The Osbournes are returning Long before we began trying to keep up with the Kardashians, The Osbournes were airing their dirty laundry with their reality TV series. And now, 10 years after Ozzy Osbourne, his wife Sharon, and kids Jack and Kelly left MTV, the series appears to be getting a revival on sibling network VH1. According to The Hollywood Reporter, VH1 is nearing a deal for more episodes of The Osbournes, which ran for four seasons on MTV. Sharon Osbourne, who co-host CBS’ The Talk, has been quite open about the show returning, saying it will probably be for six or eight episodes.

The Osbournes launched in 2002 and in the same year won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality Program.

Perry gives lesson on love in Melbourne Katy Perry’s love life has certainly been a rollercoaster ride and the pop star wasn’t affraid to give her advice on boys to a group of Melbourne school girls this week. Perry thrilled pupils at Loreto Mandeveille Hall Catholic school in Toorak by making a visit to deliver a cash prize. The US pop star handed over a cheque for $8771 after declaring the school the winner of a competition in which students were asked to make a video to demonstrate their creativity. The Firework hitmaker, who is currently on tour in Australia, also held a Q&A session with the students, during which she encouraged the girls to focus on their studies.

Alex and Corban win The Block The houses from the television reality show The Block NZ were auctioned last night in a live show. Alex and Corban’s house at 28 Newell St sold for $1,552,000. The couple will take home a $227,000 profit. Maree and James, renovators of house two at 26 Newell St, will take home $147,000, after their house sold at auction for $1.472m. “That’s all I asked for is that someone fell in love with that place,” Maree said.

“The money is a bonus.” She said it would go in their own house, or maybe a trip overseas. Canterbury based couple Quinn and Ben’s house at 26a Newell St was the first rear property to sell. Their house went for a disappointing $1.335m, meaning the young couple take home only $10,000. Stony faced during the auction, the pair tried to see the bright side of the lacklustre sale. “It’s still a lot of money,” said Quinn. The final house to be auctioned, at 28a Newell St, won Jo and Damo $61,000, after it sold for $1.386m.

James Gandolfini in hall of fame Six cast members of The Sopranos were on hand as the man who played mob boss Tony Soprano was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame. James Gandolfini died in Italy last year. In comments before the ceremony in Asbury Park’s Convention Hall, Vincent Pastore, who played mobster Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero, said Gandolfini was a Jersey guy through and through. He says Gandolfini never missed a chance to let people know how great his home state is. Other inductees include NBC News anchor Brian Williams, jazz great Dizzy Gillespie, chef Alice Waters, author Dorothy Parker, basketball great Patrick Ewing, The Shirelles and former Governor Jim Florio.

Sambora quits Bon Jovi Richie Sambora will not be returning to Bon Jovi. All of the speculation on guitarist Richie Sambora and Bon Jovi has finally been put to rest. “He quit. He’s gone. No hard feelings. Being in a band isn’t a life sentence,” frontman Jon Bon Jovi confirmed to showbiz411.com. Trouble between Sambora and the band was nothing new, but it seemed to have come to a head in April 2013 when the band announced he had left due to personal reasons. In lateApril, Jon Bon Jovi insisted that Sambora was “absolutely still part of the band” even though he was left out of the rest of their Because We Can Tour. Since that time, Sambora has remained active developing a solo career although fans remained hopeful he would return to the band.

Poverty concerns grow

Ashburton Intermediate School’s breakfast programme is facing an uncertain future as more Mid Canterbury principals raise concerns about children turning up to school hungry.

It seems to be a growing issue in the region, with some schools having to provide breakfast and lunch to students in need.

Educators approached by the Guardian last week said the problem was worrying and now more principals have come forward to share their concerns.

The breakfast programme at Ashburton Intermediate School is only guaranteed to run until the end of the school year, according to principal Gavin Cooper.

The school’s Board of Trustees had not yet decided how much, if any, funding to put towards running a programme next year, he said.

The programme, which Mr Cooper referred to as a dropin centre, was originally only supposed to run for the colder months during terms two and three, but demand had seen it extended into term four.

“In an ideal world parents would feed their kids, but for a variety of reasons that sometimes doesn’t happen,” he said.

The school also had to provide shoes for some students, Mr Cooper said.

Some schools across the region were providing breakfast, lunch and snacks to their pupils, as well as some items of uniform.

Rakaia School principal Mark Ellis said the changing dynamic of the community had seen a major increase in children coming to school without food.

“We’re feeding more children this year than ever before,” he

said. Mr Ellis said the school received a donation of $40 per week from a “generous benefactor” to purchase groceries to feed hungry pupils.

Ashburton College principal Grant McMillan told the Guardian last week he was aware that for some families, things such as food and uniforms could be an issue, but he declined to comment on the size of the problem at the college.

MP for Rangitata Jo Goodhew said she was aware that social services in the district did a lot of work to assist families that were struggling.

Ms Goodhew said the government was spending, nationally, $6.6 million each year on fruit in schools, for decile one and two schools.

There are no schools in Mid Canterbury below a decile three

rating.

The problem does not appear to be limited to school children, with the number of families asking for assistance from community groups also increasing.

Ashburton Salvation Army captain Ken Smith said the organisation’s foodbank was distributing 10 to 12 food parcels per week. Demand had grown in recent weeks.

A number of shelves at the foodbank were often bare and there was “definitely a need” for food parcels in the area, he said.

According to data from the 2013 census, 31.7 per cent of people aged 15 years and over in the Ashburton District have an annual income of $20,000 or less.

Mr Smith believed part of the problem was a lack of financial education.

“It’s about knowing what to do with the money that you’ve got,” he said.

Effects not felt evenly The founder of a local charity says children arriving at school hungry is a serious problem in Mid Canterbury but some educators suggest the need is not evenly felt across all parts of the district.

Fruit Fund founder Deirdre Moses’ concern follows Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president Chris Murphy last week saying the number of students going to school without food had increased.

Mr Murphy attributed the rise to Mid Canterbury’s recent population boom and Mrs Moses believed people did not realise how big the problem was in the region.

Fruit Fund is a local charity that donates fruit, fruit trees and other food to schools and pre-schools. It was catering to a definite demand, Mrs Moses indicated.

“I’m still flabbergasted by the amount of people who say ‘we don’t need that in Ashburton, do we?’,” she said.

A recent national report suggested as many as one-in-four children live below the poverty line.

Other schools have declined donations, saying others need them more than they do.

Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said while some pupils arrived without lunch “from time to time”, there was not enough demand to require food parcels.

St Joseph’s School principal Janet Cummings said the school “very, very rarely” had children arriving without food: “We would rather it go to schools that need it,” she said, referring to food donations.

Big day specially for children

By Michelle NelsoN It was all about the children at the Canterbury A&P Show on Thursday.

Hundreds of youngsters from inner city schools took a rare opportunity to get a taste of what life may be like for their country counterparts.

And the country kids brought their pets to town for a glimpse of all the raucous fun of the fair.

A “maternity” ward, where spectators could watch lambs born in real time was a draw card for the crowd, but the ewes seemed less impressed by finding themselves the centre of attention.

The livestock pavilions were also a popular destination for children and families.

In the petting area a mob of patient pet lambs were a big hit, along with a box of Croziers turkey poults all the way from Ashburton.

However, most people gave a grumpy-looking gobbler a wide berth.

For many of the children it was the first time they had been so close to the bigger ani-

The planned opening date for Ashburton’s temporary Work and Income office in the Ashburton Police Station yard has been pushed back by two days. Originally due to open on November 24, the Ministry of Social Development yesterday said the opening was now likely to be November 26. Seven large portacoms were placed on the site this week and they’re now being fitted out with electrics and plumbing. The portacoms will provide 390sqm of working space.

Fatal crash

City families took a rare opportunity to get close to farm animals.

A man has died in a crash on the Northern Motorway, north of Auckland. Police say a man driving a car which hit the median barrier has died at the scene. He was the only person in the vehicle. The crash occurred in the southbound lane by Rosedale Rd, just south of Albany yesterday. The two centre lanes, both southbound and northbound, were blocked as a result of the crash. All emergency services responded to the scene.

Only one drink-driver nabbed

One of Mid Canterbury’s first big drink driving operations of the summer nabbed one suspected drink driver on Thursday night.

With less than three weeks to go until New Zealand’s drink driving limit is lowered, the Christchurch based booze bus paid Ashburton a visit and stopped 1069 cars at two checkpoints – Racecourse Road and Archibald Street immediately south of the bridge – during the evening.

Sergeant John Harris from the Christchurch traffic alcohol group said a driver who initially attempted to evade police was quickly apprehended and underwent excess breath alcohol procedures. The result was a fail.

“This person was making their way to Invercargill on State Highway 1 and charges are pending awaiting results of EBA blood analysis,” Mr Harris said.

The driver was suspended from driving for 28 days.

Ashburton Police sergeant Janine Bowden said with the festive season approaching, and the drink driving limit about to be lowered, drivers now more than ever, needed to think ahead about how they were going to get to their destination safely.

The drink driving limit for adults (over 20) will change from 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath (mcg/l) to 250mcg/l – or from 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, to 50mg - on December 1. The limit for under-20s will remain at zero.

From December 1, drivers who return levels over 400mcg/l will continue to face criminal sanctions as is currently the case. Results between 251mcg/l and 400mcg/l will not receive a criminal conviction, instead they’ll get an infringement fee of $200 and 50 demerit points.

Drivers who accumulate 100 or more demerit points from driving offences within two years will receive a three month suspension from driving.

The Christchurch based police booze bus visited Ashburton on Thursday night and stopped one suspected drink driver.

Bid to blackmail man who later killed himself By roB kidd

In the three months between being charged with sexually abusing a boy and murdering the victim’s father, Phillip John Smith tried to extort $25,000 from a man who later killed himself, court documents reveal.

Judicial files released to NZME yesterday show Smith – who was arrested in a Brazilian hostel On Wednesday after five days on the run – attempted to blackmail someone for $25,000 just days after being bailed on a raft of sexual charges.

After three years of repeated abuse of the boy, aged between 10 and 13, the victim finally told his parents and Smith was charged on September 12, 1995.

