TONI.W@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Mid Canterbury workers lost almost 83,000 days’ productivity in one year in accidents costing more than $44 million in compensation claims. Figures released by ACC showed Ashburton’s workplace injuries were well above the national average. The data released yesterday was collected in 2012/13. Statistics showed there was also a sharp increase in motor vehicle accident injury claims. The district’s motor vehicle injuries shot up in 2011/12 and the following year surpassed the national trend. There were two roads in the district that cost ACC more than $1 million in claims. The number of day’s productivity lost through motor vehicle-related accidents was 9239. According to an ACC spokesperson in most other areas around New Zealand the biggest cost to ACC was from home injuries. However, in
Ashburton accidents in industrial locations, representing 8.3 per cent of accidents, cost $33.346 million in claims to ACC. While these claims were low in number, it suggested they were more serious in nature, the spokesperson said. Overall the cost of Ashburton’s workplace accidents lost workers more than 43,000 days in productivity. The top five locations for where accidents occurred in Ash-
burton, and claimed through ACC, were home, sport and recreation, farm, industrial location and commercial/service location. The total cost of the injuries that occurred in the home was $4,050,663. However, the top five costs locations on all claims paid out in the same year was industrial location, home, road or street, sport and recreation or farm. The top five causes identified as the cause
of the accidents claimed were loss of balance 25.9 per cent, lifting/ carrying/strain 13.5 per cent, struck by person/animal 10.4 per cent, collision/knocked over by object 9.7 per cent and tripping or stumbling 6.6 per cent.
