Booze-fuelled violence spree A young man who assaulted five people in a series of alcohol-fuelled attacks in the Ashburton CDB has been warned all sentencing options are on the table when he next returns to court.

Verokia Akama appeared in the Timaru District Court yesterday, where he admitted three counts of injuring with intent and one of wounding with intent.

He was jointly charged with causing

grievous bodily harm with intent.

The 20-year-old was drinking alcohol with associates at an Ashburton address before he and three others headed into town, arriving shortly before 1am on February 1 last year.

On entering a local nightclub, Akama spotted a work colleague who he promptly punched to the ground. While lying unconscious on the floor Akama

kicked him in the face several times.

Akama’s second victim paused to look at the unconscious man and was hit in the jaw. He was also left lying on the floor.

Museum attendance soars

Visitors to the Ashburton Museum have nearly doubled since it moved to the new heritage centre on West Street.

In the 12 months to the end of June, 13,778 visitors passed through the museum doors to check out exhibits that show how the district has grown and changed over the past 200 years.

Museum director Tanya Robinson said the museum had been aiming for 8000 visitors and was thrilled at the patronage, which included locals, schoolchildren and tourists.

The museum includes long-term and shorter-term exhibits about Mid Canterbury’s past and Robinson said space destined for a café would now be used to accommodate visiting exhibitions, which were more about New Zealand’s history.

She is already investigating a travelling exhibit from the New Zealand Rugby Museum and another about gardening aimed at children.

The museum’s current Paper, Scissors, Rock exhibition was also

proving a big hit, with 1400 visitors in the recent school holidays alone.

Robinson said many of the local visitors were repeat customers, visiting with school groups initially then returning with family and friends. Many remarked they were surprised to have spent so much time looking around.

“We also get a lot of school groups coming in for education trips. We had every student from Hampstead School here recently over a 10-day period.”

She said ratepayers who had not been inside the new building should make the effort to visit.

“We should all be incredibly proud of what has been achieved developing the collection and take the opportunity to experience and enjoy a sense of history and what it means to be from Ashburton.”

Robinson said she was looking forward to taking over the café space later in the year and bringing some iconic stories from New Zealand’s history.

The boom in numbers means the museum is also looking for more volunteers to man the front desk welcoming visitors and sharing their own history.

Cupcakes a big hit with students Hundreds of cupcakes topped with sweet icing and colourful decorations generated a buzz amongst Borough School children yesterday ... and some cash for the local SPCA. Borough teacher Donna Topham said about 700 cupcakes, baked and donated by parents, came to school yesterday so they could be decorated

by students then sold to help the animal welfare group.

Some students turned their cupcakes into edible turtles or sheep, others went berserk with tiny marshmallows and candy pieces; there was plenty of fun in the making and the eating.

The cupcake event, which was part of the SPCA’s national cupcake fundraiser, was instigated

by the children.

Topham said students had been learning about who takes care of the animals in the community and how people can help raise funds for them.

Students who came to school with money were also happy to share their buying power with those that had none, so the cupcakes were shared around too.

Booze-fuelled violence spree From P1 The group then decamped to another club and continued drinking until closing time. Just short of 3am Akama knocked out a man on East Street before moving off and attacking another person near the fountain across the road. He too was left unconscious.

In the ensuing fracas Akama had lost track of his associates but met up with co-accused Henare Te Mana Toa Carroll in the West Street carpark where they came upon a woman they knew chatting to two men.

Akama, and allegedly Carroll,

set upon one of the men, punching him in the head and kicking him as he lay on the ground.

The victims of Akama’s violence were all injured. Two sustained concussions, one has some hearing loss as a result and another was left with a broken jaw and teeth.

He had previously denied the charges and the case was set down for a jury trial, however yesterday he admitted all matters.

Defence lawyer Rupert Glover said Akama was keen to participate in a restorative justice conference where he could person-

ally apologise to those he had injured. He will be sentenced on November 4.

Judge Joanna Maze warned Akama, who has no previous convictions, he should take no comfort from being remanded on bail and come prepared for all sentencing options.

The District Court jury trial for Carroll resumes today after jurors were dismissed yesterday to accommodate a dispute centred on misidentification.

Carroll is further charged with two counts of injuring with intent and one of aggravated assault, involving three separate victims.

Broadband use soars locally

In just 18 months, the average broadband data consumption in the Ashburton District has increased by 115 per cent.

Figures released by Chorus show that in January 2015, the average use per household in the district was 39GB; in June this year it was 83GB. At the same time connection speeds have soared by 74 per cent. Nationally the average Kiwi home uses 102GB of broadband data per month.

Under the rural broadband initiative started last year, across the Rangitata Electorate, MP Jo

Goodhew said there were more than 756 connections.

This compared to 300 before the initiative started.

“Under the RBI programme, Vodafone has built or upgraded 13 towers and Chorus has upgraded 16 lines in the area.”

The government’s investment of $300 million in the project would enable 300,000 rural households and businesses throughout New Zealand to access improved connectivity, Goodhew said.

“Faster broadband enables remote households to overcome isolation and helps them connect with their communities. It’s

also revolutionising local agribusinesses by allowing companies and farmers to streamline their daily operations.”

Chorus data shows that at March 31 the UFB network across the Ashburton District was 30 per cent built, with a 21 per cent uptake in terms of connections. In terms of a national uptake, however, there were thousands of New Zealanders who had UFB available but who had not connected, Chorus head of market insight Rosalie Nelson said.

“Right now more than 700,000 New Zealanders, that’s the combined population of Dunedin, Christchurch and Hamilton, can

access faster broadband than they currently have,” she said.

Ashburton was one of the first towns in New Zealand to have its rollout of UFB complete. This was in March last year.

By May the demand for fibre was growing, with 1116 households, businesses, schools and health facilities connecting.

At that stage, the uptake was the sixth highest in the country. Now the district is in the top third.

In addition to the Chorus UFB roll-out, EA Networks has also laid fibre over a network that stretches more than 500 kilometres around the district.

Fundraising Fireman’s Ball promises to be a blast

Firefighters will be lighting up the dancefloor in October for a special project close to their hearts.

They are holding a Fireman’s Ball to raise funds for their fire museum, which contains almost every working appliance in their 142-year history.

Firefighter Scott Donaldson said they were the only brigade in the country to have such a comprehensive collection of appliances.

All but one had been retained and restored and would eventually be on display at the fire museum at the Plains Historic Village in Tinwald.

The museum will double as a heritage facility and education centre, with a strong message on safety and fire prevention. It will host visitors, schools and special interest groups so they can learn the history of the local brigade and share life-saving messages.

Donaldson said the brigade was trying to raise about $240,000 to extend its existing building at the historic village so it could house all the restored vintage equipment.

The ball will be on October 8 and tickets are already selling like hotcakes.

Tait avoids a prison sentence An Ashburton man whose obsession with his former girlfriend led to offending has avoided a prison sentence.

