented 20 per cent of New Zealand’s irrigated area, Irrigo Centre environmental manager Eva Harris said.

“So, the changes that we make individually will collectively make a big difference to water quality in our catchment.”

“I can’t fight your corner until I see these trends go in the opposite direction. So, we need to make change to see change.”

Positive change was occurring with almost 75 per cent of Barrhill Chertsey Irrigation shareholders now meeting good management practice, compared with 10 per

cent when the auditing programme started about five years ago.

As 80 per cent of Irrigo shareholders applied an average of more than 190kg/ha of nitrogen, the Government-imposed cap would have a significantly disproportionate impact on Canterbury farmers, Harris said.

Information provided to Irrigo from farmers’ nutrient budgets showed that while some big nitrogen users were applying up to 500kg/ha, the average application rate was coming down.

Last year, Mid Canterbury dairy farmers applied an average 220kg/ha of nitrogen, down from 250kg/ha in 2015-18.

About 10 per cent of Irrigo shareholders were applying more than 300kg/N/ha, Harris said.

No information had been provided by government on how the 190kg/ha cap would be calculated, or what product types were included, though it had indicated it applied to synthetic nitrogen fertiliser.

Virginia Serra, of DairyNZ, who is leading a five-year project to reduce nitrogen losses from dairy farms in the at risk Hinds and Selwyn water catchments, said that work to date had been looking for solutions for the whole farming system and the whole nitrogen cycle.

“To date we have focused on output, which is what is lost to the environment. With this new regulation we are forced to concentrate on one particular input – nitrogen.”

As well as applied nitrogen, the other main sources of nitrogen in pastoral farming were supplementary feed and nitrogen naturally fixed by legumes such as clover.

Nitrogen fertiliser was strongly correlated with nitrogen surplus and a higher nitrogen surplus was strongly correlated with nitrogen loss, Serra said.

“So while we would have preferred not to have this input control, it is taking us in the right direction.’

Farmers could drop nitrogen usage by about 20 per cent from higher rates of around 300kg/ha without major effect, but cutting the last 40kg from the average application rate of about 230kg/N/ ha down to the new cap “could be challenging”, Serra said.

Normally it would take two to three years to increase clover content in pasture, to offset the fall in nitrogen use, and to make other management changes.

“It is difficult to have a hard number with a biological system.”

Serra advised farmers to make half the cut this season and the other half from July 2021, to meet the nitrogen cap.

Farmers still needed to get clarity on whether fertiliser use was calculated over the total or effective farm area, how effluent and non-effluent areas would be considered, how nitrogen use on crops in the milking platform would be considered, and how the cap was going to be monitored, Serra said.

ACL Smallbone on the move

Ashburton is now home to one of the largest heavy vehicle workshops in the South Island.

Renowned local business, ACL Smallbone has now taken residence at the former Carrfields and Designline coach builders site, on Range Street, and have opened up a state-of-the-art new workshop to complement the relocation.

ACL chief executive Gary Casey said the business had acquired the site, and had spent close to $1 million creating a modern workshop space.

“We have tried to create a workshop that is incredibly user-friendly,” he said.

The space will be home to 22 mechanics, two parts staff and four support staff, combing the business’ two existing workshops into one location.

“We have focused a lot on health and safety and technology.”

There are two 25 metre long pits, one 25 metre long lifter, and two 11 metre long lifters.

“The days are gone of mechanics laying on their backs to do the job,” workshop manager Michael Johnston said.

The caucus met at 7pm, and by 9.30pm it was confirmed that Judith Collins would be the party’s new leader, with Gerry Brownlee taking up the role of deputy leader.

Falloon said following the news that he felt for Muller and his family.

“I know it would have been a hard call to make, but ultimately you need to consider your health and well-being,” Falloon said.

allowing them to also carry out on-site painting work on vehicles.

In May ACL Smallbone announced it would now be servicing the South Canterbury and Mid Canterbury regions for Scania – operating from two main locations, Timaru and Ashburton.

Last year Smallbone Timaru – an existing Scania service

dealer – merged with Ashburton contracting business, ACL, with a view to expansion.

They also Izuzu authorised repairers, meaning staff have undergone extensive training on that brand’s vehicles.

“Any mechanic can change oil, and stuff like that, but having it done by a factory-trained technician means things can be done much quicker,”

Johnston said.

The entire business will be shifted to the Range Street site, accommodating all areas of the business in the existing office space on-site.

Johnston said the move meant the business was still able to carry out the exact same jobs they had previously, only better, as well as adding a number of new services.

formers, we need to be utilising the talent that exists right across our caucus and proposing a strong alternative Government.”

