A cyclist is in critical condition after being knocked off his bike at Netherby about 10.45am yesterday.

Art collection on the move

The Ashburton Trust’s art collection is on the move.

With four of its businesses on or about to go on the market, trust chief executive Robert Reid is leading the charge to ensure its collection of more than 100 paintings are not part of the deal.

Initially most of those will be moved into the Ashburton Art Gallery’s store where they will be assessed and catalogued.

Later this year the trust will decide which it will keep and which

will be sold. “This is something we’ve talked about for a long time.

“We haven’t made a decision whether we’ll sell or what we’ll sell, but we know we don’t want them to go with the businesses,” he said.

The trust has three of its businesses – Speight’s Alehouse, The Somerset Grocer and the Tinwald Motels and Tavern complex on the market and it will put the Hotel Ashburton up for sale in about two months.

It will retain ownership of the

buildings housing those businesses.

Most of the art work is on display at the Hotel Ashburton and some paintings that have little value – sentimental or financial, may go with the business, Mr Reid said.

“We can’t just leave the walls bare.”

Ashburton Art Gallery curator Shirin Khosraviani had been an invaluable source of advice as the trust started the storage process, Mr Reid said.

Over the years the trust had

had an art acquisition policy that saw it buying works from local exhibitions and for some time it had had far more paintings than hanging space.

“We’ve already got paintings in storage and that’s not ideal. If we sell these off it’s not about the money, it’s doing the right thing with a public asset.”

While it had yet to decide the future of its art collection, the trust was keen to hear from people who may have a sentimental or family link to any of the paintings it owned.

An Ashburton woman who came across the accident told the Guardian that the cyclist, who was wearing a helmet and in full cycle gear, was unresponsive after the crash.

She understood the cyclist had hit the car’s bonnet and windscreen, smashing it, before being thrown on to the road. The driver was shaken and upset.

Bridge Street and Princes Street were closed around the scene of the crash yesterday for about three-and-a-half hours as the police serious crash unit and police photographer attended.

On February 2, two teenagers on a training ride fell out into the road after hitting an opening car door at the Allenton Shopping Centre, and were lucky not to be run over by a following vehicle.

Following the accident, Ashburton police reminded motorists to share the road with cyclists.

The female driver who opened the car door was not charged as the cyclists were not injured.

Constable Ben Rutherford said at the time that the reminder for motorists to share the road was a timely one considering it was Bike Wise Month.

Volunteers ‘gutted’ by sprinkler theft

Ashburton College’s cricket teams have been left dry after their sprinkler system was stolen at the weekend.

The soaker hose system was put on the school’s 1st XI pitch at the Ashburton Domain on Saturday evening and by Sunday morning it had gone.

Pitch volunteer Mick Buchanan said he was absolutely gutted that someone would steal the system.

“It’s just frustrating.”

The sprinkler, which costs nearly $500, will have to be replaced with money reserved for the cricket teams to use for other things.

While the college teams had never had their sprinkler stolen before, neighbouring Allenton Cricket Club has had theirs stolen and dumped in trees at the domain a number of times.

People had probably walked over the pitch following a night out in town and decided it would be fun to take the sprinkler, Mr Buchanan said.

The system could be lying nearby and he hoped it would be returned so they did not have to buy a new one.

“I hope that someone finds it.”

It looks like a 25m long and 5cm thick black hose, he said.

The college’s three pitches, at the domain, are maintained by five volunteers who spend hours every week making sure the grounds are up to scratch.

Truckie road rage An angry truckie snatched the car keys from a tourist driver and threw them over a fence in Queenstown at the weekend.

Sergeant Keith Newell, of Queenstown police, said the truck driver told police he forced the female driver of a rental vehicle to stop after she twice “cut him off” at the Frankton and Glenda Drive roundabouts at about 7pm. Sergeant Newell said motorists concerned about unsafe driving should contact police on *555 instead of taking action themselves.

$250 for assault A man who spat at Paul Henry then later defaced MediaWorks headquarters with slurs about the presenter will have to pay him $250, despite his protestations.

The incident of wilful damage came just hours after 35-year-old Diego Chavez was found guilty of assaulting the controversial personality on December 2. The court heard how Chavez had no previous convictions and Judge Sharp sentenced him to 200 hours community work. – NZME

Hundreds of new claims Nearly 500 insurance claims have been made to the Earthquake Commission since Sunday’s violent earthquake in Canterbury.

The magnitude 5.7 jolt has been followed by 496 claims to cover damage caused by the quake.

Earthquake Commission chief executive Ian Simpson said they

will be using experiences from earlier earthquakes in the region to ensure they are handled effectively.

“Planning is under way, drawing on the lessons of the past five years, so that we can stage the most efficient response to this latest earthquake.”

He said it was too early to

speculate on the final number of claims or the total cost of the damage.

Claims can be filed until May 16.

The Earthquake Commission covers earthquake damage to homes, contents and residential land.

People must have a home or

contents fire insurance policy with an insurance company on their home at the time of the earthquakes to make a claim.

People can lodge claims with The Earthquake Commission online at eqc.govt.nz/claims, via email on info@eqc.govt.nz, or by calling 0800 DAMAGE (326 243).

‘It’s a bit of a kick in the guts’ After five years of enduring a bumpy, pot-holed, riverbed road Gary Bell drove home on Friday night, got out of his ute, and lay down on the flat, smooth black asphalt and cheered.

But less than 48 hours later, the brand-new road outside his Christchurch house - already snapped in half by the killer February 2011 quake - was bubbling

in sandy grey silt yet again.

“It’s a bit of a kick in the guts to tell you the truth, but that’s life we’ll carry on and be right,” said Mr Bell.

The close-knit residents of Linkwater Way in the suburb of Parklands soon pitched in with shovels and spades to clear the worst of the liquefaction.

Reunited with owner A dog spooked during Sunday’s earthquake has been reunited with her owners after jumping nearly 4m from a second-storey window and bolting down the street.

Morgan Thomas and his partner returned to their house in Redcliffs on Sunday evening after the 5.7 magnitude quake to find Rosie, the staffie, was not at home where they had left her.

“We came home at about 8.30 and were like ‘where’s our dog’,” Mr Thomas said. He said all the windows and doors had been closed and locked except one on the second storey, which they leave open every day to get a good airflow going for their 4-year-old dog. “[She jumped] from the sec-

ond storey. It’s 3.8m high and she jumped out. It’s the only way she could have got out of the house.”