On December 11, Smith tracked down the family to a Wellington address, at which they had been located in a bid to evade him, and stabbed the boy’s father to death in the front of the whole family.

Details of the horrific offending have been rehashed since he escaped Waikato’s Spring Hill prison but court papers show there was more offending between September 28 and October 10, 1995.

According to charge sheets, he “threatened to make a disclosure about [the victim] of sexual misconduct, namely sexual indecencies”.

The man’s response was to leave information for police before killing himself.

“The consequences of what you have done have been great. The man you threatened is dead,” Justice Paul Neazor said.

“Another person who worked with him has found his position financially and emotionally severely harmed.”

At sentencing in April, 1996 – three months before his trial on the murder and abuse charges – Justice Neazor jailed him for two and a half years.

The judge said the crime was done “callously for gain” and highlighted the significance of the fact Smith was on bail for the sexual offending at the time.

“You simply destroyed this man’s peace of mind and were content to cause whatever followed for the sake of making some substantial gain,” he said, Smith faced the blackmail charge along with two other people but their identities, as well as that of the victim, were permanently suppressed by Justice Neazor. The charges against the other two were later dropped.

In the judgement it was also revealed Smith had some 20 convictions for previous offending, which involved dishonesty, wilful damage and assault.

Another scam doing rounds

Be wary when you answer your phone, another phone scam appears to be doing the rounds.

A concerned Mid Canterbury woman contacted the Guardian yesterday after receiving a phone call from someone claiming to be from the New Zealand Government Grants Board.

The caller said because she’d “been good and paid all her taxes and had not been declared bankrupt” in the past few months she was to receive a grant of between $6000 and $8000.

Upon further questioning though, it emerged that the recipient would have to pay a fee up front to claim that money.

According to New Zealand’s Consumer Affairs website, it’s a scam. It appears on their scam alert page, described as one using real, or real-sounding government department names – something some scammers do

Treaty ruling ‘distorted’ A history professor has criticised a Waitangi Tribunal decision that Maori chiefs who signed the Treaty of Waitangi did not cede sovereignty as “distorting New Zealand history”. Treaty specialist Paul Moon said the Tribunal’s inquiry got basic historical aspects wrong. “I was shocked by some of the statements contained in the report,” says the Auckland University of Technology professor.

“This is not a concern about some trivial detail, but over the fundamental history of our country, which the Tribunal has got manifestly wrong.”

Consumer Affairs’ advice is simple. They’re urging people to be cautious and if you receive an unsolicited call and the caller requests personal information, it may be a scam. They advise people to hang up and verify who they are by independently finding their contact details from a trustworthy source like a phone book and contacting them directly.

Personal information and financial details should never be provided by anyone who has contacted you out of the blue, even if they claim to be from a reputable company or Government department – it may still be a scam.

Consumer Affairs says anyone who receives a call from someone claiming they’re entitled to a refund, have won a holiday or have a virus on their computer, to hang up immediately.

A pilot has escaped a light aircraft crash in western Southland yesterday afternoon. A plane spreading fertiliser crashed just before 1pm, on a property near Mt Linton Rd, near Ohai. The pilot of the plane, a 43-year-old Gore man, called in the crash. He was treated by paramedics at the scene before being flown to Southland Hospital with moderate to severe injuries.

The Civil Aviation Authority had been notified.

Ashburton’s river-side cycle and walking track is in top order for the summer riding season.

Last weekend a family fun day was held on the track, with a large number of walkers and cyclists travelling over several of its sections.

The hardy and the fit cycled the full 19 kilometres from the Ashburton River Bridge to the Hakatere settlement on the coast.

A group of volunteers has formed a committee to oversee track use and maintenance and most of the physical work on keeping it open and able to be ridden, is carried out by community groups said committee member, Ashburton District councillor Russell Ellis.

“Quite a lot of work’s been done on it in recent months and it’s all been sprayed. The whole track is looking really good,” he said.

“Different groups do different sections of the track but the council will help out if needed, with something like a tree coming down.”

The Mid Canterbury Mountain Bike Club maintains the section of track from Melrose Road to the Ashburton River bridge.

The river trail can be accessed from a number of points between the Ashburton River Bridge and Hakatere.

On the southern side of the Ashburton River, the Braided Rivers trail provides an easy 7 kilometre riding or walking track to Lake Hood.

A house fire which broke out in Huntly at 1pm is being treated as suspicious. Three fire appliances arrived at the Bond St property just after the alarm was raised to find the house completely ablaze.

Northern Fire Service shift manager Jarron Phillips said the fire was being treated as suspicious. No one was at the house when the fire broke out, he said.

Castle Hill scrub fire A small scrub fire has broken out in Castle Hill in Canterbury.

Fire appliances from Springfield, Sheffield and Arthurs Pass were having difficulty getting to the blaze so a helicopter was to be sent to the scene, Northern Fire Service shift manager Jarron Philips said.

Lawyer struck off A former Auckland lawyer has been struck off after being convicted of theft, the Law Society says. Minkai Huang earlier admitted a charge that he had been convicted of an offence punishable by imprisonment which reflected on his fitness to practise and tended to bring the legal profession into disrepute, Law Society president Chris Moore said.

Huang had been convicted of theft and sentenced to community work for taking $9500 of fees from a client and failing to account for them.

Rudd and AC/DC Australian rockers AC/DC have said Phil Rudd’s absence following his arrest will not affect their world tour or upcoming album, Rock or Bust. The drummer was arrested last week for attempting to arrange a double murder but the charges were dropped 24 hours later. Rudd still faces a charge of threatening to kill, which comes with a maximum prison term of seven years, and charges of possessing methamphetamine and marijuana.

Jaxon’s future uncertain

Jaxon Smith is a bubbly, enthusiastic and playful little boy. He loves his trucks and playing with his friends, but every day is a challenge.

The Ashburton youngster is one of a handful of children in New Zealand with a complicated condition that means he is unable to walk.

Cerebellar hypoplasia is an incurable condition that affects muscle tone and strength. It can affect speech, walking and balance, and can result in seizures or intellectual disability.

Jaxon’s mum, Chelsea Prendergast, said her son was born a happy, healthy, full term baby but that now, three years later, he was unable to walk.

Her boy was healthy but was not reaching the usual milestones in child development.

He did not sit on his own until he was 11 months old and did not stand alone until he was 18 months old.

Miss Prendergast’s GP was not sure what was happening and a paediatrician believed Jaxon may have had muscular dystrophy. A blood test proved this was not the case.

By the age of two Jaxon had started shaking uncontrollably when he would get excited.

That was when Miss Prendergast decided to go to a specialist.

“I ended up going private because nothing was getting done.”

An MRI showed Jaxon’s cerebellum (located at the base of the brain) was small and not properly formed. It was then he was diagnosed with cerebellar hypoplasia.

Specialists are still not sure why his cerebellum is not fully developed. They are not sure if it happened in the womb or during childbirth, Miss Prendergast said.

Jaxon’s specialist, child and adolescent neurologist Dr Paul Shillito, said the condition is very rare. He has only seen half a dozen to a dozen children with it.

Dr Shillito said usually it was a developmental condition and unfortunately there was no cure. “There is no underlying corrective treatment,” he said.

Today, Jaxon cannot walk, stand for long periods of time and has trouble with fine motor skills such as feeding himself or drinking from a cup without a straw.

Miss Prendergast said Jaxon was also slightly delayed in his speech.

“It is extremely frustrating not knowing, he might not walk, we just don’t know,” Miss Prendergast said.

Teacher struck off A primary school teacher has been struck off the register after being convicted of benefit fraud to the tune of $107,000. Craig Morehu Teddy, 41, of Opotiki, was deregistered last month for committing the “very serious fraud” in part while he was a teacher. He was found guilty of fraud charges in Whakatane District Court in November last year, according to a Teachers’ Disciplinary Tribunal decision.

The tribunal said it had little difficulty deciding Teddy should be deregistered, as the very serious fraud involving a substantial amount of money had, in part, been committed while he was a teacher.

Rapist sentenced A Rotorua man has been sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment for raping an intellectually impaired woman.

Ngaiterangi Tomo, 28, was found guilty by a jury in September on one count of raping the woman on May 29, 2011. He was sentenced in the Rotorua District Court yesterday by Judge James Weir.

According to the police summary of facts, the woman, who has a mental age of 12-14 and lived with her parents, went outside to her sleepout about 10.30pm. Ten to 15 minutes later she returned to the house in a stressed condition and said she was raped. Forensic samples returned were compatible with Tomo’s DNA profile. - NZME

Miss Prendergast also looked into getting Jaxon into the Champion Centre, which helps children with complex disabilities, but was told they did not live in the right zone.

Champion Centre director Susan Foster-Cohen earlier this week confirmed the centre, which is in Christchurch, could not serve children in Ashburton as it was “outside the catchment area”.

Miss Prendergast said she would consider moving if that was what it took to get Jaxon the help he needed.

She has started a Facebook page to support Jaxon and to help find someone else with the same condition.

The page had more than 700 likes in two days.

It’s enough to make a tomato blush. A Wanganui group researching tomatoes has come to the conclusion orange ones are best. The Heritage Food Crops Research Trust has found golden-orange tomatoes were considerably better than red varieties at reducing heart disease and some cancers. Spokesman Mark Christensen said he is convinced red tomatoes are “a breeding error”.

Vandals sought Te Anau police and the Department of Conservation are on the hunt for gun-toting vandals, who they said would be prosecuted “to the full extent of the law” after extensively damaging a hut at the Mavora Lakes. Fiordland District conservation services manager Grant Tremain said the damage to Boundary Hut, estimated to cost at least $7500 to repair, was the most extensive he had seen in 20 years of looking after huts and campsites.

George makes an early entrance Monday is World Prematurity Day. Reporter Caitlin Porter talks to a Mid Canterbury couple about the early birth of their baby and about life in a neonatal care unit.

ith a fluffy head of hair, alert and gurgling contentedly in mum’s arms, you never would have guessed that just eight weeks ago baby George was in the Christchurch Women’s Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Baby George was born prematurely and arrived at just 35 weeks. Parents, Belinda Rawlinson and Tom Waddell, were not prepared for an early birth and said the experience was a scary one.

