World’s oldest newlyweds A 103-year-old man and a 91-year-old woman have held their wedding in Britain, becoming the oldest couple to get married in the world. George Kirby and Doreen Luckie - together for 27 years - looked delighted at the weekend as they tied the knot at a hotel in the seaside town of Eastbourne, southern England, before close friends and family. The bride wore a white dress with blue flowers while the groom, a former boxer, was dressed smartly in a suit and tie, and was in a wheelchair following a recent fall. Speaking ahead of the ceremony, Luckie said the couple had “no regrets” about not doing it earlier. “We didn’t want to bother about marriage before but eventually we did it,” she said. The couple reportedly have seven children, 15 grandchildren and seven greatgrandchildren between them.

George steals birthday show It was the Queen’s official birthday in Britain, but Prince George stole the show on just his second public appearance. The toddler joined his parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, on the balcony at Buckingham Palace at the weekend to watch the traditional fly-past of aircraft. George wore a sky-blue shirt and shorts with matching shoes. He was held by William and waved to the crowd below. The one-year-old looked up at the aircraft as they roared over the Palace to conclude the pomp and pageantry of the Trooping the Colour ceremony. It was Kate’s first official engagement since the birth of Princess Charlotte six weeks ago. There was no sign of the young princess. The Queen’s actual birthday was on April 21, when she turned 89. However, her official birthday is always celebrated nationally on the second Saturday in June when the weather is usually reckoned to be more predictable.

Adams siblings gather for reunion Two of New Zealand’s biggest sporting superstars got together with their 11 siblings for a family reunion in Rotorua at the weekend. In a photo posted to Twitter, Olympic shot putter Valerie Adams and NBA basketballer Steven Adams stood alongside their brothers and sisters, lined up from shortest to tallest. Earlier in the day, two-time gold medallist Valerie wrote about the upcoming Adams family reunion, saying: “The Adams’ are about to get together. Rolf Harris song mocks victims Rolf Harris has written a song from his British jail cell mocking his victims as money-grabbing “wenches”. In a letter obtained by the Mail on Sunday, the disgraced Australian entertainer said his victims were “joining the feeding frenzy” by getting their “hooks into his dough”. He also said his life behind bars was “no hardship really”. The 85-year-old was handed a six-year jail term last year for a string of sex attacks on girls as young as seven. His letter was reportedly sent from Stafford prison, 250km north west of London, to a friend, who handed it to the newspaper. One line of the song, which Harris says he would like to set to country rock music, reads: “Perhaps you believe you’re pretty still, some perfumed sultry wench?” Other lines say: “Make him burn, get your 50-year-old hooks into his dough. “Make him burn, burn, burn. Come and join the feeding frenzy, girls.” Last month the Crown Prosecution Service was handed a “full file” of evidence about further allegations against Harris. He was unmasked as a predatory paedophile when he was found guilty of 12 indecent assaults, at London’s Southwark Crown Court last year.

Memorial walk for Collins Thousands of people filled Norths Rugby Club’s home ground in Porirua yesterday to pay tribute to ex-All Black Jerry Collins.

The gathering at the club followed a march from Waitangirua Mall about 5ks away. A large crowd, mainly dressed in Norths’ blue rugby strip, walked to the ground. Mark Conley was among the crowd and paid tribute to the former All Black. Mr Conley arrived with his wife Marina and son Nathan to show support for a “unique” character and local hero. “He [Collins] built the club up,” he said. “We struggled in the early days.” Mr Conley said the huge turnout was impressive. “He was more than a contributor to the club - he was the face of Norths.” An event organiser told the crowd people had travelled from across Greater Wellington to walk for their favourite rugby star.

“Look at all the support,” one walker said.

“It’s amazing.”

Complaint laid over treatment

Ashburton woman Kathy Jack says she was so disgusted with the treatment she received from an Ashburton GP she has laid a complaint with the Health and Disability Commissioner.

Ms Jack spent a week feeling miserable with a sore throat, but thought she was coming down with a cold. That was on Sunday.

By Friday evening she was feeling very ill and was in extreme pain.

“Around 5pm my pain was horrific. I could not move and my ear started to ache incredibly badly. My throat was getting worse, to the point I was struggling to do anything and could hardly swallow,” Ms Jack said.

On Saturday morning she went to the chemist and bought

off-the-shelf medication hoping that would help. It didn’t “The pain was getting worse and I knew I needed to see a doctor. I called my mother-inlaw to watch the children so I could go to the 6pm weekend doctor’s session.

“That wasn’t a decision I made lightly due to the high cost, however I knew I had no option,” she said.

When she was called into the surgery, Ms Jack was stunned at the treatment she received.

“The duty doctor was very rude, no hello, just what’s wrong with you. I had to talk very quietly because of my swollen throat and the pain and was rudely told to repeat what I had said.”

Her ears and her throat were checked and then she was told

she had wasted the doctor’s time.

“They said this is for urgent matters only. You should have gone to your own GP. I tried to explain that I thought the pain would pass but that it had got worse over the last 24 hours, however, they just cut me off.

“I was completely shocked at being spoken to like that and I was trying so hard not to cry,” she said.

Not only did Ms Jack not receive treatment for her throat, she was told she’d be charged an extra $20 because she “had wasted the doctor’s time”.

She was then told she had laryngitis and if it had been left much longer it would have turned to quinsy (a rare and potentially fatal form of tonsillitis).

“In my opinion, I would find this serious enough to see a weekend doctor,” Ms Jack said.

She was given a prescription for antibiotics and told to rest.

“I was very angry at how I was treated.

“I thought it was rude and completely inconsiderate. I left the building and cried. I was in shock that a doctor could treat a patient like that.”

Ms Jack’s complaint is over both her treatment by the doctor and the extra $20 she was charged.

“It’s already a huge cost to go to the weekend doctor without being ripped off; isn’t it illegal to have done this?”

She sent a letter of complaint to the Health and Disability Commissioner.

This was reviewed and she

was surprised to be told the complaint had been referred back to the doctor’s surgery.

“Initially I was concerned about that because I know of other people who have had a similar experience with the same GP, who have complained to the practice but who say that nothing was done about their mistreatment.”

She has been assured, she said, that the complaint cannot be ignored, that the surgery must respond by July 3 with an outcome.

Health and Disability commissioner Anthony Hill’s executive assistant Kerry Norman confirmed Ms Jack’s complaint had been received and had been referred to the medical practice involved for comment.

Childcare centres may be forced to raise fees

Mid Canterbury parents may have to bear the brunt as rising inflation and wages put a strain on early childhood centres.

Educators are concerned that centres may be forced to increase fees to meet growing costs, leaving parents even further out of pocket.

Tiddlywinks director Amanda Moore said strong competition in the sector meant centres had to offer competitive wages to keep staff.

That put pressure on centres that were already having to dig deeper into the coffers as more of their teachers became qualified.

