The ski area access road opened at 12.15pm with just one lane, and only four-wheel-drives with chains were allowed. Limited lifts of the magic carpet and quad chair opened initially, while the Summit Six was able to open later in the afternoon. Management are expecting huge crowds today and have asked skiers to expect delays on the road.

A land deal between the Methodist Church and the Ashburton District Council could see restoration work under way on the historic Baring Square Church before the end of this year. Church property committee chairman Ken Leadley said that since district councillors agreed to build the district’s new civic centre and library on land owned by the church, the restoration project had gained momentum. This work will be part financed through the land deal. There had been meetings with the parish council, the restoration committee and decisions

were being made on the first architectural draft for the reconfiguration of the church, Leadley said. While the interior of the church was unlikely to undergo significant change, the project would include elements that would ensure the church was not only strengthened but that it would meet the needs of the community today and into the future, he said. The council has agreed to buy two sections owned by the church. These include land currently occupied by the church hall. This will be demolished, but the church will retain ownership of a strip of land alongside the

church to provide access to new meeting rooms and community facilities. Prior to the council decision, the church property committee had engaged Timaru’s Rushton Architects for the restoration project. “One of the drivers for this was that John Rushton was part of a synod property committee, and he is a minister’s son so he understands church stuff,” Leadley said. He suggested the restoration project could be under way within four months. “We’re making serious progress, there’s still a long way to go but we hope to have a plan

for the reconfiguration in two to three weeks.” The church is currently negotiating with the council over the sale of land and Leadley said he was pleased with the progress being made. “They’re being hugely proactive, they’ve been extremely helpful; there’s a nice relationship going on. There’s positive synergy and that’s great for both parties.” The civic centre and library project will also see the old County Council buildings in Baring Square demolished and the council will also need to buy privately owned land to the east of this building on Havelock Street.

Australian Greens senator Scott Ludlam is leaving federal parliament after finding out he was improperly elected more than a decade ago. The party’s co-deputy leader said it was recently brought to his attention that he holds dual citizenship of Australia and New Zealand. Under section 44 of the constitution, that makes him ineligible to hold elected office. “This was my error, something I should have checked when I first nominated for preselection in 2006.” - NZME

Jet blast victim named The New Zealand victim of a jet blast in the Caribbean has been named. Gayleen McEwan, 57, of Blenheim, died after hitting her head when she was knocked over by the blast of a jetliner taking off at St Maarten while enjoying a holiday with her husband and two Kiwi friends. Sister-in-law Janice McEwan said the family in Marlborough were still in shock. “We’re just trying to take it in and gathering from different places. That’s all we can do. Crash witnesses sought Police are calling for witnesses to the fatal crash between a car and a bus in Mt Eden this week. Waitemata police acting Sergeant Colin Nuttall said the investigation into the cause of the crash was ongoing and police wanted to speak to anyone who saw the crash or witnessed the vehicles in the lead up to the crash. Police were particularly interested in hearing from the driver of a blue BMW vehicle who witnessed the crash, he said. - NZME

Closed roads keep truckies in yard By Sue NewmaN

On a normal working day transport company boss Jim Crouchley counts the success of his business in red dots moving on a map; today he’s looking at a map where those dots are almost static. Like many freight companies, Rural Transport’s business is hard-hit whenever there’s a snow storm, if alpine passes close then their trucks are left stranded, either at home base or at any of a dozen points around the South Island. While the Ashburton District escaped relatively unscathed from this week’s big chill, Crouchley is looking at a yard full of trucks, some loaded and ready to roll at a moment’s notice. And he’s looking at two of his staff who are likely to spend another night away from home. It’s been like that since the first of the bad weather hit on Wednesday night. Since then Crouchley’s been running his day by text alerts from the New Zealand Transport Agency. “It’s been very on and off with the passes and the delays are pretty frustrating but we just have to suck it up, there’s nothing we can do,” he said. Yes, road closures add costs but Crouchley doesn’t pass those on. Delays, extra accommodation, they’re just part of the deal when you’re in the transport game, he said. He admits he doesn’t like looking out his office window and seeing a dozen or more trucks lined up in a yard that’s normally almost empty. Mid-morning yesterday he was tracking two truckies returning from Nelson and Blenheim. At that point he anticipated neither

would be able to make the trip home by nightfall. And that’s two more nights’ accommodation. Long-haul driver Scott Young has spent the past three days hanging around the yard, doing odd-jobs and waiting for the nod to head to Hokitika with a truck and trailer load of baleage. Arthurs Pass has been closed and planned to take the long route via

the Lewis. A truck crash closed that road, taking this option off the table. Young’s an old hand at sitting out closed roads. He’s been caught before with a closed road ahead and behind and says he’s always well prepared for a long wait in the cab. “I’ve spent many an hour on the Lewis Pass in the snow just

waiting. All the guys carry a clean pair of undies in the truck – just in case and we always take food and plenty of water,” he said. Like most long-haul trips, Young’s baleage delivery to Hokitika is just part of a transport chain. When he off-loads on the coast he’ll overnight and then pick up a load of railway sleepers that will be part of his next trip, a

delivery of goods to Queenstown. And that trip brings into play the southern passes and more potential delays. “It’s all just part of the job, you expect that in winter. I’ve been doing this for so long you just get used to the snow,” he said. The weather waiting game can also mean a juggling act for truckies with driving hours, Young said.

Call for vandals to front up after grounds damaged By ColiN williSCroft

The Methven Rugby Club is appealing for whoever took a vehicle for the spin on one of the club’s grounds on Wednesday night to own up to the damage

they caused. Club secretary John Fulton said the club had a description and footage of the vehicle concerned, which it was considering passing on to police, but he would rather those responsible came forward voluntarily. The

club had set a deadline, but had decided to extend that. He also called on members of the public who had information about the vandalism to pass it to the club. Photos on the club’s Facebook page show a number of doughnuts

in snow on the club’s grounds, along with a photo of vehicles that may have been involved and comments from the public on what punishment the culprits should face if they are found. However, despite the damage

being disappointing, it could have been worse, Fulton said. “We’re a bit lucky that it was on top of snow, so there’s not too much mess. But it’s something we could have done without. It’s pretty annoying.”

This week’s snowstorm was a “walk in the park” compared to some of the bigger ones of previous years, says Methven farmer Viv Barrett. He was the subject of a planned search and rescue party in the storm of 1973, the biggest in Canterbury and North Otago since 1945. It all began one morning, August 5, after it had been a warm evening the night before. He woke at his property on the outskirts of Methven to about 30 centimetres of snow on the ground, and it was still snowing heavily. “The flakes were as big as my hand. You could just about see the snow rising, I have never seen snow gather up so quick,” Barrett said. Around 7am he mentioned to wife Marion, who was still half asleep, that he was going to his brother Barry’s house on a neighbouring farm about five kilometres down the road. He wanted to help him feed stock and also bring Barry and his wife Joan and their two young children back to his house, knowing the power could fail and they did not have a log-burner. But on the way home the group became stranded when their two-wheel-drive tractor towing a Land Rover became stuck. “We just had to leave them in the middle of the road,” Barrett

