The targets of an attempted home invasion in Ashburton on Monday evening have a message of compassion for the would-be intruder.

Armed with a pistol, a man rang the doorbell of Jim and Ida Heath’s Todd Place residence shortly before 8pm.

Jim answered the door and was confronted by the man who demanded to be allowed inside. The 78-year-old former pastor wasn’t having a bar of it and responded by tackling the would-be intruder, knocking him down a flight of stairs and landing on top of him.

However, he said neither he nor his wife were fearful following their encounter, describing it as “a sign of the times”.

He would like to tell the man who attempted to break into his home, there is hope for a better life. “We don’t know what sort of pressure people are under – we are so critical of other people and things will get worse unless we show more compassion,” he said.

“Of course they (offenders) have to take responsibility for themselves, but they have to see something in us when they come to that point. As citizens we have to change as well.

“If they think we don’t care they will never change. They will go on behaving like that with a chip on their shoulder.”

Police are investigating the attempted home invasion.

Police generally discourage anyone from confronting an offender, especially one who is armed or aggressive, Detective Sergeant Richard Quested said.

“The main focus should be on protecting themselves and others around them, and on contacting police as soon they are able to safely do so,” he said.

House prices rise in May

Ashburton was one of Canterbury’s star performers in May when it came to rising house prices.

The median price of a house sold in the Ashburton District that month was $370,000, up from $335,000 in April.

The median price, however dipped from that achieved in May 2016, $375.000.

Mackenzie, up 19.1 per cent, was the only district in Canterbury to have a higher month on month rise. The two districts also showed the greatest price drop over May 2016 – Mackenzie was down 26.2 per cent and Ashburton, 1.3 per cent.

REINZ regional director Jim Davis described the Canterbury market as generally quieter and while there were people actively looking for homes, few were prepared to put pen to paper.

“Vendors have become more realistic in their price expectations, although some are holding back from offering their properties for sale because of the paucity of active buyers in the market,” he said.

Sales volumes were up in May compared to April (58 compared to 42) and steady on May 2016.

It took an average of 38 days to sell a home.

Canterbury was one of just two regions in New Zealand to see its median sales price drop, year on year.

Of the 7354 homes sold in May across New Zealand, 1066 sold for more than $1 million. The bulk – 3319 – sold for under $500,000.

District’s schools recognise support staff

Mid Canterbury teacher aides, receptionists and other school support staff enjoyed a morning tea shout and words of encouragement yesterday.

Hundreds of support staff throughout the district’s schools marked Support Staff Day 2017, where the NZEI union raised awareness of its fight for increased pay.

NZEI Te Riu Roa president Lynda Stuart referred to the recent victory of aged care workers for pay equity, and said it was good to see commitment from the government in relation to support staff.

“It finally feels like genuine progress is being made,” Stuart said.

Allenton School principal Graham Smith said teachers at the school covered for about 15 support staff so they could leave their posts and gather for morning tea.

“It was quite unusual to have all the support staff in one spot,” he said.

He gave gifts out but told recipients it did not make up for their lack of pay.

Most teacher aide funding came out of schools’ individual operations grants, which can be topped up by fundraising.

While he supported calls for

pay equity, he believed support staff should be paid from central government funding, otherwise some schools were disadvantaged in what positions they could afford.

Ashburton Borough School principal Sam Winterbourn said a morning tea was held at both Borough and the Lagmhor satellite site, and at Borough there was about 22 support staff including about 17 teacher aides.

Historically support staff positions in New Zealand were an extension of parent help, but now came with higher expectations and were task specific, yet payment for many remained around the minimum wage.

The gender issue aside, it was more so about what was perceived to be valued, and the work of support staff was undervalued.

Government would need to increase operations grant funding in order to cover any support staff pay increases.

At Hampstead School special morning teas were held, and support staff were presented with small gift packs and certificates to recognise their contributions.

Teacher aide Debbie Shea said the presentation was lovely, but she always felt appreciated at the school.

“We get quite spoilt here,” she said.

Historic fire equipment changes hands Fire fighting equipment that was in its prime more than 50 years ago is about to be officially passed into the ownership of several Ashburton District museums.

With the district set to become part of an enlarged southern rural

fire district when Fire and Emergency New Zealand comes into effect next month, the district council will no longer have any involvement in rural fire fighting.

Rather than leave the historic items in its ownership, a move that would come with the risk

that they could be sold by the fire service in the future, the council has opted to gift the items to their current caretakers.

The five rural fire plant items date back to the 1950s and 1960s and have significant historical value to the district.

Their links with the district will now be protected as the trucks and pump units pass into the ownership of the Plains Museum, Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade, The Terrace and the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade supporters group museum.

Families, friends urged to be aware of elder abuse

Mid Cantabrians need to keep an eye out for elderly family members, and if they have concerns about abuse, seek help.

That is the advice of Age Concern Ashburton, highlighting Elder Abuse Awareness Week from yesterday to June 22.

Age Concern Ashburton president Trish Small and secretary manager Dianna Leonard were installing a display at The Arcade yesterday.

Elder abuse victims were often reluctant to talk about the issue, and abuse was most often at the hands of family members, Small said.

Nationally Age Concern works closely with victims and their families, responding to each referral, assessing the victim’s situation and providing intervention and support.

In the year to June 2016, the organisation received 2121 referrals where abuse was suspected. Data shows 79 per cent of alleged abusers were family members. Levels and types of abuse included 79 per cent psychological, 51 per cent financial, 22 per cent physical and 21 per cent neglect.

“That’s one of the biggest problems if a family member is involved, the older person is very reluctant (to report it), which is understandable,” Small said.

