Strike ‘long time coming’ BY KATIE TODD
KATIE.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Around 500 rallying teachers, principals and supporters flooded the footpaths of Ashburton yesterday during a day-long strike to demand better pay and better working conditions. Industrial action by teachers’ union NZEI Te Rui Roa resulted in
17 schools closing in Mid Canterbury and hundreds more across the country. It was the first time a teachers’ strike had been held in 24 years and local principals said it was a matter of education having reached a crisis point. Strikers and supporters in Ashburton used placards and chants
to promote the key improvements for which they are asking – more time to teach, lead and support students with additional needs, as well as a pay rise to attract more people to the profession. NZEI Mid Canterbury branch president Jade Tonks, of Ashburton Intermediate School, said
teachers are prepared to continue pushing for a better future for the education industry. Addressing the crowd in the Ashburton Domain yesterday morning, Tonks asked whether people would prefer a geographically based rolling strike or a twoday strike, should their demands continue to be ignored by the
Ministry of Education. The crowd were overwhelmingly in favour of the latter, as were crowds in other union-organised gatherings across Canterbury.
