Allenton’s shopping centre is about to undergo a radical revamp, one that will, over the next few months, take it from shabby to chic.

One of the major property owners in the area, John McDonald, is currently faced with three vacant shops – a restaurant, fish and chip shop and the shop front of a butchery that now runs a processing business only.

Rather than sit back and wait for tenants to come to him, McDonald has hatched plans for a major redevelopment of those buildings including a new-look, new-style restaurant, a complete overhaul of the fish and chip shop and extensions and changes to the butchery shop front.

“Things are moving, the restaurant is going to be reopened as soon as possible, a lot of things are happening. The whole site will become a development site,” he said.

Plans are also under way to radically change the fish and chip shop once the restaurant opens.

Phase two will involve a redevelopment and extension of the butchery building to take advantage of the western aspect of the shops.

“This is the only area in town with great afternoon sun so obviously we’ll be taking advantage of this with our redevelopment.

It’ll be one big concept,” he said.

A major focus was to provide something the community wanted, something it would use and something that would have longevity, McDonald said.

While his project is still in the planning stages, two new businesses are opening in vacant spaces in the centre’s southern side.

Fire museum opens its doors

As the clock ticked over to 11am, the fire bell tolled and the fire flag was hoisted aloft, almost four years of work and planning, thousands of volunteer hours and donations from individuals, business and community groups were wrapped up in the opening of Ashburton’s Fire Museum.

It was a project that had absorbed the energies of the small team of people charged with taking the dream of a world class museum from drawing board to reality as well as the hundreds of others who contributed in ways large and small.

In a ceremony that was short on formality and long on emotion, master of ceremonies Peter McQuarters paid tribute to the people who were responsible for pulling together the dream of extending the fire museum in Tinwald’s Plains Village to ensure the largest collection of a single fire brigade’s memorabilia would have a fitting home.

The project was unique, McQuarters said in that it was completed within budget, and for a price that in many areas would only have covered the planning stages.

“We’re very hands on and a lot of people have dived into their pockets along the way,” he said.

The core group involved with the project from day one, Dave Eddington, Craig Wakelin, Jim Read and Larraine and Peter McQuarters were acknowledged for their tenacity and determination in battling

against the odds to raise the cash needed and to drive the construction of the extension, by Ashburton fire chief Alan Burgess.

“We knew we needed a dedicated group to drive this along and it’s a magnificent job they’ve done. This is the brigade’s heritage

and we’re extremely proud of this museum,” he said.

That such a comprehensive collection of old fire equipment was still in the district was a credit to firefighters of the past who saw value in ensuring that equipment was

kept and cared for, Burgess said.

Region four FENZ manager Paul Henderson said that out of the 177 stations in the region, if anyone was going to be able to pull this project off, it was Ashburton.

Chairman of the museum team, dubbed Greywatch, Dave Eddington applauded both the volunteers and the many sponsors who had provided the $250,000 plus needed to take the museum extension to where it is today.

“I was asked to lead this group and it took only a very short moment of contemplation to say yes,” he said.

Once a fire unit still soon to be decommissioned was added to the collection, it would cover the brigade’s equipment from 1874 through to 1992, Eddington said.

“We believe what we have today is the best private collection of any single fire brigade in New Zealand and possibly further afield.”

Sponsors were presented with certificates recognising their contribution to the project before the official ribbon was cut and guests were welcomed into the museum to view displays and to watch a video that told the brigade’s history and the development of the museum.

New-look skatepark launched Radical revamp

Skaters got the first opportunity to check out the new-look Ashburton Skatepark on Saturday at the Ashburton Skate Jam event.

The popular spot had been closed last week while influential and renowned Christchurch artist, Wongi Wilson, worked his magic on the surrounds of the park ­bringing some new colour and a fresh new look to the well-used area.

The latest design is based on inspiration from young members of the Ashburton community who were invited to submit their ideas for the work at the Ashburton Art Gallery earlier in the year.

On Saturday, organisers combined with Cheapskates Skate Skool to host the skate jam which saw skating enthusiasts both young and old turn out to check out Wilson’s work and get some advice from the professionals on hand.

New Zealand’s longest running learn-toskate programme provider, Cheapskates provided gear for people to use and instructors kept an eye on proceedings around the park and offered tips and advice to those in attendance.

Speaking ahead of the event last week, Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel said the skatepark played an important role within the community. “The skatepark is a great space for young people and families to hang out and keep active,” she said.

October election steps into new territory

The landscape for potential candidates in this year’s October local body elections changed dramatically on Friday with the confirmation of a cut to councillor numbers.

