Hosting future ANZ Netball Championship matches could be on the cards for the EA Networks Centre stadium.

Last week the stadium hosted the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Netball Championships for the first time, an event that was hailed a success by all involved.

The tournament was one of the first big ticket items to take place at the complex and centre manager Steve Prescott said the experience meant the facility was well placed for future events.

“We can move onwards and up-

wards, and the next one will be bigger, brighter and better,” he said at the time.

“We’ve got a good understanding of what we need to do to make sure it’s a roaring success.”

Now, Netball Mainland has come to the party saying the EA Networks Centre has the ability to host even larger events, such as the ANZ Championships.

Netball Mainland CEO Brigit Hearn said she made a point of checking out last week’s action and was pleased with what she saw.

“We’re really excited about the incredible facility that has been built and supported by the Ashburton

community and we would certainly consider this as a potential venue for future games,” she told the Guardian yesterday.

“It has shown that it is able to host Netball New Zealand events which is fantastic, the next step is around ANZ Champs,” Ms Hearn said.

Exactly how many games Ashburton might host is yet to be known.

Based on next year’s ANZ Championship schedule, towns and cities can hold anywhere between one and seven matches.

Prince Charles to visit Coast Prince Charles will make his first visit to Westport next month.

Charles will inspect the large-scale military exercise, Operation Southern Katipo, attend a civic reception at the Clocktower Chambers, and visit the West Coast Brewery, on the afternoon of November 7. His wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, will not accompany him. The couple will be in New Zealand from November 4-10, following a visit to Australia. They will go to Wellington, Dunedin, Nelson, Westport, Ngaruawahia, New Plymouth and Auckland. Buller Mayor Garry Howard said the royal visit had been in the works for a month. Old film set revealed A 1980s Hollywood film set, abandoned for years on a windswept Queenstown hilltop, has been captured in a series of striking photographs by a group of notorious urban explorers. Walt Disney filmed teenage adventure blockbuster The Rescue on various locations around New Zealand in the mid-80s. The story tells of five kids who infiltrate a North Korean prison to rescue their captive Navy Seal fathers. For the key backdrop, moviemakers spent a reported $1 million constructing a replica North Korean jail.

Now, almost 30 years after the film’s release, to mixed reviews, the set remains abandoned. Derelict, graffititagged, and surrounded by high barbed-wire fences, the makeshift prison has not been seen by the general public for years, with the road to Deer Park Heights, near Queenstown, shut off. The photographs were taken by radical urban explorers, Urbex Central and posted to their website.

US presidential hopeful Donald Trump has agreed to stop using Aerosmith’s Dream On as a rally anthem. Trump’s decision to stop using the song on his campaign trail came after he received a cease-and-desist notice from the lawyer of Aerosmith’s frontman Steven Tyler. The business tycoon and reality TV star has been friends with Tyler for years, but the singer objected to having his band’s 1970s ballad played as Trump’s walk out song at political events. A baby chimpanzee who survived after his mother died giving birth has made his public debut. Boon, whose name means “blessing”, was orphaned when mum Soona died shortly after he was born at Monarto Zoo, southeast of Adelaide, late last week. But in a heartwarming twist, the “strong” and “healthy” baby boy was immediately adopted by fellow expectant mum, Zombi. “It’s unheard of to see a heavily pregnant chimpanzee adopt an orphaned newborn infant,” Monarto Zoo senior primate keeper Laura Hanley said.

“From the minute she first cradled the newborn, she’s been amazing – grooming, supporting and nursing the little man as though he was her own. “Zombi’s a confident and capable mum ... New notes on TradeMe An enterprising entrepreneur is hoping to make money by auctioning off the new $10 banknotes not yet in circulation. New Zealand’s new $5 and $10 banknotes are in public circulation from Monday. But, one TradeMe auctioneer is looking to cash in on the new $10 note now. The seller, whose Trade Me username is ‘mudeki’, has a pair of the notes featuring Kate Sheppard. It has prompted many questions over why someone would want to pay more than its face value. “This note is in uncirculated condition and has no creases from a teller counting it or scratches from automatic counting machines,” the seller replies to the first question. “A number if [sic] banks are reporting they can’t weigh the notes correctly so are flicking through them leaving marks that collectors will not want ... Also not all buyers on trademe are in New Zealand so this may be an option for them to purchase.” The auction closed last night.

EA Networks a big dollar earner

Ashburton’s EA Networks Centre has the potential to become a multi-million dollar revenue earner for the Ashburton District says tourism boss Bruce Moffat.

Last week’s New Zealand Secondary Schools’ netball tournament pumped more than $500,000 into the local economy and shows how an investment in a major sports facility can repay a community in visitor spending, the Experience Mid Canterbury chief executive said.

The tournament attracted 16 teams of 10 players and each came with dozens of supporters

and officials.

Using the industry standard of a spend of at least $200 per person per day on accommodation, food and general expenses, the event would have generated well over $500,000, Mr Moffat said.

“EA Networks is huge as a revenue earner, it has so many options. It’s money well spent by the community and it’ll reap benefits big time. It’s got everything – and more.”

And no one is happier about the outcome of the first big test of the centre’s court space than sports facilities manager Steve Prescott.

While the event was a good

learning experience for stadium staff, feedback from officials and players had been fantastic he said.

“We know there are things to improve on, things to change from the feedback. The general consensus was that it’s a great venue and there was a great vibe about the place.”

In the days since the tournament, there had already been interest from several sporting codes in holding other key events. Some of those would come with requests for specific equipment or facilities, but most of those could be provided or accommodated with a bit of advance notice, Mr Prescott said.

“If we’re told things are needed then we can make sure they’re in place.”

Two funding grant applications are already in place for concertina seating that could see up to 1500 people able to view key matches and this would clear a major obstacle to holding some events, he said.

Not only were inquiries coming in from around New Zealand about event hosting, they were also ramping up locally too, Mr Prescott.

While it was too early to suggest the covered court area needed to be extended, that day could be much closer than originally anticipated for local sport.

Six covered courts would also put Ashburton’s stadium at the top of the list when it came to hosting major national events, he said.

The EA Networks Centre was built with the future in mind, said Warren and Mahoney architect Alex Head.

“We made it to be extended – in both directions. Costing that is an exercise we could do relatively easily if someone at council wanted this done,” he said.

The cost of an extension was difficult to gauge, but a ballpark figure could be around $4 million, Mr Head said.

“It’s just brilliant to hear it’s going so well.”

There is 12 months to go before the next local body elections, but Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay wants you to vote now.

Mr McKay is not seeking votes for himself, however.

Rather he is asking Mid Cantabrians to go on-line and click the tab underneath Ashburton’s own black billed gull in the 2015 Bird of the Year competition.

The gull could do with some help, having received only 23 votes as of yesterday afternoon, compared to the bar tailed godwit in the lead with over 400 votes.

The black billed gull is the world’s rarest gull, unique to New Zealand, with one of its main nesting sites right in the middle of the town, in the Ashburton River bed below State Highway One. This time of year is a crucial one, as the birds begin to congregate in the area and build their nests. Currently about 4000 of the birds have gathered at the location, with more beginning to arrive.