Mr Thomas, who owns a plumbing company in Christchurch, said they searched for Rosie for about an hour, searching the places they usually took her for walks, before their flatmate called to tell them she’d been found.

“We were thinking the worst when we couldn’t find her. We were relieved to find out she was all right.”

A Christchurch Council Facebook post was responsible for reuniting the family.

Large sinkhole opened A large sinkhole has opened up on a busy Christchurch street after Sunday’s earthquake, with road workers fearing that there could be more hidden dangers below the unstable surface.

The 3m long, 1m deep gouge emerged on Bower Ave near Crofts Lane in Parklands during liquefaction after the 5.7 magnitude jolt.

It appeared outside the home of Tosh Prodanov.

He said sewage was also bubbling up from the ground, mixed in with the silty grey mud.

“They were just fixing up the road and this happens. Gutted,” said the 47-year-old.

Site traffic management supervisor Phillip Jonker said the roads around the Parklands area, especially Bower Ave were treacherous.

He cited holes, liquefaction, slippery driving surfaces and “who knows what other weak spots”.

“You can’t tell what is going on under the road surface – there could be holes, you just can’t see them,” he said.

“It’s very risky especially for heavy vehicles.”

The road is blocked in some areas and down to one lane in other places.

Contractors using shovels and heavy machinery were clearing liquefaction from driveways and roads yesterday.

One group of workers found a large hole beneath a mound of liquefaction.

Locals say liquefaction spouted 1m into the air.

Mr Jonker asked residents to drive safely.

‘Shake the Net’ A campaigner is hoping to get at least a million Kiwis to “Shake the ‘Net” with an online tribute in remembrance of the fifth anniversary of the Christchurch earthquake.

Becky Siame, the founder of social media tool Get Behind It, wants New Zealanders to post a message on their social media walls at 12.51pm on February 22 – the exact time the earthquake hit.

The message is: “Remembering the fallen and their families at 12:51pm, 22 Feb ‘11. Kia Kaha Christchurch! We will not forget!”

A “virtual flash mob” would hopefully result, Ms Siame said.

“When we say something together, our voices are louder and the synergy of our actions more powerful,” she said.

“If all New Zealand spoke on social media at the same time, what would be the impact on the rest of the world?”

Ms Siam believed it would be a unique way for Kiwis to stand together.

Trapeze artist reaches new heights

Wellington-based trapeze artist Anna Cochrane broke a world record above Ashburton on Sunday morning despite a rib injury.

Ms Cochrane was successful in her bid to perform the world’s highest static trapeze act while suspended from a hot air balloon to raise money for Big Brothers and Big Sisters (a mentor programme for vulnerable children).

The ambulance officer and pilates instructor performed a routine of more than 5 minutes at an altitude of between 10,400ft and 11,400ft surpassing the previous record of 2171ft.

“I am really proud of how all the team of experts came together, it’s still unbelievable that it actually happened,” she said.

“A little part of me thought that this was all too big and it couldn’t be happening but the whole thing went so smoothly.”

However, a few minutes into the routine she dislocated her rib but did not stop in order to make the record a success.

She had hoped to top off the experience by sky diving from the hot air balloon afterwards but her injury prevented her from doing this.

Wellington trapeze artist Anna Cochrane broke a world record over Ashburton on Sunday.

The record was done with the help of a number of organisations including Ashburton-based Skydiving Kiwis.

who watched the event, said it was amazing to see the aerial performer complete the challenge.

“It was awesome to watch. She is so brave.”

Join the fun at Sketch Shop

Calling all adults who like to act, Big Little Theatre Company will tonight launch a new theatre group. Well known in the town for its drama classes for children, the theatre company is beginning a new item on its calendar this year, called Sketch Shop.

Director Jackie Heffernan said Sketch Shop was in effect a new theatre company especially for adults within Big Little, which could ultimately stage an annual production.

She said she had considered Ashburton could do with its own repertory company, similar to Methven’s Methven Theatre Company. “And I think there’s interest here, and we have such an awesome performance space in the Ashburton Trust Event Centre foyer,” Mrs Heffernan said.

This term, all Big Little classes were moving back to the event centre after a one-year “sojourn” at Aeroview Theatre.

“I think it’s important that we grow an audience for the event centre,” Mrs Heffernan said.

Big Little had its foundations linked with the event centre, having moved in there and officially becoming a theatre company when the facility opened.

However, it moved out prior to its classes starting last year, with Mrs Heffernan voicing disappointment at the time on the venue’s commercial focus on hiring out its rooms.

“It was an accommodation issue, but we have been able to reconfigure our classes so we can fit around what happens there,” Mrs Heffernan said.

Classes would be conducted on the auditorium stage, and Sketch Shop could lead into fun Friday night comedy performances in the foyer, and perhaps annual productions at a later stage.

“This is a chance for adults to get together and have some fun rehearsing and performing some comic skits and sketches, just for starters,” she said.

Mrs Heffernan began drama classes for youngsters in Ashburton about nine years ago, and today about 100 children and teenagers attend.

Spanish flair coming to Ashburton

Ashburtonians will get a taste of Spanish flair during lessons taught by Argentinian Gisela Cuadrado from tomorrow.

Basic Spanish lessons will be offered to preschoolers, schoolaged children and adults every Wednesday.

Mrs Cuadrado, who now lives in Mid Canterbury, said the lessons will start with basics, such as the alphabet and move onto more challenging grammar.

She will use songs, activities, audio and games to help people learn. “Listening is the best and fastest way to learn.”

Learning another language is beneficial to everyone no matter their age as it opens people’s minds and enriches their lives, she said.

“It’s quite hard to do it, but it is a great challenge.

“It’s something that I recommend for everyone.”

Mrs Cuadrado said she would not be where she is today if she had not learnt English.

Fire Brigade call-out Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade members attended a vegetation fire in a small garden near Ashburton Borough School about 2.30am yesterday. Firefighters were at the scene for about 15 minutes.

Ambulance call-out St John ambulanced a mountain biker to Ashburton Hospital with moderate injuries on Sunday.

The male patient aged in his 20s had fallen off his bike at the information booth on the Mt Hutt Ski Area access road about 1pm.

Critically injured A cyclist has been critically injured in a crash in Dunedin, police say.

The cyclist, a 35-year-old man, collided with a car at about 8.30pm on Sunday on Main Rd, in the suburb of Fairfield. The road was closed for several hours and police have spoken to the car’s driver.

