Winter showed there’s still a little bite left in its tail with more wet weather across Mid Canterbury yesterday.

In some places around 60mm of rain fell in 24 hours, causing flooding and weather-related issues around the district – just weeks after a record-breaking deluge that soaked the very same land last month.

Roading authorities warned motorists to take care with surface flooding

on roads around the district and people took to social media to flag problem spots on State Highways 1 and 72 as well as Ashburton Staveley Road and Bridge Street.

Rain and snow, as low as Methven, came with a southerly storm that the MetService says will herald a week of unsettled weather.

The Ashburton connection again shone through at the recent Cooperative Business New Zealand 2017 annual awards.

Two of the eight awards went to Ashburton residents, with Ruralco chief financial officer Oliver O’Neill being awarded the Cooperation Amongst Co-operatives award, and co-operative pioneer Brian Cameron winning the Outstanding Co-operative Contribution award.

It was only the second time the contribution award has been given out, with last year’s inaugural winner being former Ashburton Trading Society chairman Phil McKendry.

Co-operative Business New Zealand chief executive Craig Presland said Cameron was a true visionary who was behind the formation of the NZ Agricultural Cooperatives Association, now known as Co-operative Business NZ, back in 1982.

Cameron’s foresight, determination and energy help the organisation become what it is now, Presland said.

Today, Co-operative Business New Zealand’s membership exceeds 100, representing a business sector that employs around

50,000 and generates more than $43 billion in revenues (around 20 per cent of the country’s GDP and one-third of all exports).

“Due in large part to Brian’s leadership and perseverance, extensive legal work was done dur-

ing the 1990s, culminating in the Co-operative Companies Act 1996.

It was an innovative piece of legislation, which has generated considerable overseas interest. It has been highly successful with its low compliance costs and commercial

The Ashburton River started rising in the early hours of yesterday morning and peaked around 133 cumecs at 4pm. During last month’s heavy rain it hit 460 cumecs.

Methven farmer Roz McKenzie said 57mm of rain had been recorded on Greenvale Pastures overnight and up till 1pm yesterday.

“The ground is full and the springs are all up, the water is just

pooling and has nowhere to go.”

She said the water table had been high after July’s rain storm and the ground just starting to dry out for farmers to get on with new season’s plantings. Yesterday’s rain would reduce the window for planting again.

Less favourable conditions would affect germination and eventually crop yield.

McKenzie said several days of gentle nor’west winds would help.

Meteorologists are forecasting changeable winds and more rain at the end of the week.

“It is great though. The aquifers will be refilling and decent snow in the mountains will help recharge the rivers.”

McKenzie said dairy farmers were used to calving in winter weather and new stock would be brought to shelter.

Meteorologist Ciaran Doolin said a series of fronts were moving through this week, bringing a mixture of rain, thunderstorms, snow and strong winds to many regions.

“There’s a little bit of a breather on Tuesday afternoon for much of the North Island and some of the South Island, which may give the washing a window of opportunity to dry out.”

Northerlies forecast for Christchurch on Thursday should bump up the temperatures in eastern areas.

“His efforts in driving lower electricity prices involved a great deal of patience and tenacity, as well as expert knowledge of tariffs, peak/off peak rates and varying price points for volume usage.”

The two awards continued Ashburton’s proud history among New Zealand co-operatives, Presland said, adding the town was known as the co-operative capital of New Zealand.

Other awards presented at an industry function in Auckland last Thursday included Co-operative Business of the Year, which was won by Fonterra, and Co-operative Leader of the Year, which was won by Mitre 10 chief executive Neil Cowie.

Boil water notice A precautionary boil water notice is in place for the Methven and Mt Somers water supplies following yesterday’s big rainfall.

Monitoring equipment at both treatment plants detected high turbidity – otherwise described as cloudiness – in the water supplies. It is likely caused by the 60mm of rain that fell in the area yesterday.

Ashburton District Council is advising residents to boil their drinking water and water used in food preparation for at least three minutes before consumption.

The treatment plant equipment is operating normally, but is less effective during periods of

high turbidity, council’s notice said yesterday. As a precautionary measure, council was asking residents on the Methven and Mt Somers water supplies to boil their water.

The notice will stay in place until council advises otherwise.

It is the third boil water notice for Methven in six weeks. The first was on June 30 after a power outage at the town’s plant and the second followed another big rainfall event on July 21.

Council phoned more than 50 business premises, including hospitality and health care providers, after the July event to make sure they knew about the notice.

Weaver inspired by Ashburton visit

One of South America’s most accomplished and world-renowned tapestry weavers took a sojourn to Ashburton yesterday and left feeling “happy and inspired.”

Peruvian national treasure Maximo Laura stopped by the town to peruse the Ashburton Creative Fibre Open Day and take a tour of Ashford Craft Shop.

Laura, born in Peru, is internationally recognised as one of South America’s pre-eminent textile arts and teachers, whose famous works blend ancient preConquistador techniques with unique and vibrant colours.

He was brought to New Zealand

by Creative Fibre and has spent the past five weeks teaching at workshops in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.

Laura says the trip has been an opportunity to share his knowledge and help those interested in learning his style – from the use of colours and textures, to blending and creating unique “optical effects” “And it’s been a wonderful experience… I’ve been very happy in New Zealand and done four workshops for almost fifty people.

“I found many people interested

in learning my study, in promoting it among young people,” he said.

Laura is a fifth generation weaver who grew up in Ayacucho, a place he describes as the “town of the weavers.”

His works are imbued with the symbols, experiences and cultural iconography of world cultures and have won awards across the globes.

But he said seeing other weavers at work in places like Ashburton has been equally inspiring for his own practice.

“Today (at Ashburton Creative Fibre Open Day) there were people getting new information from one another, sharing knowledge, technology and materials.

“I was not expecting that … back home we never have big competitions or organisations or events, but here people are using each other and becoming more innovative and creative.

“I am learning a lot. New Zealand has helped me a little with continuing my work.”

Though Laura returns home in two days he will be giving a final lecture at Christchurch Art Gallery tomorrow night, and his works will be on display at the Toi Gallery in Porirua until the end of the month.

Fire damages Cameron Street property

The rain provided no respite for Ashburton firefighters who where kept on their toes throughout the weekend.

After attending three fires and a car crash on Satuday, a crew from Fire and Emergency were again deployed on Sunday night to deal with a fire on Cameron Street.

The garage of a residential property near the corner of Winter Street caught alight at

approximately 7.43pm.

Neighbours to the property reported hearing a “massive bang” at the time the fire broke out.

Firefighters from the Ashburton station raced to the scene and were working there for about an hour.

Fire and Emergency Chief Officer Alan Burgess said flames caused “some damage” to the property.

He said the fire was not suspicious but investigations into its cause are ongoing.

When Prime Minister Bill English left Jo Goodhew’s name off the list of ministers earlier this year, he handed her a huge opportunity, the retiring Rangitata MP says.

At the time she admitted she was gutted at what many saw as a raw deal, losing her ministerial responsibilities and effectively being consigned to the back benches, but today, she says, he handed her her life back.

In January, after 12 years as Aoraki and then Rangitata’s member of parliament, Goodhew said she would not be seeking re-election this year; her future would lie outside politics.

