House prices in the Ashburton District are now surging at a faster rate than any other area in Canterbury.

In the year to June 30, the average price of a house sold in the Ashburton District rose by 8.8 per cent. The Canterbury/Westland average was 1.7 per cent.

The climb in house prices, however, has been steady over the past 12 months, with no movement from May to June.

Ashburton’s median price is now $367,500; this time last year it was $336,250 and for first-home buyers that has pushed the amount needed for a 20 per cent deposit up by $6000.

Sales volumes across Canterbury rose by 19 per cent over the year, but in Ashburton the increase in the number of houses sold was significantly higher, up 56 per cent to 50 for the month. The median number of days it took to sell a house was steady on 32.

That house prices had climbed by almost 9 per cent over a year was no surprise said Ray White franchisee Jill Quaid.

“We’re a pretty stable market and that steady increase has been driven by good numbers of firsthome buyers in the market and good top end properties that have sold over the past year,” she said.

“It helps the median price that

we’ve got good lending rates at the moment and even if these move a little I don’t think we’ll see much change.”

The current market was typical of mid-winter, she said, with buyer demand outstripping the number of listings.

“The winter is actually a good time to list your property, there’s less competition and there are still the same number of buyers out there as there are in the summer.”

If a property had a good heating system, there were real advantages in the winter, she said.

Looking ahead, Mrs Quaid said it would be interesting to watch the impact of new compliance costs on the investment market.

While investors who had a portfolio of properties might deal with these by passing on costs to tenants, the mum and dad investor with a single property might find the extra costs a deterrent to investing.

“The investor market is currently ticking along nicely and if the mum and dad investors pull back, it might help the first-home buyers,” she said. “It won’t alter the market overall.”

Industry commentator Jim Davis said that demand for properties was strong across Canterbury with considerable investor interest from the North Island, looking for value properties outside of the main centres.

Talented artists give their time to fundraiser

Eleven Mid Canterbury artists have devoted their talent to this year’s Busted fundraiser for the Mid Canterbury Cancer Society.

All but one of the busts this year have been taken from mannequins, with the only life-size bust that of Mid Canterbury senior

rugby captain Jon Dampney.

They will be auctioned off next month.

Busted Mid Canterbury organiser Carol Johns said the bust campaign two years ago raised around $10,000 for the cancer society.

Funds raised would again be used on Mid Canterbury projects.

She said the move to use man-

nequins was to include a wider group of potential bidders. “Our 2014 real-life models got quite attached to their busts and felt like they had to buy them.”

She said the artists had used different techniques to decorate their busts, which are currently on display in the Somerset Grocer.

People can place an early si-

lent bid there, or by going to the Busted Mid Canterbury Facebook page; the highest bid will be the starting bid on auction night.

The artists include Ana Krakosky, Tonee Hurley, Tina Yeatman, Sandy Donlan, Debbie Lambert, Cheryl Irwin, Colin Hunt, Carmen Lye, Libby Handy, Laura McKenzie and K. Racker.

Four New Zealanders, including Mid Canterbury’s own Brooke Sandys and Jack Bubb, have made it to the list of finalists in the World Championships of Performing Arts in Hollywood.

Mid Canterbury has four performing artists at the champs, where they have put on a fantastic showing.

Jack, 15, will compete in the junior singing, and Brooke, 18, in the senior acting, alongside other actors, singers, dancers and models from around the world.

The event is being held in Los Angeles.

Anyone wanting to watch the finals can tune in to a live global webcast about 2pm on Saturday at the World Championships of Performing Arts website wcopa.com.

Kirsty’s death ‘not an accident’

For 15 years, Kirsty Bentley was just another Ashburton teenager, loved by her family and friends, living the kind of life teenagers do in a rural town.

But that changed as 1998 became 1999; she disappeared, a massive search was mounted and her body was found two weeks later, one day before her 16th birthday, in bushes in an area of the Rakaia Gorge known as Camp Gully.

Her death tore her family apart, it struck at the heart of the Ashburton community and it left police struggling to find answers.

In the 18 years since, in spite of

an exhaustive investigation, and a pathologist’s finding that she died from a blow to the head, no one has been charged with her murder.

Yesterday in the Christchurch Coroner’s Court while no answers were given, coroner Peter Ryan’s ruling was made that her death was not the result of an accident.

On a recording, provided by Radio New Zealand to the Guardian, Mr Ryan said that while hundreds of people had been interviewed by police and extensive inquiries conducted, the identity of the person or person’s responsible for her death were unknown.

“I am satisfied on the evidence produced that Kirsty died on De-

cember 31 1998 at an unknown location, but likely to be in the Ashburton or Rakaia areas,” he said.

Mr Ryan also stated that he was satisfied on evidence produced that the cause of death was a large and complex fracture of the skull.

“I am satisfied this was not the result of an accident such as Kirsty falling and hitting her head. Evidence shows those injuries were inflicted on her.”

Mr Ryan said he had to make an open finding on two questions – where she died and who was responsible for her death.

He extended his condolences to Kirsty’s family on their loss and the “particularly horrific” way Kirsty died.

He also commended police for the extent of their investigation and also for keeping Kirsty’s death as an on-going investigation.

“For the family’s sake and the sake of society I trust that one day the person or persons responsible will be brought to account.”

Kirsty disappeared on New Year’s eve 1998 while walking her dog along the Ashburton River and while police interviewed more than 100 people in the weeks and months afterwards they were unable to make an arrest. In the years since Kirsty’s murder, her mother Jill moved away from Ashburton and last year her father Sid died.

Her brother John is believed to be living overseas.

Children’s Theatre cast chosen More than 90 of the Ashburton District’s brightest rising stage stars are about to start the serious business of rehearsing for their next productions, Cinderella and Xanadu.

After a full day of auditions, production secretary Bridget Danielson said both shows were cast and the young Children’s Theatre actors, ranging in age from seven to 17 were looking forward to starting the task of learning their lines, songs and dance routines.

The shows open on September 30, with a matinee and evening performance on Saturday and a matinee on Sunday.

On top of the world at Mt Hutt Skifield On top of the world: Mt Hutt Skifield was bathed in sunshine yesterday, despite a windy start to the day. Fun was on the agenda with a bouncy castle, face painting and a colouring-in competition. The skifield will host Air New Zealand representatives today, up on the mountain as part of their Meanwhile in New Zealand campaign – and they’ll be giving away free ice-cream.

Some 10cm of snow fell on the mountain from 3am yesterday and more is in the stars tomorrow. Main trails were well used, with skiers and riders finding pockets of fresh snow off piste.

Managing new entrants’ anxiety

Helping your anxious child start school will be one of the topics covered in a free workshop for parents and teachers in Ashburton at the end of the month.

The understanding and managing children’s anxiety workshop is being provided free by the Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association and will be run by Catherine Gallagher of the Mental Health Education and Resource Centre in Christchurch.

Longbeach School principal Neil Simons said the evening was aimed at primary school children though anxiety and stress affected older students too.

The Mental Health Education and Resource Centre has been supporting people in Canterbury for over 21 years and has a free public library with items covering topics such as raising teenagers, working with difficult people, anxiety, depression and wellbeing.

The two-hour workshop will be held in the Ashburton College auditorium on July 25, starting at 6pm.

House of Year success Ashburton has scored two gold awards in this year’s Mid-South Canterbury House of the Year competition.

Smith and Sons won gold in the renovation up to $250,000 property while Fowler Homes Ltd earned itself a gold award in the new home, $400,000 to $500,000 category.