Support of Collins on the Ashburton Guardian Facebook page was strong, earning 75 per cent of the votes in a poll between her, and Mark Mitchell, for who they would have preferred as the new leader of the party.

Commenters on the poll said Collins would bring experience, and that they hoped she is polite and respectful.

“Well, Jacinda (Ardern) has seen off three blokes, so had to be a woman,” another said.

“Judith all the way.”

Firefighters were chasing smoke in the countryside on Tuesday which turned out to have a natural explanation.

Members of the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade were called out shortly after 8pm on Tuesday evening, to the Winslow area, after a member of the public reported smoke blanketing a road.

Chief Fire Officer Alan Burgess said the substance covering the road actually turned out to be heavy fog.

“It was quite interesting as the road was clear but then, four-tofive metres down the road, there was this thick fog,” he said.

“They guys had a look around for smoke but couldn’t find anything.”

On Wednesday morning the brigade were called to a property on Elizabeth Street after a heating and light fixture overheated, and on Monday evening they were called to an alarm activation at RX Plastics.

On Monday evening the Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade were called to the Synlait factory, on the north side of the Rakaia River, alongside the Dunsandel Volunteer Fire Brigade.

Burrowes said it took a long time to investigate the cause of the false alarm, with crews on site for nearly two hours, with nothing being found.

Earlier that day they had been called to a medical event at around 9.20am, while the Ashburton brigade had also been called to a medical event, around 12.20pm.

In brief Children die in fire Several people have escaped a Christchurch house fire but two others died inside. Emergency services received multiple calls about the fire in the single-storey home in Burwood Tuesday night.

A fire spokesperson said they found two people dead inside.

They said several people were able to escape but he could not confirm how many. Neighbours told RNZ the two people who were found dead were children.

Police and fire crews remained at the scene yesterday. The cause of the blaze is yet to be determined.

Covid-19 cases There were two new cases of Covid-19 reported in New Zealand’s managed isolation facilities yesterday, Dr Ashley Bloomfield has confirmed. Health Minister Chris Hipkins and the Director-General of Health gave the latest Covid-19 update. The two new cases are a man in his 60s – arriving July 10 from Pakistan via Dubai – and a woman in her 50s, who came from Dublin via Dubai. Both are in managed isolation in Rotorua.

Methven has a bright future in the face of strong demand for real estate.

“Prices are as strong as I have ever seen them,” Ray White salesperson Margaret Feiss said.

“People love Methven, basically. Prices are strong, there’s no bargains in Methven, there’s not been for a long time really.”

Demand had increased over the last year, with the town’s attractions boosted by facilities such as local bike parks and the emerging skatepark and hot pools.

The fact that the Mt Hutt Ski

Area had opened for the winter, despite the worldwide pandemic, had also contributed to a boost in interest.

Feiss said this was exemplified by an open home she held shortly after lockdown. It was attended by as many as 19 different parties.

Interest in residential real estate had remained strong since, and increased even further since Mt Hutt had kicked off a highly successful 2020 ski season.

Interest was generally from Cantabrians with family connections in Methven, young people in Ashburton looking

to relocate, and people from Christchurch considering buying a holiday home. She had even received calls from people in the North Island thinking of moving to Methven.

The town was growing too, with sections at subdivisions selling well.

Only three sections remained at the 15-section Thyme Stream and there was strong interest in the exclusive Ranelagh development on Forest Drive.

Stage four at Camrose Estates, where there are already about 80 homes, had almost completely sold with only seven sections left, and strong interest

in stages five and six yet to be developed.

Bayleys Methven salesperson Rosa Dekker said there was strong confidence in residential real estate, however she did not think a surge in domestic tourism had affected the market as yet.

However, following lockdown there had been no slowdown by any means, and she was seeing a lot of buyers, particularly in the first-home buyers’ market.

Many were asking about the hot pools, set for completion next year, and it was one of the things people considered when they were buying and selling.

The Prime Minister has committed to doing everything possible to avoid putting the entire country back into lockdown, describing that as a “last resort”. Jacinda Ardern laid out Cabinet’s plan yesterday for what would happen if Covid-19 managed to slip through the border and break out in the community. Speaking at Parliament, she said if community cases emerged, the government would impose restrictions locally, or regionally in the first instance, rather than nationwide.

Cook Islands travel The Cook Islands government expects to confirm a “travel bridge” with New Zealand in the next week. The concept would allow people to travel between the two countries freely, and follows a meeting between Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and her counterpart Henry Puna on Tuesday night. Cook Islands Deputy Prime Minister Mark Brown says there’s a desperate need for tourism in the country.

