‘Risky apparatus’ not welcome

Mermaid tails are not welcome at the EA Networks Centre due to safety concerns.

A popular type of aquatic toy that mimics the look of a mermaid, users can slip into the fin as if putting on a skirt and their legs are bound together within the tail fin.

Available in a range of different colours and designs, the tails give the illusion of a mermaid swimming in water.

EA Networks Centre manager Steve Prescott said he would be reluctant to let anyone at the pool use the toy.

While not as dangerous for older, stronger swimmers, they were most certainly a safety hazard for children, he said.

Restricting a child’s legs when swimming was very dangerous.

“When they go under they normally use their legs [to kick] and if you restrict their legs they won’t be able to get themselves up again and they could potentially drown.”

Mr Prescott said swimmers would have to be very confident in the water to use such a “risky apparatus”.

“If I didn’t say ‘stop that’ I’d not be doing my job properly, it’s pretty risky.”

EA Networks Centre head swim coach Shane Jones agreed the toys were dangerous.

“I wouldn’t recommend them to any children really, unless they were a super confident swimmer in an adequate environment.”

Mr Jones said while he had yet to see anyone use them at the EA Networks Centre, he has seen them in action on other occasions.

“It’s pretty dangerous when you are taking the legs away from a child really.

High winds caused problems for motorists crossing the Rakaia Bridge yesterday morning.

The businesses are being sold by private tender and while the trust has had each valued, it is not disclosing possible sale prices.

Black market for ear tags

It was more difficult to pinpoint dates of the other thefts, Methven senior police constable Mike Seque said.

In an effort to eradicate bovine tuberculosis cattle cannot be legally moved from one farm to another, or killed in meatworks, without NAIT (National Animal Identification and Tracing) ear tags.

However, the system is not infallible when it comes to tracking animals, as they are easily replaced.

Ashburton senior sergeant Scott Banfield said this has created a black market for NAIT tags.

“My understanding is they are quite easy to put on and remove,” he said.

Fears of a strong black market for cattle ear tags has prompted a warning from police.

It comes after a recent spate of stock thefts in Mid Canterbury.

In early December 36 in-milk kiwi cross cows were trucked off Jill and David Quigley’s farm near Mayfield.

Soon after, 52 friesian bull calves were reported missing from an Alford Forest property, closely followed by 17 dairy cows from a Hinds farm.

Milking records established the Quigleys’ cattle were trucked off the property overnight on two separate occasions between December 7-9.

“These tags have become quite valuable.”

He urged farmers to review access to NAIT tags, in particular keeping large numbers of NAIT tags on hand for easy access, and consider locking them up in an effort to stymy stock rustling.

Meanwhile, police continue to work closely with people in the industry to track the missing livestock.

Mr Banfield said it was crucial people in rural areas remained alert to suspicious behaviour, noted down details of vehicles, and called the police.

“If there is no answer or reply police are busy but we will get back to them as soon as we can,” he said. “We will act on it.”

Ashburton residents may have noticed they could not call straight through to the Ashburton police station for the past few months.

This is because anyone phoning the station could have their call picked up by another station around the country.

Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield, of Ashburton, said this was implemented nationally in November as a way to make police more accessible to those in the community.

“Police now have a virtual telephone system.”

The reason for this new strategy was that calls have increased over the country and staff in certain small stations struggle to answer every phone call.

“This system has helped.”

On days the Ashburton station only has a small number of staff on they might not always be around to answer the phone, so this way people always get to talk to someone straight away, he said.

New focus, better returns

The Ashburton Trust might be planning to sell off five of its hospitality businesses, but the trust itself will still be in the business of giving money back to the community, its board chairman Alister Lilley says.

On Tuesday it announced it would sell its businesses, but retain ownership of all of the real estate.

The change in focus, however, would not change the legislative need for a publicly elected trust board of six members and it would not change the return of money to the community from gaming machines, Mr Lilley said.

It would be stipulated in any sale that machines must be retained and that the trust’s charitable foundation would continue to distribute funds to

community organisations, he said.

“It’s critical we protect that.”

If deals are clinched to sell the Tinwald Tavern and Tinwald Motels, Speight’s Alehouse, The Somerset Grocer and the Hotel Ashburton, the trust would be able to look at new options for investing in the community and at better returns to the community, he said.

“Our focus will then be on investment opportunities. It could be we’d look at something like investing in a hydroslide for the EA Networks Centre, if the board decided that’s what was needed.

“We’d be in the position to do that after the sale, or we could partner with someone, perhaps outside the district who wanted to invest in something for the community.”

In struggling to turn a profit,

the Ashburton Licensing Trust is in good company; a 2014 report by the Auditor General shows that more than three-quarters of New Zealand’s 19 trusts are in the same situation.

Some, including Ashburton, have incurred losses for several years and many have been struggling since the 1990s.

Mr Lilley said that report raised a number of red flags for all trusts and the Ashburton board had taken those into consideration when it was looking at its future direction.

“We’ve been very conscious of this report and we’re not the first trust to go down this line. We’re managing the process now instead of someone managing it for us down the track. We wanted to be on the front foot.”

Individually each of the trust’s businesses were good business-

es, but the high overheads a trust carried because of legislative requirements meant any profits made were quickly eroded as part of its bigger financial picture, Mr Lilley said.

“If you take away the structure of a licensing trust the models in their own right with new owners will be successful because they won’t carry the same compliance costs. The businesses are all individually making money.”

While the model of landlord and business operator might have served the trust well in the past, the market had changed, consumer expectations had changed and the trust had to change if it was to survive, he said.

The businesses will be listed for sale from next month, but the trust was certainly not in a ‘fire sale’ position, he said.

They’re starting younger

A pedal-powered pub has been spotted rolling through downtown Auckland. Video of the beer bike, which emerged on Facebook this week, shows a group of young people powering the vehicle from Customs Street West on to lower Albert Street. The party bike consists of a long bar with a wooden keg at the front. Patrons sit on either side of the bar on stools fitted with pedals, while the presumably sober driver sits at a wheel at the head of the bar.

Pedal pubs emerged in Europe in the late 1990s and have become popular in the United States.

Ten hurt in crash Ten people have been injured after a collision involving two cars and a truck near Taupo. Emergency services were called to State Highway 1, just south of Taupo, at 2pm. Fire Service spokesman Steve Smith said that 10 people were injured. Eight have status four or minor injuries and the other two have been taken to hospital in a more serious condition. The southbound lane of SH1 was blocked for some time after the crash.

By KirSty wyNN New Zealand’s youngest offender on police files is a 3-year-old accused of the theft of a teddy bear.

Details released under the Official Information Act show under-5s questioned by police had committed offences of theft and property damage.

Offences include a 3-year-old from Counties Manukau who allegedly stole a teddy bear from a supermarket.

