A local tourism provider has called for an investigation into the impact of crop stubble burn-offs.

The images, from Friday last week, have triggered the ski area’s manager, James McKenzie, to call for an investigation into the impact of crop stubble burn-offs on tourism.

Tourism is the country’s number one

earner, worth $26 billion for the year to January, up from $16b in 2009.

Of the $26b, $3.5b was in Canterbury, and $153 million in the Ashburton District.

McKenzie lives in Methven, and as such regularly witnessed smoke billowing from burn-offs on rural land surrounding the town throughout February and March.

“We’ve had to shut doors and windows because the air quality outside is so poor.”

He said visibility around the town on

Friday was down to less than one kilometre. Clean air and clear views were strong tourism selling points, and tourists flying into Christchurch on the Friday would have been surprised to see the extent of smoke.

“Our valued tourists from China could be mistaken for thinking they have already arrived back in Beijing,” McKenzie said.

Earthquake shocks Mt Hutt residents

He understood there were credible reasons for farmers to undertake burn-offs, but the fact was they impacted beyond farm boundaries.

It was important the impacts were fully understood and New Zealand made informed choices about the practice, he said.

The Guardian received a letter to the editor from an unnamed London tourist this month, saying they left Ashburton in a rush after a burn-off caused smoke pollution.

“Why is this happening? It has certainly ruined our stay in ASHburton,” they wrote.

Experience Mid Canterbury general manager Bruce Moffatt agreed some tourists would not understand the reason behind burn-offs, but believed raised awareness could help.

He had himself been “disappointed” when driving to Methven from Ashburton on Friday, as he noticed as many as 12 burnoffs around him.

He believed the agricultural and tourism industries should come together and share information about the issue, so the tourism industry could “get better messages out there”.

“I believe this is a good time to come together as an agricultural community to educate our international and domestic visitors on the value and importance of the procedure,” Moffatt said.

Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers president Michael Salvesen said an investigation was unnecessary.

“It’s on the radar with authorities anyway,” Salvesen said.

A permit system was being discussed by fire authorities and guidelines in ECan’s air plan were still being finalised.

Burn-offs had been more noticeable this year due to a fire ban during the Port Hills fires having narrowed the season.

Mt Hutt residents close to the epicentre of a moderate earthquake at 9.41pm on Monday night reported feeling a violent jolt.

“It shocked me, it took me by surprise. It makes you feel unsettled for quite a while after,” Stacey Mawle said.

She was at home watching television on her couch with husband Rob, when they felt the jolt, and their four-year-old son Charlie woke up. Five-year-old Poppy slept through it.

Mawle said the 4.0 magnitude quake sounded similar to Mt Hutt Ski Area undertaking avalanche bombing, which generally shook plates in the cupboard.

It had been the biggest she had felt since the Kaikoura quake last year. It had not surprised her when she found out it was centred so close, reportedly within a couple of kilometres, because it was so sharp.

Farmer Jeanette Maxwell also had her evening disrupted by the quake. She described it as one good shudder which swung the lights in her home.

Mt Hutt Ski Area manager James McKenzie said there was no damage on the skifield or access road, despite reportedly being centred within three kilometres of the base area. No-one was on the skifield at the time.

Residents throughout Mid Canterbury felt it, and in Methven there was a jolt accompanied by what was described as a rumble or the sound of doors and windows moving. There were 178 Felt It reports filed with GeoNet, from as far away as the North Island, with the intensity ranging

A RUPTURE IN THE ALPINE FAULT It could happen today, or it could be decades away.

Earthquakes such as the 4.0 magnitude jolt which occurred near Methven on Monday night are a reminder that one day the South Island will be hit by the big one, in the form of a rupture on the Alpine Fault.

The fault ruptures on average once every 291 years, but the longest time between ruptures in the past is about 400 years. The last rupture was in 1717, 300 years ago.

A rupture on the faultline can be up to a magnitude of about 8.0, depending on how much of it ruptures. Like the Kaikoura 7.8 quake it would be felt throughout the country. The West Coast is the area most likely to be hardest hit, while the South Island could sustain widespread structural damage.

People are advised to always be prepared for disaster, whether it be earthquakes, storms or other events, and make sure they have emergency survival items at the ready. GeoNet gave the location of such quakes as a nearest estimate, within about three kilometres, deduced from seismology instruments. The exact location could only be pinpointed when an earthquake broke the surface of the ground, and smaller ones such as this generally did not do this.

Gearing up for colour run

Organisers of the upcoming Ashburton Get Coloured event recently created a mock station to celebrate the arrival of the special powder used in the popular run.

Along with Blue Station sponsors, Skyline Buildings Ashburton, they put the team through their paces, before pelting them with the colours of the rainbow.

Co-ordinator Louise Duke said Skyline decorated the station so Get Coloured by CanInspire could demonstrate what an actual station would look like. “It will be great exposure for any local business,” she said.

“They had heaps of fun getting coloured and getting dressed up for the practice. They can’t wait to see you dressed in white and ready to get coloured.”

The Ashburton event will take place on April 2 at Lake Hood and will be presented by the CanInspire Charitable Trust.

