The committee has raised $250,000 out of the $300,000 needed to complete the project, but there’s sufficient cash in the bank to ensure completion of the new build and its connection to the existing museum, he said. “This will allow us to complete the project to lock up stage. Winning ewe defies convention By Colin WillisCroft

Judging convention was turned on its head yesterday with the performance of a texel ewe at the Canterbury A&P Show. The supreme champion texel at the show almost always goes to a ram, however, this time around it went to a ewe from the Broadgate Texel Stud in Mayfield, owned by Elizabeth and Brebner McEwan. Elizabeth said picking up the supreme champion award with the ewe was a huge surprise, as it’s only the second time a ewe has claimed the honour “and the first one was one of mine as well”. The secret to the ewe’s success was in its breeding, Elizabeth said, adding that both the ewe and her two lambs will be retained for stud duties. Broadgate also picked up a number of ribbons for winning and placing in other texel classes at the show and sheep from the stud will be back in front of the

judges again today for the champion meat breed and supreme meat sheep of the show classes. The McEwans are regulars at the Canterbury show and this year they took six rams, three ewes, two ewe hoggets and five lambs to the event in a purposebuilt, customised trailer. Their show animals were fed on spring grass and supplemented with a texel-friendly mix developed by Dawes Grain and Seed.

“It’d be nice to get the extra bit of money to allow us to put the wow factor inside, but we’re rapt to get to this stage where we can see something for all our efforts.” Getting to the stage where construction could start, would have been impossible without business and community support, he said.

Excitement is building among a group of Ashburton highland dancers as they prepare to make their world stage debut in Paris. Twenty-five pupils from the Julie Hawke School of Dance, including 11 from Mid Canterbury, will travel next week to the annual International Gathering of Scottish Highland Dancing, in Disneyland in the French capital. “We have been making up all these dances, we have been

working on it all year,” Hawke said. And that had been a lot of fun, with the brief being to have a Disney theme but retain highland dancing techniques. “I think I’m an expert on every Disney tune now,” Hawke said. Characters included Toy Story characters Buzz Lightyear and Woody, as well as characters from a wide range of other movies. There was Peter Pan, Mary Poppins, Aladdin, and of course stars from Frozen and Cinderella.

Among the group’s favourites was a Moana piece, within which they were combining Celtic and New Zealand heritage. “I’m sure we will feel very proud of presenting that in Paris and showing a bit of our Kiwi culture,” Hawke said. The group had been fundraising for 18 months, and were to set off next week for the fourday festival. Hawke had been helped in the choreography by Ashburton’s Lana Donaldson and Ruby Wills.

As the weather warms up, the district’s waterways are beginning to beckon. But whether you’re a swimmer, a water sports enthusiast or a boatie, community groups are urging one thing – stay water safe this summer. Environment Canterbury Navigation Safety Officer Gary Manch said there were three things to bear in mind when jumping on board a boat. “Wear a lifejacket, carry suitable forms of communication for the area – a cellphone’s no good if there’s no service … and know what the rules are for that area,” he said. “It’s all about safety.”

Following an incident on Lake Pukaki last week, police were also urging the public to be prepared when out on the water. Two women were rescued from the lake after their inflatable boat drifted and one was hospitalised. Police inspector Hirone Waretini said things could have very easily not gone well for both women. He said it was important to remember that conditions on the water could change in a heartbeat. “Make sure if you’re going out on the water that you’ve got the right equipment – especially flotation, warm clothing and some form of communication in case things go awry,” he said.

Water Safety New Zealand (WSNZ) have also recently invested $1.66 million into water safety education in a bid to bring down the nation’s drowning rate. Funding recipients included Hiwi the Kiwi, a primary school education initiative which recently visited Methven and St Joseph’s primary schools. WSNZ CEO Jonty Mills said “it’s imperative that water safety skills training becomes an integral part of the education process for all New Zealand children”. WSNZ reported 108 drowning fatalities across New Zealand last year, plus 208 drowning hospitalisations. They also reported a five-year average of six drownings per year

Anxiety affecting youth By Sarah harriS Youth are being swept up in an epidemic of anxiety, not depression, a psychologist of 30 years has said. Auckland-based Gwendoline Smith has seen a swell in anxiety in her clinic, with half of her patients now battling the disorder. She said it was often confused with depression as it was a neurological pathway to it. Smith, who specialises in depression and anxiety, has just released her fifth book, called Knowing. It offers mental-health coping mechanisms for youth. She believed it could be a powerful preventative tool in the battle against teen suicide. Anxiety is a survival mechanism that gets switched on to deal with threats, Smith said. It would be a typical and useful response when

confronted with a tiger in the wild. But in the contemporary world it’s being switched on for the wrong reasons. The psychologist believed youth lacked resilience to deal with problems which was a result of a rapidly changing world and growing up in privilege. “Young people will become anxious if they’re not part of the A team, not wearing the right label or their hair isn’t cut and coloured in the right way. These clearly are not life-threatening situations.” The cause of anxiety could involve genetics, environment, nurture, family, media exposure, bullying or the result of a physiological condition, Smith said. But one element that could be the reason for an increase in the disorder is the rapid changes people in first world countries face and a lack of resilience. – NZME

