With a mixture of anticipation, hope and dread, Mid Canterbury secondary school students flocked online yesterday.

They had more to worry about than their social media updates, as it was the day National Certificate of Educational Achieve-

ment (NCEA) exam results were released.

Among those logging in to the NZQA website to find out how they went were 17-year-olds Mollie Gibson and Emma Stagg.

“It was quite nerve wracking, the suspense built up a little bit,” Emma said.

The Ashburton College stu-

dents completed Year 12 last year.

Mollie studied English, maths, accounting, economics, physics and physical education, while Emma studied English, maths, law, classics, geography and physical education.

Both are going into Year 13 at the college this year, and plan to attend university once they leave

school, although have not made any decisions yet on what they want to study.

The pair are members of the college’s rowing team, and first tried to get their results when they got up early for a practice about 4.45am.

Drawing the anticipation out even further they found the re-

sults had not been loaded yet.

They had to try again later, so they did, going online again as soon as they got back from rowing at about 8.30am.

This time the information was there, and the news was good.

Both had met their own high expectations and received excellence endorsed overall.

Rogue scooters a big hit

Children’s trip could have been a double fatality

One of the biggest trends on two wheels has made a cameo visit to Ashburton.

The Guardian understands four Lime scooters were brought in to the town on Monday evening.

Despite being outside of the nearest operating area for the scooters which is Christchurch, some locals took the opportunity to take the scooters for a spin.

“We were driving over the bridge and saw them being ridden,” Sarah Mccrea said.

“We found them and rode them all night and left them parked outside our houses and nobody took them, and then I drove one to work.”

Many people responded on the Guardian’s Facebook page saying they had seen the scooters around town, including on South Street, while others posted videos of them being ridden along streets.

Ashburton District Council environmental services group manager Jane Donaldson said the scooters are considered to be vehicles under the council’s bylaws.

Under the council’s bylaws, a vehicle has the same meaning as in the Land Transport Act 1998 and generally means a man-made device for land transport, including, but not limited to, cars, trucks, heavy machinery, motorbikes, and bicycles and any other machine with wheels, tracks, rollers or skids; but does not include prams, strollers, wheelchairs or other mobility scooters.

Lime were unable to be contacted for comment.

The scooters now operate in Auckland, Christchurch, Upper and Lower Hutt and most recently

Dunedin, and hit 500,000 scooter rides at the end of November last year.

The scooters have hit the headlines recently for a variety of reasons.

suffered a heart attack while riding home after watching a New Zealand Breakers game with a friend, while they have been pulled off streets in Switzerland after software issues started stopping the scooters and throwing off their riders.

Police are counting their blessings that a tragedy was avoided after receiving multiple reports of two children cycling down State Highway 1 without helmets on Monday evening.

Senior sergeant Matt Emery said they had received a number of calls and people coming in to the police station to report two children, both believed to be younger than 10, cycling towards Ashburton from Fairton.

“Fortunately there was an off-duty officer from down south who was concerned enough to pull over and take them off the road until our on-duty officers could arrive and take them home,” he said.

“They said they were cycling from Fairton to Ashburton and dad had said it was alright, but that is obviously not the case.

“Given the volume of traffic that travels that road it was absolutely a near disaster.”

Emery said it was a reminder for people to be aware of cycle safety, to always wear a helmet and to always supervise children.

Outdoors is home for new hut warden

Wherever Bec Crilly lays her backpack, that is her home.

And currently the 22-year-old and her backpack are a familiar sight in the Mid Canterbury outdoors, where she is a hut warden on the Mt Somers Track.

Originally from Australia, Crilly completed a degree in visual communication, as she aimed to work in graphic design and illustration, about three years ago.

But then she got distracted. Venturing onto the Te Araroa trail across New Zealand led her hopes and dreams along a new path.

“Ever since then I have been hooked, and love the lifestyle and find it hard to go back.”

Late last year she landed the perfect job, in the new hut warden position, made possible with tourism infrastructure funding allocated in Budget 2017. Crilly is based at Woolshed Creek Hut and Pinnacles Hut for three months this summer, working alongside volunteer wardens. Traditionally, either paid or volunteer wardens have been based at Woolshed Creek Hut in summer, but it was only last summer that the Department of Conservation installed wardens’ quarters at Pinnacles Hut. “Sometimes I have to remind myself I’m getting paid to do this,” Crilly said.

Not only is she happy getting paid for doing something she loves, but living in the warden facilities is pure luxury compared to sleeping in her tent.

She works seven days on and three days off.

On her breaks she will often go tramping at other South Island destinations.

“In three days you can do a lot, which is awesome,” she said.

Crilly has hiked the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal and the Continental Divide Trail from Mexico to Canada, and once she finishes her stint as hut warden will head back to her home country and do the almost 1000-kilo-

metre long Bibbulmun Track in Western Australia.

Crilly is not sure if she will ever settle down.

Working for half the year and travelling the rest gives her the opportunity to view places near and far.

“That’s what life is for, you may as well live it,” she said.

“And I have found a way of doing it on a low budget, but still manage to see a huge amount of the world.”

Crilly’s hut warden role involves orientating visitors, looking after the management of the hut and track, including ensuring people have paid their hut fees. At Woolshed Creek Hut she finds up to 20 per cent of visitors do not have hut tickets, as many first-time trampers are unaware they have to pay. She can solve that problem for them however, and takes cash, and even has an eftpos machine on hand.

Hut tickets are $15 per adult per night, or $5 for those camping outside.

While compliance is high at Woolshed Creek Hut, Crilly said she had found at Pinnacles Hut, many trampers neglected to put their hut tickets in the ticket box, but having a warden on site ensured there was a friendly reminder.

While the track and huts had been reasonably busy, rain at the end of last year kept numbers down. The busiest month is generally February, with trampers and climbers visiting from New Zealand and overseas, with a majority from Canterbury.

Mt Somers Walkway Society chairperson Barry Austin said this month major track work would begin between the two huts, costing about $12,000. The mainly clay track would be gravelled in some places and relocated within a couple of metres in areas which had been washed out by a storm last year. The work would follow the Jig Road accessway to the Woolshed Creek carpark having to be restored along one section due to being washed out last year.

Submissions period extended The submission period for people wanting to have their say on the proposed de-listing of an Ashburton heritage building has been extended to January 25.

Redmond Retail wants to de-list the Peter Cates grain store on West Street, saying it is not economically viable to upgrade the building.

People wanting to be heard on the de-listing application initially had until January 11 to lodge a notice of interest with the Environment Court. Just one, from Heritage New Zealand, was received at that point and the submission period was extended.

Heritage New Zealand said the grain store had significant historic heritage that required protection. It stood as an example of Ashburton’s past and current links with the agricultural industry and had architectural value in its distinctive style,

particularly with its large curved roof, the heritage group said it its submission.

The group asked for the de-listing application to be declined and that the building remain on the Ashburton District Council’s schedule of heritage items.

“The current zoning provides for several permitted activities that could be undertaken in the current building, with strengthening and some internal modifications.

This would allow the historic heritage features of the building to be retained whilst also allowing for some redevelopment of the site for reasonable use.”

The grain store is a building of two halves.

The first is the original two-storey, curved roof building front on West Street built in the late 1890s and the second is rear of the building built in the mid-1900s.

Boaties on Lake Hood have been largely sticking to the safety rules this summer.