“I’ve made no secret of it, if I was still a minister I’d still be seeking re-election, but when I looked at the future without being a minister I knew I needed to look for other challenges. I now have the opportunity to reflect on the challenges of another career after politics,” she said.

The past few months, the past few weeks in particular, have been “a little weird” she said, but she’s had eight months to plan her departure.

“It’s not like I’ve suddenly lost a job. I made my decision in January and I took back control of my life. A 100-year-old said to me ‘you’re getting out while they still like you’.”

Today, reflecting on a political career that spans 12 years, Goodhew says she made the right decision for the right reasons.

“I’m a glass half full kind of person. Looking for a new job at 56 is a whole lot easier than looking for a new job at 59.”

She admits she’s a bit battle weary and a bit more worn than when she won candidacy for the Aoraki Electorate in 2005.

“I’m letting my hair go grey, that’s a trophy and I’ve earned every one of the wrinkles on my face,” she said.

Her career might span 12 years,

but the seeds for that career were sown many years ago, an unlikely beginning – cold South Canterbury spring days in the cab of her father’s farm truck.

She recalls as an eight-year-old, doing the lambing beat to the relentless sound of a truck radio broadcasting politicians in the debating chamber. She’s not sure whether it was brainwashing or genetics, but her father’s political awareness rubbed off and she became the young adult who was first to put her hand up when it came to joining organisations for a cause.

The years ticked by, Goodhew trained as a nurse and, with husband Mark, settled down to raise a family of three girls. Political aspirations were on hold, but they never went away.

She was asked to stand for council, but decided that wasn’t for her. There was an approach from ACT – she thought it was a joke. Then an approach from National, but this was turned down because her girls were too young.

A later approach and she agreed to let her name go forward as a candidate, believing she was unlikely to win selection. The rest, of course, is history.

Winning the Aoraki seat that year saw her juggling children with the demands of a political career.

“That really needs careful planning. Mark generally cooked the meals and I did the thinking and planning. I made an effort to phone or text the girls every night if I was away,” she said.

Inevitably there were times when family came second, but Goodhew said she can count those on one hand.

“I made sure I went to all their rowing camps over the summer and we made sure we still spent a lot of time together. I do wonder though whether because I was away for two nights most weeks that I did try a whole lot harder.”

ily time seem to have worked, as her girls still reach out to her if they’re having a down day, she said.

“I have to say I’m enormously proud of them.”

Harriet is a crown prosecutor in Wellington, Abi works in marketing for a civil engineering company in Auckland and Emily, a dentist, is travelling.

She made it to every important family event, but regrets not taking the family’s loved cat Hogan on his final journey to the vet.

“And I’ve missed funerals of some people I admire and respect, I kind of regret that.”

She’s loved her time on the national scene, but says electorate work has remained very close to her heart.

“I’ve always wanted people to feel they could stop me and talk to me at any time.

I’d like to be remembered for my time as an electorate MP. I’d love people to say I did a pretty good job of that.”

Time is now Goodhew’s friend and she’s determined she won’t be rushing into decisions about her future.

She’ll take a break, have a holiday with husband Mark and then make the call on work and volunteer or charitable positions.

“I want to use my skills, but most of all I want to be with people. My life is pretty much an open book,” she said.

The House rises next week but Goodhew will miss the end-of-term party – she’ll be in hospital having her tonsils out.

As the days tick by until she can no longer tack the letters MP after her name, she’s spending time reflecting on the people and the events that have made their mark on her life. There are many.

“There’s been a lifetime between then and now, but in many ways it doesn’t seem it’s been long. I’m definitely a different person now. I’ve learned a lot, experienced a lot and had so many wonderful opportunities.

“You get to be at the front end of important things that are happening. You’re not an observer, you’re in front of it – celebrations, tragedy and grief. It’s a privilege that’s hard to describe.”

And there are friendships she’ll take away from her years as an MP. Throughout her career, Goodhew said she tried to remain true to herself and her own beliefs.

“There’s only one face that stares back at you in the mirror and if I feel I’ve done a good job, then I’m happy,” she said.

Jury retires in meth grandma trial A grandma accused of smoking meth and then murdering an Auckland toddler because he was too hard to toilet train is now waiting as a jury decides her fate.

Kathleen Elizabeth Cooper, 65, is standing trial in the High Court accused of murder by throwing her grandson down the hallway of their Manurewa home after a toileting accident on December 13, 2015.

Suffering serious head injuries, two-year-old Jermain Mason Ngawhau was rushed to Starship Hospital for emergency surgery, but died five days later.

Yesterday, the jury of seven women and five men retired to begin deliberating their verdict.

Earlier, Justice Sarah Katz told them there was no dispute Cooper killed Jermain.

Prosecutors and Cooper’s lawyers agreed she had thrown the toddler, causing the injuries that killed him, and so was guilty of manslaughter, she said.

She said the key question for the jury to consider was whether Cooper had intended to kill Jermain and was consequently guilty or not of the more serious charge of murder.

The Crown had argued Cooper was guilty of murder because she knew better than anyone Jermain was a frail toddler who could not yet walk and yet she threw him in a way she knew could kill him, she said.

Prosecutor Aaron Perkins QC said Cooper had become increasingly angry and overwhelmed by the challenge of caring for her troubled daughter’s four children, all aged under five.

Westland crash A man has died after driving into a tree in the lower Buller Gorge.

The man was due to arrive in Westport on Saturday night but failed to arrive. Police searched his route on Sunday and discovered the vehicle off the road, where the driver had collided with a tree.

Manhunt continues Police are still hunting for a man that shot at officers with an assault rifle in the Waikato town of Morrinsville. Three officers were shot at after a red Holden Commodore sped through the centre of the town early on Sunday. Yesterday morning officers were still combing the area. “We would like to hear from anyone who has seen the vehicle in the area recently or has any information relating to it,” Detective Inspector Graham Pitkethley said. Waikato district police commander, Superintendent Bruce Bird, described the attack as frightening and like nothing he had come across in 40 years of policing.

She had originally agreed to care for them when she was a 62-year-old woman well into retirement, and Dacre questioned how this could turn into murderous hatred just 18 months later.

He also contested the evidence that Cooper had smoked meth in the week leading up to Jermain’s death, saying the Crown had not proven this.

Christchurch house fire

New safety campaign after crossing deaths The deaths of three people wearing headphones at railway crossings in the past 18 months have prompted a new safety campaign.

The rising number of incidents involving pedestrians at railway crossings is worrying, KiwiRail chief executive Peter Reidy says.

“We are seeing an increase in the number of people using personal-technology and this appears to be causing distraction around railway tracks,” he said.

That included three deaths where the person was reportedly wearing headphones in the past year-and-a-half.

There’s also been a significant amount of near-misses, with 94 recorded last year, and 68 already in 2017, Kiwirail said.

The population was also growing, along with more frequent and quieter trains, adding to the numbers.

A man has died after a fire broke out in a Christchurch home early yesterday. Neighbours who witnessed the blaze on Cashel Street say a contractor driving by the house at 4am alerted emergency services. A Fire Emergency NZ spokesman said three fire crews arrived on scene and extinguished the blaze.