Private prison operator Serco says a report into organised fighting at Mt Eden Corrections Facility includes anonymous, unverified allegations and it wants it to be rewritten. The company’s lawyer, Hayden Wilson, told the High Court at Wellington yesterday, that the investigation had departed from the terms of reference, contained errors of law, and had omitted relevant factors. The company said: “Serco claims that by relying on anonymous claims and allegations, which have not been verified or corroborated, the report is a breach of natural justice.”

Former Geraldine boy Fire at Christchurch power responsible for death station, reports of explosion The man responsible for the death of Dunedin teenager Nicholas Munro can be named for the first time.

Former Geraldine boy Sam Scott threw the punch that knocked 18-year-old Nicholas to the ground on March 6, 2005.

Mr Scott was not charged in relation to the death and was granted interim name suppression until yesterday morning, when Coroner David Crerar released his findings on the death.

“It is now clear that Sam Scott ought not to have responded to the insults and assaults by

Nicholas Munro in the manner in which he did,’’ Coroner Crerar said.

“His reaction was out of proportion to the threat posed to him by Nicholas Munro who was a lot smaller than Sam Scott and was very drunk.

“The punch which Sam Scott administered was unfortunate in that it had consequences which could not have been anticipated.’’

Nicholas died five days after the punch at Dunedin Hospital from cardiac failure caused by his severe head injuries. - NZME

Witnesses described hearing three huge explosions and seeing towering fireballs at a Christchurch power sub-station yesterday.

Hei Hei resident Jenee Pullen, 34, was watching a movie with one-year-old son TJ Roberts, when the explosions happened across the road at the station.

“We just heard bang bang bang,” she said.

“I thought a passing truck had dropped something. But when I had a look outside I saw smoke and fireballs. It was a pretty big

fire. You could feel the heat from the flames.”

Unsure what to do, she then heard someone outside yell, “It’s gonna blow!”

She rushed outside to ask police and Transpower officials if she should evacuate. They reassured her that the transformer was protected by blast walls and that the blaze was contained.

A fire service spokesman confirmed the blaze at Transpower’s Islington Substation on the city’s Roberts Road was an oil fire.

The fire was extinguished at

3pm yesterday. Shift manager Brett Dunn said the fire had produced a lot of smoke, but was in a “secure location” meaning it was unlikely to spread.

Fire crews were brought in from throughout the city to help battle the blaze using foam. There were seven fire crews at the scene.

Mr Dunn said there have been no reports of injuries.

The fire was called in by multiple members of the public about 1.30pm, and there had been reports of an explosion, Mr Dunn said.

Kurdish positions shelled Turkey shelled positions held by a US-backed Kurdish militia in northern Syria for a second day, drawing condemnation from the Syrian government, whose forces are advancing against insurgents in the same area under the cover of Russian airstrikes.

Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency said Turkish artillery units fired at Kurdish fighters in the Syrian town of Azaz in Aleppo province, saying it was in response to incoming Kurdish fire.

Turkish troops have shelled areas under the control of Syria’s main Kurdish faction, the People’s Protection Units, known as YPG, in the past. The group has been most effective in the fight against the Islamic State group in Syria, but Ankara appears increasingly uneasy over the group’s recent gains in the country’s north.

“Turkey has responded in this manner in the past,” said Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister Yalcin Akdogan. “What is different is not that Turkey has responded in such a way but the fact that there are different movements in the region.

The YPG crossing west of the Euphrates is Turkey’s red line.”

The YPG is the main fighting force of Syrian Kurds and a key ally of the US-led coalition battling the Islamic State group. Turkey, which is also in the alliance, considers it an affiliate of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, which has waged a decades-long insurgency against Ankara.

Just friends?

They’re seen jumping in the surf, frolicking in the sand and lying next to each other on towels. Woman’s Day has published candid snaps of the two enjoying a day at Auckland’s popular Piha Beach, smiling, laughing and jumping in waves together. The magazine reports they were “play-fighting” in the surf before “settling in for some serious sun worship” and a picnic lunch. It comes a week after the magazine snapped Lorde and Warren on a “date”, reporting they enjoyed a “cosy” breakfast in Herne Bay near where Lorde owns a $2.8 million home.

A coalition of Kurdish-led Syrian fighters known as the Syrian Democratic Forces recently seized a number of villages near Turkey’s border. Ankara appears concerned they could reach the opposition stronghold of Azaz, which is home to a major border crossing that has been controlled by militants since 2012.

Diplomats from a group of countries that have interests in Syria’s five-year civil war, including the US, Russia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Iran, agreed

to seek a temporary “cessation of hostilities” within a week.

But the fighting on the ground, which has sent tens of thousands of people fleeing toward the Turkish border where they continue to sleep in the open air, has accelerated.

A top Syrian opposition figure, former Prime Minister Riad Hijab, criticised Russia for continuing with its bombing in Syria, and also stopped short of declaring a clear commitment to implement a

planned temporary truce.

“You ask me if I accept a ceasefire or a cessation of hostilities. I ask you: Why is the onus on the opposition and whether it has preconditions for negotiations?” Hijab said.

“I would like to see a single day of a cessation of hostilities in order to give a chance for real political movement.”

He was addressing the Munich Security Conference, an annual gathering of foreign and security policy leaders.

Pope condemns ‘dealers of death’ Pope Francis condemned the drug trade’s “dealers of death” and urged Mexicans to shun the devil’s lust for money as he led a huge open-air Mass for more than 300,000 people in the violence-riddled city of Ecatepec.

“Let us get it into our heads: With the devil, there is no dialogue,” the pope said at the biggest scheduled event of his five-day visit to Mexico.

Francis brought a message of encouragement on the second full day of his trip to residents of Ecatepec, a povertystricken Mexico City suburb of some 1.6 million people where drug violence, kidnappings and gangland-style killings, particularly of women, are a fact of life.

“He’s coming to Ecatepec because we need him here,” said Ignacia Godinez, a 56-year-old homemaker.

“Kidnappings, robberies and drugs have all increased, and he is bringing comfort. His message will reach those who need it so that people know we, the good people, outnumber the bad.”

“Only the power of the word of God can defeat him,” the pope said.

In a final prayer, he urged Mexicans to make their country into a land of opportunity “where there will be no need to

emigrate in order to dream, no need to be exploited in order to work, no need to make the despair and poverty of many the opportunism of a few, a land that will not have to mourn men and women, young people and children who are destroyed at the hands of the dealers of death.”

The faithful lined the pope’s motorcade route to the huge field where the Mass took

place, tossing flower petals as he passed by and cheering with pom-poms in the yellow and white of the Vatican flag.