The child was with family in the store when the toy was found in the child’s stroller. The parents denied any wrongdoing and said the child must have taken the toy.

Other crimes committed by children include a 4-year-old smashing a fire alarm at a shopping centre and another being part of a group that smashed cladding on a garage.

The figures also detail an 11-year-old in Auckland who allegedly committed an aggravated robbery, a 10-year-old for indecently assaulting a young female and another for exhibiting an objectionable publication.

Under the Crimes Act no person can be convicted of an act committed under the age of 10.

Those aged 12 and 13 can be charged if their offending has become very serious or persistent. Ten and 11-year-olds can only be charged with murder or manslaughter.

The country’s oldest offenders were mainly apprehended for driving offences. A 92-year-old from Waikato was charged with disturbing use of a telephone and a 91-year-old in the central region for common assault.

Man hit by train dies A man has died after being hit by a train in Mt Wellington. The incident happened near Abattoir Lane just after 2pm. Police said the victim was a 35-year-old man.

The incident was attended by all emergency services and the matter has been referred to the coroner.

Boy nearly drowns

A 7-year-old boy was flown to Auckland Starship Hospital in critical condition after nearly drowning at Palm Springs Thermal Pool in Parakai, north of Auckland yesterday. Police, ambulance and the fire service raced to the scene of the incident, which happened at 10.50am, and administered first aid until the boy was transferred to hospital at 12.30pm. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called at 11am and arrived to find the boy in cardiac arrest. After working on him for an hour, paramedics managed to get the boy’s heart started again.

A Westpac Rescue Helicopter paramedic who attended the incident said the boy was with his family. “We worked on him for an hour and we started his heart again but he’s still very, very sick.”

Promoter Jackie Sanders said persistent rain yesterday meant it was unsafe to hold the Red Red Wine Vineyard Concert at Waitiri Creek Winery in Gibbston as planned.

A last-ditch attempt to hold the concert indoors at the Queenstown Events Centre failed because of capacity restrictions at the Frankton venue.

Doors would also not have been able to open until about 9.30pm to enable the production crew to set up the venue.

The band is due to play in Canterbury today and Auckland tomorrow, so the concert could not be postponed.

Ms Sanders said everyone associated with the concert was “gutted” with the decision, but the band was determined to play Queenstown and would look to return in 2017.

Sky’s the limit for teen mum

When seventeen-year-old Nikita Ritchie checked her NCEA results online on Wednesday she was incredibly proud and had every reason to be.

The Ashburton teenager passed Level 2, has a beautiful daughter and has a promising career ahead of her.

Nikita, whose daughter Jaylah turns one on Tuesday, wants other young mothers to know that it is possible to raise a child and get an education.

“I want to encourage other young mums.”

At the age of 15 the Ashburton College student never expected to have to start thinking about nappies, bottles and babies.

She was terrified when she first found out she was pregnant in Term 2 of Year 11 and hid it from everyone.

However, rumours started to spread around school and her mum Tania Ritchie caught wind of it.

Mum’s been really helpful. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without family support and school support.

and even took her eldest to the doctor to be tested but never expected it to be her youngest.

“I noticed from the morning sickness.

“I was a bit disappointed and a bit shocked but once we got over the shock it started to get exciting.”

The first thing the pair did was to tell the school, who encouraged Nikita to stay and continue her education.

She hadn’t planned on going back to school straight after Jaylah was born in January 2015 but decided to go back part-time, as she had some Level 2 credits car-

ried over from the year before.

The school accommodated this, offered support such as counselling and her teachers were always available to help her even outside of school time, Nikita said.

She knows a few people at Ashburton College who have got pregnant and left school but noone who has stayed at school with a child, although her teachers have said it has happened in the past.

Her main line of support has been her mother who looks after Jaylah while Nikita is at school or work (part-time at Countdown).

This year she will look after Jay-

lah during the day because the seventeen-year-old is going back to school full time to complete Year 13.

“Mum’s been really helpful.

“I wouldn’t have been able to do it without family support and school support.”

Even with this additional help she found last year difficult but made sure to push through and work hard so she can go to university.

“I did struggle a lot last year.

“But I want to be able to get my education so I can better Jaylah’s future.”

After high school she plans to study for a career in physical education, possibly as a PE teacher or a personal trainer.

Jaylah’s dad is also in the picture, he is in a relationship with Nikita and sees his daughter regularly. The 19-year-old has finished school and is working full time.

Being a young mum has not been easy, partly because of the extra workload with looking after a baby, going to school and having a part-time job but also because of the judgement she has

received.

Nikita is used to walking down the street and hearing snide remarks, such as “I feel really sorry for that kid”.

She also can’t count the number of people who have told her she would not be able to have a child and stay at school.

“I can’t wait to prove everyone wrong who ever said I couldn’t.”

Tania said she is very proud of her daughter and knew having a child would not slow her down.

“She’s got too much to achieve.”

She will never forget the time when Nikita had to go on stage at her Year 11 prizegiving while seven months’ pregnant.

“A few people said to me that takes a lot of courage to do that. A lot of people admired her,” Tania said.

Even though balancing being a mum and a teenager has been difficult, Nikita said others in her position should know that if they work hard having a child will not stop them from achieving their goals.

“Everything’s possible if you put your mind to it.”

Teacher shortage hits home

A nationwide shortage of science, maths and technology teachers has made recruiting difficult for Mid Canterbury’s two high schools.

While Ashburton College and Mount Hutt College have filled all their vacancies for the beginning of this school year they did not find it easy.

Mount Hutt College principal John Schreurs said two teachers have had to temporarily come out of retirement to help the

school this year.

A Christchurch maths teacher has come out of retirement to work for eight weeks until their permanent employee starts and a technology teacher has also come out of retirement for a short time until the school finds a new one.

While maths, technology and science are a problem, there are certain disciplines within those that are more difficult to staff, such as physics and chemistry.

The two temporary staff will bring them to full capacity but

they had been working up until Christmas to complete the recruitment process, Mr Schreurs said.

They also had some late resignations from teachers who got jobs at other schools.

“We’ve managed to fill all our vacancies now.”

Being in a rural area made it difficult to find staff because although some people liked working in a more remote setting, others did not.

It also made it hard for them in terms of finding relief teachers

because there was a smaller pool of specialised teachers to cover classes, he said.

Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan said they also had difficulty because of the shortage but had filled all their vacancies at the end of last year.

“At the start of this year we are going to be fully staffed.”

While they would always get people applying for their positions there was not always an abundance of quality applicants which could make the process longer, he said.

A ban on all motor vehicles from the summit of Mt Eden, one of Auckland’s most popular tourist spots, will come into force next week. The ban, which takes effect on Wednesday, January 20, applies to all motor vehicles, including motorbikes and scooters. It implements the Maunga Authority’s April 2015 decision to extend a ban on heavy vehicles, including coaches, which was put in place in 2011.