said. With Barry carrying one child and Viv carrying the other, the group waded through snow reaching up to their waists the remainder of the way home. They made it back by about 1.30pm, by which time Marion had contacted Methven Search and Rescue. Searchers had been just about to send out a party. The telephone lines failed shortly afterwards and the two families could not get outside again for about three days, but were able to keep warm and well fed. Power was off for about six weeks. Feeding out to stock was impossible at first, and once a bulldozer was on the scene they cut through fences to reach surviving sheep. NIWA records show the 1973 storm was August 5 to 7, and 61 centimetres fell in Methven, 180 centimetres at Mt Hutt, and snow was up to 1.22 metres deep over the Canterbury Plains above Ashburton. Roads closed, livestock losses were in the thousands, and there was widespread damage to power and telephone lines. The damage to farm buildings due to snow loading cost $200,000, which would be equivalent to more than $2 million today, to repair. Mid Canterbury grandmother Judy Skevington was a teenager in that snowstorm and remembers travelling up to the Springburn family farm a few days

afterwards to get coal to her parents. She and her brother were in a Mini and managed to get there from Ashburton by following an army truck they came across. “We bellied the Mini (in the snow), but at least we were home,” she said of their eventual arrival. “The snow drifts were far taller than me, they were humungous

along the roads,” she said. Skevington is not a fan of snowstorms, and is happy to be living away from the hills, near Lake Hood. She did not consequently have to worry about other large ones over the years, such as the big snow of 1992. However, it was not far enough east to avoid the 2006 snowstorm. It happened on June 12, covering Mid Canterbury and

bringing Ashburton to a standstill. Both Methven and Ashburton lost power, and some farms were without electricity for up to three weeks. Skevington tried to rescue trees in her garden from the weight of the snow, but then heard a large branch break near her. “You are better off leaving the garden until it’s safer,” she said.

An Ashburton building company that spans about 80 years and four generations has scored a major success in this year’s Mid and South Canterbury Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition. McIntosh Building Ltd took out the gold award for an Ashburton house in the competition’s $1 million-to-$2 million home build category and scooped the pool, winning four out of five lifestyle awards. The award ceremony was held in Timaru last night, with winners announced at a gala dinner. The competition is now in its 27th year. As well as winning gold for a home in the $1 million-to-$2 million category, McIntosh Building Ltd won a silver award for a Rakaia home in the $700,000 to $1 million category. In the lifestyle section the company won the Heart of the Home Kitchen award, Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence award, Outdoor Living award and the Latitude magazine Interior Design award. Another Ashburton building company, Cartney Construction, won bronze in the builder’s own home category. The evening’s supreme award went to Timaru’s Dimension Building Ltd. The nine local gold award winners become national gold reserve finalists and will be re-judged against other gold award winners from around New Zealand to find the overall national winners. Those winners will then compete for the Registered Master Builders Supreme Awards for House of the Year and Renovation of the Year in November. The McIntosh men have a tradition of sons following fathers in the building trade – Alan, Colin, Alistair and John who now specialise in commercial construction. Third generation builder Alastair founded today’s company, McIntosh Builders Ltd, in 1996 and laid the foundations for a company that prided itself on taking up every opportunity that came its way.

Brothers, 101, 83, reunite 35 years on Two brothers, separated since their mother’s death in 1982, have reunited in a heartwarming and emotional meeting. Ben and Joe Oakes, 101 and 83 years old respectively, had both assumed the other had died after not seeing or hearing from one another for 35 years. When Joe saw his brother on a TV show about centenarians a few weeks ago, his jaw hit the floor. It was, unmistakably, his older brother. “There he was talking [on TV]. On the screen it said ‘Ben Oakes’, and I said, ‘Good God, that’s my brother. I thought he was dead!’” A family friend helped Joe, who lives in Auckland, find Ben’s phone number in Nelson. “I rang and I said, ‘It’s Joey’. ‘Joey who?’ He said. ‘Joey, your little brother!’ “It was the most amazing thing. Absolutely unbelievable. Something I never thought would happen.” The TV appearance was about Renee Hollis’ upcoming book about New Zealand centenarians. She said she never would have believed her project, during which she has travelled the country to interview more than 100 people, could have caused such a special meeting between long-lost brothers.

35 years ago. He’s still got his hair, he’s still got his teeth, and he’s still got his sense of humour. “We spent a lot of time at the nursing home. We talked and talked and talked.” Ben and Joe’s parents were from Ireland and the pair’s oldest brother Arthur, as well as Ben, were born there before the family moved to Liverpool, England. The young family then moved to Dunedin in 1922, and their

third and fourth children Sally and Georgina were born, followed by their youngest, Joe. The couple divorced when Ben was 17 by which time he had moved to Christchurch and he moved his four siblings up to be with him. Arthur died in 2014, aged 99. Sally died around five years ago, and their sister Georgina lives in Wellington. Ben shared his colourful life with Hollis for the book, telling stories from his time as a soldier in World War Two. In 1941, he played rugby for the Army in Cairo in front of 50,000 troops. He married first wife Esther, aged 21, who he met after saving her handbag from a group of men trying to steal it from her. They had two daughters, Susan and Loretta, before she died in his arms in Christchurch. “They were going to arrest me because I wouldn’t let them take her from me,” Ben said. “There were over 1000 people at her funeral.” Ben later remarried, but his second wife has since died too. Ben told of his abusive father – an alcoholic scarred by World War One – and loving mother. “I have never known a peaceful time in my life. I’ve seen so much

horror since I was a kid. There has never been anything else but that. It’s very hard. You can’t stand to the side of it. My mind goes into it, which stops me from sleeping. I don’t sleep much.” He joked: “I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw my daughter with a man who turned out to be German. “When I heard him speak and realised where he was from I wanted to kill him. I lunged at him and my daughter started screaming not to hurt him. Over time I slowly accepted him. “My thinking was wrong and I had to learn to understand him. We ended up becoming friends and he married my daughter. I even helped him on building sites.” Joe said his professional life covered everything under the sun – except, his wife said, cooking. Joe said: “[Ben] believes he’s going to go soon.” Through tears, Joe told him, “No you can’t. You must hang on, because I’m coming back again, and I’ll see you again, and this time I’ll bring presents. “It’s the most incredible thing that’s ever happened to me in my life. We now have the opportunity to be a part of each other’s life again, which I didn’t think would ever happen.” - NZME

ack is a forty-something-yearold from Ashburton. He’s been around the traps. Knows a thing or two. And was a bit of a fan of a nibble on the nags. And the dogs for that matter. He wasn’t what you would have called an excessive, problem, gambler. At least initially. But he did love to have a bet. And, he bet a lot. And then in one two-week spell it all went wrong. In his own words, it’s borne from a life of spending a good portion of his childhood sitting outside a pub or TAB while his father spent his time inside backing “hopeless” chances at galloping meetings from Winton to the depths of Orange in Australia and trotters that the driver could hop out of the sulky and run faster than. “He was a hopeless punter,” Jack said. “It’s probably a good thing I don’t speak to him any more actually. In some ways I blame him for what I ended up becoming. “And I know that sounds ridiculous, but I grew up knowing nothing better.” Jack and his sisters would spend hours sitting in the old family car while their father tried to win back what he had already lost. “If he had a win he’d bring us out something to eat and drink, and if he didn’t bring us anything we knew not to say a word on the way home because it usually meant he hadn’t won a dime.” The trio of car-sitters would pass the time by engaging in their own form of gambling. Potato chips were the currency and the subject was often what colour the next car to drive past them was going to be, which in hindsight, according to Jack really set the wheels in motion. As time progressed and he grew older, Jack would be allowed inside

