If Ashburton’s St John cannot strike a deal with the Ashburton District Council over vehicle access to the rear of its Tancred Street headquarters it will be forced to sell its building and move out of town.

In an effort to resolve a long-running wrangle over the future use of the council-owned Burnett Street section that backs on to the St John base, staff called a meeting with councillors and Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel.

The Tuesday night meeting saw just three councillors – Lynette Lovett, Selwyn Price, Mark Malcolm – and Favel turn up.

And that poor showing was rated “ap-

palling” by St John area executive officer Elaine Vallender.

“This shows me they don’t actually care. We’re not a rich businessman wanting to buy the section, we’re an emergency service.”

St John started negotiations with the council on June 12 and five months later were no closer to getting answers or a deal on the table. The future of the section had been discussed with council staff on several occasions, promises to come back with information were made, but nothing had happened, Vallender said “We are getting frustrated with council because of this lack of action.”

The options discussed were that St John could buy the land at market value, around $400,000, but the organisation does not have the money to meet market price.

Its most pressing need was guaranteed access long-term, but its preference was to buy the land (or have it gifted) because that would future-proof the organisation for expansion in the future. A long-term lease would at least give it 10-year security until it needed a larger building, she said.

Future of free shop could hang on a definition

There’s a fine line between holding the odd garage sale and running a retail business and it appears Ashburton woman Cheryl Mockford has stepped over that line.

Mockford has run a giveaway shop from her Tinwald property for several months, covering the cost of collecting other people’s unwanted goods by holding the odd garage sale. But it appears she’s held one garage sale too many and that’s rubbed someone up the wrong way. That person has complained to the Ashburton District Council. And when a complaint is made, the council is duty bound to investigate, environmental services manager Jane Donaldson said.

“The odd garage sale, not an issue, but you can’t retail from home without a consent. That’s why we have zones. This sort of community activity and retailing does not meet the rules in place for residential areas in the district plan. Rules in the plan are there to protect the community and we’re tasked with making sure they’re applied fairly and without bias,” she said.

Council staff visited Mockford’s property on October 19 and decided the giveaway and garage sale operation was best described as a ‘community activity’. Under

the district plan that meant it could not be conducted in a residential zone without a consent Donaldson said the council considered whether the activity met the definition of ‘home occupation’ in the District Plan and found that it did not. It was a community activity.

“Home occupation excludes re-

tail activity, which Mrs Mockford identified was part of her operations,” she said.

On top of this, while home occupations provided for some level of non-residential activity, such as hair dressing or accounting, it does so on the basis that the activities occur without disrupting the residential neighbourhood,

Donaldson said.

“A ‘free store’ on the other hand attracts people to browse, and there is therefore no limit on potential visitors and their associated traffic, noise and disturbance to neighbours.”

Mockford doesn’t agree, saying the free shop was basically a garage sale that occurred two or

three times a week with no money changing hands. She maintains that using the council’s definition of community activity, her free shop falls well short.

“A consent isn’t required for a garage sale, a Tupperware party or even regular charitable group board meetings at a residence even though the plan doesn’t include these as permitted activities,” she said.

If the council sticks with its community activity definition, Mockford would require a consent that would come with a $1045 price tag and her neighbours would have to agree.

That’s a step she’s refusing to take.

She says she’s negotiated a six week reprieve with the council and hoped in that time the war of words over definitions could be resolved.

“I told them I won’t be shifting.

There’s stuff in my garage and more coming and I’m not saying no to it. It was given to me to give away.”

Mockford maintains the free shop is non-commercial and simply brings together people who have items to give to those who need them.

St John may need to shift elsewhere From P1 To meet increased demand on its services St John is boosting both ambulance and staff numbers and, to accommodate that growth it plans to extend its current building.

Tenders have closed and the build, anticipated to cost in excess of $600,000, is ready to start.

However, nothing will happen, Vallender said, unless St John is given guaranteed access across the council’s section, currently used as public carparking.

To plan for a future where call-

out numbers would only increase, Mid Canterbury territory manager for field operations, Ian Rex, said a larger building was urgently needed, but without access from Burnett Street, the building could not be extended and there would be no option but to move out of town, he said.

Ashburton’s St John currently deals with 3672 call-outs a year and this is increasing by 9.8 per cent each year.

“It’s simple, we have to change, the growth is killing us,” Rex said.

ton needed to follow the Christchurch model, becoming a hub from which ambulances were dispatched around the district as required, Rex said.

To do this, it needed to be able to keep returning ambulances separate from those on standby, until they were cleaned and restocked. And that meant access was needed to the rear of the extended building through the council-owned section, he said.

“This hub cannot and will not work without having access through the carpark. It’s physi-

cally impossible to run it and resource it and that’s why we’re having this meeting. There’s no way we can build a hub or make it function the way it should without this access.”

Without the section, St John was out of options, Rex said.

“If we don’t get this deal we’re out of here, we’ve got no choice we need to make this work.”

For the right price St John would prefer to buy the section from council because that would cement its future in the town centre.

A long-term lease was the fallback

option that could carry it through the planned extensions and into a 10 year future when further extensions might be needed, he said.

The mayor and her councillors could provide no answers to the St John team.

Favel’s response was that the issue now ‘lay on the table’ with council while the status of the land was determined.

For several months council staff have been trying to establish how council acquired the section as this would determine if and how it could be sold.

In brief Diver dies A diver has died on the Mahia Peninsula near Gisborne after getting into trouble at Blacks Reef. A police spokesman said they were called to the incident at Mahia Boating and Fishing Club about 10.30am yesterday.

“The diver was taken out of the water by diving buddies on to a boat, and taken to the nearby boatramp where they were met by emergency services for first aid,” he said. “Sadly, the diver died at the scene.” The spokesman said no more information was available to share about the diver, until next of kin have been advised. A St John spokesperson said ambulance staff also attended.

Strong growth for Methven

Building consent issues in Methven are up $2 million on the same time last year as new homes are constructed in the town.

The strong growth is being powered further by interest from outside of Mid Canterbury in buying houses.

Ashburton District Council figures show that September in particular was a busy month for building consents, with nine issued.

The council reported on records up to September at a meeting of the Methven Community Board this week, showing nine were issued in the first month of

spring compared to just one for the same month last year.

