Crowds flock to races They set a strong blueprint 12 months ago, but organisers of the Farming Families Day at the Races are hailing the second instalment of the day a success with close to 500 people attending the event at the Ashburton Racecourse yesterday.

Established by a group of passionate rural people from around Mid

Canterbury, and further afield, in conjunction with the Ashburton Trotting Club’s final meeting of the season, the day was designed to allow the rural community a day off the farm in a nice and relaxed situation where they could socialise with like-minded people.

“It’s about them getting away for a day and being able to forget

about things for a bit,” Craig Wiggins, who was part of the organising crew, and the event MC, said.

“And to see so many people here is fantastic, a lot of these people have been doing it pretty tough lately so to see the smiles on their faces is fantastic.”

While the day was centered around the action on the track,

those there for the Farming Families Day were treated to a plethora of activities and giveaways throughout the day and a fashion in the field event which drew plenty of interest.

All entertainment and food for the day was free with more than a hundred prizes handed out at various points during the day.

While no official confirmation has been given to repeating the event again in 2020, the feeling from those involved was that it was highly likely they would be back in 12 months to deliver an even bigger and better day.

Simple ceremony signals major project

It was a simple ceremony to say farewell to Ashburton’s Methodist Church Hall, but it signalled the beginning of one of the biggest and most expensive projects in the Ashburton District’s history.

Shielded from a bitter winter wind by safety fences and tarpaulins a small group of people gathered to listen to minister Heather Kennedy farewell the hall before demolition starts as part of the district’ s $53 million civic centre and library project.

The foundation stone was chipped from its home of 57 years and a time capsule opened to reveal newspapers and plans that will now join other church memorabilia in district archives.

To create a site for the civic administration centre and library, the church hall and its neighbour, the former County Council building, will be demolished over the next two months. Alongside this work, the Baring Square Methodist Church will be strengthened and a new annex created along its southern side.

While the church itself was built in 1926, the site on the corner of Cameron Street and Baring Square has a much longer as-

sociation with Methodism.

In the 1870s there were two Methodist churches in Ashburton – Primitive and Wesleyan, with churches in Cameron and Wills streets.

The Cameron Street church was moved to Baring Square onto the site of the current hall in 1892 and served as the Methodists’ place of worship until the ‘new’ church opened in 1926. The new church came at a cost of nine thousand pounds.

The two branches of the church had united nationally in 1913 but in Ashburton they were not one until 1919.

With the new church now used for worship, the original was used for Sunday School, bible classes and for girls’ and boys’ brigade, cadets and girls’ and boys’ clubs.

There was heavy demand on space in the old church and in the 1950s discussions began on its future. The parish decided it was time for a purpose-built church hall.

As a child in the 1950s she recalls countless fundraising concerts and said that each Sunday children held a coin trail as their part in the fundraising effort.

“That shows how determined we were to raise money,” she said.

Watson was at the laying of the foundation stone in 1961.

Once the hall was completed and opened, it hosted many concerts, dinners, choir festivals and pot luck dinners, all designed to raise funds to pay off the mortgage, she said.

“I’m hopeful, when the refurbishment is completed, this will begin again. It brings people together.”

She’s philosophical about the hall’s demolition and said she has no desire to make a last visit.

“I like to remember it the way it was, full of life. Nearly all the significant events of my life have taken place in Baring Square,” she said.

“Never before in history have youth been more in need of guidance than the present time,” he told the gathering of 500 people assembled for the opening ceremony.

Originally the hall was a stan-

dalone building but in 1991 a curved roof extension was built joining it with the church.

Once the church hall and former County Council building are demolished, the Methodists will begin strengthening work and refurbishment of the Baring Square Church.

New GPs bring youth and energy

The opportunity to have a range of outdoor pursuits on their doorstep was the catalyst that saw two doctors pack their bags, leave their home countries and become provincial Kiwi GPs. Mohammad Abudalu, from Israel, and Lewis Jones, from the United Kingdom, have joined the Sealy Street Medical Practice with both saying they were attracted to Mid Canterbury because of the relaxed pace of life and the recreational opportunities on offer.

Abudalu said he was keen to move away from city life and New Zealand was one of the top options on his list. Decision made, he then looked for the right location and Ashburton came out on top.

“I thought it was time to calm down a bit and it’s somewhere my dog will love too,” he said.

While Abudalu, 30, has been in New Zealand for one month, obtaining his New Zealand registration was a simple task compared to bringing his three year-old Siberian husky Hazeem into the country.

His much loved dog is still to arrive and Abudalu is shaking his head over the complicated process he’s had to go through.

There were never any thoughts of leaving Hazeem in Israel.

“He’s part of my life, he’s my child,” he said.

In Israel Abudalu worked in emergency services and family medicine and he said he is enthusiastic about the opportunity to become a Kiwi GP in place where he could participate in activities he loved.

“It’s an opportunity to follow my passions. In the city it would be difficult. I’m now a skier and I have a season pass and I want to get out mountain biking and horse riding,” he said.

Jones, 30, has been in New Zealand since November and came with his wife Rachel and their two preschoolers. He has a special interest in paediatrics and orthopaedics.

“We came for adventure. My wife and I both like to travel and see different communities and cultures and we wanted to go somewhere before our children started school,” he said.

He’s a mountain biker and skier and a distance runner, but wife Rachel has now taken up the running mantle and is competing in a serious of half marathons. Jones has become weekend child-minder.

part of medicine in many countries.

And that meant general practitioners were able to practice medicine the way they knew was right rather than thinking about what could go wrong and having to cover their backs.

New Zealand also differed in that there was the opportunity to practice in a more evidence-based manner rather than there was in a privately funded system that was more output focused, they said.

New Zealand was no different to most other countries in having a shortage of doctors, the pair said.

“The practice crisis is not just New Zealand and it’s not just general practice. Worldwide we are not training enough doctors and we all come out with huge debt,” Jones said.

There’a joke in medical circles that it’s not until you’re over 40 that you start getting into your golden earning years, Abdualu said.

Both doctors were attracted to general practice because it offered opportunities to deal with the whole patient. Even if you referred a patient to a specialist you were involved in the diagnosis and most often, in the start of treatment, they said.

Jones started surgical training in the United Kingdom but decided that wasn’t for him.

“There’s a certain personality type that fits well with surgery.

Mine didn’t match. With general practice, caring is not a one time thing, you’ll see your patient again.”

Abudalu said the opportunity to get to know your patients was one of the big attractions of general practice.

And both agreed the variety that came with never knowing what each appointment would bring meant every day was different and that kept interest and enthusiasm high.

Like all doctors, they know they now work with patients for whom Dr Google is always present.

“We just get used to that and firmly debunk it,” Abudalu said.

New ambulances in country A new ambulance model designed specifically to support New Zealand’s rural and remote communities has arrived in New Zealand, but it is unknown yet if any will be sent to Mid Canterbury.