Pokies, horses, sports, cards or dice. Take your pick. The options available to you are endless. At any given time, in almost any given place you can gamble money. And it’s a growing issue around the country as more and more people fall into debt through excessive gambling. Here’s the story of one local who fell into a vicious cycle. And for the good part of it was successful. Until it all went pear-shaped in a fortnight. He spoke to Matt Markham. His name is changed to protect his identity. the pub or TAB with his old man. An experience he said made him feel far beyond his actual age. “Here I was at say 15, sitting in the pub or TAB with him and I’d be picking out horses for him and his mates. “I loved it, I felt older, more responsible. Ahead of my time I guess.” You’ll often hear of people’s first gambling experience being a winning one. That casual fiver slipped through the tote window and returning a large multiple of its former self. Jack’s tale of his first ever bet wasn’t one of those moments. “I’d been mowing lawns for someone and had $5. So, I did a whole heap of homework and asked Dad to back it for me thinking I was the best thing since sliced bread. “It ran down the track, in fact it’s probably still running to be honest, it went that horribly.” That should have been it for Jack, but he lined up again the next week, five bucks in hand and again asked his father to back a selected horse. “The next week I backed a winner. I think it paid about $12 and I had $5 to win on it so I was a pretty rich young kid. “And from there I never really looked back. Every week I’d line up and have a crack, some weeks I would win and then other weeks

I wouldn’t. Back then I just sort of rolled with the punches and took it from week-to-week.” By his own admission, Jack never fully started gambling until he turned of legal age to punt away from the restrictions and watchful eye of his father. “I’d spend all my spare time studying form and sitting down at the TAB or pub watching and betting. “I’d win and punt bigger and if I lost, I’d punt smaller to try and build myself up a bit of kitty. “It became a bit of a cycle for me, I’d walk in with $100 in my hand and have my first crack with half of it to try and get the ball rolling. Sometimes I’d get up to around $2000 and start playing it big, like bets of $400 at a time and more often than not it would be gone within half an hour because I would chase the big bucks even more. “And this is when I was about 21. I didn’t care. I just wanted to win.” By the time he turned 30, Jack was going reasonably big on the punt. But he’d restricted himself just to the weekend racing action. Friday to Sunday – that was his holy time. Without care or responsibilities as a bachelor with a good paying job, he could invest anywhere from $2000 to $5000 in two and a half days. “I was never smart about it. Not for a long time anyway. I’d bet, I’d win and I’d blow it. “There was no method other than the ruthless one in my eyes. If I spent $2000 over a weekend I wouldn’t even blink an eye for a long time, it just seemed inconsequential to me.” Things continued along the same windy and turning path for another half of a decade before Jack hit rock bottom for the first time. He’d had a couple of big collects. And by big we mean in the tens of thousands of dollars through taking exotic bets like trifectas. He brought himself a new car with one lot of his winnings. Put down a deposit on a house with the other. Life was good for a long time. He was on a roll, winning frequently and becoming quite the successful punter.

He found himself a partner. That curbed the enthusiasm ever so slightly, but not for long and soon into the relationship he found himself making excuses to head down to the TAB for an hour or two. “I was pretty good there for probably six months, I think at one stage I went three weeks without a bet. “We were in the honeymoon stage of the relationship at that

point and it was all about the fun so I never really even gave betting a second thought. “But after a while the itch came back. And I’d sneak off down to the TAB or load up the account with a bit of money and have a go.” One weekend things went particularly bad. Jack blew $2500 on the Friday night, $5000 on the Saturday and then another $5000 on the Sunday afternoon. “I think it was the biggest weekend of spending I did out of my bank account. “I’d spent more in a weekend a lot of times, but it was always with money I’d won from the very same place. “So, I never really noticed it not being there when Monday rolled around.” Instead of cutting his losses and walking away, Jack went back the next weekend. Determined. He was getting back what he’d

lost the previous week and if he had to spend a bit to do it, that’s exactly what he was going to do. Monday rolled around and Jack was out of pocket to the tune of $20,000. Plus, the $12,500 from the week before. “For the first time ever, I didn’t know how I was going to pay my bills. “So, I did what I thought I knew best and took a little bit more out and tried to win with that. “I lost it too. “All of a sudden I felt sick, and embarrassed. I didn’t really know what to do or who to talk to.” He turned to an old family friend for advice and within 24 hours he was in his first counselling session with a local advice group who he said were fantastic. “They didn’t judge me, they listened and sympathised and helped me to put plans in place to sort things out. “But that wasn’t the hardest part.

There was one relapse, thankfully only to a very small extent. And other than he hasn’t had a bet for the past four-and-a-half years.

“I look back on it all and wonder what the hell I was doing. “With the job that I had and the money I was getting for it I could have been living a really good life by now. “Instead I’ve had to start again and build myself back up.” He’s not big on the advice giving, because he knows himself how hard it can be to listen to, especially if you are living in a bit of self-guilt. “If you think you have a problem, then you most likely do have a problem. “I’d find myself lying awake some nights dreaming about my next big win. Now, to me, that was a sure sign I had a problem. “Find someone to talk to about it and start taking the right steps. “It will be the best thing you ever do and the satisfaction of beating the urge to gamble is even better than the thrill of winning on the punt itself.”

For a lot of gamblers it doesn’t really matter what they gamble on, as long as they can get their ‘fix’.

$1.2m in shares forfeited Graham Darlow, who left his role as head of the Fletcher Building’s construction division after it reported unexpectedly weak earnings this year, forfeited about $1.2 million of shares when he didn’t meet financial targets. Darlow (right) forfeited 177,745 shares, retaining only 34,791 shares, according to a notice on the stock exchange. A company spokeswoman said the disclosure relates to shares he held under the company’s long-term incentive scheme and which he became beneficially entitled to under the terms of that scheme upon leaving the company. However, the shares were forfeited, as the financial targets associated with the longterm incentive scheme weren’t met, she said. Fletcher began a review of the construction division last November and its shares began dropping in late February when the unit unexpectedly posted weak first-half

earnings because of some problematic projects. The stock took a second dive less than a month later when Fletcher cut its annual earnings guidance, largely because of issues with complex major building projects, wiping around $1.52 billion from the value of the country’s biggest building firm. The building company cut group full-year profit guidance by $110m and said it expects operating earnings before interest, tax, and significant items to be between $610m and $650m in the year ending June 30. When it lowered the guidance it also announced Darlow would retire at the end of the financial year, naming Michele Kernahan as chief executive of its troubled construction division, effective immediately. Darlow’s departure ended a 29-year career with Fletcher. He joined the company in 1988 and has managed the construction division since November 2011. - NZME

Cake maker’s contract cancelled A contract awarded to a Waiuku cake maker to build a major sewage plant on the West Coast has been cancelled and the manager who oversaw the deal has resigned. Westland District Council said yesterday that both it and the company contracted to build a major sewage plant in Franz Josef had agreed to cancel the deal. That company, Techno Economic Services NZ (TES NZ), was awarded the contract after flooding destroyed the town’s sewage ponds. TES NZ had no previous experience in waste management or construction and its director and

shareholder, Neha Bubna, is the sole director of cake making company Cake Culture, based in Waiuku, south of Auckland. However, the council said that the company’s parent company, TES India, was comprised of a group of specialist environmental engineers and consultants with international expertise in industrial effluent, sewage and water treatment plants. “Work on the Kumara and Whataroa water supply upgrades was to be carried out by consultants from TES India, in conjunction with New Zealand contractors,” the council statement said.