They represented five new houses, two alterations to houses, one new garage and one solid fuel heater. The five new homes took the number of consents for Methven home builds issued this year to 13, altogether representing $6.7 million of consents.

For the same period last year there were 13 new houses represented by consent issues, however, they were lower-cost builds, totalling $4.7 million.

Altogether Methven building consent issues for the year to the end of September are at $7.1 million, compared to $5.1 million for the same period last year.

Community board chairman Dan McLaughlin said climbing numbers of building consents was a good sign.

“There’s a bit of commercial stuff going on around Methven, and also new houses,” McLaughlin said.

“It looks like the year is going to track out ahead of last year, which is great for Methven.”

Real estate salesperson for Ray White Methven, Margaret Feiss, agreed.

“Methven is growing nicely,” Feiss said.

New builds in the upmarket Thyme Stream subdivision were likely to begin over the next 12 months. All four sections in stage one had sold, and two in stage two had sold.

There had been a lot of people moving to Methven and buying in the town this year, from throughout New Zealand and even as far afield as Melbourne.

Many saw Queenstown and Wanaka as outside their budgets, and liked the relaxing lifestyle of Methven.

“It’s a nice safe town, nice schools, and the simple lifestyle and the village atmosphere,” Feiss said.

Schools sign up to grow giant vegetables Two Mid Canterbury primary schools have signed up to a pilot garden project that allows them to teach digital technology.

Using Electric Gardens, children install wireless sensors in their school garden and gather and monitor data through an online portal. The information helps them grow giant vegetables.

Couple wake to racial graffiti slurs A South African couple living near Nelson were stunned to discover racial slurs tagged all over their property in red paint.

The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, had just sold their home in Richmond when they found the words “Sth African C***s” painted in bright red on their driveway and fence last weekend.

“On Sunday morning I woke up, just like a normal day and had coffee outside with my dog when I noticed there was spray paint all over the fence the mail box and the driveway,” the male homeowner told the Herald.

The overnight incident has shocked the couple, who moved to New Zealand in 2016 to escape racist beliefs.

“Racism is quite rife in South Africa and it’s probably the main reason we left,” he said.

“We never had anything like this in SA and then you move to a first world country ... now we are a victim of racism and vandalism all in one. It’s not very comforting.”

The man spent hours painting the driveway and trying to remove the red words on his property.

He wasn’t able to get the racial slurs off the fence and he is concerned about replacing it in case they are targeted again before the new homeowners move in next month.

However, he will replace it once they move out.

A neighbour posted on the Facebook community page Nelson Snippets seeking any advice on the incident to help the couple find the culprit.

One person said it must have happened before 10.30pm as their daughter arrived home and saw it at that time. However, the neighbour was sure it was not there at 8.30pm when they arrived home themselves.

Another commented their concern for the couple saying: “I feel for the family who has had this happen to them, absolutely disgusting.”

A good friend of the couple, who is also South African and lives nearby in Hope, said she was very hurt by the incident.

“People just see us as immigrants they don’t always understand how much we had to sacrifice for our kids to have a better future.”

Akld murder investigation Police have arrested and charged a man following a homicide investigation into the death of a male in Otara on Tuesday night.

Police were still working to confirm the identity of the victim.

A 35-year-old man, who is believed to be known to the victim, has been charged with murder. He is due to appear in court today.

Inquiries were still continuing but police said at this stage they were not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.

Police were called to an address following reports of a firearm being discharged and arrived to find an injured male on the footpath, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Sugar daddy laments expenses A sugar daddy truck driver who lavishes between $500 to $1000 in gifts on his stripper sugar baby wants to claim it back as tax deductible expense.

The man, who does not want to be named, is angry at a chartered accountant’s suggestion that gifts received by sugar babies from their sugar daddies must be declared as taxable income.

On top of lunch and dinner dates, the 52-year-old Auckland man says he has bought his sugar babies gifts that included perfumes, lingerie and jewellery.

“The intention when I give her these gifts are that they are presents. It is insulting to suggest that it is a form of payment because the sugar baby is not a prostitute,” he said.

“If these gifts are taxed, then I should be able to claim what I spent on them back as tax deductible expense, not fair that the tax department gets it both ways.”

However, tax expert and char-

tered accountant David Han has rubbished the man’s suggestion.

“Claim expense against what?”

Han said.

“Example, many real estate agents will want to claim expenses on their haircuts, but this is specifically disallowed by Inland Revenue as this is considered private in nature,” Han said.

“The money received by the hairdresser, however, is taxable.”

Another example, Han said, were private grocery bills – which are deemed as private consumption – even though supermarkets have to pay GST and income tax on the sale.

A report in the Herald on Sunday revealed that young New Zealand women were signing up to relationship arrangements with older men and exchanging

love for gifts or money.

A sugar relationship is where an older man or woman spends large amounts of money on a younger girlfriend or boyfriend in exchange for a relationship – which may or may not be sexual.

Han said Tuesday that sugar babies are no different to escorts and sex workers, and should be paying taxes on the gifts they get.

The IRD said whether or not a “transfer of value” – such as gifts, overseas holiday or cash – is a non-taxable gift or income depends on the type of relationship the two people have.

It is considered a gift, and not taxed, only if the transfer of value was made because of natural love and affection, the department said.

However, it is taxable if the gift is given in return for services or something received back.

A department spokeswoman said each case will need to be looked at individually to decide if it is a gift or income.

Fijians go to the polls The polls opened yesterday in the Pacific island state of Fiji, which is holding its second democratic election since a military coup ousted the government 12 years ago.

The leaders of two separate former military coups are vying for the prime ministership with some half million people expected to cast their votes.

Thousands of people began arriving at polling stations early yesterday morning despite heavy rainfall, a local newspaper said.

More than 2000 police had been deployed to maintain security as Fijians choose 51 parliamentarians out of 235 candidates.

Incumbent Frank Voreqe Bainimarama, who leads the Fiji First Party, is facing former prime minister and opposition leader Sitiveni Rabuka, who was responsible for two coups in the 1980s.

Thai kickboxing under scrutiny after death The death of a 13-year-old boy who was knocked out during a kickboxing match in Thailand has sparked debate over whether to ban matches involving children.

The death of Anucha Tasako came after a Muay Thai –Thai boxing – match during the weekend in the Bangkok suburb of Samut Prakarn.