While many confuse the bird, which has the same critically endangered status as the takahe, with the common sea gull and black backed gull, Mr McKay believes their black bills and markings make them stand out.

“They look absolutely different, this is a beautiful bird,” Mr McKay said.

“I believe we should encourage everyone in New Zealand to vote for that bird as Bird of the Year.”

ing at the colony site yesterday as an area which had been cleared of weeds by volunteers at the weekend was starting to have birds congregate there.

This year had been a bad one for weeds at the site.

Mrs Smith advised people to stay off the riverbed in order to avoid disturbing the colony, and anyone wishing to view them could do so from the State Highway One bridge, ideally with binoculars.

However, while the stadium meets the requirements in terms of design for Netball New Zealand events, broadcast elements including seating, lighting and camera angles would need to be implemented.

“That would be something that needed to be worked through, it’s early days yet but we always try to take netball to the reaches of our zone,” Ms Hearn said.

The standard seating capacity for an ANZ series game is around 1500, but Ms Hearn said that could be dropped to around 1100 for smaller games.

Mr Prescott said that would be no problem for the EA Networks Centre, who could easily source additional temporary seating.

Netball New Zealand were unavailable for comment yesterday on the potential of national-level games being held in the district.

Mid Canterbury Netball were tight lipped about the potential of any national games coming the district’s way but administrator Aimee Rickard is urging the public to “watch this space”.

The trial for two teenagers accused of the murder of a man in an Auckland motel looks set to be pushed back to next year.

Beauen Wallace-Loretz, 17 and Leonard Nattrass-Berquist, 17, allegedly murdered 54-year-old Ihaia Gillman-Harris on December 27 last year at Auckland’s Ascot Epsom Motel. Their trial was scheduled to go ahead next month but after a hearing before the High Court at Auckland yesterday, Justice Graham Lang ruled it could not proceed. The move from the current civic building to the building that until recently housed the district’s art gallery and museum, was made to allow the council meeting chamber to be turned into staff office space.

Council assets manager James Webb has masterminded the double relocation of staff from the council’s old villa into the old council chamber and of the trappings of council meetings into a new meeting space.

The whole exercise came with a price tag of $220,000, Mr Webb said, and that was achieved by “a lot of making good” of whatever was reusable in either building.

Their council meeting on October 29 will see councillors back in the place where the business of the county was carried out for more than a century.

The Baring Square building that has become the district’s temporary council chamber is on the site where Ashburton county councillors met until the county and borough councils amalgamated in 1989.

A police dive squad deployed into Auckland Harbour yesterday to search for a missing 20-yearold student who was last seen in a Viaduct nightclub on Sunday morning. Mandeep Singh, a culinary arts student from India, went clubbing with three flatmates in the early hours of Sunday morning before they lost contact with him in the Bungalow 8 nightclub at Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour about 3am. He has not been seen since. Auckland City Police confirmed yesterday the dive squad had been deployed.

Police thanked the public and media for their assistance in the case, which has led police to follow up new lines of inquiry.

Mayor Angus McKay took a test drive of the new set-up from his official mayoral chair and was impressed with the way the elderly building had been fitted out for modern use.

Whether the building is retained for use by councillors or council staff in the future will be determined when decisions are made on a new civic centre and library for the district.

Rural groups have been the big winners in the latest hand out of the Ashburton District Council’s community grants.

The council has given a boost to 31 groups in its latest community and school holiday grants funding round, with the McClimonts Green Development Committee, receiving $5000 to assist with its planned information station at the Mount Somers Village Green.

This village green was previously railway reserve and was bought by the Mt Somers community about 10 years ago.

It has since been landscaped and developed to reflect the area’s mining history.

Committee chairman John Chapman said the information station would com-

plete the development and would provide visitors with local information on topics such as accommodation, food and services; maps; details about tracks, huts and historical sites; and displays about the area’s history and geology.

“Thousands of hours went into that initial project and we had the generous support of local businesses and contractors who donated machinery and materials to help us achieve it,” he said.

The committee intended the information station to become a destination in its own right and it is scheduled for completion by the middle of next year.

“This project has embraced conservation, educational, artistic and heritage

values. It’s been an ambitious effort for a small community, but a rewarding one.

We are well on the way with this final part. Our architect has prepared an exciting design and a substantial part of the fundraising is in hand.”

The Staveley Hall Society has also been given a boost with a $2000 grant for new bifold doors in the foyer of its district hall. The hall is open every day to the public to allow customers using the Staveley Store to access its toilet facilities.

In total $50,000 was shared between 26 community groups and $4600 between five groups that run school holiday programmes.

Signs may be thing of the past

Give way and stop signs could be a thing of the past in Ashburton if the district’s top roading engineer has his way.

Ashburton District Council contracts manager Brian Fauth is keen to see the council explore a traffic management trend that is becoming well used in many countries, where drivers slow down and follow road rules at intersections, rather than letting road signage dictate their behaviour.

Commenting on a call by transport expert Dr Glen Koorey to reduce urban speed limits below 50 kilometres per hour, Mr Fauth said he had divided feelings on those limits and believed there were better ways to achieve motoring safety.

“In some instances I’d say 50km is too slow but in others it would be better to slow traffic down a little more,” Mr Fauth said.

He cited two areas where speeds could be lifted to 60km/h – State Highway One into Ash-

burton from the north to Walnut Avenue and from the south to the Ashburton River bridge.

Residential streets, however, could benefit from lower speed limits, Mr Fauth said, but this could be achieved by traffic calming measures such as street narrowing at the entrance to a residential street from a feeder road.

“A speed limit of 40 kilometres might be sensible in a residential area but you have to ask, do you need a speed limit, you should drive to the conditions

and the environment.”

Controlling speeds and creating safe intersections should not rely on stop or give way signs, he said.

“If there are no controls, you know you can’t just drive through an intersection because there’s a sign, you have to slow up and think.”

Timaru was already moving down the line of removing controls at intersections as opposed to putting new controls in.

to residential streets, Mr Fauth said.

And he’s keen to see the Ashburton council follow suit.

“Where we can, we’d pull signage out rather than put more in, plus if I had the budget I’d be looking at some kind of break or reference that says very clearly you’re entering a residential area.”

The change in thinking around intersection controls was slow, but there was evidence that the new way worked, Mr Fauth said.

Generosity benefits local groups

Two local organisations have benefited thanks to the generosity of the Ashburton Masonic Lodge members.

At an open night on Tuesday, the lodge presented the Salvation Army Food Bank and Ashburton’s Budget Advisory Service with a donation.

The lodge’s junior warden Luke Sutton said the money was raised by individual mem-

bers and topped up by the charity account.

The Salvation Army Food Bank was given $750 worth of food to help stock its shelves.

Food bank manager Judith Lilley said the “fantastic” gesture was much appreciated.

“It was fantastic, it’s really great, it’s going to enable us to assist families more.”

Earlier this year the Salvation Army put out the call for help and the Ashburton community rallied, filling the depleted

shelves of the charity’s food bank in two short weeks.

Mrs Lilley said the food bank still had a “good lot” of food coming in, but towards the end of each week supplies were dwindling.

Due to the large volume of food donated by the lodge, Mrs Lilley and a food bank volunteer spent the majority of yesterday afternoon stacking the food bank’s shelves.