The authority, which oversees Auckland’s volcanic cones, said the consideration of pedestrian safety, congestion and damage to the maunga had led to a “unanimous” decision.

“We also hope to crack open the ski scene in the winter – a lot of people stay in Methven, where there’s a lot of choice, but others can pull in off the road and have a plate of dumplings and a craft beer for a reasonable price,” Mr Brown said.

The bistro service is generally available from Thursday through to Saturday evening without bookings, but it pays to check in case a function has been booked.

Doctor pleads not guilty to forgery charges

A judge has declined media applications to photograph an award-winning Kiwi entertainer accused of sex offences against four women. The man, in his 40s, appeared in Auckland District Court in November where he pleaded not guilty to four counts of indecent assault and two of sexual violation. Judge Russell Collins yesterday declined applications to photograph the defendant at his upcoming appearance, stating there was “no public interest ... at this time in proceedings”. He will appear in court next week. According to charge sheets, the incidents took place between 2010 and 2013 in Auckland.

Award-winning Stronechrubie Restaurant’s recently added bistro bar is proving popular with diners.

Owners Madeline and Sean Brown, who have operated the destination al a carte restaurant at Mt Somers for the past decade, launched their new bistro menu in December.

Since taking over the business the Browns have racked up an impressive 10 Beef+Lamb New Zealand Excellence Awards. They aim to continue offering quality food at a reasonable price with the new service.

Already the move to open the bistro has proved popular with holidaymakers and locals alike, Mr Brown said.

“It gives people another option, not everyone wants to eat in the al a carte restaurant or at a tavern.”

The couple had been considering expanding the business for some time and had considered a range of premises, but at the end of the day Mr Brown’s grandfather sealed the deal during a visit to Mt Somers, suggesting they alter the existing premises to proceed with their plans.

A glass front offers superb mountain views, and can be opened up to create a fantastic indoor-outdoor dining experience, depending on the weather.

“We had it architecturally designed to encompass the view and we are really pleased with the result,” Mr Brown said.

He also denied using a document for monetary advantage and making a false statement or declaration.

His lawyer, Tony Shaw, said the man elected to have a trial before a judge, without a jury.

At Mr Shaw’s request, Judge Ian Mill ordered the man’s name

suppression to continue until the trial. Police did not oppose this.

Judge Mill said medical evidence before the court was enough to persuade him to continue the suppression order.

The man was arrested at Wellington Airport last year.

At the time, Whanganui DHB chief executive Julie Patterson said she “believed no patient has

been negatively affected by this doctor”.

“While employed by the WDHB, the doctor was under appropriate supervision, he was stood down immediately, concerns were identified and he is no longer in our employ.”

A trial date is yet to be set.

The man is due back in court in March.

A man fled into a dairy to escape another man who was chasing him armed with an axe handle in New Plymouth yesterday. Police were called to the incident at 1.15pm.

The male being chased managed to escape harm by running into a nearby dairy and was uninjured.

The alleged offender got into what was described as a silver Toyota Corolla and the vehicle was last seen heading towards the port area. New Plymouth Police said it appeared to be an isolated incident and the parties involved may be known to each other.

Blaze in restaurant Fire investigation officers sifting through the charred remains of a Hamilton eatery have made headway in their investigation.

However, Waikato fire safety officer Kevin Holmes said they were yet to determine the cause of yesterday’s blaze in the Domaine restaurant. Mr Holmes said they had managed to pinpoint the area of origin to the rear of the restaurant – however, that contains the kitchen, store room and office.

“We will be resuming our investigations today.”

Man stalked victim A man stalked a woman on a train before assaulting her as she walked home from the station in Auckland. The female victim was followed by a man “over a prolonged period of time” on Wednesday night, including on a train between Britomart and Middlemore Hospital, before she was grabbed from behind in Mangere at about 10.30pm.

She was walking home from Middlemore Station at the time and managed to escape after a short struggle.

Cancer survivor lashes out at bullies

Turning into and out of State Highway One in Tinwald is about to become a much safer exercise.

Next week the New Zealand Transport Agency is scheduled to start work on resealing a section of highway through Tinwald and when it is re-marked the central flush median strip will be widened to about three metres.

This is the first stage in the Ashburton District Council-Transport Agency Tinwald Corridor project, designed to improve traffic flows into Ashburton and to make it easier for traffic from the east and west to access the state highway.

A wider flush median would increase the ‘comfort’ factor for motorists who used the space, council roading manager Brian Fauth said.

It will also come accompanied by a change in turning bay hierarchy on the highway designed to encourage motorists to use Wilkin and Manchester streets differently.

“We’re trying to get traffic into the habit of using Wilkin Street if they’re wanting to turn right onto the highway to come into town but to use Manchester Street if they’re coming from the south and turning right off the highway into Tinwald East,” Mr Fauth said.

To encourage motorists to use

the two intersections differently, the right turn bay will be removed from the highway at Wilkin Street and relocated at Manchester Street.

As part of the remarking exercise, cycle lanes will be moved closer to the kerb and yellow nostopping lanes will be added to the left and right of Manchester Street.

While many motorists were not comfortable using flush medians, they were a safe way to access a busy highway and were widely used around New Zealand, Mr Fauth said.

“Their success lies in using the ‘merge like a zip’ system. You turn right into the hatched area,

indicate you’re turning into the line of traffic and keep moving until a gap opens up.”

With a 50 kilometre an hour speed limit through Tinwald, there was no excuse for motorists not allowing indicating traffic into the main flow of traffic, Mr Fauth said.

“This is just what happens in normal situations around New Zealand; it’s just unfortunate in our aggressive way of driving we often don’t let people in.”

When the flush median was re-marked there would be more than enough room to ensure motorists feel quite safe while they were merging into the main line of traffic, he said.

■ CANTERBURY

Strong winds wreak havoc Strong winds wreaked havoc in Canterbury yesterday, causing the cancellation of flights, lifted iron off roofs and temporarily silenced the international buskers festival.

Police urged motorists to take extreme care as galeforce winds of up to 100km/h battered the region, making for hazardous driving conditions.

More than 160 Canterbury residents were without power after strong gales battered the region.

Fire services responded to around a dozen call outs yesterday in relation to fallen trees and power lines.

Areas still experiencing outages include Belfast, Greenpark, Bankside, Killinchy and Motukarara.

The wind felled a central city tree which closed Armagh Street at the intersection of Park Terrace, and Park Terrace between

Armagh and Kilmore Streets.

A spokesman for the Christchurch Transport Operations Centre (CTOC) said the tree removal process would take most of the day.

“We have been advised that these roads won’t open until at least 6pm tonight,” he said.

