Booze-fuelled violence spree A young man who assaulted five people in a series of alcohol-fuelled attacks in the Ashburton CDB has been warned all sentencing options are on the table when he next returns to court. Verokia Akama appeared in the Timaru District Court yesterday, where he admitted three counts of injuring with intent and one of wounding with intent. He was jointly charged with causing
grievous bodily harm with intent. The 20-year-old was drinking alcohol with associates at an Ashburton address before he and three others headed into town, arriving shortly before 1am on February 1 last year. On entering a local nightclub, Akama spotted a work colleague who he promptly punched to the ground. While lying unconscious on the floor Akama
kicked him in the face several times. Akama’s second victim paused to look at the unconscious man and was hit in the jaw. He was also left lying on the floor.
