Business Mid Canterbury members are urging the government to take action over a looming labour shortage. The organisation’s board met with Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew last week to discuss the future growth of the district’s businesses. They were concerned about the effect that low unemployment and a lack of workers coming into the region from the North Island would have on the local labour market. They are lobbying the government
to take a closer look at how immigration is managed, particularly at regional and provincial levels. However Ms Goodhew is wary of immigration policy becoming “too regionalised”. Unemployment in the Ashburton District sits at about 2.2 per cent – less than half of the national rate of 5.7 per cent. Business Mid Canterbury (BMC) administrator Rene Artz said they were looking at how they could “tweak” immigration policy so it was specific to Mid Canterbury.
“We’ve got broad brush immigration policy that applies to the whole country,” he said. “We’re saying “how about looking at this from a regional perspective so we can get the right labour into Mid Canterbury”.” There is very little capacity to grow, but competition for labour could lead to higher wages which would benefit workers, he said.