Joeylee Kevin Tait, 25, appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Timaru District Court yesterday for sentencing on charges of threatening to kill, possessing an offensive weapon, wilful damage and twice breaching a protection order.

He will spend the next six months on community detention, with a 6.30am to 6pm curfew, and 12 months under a sentence of intensive supervision.

The court was told Tait’s relationship with the woman had ended two years earlier and while he had not moved on she had established another relationship.

When she rebuffed a request to reconcile he reacted poorly. In October last year, he went to her home and slashed the tyre on a parked vehicle before leaving the property.

He returned a short time later and entered the house, presented a knife with a retractable blade and threatened to kill her new partner.

The man promptly saw Tait off the property. He was later arrested and spent two weeks in custody before being remanded on bail.

During this time he again breached the protection order by contacting the woman.

Defence counsel Lee Lee Heah said Tait was incapable of controlling his emotions in a rational manner and was obsessed with the victim at that time.

He has no previous convictions involving violence and has not offended since the incident last year.

As part of his sentence Tait must undertake counselling. Judge Maze attached a judicial monitoring clause to the sentence, under which she will receive regular reports of his progress.

“If I’m not satisfied you are likely to be looking at home detention or imprisonment,” she said.

Water supply security high

Drinking water supplies around the Ashburton District have top line security in place to ensure the chances of contamination are almost non-existent.

Havelock North residents are faced with a water supply that appears to have been infected by e-coli, but Ashburton District Council assets manager Andrew Guthrie said the chances of a similar situation occurring in the district’s water supplies are almost zero.

“We have full time chlorination

on our schemes and that should be a big reassurance for people.

Having this in place provides extra backup,” Guthrie said.

The seven bores providing water for Ashburton town were all deep and tagged by the Ministry of Health as coming from secure groundwater sites.

“This means it would be very difficult for any infection to get in,” he said.

Water supplies were tested regularly with samples sent to an accredited laboratory. If any quality issues were identified the council was notified immediately and

the issue dealt with.

Monitoring equipment on all bores was calibrated and tested regularly and the quality control system was as rigid as it could possibly be, Guthrie said.

“We’ve been proactive in making sure we’re putting in absolutely the best treatment we can by having chlorination of supplies as a background treatment to address any problems.”

Rural villages had shallower wells but again, the use of permanent chlorination meant water supply integrity was maintained, he said.

“We do all we can across the district to ensure security of supply.”

In Havelock North, schools were forced to close as hundreds of people fell sick with a stomach bug. Hastings mayor Lawrence Yule said e-coli entered the town’s water supply between the twice-a-week testing regime, however, action was taken as soon as testing confirmed contaminates were present, he said.

The Havelock council has been criticised by ratepayers for failing to inform the community about the e-coli infiltration.

School’s missing foundation stone located The sharp eyes of an Ashburton District Council staff member has saved an historic foundation stone from becoming rubble.

Property maintenance officer David Hampton discovered the stone lying in a council work yard and was quick to recognise it as coming from the former Ashburton Technical School.

Hampton had read an article about the search for the foundation stone which was laid by mayor of the day Henry Davis in October 1912.

The Ashburton Technical School was located on Cameron Street, behind today’s Balmoral Hall.

The school was used until 1972. It then served as the Borough Council offices and later as the Ashburton Museum until 1995.

The building was demolished in 2006 after a two-year fight by an Ashburton trust, hoping to gain the interests of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

It failed, and the demolition was ordered in early 2006.

No one was more excited by the find than Ashburton Museum director Tanya Robinson.

to clean and restore the stone, and a final location to house it will be decided in coming weeks.

The technical school opened

with 110 students, but technical classes had been provided around the Ashburton district since the early 1900s.

The hand of friendship will be extended by the Ashburton District Council and the district’s business community to a delegation of visitors from Xian Yang, China this week. The delegation arrives in Ashburton on Friday and will visit several businesses before lunching at The Lake House. A two and a half hour business meeting with five organisations will then be held before delegates sign a Friendship City agreement. The delegation will spend Friday night in Methven and on Saturday will visit several rural businesses before jetboating on the Rakaia River and later visiting Terrace Downs.

This week’s visit came after a civic and business team from Ashburton visited both Xian Yang and Ashburton’s sister city Puyang, in October last year. During that visit, a friendship agreement was discussed with Xian Yang’s civic leaders, resulting in this week’s visit. Xian Yang is home to the Fineboon Dairy Company which is establishing a goat milk processing plant at the Ashburton Business Estate.

Big Brother will be watching us New Zealand’s foreign intelligence agency will be able to spy on New Zealanders under legislation introduced by the Government.

Prime Minister John Key announced details of the law change yesterday after sign-off by Cabinet.

He cited the threat of terror groups such as Isis and a growing number of cyber threats.

“This bill is the most significant

reform of the [intelligence] agencies’ legislation in our country’s history.

“New Zealanders can be assured we are taking careful and responsible steps to protect their safety and security.”

While allowing the GCSB to spy on New Zealanders, the Government says both it and the SIS will only be allowed to do so on the grounds of national security and

after a thorough warranting process. The legislation is in response to an intelligence review by Sir Michael Cullen and Dame Patsy Reddy, released in March with 107 recommendations and proposing a single piece of legislation to cover both agencies.

The Government has accepted the majority of the recommendations, and the bill will have its first reading on Thursday.

Allowing the GCSB to spy on New Zealanders without requiring a warrant to do so on the behalf of other parties breaks a longstanding split between the SIS and GCSB, under which the GCSB could only spy on foreigners and the SIS on New Zealanders.

The legislation covering the GCSB already allows it to spy on behalf of other agencies with a warrant that is approved by the

Minister in Charge of SIS and GCSB. However, in releasing his review in March Sir Michael said the GCSB had become hesitant to legally assist other agencies in such spying.

That happened after it was found to have unlawfully spied on more than 100 people due to confusion over its powers when acting on behalf of other agencies.

Ashburton hosts Masters swimmers

Ashburton played host to a group of 76 New Zealand Masters Swimming athletes who came over the weekend to compete.

The meeting ran over two days, starting on Friday evening and running all day Saturday.

Ashburton Masters Swimmers secretary Helen Argyle said five New Zealand swimming records were broken and she won a gold medal for the over 70 age group.

Ashburton swimmer Allison Flemming also won a silver and the relay team, with an overall age of 400 years, won the relay competition.

There were a total of six Ashburton people who took part in the meet, which was held at the EA Networks Centre pool.

Argyle said New Zealand Masters Swimming Ashburton caters to swimmers of all ages and abilities.

While some regional clubs have strict rules on skill levels for members, she said in Ashburton they were always looking for new members.

Anyone can join from the age of 20 and they are registered as premasters, and from 25 years of age members can begin to compete in any of the competitions.

Busted raises nearly $3000

This year’s Busted fundraiser raised almost $3000 for the Mid Canterbury Cancer Society.

Eleven Mid Canterbury artists gave their time and talent to create unique busts, which were auctioned off last week in The Somerset Grocer.