Salvation Army shop badly damaged

Ashburton Salvation Army Family Store staff and customers have been left reeling in shock after a vehicle ploughed through a brick wall into the building yesterday.

A Range Rover smashed through the Wills Street wall of the store at about 2.30pm, coming to a halt in the middle of the clothing section.

A pregnant woman with a child in a stroller was in the fitting rooms at the time. The mother and child

were taken to Ashburton Hospital for assessment, but despite the near miss, escaped uninjured but very shaken, Salvation Army Major Nigel Luscombe said.

Two staff members and a handful of other customers were unharmed but were also in shock, he said.

The driver of the vehicle was able to get out of the vehicle himself and was assessed at the scene but did not require medical treatment, a St John spokesperson said.

Major Luscombe left the charity’s Christchurch HQ as soon as he received word of the incident.

He too was shocked by what had occurred and the extent of the damage, but his primary concern was for the staff and customers in the building at the time.

“At this point we are not 100 per cent sure what happened,” he said.

However, the incident was not believed to have been deliberate and the driver of the vehicle was

understood to have been dropping off goods in the collection area behind the building immediately beforehand.

He was known to be a “good supporter” of the charity, Luscombe said.

“We have been left with an insecure building and a lot of damage but we are very grateful no one was injured,” he said.

Delays in earthquake prone building alerts

More than 800 buildings around the Ashburton District will shortly be sporting brightly coloured stickers alerting the public to their earthquake safety rating.

Applying those stickers was a task the Ashburton District Council planned to start from July 1, but with less than three weeks to go, the alert system has ground to a halt, council building services manager Michael Wong said.

The Kaikoura earthquakes have pushed the Government initiated project back at least two months, with design work still to be done.

He anticipates the alert system will begin in September.

The council currently maintains a register of the district’s commercial buildings and where they sit in terms of compliance with national building standards, new legislation means the register will become public creating headaches for some building owners, Wong said.

“What this means is that buildings that are below 33 per cent of the standard will have a sticker or placard placed on them to alert the public. “It’ll say something along the lines of the building being rated at below a percentage of the national building standards

The family of the man whose body was found inside an exploded car are shattered by his death.

The man was inside a wagon that exploded in Jardine Park about 9pm on Wednesday and is believed to be Christchurch man Kurt Sturgess. Post 2012 the council was required to do a desktop assessment of all buildings constructed before 1976, this will now be extended to include buildings constructed before 2005.

The council has 10 years to assess the 800 buildings that will now come into the pool. Owners

of those identified as earthquake prone will have one year to have an engineering report completed and if work is required, they will then have 25 years in which to either carry this out or undertake demolition.

The new timeframe is far less punitive than the current regime, where buildings that are below 33 per cent of the national building

High Viz tickets to alert motorists Come July there will be no excuses for having a vehicle with an expired warrant of fitness or registration.

The Ashburton District Council is about to introduce a warning system that will alert motorists when the expiry date for either is looming, and it’s a warning that won’t be easy to ignore.

Council environmental monitoring manager Rick Catchpowle said the council’s parking wardens had issued warnings in the past but these were easily confused with parking infringement

notices. That confusion will disappear when the new high visibility tickets are introduced.

A 28 day period is allowed once a warrant or rego expires and wardens will issue warnings towards the end of that period. The council wanted to make sure people had every opportunity to make their vehicles legal before that grace period ended, Catchpowle said.

“It’s not all about enforcement, it’s about education and information; enforcement is the last resort,” he said.

A Kapiti man who beat up his stepdaughter’s rapist acted “out of love”, the Wellington District Court heard this morning. Judge Peter Butler said he would not send the man to prison but nor would he discharge him without conviction.

He sentenced him to 240 hours of community work, noting the victim’s injuries were “superficial”.

The man was convicted this year after assaulting his daughter’s rapist, Jason Haward. Haward was convicted this year of that rape.

Filmed during burglary A man filmed by a Christchurch homeowner allegedly leaving her property has appeared in court yesterday charged with burglary.

Brendon James Smith, 44, and a 36-year-old woman have been charged over the alleged burglary in the suburb of Avonhead on Friday. Smith appeared from custody at Christchurch District Court yesterday. He made no application for bail and was remanded in custody without plea to June 26. “Police have spoken with the victim who was pleased to hear of the arrests,” a police statement said.

Coastline hit by tsunami 600 years ago

Mid Canterbury’s tsunami risk remains unchanged despite indications from a new historic map documenting fewer big waves than other areas.

The New Zealand Palaeotsunami Database, recently compiled from old spreadsheet and historic documents, enables searching for palaeotsunami records by location, time and strength of scientific validity.

The map reveals palaeotsunamis have occurred along almost all parts of the New Zealand coastline with greater concentrations on the east and west coasts of the upper half of the North Island.

A palaeotsunami is a tsunami that occurred before written records existed and has been discovered by investigating geological and anthropological evidence.

The map indicates just one event in the Mid Canterbury area, at the Rakaia River mouth, 1250 to 1350 AD. It was caused by an earthquake, deposits reached some five metres above sea level and extended an estimated 200 metres inland.

Ashburton District Council emergency management officer Don Geddes welcomed the new map, but said it did not change anything from the perspective of Civil Defence.

The same message, of “long or strong get gone” still applied to people living in these areas, which included South Rakaia huts, lower Hakatere huts, Wakanui Beach, North Rangitata Huts and Ashton Beach.

Geddes was currently working on a draft tsunami response plan for Mid Canterbury, in consultation with residents of these communities.

The plan would address a range of things highlighted from last year’s Kaikoura earthquake and tsunami, such as what happens once people evacuate, security and cordons, and processes for people to know where to get information from regarding when they can return to their homes.