The tender for the project was overseen by a manager who was stood down after a Serious Fraud Office (SFO) investigation was launched into the matter. A council spokeswoman confirmed the man had resigned within the past few weeks. The project was approved by the former council, despite opposition from the Franz Josef community, the council spokeswoman said. It was subsequently rejected by the newly-appointed council, which instead recently agreed on an alternative $1.3m plan to protect the sewage ponds from flood risks, she said. - NZME

University plans massive job cuts The University of Otago has announced plans to cut 182 fulltime-equivalent (FTE) general staff. Vice-chancellor Prof Harlene Hayne revealed the plan at a meeting yesterday at the College of Education auditorium, which started at 12.10pm and was streamed to its campuses around New Zealand. Hayne said the cuts and changes to the way general staff operated were needed if the university was to maintain its “environment of excellence’’. “This business case outlines an exciting new way to meet challenges in a sustainable way,’’ she said. If adopted as proposed they would result in 182 FTE staff being cut – and savings for the university of $16.7 million per year. The cuts were not as extreme as rumours 300 job would go, but Tertiary Education Union Dunedin organiser Shaun Scott said the union was shocked at the depth of the cuts, which would be a massive blow for those who lose

Anyone seen a long, lean Kiwi?

ot too long ago Kiwis had a reputation as lean, mean, working machines, people who would give anything a go, who were fighting fit. How far our fitness star has fallen. Yes, we’re still producing sporting stars of the lean variety, but the rest of us have largely gone to seed. We’re ranked as one of the fattest nations on earth, a ranking we don’t seem to be too keen to shed. Reasons for our beefing up are apparently manifold – more fast food outlets per capita than most countries, a higher use of cars and scoffing processed food like there’s no tomorrow. If we’re fat and old, that’s a state we’ve got ourselves into. It’s the fat and young that are the worry. Alarmingly more than 2000 four-year-olds in New Zealand were diagnosed in the past year as being not just overweight, but as obese. One in three Kiwi kids is considered overweight. Why? Kids of all ages are under exercising but that shouldn’t come as any surprise. Technology has a far higher priority with many kids, but whatever device most have permanently glued to their arm does nothing but exercise a digit or two. And that’s something that can be easily fixed. It’s about attitude, parental attitude. Limiting screen time and chasing kids out of doors to play, to simply be kids. Television is often the child minder of choice and for many, life is lived online, on-screen. Too many kids are exercise observers rather than participants. We might still be clinging on to our international reputation as a sport loving nation, but a few of us are doing a lot; the rest of us are not. In the days when hard physical work was the norm and Kiwis ate what they grew and made. Fat, carbs, you burned them off. People walked, kids ran. We were a lean race. Today few do hard physical work, we turn our noses up at carbs and fats, our recreation is couch bound, we rarely walk, our kids are carted places (eyes glued to their devices). Making from scratch has gone out of vogue. And we wonder why we’re getting fatter … and fatter.

Are we spoilt for choice? P

arty panaceas are coming thick and fast. With an election fewer than one hundred days away, why are we not surprised? Such is the bewildering choice on offer, I thought it might be helpful to bring to your attention some of these vote-winners – as their originators optimistically see them. One or two, though, are no more than instant responses to others. Seymour, for instance, the lone Act hand, though he has hope – expectation even – of being joined by a colleague, Beth Houlbrooke, has responded promptly to the prospect offered by other parties of super subsidies for very young citizens. Says David, magisterially, “Don’t have babies, if you can’t afford them.” It is not known (by me) whether the Act leader is the father of any of those adorable little creatures but if he is, as a direct result of his Party policies, he can afford to be. For some odd reason, his comment, to me, sounds a bit like that old adage, “People in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones” although the connection is not immediately obvious. Seymour hails more from the “stand on your own two feet” school of politics. them humming with freight and born-again travellers who, over the generations, have cruelly ignored rail in favour of road. Where, I wonder, are all these frustrated railway people, anxious to make a come-back to the romance of rail if given merely half a chance? If the idea included the return of the steam engine, with its flashing flanks and clouds of smoke belching from its noble stack, I can see a nostalgic rush of passengers besieging decaying stations, only too eager to ride the rails once more. Sadly, in these climaticallychallenged times, that is never going to happen. It has to be the uninspiring diesel or nothing. Still, it’s a brave suggestion and could yet catch on. The current Transport Minister, the suitably named, Simon Bridges, has declared himself “interested” in this contribution from National’s confidence and supply partner but it may need more than just ministerial interest to see it up and running. While the Maori Party favours railway re-birth, NZ First is more concerned that all government offices are carpeted in wool floor coverings and seedy synthetics banished to the tip.

It is a patriotic, job-creating idea which might be that extra mile New Zealand feels it needs to go if Winston is to be guaranteed his (a) place in history and (b) his crucial role in the formation of the Government, post September 23. Despite his well-documented indifference – nay, aversion – to those glittering “baubles of office”, it would appear he may have to choose which one he is least averse to, after the election. Of course, NZ First is very much a “bottom line/nonnegotiable” party, which, in turn, means any other party seeking his coalition support will have to cut its cloth according to NZ First’s sails. The Greens, meanwhile, are anxious to see a levy of 10c a litre imposed on all or any water produced for export. The water issue looks like becoming a serious election bone of contention. Some would say our H2O is too valuable to us to leave these shores at all, regardless of who owns it, while the matter of that ownership is poised to generate strident controversy. It is, I rather think, one of Winston’s bottom lines referred to above. The Maori Party’s take on this is very different and National will have to tread very gingerly if it is to appease all the stronglyheld differences of opinion. Now, the nation’s farmers have declared themselves strongly opposed to any such levy. Fisticuffs ahead? The big (as well as the slightly smaller) guns – National and Labour – are busy committing

millions towards just about anything. National – 50 million dollars to support unemployed youth; one hundred million to build 60 thousand more “affordable” homes. Labour – no tax cuts for the wealthy (or anyone else) but $700 to older married couples and $450 to the single folk, to cover the cost of combatting winter cold. And more generosity to come. Then, finally, in this cornucopia of political promises, there’s United Future, party of one, hanging on by the tips of its leader’s bow ties and the locks of his luxuriant grey hair. He is facing the end of the road, after thirty-three years of party-hopping, electoral deals and his long-sustained assistance to the administration in power. Ohariu may, at last, return someone else – ex police boss Greg O’Connor, to be precise – and with him will also go United Future. It has been a brave fight but, seemingly, Dunne’s time is now up. So there’s a selection of the political promises on offer. There will be positively hundreds more in the next few weeks, but now you have a start to build on. Choose wisely. everal weeks ago while on holiday in the Bay of Plenty I received a phone call informing me that a vehicle had been driven through the wall and stopped in the middle of the Family Store. It’s not a call we like to receive but neither is it something we like to see happen to others. The store has since been repaired and we re-opened again during the past week.. We are certainly grateful to God that there were no serious physical injuries but people were shaken up none the less. Had this incident happened in the morning our guess is that the outcome would have been far more tragic. So like I said, we are grateful to God for the safe keeping of all concerned at the time.

It is truly amazing no one was injured. Many people believe it is just good luck or bad luck depending on your perspective, but I believe that the God of the Bible is watching out for us. Does this mean bad things shouldn’t happen? Does this mean those who believe in God will not go through difficulty or trials? Does it also mean if God is real there should be no poverty, crime, hunger or homeless people in the world? Well, not at all.

