Mid Canterbury farmers are being told not to light any stubble fires while firefighting resources across the region are stretched tackling wildfires in Christchurch’s Port Hills. A helicopter pilot died while fighting the fires when his aircraft crashed near Sugarloaf carpark yesterday and the destructive blaze has raced over more than 700ha since erupting Monday evening. Mid Canterbury Federated Farmers vice president David Clark said the fire near Christchurch was major and now tragic. “Firefighting resources across Canterbury are stretched and there is limited ability for backup in Mid Canterbury should a major fire develop here. “The message from Federated Farm-

ers is please refrain from lighting fires until the north-west spell of weather has gone and the fire on Banks Peninsula has been put out.” He was angry to see stubble fires lit around the district yesterday, given weather conditions at the time. “It was extremely disappointing on what was a very windy, nor-west day to look around the district at farmers burning stubble. It was nothing short of irresponsible.” Farmers burning crop residue must adhere to strict conditions, including not burning on windy days. Farmers found to have acted irresponsibly if a fire escaped could end up having to pay thousands of dollars to cover the cost of suppression. Clark said there were moves afoot to make farmers apply for permits if they

wanted to burn crop residue, regardless of whether it was an open or restricted fire season. “Federated Farmers are lobbying to try and retain the system we have and that behaviour is not helping the cause. “That said, there is an emergency in Christchurch and our volunteers may well end up going to assist our neighbours in Christchurch to relieve very tired firefighters. “Please don’t light any fires in Mid Canterbury. We don’t need to stretch already stretched resources.”
