Strike closes 17 local schools BY KATIE TODD

Local primary school teachers and principals walking off the job are urging that their strike action is about far more than just pay claims. Seventeen of Mid Canterbury’s 19 primary schools have been forced to close today as the result of industrial action by members of the teachers union, NZEI Te Rui Roa, in the hope of more time to teach, lead and support students with additional needs, as well as a pay rise. Ashburton Intermediate principal Brent Gray was among a number of principals that had heard very little feedback from parents regarding the strike and
said he could only assume why. “I hope it’s because they are supportive of us. There has certainly been no one bagging us out yet,” he said. But he was also among a number of schools and boards of trustees across the district who had issued notices to parents explaining the vast number of factors driving the New Zealand education system to a crisis point. Faced with increasing social and mental health issues among students, teachers want more resources and staff, better access to specialist support and more time so that they can work on the things that will make them better at what they do, Methven Primary School principal
Chris Murphy said to parents. Local teachers are facing limited chances to grow in the profession due to issues with relativity, and limited recognition for teachers and principals with specialist skills, Gray explained. And it is also hoped the pay rise could stem teacher shortages – which local schools last year said they are bearing the brunt of, with the added difficulty of teachers not wanting to shift away from main centres.

After living in Oamaru for 50 years, we decided after one visit to move to Lochlea so we could be closer to our children and family. We found the transition from our quarter acre home to our new Lochlea Lifestyle Villa very easy, we were thrilled with the privacy and the Villa had been built to capture the sun so well. We recently celebrated our 60 year wedding anniversary here at the Resort - we are very happy here. Fleming and Joy Robertson