‘Oppression’ goes viral A blistering Twitter thread about “white people oppression” has gone viral, gaining almost half a million likes.

User Julius Goat shared an image of neo-nazis brandishing burning torches at a Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, where a suspected neo-nazi mowed down protesters on Saturday.

He followed it with a series of powerful tweets skewering social inequality and exposing the reasons behind the white nationalist backlash.

His emotive words have struck a chord around the US and across the world after 30 people were injured and one killed in a car attack on anti-racism protesters at the rally.

The Twitter user goes on to list the other injustices that white, middle-class men have never suffered from the travel ban on Muslims to police violence against black people to historic efforts to prove non-white intellectual inferiority as well as church burnings and hangings.

Then he examined the “we will not be replaced” rallying cry of the white supremacist protesters.

He said he would “love to see these people get all the oppression they insist they receive, just for a year”.

That might mean a world “where you ACTUALLY can’t say Christmas”, where “the name ‘Geoff’ on a resume puts it in the trash” or where a polo shirt makes people so nervous it could get you kicked off a plane, he said.

It could mean a world where these men suddenly get a 20 per cent pay cut, “and then 70 women every day telling them to smile more,” he added.

Or one in which if they turned up on a university campus with torches and started fights “the cops would punch their eyes out.”

“Put that in your torches and light it,” concluded Julius Goat.

His excoriating words triggered a huge response on social media, with users thanking him for “well spoken truths”.

Twitter user Jean Keegan shared a quote: “When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality looks like discrimination.”

But another user said he was simply being “told ‘shut up white male’ as if that isn’t the hate speech!”

Many social media users called for the white nationalists pictured at Saturday’s rally in Virginia to be named and shamed.

Horen going on Botched Karin Horen, known as one of the busiest ladies about town, has applied to be on US reality TV show Botched, which helps with reconstructions of surgeries gone wrong. Horen, 44, who separated from Kiwi acting star Manu Bennett last December, told Spy that she hopes Botched will take on her breast reconstruction. “I contracted my first round of breast cancer when I was 26, and insuring myself against future complications was impossible.” Her last fight with breast cancer was four years ago, and since then she’s had a run of eight surgeries. During that time she has created Paddle for Hope, a paddleboarding charity that helps cancer patients fight on with hope after their illnesses.

Venomous snake in child’s bedroom Snakes are one of the perils of living in Australia, but now a Sunshine Coast father has had a terrifying first-hand experience.

He was tidying up the house when he spotted the reptile slithering in the shadows underneath the cot, and quickly called the experts.

Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers shared this image on Facebook, but even when you know it’s there the snake isn’t easy to spot.

“A Little Mountain local was vacuuming his house today when he saw what he thought to be a young brown snake in the [baby’s] room! Keeping an eye on the snake he gave us a call and I rushed out,” said a snake catcher called Max. He found slippery little sucker lurking between the nappy box and the wall.

It comes just a few weeks after an office worker made headlines for successfully wrangling a python out of an edit suite at Channel Nine in Darwin.

“My first suggestion to get rid of it was to burn the place down but no one else went for it,” tweeted news director Kate Limon.

She said her first instinct was to turn to the internet for help.

“I was googling (a snake catcher) to call ASAP but turns out our programme manager is a wildlife warrior,” she said.

“She wasn’t scared at all. In her bloody floral dress and high heels – she put us all to shame.”

The Conjuring spinoff Annabelle: Creation scared up an estimated $35 million in North American theatres over the weekend, making it easily the top film and giving the lagging August box office a shot in the arm. The opening came close to matching the film’s predecessor, Annabelle, which opened with $37.1 million in October 2014. Warner Bros. could celebrate not only the month’s biggest debut but also having the week’s top two films. Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk followed in second with $11.4 million in its fourth weekend according to studio estimates yesterday.

Clarkson ‘nearly died’ Jeremy Clarkson, of Top Gear fame, has announced in a newspaper column over the weekend that he could have died from a recent bout of pneumonia. The presenter suddenly became ill while on holiday in Mallorca, Spain earlier this month, and says he spent “three nights spasming” in his bed before being sent to hospital for tests. Clarkson, who writes in his Sunday Times column that he has “never been ill” in his entire adult life, was told he would need to be admitted for at least a week. When he insisted that it would be “impossible” for him to stay in bed that long, a doctor reportedly told him, “If you don’t do as I say, you will die”.

A step in the right direction?

A

ccountability for those responsible for our troubled youth is a step in the right direction – it’s just whether or not that direction is completely the right one, or not, that holds some cause for concern.

The National Party announced over the weekend that if reelected they would introduce a new youth-offending policy, something that strikes at the very heart-strings of our community.

Police, under the new policy, would be able to issue infringement notices to parents of children under the age of 14 walking the streets without supervision overnight and judges would be able to send youth offenders to an academy at Waiouru where they would get support for issues such as addiction or a lack of necessary life skills.

The second half of the above sounds encouraging – but will of course end up costing the taxpayer more of their hard-earned each year. It’s the infringement notices for parents that raises a few alarm bells.

Parents being held accountable for the action of their children while still in their care is long overdue, but one does have to wonder if shoving a ticket in their direction and asking them to cough up more money for their children’s indiscretions will lead to more and more issues than we have seen before.

A large portion of the troubled youth we encounter here in Ashburton hail from low-income families who are already struggling financially. It’s extremely difficult to afford housing, let alone food and power and all the other essentials of life.

If they’re negligent, then throw the book, but it’s hard to hold someone accountable for the actions of another – even if it is their own children.

Opportunities through family and parental education programmes, which are also part of the new policy, are seemingly the more likely and achievable steps to helping stem some of the flow.

It’s a step in the right direction for sure, but one does wonder if the path will end up at the correct destination.

Arable industry spirits lifting I

have said it before and I will say it again, arable farmers are optimists.

We have to be.

We plant crops in the autumn or spring and hope like anything that Mother Nature plays her part throughout the year and market conditions hit a point to allow us to do it all again next year.

This optimism has been challenged in recent times.

In November 2016 I remained hopeful that we had all the right ingredients in place for a perfect harvest.

We had rainfall at the right times and required rainfall to promote growth and grain fill. The good weather pattern continued through to the early part of harvest, allowing fortunate farmers to get the bulk of their crops harvested and begin to contemplate crop residue burning.

Then the rain began, which put a halt on any remaining harvest for some and delayed autumn sowing for the majority of us.

By May we had fluctuating grain prices, uncertain demand for our products, few autumn-

sown crops in the ground and concerns about the increasing compliance burden on farmers. At this point circumstances were starting to challenge even the most optimistic of arable farmers.

AIMI Survey While the talk around the silo was about the delayed harvest and poor weather for planting, it may not have delayed autumn planting as much as we suspected.

Results from the latest Arable Industry Marketing Initiative (AIMI) Cereal survey show that the area sown in autumn/winter wheat or barley (as at July 1, 2017) was only down by 15 per cent.

This is not bad when you consider the total area to be sown in wheat or barley is to increase by 18 per cent on harvest 2017.