Across all categories there were 10 gold award winners and these will now be judged against gold award winners from around the country to find the national gold reserve finalists.

The honours were handed out in a ceremony in Ashburton last night.

Kiwi teen two blocks from France attacks

A 19-year-old Kiwi student is in France two blocks away from where a truck ploughed into a crowd killing 77 people celebrating Bastille Day on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice during a fireworks display.

Alice Houghton is in her Nice hotel in lockdown.

The teenager is on a university exchange and is travelling Europe on a Contiki Tour before her semester starts.

“We were on our way home

from dinner in Monaco and were driving into Nice when reports started coming in.”

She said they were quickly ushered off their bus and into their hotel. “[We] didn’t really know what was going on. Most phone lines are blocked because so many people are calling and wifi is slow so we are getting drip fed info.”

Houghton said New Zealand media were “much more on to it than French media”.

She said there were “many panicked people” in the hotel.

“We could hear what we thought were gunshots although we thought they might be fireworks. It’s Bastille Day which is such a shame. As a New Zealander it’s a horrible feeling to experience as it is so alien.”

She said she wasn’t on the promenade when the truck ploughed through. “We got back just at the end of it ... As far as I’m aware we were two blocks away.”

The teen marked herself as safe via a Facebook checking-in system that activates following a disaster.

CHECKING UP ON KIWIS The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade was yesterday liaising with French officials to see if any New Zealanders had been injured or killed in yesterday’s attack.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade is aware of the incident where a truck crashed into a large crowd attending a Bastille Day event in Nice, France.

“The New Zealand Embassy in Paris is liaising with the local authorities to ascertain whether any New Zealanders have been harmed in the incident,” said a spokesperson.

There are 882 New Zealanders registered with the ministry as being in France.

Age Concern welcomes ACC boost

Age Concern is welcoming a $30.5 million boost across four years in fall prevention funding from ACC. The group has many branches across New Zealand and they provide a number of valuable services to the elderly community.

Ashburton Age Concern provides one such service called Steady as You Go (SAYGo) classes.

SAYGo is a fall prevention class that helps manage the risk of falling through simple exercises while seated, standing or walking.

The activity improves balance, flexibility and strength and this is the fourth year SAYGo has run in Ashburton.

Class members also benefit from the added socialisation they get from attending.

There are nine classes a week and each have between 15 to 18 people who come along.

Age Concern Ashburton president Trish Small said the funding originally comes from the Ministry of Health and they have very stringent evaluations to justify the funding.

She said she hopes the ACC boost will flow through to them as well.

“I’m delighted that ACC have decided to take the preventative approach to this nationwide programme,” Mrs Small said.

Ashburton Age Concern also receive some funding from the Ashburton County Lions club.

Age Concern CEO Stephanie Clare said on Wednesday they were extremely pleased to hear about the boost. She said it was important that programmes like SAYGo get the support they need.

The ACC funding will be split into several categories, including classes like SAYGo and other areas like fracture liaison, in-home hazard review and medication reviews.

Paul Robinson has gone from afterschool boy to boss at PlaceMakers Ashburton.

The progression has taken 24 years and this month he took over the office formerly occupied by one of the business’ founders, John Cockburn.

Paul, who started after school on April 30, 1992, said his jobs back then were sweeping the shop, yard and doing the filing.

The business was set up by Mr Cockburn and Jim Allen 40 years ago and traded as Fletcher Merchants until 1982.

At the end of his sixth form year, they asked him to stay permanently and his first job was to paint the entire shop. It was a big job and involved moving and re-stacking every product in the shop, but it gave him first-hand knowledge of everything PlaceMakers sold.

“It was a good job to learn about all the products, which I endeavoured to do.”

In 2001 he became a sales rep, covering a massive patch of territory from the mountains to the sea. He also developed his skills by completing a diploma in business management and industry papers through polytech.

He stayed on the road until six months ago, when the opportunity arose to take over the business.

He has watched the Mid Canterbury landscape change. “There are a lot of shelterbelts missing, a lot more cows, and everything’s a lot greener. I remem-

ber when Lake Hood was just a hole in the ground.”

Farmers on board with plans Almost 600 Ashburton farmers have created a plan to understand and mitigate the environmental risks of their farms.

The number comes as Environment Canterbury announce more than 2000 of the 5000 Canterbury farms have completed their Farm Environment Plans (FEPs).

Farm Environment Plans are a requirement under the Canterbury Land and Water Regional Plan to ensure farmers are thinking about the impact of their farm on the environment and taking measures to mitigate any such risks.

The FEPs cover a wide range of activities including water use efficiency, nutrient management, effluent management, soil management and hotspots such as waste pits, offal or silage pits.

Each Farm Environment Plan must be independently audited which assesses whether the farmer is doing what they said they would and whether the onfarm practices address the environmental risks on that property.

The farmer is then graded A, B (on track) or C, D (not on track).

Farmers who receive two consecutive C or D grades are highly likely to face compliance action from Environment Canterbury (an abatement notice, infringement and fine, or even prosecution) or from their irrigation scheme. If a farmer fails to make the necessary improvements it

Ashburton irrigation schemes are ensuring their farmers are getting on board with the farm environment plans.

Rangitata Diversion Race Management Ltd (RDRML) have completed farm environment plans

for all 372 properties managed under their programme. Already 28 farms have been audited with a further 100 farms to be audited in the 2016/17 irrigation season.

Barrhill-Chertsey and Acton Farmers irrigation schemes have completed more than 170 FEPs and audited at least 90 of those.

All remaining scheme farms will be audited in the next 12 months.

Meanwhile, DairyNZ has been assisting around 40 independent dairy farmers in the red and orange zone to get their FEPs, otherwise known as a Sustainable Milk Plan, finished.

A DairyNZ spokesperson said its focus had been to support Ashburton orange zone farmers meet their consenting requirements and it will now be focus-

sing on red zoned dairy farms.

DairyNZ expects all dairy farms in the Ashburton zone to have a Sustainable Milk Plan/ Farm Environment Plan by 31 May 2017.

Any dairy farmer who wanted help with their Sustainable Milk Plan could contact DairyNZ catchment engagement leader Angela Harvey.

Courageous decision expected Note from the Ashburton Water to improve water quality The Ashburton Water Zone Committee is being labelled “courageous” in its decision to move forward with New Zealand’s first catchment-scale Managed Aquifer Recharge pilot.

Canterbury District Health Board medical officer of health Alistair Humphrey recognised the effort the Ashburton Water Zone Committee had put into moving forward with the Hinds/Hekeao Managed Aquifer Recharge Pilot project.

“It’s a courageous zone committee that has decided on this project and we are confident that the level of nitrate will rapidly begin to fall in our water,” Alistair said.

The CDHB will be monitoring levels of nitrate in Ashburton water to see the effects of MAR on ground water.

“I’m convinced it will work but we need to see how well it works.

The question is how effective it will be in the long term,” Alistair said.

Central South Island Fish and Game spokesperson Mark Webb said the organisation was very interested in the results of the pilot project.

“The MAR project certainly has some pretty far reaching positive benefits if it works in terms of improving the environmental conditions in the lower Hinds

The Hinds/Hekeau Managed Aquifer Recharge site. area,” he said.

Ashburton Water Zone Committee member Gordon Guthrie said the opening of the MAR pilot was a long time coming.

“The neat part of [the MAR pilot] is having the whole community working together,” Gordon said.