Historic records reveal in a collection of coloured dots that Mid Canterbury’s coastline has been relatively free from ancient tsunamis, but that is no reason to be complacent, say emergency planners.

environmental managers, Civil Defence staff, researchers and the wider public.

The assortment and age of records, going back to pre-historic times, meant some were regarded with less confidence than others, and researchers included a colour coding system on the map to indi-

cate the level of scientific veracity.

King said there was strong evidence that New Zealand’s biggest tsunami occurred between 1450 and 1480 AD at Henderson Bay, Northland, where deposits reached some 32 metres above sea level and extended about 1000 metres inland.

Climate change to affect native animals Climate change may threaten one of our more reclusive native animals, according to Lincoln University research.

Trapdoor spiders are found throughout New Zealand, springing out from their concealed burrows to capture prey.

Dr Vikki Smith, while carrying out her PhD Research at Lincoln, has found current models of future climate change in New Zealand do not bode well for trapdoor spider populations on the West Coast, and in Tasman, Central Otago, and Southland.

The regions are all predicted to see increased rainfall, which makes an area less suitable as a habitat for trapdoor spiders.

“The spiders were more likely to be present where the rainfall was below 1000mm per year, and no populations were found in areas with more than 3000mm per year,” Dr Smith said.

She could only speculate about why the spiders don’t like a lot of rain.

“They can cope with brief periods of intense rainfall, but constant high levels may cause harmful fungus to grow quickly in their burrows, or it may affect their ability to catch prey.

“I have noticed that trapdoor spiders will not catch prey on

rainy nights,” she said.

The full extent of the impacts of losing trapdoor spiders cannot be predicted, due to their many complex and unknown interactions with the environment.

“They are vital parts of their ecosystems: they control insect populations, provide food for birds and lizards, and are hosts for

at least three different parasites (wasps, fungi, and worms).

“Losing trapdoor spiders would remove a food source for native animals, which may put increased pressure on their other food sources, particularly spiders,” Dr Smith said.

jor predator, which may put more pressure on their food sources, such as native plants.

“Parasitic wasps, fungi, and worms would be particularly badly affected. Some may rely entirely on trapdoor spiders for reproduction, and may therefore become locally extinct, while others will have to use alternative hosts, in-

cluding other native spiders.”

Climate change could also threaten other species.

“It’s hard to tell what effect climate change will have on our native species, but marine and coastal species are most likely to be affected due to changes in sea level and temperature, according to climate models.

“Tuatara may be affected badly as the sex of an embryo is determined by incubation temperature, and tuatara have long generation times and little genetic diversity so their adaptability is limited.”

However, invasive species and habitat loss remain the greatest threats to native New Zealand species in general, Dr Smith said.

People could help trapdoor spiders by checking clay banks for burrows before landscaping, and putting any unwanted spider visitors outside rather than killing them.

“If you like trapdoor spiders, spread the word – try to discourage any of your neighbours from using insect or spider control services by talking to them about how interesting and important the animals are,” Dr Smith added.

Fire rips through high-rise Firefighters battled a massive fire in a 27-floor high-rise apartment building in west London for several hours yesterday.

London’s Metropolitan Police said a number of people were being treated for a range of injuries, but did not provide more specifics. London Mayor Sadiq Khan said on Twitter that a major incident had been declared.

Flames and smoke were still shooting from the windows of the Grenfell Tower in North Kensington more than four hours after the blaze started around 1am London time. It was not clear if there were residents trapped, but people at the scene spoke of not being able to reach friends and family who had been inside.

Nassima Boutrig, who lives opposite the building, said she was awakened by sirens and smoke so thick that it filled her home as well.

“We saw the people screaming,” she said. “A lot of people said ‘Help, help, help.’

The fire brigade could only help downstairs. It was fire up, up, up. They couldn’t stop the fire.”

Boutrig said her friend’s brother, wife and children lived in the building and that her friend was waiting to find out if they were okay.

said 45 fire engines and 200 firefighters were called to the scene and Assistant Fire Commissioner Dan Daly said it was a large and very serious incident.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are working extremely hard in very difficult conditions to tackle this fire,” he said in a post on the brigade’s Facebook page.

Once the sun rose, smoke could be seen from miles away.

George Clarke, the presenter of Amazing Spaces, told Radio 5 Live he was covered in ash even though he was 100 metres from the scene.

He said he saw people waving flashlights from the top levels of the building and saw rescuers “doing an incredible job” trying to get people out.

Tim Downie, who lives not far away, told Britain’s Press Association that he feared the building could collapse.

He said he heard sirens, helicopters and shouting and then saw the building engulfed in flames.

“It’s the most terrifying thing I’ve ever seen. I just hope they have got everyone out,” he said. “People have been bringing water, clothes, anything they’ve got to help, out to the cordon.”

North Korea releases student; arrives in Ohio An American college student whose parents say has been in a coma while serving a 15year prison term in North Korea was released and returned to the United States yesterday as the Trump administration revealed a rare exchange with the reclusive country.

An airplane carrying Otto Warmbier, who’s from Ohio, arrived in Cincinnati. Warmbier was then taken by ambulance to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for

treatment. His release came during a visit to North Korea by former NBA star Dennis Rodman, one of few people to have met both North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and President Donald Trump.

Department of State spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters Rodman had nothing to do with Warmbier’s release. Rodman had told reporters before arriving in Pyongyang that the issue of Americans detained

by North Korea is “not my purpose right now”.

Securing Warmbier’s release “was a big priority” for President Donald Trump, who worked “very hard and very closely” with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.