Colour runs are fun events that involve participants being doused with coloured powder as they pass through different stages of the event route.

Man jailed due to lack of treatment beds A man with serious addiction problems and a history of violent offending was jailed for 13 months yesterday because no residential treatment options were able to take him.

Michael James Morris, 41, initially appeared for sentencing on Monday on charges of drink driving, driving while disqualified, careless use of a motor vehicle and assaulting a police officer, in the Ashburton District Court.

Judge Tony Couch delayed mak-

ing a decision until yesterday, to allow Community Probation Services to explore rehabilitative treatment options.

Yesterday he was told seven facilities had been approached but none were prepared to take Morris because of his past history of violent offending.

Probation officer Ross Taylor said the only option left was a custodial sentence of sufficient length to enable Morris to access the prison’s Drug Treatment Unit.

A supervision sentence would be of no value in meeting Morris’ complex needs, he said.

Judge Couch agreed.

“Whilst I can understand service providers must be concerned about the safety and welfare of their staff and clients, it is sad and disturbing that there is nowhere for this man to go. The conclusion I’m driven to make is that the only place the defendant may find some assistance is in a prison environment,” he said.

Defence counsel Roz Burnside immediately indicated her client’s intention to appeal the decision.

Morris’ charges came about after he twice drove into a vehicle in a fast food carpark in Wellington in March last year.

Police were summoned and Morris was found to have been driving with an excess breath alcohol level of 1200 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath, resulting in his ninth drink driving charge.

The court was told Morris had previously served a 10-year prison stint for violent offending, followed by a five-year sentence soon after.

Two court-ordered mental health reports found Morris fit to stand trial but disclosed an extensive history of substance abuse, compounded by diagnosed attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, personality disorders and a head injury incurred in 2015.

Prison sentence likely A 19-year-old man learned he is facing a prison sentence during an appearance in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Michael Ioane Muliaga and his co-offender Ioane Petelo Talivaa, 46, admitted an amended charge of injuring with intent to injure, dating back to charges laid in April last year.

Muliaga will also be sentenced on a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, relating to an assault which occurred less than a month later, when he returns to court on May 15.

The two men had been drinking with others at an Ashburton address in the early hours of April 17. Muliaga, Talivaa and others left the address, stopping to drop the complainant off en route.

Words were exchanged and Talivaa punched the complainant in the head twice, before Muliaga joined the assault, causing the victim to fall awkwardly, twisting his ankle.

The two assailants left in the vehicle, leaving the victim lying on the footpath.

Unable to get to his feet, he called friends for assistance.

Charge dismissed A Rakaia man successfully defended himself against an assault charge in a trial held in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Paul Roger Pollock was charged after he allegedly punched a man through an open car window, following an altercation in Rakaia in September last year.

The complainant claimed he had been visiting his former wife’s home to collect children between 8.30 and 9pm on the night in question and had been asked to leave the property, when Pollock arrived and blocked his vehicle in.

He conceded he had earlier sent the defendant a text message saying he wished to see him. He called police after the alleged injury, consisting of a split lip. Two constables visited the complainant in his Dorie home, where photos were taken of the injury and blood smears on his vehicle.

Pollock was later arrested and charged with assault, but refused to sign a statement taken at the time because he said the officer had refused to include details of an alleged assault on him.

He claimed to have arrived at the address having received the text message. He said the com-

plainant had previously messaged him but he had refrained from replying; this time he had had enough.

According to Pollock’s version, the two men scuffled, pushing and shoving each other before the complainant fell against his own car. He then got inside and locked the doors. At no stage was the window open, he said.

While unable to offer definite explanations, Pollock thought marks on his head could be attributed to a bump incurred when the complainant opened his car door with force. Scrapes on a knuckle were likely to have happened when he banged on the window of the complainants vehicle attempting to get him to get out.

He was adamant he did not punch the complainant.

Judge Tony Couch said there was real doubt about which of the two accounts was accurate, and the objective truth may well lie somewhere in between. However, he found the fact there was more blood on the outside driver’s window of the complainants vehicle to be consistent with the defendants evidence and dismissed the charge.

At the Ashburton Hospital he was found to have a fractured ankle, which required surgery to insert plates and screws to provide support. He also sustained cuts and bruises in the attack, and was off work for weeks.

Judge Tony Couch come close to remanding Muliaga in custody, pending his sentencing.

However defence counsel Douglas Brown persuaded him to allow his client to remain in the community in the interests of restitution and reparation, saying Muliaga would continue to save money toward this end.

He was convicted and Judge Couch delivered a three-strike warning under the system that imposes heavier sentences for further violent offending.

Judge Couch called for the pre-sentence report to include a home detention appendix, however he warned Muliaga it was no guarantee he would not go to prison, given the gravity of the two offences.

Talivaa was remanded on bail and will also appear for sentencing on May 15. The judge requested his pre-sentence report include residential conditions.

Remanded on bail for assault Flaps Israel Ben Stephen Fa’alavaau, 21, of Allenton, admitted charges of assault with intent to injure, fighting in public and common assault during an appearance before Judge Tony Couch in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

He was convicted and remanded on bail for sentencing on April 24.