The Ashburton Budget Advisory Service also benefited

from the lodge’s kindness.

One thousand dollars was donated to the local service, but chairwoman Kay Begg said it was not yet known exactly where the money would go.

Mrs Begg said the board would discuss how the money would be used at a meeting next week, but the donation was much appreciated.

“We are always grateful of any community organisation who are willing to support us,” she said.

Ban lifted A ban on Auckland schoolteacher Ted Dawe’s controversial teen novel Into the River has been lifted by the New Zealand Film and Literature Board. In a majority decision released yesterday, the board said it no longer considers a ban on under-14s justifiable.

Six-year-old dog attack victim in stable condition A 6-year-old Bay of Plenty boy who received life-threatening injuries when he was viciously attacked by a relative’s dog is now in a stable condition.

Aftershocks continued to rattle the lower North Island, with a magnitude 4.3 quake hitting yesterday. GeoNet said aftershocks could be expected for weeks following the magnitude 5.8 quake that struck on Monday night. Fire victim mourns beloved cat

Tasha Morris lost everything – her home, her belongings and her beloved cat Patches – in a suspicious fire on Sunday.

But yesterday one of those things was restored after Housing New Zealand (HNZ) found her a new place to live.

Her HNZ Trevors Road home was nearly destroyed by a fire at 1.17am on Sunday, and is being investigated by police.

HNZ had previously confirmed they had no suitable properties to offer Ms Morris, who is staying with family.

However, yesterday a HNZ spokesman said a suitable prop-

erty had just become available and they hoped to be able to formally offer it to her next week following maintenance checks.

“I would like to think that she would be able to move in within a couple of weeks.

“We are really pleased that we have been able to give her a housing solution.’’

Although Ms Morris lost her home and everything in it, after hearing about the fire, her only concern was her five-year-old cat, who died from smoke inhalation.

“I am lost without my dear lovely cat Patches,’’ she said.

She would be getting a new home and would slowly be able

to accumulate new belongings but she would never be able to replace her “cheeky’’ cat.

Several children in the neighbourhood would frequently visit Ms Morris to play with Patches and she hoped to hold a ceremony with them to say goodbye to their feline friend.

Emergency services were alerted to the fire, which started in a bedroom, by a neighbour who woke to the sound of smoke alarms.

Ms Morris’ uncle, Dean Adams, said he would like to remind people of the importance of having smoke alarms and contents insurance because his niece did not have insurance and

lost everything. The traumatic incident had been very difficult for Ms Morris but her family was trying to help her as best as it could, he said.

“The family are supporting her and are there for her and we always will be.’’

Detective Sergeant Ashley Millen, of Ashburton, said they were continuing their investigation into the fire and several people had been in touch with information over the past few days.

Council satisfied with safety By dana Kinita Rotorua’s deputy mayor says the council is satisfied with the current safety measures in Kuirau Park, following the discovery of a body in a hot pool.

Police believe the body found on Tuesday was that of a local man.

A post-mortem examination was carried out yesterday in Auckland.

In a statement, police said they could not confirm the man’s identity until today at the earliest. They are treating it as an “unexplained death”, which will be referred to a cor-

oner. Emergency service crews took more than three hours to recover the body after the alarm was raised by a tourist.

Deputy mayor Dave Donaldson said there was “extensive” signage in place warning the public of the dangers of the geothermal pools.

This included signs in the car park areas advising visitors to walk on the safety tracks.

“All of the hot pools are fenced off with balustrade fencing and are regularly checked,” Mr Donaldson said.

“Twice weekly there is a thermal pool check and every two weeks staff carry out a

structural check on all fences,” he said.

Any issues were fixed immediately or if they could not be repaired straight away were cordoned off with high visibility tape and signs, he said.

During events in the park the areas are monitored twice a day.

“Regarding further evaluations of those standards, council are co-operating with the police and coroner’s inquiry and serious consideration will be given to any recommendations that may emanate from that process.”

As Alex Fisher’s older brother stood in the courtroom dock, he stole a glance at five family members sitting in the public gallery.

He stared for a few moments, and some of them started back, but no other interaction took place as the lifting of suppression orders revealed the identity of the man arrested in connection with 10-year-old Alex’s disappearance.

Eric Baden McIsaac, 25, wore prison-issue clothing and was flanked by two police officers during his brief appearance in the Levin District Court yesterday.

There was also a heavy police presence in the back of the courtroom.

McIsaac entered no pleas to a charge laid last week of unlawful possession of a knife in a public place on October 6, and two charges laid yesterday.

One of those charges is suppressed, although it can be reported that it is relatively minor, while another is of the burglary of a Waitarere Beach property on Park Avenue.

Police have said they are investigating any possible links between it and Alex’s death.

His body was found on Thursday last week after a three-day search and police have publicly appealed for sightings of him and McIsaac on Sunday or Monday last week, together or by themselves.

Police have also released CCTV footage showing the pair together on Monday night last week.

Court documents allege the burglary happened between September 26 and October 6 at a property that is not occupied all the time.

The 57sq m one-storey house, built in 1948, changed hands in June and its new owners live in Palmerston North.

Last night one owner confirmed she was aware of the police inquiry but said officers had instructed her not to talk about it.

McIsaac was silent throughout the hearing, simply shaking his head when Judge Gregory Ross asked him if he wanted to speak.

McIsaac did not apply for bail and will stay in custody until his next appearance next month.

Judge Ross ordered a mental health assessment report to be completed before then.

The burglary charge is the most serious McIsaac faces and if convicted of that he could spend up to 10 years in jail.

He is next week due to face a fourth charge of driving while forbidden on September 8.

Yesterday police said a homicide investigation - Operation Waitarere - was continuing.

“On Sunday we announced that we were looking at a burglary which took place at a property in Waitarere. We are working to establish any links between that burglary and the death of Alex Fisher,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Neil Forlong.

“The investigation team remains very focused on the enquiry and we continue to assess a range of information and forensic evidence.”

In brief Landslide toll rises Guatemala has called off a search for dozens of people still missing in a landslide that killed at least 280 people. Around 70 people are unaccounted for, believed to be buried in the mud and rubble that wiped out a neighbourhood in Santa Catarina Pinula, just outside of Guatemala City, on October 1.

“We’ve unanimously agreed to suspend the search and recovery efforts,” Alejandro Maldonado, head of the country’s disaster co-ordination agency Conred, said. The agency said 184 homes were damaged, with 73 of them seriously.

Tragedy blamed on Russia missile

By LLoyd Jones Dutch investigators have confirmed a Russian-made missile brought down Malaysia Airlines flight 17 but also criticised Ukraine for failing to close the airspace above a war zone.

Thirty-eight Australian citizens and residents were among the 298 people killed when the Boeing 777 was blown out of the sky on a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on July 17 last year.

Following a 15-month investigation the Dutch Safety Board released its final report into the disaster yesterday at an air base in the southern Netherlands.

In a large hall at the base, air crash investigators unveiled a partial reconstruction of the plane’s cockpit and business class section out of wreckage

retrieved from Ukraine.

Torn and pitted pieces of the fuselage in the red, white and blue colours of the airline were pinned to a metal frame in the shape of the plane, with windows and the Malaysian flag emblem intact.