Lake manager Gilbert Murdoch said no issues of concern had been reported to him and the lake had had a safety warden on patrol at times.

The man-made lake had been a mecca for boaties, mountain bikers and other visitors, especially on hot days when the lake was filled with boats, he said.

“The safety message has got through.”

Murdoch said visitor numbers were usually recorded by a road counter, but that was out of action because of roading projects at the lake.

“But fair to say, it is increasing year on year.”

Power boats and jet skis on Lake Hood must display a registration sticker and

people using those vessels must wear lifejackets. Around Canterbury only a handful of incidents on lakes were reported over the holiday period.

Environment Canterbury navigation safety officer Gary Manch said it was important incidents were reported so authorities could look at ways for improving boating safety for everyone.

The incidents were spread across Lake Benmore, Loch Laird, and Morven in southern Canterbury.

Most other behaviour in the region had been exemplary.

Lake Hood will be closed to the public on Saturday when the New Brighton Power Boat Club holds a speed racing regatta where a number of South Island titles will be up for grabs.

Weirs winners in bid to raise drain’s fish numbers Some strategically-placed boulders are making life more interesting for fish in the Hinds drains.

Central South Island Fish and Game officer Mark Webb noticed the man-made drains were straight and narrow while surveying the waterway system in 2014.

After about 40 minutes of recording data as part of a project for Hinds Drains Working Party (HDWP) he wondered if he was bored, would the fish be too?

Webb surveyed further waterways and came across an area where a farmer had laid concrete posts across a waterway to allow for irrigator pivot wheels to cross the stream.

A little further along the same drain he found some large boulders that had washed down into the stream from an area of stream bank that had been reinforced to manage erosion.

“It was really interesting to see that fish numbers appeared to be thriving in both these locations. It looked like the structures and rocks had created a little bit of instream habitat diversity by changing the water depths and bed gradients,” he said.

This gave Webb the idea to purposefully put structures in streams to create instream habitat diversity and a bit of excitement for fish.

In June 2015, 22 weirs were created in the Windermere Drain and 19 weirs in Taylors Drain by placing boulders into the stream bed thanks to the help of local farmers. The boulders were mechanically deposited in the drains and then moved by hand to create the preferred water conditions.

Webb says three years on, the weirs have settled into the stream environment and have created some exciting habitat for fish.

PHOTO SUPPLIED there could be an opportunity for this technique to be used in other waterways in the Hinds Drains and potentially further afield,” he said.

One of the concerns when the weirs were installed was that

they might impede drainage during high flows. Webb said it was pleasing to see that they held up during the floods in July 2017, which were 30-50-year events.

The sites are now being monitored to assess the impact of the

boulder induced habitat on fish populations.

An ongoing monitoring programme is being undertaken by the HDWP to monitor and access water quality data at 13 sites in the drains.

The group was formed by the Ashburton Water Zone Committee to ensure the drains are managed in a way that provides for multiple needs while protecting water quality and in-stream biodiversity.

■ EMPLOYMENT RELATIONS AUTHORITY

Tavern owners fined $30k The owners of the Coalgate Tavern have been ordered to pay $30,000 by the Employment Relations Authority (ERA) for 30 breaches of the Holidays Act. Malcolm and Claire Bennett, owners and operators of the Coalgate Tavern for more than 30 years, have been penalised for failing to provide three employees with minimum holiday rights, by treating them as casual employees despite them being permanent staff.

The ERA determined that while the Bennetts had “no intention to actively exploit or disadvantage the employees,” they had “recklessly shut their eyes to their obligations under the Holidays Act”.

It determined that by employing the staff as casual employees, the staff did not receive paid sick leave, bereavement leave, or annual or public holiday entitlements.

It is simply not acceptable for employers to fail to meet their employees’ basic rights

The determination follows an investigation by the Labour Inspectorate into the minimum rights of 17 employees at the pub.

“One employee who had worked for the pair for 10 years was only paid for one sick day throughout the period, she worked whilst unwell having been told by the Bennetts that she wasn’t entitled to paid leave,” Inspectorate Regional Manager Jeanie Borsboom said.

“Another employee did not take any time off work when

her mother died because she couldn’t afford to take unpaid leave.

“These breaches occurred over a significant period of time, and it was only after the investigation began that the Bennetts engaged with a payroll company to help them pay their employees correctly and record holiday entitlements.

“It is simply not acceptable for employers to fail to meet their employees’ basic rights.”

Employers need to know their obligations in relation to their employees from the

outset of beginning a business and stay up-to-date with any procedural changes that occur.

“The purpose of the Holidays Act is to provide balance between work and other aspects of employees’ lives.

Where employees are not paid correctly for time off work, their quality of life suffers.

“The authority found the lack of sick leave particularly serious as it hits at the very heart of the objective of the Holidays Act,” Borsboom said.

“In this case, one of the employees raised concerns when she realised she was entitled to annual leave and this should have triggered the Bennetts into reviewing their practice.

Instead they recklessly ignored their obligations.”

In brief Bus, car collide A number of people have been injured after a crash between a bus and a car in Christchurch.

A police spokeswoman said the crash occurred on the corner of Birchs Road and Trices Road in Prebbleton just before 3.30pm.

It was not known how many people were injured, but the injuries were believed to be minor, the spokeswoman said.

Struggling to cope with loss Friends are rallying to support the mother of two “beautiful boys” who died in a fiery crash in Christchurch following a police pursuit.

Glen and Craig, aged 16 and 13 respectively, were brothers.

Brooklyn Taylor, 13, was also killed in the crash.

The three teenagers were in a car fleeing from police late on Sunday night when they ran over police spikes and crashed into a tree before the wreck burst into flames.

A “good friend” of the brothers’ mother, Juanita Rose, set up a Givealittle page.

“My good friend Juanita has just lost both of her beautiful boys in a tragic accident,” the page said.

“As a single mother who is struggling to cope with an unimaginable loss, I would like to

make her stress a little easier to bear by taking away the burden of paying to bury her sons.”

The page was set up on Monday night and had raised over $1500 by Tuesday morning.

In a post on Facebook, the sister of Glen and Craig said it was “hard enough” losing one brother but to lose both “has destroyed me”.

“I love you both endlessly. Rest in paradise my angels.”

Another user told Brooklyn to “rest easy little man. I’ll see you real soon homie stay hard up there your gonna be missed.”

Rose told Stuff she was in “severe shock” and called her sons her “babies, my life”.

Canterbury district commander Superintendent John Price said a disaster victim identification team would formally identify the teens in the car.

Officers who tried to rescue the trio needed medical attention after the vehicle erupted into what one witness called a “ball of fire”.

The officers involved were “absolutely devastated about what happened”, Price said.

“These officers did not come to work to do anything other than to keep our community safe.”

The vehicle was first seen speeding in Christchurch CBD about 11.13pm on Sunday, Price said.

A pursuit was begun but abandoned “very quickly due to the manner of driving by the offending vehicle”.

The car crashed after hitting police spikes laid on Blenheim Road.

Police Association president Chris Cahill it was a “real trage-

dy” that would have been “unforeseen” when laying the spikes.

Early reports suggested officers involved had “done everything right”.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority and Police have been reviewing the management of instances when drivers flee.

The report was meant to be made public late last year but has been delayed until February.

A police investigation into Sunday’s crash was under way.

