On Monday they were standing in puddles, huddled under umbrellas, but in less than two years the Scenic Circles and Eastfield team will be standing in a new, 75-room, four-storey hotel.

In May Eastfield chairman Brian Davidson confirmed that a hotel would be built on the Eastfield site and on Monday the project’s working team were on site, checking details and talking high level plans.

Among the project team was Scenic Hotel Group owner Lani Hagaman and while she and her late husband Earl owned a string of hotels, the opportunity to be part of a new build was always exciting, she said.

The first time on site with people from the various parts of the project was always a good moment. It was a time where ideas and concepts were shared, Hagaman said.

“It’s a time where you work out how the various concepts will hold hands so

you can go forward together. It’s a thinkfest, how we can make the different things happen.”

The hotel’s bar and restaurant will link to the community green space that will be at the heart of Eastfields.

Hagaman’s company does not build ‘cookie cutter’ hotels, and Scenic Hotel Ashburton will be unique; it will reflect the district.

“We don’t have box hotels; the regional flavour is really important for us. It’s important to get community buy in, to take the community with us.”

This will be the first she has developed since the death of husband Earl in May. He visited the site before his death and was inspired by moving into the regions again, she said.

“He was a forward thinking, big picture man, but not a lot of the big players understand the regions as he did.”

One of the huge bonuses of the site was the ability to develop a hotel that was not rigidly tied into site boundaries; the site was unique in that it was open space and the area could be rejigged if needed, she said.

She says adding 75 hotel rooms to Ashburton’s accommodation mix is a positive for the district.

“We’re not competition. We

have 37 years in the industry and we wouldn’t be coming into something we didn’t believe in.”

From the outset the Scenic team will be heavily involved in the project, from a high presence on site during the build, through to employing staff when the project was completed. As a brand Scenic is a big player in the conference market and this would have significant benefit for Ashburton, Hagaman said.

The hotel is planned to open in May, 2019, and once construction starts Scenic will be marketing it as part of its conference package.

Her marketing team will be spending time in the district becoming familiar with facilities and attractions that can be used as part of their marketing strategy.

“The last thing you do when you open a hotel is just open the doors and hope that everyone will arrive.”

The project team intends to stay local as much as possible on the hotel’s construction, fit out and supply network.

Mt Hutt reaching saturation point

Mt Hutt Skifield management will have their fingers crossed for the remainder of this week, but incredibly, not for more snow.

Instead, the perennial snow dreamers will be asking for some pristine conditions this weekend so revellers can enjoy the fruits of yet another large dumping of snow earlier this week and to celebrate one of the mountain’s deepest bases of the white stuff in the past decade.

“It’s an odd thing to ask for considering we are normally begging for the opposite, but some good weather would be great,” ski area general operations manager, James Urquhart said.

“It feels wrong, but we’ve got that much up there we are having to push it off the sides.

“In small accumulations, it’s fine. It’s when we get those really big amounts, of like a metre, that it can become a bit more logistical and take a bit more work to get sorted.”

The weather gods don’t look likely to shine down on the Mt Hutt crew though with some more wintry weather set to arrive in the region on the weekend. Large amounts of rainfall are predicted on the Canterbury Plains and another decent wallop of snow is on the radar for Mt Hutt.

Urquhart said that getting the mountain open and ready for users yesterday morning was a big operation to undertake.

Retailers join forces against shoplifting

Retailers from across the Ashburton District will come together next week in an effort to further enhance defences when it comes to shoplifting.

Safer Ashburton is hosting an information evening on Monday night after a number of concerns were raised to them about an increase in hot hands within stores around the Ashburton District in recent times, including a recent planned attack from a Christchurch group which was stopped by police.

Safer Ashburton manager, Kevin Clifford, said new systems on how retailers were alerted to shoplifters would be high on the agenda for the evening.

“The plan is to cover off as much as we can,” he said.

“But looking at a system in which others can be alerted to shoplifters who may be in the area is something we are keen to explore and discuss during the evening.”

Clifford recalled a system being in place a number of years ago, using phone and fax but said the advancement in technology these days would see a far more enhanced and strong system potentially introduced.

“There are a number of option available out there now and it could be something as simple as an app which retailers could have on their phones.

“But it will all be up for discussion on the night.”

Kevin Clifford The evening will also be attended by police who intend to make a presentation around shoplifting through the specialist shoplifting unit from Christchurch.

The plan is for everyone to come together and discuss things such as rights and what to do and what not to do as well as looking at reducing the chance of offending and ways of apprehension.