The new fleet of 14 Volkswagen First Response Units were handed over to St John at a launch event in Auckland on July 11.

Designed as specialist First Response Units, the new ambulances will enhance emergency response times to isolated communities, an important step in improving the equity and access of healthcare to all New Zealanders.

Another 60 vehicles will be rolled out over the next two to three years, but a St John spokeswoman said the locations of those vehicles are yet to be confirmed.

Tony Devanney, St John Assistant Director of Operations, says the fit-for-purpose vehicles are smaller and nimbler than a traditional ambulance.

“They are ideal for narrow roads, difficult terrain and St John first responders working outside metropolitan areas,” he said.

“These new units have ample room for treating and stabilising patients while a transporting ambulance is on the way, ensuring the best possible clinical care for our patients.”

The East Cape’s Waihau Bay is one of the first areas to receive one of these purpose-built units and Station Manager Spady Te Pou says his team of rural volunteers are welcoming its arrival.

“Apart from the modern spec, the shorter job cycle times mean volunteers can remain in their

local communities and have greater flexibility. We’ll be able to make ourselves available to respond to emergencies more often, supporting the community and the health outcomes of our patients,” he said.

“St John volunteers are the mainstay of rural and remote emergency response and are critical to the delivery of ambulance services. It is vital that we provide them flexibility when donating their valuable time to the community.”

around the country have made the delivery of these vehicles possible.

“Fundraising is essential to getting this new fleet on the road and we want to acknowledge those donors who have given so generously to their communities,” Devanney said.

“The development of this new First Response Unit is a great example of New Zealanders coming together to ensure all communities have access to the best emergency health care possible.”

Racecourse looking to host campervan park

The approval of neighbours could be crucial in the future of a plan to establish a self-contained motorhome park on Ashburton Raceway land.

Ashburton’s trotting and racing clubs are applying for a resource consent to develop the park and are in the process of

consulting immediate neighbours on Racecourse Road, outlining the proposal and asking for their written approval.

The site in question is at the western end of the racecourse and with over 3500 square metres tagged for the development there would be the ability to accommodate up to 20 self-contained vans. All of those vehicles

would be required to have certificates of self-containment.

Trotting club president Alan Neumann said that Ashburton, like many raceways, was looking at generating additional income from its land.

The campervan idea had been used in Nelson and had been pretty successful, he said.

The land tagged for the motor-

home park was not used on race days and the area is well screened from dwellings on Racecourse Road by a large hedge.

The camping area would operate on an honesty system and its upkeep would be part of the overall racecourse caretaking.

The combined clubs hope to have the campervan park open by summer.

In brief Build a will online Rather than spend time with your solicitor making a will, there’s now an online option that ensures your assets end up where you want them to when you die.

Ashburton legal firm Argyle Welsh Finnigan has launched an online will builder that can be completed at home. Wills, will still be checked and signed off by a solicitor but by doing the paperwork yourself the system is streamlined. Dying without a will occurs with around 1500 people a year in New Zealand. Without a will, your next of kin will get your assets but there is a schedule of who gets how much and that may not have always been the deceased’s wish. How assets are distributed is set out in Section 77 of the Administration Act 1969.

If a person dies without a will family have to apply for letters of administration that could take several weeks for the High Court to process. The will builder can be accessed on AWF’s website.

Youth arrested Police have arrested and charged one person after a fire that damaged derelict Antonio Hall in Christchurch. More than 50 firefighters spent hours trying to save the Riccarton Road property after a “significant” fire erupted about 5.20pm on Friday. Residents in about 50 neighbouring properties were evacuated for several hours. The person would appear in Youth Court this week.

224 firearms handed in NZME A total of 224 guns were handed in on Saturday at the Government’s first buyback event.

One hundred-and-sixtynine owners of now-forbidden firearms passed through Christchurch’s Riccarton Racecourse during the five-hour event, which started at 10am.

It’s one of 258 that will run across the country over the next three months.

On top of more than 200 guns, owners handed in 217 parts and accessories – with the total compensation cost coming to $433,682.

Acting Canterbury District Commander Mike Johnson said

everything ran smoothly, and firearms owners’ attitude towards this process was outstanding.

“It’s been a very positive experience, we’re really proud of what we’ve achieved today.”

Johnson said people were queuing up outside the venue from 8.30 – more than an hour before the event was set to begin.

“We opened early to facilitate the public coming through – and they went right through to past 3 o’clock. The engagement from the public has been stunning.”

He said although there was a bit of a wait at times, people had a phenomenal attitude.

“I didn’t see anyone who was grumbling – or see any angst in the room. There was a real reali-

ty that this was the first of these processes, and they were here to hand them in and get fair compensation for their weapons.”

Although more than 900 Cantabrians had signed up online to hand in their guns, police didn’t find Saturday’s attendance a letdown.

Johnson said that number represented the whole region – many of whom would likely attend events closer to home.

He said after Saturday’s success, hopefully more of them would have increased confidence in the process.

“This law change doesn’t make people who’ve got these firearms bad. They’re good New Zealanders. [We’re] encouraging them to

come in and partake in the process during the six-month period, so that we honour the intent behind the legislation.”

Police Minister Stuart Nash praised both police and gun-owners for the success of the busy event.

“New Zealand has never run a gun buyback and amnesty before. Months of work has been invested and it has paid off.”

Nash extended his thanks to the people of Canterbury – who he said had done the right thing.

He said the results of the first collection were very encouraging, with early figures indicating people were coming through the door faster than one every two minutes.

Six TeenAg students from New Zealand have been caught up in a campus-wide lockdown at a United States university.

The girls were attending the 4-H Congress at Montana State University in Bozeman when it was placed into a lockdown.

It was prompted by threats made by a university employee who was about to be fired, according to the Associated Press.

Students, employees and visitors were ordered to stay in locked rooms with window blinds drawn for nearly two hours while officers searched for the man.

He was located and detained.

The New Zealand students, who are in Montana on a threeweek TeenAg exchange, are all safe and uninjured.

The girls are from Dipton, Five Rivers, Oamaru, Ashburton, Timaru and Te Awamutu. They’re being chaperoned by Bridget Huddleston from NZ Young Farmers.

The incident happened on the final day (Friday NZ time) of the 4-H Congress.

The students have been participating in educational workshops, livestock judging competitions and learning about career opportunities in the primary industries.

The event attracted students from around the world.

They’ll spend the remainder of the trip being billeted by host families.

Sheeran confirms marriage

Barry weakens to storm AP Barry rolled into the Louisiana coast, flooding highways, forcing people to scramble to rooftops and dumping heavy rain that could test the levees and pumps that were bolstered after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005.

After briefly becoming a Category 1 hurricane, the system weakened to a tropical storm as it made landfall near Intracoastal City, about 257km west of New Orleans, with its winds falling to 112km, the National Hurricane Centre said.