According to The Neonatal Trust’s website, every year about 10 per cent of babies are born prematurely - or before the end of the 37th week of pregnancy - in New Zealand.

That is, one born every 90 minutes.

World Prematurity Day is on Monday and is a day that aims to raise awareness of babies born prematurely. The day was officially launched in 2011.

Now, it is recognised in more than 50 countries worldwide and The Neonatal Trust in New Zealand is an organisation that supports the day.

On Monday, September 15, Belinda started experiencing muscle pain under her ribs, but she thought it was nothing of concern. That all changed on Tuesday morning at 2.15am when Belinda woke thinking she needed to use the bathroom – in reality her waters had broken.

“I got to the bathroom and called out to Tom that he had better call the midwife.”

They contacted their midwife and were at Ashburton Hospital by 3am, hurrying in from Westerfield.

“We hadn’t packed a bag or anything,” Belinda said.

Belinda experienced her first contraction on the way in to town, not far from the Tinwald Pony Club.

After arriving at Ashburton Hospital, she was rushed through to Christchurch Wom-

en’s Hospital in an ambulance.

“Everything was moving very quickly.”

Belinda’s obstetrician Ben Sharp was on hand when Belinda arrived, as was a medical student, also named Ben – both of whom Belinda said were great.

“We called them big Ben and little Ben,” she laughed.

The NICU were also notified of Belinda and Tom’s arrival and at 5.47pm George William Waddell entered the world at 5 pounds 14 ounces.

“There was a fair bit of yelling but no swearing,” Belinda said.

George’s birth was all natural, Belinda was even told to put the laughing gas away so she could focus.

“Your body just takes over,

your body knows best,” she said, “I was so proud I got through a natural birth.

“Tom cut the cord and the paediatrician checked he was okay. He came out and screamed which was a good sign. Then we had about an hour of skin to skin, the midwife could hear his breathing getting croaky then so she called the paediatrician back.”

The paediatrician checked George and just as he was being weighed, he stopped breathing and Belinda and Tom were told he had an apnea of prematurity - when an infant stops breathing for a short period.

Belinda clearly remembers being in birthing suite 302 and from there George was whisked off to the NICU. “He was hooked up to moni-

tors and had a CPAP mask on with big tubes and a wee hat and monitors on his feet and hands.”

Belinda and Tom only spent two and a half days at Christchurch Women’s before going to Ronald McDonald House, which Belinda said was fantastic.

Unfortunately George’s jaundice levels came up and he had to be put into a billy bed, with phototherapy lights. Jaundice is when the skin turns yellow because of a build-up of bilirubin that isn’t breaking down fast enough. The lights convert the

bilirubin to a form that can be excreted by the baby.

George was also on caffeine shots that went through a food tube to stimulate his breathing.

After a week in the NICU, George turned a corner and came off the breathing machine. The unit is broken up into six rooms which babies progress through and George was allowed to go home after two weeks.

Belinda said some babies in the NICU had been there for months, and she was originally told that often babies can’t go home until their due date.

It was a particularly busy time for the NICU, usually there are 38 babies being cared for and whilst George was there, there were 52. This meant visiting numbers were restricted and only parents were allowed in.

Belinda said the time spent with Tom and George over the few weeks George was in the hospital resulted in them having more time to bond as a family.

All in all, Belinda and Tom said it was a scary time and one that they do not want to have to go through again.

“You didn’t really know what was going on,” she said.

Belinda said it is important to understand that having a baby prematurely is something that can happen to anyone, no matter how young or old and the best thing to do is be prepared.

“All you really need is a car seat and a baby bag,” said Tom. The next step for George is getting his ears tested every week for six weeks, from there Belinda will keep in touch with the midwife and Plunket to see what other check-ups George needs.

The hardest part of the

whole experience, Belinda said, is not knowing why George came early.

“I’m annoyed that I don’t know why.”

The Neonatal Trust state that a problem in researching the causes of premature births is a lack of adequate data.

However it reveals some of the most frequent causes from worldwide data obtained in 2010 can be vaginal infections (which are responsible for around 50 per cent of premature births) smoking, diet and stress, elderly prima gravida (a mother carrying her first child at the age of 35 years or older) or multiple births.

The website also states that it is important to remember premature babies are not just small, often they face challenges throughout their childhood.

An early birth is not something that is forgotten about once the baby gets home from hospital, some premature babies can have developmental delays, respiratory tract diseases, motor disorders and attention disorders.

George has been a very well behaved baby since getting home, he has moved from a

bassinet to a cot, he only wakes once a night – “knock on wood” said Belinda – and has already been on his first tractor ride with dad.

Belinda and Tom credit everyone that helped them with George and said the only plans for right now are to just enjoy their little baby boy. The last few weeks have been hectic for the family as they are in the process of building a new house which they hope to be in by Christmas.

“We are hoping for a relaxing 2015,” laughed Belinda.

Recipes ‘a gift to share’

Being a good baker is not something that’s bound up in your DNA, says well-known foodie, chef and entertainer Jo Seagar.

She was in Ashburton on Wednesday talking food, talking about her favourite charity, Hospice New Zealand, promoting her latest book, Jo Seagar Bakes, and doing her best to inspire her audience to turn on the oven and start baking.

Her latest book is intended to become a go-to book for home cooks.

It’s filled with recipes from her aunts, grandmothers and family friends and it’s designed to fill the gap for today’s cooks who don’t have a cooking family to fall back on.

Baking, Jo says, is a learned skill rather than an inherited one.

“There are lots of people out there who would like to have had a Walton’s family kind of upbringing and think baking is not in their DNA because of that, but anybody can learn if they have a good guide; I try to be the old woman’s shoulder they can lean on,” she said.

She has tested those recipes, ironed out the crinkles, found out what could go wrong and reshaped them to make each as simple and fool proof as possible. Follow the recipe and you can’t go wrong. Your reward will be the thing every cook craves – praise.

No matter how long you’ve been cooking, you always enjoy the satisfaction of knowing the people eating your food are enjoying your food, she said.

Her latest book has been

years in the making, probably 54, Jo said.

“I’ve been cooking since I was six and this is a lifetime of recipes. Some of them I’ve probably made 400 times.”

This book might be about baking, but Jo says she enjoys cooking just as much as she does getting out the cake mixer and her baking tins.

“People think I’m large and jolly so I make cakes and yes, I’m a bloody good baker, but I love getting my family around, getting people around the table too.”

“I loved nursing but it was nice to be doing something for myself, running restaurants and waving a whisk around. It’s good to have change in your life and I guess I’ve managed to be in the right place at the right time.”

Jo still lives at Oxford, still keeps a guiding hand on her café, but most of her home base time is now spent in her cooking school.

She has more than 15 cook books to her credit, tours New Zealand raising money for Hospice New Zealand and giving

She’s not a chef who is precious about her recipes. They’re a gift made to share.

Unlike many chefs who start in the industry in their teens, Jo trained as a nurse and midwife, working in New Zealand and overseas. The career change came while she was a member of the British heart team, a chance to study at the London Cordon Bleu school was too good to pass up. That was followed by a stint at La Barenne in Paris and her food career was launched.

She’s just back from Morocco, takes two or three trips a year to Italy and has a middle European tour in the wings. Those trips are about food, wine and having a good time.

“I’ve done the hard travelling and sharing toilets stuff, now I’m a matching luggage kind of traveller.”

Jo loves what she does, but admits it’s not the fast track to being a millionaire.

“I don’t have much money in the bank but I’m very happy be-

ing Jo, very happy being in my life. I have a lovely husband, he’s well fed, even if he’s left home alone a lot.”

The work that is possibly closest to her heart, however, is her role as patron of Hospice New Zealand.

Jo has been a voluntary Hospice Ambassador since 1999 and Patron since December 2010.

She sees her role as helping educate the public about the role of the hospice and its philosophy of care.

“There are a lot of people who don’t understand what hospice is all about and part of my role is to help educate the public. Hospice is not a building; it is a philosophy of care.”

Her generation, she says, is the generation that changed attitudes to birth, making it a natural process and it’s her generation that is driving changed attitudes to dying, she said.

Right now she’s looking forward to Christmas and the chance to create a special occasion.

“There’s nothing nicer than sitting people down around your table. One year I’m terribly formal and the next it might be a barbecue. I do love traditional things and I don’t think a tomato sandwich can be seen as a Christmas dinner.

You need to make an effort, to celebrate the traditions of the past. Do something special – whatever that is.”

No matter how often she cooks or where she’s cooking, Jo says she never tires of being in the kitchen; it’s just the clean up afterwards she’s not so keen on.

Pack your sunhat and your picnic basket and head to the Ashburton Domain on November 30 for a party that’s been a century and a half in the making.

Ashburton’s domain is celebrating its 150th birthday and there’s an open invitation to join the big event in a family day that will wrap up festivities that started two weeks ago with a stone carving symposium.

The line-up of activities and entertainment will include something for everyone, Ashburton District Council open spaces manager David Askin says, and will include a concert by the Ashburton Civic Music Council, food and craft stalls, 20/20 cricket matches, a teddy bears’ picnic and a guided tour of the domain.

There will be an opportunity to try your hand at croquet and bowls as the Waireka Croquet and Ashburton Bowling Clubs will hold an open day.

One of the big events on the day will be an auction of carvings created during the first two weeks of the celebrations.

The Mt Somers stone, Timaru bluestone and West Coast granite carvings will be auctioned at 1.30pm on the Long Lawn adjacent to the layby off West Street.

“We’re keen to see people pack a picnic and spend the day soaking up the celebratory atmosphere and enjoying all there is to see and do in one of the best spots in Ashburton,” Mr Askin said.

“Weather-permitting, the recently-reopened paddling pool will also be an inviting spot for little ones keen for a swim.”

The guided tour of the domain will take place at 11.30am, leaving from the Parks and Open Spaces office inside the large black wrought iron gates on West Street.

A teddy bears’ picnic will be held next to the paddling pool from 11.30am to 1.30pm and will feature a magician, face painting, a dance competition and egg and spoon racing.

Planning under way for Christmas lunch

Planning for the Ashburton Christmas community lunch has started early with the first official committee meeting taking place earlier this week.

Co-ordinator Ann Allott said the lunch would be held at the Sinclair Centre again this year.