Organisers of the World Busker’s Festival in Hagley Park were forced to cancel all performances during the day due to safety concerns, but confirmed the night shows would go ahead as scheduled.

People using streets around the rebuild in Christchurch were warned to keep watch for lose temporary traffic equipment like fences and cones being swept up in the wind.

A fresh warning was also issued for vehicles using the Rimutaka Hill, especially trucks and motorcycles yesterday.

lotte Fraser said it had been very, very windy - almost like a storm - yesterday.

“I was driving along with my windows down and a huge gust of wind blew leaves into my car,” she said.

“I also saw a cyclist who looked like he was going to come off his bike.

“He was biking really slowly and his front wheel kept going from left to right. He was really struggling.”

The last couple of hours had been particularly crazy, Ms Fraser said.

Jessica Campbell, who works in the city centre, said the wind had been loud.

“I’ve been inside most of the day but I could hear it, and I’ve heard people talking about it,” she said.

“It’s finished now. I went outside just before and there were leaves on the road and a lady

carrying a branch down Colombo Street.” Rachel Gaffaney, who works near Christchurch airport, said she had seen a few people struggling in the wind.

“I saw couple of people getting blown around,” she said.

“I haven’t come across anything fallen over but a couple of people at work have said they’ve seen branches down,” she said.

MetService recorded gusts of up to 45 kilometres an hour in Mid Canterbury early yesterday morning, but the winds had largely dropped off by 10am.

The district’s resource recovery parks were closed for most of the day as a precaution against flying debris.

Rainer Irrigation reported a “handful” of callouts to repair some minor damage to irrigators.

EA Networks did not return calls concerning power outages.

A leukaemia survivor has lashed out at bullies who “fat shamed” her twice in a day.

Waimate woman Kathy Schofield, who has a rare form of the cancer, said that she was using the outdoor exercise equipment at Caroline Bay in Timaru when a group of people yelled out at her from a car window.

She was later verbally abused outside a Waimate supermarket.

Schofield addressed the bullies in a heartfelt Facebook post.

“Hey FAT SHAMERS. To the girls in the car down at the bay when I was using the exercise equipment, shrieking with laughter and hollering out the window, and to the guys in the car at the supermarket making comments and vomiting noises when I walked past. I want you to know something. IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU.” She said she used to be a “skinny girl” before she got sick.

“I had a whole bunch of little strokes, then one massive one. I found out I have leukaemia. I take medication that makes me gain weight, gives me heart palpitations. I can’t ‘exert’ myself in case of further strokes. I have to be kept low in iron which exhausts me, makes me breathless. I struggle, daily, to hoist my big self around to have some semblance of a life.

Even with all that, I still try to do my best. To walk, eat well, to keep on keeping on,” she said.

“I wish I could have my old body and life back. I wish it every minute of every day. But I’m not really mad that I’m fat. It’s a direct result of wanting to live.”

She said she could tell that by the way the bullies reacted that they would never have survived what she went through.

“You think being fat is awful, you wanna try leukaemia? You stupid people, it could happen to you. Or maybe your mother, or sister, or girlfriend. How will you feel when someone moos at her?”

She added: “So I will keep struggling to exercise, and you can laugh all you like. I don’t need to lose anything. I already won.”

Women’s Health Action Trust director Julie Radford-Poupard said Schofield was “amazing” for speaking up.

“I think it’s really brave because often when people are bullied they internalise that and for her to come out and say ‘it’s not okay’, she sounds like an amazing woman.”

Come unto me all ye little It was a time when death came easy and the common cold could escalate until an entire household was vacated of life.

Children, as Nadine Porter found out, were all too often the statistics of the late 1800s.

I

n a scorched corner of the Ashburton cemetery there lies a lichen-covered concrete headstone that has been resolutely standing firm for over 130 years.

Plain but for the words etched upon it, the stone tells a heartbreaking truth for parents of that age.

It’s a story of loss, of tragedy and hidden pain.

Little Anna, Emma, John and George Ullyatt died before they reached adulthood. Their parents William and Mary, farmers at Methven, faced the unimaginable and harsh reality of living in the latter part of the 19th century when a cold was anything but a trifle and disease was a feared reaper, able to spread, coagulate and regroup among our early settlers.

Infant and child death was so prevalent in those times that those siblings that managed to escape its clutches often grew up not knowing that there were others in their family that never made it. It was after all, a part of life, and mothers simply had to move on, conceal their grief and continue their harsh home-life of heavy duties.

For the Methven couple their sorrow began when they lost their baby girl Anna when she was 19 months old and then three-yearold Emma just six months later.

John lived until he was 12, but died 10 days before George who was taken at age eight.

The brothers’ deaths so close together point to an infectious illness – a common thing at the time.

Epidemics were often the cause of death between 1880 and the 1900s and sometimes claimed entire families.

Perhaps the most tragic instance of an epidemic’s destruction within the Mid Canterbury community lies with Hugh and Eliza Rainey of Winslow in 1878.

At that time scarlet fever had been rampant in Dunedin for three years and seems likely to have spread north to Canterbury.

By 1882 the dreaded disease was spreading so rapidly in the Ashburton District that a local newspaper recorded that the South Rakaia School was closed.

But not before the Rainey family fell in its path.

It is inconceivable now, but Eliza was to lose five children within four weeks to the disease.

Nine-year-old William was the first to fall, followed by six-yearold Martha, 11-year-old Margaret and 16-year-old James. Finally Eliza’s baby, 18-month-old Mary died.

It seems likely the Raineys would have been quarantined within their house, as was the practice once the first child was diagnosed with scarlet fever, and so never stood a chance against the highly-contagious illness.

It was also an expensive illness, with families of the deceased advised to burn all clothes, bedding and other items a victim had come into contact with.

In Dunedin, authorities struggled to manage the disease and refused to allow stricken patients to be taken to hospital as they feared further spread. There were calls to quarantine sufferers on an island, but those calls were refused.

Various precautions and remedies were bandied around at the

time, including the outlawing of pigs within Christchurch city.

One cure for both smallpox and scarlet fever was trumpeted in the Otago Witness in 1877 – naively claiming it would save lives. Patients were told to take a concoction of sulphate of zinc, fox glove, sugar and water every hour.

None of it worked and cemeteries in Otago and Southland are decayed with the crepitus of the disease today.

Typhoid was another darkness, always lurking in the unsanitary conditions of towns, including Ashburton in the early 1880s.

Visiting any township in New Zealand back then would have been unpleasant, with foul odours from human waste pervading your nostrils. Poor sanitation was normal practice.

Ashburton was no different, with human waste dumped at a collection area on the river bed, which made its way into the Ashburton River. Methven had a large pile on a section close to town.

However, hygiene was better at Mt Somers, where they dug a hole and buried waste.