By late afternoon, New Orleans had been spared the worst effects, receiving only light showers and gusty winds. But officials warned that Barry could still cause disastrous flooding across a wide stretch of the Gulf Coast and drop up to 50 cm of rain through Sunday across a part of Louisiana that includes New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

“This is just the beginning,” Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said. “It’s going to be a long several days for our state.”

The Coast Guard rescued a dozen people from flooded areas of Terrebonne Parish, south of New Orleans, some of them from rooftops, a spokeswoman said. The people included a 77-year-old man who called for help because he had about 1.2m of water in his home.

None of the main levees on the Mississippi River failed or were breached, Edwards said. But a levee in Terrebonne Parish was overtopped by water, officials said. And video showed water getting over

a second levee in Plaquemines Parish, where fingers of land extend deep into the Gulf of Mexico.

Nearly all businesses in Morgan City, about 137km west of New Orleans, were shuttered with the exception of Meche’s Donuts Shop. Owner Todd Hoffpauir did a brisk business despite the pounding winds and pulsating rain.

While making doughnuts, Hoffpauir said he heard an explosion and a ripping sound and later saw that the wind had peeled off layers of the roof at an adjacent apartment complex.

In some places, residents continued to build defences. At the edge of the town of Jean Lafitte just outside New Orleans, volunteers helped several town employees sandbag a 600-foot stretch of the two-lane state highway. The street was already lined with one-ton sandbags, and 30-pound bags were being used to strengthen them.

“I’m here for my family, trying to save their stuff,” volunteer Vinnie Tortorich said. “My cousin’s house is already under.”

In Lafayette, Willie Allen and his 11-yearold grandson, Gavin Coleman, shoveled sand into 20 green bags, joining a group of more than 20 other people doing the same thing during a break in the rain. Wearing a mud-streaked T-shirt and shorts, Allen loaded the bags onto the back of his pickup.

“Everybody is preparing,” he said. “Our biggest concern is the flood.”

Many businesses were also shut down or closed early in Baton Rouge, and winds were strong enough to rock large pickup

trucks. Whitecaps were visible on the Mississippi.

Oil and gas operators evacuated hundreds of platforms and rigs in the Gulf of Mexico. Nearly 70 per cent of Gulf oil production and 56 per cent of gas production were turned off yesterday, according to the US Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement, which compiles the numbers from industry reports.

Barry developed as a disturbance in the Gulf that stunned New Orleans during the Wednesday morning rush with a sudden deluge that flooded streets, homes and businesses. For several days, officials braced for more flooding. But by early Saturday evening, the city saw only intermittent rain and gusty winds, with occasional glimpses of sunshine.

Elsewhere, more than 120,000 customers in Louisiana and another nearly 6000 customers in Mississippi and Alabama were without power, according to poweroutage.us.

Barry was moving so slowly that heavy rain was expected to continue for a few days.

Forecasts showed the storm on a path toward Chicago that would swell the Mississippi River basin with water that must eventually flow south again.

For a few hours, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120km), just above the 74 mph threshold to be a hurricane.

Barry was expected to continue weakening and become a tropical depression today.

Ed Sheeran has confirmed for the first time that he and long-time girlfriend Cherry Seaborn are married. British media reported the pair wed before Christmas in front of about 40 friends and family in Suffolk. In an interview with broadcaster Charlamagne Tha God to promote his album No.6 Collaborations Project, Sheeran talked about how he wrote the song Remember the Name, which refers to “my wife”. 44,000 customers along a 30-block stretch from Times Square to 72nd Street and Broadway. Officials with Con Edison later tweeted that they were working to restore electricity to customers and businesses primarily on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

The temperature was warm, but not as steaming as Manhattan can get in July.

Power reportedly went out at much of Rockefeller Centre and reached the Upper West Side. The outage comes on the anniversary of the 1977 New York City outage

that left most of the city without power.

Many Broadway musicals and plays cancelled their shows, including Hadestown, which last month won the Tony Award for best musical. Several cast members from the show put on an impromptu performance in the street outside the theatre for disappointed audience members.

When the lights went out, thousands of people streamed out of darkened Manhattan buildings, crowding Broadway next to bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Diane Keaton has admitted she hasn’t gone on a date in over three decades.

In an interview with In Style, the actress revealed that while has a lot of male friend, she doesn’t have any “mwahmwah”. “Let’s just get that straight. That one’s important. I haven’t been on a date in, I would say, 35 years,” said the 73-year-old. She went on to explain that while she never gets asked on dates, she keeps busy with work and friends. While she’s now happily single, she previously dated fellow actors Al Pacino and Warren Beatty. “When I was young, I was looking to be loved by these extraordinary people,” Keaton said. “I think I should not have been so seduced by talent.” - AP

Artist returns home

Canadian artist Marjan Verstappen has taken a pilgrimage back to her home country of New Zealand, with her destination being the Ashburton Art Gallery.

The 29-year-old last week opened her exhibition Atlas of Nowhere, and about 70 people attended.

“It’s been a wonderful way to reconnect with the district and the town, and it’s a huge privilege to be able to show here,” Verstappen said.

She grew up in Mid Canterbury

and attended the former Lismore School, as well as Ashburton College.

“I always really loved to draw and paint and just wanted to learn as much as I could about it.”

She would visit her grandmother Drina Verstappen in Christchurch, who had always been busy with crotchet, knitting, embroidery and fixing upholstery.

At college a “real inspiration” was art teacher Claire Robert-Shaw, who was among those attending Verstappen’s artist talk.

Her parents supported her dream to become an artist, and she went on to complete a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture at the Dunedin School of Art. She moved to Canada in 2012 and graduated from OCAD University with an MFA in 2014. Today she lives in Toronto, where she is co-director of Younger Than Beyonce Gallery.

As a contemporary artist, she works across a range of mediums and Atlas of Nowhere features sculpture, photography, painting and drawing.

spired by Samuel Butler’s Utopian science fiction novel Erewhon. Verstappen said growing up here she had always been drawn to the story of Butler as an author living in Erewhon and learning how to sheep farm.

Her exhibition presents a fictional archive of a fictional plant discovered at Mesopotamia station.

The Flower of Neptune is poisonous to sheep, only blooms every 150 years, and was thought to be extinct until images were discovered in the camera of a missing backpacker.

When a group comes together, anything is possible T

welve months ago a group of passionate, rural-focused people came together to put on an event designed to attempt to ease the burden of the battles facing the rural community at the moment.

They set a platform, based loosely on an enjoyable day at the races where they could bring people together, offer them a stress-free day away from it all and a chance to talk with like-minded people.

They dubbed it the Farming Families day at the Races and more than 300 people walked through the doors and enjoyed the hospitality on offer.

It was hailed a success and organisers promised to bring it

back again in 12 months time, bigger and better than before.

And that’s exactly what they did.

What started as a blank canvas more than a year ago, yesterday turned into an event with close to 500 people attending, from all across the Ashburton District.