Warmbier, a 22-year-old University of Virginia undergraduate, was convicted and sentenced in a one-hour trial in North Korea’s Supreme

Court in March 2016. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labour for subversion after he tearfully confessed that he had tried to steal a propaganda banner.

Warmbier’s parents, Fred and Cindy Warmbier, said he was in a coma and was flying home. They said they were told he has been in a coma since his trial, when he was last seen in public, and they had learned of this only one week ago.

Sessions vigorously denies Russia contacts Attorney General Jeff Sessions heatedly denied yesterday having an undisclosed meeting with Russia’s ambassador to the US and declared it was a “detestable and appalling lie” to suggest he was aware of or took part in any collusion between Russia and the election campaign that sent Donald Trump to the White House.

Testifying at a packed Senate hearing, Sessions, who was a close Trump adviser

during the battle for the presidency, also rejected any idea of misconduct in the ouster of FBI Director James Comey and vowed to defend his honour “against scurrilous and false allegations”.

In his dramatic appearance before former colleagues, Sessions contradicted a contention made by Comey at a hearing before the same panel last week. Comey told the intelligence committee that, after an encounter with

President Trump in which he said Trump pressured him to back off an investigation into the former national security adviser, Comey implored Sessions to make sure he was never left alone with the president again – but Sessions didn’t respond.

“He didn’t recall this, but I responded to his comment by agreeing that the FBI and Department of Justice needed to be careful to follow department policy regarding appro-

priate contacts with the White House,” Sessions said.

The former Alabama senator also defended himself against accusations that he misrepresented himself during his confirmation hearing when he said he hadn’t met with Russian officials during the campaign. Sessions argued that in the context of that hearing, “my answer was a fair and correct response to the charge as I understood it.”

Robert appeared on Celebrity Family Feud and his Aussie accent proved baffling for host Steve Harvey. “Something a five-year-old might ask a bank to loan him money to buy,” was the question. Robert was quick to respond. “A car!” he yelled out. Steve had no idea what exactly the 13-year-old said.

“What did you say?” the visibly baffled host replied. “A car,” Robert repeated.

And that’s when his mum Terri, who was born and grew up in the US, stepped in to do some translation.

Lip-lock ‘memorable’ Kiwi actor Ryan Cooper has revealed he is still savouring his lip-locking time with Scarlett Johansson, saying he still “holds a little bit” of the star’s breath in his lungs. Cooper told about his time working with the Hollywood super star on their film Rough Night, getting into detail about their time together. Of course, it wasn’t actually a kiss – or as Cooper called it, a “frenchie” – but he was still pretty pleased with getting mouth-to-mouth from Johansson and copping a “lungful of carbon dioxide from her”. Cooper plays a stripper in the movie but spent the majority of the movie pretending to be dead – hence the mouth to mouth.

nytime we hear about elder abuse, it makes for a difficult and shocking read.

Surely, it can’t happen in our community? In little, old New Zealand?

Unfortunately, it happens all too often, in many varied forms and levels.

Starting with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, which is held today, Elder Abuse Awareness Week runs from today through until next Thursday.

The fact we need an entire week to highlight these issues is scary in itself, but sadly the need is evident.

Yesterday, members of Age Concern Ashburton were at The Arcade installing information and encouraging Mid Cantabrians to keep an eye out for elderly family members.

Elder abuse victims were often reluctant to talk about the issue, and abuse was most often at the hands of family members, which also prevents people from reporting the crime.

According to Age Concern, more than three quarters of alleged abusers are family members; more than half of the alleged abusers are adult children or grandchildren and alleged abusers are as likely to be female as male.

These statistics have led to the creation of this year’s theme Elder Abuse Hits Close to Home.

The knowledge that Age Concern receives more than 2000 referrals of elder abuse every year – eight per week – is alarming. A silent, yet, vicious series of offences we just don’t hear enough about.

But they are targeted regardless and it needs to stop.

If you are being abused, or know of an older person who you think is being abused, contact 0800 32 668 65 your nearest Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention service, Age Concern, and in an emergency, call 111.

The varied list of ways this form of abuse can occur includes, psychological (harassment, humiliation); financial (unauthorised taking of money, misuse of power of attorney); physical (hitting, rough handling, over-medication); neglect (inadequate food, clothing, shelter, lack of social contact), sexual abuse (inappropriate touching, sexual acts with someone unable to give consent) and institutional abuse (lack of respect for a person’s culture or customs, inappropriate rationing).

It might seem like something that doesn’t happen in our neck of the woods, but unfortunately, it’s all too common.

Any form of elderly abuse is unacceptable.

Protecting and looking out for our elderly is paramount.

Industry lobby group DairyNZ is spearheading work to develop a strategy aimed at assisting dairy farmers reduce their carbon footprint.

Deputy Prime Minister Paula Bennett, who also has responsibility for climate change, announced the action plan at the National Fieldays event, which opened at Mystery Creek yesterday.

DairyNZ, which represents the country’s dairy farmers, is fronting the plan in partnership with dairy co-operative Fonterra, with support from the ministries of environment and primary industries.

The foundation of the national framework is expected to be complete by November 2018.

Within its scope DairyNZ will hold eight rural professional climate change workshops, name 12 climate change dairy farmer champions, host six discussions groups on climate change, and train 60 rural professionals on Massey University’s greenhouse gas course.

To reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the sector, the lobby group has committed to characterise and

install farm system changes that could potentially cut emissions on farms, and set up 10 partnership farms across a range of farming systems by February next year, while Fonterra will lead on-farm recording, committing to undertaking a recording pilot involving up to 100 suppliers.