Vendors sold T-shirts, plates with Francis’ image on them, pins, bandanas and cardboardcutout figures of the pope.

An estimated 100,000 people have been killed and 27,000 have disappeared in gangland violence since President Enrique Pena Nieto’s predecessor launched an offensive against drug cartels shortly after taking office in late 2006.

At least 1554 women have vanished in Mexico State since 2005, according to the National Observatory on Femicide, and last year the government issued an alert over the killings of women in Ecatepec and other parts of the state.

Nevertheless, women who came to see Francis said they felt safe, thanks in part to the huge security presence. The government assigned more than 10,000 police, soldiers and members of the presidential guard to protect the motorcade and Mass.

UK group Viola Beach killed A British rock band and their manager have died after the car they were travelling in plunged into a canal in Sweden. The five men, aged between 20 and 35, were killed after their vehicle went through the barrier of a bridge which had opened to let a boat pass underneath. Viola Beach - whose members were Kris Leonard, River Reeves, Tomas Lowe and Jack Dakin - and their manager Craig Tarry died in the incident in Sodertalje, 29 kilometres from the capital Stockholm. Tributes from the world of music were paid to the group, from Warrington, Cheshire, who had played the Swedish music festival Where is the Music? on Friday.

DiCaprio wins Leading Actor The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road were the big winners at the 2016 BAFTAs. Leonardo DiCaprio won the Leading Actor award for his role as legendary frontiersman Hugh Glass in the survival movie, while Alejandro G. Inarritu won Best Director and saw his movie also triumph in the Film, Sound and Cinematography categories.

Mad Max: Fury Road also won a number of awards, including Editing, Production Design, Costume Design and Make-up and Hair. Along with Leonardo’s win for Leading Actor, the acting categories also saw Brie Larson take home the Leading Actress award for Room with Kate Winslet picking up Best Supporting Actress for Steve Jobs and Mark Rylance taking home the Best Supporting Actor gong for Bridge of Spies.

W

ith a population of just over 30,000 Mid Canterbury punches well above its weight when it comes to churning out athletes of all descriptions.

And the weekend’s iconic Coast to Coast multisport event is a prime example.

A team of Mount Hutt College teenagers took on the challenge and exceeded all expectations when they pulled off third place in the schools’ section and crossed the finishing line as the fastest mixed three person crew.

It was an impressive feat for Mark Wilson, Lily Spittal and Joseph Todhunter, especially so considering Lily was the only female in the class.

Undeterred, the feisty 16-year-old made short work of the 67 kilometre paddle down the Waimakariri River, coming out of her kayak in the fastest time in the schools’ class.

Mark’s determination is also worth noting – given the 17-year-old had recently broken his leg.

At the other end of the spectrum Tim Silva, an old campaigner in the event, dusted off his gear to take up the challenge after a decade-long hiatus.

While he opted for the Mountain Run, rather than the full course, Tim also did the district proud – bringing home the winner’s gong for the veteran run.

Other Mid Cantabrians also turned out for the gruelling challenge and delivered exceptional performances, including Kate Oliver, Peter Ashton and Harley Davies.

Meanwhile, Wellington-based trapeze artist Anna Cochrane was planning to launch herself from a hot air balloon in search of a world record in our own backyard.

And on Sunday she did it, performing the world’s highest static trapeze act at an altitude above 10,400ft, hanging above the stunning patchwork of Mid Canterbury’s harvest-ready plains for five minutes, well and truly smashing the previous record of 2171ft.

As a nation we perform exceptionally well on the international stage, both in team and individual sports – and it’s communities like ours that are the breeding grounds for this talent.

Fonterra’s governance review needs to be far reaching and not get bogged down by the size of the board.

When size doesn’t matter C

onsultation on Fonterra’s governance and representation review has begun, and credit where credit is due, I like how Fonterra have approached this.

The document outlines all the issues that farmer shareholders need to be considering, and the questions to be answered by the farmer, for shaping Fonterra’s representation and governance moving forward.

One of the concerns I have is everyone will just get focused on the board size argument. While that may well be one aspect to change depending on farmer sentiment, it is not the only one.

And, if we get too myopic on that, we could well ignore other issues in this document which I feel are equally important.

In particular, I think we need to spend just as much focus on the representation, and some even larger questions that flow from those points related to Fonterra.

For example, what representation do foreign farmers get and before we even go there, do we actually believe in these offshore milk pools?

I seriously think Fonterra man-

agement need to better articulate to farmers what is the value to their shareholders of being globally relevant.

At a time when the world is awash in milk, why are we after more volume? There will be some really sound reasons why these milk pools are the best thing since sliced bread but this needs to be better explained.

So, if we agree that milk pools are a good thing, then what sort of representation do these foreign farmers get, because let’s face it, if they don’t feel any sense of belonging, then they are less likely to be a loyal supplier, which then creates a risk of these milk pools being less efficient.

This brings forth another question that needs answering about their beliefs in such basic things (to New Zealand farmer shareholders) of free trade and

rejection of subsidies. Will they support New Zealand’s system or their own country’s?

Another key thing I believe around the representation issue is the advocacy role of the shareholders’ council.

Now I may be acting out of self interest here in raising this, but quite frankly as an industry we need to work out who does what, and how we can work together.

In these tight times farmers want to know that their precious resources aren’t being wasted through duplication.

So if shareholders’ councillors are going to spend time on advocating for farmers on some issues then are they going to advocate on everything?

If so, then it’s an easy slide for farmers to think that, if Fonterra and the shareholders’ council both advocate on the issues that are sexy, then why bother with Federated Farmers’ membership and DairyNZ’s levy?

The difficulty then, is who looks after the real nuts and bolts of farming, like rates, property rights, rural broadband, boarding school scholarships, rural roads, regional council plans, central

government plans and so forth, which all threaten the bottom line of farming .

This is the core work of Federated Farmers and we do it on the smell of a very dry oily rag, funded by our members.

Personally, I want my shareholder councillors focused on one thing only and that is ensuring my interests in Fonterra are represented strongly.

There are many aspects of Fonterra’s strategy and structure that are poorly understood, from the milk pools, to explaining GDT and translating all the financial mumbo jumbo and buzzwords into plain English.

This should be the focus, not worrying about stuff that DairyNZ and Federated Farmers already have covered.

So, I encourage all Fonterra farmers to be involved in this discussion.

I hope I have demonstrated that we need to be thinking wider than just the size of the board.

Runway extension criticised Wellington International Airport has hit back at analysis of its runway extension project by the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research, saying the critique undertaken for airlines opposing the $300 million project has overstated the number of routes proposed and used unreasonably low estimates of the value of tourists to New Zealand.