No date has been set for the planned resumption of flights between the two countries.

School bus tendering

Top economist speaking at breakfast Mid Canterbury business owners and managers will have the chance to hear from one of New Zealand’s leading economic commentators this month, when Brad Olsen arrives in Ashburton as guest speaker at the district’s CEO Breakfast.

The council will be hosting the event at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre next Thursday, July 23, with places strictly limited to 100 people.

Hamish Riach said the CEO Breakfast will be a great opportunity for the local business community to get together and assess how the district is placed to recover from the economic impact of Covid-19.

“We are absolutely delighted to have Brad Olsen, from Infometrics, join us for this year’s event,” he said.

“Brad is one of the country’s leading economists and I’m sure he will have some very useful

insights to share about the New Zealand economy and, particularly, how our own district is positioned to recover in the months and years ahead.

“The coronavirus continues to raise many questions for local businesses, so coming together for this event will be a great chance to share ideas and take stock of the things we should be thinking about to aid our recovery.”

Bus companies are worried a new Ministry of Education plan for tendering school bus routes will annihilate medium-sized firms, particularly in the regions. It has been 12 years since companies got to compete for about $1.5 billion in school bus service contracts.

Individual bus companies declined to speak about the new tender system to RNZ on record, fearing it could harm their chances of getting a contract with the ministry. But Bus and Coach Association chief executive Pim Borren was not holding back. “[It’s] a cock-up actually, it’s just been a phenomenal cock-up.” The new tendering system is broken into two rounds – the first for small firms is already open, with larger firms to make their bids later in the year.

The soaring Southern Cross

A

s a nation capable of sending rockets into space, it can be hard for us to imagine New Zealand without flight.

It is safer and cheaper, generally, to fly domestically from one end of the country to the other rather than to drive the distance, and a lot of us have been comfortable with flying for as long as we can remember.

Once upon a time, the Tasman Sea posed a challenge for keen aviators who strove to bridge the gap between Australia and New Zealand by air.

An article from the Ashburton Guardian on January 26, 1928, mentions one attempt to fly across the Tasman by a Lieutenant Moncrieff and Captain G. Hood, who both “met an unknown fate in the attempt to fly over the Tasman Sea”.

Not long after this incident, on September 11 that year, a very special Fokker Trimotor, dubbed Southern Cross, made the first trans-Tasman flight, with legendary pilot Charles Kingsford Smith at the helm.

Braving the air The first successful trans-Tasman flight took careful planning and consideration, with particular attention paid to weather conditions between Australia and

New Zealand.

Numerous delays made the press and public anxious, with headlines in the Guardian reading “IN DOUBT” regarding Smith’s impending flight.

A special train service was arranged from Timaru to Christchurch and back on the day of the Cross’ arrival, and when the day finally came, the scene at Wigram was a sight to behold.

It took the Southern Cross nearly fourteen and a half hours to journey from Richmond, Australia to Wigram.

The Cross was met by four Bristol F2B fighter planes over Amberley, with Captain Maurice Buckley in the lead.

Frank McKechnie, from the Publicity Department, rode with Buckley and filmed the Southern Cross’ descent and arrival in New Zealand.

According to the Guardian, “a great murmur arose when, at 9.16am, the Southern Cross, looking like a giant between two Bristol fighters, loomed into view from the direction of Fendalton”.

“Dwarfing its escorting Bristol fighters, the splendid machine, squat-looking with its single plane and square fuselage, flew low over the crowd, once, twice, three times around the aerodrome.

“The crowd burst into a great cheer, hats flew into the air,

The Southern Cross landed at 9.22am, signalling the completion of the first trans-Tasman aeroplane flight.

“The weather, which had caused very much doubt and delay, made full atonement for its tardiness.”

A visit from the Cross On the afternoon of March 2, 1933, the Southern Cross landed at the Ashburton Airport after a flight from Levin, making Ashburton the Cross’ first South Island destination during that tour.

Over Rakaia, the Cross was met by two New Zealand Airways Spartans from Timaru as well as four Canterbury Aero Club planes, which all came down to land at Ashburton Airport while the Cross circled, at about 5.30 in the afternoon.

The Southern Cross then landed and taxied towards the hangar, escorted by two lines of the Ashburton Territorials who kept the eager crowd away from the propellers.

Charles Kingsford Smith was

given a grand welcome by the people of Ashburton, which he considered “the best they had so far encountered on the present tour”.

A guard of six men, supplied by the Ashburton Volunteers, watched the plane for the next few nights, as people came to inspect the Cross as late as 10pm and arrived as early as 5am.