The mangled cockpit area held three crumpled metal seats where investigators say the crew were killed instantly when a missile warhead detonated just outside, sending deadly projectiles into the front of the plane.

The cockpit was torn from the rest of the plane which then broke up, the central portion crashing upside down before catching fire on the ground.

Dutch Safety Board chairman Tjibbe Joustra confirmed that a Russian-brand of missile fired from the war zone had brought

down the plane, with pieces of the missile recovered from the crash site.

“This warhead fits the kind of missile that is installed in the BUK surface-to-air missile system.”

Mr Joustra criticised Ukraine and other authorities for a failure to recognise the risk of flying in that airspace.

He revealed that 160 commercial flights had overflown the area on the day of the crash despite at least 16 Ukrainian military planes and helicopters being shot down in the area over previous weeks.

“Nobody thought that civil aviation was at risk.

“There was sufficient reason to close the airspace as a precaution. The Ukrainian authorities failed to do so,” Mr Joustra said.

The report recommended that stricter rules should be applied by international aviation bodies to ensure countries involved in conflict closed endangered airspace in a timely manner.

The report marked out a 320-square-kilometre area in the war zone from where the missile might have been fired but did not specify whether it came from an area under rebel or Ukrainian military control.

Kiev and the West have accused pro-Russian rebels of shooting down the plane with a missile supplied by Russia but Moscow and the rebels deny any responsibility and point the finger at Ukraine’s military.

Both the Russian and Ukrainian militaries have BUK missiles in their arsenals.

Croc removed from Queensland golf course A crocodile has been removed from a far north Queensland country club after getting a bit too close and personal with golfers.

The 3.6 metre croc was removed from the Mirage resort golf course at Port Douglas yesterday after it started getting too close to guests.

The Mirage Country Club’s general manager Peter Douglas says numerous crocodiles come and go from the course as they please.

But two, including the one trapped on Tuesday night, had become permanent residents.

Two traps will remain in the area to catch the other slightly

bigger croc on the course.

“These two were so comfortable and so relaxed,” Mr Douglas said.

“They sat out on the grass and I was afraid that guests may be in danger.”

The captured crocodile will get a health check before being offered to a registered crocodile

farm or zoo. Mr Douglas said the animals had never been aggressive but rangers believed they should be removed as a precaution.

Wildlife officers will continue to monitor the crocodiles at the golf course over the coming week.

A US jury has found that chips powering coveted Apple mobile devices infringe on technology patented by Wisconsin University researchers. The case is to proceed to liability and damages phases that could end with the California-based technology giant being hit with a tab in the hundreds of millions of dollars, according to court documents.

The case brought by the nonprofit Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation charged that Apple built into its A7 chips technology patented in 1998 for improving efficiency and performance of microprocessors.

710,000 migrants EU border agency Frontex says 710,000 migrants entered the European Union in the first nine months of this year, compared to only 282,000 in all of 2014. The Warsaw-based agency released the latest figures yesterday, a day after the UN refugee agency said the EU’s new relocation scheme for refugees fleeing conflict and poverty is “not enough” to address the scope of the problem. “The total number of migrants who crossed the EU’s external borders in the first nine months of this year rose to more than 710,000 with the Greek islands on the Aegean continuing to be the most affected by the unprecedented inflow of people,” Frontex said.

Twin panda cubs The first ever giant panda cubs born in Canada have been announced by the Toronto zoo. Er Shun, one of two pandas on loan to the zoo from China, gave birth on Tuesday to twins weighing just 187.7 and 115 grams. Pandas are born blind and are only the size of a stick of butter. The cubs, which are 1/900th the size of their mother, are pink in colour with short, sparse white fur. Zoo staff said Er Shun has demonstrated “excellent maternal instincts and began cleaning and cradling the first cub soon after its birth.” The two newborns, however, are very vulnerable and the coming days will be “critical to their survival.”

Slim surplus a break in the clouds Stu Oldham

I

t was wafer thin but it was more than enough to dine out on in a political progressive banquet that might get worse before it gets better.

The government confirmed its first operating surplus since National won power in 2008 but stopped well short of promising a string of better – or even similar – surpluses into the future.

The $414 million surplus was better than the deficit projected last year but still significantly less than the $1.3 billion surplus the previous, optimistic National-led government forecast way back in 2011.

Then, the country was emerging from the worst effects of the global financial crisis and the Canterbury rebuild looked set to help build upon the economy.

The rebuild did its part as global demand for New Zealand commodities such as Mid Canterbury milk, meat and seed helped push the government’s books toward the black.

But the return to surplus does not mark a triumphant return to positive territory for the government ledger. If anything, it hints at opportunities missed.

Hindsight – even now – will tell us the government’s tax-buoyed budgets have not enjoyed the fruits of a remarkable period of growth as much as they could have.

Plenty of our exports achieved historic price highs over many of the past four years while the relative stability of our economy attracted plenty of new money.

It was a period of growth that, after years of graft, led to a tiny surplus. Now, some exports look to a future of moderate gains, uber-export dairy looks to rebuild, and gross debt is as high as it was in the 1970s.

Finance Minister Bill English will want to keep all this in check as he plans for the prospect of slower growth and an international environment where trading partners are often worse off than us.

His wafer-thin surplus came when he hoped it would, but future gains may be even harder to win.

Poverty? It’s so wrong Y

ears ago my parents used to explain the World Vision ads on television about starving children in Africa and how lucky we are in New Zealand.

Our family weren’t rich but we always had food and clothing. Mum and dad worked and we had camping holidays in tents – simple but great fun.

So the other night I was surprised to see the KidsCan campaign requesting sponsorship of a child – not in Ethiopia, but here, in New Zealand!

How can this be? Is our situation really that bad that we need KidsCan to exist in this country?

Apparently so, for according to their website, 260,000 children in New Zealand live in poverty. Now that seems just wrong to me.

I believe this country is first world and our education system is one of the best public money can provide, so how have we ended up with so many children in dire circumstances?

Surely this figure is wrong or the current and recent systems we have are not working.

KidsCan works in over 500 low decile schools to provide food, clothing and basic health care.

They are currently promoting a sponsorship programme of 50 cents a day to provide these basics for one Kiwi kid a year.

Using the calculator this works out to be $182.50 a year per child or $47,450,000 to sponsor all 260,000 children.

Mmmmm me thinks paying for a panda and a new flag could be better spent.

But simple sponsorship is really the band aid. What is causing the impoverished situa-

tion New Zealand children find themselves in?

One of the factors that must be considered is education.

How have we, as a nation, ensured our children are educated to a level that means they can support themselves and their families?

Major social issues like poverty are created over time and therefore solutions will take time to reduce this issue.

As educators we have often worked disconnected from businesses, other government agencies and social organisations.

We are constantly under pressure as schools to fit more into the daily programme, and so any new initiative would be met with reserved enthusiasm.

Schools alone cannot fix major issues like poverty, but can work with others to improve the outcomes for children.

Currently our school has expressed an interest in the Community of Schools Initiative. This is focused on student achievement and while the

details are to be negotiated, the fundamental idea that we, as local schools, should work more closely together is supported by many boards of trustees.