“The farmers themselves recognise that there’s an issue that needs to be addressed and are

working with all these solutions to try to come up with the right outcome.”

The pilot project is initially for one year, but has consent to continue until 2021 if required.

“What does success look like?

It’s getting life back into these streams more often so they’re not going dry and getting nitrate levels [down] to a level that’s acceptable,” Gordon said.

At our meeting last month it was brought to our attention that many people don’t know what the zone committee is or what we do.

The Ashburton Water Zone Committee was established in 2010 as part of the collaborative approach to water management through the Canterbury Water Management Strategy (CWMS).

It’s made up of members from Environment Canterbury, Ashburton District Council, the local runanga and the Ashburton community. Our role on the committee requires us to put aside our own personal interests to focus on understanding all perspectives in water management.

At its inception, the Ashburton Water Zone Committee was charged with working with the community and interest groups to establish key priorities for water management in the Ashburton zone.

Working from these priorities, the committee makes recommendations to Environment Canterbury about how to achieve those outcomes.

For example, one of the water management priorities was improved drinking water.

The zone committee recom-

mended to Environment Canterbury that in order to achieve this, actions such as setting new nitrogen limits, requiring Farm Environment Plans (FEPs) and putting in place projects such as the Managed Aquifer Recharge project was a way to do that.

Turning these recommendations into action requires a commitment from the community, Environment Canterbury, Ashburton District Council, industry groups and other organisations.

It’s this way of working together that encourages creative thinking and gets things done.

Some of these zone committee recommendations have influenced Environment Canterbury’s rules. However, it’s important to note the zone committee is not involved in the processing or monitoring of consents.

Our monthly meetings are a forum where we can hear from the community and experts about water management in the Ashburton area. It is a great opportunity to learn more about water in this area and we would love to see you there.

Jail time for drug-smuggling body builder

A personal trainer who smuggled 1.5kg of meth into Wellington Airport inside two neck pillows said he thought he was carrying a drug he used for body building.

Former Les Mills trainer Yoram Kalev, 48, appeared at the Wellington District Court yesterday.

He was sentenced to six years and 10 months in prison for possessing and importing methamphetamine.

On January 19 this year, Kalev, an Australian living in New Zealand, arrived into Wellington Airport via Sydney after a trip from Hong Kong, and was stopped by customs.

During the search, two neck pillows with about 1.46kg of meth inside was found, the court heard.

It had a street value of $1,466,000.

His lawyer Letizea Ord said the man had carried what he had thought was ephedrine into the country. From September 2011

ephedrine was categorised as a controlled drug and may only be prescribed by a doctor.

“Unfortunately he was persuaded against his better judgment,” Ord said. “He wasn’t thinking clearly and was persuaded to take two neck pillows back to Wellington.”

Kalev was a personal trainer at Les Mills gym at the time and also competed in body building competitions.

Kalev admitted he used steroids and ephedrine for muscle building as a body builder.

Kalev’s days as a bodybuilder were over and he would never use steroids or ephedrine again, Ord said.

Judge Denys Barry acknowledged he had shown “real remorse” and accepted responsibility for his actions.

“You were a mule or a courier, rather than a mastermind and you made a misjudgment agreeing to carry this stuff through and you thought it was ephedrine,” he said.

Pokemon 101: What is Pokemon Go? W

ith the surging popularity of Pokémon Go, the Pokémon world is at the forefront of pop culture and not for the first time.

The Pokémon universe began in 1996 with two games for the then new Nintendo Game Boy. From there, it grew into video games, trading card games, animated television shows and movies, comic books, toys and the mobile game, Pokémon Go. It is the second most lucrative franchise in the world, following the Mario series.

But what is it about these little creatures that keeps drawing in the crowds? And what exactly are they?

Pokémon is a media franchise, which centres on fictional creatures called Pokémon.

The word Pokémon comes from contracting the name of the Japanese brand Pocket Monsters (Poketto Monsuta.)

The most popular part of the franchise are the video games for Nintendo handheld consoles.

On the handheld consoles, Pokémon is a third-person roleplaying, adventure game with the overarching storyline of becoming a master Pokémon trainer.

With the popularity of Pokémon Go skyrocketing, what is it about these little pocket monsters that keeps drawing people in? son role-playing, adventure game, but does not have an obvious overarching storyline.

Before the release of Pokémon Go, players would have to buy a either a Game Boy or a Nintendo DS, depending on which game they wanted to play.

Games were sold as external cartridges that were plugged into the bottom of the console, so it was possible to buy multiple cartridges and swap them around.

Pokémon Go requires the player to have a Google account to register for the game.

Once a player has the game, they are required to customise an avatar and a nickname, which represents them throughout gameplay.

Why is Pokémon so popular?

It’s the thrill of the chase. The franchise’s slogan is ‘Gotta catch ‘em all’ and players of the original two games might not have too much of an issue with that, seeing as there were only 151 to catch.

Over the years however, more

and more of the little pocket monsters were added to the universe.

There are now 729 official Pokémon spread across the universe.

In the first five games and in Pokémon Go, there is a choice of three ‘starter’ Pokémon; Bulbasaur, a grass type that resembles an upside down plant bulb; Squirtle, a water type that resembles a blue turtle and Charmander, a fire type that resembles a small lizard with a flame on the end of its tail.

In the other games, the player is given a choice of different Pokémon but all games give the player the choice of either a grass, water or fire type.

In addition to the three starting Pokémon, there are 15 other ‘types’ of Pokémon.

Once the player starts collecting Pokémon, they can train them to compete in battles and become a Pokémon master.

Since the launch of Pokémon Go, the thrill of the chase has entered the real world, kind of.

All the basic elements of Pokémon games of the past are still there, collect Pokémon, train Pokémon, battle Pokémon and become a Pokémon master.

However, the app relies on the GPS, camera and clock in a smartphone, meaning the app knows where and when you are in the game and will make Pokémon ‘appear’ in front of the user.

Meaning, in order to achieve the goals of catching all the Pokémon and becoming a Pokémon master, players have been going outside in search of Pokémon, gyms to train and battle at and PokéStops, a new addition exclusive to Pokémon Go where players can collect PokéBalls, the device used to capture the Pokémon.

Despite its major popularity, Pokémon Go is not without its controversies.

The game has only been released in New Zealand, Australia, The United States and Germany yet there has already been some

major controversy both in the app itself and from people’s experiences while using it.

Due to the high traffic, the app often experiences server crashes and countless websites have cropped up focused solely on keeping players updated on the status of the server.

In the real world, there have been a few incidents, good and bad, while people have been Pokémon hunting.

In the United States, a woman was looking for a water type Pokémon near a river, where she found a dead body.

In the game, churches are often used as gyms, and in the United States, the controversial Westboro Baptist Church was in the hands of a player who used the pink Clefairy to take it over.

Pokémon has been a staple of pop culture for 20 years and with the introduction of Pokémon Go, it shows no sign of slowing down.

As long as the servers stay up, that is.

Heather’s 2400km walk for refugees Former Ashburtonian Heather Holdaway will spent three months on a solo trek across Europe to raise funds and increase awareness about the plight of Syrian refugees. She talks to Guardian reporter Michelle Nelson about her cause.

A

former Ashburton College student plans to embark on an epic journey to raise awareness of the plight of Syrian refugees.

Heather Holdaway will spend three months walking a historic St James Camino trail – a 2400km solo journey across Europe.

En-route she hopes to raise $500 to support the work of the International Rescue Committee (IRC).