Busted Mid Canterbury organiser Carol Johns said the night was a success, despite a smaller crowd, which she said could have been due to the cold.

were modelled on mannequins, with the exception of the bust of Mid Canterbury senior rugby captain Jon Dampney.

Johns said there were four busts that were not purchased on the night and they will be available on the Hoops On Air Facebook page.

The busts were decorated in a variety of different ways and Johns said the auction raised the same, or possibly more, than last year’s.

Money raised from the auction will be put towards Mid Canterbury projects.

The doors to the Ashburton Trust Event Centre will swing open for this year’s Merry Little Christmas Market on November 27.

Rain or shine more than 65 stallholders are expected to set up shop at the third annual market in a not-to-be missed event.

A gold coin will get you a glass of bubbles or juice to sip on while you browse the wide selection of goods on offer.

“This year we have a number

of new stallholders selling everything from children’s clothing to chutneys and jams – there truly is something for everyone,” organiser Casey Rose said.

“Our stallholders come from Hanmer Springs to Pleasant Point and without them the day would not be as successful as it is.”

The first six rows of seating will be taken out of the auditorium and the stage cleared to make room for stallholders. The Bradford Room and the top foy-

er upstairs will also be utilised for the market.

“It’s always such a great atmosphere and it’s a great way for us to open up the building while hosting an event to show off what the building has to offer,” Rose said.

With limited space left prospective stallholders need to be quick to book in for this great event.

Dance to send our girls to Nelson

The Mid Canterbury Under 15 Girls Hockey Team are doing a special party fitness Zumba class to raise funds for their trip to the National U15 Girls’ Championships next month.

The team, which is made up of girls from around the Mid Canterbury area, was selected in trials at the start of June.

The class will be run by Zumba Ashburton and ticket sales proceeds are going to the team.

Tickets will be on sale at the door for the class which is being held at the Netherby School Hall at 6.30pm on August 22.

Nicola Armstrong, whose daughter Emily is in the hockey team, said a Zumba class was a fun way for the girls to get their friends involved in fundraising.

“The girls thought it would be a fun fitness thing to ask their friends to come along to,” she said.

There will also be a quiz night on August 26, and Rural Transport has challenged local businesses to try and beat them on the night.

Success attracts money Sue Newman

ife’s tough at the top, particularly if you’re an Olympic athlete.

As we do every Olympics, we send off our best and our most finely-honed athletes across a range of disciplines, to do their best on the world stage.

Inevitably they go with high expectations from the Kiwi public, particularly those who have performed at the top of their discipline in the past or in the lead up to the big event. They go, knowing they carry the expectations of their countrymen and women on their shoulders.

In the years before the games begin millions of dollars have been spent on training those top athletes. Our high performance sports money is small compared to that spent in many countries and it’s dolled out according to very strict criteria.

Unlike our cousin Australia, we don’t have the national wealth to have well-funded highperformance sports academies across a range of sporting codes.

Our talented kids have to rely on mum and dad to foot the bills, be the family taxi and often give up their own lives so their children can achieve. And they do it willingly, that’s the Kiwi way.

Once our young sports stars are nationally recognised, then we pick them up, nurture them and pour in the cash. And with the cash comes the expectations – we pay, you deliver.

This year, however, it seems we’re not delivering, well not as expected. While we might be disappointed as a country, take a breath before you voice that disappointment. How do you think those athletes feel?

We’re a great country at loving winners, but not so good at feeling the love when our winners don’t win.

But put it in perspective. Some of those who were expected to win gold, won silver, came fourth, also ran. Yes, it may not have been what we expected, what they expected, but they’re still up there with the world’s best. They have to live with the knowledge that on the day their best just wasn’t good enough.

The fall-out comes further down the track when the next round of high performance sports funding is handed out.

When it comes to securing those dollars, success always speaks loudest.

YOUR VIEW Mill Road drain If John Sunckell were to be elected to ECan what would he do to clarify the Mill Road ECan drain problems in Westerfield?

This drain runs next to our property and has run dry the past two summers leaving dead fish and eels in it, which swim up into it from the Ashburton River. Also ECan continues to clean the same drain annually, causing further erosion not just to the Mill Road embankment but also a culvert which crosses it as well as three fencelines which continue to subside into it.

ECan is well aware of these problems and promised to put latticing on one fenceline, but nothing further has ever come of it. We also approached ECan about a planting scheme to halt the erosion, a matter which they have never been anymore forthcoming about.

I am more than happy to show Mr Sunckell firsthand the damage that’s been caused by ECan. Richard Langdon

his week’s column comes to you from Albury, Australia.

I am part of the Tri-Lamb delegation visiting various farms and facilities, and the Australian LambEx conference.

One difference this year with the Tri-Lamb initiative is the inclusion of a Young Leaders Programme.

Each of the three Tri-Lamb countries – United States, Australia and New Zealand – have selected at least two up-and-coming young leaders to accompany their delegations.

New Zealand’s two representatives include a Lincoln student from the Gisborne region and a farm manager from the Wairarapa.

Interactions between these students and the perspectives they bring to the wider group is invaluable. They are the future and bring a younger view to the table.

One of the American students is completing her PhD on the topic of lamb taste. The eating experience and lamb taste are areas all

three countries are addressing in some shape or form.

As well as doing the normal taste-testing research of different aged, sex and raised lamb, this student is attempting to isolate the compounds within the meat that contribute to differing taste.

Discussing the topic with farmers and academics during the tour has thrown up some interesting thoughts on the link between lean meat yield and the eating experience.

It was suggested that an increased drive for high-yielding lean carcasses is leading to less intramuscular fat. This is a determining factor in the taste experience.

Should this research be successful in determining the key taste factors, our ability to supply a consistent product would be easier to achieve.

The end result is not about one lamb taste experience but about being able to market lamb with

taste grades which a consumer can select.

This research highlights the opportunities for the countries to work more closely on issues where we can all benefit from a positive outcome.

The success of the group is reliant in the belief that we are not competing with each other to market lamb, we’re competing with other forms of protein.

The group was originally formed to promote consumption of lamb in United States and create closer relationships between producers of the three participating countries.

Today the goal continues. Lamb consumption in the United States is less than 0.5kg per head per annum compared to New Zealand’s 7.5kg per head per annum.

Bringing in the younger generation will help us understand that while there is a desire to consume more lamb, it needs to be in the market in a form that fits their meal preparation habits.

As the Tri-Lamb group joins the Australian industry at the LambEx conference, we will learn more about the Australian research and further strengthen the bonds between countries for the benefit of all three lamb markets.

Concerns over possible local govt changes

O

ver the years the Government has been tinkering away, reforming bits and pieces of a number of acts that determine how local government functions.

In total, there have been 44 reforms to three key acts, the Local Government Act 2002 (LGA), the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA) and the Land Transport Management Act 2003 (LTMA) since their inceptions. Currently there are two bills before Parliament that introduce further changes.

There is an emerging concern about the lack of coherency between the acts, and their ability to deal with increased demand for urban and rural development.