This idea originally sparked opposition from schools and teachers but clearer thinking and working with the Ministry of Education has resulted in a blueprint that everyone has agreed upon.

Perhaps this could be the blueprint for all groups that work with children and families. We could drop the title of Community of Schools and just call it Community.

Surely a community that works together to improve the lives of the most vulnerable is not impoverished.

Fonterra’s rating downgraded

BY JAMIE GRAY Standard and Poor’s has downgraded Fonterra’s credit rating from ‘A’ to ‘A minus’, reflecting the agency’s concerns about the co-operative’s dairy giant’s debt levels.

The move, which comes after Fonterra was placed on negative “creditwatch” by S&P in August, means Fonterra will face higher borrowing costs.

The downgrade reflected S&P’s view that Fonterra’s risk profile had weakened in the past two year, as the company’s peak capital expenditure and a sizeable debt funded acquisition – the purchase of a stake in China’s Beingmate – coincided with a high level of volatility in the global dairy market.

S&P credit analyst Brenda Wardlaw said Fonterra had a high degree of financial flexibility in setting milk price forecasts, which underpinned the ‘A’ category rating on the group.

“However, we note that loan payments will be phased as savings from the co-operative’s transformation programme are delivered,” Wardlaw said.

“Notwithstanding the lower rating, we acknowledge that the recent increase in global dairy prices, together with reducing capital expenditure, better working capital flows, and likely transformation benefits should meaningfully improve the group’s financial risk profile in the next one-to-two years,” she said.

Downward pressure on the rating could occur if Fonterra were to undertake further material debt-funded transactions, particularly in higher-risk geographies that alter the supply mix and that may also undermine the subordination benefit.

Fonterra this year introduced a scheme whereby shareholders have been apply for a soft loan of additional 50 cents per share-backed kilogram of milk solids for production through to December. More than 7000 applications, representing 70 per cent of farmer shareholders, were received by the cut-off date.

BY CLAIRE TREVETT The Government has pulled off its promised surplus for the 2014/15 year after Crown accounts released yesterday confirmed a $414 million surplus a turnaround from the forecast deficit in May’s Budget.

It is the National Government’s first surplus since coming into power in 2008 during the global financial crisis. Since 2011, National has campaigned on returning to surplus in the 2014/15 year. Yesterday’s news will come as a relief after the Budget forecast a $684 million deficit for the year.

However, Mr English was reticent when asked if he expected to deliver another surplus in the year ahead, pointing to the low inflation, low

growth environment. The final accounts for the year to the end of June showed the Government was in surplus as a result of higher than expected tax revenue and lower than forecast Government spending. Core Crown tax revenue was $5.1 billion more than the previous year while Government spending was up by $1.2 billion – less than expected. The OBEGAL (operating balance before gains and losses) was $414 million.

Finance Minister Bill English said it was a “significant milestone” as the surplus had been the Government’s top fiscal priority since 2011.

It reversed a $18.4 billion deficit following the global financial crisis and Canterbury earthquakes.

He put that down to “careful

stewardship” over the Government’s day-to-day expenses – a process that has included significant trimming down of the public service. He was still hopeful of delivering tax cuts after 2017 – but said the surplus would not result in a celebratory spending splurge. Instead, the Government’s focus would be on reducing debt to below 20 per cent of GDP by 2020.

“That is the most prudent approach to take in a still uncertain global environment.”

The financial statements showed total Crown revenue was $95 billion – of which $66.6 billion was tax revenue.

Tax to hit NZ travellers’ pockets The Government’s new travel tax is to come in on January 1, adding $21.57 to the price of a round trip airfare to and from this country.

The announcement of the rate of the tax – imposed to cover border clearance costs _ drew sharp criticism from the tourism industry, which said it would put visitors off and was an unwelcome handbrake on successful efforts to grow the number of overseas visitors.

A rate of $26.22 for a cruise ship passenger was also announced by Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy and Cus-

toms Minister Nicky Wagner.

They said the higher rate for cruise passengers reflected the additional biosecurity assessments required at ports.

“In the past these costs have been met by taxpayers,” said the ministers.

“The Government considers it is fairer for the costs to fall on passengers travelling internationally.”

The ministers said the levy would cover the border clearance costs for volumes of passengers rising at 3.5 per cent to 4 per cent a year.

However, Tourism Indus-

try Association chief executive Chris Roberts said the tax ignored a long-held understanding that border services were a public good and should therefore come from general taxation.

He said the industry had urged the Government to put off introduction until at least 2017 in order to fully understand its impact.

Australia and some other countries have strict requirements for fully inclusive price advertising and unfortunately, brochures were already out for air and sea travel to New Zealand.

Group set to lift beef price

While the coming lamb season prices will be much of the same for Alliance Group, beef is expected to increase by 10 per cent.

At the recent roadshow meeting in Ashburton, the co-operative outlined expected prices for the coming season saying Christmas chilled lamb will sit at around $6 per kilogram up until November 10 and will drop over the season to between $5.30 and $5.40 per kilogram.

Sheep meat will remain steady at $3 per kilogram while venison will peak at $8.75 per kilogram but will drop in early November to around $7 once the frozen market kicks in until May next year when it will begin to track upwards again.

Chief executive David Surveyor outlined plans at the meeting to increase shareholder returns by between $0.58 and $0.80 cents per kilogram by 2018 including lowering operational costs.

Mr Surveyor explained how some costs could be significantly

reduced including ACC which has cost the co-operative $2 million in premiums per annum and $10 million overall per annum when plant closure and other aspects were taken into account after an injury occurs.

“We think we can make $85 million of savings to make our business better.”

Alliance has also guaranteed farmers a minimum $100 price for an 18kg lamb and launched its new loyalty payment scheme where shareholders who supply 100 per cent or one species of lamb would receive a $0.10 cents per kilogram premium.

Mr Surveyor said the meat giant wanted farmers to be fully shared up and would be taking $0.50 cents per kilogram of the kill sheet to enable that to happen.

“This is not to get cash into the business … it’s more about the principle that everybody has to commit.”

The Lincoln University dairy demonstration farm continues to perform well with the farm maintaining milk production levels with significantly fewer cows and decreasing farm working expenses.

Despite 11 per cent fewer cows, the demonstration farm managed to produce 46,059 kgMS compared to 46,877 kgMS in the 2013/14 season.

This result across the 542 herd was achieved with an average of 50 per cent less nitrogen fertiliser and 28 per cent less bought in silage.

Initially farm working expenses were projected to be $4 per kilogram of milksolids but this was reduced by $0.20 following the sharp decrease in milk price to $3.85.

The drop was primarily achieved by reducing maintenance fertiliser to half normal levels and stopping

all regressing apart from repairing any pasture damaged through early spring grazing.

The results showed it was possible to reduce bought in feed and bought in nitrogen fertiliser, if the stocking rate was also reduced appropriately to balance feed supply with feed demand.

■ ANOTHER GREAT RACE

Bentley v the train D

ares – at some stage or other most of us have made or accepted them.

Some as schoolyard pranks, others maybe as challenges at parties, most made for fun and with minimal consequence and most long since forgotten.

But just recently the Bentley Motor Company decided to recall and celebrate a dare which was made 85 years ago.

Woolf Barnato, heir to a vast South African mining fortune and one of the famous original ‘Bentley Boys’ had injected funds into Bentley and became the chairman of directors.