Farmer swaps gumboots for stilettos By SuSan SandyS

Dairy Woman of the Year Jessie Chan-Dorman is not used to wearing stilettos, in fact she had never worn them until New Zealand Cup Day. The Dorie dairy farmer, company director and mum-of-one entered the Fashion in the Field event, and spent much of the day adapting to her new footwear. “Walking in stilettos for the first time and getting across the stage was a challenge, I went slowly and carefully,” Chan-Dorman said. Chan-Dorman was assisted in putting the outfit together by fellow dairy farmer and former fashion event frontrunner Katie Flett. “It was quite nerve-wracking standing alongside some pretty stunning outfits,” Chan-Dorman said. But it was an amazing experience nonetheless. She can’t wait to get back and do it all again, and will be donning the outfit and competing at Riccarton on Saturday. Of course, Chan-Dorman is much more used to wearing gumboots, when out on the farm tending to cows, or sneakers, when in the farm office doing accounts and human resource management. “My sneakers are feeling ultracomfortable right now,” she said yesterday.

A 1-year-old boy who was airlifted to Waikato Hospital after being run over by a reversing car in Whangamata yesterday morning is now in a stable condition. The boy is the son of a German couple who are staying at a property there. Whangamata Sergeant Lara Beisly said the incident took place about 9.15am when another German tourist, the driver of the car, was heading off for a surf. The boy had gone out to play while his parents, who are travelling New Zealand by bicycle, were having breakfast. “Luckily, the wheels didn’t go over him or he would not have survived,” Beisly said.

An Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter spokesman confirmed they were called to an incident at 9.10am where a baby had suffered head injuries and was in a serious condition. The boy’s mother flew with him to Waikato Hospital while the father and a 3-year-old child were driven to the hospital. A Waikato District Health Board spokeswoman said the boy was now in a stable condition and recovering on a ward. Show will leave you intrigued Tomorrow’s Too Late Directed by Georgie Sivier

f you’re heading along to the Ashburton Trust Event Centre this week to check out the latest show on offer, Tomorrow’s Too Late, take everything you know or have seen of stage shows and throw it out the window. After a long tradition of popular stage shows with well-known storylines and familiar characters here in Ashburton, Georgie Sivier’s Rock Opera is unlike anything we’ve seen before and will leave you both intrigued and entertained. Our review came from Monday night’s rehearsal and, as one would expect, there were still some issues to be ironed out, but if Sivier can wave her magic wand and get all the ducks in a row before tonight’s opening, then those who fill the seats are in for a treat. Tomorrow’s Too Late is a tale of sticking it to the man – a story of love, loss, despair and community told through the use of rock songs, carefully and cleverly placed throughout the show. From the opening scene of Welcome to the Jungle, to the ever-popular Bohemian Rhapsody at the end, the audience will

be tapping their toes to the beat throughout. With some technical issues still to be ironed out over the final days before curtains go up, what really shone was the musical talent on offer. To pull off an opera of any sort, you need big voices and this is where Tomorrow’s Too Late excels. Vocally it’s brilliant and some of the big group numbers are as good as you’ll hear on the local stage show scene – led by some brilliant performers. Wayne Pannett, who is musical director, has produced the oracle with the 20-strong cast. Their harmonies are on point and the strong voices on stage are given ample opportunity in which to shine. As well as directing and playing in the on-stage band, Pannett also steps away from the instruments to portray his talents further with a near-perfect rendition of The Vamps, Wake Up. Others to shine on stage include the vastly experienced Chris Woods who steals the show in the second half, particularly

with his effort on the challenging Bohemian Rhapsody. Kim Willis is also a shining light. Her voice commands you to listen and her version of Joan Jett’s Bad Reputation was excellent. Dayle Stoliker, who is becoming well-known on the stage around these parts, again plays the villainous role to perfection, but it is his presence and strong voice that make him stand out of the pack.

With a cast of 20, we can’t name everyone, but every performers deserves a pat on the back for their efforts, particularly the

But with strong vocal performances and an intriguing storyline, it does have a little bit of everything. Tomorrow’s Too Late runs from tonight until Saturday. Reviewed by Matt Markham

What is it that makes someone influential? Matt Markham

e asked the question on our Guardian Facebook page yesterday about who they felt was the most influential person, past or present, in New Zealand and generated some discussion about what makes a person influential. I’ll admit that I had no idea there was a certain criteria, but more that it was just something that we, as people, deemed someone to be from time to time. In everyday life, it’s simple. The most influential people in our lives are our family, friends, educators, colleagues and employers. They hold a lot of the sway when it comes to what happens to us and therefore are extremely influential. But on a national scale it’s a little different. Some might say that politicians play an influential role in our lives – but how often can you say in the past month that you have been swayed or influenced by something a politician has done? Post-election, I would imagine not many of you. Influential people are those who have left an ever-lasting mark on us, I believe. People who because of their efforts we feel significant. Take Sir Edmund Hillary. He showed each and every New Zealander that if you are prepared to put the work in and stick to your goals that anything is achievable in life and if you want to, you might even be able to scale mountains. Sir Colin Meads is another. Pinetree had a huge influence on so many people. He taught from a different score sheet to most in that he strayed away a lot from the normal, showing that you didn’t have to wear the flash suit and drive the fast car to be successful and that you could, in fact, just be a typical Kiwi bloke who loves a beer and a chat down at the pub with your mates. It would be interesting to hear others’ thoughts on what it is that makes someone influential and even who they think has been, or are, some of the most influential people in New Zealand. The best part is that not everyone’s opinion will be the same and there will be a variety of people chosen for a long list of different reasons.