Mrs Moore said the centre would probably look at further fee increases in the future, on top of the annual increases it implemented each to year to keep up with inflation.

“You do have to be aware that with so many other preschools in the area, if money is important to that teacher then you need to keep competitive,” she said.

Rising fees could have a significant impact on some families, Mrs Moore said.

Mrs Moore said it cost just under $12 per hour for two children under the age of 3 to attend the centre, which amounted to a sizeable chunk of most parents’ pay cheques.

She was so concerned about early childhood funding that she had spoken to Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew about the issue.

A spokeswoman for Ms Goodhew said

she did not comment on individual conversations with constituents.

Early Childhood Council chief executive Peter Reynolds said nobody wanted to see fees increase, but centres had to be realistic.

“Services are small businesses, whether they’re childcare centres, kindergartens, home-based services, and they need to survive,” he said.

“I don’t think there’s any parent out there that would thank a service for having to close its doors or fail.”

The sector did receive a $75m funding boost over four years in the 2015 Budget, but Mr Reynolds said that was completely used up by an expected increase in the number of children attending services.

He believed that in “real terms”, the rate per child had actually decreased.

“By our calculation, each childcare centre lost a minimum of $15,000 a year,” he said.

“That can be as much as a half or a third of a teacher’s salary.”

Mr Reynolds said he would like to see an adjustment for inflation to ensure that fees were “keeping pace”, as well as moves towards reinstating pay parity for teachers working in childcare centres compared to kindergarten teachers.

A spokesman for Education Minister Hekia Parata said the Government was committed to quality early childhood education.

The spokesman said the government had almost doubled spending on early childhood education to $1.6 billion since 2008.

Parents may have to fork out more in fees as early childhood centres try to make up funding shortfalls.

■ ELDERLY ABUSE AWARENESS WEEK

Elder abuse awareness week begins today, and is a chance to raise awareness about a serious issue that affects many elderly people all over New Zealand.

Elder abuse ‘hidden’

By Kate Spence Elder abuse in Ashburton is “absolutely hidden”, according to Lynne Gibbons, Canterbury health nurse at Age Concern Canterbury.

While the Canterbury District Health Board gets some referrals from Ashburton they are not as frequent as Christchurch and Mrs Gibbons says this is because Ashburton is lacking support systems for the elderly.

Nationwide, Age Concern reports cases of elder abuse are

increasing, however the amount of elder abuse occurring in Ashburton remains constant.

To support those who are being abused, there are 24 Age Concern Elder Abuse and Neglect Prevention Services around New Zealand and Ashburton comes under the Canterbury region.

However, there is no Ashburton representative and the closest community health nurse is in Christchurch.

“There are no practitioners in Ashburton with an MSD

contract – there’s a gap,” Mrs Gibbons says.

It is estimated that between 17,000 and 25,000 older people in New Zealand are experiencing some sort of abuse and neglect each year, many at the hands of family. Elder abuse covers a range of harms that can occur, from psychological, financial abuse, physical abuse, neglect and self-neglect.

According to the Ministry of Social Development’s 2014 positive ageing report, elder abuse is expected to increase. The

report also highlighted a need for awareness in the wider community and access to services in their local areas.

“Every year, around three to 10 per cent of older people are subject to abuse – be it physical, psychological, sexual or financial.”

Age Concern is holding its elder abuse awareness week from today until June 22. It promotes and advances welfare and interests of the elderly and today is the 10-year anniversary of the awareness day.

Sharing more than just a meal

Positive ageing will be celebrated on Sunday with a variety concert in Ashburton’s Seniors’ Centre.

The concert is being staged by Age Concern and starts at 2pm on June 21.

Workplace accident An employee at Silver Fern Farms in Fairton was hospitalised with burns after a workplace accident last Monday. A spokesman for Silver Fern Farms told the Guardian yesterday that an accident occurred while an “experienced” staff member was cleaning in a circuit room. The man suffered burns to his hands and face and was admitted to Christchurch Hospital overnight.

The spokesman said the staff member was in “good spirits”, and the company was investigating how the incident occurred.

Collins’ body home The body of Jerry Collins has arrived back in New Zealand after he died in a car crash in France more than a week ago.

Collins’ longstanding manager and family spokesman Tim Castle said the body made it back safely yesterday.

Cold snap coming

As five friends gather around a dinner table, preparing for a hearty meal of pumpkin soup and crunchy bread, you could be easily mistaken in thinking it was a special occasion.

But John Tozer, Margaret Welsh, Bob Hall and Heather Simmons are at Carol Clark’s house for their weekly catch-up.

It’s not any sort of catch-up though, the five meet as part of the Home Share programme provided by Presbyterian Support.

Ashburton was the first area in New Zealand to start up Home Share nine years ago, which was designed to minimise social isolation for the elderly.

Diane Smith is the woman behind it all, she co-ordinates the contractors who opt to have up to four of Mid Canterbury’s elderly come over to their house once a week for some good food and a good chat.

Home Share has been running for nine years now, and the feedback Mrs Smith gets is positive.

Mr Hall has taken part in the programme for over a year and said he loves the companionship.

He credits Mrs Clark for making the small group feel so at home.

“You can’t get a better woman than her,” he said.

The group often enjoy watching DVDs – kindly provided by one of the other Home Share clients, Mr Tozer, or play games.

Big Fieldays crowd Attendance at Fieldays at Mystery Creek, near Hamilton, was up by 5.2 per cent compared with the last year’s weather-affected event.

On the fourth and final day on Saturday, 30,188 visitors attended the event, which is the biggest on the New Zealand agrcultural calendar. Total attendances came to 126,063, up from 119,892 in 2014.

The event is run by New Zealand National Fieldays Society - a charitable organisation founded in 1968 to advance primary industry.

A man was seriously injured when he was pinned to a house by a car in Manurewa yesterday. The incident occurred about 2.30am, police said. The man, in his 30s, received seroius injuries. After the incident his car was driven away and police found it dumped nearby.

Skiers finally hit the slopes

Waves cause havoc in Wellington

Eager skiers hit the slopes at Mt Hutt at the weekend as the 2015 ski season finally kicked off.

Strong winds forced the official opening of the ski area to be pushed back by a day, but that didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the hundreds who headed for the mountain on Saturday.

Mt Hutt Ski Area manager James McKenzie said the ski area’s opening weekend had been successful despite low levels of snow.

“We’ve managed to get the trails looking pretty sharp,” he said.

He estimated over 1000 people had hit the slopes at the weekend, which was a quiet start for the ski season.

However he said that given the conditions, that was hardly surprising.

“I think with a combination of not brilliant snow cover off the main trails and a weather forecast that erred on the side of caution, we’ve done alright,” he said.

“It is what it is,” he said.

“We’ve got the best team that we could possibly ask for in terms of snow management

and grooming and so on, so we’ve been able to offer more than we historically would have been able to do.”