Smith, his crew, and the passengers of the Southern Cross, attended a dance at His Majesty’s Theatre on the night of March 3, and were met with a fair attendance.

The Southern Cross left Ashburton on the afternoon of March 4, bound for Christchurch and escorted by two Moths from the Otago Aero Club.

An aviator’s legacy Charles Kingsford Smith is remembered as an accomplished aviation pioneer in Australia and New Zealand.

Smith’s trans-Pacific and trans-Tasman flights are still considered massive accomplishments in aviation.

Unfortunately, Charles Kingsford Smith met an untimely end at the age of 38, having vanished along with his co-pilot John Thompson Pethybridge during

an attempt to break the England-Australia speed record in November 1935.

The Southern Cross is housed at the Kingsford Smith Memorial at Brisbane airport.

The trans-Tasman crossing of the Southern Cross spurred much enthusiasm in New Zealand’s aviation field at the time, and can be credited with giving us the push we needed to more quickly advance our knowledge and use of aircraft.

What’s important?

S

ometimes sitting down and penning these words each day is a tough ask.

Unless there’s something juicy to sink the teeth into, it’s hard to know exactly what discussion is worth putting out there into the public sphere. Right now, there’s only a few things that seem to be taking precedence in the world of news.

Politics, inept politics, political decisions that baffle the mind, Covid-19, Covid-19 quarantine and the economic recovery from said Covid-19.

Growing a little tiresome, isn’t it?

Sometimes you just want a big juicy topic from far left field to fall onto the desk.

A story or an angle that jumps off the screen or the page and demands being debated.

They come, and they go – but they’re great when they are here.

One thing that is happening behind the scenes though, that is definitely worth putting into the public space, is the development of what your new-look Ashburton Guardian will look like come August when we shift to a three-day a week publication.

It’s a process we are not taking lightly. We know that every little decision we make on what might, or might not, be there when you open that first edition on August 5 will have an impact on how you view the paper going forward.

We’re deliberating on literally every little aspect – talking through the merits of having them there against the potential pitfalls if they’re not.

Will we get it right?

I’d like to think so, but I say that knowing full well that you’ll let us know if we don’t.

And that’s going to be the great thing about the new us.

It is your Ashburton Guardian, we’re just the custodians and if there’s something that’s not working, or something that is quite clearly missing, we’ll be more than welcoming to any feedback from you, our valued readers and advertisers, to help us through the decision making process.

What is certain though is that we know you’ll see the value in what you’re getting.

There was no playbook for responding to Covid-19, just as there was no playbook for responding to much of what has happened this term. That means we won’t always get it right, but we can make our own choices and adapt as we need to – and I’m proud of our record so far.

Going hard and early has put us in a good position. Now is the opportunity for our team of five million to build on that success.

So, as the Prime Minister urged, let’s keep up the momentum. Let’s keep rolling out our plan and rebuilding New Zealand better. Let’s keep moving.

Concern over shearing routines New Zealand’s traditional shearing routines could be thrown into disarray this summer if overseas shearers can’t get into the country.

The New Zealand Shearing Contractors Association said, nationally, at least two million sheep are shorn by international shearers.

The vice-president, Carolyn Clegg, said farmers may have to re-design their shearing plans to avoid animal welfare issues, and it could have business implications too.

She said some lambs may not get shorn, or ewes may just get crutched, rather than fully shorn.

Clegg said it is not just a matter of training up more New Zealanders.

It is not a “10 minute job” to learn how to shear, and it takes a few years to become experienced enough to shear 200 sheep a day, which is what the organisation is basing its shortfall figures on.

She said there is also not year- round work once they are trained.

“Even if we did have training, we only need people for a fixed term to cover the peak seasonal time so, if we trained say 115 New Zealanders, throughout the year we don’t need them . . . training just for a three-month period is not economically viable for anybody.”

Clegg said, even if shearers are permitted to come into New Zealand, their organisation is uncertain how many would take up the option, given the costs around sitting in quarantine not working, and more costly flights.

Clegg also admits the shearing body is mindful that asking for shearers to be allowed into New Zealand does pose a potential health risk.

days Society (NZNFS) president James Allan said it was exciting to finally launch the event but a rush of people signing in at noon crashed the system.

The agricultural event is normally held at Mystery Creek near Hamilton in June but because of Covid-19 it cancelled the live event and is instead running a twoweek online Fieldays.

“It was a disappointing way to start but systems were back up again within two hours and we are quietly confident everything will run smoothly from now on,” Allen said.

Allen said people who were online before noon did get to see the opening addresses, which included one from the Prince of Wales, who attended the Fieldays 50 years ago.