A pre-sentence report including community detention appendices was requested.

Unlicensed driver fined, disqualified Having failed to get his restricted licence four times, Jordan Teihoka Barry Philp decided it was cheaper to pay the fines he keeps accruing, than to make another attempt.

Philp, 17, was pulled up driving in Methven while his licence was suspended in February.

He refused to cooperate with police and was subsequently arrested and taken to the station, where his mother identified him,

resulting in a further charge of failing to give his name and address to the police officer.

He had no explanation for his behaviour, and was dressed down by Judge Couch after referring to legal paperwork as “this sh*t”.

The judge also pointed out a conviction at the start of Philp’s career was a serious matter.

“It doesn’t matter – I’m in fulltime work,” the teenager said.

“I may as well pay the fines than waste my money on trying to get my restricted (licence).”

Philp has copped five infringements in six months, prompting Judge Couch to point out the folly of his logic.

He was disqualified from driving for six months, beginning in May when his current period of suspension ends, fined $500 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

■ WHANGAREI

Home raid nets stolen property Hundreds of items believed to be stolen from vehicles belonging to international tourists parked at popular Northland sites have been discovered in a Whangarei home after a police raid.

Now police are tackling the mammoth task of contacting backpackers still touring New Zealand and matching them up with their stolen gear.

Piles of backpacks and sports bags filled with clothes, jewellery, a selection of electrical and

expensive camera gear were all part of the property found in a Whangarei house when police carried out a search warrant last Wednesday.

Northland police area response manager Daniel Cleaver said it appeared most the gear belonged to European backpackers and were thefts that had happened recently.

“We are now in the process of identifying what property we have and hopefully most of

them are still travelling in New Zealand,” Cleaver said.

During a two week period police had 12 reports of thefts from cars.

“We are really disappointed visitors to our district are targeted in this way.”

Terori Irihe, 23, from Otangarei, appeared in Whangarei District Court last Thursday.

Further arrests were likely police said.

Ban on unvaccinated?

A ban on unvaccinated children from child-care centres should be investigated, Labour leader Andrew Little says. In Australia the Federal Government wants state and territory authorities to ban unvaccinated children from early childhood centres. Asked about that position on TVNZ’s Breakfast, Little said it was “well worth looking at here”. “Those who don’t, those who choose not to, put others at risk and that’s not right, particularly when we have the chance to eliminate some pretty terrible diseases.”

Rewarding trip for audiologist

Rolleston-based audiologist Brenna Sincock has returned from an intense, but rewarding week, treating patients at Rarotonga Hospital.

The director of Brenna Sincock Hearing, who has Mid Canterbury clients, was invited on the humanitarian trip, co-ordinated by the Ministry of Health for the Cook Islands.

She worked closely with hearing nurses and Ear, Nose and Throat specialists (ENT), fitting hearing aids, doing check-ups and troubleshooting.

Sincock said people were overwhelmingly grateful for the support.

One lady, who spoke predominantly in Cook Island Maori, didn’t want to complain about a hissing noise in the aids, when she was first fitted.

“She spoke to her husband in Cook Island Maori and he said everything was fine,” she explains.

“I went on to say; “you might hear lots of new sounds like birds, footsteps and you might even be hearing the air conditioner now.

“As soon as she heard that she smiled and her husband said that, yes, she had told him that there was a windy noise in the aids, but not to tell me as she was just so grateful that she would have put up with it, and didn’t want to make a fuss.”

Sincock said one quiet young man, with quite a profound hearing loss, lit up with a huge smile when she turned on his new hearing aid.

“He was just so happy to hear again, and he was then confident enough to make conversation with me as he knew he would hear my replies,” she said.

“That was really rewarding.”

Based at Rarotonga Hospital, she worked nine-hour days from Monday to Friday in 30°C heat.

She fitted at least 30 people with aids, as well as doing lots of hearing tests for children before ENT appointments and also reviews for people who already had hearing aids.

Appointments were usually 30 minutes, but at times there were so many people, she would have

double-booked slots or even quadruple-booked slots at one stage.

“I sometimes had a line of people waiting at my door,” she said.

“It was such a rewarding experience, as everyone was so grateful for any help I could give them. I got lots of hugs and kisses from happy patients, and one patient even gave me a souvenir $3 Cook Island note – apparently the only $3 note in the world.”

Sincock wanted to thank everyone who donated hearing aids

for the trip, saying they were extremely well received and helped many people.

“Often, I didn’t get a chance to meet them or say thank you (to people who donated),” she said.

“I have some leftover that will be taken on the next trip, and I can still receive donations, as I will send these on to the team that goes next time.”

Branje hands over water petition Water campaigner Jen Branje handed over the nation’s petition calling for a moratorium on exporting water to MPs on the steps of the Beehive yesterday.

At the same time, people from around the country gathered outside council buildings to show their concern about water.

Outside Environment Canterbury in Christchurch, rally leader Peter Richardson said the council and rally-goers had a common interest in protecting the waterways and needed to work together.