But in Ashburton drinking water was dirty and drainage an open arm to virulent and deadly bugs. And so typhoid was never far away from knocking on someone’s back door – and all too often it was the infants and children who fell.

A report from the Tuapeka Times in Otago in 1874 discussed

the difficulties facing authorities in Cromwell when it decimated the town. A doctor visiting the town reported sanitation was “deplorable”.

“The drainage and water supply were matters needing immediate attention.

“An examination into these matters showed facts and circumstances in connection with them that ought not to exist. All along the course of the waterrace supplying the town, I found closets above its level and in one instance a privy was really within two feet of the race.”

Diphtheria was one of the main causes of infant death in those times with various epidemics recorded throughout the South Island. An upper respiratory tract infection of the nose, throat and upper air passages, it is immunised against these days.

From P8 Back then it was often fatal as one local family was to find out.

William Rose lost four children within three weeks to the disease, with two dying on the same day.

He and his wife had already lost two-year-old Henrietta Ellen at the age of two in 1868 of unknown causes, so then to lose two-year-old Martha, nine-yearold Francis on the same day, four-year-old Enoch in 1874 and two-year-old Frederick just days later was unbearable.

Outbreaks were attributed to cats and unclean milk at the time and again remedies aplenty abounded, including taking a lump of fresh lime, boiling it and holding the affected child over the fumes until they opened their mouth.

Although not recorded, it seems likely that the district’s first recorded set of triplets may have perished to either scarlet fever, measles or diphtheria.

When born in 1882 the Moore triplets’ births were heralded in the Ashburton Guardian where it was noted that all were healthy, but

by January the next year

William, Edward and Charles were lost to their grieving parents William and Ada. But perhaps the cruellest deaths of all lay in the infants that died because of the poor health of mothers, complications from birth and the general harsh conditions of that time.

For a mother there was no certainty of continuing life once she was pregnant.

There were no operations nor scans to give an indication prior to problems occurring. Childbirth was a simple matter of life and death and, with a stiff upper lip, the women of the time, with no contraception, became brave warriors of a different age.

The Crooks family from Hampstead endured perhaps the most tragic set of circumstances of that time.

William and Anne would lose seven children in the space of 17

years – the last death the saddest of all.

Six of the children died between two days and seven months of birth. Most would have been from natural causes.

Their 13-year-old son William, therefore, would have been a great blessing to Anne until he died in a tragic horse and dray accident.

The accident was reported in the Ashburton Guardian at the time where great sympathy was expressed for the bereaved parents, especially for Anne “who had long been an invalid”.

Life was a cherished gift, but death was also an accepted reality and grief was secret.

But to those families who lost so many members, it was a bitter time in which health standards had not yet met the needs of the society that had been built around them.

ne of Argentina’s top agegroup swimmers is now calling Ashburton home.

Sixteen-year-old Sol Gonzalez moved to New Zealand with her mother and her mother’s partner in August.

Initially settling in Hamilton, the family then moved further south to Methven before deciding to call Ashburton home late last year.

Sol, whose name translates to Sun in English, searched for local swimming clubs and stumbled across the Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim Team on the internet.

From there everything fell into place and within no time she was back in the pool.

With three Argentinian national swimming titles under her belt and a gold in an international age-group 200m breaststroke event, Sol is no stranger to disciplined swimming.

It all began when she was eight, “old” by Argentinian terms where

Argentinian swimming superstar Sol Gonzalez now calls Ashburton home. This week she sat down with the Guardian’s Caitlin Porter to talk about her swimming achievements, goals and living life in a small town. the majority of professional swimmers are in the pool at the age of three.

A best friend of Sol’s was a swimmer whose forte was breaststroke so she thought why not just give it a go.

That she did, and while she wasn’t a natural – and was told so repeatedly – she worked hard to become one of the best swimmers in her age group in Argentina.

Sol takes swimming seriously, training for hours a day.

Back home she would do a voluntary hour in the pool before school, attend school from 7.30am until early afternoon, then jump back in the pool for another three hours.

Living an hour away from the swimming facilities and combin-

ing regular gym work into her regime made swimming a timeconsuming hobby.

But she loves it and has no plans to slack off.

Originally from Rosario, a major port city in Argentina in the Santa Fe province with a population of over one million, Sol is quickly settling into small-town life, but said New Zealand differed drastically from her homeland – from the people, to the culture and even the swimming – but she is enjoying the change.

“It’s really nice, the people are nice and I love it.”

Having gone four months without swimming while living in Hamilton, Sol is back at it in a big way.

She joined up with the Jennian

Homes Ashburton Swim Team’s swim camp, held in Methven last week.

It was an intensive six-day camp, designed to prepare swimmers for the upcoming regional and national events, culminating with the national age-group championships in Wellington in May. Since that finished she has continued training with the team and spends the majority of her days down at the pool.

The pools she said, were comfortable to swim in and she liked the other facilities on offer at the EA Networks Centre too.

Soon, Sol will set off on another adventure and start Year 11 at Ashburton College, something she is very excited about.

Not knowing a word of English when her family moved here in August, Sol has quickly picked up the lingo, but will take extra classes at college to help her along.

On top of that she plans to study biology – one of her favourite subjects – and nutrition.

With no plans to return to Argentina Sol said she would one day like to attend a New Zealand university and was excited at the prospect of studying towards a degree in sport and nutrition.

While she misses her friends and family, Sol said a few of her close friends stay in constant contact thanks to modern technology.

Her long-term goal is to qualify for the Olympics, but until then it is all about practise, practise, practise.

Time for a teen parent unit in Ashburton Sue Newman

E

very now and again you hear a story that makes your heart sing.

It might not be a big event in the greater scheme of things, but when it’s about a young kid overcoming adversity to make a success of her life, you feel good all over.

For many teens finding they were pregnant in Year 11 would have meant the end of their education and the end of many opportunities. Not so Nikita Ritchie.

This young woman is just 17, she’s mum to a one-year-old and she’s passed Level 2 NCEA and has solid career plans.

She’s one of the lucky ones. She had the determination and drive that meant early parenthood didn’t stall her education and she had a hugely supportive mum.

Nikita is doing the hard yards now, juggling a baby, part-time work and part-time study. She’s battled and probably continues to battle snide remarks and comments around being a young mum.

Nikita is lucky. How many other young girls find themselves pregnant and their only option is leaving school without completing their education.

Unlike many towns and cities, Ashburton does not have a teen parent unit. Our young mumsto-be simply have to get by the best they can.

There are a number of teen parent units attached to schools around New Zealand. None of those are in the Ashburton District and that’s a shame. We have one very large and one smaller secondary school in the district, with well over 1500 students between them.

Approximately half of those will be girls, any one of whom could potentially become a teenage mum who is forced to cut her education short.