Mrs Allott said a few dona-

tions had already been made but the committee was happy to accept any donations that people were willing to give – be it food or money. The money would be used to buy things that were not donated or perishable, Mrs Allott said.

Committee member Ross Allott said many people from all over the district attended the

lunch. “Elderly people, people who are home alone for Christmas, families with kids,” he said.

Last year nearly 150 people enjoyed a full Christmas feast and about 60 volunteers helped out.

This year Dan Lysaght of All Fed Up Catering Company would be helping out with the cooking and carving of the

meat as well as the cooking of the vegetables.

“We are going to do all the meat through the spit-roast and it will all be done on site,” he said.

Diners would be served a true Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, as well as dessert and Christmas cake.

event and Santa Claus was also expected to make an appearance.

Registration forms for the lunch will be in Monday’s Ashburton Guardian.

Rakaia hero remembered for dedicated service

A stalwart of the Rakaia community was farewelled last week, but Lyndsay Smith will be remembered for his decades of dedicated service to his beloved home town.

Lyndsay was something of a local hero in the Rakaia area, serving as a member of the Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade for 34 years, with many of those years as the Chief Fire Officer.

A keen rugby player, Lyndsay also found his way into the history books when he played as a lock in the legendary Mid Canterbury team that triumphed over Australia during their 1964 rugby union tour of New Zealand.

However, despite his numerous achievements and status in the community, his wife of 52 years, Judith Smith, said the

unassuming Lyndsay was simply “ours”.

The youngest of four children, Lyndsay was the baby of his family.

The saying “it takes a village to raise a child” was particularly true of Lyndsay’s upbringing, as the Rakaia community rallied to help bring him up after the death of his mother when Lyndsay was just seven years old.

He attended Rakaia Primary School and later Ashburton Technical School, which he left at the age of 15 to take up a role at a local sawmill.

However the sawmill was not for him, and he found his true calling at the age of 20 when he started work as a linesman at the Rakaia Post and Telegraph depot, where worked for nearly 30 years.

Lyndsay moved through the ranks of the company, eventually serving as the foreman of

the depot. His years of service to the community began at the age of 15, when he joined his father and older brother at the Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade.

He started out as a messenger for the brigade, biking around the town delivering messages to other firefighters.

During more than three decades of service he rose to the rank of Chief Fire Officer, as well as receiving the Gold Star for 25 years of service.

He was also made an honorary life member of the brigade, and served as a member of the Rakaia Lions club, a Rakaia Scouts master, and a Resource Recovery volunteer.

Not long after joining the brigade, Lyndsay met his future wife, Judith, after befriending her brothers.

“I told the kids the other day, that Uncle David brought him home and I kept him,” Judith recalls, laughing at the mem-

ory. Lyndsay was sadly forced to retire from both the fire brigade and his job when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at the age of 49.

However he stayed positive and continued to make the most of life, with his trademark dry sense of humour remaining intact.

An avid golfer, he also travelled to Las Vegas and Perth to take part in the World Firefighter Games.

He was a proud grandfather and loved being around his 10 grandchildren, keeping in touch with them through postcards and email.

Two years ago he moved into Tuarangi Home to receive care, and he sadly passed away surrounded by family on November 6, at the age of 74.

Lyndsay is survived by his wife Judith, four children, and 10 grandchildren.

Leading by example, It has been a tough year for the Labour Party, and for party stalwart Glen Cameron of Rakaia. The 52-year-old spoke to reporter Susan Sandys.

I

n 1991, Glen Cameron had a workplace accident which was to change the course of his life.

At the Airfoods meat processing plant at Christchurch Airport, a forklift hit a frame and pushed it onto the fingers of his right hand, crushing two of them.

He had two jobs at the time, as well as training horses on his 20-acre block at West Melton and raising a young family. His second job was cleaning at St Bede’s School in the evenings.

A doctor told him the injury was severe bruising, and he went back to work, getting by even though he couldn’t use the two outer fingers of his right hand.

But as time went on, his fingers did not heal. The skin died off and the pain was constant.

Eighteen months after the accident his specialist decided the fingers needed to come off, but with recent changes to ACC laws it would be a two-year wait for surgery.

He battled ACC but ended up paying for the $3000 operation himself, although he was later reimbursed by the corporation.

“The frustration of not being able to work and get them fixed … with my father’s values and listening to him over the years, he always believed in fairness, and I could just see this was so wrong,” Mr Cameron said.

Mr Cameron’s father was well known unionist, rights activist and Labour Party member, the late Wes Cameron.

As such Mr Cameron grew up with politics all around him. Many a weekend was spent at protests and rallies, and throughout the years he and his father could count as family friends the likes of Mike Moore, David Lange, Bob Hawke and Rob Muldoon.

the Labour way age of 15 and had a successful early career in the harness racing industry. The youngest of six children, he lived with his father in his late teens after his parents separated. While he and his dad had some “good feisty discussions” on politics, Mr Cameron did not see a future in it for himself, believing that was more his father’s thing.

However, the workplace accident changed all that. He thought it was time to get involved, and time to have a voice.

“I didn’t follow it, it sort of followed me,” he said of politics.

Mr Cameron’s Labour Party roles have included chairman of the party’s Canterbury regional council and north of the South Island representative on the national council, and he stood on the Labour Party list leading up to the party’s 1999 election win.

Following the election, he suffered a period of ill-health with cellulitis, and this made him reassess and decide a public political career was not for him.

“I’m happy now sharing my advice, and helping the party, and focusing my energy on nurturing new candidates, and helping make the party again what it once was and will be again,” he said.

In April last year Mr Cameron became the chairman of the Rangitata electorate’s Labour Electorate Committee. With 18 months to go until election time he hoped he could make a difference, but he wasn’t to know one of the worst periods in the Labour Party’s history was in front of him.

A personal friend of David Cunliffe’s, Mr Cameron had backed the former government minister all the way.

“I thought he had the integrity and the ability to become a

great prime minister, I still believe he has those capabilities.”

And while he remains great friends with Mr Cunliffe, the same can not be said for former Rangitata candidate Steve Gibson, who became known for his random outbursts throughout the election campaign.

“I’m sure he feels like he’s let himself down as well.”

Mr Cameron said he takes some responsibility for the poor choice of electorate candidate, and in the upcoming Labour Party review has “some strong recommendations” to ensure candidates chosen are the right ones.

They include that candidates be known by party members for some time before they are appointed, and are trusted to handle stressful situations

appropriately. Secondly, he believes a group of potential candidates need to be selected well in advance of the election, at least 18 months beforehand, and they be sent to the party’s candidate training college and conferences, “so that people have experience at that higher party level”.

“We obviously got things wrong. We have had a good look at ourselves,” Mr Cameron said.

He said it is that same sense of fairness his father had that continues to instil in him today a wish for a better New Zealand under Labour.

ing room, is a good employer.

He has been there for 12 years, and the 50-or-so workers there are covered by a collective agreement. Staff also belong to the meatworkers’ union, for which Mr Cameron is a Canterbury Westland organiser.

“It’s a good company. When we go to negotiate, they are fair and reasonable.”

As well as his workplace accident, Mr Cameron has another experience in his past which has cemented his political convictions.

In 2002 he took a job on a fishing trawler at Wellington.

There were seven staff on a smallish boat where the shower and toilet were broken, and there were not enough hours in the day to undertake all the work required.

“Sometimes you would get one hour’s sleep,” he said.

It was the sort of abuse of worker rights which continued in various shades throughout the country to this day. And if there were not people prepared to fight for worker rights, they would be lost, he said.

“Saying we have a rock star economy and everything is fine and it’s just going to trickle down, it just doesn’t happen,” Mr Cameron said.

Mr Cameron is a keen boatie and fisherman, and likes to get out regularly with friends and family in his six-and-a-half metre vessel.

He has two adult sons, Scotty who has just returned from the University of York on a gap year, and Philip who is an engineer in London.

id Canterbury’s consistent growth is proving a double edged sword for some of the people who drive our economy.

Employers are shelling out big bucks to find the staff they need to keep their businesses growing – or, in many cases, just to keep up with demand.

Ordinarily, this would not make headlines: after all, it makes sense that businesses would have to pay competitive rates to get decent results.

But in the cases that hit the headlines this week, some employers were paying what amounted to finders’ fees to anyone who could find them staff.

Megan and Brent Christie were ready to give $500 to whoever finds them a sparky after advertising all over the country – and Australia – failed.

They borrow tradespeople from other branches but things were just as tight elsewhere.

Ashburton contracting heavyweight ACL has looked to the Philippines to find new staff.

Overseas recruitment has become commonplace in the rural sector, with new migrants adding to growing operations and to the cultural makeup of the hinterland.

It is fantastic when it works but indications are that the skills shortage has become so acute in some areas that some businesses are only growing as much as staffing allows.

Part of the problem was not-too-long-ago touted as part of the solution to New Zealand’s economic slowdown. The Christchurch rebuild is gobbling up skills faster than the regions can attract them.

The rebuild – well, the earthquakes – have also contributed to the gradual rise in the cost of housing in Mid Canterbury as investors look to the regions for property.

Rents are about a third of the average wage and demand, pushed on by competitive wages in a competitive labour market, suggests these won’t go south any time soon.

This is the environment in which employers are trying to attract new, skilled staff to their jobs and to our region. Frankly, success is making things hard.

With this sort of challenge, national news about zero hour contracts, negotiating meal breaks and exploited labour seem a world away.

’ve been away from home quite a bit recently, with forays to Auckland, Wellington, Whangamata, and Vietnam interspersed with country living.

All of this travel has made me see the good side of Methven every time I return: the hills for hiking, the back roads for running the dog, the wide open skies, the fact that everything is well within walking distance.

It’s also got me thinking about what “home” really means.

Three years ago when I moved down south, “home” was smack bang in the middle of Auckland. It meant volcanoes, bustling spaces, a harbour, and quadruple-lane highways.

Having spent the past week amongst said volcanoes and traffic jams, I realised that “home” has migrated south: I used to use the term when heading to Auckland for the weekend, but now it applies to the other direction.

Rooted to the land, it plodded southward, step by step, until

the tipping point was reached, and instead of “going home” to Auckland we “came to visit”.