It was the third fatal crash after a police pursuit in Christchurch in less than two months.

Alexia Noble-Hazelwood, 18, died on November 16. Early on December 5, Dennis Tunnicliffe, 25, and pregnant passenger Renee Percy, 35, were killed after Tunnicliffe sped away from police before crashing into a power pole.

Stolen gnome heads back to his home A $55,000 bronze gnome sculpture stolen from outside Gow Langsford Gallery has been found abandoned in West Auckland.

Anna Jackson, director of Gow Langsford Gallery, told the Herald the gnome was recovered yesterday after it was dropped off at the Glen Eden Salvation Army with a note saying “Please return to Gow Langsford Art Gallery Auckland”.

Jackson said the gallery received a call from police to report the statue had been found.

“Staff at the Salvation Army called police when they turned up to work about 9am,” she said.

“When I got here the police were doing fingerprints and things. We are now allowed to take him home.”

Jackson said the sculpture,

named Thinker, by renowned artist Gregor Kregar, will now live safely inside the gallery.

“He is in pretty good condition. He will need a bit of a clean and a polish and then I think we will put him on show in our Lorne St gallery seeing as though he is a bit of a celebrity now so people will get the chance to see him,” she said.

The sculpture was stolen about midnight on Christmas Eve by three thieves in high-vis vests.

The thieves spent an hour removing the 2m-tall bronze gnome from outside the gallery on the corner of Wellesley and Kitchener Sts in Auckland Central.

CCTV footage showed the men bending down and using an instrument to unbolt the 80-

100kg statue from the concrete plinth.

Gallery director John Gow said they were seen rocking the gnome side to side, eventually wriggling it free.

They left the scene about 12.45am on Christmas Day, putting the statue into a vehicle parked outside the gallery’s Kitchener St entrance.

It was unclear what vehicle was used but CCTV had captured a “very clear picture of a Caucasian male’s face”.

“They were mostly wearing hoodies but there was this one point where they weren’t and our security camera which is trained on the sculpture picked up his face,” Gow said.

Staff first discovered the statue was stolen on Saturday after a horrified director Gary

Langsford drove past, noticing it missing. “I came straight in and could see that the work had been removed forcibly, through the chips around the edge of the concrete where the bolts went through and realised that we had a problem.

“And then when I reviewed the security footage sure enough there it was. I couldn’t believe it.”

He said he phoned artist, Kregar, to tell him the news. He initially thought he was joking, unfortunately he wasn’t.

Waitemata Police detective senior sergeant Roger Small said the theft was one of the more bizarre thefts he’s heard of.

“It’s not something that’s exactly common, but we’re very glad this artwork can now be returned to the gallery,” he said.

One person has died after a serious crash between a truck and a van on State Highway 1 near Taihape yesterday. Emergency services were called to the scene at 4.40pm, a police spokeswoman telling the Herald it was initially believed one person sustained serious injuries. “The deceased person, believed to be the van driver, sustained serious injuries in the crash and has since passed away at the scene,” police said in a statement. The serious crash unit has been notified and will be examining the crash scene, police said.

Death not suspicious A death at a block of flats in central Wellington is not being treated as suspicious. A police spokesman said a person died following an incident at the Dixon St flats just after 11am yesterday.

A number of police vehicles and officers could be seen on the street, with a cordon across the entrance to the flats. Police later announced the death is not suspicious, and has been referred to the coroner.

Avocados dangerous The number of injuries involving avocados has increased over the past three years, with the nutritious fruit costing ACC just over $800,000. While there are numerous health benefits of eating avocados, the stone fruit also presents many difficulties when it comes to removing the pit – with people slicing and stabbing themselves in great numbers. Last year alone, 428 people managed to injure themselves while preparing an avocado, up from 402 in 2017 and 374 in 2016.

AVOCO spokesperson said people injure themselves by attempting to prepare avocados in an unsafe manner. “A safe method is to place the avocado on a chopping board, slice the avocado longitudinally and then rotating it in order to slice the other half,” he said. “Once the avocado is halved, if the seed is not removed easily, the avocado should be rotated again and sliced into quarters on the chopping board.”

The highest earner among the Auckland DHB four received remuneration in the $1,330,000 to $1,339,999 band, the board’s 201718 annual report reveals. While six DHBs have yet to publish their 2017-18 reports, it is unlikely any of them will exceed this amount.

After Auckland DHB, Southern paid the next highest amount — in the band $710,000 to $720,000.

Gang members seize house An Auckland woman says gang members from a prominent crime family have illegally moved into her rental property and refused to leave.

And despite police intervention, the alleged squatters have now occupied the Otahuhu house for eight months.

Ravina Prasad said the property manager for her Albert Street property discovered someone had apparently broken in when the house was vacant in May. The intruders had shifted in their belongings and changed the locks.

Police told Prasad that the person living there was Abraham Wharewaka junior, a member of the Black Power gang who was jailed in 2005 on organised crime charges. He is the son of the late Black Power president and notorious drug dealer Abraham or “Abe” Wharewaka senior. Wharewaka junior’s partner is Shirlena Julian, the daughter of one of the Mongrel Mob founders.

“To be honest, I cry every night,” Prasad said.

“Knowing that someone has walked off the street, gone in there and claimed that it is his.”

A police spokesman said Wharewaka jnr was arrested

“Our civil case needs to prove that we are the owners of the property,” Prasad said. “Once we do that, we can do the trespass.”

While Prasad waits for her day in court, her family is running out of money. The dispute has cost her $17,500 in lost rental income and $8000 in legal bills so far.

“It’s such a nightmare right now,” Prasad said. “I’ve exhausted all my savings. I just don’t know

where I’m going to pay the next mortgage from.”

Her affidavit for the civil case shows Wharewaka jnr, 52, is claiming that the property is owned by his father. Wharewaka snr, who died in 2017, once ran a $5 million drug empire in a cluster of houses on Albert Street known as “the marae”.

Prasad and Chandra’s lawyers say they can find no evidence to back his claim of ownership.

Property records show the land was owned by Te Mana Developments – a company which appears to be linked to Wharewaka snr – in the 1980s, but the company went into liquidation in 1986 and the property was sold by Housing New Zealand, possibly in a mortgagee sale.

Prasad said she was shocked that she had been forced to take court action to prove ownership of her property. She and Chandra bought the property in 2015 and their names are on the title.

Despite being trespassed by police, Wharewaka jnr has returned to live at the house.

Prasad said she had been told by police to stay away because he was considered dangerous, and possibly armed.

The day Lime scooters came to town I

f it’s good enough for most major cities around this country, then why not little old Ashburton?

Yesterday morning’s discovery of the increasingly popular Lime scooters around the town caused a bit of a hullabaloo around the place, even here in the usually modest Guardian newsroom.

Let’s just ignore the question of how they had managed to be in our district in the first place for a minute and ponder over the much more enjoyable for a bit.

Our own Facebook page came to life over the little bit of news. People seemed genuinely excited.

Lime Scooters are a fast-grow-

ing mode of transport around the country and they are continually being introduced in new locations as time progresses.

Ashburton might not be high on the list of options in the near future but seeing as we’ve already proven their ability to handle our local terrain and a decent amount of popularity within locals, it’s surely done us no harm

when it comes to sit down and make the next launch decision.