Cost a major barrier to higher education I

am proud to be part of a Labour-led government who will be progressive and future focused. We have set ourselves a 100day plan and we have hit the ground running with a programme of work across housing, health, education, families, the environment and other priority areas. I have chosen to focus on the one-year fees free fulltime equivalent for everyone starting tertiary education or training for the first time for this column. We will make the first year of tertiary education or training fees free from January 1, 2018. It is important to note that this isn’t just about university tertiary study, we want people to use this opportunity to undertake trades apprenticeships and other applicable forms of study.

Whether it is first, second or third chance education, it remains the most transformative influence in our lives. The nature of work is changing rapidly and we need to be future focused if we are to continue to have a workforce that can adapt to whatever the future of work may look like. People need to have the op-

tion to re-train without having the burden of a student loan hanging around their necks. Student debt holds people back for many years after they have completed their study. Having to meet repayment obligations can make it hard for people to save and this is a contributing factor to our plummeting home ownership among under 40s. Despite the fact that we currently have interest-free loans, we know that cost remains a barrier to post-school education. This barrier comprises both fees, which are up over 40 per cent since 2008 and rising living costs such as rent. The cost barrier comprises both fees, which are up over 40 per cent since 2008, and rising living costs such as rent. We acknowledge this and will also move to increase student allowances and living cost loans to a maximum of $50. Aussies back gay marriage Australians supported gay marriage in a postal survey that ensures Parliament will consider legalising same-sex weddings this year. The Australian Bureau of Statistics said yesterday 62 per cent of registered voters who responded in the unprecedented survey favoured reform. The conservative government promised to allow a bill creating marriage equality to be considered in Parliament in the final two-week session that is due to end on December 7. A “no” vote in the survey would have put marriage equality off the political agenda, perhaps for years. Thousands of marriage equality supporters waving rainbow flags gathered anxiously in city parks around the country and cheered when the results were announced. Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, a vocal advocate of marriage equality, called on lawmakers to heed the “overwhelming” result and to commit to legislate for gay marriage by next month. “They voted ‘yes’ for fairness, they voted ‘yes’ for commitment, they voted ‘yes’ for love,” Turnbull told reporters. “Now it is up to us here in the Parliament of Australia to get on with

Army says ‘this is not a takeover’ In an extraordinary statement after long hours of unrest, Zimbabwe’s army yesterday sought to reassure the country that “this is not a military takeover” and that while President Robert Mugabe was safe and sound, the military was targeting “criminals around him” who have sent the nation spinning into economic despair.

“As soon as we have accomplished our mission, we expect that the situation will return to normalcy,” the army spokesman said, calling on churches to pray for the country. At least three explosions were heard in Zimbabwe’s capital and military vehicles were seen in the streets after the army commander had

threatened to “step in” to calm political tensions over the 93-year-old Mugabe’s possible successor. The ruling party accused the commander of “treasonable conduct”. It was not clear where Mugabe and his wife were. “Their security is guaranteed,” the army statement said. The president reported-

ly attended a weekly Cabinet meeting the day before. “We wish to make it abundantly clear that this is not a military takeover,” the army statement said. “We are only targeting criminals around (Mugabe) who are committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country in order to bring them to justice.” - AP

Meghan Markle could be leaving US drama Suits, according to reports. Sources told the Hollywood Reporter that the legal drama is close to confirming an eighth season, while Markle and co-star Patrick J. Adams “plot their exit”. Markle and Adams’ characters, Rachel Zane and Mike Ross, are engaged in the popular TV show, with Hello! magazine reporting that the couple’s wedding has already been shot. Rumours have long circulated about the 36-year-old leaving the show, as she spends more time with boyfriend Prince Harry in London.

Tampa serial killer strikes for a fourth time Police believe a serial killer in Tampa has struck for a fourth time after a 60-year-old man was found shot dead. Ronald Felton was gunned down around 4.51am local time as he crossed the street on the way to feed the homeless at a local church where he volunteers. Police said the victim, a construction worker and father of three adult children, was crossing the street when a man dressed in black came up behind him and shot him. His murder, in the city’s Seminole Heights neighbourhood, is close to where three other people were murdered in apparently random shoot-

ings. At a press conference, cops conceded the killer was likely the same person in all four cases. “It’s very unfortunate here that we’ve had another one,” said Police Chief Brian Dugan. “We will hunt this person down until we find them,” Mayor Bob Buckhorn said. Officers arrived within seconds of the gunshots, as they had been patrolling in the area already. “We want to talk with as many people as we can, we don’t think whoever did this has gone very far at this point,” Tampa police spokesman Steve Hegarty said. - AP

GST on the cards for online overseas purchases Online shoppers can expect to start paying GST for all goods they buy from overseas after Revenue Minister Stuart Nash said he would “absolutely” extend the law to cover goods as well as services. Nash told Newstalk ZB yesterday that the National Government had not gone far enough when it introduced the so-called “Netflix tax” to gather GST on services and

electronic purchases such as movies, e-books and music. He said that gave an unfair advantage to overseas sellers over New Zealand sellers. “It gives a 15 per cent competitive advantage to [retailers] overseas. While our retailers had to deal with GST, overseas people didn’t. It’s the right thing to do,” he said.