The school within a school model provides care for babies by qualified early childhood education teachers and allows parents to attend school fulltime, popping in to spend time with their babies as needed.

In almost every way it is run as part of the mainstream school.

Yes, there’s the issue of funding, but perhaps the establishment of a teen parent unit in Ashburton is worth the community and the school joining forces and finding a way to ensure new mums become well educated mums.

YOUR VIEW Disgusting dumpers As I sit down to a cuppa at breaky my hackles rise as I read the front page of our paper – Endangered bird beach massacre. How awful Then on turning the page a photo of people’s rubbish (mostly stinky things) dumped on the Salvation Army’s doorstep gets to me.

This must about be as low as it gets. This is an organisation that works tirelessly for the good of our community.

They run a fantastic shop, provide food parcels in times of need, help young people to gain skills and so much more.

Come on you rubbish dumpers, show some respect to these people.

We have plenty of ways to dispose of rubbish in our town and this is not one of them.

Twitching season a farmer’s wife’s worst nightmare I

t’s called the twitching season – a term every arable farmer’s wife understands at this time of year.

Beginning as soon as the Christmas/New Year festivities have been put to bed, the Farmer becomes restless, a little tetchy, and constantly on edge as he awaits his first sojourn in the big red header (I sometimes think he has more fondness for this mechanical beast than his wife!)

At about three weeks from harvest commencing the signs begin to appear. The first symptom of twitching is the mysterious trips to my cottage garden patch he takes on arriving home in the evening.

On further perusal I have discovered scratching in the dirt surrounding my flowers and realised, by the marked sack he left behind, that he is conducting fodderbeet experiments among my flower beds.

Last month I found a wheat plant he had uprooted from

the paddock and dumped in another flower patch for some experiment he was conducting.

I have tried not to think on how much wheat I’ll be growing in my flower bed next year.

You see restlessness turns the cogs in the Farmer’s head and experiments abound.

When he’s not doing that he’s pacing, baiting his daughters (and forgetting that one is at a sensitive age so jokes about chubbiness is not appreciated), and then he begins to test for moisture in the barley.

The testing goes on for weeks – starting at 17 per cent moisture (it has to be 13) he keeps testing aimlessly every other day and

takes small cuts to ascertain if his crop is yielding to world-record standards.

At night his sleep is fitful. One season when we were younger he nearly knocked me sideways as he suddenly perched himself upright in the bed in the wee small hours and began to drive the header in his sleep.

I know, however, that harvest is approaching fast when on a windy night the Farmer suddenly lets out a few expletives, jumps out of bed in pitch darkness and disappears.

The next sound I hear (and I’ve learnt not be alarmed now) is an axe hacking at a maple tree his mother planted carefully outside our bedroom window.

When it gets to a certain height it rustles against the wall in the wind and every year, just before harvest, the irritated Farmer deals to it!

And finally the great day arrives. The beginning of harvest where a collective sigh of relief is heard throughout our household.

The Farmer is happy, jubilant even, particularly if the yield of grain is good.

He has endless energy and sleeps little. I become a widow for a few months and try not to notice how ecstatic he is at working all hours away from his family.

It’s an auger full of tranquility until the header breaks down with parts days away or rain falls and the Farmer is stuck inside looking out the window.

“Why do you do it to yourself?”

I’ve asked him more than once.

To which he replied: “That’s easy love. Without flour you couldn’t make me cakes.

“So how about you hurry inside and whip me up a sultana cake and bring it down the paddock to the header once you’re done.”

Attack perps ‘amateurs’

BY KARLIS SALNA The deadly terrorist attack in the centre of Jakarta confirms the growing threat Islamic State poses in Indonesia, but the outcome could have been much worse.

Indonesia specialist Greg Fealy, from the Australian National University, says that if the perpetrators had been more efficient terrorists, many more people might have been killed.

IS and the war in Iraq and Syria have been a source of inspiration for violent jihadists in Indonesia, but Thursday’s attack was the first larger-scale effort claimed by the group in the world’s most populous Muslim nation.

At least seven people were killed and dozens injured when the militants attacked a police post near a shopping mall in an affluent area of the capital, and set off multiple blasts including a suicide bomb near a Starbucks cafe.

IS has claimed responsibility, saying the attack was carried out by a detachment of its forces in Indonesia who “targeted a gathering of crusader coalition citizens”.

The outcome could have been much worse, Associate Professor Fealy told AAP. “It was very crude.

“And the perpetrators looked like amateurs.”

Indonesia but Thursday’s assault is believed to have been organised from Syria by an Indonesian national identified by police as Bahrun Naim, the leader of Katibah Nusantara, a Southeast Asian group attached to IS. “It confirms the threat that IS poses to Indonesia,” Associate Professor Fealy said.

Multiple targets were in Thursday’s attack, he said.

“I think the jihadists are always very keen to kill police whenever they can and the fact that they blew up that police post was an indication of that.

“But they also clearly would like to target Westerners and to target elite Indonesians, and attacking the spot that they did yesterday served all of those purposes for them.”

Meanwhile police have told an Indonesian TV channel that they have arrested three men on suspicion of links to the attack in Jakarta.

Depok area police chief Col. Dwiyono told MetroTV that the men were arrested at dawn at their homes in Depok on the outskirts of Jakarta.

Dwiyono, who goes by one name, says the men are suspected militants and are being questioned over possible links to the attack Thursday that killed seven.

Powerball bubble bursts Workers at a New Jersey restaurant thought they had won the $949m Powerball jackpot, only to later realise they were looking at the wrong day’s numbers. The staff at the restaurant collectively pooled $210 on tickets hoping they could take the prize. And they thought they did - for about 20 minutes. A friend of one of the workers texted him the numbers without realising the webpage was showing Wednesday’s numbers rather than Saturday’s. The ticket had been a perfect match for the wrong day, bringing the celebrations to an abrupt halt. One dishwasher had even thrown his apron off, declaring “I’m outta here! I quit!”. Bartender Charles Poveromo’s wife suggested he double check the numbers and the party came crashing down. “It was like a balloon deflating,” he said.

‘Disprespectful’ underwear Underwear brand AussieBum has pulled its indigenous-themed Australia Day underwear from sale after the collection was criticised for being “disrespectful” to Aboriginal people. The underwear featured boomerangs, dot paintings and a stereotypical cartoon of an Aboriginal man standing on one leg. The Australian National Flag appeared but the Aboriginal flag did not. Critics of the underwear said the collection was insulting and appropriates indigenous culture. AussieBum CEO Sean Ashby said that his company would seek indigenous community consultation for future indigenous-themed collections. - AAP

Ski resort tour bus crash kills 14 Rescue officials say an overnight tour bus on its way to a ski resort in central Japan slid down the mountainside, killing at least 14 passengers and injuring 27 others.