In response to the housing crisis, the New Zealand Productivity Commission highlighted problems with planning legislation, saying “the lack of integration between land use, infrastructure and transport planning can make it difficult for local authorities to act promptly and consistently”.

Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) recently commissioned law firm Simpson Grierson to look at the inter-relationship between the three key acts.

The Simpson Grierson report has six main conclusions. The first is that the statutory frame-

work for local government is not broken, just worse for wear with the numerous changes made to the legislation over time.

Originally the three statutes were well aligned, with the second finding stating there was a comprehensive overarching policy framework that had the common principles of sustainability and community wellbeing incorporated into them when they were first passed.

The third conclusion that Simpson Grierson reached is the amendments made to the three acts have eroded the alignment between them.

The fourth conclusion is that recent LGA reforms have seen a focus on efficiency, but often at the expense of local democracy.

To illustrate this point, the currently proposed reforms (the Resource Legislation Amendment Bill and the Local Government Act 2002 Amendment Bill (No 2)), ultimately have the effect

of limiting local decision-making and public participation.

The Ashburton District Council has made submissions on both bills, raising our concerns about the lack of public consultation and engagement that has been identified by Simpson Grierson and supporting submissions of a similar view made by LGNZ and the Society of Local Government Managers (SOLGM).

A common theme for both of our submissions was a concern about using nationally prescriptive standards, which do not allow for local conditions, and new unilateral powers given to ministers and/or commissioners to make decisions affecting local authorities without the need for consultation or providing evidence about those decisions.

The fifth conclusion in the Simpson Grierson report is that the latest bills were drafted in haste, without consultation with the local government sector, and that there is confusion with mixed messages being given to local authorities about their role and the funding of infrastructure services.

On one hand councils are being told they need to narrow their focus on providing core services, but then are expected to provide solutions for national issues such

as housing and economic development, whilst reducing dependence on development contributions, but also being told to keep rates down to affordable levels.

The sixth finding by Simpson Grierson is that all is not lost. It is possible that the three acts could be better aligned through a more considered and consultative approach to legislative changes.

If the Government looked to engage more with local government, then the fragmentation of the legislative reforms being proposed could be avoided.

It is also suggested that one possible action is to develop another super-ministry similar to MBIE – but one that combines the Department of Internal Affairs, the Ministry for the Environment and the Ministry of Transport.

That super-ministry could then be given the task of administering the three acts and working closer with local authorities.

Imam killing raises dread As the families of a slain New York City mosque leader and his associate make funeral arrangements and continue their quest for answers in the shooting, a Muslim advocacy group is set to announce a reward for information leading to an arrest.

Imam Maulama Akonjee, 55, and Thara Uddin, 64, were both shot in the head near the Al-Furqan Jame Masjid mosque in the Ozone Park neighbourhood of Queens as they left afternoon prayers in their traditional religious attire, according to police.

“He always wants peace,” Akonjee’s son, Naim Akonjee, 21, said of his father through tears. “Why did they kill my father?”

The Council on AmericanIslamic Relations, or CAIR, is set to announce a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the shooter.

Police said they have not yet determined a motive for the killings, but some in the Bangladeshi Muslim community served by the mosque worry it could be a hate crime.

Monir Chowdhury, who worshipped daily with the two men, said he had moved to the community because of its large Bangladeshi immigrant population, but in recent months has been harassed by

Video shows abducted Chibok schoolgirls The mother of one of the Chibok girls kidnapped more than two years ago by Nigeria’s Islamic extremists saw the first proof her daughter is alive – a video of her begging Nigeria’s government to exchange detained militants for the girls’ freedom.

Chibok community leader Pogu Bitrus told The Associated Press the video was being watched at the weekly rally of the Bring Back Our Girls campaign at Unity Fountain in Abuja, the capital.

bok schoolgirls have been killed by Nigerian military air strikes, according to a new video from Boko Haram, which shows one kidnap victim pleading for authorities to bow to the extremists’ demands that they release detained militants in return for the girls.

It’s not clear how many schoolgirls have died among the 218 who remain missing.

The video posted on Twitter shows a young woman, covered in a hijab with just her face showing, who was one of the students abducted from a

remote school in northeastern Nigeria in April 2014.

She claims that some of her kidnapped classmates died in aerial bombardments by the Nigerian Air Force. She also said that 40 have been “married” to fighters.

The video shows a militant warning in the Hausa language that if President Muhammadu Buhari’s government battles Boko Haram with firepower, the girls won’t be seen again.

“Presently, some of the girls are crippled, some are terribly sick and some of them, as I had

said, died during bombardment by the Nigerian military,” the fighter says, appearing before a group of more than 40 young women in hijabs, some holding babies.

“If our members in detention are not freed, let the government and parents of the Chibok girls know that they will never find these girls again,” he said.

A small screen adaptation of the life and times of Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner is being filmed in New Zealand.

It is understood a TV adaptation of the life of the 90-year-old mogul, known for dating many of the girls who have modelled for his magazine, is under way in Auckland. Little is known about the production, including which American TV network it is being shot for, or whether or not it is related to an Amazon Prime “docu-series” called American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story announced last week. The actor playing Hefner is yet to be announced; nor is it known which part of Hefner’s life the series will focus on.

There were no other reports of injuries and no major destruction of property after six businesses were burned in the unrest a day earlier.

Police Chief Edward Flynn said at a press conference that the man whose death touched off the rioting was shot after he turned toward an officer with a gun in his hand.

$40k base pay – will others follow?

Spark’s move to pay all staff a minimum of $19.20 per hour plus benefits is a step in the right direction to retain IT specialists in Auckland, business leaders say.

The company’s new policy – called Spark Pay – means all fulltime workers not on a commission are paid a minimum salary of $40,000 a year.

Benefits such as flexible hours over summer and the ability to buy company shares with an interest-free loan are included in the policy.

Auckland Chamber of Commerce chief executive Michael Barnett said the policy was a reflection of the challenge companies were facing in attracting skilled workers.

“There are [personnel] shortages and firms like Spark are having to do something different to attract talent.

“Young people these days don’t have to work in Auckland or in New Zealand, there’s a lot of choice, and what’s going to make a difference is being able to pay more.”

Barnett said in return for attrac-

tive packages like Spark is offering, companies would expect “capability and commitment” from the employees.

He expected other companies to quickly follow suit, but warned it could have an inflation effect within the organisation.

“Most companies will look at this and see that if they’re going to be in the race for talent they’re going to have to come up with a package like [Spark’s].”

Vodafone, Spark’s biggest competitor in the telco sector, offered staff “both fixed and flexible” benefits including fully subsidised insurance and Vodafone products and services.

Last year the company introduced a new parental leave policy, which includes six months’ return to work for 30 hours per week, on a 40 hour per week salary.

“We are very proud of the range of benefits we offer our people,” a spokeswoman said.

“Annually we benchmark ourselves against the market to ensure we remain competitive both in remuneration and benefits.”