A Facebook page Muaythai Krobwongjorn, which covers the sport, said he died from a brain haemorrhage. Protective gear is normally not worn in the sport, and video circulated on social media said to be of the fight shows Anucha not wearing any.

Child boxing is widespread in Thailand, especially in rural areas, where it offers a way

for children to help provide for their families and a path to lift them out of poverty, according to its advocates. Opponents say the sport is dangerous, citing studies such as one published last month by Thailand’s Mahidol University saying that allowing children under 15 to box could result in various types of brain damage.

Thai lawmakers are considering legislation proposed last month banning children under 12 from competitive boxing.

The legislation has been forwarded to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, which has already drafted a revised version, said Gen Aduldej Intapong, a member of the National Legislative Assembly.

Sri Lankan presidential decree suspended Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court has suspended a presidential decree dissolving parliament and ruled that an earlier decree summoning MPs on Wednesday is valid.

The court decided on Tuesday that the decree issued last Friday by President Maithripala Sirisena to dissolve parliament will be suspended until December 7.

On October 26, Sirisena abruptly ousted Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and replaced him with former

strongman Mahinda Rajapaksa. A day later he suspended parliament, apparently to allow Rajapaksa time to gather support among MPs. He later ordered parliament to return on Wednesday, but then dissolved it last Friday and called for new elections in January.

Opposition MP Ajith Perera said parliament will meet on Wednesday to prove that Wickremesinghe has the support of a majority of lawmakers.

Public television station ThaiPBS reported that Anucha had fought more than 170 matches since he began boxing at the age of 8, and was currently fighting in the under 41 kilogram (under 90 pound) weight division. It said he was raised by his uncle, who is a boxing trainer, after his parents separated.

The uncle, Damrong Tasako, told Thai PBS that Anucha’s death was an accident but he would like to see regulations for children under 15 to wear protective gear to soften blows to the head and body.

Drunk Greek priest bites policeman A priest on the Greek island of Crete has bitten a police officer after being pulled over for driving erratically in reverse through the centre of Heraklion.

The priest, reportedly visibly inebriated, caused a slight accident driving backwards through several streets before police stopped him in front of the local court.

Enraged with being pulled

over, he hurled verbal abuse at officers and bit one of them on the hand as he attempted to avoid alcohol testing.

Then he flailed at them as they arrested him.

The incident occurred at the weekend, according to news portal cretalive.gr.

The priest now faces charges for insulting the officers, resisting arrest and injury, its report said.

Game of Thrones final season The eighth and last season of Game of Thrones finally has a date with destiny. HBO said that the series will return in April 2019 with six episodes to conclude its run. A video touting the show’s return next year included clips from seasons past showing both living and dead competitors for the crown of Westeros but didn’t give a taste of the final episodes. HBO isn’t getting out of the Game of Thrones business. A prequel created by Martin and writer-producer Jane Goldman is under way, with Naomi Watts set to star, and other spinoffs are possible.

Pink diamond sells for $50m Christie’s has sold the ‘Pink Legacy’ diamond at auction for more than $US50 million, including fees, saying it’s a new world record price per carat for a pink diamond. Christie’s said that renowned jeweller Harry Winston was the buyer.

The auction house had expected to fetch $US30-50 million for the nearly 19-carat, rectangular-cut stone, the largest fancy vivid pink diamond that it has ever put under the hammer. It was the standout offering at Christie’s autumn jewellery auction in Geneva, Switzerland. The stone once belonged to the Oppenheimer diamond family, and Christie’s says it’s among the most chemically pure gems.

Gradually add 1/2 C caster sugar and continue to beat for 1-2 minutes until glossy. Set aside.

Gently spoon sponge mixture into the prepared cake pan and smooth over the surface, bake 1 hour.

Remove from oven; cool in cake pan for 15 minutes. While the sponge is cooling, combine cream, evaporated milk, condensed milk and extra vanilla in a large jug.

Once the cake has cooled, using a skewer; poke holes over the top of the sponge.

Pour over cream mixture and allow it to absorb; cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.

Turn out cake on to a platter.

Spread whipped cream over the top of the cake and decorate with berries and dust with icing sugar.

Sometimes it’s better to give than get C

urrently Ashburton’s St John has a huge problem on its hands.

The emergency service has outgrown its current premises and it wants to expand. It’s been given an extra ambulance and extra staff to meet the district’s growing demand for ambulance services but it’s seriously out of space.

Proactively its had plans drawn up for extensions to its Tancred Street building and it knows it has a financial backer to supplement money it has in kitty to pay for the project. But there’s just one problem. St John needs more land.

And the land it needs may not be easily acquired. It’s owned by the Ashburton District Council and by all accounts, finding out

how the council came by its ownership could be a convoluted process.

St John doesn’t have time to wait for council’s long and winding processes to get to the end point. The organisation has construction contracts ready, it knows it can pay for the work – just, but it can’t push ahead unless it has the land it needs for the future.

That land is needed, not for a building, but for access to ensure the correct hygiene protocols are observed – clean ambulances out one door, returning vehicles in another where they can be parked, cleaned and restocked.

It all seems simple – the council isn’t using the land and St John wants it.

In between lies a potential issue around the land’s original ownership and if that’s resolved, there’s the issue of payment.

Clearly St John can’t afford to pay market rate, likely to be in excess of $400,000. They’re out of money once the building extension is paid for and their only recourse would be to go to the community to raise funds.

Ultimately the ratepayer would cough up the money.

Currently the council receives nothing for this land. It’s used by casual parkers and one assumes the council doesn’t charge itself rates – or does it?

Either way, there’s no loss of income if it divests itself of the inner town section.

And maybe the council should be looking at not gaining any income if it sells the section either.

Councillors need to look in their hearts, think about their community, consider the role of St John and come up with a way to gift this land to the organisation. Call it an investment in the future of the town if it needs a name, because the organisation

has made it quite clear, if the land’s not available and vehicle access across it can’t be guaranteed, they’ll be looking for a new home – out of town.

Yes, the council acquires land across the district as an investment, as a hedge against future development needs and sometimes just because it can. Some of that land is leased and generates income, some of it sits idle, but some of it – the Burnett Street section – could be used for community good.

If councillors are in any doubt about the public appetite for giving away a block of land, why don’t they get out on the street and ask the question. They might be surprised by the answer.

On the subject of jobs, I was ecstatic to see that New Zealand’s latest employment figures show unemployment is at just 3.9 per cent – its lowest rate in over a decade.