Fire and disaster management officials say the bus veered off to the opposite lane on a mountain road near a famous resort town of Karuizawa, in Nagano prefecture, ramming through a guardrail and sliding down the mountainside.

The bus was carrying 41 people, including two drivers who were taking turns, when it crashed in the early hours of yesterday.

Japanese media say the bus fell three metres down the mountainside and landed on its side, with its front window bashed in.

There was no snow or ice on the road surface.

Cleo still alive and well The future of Cleo remains uncertain despite a spokesman for publisher Bauer Media saying a report the magazine is set to close “is complete speculation”. News Corp reports claimed that staff would be told of the closure of the 42-year-old magazine today. He said the magazine’s website was closed due to the Cleo brand being less recognisable overseas compared to mastheads like Cosmopolitan.

Cannabis in the carrots Customs officer in Texas have intercepted 1130kg of cannabis concealed within a commercial shipment of carrots. The drugs were hidden in “carrot-like” packages and were discovered at Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge cargo facility - one of the most important ports of entry for the US-Mexico border.

US Customs and Border Protection released photographs of the orange plastic packages containing the drugs. “Once again, drug smuggling organisations have demonstrated their creativity in attempting to smuggle large quantities of narcotics across the border,” said director Efrain Solis Jr. “Our officers are always vigilant towards any type of illicit activities.”

he start of the new year is when businesses re-evaluate, make new promises and share visions for the year ahead.

It is the ideal time to reflect and figure out where you’ve been, take a realistic look at last year and see what goals you did and didn’t achieve.

Understanding your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats from the previous year will help avoid repeat mistakes and make sure you make the most of opportunities in the year ahead.

Reviewing your business plan will help you make good decisions about the direction of your business. The business environment can shift a lot in 12 months so it is not wise to simply roll out last year’s plan.

Having clarity for your objectives and ensuring staff understand the areas you want to develop will more likely result in success.

You should focus on parts of your business that don’t get a lot of attention during the day-today running of your business.

Smart leaders realise the importance of being flexible and adjusting your plan as market conditions change.

Take an overall look at your industry, customer behaviour, competitors and latest technology.

Ultimately, you want to create a roadmap that outlines the route a business intends to take to be sustainable and grow. It will help assist businesses make the most of resources by supporting them to stay on track to reach their goals.

Starting the year with well planned strategic activities and clearly defined activities before the pace of business picks up will help put you on a pathway towards a successful 2016.

The New Zealand dollar fell to its lowest level in more than three months even as some optimism returned to financial markets, as investors remained wary about the outlook.

The kiwi touched 64.18 US cents and was trading at 64.74 cents at 8am in Wellington, from 64.84 cents at 5pm on Thursday.

New Zealand food prices fell for a fifth month in December, as the cheapest chicken since 2008 and lower prices for other meat and fish led the index lower, and prompted at least one local bank to revise down its forecast for next week’s inflation data.

The food price index dropped 0.8 per cent in December, extending its decline from a 0.2 per cent fall in November, according to Statistics New Zealand. Prices fell 1.3 per cent on an annual basis, the biggest yearly drop since July 2012.

In brief ‘No women in F1’ F1 promoter Bernie Ecclestone may be in charge of a glamour sport but he’s stuck in the dark ages when it comes to promoting equality of the sexes. Ecclestone has claimed a female driver “would not be taken seriously” in the sport. Italian Lella Lombardi is the last woman to start a Formula One race, the 1976 Austrian Grand Prix, and the chances of a female breakthrough look slim judging by Ecclestone’s attitude.

Ecclestone told Canada’s TSN “If there was somebody that was capable they wouldn’t be taken seriously anyway, so they would never have a car that is capable of competing.”

Price extends Dakar lead Toby Price is just two stages away from a historic Dakar Rally victory after extending his lead to more than 35 minutes in the overall motorcycle standings. The Australian rider finished second on stage 11, just 18 seconds behind Frenchman Antoine Meo. Big hopes on home turf Local riders will be hoping the hometown advantage will give them the edge as the ESNZ Ashburton Area Grand Prix Show jumping & Showhunter Show gets under way at the Ashburton Showgrounds today.

Following wins at the Canterbury Show Jumping Christmas Cracker and South Island Championships last month, Ashburton’s Candace Kingsbury will be gunning for another strong performance in the amateur rider series with her 13-year-old mare Miss Serendipity II. The pair have been very consistent so far this season and currently sit in second place in the national amateur rider series, just four points in arrears of current leader Glen Hicks, but

she’s not getting too excited yet.

“There are still plenty of shows to come and anything can happen, and there are a lot of competitors nationally in the series,” Kingsbury said.

“We just take each show as it comes and try to enjoy it. If it goes well and we get placed, it’s a bonus.”

Up against a 19-strong field, Kingsbury isn’t expecting too much from Miss Serendipity II this weekend.

“We are usually a bit rusty after the Christmas break as we haven’t had a show for a few weeks,” she said.

The show has three full rings of jumping and a show hunter ring in operation over both days catering to riders of all levels, jumping from 70cm right through to Grand Prix.

Jumping action starts at 8.30am and entry to the grounds is free.

An eagle on the last hole has catapulted Danny Lee into the top 10 after his first round of this week’s PGA Tour event in Hawaii. A Mid Canterbury mixed agegroup team played host to a Trinidad and Tobago under-17 Invitational side at the Ashburton Oval yesterday.

The tourists arrived in New Zealand on January 4, play-

ing twice in Auckland and two matches in Wellington before travelling to the South Island.

Trinidad and Tobago under-17 coach Andre Lawrence said his young players have been making the most of the tour of New Zealand, and have adapted well to their new surroundings.

“It’s been an absolutely incredible tour for the boys.

“The conditions here are totally different than we’re accustomed to, which is great for them and their development,” he said.

“The pitches do a lot more, it swings a lot more, and the disci-

pline of the teams we’ve played against has been excellent.”

Lawrence’s side will next be in action in Queenstown, followed by their last match of the tour in Auckland before heading home on January 24.

Yesterday’s match was called off when the rain arrived.

Plans for pink ball matches put on hold Plans for a round of Plunket Shield matches with pink balls under lights next month have been scrapped.

And that in turn is likely to put back the prospect of a day-night test until the 2017-18 season.

New Zealand Cricket had proposed using a round of first-class matches starting on February 20 at Eden Park, Napier’s McLean Park and Seddon Park in Hamilton to test the merits of using a pink ball in New Zealand conditions.

Those three venues, plus Wellington’s Westpac Stadium, are the only possible locations as they have lights.

However, problems with

McLean Park’s lighting strength has meant the idea is on the shelf, but with the intention of looking again at the proposal in the next domestic first-class season.