“We would welcome anyone who is a retailer from the Ashburton District, including areas such as Methven, Rakaia and Hinds to come along and be a part of the discussions.”

A number of Ashburton District councillors were out and about in Ashburton yesterday delivering information on the evening to retailers.

The night is being held on August 21 at 7.30pm at the Ashburton MSA with a light supper provided.

Resilience is not about ‘hardening up’, farmer says

Charismatic farmer and mental health advocate Doug Avery is on the road with his new book and will be in Ashburton on Friday night.

The Resilient Farmer tells Avery’s story of how he weathered years of drought, desperation and depression to turn his farm and his life around.

It’s a Kiwi can-do story of how he overcame adversity to live a fruitful life and help others.

Avery said although the book is based around farming, his message is relevant to men and women of all ages, and from all walks

of life, in terms of how better to manage our mindset.

“There’s a huge difference between a broken leg and a broken mind. A broken leg is obvious to everyone, whereas a broken mind is invisible and can represent such a lonely journey – but I realised it doesn’t need to be if the safety net is in place.

“The saddest part of it all is that anyone suffering from depression will become the master of disguise and hide it – which I did.”

Avery said one of the biggest things he learned in dealing with depression was how to grow his emotional intelligence.

He said while the book refers to

“It’s more about letting the sun in to soften your heart.

“You need to be able to be in a position where you can sit down and park stuff up until you can gather your thoughts, rather than just exploding out into the world.

“It’s not political and it doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor. It’s about managing those trips as they come up.”

Celebrating the textile arts

Ashburton Creative Fibre took over the Tinwald War Memorial Hall on Monday in a colourful celebration of the textile arts.

The biennial Ashburton Creative Fibre Open Day brought together a rich assortment of spinning, weaving, knitting, dying, flaxwork, felt and crochet under the theme “junk to funk”.

Visitors were invited to try their hand at various textile crafts, connect with artists across the district and purchase locally-made goods and materials.

Event organiser Margaret Williamson said the day had taken a lot of organisation but successfully attracted fans, artists and guilds from all over.

“We’ve got people here from North Canterbury right down to Otago,” she said.

Among exhibitors was “wearable waste” winner Judith Edgar with her dresses made of work socks, electric blankets, plastic milk containers and wool packs.

Shona Schofield of Felt and Fibre demonstrated drum carding with a fusion engine, which she said is a way to “blend beautiful colours” and different fibre types.

Another knitted creation by Williamson replicated the Christchurch cathedral in 3D. Judges were at work assessing the best creation under the junk to funk theme.

Williamson said that Ashburton Creative Fibre is now in their fifth decade of operation, and have expanded in both the range of textile arts encompassed and the size of their open days.

“Some people in this room are just so talented, there’s some really wonderful work here.”

Two Ashburton businesses pitched in to support SPCA Cupcake Day on Monday.

Natasha Rhodes of Sugar Rush baked and sold animal-themed cupcakes of unicorn, whale, clownfish and puppy varieties, while Karen Keene of Keene On Photog-

raphy offered pet photography sessions.

Funds from both projects were donated to helping injured, abused and neglected animals across New Zealand.

The spectacular cupcakes proved popular and Rhodes said she enjoyed baking them.

Senior Ashburton College students perused nearby jobs, opportunities and future pathways at a bustling Local Employers Career Expo yesterday.

Representatives from an assortment of local businesses and higher education options set up in the

college gymnasium and chatted to students about what they could offer.

Careers counsellor Teri Nichol said it was a good follow-up to an expo held earlier in the year.

The stalls ranged from Ara Institute of Canterbury to New World, University of Canterbury to Ashburton Contracting, and more.

Ashburton’s own version of the hugely popular, long-running, television show, It’s in the Bag will roll into town this weekend.

The fundraising event, hosted by the St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, will be held Saturday afternoon at 2pm under the guise of It’s in the Box. Local identity Bernard Egan will play the role of Selwyn Toogood and will be ably assisted

by Marilyn Cross.

Held successfully two years ago, the event has made its return and organisers have been busy this week making sure all is ready for the occasion.

Church convener, Maureen Maginness, said planning for Saturday was coming along nicely.

“Everything is slowly falling into place,” she said.

“We have some wonderful prizes up for grabs through some generous donations.”

Fundraising concert entertains

The MSA Men’s Choir joined forces with the Fascinating Ladies choir to delight the ears and deliver fantastic entertainment to musos in Methven on Friday night.