So, what is it that has changed? The main difference would have to be our state of mind. To understand this fully, it pays to look one generation back. Our parents still live in the city, but our move to the country represents a reverse migration pattern to our parents: They grew up rurally and moved to the big smoke, whereas we grew up in the city and have moved away.

Everyone wants the best for their families, so they move where there are opportunities.

I am very glad to have grown

up in a city with such a mix of people around me, but I am equally glad to have experienced a different side of the country we all call home.

This generational ping-pong that has happened in our family, and many others, is actually a really good thing.

Moving south, we’ve had the opportunity to witness a different way of living and of looking at the world. We’ve seen the both sides of the contentious Auckland vs Everything– South-of-the-Bombay-Hills battle of the roads, and enjoyed both public transport and wide open plains.

That’s not to say that either

place is any better or worse overall.

Different places have different strengths, and that very difference can challenge you to examine your own preconceptions and sense of belonging.

Home is about people, about attitude, about connections and finding a place.

As I write this from amongst the bustle of an inner city café, I am looking forward to coming back to our place, to my partner, to the dog, to my dismally undersized tomato plants.

Sure, another migration is now on the cards, but for today, I can’t wait to get on that plane to come back home.

As men we are all aware of the fuel gauge in our car, if that one gets too low the car stops, however it is not just our car that has gauges our lives have gauges as well.

Each one of us has a fuel tank in our soul that when it gets depleted, life becomes very hard. When the tank of our soul gets empty burn-out is not far away.

Each one of us has different things that indicate where our fuel level is at. For some they

are just constantly grumpy.

You may have had a prolonged season of long hours at work with no time to rest and you are just grumpy.

For others it may be the littlest thing irritates you, for example normally when you arrive home you help put the kids’ toys away but lately you arrive home and just kick those toys into touch. You need to recognise what your reactions, what your gauges are showing you about the state of your tank.

That is only the first part because then you need to work out what is it that fills your tank, what is it that provides rest for your soul. How can you fill your tank so that you can return to normal, so that you

Is your tank getting low? e hosted a men’s event in the weekend just gone. A gathering on Friday night where a couple of guys shared some relevant things for us men. Another talk on Saturday morning before the rest of Saturday was occupied playing with big boys’ toys, diggers, a bulldozer, rifles, 4wd etc.

We had an amazing time with around 80 men from throughout the middle of the South Island.

In this article I want to share some of the insight that was shared in a talk on the Friday night.

For the men last Saturday many tanks were filled through hanging out with other men, driving machines and shooting rifles. Whatever it is for you, make sure you schedule it into your life, take time to fill your tanks and also make sure you help your significant other discover what fills their tanks, and then help them to make time for it.

Your family deserves the best of you and so make it a priority to keep your tanks full, to keep your soul refreshed.

■ Preheat oven to 200°C. ■ Scrub potatoes, do not peel. Cut into wedges.

■ Place potatoes, paprika, mustard powder, flour, salt and pepper in a plastic bag. Shake well to evenly coat potatoes.

■ Heat oil in baking dish for 2-3 minutes before adding wedges.

■ Bake in preheated oven, uncovered for 20-30 minutes or until wedges are golden brown and crunchy.

Sport Greens busy More than 60 people made the most of yesterday’s sunshine by taking part in the Waireka Croquet Club’s annual Christchurch Show Day tournament, including Iris Taylor (left) and Gay Gillespie.

Dubbed the blind tournament because part of the entry fee is donated to the New Zealand Blind Foundation, the tournament attracted players from around Mid and South Canterbury, the youngest two being just 14.

Both golf and association croquet were played and association was won by 14-yearold Logan McCorkindale from Waireka, with Allenton’s Barbara Field runner-up.

For the juniors Jean Gubb won, with Patricia Shears runner-up.

Block one of the golf croquet was won by Waireka’s Dulcie Pierre while on block two Pauline McKechnie and John Cooper were joint winners.

Kiwis plan Pakistan comeback By andrew aLderson Having been trounced by Pakistan, in what New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum referred to as their “perfect test”, the visitors now face a conundrum on what to change if they’re to be anything more than a soft kill in the second test at Dubai.

New Zealand has two days to concoct better plans to attack Pakistan’s batsmen and find an antidote to nullify their spin and reverse swing.

The Australian test late last month at the same venue saw 22 of the 32 wickets fall to spin, so that becomes top priority.

Do they sweep or use their feet? The former seemed to work better than the latter at Abu Dhabi, albeit the crossbatted option can look awkward and risky. However, the fact even Kane Williamson suffered his first stumping in a test suggests dancing down the wicket can be flawed.

Williamson misjudged a delivery from Mohammad Hafeez who is one weapon they’re likely to deal with less after he was reported for a suspected illegal action. He is allowed to bowl while testing takes place over the next 21 days, but his role might be minimised now the umpires are on alert.

McCullum summed up his concerns about spin by talking of the pressure assessing turn, bounce, skid and drift in a split second with a horde of hungry fielders around the bat. It can morph into a white-flannelled prison where players make rash decisions trying to escape.

However, as coach Mike Hesson pointed out, they’ve got batting problems elsewhere.

“Spin was a factor [in Abu Dhabi] but we also lost almost half our wickets to seam. When the ball reversed [from Rahat Ali, who took six for 70, and Imran Khan, two for 66] we fell in clumps. Playing the newer ball against the spinners was especially hard but once it got softer it was easier.”

While occupying the crease presented a problem, Hesson said the inability to take wickets arguably presented bigger concerns given Pakistan’s aggregate of 741 for five across both innings. It effectively means that regardless of the runs New Zealand muster, they mightn’t have the personnel capable of levelling the series.

However the bowlers, particularly spinners Ish Sodhi and Mark Craig, were betrayed by several botched chances.

Hesson indicated the incumbents would likely return for the second test rather than alternating Tim Southee or Trent Boult with Neil Wagner or Doug Bracewell.

“It’s easy from a train crash point-of-view to automatically look to batting but overall we were outplayed in all three disciplines. I thought the seamers bowled pretty well, but they never looked like getting a wicket at times. I don’t think necessarily changing people will make a lot of difference.”

McCullum concurred. While expressing overall disappointment, his demeanour was one of calm. “Sometimes you’ve got to admit you were second best, cop it on the chin, reflect on it, but don’t overanalyse.”

He also made a pointed reference to an outside influence which steered the game: “Hopefully I win the toss next game”.

The lure of the Lowry Cup will see 40 of Mid Canterbury’s top male bowlers look to qualify for the final on Sunday.

The premier men’s open singles event sees the best men from around the clubs of Mid Canterbury get whittled down to one over two days.

The large field will be spread over the MSA, Ashburton and

Allenton bowling greens for the qualifying rounds on Sunday as they all look to be the last man standing at the cup final the following Sunday.

Methven’s Jeff Nowell, a Canadian by birth, beat out his club mate Adrian Kemp in last year’s final, with both bowlers back again this summer.

The 2012 winner Darren Turner is one of several former holders of the cup in this year’s

qualifying field, as is Peter Collins, who is chasing a fifth cup win after four wins in the past 11 seasons.

The list of 40 bowlers will be cut down to around 16 for the knockout phase at the Methven Bowling Club seven days later.

The Mid Canterbury women’s equivalent, the Nan Marsh open singles, has been cancelled after a lack of entries.

spected leaders of the teams have gone - Couzins retired after this year’s Commonwealth Games, Whitelock is taking time out from the game to start a family but is eyeing a possible return in time for the Rio Olympics in 2016.

coach Mark Hager has talked of a shared responsibility plan, featuring players like Anita Punt, Sam Charlton and Stacey Michelsen for their upcoming assignments, starting against Australia in Wellington today.

A similar situation is likely to apply with the men.

In the case of Child, New Zealand’s best player and among the finest attackers in the game, there’s no guarantees long term.

The likelihood is that coach Colin Batch will give other influential figures, such as Nick Haig and Arun Panchia, their chance in the months ahead.

However Child, 26, and with 212 international appearances, is relishing the prospect. In a sense it is a logical next step for someone who made his debut nine years ago. “I think I’ve had enough experience to get a really clear understanding of what’s happening in the game,” he said.

Reps to host South Canty

The only senior cricket in Mid Canterbury this weekend will see the senior representative side host South Canterbury.

The scheduled third round of senior cricket’s Pritchard Shield has been postponed after it was agreed to have the long weekend off.

Senior cricket has been played over the long weekend in recent seasons but the decision was made mid-week to have today off, with most sides struggling for numbers.

Some cricketers will still have

to don the whites when the senior representative side takes on South Canterbury in a 50-over match for the Ron Biggar Memorial at the Ashburton Domain on Sunday.

Mid Canterbury won the trophy for the first time since 2006 with a five-wicket win in Timaru last year.

Mid Canterbury are without Matt Winter, Tom Meyrick, Sean Stagg and Will Southby, who all play club cricket in Christchurch and have a Twenty20 tournament, but coach Garfield Charles has had the luxury of naming 12 players -

after he had to step in as number 11 in last week’s win over Marlborough.

Richard Print, Bevan Ravenscroft and Harry Jones, who were responsible for taking South Canterbury down for just 119 last year, will lead the bowling attack, bolstered by Englishman Matt Haworth.

Matt Tait, James Southby, Bo Houston and new recruit James Fitch, an all-rounder from Palmerston North, will make up the top half of the batting order. South Canterbury will be led by the experienced James Laming.

While there is no senior cricket today, the Ashburton College 1st XI have the second day of their match against North West at Burnside in the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Cup competition.

The third grade sides also continue in the combined MidSouth competition, with the College boys’ Year 9/10 team playing Roncalli at the Ashburton Domain while MethvenLauriston are away to the South Canterbury Girls.

The two Mid Canterbury third grade sides are unbeaten so far.

Breakers almost undone by Hawks

By Kris Shannon If the mark of a championship side is to grind out unflattering victories, the Breakers must certainly be considered title contenders.

The Kiwi club played some of the worst basketball they have managed this season but still emerged on top 71-55 against the ANBL cellar-dwelling Hawks.

Welcoming to Vector Arena a Wollongong side that had suffered eight straight defeats, the Breakers did their utmost to throw away what for the first half appeared a certain win.