With employment at a record 68.3 per cent, that means in the last four months, 29,000 more people have found jobs and that’s fantastic.

More young Kiwis, formerly not in education or training, are now learning or earning and the results are delivering an immeasurable boost to confidence levels and the standard of living of thousands of whanau.

Canterbury’s unemployment rate fell to 3.5 per cent – the lowest rate in the South Island, and one only beaten by the Waikato nationally.

This shows this Government

is absolutely on the right track when it comes to our commitment to make New Zealand the best place in the world to raise a child.

Ensuring real work and real incomes are available for all, and that everyone who can is learning, earning, caring or volunteering, is just the start of this process.

I look forward to continuing this work and further delivering a noticeable difference for us, the people of Mid Canterbury, in 2019.

YOUR VIEW Teachers’ strike I wrote this post this morning to give my perspective on the strike: I strike again today.

Teachers in New Zealand have become a scapegoat for an undervalued and totally disrespected education system.

Our schools should be the bedrock upon which this country is based. We should have the most highly compassionate and intelligent, kind and highly qualified teachers for our most precious resource – our kids.

Teaching needs to be a highly desirable and respected profession, and appropriately rewarded and supported.

All schools – not just high decile schools who can afford to fundraise – should be overflowing with

incredible (and far better paid) teacher aides, by readily accessible support from social workers and mental health workers (who also deserve not to be overworked and underpaid), and with an available supply of relief teachers to cover when staff are ill.

Schools should be palaces of learning, with brilliant and committed teachers and staff, healthy buildings and playgrounds, upto-date resources and a community with a great respect for the value of education.

When we stop valuing education, we stop valuing our future.

Being a West Wing fan, here’s a favourite quote: “Education is the silver bullet.

Education is everything. We don’t need little changes. We need gigantic revolutionary changes . . .”

Armistice Day On behalf of the Ashburton Returned and Services Association we would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Mid Canterbury and to all visitors that attended the Armistice Day Celebration at the cenotaph on Sunday.

It was very gratifying to see the numbers and a great tribute to those who sacrificed so much, 100 years ago; they would have been pleased with what they saw and very proud of their achievements.

A huge thank you to all the help received on the day and the days prior, too many to mention but I

must especially thank the CMT boys who endured heavy rain while placing the crosses out on the Friday, quoting this is nothing to what was endured all those years ago.

I, like many others, on Sunday had a very busy day keeping up with all the activities that were on in town, firstly, the Cenotaph Service, then to the Civic Centre for the MSA Choir For the Fallen concert which was very well done and at night to the Peter Jackson movie They Shall Not Grow Old. What an insight to what actually happened, the scenes very explicit and gruesome, no wonder not many were willing to talk of the war on their return.

Cushnie resigns in protest The Rural Support Trust (RST) Mid Canterbury welfare co-ordinator for mycoplasma bovis response has resigned.

Angela Cushnie, in the role for just short of three months, tendered her resignation last month, citing a decision made at the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) national office that was likely to have a “significant welfare impact’’ on farming families, with flow-on effects.

It was unclear what the decision was or the effects it could have on Mid Canterbury’s farming community, already caught up in the M. bovis phased eradication, but it was enough to cause the recently appointed Cushnie to resign.

“I resigned from my RSTMC M. bovis welfare role in protest to a decision made by MPI national office.

“On behalf of the Rural Support Trust Mid Canterbury M. bovis welfare team, I anticipate that if MPI proceed on their current course, there will be a significant welfare impact on the farming families directly involved, neighbours and the wider community (particularly those already impacted by the Biosecurity Act 1993).

“I believe the social and personal toll this will have is beyond my capability and beyond my brief as co-ordinator,’’ Cushnie said in a statement.

Cushnie said in the days following her resignation there had been positive progress after MPI had reversed its initial decision, “which was very encouraging for me that [the welfare team’s] being heard’’.

However, she had not rescinded her resignation and, as of last week, a “suitable replacement had been found’’ and Cushnie was working through the final update with RST trustees.

She was full of praise for the regional team she worked alongside, especially MPI staff members Al Lawn and Loretta Dobbs.

“My hope is that a satisfactory compromise can be made but I have exhausted every avenue available to me to try and make this happen.

“I cannot stand by and support this decision,’’ she said at the time of her resignation.

The farming families she was working with had been kept informed of her resignation.

Time is running out for people to enter the 2019 New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards, with entries closing tomorrow.

The New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards provide a learning and growth platform for young and emerging farmers as they progress in their careers.

“We provide an opportunity for entrants to learn about themselves and the industry, to connect with other like-minded people, and to grow their business, their career and themselves personally,” said general manager, Chris Keeping.

The awards strive to keep pace with the rapidly changing dairy industry to remain

relevant and reflective of what is required to be a successful farmer for both today and tomorrow’s world and changes to the visa criteria for dairy trainee and dairy manager categories reflect this.

Other key initiatives include a pilot investigating the suitability of the Share Farmer programme as a learning pathway for the NZ Diploma in Agribusiness Management and establishing Regional Ambassadors to identify and support prospective entrants.

Ashburton canning plant needs staff

Oldfield in plum position Well-known blades shearer Allan Oldfield is set to emulate the achievement of his father in becoming a New Zealand World Championships team member, just days after helping mark 150 years since one of the first shearing competitions were ever held.

Oldfield, and Fairlie farmer and shearer Tony Dobbs, lead a selection series and are in the plum seats going into the final round in the national Corriedale Championships today and Friday at the New Zealand Agricultural Show (formerly the Canterbury A&P Show).

Oldfield’s father, Phil, was third in the 2017 world blade-shearing final in which Dobbs was runnerup in Invercargill.

Last Saturday, Oldfield and Dobbs travelled north to take part in a rare North Island blades shearing event, held at the Central Hawke’s Bay A&P Show.

That event marked a centuryand-a-half since a blades shearing competition was held at Waipukurau on January 21, 1868, which predates the first Canterbury show blades event by five years, and the CHB show by almost 50 years.

The first machine shearing competition in New Zealand was held in 1902, at the Hawke’s Bay A&P Show in Hastings.

The pair, among about 30 still blade-shearing in New Zealand – commercial blade shearing almost exclusively in Canterbury

with about 300,000 shorn each year – never hesitated to make the trip in the late planning of the event, with North Island shearers Russell Knight, of Apiti, and Neil Weggery, of Dannevirke.