While Seddon Park was fine and it was expected Eden Park would also work, once a handful of points had been worked through, the strength of the lighting at McLean Park presented an issue.

There had been the idea of New Zealand’s first day-night test at home being staged at one of those venues next season, most likely against South Africa at Eden Park.

However, without a full trial run, it is unlikely to go ahead.

NZC general manager of cricket Lindsay Crocker pointed out the distinction between playing white ball limited-overs cricket under lights and using a pink ball. ‘’The white ball only has to last 25 overs (using one ball at each end in a 50-over match) whereas a pink ball has to last 80 overs,” Crocker said.

He added that there was a strong collective willingness for the pink ball experiment, but having canvassed a range of options, it was felt more work was needed to get the plan over the line.

NZC looked at switching the McLean Park game between Central Districts and Wellington,

to neutral Seddon Park on a different date, or Westpac Stadium, but scheduling problems eventually scuppered those ideas.

Staging it as a day game would also mean an uneven playing field for the premier domestic competition.

NZC are due to have talks with Cricket South Africa shortly and it may be CSA are willing to press on, even without the pink ball having been trialled.

More likely, however, the target will be a test against England, who are the major incoming tour in the 2017-18 summer.

There have been no talks with England about the idea, but that will happen this year.

Waireka Croquet Club’s inaugural twilight golf croquet evening proved a resounding success on Thursday with a turnout of more than 40.

The club will be opening its doors to novice and experienced players alike for twilight match-

es on Thursday evenings for the next three months.

Club secretary Audrey Leath was pleased with the number of participants, and hopes the evening’s popularity continues to grow.

“We were overwhelmed.

“We had 42 people which was amazing, and about 20 of them

hadn’t played the game before,” she said.

Mrs Leath said there was a wide range of ages and abilities, with some enjoying the evening even more than they had anticipated.

“One woman said she was just coming for that night, but by the end she was so hooked on it that

she said she is coming back next week with her husband,” she said.

“We had three teenagers, about the age of 15, and we also had plenty of men as well as women.”

Twilight croquet will run at 6pm on Thursdays until March 3.

Corruption ‘embedded in the organisation’ Athletics New Zealand have supported Sebastian Coe over the latest report on the anti-doping issues and the Russian Athletics Federation, saying he is the best person to lead the IAAF. A World Anti-Doping Agency report released yesterday said track and field’s governing body, the IAAF, was corrupted from the inside by a “powerful rogue group” led by its president, and they conspired to extort athletes and allow doping Russians to continue competing.

Other IAAF leaders were at fault, too, the WADA panel’s damning report said.

The report also questioned whether alleged corruption under Diack went beyond extorting doped athletes and infected other areas of IAAF business.

It made further uncomfortable reading for Sebastian Coe, the British middle-distance running great who took over from Diack in August.

Coe was in the audience as former WADA president Dick Pound, who wrote the report, sifted through the grim findings and asserted that the IAAF remains an organisation in denial.

“The corruption was embedded in the organisation.

“It cannot be ignored or dismissed as attributable to the odd

Lord Sebastian Coe. renegade acting on its own,” the report said.

Coe is not accused of corrupt wrongdoing.

But, as an IAAF vice president under Diack, he was part of its Council, its oversight body, that took a hammering from the investigators’ report.

Athletics New Zealand said they were disappointed at the

allegations of corruption at the highest level in the IAAF around anti-doping issues and the Russian Athletics Federation due to the significant lapse in governance that allowed this to happen.

“It is alarming [if the alleged corruption is proven] that a small group of individuals in powerful positions within the IAAF were abetting and covering up doping for their own financial gain,” Athletics NZ chief executive Linda Hamersley said.

“Athletics NZ first supported Lord Coe during his presidential campaign, and we still believe he is the best person to lead the IAAF out of this situation to regain the reputation, credibility and integrity the sport needs and we continue to support him.”

The 34 banned AFL players have met with their players association as they consider their next steps.

They are looking at the possibility of an appeal against their anti-doping suspensions and also legal action against Essendon, where they all played in 2012. Under the terms of the ban, the 12 current Essendon players and their five former teammates now at other clubs cannot play this season.

Transfer bans Real Madrid and neighbours Atletico Madrid have been banned by FIFA from registering players for two transfer windows and breaching rules on signing non-Spanish under-18 players, including coach Zinedine Zidane’s four sons at Real.

No Federer/Djokovic final

BY DARREN WALTON A first-time Australian Open final featuring Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer will continue to elude fans after the grand slam titans were thrust into the same side of the draw yesterday.

Djokovic and Federer have contested the final at the past two majors, with the Serb downing the Swiss in four sets at both Wimbledon and the US Open to lock up their career series at 22 wins apiece.

But despite their decade-long rivalry, they have never squared off in an Australian Open decider, Djokovic downing Federer in the 2008 and 2011 semifinals.

The pair are projected to again clash in the semi-finals this year, but Djokovic’s immediate focus will be on young Korean sensation Hyeon Chung in what shapes as a testing start to his quest for a record-equalling sixth crown.

The 19-year-old Chung was voted the ATP’s most improved player last season after surging from outside the world’s top 170 to 51st.

Djokovic, though, will be a raging favourite to continue on his merry way after landing 12 titles in the past 12 months and opening 2016 with a

straight-sets rout of Rafael Nadal in the Doha final.

The world No.7 is projected to meet Japanese seventh seed Kei Nishikori in the quarter-finals.

Federer, with four Australian Open titles among his 17 majors, opens against Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili and could face dangerous Ukraine Alexandr Dolgopolov in the second round and 27th seed Grigor Dimitrov in the third.

Czech sixth seed Tomas Berdych is the Swiss champion’s projected lasteight foe, while young Australian ace Nick Kyrgios also looms in their quarter.

Second seed Andy Murray, a threetime runner-up to Djokovic and once to Federer, plays rising German Alexander Zverev in his opener and could run into Australian No.1 Bernard Tomic, the 16th seed, in the fourth round.

Swiss fourth seed Stan Wawrinka and Spanish fifth seed Rafael Nadal, who clashed in the 2014 title match, are scheduled to meet in the quarter-finals.

First, though, Nadal must see off countryman Fernando Verdasco in an intriguing sequel of their epic five-set semi-final in 2009.

We are looking for 1 x full-time (40 hours) and 2 x part-time (30 hours) team members to work in the day-to-day processing and warehouse facility. This is a varied role with duties including machine operation, raw material handling, cleaning, production and packaging, order processing and goods in/out.

You will need to be a hard worker with a positive can-do attitude and not afraid to get your hands dirty. You must be reliable, trustworthy and honest, with a high standard of work and strong attention to detail. You will be able to follow instructions, policies and procedures, and work to daily production requirements, either individually or as part of a team.