Heather, who left Ashburton to study at Wellington’s Victoria University in 2012, has spent the past year studying political science in Konstanz, Germany – a small city on the Swiss border.

She will finish at the end of July and plans to set off on her threemonth hike early in August.

While Konstanz has been largely unaffected by the European refugee crisis, Heather felt compelled to do something to support women threatened by sexual and gender-based violence fleeing the Syrian conflict and beyond.

“From the little I’ve seen, Konstanz being a southern city hasn’t received an influx of refugees such as say Cologne or Berlin has, civilians fleeing their homes, jobs and day-to-day from a war that has nothing to do with them presents a pretty compelling case to try and help out a little.”

The Syrian conflict has lasted for more than four years, forcing an estimated 4.8 million civilians to flee for their lives. However, for many, this is just the first step in a long struggle to survive and live with dignity. For women leading their families or fleeing solo, sexual violence within these camps is pervasive, exploitative and on the rise.

tation. Consequently, women frequently go days without food or water, avoid running the gauntlet in dangerous camp bathrooms and opt to sleep outside rather than share shelter with strangers.

Forced acts of transactional sex are also on the rise.

“I feel, despite Germany being extremely welcoming, prejudices remain and it’s important to realise that no-one wants to be, quite literally, bombed out of their home.”

Following some research Heather felt the IRC’s mandate to prevent sexual and gender-based violence, with an emphasis on refugee aid and international

women’s rights, was an ideal fit.

“I just flicked them an email letting them know of my intentions and if they wanted to get behind it – and they did; one free t-shirt later and a bit of correspondence with their London office and here we are.”

Although her previous tramping experience is limited to the Woolshed Creek walkway, she is undeterred by the prospect of the journey ahead of her.

The Camino consists of a group of tracks across Europe which lead to the Cathedral of St James in Santiago de Compostela. The best known of these is the Camino Frances, an 800km

stretch from the Pyrenees across Spain and featured in many films and documentaries.

Heather’s decision to walk the Camino was influenced by the fact that one of the trails passes by her current home.

“In Konstanz, the Camino track called the Jakobsweg leads to Geneva, from there, you can jump on again via Gebennensis from Geneva to Le-Puy en-Velay in France. From there you walk via Podiensis to Saint Jean Pied de Port and finally from there, you walk the Camino Frances to Santiago de Compostela.

“So it’ll be 2400km in total. If I’m honest, the length and time

it’ll take was definitely the deciding factor – I watched Martin Sheen’s character walk Camino Frances in the movie The Way, and kinda felt like, this guy who is potentially left his prime behind sometime in the 90s is trudging along quite happily, so I think I’ll take a bigger bite, you know.”

Kiwis stumble in first round New Zealand’s top golfers Danny Lee and Steven Alker have struggled in the first round of the British Open at Royal Troon.

One-under after nine holes, Danny Lee blew out to seven-over par with Alker carding a two-over 73.

Lee sits in a tie for 149th with just three golfers sitting behind him on the leaderboard.

Phil Mickelson took early command of the tournament with a spectacular record-equalling firstround 63.

Mickelson – the 2013 Open winner – lipped out for birdie on the final hole just as he seemed poised to record the lowest round in major championship history. His

magical eight-under display was still a course record and matched the best-ever score at a major.

The five-times major champion enjoys a three-stroke advantage over countryman Patrick Reed, with fellow Americans Justin Thomas, Steve Stricker, Tony Finau and Billy Horschel among a bunch of players a further shot back.

Englishman Andy Sullivan and Soren Kjeldsen also carded 67s, but the day undoubtedly belonged to Mickelson, who was flawless in his eight-birdie round.

The back nine at Troon is one of the toughest homeward stretches on the Open rota, but the flamboyant left-hander made a mockery of

its beastly reputation with just 31 shots after the turn.

Bidding to become the oldest Open winner since Old Tom Morris in 1867, the 46-year-old said only his final-round 66 to seal victory three years ago could top his first-round effort.

Americans have provided the past six Open winners at Troon, stretching back to Arnold Palmer in 1962 and are once again threatening to continue the 54-year streak.

Mickelson’s brilliance has left Jason Day facing a mountain to climb to work his way back into the tournament after Australia’s world No.1 disappointed with a two-over 73.

Hanging up the boots

After 27 years, five clubs and more tackles than he cares to remember, Mid Canterbury United’s Doug Gardner will hang up his boots at the end of the season.

The stalwart fullback played a key role in Mid Canterbury’s league campaign, and almost added another title to his medal haul on the final day of the season last weekend.

United eventually fell short on goal difference as the Coastal Spirit side were crowned divi-

sion two champions.

Despite the disappointment, Gardner reflected positively on his lengthy playing career.

Gardner’s football journey began at his hometown club of Featherston United in the South Wairarapa District and won his first division one title in 1996.

He then moved on to Masterton in 2000, for what would be his first of three stints at the club, where he won back-to-back titles for four years from 2005-2008.

Gardner also captained the side to glory in 2011 – winning

promotion and all the titles on offer.

Spells at Upper Hutt City and Wairarapa United illustrated the defender’s determination for continued success and thirst for new challenges before a move south in 2013.

Over three seasons with the transitioning Mid Canterbury United, the 40-year-old’s experience helped the club acclimatise to higher divisions and challenge for honours along the way, including two cup wins.

Since making the club aware of

his intentions to retire, the senior Mid Canterbury team coaching role has been offered.

But Gardner will not be barking from the touchline, insisting he will have a break from the beautiful game, although he has indicated his availability for the masters team.

“I had that option, but I doubt I’d be able to make that commitment to manage them,” he said.

“But I have made myself available to the Masters, if they’ve got 10 players and they’re playing in Ashburton.”

The All Whites are the biggest movers on the latest Fifa World Rankings.

The Anthony Hudson-coached side, who won the OFC Nations Cup in Papua New Guinea in June, have climbed 54 places on the rankings to 93rd on the Fifa World Rankings.

It is the highest ranking for the team under Hudson in his two years in charge.

The All Whites, who will face several of the world’s best teams next year when they compete in the Confederations Cup in Russia, will have a number of opportunities to improve on that

ranking with a number of fixtures expected for the national side in the next 18 months.

They will pay two games, home and away, against New Caledonia in November, with two more to follow against Fiji next March, in the next stage of OFC World Cup qualifying.

The All Whites were the biggest movers in the July edition of the world rankings, with Puerto Rico climbing 46 places to 112th, while Belize dropped 50 places to 164th.

The next highest ranked Oceania side is New Caledonia, who the All Whites beat 1-0 in the

semifinal of the OFC Nations Cup in Papua New Guinea.

They are now 161st.

The top five teams in the world are all unchanged with Argentina leading from Belgium, Colombia, Germany and Chile.

Portugal, who won Euro 2016 defeating France 1-0 in the final, have moved up to sixth, one ahead of the hosts of that competition.

But the big talking point on this side of the world is the rise of the All Whites and what their markedly improved ranking will mean for their Road to Russia.

Long-serving defender John Terry will remain Chelsea’s captain in the coming season, new manager Antonio Conte said yesterday at his first news conference since joining the Premier League club.

Terry, 35, signed a new oneyear contract at Stamford Bridge in May to end speculation that he was going to leave the London club after more than 700 appearances.

He remains a firm favourite with the club’s fans.

“John Terry is captain of this team.

“He is a great player with a great personality and charisma.

He knows the club.

“We take all decisions together with the club and I am very happy John signed,” Conte said.

