Hakatere Huts residents spent most of yesterday catching up on lost sleep after being evacuated from their homes early yesterday in the wake of yesterday’s 7.5 magnitude earthquake. The earthquake, centred in the Hanmer-Kaikoura area woke many people around the Ashburton District just after midnight and while most went back to sleep Hakatere residents were forced to leave their homes as tsunami warnings were issued. At around 2am the settlement’s emergency siren was activated and police went from house to house asking people to leave the area. Resident Joy Lithgow said there was no panic when the order to leave was given. “The lower huts were very organised.

quake, Lithgow said it had been a frightening event. “When it’s in the middle of the night it’s scarier and this one went on for so long.” The quake was charted at two minutes in length. About 40 residents were also evacuated from the South Rakaia Huts settlement, although some elected to stay in their properties confident that the contour of the beach would ensure a tsunami would not hit land. Shane Webster stayed, but his wife and mother left. Rather than heading for Rakaia, he said most of the evacuees spent about four hours in their cars on higher ground waiting for the all-clear.