The survey indicated some

healthy spring-sowing intentions, particularly around feed barley.

While it is traditionally a spring -sown crop, it is encouraging to see the area of feed barley forecast to be planted increase 51 per cent on harvest 2018.

Spring planting will soon get under way in North and Mid Canterbury and further south as the ground dries out.

I encourage any livestock farmers wanting cereal crops to get in contact with your grower now to secure your tonnage going forward.

Current trends suggest that there may soon be no uncommitted grain left in farm silos, especially in Southland, North Otago and the North Island.

The poor weather of harvest 2017 does not appear to have had an impact on average yields for milling wheat, feed barley or milling or feed oats, as average yields for these crops were up over 10 per cent.

FAR vote Arable farmers are fortunate that we have a levy body in the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) that is undertaking research and development

on behalf of the arable industry, and those practices are easily transferred from the trial plot to the arable farm.

FAR is undertaking their levy vote and Federated Farmers encourages all FAR levy payers to complete the postal voting on the referendum or jump on the FAR website to vote before August 22.

A ‘yes’ vote will ensure FAR’s continued existence and ongoing contribution to the arable industry.

A ‘no’ vote would result in FAR being wound up and all research and extension programmes ending. I encourage all FAR levy payers to vote.

Strong data from robust research is something concrete we can rely on; with the weather, we just have to cross our fingers.

termine and good on the Labour Party for not setting rates until the homework was done thoroughly and in consultation with the industries affected.

Reasons for supporting the levy are: • Paying a levy is an added incentive to use water sparingly and minimise wastage which hopefully would result in less abstraction from our badly depleted rivers and aquifers.

• To encourage more farmers to grow feed crops such as lucerne and others less dependent on water which some farmers are already doing.

• To provide funds to help pay

to clean up our polluted rivers where government action to date has been woefully inadequate and focused only on expanding the dairying industry with little concern for what the rapidly increasing dairy cow numbers were having on the environment.

Suddenly with an election looming and waterways an election issue, the Government has become concerned about our waterways. They have been aware of this problem for the last nine years but have done very little about it.

Their recent announcement giving $44 million to ‘clean up’ rivers would be a small fraction of

what it will cost but they have at least now acknowledged there is a major problem.

Bring on a levy for water users, why shouldn’t they pay a royalty in the same way oil and mining companies do for using a resource owned by all of us.

Much of the environmental damage has been caused by overextraction of water from our lowland rivers and aquifers and using the water to irrigate farmland, some of which is unsuitable for intensive dairy farming.

It seems appropriate these users should pay the most for the ‘clean up’.

Hotel to ‘step down’ A revised design for Dunedin’s latest five-star hotel bid would result in a building that “stepped” down the hill, the lawyer acting for the project says.

Hotel developer Anthony Tosswill’s team has filed a revised design to be considered when the resource consent hearing for the contentious Moray Pl project resumes this week.

Since Tosswill initially insisted the hotel’s height was non-negotiable, changes have been made to try to allay concerns about the building’s impact on surroundings.

They included reducing the height of two of the three towers that made up the building, resulting in an uneven, or “stepped”, finish at rooftop height, Phil Page, the lawyer acting for Tosswill, confirmed.

The 17-storey tower facing St Paul’s Cathedral would be lowered by one floor, while the tower facing Filleul St would drop by two floors, he said.

The tower at the back of the site, facing Smith St, would remain the

same height, at 17 storeys, he said.

To compensate, and retain the same number of apartments and hotel rooms, the two-level podium in the building’s original plan would drop by one level, bringing it closer to the street, he said.

That change would be accommodated by extra excavations on site, allowing the same two-level car park to be included, he said.

The changes, which also included a new pedestrian staircase facing Harrop Street, were not intended – or expected – to alleviate concerns about the hotel’s height, he said.

Rather, they were about improving the building’s relationship with surrounding streets, Page said.

The changes were expected to “very slightly” reduce the shading concerns raised by submitters, but not visual dominance concerns.

The building’s central service core would also remain at its original height, to connect to the highest of the three towers, he said.

The hearing resumes on Thursday.

The New Zealand dollar barely budged from where it started the day after a brief lift following strong retail sales was short-lived as attention remained focused on events surrounding North Korea.

The kiwi rose as high as 73.31 after the retail sales and was trading at 73.07 US cents as at 5pm in Wellington from 73.09 cents as at 8am and from 73.18 cents in New York on Friday. The trade-weighted index rose to 76.93 from 76.82 last week.

Fund managers employed by the state-owned Accident Compensation Corp are set for a payday after WSP Global Inc, a Canadian listed consultancy firm, offered an 87 per cent premium for Opus International Consultants.

ACC portfolio managers Paul Robertshawe, Blair Cooper and Blair Tallott are listed in WSP’s takeover documents because they own shares in Opus in their own right, in addition to ACC’s 5.78 percent holding.

ACC’s code of conduct allows its investment staff to make personal investments provided head of investments Nicholas Bagnell is satisfied there is no conflict with ACC’s own activities.

WSP is offering $1.78 a share for Opus, which closed at 99 cents on the NZX on Friday.

ACC currently owns 8.55 million shares while the portfolio managers have holdings ranging from 28,930 to 70,000 shares, meaning the takeover would generate proceeds of $15.2 million for the corporation and between $51,495 and $124,600 for its managers.

The offer also allows Opus to declare a fully imputed dividend of 7 cents a share, taking the total on offer to shareholders to $1.85 per share.

Opus shares soared 72 per cent to $1.70 on the NZX yesterday.

Malaysian Stock Exchangelisted UEM Edgenta Bhd, which owns 61.2 per cent of the company, has entered a lock-up agreement to sell into the offer, subject to shareholder approval.

Four telecommunications companies have been warned about breaching the Fair Trading Act by the Commerce Commission.

Warning letters were sent to MyRepublic, 2degrees, Spark, and Vodafone by the Commission with specific allegations against each company. The letters follow the Commission’s promise that retail telcos would be a priority for the 2017/18 year.

UEM’s 69 percent owner, UEM Group Bhd, has already given an irrevocable undertaking to vote in favour of the offer, WSP said in a statement.

The offer is subject to due diligence of non-public information, which Opus says it will provide.

The company advised shareholders to take no action pending deliberations by a sub-committee of independent directors, who will appoint an independent adviser to assess the merits of the proposal.

Opus is scheduled to release its first-half results today. The Wellington-based company reported a loss of $29.9 million, or 20 cents per share, in calendar 2016, compared to a profit of $16.7m, or 11 cents, a year earlier.

WSP chief executive Alexandre L’Heureux said Opus will be able to “greatly leverage WSP’s customer base and strong international brand equity to significantly bolster its positioning and growth outside of New Zealand.”

At the same time, it would give WSP an opportunity to improve its presence and expertise in the Australia and New Zealand markets, particularly New Zealand, where Opus “has a leadership presence”.

The takeover documents say Opus shares “have performed significantly worse than the NZX 50 Index” over the past two years, with its performance negatively impacted by offshore challenges.”