The collaborative Variety Concert was organised as a fundraiser for the Methven Care Trust and took place at the Mount Hutt Memorial Hall.

Fascinating Ladies choir leader Kate Lambarth said organisers were thrilled to see a “really good turnout.”

Through the sales of about 230 tickets

and the raffling off of gift baskets, they collected a total of $3700 for Methven Care Trust.

“We sold all the raffle tickets we had,” said Lambarth.

The money will be put towards the development of a new aged care facility in Methven.

The two choirs performed separately and then combined for three final “classics”, with the vocal power of more than 45 singers on stage.

“It’s the first time we’ve joined together – and hopefully it won’t be the last,” Lambarth said.

“We’d like to see them gone but we’re not going to remove the independence of the governor of the Reserve Bank.”

The Real Estate Institute last week called for first-home buyers to be removed from LVR restrictions.

REINZ chief executive Bindi Norwell said LVR restrictions and access to finance were an “intimidating barrier to entry” into the housing market for firsttime buyers.

English admitted yesterday there had been “some sort of correction” within the housing market but wouldn’t speculate on what it means going forward.

“Some real estate agents are saying because of the election that’s prolonging what would usually be a quieter winter prior and that prices might pick up after the election,” he said.

Prime Minister Bill English has asked the Reserve Bank to look at the conditions that would allow loan to value ratio restrictions to be lifted.

English said the restrictions, introduced to balance rising house prices, were only meant to be temporary and with pressure coming out of the housing market the restrictions were working.

LVR restrictions put a limit on how much a homebuyer with a deposit less than 20 per cent can borrow.

“I would expect [the Reserve Bank] is doing work on what conditions would have to be met to remove them but there’s no indication at the moment that they’re going to,” he said.

English said in meetings with the Reserve Bank he’d asked officials to look at the conditions to lift them, but wouldn’t say when he personally would like to see them gone.

“It’s a matter for the Reserve Bank. I don’t want to give the public the impression that politicians can decide to remove them,” he said.

Grandmother found guilty An Auckland grandma who angrily threw her frail grandson down a hallway so he hit his head and died has been found guilty of his murder.

Kathleen Elizabeth Cooper, 65, has been on trial in the High Court accused of assaulting her grandson in their Manurewa home after a toileting accident on December 13, 2015.

Suffering serious head injuries, twoyear-old Jermain Mason Ngawhau was rushed to Starship Hospital for emergency surgery, but died five days later.

Yesterday the jury of seven women and five men found Cooper guilty of his murder after about nine hours of deliberation.

Scientist makes new homes for baby paua Twelve bespoke concrete structures resembling upside down oven trays may hold the key to restoring the paua population off Kaikoura wiped out by last November’s earthquake.

Niwa fisheries scientist Reyn Naylor, working with the Paua Industry Council, this week began testing his ingenious design off Wellington’s south coast – they have positioned 12 structures, each with 50 juvenile paua attached, on the seabed at Flax Bay. The juvenile paua are each just 30mm long and Naylor hopes they will remain under the structures and establish themselves there.

“We will check them every day for five days, then check them once a week, then once every two weeks for two months in total.”

Naylor made the structures behind a shed at Niwa’s Greta Point site in Wellington. They are 40cm long, 30cm wide and 11cm high.

“They’re like an upside down oven tray but made of concrete.

They have lots of little doors around the outside so seaweed and other food can wash in and the paua can come and go.”

Paua like tight crevices, being in the dark and confined spaces where they can hide.

“They don’t want starfish coming in and eating them. We’re putting chicken wire over the doors

for a while to keep the predators out.”

Naylor concedes the trial may have challenges.

“I put out three structures a couple of months ago, and after six weeks I had 20 under two of them, but they were bigger to begin with. So I know these attract larger paua, but the habitat underneath these structures may not be complex enough for the little guys.”

Naylor says if the baby paua all leave and live somewhere else and survive, the structures will still provide ongoing habitat for larger juveniles and adults that can live on the outside.

If the trial succeeds, the next step is to carry out a similar pilot study off Kaikoura. If that shows similar results, 300 structures will be placed on the seabed at five different sites.

“The earthquake caused a huge loss of juvenile paua habitat and juveniles but if you just put them back without any habitat they won’t survive. This is not on a scale big enough to return the population to what it was before the earthquake, but if it works it will provide a tool to help restore the habitat.”

The work is funded by the Paua Industry Council and Seafood Innovations Ltd.

Kim steps back from war North Korean leader Kim Jong Un appeared to take a step back from the brink of nuclear war yesterday, when state media reported that he would “watch a little more the foolish and stupid conduct of the Yankees”.