Conte, who guided Juventus to three successive Serie A titles from 2012 to 2014 before becoming the Italian national team coach, has replaced interim manager Guus Hiddink.

Known for his motivational powers and fiery touchline presence, the Italian said the team would need to emulate his work ethic to get back to winning ways after missing out on qualification for European soccer.

“Every manager has his own idea of football and I want to transfer my ideas to the players.

“I have great passion for football, for my team and my work,” he added.

“It’s important to have players who are ready to fight, play good football and transfer our passion and emotion to the fans.

“I am a worker. I suffer during the game.

“I want my players and the fans to see this.”

Chelsea, the 2014-15 Premier League champions, finished only 10th in the table last season and parted company with manager Jose Mourinho midway through the campaign.

“Last season was a bad season,” Conte said.

“We must fight for the title, we belong in the Champions League and we must stay there.”

Mid Canterbury under-17 netball team’s preparations for next week’s nationals have been less than ideal, but coach Sonia Waddell is focusing on the positives.

Mid Canterbury lost out to North Otago (36-19), Southland (34-18), Dunedin B (29-14) and South Canterbury (33-20) at the Netball South Under-17 tournament in Oamaru last week.

To make matters worse, Apii Terekia and Georgina Kelly sustained ankle injuries that have ruled them out of next week’s tournament.

Both Terekia and co-captain Kelly offer Waddell plenty of versatility.

Terekia can operate at goal keeper and goal shooter while Kelly is a major asset at goal attack, wing defence and centre.

Replacements have yet to be drafted in, but Kate Brady will fill

the gap left by Hannah McDougall, who pulled out last week following a head knock.

Mid Canterbury faced Allenton A at the EA Networks Centre on Thursday evening to refine their plans before the nationals begin in Rangiora on Monday, and Waddell was pleased with what she saw.

“Playing Allenton A was really, really good – the girls stepped up and have been working really hard,” she said.

Despite the challenging buildup, Waddell insisted her players were looking forward to taking on some of the country’s finest age-group players.

“I’m looking forward to it, we just want the girls to experience a nationals,” she said.

“It will be a real eye-opener for them.

“They’ll be playing against some top players, but now the focus is just on individual and team improvement.”

NSW Swifts face Brisbane netball hoodoo By adrian Warren The NSW Swifts must break through two big historical barriers to overcome arch-rivals Queensland Firebirds in the trans-Tasman netball Australian conference final.

Despite their record as a netball powerhouse, the Swifts have surprisingly lost all 10 matches they’ve ever contested in Brisbane, including last year’s epic grand final which was decided by one goal at the death.

It’s just as well that Monday’s big match won’t be won on paper as Swifts fans will be further concerned to learn the Firebirds have never lost a finals match in Brisbane.

First though, the New Zealand conference final will be contested tomorrow, with the unbeaten Southern Steel hosting WaikatoBoP Magic in Invercargill.

The BoP Magic are the only one of the 10 teams to have made each of the nine finals series, but they will start as underdogs against a Steel side that scored 10-goal wins over them in both of their regular season clashes.

The Firebirds are the first defending champions from Australia to make it back to the finals the following season.

They’ve done it just in time, with the competition finishing in it’s ninth year and being replaced in 2017 by separate tour-

naments in Australian and New Zealand.

The Swifts can take heart from the fact they won their last scrap with the Firebirds in late May in front of a competition-record crowd of 13,314 at Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena.

The two teams met at the corresponding stage of last year’s tournament, but the Swifts will be much more rested than they were before the 2015 Australian conference final.

They lost to the Firebirds by 11 in Brisbane, but that game was less than 48 hours after winning a home elimination game.

“We had to play on the Friday night and then had to travel

Saturday and play the Sunday lunchtime,” Swifts’ goal attack Susan Pettitt recalled.

“That was obviously an experience and something that was very difficult for us to do.

“We had to turn around in that quick a time to match up against the Firebirds, who are a quality side.

“We’ve had an eight-day turnaround (this year), so it’s a little bit longer than a normal week.

“Mentally and physically it’s an advantage to have the whole week just to prepare to get our bodies right from the last game and then get to work on the things we want to work on.”

Matt Gillett is in doubt for Brisbane’s NRL match against South Sydney today after picking up a shoulder injury in Queensland’s State of Origin III loss. The Broncos star failed to train with the team in the captain’s run yesterday, however is still considered an outside chance of playing at ANZ Stadium. “He’s getting scans on that at the moment. We just have to wait and see how everything pulls up,” assistant coach Stephen Kearney said.

Archer defends refs NRL referees boss Tony Archer has hit back at his predecessor Bill Harrigan, throwing his support behind his whistleblowers for their performance in State of Origin III. Harrigan slammed the performance of referee Gerard Sutton in Wednesday night’s dead rubber, saying he wouldn’t have selected him. The penalty count was 9-1 in the Blues’ favour at halftime after the Maroons copped a string of them for infringements while desperately defending their line. However Archer not only said his refs were correct in penalising the Maroons for their repeated infringements in the first half, he said they performed well across the whole series.

Future looking good Veteran prop Ben Hannant still feels he has plenty to offer North Queensland but is not afraid to take his NRL career elsewhere. The 31-yearold’s future with the Cowboys remains unclear, despite room being made by the departure of James Tamou for Penrith after this season. But even if Hannant’s not re-signed, he’s “not even close” to retiring. “Obviously I’m getting older now so I’m further down on that list of priorities,” Hannant said. “But I’m not thinking about hanging up my boots. I’m probably in the best shape of my career.”

Hannant has accrued nearly 240 NRL games.

Former Mount Hutt College student and Ashburton College 1st XV player Dallas McLeod (right) has been selected for the Crusader Knights under-18 team to face the Hurricanes under-18s at Rugby Park in Christchurch this afternoon.

The midfielder received a scholarship from current UC Championship leaders Christ’s College earlier this year and has had a fine 2016 campaign.

End of winning streak Peter Burling and Blair Tuke’s unprecedented winning run in the 49er class is over. The Kiwi pair have finished third at the South American Championships in Rio yesterday – their final warm-up regatta before next month’s Olympics.

The result brings to an end Burling and Tuke’s incredible streak of 27 straight wins stretching back to 2012, when the pair collected silver at the London Games.

Hampstead will lock horns with Hampstead-Collegians in a Mid Canterbury derby at the Ashburton Hockey Turf on Sunday.

Hampstead currently lead the way on the Mid-South Canterbury women’s division one hockey ladder and remain the only unbeaten team.

Rex Turnbull’s side have won nine and been held to just two draws so far this season, while Hampstead-Collegians have won four, lost five and drawn two.

But, despite a gap of 22 points on the table, Hampstead will be expecting a tough encounter.

The two teams could not be separated when they met back in April for a 3-3 drawn result, before a rampant Hamp-

stead side took a 6-2 win in June.

Hampstead will also be without some key personnel.

Centre half Sara Harrison, striker Shannon Thompson-Laing and defenders Olivia Callaghan and Michelle Knight are all unavailable.

Meanwhile Hampstead-Collegians will be hoping they have enough left in the tank for the all-Mid Cantebury affair as eight players return from under-18 representative duty in Timaru.

Neither of the men’s division one teams will be in action this weekend with Wakanui Blue having the bye, while Wakanui Black’s clash with Cambridge has been deferred until August 2.

Tomorrow’s women’s division one fixture: Hampstead v Hampstead-Collegians, 3pm, Ashburton Hockey Turf.

Greyhound racing an endangered species

T

he news last week that greyhound racing was banned in New South Wales came as a bit of a shock, even though it had been widely telegraphed as a possibility.