Investigation into death

Safely dispose of hot ashes

Police are ramping up efforts to find out more about the death of a man at a commercial property in Oamaru last night.

The identity of the 47-yearold man is not being released at this stage, police said.

About 15 investigators were working alongside forensic experts and ESR scientists to establish the movements and cause of death.

A scene examination was under way and police were working on recovering the dead man from the address.

He will then be transported to Christchurch for a post mortem examination.

Southern police said they were keeping an “open mind” about the cause and it was currently being investigated as unexplained.

An investigator has been appointed to liaise with the next of kin and the victim support agency has been working to assist the family, they said.

Ashburton residents are being urged to dispose of ashes safely this winter to prevent their homes and property going up in flames.

Chimney fires have been a major problem for firefighters in Timaru recently because people were neglecting to clean their chimneys. However, Ashburton Fire Risk Management Officer Murray Cairns said the main problem facing Ashburton residents

was the safe disposal of ashes.

Last week he attended a fire where a shed was burnt to the ground; the owner left what they thought were cold ashes at the back of the building but they were ignited by the wind, leaving behind a charred wreck.

“The fire was easily preventable, people just need to put their ashes in a metal bucket, that’s all,” Mr Cairns said.

Hot spots can linger for up

to five days, so ashes needed to be kept away from anything flammable before they could be safely disposed of, he said.

And although chimney fires were more frequent 20 or 30 years ago, Al from Al’s Chimney Sweeps said it was still important for chimneys to be serviced.

“It’s more efficient and then you don’t have ECan running around moaning about smoke,” he said.

Massive waves are causing havoc on Wellington’s south coast - sending boulders onto roads and causing road closures as a result.

Reports of fierce waves in Owhiro Bay, Island Bay and Lyall Bay have all been reported.

Moa Point Road, near the Wellington International Airport, was closed off yesterday due to dangerous conditions.

Julia Price, of Miramar, was driving along Lyall Parade when she decided to stop in a carpark near the edge and have a closer look.

“I was just sitting in my car after I pulled in there, just watching the waves. But then I could see a swell that looked much bigger and thought: ‘Ooh, I better reverse my car’.”

She was right. Seconds after pulling out of the carpark, a huge wave crashed over the top of the edge and onto the road where she had been parked second before.

“It just came straight over. It was incredible.”

Miss Price said there were lots of people out and about watching the action.

She said the weather conditions were fine - no wind and with a perfect blue sky - so could not understand what was causing the dramatic waves on the water.

“There are really, really high tides as well, so I don’t know what’s happening. But it’s a beautiful day here. It’s so calm - it’s just the huge swells. And I think that’s why lots of people are coming out to watch.”

A police central communications spokesman confirmed earlier reports that two people had been trapped in a vehicle on Cape Palliser Road after waves damaged part of the road. But they had since escaped and both were okay.

Lucky escape after home gutted by fire Neighbours sleeping just metres from a house that was gutted by fire yesterday say they all had a lucky escape.

Three people and a dog were believed to have escaped the house fire on Holdsworth Avenue near Wesley Primary School in Mt Roskill about 2.30am.

Little remains of the roof of the state house and the blackened insides of the home are visible through gaps in the boarded-up windows.

Neighbour Sharron Simms said she woke up to the sound of people screaming and loud popping that sounded like gunfire.

She saw the flames rising high through her window and rushed to wake her daughter and take her outside.

Her daughter has a physical disability and is “immobilised”, Ms Simms said.

“I had to run to get her out of bed and into her wheelchair and boom, straight outside.

“I had pyjamas on and bare feet...I bundled her up and got her out as fast as I could. It was well alight. If [the fire service] had been 10 minutes later or something it would have jumped straight over.”

A group of neighbours stood across the road by the school and watched the emergency response, she said.

It was hard to see her driveway from across the road through the smoke.

Ms Simms said the fire ser-

vice acted quickly and did a “marvellous job” of extinguishing the blaze.

“It gives you an appreciation for what they do everyday,” she said.

A Housing New Zealand representative was at the blaze, Mr Pasa said.

Housing New Zealand could not be reached for comment yesterday.

A fire investigator was analysing how the blaze may have started.

Climate change hits home New Zealand can expect more droughts as climate change hits home, a government minister said yesterday morning.

Tim Groser said it wasn’t clear if the current North Canterbury drought was directly linked to carbon emissions but unless humanity solved the ongoing emissions crisis, such destructive weather events were likely to intensify in the years or decades to come. “...The science is very clear

on this. The prevalence of these droughts will increase,” he told the Q&A programme on TV One. Mr Groser, the climate change issues minister, discussed the UN Climate Change Conference set for Paris later this year. He did not say what commitment New Zealand would make around cutting greenhouse gases.

European Union leaders have already pledged to cut green-

house gases at least 40 per cent by 2030. Mr Groser said New Zealand’s commitment to tackling climate change was a “cabinet decision” but he wanted a “respectable contribution” to cutting emissions in years ahead.

“The only thing that’s going to fix this is a global response,” he told TV One. Mr Groser said New Zealand supported reforming fossil fuel subsidies, was playing

an outsized role in the global response, and was “not lagging behind” other nations in addressing the issue.

Smith Gallery opens at Mt Hutt Helicopters

Methven artist Karen Smith and Mt Hutt Helicopters have developed a perfect synergy.

They are operating under the same roof in the town centre, both with a stake in the scenic values of the Mid Canterbury landscape.

Mrs Smith is an awardwinning landscape artist, who has been teaching, painting and selling her work from her home-based studio for years.

Recently she decided it was time to open a commercial studio in the town centre, so worked out an arrangement with Mt Hutt Helicopters.

As well as taking bookings for the business’s scenic flights, she has converted half of its McMillan Street office into her new Smith Gallery, which opened on June 5.

“I think it will work out quite well because I’m passionate about the landscape, so it’s not going to be hard for me to sell their product,” Mrs Smith said.

“And it’s just nice to be visible now, people can call in and see me.”

A trip to New York for the annual Down Under exhibition was initially planned for next year, but Mrs Smith has now put that on the back burner for a couple of years, as she wants

Mrs Smith usually paints in oils, onto canvas and other surfaces, including snowboards.

“Someone just said to me ‘Have you ever painted a snowboard?’. I said ‘No I haven’t, but I can always give it a go’.”

Clean-up of flood affected homes almost complete The clean-up of the most badly affected homes following the flooding in South Dunedin is expected to be completed in the next few days, the Dunedin City Council says.

Marshall loses battle Former New Zealand Law Society president John Marshall has died, age 68. The Wellington QC died surrounded by family at home yesterday morning after being diagnosed with a brain tumour 11 months ago. Mr Marshall was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the recent Queen’s Birthday honours list for his services to the law. He had retired in March as Chief Commissioner of the Transport Accident Investigation Commission after a five-year term.