But, as is often the case with North Korea, the message was mixed: Kim was inspecting the missile unit tasked with preparing to strike near Guam, and photos released by state media showed a large satellite image of Andersen Air Force Base on Guam on the screen beside the leader.

“The US should stop at once arrogant provocations against the DPRK and unilateral demands and not provoke it any longer,” the North Korean leader told his missile unit, according to a report from the state-run Korean Central News Agency.

If “the Yankees persist in their extremely dangerous reckless actions on the Korean Peninsula and in its vicinity,” Kim continued, North Korea would “make an important decision as it already declared,” he said.

Kim was visiting the Strategic Force of the Korean People’s Army, the elite missile unit that – according to state media – is finalising preparations to launch ballistic missiles into the Pacific Ocean near the American territory of Guam.

A decision was due this week, a week during which the Kim regime is celebrating the

Kim “praised the KPA Strategic Force for drawing up a close and careful plan . . . and examined the firing preparations for power demonstration,” the report said.

“He said that he wants to advise the United States, which is driving the situation on the Korean Peninsula into the touch-and-go situation, running helter-skelter, to take into full account gains and losses

with clear head whether the prevailing situation is more unfavourable for any party,” the report quoted Kim as saying.

But General Joseph Dunford, speaking in Seoul, just 50km south of the border with North Korea, stressed that diplomacy and sanctions were the first plan of attack.

“It would be a horrible thing Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said in Washington that it will be “game on” with North Ko-

rea if it hits the United States, including Guam, but he left it much more ambiguous what will happen if Pyongyang decides to shoot missiles near Guam, without attempting to hit the US island territory.

“That becomes an issue that we take up, and it’s however the president chooses,” Mattis said.

But he warned pointedly: “You don’t shoot at people in this world unless you want to bear the consequences”. - AP

New Zealand sheep numbers have been declining as farmers chased higher returns for cattle, and Beef + Lamb noted the latest survey showed continued growth in beef production as farmers move towards livestock that are less labour-intensive and currently more profitable.

The country’s beef cattle herd increased by 2.8 per cent to 3.63 million, driven by a 5 per cent lift in weaner cattle numbers to 1.15 million, reflecting the high cost of buying older cattle as replacements, and good grass availability.

Meanwhile, the size of the country’s beef breeding cow herd was unchanged at 954,000.

Meat is the country’s secondlargest export commodity behind dairy products, while wool exports are the country’s 19th most valuable commodity export.

Results from a new dedicated listings team and from tailored trade pricing structure in its secondary market have been encouraging, he said.

In the first half, NZX saw a 13 per cent growth in fund management revenue and “very rapid growth” in dairy derivatives, resulting in revenues rising 154 per cent, while reduced trading activity meant listing and trading fees dropped and agri information revenues dipped 4.1 per cent.

The revenue dip was counteracted by lower operating costs, which fell 19 per cent to $22m.

In the first half of 2016, NZX paid out $2.9m in legal fees for its legal battle with the former owners of the Clear Grain Exchange.

The court case ultimately resulted in what the judge described a “nil-all draw”, with neither side awarded any costs.

Without that expense, the cost of the businesses it sold in 2016, and with the benefit of reduced operating costs in its fund management business, earnings before finance expenses, tax, depreciation, amortisation and gain on sale rose 34 per cent to $14.5m.

The shares last traded at $1.19, and have gained 13 per cent this year.

NZX doubles its profit NZX more than doubled first-half profit though revenue dipped slightly, with operating expenses falling as it streamlined operations as it seeks to focus its business.

Net profit rose to $7.95 million in the six months ended June 30 from $3.58m a year earlier, the market operator said in a statement.

NZX sold out of its unprofitable Clear Grain Exchange and agri magazines businesses in the fourth quarter of 2016, resulting in a 3.6 per cent revenue drop to $36.6m.

With that stripped out, revenue rose 1.1 per cent in the first half.

Chief executive Mark Peterson, who took over the role officially in April this year having been acting chief executive since January, said it was a very encouraging result and the business had been focused on its five-year strategic plan over the first half.

“Highlights from the first half included our SuperLife and Smartshares businesses, which experienced substantial revenue growth, while our global dairy derivatives market has become a true point of difference for NZX, and is now making a meaningful contribution to our revenue line,” Peterson said.

“Operating costs also reduced significantly due to the restructuring of the agri business and the absence of one-off costs.

“Disciplined cost control has ensured that our core cost base has been well contained.”