A brilliant sportsman, bon viveur and generous host, he was considered by W. O. Bentley to be the best of all the team’s drivers of the time, especially because of Barnato’s 100 per cent record at Le Mans – three wins in three starts.

Barnato was at a dinner party on board a yacht near Cannes in March 1930 when the subject of racing the famous Blue Train came up, as both Rover and Alvis had recently beaten the train from St Raphael to Calais.

Barnato wasn’t at all impressed, calling the achievement ‘no great shakes’.

He wagered £200 that at the wheel of his Speed Six he could beat the train to Calais with ease.

The dune train takes a 480km route from Riyadh – deep in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula – to Dammam on the Arabian Gulf.

The new Continental GT V8 S Convertible raced this unique locomotive on August 15 this year across the scorched, barren landscape and won, with six minutes to spare.

At the time of the challenge Saudi painting of Arabia was said to be the hottest place in the world.

Bentley Team MSport driver, Steven Kane, said: “Four hours is the same time as a stint at Le Mans.

“But this was far more stressful.

“The heat, the conditions, not knowing where the train was, and driving within the limits of the country’s regulations.

“It was a race like no other.

“I hope Barnato would be proud.”

No doubt he would be!

Bruce McIlroy, whose local company are renowned Bentley service agents, is delighted Bentley have remembered the historic feat.

For Bruce it’s a reminder that the company which has a proud history has not forgotten its past.

Bruce says these days the combination of fine craftsmanship, using skills that have been handed down through generations, alongside engineering expertise and cutting-edge technology enables Bentley to continue the tradition of building prestige wellequipped cars, perfectly capable of completing tough endurance challenges.

Some aspects of Barnato’s feat have become clouded in the mists of time, for example he may not have driven the car usually associated with the race, but rather another model Bentley.

And some versions of the story suggest the dinner where the idea was hatched took place at a different venue and there was in fact a wager.

But regardless the legend of the Bentley versus the Blue Train race in March 1930 remains one of the greatest stories in automotive history.

SILVER ANNIVERSARY

hey’ve had fun, welcomed many visitors to their club house, staged some truly magnificent bike shows, been generous community benefactors and most of all enjoyed a common bond of camaraderie and the love of motorbikes.

They are the Jokers, and all of a sudden their club has turned 25.

by English artist Terence Cuneo.

Many of Cuneo’s works include a small mouse (sometimes lifelike,

sometimes cartoon-like), which became his trademark.

They can be difficult to detect, and many people enjoy scouring his paintings to find one.

Even some of his portraits of

famous people contain a mouse, although legend has it one aristocrat demanded removal of the little creature from his picture because he didn’t want people to think his stately home hosted mice!

MGA’S VITAL STATISTICS

During the 1930 race Woolf Barnato had to cope with rugged roads and bad weather, while modern-day Bentley Boy Steven Kane faced some rather different obstacles.

fter speaking with Warwick Protheroe and reporting on the trip which he, Juliana and their Timaru friend Neil Manchester made to New Plymouth to join other enthusiasts celebrating the 60th anniversary of the MGA, we thought we would delve into the history of this delightful English sports car.

MG had thoughts about a new model as early as 1951.

Ultimately a prototype was produced and presented to the chairman of BMC who initially turned down the idea because just two weeks previously a deal had been made with Donald Healey to produce Austin Healey cars.

However declining sales of the traditional MG models prompted a change of heart and the new model which became known as the A – the first of a new line - was introduced to the world at the 1955 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The flowing running boards of earlier MGs were gone, and with the MGA in came a rather streamlined shape. A radical change!

Production continued until July 1962 and a total of 101,081 units were sold, the vast majority of which were exported.

Only 5869 cars were sold on the home market, which was and may still be the lowest percentage of any British car.

The MGA was produced in two body styles – convertibles and fixed head coupes – and over time minor styling changes occurred.

Originally MGAs were built with a 1500cc motor, at times the capacity was increased ultimately up to 1622 cc and for a while a twin cam version was also produced.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a four speed manual gearbox.

The MGA immediately became a popular choice for racing, quickly notching up success on the track. Sixty years on the model can often be seen at classic racing events.

MGAs appeared in several movies perhaps the most famous appearance being in Blue Hawaii the 1961 film starring Elvis Presley in which he sings from his red 1960 MGA 1600 Mk I roadster.

pposition parties have called for GPS data from Crown limousines to be released - a move which would reveal what speeds the vehicles had been travelling.

The Department of Internal Affairs is also refusing to release details about any speeding tickets collected by min-

isters driving their taxpayer-funded cars, citing privacy reasons.

The secrecy has not impressed Labour, which said it appeared the Ministerial Services section had something to hide.

And Green Party transport spokeswoman Julie Anne Genter also said

speed information should be released.

“I don’t see why they can’t release the data on speeding, I don’t see how it is protecting public interest.”

We had a very successful week with Clubs NZ SI Ladies Tournament. Huge thanks to everyone who helped in anyway. Our 4 ladies in Pink W Watson(s) J May S Holdom & S Doig won the Salver Division.

Championship draws are now up so let’s get the games played ASAP please.

Once again our Sandra played well in Malaysa and we now look forward to November when she plays for the Black Jacks in CHCH.

Ashburton Bowling Club Congratulations go to Diane Gutberlet and her team on winning the South Island Chartered Clubs tournament held last week. Also congratulations to Margaret Eder, Heather Goodall, Gaynor Crack and Wendy Herriott for reaching the last 16. Well done to all. Barry and his team of helpers did a sterling job of feeding all the players at the Ashburton green, there were no grumbles about the service, well done to all those helpers involved.

The Ingold Tray was competed for on October 10 and resulted in a win for G Taylor, M Quinn and C Rooke. There were 14 teams involved. Men’s Interclub began on Saturday also, and we had all wins on the home green. The team travelling to Christchurch found they had no opposition to play, such a waste of time.

The ladies have begun their Championships and results will come later. The weather caused a delay and postponement of the first rounds, and the 2nd round began Tuesday pm. The postponed round will be played Thursday am.

Ashburton Golf Club Finals time this Saturday down at the Brandon, We have the Watson Cup and the Newton Trophy and two cracking games look in store. The Watson, finds Kevin Smith and Terry O’ReIlly taking on Paul May and Ken Clucas. Now Kev and Terry are a well-oiled pair’s machine, who seem to dovetail perfectly, whilst lefty and Ken are a bit of a one trick pony, and as that pony has carried a left handed jockey through the rounds so far, it is looking a bit tired. I think Kevin and Terry should take it on the 16th.

In the Newton, we have the big bullies Vince Carr and John Dudley throwing their weight around against two lovely English gents in Brian Hawksby and Paddy Bradford. Now these gentle pomms are not accustomed to the aggressive Kiwi match play tactics and might get beaten down by Vince and John’s heavy handed game. Hopefully, for the sake of international relations, they will take it easy on the lilly white dandy’s. I think it could be a massacre, all done by the 12th.

Sunday sees the Lefties tourney meet at 10.30am. This is also open to proper golfers as well, so get on down and enjoy the day.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club Ashburton MSA Petanque Club had one player take part in the PNZ singles played in Wellington recently, coming 3rd in the Bowl. There were 56 entries in this tournament.