Knight has done little more blades shearing than being taught

by Dobbs, while Weggery has shorn with the blades abroad, including in a competition he himself sponsored in Scotland, and they took part in the first bladeshearing match in the North Island since the 2012 World Championships in Masterton.

The shearers were paired one from each island in each team, the southerners each shearing three and the northerners one.

New Zealand Dairy Collaborative Ltd is looking for staff for its new milk-powder canning plant in Ashburton.

The plant, in its final weeks of construction and set-up, has been years in development and is expected to tap into overseas markets.

The addition of 21 new team members, including senior supply chain, quality, operations manager and can-line technicians, will add to a skeleton crew, which includes director, and former Ashburton mayor, Angus McKay, general manager Brad Harden and some parttime administration staff.

Harden said the infant formula dry-blend facility was a versatile plant, capable of blending bovine, goat or sheep milk powder.

Indosa plant equipment is used in the canning of infant formula milk powder. Within 14 months of operation, the Ashburton plant will be capable of processing 220,000 cans of the 900g sized tins of infant formula a month.

It will source standard base milk powder from major manufacturers in New Zealand, such as Fonterra, Synlait Milk or Westland Milk, and blend infant formula, as approved to Ministry for Primary Industries standards.

This would include their own Carimax brand, under the manufacturer name Orbalife Dairy Ltd, or providing the blending and canning operation for other companies.

Tightened regulations in China last year meant there was

extra volume in the industry for exports to China, but that also meant more audits.

Other countries had already expressed interest and could come on stream before Chinese markets opened.

The company was working to a December 6 deadline to get the canning area contained to meet national hygiene standards.

After that date people entering the area, past the red line zone, will need to be fully gowned with protective clothing, which includes hooded coveralls, balaclava and gloves.

The plant is using a Swiss, Indosa canning and seaming plant, with “local blender equipment’’.

The plant will also offer tourism opportunities and visits from school groups to see how the process works. Parking will be allocated for tour buses, and there will be presentation rooms and a viewing gallery looking directly into the canning operation.

“It’s the heart of where everything is,’’ Harden said, of the canning room.

“It means people are metres away from the processing operation.’’

Harden, of Staveley, has been with the Ashburton-based dairy collaborative for the past 15 months.

He was formerly at Synlait Milk, south of Dunsandel, where he was nutritional brand manager.

The company was advertising for staff through a recruitment agency via online platforms.

The $10 bottle of NZ’s Antipodes water that has Australia up in arms The Grounds of Alexandria has built a name for itself as a Sydney institution – a rustic oasis of fresh produce in the Sydney’s industrial inner west.

It’s a reputation which draws winding lines of breakfast fans to patiently queue at the Alexandria eatery for a taste of its homestyle food every weekend.

But among the potted plants and livestock, one menu item from New Zealand has deeply disturbed Sydneysider Nick Stoll, who popped in to grab a late lunch with his girlfriend.

He saw a humble bottle of water was being flogged for a whopping $A10 ($10.60) and quickly took to social media to express his dismay.

“You’ve got to be kidding me Sydney?” he wrote alongside a picture of the menu item.

Shortly after posting it on an array of social media channels, the 26-year-old was inundated with responses from commenters.

Many said he shouldn’t be surprised, given he was in one of the most popular and trendy cafes in Sydney’s inner west.

“I mean it’s The Grounds aka ‘that place where you queue for food and need to take on a mortgage to pay for breakfast’ — what did you expect?” one cynical commenter wrote.

However, as the menu shows, this isn’t just any old water. It’s Antipodes mineral water from New Zealand, which can be consumed by customers in either still or sparkling form.

Now The Grounds has launched a savage response to the critics telling news.com.au it’s “amazing that people have nothing better

“Cry me a river (of antipodes pure artesian water) is what I would say first of all, I guess if you want a bottle of this ritzy brew you’re really going to have to splash out,” the cafe’s brand director said.

“For those who don’t want to pay for water, we recommend you tap out (if you know what I mean). We have tap water on offer in all of our venues.”

But the menu’s product description was scoffed at by cynics for claiming it has soul-refreshing qualities.

“A carbon neutral process that results in a pure artesian water from deep in the New Zealand

springs that will refresh you soul and tastebuds,” the menu reads.

And, as commenters on social media pointed out, this posh brand of water can set you back $A6 per litre even if you buy it in a shop or online. It’s about the same in New Zealand. So, although it looked pricey on the menu — it’s actually just a standard restaurant mark-up price.

“Antipodes water is typically around $A6/litre so it’s not that outrageous at a cafe,” wrote one commenter.

“Mineral water costs wherever you go. If you don’t want it, don’t order it. Ask for tap water,” added another.

The Grounds spokesman admitted the flowery language didn’t come off well.

“If anything, this exercise has taught us to review our copywriting much more often, who says ‘water ... that will refresh your soul and tastebuds’? We’re better than that! We will be amending this copy immediately,” he said.

But not all Aussies are so put out.

The “soul-refreshing” water is available from Australian liquor supermarket chain Dan Murphy’s for just over $A5 — and some of the reviews from customers are glowing to say the least.

“There are so many waters in the world,” one reviewer began.

“Heaps in the oceans. Heaps spread across the water systems of cities globally. But of all the water, this is the best water,” one wrote.

“I have never tasted a better and more refreshing sparkling water than this one from New Zealand,” wrote another. - NZME

On Sunday afternoon the Skip 2 It - Ashburton Open Triples were played, winning this tournament was the team of M. Hill, B. Williams & J. Rush 3 wins: 2nd B. White, R. Tonks, N. Woods 3 Wins: 3rd W. Watson, S. Holdom & S. Doig 2 wins: 4th M. Behrns, R. Coyle, S. Hyndman 2 wins: 5th G. Clark, J. Kewish & R. Heads 2 wins: 6th R. Herriott, W. Herriott & R. Diamond 2 wins: This tournament was played in great conditions with the weather coming to the party and the greens had been well rolled in the morning.

Wednesday’s local inter-club both Ashburton Men’s teams winning 2-1 against Hampstead and Rakaia.

In the Ladies 7’s Monday 12th Ashburton winning two out of three games.