It cited Opus’s 2016 earnings, which showed an earnings before interest and tax loss in Australia, Canada and the US and a drop in ebit in the UK. - NZME

Rakon shares jumped 20 per cent after the company said it anticipates a return to profit in the current financial year as new space and defence customers and recovering demand among telecommunications company’s bolsters the components maker’s revenue. The Auckland-based company predicts a positive net profit in the year ending March 31, 2018 with underlying earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of between $9 million and $11 million.

Retail rises in June New Zealand retail sales rose in the June quarter, benefitting from increased consumer spending during the World Masters Games and the Lions tour. Sales volumes gained 2 per cent in the three months ended June 30, 2017, following a 1.6 per cent rise in the March quarter, Statistics New Zealand figures show. The value of retail sales rose 1.6 per cent, compared to the record 2.5 per cent increase in the March quarter.

Freightways lifts profit Courier and information management company Freightways lifted annual profit on the strength of volume growth and margin in the express package and business mail division and said it’s targeting earnings growth for the current financial year. Freightways, which delivers around 50 million items annually through brands like New Zealand Couriers and Post Haste Couriers, reported a 22 per cent lift in net profit to $60.9 million in the year to June 30.

Heartland boosted Heartland Bank boosted annual profit 12 per cent as the country’s only locally-owned and listed bank managed to maintain relatively wide margins while expanding its loan book across all three of its main target sectors. Net profit rose to $60.8 million, or 12 cents per share, in the 12 months ended June 30 from $54.2 million, or 11 cents, a year earlier. That was in line with analysts’ expectations with First NZ Capital predicting profit of $60.2 million.

MARKET REPORT Dairy After a drier week, rains returned with a vengeance yesterday and soils returned to waterlogged levels.

Pasture covers are good on most farms, but managers are striving to push feed forward so plenty is available when the second rotation starts and milking cow numbers have grown to the maximum.

Reports suggest good compliance with the new bobby calf loading regulations as all in the sector work hard to improve animal welfare perceptions.

MPI reported that, after extensive testing, the mycobovis outbreak has been confined to two farms, but say it could take another two to three months before answers can be given on the cause of this outbreak.

Mataura Valley Milk looks for 25-30 suppliers for its nutritional formula milk plant being built in Gore as another competitor enters the milk processing market.

Lamb Export schedules continue to rise as processors compete hard for stock to fill chilled orders, but they report prices are peaking in Europe and the UK. As the main lambing season looms and these heavy rain periods continue, interest in lamb survival research reveals lambs with thicker skins cope the best in adverse weather conditions.

Alliance distributes its loyalty payments to its suppliers, which equates to around $1.80 per lamb, as this big processor uses its co-operative principles to create a point of difference.

They also report sheep and lamb skin prices are steady, but are held back by the high currency and the plants are receiving more longer-woolled animals as suppliers decide it is uneconomic to shear.

Local trade schedules lifted to a new high at 680c/kg cwt and some exceptional lambs are closing in on $200/hd at the saleyards.

Wallace Corporation have purchased Nichols tannery in Christchurch as they look to expand their influence into the South Island for lamb slink skins and casualty calves.

Wool There was a double island auction sale last week and still the market only had room for 80 per cent of the offering.

South Island wools eased in price and while the northern sale lifted from the previous sale, buyers are still paying a 20c/kg premium for southern wools.

A wider range of styles attracted more bids but still the coarse crossbred indicator languished at 273c/kg clean and the large supply of unsold stock is a concern for prospects with new season’s wool.

Beef More easing of beef schedules this week as manufacturing product in the US drops sharply and the strong currency and Japanese tariff issues reinforce that trend.

Local trade beef prices seem to have peaked and the saleyards are dominated by prime heifers with few finished steers being traded at present.

Ravensdown has announced a $45/tonne rebate after the third strong year in a row and report their environmental consultancy is the fastest growing service for the co-operative.

Labour’s water tax proposal has had Canterbury irrigators’ attention as they could face extra compliance costs on the significant debt already undertaken for this long-term investment.

Deer Venison schedules lifted again as the chilled European production season starts.

Arable survey indicates better days ahead The arable industry is optimistic and looking forward after a wet harvest and a period of market uncertainty.

In the latest Arable Industry Marketing Initiative (AIMI) survey, yields for the 2017 harvest are above average indicating a return to better fortunes for the country’s 2800 arable farmers.”

Looking ahead, the industry can take heart from this year’s final yields. The weather patterns were challenging but wheat yields were up 12 per cent, barley 8 per cent while the milling and feed oats have each returned 10 per cent increases,” says Federated Farmers’ arable chairman Guy Wigley.

“We are also seeing healthy interest from feed mills and those looking for animal feed, which places the industry in good shape as preparation for the 2018 harvest gets under way.

“Spring planting is expected to begin in North and Mid Canterbury over the next month and further south – if sodden ground dries out – in September.

“The majority of milling wheat and feed wheat crop had been planted, with only a third of barley crop sown. The survey also indicates confidence is high for future sowing and predicts a 13 per cent increase for the 2018 harvest.”

Feed barley is certainly on the rebound and is returning to normal areas with a 51 per cent increase likely compared to the 2017 harvest,” Wigley said.

The dairy industry revival was also a factor, with arable farmers returning to staple crops to meet demand.

“We encourage farmers who have planted milling wheat to get in contact with the flour millers to start a dialogue about the coming har-

vest,” he said. While there was reasonable tonnage of feed barley still available at the time of the survey (July 1), those in the market should be taking steps to secure grain before that surplus runs out.

“If you want to secure quality domestically produced grain, which is traceable, get in contact with your arable farmer.

Current trends are suggesting there may soon be no uncommitted grain left in farm silos, especially in Southland, North Otago and the North Island,” Wigley said.

Beef+Lamb welcomes freshwater funding The Government’s announcement of $44 million to support freshwater improvement projects has been welcomed by Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ).

B+LNZ chief executive Sam McIvor said that over the past two years, in particular, the organisation has responded to farmer demand for support in the environment space. “Through this work, we’ve identified that – while farmers want to take action – knowing where to start and what to prioritise can be a barrier.

“This government funding is timely and will help us better support farmers to deliver on their water quality ambitions.”

B+LNZ has secured Ministry for the Environment funding of $260,000 over three years. This will be used to work with farmers in four catchments around the country. Specifically, it will help farmers monitor water quality and develop farm plans that prioritise actions to reduce their farm’s impact on freshwater.

McIvor said B+LNZ is reviewing and

updating its environment vision, in response to growing farmer momentum.

“We are talking with farmers about sector and on-farm environment goals. It’s important we build collective ownership of what our environmental challenges are as a sector and the actions farmers can take to address them.

“Farmers are embracing their role in improving freshwater quality. At our environment conference this year, we asked farmers to pin notes on a map to outline all of the farmer-related environmental initiatives they were aware of. By the time that session was over, the map was completely covered.

“We can’t meet the current demand from farmers wanting to crack on and get stuff done on their farms and in their catchments.

“The injection of funding from the freshwater improvement fund will enable more work to be completed and on a greater scale.”

Cattle disease meeting well attended MPI’s progress in the response to the cattle disease Mycoplasma bovis was the focus of a well-attended public meeting in Waimate late last week.