Last Saturday we had 18 players (9 teams) take part in our Club Mixed Drawn Doubles. The day was very kind to us, and some very close games were played. It was great to see how much many of our players have improved since we played this competition last year.

Trophy winners:- Beverley Attewell and Richard Browne.

Runners up:- Mick Little and Marion Harrison.

The 2 teams of semi-finalists were:- Stephen Kyle and Karen Bensdorp, and Lester Herron and Karen Stephens.

Our next event is the Piste of Origin which we are hosting for the first time.

This will be played next Sunday 18th with visiting teams from Ascot, Christchurch, and Papanui. We play 3 rounds of doubles in the morning, and 3 rounds of Triples in the afternoon.

Ashburton Writers’ Group A meeting of the Ashburton Writers’ Group was held recently. President Julie welcomed all members present and the visitor.

Rae read the quotation – “You are free to do whatever you like – you need only face the consequences.”

The Assignment for the meeting was “short story with a yellow theme”. Members wrote either stories or poems, the subjects being yellow flowers, yellow belly, yellow star, happy colour, favourites, fairies and cowardice.

The instant exercise was to begin with the words “how I got what I wanted”.

Members wrote of themed party, purple dress, paper person, direct approach, peanut brownies and garden flowers.

The meeting concluded at 2.50pm with the serving of afternoon tea.

The assignment for the November meeting is “Another view of history – share a very different perspective on some historical figure.”

All our Ladies played well at the Charted Clubs South Island Ladies 4/s .Tournament. Congratulations to Diane Gutberlet, Linda Boyd Maureen Sullivan and Raiona Isherwood for taking out the Championship. There were some very

strong teams and a lot of fantastic bowls bowled. Well done to Wendy Suttie and her helpers for a well-run tournament.

The week went off really well and without any hick ups. Thank you so much to everyone involved.

At the Friday triples Jim Lattimore, Roger Callaghan and Bruce Redmond were 2nd well done.

On Saturday the Christchurch interclub games started.

Our Junior Team of Rob Fensom, Jim Lattimore, Bruce Redmond and Lyn Fensom started off with a good win over Morrison Ave. Our senior men 7/s played Sumner and had a 0/3 loss but had a great day out.

Ashburton Wahine Club The Ashburton Wahine Club Bus Trip was held on September 3. We went round Christchurch to see the rebuild of different areas. We went to Lyttelton, the Tannery, the new RSA, the Trendies was a great place to have our lunch. We called in at Bush Inn. A wonderful day was had by the twenty-seven people who attended.

Our Tane Night was held on October 1.

The theme was about England, the choir sang three songs, “England Swings”, “”White Cliffs of Dover” and “A Nightingale sings in Berkley Square”. Coyla, Janice, Win, Lyndia, Rosaline and Marilyn did a reading, “They are changing the ‘Guards’ at Buckingham Palace. A drunken sketch done by Lorraine, Rosalie and Joyce and a sketch of “Wrong Words” by Phyllis, Isabel, Bev, Marie and Marilyn received much laughter.

The Lambeth Walk was beautifully done

by Sue, Betsy, Lorraine, Janice, Robyn G, Lyndia and Robyn.

Joyce sang a solo and the duo of Bella and Robyn sang two songs, which the audience enjoyed.

The fruit sketch by Wendy and Winsome showed fruit in a different way. A choir comedy, “There will always be an England” with Winsome adding to the comedy and the lovely song “Underneath the Arches”, were enjoyed by the audience.

Wendy, Coyla and Phyllis did a sketch “The Light” about a lady given birth to three babies.

A reading by Phyllis and a joke by Rosalie. The choir sang “Old Father Thames” and “There will always be an England”, finished the night’s entertainment.

MID CANTERBURY WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Fairton Chertsey/Pendarves WI hosted our Annual Combined August meeting held at Rosebank Community Room.

Our motto: “Responsibilities must be shouldered, not carried under your arm.”

The Roll Call was donations to the Alzheimers Society.

The speaker was Phillippa Waters who recently walked the Camino Track in Spain, considered by thousands of people to be a journey of self-discovery.

This talk proved to be very informative and enjoyable. Raelene Hewitt thanked Philippa and presented her with a gift.

Afternoon tea was then served and along with fellowship with our hosts concluded the meeting.

September saw Fairton back at Rosebank for the Spring Flower Show. President B Hanrahan welcomed six members and Yvonne Lister who very kindly judged the entries of which members entered all categories.

Motto: “A world without friends would be like a garden without flowers” - a very dull place indeed.

The Roll call brought in a good supply of biscuits for the 206 Club. The Bay and Tray entries for the Ashburton A & P Show were discussed and Fairton has agreed to enter. A pleasant, enjoyable and fun filled afternoon came to a close following afternoon tea.

Hinds On a cold, wet day, Hinds WI held its an-

nual Spring Flower Show. The meeting, held in the Davison Room of the Hinds Community Centre began with the singing of the Ode and Reciting of the Aspirations.

Rosa Bennett welcomed a small attendance and the two judges, Colleen Cockburn and Judy Hay who kindly came out to examine the range of exhibits on display in the supper room. Business was dealt with and long discussions ensued on the format of the show bay and tray entries. A saucer for ACWW Coins for Friendship was well supported. The thought for the day, “When a person is too tired to give you a smile, give them one of yours” was read by Lorraine Baughan.

Following business, members adjoined to the Supper Room where there could be seen daffodils aplenty, anemones, tulips, hyacinth, polyanthus, rhododendrons, camellias and many other flowering shrubs and blooms.

As well there was a display of cooking, loaves, muffins, Louise Cake, Afghans, and jam. Floral arrangements consisted of a variety of spring flowers, all beautifully presented. The novelty section consisted of photographs of blossom time, poems, pencil sketch and a hand held posy while the handcrafts comprised knitted articles, coasters, cross stitch articles and other eye-catching items.

The winners of the various sections were: Cut Flowers, Rosa Bennett: Daffo-

dils, Jenny Sinclair: Floral, Jenny Sinclair: Cooking, Betty Wilson: Novelty items, Lorraine Baughan: Handcrafts, Lorraine Baughan.

Most Points Overall: First Jenny Sinclair, 36 points: Second, Lorraine Baughan, 34: and third, Annette Simister with 24 points. Following the presentation of trophies, Rosa presented the judges with a gift and afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Lorraine and Rosa. The raffle was won by Valmai McKenzie.

Netherby President Pauline welcomed 24 members to our Annual Home Industries Show. She congratulated all those who had entered exhibits and won favour with the judges.

She thanked the members who had delivered “Meals on Wheels” last month and the ladies who had provided flowers for the hospital, it was reported that 28 knitted baby singlets had been donated to the Ashburton Hospital after the Eisteddfod in July.

At 2 pm we welcomed our invited guests from Federation and sister institutes and together recited the Aspirations. Birthday greetings were sung to those celebrating birthdays in September.

Our speaker for the day was April Breading who gave an informative talk on how to care for the soil and plants in our gardens and stressed how important ground covers are in the flower beds.

After comments from our judges we

moved onto the prize giving.