“The message we want you to take away is to be active and be involved; to get involved in your local issues and get involved in every way you can.”

Labour’s water spokesperson David Parker received a petition, which has around 15,000 signatures, from Branje, whose campaign to Bung the Bore in Ashburton has become a nationwide forum to protect water.

She drove from Invercargill to Wellington over the past week drumming up

support for the 21 rallies that happened nationwide yesterday.

Green Party water spokesperson Catherine Delahunty said water was a precious, finite resource. “We need to love and protect it.”

She said the Greens in government would prioritise protecting our rivers, lakes and aquifers from pollution and over-extraction.

“We are calling for a hold on any new water bottling consents and a price on water for all commercial use – if water is being used for profit then companies should pay for the privilege.”

She said water would be a big issue for New Zealanders this election, and for many years to come.

In Ashburton this week Branje, who now lives in Invercargill, said she wanted people to stand up for better water management.

It didn’t matter where in New Zealand people lived, the future of water was the number one concern, she said.

Kaikoura quake complex one Four months on, scientists still sifting through the aftermath of the Kaikoura Earthquake say the 7.8 event could be the most complex ever recorded.

GNS Science experts shared their latest findings yesterday in a live public presentation, showing how a total 21 faults had ruptured in the November 14 midnight quake.

Earthquake geologist Dr Kate Clark said of those 21 faults activated, 14 had ruptured violently enough to displace land by more than a metre.

One of the most dramatic examples was along the Kekerengu Fault in Marlborough, where the land offset was as much as 12m, and in some places created walls of raised-up earth across the countryside.

That compared with the largest amount of offset recorded in New Zealand, the 18m horizontal land displacement created by the 8.2 Wairarapa Earthquake in 1855, and the most recent comparable event, the rupturing of the Greendale Fault in the September 2010 Darfield quake, which produced a maximum offset of 5m.

The Kaikoura Earthquake also eclipsed the 30-kilometre rupture distance of the Greendale Fault; once the 7.8 quake struck at its epicentre near Culverden in Canterbury, it tore across a distance of 180km, setting off the 21 faults in the process.

“We haven’t done a detailed analysis of comparing every quake that we know of, but we think it’s probably approaching or exceeding a world record, in terms of fault surface rupture complexity.”

Clark said those measurements, along with other data, observations made by drones and LiDAR remote sensing surveys, would help inform new topographic models to better measure the fault offsets.

“It was an incredibly complex earth-

quake. The more we are working on it, the more we are appreciating the complexity of it.”

Meanwhile, GNS scientist Dr William Power said tsunami gauge data recorded during the event could also better inform tsunami models.

Power said gauge readings taken at Kaikoura at the time of the quake showed that, in the 25 minutes immediately after, the tidal level dropped by 2.5m, “a classic natural warning sign for a tsunami”.

In the 15 minutes following that, the tide rose 4m from the lowest point, before a series of waves were recorded over several hours.

Notably, he added, the tide level changed by a metre in the event; reflecting the fact that gauge had been hauled up by that much along with a large stretch of the coastline it sat on.

Elsewhere, the tsunami registered on gauges long after, showing up in readings at Wellington’s Queens Wharf and Castlepoint an hour after, and at the Chatham Islands four to five hours following the event.

Power estimated the tsunami’s run-up height at Little Pigeon Bay, where a historic cottage was wrecked, reached 3m.

The force of the tsunami was enough to lift the unoccupied cottage from its foundations and flood it with water a metre deep, leaving debris stuck to its walls.

Power and his colleagues had since used tsunami debris, including washed up kina and seaweed, to help determine the tsunami’s run-up height.

GNS scientists were also busy trying to map the thousands of landslides created by the quake.

Engineering geologist Dr Sally Dellow said landslides had so far been mapped across an area of 5000sq km, about half of the total 10,000sq km area where landslides had occurred.

hanks to your donations, and the hard work of one local audiologist, Mid Canterbury and its surrounds has helped the people of Rarotonga receive the gift of hearing.

This was the result of a successful campaign that saw people who had upgraded their hearing aids in New Zealand, donate to Brenna Sincock in record numbers.

All it took was her expert knowledge and a slight tweak, before they were given a new lease of life and re-gifted to a person in need.

The initiative was set up by her colleague, Scott Wright, about 15 years ago, and now the Ministry of Health for the Cook Islands, funds specialist teams annually.

For Brenna, who is used to seeing about eight clients per day, she was thrown in at the deep end, seeing up to 50.

This kind of voluntary work should not go unnoticed, nor should we dismiss the impact these services have on people in the Pacific.

It highlights a broader issue of Kiwis giving up time at their own practices and workplaces to help others.

In the same spirit as wonderful charities, such as The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ, Smiles For The Pacific, and the Uplift Project (which last year collected and distributed thousands of correctly-fitting bras); it proves the Kiwi spirit is alive and well and ready to help our Pacific neighbours.

Whether it’s the gift of sound, the gift of sight, or the gift of a smile; this work is truly lifechanging.

Brenna found this out when she saw the reaction on the faces of those she helped.