They came as individuals but collectively stood as one which

was really fantastic to see.

I had the pleasure of spending a lot of time inside the room yesterday where the event was based and got the opportunity to speak to a lot of people in attendance and all were in agreement that things had been stepped up a level and the enjoyment factor was fantastic.

It was also great to see so many prominent members of our community there from MP Andrew Falloon, Labour List MP Jo Luxton and also Mayor Donna Favel and a large number of her councillors who were all taking the time to talk with speak with members of the community.

One thing that was evident above everything else was just

how a group of like-minded people and a community can come together to show support and produce an event that can be such a success.

It’s all well and good to dream up ideas and put them down on a bit of paper, but it takes dedication and time to actually pull it off and the input from a number of major businesses who sponsored the event, the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust and everyone who donated prizes, was invaluable.

And from a racing point of view, the sight of hundreds of people standing out in front of the grandstand at the Ashburton Racecourse again was a real boost and showed that offer a

good product and people will still come. In fact, there was some general conversation around the course yesterday about the location of the “carpark full” sign when the park at the eastern end of the racecourse reached capacity and it was raised that it was probably a fair few decades ago since it had last been used.

The sign is yet to be seen, presumed destroyed due to neglect.

So 2019 was a success.

But perhaps it was always going to be after such a successful inaugural running in 2018, but who knows what 2020 will bring.

Logic would suggest bigger, better and braver than the last two editions and that could mean an even bigger crowd.

Proposed vocational sector reforms ring alarm bells T

he government is currently proposing to reform vocational education in New Zealand and information that has been released to us indicates there are many concerning aspects to these reforms.

Overall, the indications are that the government’s reforms will be wider than first thought, and will strip power from regional New Zealand and hand all of it to Wellington bureaucrats.

The reforms will mean regional polytechnics will be renamed as subsidiaries of a newly formed statutory entity called New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology (NZIST).

After two years those polytechs will be amalgamated.

The polytechs will be controlled by a head office. They will have their individual cash and community legacy assets ring-fenced to a regional level but successful individual polytechnics will lose control of the hard fought reserves they have built up.

Head office will decide how the regions’ cash is spent and all other assets including buildings

and land will simply be taken away and consolidated.

For high performing polytechs this will be devastating.

Education Minister Chris Hipkins is pushing ahead with ideology over what is best for students and regional New Zealand.

It is likely enrolments will fall over the two-year transition period, and perhaps beyond that.

There will no longer be out of region provisions, which have shown to be a critical way of recruiting learners to the regions and attracting international students to New Zealand.

Not only that, Hipkins has confirmed there will be “substantial job losses”.

This is coming from a government that claims to be commit-

ted to the regions.

But these reforms have the potential to destroy polytechs that are integral to their communities.

Another identified risk of these proposed reforms is a reduction in the number of apprenticeships, at a time when we need more apprentices than ever.

We need to ensure we have the builders, the plumbers, the electricians and the engineers to provide the services we need to keep our households and our economy running.

At the moment industry organises placements for apprentices because they understand the needs of their industry and who will best fit their needs.

Industry has the relationships with employers and has the experience that polytechs do not – for example, in areas like remote pastoral care in rural areas.

Nearly every industry training organisation (ITO) said they could collaborate with other parts of these proposed reforms, but emphasised that the role of organising apprentices must

stay with industry.

However, this recommendation appears to have been ignored and this role will now be taken from them and given to a polytech which won’t have the resources and skills to manage that.

We know changes need to be made and it is a challenge.

However, we believe local institutions and businesses are best placed to assess and deliver for their region.

National would return polytechnic decision-making back to communities and the regions.

We would also return apprentices to industry as we believe industry is best at organising industry.

Deadly town tourists can’t stay away from NZME The air in Wittenoom, Western Australia, is so toxic, just breathing it could kill you – yet tourists continue to flock to the town despite official warnings.

Due to deadly levels of asbestos, Wittenoom’s residents have been evacuated and signs have been put up all around, warning people to avoid the area.

The town has been taken off maps and disconnected from the power grid, to avoid adding to the thousands of deaths caused by asbestos over the years.

Most of the victims were miners who lived in the Western Australian town.

Now, in a form of “extreme tourism”, tourists continue to flock to the former mining town, located about 300km inland of Port Hedland.

They take photos of Doc Holiday’s Cafe, the gem shop with the caved-in roof, the abandoned cars and homes and the deserted streets of the former mining town.

Families and groups of friends all risk their lives breathing in the deadly air,

posting their holiday snaps to social media. Some of them even take their pets with them on holiday to the deadly town.

Australia’s Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Lands Ben Wyatt told Nine Honey the town will never be a safe place to visit, due to the high level of asbestos in the air.

According to Wyatt, when the local mine closed in 1966, there were three million tonnes of asbestos residue – known as tailings – left behind in the gorge and surrounding area.

“Exposure to a single fibre of these tailings could prove fatal,” he explained.

“I have a simple message for anyone thinking of travelling to Wittenoom.

Don’t,” he said.

“These warnings signs are not there for decoration or to add your Instagram collection. They are serious warnings about serious health consequences.

“I can’t stress enough that it is particularly foolish to travel to Wittenoom.

There are plenty of gorges in WA which do not bring with them the threat of a fatal consequences.”

Why stick microchips in hotel bed sheets?

NZME It’s the thought that’s skimmed across most of our minds when checking into a hotel room.

When was the last time someone slept in this bed, and how long has it been since these sheets saw the inside of a washing machine?

Well, now a city in China is giving tourists who stay at certain hotels and hostels a glimpse of how their laundry service works by embedding a microchip in bed linen that reveals the date of its last wash.

According to The Times, many people in China will often bring their own bed linen when staying in hotels because the cleanliness of sheets and towels is often not up to scratch.

The chips will be scanned by people staying at the hotels and hostels using the Wuhan Kunteng Laundry, which provide cleaning services.

The water-resistant chip, according to Chinese state-run media outlet Xinhua, can be scanned by a mobile phone, which gives a QR code.

Located inside the corner of each sheet or towel, the chip is also heat resistant so can withstand plenty of washes.

It’s not the first time China has dabbled with technology to make a hotel stay better for guests.

According to CNN, the Hangzhou Marriott Hotel Qianjiang and Sanya Marriott Hotel Dadonghai Bay have become the first of Marriott’s international properties to introduce facial recognition technology for check-in.

Tourists continue to flock to Wittenoom in Western Australia, despite the town being so heavily contaminated with asbestos thousands of people have died.

Warning signs surround Wittenoom, but those desperate for an Instagram shot appear to pay no attention.

The girls put in a superb performance to make the final, and in an epic encounter kept their opposition scoreless, but in a penalty shootout couldn’t quite finish it off. The Grade 12 girls, coached by Hayden Robertson and Brent Smith, were seventh in their competition, and the coaches said their charges showed amazing skills and demonstrated great team spirit all weekend.