They’ve been around for a while now and there’s been a pretty steady line of learning from their relatively new existence too.

In the positive column, there’s been plenty who have stood by them and declared them a wonderful mode of transport, they’ve given a new life to some otherwise deserted areas of Christchurch, they seem capable of handling even the toughest of terrains and altitudes – Dunedin’s famous Baldwin Street effort a glowing example, and the impact on the environment is surely better due to people us-

ing them as opposed to a car or other mode of normal transport.

There’s no positive line without a negative though and it’s quite clear that they aren’t for people with a heart condition, Wynton Rufer being the perfect case in point and most seemingly, it’s quite easy to uplift them and take them somewhere that they’re not actually supposed to be as our local discovery would suggest.

But perhaps the sight of a few dozen of these commodities around our streets would be a welcome addition to the centre of Ashburton.

Chuck a few in Allenton and you might even be lucky enough

to see a few more people changing their way of getting to work in the middle of the CBD and all of a sudden morning congestion is slightly decreased – a win for everybody.

With the evolution of such scooters and the growing presence of e-bikes around the place, perhaps the days of hopping in the car to come into the centre of town are coming to an end.

Perhaps it’s time we embraced the chance and introduced some new methods of getting around the place.

Perhaps, Lime scooters are the perfect way to kick things off.

The stages of life S

o far, I am lucky to have had four decades bouncing around with all the other souls on this planet and, when I look back, I sometimes feel like I have lived a dozen or so mini lives, with stages so vastly different and defined that they could be chapters in a very weird but strangely compelling novel.

This is a universal thing.

Our lives can be divided into definite parts: high school, parenthood, university days for example; or maybe the time spent at one workplace or home.

Sometimes a life changing event, good or otherwise, can begin or end a chapter.

Philosophers, scholars and psychologists over the centuries have been fascinated by life’s stages, and how much of these we have in common and what the stages mean for our growth and development as individuals.

Psychologist Daniel J Levinson spent two decades researching the cycles of life, and chronicled his theory in his book The Seasons of Life, in which he divided life into four stages of childhood and adolescence (age 0-22, making choices about life), early adulthood (age 17-45, concrete decisions around careers, values and friendship, settling down, routine and progress) middle adulthood (age 40-65, evaluation of life, life changes, a likely crisis or pivot)and late adulthood (age 60 onwards, a time for reflection and focus upon

and believe art imitates life, or the fabulously clever Oscar Wilde who believed the opposite and said, “Life imitates art far more than art imitates life”, for me the correlation between the two is undeniable.

When I look for patterns in the stages of life, I can’t help but go back to the idea of the elements of a story, with the chapters, structure, cliff-hangers and all the characters of a well-written novel.

We can be the lead in our own story, but we may be the love interest, hero or villain in someone else’s.

Characters in our stories (friends, lovers, family, bosses, colleagues) can come and go throughout the pages of our own lives.

A better analogy may not be that life is one whole novel, but a succession of short stories, all captivating and unique to each of us, telling the tale of the stages of our lives as we fiercely live them.

American writer Dan Harman created his story circle idea, a kind of distilled-down version of Joseph Campbell’s 12 stage heroes journey, designed as a universal story structure to aid writing, but which mirrors the stages of life researched by those like Jung and Levinson.

Basically, the story circle has eight stages in which the main character (the protagonist) begins in a zone of comfort,

American psychologist George Vaillant took a different stance and after studying some 800 people, devised six tasks that need to be completed, not necessarily in sequence, in order for us to have a full and meaningful life.

These included developing identity, a capacity for intimacy and for passing on of traditions.

Swiss psychologist Carl Jung thought there were four stages: the athlete, the warrior, the statement and the spirit.

But why does all this even matter?

As humans, we find comfort in patterns and creating a sense of order in the chaos of life, which is why we have this slight obsession with finding a kind of blueprint for how our lives can play out, and what it means to live a life of growth and purpose.

More than that though, it is important we live our lives on purpose, rather than sleep walking through them without noticing the shifts and learning from those patterns.

desires something else, which leads to an unfamiliar situation, they adapt to the change in that situation, get what they wanted but pay a high price for that, and then return to a familiar situation having changed and grown.

Life has that kind of circular quality to it.

Even now, I have a sense of returning to the things that brought me joy when I was younger: the ocean, music, art; a desire for horizons, space and stillness.

We all come back to where we began eventually, either literally or figuratively, but older and wiser, and hopefully with a truly remarkable story to tell.

Syria talks lead to tension US President Donald Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have discussed their security concerns in north-east Syria as US forces begin to withdraw.

The telephone call came after tensions were inflamed by a threat from Trump to “devastate” the NATO ally’s economy if Ankara attacks US-backed Kurds in Syria.

Trump stressed “the importance to the United States that Turkey does not mistreat the Kurds and other Syrian Democratic Forces with whom we have fought to defeat Isis,” a White House statement said.

The Turkish presidency said in a statement that the two men spoke about the possibility of establishing a safe zone in Syria.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu earlier scolded Trump, telling a press conference in Ankara that “strategic partners do not communicate via Twitter and social media”.

“Our channels are open,” Cavusoglu said, adding that Trump has called Erdogan twice to talk about the need to co-ordinate the withdrawal of US troops from Syria with Turkey.

Turkey’s top diplomat attributed Trump’s conflicting statements to the “tremendous pressure ... especially from security agencies” on the US not to withdraw. “We know the latest tweet was a domestic policy message,” he added.

Trump’s suggestion of a safe zone had in fact first been proposed by Erdogan, said Cavusoglu.

“Threatening Turkey economically leads to nowhere,” he added.

Washington has relied on Kurdish forces as the most ef-

fective in the fight against Islamic State in Syria.

Ankara considers Syrian Kurdish militias – such as the People’s Protection Units (YPG), which controls large areas of northern Syria on the border with Turkey – to be an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) waging an insurgency within Turkey.

Last month, Erdogan said Turkey was delaying its planned military offensive in northern Syria but warned it was not “an open-ended waiting period.”

Tom Cruise has revealed two Mission: Impossible films are in development.

The actor revealed the details of the upcoming movies on Twitter, sharing a video showing the franchise’s logo with fuses burning at either side. Cruise wrote in the caption: “Summer 2021 and Summer 2022.” Christopher McQuarrie will be returning to direct the films, having previously worked on 2015’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and last year’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

McQuarrie, who is also working with Cruise on the upcoming Top Gun sequel, tweeted to confirm his involvement.

Hillsborough trial jury selected The trial has begun for a former senior police officer accused of gross negligence manslaughter of 95 Liverpool fans at Hillsborough on April 15, 1989.

David Duckenfield, 74, who was Hillsborough match commander, appeared in Preston Crown Court alongside former Sheffield Wednesday club secretary Graham Mackrell, who is charged with contravening the stadium’s safety certificate and a health and safety offence.

The hearing began shortly after 11am on Monday with the selection of the jury.

About 100 potential jurors

were asked to fill in questionnaires that asked if they were supporters of Liverpool, Everton, Sheffield Wednesday or Nottingham Forest football clubs and whether they or close family members or friends had ever been police officers or been employed by the police, Crown Prosecution Service, Independent Police Complaints Commission or any criminal justice agency.

The two defendants, who both wore suits and sat alongside solicitors, were asked to stand so the panel could see whether they recognised them and a list of witnesses to be

called was read out.