The Board of Airline Representatives released the NZIER analysis as the main element of its submission that the 350 metre extension to its existing 1945 metre runway is “highly speculative and should not proceed”.

NZIER based its conclusions on analysing seven potential routes to the Middle East, Asia and the US west coast, but airport spokesman Greg Thomas told BusinessDesk in an email that its consultants had based their findings in favour of the runway extension’s viability on far fewer routes.

Demand sees shortage of workers A record upsurge in demand for ultrafast broadband connections since Christmas is exacerbating a shortage of technicians to do the work, say fibre companies.

Speaking at last week’s release by the Telecommunications Forum of a report on the status of the industry, Chorus chief executive Mark Ratcliffe said both January and February had seen a record number of connections and his company, which is responsible for most of the UFB roll-out nationwide, has had to boost its technician capacity by 30 per cent in the past four months.

Four companies have been contracted by the Government to meet its objective of rolling out

UFB to 80 per cent of the country by 2022. Chorus received more than 13,000 new fibre connection orders in January, the highest in one month, and it’s currently completing an average 400 new connections a day.

“We need, collectively, twice as many technicians than we have working by the middle of the year, it’s that kind of magnitude,” Ratcliffe said.

The roll-out has just passed the half-way mark with 550,000 customers having fibre laid past their homes and 100,000 customers now connected, Chorus’s Ratcliffe said.

It takes about three months to train a technician, depending on

their skill level, but also represents a $100,000 investment when the training, equipment, and van are taken into consideration, he said.

Spark New Zealand chief executive Simon Moutter said fibre was an easy sell at the moment but there needed to be more education for consumers on what will happen at their home with fibre installations.

“There’s lots of work to do to make sure we get the customer experience in the place it needs to be.”

A breakdown of annual sector investment shows $686 million went into fibre fixed access in 2014.

Govt urged to stump up for island Former Maori Affairs Minister Dover Samuels is calling on the Government to buy a controversial Far North island before it is sold to another private owner.

The Overseas Investment Office released its findings this month from a five-year investigation into the 2010 sale of Motukawaiti, the second biggest island in the Cavalli group off Matauri Bay and the only one in private hands.

The investigation found some evidence the purchase may have broken the law governing the sale of “sensitive” land to overseas buyers, but not enough to be sure of a successful prosecution.

Mr Samuels, who hails from Matauri Bay, described the report as a “whitewash” and questioned why it took so long to produce – despite frequent Parliamentary questions by MPs Shane Jones and Kelvin Davis.

More importantly, he wanted to know how the sale was possible in the first place.

“How did this transfer take place when we have a watchdog in place, the Overseas Investment Office, which is supposed to scrutinise the sale of sensitive land?”

Mr Samuels said the local hapu, Ngati Kura, only found out about the sale when the new owners

turned up to ask for access across Maori land.

Motukawaiti was the only island in the group of more than 20 that was in private hands.

The others were Maori land open to the public, or in the case of Motukawanui, DoC-administered land subject to a Treaty claim and possible future co-governance.

Mr Samuels urged the Government to buy the island and vest it as a reserve until Ngati Kura’s Treaty claims were considered.

“If it’s sold again it will be hard to get it back, to return to the customary owners or to the people of New Zealand,” he said. - NZME

Another hot dry week that has been good for the grain harvest, but poor for dryland pasture growth rates, although feed covers are still reasonable in Canterbury after a January revival of grass.

Winter feed crops are looking good and later pasture conservation has been made with little weather interruption.

It is noticeable when driving through the region that more dairy farmers have planned to lower costs and winter cows at home by reducing stocking rates and planting brassicas on the milking platform.

Careful planning will be needed if this is done as environmental rules need to be met so nitrate leaching into the groundwater is minimised with the increased winter stocking levels.

The milk commodity prices go from bad to worse as a plentiful supply of global stocks continues to hinder any idea of a turn around, and the whole milk powder futures trades point to more falls in this week’s auction price levels.

The ANZ has reduced its milk forecast to below $4/kg ms as a Federated Farmers survey shows confidence is now at very low levels.

Worrying reports have surfaced that one bank is moving on its southern highindebted dairy clients, and real estate advertising of properties in receivership will also cause nervousness in the sector.

A Lincoln University report has shown that a percentage of dairy farmers have resisted the urge to get bigger and have instead focused on reducing debt and lifestyle as priorities for their farming business.

The double island wool sales continue and in spite of the increased seasonal supplies, the market has held up well.

Price indicators for crossbred fleece lifted and passings reduced in this positive sale, although lambs fleece appears to have come off its earlier highs.

Merino NZ again shows leadership in the sector with its promotion and research of the fibre, as they announce a $21 million PGP partnership that looks to lift the profitability and sustainability of strong wool.

Lamb More drops in schedules this week as the realities of a weak frozen market are reflected back to lamb returns; these are now back to where they were three years ago.

The early kill, poor prices and unexpected feed levels this summer have lowered processing numbers, and some plants have had to shorten shifts and hours worked on the chain.

The feed supply has increased demand for store sheep and big numbers at the Sheffield sale saw prices revive, even with this poor lamb and mutton market.

Beef More stable beef schedules this week as a shortage of stock is compensating for an easing Chinese market due to increased volumes of beef being offered from Brazil.

Lack of supply is also driving the saleyard market for both prime and store animals, as summer prices refuse to fall like they traditionally do at this time of year.

Dairy beef weaners have been selling strongly and indicate very positive prospects for a strong beef weaner market.

Deer Venison prices have now settled into their summer lows at prices about $55 per head above last year, and are now at levels sure to encourage a long-awaited reinvestment into female animals.

With a strong industry marketing strategy for growth based around the Cervena brand, the sector looks well placed to handle a period of better venison pricing for a year or two yet.

Poor forecasting due to unexpected changes – Alliance

The Alliance CEO is responding to criticism of meat processors’ pre-Christmas forecasts for lamb schedules, saying no-one in the industry predicted the amount of change in so many key markets.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury Meat and Fibre chairman Michael Salvesen expressed frustration at the poor forecasting of returns in his monthly report to members.

Mr Salvesen said meat processors should only be forecasting what they know they can pay.

Alliance CEO David Surveyor conceded it had been difficult to make price predictions, but when the co-operative did forecast prices it took into account a number of factors including the state of global markets, the supply of livestock and the exchange rate.

“However, we recognise as a cooperative that our farmers want us to provide a forecast and we do this based on the best information that we have available at the time.”