Around 100 people turned out to hear MPI officials and a number of industry body partners outline the current surveillance and testing regime and timelines, the robustness of disease containment measures and the actions farmers can take to protect their farms.

MPI incident controller Evelyn Pleydell said there was no change to the number of properties with confirmed positive test results for Mycoplasma bovis, there still being two farms, both within the wider Van Leeuwen group of farms.

Pleydell said MPI’s Animal Health Laboratory at Wallaceville is currently in the process of testing more than 4600 samples of milk, blood and swabs from the 16 VLDG farms, neighbouring properties and other farms that we’ve found have received animals from VLDG farms.

“It’s a big job and good progress is being made. So far testing has been completed on 2068 samples and MPI is steadily passing result information to farmers,” she said.

“The testing process is complex and takes some time. Tests need to

be taken three or more times over three to four months before there is a definite result for each farm.

It is estimated that, based on current knowledge, testing will take 12-13 weeks to complete.”

A new type of test (ELISA) is being introduced that will speed things up but the lab is currently only applying it to higher risk more urgent testing as there is

an international shortage of the required Mycoplasma bovis test kits, Pleydell said.

“This is due to the unprecedented demand for the kits created by this MPI response. The specific test is infrequently used in other countries as most have established disease. The kit manufacturers are working with urgency to get us a further supply which

should be here within a fortnight.

“All this testing is to give MPI a picture of where the disease is present to help inform future management decisions. The main objective of all the activity is to eradicate the disease, if at all possible. But this is very dependent on how widespread it is.”

Part of last week’s meeting included reassurance for local

farmers about the rigour of MPI’s restrictions on the Van Leeuwen farms, Pleydell said.

On farm, Mycoplasma bovis is spread from adult animal to animal through close contact and bodily fluids – for example mucus and also milking equipment.

Calves can be infected through drinking milk from infected cows.

Off farm, the disease is mostly spread through movement of cattle. The existing movement restrictions on stock movement, along with cleaning and disinfecting vehicles on exit, are therefore the most appropriate measures to contain this disease.

Farmers at the meeting were encouraged to pay particular attention to standard biosecurity best practice including on-farm hygiene and care around the introduction of stock and other risk goods to the property.

Deer quality assurance standard agreed The five main companies that process and market New Zealand farmed venison have agreed on a single farm quality assurance standard.

Deer Industry NZ (DINZ) chief executive Dan Coup said the Deer QA on-farm standard, which has the support of the NZDFA and DINZ, will be delivered to farmers by the venison companies as part of their company QA programmes. It has also been included in the NZ Farm Assurance Programme for red meat producers.

“Having one standard for all will make it easier to tell our story and to make consistent promises that New Zealand venison is healthy, safe, natural and professionally farmed.

“This is especially important when our five major venison companies market venison under one appellation – Cervena.

“Deer QA is based on firm but fair standards and an independent audit. This makes it easier for us to champion the industry at home and to differentiate our venison and velvet from suppliers in countries that don’t have the same farming standards as us,” he said.

The on-farm standard is backed by wellestablished Deer QA programmes for deer transporters and venison processors.

Coup said this means that consistent QA standards are being applied along the venison production chain, from the farm to the marketplace.

“Many deer farmers are already involved in the on-farm QA programmes operated by venison, beef and sheep processors.

“For these farmers, the new Deer QA standard won’t mean any major changes in the way they do things, but if they supply livestock to more than one company, it may mean less duplication of audits in

Later this month, all deer farmers will be posted a letter and flier by DINZ, alerting them to the roll-out of Deer QA. This will be followed by a Deer Fact sheet, ‘Quality assurance on your deer farm’, enclosed with the August/September edition of Deer Industry News.

“Each venison company has its own time-frame for introducing its new or revised QA programme.

“I encourage deer farmers to ask their venison company rep when their new or revised QA programme will take effect and what it has to offer them,” Coup said.

Beef and potato-top bake Serves 4-5 Filling 800g - 1kg Quality Mark gravy beef, trimmed and cut into 6cm chunks 2C red wine (or use additional stock) 1 onion, chopped 4 cloves garlic, crushed 1 leek, finely chopped 400g button mushrooms, sliced 1C Campbell’s Real Stock - Beef 1/2 C tomato paste 1T dijon mustard 2 bay leaves 1 1/2 T cornflour mixed with 2T water Crunchy potato topping 1kg mashing potatoes, peeled and chopped 50g butter 1/2 C grated cheese 1/2 C breadcrumbs ■ Preheat the oven to 140°C conventional bake.

■ Filling: Heat a little oil in a large pan over a high heat. Add the beef in batches and brown all over, then transfer to a casserole dish. Add the red wine to the pan; let it bubble rapidly for 30 seconds and pour over the meat.

■ Return the pan to a medium heat

and add a dash more oil with the onion, garlic and leek and cook, stirring for 5 minutes. Add the mushrooms and cook for another 5 minutes. Add the stock, tomato paste, mustard, bay leaves and cornflour mixture. Stir to combine then pour over the meat in the casserole dish and stir. Cover and bake in the oven for 2.5 - 3 hours. Cool while your prepare the potatoes (remove the bay leaves).

■ Increase the oven temperature to 200°C conventional.

■ Crunchy potato topping: Place the potatoes in a large pot of cold water. Bring to a simmer and cook for 15-20 minutes or until tender. Drain and replace over a low heat for a minute to remove excess moisture. Mash briefly.

■ Stir the butter through and season to taste. Arrange spoonfuls on top of the meat mixture to cover.

■ Toss the breadcrumbs in a dash of oil and scatter over the potato with the cheese. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes until golden on top (you can grill for the last few minutes).

■ Serve with seasonal vegetables.

Pancakes from the tightrope?

I

spend many days scanning images. Most times they are relatively straightforward and easy to describe. Sometimes, however, an odd image catches my attention and demands investigation.

I came across an image taken from a family photo album and, at first, I didn’t think much of it and even debated whether it needed to be scanned. However, after I did, I discovered that it showed a tightrope walker. Now that is interesting.

Eventually I discovered that the man was James Alexander, an Australian who was described as the Australian Blondin.

Blondin was a French acrobat whose many feats included crossing the Niagara Falls on a tightrope.

Alexander sounds quite the performer, who rivalled the Frenchman in daring and outrageous stunts.

Not content to simply walk across a tightrope, he rode a bicycle, carried small children on his back, and unbelievable as it may sound, he even carried a little stove and cooked pancakes which he flung down to members of the audience.

Who was Alexander?

Tracing Alexander is a little complicated, as at the same time Henry L’Estrange was doing the same sort of stunts.

Historians ponder whether this was the same man, or two very similar acts? The term Blondin was used by many people. There was a female Blondin and at the St Stephen’s Church fair one year, there was even an Ashburton variety.

What we know for sure is that Alexander visited Ashburton a number of times.

The first time was in 1884, where he performed on three successive nights in January. He performed in the paddock opposite Beecher’s Central Hotel.

This attracted a great number of Ashburton’s public. So much so, that a travelling circus was poorly attended and hoped their season in Rakaia would be a more profitable one.

While he may not have made pancakes, he did carry out some of his routine, such as sitting on a chair in front of a table, standing on his head and walking with his feet in baskets. His Highland fling was accompanied by the Excelsior band

and red fire was used to add even more excitement to his show.