Halep upsets Williams AP Simona Halep figures her past problems in Grand Slam finals allowed her to come through against Serena Williams at Wimbledon yesterday.

Halep lost the first three times she appeared in a major final, twice at the French Open and once at the Australian Open.

But now she has won two in a row – last year at Roland Garros, and yesterday at the All England Club, where she made only three unforced errors while beating Williams 6-2, 6-2 in under an hour.

Halep says her losses “helped me for sure to be different” on this occasion.

While nerves can affect a player, Halep adds, she learned to think of it as “a normal match.”

That approach sure worked on this day. Halep beat Williams 6-2, 6-2 on Centre Court for her second major title.

Williams was trying to win her record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title, but she failed in a final for the third time.

Open. Williams still holds the record for most major singles titles in the professional era with 23, one more than Steffi Graf.

But Margaret Court, who won 13 of her Grand Slam singles titles in the amateur era, has 24 titles overall.

Halep, who won last year’s French Open title, had only three unforced errors to Williams’ 25 in the final.

Halep dominated the seven-time Wimbledon champion from the start, breaking Williams in her first two service games and taking a 4-0 lead.

At that stage, Halep had hit six winners and zero unforced errors.

Williams had zero winners and nine unforced errors.

Williams’ only break point of the set came at 4-1, but she hit a forehand wide.

Meanwhile Juan-Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah became the first Colombians to win a Grand Slam men’s doubles title, beating France’s Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6), 6-7 (5), 6-3 in a Wimbledon final that lasted just under five hours and concluded under the Centre Court roof.

The retractable cover was closed after the fourth set, which finished at about 8pm after the teams had been playing for more than four hours.

Fechney hits top form High scoring games were the order of the night in the Mid Canterbury Men’s A-Grade Basketball competition on Wednesday night, with one player scoring more than half of his team’s points.

In the first game of the night, Team Donkey faced off against Farmers Corner, with Farmers Corner coming out on top 93-82.

Team Donkey started off with their bench players to give them a few more minutes on the court.

They were able to hold their own pretty well until Farmers Corner began to find gaps in the Donkey defence to open up a small lead.

The usual starters were subbed in and then managed to apply pressure on Farmers Corner as well as finding the hoop.

What entailed was an excellent game of basketball, with some excellent shooting and hard-nosed defence from both sides.

Farmers Corner were ahead by double figures at the start of the third quarter, however Team Donkey, as they have done all season, began to claw their way back to take the lead 62-61 halfway through the third quarter.

A time out by Farmers Corner reset their defence and fired up the offensive intensity.

They crashed the boards relentlessly and were able to grab offensive rebounds and allow second and third looks at the basket.

The fourth quarter was tense as Farmers Corner held a slight lead.

This is usually the quarter when Team Donkey takes the game away from teams, however after a positive start, it was Farmers Corner that began to work better offensively and score crucial baskets.

The lead stretched as Team Donkey struggled to hit their shots, and the last two minutes was filled with missed opportunities, whereas Farmers Corner managed to maintain their lead and take out their second win over Team Donkey 93-82.

For Team Donkey Pip Johnston again shot well from the outside hitting 27 points (including 7-3 pointers) and was well supported by Kieran Hunt with 18 points.

For Farmers Corner, four players hit double figures, Ramil Ilumin and

Randy Buenafe each with 18 points, Ryan Manzon 15 and Marvin Agacer 14.

The second game of the night saw Ashburton College take on Newlands, with Nick Fechney taking the game by the scruff of the neck, putting on 51 points as Newlands ran out 96-81 winners.

Again both teams were not at full strength, although Newlands were missing the threat of the 7-foot Jason Greig.

The game started off at pace as College started well.

However the Newlands boys weren’t going anywhere and stayed in touch trailing 21-24 at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was started off well by Newlands as they were able to outrun the younger College team.

Leading the way were Marc Juntilla and Nick Fechney, who was beginning to run hot.

He was running a good lane on the fast break as well as starting to light up from the arc, nailing 24 points in the quarter.

The College team’s defence was not working at all well, allowing Newlands to continually attack the basket.

They began making unforced turnovers and by the end of the quarter Newlands were ahead 59-46.

The third quarter was more of an arm wrestle as neither team got on top, even though College employed a full court press, with Newlands ahead 74-61.

The final quarter was another Nick Fechney show as he simply could not miss, firing in 18 points.

College did try and respond but every time they scored, Newlands came back down and found the hoop.

Newlands eventually ran out winners 96-81.

It was the complete game from Fechney, putting together fast breaks, 3-pointers, offensive and defensive rebounds on his way to 51 points.

Marc Juntilla was the supporting act scoring 23 points with his penetrating drives and was constantly in the thick of the action.

For College, Fotu Hala scored 24 points and was excellent on the drive, Quinn Ritchie worked hard with 17 points and Will Joyce finished with 12 points.

Marc Juntilla could only play a supporting role for Newlands on Wednesday night in the Mid Canterbury Men A Grade competition as his 23 points was overshadowed by team-mate Nick Fechney, who scored 51 points.

Shaq follows Bezos strategy to multiply fortune

NBA champion Shaquille O’Neal has revealed he followed some clever advice from Jeff Bezos – which saw his net worth go through the roof.

Over the years, the former Orlando Magic and Los Angeles Lakers star has also proven himself to be a savvy investor, with interests in Google, Apple and 24 Hour Fitness, as well as snapping up a range of fast food franchises, reports news.com.au.

But in a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, O’Neal said he owed much of his financial success to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who is the world’s richest man with an estimated

$US163.1 billion net worth.

O’Neal said he “heard Jeff Bezos say one time (that) he makes his investments based on if it’s going to change people’s lives.”

“Once I started doing that strategy, I think I probably quadrupled what I’m worth.”

According to NBC Sports, O’Neal’s own net worth is believed to be around $US400 million.

During the interview, he said after he retired in 2011 he only invested his earnings in initiatives he truly believed in, sometimes turning down opportunities that seem like a sure thing if he didn’t personally love them.

“If something comes across my desk, and I don’t believe in it, I don’t even look at it,” he told The Wall Street Journal.

“Whenever I do business, it’s not about the money.”

O’Neal, who invested in Google early in 1999, said it was his best investment so far, but that he also enjoyed his Krispy Kreme doughnut involvement.

“I like doughnuts … Krispy Kreme is a fabulous doughnut.

“I was introduced to it in college and have been in love with it ever since,” O’Neal said.

O’Neal was snapped up by the Orlando Magic in 1992 and soon made a name for himself.

Four years later, he signed with the Los Angeles Lakers, before being traded to the Miami Heat in 2004.

From there, he went to the Phoenix Suns, the Cleveland Cavaliers and finally the Boston Celtics.

He retired in 2011, bringing his glittering 19-year basketball career to an end.