She spoke of a little boy, who turned up quiet and shy, but once he could hear and understood what people were saying to him, left a confident young man; and of the elderly woman who was so thrilled to hear, she didn’t want to make a fuss when she heard an odd noise emitted through her new aids.

These were only two of the heart-warming stories made possible with local generosity and support.

A little help – be it donating something you no longer use, or donating your time and services – goes a long way for those in need.

When we explained the Ashburton SPCA is run completely by volunteers and must act within the law of the Animal Welfare Act of 1999, Alison felt maybe we need to be looking at the act as a whole.

And again, it seems to be boiling down to more need for education surrounding the issue.

Infometrics shine a light on Ashburton A

shburton companies and organisations now have a wealth of information for developing strong business strategies, thanks to the release of the Infometrics 2016 Ashburton District Annual Economic Profile.

Infometrics compiles data from a range of sources, including Statistics New Zealand, the Inland Revenue Department and Paymark. Our council purchased the right to the information last year.

What interests me most about this data is the very positive light that it shines on our district and how well it is performing against New Zealand as a whole.

For example, our local Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measured $1845 million in the year to March 2016, up 4.0 per cent from a year earlier. New

Zealand’s GDP increased by 2.5 per cent over the same period of time.

As you might expect, primary industries accounted for the largest proportion of GDP (28.9 per cent) in our district.

Secondary industries also accounted for more of our GDP than the national average. Employment in Ashburton rose 3.1 per cent from March, 2015, to March, 2016, compared to a national increase of 2.7 per cent.

Agriculture, foresty and fish-

ing employed the most people, accounting for 25.5 per cent of total employment.

This industry grouping accounts for only 6.2 per cent of total employment in New Zealand.

The second largest employing industries were manufacturing (2843), followed by retail trade (1764).

The data also shows that people are choosing to raise their families and retire here.

There were both more young people aged under 15 and more older people over 65 years living here than the national averages.

Ashburton is a great place to buy a house.

In 2016, the average house value in the district was $336,006, compared to the New Zealand median of $557,143.

burton District were less than the New Zealand mean but had increased by 3.8 per cent compared to a 3.1 per cent increase across the country.

Overall, these infometrics paint a picture of a strong healthy community where businesses, particularly in primary and secondary industries, are thriving.

Mum, son found dead The little boy found dead in his Hillside apartment with his New Zealand mother yesterday has been described as a “little angel”.

Stacey Docherty and 4-year-old Seth’s bodies were found in their eastern beaches unit about 1.30pm on Monday, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Ms Docherty’s ex-partner and the father of her son is believed to have raised the alarm when he knocked on the door and no one answered.

He took to Facebook yesterday to express his grief.

“I’m going through some gnarly process but will get through this,” he said. “I will post some pics of me and my son for those (many) who never had the pleasure of seeing him. I feel grateful for a brief time I got to be a father to a beautiful little boy.”

Police have been investigating whether their deaths were the result of a murder-suicide or whether a third person was involved.

They said it was still being officially treated as suspicious.

Fairfax Media reports that “rambling ... barely decipherable words” were written all over the walls of the unit with blood when emergency

services discovered the pair’s bodies around 1.20pm.

Docherty’s Facebook account says she worked as a nursing assistant and that she was originally from New Zealand. Her Facebook page says she attended Cashmere High School.

She posted many snaps of her hugging her son and of them playing in a nearby park or at the beach.

Stacey also wrote about being sick of all the “bullshit” in her life and how she was working out what tattoo to get on herself for her son after he was born.

Neighbours have said that Docherty was involved in several incidents where police had to be called while living at the apartment on Grace Campbell Crescent.

They said that Family and Community Service workers were regularly seen checking on them and claimed Seth had been “failed” by the system.

Bidhan Mondal lived near the mother and son and said he was unable to sleep because he was so saddened and disturbed by their deaths.

“I couldn’t sleep at all last night all I could see was the face of the little boy, he was a beautiful little angel,” he said.

Urban ‘abandoned’ family He’s got a $75 million fortune, a $2.7 million car and a wife who’s a Hollywood star but it seems not all of Keith Urban’s family is living the high life. New Idea claims the 49-year-old superstar – who, with wife Nicole Kidman forges one of the world’s top celebrity couples – has “abandoned” his older brother Shane, a single father-of-three from Queensland.

While Keith regularly appears at A-list events, Shane is left to live and work a far less luxurious lifestyle. While Keith drives a lavish Bugati Veyron and has multiple properties worldwide, his sibling simply owns a beaten-up Toyota and a modest $400,000 home.

Sex slavery A teenage girl was forced to have sex with more than 1000 men over two years at a motel in Philadelphia, a lawsuit claims.

The girl was forced into “sex slavery” with men up to four times her age at the Roosevelt Inn in the north-east of the city, her lawyer has claimed.

The teenager, who was just 14 when the alleged abuse began, is suing the motel, its manager and the company that owns it.

The now 17-year-old girl claims she was paid $50 to have sex with several hundred men at the motel after being forced into prostitution in 2013, CBS Philadelphia reported.