Modern, science-based farming is the way to achieve a future for New Zealand where dairy farming has a lower environmental footprint, DairyNZ’s chief executive Dr Tim Mackle said.

“This plan lays down the foundation for dairy’s sustained, strategic approach to a lower carbon future.

We’re taking the first steps in understanding what dairy can do – in conjunction with the wider agri-

cultural sector, plus industry and urban communities – to help meet New Zealand’s Paris Agreement emissions reduction target.”

Addressing on-farm methane emissions, formed when ruminant animals burp, and nitrous oxide, formed when nitrogen escapes into the atmosphere – is one of the most challenging issues facing the dairy and food producing sectors, globally and in New Zealand.

“Tackling the reduction of onfarm emissions is not going to be easy. It requires our Government and the agricultural sector to work together and, as such, the plan is an important part of a broader work programme under way,” Mackle said.

Fake merchandise seized before game Up to four people were caught selling counterfeit merchandise outside Forsyth Barr Stadium, in Dunedin, on Tuesday night.

A spokeswoman from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) said with assistance from police it seized the merchandise before the Highlanders v Lions game.

New Zealand’s market watchdog has spent more than $1.65 million on external lawyers, investigators and other services in the Viaduct Capital and Mutual Finance case.

The trial of four directors of the failed companies was aborted in May after running for nine months.

The Financial Markets Authority – the prosecutor in the case – has confirmed it will push for a retrial of three of the four men.

Paul Bublitz, Bruce McKay, Richard Blackwood and Lance Morrison went on trial in the Auckland High Court last August for what was originally meant to be a 12-week case.

McKay and Blackwood served as directors of Viaduct Capital while Morrison and Bublitz were on Mutual Finance’s board.

The firms went into receivership in 2010, owing $17m.

Bublitz, according to prosecutors when the trial began last August, allegedly used the two finance companies to support his property investments.

The other defendants in the case were accused of helping him.

Push to put arable farming at the top The Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) has launched its 2017-2021 Strategy, which aims to make cropping the highest returning and most sustainable broadacre land use for New Zealand farmers.

Pyke said cropping farmers are dealing with a number of agronomic, climatic and compliance issues at present, and that FAR’s research priorities were constantly being monitored to ensure that these were being taken into account.

Current research priorities include: • Understanding and developing management strategies to minimize the risk of agrichemical resistance.

• Measuring, monitoring and managing the efficiency of inputs in cropping systems.

• Developing new crops and products to improve farm profitability.

• Providing effective tools to manage, store and report farm practices.

• Providing new solution to manage crops and increase yields.

The Strategy will help ensure cropping farmers have solutions they can integrate into their farm systems over the next five to 10 years following our referendum of growers in July this year.

“It’s frightening when you are faced with someone in a remote rural area who is most likely armed,” Rick Powdrell, Federated Farmers’ security spokesman said.

It is estimated that livestock rustling costs farming more than $120 million a year.

“Federated Farmers would like to see harsher penalties for crimes such as stock theft, including the threat of losing vehicles and equipment used in the crime as is the case with fisheries prosecutions,” Mr Powdrell said.

McKelvie said the bill had the backing of the Government and, if it passed its first reading, it would likely progress after the election.

Rustling did not just affect farmers and their families but also rural communities, he said.

Federated Farmers said the bill fitted in well with the police announcement that 177 new frontline staff would be posted around the country in the next 12 months, and 880 sworn staff over the next four years.

Federated Farmers says it is delighted to see Rangitikei MP Ian McKelvie’s Sentencing (Livestock Rustling) Amendment Bill being drawn from the ballot to go before Parliament.

Food of the Week programme.

We are one of 10 lucky schools that have healthy food (mostly fruit and vegetables) presented to them each week.

Each week’s programme has a range of activities that include watching an interactive story about the food, activities that follow up on what we have learnt by watching the story, science experiments and of course – preparing and cooking the food to eat!

the programme were seen from the very first week – the children are trying foods they have never seen before (let alone eating), they are learning about lots of different ways to prepare or eat the food, and they are encouraging their parents to buy these foods.

The programme has been fantastic as it fits in with our school learning this year based around Food! Glorious Food! – where it comes from, who and what processes it, what we do with it, how we make good food choices, what we do with the waste, and how packaging has an impact.

It’s pretty exciting to see what food we are going to be learning about each week!

This week Tinwald School welcomed Mrs Jones (above) as a sports teacher in the school.

Mrs Jones will be teaching sports skills one day a week at Tinwald. All classes will begin with

Charlotte Wood and Monson Tuilaepa and they are making pizza muffins.

The recipe includes baby spinach leaves and cheese, onion, garlic and basil/oregano – there were no scraps left!

Each class spends 30 minutes a week learning the skill and then another 30 minutes practising with their teacher.

On June 1, Tinwald School was given the opportunity to be part of the official opening of the new Countdown store.

Prior to this, every child at Tinwald had been on a tour of the supermarket.

During the visit each class was taken through the new bakery, butchery and store. Part of the visit also included icing a cupcake that had been made in the new bakery.

On the day of the opening, representatives from each class performed as part of a special performance group.

The group performed very well considering the short time they were together and were supported by parents who were fortunate to see the performance.

Young leaders in the making Mrs Gorman took eight children from Tinwald School to the National Young Leaders Day in Christchurch on May 30 – Lorraine Patterson, Bry Scott, Ashley Jenkins, Chloe Braas, Leigha Fletcher, Jesse Chapman and Jordy McGillen.

The day focused on the belief that each and every one of us is born to make a positive difference in the world.