Fourteen family members sat in court. Other relatives of the 96 victims watched from a court annexe while some were able to watch via videolink at the Cunard building in Liverpool.

Duckenfield previously appeared via videolink to enter a not guilty plea to the charge of gross negligence manslaughter.

Under the law at the time, there can be no prosecution for the death of the 96th victim, Tony Bland, as he died more than a year and a day after his injuries were caused.

Mackrell, 69, is charged with contravening a term or condition of the stadium’s safety certificate, by failing to agree the methods of admission for the match, and failing to discharge a duty under the Health and Safety Act by not taking reasonable care in respect of arrangements for admission and the drawing up of contingency plans.

Ninety-six men, women and children died in the crush in pens at the Leppings Lane end of the Sheffield Wednesday ground at the match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

Chris Pratt to marry Actor Chris Pratt and and Katherine Schwarzenegger have become engaged after a whirlwind romance. Pratt posted a photo of his 29-year-old partner sporting an engagement ring on Instagram. He wrote, “Sweet Katherine, so happy you said yes!” There’s no word on when and where the wedding will take place.

More Saudi women could flee – Saudi refugee A Saudi woman accepted as a refugee in Canada has said in a television interview that she expected her experience would inspire other women to flee her homeland.

Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun, 18, told the ABC in Toronto that she hoped the international attention on her flight from oppression in Saudi Arabia will be a catalyst for change.

“I think the number of women fleeing from the Saudi administration and abuse will increase, especially since there is no system to stop them,” Alqunun said.

“I’m sure that there will be a

lot more women running away.

I hope my story encourages other women to be brave and free. I hope my story prompts a change to the law, especially as it’s been exposed to the world.

This might be the agent for change,” she added.

Alqunun fled her family while visiting Kuwait before flying to Bangkok. Once there, she barricaded herself in an airport hotel to avoid deportation and tweeted about her situation.

Late last week, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that Canada would accept Alqunun as a refugee.

Several other countries, including Australia, had been in talks with the UN’s refugee agency to accept Alqunun before she flew to Canada.

Her situation has highlighted the cause of women’s rights in Saudi Arabia, where several women fleeing abuse by their families have been caught trying to seek asylum abroad in recent years and returned home.

Alqunun said she felt “like I was born again” when she was met at Toronto airport by Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland.

“It was something amazing.

There was a lot of love and hospitality, especially when the minister welcomed me and told me I was in a safe country and had all my rights,” Alqunun said.

Alqunun said she was upset by news that her family had issued a statement saying they disowned her.

When asked why she had fled her homeland, Alqunun replied: “I wanted to be free from abuse and depression. I wanted to be independent. I wouldn’t be able to marry the person I wanted to. I couldn’t get a job without permission.”

But even if the law is tweaked so e-scooters can legally ride in cycle lanes, that still leaves the problem that there are relatively few cycle lanes, and budgets are tight.

Darby said one solution would be a levy charged on every Lime ride, with money from the e-scooter tax going into an infrastructure fund.

The North Shore ward representative said that model is already operational in several US cities.

“Lime are very willing to do that.

I’ve spoken to them already,” he said.

Darby says his committee will consider reports currently being compiled by AT and council licensing staff once Lime’s trial wraps up on March 31.

Mandatory helmets have also been tabled, and could be included in any law change initiated by Twyford. Darby says he is personally opposed to the idea, however. He said the Netherlands has the highest

density of cyclists in the world, but also the lowest injury and death rate per thousand riders. Proper cycle lanes and awareness were the most important factors, he said.

Lime co-founder and chief executive Toby Sun has said his company targets a ratio of one e-bike or scooter for every hundred citizens in a city – implying 15,000 or 16,000 Limes for Auckland.

The US-based startup is allowed 1000 scooters under its trial licence.

Would Darby be up for increasing that 15-fold? He said more information is needed. One possibility was a higher density of scooter in inner suburbs, where demand would likely be highest.

One thing he was sure of was that Lime scooters (and those from any competitors) should be parked in special corals rather than left anywhere.

He noted that one car park space on Auckland’s Queen St could accommodate 10 Limes.

“We need to move quite quickly to reallocate some road space in favour of e-scooters,” he said. – NZME

Food prices rise in December Food prices lifted on the year in December as a tumble in fruit and vegetable prices was offset by increases in other products like eggs.

Food prices increased 1.0 per cent on the year in December, Stats NZ said. Fruit and vegetable prices were down 6.1 per cent as more favourable growing conditions boosted supply and lowered prices.

Prices of kumara and pumpkins reached record highs in late 2017.

These vegetables were 39 and 51 per cent cheaper, respectively, in

December than they were a year earlier.

Lettuces were 21 per cent cheaper than in December 2017 and avocado prices were 26 per cent lower in December than a year earlier.

Meat, poultry and fish prices, however, increased 3.8 per cent. Grocery food prices increased 1.4 per cent while restaurant and ready-to-eat food prices increased 2.9 per cent.

According to Stats NZ, the price of eggs reached a record high, with prices up 10 per cent on the year.

Food prices fell 0.2 per cent from November but after seasonal adjustment they rose 0.5 per cent, Stats NZ said.

Fruit and vegetable prices fell 1.1 per cent on the month, while meat, poultry and fish prices rose 0.2 per cent. Grocery food prices, meanwhile, were up 0.1 per cent while restaurant and read-to-eat food prices rose 0.2 per cent.

The food price index accounts for about 19 per cent of the consumers price index.

The terms of Lime’s extended trading licence in Auckland have just been made public.

And not only does the e-scooter startup get a 10-week extension of its trial, but a new provision allows it to expand from “tier one” areas to tier two and tier three areas – or every suburb in the city.

Councillor Chris Darby an enthusiastic Lime user himself, says he’s still making up his mind about how competing demands for new transport options and road safety should be balanced.

There have been 655 e-scooter ACC injury claims since the e-scooters launched in Auckland in October last year and later in Christchurch and the Hutt Valley. The cost of injuries to date is $228,364.

Mayor Phil Goff has floated the idea of a 10km/h speed limit as a condition of Lime gaining a permanent trading licence.

But a net 53 per cent say skilled labour has become harder to find, up from 44 per cent last quarter, and 35 per cent report difficulties in hiring unskilled staff, up from 29 per cent.

Business confidence improved somewhat in the December quarter but still remains deeply pessimistic, the latest quarterly survey of business opinion by the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research shows.

However, firms’ views of their businesses’ prospects in the next three months nudged upwards into positive territory, reflecting improving demand.

A net 18 per cent of businesses still expect business conditions to worsen over the next six months, although that’s significantly better than the net 28 per cent expecting worsening conditions in the previous quarter. That had been the worst reading since March 2009.

Now, a net 17 per cent now expect their own business activity will pick up in the next three months, up from 11 per cent three months ago, and a net 4 per cent reported an actual improvement in the December quarter, up from zero last quarter.

Pessimists and optimists are netted off against each other to produce the overall index figures.

Make burgers at home While a hamburger from a takeaway might fit the bill late at night, there’s a whole lot more to the meat in a bun meal than fast food.

Homemade hamburgers can be elevated to almost gourmet status if good quality meat is used and additional ingredients are chosen to complement the main ingredient.