A horror third quarter caused almost irreparable damage before the Breakers bounced back to sneak over the line. If the opposition were anyone other than the last-placed Hawks, the home side might have been less lucky.

But in advancing their record to 7-3, the Breakers remained at the right end of the ladder, taking the win before mercifully banishing this one to memory.

No one within the club will want to look back on the third.

The Breakers took a 10-point lead into halftime but emerged after the break and promptly missed 12 straight shots, eventually finishing with just three points in quarter that would have been kind to call ugly.

They got their act together for the fourth as Wollongong showed why they equalled a club record with nine consecutive losses, with Cedric Jackson quickly ending the game as a contest.

The point guard scored 13 points in the final period to finish with a game-high 24, chipping in seven rebounds and four assists.

Ekene Ibekwe was the only other Breaker in double figures and, for a club that often puts five or six

players past that mark, that fact illustrated just how ineffective the offence was for much of the game.

Like they did last weekend, the import pair both made major contributions as the Breakers began well. Ibekwe took little more than a minute to announce his arrival on the floor, throwing down Rhys Carter’s alley-oop to help his side seize control in the opening quarter.

Wollongong remained within a possession but the Breakers soon found a significant lead in the second when Ibekwe added the foul after an agile burst through the paint, creating a game-high eightpoint advantage.

Jackson, meanwhile, led his team with 10 as the Breakers led by the same amount at the major break, making a number of eye-catching lay-ups and having his way when driving to the hoop.

The Breakers would have felt unfortunate to let the Hawks hang in the game, considering Wollongong managed just 53 points in last weekend’s loss to Sydney. And the Hawks pulled even closer to start the third, enjoying an 8-0 run as the Breakers took more than six minutes to make a field goal.

That streak of futility was finally broken by Ibekwe but not even his best efforts could revive his rapidly-wilting side, shooting an air ball as Wollongong drew level late in the period.

In addition to their horrendous shooting, the Breakers were turning over the ball and being outrebounded, needing to quickly arrest the worrying slide as the sides heading to the fourth on even terms.

Jackson did his utmost to accomplish that, making a pair of triples to give his side the lead they wouldn’t squander.

BDO cancelled The Big Day at the Office has been cancelled. The multisport race around the foothills of Methven won’t take place next weekend as planned after the decision was reached to cancel the 2014 event due to a low number of registrations. A number of multisporters use the race, which features off-road running, cycling and kayaking, as a starting point to gauge where they are at, three months out from the Coast to Coast. The race had 115 competitors last year and was won by two-time Coast to Coast champion Braden Currie’s NZ Adventure team-mate and fellow Wanaka resident, Dougal Allan, with Currie’s older brother Glen second. Organisers hope the race will return in 2015.

Cooper to race Anton Cooper has confirmed he will ride at the Longbeach Coastal Challenge this year. The Commonwealth Games gold medallist will be the headline rider at the eighth year of the race along Mid Canterbury’s picturesque coastline on the historic Longbeach Estate.

Cooper has regularly competed in the event and the organisers are excited to have the Commonwealth and junior world champion sharing the course with the hundreds of other bikers - and a few runners. As well as the usual 35km, 21km and 12km mountain bike rides there is the 21km and 12km off road runs and a 12km walk which saw the competitors’ list swell over 1000 last year. The annual race is on November 30 with entries still open.

Fordyce shines Methven teenager, Edmund Fordyce, continues to shine on the croquet greens. Playing out of Ashburton’s Waireka Croquet Club, Fordyce won the intermediate grade of the recent South Island Golf Croquet Grades Championships at the Aorangi Croquet Club. Fordyce came out on top of Aorangi’s Oscar Baird-Gosling to win the grade.

The 14-year-old will have a chance for higher honours in the New Year, after he received a wild card entry to represent New Zealand at the World Under 21 Golf Croquet Championships in Christchurch in February. Last season Fordyce won the Baker Family Plate at the New Zealand Croquet Council AGM as the most improved Association Croquet player in New Zealand.

Hunt’s time to shine

Ekene Ibekwe was a major contributor, with double figures shooting.

Mark Hunt readily tells people that he believes he is the best fighter on the planet and the time has come to prove it. The Kiwi has never done anything in the conventional manner during his lengthy combat sport career and the build-up to his interim UFC heavyweight title bout with Fabricio Werdum at UFC 180 in Mexico City tomorrow is no exception. After champion Cain Velasquez was unable to defend his title against the No 1 contender Werdum, Hunt was offered the chance to fight for the interim belt with only three weeks notice.

Slade pushes for utility spot

BY GREGOR PAUL Having not played on the wing since 2009, Colin Slade will inevitably be nervous at Murrayfield. But there will be others in the squad, the likes of Beauden Barrett, Israel Dagg and Charles Piutau, who will be more nervous.

And they will be more nervous because Slade has a chance to push himself into the World Cup frame. As in really push himself because his utility value, especially as it comes with superb goal-kicking, is going to be hard to leave at home next year when the All Blacks take 31 players to the World Cup. Most nervous should be Dagg.

His case for inclusion in a World Cup squad is not compelling. In his favour is that booming right boot; his bravery and accuracy under the high ball and his experience.

But, to some extent, the latter two are not much more than table stakes. Aerial skills are a prerequsite for all players chosen in the back three and even Julian Savea, once nervous and inconsistent as a kick receiver, is rock solid these days.

The All Blacks have oodles of outside backs who are competent in the core skills. The selection bar is therefore set higher in the back three: it’s about the extras ... about finding players who can deliver beyond the expected.

They have two of those in Ben Smith and Julian Savea. These two bring the All Black attacking game to life.

Cory Jane is another, who while lacking the size and power of others, continues to be one of the best finishers in the business.

He only needs about six inches of space to work miracles and All Black coach Steve Hansen dropped a big hint in Chicago that Jane, despite having been

forced home with injury, remains firmly in their World Cup plans.

So what about Dagg? A virtual permanent fixture at fullback since 2011 and yet not too much attacking genius in that period.

Flashes and reminders yes, consistently good games as a counter attacking influence and strike runner ... no. The confident young man who dazzled in his early tests and stormed his way into the No 15 jersey, hasn’t been seen for an age.

Then there was England’s opening try last week: Dagg ushered Johnny May into the right place but the tackle never came and while it wouldn’t be fair to say Dagg is a defensive liability, he’s not the best oneon-one.

It was an incident that added another pixel to a picture that is forming: that Dagg is a good player rather than a great player.

It added just a fraction more to this feeling that Dagg isn’t doing quite enough, or at least there are a number of others who are doing more.

The biggest concern of all, however, is that in the really big games, the ones when the All Blacks have been put under the most pressure, Dagg has been poor.

He was subbed against England in 2012; Ireland in 2013 and England again this year in the opening test when he had a night to forget.

He’s under pressure and how much, could become clear this week in Cardiff. The expectation is that the All Blacks will pick their form team for Wales - reward those who have delivered.

If Savea and Piutau are on the wings and Smith at fullback, it wouldn’t be a surprise.

That wouldn’t be terminal for Dagg’s World Cup ambitions, but would let him know that with just six tests after Edin-

burgh left until the World Cup, competition for places is fierce and Slade may be the wild card.

“Colin can play on the wing, he can play fullback and fiveeighths so it gives us ability to have someone fit in pretty seamlessly and do the job we want and if we go to the World Cup, we need to be able to have players like that,” says All Black coach Steve Hansen.

“There are only 31 spots so you have got to have someone with reasonable utility value and he offers that. It’s a bonus he can goal-kick and he’s kicking well it is an advantage to him.

“Can he genuinely start a test match on the wing? If he can do that, we know he can at fullback and we know he’s pretty good at first-five and we know he’s a pretty good goal-kicker, we know at a pinch he could come

on at halfback and that gives a genuine challenge to someone like Beauden Barrett who is a utility player as well for the World Cup.” Barrett may have been name checked but he’s probably a red herring. He offers too much - is so good off the bench, that it’s just not feasible to imagine the All Blacks leaving Barrett behind next year.

Not with Dan Carter’s injury history and not given what happened at No 10 in 2011 when the All Blacks saw their top three ruled out of the tournament.

“There are four five-eighths and we can only take two, maybe three at a pinch so they are all in a tussle,” says Hansen. - NZME

Injury hampering Cruden’s goalkicking An injury problem has been hampering Aaron Cruden’s goalkicking, according to coach Steve Hansen, who admits to being concerned at the poor recent success rates of his kickers.

In his past two tests, Cruden has kicked six goals from 14 attempts, a success rate of less than 50 per cent. He kicked two from five against England

at Twickenham before Beauden Barrett came on at first-five and kicked one from three - his two misses coming from relatively close range.

Despite a lack of intensive practice due to his leg injuries, Dan Carter, returning to the No10 jersey for the first time in almost exactly 12 months, was successful with all three of

his kicks during his 30 minutes against the USA in Chicago, including one from the left touchline.

Asked about how concerned he was with the kicking percentage of the other two, Hansen said: “During the test match it’s pretty high because you want them to go over. In the case of Crudes, he’s had a couple of bad

days. But Mick [Byrne] and the physio [Pete Gallagher] have worked out the problem, so they tell me. He kicked really well the other day after getting some physio from Pete and freeing up the [hip] joint. He seems to have established that that is the thing that has held him back so if they can stay on top of that he’ll be fine.”

France ready France doesn’t needing motivating against Australia at Stade de France. The statistics are enough: A 3-0 whitewash in their test series in June, and eight losses in the past nine matches against the Wallabies. Both sides are in a transitional period ahead of next year’s World Cup, with France coach Philippe Saint-Andre sprinkling his ageing and malfunctioning side with fresh new faces, and Australia finding its feet under new coach Michael Cheika.

Les Tricolores finished last in the Six Nations in 2013, and an unconvincing fourth this year, before heading down to Australia to get thumped 50-23 and 39-13, and also blanked 6-0.

BY PATRICK MCKENDRY At 2.06m, it’s not often that Dominic Bird encounters someone as tall as him on the field but that will be the case at Murrayfield tomorrow when he comes up against Richie Gray, one half of a giant family double act in the boiler room of Scotland’s forward pack.

The experienced Gray, 25, so easy to spot on a rugby field due not only to his height but also his wild blond hair, is the same height as Bird, who will be playing only his second test.