God loves his creation and the people He created and part of that love is free will. God has chosen to allow us to believe in Him, or follow Him if we want and choose too. Followers of Jesus Christ are not immune to trials, struggles and hardship but just seek to walk with God through them. Bad things happen all the time and there are enough signs of God’s presence in the world to show he cares for us and about us, from the intricacy of the little snow flake that was falling from the sky this morning to the vastness of the night sky, from the beautiful sunrises and sunsets to the incredible uniqueness of people around us. Yes things will continue to go wrong but we can trust God to walk with us if we invite Him to. I’m certainly hoping that we

Fuel thefts rife in Mexico The police officers gripped their assault rifles tightly as they stared at the men filling plastic tanks and loading them onto a dozen pickup trucks in a cornfield in central Mexico. Even though a crime was being committed in front of them, the officers said it was too dangerous to move in. They had to wait until the army arrived to advance because the suspects were betterarmed than they were and an earlier attempt to arrest them had been repelled by gunfire, officials said. “In the morning there were 40 trucks loading,” said Francisco, a security employee with the state oil company Pemex. “We saw them loading, we went in, and they started shooting at us. The criminals had an armoured car.” The suspects weren’t cartel traffickers loading a drug shipment, but gasoline thieves tapping a state-owned pipeline – a form of organised crime that is growing in Mexico and has led to a series of deadly encounters. But it has become an industrial-scale operation, involving a string of villages and hamlets along pipeline routes, in many Mexican states. The government says more than 6000 illegal pipeline taps were found in 2016 and officials have been detecting an average of about 20 taps a day this year. It estimates fuel theft costs Mexico about $1 billion a year.

The fuel theft gangs often have the support of corrupt local officials and the residents of towns that rely on the income from pipeline tapping. As the stakes have risen, fuel theft has become a blood industry. In early July, nine people were killed, including five men whose bodies were burned. The killings involved a gang of distributors trying to collect from local vendors who were

unable to meet their sales quotas because of police raids. As the police officers waited near the cornfield in Puebla, they saw a huge column of smoke rise into the sky after a clandestine warehouse of stolen fuel went up in flames about 3.2 kilometres down the road. The thieves left the cornfield after they had apparently loaded all the stolen fuel they needed onto their pickup trucks. A former soldier carrying an AR-15 and extra clips who was patrolling the pipeline for Pemex said the police officers had earlier been attacked by three armoured trucks, explaining their reluctance to confront the thieves a second time. The battle against the fuel thieves has left a strange “huachicolero” landscape east of Mexico City. Fields are littered with leaking illegal taps, abandoned fuel tanks and Mad Max-style vehicles whose interiors have been ripped out to hold thousand-litre tanks. Fires from stolen fuel are common. Arrests are rarely made. - AP

Now, we don’t think there’s going to be a woman in charge of the Tardis after this regeneration. Not only has Phoebe Waller-Bridge ruled herself out, Olivia Colman is too busy. Still, it’s nice to think that the Doctor could be a lady in the future. Purves, a companion in the mid-1960s to William Hartnell begs to differ. He tells us: “That’s not a misogynistic view. It’s just that I don’t think it’s right. A bit like James Bond, Doctor Who ought to be a man.” When it comes to which man, he doesn’t mind.

Travel ban relationships extended by judge A US judge has expanded the list of family relationships needed by people seeking new visas from six mostly Muslim countries to avoid President Donald Trump’s travel ban. US District Judge Derrick Watson in Hawaii ordered the government not to enforce the ban on grandparents, grand-

children, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins of people in the US. “Common sense, for instance, dictates that close family members be defined to include grandparents,” Watson said in his ruling. The US Supreme Court in

June exempted visa applicants from the ban if they can prove a “bona fide” relationship with a US citizen or entity. The Trump administration has said the ban will not apply to citizens of the six countries with a parent, spouse, fiancé, son, daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law or sibling al-

Second Uber driver charged with rape

Babies inherit more than DNA from their mum

Queensland police are urging women who’ve been sexually assaulted while using the ride-sharing service Uber to come forward after a second Brisbane driver was charged with rape. A 37-year-old man faced Brisbane Magistrates Court yesterday charged with the rape of a 16-year-old girl in the city’s south on July 8. Police haven’t disclosed any details of the alleged attack. The arrest comes a week after a 47-year-old driver was charged with raping a young passenger three times. Police say the two incidents are unrelated but they do believe other assaults may have occurred. Detectives have previously said they believe the 47-year-old man may have abused other women collected late at night from central Brisbane in the last two years. - AAP

Mothers are passing on much more than DNA to their unborn babies, Australian and German scientists have discovered. They’ve found that unborn babies inherit a type of protein from their mums that is vital for their development. The scientists say their study, published in the journal Science yesterday, provides groundbreaking evidence about how babies inherit not just DNA but biochemical information essential for their survival. “This was completely not known before: that something that is not DNA and gets passed on from mums is actually a crucial component of early development,” said Dr Ozren Bogdanovic, a scientist from Sydney’s Garvan Institute of Medical Research who took part in the study. The scientists, led by Dr Nicola Iovino at Germany’s Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics, based their findings on a study of fruit flies, whose genes are similar to those in humans. They focused on a certain type of histone protein that helps package DNA in the nucleus of cells, discovering that a specific chemical change to the histone was passed

on to fruit fly embryos from their mother. However, when the scientists removed those mutations from the histone, the fruit fly embryo didn’t survive. Dr Bogdanovic said while it is well known that mutations in histones can be caused by a person’s genetic background and lifestyle factors, such as a bad diet, scientists hadn’t previously known that they could also affect early development in embryos. “You could think this type of study, if proven to be true in humans, would have implications in the interrogation of various developmental disorders, on maybe in vitro fertilisation (IVF) techniques,” he said. Dr Bogdanovic said while the study was groundbreaking in terms of showing how another level of information is passed on from parents to babies, scientists still have plenty to learn. “Over the past few years we’ve seen growing observational evidence that environmental influences – diet, stress or trauma, for instance – can lead to changes in individuals that are passed down to their children and grandchildren,” he said. - AAP

Spider-Man stars dating Spider-Man: Homecoming stars Zendaya and Tom Holland have been dating in real life for about a year, according to reports. The pair has poked fun at part of the story about them, but not the part about them being a couple – rather they claim they’ve taken holidays together. Holland, 21, gushed about his 20-year-old co-star in a previous interview, calling her “so great” and “amazing”. A source said they’re more than just friends, however. “They started seeing each other while they were filming Spider-Man,” says the source. “They’ve been super careful to keep it private and try and spend as much time as possible with one another.”

Rapper arrested Rapper DMX has been arrested in New York on federal tax fraud charges. Prosecutors say the rapper, whose given name is Earl Simmons, owes $1.7 million in taxes and has engaged in a multi-year scheme to conceal millions of dollars of income from the Internal Revenue Service. Prosecutors say Simmons raked in millions from his songs, including the 2003 hit X Gon’ Give it to Ya and avoided paying taxes by setting up accounts in other names and paying personal expenses largely in cash. The 46-yearold Yonkers native was to appear in Manhattan federal court late this week.