Mr Marshall was a litigator who also specialised in arbitration and mediation.

remain open “as long as the community needs it there”.

“Each day we’re making an assessment. It’s becoming less and less about the acute need and more about long-term recovery.

“But it’s great for the community to have that space to go and sit down and have a cup of tea and a biscuit and just talk through their issues with someone.”

Police are searching for a man who went missing from his Mt Albert residence yesterday afternoon. He is 53-year-old Mohindar Randhawa, an Indian male of medium build who is approximately 175cm tall. Mr Randhawa went missing about 1.30pm from his homecare residence and was last seen in the area of Seaview Terrace in Mt Albert, police said. He was wearing a black jumper, black sweat pants and a pair of black slippers.

Car bursts into flames A man had a narrow escape after his car burst into flames while he was driving over the Auckland Harbour Bridge on Saturday. Police said the cause of the fire, which started just after 12pm, was probably mechanical and was not being treated as suspicious.

Helicopter rescue A man was winched 40m above a Wellington forest to get the medical treatment he needed yesterday. It took the Life Flight Westpac Rescue Helicopter crew 30 minutes to locate the man, aged in his 60s, who had suffered a heart problem while walking on the Mackenzie Track. The man was near the Butterfly Creek area of the track when emergency services were called at about 1.45pm. Crewman Julian Burn said 80 to 90 per cent of the track was covered in a thick canopy presenting a number of issues for the rescuers.

Mortgage caps make provinces attractive Sue Newman

A

t the risk of sounding smug, homeowners must be quietly smiling that they’re happily on the housing ladder rather than struggling to gain a toehold in a market that is becoming increasingly weighted against new entrants.

While first time buyers do not face as big an uphill battle in Ashburton as they do in Auckland, buying a house today is a tough call for first timers.

Incomes might have rocketed up over the past couple of decades, but they’ve been outstripped by house prices.

Add to that dramatic changes to the rules around home lending and suddenly the prospect of renting for life becomes a reality.

A requirement to have a 20 per cent deposit hurt the first home buyer market, the prospect of adding a loan to income cap could kill it.

This would cap a mortgage at a maximum of 4.5 times a buyer(s) income.

Ashburton’s median household income is around $63,000 (2013 Census), our average house price is about $325,000.

If a young couple could muster the $64,000 needed as a deposit, and their income was on or above the median, a friendly banker might lend them up to $280,000.

On paper the sums work out, but where it comes unstuck is in the expectations that many young couples have when buying first up, they’re much higher than the median priced home.

That’ll be tough for young locals but, with our prices much lower than in many parts of New Zealand the new rules, in an odd way that could play into the district’s employers’ hands.

They struggle to find the young professionals needed for the district’s growing number of highly skilled jobs.

With a bit of canny marketing, the new mortgage caps could suddenly make jobs in provincial New Zealand a lot more attractive to young Aucklanders.

The home ownership carrot and an easy lifestyle could finally outweigh their fear of living in the provinces.

$500,000 funding boost

ast week I spent two very full and busy days attending the New Zealand National Agricultural Fieldays at Hamilton in my capacity as Minister for Food Safety and Associate Minister of Primary Industries.

Fieldays are always a brilliant opportunity to hear about the latest news, innovations and challenges from across New Zealand’s agricultural industries.

It is also an opportunity to meet people from all facets of agriculture including visiting international ministers and guests and to catch up with some of my constituents attending as visitors or showcasing their businesses.

The National-led Government is focused on building a more competitive and productive economy that will enable exporters to sell more of what they produce to the world.

It is great to see at Fieldays

the scope of development, invention and progress farming businesses and those supporting them are achieving.

The Government is working towards an aspirational goal of doubling the value of our primary sector exports to $64 billion by 2025.

Exports for meat and wool are now worth more than $8 billion and are forecast to grow by 22 per cent over the next three years.

Despite the challenges of drought, other climatic challenges and lower payouts, our agricultural sector looks to be in good heart.

During the Big Breakfast

at Fieldays the Government announced a $500,000 funding boost to support mental health initiatives targeted at rural communities.

The one-off funding boost has been provided equally by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry for Primary Industries.

Those working within the agricultural sector and beyond know that rural depression is a significant issue.

Physical isolation along with uncertainties of weather and reliance on the land mean farmers and those depending on farming incomes are more at risk than those who live and work in towns and cities.

The importance of farmers and their family’s wellbeing during challenging times is recognised by this funding boost.

The 2014/15 season has been, and continues to be, a tough one for many with the ongoing drought on the east

coast of the South Island and high volatility in commodity prices.

Mid Canterbury has on the whole been more fortunate than its drought-affected neighbours in North or South Canterbury thanks to periodic rainfall and more extensive irrigation.

Improvements to the coordination of existing outreach services and the development of new support programmes and resources for those farmers and communities in great need will be helped along by the extra funding.

We know farmers are good at looking after their properties, their stock and the plant they rely on, but their own wellbeing often takes second place.

Good advice and support for farmers feeling the effects of challenging farming and climatic situations is available from organisations like the Rural Support Trusts, Farmstrong, and Dairy NZ.

Suspect dead after attack A man sprayed gunfire and planted several bombs at Dallas police headquarters in a rampage that came to a brutal end when snipers shot him dead after several terrifying hours.

Police in the Texas capital said they were “blessed” that nobody was hurt and ruled out any connection to terrorism in the one-man assault that saw gunfire echo around the darkened streets of the sprawling Texas city and left carnage in its wake.

The night of violence began around 12.30am on Saturday when a man in an armoured van rammed into police squad cars at Dallas police headquarters and opened fire.

Shots rang out from several different locations, leading police initially to believe multiple gunmen were involved, before they established the attacker was acting alone.

The mayhem came to a bloody and abrupt end in a restaurant parking lot when SWAT police fatally shot the man through the windshield of the armoured van shortly before dawn.

named but gave his name to police as James Boulware.

He fired multiple shots at the police headquarters, pausing to reload and apparently using an assault rifle and shotgun.

“We’re blessed that our officers survived this ordeal,” Dallas Police Chief David Brown said.

“There are bullet holes in squad cars where officers were sitting. There are bullet holes

in the front lobby where staff was sitting.”

He “meant to kill officers and took time to discharge that weapon multiple times to accomplish their wanting to harm our officers,” Brown added.

Shortly after, police chased the van to Hutchins, a nearby suburb south of the city, where officers surrounded the vehicle and more shots were traded.

Several bullets hit police cars but, again, no officers were injured.

Officers tried but failed to negotiate with the man, whose actions were reportedly sparked by a custody battle over his son.

A man claiming to be the man’s father, Jimmy Lee Boulware, said his son felt “beaten down” by police and Child Protective Services.

The elder Boulware, 73, also told CBS affiliate KTVT that James struggled to find and keep a good paying job due to his criminal record.

Police have not yet provided a possible motive for the attack.