Banging good pork burgers

Basic beef burger

Lamb and spinach burger

500g beef mince 1/2 red onion, finely chopped 2t Worcestershire sauce 1T tomato sauce 1C fresh breadcrumbs Handful fresh herbs, chopped 2t grainy mustard Sliced cheese: cheddar, gruyère, blue, feta Coleslaw Wholegrain mustard Beetroot

Cheesy burgers 500g beef mince 1C fresh breadcrumbs 2 slices of bread made into crumbs 1/2 onion, finely chopped 1t mixed herbs 1/2 t salt 1/4 C tomato sauce 1t soy sauce 2t Worcestershire sauce 1t beef stock powder 1 egg 6T grated tasty cheese Buns and salad for serving

400g lamb mince 40g pine nuts 40g fresh spinach Sliced gherkins Your favourite chutney Lettuce or rocket leaves Tomatoes ■ In a large bowl, gently mix together mince, pine nuts and spinach.

■ Season with salt and pepper to taste.

■ Shape into patties of similar size and thickness (about 2cm thickness).

■ Dust lightly with flour to prevent sticking.

■ Cook on a very hot grill for 8–10 minutes, turning once halfway through cooking time.

■ Serve on toasted buns with chutney, gherkins, lettuce or rocket and tomatoes.

■ In a large bowl, gently mix together mince, onion, sauces, breadcrumbs and herbs.

■ Season with salt and pepper to taste.

■ Shape into patties of similar size and thickness (about 2cm thickness).

■ Dust lightly with flour to prevent sticking.

■ Cook on a very hot grill for 8–10 minutes, turning once halfway through cooking time.

■ Add a thin slice of cheese to the top of a patty during the last minutes of grilling.

■ Serve on toasted buns, with mustard, coleslaw and beetroot.

Chicken burgers 225g fresh white (or panko) breadcrumbs 3 chicken breast fillets 6 eggs 1/2 t garlic powder (optional) Salt and pepper Vegetable or olive oil spray 3 burger buns or baps Fresh lettuce leaves Sliced fresh tomatoes Aioli or mayonnaise Tomato sauce ■ Preheat the oven to 190°C. ■ Place a large non-stick baking tray into the middle of the oven to warm up.

■ Cut each chicken breast into 3 even strips.

■ Pour the breadcrumbs onto a dinner plate and spread out evenly to about 5mm thickness.

■ In a bowl, whisk the eggs, adding the seasoning – and place in a shallow bowl.

■ Dip the chicken strips into the egg mixture and then into the breadcrumbs.

■ Repeat by dipping the chicken strips for a second time into the mix and crumbs to get an even thick coating.

■ Spray the tray with oil.

■ Place the chicken strips onto the hot baking tray.

■ Bake in the oven for approximately 10 minutes.

■ Spray the strips again with the oil, and return tray to the oven.

■ Cook until the chicken is golden brown and cooked through.

■ Split and warm the buns for 3 minutes in the oven (or toast separately in a toaster).

■ Place lettuce and sliced tomatoes on buns.

■ Add the chicken strips and finish with fresh aioli and/or tomato sauce.

QUICK MEAL 100g Homebrand gingernut biscuits, crushed to fine crumbs 50g butter, melted 150g mascarpone 150g cream cheese, softened at room temperature 150ml cream, whipped A few drops of vanilla essence 100g white chocolate, broken into small pieces Juice of 1/2 lemon 1/2 T powdered gelatine, melted in 1T boiling water 300g Signature Range frozen mixed berries, thawed 1T sugar serves.

■ Place the cheesecake base(s) in the fridge to set for about 20 minutes.

■ Meanwhile mix the mascarpone and cream cheese together until smooth. Fold the whipped cream and vanilla essence into the mix. Place aside.

■ Melt the chocolate in a heatproof

bowl over barely simmering water and mix until smooth.

■ Fold the lemon juice and melted gelatine into the chocolate. Then fold the chocolate mixture into the mascarpone cream mixture.

■ Gently fold in 100g mixed berries.

■ Pour the mixture into the spring form tin or individual tart rings and refrigerate until set, about 3 hours.

Mixed berry sauce ■ Blend 200g berries and sugar until smooth in a food processor.

■ Pass the mix through a sieve to remove any pips.

■ Keep the mix chilled in the fridge until ready to serve.

■ To serve your cheesecake, remove from the spring form tin.

■ Cut into slices and pour a little of the sauce around each slice of cheesecake.

Jesus double gets City home Gabriel Jesus has maintained his scoring spree for Manchester City with two goals in a 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Premier League.

The victory moved the champions back to within four points of leaders Liverpool.

Brazil striker Jesus has seven goals across three competitions in the past nine days for City.

His opening goal against Wolves was a 10th-minute tap-in after a left-wing cross from Leroy Sane, who was sent free by a

Real Sociedad have defeated Espanyol in Spain’s La Liga to hand new coach Imanol Alguacil a win in his first home game since taking charge of the team last month.

Willian Jose scored twice including the match-winning goal in the second half for the hosts. Espanyol levelled when Naldo Gomes scored on 32 minutes but Sociedad were not to be denied and Willian Jose scored from Merino’s cross on 63 minutes. Merino was sent off for a second bookable offence with 15 minutes left but Sociedad held on to move up to eighth.

India coach resigns India coach Stephen Constantine has resigned following his side’s Asian Cup elimination. India had their hearts broken by an injurytime penalty as Bahrain handed Constantine’s side a late 1-0 defeat that knocked them out of the tournament on Monday evening.

“I feel my cycle here is finished.

I have left the players here in a much better place than when I arrived,” Englishman Constantine said in an emotional post-match press conference.

Manchester United rejuvenated under new coach Manchester United’s league position hasn’t changed.

Everything else has under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Surpassing the great Matt Busby in 1946, Solskjaer has now opened his United reign with a club-record six successive victories after beating Tottenham 1-0 in the Premier League.

It was secured by Marcus Rashford’s first-half goal and 11 second-half saves by goalkeeper David de Gea. “I am just doing my job every single day here until the contract runs out at the end of June, I think,” Solskjaer said.

United remains sixth in the standings, just as it was when Jose Mourinho was fired last month.

But thanks to Arsenal’s struggles,

United is now behind the London club on goal difference.

Chelsea in the fourth and final Champions League place is only six points in front of United and Arsenal.

United is used to far loftier targets – winning the league a record 20 times – but it has failed to do so in the chaotic years since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

When Mourinho was fired last month, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino emerged as favourite as the long-term successor.

But Solskjaer is staking a strong claim to make his loan move from Molde permanent after winning this unofficial audition against Pochettino.

“It’s not ethical to talk about what he

is doing or what I [am] doing,” Pochettino said.

“It was a game and a battle between Tottenham and Manchester United, because if not, we would need to play him against me, one vs one on the pitch.”

Pochettino’s target is securing a fourth consecutive top-four finish to qualify for the Champions League in a season of disruption with the delay to move from Wembley to the club’s new stadium at White Hart Lane.

But Tottenham has now lost back-toback league home games for the first time since 2015 at the end of Pochettino’s first season.

The team remains third in the standings, a point ahead of Chelsea.

Neesham on the long road back Born again cricketer Jimmy Neesham has revealed the obsessions which contributed to his downfall and the way he managed to fight back.

A proud Neesham – in danger of becoming a forgotten man during a long Black Caps absence — burst back into World Cup calculations with a strong ODI series against Sri Lanka.