While not currently involved in the sport, I have been a greyhound owner in the past, with fellow Guardian comp-room workers Dave Taylor and Brenda Woodthorpe-Jordan-Davidson.

We were lucky enough to have a champion dog in our day, so we travelled around a bit and certainly saw a lot of the industry in action.

Our timing was awful of course; we were trying to win big races like the Wellington Cup, the Galaxy and the NZ Cup, which were worth around $2-3000 – nowadays Wellington is worth $21,000, a Galaxy win

will get you $30,000 and the biggie, the NZ Cup is now worth $100,000!

Throughout our times around the traps we ran into all sorts of people.

There were a whole lot of wonderful folks who were committed to making the industry a success, and having a lot of fun at the same time; there were a few oddbods, and one or two dodgy characters who it was best not to get too involved with.

In other words, pretty much a similar sort of crowd that you would find in any sporting, business or social group anywhere.

I find it remarkable that in New South Wales the powers that be have decided that the dodgy characters clearly rule the roost.

have been involved in some very nasty training practices involved live baits for a long time, and have neither remorse nor inclination to change those ways, and those practices are rife throughout the greyhound community there.

It seems incredible that the industry as a whole would be allowed by the good people to deteriorate to such a degree, but that’s what appears to have happened.

Craig Roberts was our first trainer, and later we were

involved with the McInerney kennels with our dogs.

We visited both kennels on several occasions, and if there were any dodgy goings-on, well they must have had a special shed a way out the back for them, because at all times we saw happy dogs in very professional surroundings, and anyone we had dealings with were always friendly and upfront about everything they did; the safety and health of their dogs were paramount, which of course makes a whole lot of sense business-wise anyway.

I can’t imagine that the doggy fraternity over the ditch would be massively different from ours, but if the allegations are all true there’s a large group of fine people in business going to suffer for the actions of some very bad eggs.

Netball New Zealand has appointed Jennie Wyllie to lead the organisation as it enters a difficult period of transition. Wyllie replaces former chief executive Hilary Poole, taking the helm at a time when the sport is facing major change, including the move back to a domestic elite competition next year following the split of the trans-Tasman league.

Spurs sign Gasol The San Antonio Spurs, looking to fill a void left by the retirement of future Hall of Famer Tim Duncan, officially added Pau Gasol yesterday in an effort to shore up their front line. Terms of the contract were not disclosed but it was widely reported that Gasol, the only NBA player to average 15 points, 10 rebounds and four assists a game last season, signed a two-year deal worth $US30 million ($NZ39 million).

Froome does a runner Chris Froome was allowed to keep the yellow jersey after the Tour de France race jury ruled he lost his bike in unfair circumstances during a wacky conclusion to the 12th stage. In a complete embarrassment for race organisers on Bastille Day, Richie Porte crashed into a motorbike carrying a TV camera and Froome, who was following right behind his former teammate, also crashed in the final kilometre. Froome threw his bike aside and began running up the road. He eventually was given a small yellow race assistance bike before his team car was finally able to provide him with a suitable substitute.

Willis lauds runners Nick Willis is in awe of the tenacity his fellow 1500 metre runners have shown to earn their ticket to Rio. Hamish Carson and Julian Matthews will be part of the blue ribbon event in Rio, joining Willis in the New Zealand track and field team. Willis says despite the lack of chances, the persistence shown by the pair to get to the Olympics is exceptional.

Points deduction hurts Hampstead

Hampstead Senior B have had 13 points deducted after fielding two ineligible players and failing to correctly produce a team list on four occasions.

Hampstead B have won four their six Centennial Mug fixtures so far and amassed three bonus points along the way, but the deduction reduces their points tally from 19 to six – all but dashing any semi-final aspirations.

Hampstead club president Jim Henderson said the club have accepted the points deduction after being presented with evidence by the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union.

“It’s an unfortunate situation.

“We’re disappointed with losing the points because the Senior Bs have been playing a good brand of rugby at times this season,” he said. “But, the rules are there for a reason and we breached those rules and accept that.”

Hookers go head to head

By CamPBell Burnes There are enough hypothetical questions flying about over the Super Rugby travel and playoffs permutations to drive a man crazy.

Hurricanes skipper Dane Coles, for one, only has eyes for the Crusaders, at 5.15pm tonight in Christchurch.

There’s no point in tying oneself in a knot doing sums and worrying about matches out of one’s control as the integrity of this Super Rugby competition justifiably takes a hammering.

That is the job of the media.

Coles is certainly not thinking about preferences on who they could play in a week for the quarter-finals.

His job is to get on top of Codie Taylor in his core hooking roles in the face of an All Blacks’ frontrow that will surely seek to put the heat on the Hurricanes.

“They are a quality side, quality set-piece, so it’s going to be a massive battle against them,” Coles said. “(Codie) had a pretty good mentor in Corey Flynn, who was

always a strong scrummager.

“He’s got great set-piece (skills) and he can play out wide as well.

“He’s a good Horowhenua lad, so there must be something in the water up there.”

Coles’ demeanour with referees came under the spotlight after an occasionally fractious clash with the Waratahs last weekend, but coach Chris Boyd is unconcerned about his skipper’s manner or approach, nor does he think there is anything in suggestions that his side tend to goad the opposition with their aggression.

“He’s high octane, high emotion and he’s been outstanding for us in our leadership capacity.

“He’s not a calming influence, but he has a unique leadership style that has suited us very well this year,” says Boyd.

“We’re not lillywhite, because in the end it is a physical confrontational sport, but I think we play well inside the boundaries of what is physically appropriate and what is ethically right for the game.

Hurricanes skipper Dane Coles is up against All Black rival Codie Taylor at AMI Stadium tonight.

“We certainly have no intention to go out to goad or rark up anybody, and the Crusaders will be no different to the Waratahs last week.”

That does not mean the breakdown tonight will be any less willing or bone-rattling, and there are myriad occasions

over the history of HurricanesCrusaders clashes when that physicality has threatened to boil over.

Richie McCaw was often at the centre of Hurricane frustration, as two incidents involving Jerry Collins and Neemia Tialata highlighted.

But history, and especially the Hurricanes’ 70-point pre-season pumping of the Crusaders, carries little relevance now.

More germane are the fascinating match-ups across the park for this clash.

The dynamic Ardie Savea goes up against New Zealand’s most under-rated player, Matt Todd, a man who seldom plays less than a top game, while lineout aces Kieran Read and Victor Vito butt heads, potentially for the last time.

Richie Mo’unga, who has shown his class so far in 2016, tests himself against the man who would be king, Beauden Barrett.

And ex-All Black Cory Jane is stealing himself for a Nemani Nadolo physical examination.

There’s something about the Chiefs that makes them sit a little aloof from the rest of the title contenders.

Maybe, by just the tiniest margin, they are the Super Rugby title favourites coming into the last weekend of pool play.

It’s a near impossible task separating the four New Zealand teams.

All have played breathtakingly good football in periods this season.

All of them look well enough equipped to go all the way. But finals football is not necessarily about the best teams triumphing – it is about the teams that best handle the pressure triumphing.

Everything changes this weekend – this is effectively an early knockout round.

The questions to ask change.

The things to look for are different. Which players can handle themselves in games where the tension doesn’t abate?

As far as finals football goes, the Highlanders have shown themselves to be supremely well set up.

In Lima Sopoaga, they have a playmaker whose ability to stay calm and execute is priceless.

He’s also a nerveless goalkicker.