“He doesn’t show to be in our databases on any terrorism watch list or anything like that,” Brown said.

“So it may have just been a rant.”

The Dallas Police Association, which represents Dallas officers, tweeted that the man had “three family violence cases against him. (He) was very disgruntled against law enforcement and the criminal justice system”.

Prince weds former model

Flag-waving Swedes have celebrated as reality show starlet Sofia Hellqvist became a reallife princess by marrying Prince Carl Philip.

A cheer erupted from the crowd outside the palace in Stockholm at the weekend when Carl Philip kissed his bride, a former glamour model, before riding in a horse and carriage through the heart of the capital.

Several hundred thousand wellwishers lined the streets.

At the televised ceremony inside the royal chapel, the prince blinked back tears as the bride was led down the aisle to the dramatic tones of Enya’s Father in Heaven.

The ceremony was witnessed by other royals including Britain’s Prince Edward, Belgium’s Queen Mathilde and Princess Takamado of Japan.

Princess Sofia, 30, a slender and elegant brunette with no royal background, is known for her infectious gap-toothed smile and easygoing ways.

Her husband, 36-year-old Carl Philip, is the second child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia and holds the title of Duke of Varmland. He is third in line to the throne.

Hillary Clinton has launched her bid to become the first woman president of the United States, unveiling a progressive platform calling for tax breaks for the struggling middle class and universal preschool care.

Dressed in an electric blue pant suit at her first major rally of her campaign, a confident and relaxed 67-year-old Clinton on Saturday outlined a vision of equal opportunity, civil rights for all and an America leading the world.

Addressing thousands of ardent supporters in New York, where she served as senator, she emphasised her four decades in public service as the most qualified candidate to lead the country.

Clinton stressed her security and foreign policy credentials, promised to build the economy, strengthen families and communities, get unaccountable money out of politics and protect the country from threats.

At the end, she was joined on stage by husband and former president Bill, their daughter Chelsea and their son-in-law Marc Mezvinsky, embracing, holding hands and waving to a rapturous sea of waving flags on Roosevelt Island.

“I may not be the youngest candidate in this race. But I will be the youngest woman president in the history of the United States,” she said to cheers and applause. “And the first grandmother as well!”

Clinton promised tax relief to small business owners, to make America the clean energy superpower of the 21st century.

She vowed to make preschool and quality child care available to every child, make college more affordable by lifting “the crushing burden” of debt, equal pay for women, raising the minimum wage and an end to discrimination

against the LGBT community.

Clinton promised to maintain America’s global leadership, to counter threats posed

by Russia, North Korea and Iran, cyberattacks and by the Islamic State extremist group in Syria and Iraq.

“America can’t succeed unless you succeed, that is why I am running for president of the United States,” she said to chants of “Hillary, Hillary.”

“Prosperity just can’t be for CEOs and hedge fund managers. Democracy can’t be just for billionaires.”

She launched a stinging attack on the Republican party, painting her conservative foes as out of touch with a diverse electorate, and lampooned their tax breaks in favour of the super wealthy at the expense of the hard-working middle class such as nurses and small-business owners.

“I am running to make the economy work for you and for every American,” she said.

In a deeply personal speech, she drew on the disadvantaged background of her mother, who was forced to work as a maid aged 14 after being abandoned, and told voters that she understood first hand their problems.

Wedding gunfire A young woman has died after being shot in the head as celebratory shots were fired at a wedding in northern France, sources close to the investigation say. According to the mayor of Marly, Fabien Thieme, the young woman was in town to attend a wedding when celebratory shots were fired from a procession of cars involved in another wedding.

Emergency services treated the woman at the scene before she was transported to hospital, but she later died. The suspect, a man in his late twenties, was detained by locals after he got out of the car. He and the 26-year-old driver of the car were arrested shortly after.

Elephant kills man A circus elephant in western Germany has run wild after escaping his tent and killed a man who was on an early morning walk. The 65-year-old victim was collecting bottles and cans in the town of Buchen at around 5.30am local time on Saturday, when the 34-year-old African elephant apparently charged at him. When he did not return from his walk at his usual time, the man’s wife went looking for him. Near the circus tents she noticed several police cars, and when she got closer saw the body of her husband. It remains unclear how the animal escaped his confines and what provoked him.

Final death toll 442 The final death toll from a cruise ship which sank on China’s Yangtze river has been confirmed as 442, state media reports, as the final bodies were found from Communist China’s worst shipping disaster. Only 12 people survived when the “Eastern Star” cruise ship capsized on June 1, Tang Guanjun, the director of the river’s navigation authority, was quoted as saying.

Boat payment claims Tony Abbott has again refused to say whether or not people smugglers were paid to turn back asylum seeker boats. “There is really only one thing to say here and that is we have stopped the boats, that’s good for Australia, it’s good for Indonesia and it’s particularly good for all of those who want to see a better world,” the prime minister said yesterday.

Labor, the Greens and Indonesia are demanding an answer to the claims that smugglers were paid thousands of dollars to turn their boats back to Indonesia.

Solo rower rescued The Japanese Coast Guard has rescued an American woman who was attempting to row solo across the Pacific. But at around 2.20pm (1520 AEST) on Saturday she sent a distress signal to a nearby freighter because of expected bad weather. She was located at about 250km off Iwaki, a city on Japan’s Pacific coast, a local coast guard official said.

Ballarat dishes it up I

t’s a Friday night in Ballarat and the streets are quiet.

That’s the first thing us city folk notice when pulling in to the ‘rat – and it was glorious.

Arriving in a place at night is always disorienting, but we find our way through the beautiful 19th century architecture to our little country nook.

The driveway is lined with native plants and Turret Cottage lies at the end, one of two on Braeside Garden Cottages’ allotment.

Inside it is like stepping into the welcoming comfort of granny’s place.

I half expected to see grandma serving tea, but luckily there were no old people in sight – which would have put a dampener on the romantic weekend getaway.

There is a pot-belly fire, spa bath and beautiful cast-iron bed – all surrounded by ornate stained-glass windows.

Breakfast is already laid out, including freshly baked scones and a loaf of crusty bread.

Need your tastebuds tickled and a restful hideaway retreat to recover from life’s stresses? Then take Christopher Talbot’s lead and head to Ballarat.

It is the kind of place that is perfect to snuggle up with a book and enjoy the silence, but with rumbling tummies we head back to town.

We find a little pizza place called The Forge, drawn in by the massive wood-fire ovens and the warm, relaxed vibe.

The staff bustle about in aprons and flat caps and it has the feel of a slightly hipster city restaurant.

It is a cavernous space but feels cosy and intimate, with exposed brick and dark wood throughout.

Their pancetta pizza is now in my top 10.

The base was lightly charred and crisp with the slight chewiness that all good pizzas should have.

Cooked at 400 degrees with thin slices of crisp potato, salty local pancetta, goats cheese and

rosemary, it is absolute pizza perfection.