The lawsuit – filed against the Roosevelt Inn, its parent company UFVS Management Company and the motel manager Yagna Patel – claims the alleged ordeal continued into 2014.

The motel is alleged to have provided rooms for human traffickers, but Patel, 72, denied any knowledge of this.

“This child was forced into sex slavery, paid to do things with men double, triple, quadruple her age,” her attorney Nadeem Bezar said.

Fellow lawyer Tom Kline added: “You have to be blind deaf and dumb not to know that over 100 men are showing up over a period of a couple days.

“You have a cleaning crew that comes into the room and often times finds boxes or waste cans full of used condoms. This is about as open and obvious as it gets. You can’t have a line of johns out the front door and around the room waiting without them knowing the linen service was extraordinary. The front desk would direct the traffic to the room of this child.”

The family of the Careless Whisper hitmaker – who passed away from natural causes on Christmas Day aged 53 – are reportedly fearful of people stealing tributes left by friends and relatives at Highgate Cemetery, north London, and have therefore decided to increase security around the burial site.

The family have also remained tightlipped regarding the date of George’s funeral, conscious that a string of anticipated celebrity guests, such as Sir Elton John, Martin Kemp and ex-Wham! star Andrew Ridgeley, could cause the event to descend into a circus.

Renee into the limelight It’s all about dancing for Renee Stewart, daughter of former-supermodel Rachel Hunter and rocker Rod Stewart. Since growing up away from the limelight, 24-year-old Renee has found her stride on stage, whether it be dancing or walking the catwalk for top fashion houses.

Having finished her BA at the London Contemporary Dance School, her life has been immersed in the dancing world. She rarely drinks or goes to parties because if she’s not in a dance studio she’s in a gym, at a yoga class or cooking in the house she shares with friends. “I’ve definitely eaten a lot of beans on toast since I’ve been in London. I don’t have money to blow on fancy restaurants.”

Another example showed an island holiday to Fiji was $71 more expensive than the “from $699” price it was advertised for, once a service fee quoted by the travel agent to Consumer NZ was added.

“These charges, often called booking or service fees, are increasingly common in the travel and entertainment industries,” she said.

“But they’re not included in the advertised price, misleading consumers about what they actually have to pay.”

Sue Chetwin Adding fees to the advertised price was known as “drip pricing”, Chetwin said.

“By the time the add-ons are revealed, consumers are more likely to be committed to the purchase and less likely to shop around.

“While the Fair Trading Act prohibits misleading representations about price, it hasn’t been effective at stopping drip-pricing practices.”

Chetwin said New Zealand should follow the lead of countries like Australia, where companies were prohibited from advertising a component of a price without prominently displaying the total amount. The Commerce Commission has previously recommended similar rules be included in laws here.

Consumer NZ encouraged participants to name and shame companies they thought had the worst sneaky fees, either in a comment on the website or via email.

A day after it was revealed that potentially millions of caged eggs could have been sold by Palace Poultry as free-range, two freerange egg brands fear they may have sold eggs that were caged.

Zeagold eggs, the company that operates the Woodlands and Farmer Brown brands, said it had purchased eggs from Palace Poultry in the last year, and was now “extremely concerned” that the eggs received were not freerange.

Kiwi retailer Briscoe Group has posted a record full year profit in an industry chief executive Rod Duke says is challenging.

The company which owns Briscoes, Rebel Sport, and Living and Giving posted a net profit after tax of $59.42 million for the year ended January, a 26.06 per cent increase on the $47.14m from the previous year.

“We are pleased to announce another record profit for Briscoe Group in a market that has been challenging for many retailers,” Duke said.

“The focus we place on managing and improving our retail brands underpins our strong profit growth of recent years as we continually drive to improve the way we do things in every area of the business.”

Duke said the result was an increase of 77 per cent on the result from three years ago at an annual growth rate of 21 per cent for the same period.

The earnings were generated on sales revenue of $582.84m, an increase of 5.42 per cent on the $552.89m reported in the previous year.

The Group’s gross profit margin for the year increased from 40.49 per cent to 41.07 per cent, reflecting the continued focus the Group has on inventory and promotion management.

Consumers are paying up to $68 million in sneaky “service” or “booking” fees added by retailers to advertised prices.

Consumer NZ revealed the figure yesterday, calling for the Fair Trading Act to include rules requiring businesses to disclose the full cost of products up front.

Chief executive Sue Chetwin said its latest survey found more than two-thirds of consumers had been stung by extra fees when buying goods and services.

A similar amount, 68 per cent, agreed retailers should have to disclose the total price in their advertising, Consumer NZ’s survey found.

Specifically Pacific Fijian chicken curry 8 boneless chicken thighs 2 large potatoes, cut into cubes 1 can crushed tomatoes 1 can coconut milk 1/2 C water 2T peanut oil, 1 onion, sliced 3-4 garlic cloves, crushed 1t salt 1t yellow mustard seeds 2t cumin seed 2T garam masala 1t ground turmeric 2-3 red birds eye chillies or 1t chilli flakes 2-3cm knob of fresh ginger 8 curry leaves Coriander and lemon juice to serve ■ In a heavy-based saucepan heat oil on medium heat.