Aaron Smith helps out with that decision-making and Ben Smith applies magic touches from the back. It’s a winning formula, supported by a solid pack that never seem to deviate in effort of accuracy.

It’s tempting to say they will defend their title, but that’s until the difficulties of their possible schedule are factored in.

They are coming into tonight’s critical clash with the Chiefs on the back of a tough spell of travel and that might be enough to blunt some of their edge.

And if they don’t beat the Chiefs, then they are most likely looking at heading back to South Africa for a quarter-final.

The Crusaders were on fire against the Rebels last week but all season they have looked brilliant against the Australian and South African sides while struggling against the New Zealand teams.

If the Crusaders can’t dominate up front, they haven’t looked the same team and the Chiefs twice and Highlanders once put them away without too much trouble.

As for the Hurricanes, they have been strong without ever quite reaching the same heights as last season.

It would be a mistake to underestimate the Lions. For a long period, they were the weakest team in Super Rugby – a shambolic, basketcase of a side who felt like they would never get their act together.

They have their act together now.

But as much as the Lions are a danger, they don’t stack up, despite beating them in Hamilton, as a more likely champion than the Chiefs.

House prices rocketing

Award for Skydiving Kiwis Ashburton-based skydiving company Skydiving Kiwis has won a director’s award for its focus on client safety.

Industry leaders met in Wellington last week for the Civil Aviation Authority’s annual awards ceremony and gala dinner.

The event celebrates organisations and individuals who are the forefront of transforming New Zealand’s civil aviation industry through their dedication to safety, leadership and innovation.

Skydiving Kiwis CEO Lee Barraclough was personally commended by the director of the Civil Aviation Authority Graeme Harris and presented with the award.

“The Director of Civil Aviation Awards are presented annually to the individual, and to the company or organisation that demonstrate an outstanding safety ethos – the awards go to those who go out of their way to do the right thing and do it the right way,” Mr Harris said.

Cheap flights snapped up More than 15,000 people visited Air New Zealand’s Grabaseat webpage yesterday as the site turned 10.

It offered 1000 tickets for $10 on domestic flights and the airline says most were gone within minutes.

Within one hour of the birthday deals being placed on the site at 9am, 60,000 people had visited, more than double the daily average.

Cut price international flights remained online until midnight.

A Grabaseat spokesman said the flights were available on various dates, some later this year and early next year.

“Just look around the site a bit and you’ll find them.”

Eager Kiwis were yesterday morning struggling to view the site as it failed to load for some.

Within minutes of the news breaking, seats across the country sold out.

According to the site, flights from Wellington to Christchurch, Dunedin to Wellington, and

Queenstown to Wellington were among the flights to have been snapped up.

Annabelle Fowler, general manager of market development and retail sales at Air New Zealand, said Grabaseat had experienced phenomenal growth since its creation in 2006.

More than 28,000 people visit

the site on average each day.

“Customers have taken up more than 1.8 million Greenlight Deals over the past 10 years, covering some 840 million kilometres.

“That’s equivalent to more than 1000 return trips to the moon or 23,000 return trips between Auckland and London.”

She said it’s the spontaneity

of Grabaseat that has resonated with people.

“We’ve had seats sell out in minutes and know the deals have inspired thousands of impromptu getaways and have given many people the chance to see more of family and friends.”

Earlier this week Grabaseat took to the streets to celebrate its birthday, planting a large cake in Auckland’s Takutai Square in Britomart.

Punters could burrow for birthday surprises including return international and domestic flights for two.

Mt Hutt more than just a winter playground Sue Newman

hile this week’s rain might have been welcome and the couple of balmy nor’west days we experienced a light relief from frost, between them they did not a jot of good for one of our big ticket businesses.

Mr Hutt Skifield is having what can only be described as a season from hell. An early snow fall promised a great season, but that promise was washed away by wind, rain and warm temperatures. It snowed again and it blew again.

Whether you ski or not, don’t dismiss the misfortunes of the skifield as just part of running a seasonal business, it’s a whole lot more than that in terms of its importance to this district.

Yes, it’s a seasonal business, but in the four-plus months that are its winter life, hundreds of thousands of visitors come into our district and between them they spend millions of dollars.

Our skifield has also put us on the map in ways no other industry or tourist attraction could.

Before Doug Hood, with great Kiwi ingenuity, carved a road up the mountain and declared he’d develop a skifield, the Ashburton District was just another rural pocket on the New Zealand landscape and Methven just another sleepy rural servicing town.

Today Methven only sleeps in the summer sun; in the winter it becomes a very different and vibrant place – once the snow arrives. And once the snow arrives the visitors come and the money comes. And from that we all benefit.

Its counter balance is Lake Hood. It took people of courage to push this project. Before it was developed Ashburton was never on Canterbury’s radar as a summer destination, never on the nation’s radar as an aquatic sports venue. Now it is and we’ve all benefited from that through increased visitor numbers and increased visitor spending.

Lake Hood, however, has the advantage of being available for use regardless of the weather.

Mt Hutt does not and unfortunately our winter playground is our big dollar earner. If the snow doesn’t come, the people don’t come and the dollars don’t come either.

Yes, Methven businesses will hurt, yes Mt Hutt and NZSki. com will hurt, but yes, our wider economy will must definitely feel the loss of dollars.

YOUR VIEW Outdoor burning In response to your story (July 15) about outdoor fires, Environment Canterbury would like to remind people not to burn waste in urban areas (including small towns), or in rural areas that are inside Ashburton’s clean air zone.

During winter, this outdoor burning may cause nuisance and contributes to poor air quality by adding to pollution caused by home heating and other sources.

Outside of clean air zones and in rural areas, it is OK to burn organic matter over winter months, however people should minimise the smoke emissions by ensuring burns are quick and hot.

People in towns or clean air zones should dispose of green waste by composting, shredding or chipping it to make garden mulch.

If you are not sure whether it is OK to burn outside, please call Environment Canterbury on 0800 324-676.

Two-wheeled blunders A

lright, I shouldn’t have laughed because I know what it feels like, but when my mate who can’t be named (begins with T and rhymes with bony), came off his bike, I nearly wet my Ministry of Education underwear.

See we were out the back of the airport when I suggested we go down Milton Road. It starts in gravel and then turns into mud. Being on what are known as cross touring motorbikes, we reckoned it was worth a crack.

Nameless mate went first and got it into second just as he was trying avoid a very large mud puddle.

Attempting to ride up the side of the rut, he commenced what is known in motorcycling circles as an unplanned horizontal dismount. In slow motion he succumbed to gravity and in an almost gentle movement laid the 190kg bike down amongst the chilled weeds and melting permafrost mud.

I watched all of this unfold from behind and as soon as the rocking motion of the bike subsided, I parked my bike and moved to help ensure the bike was ok. That’s when I started to giggle and snort. Luckily I had a full face helmet on and could contain some of my merriment.

you reading this promise to not say a word to anyone, I will tell you how I know how this feels.

Well.

A few years ago the middle syndicate of 75 children and three teachers were having a camp at school. They were about to bike across the main road to the Tinwald Domain. Ever safety conscious, the teachers arranged two well-known officers of the law – Pup Chamberlain and Chris Wiltshire (he does look like a walrus with that mo doesn’t he?) to teach road safety.

Everyone (including parents who were helping) were assembled outside the hall, all wearing safety vests. Chris the Walrus had been giving me heaps about the fact I was riding a GN250, while he was on a Harley Fatboy 1400cc beast. So I decided to give him something to think about.