We were full and could not eat another bite – until we saw the lemon meringue pizza.

Charred crunchy base, house-made lemon curd, crisp meringue and vanilla cream. It disappeared in record time.

After a night walk around the beautiful gold-rush city, we retire to Braeside for a glass of wine and some late night TV in the spa.

It does not get much better than that.

The next day our Ballarat food journey continues with lunch at Fu Man Lou, a funky dumpling bar that opened 12 months ago in a historic 1850s building.

The juicy dumplings were definitely the star and we tried the steamed pork and wok-tip chicken. There are only seven

varieties of dumpling on offer, which is small for a dumpling bar, but they are made to perfection.

The kitsch Asia-inspired interior, with neon pink accents and cute retro cartoons, has a warm modern feel that is begging to be Instagrammed.

After lunch we got lost for an hour in the Known World Bookshop, a dusty treasure trove of second-hand books and eclectic knick-knacks.

Then, as the sun set over Ballarat, we head for dinner at Catfish Thai - a restaurant so good I would drive to Ballarat just to eat here again.

It is the only Ballarat restaurant in the running for a Financial Review Top Restaurants Award, along with the likes of Melbourne’s Vue de Monde and Flower Drum.

and red with a minimalist ’80s feel. We started with minced chicken and prawns in palm sugar, peanuts and pineapple.

The perfect balance of sweet and salty with the crunch of peanut and a burst of pineapple juice.

Then the star of the night - a spicy red curry of crisp trout with wild ginger, cumin and holy basil. It was sour, sweet, salty, bitter and very spicy.

With eyes and noses watering, we pushed though the fiery sauce, unable to stop because the flavours were so unbelievably good.

But Ballarat’s vast food scene extends way beyond its restaurants. There’s fantastic coffee to be had at Yellow Espresso and a very satisfying breakfast at L’Espresso accompanied by a music-filled iPod showcasing its extensive ready-to-purchase CD collection that dominates the length of the cafe wall.

Ballarat turned out to be a surprising foodie paradise.

Chiefs ready for next rumble By daniel richardson The Chiefs have been here before.

Making the playoffs has been standard fare for the Chiefs in the Dave Rennie era and they collected championship crowns in 2012 and 2013.

The deck might be stacked against them as they juggle a huge injury toll and a trip to Dunedin to play the Highlanders on Saturday but few teams seem built to cope with adversity like the Chiefs.

They’re almost running out of loose forwards who can join the franchise on short-term contracts to cover their ailments, while few squads would have continued to thrive despite losing their first-five. Aaron Cruden watches on as his knee heals.

But despite all the curveballs that have been thrown in their direction, the Chiefs managed to grind their way to the finals this season.

The Highlanders, who won both derbies against the Chiefs in 2015, will likely start as favourites this weekend but don’t tell Rennie’s side.

“We can’t wait to get stuck in this week, have a bit of edge and head down to Dunedin and hopefully head away with a good result,” Chiefs first-five Marty McKenzie told Radio Sport yesterday.

“They’re lucky to have that indoor stadium down there so no matter what, we should

have a dry ball to play with and they’ll have a lot of support behind them.”

“We’ve got a lot of experienced players in our team and they’ve been to finals footy and won a couple of championships,” McKenzie said.

“So they’ll be the boys that we’ll be turning to this week along with the coaching staff,

just to feed off them.”

The Chiefs could have secured home advantage for their meeting with the Highlanders but they needed to produce a big win over the Hurricanes in New Plymouth Saturday night.

But the Chiefs went down 2113 to the table-topping Hurricanes who will have a bye this week before hosting a semifinal in Wellington on Saturday, June 27.

Despite having a bye, this week could still be an emotionally draining one for the Hurricanes who will attend the funeral of former loose forward Jerry Collins who died in a car accident in France recently.

The side will also have a few days off to rest up before tackling some conditioning sessions later in the week to stay sharp.

First-five Beauden Barrett missed yesterday’s victory over the Chiefs with a minor calf strain but he was expected to be fit for the semifinals.

Meanwhile, Hurricanes assistant coach John Plumtree told Radio Sport he had been approached about a coaching role with the Stormers but he had no intention of leaving his post in the capital.

“I’m happy with what I’m doing so nothing’s going to change for me,” he said.

Already considered a problem child by New Zealand Rugby, the Blues’ latest plan to solve their coaching crisis by appointing Tana Umaga could put the national body in an even more awkward position.

As revealed in the Weekend Herald, Umaga has been approached about a job at the troubled franchise, which has just finished its worst ever season – one that reaped only three victories.

He is said to be interested, but is, not surprisingly, concerned at how he fits into the equation, and in particular what role current head coach John Kirwan will have.

New Zealand Rugby will consider former All Black captain Umaga a prize asset as a coach for the work he has done at Counties and in his current role as an New Zealand under-20s assistant. They will want to keep him happy and probably privately wish that Kirwan resigns after three years at the helm to allow Umaga to take over for a fresh start.

In the old days before the private investment model, they could have effectively forced the Blues to sack Kirwan, just as they convinced the Hurricanes board to sign Mark Hammett as head coach after he stated his intention to leave the Crusaders for the Rebels. But now with Murray Bolton investing his own funds to lease a licence at the Blues, which allows him to have a say in all decisions at board level, NZR must take a much more diplomatic line. Bottom line: Bolton wants Kirwan.

Even though NZR must sign off on all coaching and playing appointments, it can’t tell the Blues what to do. It’s an awkward situation, an extension of the problems caused by a board split over Kirwan’s future.

If the board is united in wanting Umaga to join the franchise – and if chief executive Michael Redman has made him an offer it must be – then Kirwan’s future at the place could be further compromised.

The Brumbies’ 37-24 loss to the Crusaders on Saturday cost them any chance of winning the Australian conference, finishing second overall and having the week off their NSW counterparts have booked.

Methven earns historic win

Methven watched a Waihora conversion sail outside the left hand upright to win rugby’s Combined Country Cup final 3129 over Waihora in Methven on Saturday.

In a dramatic finish deep in injury time, Waihora came up with a try to fullback Bronson Munro but he couldn’t convert his own effort for Methven to become the champions.

It took a while for a smile to finally surface on the face of Methven coach Dale Palmer as the reality of the nail-biting finish settled in.

“It’s quite a big achievement in what has been one of the closest combined

competitions but at the same time a huge relief,” Palmer said.

“It was a pretty intense game where both sides produced some pretty magic footy.

“We had done all the hard work at the start but went away from our structure and Waihora came back really well.

“It’s not the way you want to win but at the end of the day it was still a final and we had taken our chances.”

Methven raced out to a 19-6 lead midway through the first half but a lopsided penalty count kept Waihora in the match as Methven were time-and-again on the receiving end of Kevin Opele’s whistle on both attack and defence.