Mr Surveyor said a forecast was only the best estimate at a point in time.

“And the fact is that no-one in the industry predicted this amount of change in so many key markets.”

Farmers were in shock following the recent $0.30 cent downgrade in scheduled lamb prices – with sub $100 lambs becoming the new normal.

Mr Surveyor acknowledged prices were lower than expected but said this was a direct reflection of the challenging global markets.

“The tough trading conditions are being driven by a number of factors across multiple markets and are impacting demand for a range of products, including red meat.”

The Chinese market continued to be impacted by a slowing economy with continued investor uncertainty further denting consumer confidence. Coupled with high domestic kill, this had impacted demand for lamb imports across the board, he said.

“Middle East consumer confidence has also deteriorated as oil producing economies deal with geopolitical tensions and adjust to 12-year low oil prices. The unfavourable exchange rate for UK sterling versus the Euro has also seen more domestic product in the UK market, reducing demand for New Zealand imports.”

Alliance was doing its very best to hold up schedule prices and absorb as much of the downside as they could, he said. “However, we cannot pay more for livestock than the market will pay.”

He encouraged farmers to discuss their particular processing requirements with their livestock representative.

Leeston farmer may have snatched wheat record back

It’s unofficial, but it’s set the English/New Zealand wheat record rivalry alight with news that a Leeston farmer’s wheat crop yielded above the current world record on Sunday.

In typical understated Kiwi style, David Birkett’s 7.3 hectare Oakley wheat crop had nothing “fancy” in the way of inputs but still managed to yield 16.7 tonnes.

The current world record was snatched from New Zealand by British farmer Tim Lamyman with a yield of 16.5 tonnes per hectare last year.

Mr Birkett said it had “crossed his mind” to enter for a world record, but he didn’t think it would be as high yielding as it was.

He put the result down to a favourable season in which most Canterbury arable farmers are experiencing excellent yields.

“Our grain fill period was really good and we had good sunshine hours.”

Mr Birkett said the season started off dry with only 11mm falling between September and December, but he applied very little water at just 120mm.

“Wheat likes a little bit of stress.

We were very lucky. Our soils are very moisture retentive here – it gets us through.”

Consistently producing high yielding crops over the past decade, David’s previous best was 16.3 tonnes.

In the third year of the FAR 20 by 20 trial on his farm, he believes the management he has learned from the research has been invaluable.

“We’ve certainly learnt a lot about canopy structure. It’s al-

lowed us to design the canopy how we want it.”

Getting the basics right with low inputs was his recipe for success. Operating a no-tillage system David has been incorporating residues for over 20 years and believes that is really starting to

pay dividends.

But he thinks he won’t be the only one with high yields this season.

“We’ve got a season in front of us that is conducive to big yields.

It would be great to get the record back in New Zealand.”

■ To make the dough, place the flour, baking powder, salt, olive oil and melted butter in a food processor. Process until the

mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. With the motor running, pour in the water. Process until the mixture forms a ball. If necessary, add an extra 1 to 2 tablespoons of water.

■ Knead lightly then wrap in plastic wrap and set aside.

olive oil in a frying pan. Add the chicken mince, onion and garlic and brown over medium heat.

Add the red pepper, spinach, tomato paste, pinenuts, parsley, water, smoked paprika, salt and ground cumin. Simmer for 3 to 4 minutes then set aside to cool.

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Take walnut sized pieces of the dough and roll into a very thin circle. Place a heaped teaspoon of the cooled filling on to the dough. Fold the dough in half and press the edges with a fork to seal. Place on an oven tray.

Continue with the remaining dough and filling.

Bake the empanadas in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until they are golden brown.

Serve immediately.

A

shburton people today are used to clean water coming out of a tap when it is turned on and most don’t give much thought to where it comes from.

Those who have thought about it may be aware of several bore fields dotted about the town, supplying water from deep underground. Those who have lived in the town a few years may recall the earlier gravity scheme, bringing water in pipes from the south branch of the Ashburton River.

Those two schemes were quite unobtrusive, almost hidden.

There was an even earlier scheme, the original town supply water scheme, that was extremely obvious to all as it used a very tall tower, topped with a huge steel tank, to provide pressure to the system.

Finding water for domestic use was a major problem for early Ashburton residents, made worse by an increasing need for water for firefighting as the town expanded, mainly with wooden buildings.

Many people saved water from house roofs, others used windmills to pump from shallow underground aquifers. The river had water, but there was no simple way of pumping and reticulating it. What was needed was a highpressure system, but how to pressurise the system in a town that was notably short of high ground

to place a supply tank.

The answer was a water tower, standing higher than the highest point of the town. Discussion about such a plan began as early as 1888 when the council was considering buying a steam fire engine and installing large underground tanks to hold water for firefighting.

This came to nothing and it was 1911 before Ashburton got a reticulated high pressure water scheme. Even then, because Hampstead was a separate town and the area west of Oak Grove was not part of the town, it only served the area within the avenues.

It was at a time when locallygenerated electricity was becoming available in a small way.

New gas-powered engines and generators were being installed in buildings in Kermode Street that later became the headquarters of the power board. Advantage was taken of this to make the engines dual purpose, pumping water as well as generating electricity.

The water was drawn from a well in the same area as the engines and pumped to a large steel tank on top of a tall steel tower at the highest point of the town, at the south end of Oak Grove. From there it was piped throughout the town.

The water tower became a real landmark, visible from throughout Ashburton. Originally access to the tank for servicing was by a vertical steel ladder, leaning out-

wards near the top. Many tradesmen hesitated to climb it and eventually steps were installed, zig-zagging around the tower. In spite of a locked gate and barbed wire at the bottom the steps made access a lot easier for some of the more adventurous youth of the town.

One of the more notable occasions was at the time of New Zealand’s first challenge for the Americas Cup when slogans were painted on the tank. Because of its visibility the water tower was decorated with strings of coloured lights and a large star each Christmas.

Eventually growth and inclusion in Ashburton of other areas such as Netherby, Hampstead and Allenton, meant the 1911 scheme was no longer adequate.

A new scheme was installed, drawing water from an underground gallery in Greenstreet, far enough above the town for pressure to be built up in the pipe before it reached the town.

The old tower was used only for storing water for emergency purposes. Its original peaked roof had been damaged and replaced with a flat one.

On April 4, 1989, two large cranes were used to dismantle the 79-year-old tower, part of the tank going to the beef feedlot at Wakanui and part to Mount Hutt Station. The huge steel beams from the legs were reshaped into racks for holding timber at an Ashburton timber yard.