■ Cook onion for 4-5 minutes, until colour changes. Add garlic, ginger and spices and cook for a couple of minutes until mustard seeds begin to pop and the mix is fragrant.

■ Add potato, curry leaves, potatoes, canned tomatoes, coconut milk, water and salt.

■ Cover and simmer for about 5 minutes, add chicken and tomatoes and continue simmering until chicken is cooked through.

■ Season to taste.

■ Serve with rice and roti.

■ Garnish with coriander when plated.

Chop suey Pasifika style 500g chicken skinned chicken thighs sliced into thin strips 250g vermicelli 1 large diced onion 2cm fresh grated ginger 4 cloves crushed garlic 1/2 C soy sauce

2T oyster sauce 2-3C fresh vegetables, try using ribbons of carrot, courgettes, sliced green beans, celery and capsicums.

■ Place the vermicelli in boiled water and allow to soak until softened.

■ In heavy-based saucepan, heat oil on medium. Add onion, garlic and ginger and cook until soft.

■ Turn up heat, add chicken and fry until it starts browning.

■ Add soy sauce and simmer for a few minutes.

■ Drain and roughly chop the vermicelli with kitchen scissors.

■ Add vermicelli to the saucepan, along with oyster sauce and veges and simmer for 5 minutes.

In brief

To bet, or not to bet ...

A

s someone who doesn’t mind the odd sporting wager, or chucking a dollar or two on the geegees every now and then, when a case about a sporting star breaking gambling rules emerges, my interest is always piqued.

West Tigers NRL star Tim Simona made headlines last week when he went public and revealed he had been betting on games, including matches he had been playing in.

Of the known facts, one thing is very clear, Simona was not very good at it.

Between March and August last year, he placed 65 bets totalling just over $900 and of those 65 bets only one was a winner.

That’s a 1.54 per cent success rate.

Horrible stuff really.

His one successful bet, incidentally, was putting $10 on himself to score two or more

tries in a match.

He made $180 for his efforts.

As a sporting fan, I’ve got no problem with Simona having a bet on himself like that.

If you’re a Tigers fan you know that he is going to step out and give his all to score two or more tries for his side.

In fact maybe we should make a few of the Warriors do the same each week – or find the option for Shaun Johnson to run at the line on 15 occasions and tell him to chuck his week’s wages on it.

But the bottom line is, Simona broke the rules – as warped as some of them may be.

Gambling is a frowned upon pastime in this day and age.

There are any number of groups out there ready to jump on the bandwagon of legislation of gambling at any chance they might get.

So as a sporting star, you’re just better off not doing it.

Champion Kiwi jockey, James McDonald, found himself in a similar boat.

He copped an 18-month ban from riding because he placed a $1000 bet, through a high profile punter, on a horse he was riding to win – netting himself $4000.

Now McDonald is not a poor man.

In fact, he probably owns half the Waikato region by now.

So in financial terms, the negative impact of a loss from that bet or the positive outcome of a win, were insignificant.

But it’s the fact he did it, when

racing rules clearly state it’s not allowed.

Yet as a person who follows the racing industry closely, I’d be more inclined to allow jockeys and drivers or even sporting stars to have a bet on themselves to succeed.

Like I said before, they’re going to try a lot harder to win if they do, aren’t they?

So is there a middle ground in this situation?

A place where we can find a happy equilibrium where if someone wants to have a bet on themselves, whether they be a jockey or a rugby league player, they can do so without being forced out of the game?

It would appear not and so we will continue to see stories of guys, and girls, who get caught having a flutter.

I’ll just thank my lucky stars they don’t allow betting on indoor bowls ….

Lions a mystery bag

By GreGor Paul Last weekend’s round of Six Nations games perfectly illustrated the potential of the British Lions to turn up in New Zealand, and be either brilliant or hopeless.

They straddle such a fine line between exploding into life and playing a lethal brand of rugby in New Zealand, or imploding, as they fail to leave behind old scores, national grudges and long-held contempt for one another.

How good they could be was best seen at Twickenham, where England clicked into top gear and played what can only be described as their version of shockand-awe rugby.

At the heart of their performance was extreme physicality, but it wasn’t like the old England of previous decades, where that muscularity was suffocating and pedestrian.

This was different.

This was highly conditioned, big athletes playing at pace and with dynamism.

This was England fulfilling everyone else’s long-held fear that they would be such a good side, if they could inject agility, mobility and pace into their forward pack.

Players such as Maro Itoje and Courtney Lawes typify England’s new direction.

These two have work ethic and hunger to sit alongside their natural athleticism, and it’s almost freaky that they can both interchange between lock and blindside with such ease.

The All Blacks would love two athletes – two players – of their respective calibre, but the show doesn’t stop there.

England are using their forwards to create and then exploit space, which is another new trick they have learned under coach Eddie Jones.

With that, they have given the likes of Johnathan Joseph and Elliot Daly the platform to show they are class acts.