The Netflix tax kicked in last October, requiring sellers such as Apple to charge GST on online purchases from New Zealand. It came after a review in 2015 found the Government was missing out on about $180 million a year by not collecting GST on online purchases, including $40m from shopping on iTunes, Netflix, Spotify and other online services.

However, that did not impact on purchases of goods from overseas which were worth less than $400. GST has long been charged on goods worth more than that. It follows moves by Australia to require New Zealand companies such as TradeMe to collect Australian GST on purchases sent to Australian consumers. Currently no GST has to be paid

on imported physical goods worth less than $A1000 ($1109). Under the change, New Zealand retailers, suppliers or manufacturers who sell a total of more than $A75,000 worth of goods directly to Australian consumers will have to charge Australian GST (10 per cent) on those purchases, including those under $A1000. - NZME

Rabo NZ chief resigns Rabobank New Zealand chief executive Daryl Johnson has resigned, less than two years after taking over the reins of the rural lending specialist. Johnson’s resignation will take effect on December 22, and Rabobank NZ has commenced a process to appoint a new chief executive officer, chairman Henry van der Heyden said. In March, the rural lending

specialist posted a 14 per cent decline in annual profit to $89.5 million last year. The decline in profit was largely due to the bank booking $15.1 million in impairment charges on bad debt. At the time, Johnson said the provisioning was prudent given the challenging dairy industry conditions experienced in recent seasons. - NZME

Economic growth is expected to firm to about 3 per cent by the middle of 2018, according to the bank’s Quarterly Economic Forecasts. “While it’s early days for the new government, there are some broad policy implications that will influence the economy – inbound migration will slow more rapidly, cooling population growth,” ASB chief economist Nick Tuffley said. “That means overall economic growth will not be quite as strong, although there will be some offset from stronger government spending.” Minimum wage increases will be more rapid than in recent years, and are likely to flow over to other wage rates if businesses want to retain relativity to the minimum wage. “For small businesses, these wage pressures can be hard to absorb. “It will really put the focus on seeking productivity gains to help ‘pay’ for the wage increases,” Tuffley said. IrrigationNZ has described a petition presented by Greenpeace at Parliament earlier this week as misleading because it misrepresented the facts surrounding irrigation in New Zealand. Speaking before receiving the petition, Minister of Conservation and Associate Environment Minister, Green MP Eugenie Sage, said she commended the work that Greenpeace had done “to draw attention to the harm large-scale irrigation has done to our rivers”. “One of the 20 goals in the Green Party’s Confidence and Supply Agreement with the Labour Party is to ‘improve water quality and prioritise achieving healthy rivers, lakes and aquifers with stronger regulatory instruments, funding for freshwater enhancement and winding down government support for irrigation’,” Sage said. “By subsidising the pollution of our rivers, the previous government showed it had little commitment to our environment, or the economy that depends on a clean, green brand.” However, IrrigationNZ chief executive Andrew Curtis said the petition misrepresented how irrigation has been funded and used, and ignored the wide range of benefits to New Zealand from irrigation, as well as the efforts made to address environmental issues.

“Greenpeace has presented a petition seeking to stop government funding of irrigation schemes. The petition is misleading as the majority of money provided to irrigation schemes by Crown Irrigation Investments has been in the form of loans, which have to be paid back with interest,” Curtis said. “The loan funding supports new irrigation schemes but also supports work to modernise existing irrigation schemes so they can use water more efficiently, something many people would support if they knew about it.” Curtis said the petition’s focus on irrigation being used by dairy farms did not fairly represent how irrigation is used in New Zealand, as more than half of our irrigated land is to grow crops, for sheep and pasture grazing, and for fruit, vegetable and wine production. Most dairy farms in New Zealand do not use irrigation. “Modern irrigation schemes can also have a range of environmental benefits,” he said, adding that trials by the Foundation for Arable Research showed that arable farms with irrigation leached less nitrogen than the equivalent dryland farms. He said irrigation also promotes the use of consistent ground cover, either through crops or pasture, through the summer growing season, which reduces the risk of wind erosion of soil and surface sediment run-off.

Deer velvet joint venture aims for a world first The New Zealand deer industry has agreed to support one of South Korea’s largest pharmaceutical companies in its plans to develop and market a product with proven health benefits based on New Zealand deer velvet. The chief executive of Yuhan Corporation, Jung Hee Lee, and the chief executive of Deer Industry New Zealand (DINZ), Dan Coup, signed a memorandum of understanding yesterday in Wellington, witnessed by the Minister of Agriculture Damien O’Connor and the Ambassador for the Republic of Korea, Seung-bae Yeo. Lee said Yuhan’s objective is to successfully develop, register and market a health food product containing scientifically validated components of New Zealand deer velvet. “This will be a world-first. In recent years a number of Korean companies have developed easy-to-consume formulations

of traditional herbal products based on deer velvet, but none have commissioned supporting research in New Zealand to the same level of detail that Yuhan will do,” he said. “AgResearch and Yuhan scientists will be working together to build on existing scientific knowledge. AgResearch is recognised internationally for its knowledge of velvet processing techniques, the composition of deer velvet and the potential health benefits.” Coup said DINZ and Yuhan have a shared interest in the registration of New Zealand deer velvet as a health food. “If this is achieved it will further strengthen the reputation of New Zealand deer velvet as a natural, safe and quality food ingredient in Korea.” He said DINZ will work with Yuhan to help promote the “New Zealand velvet story” and support the successful launch