Rubbish trucks, buses targeted Kiwi-born tech pioneer Ian Wright has a simple vision: he wants to rid garbage trucks of diesel motors within five years.

Wright is the founder of Wrightspeed Inc, a manufacturer of range-extended electric vehicle powertrains, which has a $US43 million deal with Infratil-owned NZ Bus to retrofit existing and new buses with its electric powertrains to replace conventional piston engine and transmission systems.

The NZ deal is California-based Wrightspeed’s first expansion into mass transit beyond its main focus on garbage and delivery applications. The first retro-fitted buses should be on the road by Christmas and 60 trolley buses, which had been doomed to be

taken out of service, will be converted by mid-next year.

Wrightspeed was chosen in June by the World Economic Forum as one of the world’s 30 most promising technology pioneers. Wright gave a TED talk in Christchurch late last year entitled “How jet-powered garbage trucks can save the world” and is also a key speaker at this year’s Morgo conference for entrepreneurs being held in Queenstown next month.

When Wright spoke at Morgo three years ago he was celebrating the first successful trial with US delivery company FedEx of his disruptive automotive technology.

Wrightspeed is now moving into full-scale production though

is not yet profitable, with orders for FedEx, NZ Bus, and The Ratto Group, a big Californian garbage and recycling company.

The 80-year Italian founder of the family-owned group read about the FedEx trials and thought his company could save money by Wrightspeed adapting the powertrains for its fuelguzzling fleet of garbage trucks, Wright said.

The Route powertrain was showcased in June at the Waste Expo in Las Vegas in Mack Trucks, one of North America’s largest manufacturers of heavy-duty garbage trucks. Wright’s hopeful of signing a deal shortly with Mack to include powertrains in its manufacturing process.

Sticking by its runway extension experts Wellington International Airport is sticking by its experts’ opinion on the potential demand for long-haul travel to and from the capital city and says a submission against a proposed runway extension prepared for airlines opposed to the initiative has flaws of its own.

WIAL has used international aviation consultancy InterVISTAS to support its claim that commercially viable long haul flights would emerge from Asia and the American west coast if the city’s runway were longer, while the Board of Airline Representatives in New Zealand – an airline lobby group – yesterday released analy-

sis from a rival firm, Ailevon Pacific Aviation Consulting, claiming the airport runway extension plans are “implausible at best”.

Almost every airline operating to and from New Zealand is opposed to the proposed $300 million, 350-metre runway extension, which the airport’s 66 per cent owner, NZX-listed Infratil, wants to see funded mostly from central and local government funds on the basis the runway would not make money for the airport, but would be an economic booster for the region.

The national carrier, Air New Zealand, is particularly opposed as it structures its long-haul in-

ternational routes through Auckland.

The Wellington City Council owns the remaining third of WIAL and is supporting the application for a resource consent to extend the runway, submissions for which closed last Friday.

Much of the BARNZ report’s analysis rested on a markedly different view about the distances being travelled by passengers to and from Wellington. Its analysis suggested much higher numbers of short-haul trips to Australia and the Pacific Islands, both of which are serviced with the existing Wellington runway, than InterVISTAS found.

Synlait making more of milk

Synlait Milk is predicting a $24 million hike in earnings for the 2016 year to the $34-$35 million mark on the back of strong growth in the infant formula market.

The Dunsandel-based milk processor forecast an underlying net profit after tax of $32-$33m for the year ending July 31, up on last year’s $10.6m and underlying net profit of $12.2m.

Managing director and chief execu-

tive John Penno (below left) said sales of canned infant formula products underpinned the improved forecast, with a near four-fold increase in canning volumes from 4300 tonnes in 2015 to 16,000 tonnes in the 2016 financial year.

“Canned infant formula volumes have grown steadily since we commissioned our consumer packaging facility in 2015,” Penno said in a statement.

“These value added products generate stronger margins than commodity products, improving our product mix and spurring an overall higher gross profit per metric tonne.”

Chairman Graeme Milne said the completion of the company’s IPO (initial public offering) growth projects had assisted the company in keeping pace with growth and customer demand. “Our ability to meet this demand has driven our 2016 earnings forecast,” Milne said.

Operating cashflows for 2016 will be approximately $100 million compared to $16.3 million in the 2015 financial year, he said.

Synlait’s gross profit per metric tonne is estimated to be $880m per tonne, compared with $593m per tonne in 2015.

The company will release its annual results on September 19.

Gallagher: It was the right decision

A Mid Canterbury farmer opposed to the Silver Fern Farms partnership deal with Chinese company Shanghai Maling believes it was the right decision to push for a second referendum.

On Friday farmer shareholders turned out in support of the $261 million deal to sell 50 per cent of the country’s largest meat processor to the Chinese company with 80.4 per cent voting in favour.

The deal was ticked off in October last year by an overwhelming majority of shareholders. The decision went to the ballot again on Friday, in a move driven by a ginger group led by Mt Somers farmer Blair Gallagher and Rakaia Gorge runholder John Shrimpton. SFF management accused the group of negativity.

“Our reasons for this have been well documented, but in reality, and even voting on a higher threshold vote of a special resolution, shareholders have given up control of their co-op, and voted in favour of the proposal put in front of them,” Gallagher said “Even though SFF have said our requisition has been negative, time-wasting and disruptive to the whole process, there has been no acknowledgement nor likely to be, of the passion all requisitionists have for their company, its brand and Pastures to Plate strategy.

Hopefully we can all move forward from here and the board can deliver on its promises made to shareholders. Ultimately this decision will change the future direction of our whole industry.”

Shrimpton also conceded defeat after a six-month campaign, shaking SFF chairman Rob Hewett’s hand after the vote.

Large amount of feed grains still on farm

Much of the 2016 feed grain harvest remains unsold signalling further changes for Mid Canterbury arable farmers’ business models.

According to the latest Arable Industry Marketing Initiative (AIMI) report the volume of unsold feed wheat was sitting at 101,800 tonnes on July 1, equating to 30 per cent of the harvest, significantly more than the 37,000t unsold at the same time last year.

However, 53,400t of feed wheat was sold between April 1 and July 1 lightening the burden by 34 per cent, compared to 11,400t decrease in unsold grain during the same period last season.

The estimated tonnage of feed barley was down 22 per cent on last year to 282,300t of which 71 per cent (199,600t) has been sold.

The amount of unsold barley is also up on last year at 82,600t compared to 64,500.

However almost 30 per cent (82,600t) of the feed grain harvest remains unsold.

The falling demand and value of feed grains has been attributed to the dairy downturn. The report also indicated a significant drop in planting plans – at this point down 41 per cent on last season in line with a trend showing up over the past two years.

bury arable sector spokesperson Joanne Burke predicted a swing back to the more traditional model of arable farming, involving prime stock fattening and increased plantings of ryegrass and

small seed crops.

Only a handful of autumn/winter cereal crops were planted this year.

The estimated final total tonnage of milling wheat at 113,400t

was up 30 per cent compared to last year’s harvest.