“There has been little negative response from exhibitors or those trying to visit the site,” he said.

During the opening ceremony Allen said it was 90 days ago the society had to pivot to an online event.

“If the farmers can’t come to the feildays, we will bring it to them.”

Earlier NZNFS chief executive Peter Nation said going online allowed them to reach a global audience, and claimed it was a “a world first for any agricultural event”.

The platform will host exhibitors’ sites, a series of webinars, live video and sales.

Fieldays Online will remain open until July 26.

Residential mortgage demand falls Property developments are going to struggle to get off the ground as bank lending tightens over the next six months.

The Reserve Bank has conducted a special, out of cycle, credit conditions survey to understand how lending practices have changed since lockdown.

It’s found the availability of commercial property loans was already constrained before the lockdown, but had since fallen to a net 38.4 per cent from 10.4 per cent.

Banks said they were cautious about lending due to the uncertainty surrounding depth and duration of the downturn, which has affected market confidence and pre-sales in residential property.

Infometrics senior economist Brad Olsen said the outlook isn’t likely to improve.

“We are going to see developers across the country struggle to get their projects moving, that is for commercial property and also for residential.

“That ability to access loans is going to come to a bit of a pinch point in the next few months you’d expect.”

Big and small businesses are

also expected to cut back on investment.

The survey found demand for business and commercial loans was strong, but the availability of credit could not meet demand.

Banks reported their main focus was to support existing customers who wanted cash on hand, with new clients being carefully scrutinised.

The survey also found low interest rates would not be enough to offset the economic impacts of Covid-19.

Demand for residential mortgage loans dropped by a net negative 24 per cent in June, from 8.3 per cent in March.

Banks have also tightened up on home loan lending, driving down the availability of mortgages.

The outlook isn’t bright either.

Banks expect demand and credit availability for home loans to remain in negative territory for the rest of the year, with one bank predicting a rise in mortgagee sales when the government’s financial assistance schemes begin to roll off.

Lockdowns easing market focus

S shares pushed higher last week, with the S&P 500 rising another 1.8 per cent, helped along by some positive news about vaccine progress.

The Nasdaq index rose 4 per cent to a new record, with Amazon, Netflix and Tesla all hitting fresh all-time highs.

The strongest US sectors were consumer discretionary (up 4.8 per cent), communication services (up 4.7 per cent) and technology (up 2.7 per cent), while energy (down 4.6 per cent), real estate (down 1.8 per cent) and industrials (down 1.4 per cent) were the weakest.

In contrast to the US, shares in New Zealand fell 1.4 per cent last week.

The Tiwai decision saw the electricity sector sold off, while Chorus (one of the top performers in 2020) also fell as news of potential regulatory changes caused some uncertainty.

The top NZX 50 movers last week were Metlifecare (up 11.9 per cent), Skellerup (up 11.8 per cent) and Summerset (up 6.2 per cent), while Contact Energy (down 16.1 per cent), Meridian Energy (down 8.7 per cent) and Air New Zealand (down 8.6 per cent) lagged.

Across the Tasman, the resurgence of virus cases saw risk sentiment turn cautious, sending the ASX 200 down 2.3 per cent for the week. Several public housing towers in Victoria were quarantined, and the border between Victoria and New South Wales closed.

The NZ dollar continued to rise against most other currencies, buoyed by some impressive local data points.

Outlook pointed to a steady recovery.

The gradual easing of lockdowns across the world will remain in focus this week.

Singapore is set to open movie theatres and hotels, and US banking heavyweight JP Morgan ready to let workers return to the office where daily health checks will occur. It’s more challenging elsewhere in the US, as re-openings are rolled back where cases are climbing again.

Miami has closed all beaches, as well as theatres and casinos.

The start of the quarterly global earnings season will be a highlight, with a number of high-profile companies set to announce results in the days ahead.

Investors will be eagerly anticipating results to see just how badly corporate profitability has been impacted by virus-related disruption.

Consensus estimates suggest the aggregate earnings decline for the S&P 500 will be down 44.6 per cent, relative to the same quarter a year ago. This would make for the largest fall in earnings since December 2008 (down 69.1 per cent).

All sectors are forecast to see earnings fall, with energy, consumer discretionary, industrials and financials expected to be hit hardest.

It’s a busy first week of reporting season with results due from PepsiCo, JP Morgan, Wells Fargo, Netflix and Johnson & Johnson.

Thursday afternoon will see a big

data dump out of China, including June quarter GDP. Today will be important for China watchers, as well as countries that trade with China (such as New Zealand and Australia).

