Eight district councillors and Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel did a complete about-face yesterday over the future of Ashburton’s town centre water feature.
Last month they agreed to relocate the feature to the Ashburton Domain, providing a clean sheet for plans to develop the town centre. Neil Brown, Selwyn Price, Russell Ellis and Mark Malcolm were opposed to shifting the fea-
ture and, while he may have lost on the day, Brown stuck to his guns and gathered enough support to have a crack at revoking that motion. He wasn’t the only one upset by the decision. Social media ran hot
and an online petition gathered more than 1400 signatures from people opposed to the relocation. The water feature was an integral part of the town centre, people said, and redevelopment work should take that into account.
To get a motion to revoke that decision on the table, Brown needed the support of four other councillors.