While 90 per cent of the milling wheat harvest was sold, twothirds of the sold grain was still stored on farms.

Wool company anticipates strong maiden profit Wools of New Zealand (WNZ) is making strong commercial progress with an expected maiden profit for the 2016 financial year, company chairman Mark Shadbolt says.

He was responding to a recent shareholder comment in a rural newspaper that the company would “almost certainly fail” without support from the Wool Market Development Commitment (WMDC).

“To the contrary, WNZ is making investments that are reducing the company’s reliance on the WMDC,” he said.

For the year ended June 30, 2016, WNZ expects a maiden operating profit of more than $600,000 and a net after-tax profit of more than $1.1 million.

WNZ’s grower shareholders committed to pay the WMDC out of their clip when they funded the company in a capital-raise in 2012/13.

“We’ve always known and planned for the WMDC to conclude in June 2018 and thereafter for the business to be in a position to be self-supporting and profitable,” Shadbolt said.

Initially, WNZ was totally reliant on WMDC. However, over time WNZ’s reliance on

the WMDC had been steadily decreased as WNZ developed other revenue streams, Shadbolt said.

In 2013/14, the WMDC was $2.2m representing 20 per cent of gross revenue. For 2015/16 the expected WMDC would be $2.6m representing less than 8 per cent of expected total revenue.

WNZ expected its revenues would continue to increase due to ongoing increased commercial activity. The WMDC would increase in dollar terms through to 2018 but continue to decrease as a percentage of WNZ’s total gross revenue.

Shadbolt said it is regrettable the shareholder called for the Financial Markets Authority to “look at WNZ performance versus prospectus and call the directors to account.”

“The company’s performance met its prospectus targets to the 2014 financial year and there were no prospectus-related commitments after that year,” he said.

“As a grower I am bitterly disappointed with the ongoing destructive behaviour of individuals and entities who would rather see the ongoing exodus of growers rather than a thriving and prosperous sheep industry.”

The snow has been followed by a string of heavy frosts, lowering grass growth rates.

While some rain did fall last week it did little for the soil moisture recharge.

Lake Opuha Irrigation scheme has welcomed the snow as the hill cover will create the reserves to fill the storage scheme once the thaw begins.

Calving conditions are good for survival and pens are filling with newborns heralding the start of a new season. The few early sales indicate demand for good quality bobby calves.

More indications are being seen that the market has turned, with the futures market showing rising whole milk powder prices, amid falling milk flows both here and in Europe.

Analysts are picking another improving global trade auction this week and if this momentum can be maintained, payout prediction could rise later in the season.

Landcorp, the nation’s biggest dairy farmer has decided to stop using palm kernel on its farms, citing sustainability concerns and a change back to a lower cost pasture system.

And Synlait are forecasting a big lift in profit for last year (in the $34-$35million range) as the investment into higher value products like canned infant formula, has paid huge dividends for this Rakaia based company.

Lamb The lamb schedules lifted again this week, as the markets compete strongly for the low volumes of product, especially chilled supplies.

Post Brexit blues are passing and processors report few concerns supplying the initial UK Christmas chilled market.

Demand for both lamb and sheep meats is building on the back of low inventories in all markets. Processors are cautiously positive for the oncoming season.

They will however, be very concerned about the Beef and Lamb NZ annual stock survey, which shows sheep numbers falling to their lowest level since 1943, to now sit at 28.3m, and more plant rationalisation could still be needed.

Silver Fern Farms again received strong backing from its shareholders in the partnership deal with Shanghai Maling, at the special general meeting called by a small group calling for the abandonment of the deal.

This should clear the way for the new debt free company, with only OIO approval to be achieved by the September 30 deadline.

The continuing dry has seen some North Canterbury farmers sell, instead of graze again, as the financial plight of those facing another tough year, worsens.

Wool This week’s North Island wool sale was the first for three weeks, and the bigger offering saw the market move sideways with the lack of solid buying from China being a concern.

The currency had lifted on the OCR announcement, but pleasingly crossbred indicators changed little from last week’s southern sale.

The former chief executive of Wools of NZ called for a merger between that company and Merino NZ as he voiced future financial concerns, but the chair Mark Shadbolt responded by stating it will declare a first net profit next month.

Beef Stable beef schedules this week, as the US markets stall and await the entry of Brazilian beef into that market.

Local trade schedules are steadily lifting on the back of short supply and saleyard prime steers have broken through the $3/kg lwt barrier.

The beef herd has increased to 3.7m as a result of the strong prices, and in the US, product must now be labelled GM or GE, and some believe this is an opportunity for NZ to promote its GM free status.

Why do we collect things?

M

useums do many things – and amongst the things they do, collecting is central. Yet it’s not just museums that collect. Many people do.

Estimates range from 30-70 per cent of us being collectors, yet it’s possible that collecting is an almost universal passion.

What makes a collection?

While some may think a collection needs to contain unusual or special items, to follow a theme, or to be a representative selection; in many ways what makes a group of items a collection is simply whatever the collector determines. A small collection of mismatched buttons kept tucked away in a drawer can be just as much a collection as a hangar full of airplanes all carefully catalogued by their owner.

Some collectors spend considerable time seeking out items, filling gaps in their collection, as well as organising, cataloguing, caring for and displaying items.

Others are just as satisfied knowing a haphazard box of photographs contains the nucleus of their family history collection.

Many people like to set out purposefully to acquire or develop a collection, for others a collection seems to creep up on them unawares – one day it’s a few stones on a shelf, the next day they realise they’ve been an unwitting collector of heart-shaped stones.

Whether the collection continues to develop in a proactive way or is enjoyed for the point that it has reached, can be equally absorbing.

Heart-shaped collections To set out looking for heartshaped stones could turn out to be a discouraging way to spend a day – especially if every good stone seen seems to have other attributes and is equally attractive. But a heart-shaped stone collection could also become a collection of anything heart shaped, or even any shaped stone. And so, collections grow and change and become distinctive for their merits however idiosyncratic they may at first seem.

For others, specially made collectibles are the key. Children’s collectible card games can be hugely popular in a sudden craze – and incidentally, can be equally popular with adults, who often preserve these collector sets in pristine condition for the long term.

Collectible plates or teaspoons designed with themes and special display apparatus take much longer to accumulate. Purchased by mail order, they arrive piece by piece at regular intervals.

For the virtual collector, it may be wins in a game, weapons or costumes for their avatar, or Pokemon GO discoveries that are a joy to accumulate. Let alone the virtual scrapbookers on sites such as Pinterest who amass vast collections of online resources and inspiring images.

many collections within it. Part of our job is to make the hard decisions about the kinds of things that this museum should collect on behalf of its community – after all we can’t collect everything that exists or we would very soon run out of room for storage.

Museums also need to think about other factors, such as whether the items offered are in good condition – could their condition cause other items to deteriorate for example? Is there enough space and a suitable means to care for the objects?

Trains and planes are out of the question for us, as the museum could neither manage the space they require nor mitigate potential problems such as oil spills.