London hit by acid attacks Police are hunting two men following four suspected acid attacks in less than 90 minutes in east London. One victim was said to have suffered “life-changing” injuries during one of the attacks late on Thursday. The Metropolitan Police say the incidents appear to be linked and two involved victims having their mopeds stolen. The attackers pulled up to the four separate men and doused them in the corrosive liquid, police say. At the start of the spree, a 32-year-old moped driver had been approached by the pair as he drove in Hackney. The two male suspects had tossed the noxious substance into his face before one of them jumped on his vehicle and the other drove away on the vehicle

No compensation for fairground death The family of a young girl who was killed when she was flung from a ride at the Royal Adelaide Show will receive no compensation because the operators of the ride have no ability to pay. Adelene Leong, who was on holiday from Malaysia, died when the eight-year-old was thrown from the Airmaxx 360 ride in 2014 as her horrified mother looked on. A serious design fault and dayto-day failings with the operation of a ride contributed to her death, the South Australian Industrial Court has ruled. The company that operated the ride, C J & Sons Amusements Pty Ltd, and one of its directors, Jenny-Lee Sullivan, were convicted over breaches to safety laws on Thursday but escaped big fines because of their precarious financial position. Ardlie said, with debts of more than $1 million, there was no way they could pay fines so he could not make orders forcing them to do so. Had they been able to pay he would have fined the company $94,500 and Sullivan $63,000. He said he would also have awarded the girl’s family the maximum $20,000 in compensation. “As a result of the incident the defendants have been financially ruined,” Ardlie said. The magistrate said the operators of the ride did not behave in a reckless or intentional manner, had a high regard for safety, had pleaded guilty and had suffered severe psychological trauma. Trump’s budget not balancing A new government analysis of President Donald Trump’s budget plan says it wouldn’t come close to balancing the federal ledger like the White House has promised. This week’s Congressional Budget Office report said Trump’s budget, if followed to the letter, would result in a $US720 billion deficit at the end of 10 years instead of the slight surplus promised. CBO said Trump’s budget would reduce the deficit by a total of $US3.3 trillion over 10 years instead of the $US5.6 trillion deficit cut promised by the White House. The nonpartisan scorekeeper estimated that deficits in each of the coming 10 years will exceed the $US585 billion in red ink posted last year. CBO said Trump relied on far too optimistic predictions of economic growth and that Trump’s rosy projections are the chief reason his budget doesn’t balance as promised. “Nearly all of that (deficit) difference arises because the

Barnado’s says sorry The children’s charity Barnado’s says it’s “truly sorry” for the sexual abuse of child migrants in its care who were sent from Britain to Australia last century. Appearing before the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse in London, Sara Clarke, a children’s services director at Barnado’s, said the charity recognised the “significant and irrevocable damage” done to child migrants. The inquiry has heard that many children sent from the UK to Australia from the 1940s through to 1970 were sexually abused at farm schools and other institutions run by church and charity groups. Children were also regularly beaten and humiliated, were poorly fed and clothed and given inadequate schooling. - AAP

Smuggler extradited An alleged people smuggler has been extradited from Indonesia to Australia to face charges more than three years after being the subject of an Interpol red notice. In brief Brumbies re-sign Hawera Brumbies first five-eighth Wharenui Hawera has earned a two-year contract extension after arriving at the Super Rugby franchise as a relative unknown. Hawera was plucked from the New Zealand provincial competition before joining the top Australian side on a one-year deal in January. The 24-year-old has played all 14 games for the Brumbies this season, replacing Christian Lealiifano as first choice No.10. Southern have a little extra motivation to be excellent this weekend on the rugby paddock. One of the club’s favourite sons will notch up his 200th match, and for Jon Dampney it’s another milestone in an illustrious career. A popular figure in Mid Canterbury rugby circles, it feels as though Dampney has been around forever – largely due to the fact he has been. This writer can remember covering Mid Canterbury rugby 10 years ago and noting how influential the presence of the man was on the rugby field and how his experienced shoulders were looked to, even back then. This season has been a tumul-

tuous one for the loose-forward turned sometimes midfield back. An operation in the off season left him off the paddock for the combined competition and it has only been in the past couple of weeks that he has returned – hopefully in time to help his side to another Watters Cup success. Michael Ellis will be telling his men ahead of their clash with Celtic this afternoon – in which the winner will automatically qualify for next week’s Watters Cup final – that marking the occasion is important, but getting the win is the main goal for the day. Southern have been brilliant at times this season, and on other occasions they have left a lot to the imagination.

A last-minute try to Rakaia last week will have left the confidence a little shaky, but the experienced heads in the side will be out to carry their team-mates through today’s challenge. Celtic are in a similar boat. They’ve been excellent for the most part this season, especially considering their young roster. Shane Enright has spoken at length about the potential the team has and a shot at the biggest piece of Mid Canterbury sporting silverware would be a massive bonus for them should they roll Southern today. Up in Rakaia there’s something else to play for other than the Watters Cup too. The hosts and their visitors, Methven, will contest the Pat McGirr Memorial.

A notable figure in Mid Canterbury rugby circles, McGirr passed away two years ago and the trophy in his name was competed for the first time last season with Rakaia claiming inaugural honours. It’s the one game of the weekend where everything could happen. If Rakaia win they will qualify for the big dance next week, but a loss will open a slight door for the Methven side. Methven looked the best of their season in the first half of their initial clash with Rakaia two months ago and if they can find that form they’ll give the Combined Country final runner-up a bit of a fright at the Rakaia Domain.

The Wallabies will again go regional and also try to woo the tough Western Sydney sporting market, as they strive to get into top shape for the “mother of all matches” against world champions New Zealand next month. With the Brumbies the only Australian team in the Super Rugby finals, an extended squad of around 50 players will go into three-day camps starting next Thursday in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. The naming of the squad for the first Bledisloe Cup match and the Rugby Championship will depend on how long the Brumbies remain involved in the finals. - AAP

Poite ‘saved career’ British and Irish Lions hooker Ken Owens has opened up about his controversial ‘accidental offside’ in the closing stages of the third test draw with the All Blacks. The Welsh veteran looked to have possibly cost the Lions the series when he caught the ball in an offside position late in the final test at Eden Park, with French referee Romain Poite awarding a penalty within kicking distance to the All Blacks. However Poite changed his decision, downgrading his call to a scrum, saving Owens’ career he claims. “For my rugby career to be defined by that moment, I would’ve been pretty upset,” Owens told the BBC. “I’m just glad it didn’t come down to something like that to define the tour.” - NZME

Kieran Read has just led the All Blacks through a torrid Lions tour but has put his hand up for more for the Crusaders. The No.8 will start for Scott Robertson’s men against the Hurricanes in Wellington tonight, and while he won’t be captain, with Matt Todd taking over those duties from Sam Whitelock, who has been named on the reserves bench, it is a minor surprise to see Read back in the breach so quickly. The Crusaders are guaranteed a home quarter-final, but while All Blacks front rowers Joe Moody, Codie Taylor and Owen Franks all get the week off, Robertson has still named a strong side for what is likely to be a hotly-contested match if the first one of the season in May is anything to go by. Israel Dagg, who played in all three tests plus the Crusaders match against the Lions, has been named at fullback, with George Bridge and Seta Tamanivalu rounding out the back three. Whitelock’s place at lock alongside Luke Romano has been taken by Scott Barrett, who makes a welcome return from knee and ankle injuries.