of its velvet products where appropriate. “The two parties may also co-fund some specific areas of research and marketing activities, but these will be subject to separate agreements.” Ashley Kyung-in Chung, head of Yuhan’s food and health marketing team, said the company would invest a minimum of $1.5 million on research with AgResearch and had budgeted for the substantial costs involved in registering a functional food claim and taking a product to market. She said Yuhan had chosen New Zealand

as the source of velvet because of the country’s transparency on three fronts – the farming environment, animal welfare and the traceable and hygienic supply chain. “Yuhan is one of the most respected companies in Korea – consumers trust us and trust our partners. We travel the world looking for ingredients that are produced in systems as close to nature as possible and where animals are treated with care – that’s why we have come to New Zealand. Velvet from other countries does not have the same standards as New Zealand.”

What’s my house really worth? When you’ve lived in a property for a while it can be hard to be rational about its worth. How can you put a price on the spot where you’ve built so many memories with family and friends? Someone will surely recognise the hours you spent sanding back the windows or digging out the agapanthus in the garden and reward you with a high price, won’t they? Unfortunately potential buyers may see things differently, especially in a slow housing market. There are several methods you can use to gauge the worth of your property. Remember that the rateable value or RV (formerly known as the government valuation, or GV) of your property doesn’t really provide any clues. These valuations are done by the local council to work out what share of rates a household should pay. They are only done every three years and don’t take any improvements into account – increasingly, properties that include an RV figure in the advertising will come with a disclaimer that it is not indicative of current market value. These days you can gather a lot of information for free thanks to websites like Trade Me and Homes.co.nz. Trade Me’s Property Insights has information on more than 1.5 million homes, including rateable value data, previous sale prices, when the property was built and what size it is. The site also provides an estimated value range, based on a melting pot of data from sales of comparable properties, listing details and user activity. Homes.co.nz operates similarly. Its estimate service is built on a complex set of valuation models, using around 30 million pieces of data bought from councils nationwide, plus sales values and a wide set of property features. Both sites recognise there are a number of factors at play, so they offer an estimated value range that can be quite broad. While both these sites are useful, they don’t show the full picture and should only be used as the starting point in determining value. They can’t take the condition of your property into account and they may not recognise any improvements you might have made (though homes.co.nz does allow owners to ‘claim’ their property and edit information about it). Let’s say you own a large property in an area where there have been some big-

ticket sales in the past year. Your property might have some serious structural issues and be in generally poor condition, yet the algorithms may claim that it is worth a lot more than any sensible buyer would pay for it because other houses in the neighbourhood have sold for high prices. The impact of this is two-fold. Firstly, the seller could anticipate a big pay-day that may never arrive; and secondly, some buyers may be put off making an offer because they think it’s out of range. There are a couple of ways to combat this. When you start working with a real estate agent to sell your property they must supply you with a current market appraisal or CMA. This is based on similar information to the online versions, but it also comes with the agent’s real-time, real-life knowledge of the area, what similar properties have sold for and the condition and particular characteristics of your own property (such as whether it has been repainted recently or it’s in a state of disrepair). The agent will have had the chance to walk through your property and identify its unique selling propositions, such as good sun, proximity to desirable schools and other features that buyers like. It’s important to note that you may get varying CMA ranges from different real estate agents as they may each take a divergent perspective on your property that you will then need to consider.

Your other option is to pay a registered valuer to provide you with an independent valuation. This service comes at a cost (the price will vary, depending on the level of detail), but it will be more accurate. The Property Institute, which represents valuers, says a registered valuation can help sellers be a little more clinical about their property’s worth.

Keeping up with kumara Like potatoes, kūmara would have to be one of those vegetables that is a pretty regular feature in my pantry. They’re versatile (there’s a long list of dishes I can add kūmara to) and they taste great! I’ve enjoyed growing kūmara in my garden for some time but we’ve never sold it at the nursery. So, I’m pretty excited to announce that you can now purchase kūmara seedlings from our stockists or from our online shop at www.awapuni. co.nz. Our regular-sized bundles have four seedlings and our bulk bundles contain 10 seedlings. Not sure how many you’ll need? Well, this is how I work out how many to plant. If all goes well with my kūmara growing I expect each plant to produce around a bucket of tubers. So, a regularsized bundle should produce around three to four buckets of kūmara. Once you’ve worked out how many seedlings you need, the next job is to find the right spot to plant them. Each seedling needs to be planted around 50cm to 1m from the next, so you do need a bit of space to have a kūmara crop. Kūmara like a pH of 6.0 to 6.5. If you’re not sure what pH your soil is, you can buy a simple to use pH kit from your local garden centre. If the pH isn’t high enough add a bit of lime to sweeten the soil. Don’t add too much, or any if you don’t need it, because too much lime will mean you end up with small kūmara. Now, it’s important that you raise a mound of soft soil for the kūmara to spread out in. a rake and then mound it up into a hill around 40cm high. Next make a small trench approximately 5cm deep and lay the seedling so that the root is lying in the trench parallel to the top of the soil, rather than pushing the root down like you might with another vegetable. But make sure you bend the seedling so the leaves are sticking out of the top of the soil (a J shape). This will ensure the plant’s roots (via the leaves) get plenty of warmth from the sun. Water gently around the plant – it’s important not to water forcefully as this might make the mound flatten out or the plant roll off the mound. Do this for the first few days and then ensure they get some water weekly. Depending on what summer is like this year you may not need to do any extra watering at all. But if it’s hot and dry keep an eye on things and water at least weekly. Generally, try to lift the runners so they don’t put roots into the ground. The runners are the shoots that run along