Ashburton Toastmasters October 24 meeting: Phil was our toastmaster for the evening. He spoke throughout the evening about other speakers which influenced him in the past, specifically about John Eatwell, renowed psychologist, and his

personal leadership programme dealing with self-improvement.

Andy, our grammarian, introduced the word ‘tendentious’, meaning biased.

Our first speaker was Matt, introduced

by Robin, who read Rudyard Kipling’s poem ‘If’ and what it meant for him.

Adi was our second speaker, introduced

by Alanna. Adi started the Storytelling advanced manual, and as such had to tell a folk tale. He told us the Norse mythology story about the death of the god Baldur, and how the god Loki was involved in this dark tale.

Next Alanna introduced our table topic for the evening: If you could purchase any tangible object, what would you purchase and why?

We had some very interesting answers to this question.

The second part of the evening involved evaluations for the speeches and table topic speakers, then Jeff, as our memory master, reminded us the things we heard, and Chiyo gave her timer’s report.

Finally Rene provided a great, as always, general evaluation, and Phil closed the meeting.

We’ll meet on November 7th and 21st, host the area contest on November 28, and have our final 2018 meeting on December 12 (skipping the 5).

Cavendish Club Arts and Crafts Aileen introduced the afternoon encouraging members to write their Memoirs. After Aileen read her story, Diana followed with her well documented history. Judy then gave a very full detail of her and family history going back

very many years. Joan also had an interesting story and showed one of her 23 scrapbooks. All members were really interesting and gone to a lot of work. A very enlightening afternoon hopefully will entice more members to write their story.

Garden Circle Last Friday, Sandra Grant our Convener welcomed a very knowledgeable local lady, Mrs Pauline O’Leary, to speak to us about roses. Pauline is a National Judge, so who better could we have had!

She spoke about preparation of the ground before planting, which is absolutely essential, feeding all roses, because they are gross feeders and most importantly plenty of water. She told us about new varieties or roses, which are released every year. And of course all the old favourites which never go out of fashion. Pauline was thanked and presented with a gift. Afternoon tea concluded the afternoon.

Library Circle Members enjoyed a pre-Christmas treat when Coyla Chisnall introduced us to her collection of battery operated Father Christmas. What a delight they are – we saw Father Christmas riding a motor bike, climbing a ladder, hula hooping, doing gymnastics, jiving etc, etc.

Coyla also told us about her experiences when, with her husband, she worked in a circus. This was a meeting which gave us lots to smile about.

Tinwald Branch Red Cross The Branch Meeting was held on November 6 in the Tinwald Hall. President Pat O’Brien welcomed members and

welcomed a new member and also two visitors.

The Red Cross Principles were said by all present. Members stood for a Minutes silence in remembrance of a former member Esma Lysaght who passed away in September.

A report was given on the successful raffle to raise funds for Red Cross with thanks to all members who helped in any way.

Four members visited member Averil Cleland on her special 90th birthday in September.

Wellington Red Cross informed us that they were no longer producing the Red Cross Diary after many years of doing so.

Information was received that refugee families will begin to resettle in

Christchurch next March years after the earthquakes stopped resettlement in the city.

The New Zealand Red Cross National Council meeting was held in Wellington recently with two members of the Mid-South Canterbury Area Council attending.

The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross has made a short visit to New Zealand.

The raffle was drawn and won by one of the visitors – Lyn. The meeting was closed and two members Janet Clinton and Dellwyn Moylan were introduced and gave a very interesting demonstration of card making with members making one. Eunice Jones thanked them both.

Afternoon tea concluded the meeting.

The reason Ireland are bitter

By GreGor Paul There’s clearly a bit of ill-feeling in Ireland about the way things played out the last time the All Blacks were in Dublin.

It was an unforgettably brutal test that saw three Irishmen concussed, two All Blacks yellow carded and an edgy postmatch interview where Steve Hansen asked his questioner if she was trying to get him to admit he was in charge of a dirty team.

The day after the All Blacks’ 21-9 victory, Irish team manager Mick Kearney suggested 12 incidents had been put in front of the citing commissioner, 11 of which had been committed by the All Blacks.

Two incidents in particular had upset the Irish: the first was early in the game when Sam Cane’s shoulder collected Robbie Henshaw’s head in a clash that the officials saw as accidental but the crowd didn’t.

And the second was a high tackle by Malakai Fekitoa on Simon Zebo after 60 minutes that was yellow carded when a judicial panel later ruled it should have been red.

On balance, the Irish had good reason to feel a touch aggrieved as the result may well have been different had the All Blacks been forced to play out the whole of the last quarter rather than half of it with 14 men. The fact it was Fekitoa, back after his spell in the bin, who scored the All Blacks decisive third try only fuelled the sense of injustice.

It’s not quite water under the bridge, as evidenced on Monday when Ireland’s talismanic first-five Johnny Sexton said about that game: “It was physical. I think that game probably went over the edge.

“But I think it did change a lot going forward. It was a massive game where high tackles were assessed in terms of what was acceptable and what was not. After that, I feel things changed.”

It was, indeed, a watershed game in the sense it heightened the need for World Rugby to lower the tackle point and for

referees to be stronger in policing contact with the head.

And Sexton was also right when he said: “In some ways it was a sign of respect. They may have been hurting from a few weeks previously. But you only get the respect if you beat them. You feel that when you beat them.”

The All Blacks were hurting after losing to Ireland in Chicago two weeks earlier.

That loss got into a few All Blacks’ heads and their response when they met Ireland again two weeks later was to rely too heavily on their fury to extract the victory.

The All Blacks were too much bludgeon, not enough rapier and they learned as much in beating Ireland as they did losing to them.

“We went out there and really tried to bash them and we ended up making so many tackles and played the game that way. It was a gutsy win,” Cane said.

“What I learned from that is we don’t want to go out there and bash them. Use our skill-set, some of our game management things we learned and play smart as well as physical.”

And that’s helping this game generate as much interest as it is. The All Blacks had an honest review after that test in Dublin and accepted the need to be more balanced in their approach: to understand that they can hurt teams as much with their movement and timing as they can their physical intent.

They know that to win in Dublin again they will need to find the right mix of physicality and creativity. The red mist can’t come down and blind them to space and opportunity. Their offloading has to be prominent, so too their subtle slip passes that often put the big runners into holes.

But nor can they afford to be passive.

They can’t concede an inch to Ireland and they can’t buy into what is a slightly altered narrative of what happened in 2016.