Unbeknownst to everyone, I donned my riding gear, including a safety vest, and hooned

around the staffroom, towards the assembled group, all the while tooting my horn.

I then proceeded to line up Chris and rev the bike while riding straight towards him, thinking I would stop or swerve before I got to him – well that was the plan.

I was actually hoping Chris would jump out of the way, such was the manly sight of me on a 250 wearing a kids’ bus safety vest.

But Officer Wiltshire was made of sterner stuff, he merely folded his considerable forearms and grimaced beneath that grizzled mo a 70’s fireman would be proud of.

So in my infinite wisdom I decided to swerve at the last minute, however I had not anticipated the extra speed the mighty GN had in first gear.

With a svelte touch of the front brake, I began my 0.001 negative g-force turn.

At this point my Thailandmade front tyre decided to retire and have a lie down, taking the rest of the bike with it. So at approximately 11km an hour I had an unplanned horizontal dismount, right in front of Corporal Chris ‘Walrus’ Wiltshire.

I always wear a full face helmet for two reasons now, other than safety.

One, it hides my face of shame in such incidences and two, it drowns out the howls of laughter that accompanies such inevitable karma type situations.

To his credit, Chris came over to help me, or so I thought. In fact he reached over and turned off the bike, then gave me a look that spoke more than any lecture my father had ever given me.

The teachers who were used to me being silly and stealing the limelight, now glared at me for getting the kids rarked up, while most of the parents were in various stages of hysterical paralysis.

To add insult to injury, when we got to the domain, Pup and Chris pulled me over in the marked car, and frisked me in classic arrest style. It was going to be a long time before I would live this one down.

So, to me mate who was rather annoyed at what had happened to him in a grotty mud puddle out the back of the Ashburton International Airport, be thankful it was only me who saw it and had a giggle.

Carnage on Bastille Day

BY SOPHIE SASSARD A “terrorist” gunman has killed 80 people and wounded scores when he drove a heavy truck at high speed into a crowd watching Bastille Day fireworks in the French Riviera city of Nice.

In a pre-dawn address to the nation yesterday, President Francois Hollande called up military and police reservists to relieve forces worn out by an eight-month state of emergency begun after the Islamic State militant group killed 130 people in Paris.

The state of emergency has been extended.

“France is filled with sadness by this new tragedy,” Hollande said, noting several children were among the dead in what he said he had no doubt was an act of terrorism.

He called the carnage, which came as France celebrated the anniversary of the 1789 revolutionary storming of the Bastille, an attack on liberty by fanatics who despised human rights.

France would, nonetheless, continue military operations in Syria and Iraq.

Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said 80 people died and 18 were in a critical condition, with many more also wounded.

Counter-terrorist investigators were seeking to identify the driver, who a local government official said opened fire before police shot him dead.

The official said weapons and grenades were found inside the 25-tonne, unmarked articulated truck.

Officials said hundreds were hurt as the driver wove along the seafront, knocking them down “like skittles”.

Newspaper Nice-Matin quoted unidentified sources as saying the driver was a 31-yearold local of Tunisian origin.

The truck careered for hundreds of metres along the famed Promenade des Anglais seafront, slamming into spectators watching the fireworks, listening to an orchestra or strolling above the beach towards the grand, century-old Hotel Negresco.

“It’s a scene of horror,” member of parliament Eric Ciotti told France Info radio, saying

the truck “mowed down several hundred people”.

Jacques, who runs Le Queenie restaurant on the seafront, told the station: “People went down like ninepins.”

Bystander Franck Sidoli, who was visibly shocked, said: “I saw people go down.”

“Then the truck stopped, we were just five metres away.

“A woman was there, she lost her son. Her son was on the ground, bleeding,” he said.

Nice-Matin posted photographs of the truck, its windshield starred by a score of bullets and its radiator grille destroyed.

Major events in France have been guarded by troops and

armed police since the IS attacks last year, but it appeared to have taken many minutes to halt the progress of the truck as it tore along pavements and a pedestrian zone.

Hours earlier, Hollande, who raced back to Paris from the south of France after the attack, had said the state of emergency would end in two weeks. He has now extended it by three months, calling up former troops and gendarmes.

On social media Isis supporters celebrated the high death toll. Officials have warned in the past of the risk of Islamist attacks in the region following the Paris and Brussels attacks.

Swift ‘playing the victim’ Taylor Swift’s taking hits from all sides this week, and now Kim Kardashian West has come at her again, blasting the pop star for “playing the victim”. Kim’s husband Kanye West has been locked in a bitter feud with Taylor over his song Famous, which contains the lyrics “I feel like me and Taylor might still have sex” but Kim insists Taylor approved the song and hit out at the star for slamming it.

Speaking in an upcoming episode of E!’s Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Kim referred to a recent GQ interview where she slammed Taylor and said: “I never talk s**t about anyone publicly, especially in interviews. But I was just like, I had so had it. I just felt like I wanted to defend Kanye. I just don’t think he should be punished for it still to this day.”

Jail time for sadistic Twitter troll A Twitter troll has been jailed after bullying the mother of murdered toddler Jamie Bulger online.

Chloe Cowan, who wasn’t even born when toddler Jamie was murdered 22 years ago, sent vile tweets to Bulger’s mother Denise Fergus on Twitter.

The 20-year-old performing arts student pleaded guilty to a stalking offence under Section 4 of the 1997 Protection Of Harassment Act of causing Mrs Fergus “serious alarm”.

The messages had “an adverse effect on her usual dayto-day activities” between January and June last year.

Judge Adele Williams branded Cowan as “sadistic”, and she “tormented” the tragic tot’s

mother with a “cruelty which was truly breathtaking” and “designed to cause maximum distress and anguish”.

Shockingly, when police raided Cowan’s home at the time in Margate, they found pictures of dead and mutilated babies and a photograph of Jamie Bulger’s grave on her computer.

Canterbury Crown Court was told officers also found pictures of Jamie being led away by his killers and a photograph of Mrs Fergus with a hangman’s noose around her neck.

Cowan had a macabre interest in child deaths, child rape, serial killers, and notorious child murderers Myra Hindley, Ian Huntley and Rose West.

Denise Fergus The judge added: “Your offence involved sending the most vile and degrading messages via Twitter to Denise Fergus.

“In my judgement you have shown no true remorse and no insight into your offend-

ing. This is maybe because you cannot show true remorse or insight.”

Cowan was arrested after police launched an investigation when Mrs Fergus complained about trolls on Twitter blaming her for the death of Jamie in 1993.

Mrs Fergus tweeted: “Cant believe that some1 on here is still blamin me 4 my sons murder it took me a long time 2 stop blamin myself thanx 4 ruinin my evenin (sic).”

After a picture of a relative of Mrs Fergus was posted online, Cowan, using the username SirJVenables, taunted: “Can’t wait til he’s a tot, the tracks are already calling his name” – referring to the brutal murder of Bulger.

A clown to haunt you This is the face of a nightmare. A new image of Pennywise the clown has been released ahead of the remake of Stephen King classic It. Played by Bill Skarsgard, the reboot is due for release in September 2017 and is directed by Andres Muschietti. Pennywise is a central figure in the film, a terrifying clown who lures children into drains using handfuls of red balloons and is controlled by a larger force known as ‘It’. The new photo of Pennywise was revealed by Entertainment Weekly, and Skarsgard told the publication his version of the iconic character was “extreme”. “It’s beyond even a sociopath, because he’s not even human. He’s not even a clown.