Rakaia Judges for our Spring Flower Show, Joan Ford and Judith McDrury of the Southbridge Garden Club were warmly complimentary of the quality of blooms submitted by our members. It was generally agreed that the recent weather had been diabolical for flowers.

Our judges joined in our normal meeting and took part in our noisy “bottle” auction.

The “Roll Call” was a gardening hint.

Final arrangements were made for the Half-yearly Federation meeting which will be held in Rakaia on Monday. We have asked Jenny Barker to demonstrate her skill with floral work to this meeting.

An excellent selection of biscuits for our Roll Call will go to the 206 Club.

Spring has arrived at last with an array of spring flowers for the competitions.

Tinwald’s Annual trip along with “Buddy” Judy Vaughan was arranged for October. Joan Keele and Bev Oakley won the raffles.

The guest speaker for the day was the talented Margaret Reid who displayed her crafts and wares, a Gypsy caravan, dolls, houses, mostly made from cardboard and wallpaper. Margaret has also made many other items. Yvonne extended thanks with a tray of fruit.

Afternoon tea was then served, bringing our pleasant afternoon to a close.

In brief Ban for NRL’s Earl Sandor Earl has been suspended by the NRL for four years under the league’s anti-doping policy.

The 26-year-old former Canberra, Penrith and Sydney Roosters winger’s ban, announced yesterday, is backdated from his provisional suspension date of August 29, 2013 and he will be eligible to return in August 2017.

Earl was ruled to have committed trafficking and possession offences and has 21 days to appeal the ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Do or die for All Blacks The missing ingredient for the All Blacks at this World Cup has been a genuine sense of fear. They had a little bit of it in their opening game against Argentina and it was only, really, once they’d been reduced to 13 men and were trailing 1612 that the All Blacks started to play a relentless brand of football.

The last half-hour against the Pumas was a truer picture of what they’re all about: ball retention, quickly recycled ball, width, pace, continuity.

The All Blacks had to find that within themselves because if not, they would have lost.

Pressure brought the best out of them. The Pumas brought the best out of them.

That same sense of fear was never there when they played Namibia or Georgia. The All Blacks knew they were going to win, knew the outcome was never in doubt; and without that edge, they were sloppy.

It was a little bit like that against Tonga, too. The All Blacks took time to find their best form and, again, some of that had to do with knowing there weren’t damaging consequences to making mistakes.

None of this was a deliberate approach. They didn’t set out to be inaccurate or slightly off their game. But there is a reality to be acknowledged: that while they are deeply professional and committed, collectively the All Blacks aren’t going to be driven the same way to play Namibia in a pool game as they are to play France in a quarter-final.

That’s human nature. It’s also the nature of top-level sport and while all sorts of argument could be mounted to say this isn’t how it should be, this is how it is.

sent this as something it isn’t.

There’s not an extreme or obvious transition in the mindset of the All Blacks from game to game.

They have a high base-level of professionalism and intrinsic motivation that drives them regardless of opponent.

“We’ve got enough leaders in the group and enough experience to drive our standards regardless of who we’re playing or regardless what’s in front of us,” says veteran flanker Jerome Kaino. “We’re excited by this week because it’s our final – if we don’t perform, we go home and that’s is enough of a challenge for us to be able to bring the best out of us.”

This is a case of tiny margins. Of an almost imperceptible change in mood and mental-

ity. Call it an edge, but there’s something in the All Blacks players’ heads this week that wasn’t there last week.

They’ve been waiting a long time for this moment – for the do-or-die part – as this is the stage of the tournament they say they like the best.

They want that pressure.

They need the sense of occasion to sharpen their focus and execution. The All Blacks, not deliberately or consciously, have become a big-game team.

They produce their best performances on the biggest stages in the most important games and rarely in the last four years have they fluffed their lines in the heat of an epic battle.

The impression the players have given is they’re glad to finally be shot of the pool round

and into the business of finding out who can and who can’t deal with the intensity of World Cup knockout games.

The All Blacks like the challenge to be top-end. The bigger, the better. They like having nowhere to hide; for mistakes to be ruthlessly punished. In these big games, when they know there’s the real prospect of defeat, they transcend a mental state that gives them a fierce determination that’s close to desperation, yet they also retain a calmness and clarity that keeps them focused on task, not outcome.

Poor performance leading to defeat – that’s the blanket of knowledge under which they like to prepare and that’s what’s been missing in the last three games.

Auckland finished second in all three domestic competitions last season, a situation captain Rob Nicol is keen to improve on.

“To make two finals (50-over Ford Trophy, T20 Georgie Pie Super Smash) and not get

across the line was pretty disappointing for everyone,” he said. “There are good things about three twos, but you don’t want to be first loser, which is what you are.”

Last season Auckland got off on a tear, with impressive wins over ND and Wellington, but fell just seven points behind Canterbury, who have test opener Tom Latham and seamer Matt Henry in their 12.

Among those looking to step up for Auckland this season will be 22-year-old seamer Matt Quinn. Preparing for his fourth first-class season, he started last summer with a roar.

Boxers follow champion path

Cornelius Grobler’s path to the national title at the New Zealand Boxing Championships in Invercargill on Sunday had plenty of similarities to the last time an Ashburton boxer was crowned New Zealand champion more than 30 years ago.

Not only did Keith Jemmett, like Grobler, win all three of his bouts in convincing fashion to take the national 39kg junior title in 1981, his coach also had the last name Leath.

Jemmett was coached by Les Leath while Grobler, more than three decades later, won his na-

tional title under the watchful eyes of Les’ sons, John and Roydon.

Les, who had an astonishing record of 137 wins from 151 fights as a boxer, remembers Jemmett’s New Zealand championship win in Levin well.

“He could hit very hard with both hands. After his first fight I said ‘we’ve got the championship’ and he did,” said Les. Les recounted the phone call he received from his sons after Grobler was crowned national champion.

“I felt very emotional, I could just pick what they were talking about because they were very emotional as well. You put

in the work and when you get the reward it’s very satisfying,” he said.

John, who readily admits was a far less talented boxer than his father, matched his dad’s achievement as a coach when Grobler out-classed Richard Robinson in the 69kg final with a vast repertoire of punishing combinations.

“It was pretty emotional, I’m pretty proud to be able to be beside dad with a national title as a coach,” said John.

“I’d never claim to be anywhere near as good as dad as a boxer in the ring, I was just an average boxer, but hoped I could redeem myself to be as

good a coach.”

Brothers John and Roydon form the backbone of a club that punches well above its weight.

Last year, Ashburton boxers competed in 28 fights, winning three South Island novice titles and a South Island golden gloves novice title.

This year, from 17 fights, the club has brought home a South Island novice championship, open class Canterbury championship and a New Zealand national title.

While reflecting on the achievement, John cited coaching values passed down from his father as playing an integral

role in the duo’s recent success.

“The drive to win, the drive to believe, if you don’t work, you haven’t got a chance. Dad was all about hard work and fitness,” he said.

“We went down with the belief that we were going to come back with the title, and our dreams and aspirations all came together.”

The club’s fighters have a habit of developing quickly, notching impressive novice records before testing much more accomplished opponents and Roydon, the least talkative of the three Leaths, was clear when asked his next goal.

“Do it again,” he said.