The highlight came in the first match, when he smashed 34 runs from a Thisara Perera over at Mt Maunganui.

The 28-year-old, who is playing for Wellington after spells with Auckland and Otago, admits he succumbed to mood swings which affected his performances and training in the past.

“Of course,” Neesham replied, when asked if he ever thought a Black Caps recall was beyond him.

“Anyone who spends 18 months out of a team and comes back and says I always believed I’d make it back is either a liar or an idiot.

“Of course it goes through your mind ... especially after getting left out of the Otago team last season.

“It was a long road back from there.

“I’m pretty proud of the last 18

months being able to get back up, dust myself off ... make it back for a pretty successful comeback against Sri Lanka.

“I’m proud of just doing the work. I made a bit of a pact with myself that no matter how I was feeling on a day, it didn’t matter if I I hated it if I was done or whatever ... just do the work and get it done and get out of here.

“I’ve been a good player and trainer when I feel like it, but not at other times when under the weather or not really feeling it.

“There’s certainly been a bit of a change over the past year or so.”

Neesham explained he had learned to enjoy the moment when on the field, even if another side emerged off it.

“I wasn’t nervous at all before the Sri Lanka series,” he said.

“In the past I’ve been quite self critical and anxious before games.

“I acted like the world was on my shoulders. It’s a cliche to say relax go out and have fun, but I genuinely didn’t really mind if I got runs or wickets.”

Neesham said he was still very conscious of taking a vital opportunity after replacing Colin de Grandhomme.

“In the past I was looking at the scoreboard every ball thinking I’ve got to get 30-plus to guarantee my spot in the next series.

“You can’t have a slog like I did in first game without being more carefree.”

A mental skills coach recommended by the players’ associa-

tion had played a big part in the turnaround.

“She was very good at bringing things into perspective with techniques to stay relaxed and focused on the present, something I’d never explored before,” he said.

“With Wellington, it is how you feel rather than what you are doing technically ... that has helped me stay in the present.

“This will sound like mumbo

jumbo to people who don’t understand but it helps you stay focused and concentrate on what is important.”

When asked about his batting average against Sri Lanka, Neesham made a confession of sorts in saying it was 123.

“I know not only what I am averaging, I know what other people are averaging,” he said.

“I can’t really escape that, it’s just how my brain works.

“I think it’s a case of being able to quieten that mind when you get out there. Obviously your brain will catch up with all that crap after the game.”

Radio Sport Breakfast host Kent Johns commented that Neesham sounded like a changed man.

“I know people in the New Zealand cricket community have anguished over Jimmy Neesham,” Johns said. “(they say) he’s good good enough to be in the team, all he needs to do is get his head straight, to put in more of an effort.

“Something has fallen into place, he now gets what is required to be a professional cricketer.

“He’s changed and he probably had to.”

Razor eyes overseas stint One of the country’s leading coaches – and a strong candidate to replace Steve Hansen at the All Blacks later this year – has admitted that he could be lost to New Zealand in the near future.

After back-to-back Super Rugby titles, Crusaders coach Scott Robertson is a man in demand and despite being close to re-signing with the franchise the 44-year-old says he could be tempted to leave.

“I’ve got some stuff I want to finish off with the Crusaders first, but I would also love to coach overseas, to go to another environment, and test yourself and your philosophy – that would be a really great challenge,” Robertson said.

“To coach in France is a dream of mine. I played there for a reason – so I could learn the language and learn the culture and the way they do things.”

through the ranks coaching the Sumner club, being a part-time assistant and then full-time head coach at Canterbury, and now Crusaders head coach with a perfect Super Rugby record – told the Herald in December he was expecting to sign a new deal with the franchise soon.

“It’s obviously my home, so all those factors come into play but I love the team and I love the players,” he said of his willingness to stay at Christchurch’s Rugby Park.

“It’s probably the first time in my whole career that I feel I can negotiate.”

Roberston’s passion for coaching and success have put his name in the frame as the next All Blacks head coach after Hansen announced he would be stepping down after the World Cup in Japan.

With Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt seemingly ruling him-

self out of the race, Robertson could be contending for the top job with the likes of Ian Foster, Warren Gatland, and Vern Cotter.

Robertson said though he would be keen on the position at some stage, out of respect for Hansen and the Crusaders he is wary about publicly revealing too much.

He was a crucial part of the team that won three titles in a row between 1998 and 2000 – which is still the only franchise to do so – and incredibly he is in with a good chance of doing it again as a coach.

The Crusaders take on the Blues in their season-opener at Eden Park on February 16.

“Trying to win a third title could be a burden, or you could make it about having great fun and doing something special,” Robertson said.

In brief

There’s no substitute for sheer speed

T

here was a time many years ago that I fancied myself as a bit of a pace bowler on the local cricketing scene here in Mid Canterbury.

Now, thanks in large to the addition of a few kilograms, a whole new level of unfitness and a genuine desire to not over exert myself too much, I think I’d struggle to build up enough steam to get the ball to the other end of the pitch, but a lad is still allowed to live in the past, right?

Most Saturdays you would have found me ripping in from the pavilion end out at Lauriston, pelting down almost unplayable bullets at some of the best batting names in the district in the hope of snaring a wicket or two to help Lauriston to victory.

Perhaps I stretch the truth a little there on the unplayable line.

If I’d had a school report done on my opening bowling efforts it would have most likely said; Matthew shows promise, but his behaviour is erratic, and he can at times be uncontrollable.

It didn’t matter to me, though.

I felt like Heath Davis – peroxide blonde hair and all and would tear in as fast as I could and just hope I managed to put the ball in the right spot.

I was lucky enough at one point to get a trip over to the incredible cricket facility at Lincoln and was put through the paces in a bowling workshop there – including getting the speed-radar put on my efforts.

121km per hour was my max.

And boy did I feel dynamite when those numbers flashed up.

Truth of the matter was that while quick for a mere club cricketer, it was by no means lightning quick.

There were faster bowlers around the district.

Richard Print was steaming back then, Dean Harrison could still rocket them down and a few of the Tech boys could still put the fear of God into you if they pitched one a bit short.

Speed was always the key though.

If you had a quick bowler in your arsenal who could fire them down at an intimidating rate, you had a good chance of knocking over most batsmen in the district.

Especially if they could bowl it straight.

There were good batsmen around then, but even they found out-and-out pace a bit of a struggle to deal with.

While a world apart – there’s some real similarity in the international cricketing scene and the capabilities of a cricketing side who hold the presence of a genuine quick – one who can bowl around or in excess of the 150km per hour mark.

So, thinking about all this last week while watching Lachie Ferguson pelt them down at the Sri Lankan batsmen, it was great for a New Zealand cricket follower to be able to revel in the fact, we’ve got one of those potent weapons on our side for a change.

And now might just be the time to unleash him.

With a visit from the run-plundering Indian side just around the corner and despite our current form, we’re really going to need some points of difference.

Tim Southee is a great test bowler, but his pace is lacking and it’s surely now time for him to move aside in the shorter forms of the game and allow someone like Ferguson to gain valuable experience against a world-class batting line up ahead of the World Cup. At 150km/h you’ve got more chance of luring a false shot or a mistake from a guy like Virat Kohli than you do at Southee’s maximum pace and although a small gamble, surely now is the time to chance the arm, so to speak.

Then again, if they’re really stuck – I’m sure I could get back out there.