It was a fun interactive atmosphere with exceptional, inspiring speakers, including Aaron Jackson, a NZ actor who has appeared in several movies, including Pete’s Dragon, Daniel Flynn, the co-founder of Thankyou, a social enterprise that exists to empower people to end global poverty (he also presented all the schools with two copies of a book he wrote called Chapter One).

Other speakers included Adam Gard’ner and Duane Major, brothers-in-law and initiators of the Give a Little campaign last summer to buy a beach, hair artist Matt Brown and netballer Anna Galvin.

■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Combine chillis, ginger, onion, soy sauce, water, rice wine vinegar, lemon juice, fish sauce,

sesame oil, oil, brown sugar and salt in a large bowl. Add the chicken and coat well. Pour into the clay pot (or casserole dish).

The liquid should almost cover the chicken – if not, add some water.

■ Bake for 45 minutes. Remove from the oven and lift lid to add a handful of bean sprouts before closing the lid again. These will steam but remain crunchy.

■ This is ready to serve and will

stay warm for at least 45 minutes.

■ Serve with rice and steamed green beans.

■ Tip: When removing the hot clay pot (or any ovenproof dish) from the oven, don’t put it on to a cold surface as the sudden change in temperature may crack the pot. Put it on a folded tea towel.

After welcoming members, the President, Pat Tarbotton, asked for a minutes silence in remembrance for our Patroness, Maureen McDowell who died recently. A short business meeting followed, with a reminder of the AGM on June 15 to be held at the RSA beginning with a meal at 12 noon. Our Guest Speaker was Trevor Gamblin who spoke of the History of the Butchardt Gardens in Canada, he illustrated them with a CD of the magnificent Gardens. The afternoon finished with afternoon tea.

Ashburton Indoor Bowls Catching up on some recent results, we have had the Championship Pairs event played. We had 15 teams entering this event. In the semi-finals Grant Wilson and Robyn Atkinson played Kevin and Gaylene Smith, with Wilson winning 8-6.

In the other semi Mat Bassett and Graeme Chapman played Ken and Rowena Mackenzie, with Bassett winning 12-4. In the final Wilsons team proved too strong for Bassett, coming out on top 11-6.

Also, the NZ Mixed Fours has been played. After a tough competition with several strong teams playing, the team of Grant Wilson, Graeme Chapman, Chris Talbot and Rowena Mackenzie came away winning this event. Second was the team of Simon Thomas, Michael Lawson, Julie Thomas and Taylor Mackenzie. The winning team now move on to represent our district in the zone final which is being played on July 1st in Christchurch! We wish them all the best at this event!

Several Ashburton players made the trip to the South Island Championships which was held in Nelson this year, with

pairs, triples and fours being played at this event. Best result at the Championships for Ashburton was in the fours event where the team of Grant Wilson and Mat Bassett playing together with Chris Moffitt and Alanna Preddy of South Otago came second, losing narrowly in the final 10-6.

Our attention is drawn to the Nationals this week which is in Taupo, with several players in this event. We wish them all the very best!

Ashburton Musical Club The Ashburton Musical Club’s June concert featured a wide variety of items by their own members.

The four pianists, all students, presented a varied selection, Tiffany Yang played ‘Garden Path by Elissa Milne and Elina Chester ‘Presto’ by Haydn. The Cairns’ sisters, Lacey and Shayna played respectively ‘Sonatina Op 36 No 6’ by Clementi and Valse Op 64 No 1’ by Chopin and as always they had memorised their music, no mean feat.

Peter Rumping’s renditions of ‘A Stranger in Paradise’ from the musical ‘Kismet’ (1953) and ‘Pennies from Heaven’(1936) an American popular song were warmly received by the audience, many of whom had fond memories of singing them.

A group of Southern Celtic Fiddle Orchestra players under John Waugh’s able management provided a great selection of toe tapping melodies mostly by the Northumbrian composer Roy Hugman. Among them was ‘Lake Ellesmere’ (a Slow Air) one of a group of five which Roy wrote especially for the orchestra in 2012. Their final item was a reel led by John playing his Scottish small pipes called ‘Glen Tilt’ after a hunting lodge owned by the Duke of Atholl in the Scottish Highlands where Queen Victoria was known to have stayed.

A feature of the afternoon was the Phoenix Trio from Ashburton College playing Beethoven’s String Trio No 3 in C Minor.

The girls used the afternoon’s concert as a dress rehearsal for their performance the following night in Timaru at the South Canterbury final of the NZ Secondary Schools Chamber Music contest.

Willow Diedricks played the violin, her sister Zoe the cello and the pianist was a Japanese exchange student Natsumi Endo whose skill will be missed when she returns home later this year.

It was fitting that the final performer for the afternoon was Paula Green who teaches strings at Asburton College (and the Phoenix Trio). She played four violin pieces ‘Israeli Concertino’, ‘Hora – Hatikvah’, ‘Nocturne’ and ‘Fantasie – Recitative’ which reflect the Jewish heritage of their composer George Perlman (1897 – 2000) who was born in the Ukraine but lived in the United States from the age of four and who taught the violin to within a few months of his death at the age of 103.

Members will look forward to hearing these talented performers again before too long. In the meantime the Nor’west Brass Band, from Christchurch will play for the July Concert on Sunday 9 July in an afternoon performance.

April Andrea Chambers gave a most interesting talk and slides on her tramping trip to India – amazing.

May May Sanford told of her trip outback Australia – Longreach to Cairns – Cairns to Brisbane a trip enjoyed by all.

June Meeting will be Trish Best – Vietnam Travel Club meets 3rd Wednesday of the month at St Davids Church Lounge – Allens Road at 7.30pm.

We held our annual Young Bird Classic on June 10, the first young bird classic since we lost our club president earlier this year, Roger Cornwall had been running the race for the last 30 years.