The steady decline in New Zealand’s sheep numbers continued at a slower pace over the past year as farmers in some areas rebuilt their flocks following drought, natural disasters and the impact of facial eczema.

Sheep numbers reduced to an estimated 27.34 million as at June 30 from 27.58 million a year earlier, according to the latest survey from the Economic Service of farmer-owned industry organisation Beef + Lamb New Zealand.

The annual 0.9 per cent decline compares with last year’s 5.3 per cent drop, and marks the fifth consecutive fall since 2012 when sheep numbers rose 0.4 per cent.

New Zealand now has about six sheep for every person, down from 22 per person in 1982 when there were more than 70 million sheep.

Most regions reported fewer breeding ewes resulting in a 1.9 per cent total decline to 17.8 million over the past year, although

Stepping up to stop shoplifting Matt Markham

afer Ashburton’s move to try and combat shoplifting in the Ashburton District needs to be applauded, but most importantly, it needs to be well supported by our business owners.

As youth and petty crimes rise across the country, it’s refreshing to see a community group working together to try and counteract any potential threats and while next Monday night’s meeting may only be one of information, it could also prove crucial in the future safeguarding of some of the businesses within our main centres.

For any new business owner to the Ashburton District, particularly those who come from a different culture to ours, it must be tough to come to terms with some of the abrupt behaviour seen on a daily basis as well as the threat of shoplifting – always an ever-present threat – in the mind of any store or shop owner.

So, for those people to know that there is potentially going to be a network set-up out there to help them out and to prewarn them of any desirables who might be lurking within our midst, is a major step forward in the right direction.

Of course, it won’t be quite as simple as putting a few plans into place and hoping for the best and it’s something the good folk at Safer Ashburton may have to continue to keep themselves involved in, but the ball is rolling and come next Tuesday morning we will have more skilled retail owners out there who will know what to look for and how to counter a situation that may arise.

What the whole information evening does show, once again, is that it doesn’t take too many chiefs to get a whole tribe into action.

We are a progressive bunch who are always keen to upskill and learn new things – particularly if it is going to be of benefit to us – so information evenings and workshops fit the bill perfectly.

With a solid plan in place, Ashburton could become a really safe place to own a business and that may draw more new faces to our shopfronts.

Another positive step forward, no matter what way you look at it.

Trendy kale fills the green gap W

e’re in the middle of late winter’s vegetable doldrums.

Home garden supplies are exhausted, endless wet weather has wreaked havoc with commercial growers’ gardens and imported vegetables are priced off the shopping list.

One vegetable that is around is kale. It’s not a new invention, it’s been around for years, but it has sud-

denly become trendy and that means there are plenty of recipes around for turning leaves of dark green kale into an important part of a meal.

Crisp kale chips 150g curly kale 1T olive oil or avocado oil 1/2 t chilli flakes 1t sesame seeds 1t flaky sea salt

■ Preheat oven to 175°C. ■ Line a baking tray with baking paper.

■ Cut kale leaves from the tough stalks.

■ Tear kale leaves into roughly 3-4cm bite-sized pieces and pat dry with paper towels.

■ Toss kale with oil, chilli flakes and sesame seeds in prepared baking tray.

■ Season with just a pinch of flakey salt (they’re quite delicate, so be careful not to over-salt them).

■ Lay in a single layer on prepared baking tray and bake for 12-15 minutes until crispy.

■ They will go a dark green colour with a little brown around the edges.

■ Be careful not to burn them, or they may taste bitter.

Serve in a bowl for a tasty, salty, crispy snack!

■ Cook leaves in boiling salted water until bite-tender.

■ Drain, reserving cooking water.

■ Cook pasta in the reserved cooking until al dente.

■ Drain, reserving cooking water.

■ Heat 2T olive oil in a large saucepan.

■ Add garlic and chilli flakes and fry for 1 minute to release flavours.

■ Add cooked kale and stir-fry for 2 minutes.

■ Transfer to a blender with some of the reserved cooking water and blend until smooth.

■ Return to a saucepan and keep hot.

■ Meanwhile, add remaining 2T oil to a frying pan.

■ Pan-fry skinless chorizo sausage until crisp, breaking it up with a wooden spoon as it fries.

■ Add pasta to kale sauce and season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

■ Stir through baby spinach leaves if using.

■ Serve in warmed bowls, topped with crisp chorizo sausage and parmesan, if using.

■ Heat the olive oil in a large deep skillet over medium-high heat.

■ Add the onions and kale.