But he’s never strayed far from the spotlight, having released four rap albums. He’s also a music producer and DJ, and has appeared in a string of movies and even his own reality shows, Shaq’s Big Challenge and Shaq Vs.

‘Brutal’ country rugby

Rakaia booked themselves a date with destiny and a tilt at Mid Canterbury’s club rugby showpiece, the Watters Cup, against Methven this weekend with a brutal 34-22 victory over Southern in Saturday’s semi-final at the Rakaia Domain.

With the last spot in the final to face top qualifiers Methven on the line, the match was everything it promised to be – a true country rugby semi-final match in which there was no love lost between two sides who have a proud history of producing some thrilling games of rugby when they square off on the paddock.

Not one player who stepped onto the paddock could be accused of not bringing passion to the game, which created a quite remarkable viewing spectacle as the two sides traded blows for 80 minutes of enthralling rugby.

It was Rakaia in the early ascendancy, with Tim Hanrahan producing a stunning solo effort within the first three minutes to waltz over the line almost untouched, and when Inoke Tonga added his conversion and then a penalty 15 minutes later the Southern faithful were quiet, down 0-10.

But, just as they have all season, Southern dug deep, and a try from Matt McAtamney and then a barnstorming effort from Adam Williamson to bulldoze his way over out wide and a penalty from Jon Dampney had them right back in the match – in front 1510 at half time.

With the score advantage at the break, Southern would have fancied their chances of doing the necessary to keep their Rakaia rivals at bay during the second 40 minutes, but Lepani Seitava’s effort to score shortly after the break and then another try, this time to Jackson Donlan, had the home side back in control, and all of a sudden the match was turned on its head.

A yellow card for the influential Seta Koroitamana threatened to turn things around once again, but Rakaia stood tall and matched Southern throughout the 10 minute period, with Tonga adding another penalty to extend the lead to 12 with just under 20 minutes to play.

But again, the experience of Southern came back to bite Rakaia and when Scott Vessey crashed over with 10 minutes to play and Richard Fridd added the extras, all of a sudden the 27-22 lead Rakaia had looked very vulnerable.

A sustained period of pressure from both sides ensued with Rakaia throwing everything at it to try and keep Southern from their danger zone.

Slowly but surely they marched their way back down the field, before Kody Nordqvist barged his way over on full-time to seal the deal and give his side the 34-22 victory and, most importantly, that spot in next week’s final.

For Rakaia co-coach, Terry Murray, the effort was immense and his pride in the side he coaches alongside Kyle Gray was clearly evident, but he was also quick to deflect a lot of praise on rivals, Southern.

“This has been a massive moment for us.

“I could not be prouder of the way this group of boys have played and conducted themselves, they are a remarkable group of men,” he said.

“But Southern, what an effort for them – to make the combined final and effectively win that and then get themselves back up to be competing for the semi-finals of the Watters Cup, that’s a huge effort, they’ve done really well.”

Heading into Saturday’s match, Murray said that his side were fully aware of the threat that Southern consistently pose and that they drew key learnings from

their victory earlier in the competition.

“We let them get away on us early last time and then we had to play catch up to win it, so the focus was on ensuring we came out of the blocks flying and hit the ground running.

“And although we went into the break down, it still felt like we had things in control, we were in the match it was just a few points that were against us, so the message was to get back out there and stick to the core roles and not do anything stupid or give away silly penalties and we managed that.

“I thought the boys stuck to the game plan really well and achieved what we set out to do which, as a coach, is great to see.”

For Rakaia, Tonga had a standout game in the first-five jersey and produced a perfect day with the boot, but the entire team stood up and asked to be counted.

Southern coach Andrew Carr could only lament the missed opportunity on Saturday, but paid credit to his team for what has been a standout season.

“Saturday was our heaviest defeat for the season in terms of points, so they’ve given it their all throughout the season,” he said.

“If you’d said we would have one hand on the Combined Cup and make the Watters Cup semi at the start of the season I would have probably scratched my head a bit to be honest, but we’ve achieved that and have to be proud of it.

“All we set out to do was produce consistent rugby from week to week and we’ve done that all season, so I’m pretty proud of everyone involved.”

As for Methven next week, Murray was clear on where he sat in terms of predictions heading into the match, while Carr said all that was certain was that it was go-

ing to be a great final to watch.

“I think they are the team to beat, we are definitely heading in as underdogs, but that’s OK with us,” Murray said.

“It’s going to be a great game and it will probably come down to who wants it more on the day.

“They’re both good sides and capable of some great rugby so it’s intriguing,” Carr added.

Saturday will be a huge day at the Ash-

burton Showgrounds for both the Methven and Rakaia clubs, with not only their senior sides battling it out for the Watters Cup but also their Senior Reserve teams doing battle in the Centennial Mug in the curtain-raiser after they both won their semi-finals on Saturday.

Methven beat Collegiate while Rakaia managed to hold off Southern.

A report of those two matches will appear in Tuesday’s Guardian.

‘Own worst enemies’

Mile record tumbles

By Michael Burgess The Warriors’ biggest weakness in 2019 was exposed again on Saturday night, and ultimately cost them a much needed win at Suncorp Stadium.

While their late fightback to force golden point and their tenacity during extra time were admirable, the 18-18 draw with Brisbane was another missed opportunity.

Draws are rare events in the NRL, with everything engineered to force a result.

The last one occurred during the 2016 season.

But the Warriors will have many more regrets than the home side, and yet again the review session won’t be pleasant viewing.

The Warriors did more than enough to win the game, dominating yardage and possession.

They could have had the match all but wrapped up by halftime, but didn’t make the most of numerous opportunities.

From there came a familiar pattern.

The Warriors have rarely managed 80 minute performances this season, and here was another example.

It’s their Achilles heel, as most weeks they seem to manage one good half and one poor one.

The Warriors were red hot for much of the first 40 minutes, constantly exposing the Broncos’ inexperienced right edge.

They rolled down the field at will, with their forwards making hay against Brisbane’s much vaunted pack.

A 16-6 halftime advantage wasn’t really an accurate reflection of their dominance – they deserved another couple of tries – but it was at least a platform to build on.

Instead, the Warriors seemed to forget the foundations of what had worked so well in the first half.

The recipe was surely to suffocate the Broncos through scoreboard pressure and field position, but instead they helped to revive the home side with a succession of errors.

Both Broncos second half tries were preventable.

Everyone stopped for Anthony Milford’s hopeful grubber, before Issac Luke’s unfortunate mistake in the in-goal area was pounced on by Darius Boyd, while David Fifita’s powerful solo effort was through a succession of half-hearted tackles.

The message from Warriors HQ in recent weeks has centred on playing each moment, staying focused and switched on, but that has yet to fully sink in.

Despite enjoying 58 per cent possession, the visitors were crippled by mistakes.

They made 18 in total, with most coming in the second half.

The Warriors were also bereft of fortune, notably with Peta Hiku’s try late in the second half being chalked off.

