THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY
School sets up ‘drop-in centre’ BY MYLES HUME
MYLES.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Children arriving at school as early as 7.30am during the bitter winter months has prompted an Ashburton school to establish a “drop-in centre”. Ashburton Intermediate began the initiative this term, offering pupils a roof over their heads and breakfast if it is needed, from 7.45am. Most Mid Canterbury schools don’t allow pupils on school grounds until 8.30am, but principal Gavin Cooper said that was not always viable. The reality is some children are there from 7.30am and it was important the school provided a warm, dry place for early pupils, who previously waited in entrance ways or walked the school grounds before class, Mr Cooper said. “Some of our kids, especially those whose parents work in the freezing works, tend to be going early because mum and dad have got to work. It’s not many, just some. “The fact of life is not everyone comes from the same page, and
there are some children out there who come from homes where there should be enough for them but there isn’t always, but if you can get them a good shot at starting the day warm and with a full tummy then they’re more likely to be successful in my opinion.” Mr Cooper said the “drop-in centre” would be partially funded by the Lye Trust which would see it supervised by a teacher aide, with children having access to computers, Weetbix, toast and Milo. Pupils had responded well, and he suspected “it would become busier”. Other schools the Guardian spoke to said they did not allow pupils on the grounds until the 8.30am bell, as the morning was a vital time for teachers to prepare. Hit Play Oscar Programme coordinator La Tisha Richards takes up to 10 children a morning into her home for before school care. “And if we could find a place to expand it we would, because the reality is there is a need for it in Ashburton because of the hours some parents work.”