On his second night he carried an Ashburton lady across the tightrope. The Ashburton Guardian was impressed with his act, stating that he was “a funambulist second to none in the colonies”.

However, the paper “was not so pleased with the audience”, as when the collection boxes were opened there were more buttons than coins. Alexander would perform for free, but asked for donations.

The following nights were lucrative, with the Guardian further encouraging their readers to support the 24-year-old as he had been very unluckily of late. Possibly this comment might refer to two serious accidents – one where he fell after the rope he was balancing on appeared to have been cut and another where the main rope simply broke – both times his life was threatened, but yet he returned bolder than ever.

A weighty stunt Again, in 1887 he returned. This time the brass band accompanied his act, which was to include car-

rying the 15-stone proprietor of the Royal Hotel. However, it seemed that the publican (and later mayor) Henry Davis had lied about his weight. When the time came, Alexander decided he couldn’t carry out the stunt.

We don’t know whether the Royal Hotel hosted the event in 1887, but it certainly did in 1893.

At that time Alexander rode a bicycle and to supplement funds, sold for sixpence, “a very useful booklet full of valuable recipes etc”.

The final time Alexander visited our town was in 1902, no doubt when these images were taken.

Added to his act was a full fireworks display and Joey the clown.

Alexander himself rode a model horse 30 feet above the ground and then in an “amusing act” placed a bag over his head and rode back and forth on a bike.

For some reason the Monday night performance was relocated to Mona Square. Relocation was not the only setback, as a fight occurred between Alexander and Joey the clown who was wanting to be paid.

Windows and curtains in Prince Albert boarding house were damaged. It is not clear whether Joey

and Alexander continued working together.

James Alexander died in 1918 after suffering a heart attack while performing in Australia. While Australian sources mention his

visits to New Zealand, the team at Ashburton Museum here had no idea of his visits until I came across this image. One never knows what might turn up in this job!

Honouring the Fallen During the period of World War One, 1914 to 1915, many men from the Ashburton District signed up to fight for the Empire against the German army. Many did not return — almost 450 from Ashburton were killed. The first Ashburton men were killed on April 25, 1915 — the first Anzac Day. Ashburton philanthropist and patriot Frederick Ferriman presented a special flag and a flagpole to the families of those men. The Ashburton Museum with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Ashburton, has erected in front of the Museum one of the original Ferriman flagpoles, and on the centennial of the death of each Ashburton soldier will fly a replica flag. Lawson gets triples home The South Island may have proved no match for their North Island rivals, but South Island Indoor Bowls captain, Michael Lawson did come home with some silverware for his efforts.

After a week-long tour, which saw the Southern side trek from Wellington to Rotorua, playing nine provincial sides along the way, the South Island were beaten 32-16 at Rotorua Girls High School on Saturday.

However, Lawson’s men’s triples side managed to win their tie to claim the Inter-Island medal.

Representing his island for the 19th time, Lawson was forced to play a sublime bowl with his last effort of the day in the third match to force a drawn-end which saw his trio of himself, Southland’s Brian Hotton and Otago’s Daniel Sinclair edge past their rivals on a countback of ends won.

The South Island also claimed medals in the men’s singles and the women’s triples.

The men’s fours side, which

included Ashburton’s Matt Markham, were unable to complete a near-perfect week, losing their three-match set 1-2.

Prior to Saturday, the South Island side had an impressive week on the road – registering eight victories in their nine matches.

They won against North Wellington and Horowhenua combined, Hutt Valley, Bush Ruahine and Wairarapa combined, Wanganui, Manawatu, Hawke’s Bay, Poverty Bay East Coast and Bay Of Plenty while they suffered defeat at the hands of the strong Upper Hutt early in the tour.

Meanwhile on Sunday the Centennial Shield Championship Fours were held at the McNally Street Stadium with another victory for the Willowby club.

Ken Mackenzie, Graeme Chapman, Rowena Mackenzie and Neil Chapman emerged victorious in over Geoff Laird, Kevin Smith, John Cuthbertson and Bernice Laird.

Gold Coast chairwoman Rebecca Frizelle and CEO Graham Annesley have arrived at the NRL club’s Parkwood base ahead of crisis talks with coach Neil Henry and Jarryd Hayne. The Titans are seeking to mend relations between Henry and Hayne after the coach reportedly issued the club’s board with a ‘him or me’ ultimatum last week, claiming they could no longer work together. Warriors veteran Simon Mannering was surprised to learn about club owner Eric Watson’s plans to sell up, but admits change is needed to turn the struggling NRL franchise around. Watson has been in talks to sell the club to Auckland businessman Paul Davys, but said he was in no rush to do so. Mannering explained many of the Warriors players were in the dark about the potential change in ownership. “I don’t think everyone’s aware of it, to be honest,” said Mannering. - NZME

Nikorima gets the nod Ben Hunt has endorsed Kodi Nikorima as Brisbane’s long term halfback as he prepares for Friday night’s NRL clash with his future club St George Illawarra.

Hunt admitted he would rather start at No.7 but has backed Wayne Bennett’s decision to shift Nikorima to halfback for the rest of the season. Hunt is the Dragons’ $6 million man from next year but will line up against his future club at Suncorp Stadium on the bench as back-up hooker.

Interclub champions The Ashburton Squash Club are once again officially the best club in the top grade in this area – but not quite in the way they would have liked.

Over the course of a gruelling season Timaru were good enough to make the final against strong opposition from almost every club in the Midlands catchment, but on the night they couldn’t manage to field a team, leaving the unhappy Ashburton players to win a hollow victory by default.

There is a rule that every player in the finals must have played a minimum of four games throughout the season, but even with that rule waived Timaru couldn’t muster a team.

The division two Ashburton team didn’t have any such issues, and scored a dominant 12-2 victory over Hinds to take that title.

Division three was a much closer affair, with Collegiate and Celtic fighting out a close encounter.

After Celtic’s James McCloy took first blood in a marathon five-setter (saving a match point in the fourth), Collegiate’s Kurt Jemmett came back to beat Glen Ralston 3-1. Jimmy Hunn restored order for Celtic with a 3-1 victory, but a 3-0 win to Collegiate in the final match gave them the win, and the division three pennant.

In division four Mayfield proved too strong for their country counterpars Methven White, and took home the prize.

Battle is not over Western Force stars are shocked by the decision to cut their team from Super Rugby, but are sticking tight and believe the fight is not over. Winger Dane Haylett-Petty, one of six Force players in the Wallabies squad, said yesterday he was angry, confused and disappointed by the Australian Rugby Union’s decision last Friday to axe his team. Lock Adam Coleman said he and Haylett-Petty didn’t believe the battle to save the Force was over and neither did the rest of the WA rugby community. The Wallabies pair were speaking shortly after it was revealed RugbyWA had gained an injunction order against the ARU’s decision.

The Mid Canterbury A rugby side faced a tough start to their season in a 44-24 loss to Otago Country in a pre-season hit-out in Hinds.

Mid Canterbury coach Dale Palmer said it was disappointing that his side let the score run out to what it did.