■ Cook and stir until the onions become transparent and the kale wilts and reduces in volume, 5 to 7 minutes.

■ Reduce the heat to medium.

■ Stir the tomatoes and green chiles, garlic, water, bay leaves, cumin.

■ Simmer the vegetable mixture until the kale is soft, about 1 hour ■ Stir in the cannellini beans.

■ Continue simmering until beans are heated through, about 10 minutes.

■ Stir in the oregano and basil. Add salt and pepper to taste.

Add the mince in batches and brown. Drain the mince and set aside in a bowl.

■ Heat another tablespoon of oil in the same pan over a medium heat.

Add the onion and garlic and cook until soft. Increase the heat, add the tomato paste and stir for 3 minutes until it changes to a darker red colour. If using, add the red wine and let it bubble up for 30 seconds. Add the tomatoes, sugar, mushrooms, oregano (try rubbing it in your hands first to release the oils), stock and the mince. Simmer for about 30 minutes or until the sauce has reduced to your liking.

■ Add the spinach, courgette and fresh oregano and simmer for a few minutes until the excess liquid has evaporated. Taste and season with salt and pepper. Serve over al dente spaghetti and sprinkle with parmesan, the ciabatta crumb and parsley.

■ Ciabatta crumb: Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add the crumbs and rosemary and cook, stirring, for about 5-10 minutes until the crumbs are crunchy and golden on the outside.

Season and set aside.

Barnes gets the whistle One referee notorious in the eyes of New Zealand rugby fans has been replaced by another for the opening Bledisloe Cup test.

England whistler Wayne Barnes will control the test in Sydney on Saturday, replacing Jerome Garces.

Frenchman Garces suffered a calf injury while officiating a pre-season French club rugby match and hasn’t flown to Australia. Nigel Owens takes over from Barnes as assistant referee.

Barnes was scheduled to control the second Bledisloe Cup test in Dunedin next week but will now be an assistant, with Owens handed the whistle.

Garces was at the heart of the two

biggest rulings in the drawn series between the All Blacks and the British and Irish Lions.

He sent off Sonny Bill Williams in the second test, which the Lions won, before seemingly being the key figure in a contentious late ruling in the drawn third test in Auckland.

Referee Romain Poite appeared to act on Garces’ advice when he ruled Lion Ken Owens was accidentally offside, turning a kickable penalty to New Zealand into a scrum ruling.

Barnes’ moment of infamy came a decade ago when he allowed a French try which appeared to feature a forward pass in their World Cup defeat of the All Blacks in Cardiff. - NZME

A South African under 15 rugby side’s 221-0 win has stirred a debate about introducing a ‘mercy’ rule into youth matches. The South African interschools rugby record books were rewritten over the weekend when Bloemfontein’s Grey College annihilated renowned KwaZulu-Natal school, Glenwood.

Diamantveld High coach Jaco Dames slated the referee and both schools for games reaching over 100 points being allowed to continue. Dames said the results are humiliating for youngsters and will prevent them from continuing to play the game.

W

ith Australian rugby’s dirty laundry continuing to be flung out of the hamper on a daily basis, a new picture is forming about where blame lies for making this catastrophic mess.

For the last 18 months or so the players – Super Rugby through to the Wallabies – have, certainly in New Zealand, been seen to be the single biggest problem blighting the game across the Tasman.

Performance and results have been interpreted as irrefutable proof that the problems start and finish with the lack of quality being put on the field each week.

But what’s emerging now is that the players are not necessarily the cause of Australian’s demise but a symptom.

They sit above the line, visible, easy to judge and easy to blame.

Yet it seems they can fairly argue that they are victims of a governance and administrative regime that has simply blundered from one poorly considered plan to the next.

The damage to Australian rugby, which is extensive, has

been caused in the boardroom rather than the changing room.

How much money has been lost is staggering.

The Rebels have cost the Australian Rugby Union $17.5 million since they were formed in 2011. The Western Force have cost $5.5 million and in the last three years, the ARU has a lost a combined $12.7 million.

At some stage in the last six years the national body has had to bail out four of its five Super Rugby teams, with the Waratahs having not needed a cash injection since taking one a decade ago.

It’s hard to believe that there has been genuine adherence to a fiscally responsible growth strategy. The ARU have appeared to simply want more teams and continue to invest in them despite not having the resources to do so or any resounding business rationale.

Spend for today and ignore tomorrow.

But tomorrow has arrived and some serious questions are looming about how the ARU managed to create such an unholy mess.