Lions coach Warren Gatland

Hurricanes utility back Nehe Milner-Skudder will miss at least six weeks of Super Rugby after fracturing his foot against the Chiefs. Milner-Skudder, 26, came down awkwardly on his right foot in the wet on Friday and was escorted from the field as his side lost 26-18. Scans yesterday then revealed a small fracture in his foot, which requires rest but not surgery.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen would prefer NZ local derbies to be scheduled later in the season to help avoid the early spate of injuries to international players. By coincidence, governing body Sanzaar met over the weekend to debate the future format of a competition that may just have lost its way.

Hansen said he was happy to leave those decisions to Sanzaar, but observed that the intensity of all-NZ derbies was taking a toll on under-prepared players, especially All Blacks coming off a mandated 12-week break.

McKenzie being patient

England’s Owen Farrell may well require his kicking boots for the Lions tour this year. isn’t going to have any problem finding 37 quality players – men who can play at pace, with enough crunch and creativity to be serious contenders to win the test series.

England will no doubt provide the bulk of the squad, but Ireland, Scotland and Wales will all contribute players, and on paper at least, the squad of 2017 will stand comparison with the great Lions team of 1971.

But here’s the rub.

Can Gatland meld his squad into a cohesive, unified group who can put the team ahead of their personal ambitions?

Can he persuade all those he takes to forgive any slights – real or imagined – that may have occurred during the Six Nations and turn long-term enemies into friends in the space of just a few weeks?

The enormity of that task shouldn’t be underestimated.

Serving as evidence of how hard that is going to be is exhibit A – the weekend sledge delivered

by Wales first-five Dan Biggar to Irish opposite Johnny Sexton.

The latter was yellow-carded for killing the ball on his own line and as the card was brandished, Biggar sought him out and said: “Cheers, Johnny boy ... have a good day, son”.

Hardly malicious or off the scale, but indicative nonetheless of the edge between Ireland and Wales.

These two have developed a healthy dislike of one another, a point confirmed by Gatland himself last year in his capacity as Wales coach.

“Probably, out of all the teams in the Six Nations, the Welsh players dislike the Irish the most,” he said.

“Players’ experiences against Ireland haven’t always been the greatest, so they are very motivated.”

The Scots and English have a similarly poor relationship that has festered for years, and there is a danger that the Lions bring the greatest squad in their history, only for it to be disastrously riven with factions and ill-feeling.

Finding harmony and common purpose is going to be harder for the Lions than finding a winning gameplan.

Keeping personal relationships positive and driven towards the bigger goal of winning the series is going to be harder than picking the right starting team.

The Lions are going to be compelling, but the question for Gatland is whether the fascination will be with their excellence or dysfunction.

Williamson continues rise up the rankings Black Caps captain Kane WIlliamson is now second on the International Cricket Council’s test rankings list, while Virat Kohli continues to plummet down the rankings, with India’s skipper now the fourth best batsman on the charts.

Kohli started the four-test series against Australia ranked second. Some judges may have regarded him as the best batsman in the world after posting a double- ton in each of India’s previous four series.

But the gap between Kohli and Steve Smith has widened – at least on the ICC’s rankings.

Kohli was one of India’s most influential players in the second test, despite his lack of runs.

The 28-year-old fired up the heaving crowd and team-mates, while his verbals seemingly rattled some of the visiting batsmen.

“He’s obviously quite passionate, but I just think he’s frustrated because he hasn’t scored runs and he’s letting his emotions get the better of him,” former Australia spearhead Mitchell Johnson wrote in a recent column.

“He was giving a send-off to just about every player, which you’ve got to be very careful with.”

The four-test series, currently level at 1-1, continues in Ranchi tomorrow.

Damien McKenzie is happy to bide his time at the back before Aaron Cruden’s departure to France at the end of the Super Rugby competition. McKenzie has played the bulk of his rugby at fullback for the Chiefs, a position where he was able to play two tests for the All Blacks. The Waikato first five maintains he’s just keen to keep playing his part for the franchise after they picked up their third straight win, against the Hurricanes on Friday.“I’m loving my time at 15 but I’m preparing for both positions because if you’re chucked in there you have to be able to lead the team around the park.”

Vatuvei replaces Tui Lolohea, who is shifted to a extended interchange bench.

Kieran Foran was, as expected, not included in the 21 man squad.

His shoulder is still not ready for contact, though coach Stephen Kearney said there was “a chance” he could play next week.

Captain Roger Tuivasa-Sheck has been named at fullback, despite leaving the field with concussion in the first half of the 26-10 loss to the Storm.

“He’s going along well,” said Kearney.

“It’s a bit of a process the head protocol.

He has another one of the tests tomorrow (Wednesday) so we will see how he pulls up.”

Gallen wants tough line The cocaine use which contributed to Tim Simona and Ben Barba’s NRL downfalls could have been avoided with the promise of automatic twoyear bans if caught, according to Paul Gallen. Gallen is calling for the NRL to do away with the threestrikes illicit-drugs policy and adopt a zero-tolerance approach – an idea that would have prevented former Cronulla team-mate Barba playing in last year’s premiership. “If they want to really deter it, make it illegal (under NRL rules),” Sharks captain Gallen said yesterday.