The bunker found an alleged knock on in the lead up, when there was a strong case for benefit of the doubt being applied.

The loss of Ken Maumalo in the 56th minute to concussion after a nasty head clash was also a significant factor, and shows how much the team have come to depend on the 24-year-old who had already ran for more than 250 metres at that point.

Hiku was also hampered in the second half after a knock.

On the positive note, the team showed impressive energy and hunger during golden point, even if their set up for field goal opportunities again left a lot to be desired.

“I’m pleased that we are going away with a point,” said coach Stephen Kearney. “[But a] little bit disappointed that it wasn’t two.”

The result leaves the Warriors three points outside the top eight, and virtually no margin for error if they want to be involved in September football.

“As long as there is a possibility, we will be fighting every inch of the way,” said Kearney.

“We’ve had some pretty close finishes, and I’m sure if we keep at it those finishes will tip our way over the next month or so.”

Major upgrade for Formula Ford One of New Zealand’s longest-running single seater motor racing championships, the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship has had a major refresh with MotorSport New Zealand appointing a new championship organiser and announcing new regulations.

Using international Formula Ford regulations of the era, the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship first ran in 1971 with David Oxton the inaugural champion.

With the 48th domestic season of Formula Ford racing about to commence, MotorSport New Zealand President Wayne Christie says he is pleased that robust

consultation with teams, competitors, race car suppliers and prospective championship organisers has resulted in a cohesive and positive refresh of the Formula Ford category.

The key aspects are: A return to the traditional name of Formula Ford, rather than Formula 1600, a name adopted in 2016 to remove the vehicle manufacturer link. The change back to Formula Ford reflects the fact that other countries still use the Formula Ford name which helps our competitors with awareness of their achievements in this important career-building race category.

Formula Ford Racing NZ has

been appointed as the new championship organiser. Newly affiliated to MotorSport New Zealand, the FFRNZ club started as a group of racers keen to help take the Formula Ford category into the future.

The championship continues as a multiple-chassis class for which competitors can either build their own engines or have their engines prepared by one of the many engine builders around the country.

The regulations will ensure even tighter controls on running cost, restricting competitors to just two engines per season, which are fully sealed.

Christie says: “Firstly, I would

like to acknowledge the South Island Formula Ford Association which has done a tremendous job running the NZ Formula 1600 Championship for the past few seasons.

“Their hard work has ensured that the Formula Ford category has continued as a national championship with some good support from competitors and engineers during this time. The changes have been made to try and create a more cost-effective, competitive class providing drivers with a level playing field.

“We are keen to reignite the class as a key pathway for young race drivers as they progress up the motor racing career ladder.”

Sifan Hassan broke the long-standing women’s mile record in 4 minutes, 12.33 seconds at the Herculis Diamond League meeting yesterday.

The Dutchwoman fractionally beat the 4:12.56 set in 1996 by Svetlana Masterkova, a two-time Olympic champion that year in Atlanta.

Hassan knocked two seconds off her personal best and finished five seconds clear of Britain’s Laura Weightman.

It was the first outdoor world record on the track so far this year.

She reached the 1200-metre mark in 3:10.2 and pushed hard to clock a 62-second closing lap at Stade Louis II, the home of French soccer side Monaco.

Hassan was surprised, but thinks this result stands her in good stead for the world championships in Doha, Qatar, in late September.

“The first 800 was a bit slow, so after that I wasn’t thinking it would be a world record,” she said.

“When I crossed the line I was so surprised. After you run the last 400 like that and set a world record, it gives me (you) much confidence over 5,000 ... I want to double over 1500 and 5000 in Doha.”

In the men’s 100 metres there was another win for world champion Justin Gatlin.

The 37-year-old Gatlin clocked 9.91 seconds to narrowly beat Noah Lyles in 9.92 – Gatlin’s winning time last Friday at the Athletissima Diamond League in Lausanne.

Michael Rodgers made it a United States podium sweep with 10.01 for third, having run the same time in Lausanne.

“It’s all about putting together a good technical race, to use my experience. It feels great to beat these guys,” said Gatlin, the 2004 Olympic champion.

“This season is surreal; I can’t believe I’m still winning here. Noah is a great runner, so every time I race him I’m excited.”

In other men’s results, Steven Gardiner of the Bahamas won the 400 metres in 44.51 seconds; Nijel Amos of Botswana clinched the 800 in 1:41.89 – the world-leading time this year – and Moroccan runner Soufiane El Bakkali won the 3,000 steeplechase in 8:04.82, another best for the year.

Poland’s Piotr Lisek also had a year-leading 6.02 metres in pole vault and Germany’s Andreas Hofmann won the javelin throw with 87.84 metres.

“I didn’t expect 6.02. It’s almost a dream,” said Lisek, who also set a personal best.

“I’ve been injury free this year and 100 per cent healthy.”

Christian Taylor won the triple jump in 17.82 metres ahead of U.S. countryman Will Claye, 17.75.

The U.S. got another 1-2 in the women’s 400 hurdles, with Sydney McLaughlin (53.32 seconds) comfortably beating Ashley Spencer (54.46).

Meanwhile, countrywoman Kendra Harrison ran 12.43 to win the women’s 100 hurdles ahead of Jamaica’s Danielle Williams (12.52) with both having season’s bests.

Ferns in ominous Cup form NZME It’s two from two for the Silver Ferns.

Following an encouraging start to their Netball World Cup campaign on Friday night with a 19-goal victory over Malawi, the Silver Ferns dominated Barbados 78-25 in their second pool game in Liverpool.

Although the Ferns’ real test will only begin next week in stage two of the competition – where they will likely cross paths with rivals Australia – Noeline Taurua’s side continued to impress.

As expected, Taurua opted for a slightly different starting line-up in order to manage the court time of her stronger players.

Maria Folau spent some time on the bench in the opening quarter allowing Bailey Mes to take to the World Cup court for the first time.

Nerves looked to disrupt a strong start for Mes in the early stages of the clash as she worked on finding a solid connection with Ferns goal attack Ameliaranne Ekenasio.

But building in confidence again under the hoop, things started to settle and Mes finished with a performance Taurua said was pleasing to watch.

“She took a couple of shots to be able to settle but once she got in there she’s very strong under the post,” Taurua said after the match.

“She did a good job out there.

“It’s understandable that she needed to settle herself but she brings a lot of value to not only the team but the unit as well.”

Ferns defender Katrina Rore made it out for her second time back on court since recovering from a calf strain.

Sporting the wing defence bib instead of her usual goal defence, Rore was an influential addition to the midcourt alongside captain Laura Langman.

Barbados shooting duo Sheniqua Thomas and Shonica Wharton showed their strength with impressive long bombs from the circle edge.

And although boasting high hit rates under the post, it was errors in the midcourt which saw a lack of opportunity for Barbados to score.

Further changes and rotations for the Ferns came in the second half as Casey Kopua, Ekenasio and Langman were given some well-deserved rest.