you can expect to start digging into your crop. It’s important you harvest before the first frost. Around this time the leaves may start to yellow, which is a sign they’re ready. So, around four months after you’ve planted put your hand in the ground and gently see if the kūmara feels ready – this is called tickling! When you know they’re ready, harvest very gently. Broken kūmara won’t store. You may have to really follow the plant around with your hands under the soil to ensure they come out without breaking. If you want to store them for a long time it’s important they are cured properly. This is when the starch is converted to sugar and a second skin is created that allows them to last longer in storage. If they’re cured well they can last for up to a year in storage. The professionals use temperature and humidity controlled storage sheds to do this but you can try and replicate this in a few ways. Once they’re out of the ground keep them at a temperature of around 2530 degrees Celsius with high humidity (around 90 per cent) for at least seven days – including at night. If you need to increase the humidity, try putting them in a box and covering with a blanket or plastic with some holes in it. QUICK MEAL Lamb 500g Quality Mark lamb rump, cut into 2.5cm pieces 8 wooden skewers, soaked (see tips) 2 yellow capsicum, deseeded and cut into similar size pieces as the lamb 2 small red onions, cut into thin wedges 2 T olive oil 2 T finely chopped mint leaves Fresh mint pesto 2 cups mint leaves 20g shelled unsalted pistachio nuts or blanched almonds 1 clove garlic, crushed finely grated zest of ½ lemon 3 T olive oil

The Allenton Bowling club has several teams entered in interclub competitions both locally and against Christchurch clubs and they are all performing well. In the past week the Ladies 5s had a win against Rakaia and the under 8yrs beat Burnside 7 by 28-11. The 3/4’s men’s pennants team beat Woodend 52-47 and the Ladies 2/4’s pennants team also had a win against Woodend 32-24. On Monday November 13 our Ladies 7s team which consists of singles, pairs and fours won 5 of their 6 games against Rakaia and Ashburton. With 1 more round to be played next Monday against Methven who also had five wins a good game is ensured between these two teams. Good progress is being made with club championship play and this week the artificial green is being lifted. We are all looking forward to playing on the new one which we hope will be laid before Christmas. Congratulations to Richard Kane, Bevan Ra-

Allenton Croquet Club Ann Sunbeam club president welcomed a good attendance of members. The film evening was quite successful. It was decided to transfer $1000 to the Charitable Trust. Club captain Barbara Field reported the annual Engravers Tournament is on Tuesday, November 21. Club competitions should be played as soon as possible. It was agreed we would have a raffle early next year. Christmas Luncheon will be held on Wednesday 6 December. The next meeting is on Wednesday December 13 at 3.30pm.

Ashburton Golf Club It’s been quite a while since I put pen to paper, so thought it was about time that I got

myself organised and started again. Lots has happened around the club, but one thing stays constant, the course has been immaculate over winter and has bounced back well after coring, a big well done to Ben, Tim and all the helpers. The club has had an influx of younger players this year, and the atmosphere around the place is wonderful. To try and ride the youthful wave our men’s captain Barry Day put a youthful team of four into the county stroke, with two elder statesmen of 50 years old and 48, and a couple of young pups. I remember that the two old boys shot nett 66 and 68 but for the life of me can’t recall the pups’ score, maybe you can ask Sean and Jordan. Lots coming up soon we will be having our Radius Care Xmas salvers, Final rounds of the RMF cup and qualifying for the Property Brokers Shootout, all great club sponsors. Tickets now on sale for club presentation night, ask in the bar. That will do for now, promise I will be back next week. Good golfing.

Benji Marshall’s biggest regret scenes, it was clear that the move hadn’t worked. “I just felt like I wasn’t up to that standard at the time,” Marshall added. “The coach came to me and said it wasn’t working out the way we wanted it to if you want to go back to league here is your opportunity. I thought about it and let it sit with me and it felt like a pretty good idea at the time.” While it won’t be remembered as a great career move Marshall thinks the change altered the way he approached his football and it rejuvenated him ahead of a move back to rugby league midway through 2014. “Definitely refreshing, definitely humbling but a success for me because I found what I was missing the last couple of years – the desire and motivation to turn up every day and know what I needed to do,” he said. Marshall played 54 games for the St George-Illawarra Dragons from 2014-16 before linking with the Brisbane Broncos this year. He played 14 games for the Broncos this year and has signed a one-year deal to return to the Wests Tigers in 2018. - NZME