The only problem is that I think I’m out of hair dye.

Serena in ruthless form

By Darren Walton Serena Williams treated herself to less than an hour on Rod Laver Arena in an emotional return to the scene of her greatest grand slam triumph yesterday.

In a ruthless start to her quest for a historic 24th career major, Williams cast sentiment aside to sweep past good friend, neighbour and fellow tennis mum Tatjana Maria 6-0 6-2 on Tuesday.

The match was the American superstar’s first on RLA since beating older sister Venus while pregnant in the 2017 final.

“It was nice to be back out there.

Last time I was out there was a great moment, especially internally for me, it was even a better moment,” Williams said.

“It was literally the best win of my career.”

But, as much as she savoured her return, Williams didn’t want to leave 16-month-old daughter Olympia waiting much more than the 49 minutes it took to see off the German.

“Spending a lot of time with my daughter, that’s the priority for me,” said the former world No.1.

“As a working mum, I feel guilty.

“And I understand that that’s normal, but these are years I’ll never get back.

Options for Pat’s Delight Trainer Cran Dalgety has hinted Pat’s Delight could start in the Hunter Cup ahead of the Chariots Of Fire.

The New Zealand four-yearold warmed up for his Chariots Of Fire campaign by winning the Shepparton Cup over the weekend.

Dalgety will attempt to qualify Pat’s Delight for the Sydney feature by winning next week’s A$100,000 Four-Year-Old Bonanza at Melton.

The trainer has not ruled out scrapping plans to get to the Chariots Of Fire in further Sydney qualifiers and instead stay in Victoria for a Hunter Cup tilt.

“If he were to get beat we would have to go to Sydney, but the Hunter Cup is on the back doorstep a week later.”

“So, there are a few options to work through.”

The Four-Year-Old Bonanza will not be an easy race to win, even for the highly talented Pat’s Delight.

He is set for an epic clash with fellow Kiwi Spankem and star Victorian pacer Ride High.

Dalgety credited a brilliant drive from champion reinsman Gavin Lang as a key factor in Pat’s Delight’s Shepparton Cup win.

The pacer emerged as the fresh horse on the scene in the straight after Lang stayed out of the war his Australian rivals were waging before the home turn.

“In the pre-race interview with Rebecca Bartley, who was driving San Carlo, she said we are going to make this in to a staying race.

“So, we thought this is going to be good.”

Lang found the one-one for Pat’s Delight after the early burn

and they stayed there for much of the race.

When Our Uncle Sam launched a big run in the back straight the last time, Lang made a crucial decision to stay there and risking being pocketed.

While it may have made some of the punters that backed Pat’s Delight in to favouritism a little nervous, it quickly turned out to be a masterstroke.

“He could have gone in front of Our Uncle Sam, but he didn’t.

“Gavin obviously knew the

tempo, because they went a 27.4sec quarter there.”

Pat’s Delight should gain plenty of improvement from his Shepparton Cup win after enjoying a quiet time following his fifth placing in last month’s Interdominion Pacing Final.

Dalgety was with Pat’s Delight until Tuesday last week, when Nathan Purdon took over caring for the horse.

Trainer Chris Waller has nominated seven high-profile horses for the inaugural All-Star Mile at Flemington but champion Winx is not among them. With 10 of the 14 places in the March 16 race to be decided by public vote, Waller says he and Winx’s owners have decided it would not be fair to enter the mare when she was unlikely to run. He said if circumstances changed and something went wrong with Sydney plans, they could seek one of four wild card entries.

Excelsior returning Connections of New Zealand-bred stakes performer True Excelsior are hoping a return to her homeland will result in the addition of a valuable Group One victory to her record.

The Leon and Troy Corstens-trained mare will line-up in the Gr.1 JR & N Berkett Telegraph (1200m) at Trentham on Saturday and her Melbourne-based conditioners said they are pleased with her ahead of her first New Zealand assignment.

“She travelled over very well, she looks well and is coming along really nicely,” Leon Corstens said.

“We lobbed here on Sunday morning and we are staying with Nigel Tiley at Pukekohe and she has settled in really well there.

“I have known Nigel for quite some time, I knew Nigel back when he used to ride.

“She’ll travel down to Wellington on Friday morning most likely.”

The multiple stakes-placed daughter

of Exceed and Excel ran third last-start in the Gr.3 Standish Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on New Year’s Day and her connections are hoping she can improve on that run on Saturday.

“She has held her form really well and I am hoping she will be right up there with them in this race,” Corstens said.

“Hopefully she handles the track well.

I’m really pleased with her.”

Bred in New Zealand by Sir Patrick and Lady Justine Hogan, True Excelsior was offered at New Zealand Bloodstock’s 2016 Premier Yearling Sale through Cambridge Stud’s draft where she was knocked down to the $450,000 bid of Rosemont Stud.

The Victorian farm, who have a significant interest in dual Group One winner Tarzino who stands at Westbury Stud in New Zealand, elected to make the trip across the Tasman in the hope of a lucrative breakthrough win at Group One level with their mare ahead of a breeding career.

Aussie rowers hit the lake

Rowers from a Perth school have hit the waters of Lake Hood amongst a tide of interest from outside parties in using the manmade lake as a training facility.

Twenty-four students from John XXIII College arrived in New Zealand last Sunday, and have been training on the water before making their way south to Lake Ruataniwha for the Canterbury Championships.

for Christchurch and Twizel and has much better rowing facilities than Christchurch,” Total Tours NZ’s Phil Robson said.

“They get in and we encourage them to spend a day in Christchurch with the rowing folk up there before coming down here to train ahead of the Canterbury Championships.

“It is fantastic and the Ashburton Rowing Club and Justin (Wall)

have really built a good reputation and a high level of performance here.”

Robson said most groups look to visit the North Island, but they are really wanting more groups to visit the South Island and Canterbury.

“Everytime they come they always say it is a great experience,” he said.

Justin Wall said interest was starting to increase for rowing training on Lake Hood.

“The last group we had were here in October last year,” he said.

“We have also been getting interest from Christchurch schools wanting to have their summer training camps here.

“We are going to have a real opportunity in the future when the second lake is completed and this

side is a non-powered lake to host more things like this.”

Wall said that an increase in viable, cheap accommodation for large school groups was also adding appeal for the Ashburton District.

“The cost of going to the venues like Ruataniwha can be quite expensive, especially with accommodation over the summer months,” he said.

Viviani wins Tour first stage Australian sprint ace Caleb Ewan and Italian cycling star Elia Viviani have had a dramatic reversal of fortunes in stage one of the Tour Down Under.

Two days after Ewan won the Down Under Classic, he was nowhere to be seen in the sprint finish yesterday at Port Adelaide.

Viviani unleashed a superbly timed sprint to win the stage, after a crash took him out of contention at the Classic.

The Italian ace also takes the overall lead for the first time at the Tour Down Under after winning a stage in the 2018 race.

“When you start the WorldTour

season with the stage win and the leader’s jersey here in Tour Down Under, it’s the best way,” Viviani said.

“Now we know we’ve done a good job during the winter – that’s the question we’ve already answered.”

Ewan was primed for stage one,

but the new Lotto-Soudal team leader was never in the hunt for the final sprint.

Three-time world champion Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) was another stage win contender yesterday who was not sighted in the sketchy sprint finish.