Looking to close out the match in the closing stages, Methven had gone in the ball park of 30-plus phases inside the Waihora 22 without earning a penalty - a rugby rarity these days to go more than five 10 phases without an infringement.

Instead of closing out the match they gave up a turnover penalty that would kick-start Waihora’s eight-minute surge towards the try and shot at a draw.

The kick sailed wide and Methven, in their alternate red strips, were crowned champions.

The second half got off to an interesting start with Mudu yellow carded as Methven infringed again with Waihora on attack, only for the penalty to be overturned and Waihora’s Ryan Koning yellow carded for stomping.

The game continued to ebb and flow as both sides matched expansive play with big defence.

Waihora continued to have the sway at the breakdown and Munro added a third penalty to level the scores 15 minutes into the second half.

The home crowd found its voice and their troops rallied.

With their tails up, the Methven forwards went to work and loose forward Henry Johnstone finished things off with a try.

Wackwitz then had a turn at hitting the post for the host to hold a five-point advantage.

Waihora came back with a try of their own as they managed to stretch the Methven defence and go over in the corner. Another missed conversion from Munro kept the scores locked at 24-all.

Methven got a rare second half penalty but was out of range and they went to the lineout.

Under 16s runners-up The Celtic under 16s finished runnersup in the Combined Country under 16s competition going down to Rolleston in the final in Rolleston on Saturday.

Celtic went in as the underdogs against a previously unbeaten Rolleston and the hosts came out on top again 27-17.

Waihora won the throw but it wasn’t clean and Methven’s replacement flanker Matt Kebble won the race to the loose ball. The home side then went wide and replacement centre Ryan Ashworth ran in the go ahead try.

Wackwitz stepped up and slotted home the conversion from out wide for the crucial seven-point buffer.

From the kick-off Methven kept it in tight, marching their way downfield, phase after phase - churning up the metres and slowing eating away precious seconds as the clock wound down.

Some 35-odd phases later they were in range when the whistle finally went for the visitors, who forced the turnover penalty.

Waihora began their comeback and the longest eight minutes in Methven rugby history.

Waihora worked their way upfield - and were soon pounding away at the goal line.

With time up, Methven defended desperately and with the continual cry from Opele’s whistle a penalty try seemed imminent, only for Waihora to break through for a try.

Methven still had one hand on the tro-

phy as Munro lined up the shot - as a draw would have had the trophy shared - but the kick went west and the home side were champions. *** As Methven celebrated becoming the first Mid Canterbury team to take out the expanded combined competition – their fellow local sides all lost.

Glenmark saw off Southern 40-29 in Omihi for fifth place and Southbridge outclassed Celtic 42 -6 to finish seventh.

Oxford finished third after a default by Burnham-Dunsandel-Irwell.

Rakaia lost a third game on the trot beaten 25-28 by former champions Lincoln - which had Lincoln take out the trophy section after a 20-all draw between Saracens and Darfield.

Hampstead went down at home to Prebbleton 27-36 in the Plate section which was won by Ashley after a 34-13 win over West Melton.

The plaque went to Kaiapoi who beat Hornby 26-20, while Rolleston overcame Ohoka 19-13 in the wooden spoon clash.

Chiefs star Sonny Bill Williams has been issued with an official warning from the SANZAR citing commissioner for his crunching tackle on All Blacks teammate Conrad Smith in his side’s Super Rugby loss on Saturday night to the Hurricanes.

Williams flattened the Hurricanes’ captain in the 40th minute of the match in New Plymouth, won 21-13 by the competition’s runaway leaders. The former NRL star’s shoulder appeared to make contact with Smith’s head but, in Williams’ defence, he used his arms in the tackle and there seemed to be no hint of a shoulder charge.

A warning may be issued by the commissioner for foul play incidents that are very close to, but in his opinion, do not meet the red-card threshold for citings.

On further review of the match footage, the commissioner deemed a warning was appropriate.

Titans jump into top eight Gold Coast have jumped into the NRL top eight after beating Canterbury 28-14 in a thriller yesterday at cBus Super Stadium.

After a first-half arm wrestle, the Titans dazzled their home crowd of 10,645 with a stretch of three unanswered tries to run away with the game to book their second straight win. Canberra-bound pivot Aidan Sezer had a huge hand in the result, continuing what must feel like an excruciating farewell season on the tourist strip for Titans fans. Not only did he kickstart their surge with a brilliant 40-20 just before the half-time buzzer that resulted in a try to Kevin Gordon, he helped set up their next four-pointer and converted four of five attempts in a tireless performance.

Brazil progress on penalties Brazil have progressed to the semifinal of the Fifa U20 World Cup after beating Portugal 3-1 on penalties yesterday in Hamilton.

After 120 minutes of goalless action, Brazil were the coolest from the penalty spot as Portugal scored their first, then missed their next three kicks.

Lucao missed Brazil’s second, but goals from Andreas Pereira, Danilo and Gabriel were enough to see the South American side progress to a semi-final against Senegal, who beat Uzbekistan 1-0.

It will be a long flight home for Portuguese substitute Raphael Guzzo who missed Portugal’s second penalty by trying a cheeky ‘Panenka’ style penalty, where he softly chipped the ball straight down the middle, but couldn’t fool the Brazilian goalkeeper who stood still and easily caught the ball.

Nearly 10,000 fans packed into Waikato Stadium to watch two of the tournaments best attacking sides, but both sides were let down by some careless finishing.

Portugal had the best chance to win the match in extra time when Nuno Santos was sent clear through on goal, but watched on in frustration as his shot edged agonisingly wide.

Brazil have progressed despite not scoring a goal from open play in over 240 minutes, but have earned their spot in the semi due to an iron-clad defence which hasn’t conceded a goal in over five hours of World Cup play.

Meanwhile Senegal’s dream run continues, after beating Uzbekistan 1-0 at Wellington.

Senegal came through pool play as one of the four best third-placed teams before they edged Ukraine in a penalty shoot-out in the round of 16.

Mali stun Germany in shoot-out win Highly fancied Germany have been knocked out of the FIFA under-20 World Cup by Mali in very un-German circumstances - losing a penalty shoot-out.

Niklas Stark missed the crucial fifth penalty attempt for Germany to see the Africans win 4-3 on penalties and advance to the semifinals where they will face Serbia.

The match went into extratime after finishing locked up 1-1 after 90 minutes. Germany, who went into the clash having netted 17 goals in four matches,

Mid Canterbury sides dominate

Wakanui Black ended Tainui’s unbeaten run in empathic fashion in the Mid-South Canterbury men’s hockey competition on Saturday.

The three-time defending champions handed the previously unbeaten Tainui a 6-0 lesson in Timaru, showing it will take plenty to dethrone them.

“Tainui were missing a few

key players but the way we played I don’t think it would have mattered,” Wakanui Black’s Adam Wilson said.

“We were able to implement the game plan almost exactly how we had talked about for two strong halves.”