At 126kg to Bird’s 112kg, he is slightly heavier.

Gray’s 20-year-old brother, Jonny, stands 1.98m tall and weighs 121kg. One can only imagine the food bill at the family home as these two were growing up near Glasgow.

Remarkably, the pair had never played rugby together until last weekend, when they marked the occasion by both scoring tries in Scotland’s impressive 41-31 victory over Argentina at Murrayfield.

The Gray brothers present a formidable challenge for the All Blacks’ lineout, into which debutant hooker James Parsons will be throwing for the first time.

Jeremy Thrush is another key component, and at 1.98m, the All Black lock is the same height as Jonny Gray.

As a point of reference, those as tall as Thrush and Jonny Gray (1.98m) have to duck their heads as they walk through a standard door space.

The All Blacks will have variations in mind, though. Veteran hooker Keven Mealamu said during the week that finding space in the set piece was the key, a theme continued by Victor Vito, who will call the lineout for

The Grays, meanwhile, will look to put Scotland on the front foot in order to continue their good run under new coach Vern Cotter, a New Zealander who spent one year coaching the Crusaders alongside Robbie Deans.

And the dynamic between the brothers might not be as you would expect.

“Jonny is the boss,” Gray the elder told the media before the Argentina test. “He tells me where to go. I just shut up and listen.”

Asked who got the better of the backyard tussles, he said:

“When you are 12 years old and your brother is seven it was a bit easier but as he got a big bigger it started to get a bit harder,” said Richie. “It was a tough one to call.”

Bird, incidentally, is the tallest ever All Black, eclipsing the 2.05m Mark Cooksley.

Richie Gray, however, is not the tallest to play for Scotland.

That honour belongs to Richard Metcalfe, who surely must be one of the tallest ever to have played international rugby. Metcalfe, who played nine tests for Scotland in 2000-2001, stands 2.13m, which is 7 foot even in the old measurement.

Hammers earn starting spots

Mid Canterbury’s Andrew Smith has been named on the bench for the New Zealand rugby Heartland XV just days after being sent from the field in the Cook Islands.

The side will play its second match against the Cook Islands Residents XV in Rarotonga today, following a 64-6 win against them earlier this week, during which lock Smith received a first-half red card for making contact with a player’s head with his boot.

He was expected to be on water duties for game two in the Cooks, but has instead dropped to the bench.

There will still be a strong Mid

Canterbury presence on the field at the opening whistle though, with Gary Redmond earning his second start in a row and Jon Dampney back in the starting line up after being water-boy in the last match. The dynamic duo are set to start at seven and eight, and Brenton Connell – who came off the bench in the first Rarotonga game - will start on the right wing.

Another Mid Canterbury player, Jake Ashby is under an injury cloud and has been bracketed at halfback with Buller’s Andrew Stephens. A decision on Ashby’s availability will be made this morning.

Wednesday’s opening match of

the short Pacific tour was a slippery one following Rarotonga’s first tropical downpour in three months, just before the game, but it didn’t hamper the New Zealand side’s scoring ability.

A big Cook Islands side opened the scoring and led 6-3 after early penalties, but the Heartland side then scored four quick tries and the visitors led 36-6 at half time.

Mid Canterbury did get on the scoresheet late in the match, with Ashby coming off the bench and scoring a try on full time.

The Heartland side coached by Kurt McQuilkin will kick off its third and final match in Nikao, Rarotonga, at 3.30pm today at BCI National Stadium.

Stuart Lancaster has been hailed as the saviour of English rugby after raising standards on and off the pitch since taking over as coach following the national team’s embarrassing 2011 World Cup campaign. Still, like any coach, he will be judged by results — especially with a home World Cup looming — and in that regard he is starting to be on uncomfortable ground.

After four straight defeats, all to New Zealand, England needs a victory against South Africa this weekend to lift morale and ensure the southern hemisphere giants don’t arrive at next year’s World Cup with a psychological hold.

Bid cost $45m FIFA should refund the $45 million Australia spent on a farcical bidding process to host soccer’s 2022 World Cup, a federal politician says.

Independent Senator Nick Xenophon says Australia was ripped off by the sport’s world governing body. A FIFA ethics committee report into the bid process found evidence of some improper conduct by eight of the nine bids for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, while giving Russia and Qatar the go-ahead to remain as hosts of those tournaments.

The report found Australia broke bid and ethics rules, tried to buy votes of decisionmakers and then cover-up its attempts - and that Football Federation Australia was aware of the conduct. - AAP

Rooney’s 100th cap Wayne Rooney will make his 100th England appearance when Roy Hodgson’s side attempt to extend their 100 per cent record in Euro 2016 qualifying at home to Slovenia. The Manchester United striker, 29, will lead the team out at Wembley Stadium accompanied by his two young sons, Kai and Klay, as he becomes the ninth England player to take his number of caps into three figures.

Kiwis wary of wounded Kangaroos Kiwis coach Stephen Kearney says his side is prepared to meet a resurgent Kangaroos outfit in the Four Nations final in Wellington tonight.

The Kiwis insist they are under no illusions about how tough it will be to beat the Australians despite drawing plenty of confidence from beating them in their opening tournament match in Brisbane three weeks ago.

Sitting together with Kiwis skipper Simon Mannering alongside their Australian counterparts, coach Tim Sheens and captain Cameron Smith, at Friday’s joint Kiwis and Kangaroos press conference at Westpac Stadium, Kearney warned that the Kangaroos have improved dramatically over their last two round robin games.

“We’ve watched the Australians in terms of their improvement over the last couple of weeks. [They produced] A real tough performance against England and also a wonderful match against Samoa, so we know what we are in for,” Kearney said.

In attempting to downplay the significance of the Kiwis initial Suncorp Stadium success, Kearney offered some reasons why the Australians were not at their best that night.

“We understand the circumstances that we’re facing. The Australian side in the first match, they had two players who didn’t go back on in the second-half (Daly Cherry-Evans and Greg Inglis) and the conditions were pretty taxing over in Brisbane.

“It can be of assistance, there’s no doubt about that. Essentially it will come down to the 17 guys that take the field for us making sure that they get their jobs done really well and execute what we’ve been working on at training all week.

“That’s the focus for us and hopefully playing in front of our home crowd will help that but we need to make sure that we get those jobs done first.”

Kearney acknowledged his side’s form had fluctuated throughout the tournament but believes the Kiwis had taken comfort from grinding out two close wins over Samoa and England without having hit their straps.

“Our performance against Samoa wasn’t so good. I thought we were a little bit off attitudewise, coming off a pretty good performance the week before.

“Last week’s effort against England was a real positive one, [they] threw everything at us and we were fortunate enough to come away with a victory.

“What it does, it builds confi-

dence within the group but we know that we have to put our best performance together tomorrow night to ensure that we come off the field victorious.”

Abbreviated netball game a big winner T

he netball fraternity must be very happy that they’ve hit upon a winning formula, following almost every other big sport and introducing an abbreviated version of their game, quicker, less players, more razzmatazz.

Great for television, the crowds go wild (sorry), and the players love it, all of them getting right into the spirit of the thing and having a great deal of infectious fun, while there’s no loss of intensity when the whistle blows and the action starts. It helps that we appear to be really good at it too.

So, with the foresight shown by bureaucrats everywhere, this big winner, producing massive momentum for netball, is put on the shelf for next year.

That’s surely the message for the Black Caps as they look toward the World Cup, but before that comes around there’s a test series to try and salvage something from.

Just as the Australians found before them, Pakistan have found a new home in the United

And after getting thumped in the first test, our guys will somehow have to find a miracle cure for the rest of this tour.

Folks will argue that it will be an entirely different team for the upcoming global one-day extravaganza - but it won’t.

The backbone of our team will always be McCullum, Taylor, Williamson, Anderson, Neesham, Southee and Boult, with just a bit of jiggling around at the top and bottom ends, with an Aussie and a reformed (?) bad boy to open, so it is these guys who will be filling

the ‘dark horse’ role that all the informed commentators seem to be bestowing on our representatives.

Speaking of commentators, I caught an excellent interview Steve Davis conducted with Paddy O’Brien, the likeable southern rugby referee who rose through the ranks to be the chief of the bosses of the whole reffing system.

Among a heap of interesting observations were his favourite players on the field; Richie McCaw (“the best player ever to lace up boots”) and John Eales, while at the other end of the scale were perhaps unsurprisingly a couple of halfbacks, yappy, annoying people that they generally are, Justin Marshall and George Gregan.

He also had a word about those commentators, citing Nisbo and TJ and who get the right message about what’s happening on the field across, but reserving special mention for Murray Mexted, who despite an obvious passion for the game, was, as this writer always asserted, the worst of the worst.

He always tried to be the class clown with his low-brow jokes, and he was hugely successful at mangling the English language at every opportunity, and now there’s expert confirmation that he didn’t actually know what he was talking about.

“I think he just made it up as he went along”, said the best ref in the world.

Jaccka Justy surprises

BY MATT MARKHAM Jonny Cox went to Addington yesterday with high hopes of victory with one of his two horses and was more hopeful than anything else with the other.

But the fickleness of harness racing struck and almost as quickly as New Years Jay blew her chances in the Show Day Futurity, Jaccka Justy blew away his opposition in the Group One Dominion Handicap.

In a great moment for the sport, Cox, who trains in partnership with Amber Hoffman at Westwood Beach in Dunedin, produced a cool, calm and collected drive on the big trotter to send punters reeling when he blasted past a great field of open class trotters on his way to claiming the major prize of yesterday’s meeting.

The signs had been all there too, but even Cox, like almost everyone else on course at Addington, was shocked.

“We got a really nice run into it and I thought we might have been a chance,’’ he said. “But to go straight past a horse like Stent in the way he did really surprised me.

“I’ve always known it was there, but it’s been a wee while coming.’’

The victory gave Cox and Hoffman their first Group One success as a training combination and while Hoffman wasn’t in attendance yesterday due to having to look after the team back home, Cox was quick to heap praise on her.

“It’s really unfortunate Amber can’t be here.

“But I’m picking she will be enjoying the moment back home and she deserves to as well because she’s a massive part of this all.’’