The inference has been strong in the Irish view of what happened in 2016 that they were guiltless victims.

Sam Cane was cited for this tackle on Robbie Henshaw.

Which is not quite true. Sexton himself would, in the current regime of zero tolerance, have been yellow carded possibly even sent off for his attempted try-saving tackle on Beauden Barrett in the first half.

There were plenty of other Irish high shots and neck rolls and maybe they didn’t quite give as good as they got, but they frequently strayed on the wrong side of the metaphorical line.

As Barrett noted wryly on Tuesday: “I remember the Irish being pretty aggressive as well.”

And the question for Ireland is the same as it is for the All Blacks – can they, too, find the right tone on Saturday? Stand up to the All Blacks but not overdo the intimidation and enforcement?

Can they avoid falling into the trap of letting lingering resentment trick them into thinking they need to exact some kind of below the line revenge for 2016?

Rarely does a test have such a great back story – a kind of Russian doll history where there is drama stacked upon drama and the near certainty that more will be added on Sunday morning.

Hanrahan hoping to kick off with a bang

Winchmore harness racing trainer, Laurence Hanrahan will officially launch his season today on his home track.

The strike-rate trainer, who has more than 200 wins next to his name in an illustrious career, lines up his first runners for the term at the annual Ashburton Trotting Club Cup Week meeting and will be hoping to kick things off with a bang with his duo of starters.

Hanrahan will put first-starter Twilight Saga and also Pembrook Legacy in the float for the short trek around the corner to the racecourse and is hoping that both perform well.

“They’re both well and I’m happy with their work at home,” Han-

rahan said.

“But you can’t beat the race fitness and experience and they’re both going to be better for having had a run too.”

Twilight Saga will kick things off for the day in a wide-open maiden field.

The four-year-old mare is owned by Hanrahan, his wife Justine and good friends Carol McAtamney and Neale Pierce and the quartet also raced her dam, Vera’s Twilight who won twice and was placed on seven occasions from just 14 starts.

“She’s a nice wee mare, a little on the small side – but everything she’s done I have liked.

“Her trials and workouts have been good and as long as she handles the experience of her first start I think she’s definitely good

enough to be competitive.”

The trial form around Twilight Saga looks even better after racing at Addington on Tuesday after the four-year-old mare was beaten by a short-margin by impressive winner Having The Faith.

She lines up today in a field that is strong on local runners.

Geoff Kelk starts his promising pacer Art Collector in the race and Rex Bennett also has Victor Tango.

Ben Waldron will line up a firststarter in Georgie Zukov for a big band of owners.

Hanrahan’s second runner, Pembrook Legacy, will head into his assignment in the final race of the day a little behind the eightball compared to where his trainer had hoped him to be.

In brief Lee pulls out Kiwi number two Danny Lee has pulled out of next week’s World Cup Of Golf in Melbourne.

The 28-year-old is coming off a second place finish at the latest PGA tournament in Mexico. Radio Sport understands with becoming a new father, Lee didn’t want to travel from the United States to Melbourne next week. His decision leaves Ryan Fox looking for a partner, with Michael Hendry and Nick Voke the key contenders.

Hendry appears first in line, as he was the highest ranked at the cut-off for entries. New Zealand Golf is working on confirming a replacement.

Drifters to slide into town Mid Cantabrians will get the opportunity to have an up-close look at a couple of top drifting cars and meet their drivers today.

The 4 and Rotary South Island Championships are being held this weekend at Levels Raceway in Timaru, and Drew and Jodie Donovan have made their way from Tauranga to compete at the

event. On their way they’re making a few stop-offs, including one at Ashburton Toyota this afternoon.

The Donovans are a husband and wife team who compete in D1NZ, the highest level of drifting in New Zealand.

The stop-offs they’re making are all about promoting the 4 and

Rotary South Island Champs and their mini tour started at Mag and Turbo in Christchurch on Tuesday and Wednesday.

This morning they headed to Ruapuna for a track session before heading to Ashburton where they will park up at Ashurton Toyota at 2pm, where the public can look around the cars, meet

the Donovans and get posters signed.

They’ll then head to Timaru tomorrow and visit Bluestone School in Timaru where the children can ask questions and look at the cars.

There will possibly be another school visit on Friday afternoon, but this is yet to be confirmed.

White Ferns all but out of T20 cup

By Niall aNdersoN The White Ferns are dreaming of a World Cup miracle, but they’re about to be woken up.

A 33-run defeat to Australia in their second game of the Twenty20 Women’s Cricket World Cup has dropped the White Ferns to 0-2, and left them requiring a series of outcomes ranging from “plausible” to “preposterous” to have any hope of qualifying for the semifinals.

What needs to happen for the Ferns to make the semifinals?

Well, a lot: • Ireland need to beat India on Friday morning • Australia need to beat India on Sunday morning • The Ferns need to beat both Pakistan and Ireland • The Ferns need to end up with a higher net run rate than India In reality though, you could stop hypothesising after the first proviso.

Remember Ireland? They were the team who the Ferns beat by 305, 306, and 347 runs in three ODIs earlier this year, and have been swatted by Australia (by nine wickets) and Pakistan (by

Only once before have the Ferns not made the semifinals, and in that year – 2014 – they won three of four games, only to miss out on the semis due to net run rate.

This time, they’ll go no better than 2-2, and they can’t have any complaints, after Australia proved why they are the prohibitive favourites to win the whole shebang.

Batting first, Australia’s target of 154 didn’t seem overwhelming; in fact it appeared moderately hopeful for the White Ferns, after they had pegged their rivals back from a dominant position

at 71-0 through eight overs.

The spin of Leigh Kasperek (325) did most of the damage, but while some elements of a moral victory had been accomplished, an actual victory was still going to prove difficult on the Guyana wicket against a classy Australian attack.

So it proved as the Ferns’ hopes and dreams dissipated within three overs. Back to the pavilion went Anna Peterson, Sophie Devine and Amy Satterthwaite, and at 13-3, their World Cup was realistically over.

Suzie Bates, as she has so many times before, gave the Ferns some hope, hitting 44 from 41 balls and putting on 62 for the fourth wicket with Katey Martin, but the required run rate was always rising, and once Martin fell, so did the rest of the Ferns.