Chiefs not focusing on under-strength Brumbies The Chiefs are staying focused despite the Brumbies sending a weakened team into their final round robin Super Rugby match in Hamilton. The Australian Conference leaders have made 12 changes to their starting line up from the side beaten last week by the Reds in Brisbane, as they rest players ahead of next weekend’s home quarter-final. Assistant coach Neil Barnes says his team have their own quarter-final planning to carry out so isn’t getting caught up in the Brumbies’ methods. “We’re concentrating totally on ourselves and how we play the game. “We’ll still respect whoever fronts up out there but this is all about us,” Barnes said. The Chiefs will be hoping they’re the team that play in Canberra next week, rather than play a draining quarter-final in Cape Town against the Stormers. To earn the shorter trip, they must first beat the Brumbies this afternoon and then

hope the Crusaders beat the Hurricanes in Wellington later tonight. The Chiefs have left out three of their All Blacks with Brodie Retallick, Sam Cane and Anton Lienert-Brown all being rested for the play-offs. Barnes said it was about refreshing the key trio mentally, as much as physically, following the intense test series against the British and Irish Lions. The Chiefs could struggle in the engine room after lock Dominic Bird was ruled out with a concussion. Barnes says regular loose forward Mitchell Brown is capable of plugging the gap. “He might not be as tall as the other guys but still very good at executing his roles.” It is unlikely the Chiefs will play at home again this season, meaning the match is a home town farewell for successful coach Dave Rennie, test halves pair Aaron Cruden and Tawera Kerr-Barlow and Maori All Blacks winger James Lowe. - NZME

Blues at full noise In naming a virtually full-strength Blues team to play the Sunwolves in Tokyo today, Tana Umaga has made a statement that nothing but a good performance will be acceptable in his team’s final match of the season. There have been no cheap caps handed out for the match at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Stadium that effectively means nothing for either team. Of his senior players, only Jerome Kaino isn’t starting, and Umaga has named the loose forward who started all three tests against the Lions on the reserves bench. Lock Patrick Tuipulotu (ankle) and first-five Piers Francis (foot) have been sent home due to injury, a disappointing way for their seasons to end. Predictably, there are starts in their final matches at the franchise for prop Charlie Faumuina and No.8 Steven Luatua. The Blues ought to be motivated enough to give their two stalwarts an appropriate send-off, but if there was any doubt then they have been left out, according to Umaga. “It’s [our] first time in Japan and we want to finish the season with a bit of a bang,” he said. - NZME

Huge praise for Bennett Could Tour de France cycling star George Bennett be New Zealand’s best athlete? That’s a huge can of worms to open up, but Kiwi cycling legend Julian Dean has taken to social media with his views, after Bennett climbed another spot to ninth in the Tour’s general classification yesterday. The Nelsonian hung with the race favourites until the final metres of a stage that many considered the toughest of this year’s event. The 214.5km journey into the Pyrenees certainly shook up the field, with Italian Fabio Aru snatching the yellow jersey from three-time champion Chris Froome. Four minutes 24 seconds behind Aru, Bennett is poised to record New Zealand’s highest ever placing in the classic – Tino Tabak finished 18th in 1972 – a performance that should see him elevated into the top echelon of riders around the world. Late last year, he achieved a top-10 finish in the prestigious Vuelta a España and then broke through with victory at the Tour of California last month. “I will put it out there that George Bennett is NZ’s top athlete with his performances last 12 months and now Le Tour 2017,” Dean tweeted this week. And he should know, having carved his own piece of Tour history over seven attempts at the event. Dean won a stage as part of the Garmin-Cervelo team time trial in 2011, having finished second twice on individual stages the previous year. In 2009, he was the only rider to finish all three grand tours (France, Italy and Spain) and was shot in the hand with an air rifle on the French 13th stage. “It certainly makes me immensely proud to see George in that position,” Dean said, comparing Bennett to recent All Blacks stars Richie McCaw and Dan Carter. “One of the things people don’t understand is how big cycling is, as a sport. “It’s truly a global sport and many of our sports that we hold so dearly in New Zealand are only sports that a few countries in the world participate in. Cycling is certainly not like that.” But is Bennett a superior athlete to McCaw or Carter in their prime, or all our current All Blacks? Better than our increasingly athletic America’s Cup sailors? Our world-class rowers or paddlers? Daniel Ricciardo believes the Silverstone track boosts his chances of extending his career-best streak to six straight podium finishes at tomorrow’s British Grand Prix. With his Red Bull team reportedly bringing more car upgrades to England ahead of a major change for the Hungarian Grand Prix, Ricciardo was feeling positive. “It’s never a given but I definitely feel we should be in with a shot on a track that suits us,” the 28-year-old said. “It’s a high-speed circuit and aerodynamically our car is getting really good now. - NZME

was lucky enough to visit rellies in Townsville last week, lucky because their ‘winter’ temperatures hover around a steady 28-29 degrees, and lucky because my time there co-incided with the Supercar V8s doing their thing around Reid Park. Townsville is a wonderful city; brilliantly designed with big wide streets, a great beach (except for the crocodiles), tourist mecca Maggie Island a short boat trip away, a big hill in the middle for the fitness freakos, excellent eating houses, and even a casino should you wish to make a fortune (or a donation). But last weekend it was all about the V8s. Pretty much the whole city gets behind the Townsville 400, as it winds around the 2.8km circuit taking in part-track, partcity streets. And the racing is fabulous. The track is a favourite of the Supercars drivers, with the big guns averaging around 145km/h around it. The atmosphere is superb, right from when you first climb

over one of the covered walkways to get into the centre-field. One thing that stood out early – the presence of the police, lots of them. Wandering around in clumps of six, eight or more; with tasers and guns at the ready to shut down any anti-social behaviour in a flash (one I observed constantly had his hand on his gun, something Freudian in there surely). But out of the 40,000-plus fans there on our day out, I didn’t see a single event, a single overintoxicated fan – nothing to suggest that it wasn’t just a big junket for the officers, perhaps their ‘bonus duty’ for the year! But on track, in the heat, there were the second-tier V8s, the Aussie Racing Cars (sort of mini-Mustangs, Camaros etc, with 16-valve engines revving to 11,500rpm, little screamers), the Toyota 86s which always guarantee close, exciting racing, the GT Championship, with a stellar line-up of exotic sports cars, and the V8 Utes, serious muscle power with the back ends always threatening to break loose.

In between there was the Aussie Bandit, a Holden ute with a massive V8 plonked on the deck, which wheelstands its way around the track, the Hot Wheels motorbikes doing all their trickstery tricks, and the Hot Wheels Mustang and ute, which drift around the track together, creating a massive smoke cloud (although I’m not sure the script included them coming together down the back straight). But all of that is just the entree; the main event happens when the big fellas rumble out on the track, the crowd comes to attention as the V8 behemoths roar around in their warm-ups, spitting, bellowing and snarling as the drivers try to keep them on track, Kiwi drivers Shane van Gisbergen, Scotty McLaughlin

and Fabian Coulthard all at the sharp end of the action. When they’re unleashed to go racing, it’s close to needing ear protection, with the thunderous roar reverberating around the circuit – when they change gear down the straight there’s an explosion of unburnt fuel louder than any gunshot you ever did hear – glorious stuff! The ultimate place to lean on the fence is at the 100m braking mark at the end of the front straight; you’re about 10 feet away as an earsplitting 280km/h guided missile rockets past, with only a split-second before they hit the corner, and the drivers, at the same time as stomping on brakes that are already glowing red-hot, are contemplating their next passing manoeuvre, not to mention other cars blasting out of the pits and joining the action about that point as well. Drearily boring, watching cars go round and round a track? Don’t think so. If you’re somewhere, anywhere near the Supercars – don’t hesitate for a moment, just go.