“For a first hit-out it wasn’t too bad, but we have to work hard

on the basics and set pieces,” he said. “We have also got to look at some of the good stuff we did do.”

Palmer said while they had flashes of brilliance with the ball in hand, they would not be able to do that if they were not getting the basics right and retaining the ball.

“It comes down to the old cliché but it is right, you can do all

the fancy stuff but you have still got to do the basics right,” he said.

Dropping down in to the team from the Heartland squad were Gideon Lambrechts and Timoci Nabakeke, but Palmer said he expected that to be a one-off.

“It is our part to make sure those guys are fit to go for their season and get them playing some rugby and hopefully help

us with winning our competition,” he said.

Palmer said one disappointing thing to come out of the match was the defensive work they had been doing in training over the past few weeks had not really shown on the day.

“We will just now be building on what we have and will be ready to play in our competition,” he said.

Woodman dots down for eight tries Portia Woodman scorched across for eight of New Zealand’s 19 tries as they shredded Hong Kong 121-0 at the women’s Rugby World Cup in Dublin.

The flying winger was virtually unstoppable as the four-time champions unleashed their attacking flair against out-matched opposition.

Hong Kong had lost their opener 98-0 to Canada and their defence was prised open effortlessly by a New Zealand side coming off a 4412 win over Wales.

The Black Ferns threatened to eclipse their own record for the biggest win at the tournament, achieved when they crushed Germany 134-6 in Amsterdam in 1998.

It was the third time they have

raised a century at the tournament.

Woodman’s try haul at Billings Park is believed to be a tournament match record for a player.

Four of the flying winger’s tries came in the last 10 minutes as her pace simply left flagging defenders in her wake in long-range streaks to the tryline.

A humble Woodman had plenty of praise for her teammates.

“A little bit knackered. I think we were doing a conditioning session after a while. It’s all down to the girls on the inside.

“They’re working in the middle and I get all the glory at the end just to finish it off.”

“The score does reflect our work but for Hong Kong it doesn’t

reflect what they were doing.

“They worked hard on defence and attack and they just kept going right up to the 80th minute.”

Captain and hooker Fiao’o Faamausili enjoyed watching the entertainment unfold outside her.

“We used our wingers really well, we know we have speed out wide and we wanted to use it,” she said.

“Portia Woodman is amazing, she’s a sprinter and we’re always trying to catch up with her.”

Because of their massive points differential, New Zealand are virtually guaranteed a place in the tournament semi-finals, regardless of the result of their last pool game against world No.3 Canada on Thursday.

The Wallaroos are winless after conceding eight tries in their second group match in Dublin yesterday. They sit third in pool C after their narrow loss to host nation Ireland last week to begin their campaign. Australia’s attack was repeatedly undone by turnovers while the opposition benefited from the dominance of their forwards, completing 16 offloads to two. Inside centre Chloe Pelle scored tries either side of the break, while French flanker Romane Menager was named player of the match.

NZ silks ‘off colour’ A puzzling decision that forced expatriate Kiwi jockey Michael Walker to dress down for the occasion at Flemington on Saturday didn’t take the gloss off a New Zealand victory.

The Chris Waller-trained Alward impressively opened his Australian account for New Zealand syndication company Go Racing, but with Walker sporting the club’s silks.

“The stewards deemed that our colours were too close to those of Lloyd Williams, which was a bit odd, but hopefully Chris will be able to sort all that out now,” syndicate manager Albert Bosma said.

Alward’s success signalled a change of fortune for the fouryear-old, who is expected to make his mark in stakes company in the future.

“There’s a lot of upside to him, he’s a pretty smart horse,” Bosma said.

“Not many horses that can stay can sprint like that at the end of 2000 metres.

“We syndicated him in New Zealand and a couple of Australian owners have also bought into him.”

Alward’s victory continued Go Racing’s lengthy association with the champion Sydney trainer Waller.

“Chris was our very first trainer and we’ve been with him since he was here in New Zealand,” Bosma said.

Warrior Wanganui bound Lightly-raced gelding Inca Warrior is on a black type path. The Per Incanto three-year-old broke his maiden at Te Aroha on Sunday to book a trip to the central districts.

“His work had been outstanding so we went in with a lot of confidence,” trainer Steven Cole said.

“We’ll be heading to the Wanganui Guineas with him now.”

Sport Semenya wins 800m Caster Semenya ended the athletics world championships in London with victory, storming away down the home straight to claim the 800 metres gold medal. The South African backed up her Olympic title by powering home in a personal best one minute 55.16 seconds, the fastest time in the world for nine years.

The 26-year-old has been in the spotlight since first becoming world champion aged 18 in 2009, having been scrutinised for high levels of testosterone.

Better for the experience

The Mid Canterbury Combined Schools 1st XV wrapped up their season on Saturday with a 27-8 loss against Waimea Combined, but co-coach Gary McCann was more than happy with the performance from his side, labelling “fantastic”.

“We had five boys for which this would be their last game and the boys really rallied and lifted for that,” he said.

“They are a team that are in the top eight but we were very much in the game throughout.

“As the parents had been saying all this season, these are a group of boys that don’t give up and they proved that with a try right in last minute.”

As McCann has said through-

out the season, they always knew this was going to be a building year, with the squad ready to benefit in the coming years.

“There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that these boys are going to be better for the experience that they have had in 1st XV rugby this year,” he said.

“When you are losing only five at this stage out of 24 players, that is a big thing.”

McCann said one of the big aims coming in to this season was to create a great culture amongst the players with it being the first year of a combined team between Mount Hutt College and Ashburton College.

“The culture amongst these boys just gives you goose-pimples, the team is one to never

give-up and they fight to the death,” he said.

While they have not had much success on the field, only picking up one win against Roncalli Combined, McCann said there was always a positive attitude from the team, and always good turnouts to training.

Support for the side was strong throughout the year, with Ashburton College principal Ross Preece even flying to Nelson to watch the side play.

“There have been so many happy moment this season but the best things was seeing the joy on the boys faces after getting a win,” said McCann.

“At the last game the boys performed their haka and everybody shivered, it was special.”

While the job of a 1st XV coach

is not gifted, McCann said he hoped that him and fellow cocoach Simon Fleetwood had shown enough to carry on next year.

“Simon and I are dead-set keen to be selected next year.

“We have built some huge bricks and it would fantastic to get back at it,” he said.

On top of the win against Roncalli College, a narrow 13-15 loss to Lincoln High School and a 17-39 loss against Christ’s College where Mid Canterbury were leading at half-time were also the sides stand-out performances of the season.

The team eventually finished 13th on the UC Championship ladder, ahead of Roncalli Combined and Burnside High School.

Winning streak over Alexander Zverev’s hot streak is still alive. Roger Federer’s win streak is over. The 20-year-old German beat Federer 6-3, 6-4 in the Rogers Cup final yesterday for his 10th consecutive victory. Zverev, who won last week’s tournament in Washington DC, matched Federer with a fifth tournament title this year, although two of Federer’s triumphs were at majors.

He also stopped Federer’s win streak at 16. Zverev has now won 10 straight matches. He will try to keep it going at an event in Cincinnati this week.