From 75-3, the Ferns were bowled out for 120; what will be a limp end to a tournament which had the potential to springboard the White Ferns to greater relevancy in the New Zealand sporting landscape.

Admittedly, their chance of creating mass interest back home wasn’t helped by a frontloaded schedule.

Had their upcoming games – and likely victories – against Pakistan and Ireland appeared earlier in the schedule, the White Ferns could have slowly built up support and interest, culminating in plenty of intrigue for their decisive showdowns against India and Australia.

Instead, the reverse happened. With the Ferns 0-2 and likely eliminated from the tournament before their clash with Pakistan on Friday morning, the remaining two games are set to go by without fanfare – denying a rising group of players a superb chance to hit the spotlight.

Still, there’s an easy solution to that – win games. The White Ferns haven’t, and instead of hitting the spotlight, their Cup campaign faces a gloomy conclusion.

New Zealand Rugby is offering little mercy for the struggling Wallabies, scheduling yet another Bledisloe Cup Test for their Eden Park graveyard next year. The All Blacks will host the world No.7 Australians at their Auckland fortress on August 17, a week after the teams meet at Optus Stadium in Perth for the first time. There are just two Bledisloe Cup Tests being played in a reduced Sanzaar schedule because of the Rugby World Cup starting on September 20. The Auckland clash is set to be the last for both teams ahead of the global tournament unless other warm-up matches are arranged.

Wighton sentenced Canberra’s NRL fullback Jack Wighton has been given a twomonth suspended jail sentence and fined $3500 for his late-night rampage in February. Wighton, 25, pleaded guilty in June to two charges of assault occasioning bodily harm, three counts of common assault and one charge of public urination. The Raiders ace, who has played 130 NRL games, appeared for sentencing yesterday.

He was convicted on the charges and given a 12-month good behaviour bond.

Horn issues warning A furious Jeff Horn has threatened to walk away from his promoters if they misrepresent him on social media again. Promoter Dean Lonergan has taken responsibility for posts on Horn’s official social media channels over the weekend calling out opponent Anthony Mundine for his views on homosexuality. The posts were criticised as a cheap stunt to boost ticket sales for the pair’s upcoming fight in Brisbane and Horn said he had nothing to do with them, taking it down and barring promoters from accessing his social media accounts.

Federer finds form Six-times champion Roger Federer has avoided an early exit from the ATP Finals as he rediscovered his form to outclass Dominic Thiem in straight sets. The Swiss maestro needed just 66 minutes to dispatch the Austrian 6-2 6-3 while Kevin Anderson took two minutes less to crush Kei Nishikori 6-0 6-1 to take charge of the Lleyton Hewitt group.

Federer found himself with his back to the wall after an error-strewn loss to Nishikori in his opening round robin match – his first straight sets defeat in 46 group stage matches at the seasonending showpiece.

Nominations are being called to fill two Board of Director vacancies, one for each of the following electoral districts: Western North Island (WNI) Central South Island (CSI) Nominations are also being called to fill one vacancy on the Directors Independent Remuneration Committee. David Nelson, an existing member of the DIRC, will retire by rotation and has indicated that he will seek re-election.

A relatively new version of rugby which was about teaching core skills and building confidence was proving a hit in Mid Canterbury.

Quick Rip rugby is described as a safe, non-contact and easy to play version of the game, and is like a combination of Rippa Rugby and rugby sevens.

It was a concept that Mid Canterbury Rugby Union rugby development officer Jason Ree had been taking to Mid Canterbury schools for the past two or three years and this term it was again Mount Hutt

College’s turn. Once a week Ree headed to Methven to put a group of about 30 Year 7 to 9 kids, who had selected Quick Rip as their Wednesday afternoon sport option, through their paces.

In Quick Rip, players had two tags around their waist and instead of tackling the opposition, the aim was to grab one of the tags off a player with the ball. The player then had three steps to pass the ball off, and the rip was given back.

Ree said Quick Rip was for any age, but in Mid Canterbury it was teenagers that were the focus.

“It’s more looking at the teenage

market and getting them interested and giving them confidence to play, for those who are not sure about tackle rugby but want to give it a shot,” Ree said.

“It’s quite popular because kids get to express themselves and have a run around and build confidence without the threat of a big kid tackling them.”

Ree said Quick Rip was more about learning the core skills like throwing, catching and running, while three-person scrums and line-outs with lifting, gave youngsters a taste of proper rugby, just without the tackling.

Pongia opens up about cancer battle Former Kiwis hardman Quentin Pongia is in a battle to overcome cancer.

The former New Zealand test front-rower recently underwent bowel surgery and is working towards making a full recovery.

“I’m in hospital at the moment recovering from a fairly lengthy operation to remove a tumour from my bowel,” Pongia told Australia’s Wide World of Sports.

“I’m on the mend now and pray I can overcome this moving forward.”

Originally from the West Coast, the 48-year-old played 35 tests for the Kiwis throughout the 1990s, during a 13-year career in which he carved out a reputation as one of the game’s toughest players.

His uncompromising style of play saw him make an immediate impression when he arrived in the NRL after joining the star-studded Canberra side in 1993.

Pongia went on to win a premiership title with the Raiders the following year before going on to play stints with the Warriors, Roosters and Dragons as well as English

Budding young tennis players are picking up rackets and giving the sport a shot in big numbers this season.

Mid Canterbury Tennis coach Andre van Rooyen now has more than 140 young players on his books, who take part in various levels of after-school coaching at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre each week.

Van Rooyen said it had got to the stage that both the Monday and Friday Hot Shots sessions of the newest young players to the game were full, and not wanting to turn players away they had instead added Wednesday sessions.

More kids meant more coaches were needed and van Rooyen now had a number of new young coaches lending a hand in running some of the sessions for him.

Mid Canterbury Tennis had invested in its young coaches, partially subsidising five young coaches that van Rooyen had been mentoring to attend a Tennis New Zealand coaching course in Christchurch in July.

“The beauty is now we have some coaches that will be around for two or three years, some of them maybe even four years, but it’s been great that I’ve now got experienced coaches like Erin

Connelly-Whyte, so basically the other college coaches can feed off them as well,” van Rooyen said.

“The kids are enjoying the coaches and relating to them, and for me that is crucial because I can’t do everything, so I’m excited that our programme is running smoothly and nicely.”

Van Rooyen said his goal was to grow the game, and keep people playing tennis.