Locally, other museums already serve to build those collections, so there’s no need to double up on what is being collected.

Museums must also take care to use the space, time and resources they have wisely. It’s therefore not appropriate for Ashburton Museum to have a large collection of very similar or duplicate items, when one example could tell a story equally well.

Our aim is not to be an encyclopaedic collection, aiming to keep one (or more) of every example and variation in existence. We also focus on our local area – defined as the Ashburton District.

What were the interests, passions and occupations of the people who have and do live here? What shapes this region? And what makes it distinctive? Answering such questions helps museums ensure they reflect the communities they serve.

Modern and new collectors Of course private collectors have similar problems. The jar fills with buttons, the garage needs extending. What to do when a friend kindly offers a collection item you’ve already got?

The joy of being an individual collector is that you get to decide – or discover – just what your collecting entails. All collections are best when they grow, change, adapt and continue to reflect the interests and passions of those they represent.

Ashburton College Y10A were crowned New World Senior Netball champions following a 29-20 victory over Hampstead B at the EA Networks Centre Stadium on Saturday.

College led throughout in a highly competitive clash and coach Sarah Lassen praised her title-winning players for their determined performances throughout the season.

“They’ve been extremely dedicated and pushed themselves all the way,” she said.

“They’ve done really well.”

Meanwhile, Hampstead took the spoils in the senior reserve final with a 24-22 victory over Methven.

Back-to-back gold By ossian shine For Andy Murray, there have been highs.

Then there was this.

On a small, green patch of scorched acrylic some 9000 kilometres from home, the Scot achieved a unique Olympic feat, converting heart and guts and sweat into Rio gold.

With victory over Juan Martin del Potro, the 29-year-old claimed a status unmatched by any of those peers with whom he is often less than favourably compared – two Olympics singles crowns.

Forget the five Australian Open runners-up finishes and the French Open final defeat.

Forget that his three grand slam titles is 14 shy of Roger Federer’s record haul, or 11 short of Pete Sampras and Rafa Nadal.

No matter that among the ‘Big Four’ Federer, Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Murray, the Scot is the only one not to have completed the full collection of grand slam crowns.

Now he has eclipsed them, though the man himself would never be so immodest.

“I don’t think I would say that,” he smiled.

But still, no other tennis player, man or woman, has defended an Olympic singles crown.

And now Murray has two Olympic golds.

He did it with a typically dynamic display of baseline tennis seasoned with smart forays to the net, pinpoint serving when it mattered, and ironman fitness.

Del Potro, conqueror of both Djokovic and Nadal in Rio, at 1.98m was somehow a fitting giant to fell.

Cycling high performance boss Mark Elliott has ripped into Dylan Kennett, claiming he gave up in the omnium elimination race in Rio. Elliott said Kennett had not shown the stuff of a champion by failing to respond well after striking bad luck involving the final lap bell in the scratch race.

The 21-year-old Kennett, from South Canterbury, was part of the world championship pursuit gold medal team last year, and was in the team beaten for bronze by Denmark in Rio. He was one of the first riders knocked out of the elimination race in the omnium, and sits 10th overall at the halfway stage.

Elliott told Radio Sport’s Brenton Vannisselroy: “Dylan’s got to learn how to be a champion and it’s not by giving up.

“He’s was no doubt caught out in that first scratch race.

“When you’ve got Mark Cavendish right beside you and both going hard, they both heard the bell and went for it.

“It was just unfortunate ... he would have been sitting fifth. He had a great IP (individual pursuit).

“I think we’ve just seen someone who hasn’t been able to focus for the elimination and do what he is really capable ... he’ll go back tonight with a collection of thoughts.”

Elliott said the judges had made a “common sense call” after the scratch race confusion which cost Kennett a high placing.

Kennett complained afterwards that the judging stuff-up could cost him a medal.

“I’m trying to make up ground and it’s going to be pretty hard to come back and look at the gold medal now, so the best thing I can target now is just a medal.

“It’s going to be hard,” Kennett told Sky TV. Elliott said: “If he shows true potential tomorrow he can win the flying lap and kilo – he has the ability to do that, but he’s got to go and want to do it.

“The points race is going to be tough. He can put himself up there, and should be striving for a top five.

“A good elimination and he could have been striving for a medal.

“You’ve got to learn how to be a champion and that’s not by giving up ... champions have got to want it.”

Elliott saved special praise for sprinter Natasha Hansen, who raced again early this morning seeking to make the finals.

“We can’t ask any more of our team sprint guys, superb ... the girls rode a fantastic pursuit, a national record. Some of our crowd have (excelled) and some haven’t.

“It’s pretty clear Natasha is delivering - that’s a national record from her. That’s what we’re looking for. So good on her.” - NZME

Heartbreak on the turf Two German goals in the last minute, including one with time all but up, has ended the Black Sticks men’s hopes of a hockey medal at the Rio Olympics.

Florian Fuchs slid in the winner in the last few seconds to claim a 3-2 win for Germany after New Zealand had led 2-0.

Hugo Inglis had opened the scoring for New Zealand before Shea McAleese had doubled the lead from a penalty corner.

But German captain Moritz Furste scored twice from penalty corners, with the second coming in the final minute, to set up the dramatic climax.

It was a heartbreaking ending for the Black Sticks who had displayed stoic defence to thwart the world No.3 until Furste finally found a way through with less than five minutes left after they had replaced their goalkeeper with an outfield player in a bid to find a way back into the match.

“You can’t take the four or five minutes at the end back but I’d certainly love to, if you could,” said a devastated Black Sticks skipper Simon Child.

“We played so well for such a long part of the game and then just got down to the last four or five minutes and the Germans showed why they’re the twotime Olympic champs.

“They make every second count.”

Statistics New Zealand has released data that showed the Kiwis at the top of the medals per capital table if you count all medals. 400 record smashed As the world waited to watch Usain Bolt, a young man stunned the world, smashing one of athletics’ most famous records.

South African 24-year-old Wayde van Niekerk stormed home off the final corner to streak to 400m gold in the Rio final in a world record of 43.03 seconds. His time was 0.15sec quicker than the longstanding mark of Olympic legend Michael Johnson, whose previous world best came in Seville in 1999.

The Kiwi crew picked up their second disqualification of the regatta today, after being flagged for a UFD – being over the startline early – in their opening race yesterday. The pair went on to win the race, but their efforts were in vain, with the UFD meaning they carry the maximum 21 points. The result saw Aleh and Powrie slip down to seventh and lose further ground on the leaders, all but ending their chance of defending their Olympic crown.

Meech a medal chance Sam Meech has an opportunity to snare New Zealand’s first sailing medal of the Rio Games when he contests the decider in the Laser class this morning. Meech, competing at this first Olympics, is ranked third heading into the medal race, which is contested by the top-10 ranked sailors in the fleet. The sailors all carry their points tally from the 10 qualifying races through to the decider, but the medal race will carry double points.