Former Kiwis captain Benji Marshall has opened up on his disappointing stint in rugby union and admits he feels he let Blues fans down. The 32-year-old signed a twoyear $500,000-a-season deal to switch codes and play for the Blues in 2014 but he managed just six games before he was released to return to the 13-man code. A decade into his decorated rugby league career Marshall found himself out of favour at the Wests Tigers in 2013 and searching for form. Not wanting to play against his beloved Tigers, Marshall decided to move back to New Zealand. “I don’t regret many things but that whole Auckland Blues saga thing is part of it,” Marshall said. “I feel like I let the fans down in that department. “Because I felt so a part of the Tigers family I didn’t want to play for any other rugby league teams so I felt like union was my only option at the time.” Marshall joined the struggling Blues franchise and made a handful of appearances without setting the world on fire. Jimmy Neesham’s international cricket future looks uncertain after missing selection for the New Zealand test, limited overs and ‘A’ sides within the past two months. Neesham played for Otago against Central Districts at Dunedin in the Plunket Shield yesterday. In six previous first-class innings this season he has averaged 24.60 with the bat, and taken five wickets at an average of 19 from 35 overs with the ball. His 12-test career began in style, becoming the first New Zealander to score two centuries in his first two matches. His non-selection suggests his performances are perceived to have plateaued in the past year. Before the Black Caps left for their limited overs tour of India, coach and chief selector Mike Hesson said Neesham had the oppor-

tunity to push his way back into the side for the home summer. “Jimmy needs go back and really dominate domestic cricket with both bat and ball. We know Jimmy is a talented player, but we’ve spoken with him around improving the consistency in all areas of his game.” The 27-year-old is understood to still be keen to progress his international prospects rather than pursue a freelance T20 career. He played for Kent in England’s domestic T20 league during the New Zealand winter. The all-rounder was also part of New Zealand’s Champions Trophy squad, but could not dominate with bat or ball in the matches against Australia, England or Bangladesh. Neesham began that tour as a senior player in the Ireland-Bangladesh tri-series with so many players away on Indian Pre-

mier League duty. His best contribution was 52 off 48 balls in the victory over Bangladesh in Dublin. Before leaving, Neesham said while his batting had been “going nicely” over the previous couple of limited overs series, his focus had been getting his bowling “up to scratch”. He was determined to pursue a career as an all-rounder, despite a potential bottleneck with Colin de Grandhomme, Corey Anderson and Mitchell Santner. “It’s probably the opposite,” Neesham said. “There is no thought of becoming just a batsman.” Neesham has spent past seasons in the IPL, but no contract this year meant he worked on his strength and conditioning with Black Caps trainer Chris Donaldson. - NZME

Hudson backs Wood to start New Zealand coach Anthony Hudson has backed star striker Chris Wood to start in Thursday’s World Cup intercontinental playoff second leg against Peru. But he is more circumspect on the chances of Tommy Smith. Wood came off the bench in Saturday’s 0-0 first-leg draw in Wellington due to a hamstring issue, playing just 19 minutes. Yet despite continuing to feel tightness in his hamstring, the Burnley attacker is more than likely to be in the XI as the All Whites chase a spot in Russia. Why the sale of the Warriors fell through By DaviD Skipwith Warriors owner Eric Watson is not budging on price, while flaws in the Auckland Rugby League’s funding model have also contributed to the potential sale of the NRL club falling over. The Herald understands negotiations between the two parties broke down this week, after the ARL were unable to secure the three corporate partners needed to bring them within range of Watson’s asking price which is understood to be close to $20 million. The ARL want to buy a 55 per cent majority share in the Penrose-based club and were looking for three backers to each take a 15 per cent stake for an investment

of between $2 and $3 million. Neither party are willing to clarify why negotiations halted, when a deal looked imminent after it was reported last month that both parties had agreed on a price, while working through the due diligence process. However, it’s believed problems arose when the ARL failed to amass the required amount after struggling to find minority investors that share their vision of using club profits to rejuvenate and grow grassroots rugby league in the Auckland region. It’s understood the ARL had three potential backers in line but at least one dropped out to leave them short on the money required to complete the purchase. Plans to establish and fund a

semi-professional second-tier local competition and enhance and improve junior development pathways would be easier to fulfil if the ARL owned the Warriors outright, but are proving a hard sell to small partners expecting to gain some financial reward from their investment. And while some investors might be willing to pass up monthly or yearly returns in the knowledge they could enjoy a windfall by selling the club in the future, it’s unlikely that scenario would eventuate if the ARL were to take control of the Warriors. Watson remains in no rush to sell and is refusing to drop his price knowing the club is virtually assured of turning a healthy profit in the next few years - particu-

larly under the NRL’s new funding model that provides clubs with an extra $3 million annually from next season. Despite the ongoing uncertainty the club is continuing its dayto-day business and still looking to sign players for next season and beyond. However, it’s believed plans to revamp the club’s football department have been delayed, after the ARL began exploring their own ideas around potential staff structure and appointments. Watson continues to talk to other interested buyers and it remains to be seen whether a new prospective owner will emerge, while the ARL remain hopeful they might be able to re-open talks again at some point. - NZME

After being left with a case of wondering what might have been a few hours earlier, Ashburton owners Alan and Ian Neumann ended Cup Day on the right note when The Brooklyn Brawler fought his way to success in the last race of the day. The three-year-old pacer was on the emergency list for the $170,000 Sires Stakes Final earlier on in the day and the Neumann boys could only watch on as Chase Auckland won the final from the very spot in which their horse would have been. “We needed that scratching to get in, I know, but we would have been on King Of Swing’s back throughout, just like Chase Auckland was,” Alan said. “We might not have won, but we would have been right up there with them because he’s such a good stayer I think.” That took a bit to watch, but the disappointment was quickly wiped out when The Brooklyn Brawler sat parked outside Bettor Trix, blew her away at the top of