Or at least these questions should be coming because the somewhat uncomfortable truth in all this is that World Rugby and Sanzaar have been eager and ready to interfere in the governance of Pacific Island nations’ rugby unions and freely air their concerns about the lack of expertise they have seen.

When a black hole appeared in the accounts of the Samoan Rugby Union a couple of years back, World Rugby had the auditors in quick smart, poking around.

That led to changes in personnel within the Samoan Rugby Union and a definite sense that World Rugby was keen to have a direct presence there to keep an eye on things.

Talk about lack of trust and it is this which essentially remains the biggest barrier to a team from the Islands being granted Super Rugby inclusion.

Sanzaar has no concerns about the playing base, but the governance and administration has been flagged as an area that needs to be improved: an area where trust has to be gained.

And yet, funnily enough, the far more considerable problem

for Sanzaar is clearly the governance and fiscal management of the heavily corporate ARU. But does anyone want to acknowledge that openly?

Does anyone within Sanzaar want to stand up and express concern that a group of well educated chaps, who have all held super important city jobs in the past have brought not just Australian rugby, but Super Rugby, to the brink of collapse?

Unlikely.

Rugby, for all its claims that it is trying to embrace diversity, still finds itself held captive to a secret network mentality. It remains much easier for those who sit around Super Rugby boardroom tables to protect themselves at all costs and divert blame elsewhere.

So here we sit with Australian rugby in ruins and arguments made that the sporting market is a tough one at the moment and everyone is feeling the squeeze, while in the same breath diminishing the prospects of a Super Rugby team being taken to Pasifika by casting aspersions on the ability of the Island unions to manage their own financial affairs.

Clash ‘a media beat-up’ Gold Coast coach Neil Henry has dismissed reports of his own sacking, saying he hasn’t spoken to the Titans board since a Monday meeting regarding his future at the NRL club. News Corp Australia reports claim Henry will be shown the door following Thursday’s clash with Parramatta, suggestions that Henry denied any knowledge of yesterday. Confirming it was business as usual, at least for now, Henry said he planned to coach on Thursday and beyond on the Gold Coast. As the end of the netball season approaches, the Ashburton College girls’ senior netball side are still fighting on two fronts.

The side will play two semifinals in two days, starting off with their clash against St Margaret’s College tonight.

Despite the challenge of playing two intensive games con-

secutively each week, coach Angela Mitchell said she is really pleased with how the side has performed.

“We have continued to go from strength to strength this season and we are now putting in complete performances in two games,” she said.

“The hard work they have put in is really paying off.”

The side played St Margaret’s

earlier in the season, but Mitchell believes it will be a strong test.

“They can win it if they turn up and play as a unit,” she said.

“At the secondary school level the skill and speed is more utilised while in the local competition there is more use of a physical presence,” Mitchell said.

“The girls have learnt over the years to be competitive in both

competitions and to be able to play a different style.”

The last time AshColl made the Supernet final was two years ago, where the side played St Margaret’s.

AshColl will play their other semi-final in the Mid Canterbury premier competition tomorrow night, facing off against Hampstead, a side they drew with in their most recent clash.

Ben Hunt has sent a scare through the Brisbane camp after suffering an arm injury at training ahead of Friday night’s NRL clash against his future club St George. The stand-in hooker left training clutching his arm after defensive drills yesterday ahead of the showdown with the club he will join next year on a $6 million deal. Hunt appeared to suffer a cork but would be monitored during the week. “I am pretty he is all good. They just take precautions around here,” Corey Oates said of Hunt’s scare. - AAP

Hayne ‘not worth wage’ Parramatta legend Peter Sterling has questioned whether Gold Coast star Jarryd Hayne is the player he once was after a disappointing NRL season. Flying Finn leads the way Mika Forss shot to the lead in the World Drivers Championship yesterday when he won three straight races, igniting hopes that Finland could win their first world title in 27 events.

Driving at Mohawk Downs in Ontario in the second WDC meeting of five in Canada, Forss ran fifth in the opening heat, but won the second heat with second favourite Dialamara ($4.30), then breezed past his rivals with wins on Lights Go Out ($3.10) and outsider Mego Moss ($29).

More comfortable driving straightout trotters in his homeland than pacers, the flying Finn now has 95 points, taking the series lead from Canada’s James MacDonald (83 points), who won the first heat yesterday, followed by USA driver Marcus Miller (74.5) and New Zealand’s defending champion Dexter Dunn (71), who finished second three times yesterday.

The other Kiwi representative, Mark Purdon (52), had a second and third to move into eighth place of 11 drivers.