A big data dump is due at 2pm, and June quarter gross domestic product (GDP) will be the highlight.

Markets are expecting a 2.3 per cent increase over the same period a year ago, which will follow the 6.8 per cent slump in GDP in the three months to the end of March.

That was the first contraction in the Chinese economy since at least 1992 (when official quarterly GDP records started).

Monthly activity indicators for June will be released at the same time, with expectations for an across the board improvement in these, compared with the relatively mixed levels we saw in May. In New Zealand, June quarter inflation figures are likely to be a highlight, while the latest housing market report will make interesting reading.

The June housing market report from the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ), was likely to be released on Tuesday.

National sales volumes rebounded strongly last month as the country moved out of level four, with the number of properties sold increasing 191 per cent from 1371 to 3990.

However, this remains 46.6 per cent down from the same month last year, so the Covid-19 lockdowns are still very much being felt across the market.

1/3 C golden syrup 200g butter 340g rolled oats 2T chopped mixed nuts 2T of mixed seeds (such as pumpkin and/or sunflower) 2T raisins ■■ Preheat the oven to 180°C. ■■ Butter a 23 x 33cm slice tin and line the base with baking parchment.

■■ Place the syrup and butter into a large saucepan and heat gently until the butter has melted into the syrup and stir well.

■■ Put the oats, nuts, ​and fruit into a baking bowl, add a pinch of salt then pour over the butter and syrup mixture and stir to coat the oats.

■■ Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and spread evenly to fill the tin, make sure the surface is even.

■■ Bake in the preheated oven

■■ Remove from the oven while the flapjack is still slightly soft, they will harden once cool.

Son edges dad to top Autocross

A father and son driver combo were the pick of the bunch at the Ashburton Car Club’s Grass Autocross event at the weekend.

However, it was the younger challenger who came up trumps during racing near Straveley on Sunday.

Fourteen-year-old Jack Winter, of the Central Otago Motor Club, secured top spot on his fourth and final run with a time of 1 minute 35 seconds.

His father, Phil, had to settle for runner-up honours, recording his best time on run three with 1 minute 40 seconds.

“When the student becomes the master, time to retire haha,”

Phil said, in a Facebook post, following the event.

He told the Guardian that this was his son’s third event since stepping up from grass karting.

Ashburton Car Club’s Scott Clark joined the pair on the podium courtesy of a fourth run time of 1 minute 48 seconds in his WRX. Fellow Subaru drivers Nathan

Clark and Tony Green also recorded sub-two minute times for the locals, coming in sixth and seventh place respectively.

Further back was Malcom Lovett in his Starion, his run four time of 2 minutes 3 seconds landed him 13th spot.

A total of 23 drivers competed throughout the day amid splendid conditions.

Breakers lure Tai Webster back into fold The Breakers have boosted their ranks for the Australian national basketball league season signing Tall Blacks point guard Tai Webster.

The 25-year-old younger brother of shooting guard Corey, Tai has been playing in Europe since finishing up in the US at the University of Nebraska in 2017.

His last two seasons have been at Turkish club Galatasaray and he had expected to return to Europe next season, but the global pandemic has forced him to rethink his plans.

Webster played for the Breakers as a teenager in 2013 when they won the title but said he has noticed big changes since then.

“There’s a huge difference. It’s been a long time since I have really been involved in the club like this and you can definitely see it’s come a long way and it’s continuing to get better every year and not only the Breakers but the league as a whole and it’s really getting respect worldwide.”

Webster’s signing means the Breakers have got an import quality player without having to use up an import spot and makes them genuine ANBL title contenders said coach Dan Shamir.

Shamir said with the reduction to two imports for each club signing Webster on a one-year deal is a major boost.

“I know for sure that every good team in the NBL tried to get Tai Webster during the last few years.”

“We have added a player who for sure would be a starter for any team in the ANBL and potentially one of the best players on any team and especially with the movement this year to two imports having a local player like (Tai) with his skillset and experience, it puts us one more step towards building a team that can be a contender,” said Shamir.

Breaker owner Matt Walsh said getting Webster on board is significant.

“With all other teams likely to be importing their point guards, we’ve secured the best Kiwi point guard in the world whose international class is undeniable.”

Walsh’s focus is now getting last season’s import and former NBA player, two metre tall US guard Scottie Hopson back.

Hopson was key to the side’s late season revival amid the departure of Glen Rice Jr who had a series of off-field issues.

“With just two imports allowed this season due to Covid, we will focus on getting Scottie’s signature and (that of) a seven-foot centre,” said Walsh.