Under section 41 of the B+LNZ constitution, two electoral district directors will retire by rotation at the annual meeting. This year, Phil Smith (Northern South Island) and James Parsons (Northern North Island) must retire by rotation, but may stand for re-election. Nominations are being called to fill two Board of Director vacancies, one for each of the following electoral districts: NorthernNorth Island (NNI) Northern South Island (NSI) This year there is also an election for the Directors Independent Remuneration Committee (DIRC). Nominations are now called to fill one vacancy on the DIRC. Derrick Millton, an existing member of the DIRC, will retire by rotation, and has indicated that he will seek re-election. Written remits for the 2018 Annual Meeting are now being accepted. Remits that, if passed at B+LNZ’s annual meeting would not be binding on the organisation, require the signatures of 10 farmers, who are registered on the B+LNZ electoral roll. Remits that, if passed at the annual meeting, would be binding on B+LNZ, require the signatures of at least 1,000 registered farmers or five percent of the total number of registered farmers, whichever is the lesser. A weak surface trough to the west of the North Island is drifting southwards while a ridge of high pressure covers much of the country. A cold front is moving northeastward and should be close to the south of the South Island tonight.

Sport Young ﬁred up Kiwi rally duo Mike Young and Malcolm Read are ready to tackle the prestigious Rally Australia, the final round of the World Rally Championship (WRC), this weekend after test driving their Citroën DS3 R3 for the first time yesterday. Even though Young hadn’t driven the car until Monday, he is determined to push for a good result after a successful testing session on roads around Coffs Harbour where the event is based. The car is a front wheel and left-hand drive car a setup he is familiar and feels confident with.

Perry plays part in nail-biter Mid Canterbury’s Tim Perry made his first start for the All Blacks in a nail-biting mid-week match against the France XV yesterday. The All Blacks won 28-23, but were made to work for the victory, and trailed by one-point at halftime. Despite the game being held during the middle of the week, a 60,000 strong crowd gathered in Lyon to watch the closest a game of rugby can be to a test match without being a test match. Contrasting approaches were evident. While the French took shots at goal to pursue victory, the All Blacks turned down points to chase tries. That was until the final 15 minutes, when the heat really came on and tables turned as France went into full comeback mode. Locals were in full voice throughout. They sniffed an upset. The French led by one at halftime but it looked as though tries from Patrick Tuipulotu and Ngani Laumape, two of the All

Blacks’ best, had pushed them clear. But the French kept coming. Under huge pressure, with 10 minutes left and 10 points the difference, Dominic Bird pinched a crucial lineout steal on the All Blacks’ line after Jack Goodhue received his yellow card. Replacement French first fiveeighth Jules Plisson missed a late conversion to bring them within three in the closing stages. The All Blacks then desperately defended their line, and produced one huge final scrum to seal victory – Goodhue kicking the ball into touch. It was as tense as can be; the final score a reflection of an epic battle. For the most part, midfield pairing Goodhue and Laumape, involved twice in the lead up to Matt Duffie’s first try at this level, were excellent. They carried strongly and, on the whole, made great decisions to give a preview of the future. Laumape

got it wrong once, with his cutout ball snaffled for a runaway try against the run of play. And other than his card Goodhue shone. Liam Squire, in his 52 minute stint after returning from illness, was immense. Richie Mo’unga looked at home off the bench, and captain Luke Whitelock was busy. The French came hard. They targeted the All Blacks through the lineout drive and, like many have this year, up the middle of the ruck. The All Blacks did well to survive the initial onslaught – repelling several drives, as they did throughout, and gaining one tighthead from a scrum close to their line. Blacks sought. Continuity and patience after a breakout from their 22 came with reward. But they weren’t always so in control or fluid. Tawera Kerr-Barlow, in probably his final outing for the All Blacks, tackled everything in sight and other than one try was composed from the base. He and Lima Sopoaga did their best to take the right options and direct play, but the French made life difficult by attacking the breakdown and rushing the midfield. On defence, Squire was punishing and Tuipulotu knocked out French No.8 Marco Tauleigne with one huge hit. What a valuable lesson this will be for a young and inexperienced team, many of whom are sure to feature again.

Michael Venus is starting to believe he and American partner Ryan Harrison can win the prestigious ATP Finals in London. The French Open champions have become the first team to qualify for the semi-finals after beating the 6th seeded French pair of Pierre Hugues-Herbert and Nicolas Mahut 6-7 (7-4) 6-4, 10-5 for their second straight round robin win. Venus and Harrison have eliminated winless US Open champions Jean Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau who they meet in their final group match on Friday morning.

Meninga hailed Mal Meninga has been hailed as arguably the greatest Kangaroos coach after becoming the first Australian coach to win his first 10 test matches. Saturday’s win over Lebanon means Meninga’s side remains unbeaten since he took over from Tim Sheens almost two years ago. Former coaches Chris Anderson, Bob Fulton and Ricky Stuart won nine of their opening 10 tests, while Wayne Bennett, Reg Gasnier and Sheens had eight victories.
