On Monday they were standing in puddles, huddled under umbrellas, but in less than two years the Scenic Circles and Eastfield team will be standing in a new, 75-room, four-storey hotel. In May Eastfield chairman Brian Davidson confirmed that a hotel would be built on the Eastfield site and on Monday the project’s working team were on site, checking details and talking high level plans.
Among the project team was Scenic Hotel Group owner Lani Hagaman and while she and her late husband Earl owned a string of hotels, the opportunity to be part of a new build was always exciting, she said. The first time on site with people from the various parts of the project was always a good moment. It was a time where ideas and concepts were shared, Hagaman said. “It’s a time where you work out how the various concepts will hold hands so
you can go forward together. It’s a thinkfest, how we can make the different things happen.” The hotel’s bar and restaurant will link to the community green space that will be at the heart of Eastfields. Hagaman’s company does not build ‘cookie cutter’ hotels, and Scenic Hotel Ashburton will be unique; it will reflect the district.