Following a 26-5 second-quarter thrashing, Taurua’s experimental combinations certainly proved themselves promising.

As the second half rolled on, the pace was well and truly set in favour of the Ferns.

Barbados struggled against what was described as the formidable ‘black wall,’ as the Ferns cruised to their second win of the World Cup to remain at the top of their pool.

“I’m really happy with how that whole unit combined and I thought overall it was a great step up from yesterday,” Taurua said.

“I’m really happy especially defensively I thought we were tighter as a unit and created a lot of turnovers ... being able to get all 12 on is a bonus.”

Crash puts Tour title defence further out of sight As their country prepared to celebrate Bastille Day, Julian Alaphilippe and Thibaut Pinot were in the mood for fireworks a day in advance at the Tour de France.

Carrying the hopes of a country that has not seen a homegrown Tour winner in 34 years, the French pair emerged as the big winners of the leg-punishing Stage 8 in the Massif Central

which saw Geraint Thomas crash and lose ground in the defence of his title.

After five hours of exhaustion on the saddle across seven short but punishing climbs, Alaphilippe claimed back the yellow jersey with one of his trademarks attacks, while Pinot asserted himself as a strong contender for the final victory by gaining time on Thom-

■■ASHBURTON A couple of former locals had plenty to say on their old home track at yesterday’s Ashburton Trotting Club meeting at the Ashburton Racecourse.

Terry Chmiel claimed the major prize of the day, the Winter Cup, with Secret Bet whom he trains alongside wife Glenys.

The three-year-old gelding defied his limited experience by beating a strong field of pacers in the feature event of the day – winning narrowly from a game Ardent Lustre with Kiwis Are Flying.

While Chmiel claimed the feature of the day, it was Johnny Morrison (right) who set the tempo with a driving double, including a bold display on outsider, Nanelle Franco.

New Zealand’s leading junior driver and now a certainty to win the premiership with only a couple of weeks to go, was in sublime form.

Morrison clicked early in the day with the showy chestnut Only In America for Mike De Filippi after finding the front early and then taking a trail.

The big pacer then unleashed down centre track to register win one for the career with style.

Morrison was back in the action a little later on in the programme when Nanelle Franco found the front in the fillies and mares mobile and never looked back, bolting away for a big win in a very fast time.

“She was a bit keen, so I thought I’d let her roll,” he said.

“She just kept going.

“I had a look over the shoulder at the top of the straight and they were a long way back from us and every time I asked her to find a bit she kept going.

“It was pretty impressive really.”

The double took Morrison to 98 career wins, 61 of them coming this season – enhancing his chances of picking up the milestone of 100 before the season is over.

Shark on show It may be a far cry from the sunshine and 35-degree heat he is currently enjoying on a well-deserved Hawaiian holiday, but you can be sure that Te Akau Racing’s Jamie Richards will have an eye on today’s Te Rapa trials where the first of the spring horses go through their paces.

Te Akau Racing will be represented by more than 30 members of their potential new season line-up at Te Rapa, from unraced two-year-olds through to star performers such as Melody Belle and Te Akau Shark.

Richards is relaxed about the prospects for his team at the trials meeting, with most there to enjoy what he considers will be a nice day out.

“There won’t be any pressure on any of the runners on the day, we just want to see them have a day out as part of the early proceedings in their current preparations,” Richards said. “They can have a run around and it will bring them on for the next round of trials at Te Rapa in a fortnight.

“It is a good opportunity for them to

have a wee trip away, stretch their legs and get ready for what comes next.”

Headline acts Melody Belle and Te Akau Shark will contest an open 900m heat with Richards looking forward to having them enjoy a quiet hit-out.

“Melody Belle and Te Akau Shark are coming along nicely and the trial will do them the world of good,” he said.

“All going well, they will be back again in a fortnight and then we can reassess where each of them is at from there.

“It is likely they will clash first-up in the Foxbridge Plate (Gr.2, 1200m) at Te Rapa on August 17.

“The Foxbridge is an ideal stepping stone for where we want to go with them both.

“They are both class sprinters so you would expect them to perform well first-up before we get serious with their main targets.

“Melody Belle will be aimed at the Hawke’s Bay triple crown while Te Akau Shark has Sydney aspirations. We are in no hurry to get him to Sydney so we will just take it one step at a time.”

Have Blues found Prince Charming?

I

f the theory is right, then when Beauden Barrett turns up at some stage for the Blues next year, he’ll wave a magic wand and transform them into a championship team.

There’s long been universal agreement from those who know plenty to those who know less, that Super Rugby is all about the No. 10s. Have a good one and you are a chance of winning the title; don’t have one and forget about it.

No team has strengthened this theory more than the Blues.

When they won in 1996 and 1997 Carlos Spencer was the most exciting first five in the competi-

tion and when they won again in 2003, he produced what would still to this day be considered the most outrageously entertaining 14 weeks of rugby.

Spencer left in 2005 and took with him all hope of the Blues ever winning another title. Since he left the Blues have limped through endless hopeless seasons with no-names and no-hopers bungling away in the No 10 jersey.

It’s not as if having a mediocre playmaker has been their only problem but still, the theory has long been that if they fixed their issues at No 10, they would fix everything. So now we get the chance to find out if this has all been wishful thinking bunkum or rock solid analysis.

Long-suffering Blues sceptics will be wary about believing transformation could be this simple. The Blues, after all, were still fairly hopeless this year. They finished 13th, two of their campaign stalwarts, Ma’a Nonu and Melani Nanai have left and they have three halfbacks who between them can’t get the job done.

To imagine that Barrett can change everything requires a considerable leap of faith, but there is a precedent when it comes to one man making all the difference.

The best example to see how much impact one playmaker can have is Aaron Cruden’s move to the Chiefs in 2012.

The Chiefs had been a bit of a horror show in 2011 finishing

10th and the next year, after Cruden arrived, they were champions. The year after they were also champions and they haven’t missed the playoffs since 2011.

It’s not quite presenting the whole picture, though, to suggest that the only arrival at the Chiefs in 2012 was Cruden and that he alone changed everything.

Dave Rennie also started as a new head coach, while Sonny Bill Williams and Brodie Retallick were added to the playing roster.

But then in fairness, the picture at the Blues might be similar next year. Leon MacDonald won’t be a new coach as such next year, and could prove to be a Rennie-figure. The Blues of course, did lure Williams from the Chiefs, but he

won’t be around next year, meaning they need to find another backline performer.

But could it be that Jordie Barrett is going to drop a bombshell and announce that he is heading to join his brother? If the Blues can snare him they will have enough new bits and pieces at their disposal to instantly become a more dangerous and credible team.

It’s maybe a step too far to believe they will go from 13th to winning the title but in signing Barrett they have pulled off one fairytale of sorts by providing definitive proof that if you kiss enough frogs, you will find your Prince Charming. Maybe they have another in them.