“The fact we’re able to re-sign Tom Abercrombie, Finn Delany, Rob Loe, Jarrad Weeks, and now both Webster brothers is a really good sign we’re going in the right direction,” he said.

Tai Webster is looking forward to the prospect of playing alongside his brother Corey.

“It’s always going to be something special to be playing alongside my brother. To come together back to where it all started for us is something I’m looking forward to being part of.”

Having returned home because of coronavirus, Webster has been training with his Tall Blacks teammates at the Breakers facility for the past two months.

“It was awfully kind of the coaches even to let me come in every day and work out with them, so I was just grateful for that opportunity. That was something they didn’t have to do.”

The Breakers have also signed 27-year-old Australian small forward, Daniel Trist who is 204cm or 6’8” and who has had stints at both Melbourne United and South East Melbourne Phoenix.

The club is also bringing the University of North Carolina at Greensboro forward Kyrin Galloway to New Zealand on a threeyear deal, initially as a development player but will join the full roster in his second year.

Guardiola said the club’s reputation had been damaged by the furore around allegations that they broke Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules and fired back at comments from rival managers Jose Mourinho and Juergen Klopp.

Mourinho had described the CAS decision to fine City $17.3 million for non-co-operation with the investigation as “disgraceful”.

“Maybe. The thing about the money, maybe. But Jose and all the managers should know that we were damaged. We should be apologised (to). Because, like I said many times, if we did something wrong, we will accept absolutely the decisions by UEFA and CAS because we did something wrong,” Guardiola told a news conference yesterday.

“We have the right to defend ourselves when we believe what we have done is correct, is right.

Three independent judges said this,” the Spaniard added.

Liverpool manager Klopp had described the CAS verdict as “not a good day for football” but Guardiola disagreed.

“Yesterday was a good day for football because we play with the same rules of FFP as all the clubs in Europe. All of them.

(If ) we break this FFP, we will be banned,” he said.

“We were damaged. The people say that we cheated and lying many, many times. The presumption of innocence was not there and after, when it happened and it was right, of course we are incredibly happy because we can defend what we have done on the pitch.”

Guardiola also took aim at Spanish league president Javier Tebas, a long standing critic of City, who had questioned whether CAS was the right court for deciding such matters.

Out to continue momentum Two sides in Mid Canterbury’s premier netball competition have the opportunity to get a march on their rivals just three weeks into the competition tonight at the EA Networks Centre.

Celtic and Hampstead are the two undefeated teams after the opening two rounds of play – following contrasting victories last week on the court. Hampstead dished out a dominant display against Methven while Celtic picked up easy points when they were defaulted to by Mt Somers.

Tonight, both sides have the opportunity to go three from three, which would put them in strong positions pointing towards the business end of the season, if they’re able to get over the line.

Methven and Celtic will lock horns in the opening match of the night on the main court.

Celtic opened their season strongly with success over College, but if there is a concern it’s last week’s missed game. Methven started in a similar fashion with a strong win, but were humbled last week by Hampstead which will have had them scrambling through their processes this week in training.

Hampstead will play one half of the role in what should be the match of the night when they take on College in the second game of the evening.

A draw last week to United came as a bit of a shock for most College followers and they’ll be keen to right that wrong, although they will face a powerful force in the blue and golds in their bid to bounce back.

Mt Somers were missing in action last week, but are a force to be reckoned with when they hit the court in the right mindset and United will be more than cautious of the threat they can pose, especially if they are able to start in a strong manner.

Homesick Warriors heading home The Warriors have confirmed the homesick quartet of David Fusitu’a, Ken Maumalo, Agnatius Paasi and King Vuniyayawa have been booked to fly home on July 27 to be reunited with their families.

The players had originally committed to stay in Australia only until Sunday’s match against Cronulla-Sutherland, unless the NRL succeeded in its efforts to secure travel exemptions for their families to enter Australia.

Due to the unavailability of flights, the four players will now remain with the team another week, until after the encounter with the Sydney Roosters on July 25.

Warriors chief executive Cameron George said Fusitu’a, Maumalo, Paasi and Vuniyayawa had the total support of the players, staff and the club.

“We can’t say enough about the sacrifice they have made being away from their families so long,” he said.

“We fully understand the pre-

dicament they have been in and we’re so appreciative of what they have done in committing to the cause for as long as they have.

“When we travelled to Australia we promised the players everything possible in our control would be done to secure travel exemptions for their families to join them there.

“Ultimately the decision lies with government agencies to approve the applications the NRL made on our behalf.”

Rugby League Players’ Association chief executive Clint Newton commended the returning players and thanked Warriors management for their commitment to working through the process.