Jaccka Justy was a surprise easy winner of the Dominion Handicap.

At the end of the day it wasn’t the one they were after, but the Christen Me camp were more than happy to settle for the more minor pacing prize of Cup Week 2014.

The speedy son of Christian Cullen picked up another Group One to add to the trophy pile when he emphatically won the New Zealand Free-For-All yesterday.

After galloping away and staging a massive recovery to finish fifth in Tuesday’s New Zealand Trotting Cup, Christen Me looked very well suited to the Free-For-All from a good barrier draw and it proved correct as Dexter Dunn worked the Cran Dalgety trained pacer forward to find the lead after 800 metres.

“I don’t give Dex instructions,’’ Dalgety said.

“But I did say to him today to go out and drive him how he wants but to make sure he takes luck out of the equation.’’

Dunn buzzed out of the gate early but was beaten for speed by those drawn inside him so he balanced Christen Me up before

Owned by prominent breeders, Charlie and Ailsa Smaill, Jaccka Justy has always looked capable of winning a major race, but luck has often deserted him on the big occasions.

He was spotted on Tuesday storming home late in proceedings in the New Zealand Trotting Free-For-All and it pointed towards a good performance yesterday.

“It was always going to be a case of whether or not he backed up from Tuesday’s run and was able to see out the two miles.

“With the run we got into it though he was always travelling awesome and just jogged into it when I asked him to run.’’

Cox allowed himself a rare whip flourish before the post – underlining just how important the victory was to him, Hoffman and the Smaills.

“You dream of winning races like this.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling and I can’t really remember a lot about the race, it’s all still sinking in.’’

Cox said Jaccka Justy was likely to be aimed at a race at either Geraldine or Methven in the comings weeks.

Sheemon ran his usual honest race to wind up in second while Kincaslough boomed home from a near impossible position to finish in third.

Dalgety feels that should they secure an invite they will head across with a better horse than the one who was such a gallant runner-up last season.

“A year competing in those Grand Circuit races has made him a lot tougher than what he was.

“So you would think that he will head over there a better horse.’’

A sprinter with strong New Zealand connections is now ranked the equal highestrated short course performer in the world. Terravista has joined Lankan Rupee on top at 123 in the latest rankings issued by the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities that includes racing up to November 9.

Fonterra not involved in Tb scare in China Fonterra said it has no connections with a company that is at the centre of a tuberculosis scare in China.

Bill Foley buys into ice hockey in US American billionaire and New Zealand vineyard owner Bill Foley has being reported as joining another investor to buy into ice hockey in the United States.

The New York Post and other American media have reported on the $US400 million ($NZ508m) sports deal.

“The National Hockey League has chosen the team of William

Foley and the Maloof family as the owners of a Las Vegas expansion team,” it reported.

The Maloof family are influential in Las Vegas and known for producing movies and running the Palms Casino Resort.

Here, Foley owns the majority of NZX listed Foley Family Wines which has just under 400ha of vineyard land in the

Wairarapa and Marlborough.

Its exports rose by 34,000 cases to 274,000 for the June 2014 year and most of that growth came from the US, the business said. New Zealand sales were flat at 102,000 cases.

Foley is chairman of the business, run by Mark Turnbull as chief executive.

Parents protest missing 43 The anguished parents of 43 missing students have begun a protest tour of Mexico, rejecting claims their sons were slaughtered in a crime that has rattled the nation.

Hundreds of people marched in support as a convoy of buses left with families and dozens of fellow students in Ayotzinapa, home of the young men’s leftwing teacher-training college in the southern state of Guerrero.

The parents, who deeply distrust the government, want to tell fellow Mexicans that they do not believe their sons are dead and that the authorities should find them alive.

Violent protests have erupted since authorities announced last week that Guerreros Unidos drug gang henchmen confessed to murdering the students and incinerating their bodies after receiving them from corrupt police in September.

The government has stopped short of declaring them dead, saying it would wait for DNA test results on remains that were sent to forensic specialists at Austria’s University of Innsbruck late Wednesday.

“They have disappeared but they are not dead. We want help finding them,” said Blanca Navas, mother of missing student Jorge.

A contraceptive shot will soon be available at a dollar a dose in 69 of the world’s poorest countries, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Pfizer pharmaceuticals have announced. The move expands a pilot programme already begun in a handful of African countries to offer Sayana Press, a singledose contraceptive which lasts for about three months. It is based on the Depo-Provera injection but packaged differently, into a plastic bubble with a short needle attached, making it easy to administer beneath the skin.

“The reality is that today, over 200 million women around the world want to prevent or time their pregnancies but lack the means to do that,” said Chris Elias, a doctor with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Florida man executed for killing family A Florida man who fatally shot his sleeping wife and then raped and killed his young stepdaughter 22 years ago was put to death yesterday for the child's slaying.

Chadwick Banks, 43, was pronounced dead after a lethal injection at Florida State Prison, the office of Governor Rick Scott said.

Banks was condemned for the 1992 killing of 10-yearold Melody Cooper. Banks also received a life sentence for the murder of his wife, Cassandra Banks, in the attack in Florida.

Banks wore the white skullcap of the Muslim Brotherhood before the lethal drugs were administered, looking directly at the family of the victims when he delivered his final statement.

"I'm very sorry for the hurt and pain I have caused you all of these years," Banks said.

"Year after year I have tried to come up with a reasonable answer for my actions. But how could such acts be reasonable?"

Florida uses a three-drug mixture to execute prisoners: midazolam hydrochloride, vecuronium bromide and potassium chloride.

The drugs are administered intravenously and are intended to first induce unconsciousness, then paralysis and finally cardiac arrest.

Midazolam, a sedative used commonly in surgeries, has been part of the three-drug mixture since 2013. Sodium thiopental was used before that, but its US manufacturer stopped making it and Europe banned its manufacturers from exporting it for executions.

Janina Kolkiewicz woke up inside a body bag in a cold chamber at the morgue in eastern Poland last week. “I was sure she was dead,” doctor Wieslawa Czyz said. “I’m stunned, I don’t understand what happened. Her heart had stopped beating, she was no longer breathing,” she said. “My aunt has no inkling of what happened since she has late-stage dementia,” Bogumila Kolkiewicz, the woman’s niece, told a local newspaper.

“Once we got her home, she said she was freezing and asked for a hot cup of tea.”

UK leader calls for extremism to be rooted out British Prime Minister David Cameron used a rare address to the Australian Parliament yesterday to call for extremist preachers to be banned and for extremism to be rooted out of schools, universities and prisons.

Britain and Australia have both sent their militaries to fight in a US-led coalition against Islamic State extremists in northern Iraq. They have also both had radicalised citizens leave to join terrorists fighting in Iraq and Syria.

Cameron told the Parliament the root cause of extremism was not poverty, social isolation from the mainstream or foreign policy.

“The root cause of the challenge we face is the extremist narrative. So we must confront this extremism in all its forms,” Cameron said.

“We must ban extremist preachers from our country. We must root out extremism from our schools, universities and prisons,” he said.

Removing extremist material from the Internet posed a pressing challenge, he said. The British government was pushing Internet providers to strengthen filters, improve reporting mechanisms and become more proactive in taking down such material.

Australia recently passed counterterrorism laws that give law enforcement authorities more power to prevent Australians from joining the extremist fighters and to prosecute those who return.

Ebola doctor seeks aid Boko Haram invades A doctor from Sierra Leone with US residency infected with ebola could travel to the United States to be treated for the deadly virus, CNN and medical officials say.

The man was in Sierra Leone when he became sick, said a spokesperson from the Nebraska Medical Centre in Omaha, where the patient may be treated.

“This patient contracted the disease in Sierra Leone and recently tested positive for ebola,” the hospital said in a statement.

Officials said he “will soon be evaluated for possible treatment of the disease here”.

The man is currently in Sierra Leone, and a jet will fly to the West African nation to transport the man to the United States if he is well enough to travel.

“The members of the crew will determine whether the patient is stable enough for transport - if he is, he would arrive in Omaha sometime Saturday afternoon,” the hospital said.

CNN said the man was a surgeon, but it was not clear how he may have contracted the disease. The news network said he is married to a US citizen and has several children.

Scores of Boko Haram fighters have invaded two towns in north-east Nigeria’s Adamawa state after hunters and civilian vigilantes reportedly ousted them from a key town, residents told AFP. The Islamists raided Hong and Gombi, some 100km from the state capital, Yola, after they were pushed out of the commercial hub of Mubi, which they seized two weeks ago.

Boko Haram is thought to have captured more than two dozen towns in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states in recent months, as part of its quest to establish a hardline caliphate in the region.

But despite apparently losing control of Mubi, which the Islamists renamed Madinatul Is-

lam or “City of Islam” in Arabic the invasion of Hong and Gombi saw them move closer to Yola.

Thousands of residents have been taking refuge in the city from the violence.

The vigilantes had reportedly reclaimed the town of Maiha after a fierce battle in which scores of the insurgents were said to have been killed, although there was no official confirmation.

In Gombi, resident Haruna Awwalu said Boko Haram were patrolling the streets, firing heavy weaponry, while another local, Rabi Tanimu, said people were cowering indoors and many had fled into the bush.

They are inconvenient at the best of times, and even worse when you’re on holiday. A holiday drive can quickly become a journey to forget if you run into mechanical problems with your vehicle.

There are a lot of checks you can do leading up to your road trip, including getting a thorough service at least two weeks before your holiday.

The reason to service your car weeks before you leave is in case there is something that requires attention. New parts can often take a week to arrive, so to be on the safe side, it’s best to make sure your vehicle is mechanically sound long before you reverse out of your driveway.

Servicing checklist

Engine lube – If you use your car for regular short trips around town, sludge can form in the sump and condensation can give an incorrect oil reading. Treat your engine to a fresh oil change.

Lubricants – If it’s been more than six months since your last service, ensure automatic transmission fluid, gearbox and differential oils are all topped up, and links and suspension parts are well greased.

Coolant – Check your radiator fluid levels and consider new antifreeze. Old coolant, a malfunctioning thermostat or blocked radiator can cause serious damage on a long trip.

Exhaust system – a loose or corroded exhaust can cause a serious malfunction, so it pays to get it checked by your mechanic.
