DAISY.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
A former Ashburton College teacher has been barred from teaching after admitting he engaged in inappropriate relationships with three students. The Guardian can reveal former teacher Michael BurrellSmith, 25, has been deregistered, censured and ordered to pay more than $3000 in costs after being found to have committed serious misconduct by the New Zealand Teachers’ Disciplinary Tribunal. The tribunal released the de-
cision yesterday, which related to a series of events that took place in 2013. The notice of charge, dated September 6, 2013, states that Mr Burrell-Smith committed serious misconduct by engaging in inappropriate relationships with three students, whose names are suppressed. An application to have Mr Burrell-Smith’s name suppressed was denied. The serious misconduct included exchanging intimate text messages and phone calls with students, writing notes to

a student with lists of romantic songs and drawings, and telling a student he wanted to hug her. It was also alleged Mr Burrell-Smith attempted to fulfill the responsibilities of a counsellor, a role he was unappointed to and unqualified for. The students were found to have suffered emotional harm as a result of his behaviour. The tribunal stated in its decision that while there was no evidence to suggest Mr BurrellSmith had engaged in a physical relationship with the students, the relationships were “un-

doubtedly romantic and overtly sexual”, and there was potential for them to become physical. The New Zealand Teachers’ Council received a complaint from Ashburton College in July 2013 over Mr Burrell-Smith’s behaviour. The school had previously given him “specific attention” towards ensuring he maintained professional relationships with students. This included a meeting with Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan on October 30, 2012, where, according to the
report, Mr McMillan “strongly reminded” him of the expectations of teachers and their interactions with students. A development and support plan was put in place following the meeting. Mr Burrell-Smith may apply for re-registration in the future, but would be required to demonstrate that he fully appreciated the seriousness of his actions and was no longer a risk to students. Mr Burrell-Smith did not respond to requests for comment by deadline yesterday. Ph 03 307 7900 to subscribe!