On arriving home, the players will be required to go into isolation for 14 days before they can finally see their families next month.

George said consideration was now being given to how best to replace the returning players in the squad.

Skipper chooses camping over A-League Perth Glory captain and star midfielder Diego Castro has opted out of the remainder of the A-League season, citing an “unacceptable health risk” as Australia battles fresh outbreaks of Covid-19, and has gone touring in a campervan with his family.

The 38-year-old Spaniard declined to join his team mates in a New South Wales hub ahead of Friday’s restart of the A-League which was shut down in March, the Glory said.

A-League broadcaster Fox Sports reported that Castro was touring Western Australia state in a campervan with his family and had not been in contact with the club for some time.

“The Glory skipper informed the club that he viewed his participation to be an unacceptable health risk for him and/or his family,” the Tony Popovic-coached Glory said in a statement.

The loss of playmaker Castro, who won the Johnny Warren Medal as the league’s best player in 2015/16, is a huge blow for Glory, who sit fifth in the league with six regular season matches before the playoffs.

They had already lost two defenders in Swiss international Gregory Wuthrich and Korean Kim Soo-Beom, who returned home during the league’s shutdown and have not returned.

“Obviously we’re very disap-

pointed to have lost a player and leader of Diego’s quality,” said Glory football director Jacob Burns.

Castro is hardly alone in opting out of the A-League, with Western United midfielder Panagiotis Kone, a former Greece international, heading home to Europe with a year left on his contract.

Melbourne City confirmed on Tuesday that Spanish forward Markel Susaeta had also left the club to return home to Spain to be with his family.

The A-League relocated three Melbourne clubs out of the southern state of Victoria to neighbouring NSW over the weekend after an outbreak of Covid-19 in the southern city.

Kahui still a force to be reckoned with Former All Blacks midfielder Richard Kahui is making a return to Super Rugby, signing with the Western Force to play in the Australian edition of the revamped competition.

The 35-year-old Rugby World Cup winner has spent the past seven years playing in Japan’s Top League side Toshiba.

Kahui has already completed his two-week quarantine period and is now training with the Western Force squad.

Kahui played 18 tests for the All Blacks, including the 2011 World Cup final win over France in Auckland – starting on the wing, however his playing career in New Zealand was blighted by injury.

He was also part of the Chiefs’ 2012 Super Rugby title-winning campaign and

joins another former All Black, lock Jeremy Thrush, at the Perth-based franchise.

Western Force Head of Rugby Matt Hodgson said the addition of Kahui adds a wealth of experience to the squad.

“With 68 Super Rugby caps and a number of domestic and international honours to his name, Kahui is another quality signing for us,” Hodgson said.

“His knowledge of the game, defensive ability and the level of professionalism he brings to training will be huge for our season, we can’t wait to see him out there in the blue and black.

“It’s not just his on-field exploits that we’re excited about, as his insight and winning mentality are sure to prove invaluable for the entire team.”

BRADLEY, Brian Patrick – Peacefully at his home on July 13, 2020, after a courageous battle, aged 67 years. Dearly loved husband of the late Margaret. Loving father and father-in-law of Kieran and Melissa, Nikki and Ross, adored Grandad of Jethro and Lincoln. Loved son of the late Glenis and Terance, loved son-in-law of Esmè, and the late Keith Smith. Loved brother and brother-in-law of Bernard and Diane, Kevin and Marlene.

Loved uncle of Richard, and Philip. A service to celebrate Brian’s life is to be held at our Chapel, cnr East and Cox streets, Ashburton, on SATURDAY, July 18, commencing at 11am followed by private cremation.

In lieu of flowers donations to St John Ambulance and Cancer Society would be gratefully accepted and may be left at the service.

Two close finishes, one blowout result.

That is how one may sum up a fascinating weekend of senior B rugby at the weekend.

Allenton’s scored late to break the hearts of Celtic 33-31 at Allenton on Saturday after the visitors notched up a 19-12 lead at the

break. It was the third win on the bounce for the club following an opening round loss to Methven.

With the bye this weekend, Allenton now sit third on the senior B ladder behind Mt Somers and competition leaders Methven.

Celtic fell to its third loss of the season after it hit form last week against Rakaia.

The green machine take on

Southern senior B this weekend, Southern were hammered 78-7 by a rampant Methven side at Hinds – a far cry from the cut-throat nature of the senior game that followed.

Methven are well placed as Michael Duff Memorial Trophy frontrunners and host a winless Rakaia this weekend.

point loss of the competition, pipped 14-12 by Mt Somers at home.

They lost by the same margin to Collegiate two weeks earlier and now sit second from bottom in the standings.