In brief Goromaru staying put The Queensland Reds have denied reports star Japanese recruit Ayumu Goromaru has already committed to leaving the Super Rugby franchise at the end of the season to join French club Toulon.

A spokesperson for the Queensland Rugby Union said claims from French TV station Canal Plus that Goromaru has agreed to a one-year contract with the reigning European champions were “not true”.

Parker rejects Martin The promoters of New Zealand heavyweight Joseph Parker turned down an offer to host a title fight against American IBF champion Charles Martin due to the expense involved, but say the door has been left open for a mandatory challenge in the near future.

Southpaw Martin will make the first defence of his title against Englishman Anthony Joshua in London on April 9 – a fight likely to be very lucrative for both men, but also very difficult for the incumbent – after Duco Events turned Martin down.

Aussies crush Black Caps New Zealand’s record-equalling 13 undefeated test reign at home is over.

Like a self-assured arm wrestler, Australian eyes locked on the Black Caps, steadily flexed their muscles and crushed them out of the first test.

The visitors won by an innings and 52 runs after dismissing New Zealand for 327 in their second innings and cannot lose the series when the second test starts in Christchurch on Saturday.

The match was over midway through the fourth day after New Zealand’s lower order again showed pluck. Tim Southee (48 off 23 balls) and Mark Craig (33 not out) added 59 runs off 54 balls for the ninth wicket. Southee pasted three sixes and five fours as a crowd consolation prize. He now has the most sixes for a No.9 or No.10 batsman in test cricket.

However, with a top score across both innings of 63 from opener Tom Latham, no New Zea-

lander demonstrated anywhere near enough application to foot it with the new world number ones.

The chances of surviving and advancing, as occurred in their previous two visits to the venue against India and Sri Lanka, always looked slim.

The only other time New Zealand have produced such a 13test streak without a loss was between March 1987 and January 1992.

In his 100th consecutive test from debut, captain Brendon McCullum extended his world record but this match was anything but an appropriate tribute to his achievement in the job since December 2012.

McCullum personified dejection as he traipsed from the wicket after getting dismissed lbw for 10 at stumps on the third day. Finding the motivation for a final hurrah in his adopted home city of Christchurch could be difficult.

McCullum seems to be under almost an unofficial contract to play, given the marketing campaign surrounding his farewell tour. His back looks to be ailing him but he has signed to play T20 franchise cricket in India, England and the West Indies this year, so suggestions he is struggling could be premature.

The hosts started the day at 178-4, lost Corey Anderson for a duck, but had Henry Nicholls and B-J Watling eke out 34 runs in the first hour.

Nathan Lyon provided the key breakthrough after drinks.

With fielders surrounding the bat, Watling looked cramped on the crease. As Lyon’s off-spinner turned, Watling played around it.

An inside edge clattered into the stumps.

Lyon finished with Australia’s best figures for the innings (four for 91) and for the match (seven for 123).

Seeing Watling trudge back for

10 brought the scent of defeat.

Other than two overthrow fives, there was little mercy from Australia as they built the foundations towards retaining their status as best in the world.

Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Marsh, Jackson Bird and Lyon each kept the pressure on.

Until the arrival of the second new ball in the 89th over, the pace bowlers exploited reverse swing which planted seeds of doubt in batting minds, despite the excellent pitch conditions. Peter Siddle didn’t bowl due to ongoing back spasms.

Nicholls provided the spine to New Zealand’s display but by the time Bird yorked him for 59 off 134 balls, the day’s narrative looked cast.

His maiden test half-century held a gem of a statistic, too. It was the highest score by a New Zealand No.4 batsman on debut, surpassing Matt Poore’s 45 v South Africa in 1952-53. - NZME

Hayden Roulston has missed out on a place in the New Zealand squad for next month’s world track cycling championships in London but our other local cyclist, Lauren Ellis, has made the grade for the women’s team. Roulston, a double Olympic medallist, has failed to force his way into the endurance line-up, which features four of the five riders that won the team pursuit world title last year. The other member of the world champion pursuit team, Regan Gough, has missed out on selection due to health grounds.

Paddon second Hayden Paddon’s future as a high calibre driver seems assured after the Kiwi ace secured the second podium of his World Rally Championship career – but the man himself says he still has important lessons to learn. The Geraldine star finished second behind world champion Sebastien Ogier in Rally Sweden over the weekend in a performance which captured eyeballs and has led to seasoned observers saying he is one of the sport’s emerging forces.

Irish eyes are smiling at Lake Coleridge Irishman Coleman Burke was all smiles after recording victory in Tinwald Cycling Club’s 45km handicap event on the picturesque Lake Coleridge course on Sunday.

Burke, who had shown last week that he was riding into some good form, left nothing to chance, riding off the front of his mark and finding the lead on the return journey to the finish line.

The juniors and division two riders contested a 14km handicap event.

Lawrence Pithie, riding off the scratch mark, stormed through the field to take line and fastest time honours, covering the distance in 22.42secs while Abe O’Donnell was hot on his tail to secure second spot and Oliver Davidson continued his

good form with a hard-fought third place. Connor Leov, Bella Roulston and Ethan Titheridge filled the top half dozen spots.

First time starter, Debbie Skinner took the major honours in division two with the ever consistent Hilary Singlewood claiming second place from Kerry Clough, who also recorded the fastest time.

Next week the club heads to Hinds to contest a 50km handicap event.

Ross Taylor and Mitchell Santner have been ruled out of the Black Caps second ANZ Test against Australia in Christchurch beginning on Saturday. Having suffered a muscular tear in his left side during the ODI Series against Pakistan, Taylor’s recovery has not reached a point where he’ll be fit to partake in the final Test. Santner’s right foot has also not healed to a level which would allow him to participate, after suffering bone bruising during the ChappellHadlee series. Coach Mike Hesson said it was unfortunate for the pair to miss out. “Everyone wants to play against Australia, so both guys are understandably disappointed to be missing out,” said Hesson.

Back to it after long lay-off

It’s been a decade since Ashburton lawyer Tim Silva had a crack at the Coast to Coast but that didn’t stop him leading the veterans’ Mountain Race across the finish line.

“It was 10 years to the day since I ran that track and it felt pretty good,” he said.

Silva began working out at EA Networks Centre’s gym about six months ago, which convinced him to give the country’s biggest endurance race another go.

This time round he opted for the mountain run, rather than tackle the full course.