This year our birds flew from Invercargill to Ashburton aprox 388 kms, with the fastest bird arriving home in 3 hours, 42 minets and 48 seconds, it was a very fast race with the birds flying an average speed of 105 kms per hour.

We had a total of 134 birds in our 2 bird team race making 67 teams.

Ashburton Photographic Society In May we ventured out of doors for our night photography evening. We started at Baring Square East, before moving on to Baring Square West. Several members enjoyed playing in the autumn leaves and doing some light painting.

We also did some light trails, this is when we take photos of cars and trucks going past our stationary cameras. The effect is great when you get a well-lit up truck.

The Competition this month was our Set Subject of Animals and it was judged

Roger Cornwall Memorial Devon Taven 2017 Young Bird Classic

Tinwald Branch New Zealand Red Cross The branch meeting was held 6th June in the Tinwald Memorial Hall beginning with the Red Cross Principles. President Pat O’Brien gave a tribute to Maureen McDowell who died last month. Maureen was a branch member since the Branch began in 1965 and was a valued, loyal and active member. Members stood for a minutes silence.

Reports were given on the World Red Cross Day held at Rakaia, the TrustPower Volunteer Awards evening and the Red Cross Planning meeting held in Timaru. The report from the NZRC National Board was received as well as a letter of thanks and a certificate from the Ashburton Multi Cultural Trust. With the financial year ending 30 June funds were distributed to NZRC Refugee Support, NZRC Youth Preparedness Programme, and to the NZRC General Fund.

The Knitting project has over 300 pairs of knitted mittens which will be distributed to new entrants classes in schools throughout Mid Canterbury. It was reported that a recipe book ‘Taste of Cultures” has been complied and released by New Zealand Red Cross.

Each recipe is from a former Refugee who shares their recipe and their journey and are now settled in New Zealand. The books are available from the Ashburton Red Cross Shop. The Guest speaker was Kathy O’Neill NZRC Education and Training Instructor who gave many good hints on First Aid for the older person. She recommended ICE –“In Case of and Emergency” to have on our mobile phone and also the Red Cross First Aid App. She concluded by speaking briefly on a trip to Cambodia and Vietnam. Kathy was thanks by Mary Miles. The Sales table did a brisk trade, the raffle drawn and a lovely afternoon tea was served concluding another busy meeting.

Four doesn’t go into three The beauty of watching the Lions play every three days is that the All Blacks have been able to sit back and build a fat dossier of research to help guide their selections and strategies.

What they would have taken from the game against the Highlanders is the obviously brilliant performance from Waisake Naholo.

It’s not as if they could have missed it. Naholo seemed to be able to do almost anything against the Lions – beat them for pace, run over them, catch their high kicks, win turnovers and score tries.

Just as obvious was the Lions’ stress levels when Naholo was on the ball and their inability to close him down and prevent his influence being colossal.

They won’t be too keen to see him again in a black jersey. The Lions were vulnerable when faced with a powerful, direct wing which will inevitably encourage the All Blacks to consider fielding a double shot in the first test, with Naholo on the right and Julian Savea on the left.

Double the power, double the impact. Double the misery. A twin running threat from Naholo and Savea, with Ben Smith guiding them from fullback, would give the All Blacks destructive power on both flanks and the ability to strike from deep.

It will be tempting indeed to go down that selection track, signal early that they will be all about the counter attack and not care so much because the Lions will know what is coming but not necessarily be able to do much about it anyway.

But the All Blacks selectors have to be careful to not let events in Dunedin – the fastest, driest track in the world game – sway them too much.

Naholo was brilliant, yes, but the conditions for the first test at Eden Park won’t be the same.

All Blacks coach Steve Hansen will say he is no scientist but he will be aware of a few salient facts.

Hogg out of tour Lions fullback Stuart Hogg was warned that he risked losing his sight if he absorbed a further blow to his cheek injury – and has revealed he cried when told he had to go home. Scotland fullback Hogg will miss the rest of the British and Irish Lions tour after sustaining a “facial bone fracture” during Saturday’s 12-3 win over the Crusaders. Hogg collided with Conor Murray’s elbow as the Ireland halfback sought to let the Glasgow star launch a counter-attack in the first half of the Crusaders clash. Head coach Warren Gatland says they canvassed four specialists before ruling Hogg out of the rest of the New Zealand tour.

Dugan fit and firing Josh Dugan insists he is back to full fitness and is ready to bounce back for NSW after a quiet State of Origin series opener. Dugan returned at right centre in the Blues’ 28-4 win over Queensland, less than a month after fracturing his cheekbone in Australia’s mid-year Test. And while he still managed 115 metres, both he and winger Blake Ferguson were well contained as they failed to break the Maroons’ line. “I was a bit underdone,” Dugan said.

Steve Hansen is faced with a dilemma – too many good players.

He knows it has rained once or twice in Auckland and that the propensity for that to happen in mid-June is high.

Even if the dreaded monsoon season holds off arriving on the night, he knows the ball will still be wet: science can’t be defied and the pitch will cool faster than the atmospheric moisture can evaporate and dew will form.

Neither the ball nor the pitch were wet in Dunedin but they were in Christchurch where the Lions appeared to be an entirely different team not just in personnel, but in attitude, accuracy and ability.

Every time Hansen thinks of Naholo running wild, he’ll have to recall Lions halfback Conor Murray – arguably the best kicking number nine in the game – relentlessly peppering the Crusaders with a perfectly or-

chestrated and executed aerial assault.

He’ll remember how the Crusaders didn’t deal so well with it and ask himself whether Naholo could be so effective at Eden Park if Murray and no doubt Owen Farrell are driving the Lions’ indisputably good kicking game?

