Ashburton’s town centre water feature could be delivered a stay of execution today, with a decision on its future back on the table for debate. While Ashburton District councillors voted by a majority that the feature should be dismantled and re-erected in the Ashburton Domain, a huge public outcry followed that decision. numbers it will mean the council has effectively not made a decision on the water feature’s future. It will remain in its town centre location unless a decision is made in the future to change the status quo. Without the numbers, the decision to move the water feature will stand and its future will become part of a new plan for future developments in the Ashburton Domain. While this plan is still in draft form, it will also be on the council table for discussion today. Four long-term goals are identified – establishing a new hub and focal point, celebrating its waterway, creating a cohesive play environment and strengthening the connections between the domain and the town.

Among the changes proposed are the relocation of the bowling green currently at the West Street side of the domain to a new home in the picnic ground area accessed off Grigg Street or to land at the EA Networks Centre. This would be done as part of creating a new sports precinct. Five precincts have been created in the new plan – gardens, sports, play, promenade and events and 25 projects have been identified within these. The plan will provide strategic direction and co-ordination of expenditure for the next 30 years. Councillors will decide at today’s council meeting whether the domain plan will be adopted for consultation and if so whether this will take place immediately or early next year.