“I couldn’t do the whole event now – I wouldn’t have the time to do the training, so being able to focus on the mountain run, which is probably my favourite part anyway, puts it back within reach,” Silva said.

“The mountain run is an event in its own right anyway, that and the river.”

While he was happy to be back in the competition, on the shorter course it was by no means an easy feat.

“I definitely noticed my legs were packing up toward the end – going up was okay but coming back down the other side it started hurting a bit,” Silva said.

“I got to about 5km out from the finish and my knees started locking up – I sort of hobbled from there.

“But it was a great day, there wasn’t much water in the river – so the crossings were pretty good.”

But the pain hasn’t put him off and he’s already made plans to be back for next year’s competition.

“It’s the sort of race you never really retire from – you always want to do one more,” he said.

“It’s just such a great event, it’s really well organised, it’s fun on the course and there’s a great atmosphere with the marshals and the other competitors.”

Between now and then Silva and a team of his co-workers from Tavendale and Partners plan to tackle the Routeburn Classic in April.

Open up for grabs Christchurch may have shot itself in the foot as it tries to cling to hosting rights for the New Zealand Women’s Open. Clearwater’s hosting rights contract is now up and it’s understood Auckland is now the frontrunner to take over.

New Zealand Golf CEO Dean Murphy says crowd numbers could’ve been better this year.

Murphy says they will consult with Lydia Ko about her preference for hosting the event. Ko has won the event three times. A decision is expected within the next couple of months.

Kiwi sailors too good Australian sailors Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen admit they must cut mistakes for their title defence at the Rio Olympics after their New Zealand rivals dominated another 49er world championships. Survives 500km/h crash A 69-year-old drag racer was lucky to walk away unscathed after the parachute on his car failed to open at almost 500km/h. Reaching a speed of 494km/h to win a nitro racing event in California on Saturday, Gary Densham’s car skidded across a sand trap and into a net, almost splitting it in two. Footage of the incident has been viewed more than 20,000 times in less than two days on YouTube, with Densham reportedly considering retirement given the written-off wreck was his only drag car.

Top times at Mount Hutt College swim champs

The Annual Mount Hutt College swimming sports event produced some top results at junior and senior levels.

Students competed in freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and relay.

The seniors also vied for the converted Lachlan Cup, which is a freestyle race contested over three lengths.

On Thursday, the juniors took to the pool with Reuben Brown and Piper Hood taking out the boys’ and girls’ overall Year 7 honours respectively.

Meanwhile, Jarrad Hill was the best of the Year 8/9 boys and Courtney Elliott won the girls’ Year 8/9.

Courtney also set a new 180m freestyle record with a time of 2.14.15, breaking the previous record set by big sister Aimee in 2013.

England’s rugby league chief Nigel Wood has defended Wayne Bennett’s appointment as national team coach, saying the country’s exciting group of players deserve the best chance to succeed.

The choice of Bennett, the most successful coach in the Australian game, brought criticism from two prominent Super League coaches, Keiron Cunningham (St Helens) and Daryl Powell (Castleford), both former Great Britain internationals, who argued the job should have gone to Leeds’ treble-winning boss Brian McDermott. But Woods had no doubt they got the right man.

“We concluded that England’s chances of success would be enhanced if we asked Wayne to take the role,” he said.

Arsenal blow title race wide open

By Simon CamBerS Arsenal blew the title race open as they edged out 10-man leaders Leicester 2-1 yesterday, cutting the gap at the top of the Premier League to just two points.

Substitute Danny Welbeck, who came on in the 83rd minute for his first appearance in 10 months because of injury, headed the winner to deny Leicester a point.

The win pushed Arsenal up to second for a few hours but Tottenham overtook them after a 2-1 win at fourth-placed Manchester City in the day’s late match.

Leicester took the lead just before half-time through a Jamie Vardy penalty, his 19th league goal of the season.

But the sending off of Danny Simpson early in the second half for a second yellow card gave Arsenal hope and they equalised

the win was crucial to their title hopes. “It was a pivotal moment today because the mathematics meant it could be eight points or it could be two points,” he told the BBC. “That is a great change.

“There’s a long way to go, we play a lot of big teams. But we had a bad spell where we couldn’t win for four games and have now won two on the bounce. We have come out of that bad spell and still have a good chance.”

Vardy slammed in the penalty but after Simpson was sent off, Leicester were under the cosh and Arsenal equalised on 70 minutes when Walcott volleyed the ball home after a perfect cushioned header by Olivier Giroud.

Kasper Schmeichel made a string of outstanding saves but Welbeck then flicked home a header from Ozil’s free-kick to win it for Arsenal.

Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri questioned the red card but said they were still in a strong position.

“We are still top of the table, got two points more - we must carry on and smile,” he said. “We lost to our opponents - we must say well done.”

Tottenham took the lead early in the second half through a contentious Harry Kane penalty, awarded for handball against Raheem Sterling.

Kelechi Iheanacho equalised 16 minutes from time with a powerful finish but Christian Eriksen won it for Spurs in the 83rd minute as City lost at home again a week after a 3-1 humbling by Leicester.

Trio shine in Coast to Coast

Mt Hutt College students Mark Wilson, Lily Spittal and Joseph Todhunter exceeded all expectations at this year’s Coast to Coast, placing third in the schools’ section and finishing as fastest team overall in the mixed three-person teams’ category.

The 2016 race started on the West Coast, at Kumara Beach on Friday, and spanned across the width of the South Island, finishing on the east coast at New Brighton Beach in Christchurch.

Competitors left on foot, running 3km inland to their waiting bikes, and then followed the

Taramakau River to the foothills of the Southern Alps where they switched their bikes for runners.

As the team’s cyclist, 16-yearold Todhunter contested a 55km ride on day one, and 15km and 70km courses on day two.

Runner Wilson took on a lungbusting 33km mountain run, where he encountered multiple river crossings and an elevation of nearly 800m on his way to Goat Pass and the start of his descent.

The 17-year-old’s performance was made even more impressive by having recently recovered from a broken leg.

Mt Hutt, who were the only

school team that included a female competitor, placed third behind Waimea College and Greymouth High School but topped the mixed three-person teams’ category as fastest overall.

Mt Hutt College teacher Glen Currie, who has plenty of Coast to Coast experience, helped the students prepare for the race, but insisted the results were solely down to the young trio’s hard work and dedication.

“I’ve taken them out through the course and written them training programmes, but, at the end of the day, they’re the ones that have to do it,” he said.

“I’m very proud, very impressed, they didn’t just do it, their times were very impressive, so everything they pulled off is quite incredible.”