Kiwi Supercars racer Shane van Gisbergen will go drifting again – this time at the Honeywell Garrett International Drift Challenge at the World Time Attack Challenge event at Sydney Motorsport Park. The reigning Supercars champion will drive an MCA-prepared Nissan 370Z at the event and has been involved with the team on two previous occasions. The 28-year-old Kiwi has plenty of drifting experience on both sides of the Tasman. “I am seriously looking forward to getting back into a competitive drift car,” he said. - NZME

Supercars expanding A 16-round Supercars calendar for 2018 is on the cards with the series all but certain to expand with two additional events. The non-championship Australian GP round has already been confirmed as a pointscoring event while the championship is likely to take in at least one other round. One option is to take a second round to South Australia at the new Bend Raceway near Adelaide. Other possible options are the Sepang circuit in Malaysia swhile a support race at the Singapore Grand Prix could also be an option. - NZME

New car for Holder New Zealand Rally Championship defending champion David Holder has sourced a car for next month’s Goldrush Rally Coromandel. Holder ran the Hyundai NZ i20 AP4+ car in Rally Otago and International Rally of Whangarei as part of a shared drive but missed the last round in Canterbury. Tuke signs with Spanish team for Volvo Blair Tuke has confirmed his bid for sailing’s triple crown, signing with Spanish team MAPFRE for the upcoming edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. Just three weeks after lifting the America’s Cup in Bermuda with Emirates Team New Zealand, Tuke will link up with MAPFRE in Sanxenxo next week to begin preparations the 2017-18 race, which gets under way in Alicante in October. Tuke will be a trimmer/helmsman with the Spanish team, which is skippered by his longtime friend and rival in the Olympic 49er class Xabi Fernandez. Tuke’s participation in the iconic round the world race gives him a shot at pulling off a rare treble of Olympic, America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race victories in consecutive years. The 27-year-old said the chance of making history is not

his main motivation for doing the race, which he has dreamt of doing since he was young. “I’ve only been told that in the last few days. That would be amazing to do, but for me it’s not my driver at all,” he said. “The Volvo is actually something I wanted to do before the America’s Cup and maybe before I started to get into Olympic sailing. “It’s just happened in a roundabout way. “My motivation is just to go out there and hopefully help MAPFRE get across the line first at the end, and for myself to grow as a sailor and to broaden my skills and basically get better.” While ocean racing will be Tuke’s focus over the next year, he said he has not ruled out another Olympic campaign with his long-time sailing partner Peter Burling. The pair already have Olympic

mulling over his options. If Burling does take up an offer to compete in the upcoming race, it is likely it will be on a different boat to his Olympic sailing partner of nine years. Tuke admits it will be “a little weird” to be in a different boat to Burling, but said they have faced off against one another before. “It will be different, but we know that we’ll have the Olympics together after this and then try and defend the Cup for New Zealand together.” For Tuke, joining MAPFRE comes after a long association with the Spanish team. During the Auckland stopover for the 2014-15 race, Tuke was involved with the in-port racing with the team, and was the “jumper” on board for the start of the southern ocean leg. Titans re-sign Peats NSW hooker Nathan Peats has spurned interest from rival NRL clubs to sign a three-year contract extension with Gold Coast. The 26-year-old, who made his State of Origin debut in game one this year, will remain with the Titans until the end of the 2020 season. Peats landed on the Gold Coast after being off-loaded by Parramatta mid-2016 as they scrambled to address a salary cap scandal. There were whispers he could return to the Eels and his agent said in April at least two clubs were keen to acquire his services. - AAP

Milford back from injury Brisbane’s backline injury crisis has eased slightly with five-eighth Anthony Milford to return from a shoulder injury for today’s clash against Newcastle. The locals may have the most to say at the final harness racing meeting of the season at Ashburton tomorrow. After an indifferent week on the weather front, things could get hot on the Ashburton surface with only two weeks remaining for the season. And in true Mid Canterbury fashion, local knowledge will always be a valuable commodity. There are local contenders scattered throughout the programme and plenty of winning chances too. Rakaia horseman, Warren Stapleton has a big team of horses in throughout the day and more than just the one strong hope. Stapleton will be represented by runners in four of the eight races. Maiden trotter Here We Are will begin the day for his team and there’s no doubt that the ability is there to win a maiden race, but manners will be required. Holly Trouble, who lines up in race three alongside stablemate, Wishes Star, was a very good second last week at Rangiora behind another local in Jean Sebastien. Johnny Morrison drives both Here We Are and Holly Trouble while Leo O’Reilly is on board Wishes Star. Morrison is back in the colours later in the day to drive Trouble Del who has been leaving the manners at home recently, but is more than capable and then he will be in the bike behind Beaudiene Gambler in the last race of the day. Gerard O’Reilly has a couple of strong chances early in the day. Leo’s Gift is on debut in the opening race of the day and has shown plenty at workouts and trials in preparation for race start No.1 while Women In Charge goes around in Race 2 and has shown ability as well. Ricky May will be busy throughout the day with a number of drives of which the best appears to be Crackared for his

good mate, Brendon Hill. Last start winner Jean Sebastien looks to be a good chance at making it two wins in a row late in the day for Methven’s Carl Markham. The big son of Love You boomed home from well back in the field last week to win impressively and will be a strong chance again if he’s close enough turning for home. Tomorrow’s meeting will also come with mixed emotions for long-time club secretary, Fiona Stuart who this week resigned from her position within the racing centre. Stuart has been with the estab-

lishment for the past 36 years and announced her resignation to the clubs who contract to the racing centre earlier this week.

Wynne bags four Samantha Wynne was on fire at Phar Lap Raceway yesterday, winning four races at the South Canterbury meeting from as many rides. “I was really glad that I could get the job done for the owners and trainers,” she said. “Most of them have been with me from the beginning.” Although a successful day for the Irish jockey, it is not her biggest haul. “I won five races at Oamaru last year, but today I only had four rides which made it that much better,” Wynne said. The four-win haul adds to a rewarding season for Wynne, although it has been an emotional one for her. “It was a fantastic season and it is ending a lot better,” she said. “It was very up and down with a lot of rollercoasters, losing Rebecca (Black) was very sad and then losing my best horse a few weeks later was very hard. “Racing has a lot of ups and downs and I am only just starting to learn how to manage the downs, because you’re not as tough as you think. “I think it got the better of me mid-season because I was trying to be brave and I just needed to face what was going on. I am glad I am on the right side of that now.” Seventh on the jockeys’ premiership, Wynne said she is happy she is close to attaining this season’s goal. “This year’s goal was to finish in the top ten. Next season I’d like to finish in the top five and I’d really love to win a Group One.” - NZME

Features move to Hastings The Wellington Racing Club’s prestige jumping events have found a new home and will be run at Hastings next Thursday. This week’s polar blast left officials with no choice but to call off today’s meeting at Trentham that featured the Grant Plumbing Wellington Steeplechase and the Anuka Smoker Wellington Hurdles. However, New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing has announced the events will be slotted into Hawke’s Bay Racing’s programme. The steeplechase will run at the unchanged distance of 5500m and the hurdles will drop back from 3400 to 3100m. The change of venue was forced following an inspection of the Trentham track yesterday morning and stewards and club officials didn’t take too long to call a halt to proceedings. “I understand it wasn’t a difficult decision to make to abandon,” Hall said. “Those of us who have been in Wellington for the last 48 hours won’t be surprised by that.” Two main areas of concern left the inspection committee in no doubt the meeting couldn’t go ahead. “There was surface water on the figure eight course and they did look at closing one jump and plotting a path around it, but that wasn’t feasible,” Hall said. “There was also a lot of surface from the 200m mark. It was a significant area under water.” Delaying the meeting wasn’t a viable option either. “The forecast has deteriorated a bit as well so we couldn’t move it to Sunday,” Hall said. - NZME

Reinke Manufacturing is regarded as the world leaders in travelling irrigator GPS guidance. Many of their Swing Arm Corner centre pivot and lateral systems utilise this form of guidance. As the number of Reinke systems in New Zealand increases, we need to add to our team of service technicians to ensure our clients systems are installed and maintained to the highest level. All our Reinke technicians have received extensive factory training with service schools in the USA and in Australia. Ideally, we need someone with centre pivot and lateral irrigator technical knowledge, however someone with auto electrical knowledge would also be considered.

Adored Grandad and Pop of all his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