Would the All Blacks themselves become vulnerable if they pick Savea and Naholo in tandem – potentially leaving themselves open to an aerial bombardment they can’t quite deal with as effectively as they would like.

Naholo and Savea go okay under the high ball, but neither would list it as a key strength or weapon.

Hence, with Murray and Farrell in mind, Hansen may feel he has to bolster the back three

with an auxiliary fullback: a genuine bomb disposal expert in Israel Dagg.

He didn’t have the accuracy he was after when he played for the Crusaders against the Lions, but Dagg will be better for the experience.

He is brave and usually brilliant under the high ball and while he may not have the same finishing power as Naholo and Savea, it’s not as if he’s offering nothing on the running game front.

He has pace, agility, awareness and a big game temperament. Hansen and his selectors will have one last look at what is probably going to be the Lions test team in Rotorua against the Maori and then make up their minds about what exactly will be the right mix in their back three for that first test.

It’s cloak and daggerboards at Team NZ The development race will continue for Team New Zealand right up until the start of the America’s Cup match on Sunday.

After on Tuesday booking a re-match with Oracle Team USA in the Cup finale, it was a much quieter day at the Emirates Team New Zealand base at Bermuda’s Royal Naval Dockyard yesterday, with the crew given the day off to rest up after a draining couple of weeks.

Beyond the tented doors to the team’s boatshed it was not so serene, as the shore crew got to work preparing the New Zealand boat for its ultimate test.

50-ft catamaran has been put through a lot over the last couple of weeks, most graphically, the dramatic capsize in last week’s semifinals.

While skipper Glenn Ashby insists Aotearoa is back to “99.9 per cent” following that crash, it is understood there are still a couple of issues to tidy up and regular maintenance to be taken care of on the boat.

There are also, Ashby says, planned upgrades to be made to the boat.

Team NZ have regularly alluded to keeping a couple of things up their sleeve for a potential Cup match. These new pieces of

hardware will likely reveal itself in the next couple of days.

“We’ve got a whole host of componentry that is still arriving and coming on tap all the time.

“You never know if you’re going to make it through or not, but if you do it’s nice to know you’ve got a few things up your sleeve to put on the boat moving forward,” says Ashby.

The boat can’t be shut up in the shed for too long, however.

The crew are expected to be back training on Bermuda’s Great Sound on Thursday.

The New Zealand team not only have to stay match-fit to ensure they’re at their best to take

on the slick Oracle line-up, but they also need to be given the opportunity to test out any new equipment and ensure they’re comfortable with it.

There has been much speculation about what Team NZ could possibly be holding back for the Cup match. At this late stage all the major components are locked in, with any new development expected to be in the foil tips and rudder elevators.

It is unclear whether Team NZ plan to recommission the wingsail smashed when it bore the brunt of the impact of the pitchpole incident.

Trainer to chase Cup start Gerald Innes is making plans for a return trip to Christchurch for his in-form mare Strolling Vagabond.

“I’ve nominated her for the Winter Cup, but she’s only rated on 71 at the moment,” the Opaki trainer said.

“Last year I sent her down to Pam Robson so she’s familiar with her place and I’ll see if I can do the same.

“There’s an open mile at Oamaru on July 23 or a Rating 75 over 1400 on the same day that she can run in and if she can win there she might sneak into the Cup. I certainly think that’s the way to go with her.”

Strolling Vagabond, who placed three times on her last southern sojourn, has two wins and a last-start second behind fellow Riccarton hopeful Our Bandit at Trentham.

“She’s always had the talent, she’s just needed to strengthen up,” Innes said.

“She’s in the paddock for a week now and she has surprised me the way she has handled the mud.”

Strolling Vagabond is raced by a syndicate, which includes Innes, after she was passed in at Karaka in 2015.

Bosson’s season ends Ace jockey Opie Bosson is unlikely to ride again this season. He was stood down at Doomben on Saturday after just one ride aboard the Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards-trained Heroic Valour.

Doctors have told Bosson he was suffering a viral infection in his chest and he will now lay low for the next few weeks to recover. “I felt terrible.

It was disappointing to miss those rides but there was no way I could have ridden,” said Bosson.

Sport Proctor set to return Gold Coast forward Kevin Proctor is poised to make his NRL return from a four-match illicit drug ban. Proctor copped the suspension from the Titans – as well as a $20,000 fine – after being caught using what was believed to be cocaine in Canberra on May 5 following the Anzac test match between Australia and New Zealand. Chris McQueen said he’s chomping at the bit after spending seven weeks on the sideline. “He’d be a massive inclusion for us, the suspension’s been burning away at him I’m expecting a big game for him this week,” McQueen said.

Netballers are gearing up for an exciting night in Mid Canterbury’s premier netball competition.

In the top grade Ashburton College will be hoping to continue their fine form as they take on cellar-dwellers, Southern.

Southern will have a boost of confidence in the fact Ash Coll dropped points last week, and will be hoping to pick up their first points of the round.

Later in the evening at 7.30pm, Methven will take on Celtic in a must-win game for both sides.

If Celtic wish to keep pace with Ash Coll at the top of the

table, nothing but the full four points will be acceptable, while Methven will need a win to keep their hopes of defending their title alive.

Another team with title aspirations, United, will be taking on Hampstead, who currently sit in fifth place, as close to the bottom as they are to the top.

In the grade below, the headline clash will see undefeated Hampstead B taking on Rakaia, while Celtic B will face off against Ashburton College B. In the final match, both Southern B and Celtic C will be looking to get their first points on the board, with both sides sitting on zero.