Harrington fined Canterbury trainer-driver Jack Harrington has been fined $650 for betting on a horse he was engaged to drive at Addington last month.

Harrington placed a $145 win bet on trotter Diana Harbour, which he trains at Swannanoa, the night before the July 21 race. The Racing Integrity Unit’s betting analyst advised stewards that Harrington had placed the bet and he was prohibited from driving in the race and replaced by Dexter Dunn.

Massive offer for Woods

By Simon JoneS Premier League club Burnley are poised to make an improved £20 million ($NZ35.5m) bid for Leeds United striker – and All Whites captain – Chris Wood.

The Championship side have said the 25-year old is not for sale and dismissed Burnley’s offer of £12m ($21.3m) plus add-ons last week.

However, Burnley manager Sean Dyche is undeterred and wants to push through a deal for the Kiwi international who scored 30 goals last season, the Daily Mail reported.

Burnley had considered Napoli’s Duvan Zapata and Nicolas de Proville of Lille but Dyche prefers players with English league experience.

Leeds are ambitious to gain promotion and would struggle to replace the All Whites skipper’s goals though they have lined up Pierre-Michel Lasogga from Hamburg and Ross McCormack of Aston Villa.

Both are likely to be initial loans.

Burnley sold striker Andre Gray to Watford earlier this summer for £18.5m ($NZ32.8m).

English media outlets have reported that Dyche – who led his side to a shock 3-2 win over reigning Premier League champions Chelsea on Sunday – was interested in signing Wood to replace Gray.

New Leeds manager Thomas Christiansen poured cold water over the idea of selling Wood however, telling The Guardian of Wood’s importance to the club.

“Chris is very important and that is why he will not leave,” he said after Leeds’ 0-0 draw against Preston North End at the weekend.

“Many bids can come, of course, he is a good striker.

“But if we want to achieve something this season, you just cannot sell your best players.

“If we want to go up, we need to keep good players.”

Wood was the Championship’s leading goal scorer last season, netting 27 goals – 30 in all competitions – in England’s second tier league.

It was his nose for goal that has seen him monitored by other Premier League outfits, such as Southampton, Swansea City, Brighton and Hove Albion, and Stoke.

The Bleacher Report has also reported that West Bromwich Albion have also shown interest in signing Wood, more than seven years after the Baggies first signed him as a teenager.

Wood joined West Bromwich Albion from NRFL side Hamilton Wanderers in 2009, making his Premier League debut for the club in a 2-2 draw against Portsmouth as a 17-year-old.

Sport Tomic’s plan in jeopardy Bernard Tomic’s desire to earn a lifetime of income from the elite ATP tour faces a major setback if his latest fall in world rankings forces him to regularly qualify for tournaments. The Australian has dropped to 95th from a career high of 17 after a series of first-round exits and poor performances this season.

Tomic will be forced through the qualification process for US Open lead-up event the Winston-Salem Open should he choose to compete.

Tomic has confessed to only playing the game for money. He also claimed he put in little effort and faked an injury at Wimbledon in July.

Matt eyes another medal

Eight months into what has been a successful year for multisport athlete Matthew Clough, he is hoping to add another medal to his collection.

Come Sunday, Clough will have his bags packed and be flying off to Pentiction, Canada, to compete at the 2017 Junior Aquathlon World Championships.

Competing in the Under-19 Male category, Clough is hoping to equal or improve his thirdplace finish in Mexico last year.

“Obviously the dream goal is to win it, but to come back with a medal around my neck would be pretty special,” Clough said.

“Looking at the start list I would say I’ve got a good chance of doing well.”

Apart from four days off recently with the flu, Clough said his preparations for the event had been going well, training 11 times a week.

“You can race without a bit of training but you can’t race while feeling like crap so it was important to take the time to feel better,” he said.

Clough will either find himself working on speed or endurance, both in running and in the pool.

The Ashburton College student will have five days on Canadian soil to help get over any jet-lag and acclimatise ahead of the event.

“Before Mexico I hadn’t slept for 36 hours and that was a struggle,” he said.

“The flight to Vancouver leaves Auckland at 8pm so hopefully I will be able to get some sleep.”

Clough said going to the world

“It is quite cool being around people that are like you and being able to celebrate that,” he said.

“The NZ team are really good and there are plenty of meetings and activities to get to know everyone.”

For Clough, this is his biggest event of the year.

After a short break on returning from Canada, he will be turning his sights back on the two-day event in the Coast to Coast.
