In the true spirit of Anzac, the sacrifice of those who lost their lives in the Great War is to be honoured with a patu carved by Ashburton master carver Vince Leonard. The patu (a short-handled club) will be gifted to Belgian man R’eal Desmarets who has made it his mission to connect descendants of fallen World War One diggers with their Belgian grave sites. Perth woman Shirley Knapp commissioned the carving to thank Desmarets for his assistance in finding the headstone of her husband’s great uncle Private Frederick Knapp who was killed in action in September 1917. His sacrifice was marked with a head-
stone in the Tyne Cot Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery near the city of Ypres, where Desmarets lives. Shirley Knapp, who grew up in Hinds, already has a Leonard carving produced years ago and with a little research she was able to track him down. Yesterday Leonard explained the symbols incorporated in the carving on the patu, which reference Desmarets and his wife Marianne, their children and grandchildren. “R’eal is one of those rare people who you come across in life who does things straight from his heart without expecting anything in return,” Knapp said. “He, along with other people from Belgium, have so much respect for and will always honour ‘our boys’ as the Kiwi and Aussie soldiers have come to be known.”
In addition to supplying information and photos to the diggers’ descendants Desmarets makes wooden poppies, hand painted in red with the words Lest We Forget painted on in white, which he places on the gravesites. He and his wife also take their grandchildren to war cemeteries to ensure the next generation understand why these men from foreign lands were buried in Belgium soil in order they will not be forgotten. The patu was officially handed over by Ashburton RSA president Maurice Baker yesterday. Knapp has recorded the full story of Desmarets’ dedication on the website Never Forget (neverforget.org.au). It is titled When People Care and is story number 42 on the site.