Three goals in each half had them collect a bonus point win to close the gap at the top of table to two points, mid-way through the second of three rounds.

Sam Bennett scored twice from penalty corners to go with goals from Daniel Lovett, Toby Thomas, Aidan Mitchell and Wilson.

Wakanui Blue also put six goals in the back of the Timaru Boys’ goal before conceding a late goal in a 6-1 win.

Paul Everest got things going from a penalty corner before Hayden Sinclair chalked up a first half hattrick for Blue to be up 4-0 at the break.

Sinclair scored a fourth in the second half and Andrew Moore’s goal made it 6-0 before Timaru Boys’ came up with a consolation goal.

In the women’s competition, defending champions Hampstead also made a statement with a 4-0 win over Cambridge in what was their first away game of the season.

After seven rounds, Hampstead are unbeaten with five wins and two draws to sit four-

points clear of Cambridge.

Hampstead-Collegians continued their strong run - with a 1-1 draw with Geraldine.

After conceding a goal in the first half, Jaimee Smith scored the equaliser for the side’s second straight 1-1 draw.

Their two draws and two wins in their last four matches has Hampstead-Collegians on track to eclipse their record of three wins and four draws last year.

Changes planned for 50-over format Enjoy eight-runs-an-over oneday international cricket while it lasts.

New Zealand and England have produced consecutive matches with totals hovering around that rate, but they could soon be a rarity again. The 50over format will be recalibrated by the end of the month when the International Cricket Council’s chief executives committee

meets in Barbados at the organisation’s annual conference.

Recommendations by the ICC’s Cricket Committee are expected to be ratified and implemented within a few months.

The ODI suggestions include: - Removing the batting powerplay - Allowing five fielders outside the 30m circle between the 41st and 50th overs

- Removing the need for two fielders to be in catching positions in the first 10 overs.

The upshot is for two fielders to be allowed outside the circle in the first 10 overs, that increases to four for the next 30 overs, and five for the last 10 overs.

The move should give captains more scope to cover the field, provided their bowlers

comply with tactics.

No changes are expected on the increased size of bats, the shrinking of boundaries and the durability of the white ball.

Ross Taylor, who scored 119 off 96 balls to earn man-of-thematch as part of New Zealand’s 398 for five against England on Saturday, said the new rules would make bowling easier.

Joseph Parker’s next opponent will be Japanese champion and former professional kickboxer Kyotaro Fujimoto.

Parker will fight the 28-yearold Fujimoto in Invercargill on August 1 following his demolition of German champion Yakup Saglam in Palmerston North on Saturday.

It is a bout that promoter Dean Lonergan believes will open up a pathway to a title fight against American Deontay Wilder, the WBC heavyweight champion.

Parker, who is ranked eighth on the WBO and 10th on the WBA ratings, has the potential to go 13th on the WBC ladder if he beats Fujimoto, who is ranked 15th by the organisation.

He is then eligible to fight Wilder, who has won 33 of his 34 fights by knockout, although the 29-year-old known as the “Bronze Bomber” is unlikely to want to quickly put his title at stake against a rising force in Parker.

“Out of the current champions of the four organisations, Wladimir Klitschko, Ruslan Chagaev and Deontay Wilder, Wilder is probably recognised as the weakest of the three,” Lonergan said. “That’s what makes the Fujimoto fight so valuable to us _ a victory over him will put Joseph on course to fight Wilder and that’s why I’ve been chasing [Fujimoto] for over a year.”

Parker extended his undefeated professional record to 14 victories when stopping Saglam early in the second round in front of a noisy crowd of 3000 at Arena Manawatu. It was Saglam’s fourth defeat in 38 fights.

Warriors still on NRL track

By DaviD Skipwith Inexperience is hurting the Warriors but coach Andrew McFadden believes his side is heading in the right direction, despite Saturday’s heart-breaking last-minute 25-21 defeat to the Sydney Roosters.

After scraping home in three consecutive wins over sides ranked in the lower half of the NRL ladder, the Warriors have fallen short in their last two games against genuine premiership contenders, with both the Rabbitohs and Roosters exposing some glaring deficiencies in their play.

The Warriors dominated the opening 40 minutes and extended their lead to 20-6 in the early stages of the secondhalf, but, in what has been a trend this season, they failed to land the knock-out blow and lost their way badly in the final half hour as the Roosters roared to life.

McFadden was pleased with the effort but conceded his youthful side - featuring six players with no more than 12 NRL games to their names while missing State of Origin representatives Ryan Hoffman and Jacob Lillyman - were found wanting at key stages.

“Some of it comes down to a bit of inexperience in certain positions so that’s something we’ll have to work on,” said McFadden.

“They probably had more experience than us out there so it is a learning curve for us at the moment and we’re learning the hard way but I’ve still got a lot of faith in this group.”

The disturbed southwest flow over New Zealand dies away tomorrow as a ridge builds over the country.

The ridge recedes to the North Island on Wednesday as a trough approaches Fiordland, preceded by strengthening northwesterlies. The ridge moves away to the northeast on Thursday and Friday.

New faces in Hammers squad

Southern and Methven players dominate the initial Mid Canterbury rugby squad.

Hammers new head coach Grant Keenan unveiled his preseason squad of 33 that will begin preparing for the Ranfurly Shield challenge against Hawke’s Bay next month.

The squad will start training this week and play warm up games against Ellesmere on June 30 and the Otago Sassenachs on July 14 before a final squad will be named to take on Hawke’s Bay in Napier on July 23.

Southern has supplied 13

players while the Combined Country Cup champions Methven had nine players named.

There were four from Celtic and Rakaia and three from Hampstead. Loan players and a player of origin will be announced at a later date.

There is an injection of new talent to the Hammers squad, particularly in the front row ranks.

Props Filipo Siakai, Villie Finau and hooker Penisimai Fakatoka are potential new caps, as is Southern prop Adam Williamson who impressed Keenan in the New Zealand Under 19 Heartland XV last year.

Big lock Maikeli Mudu slots into a crowded middle row roster while a new recruit, Tyler Koning, could play a big role.

“Tyler’s a big strong lad who can play seven or six and will add a lot to our environment,” Keenan said.

In the backs, the new recuits come in the form of Methven’s midfield combination of Andy Hamilton and Fa’aitu Tuamoheloa and Celtic’s Christian Vainerere.

“The midfield pairing of Andy and Fa’aitu has been by-andlarge the best in the combined competition and deserve to be there and Christian is a player

of the future.”

Keenan also has the luxury of recalling some former Hammers, with lock Adam Ross, prop James McLeod and midfield backs Ewen Scott, Gideon Lambrechts all playing for Mid Canterbury in recent seasons.

The team begins training on Wednesday and have just over a month to prepare for the Shield Challenge.

Keenan will select a Heartland squad following the Watters Cup final, a week after the Shield challenge, as the Hammers chase a third straight Meads Cup title in the Heartland Championship.