Guineas litmus test for colt Manhattan Street is in line for a trip to Australia, but all will be revealed after the unbeaten youngster’s next appearance.

The well-related colt has made the perfect start to his career and his performance in the Listed H. S. Dyke Wanganui Guineas on September 3 will determine whether he heads across the Tasman.

“He will run at Wanganui and we will go from there,” trainer Lisa Latta said.

“Melbourne is an option with him and we would be looking at races leading into the Victoria Derby, but we want get the Wanganui Guineas out of the way first.”

The domestic options open to the connections of Manhattan Street include a path toward the Gr.1 Sothys New Zealand 2000 Guineas at Riccarton on November 5.

“The New Zealand Derby is worth a lot of money as well,” Latta said.

While Manhattan Street is out of a sister to the champion sprinter Lankan Rupee, Latta believes he will be much more of a force over middle distances.

“He’s a real staying type of colt and a horse who I’m confident is going to get out over more ground later on,” she said.

A son of Cox Plate runner-up Manhattan Rain, Manhattan Street won all three starts last season on heavy tracks, but Latta is confident he will act on top of the ground. - NZME

Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury and Canterbury’s primary and under-15 representative teams produced a high level of hockey at the girls’ mini-tourna-

ment in Ashburton on Sunday.

The tournament served as the perfect pre-tournament hit-out for the primary teams ahead of the Robertson Trophy next weekend.

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has responded to Steve Hansen’s latest barbs with a measured response yesterday, saying he isn’t sure what his All Blacks counterpart is “upset” about.

The tension between the pair has been simmering since June when Hansen suggested Cheika was happy to be bullied by Eddie Jones during England’s whitewash of the Wallabies in Australia.

Hansen continued the verbal sparring on arrival in Sydney yesterday for Saturday’s Bledisloe Cup test, responding to Cheika’s suggestion the All Blacks would have tough decisions to make about the selections of openside flanker and first-five – given the form of Ardie Savea and Beauden Barrett – by saying Cheika had “enough problems of his own” ahead of the match.

It was a disappointing weekend for the southerners at the annual North Island versus South Island indoor bowls test match in Christchurch on Saturday after falling to a 31-17 defeat.

Since 1980, each island has toured the other’s districts in alternate years and concluded with a North v South fixture.

The one-sided overall result keeps the Kevin Eddy Memorial Trophy in the North Island for a 13th successive year.

For the first time, four Ashburton bowlers – Simon Thomas, Michael Lawson, Grant Wilson and Matt Markham – were part of the South Island team.

The highlights of the test for the south were the ladies and men’s fours, the latter of which was made up largely of local players.

Azhar smashed Moeen for a huge six to take Pakistan to 0-42 and clinch victory, punching the air in delight before leaving the field with Aslam to warm applause from the sun-baked crowd.

“You expect to win your home series, but Pakistan showed their class – we knew Younus was going to get us eventually as you don’t average 50 in more than 100 tests if you’re not a class player,” England captain Alastair Cook said, referring to the innings of 218 by Younus Khan which set up Pakistan’s victory.

Pakistan won the first Test at Lord’s and England were victorious in Manchester and Birmingham.

Sport Golden hat-trick Simone Biles’ golden run in Rio is picking up steam. So, surprisingly, is Great Britain’s. Biles added a third gold medal to her rapidly rising haul on Sunday, easily capturing the women’s vault final. The 19-year-old helped the “Final Five” to team gold and also dominated the all-around competition last week, averaged 15.966 on her two vaults on Sunday to become the first American woman to win the event at the Olympics.

Lightning strikes thrice If there were any doubts, it took less than 10 seconds – 9.81, to be exact – for Usain Bolt to erase them.

He is the Olympic champion once again.

On a muggy Sunday night in Rio, the Jamaican superstar won the signature event in track and field in a runaway and added this line to his already gleaming resume: first person to capture three straight 100-metre titles at the Olympics.

Bolt beat American Justin Gatlin, who fans greeted with raucous boos, by .08 seconds.

Andre de Grasse of Canada won the bronze.

He shoved Michael Phelps aside to take centre stage for Week 2 of these troubled Rio Games.

He pushed his total to seven Olympic gold medals, with a chance for two more – in the 200 and 4x100 relay – later in the week.

Bolt wasn’t the only one putting on a show.

A few minutes earlier, South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk eclipsed what many thought was the most-unbreakable record in the book – Michael Johnson’s 17-year-old mark of 43.18 seconds in 400 metres.

Running out of Lane 8, where the lag puts him well in front of the rest of the field, van Niekerk never saw a soul – crossing in 43.03 and only glancing to his left when he approached the line to peer at the clock, which showed him what he had done.

“Usain Bolt will be retiring soon, but this could be the next star of the sport,” Johnson said during his commentary on BBC. The current star?

gradually build up speed.

He caught Gatlin with about 40 metres left and was celebrating – pointing at his chest with his thumb – before he crossed the finish line.

After he crossed, Bolt raised the index finger, and then, the real party began.

A few minutes after the finish, Bolt was unlacing those nowfamous gold spikes and taking selfies with the fans and the medallists from the heptathlon.

He turned his yellow hat backward, kneeled down and gave the crowd what it really wanted.

It’s that famous, arching, “To the World” pose that he debuted eight years ago in Beijing.

Chants of “Bolt, Bolt, Bolt” rang out from the near-capacity stadium. Yes, the show lived up to its billing.

But this was not Bolt at his fastest.

Four years ago, all three medallists broke 9.8.

Nobody did this time.

It was not Bolt at his best.

Some might argue his gutsy effort at last year’s world championships, when he overcame a season’s worth of injuries to beat Gatlin by .01, might have been the grittiest race he won.

But it certainly was Bolt at his most entertaining.

It was a show from the time he came onto the track, arms to his side, asking for more applause, until 20 minutes after the race, when he was still working the crowd, posing for photos, making the troubled world of track feel fun again.

He turns 30 the day of the closing ceremony and has insisted his Olympic days are over.

“A true, true warrior of the sport,” said Yohan Blake, the Jamaican who used to be his main rival. “To come back ... and win it three times.

“He is a one-of-a-kind sprinter. He really is.”

Love is in the air at the Olympic diving pool. He Zi of China received a silver medal in women’s 3-metre springboard before accepting something else – an engagement ring. He’s boyfriend and fellow diver Qin Kai surprised her with a marriage proposal as she stepped off the medal podium. A serious-looking Qin got down on bended knee and appeared to speak at length to He before opening a small box. The crowd cheered its approval, while the other divers stopped what they were doing and watched in amazement.

Folau AB’s top threat Israel Folau, the Wallabies’ one strike weapon who was a constant threat in the Rugby World Cup final despite being hampered by an ankle injury, is likely to come in for special attention from the All Blacks on Saturday.

Their plans will centre on how best to limit the damage Folau provides on attack with his ability to break tackles either by brute force or speed. And his skill under the high ball means the All Blacks’ kicking game in Sydney has to be on target or they could be on the receiving end of a counter-attack.