The Local Government Commission upheld a request from the council that councillor numbers be cut from 12 to nine. This will see the number of urban councillors reduced to five from seven and those in the eastern ward from three to two. The western ward remains unchanged at two.

In 2016 13 people stood for sev-

en seats in the urban ward. One of those was Donna Favel who was withdrawn when she won the mayoralty. That left 12 vying for seven seats.

The successful seven in order of votes gained were Leen Braam, Alasdair Urquhart, Russell Ellis, Neil Brown, Diane Rawlinson, Thelma Bell and Selwyn Price. If that election had been held this year with the same candidates, Bell and Price would not have made the cut.

In the eastern ward four candidates sought three seats and in vote count order they were Lynette Lovett, Stuart Wilson and Mark Malcolm. Under the new

numbers Malcolm would have been unsuccessful.

Nominations open for this year’s elections on July 19 and while no current councillors have made a definite commitment to standing for re-election, three have indicated they will not or are unlikely to stand again – Peter Reveley, Alasdair Urquhart and Mark Malcolm’s names are all unlikely to be on this year’s ballot papers.

Along with a reduction in candidate numbers, the council also wanted minor ward boundary changes and these were also approved.

The most significant of these is

the inclusion of Lake Hood and the Tarbottons Road area in the urban ward.

Changes between eastern and western wards were made to create a better population balance between each.

The change in councillor numbers went through a community consultation process last year and while most submitters supported the change a handful did not.

Two of those wanted to appear at a Local Government Commission hearing to support their opposition to the change.

The commission upheld the council’s request.

One of the owners, Zalie Doyle, described it as a multi-faceted business where the three partners were all qualified and experienced in their own fields.

They’re passionate about educating and supporting mothers and children. Doyle and business partner Annie Vinte have been running the business from home, but decided the time was right to step up, bring in car seat sales and fitting expert Kirsty Williams and open a store in the Allenton shopping centre.

Their store, however will be much more than just retail. The women are drawing on their own training and experience to offer early parenting classes, breastfeeding advice and ante natal support.

“We wanted to create a hub for families, a place where families could come to get a quiet space.

We’re not just education, we’re not just retail, every person involved in this is qualified and passionate about the support we provide,” Doyle said.

The Stork Network will be a place, not just for parents of young children. A coffee machine on site will turn it into a mini-cafe for the community, she said.

And a few doors west another new business is about to open its doors, an R18 retail outlet that will be selling tobacco and tobacco replacement products. Its owner Mark Swaney also owns Hecs Wholesale.

The shop is wrapped in mirror glass and will trade under the name cloudnine ashburton. It’s trade is described above its doors as Vape, Tobacco, Cigars, Accessories.

Mosque open day a success

When Ashburton’s proud Muslim community opened their doors to the public yesterday, just what support they would be shown was very much up in the air.

But within the first hour of the gates of the Ashburton Masjid opening at lunchtime yesterday any reservations that were hovering around were comfortably put to one side with big numbers of locals flocking to the mosque in a sign of solidarity alongside the Muslim community.

Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon, who helped facilitate the event alongside local Muslim leaders, said the entire event was special.

“It was really special to see so many people turn out to support and learn more about our local Muslim community,” Falloon said.

“Their generosity at what still must be a difficult

time is remarkable.”

The occasion was marked by the planting of two new gardens which will be a lasting tribute to those who lost their lives and serve as a reminder about how the community came together in such tragedy.

Mega mast another reason to continue GE research Turning our backs on promising tools for predator control is a massive disservice to New Zealand’s native flora and fauna.

That’s the opinion of Federated Farmers environment spokesperson Chris Allen who said that the spreading of 1080 was by no means perfect, nor was it certain that it would always be available.

“The ‘mega mast’ in New Zealand’s forests this autumn presents a huge challenge to our pest control agencies and countless

volunteers,” Allen said.

“The frequency of these exceptionally heavy tree seeding events is likely to increase with climate change, yet this coalition Government has called a halt on research on genetic engineering technologies.”

The Department of Conservation is planning its biggest ever 1080 and trapping response (a $38 million programme covering about one million hectares) to try and combat the plague of rats,

stoats and possums that will feast on our native birds, bats, lizards, insects and trees when the plentiful seeds run out.

“Spreading 1080 is acknowledged by scientists and thinking New Zealanders as the best tool we currently have in our fight to protect our biodiversity, but it’s by no means perfect nor will its availability continue to be guaranteed,” Allen says.

Rapidly advancing genetic engineering techniques could well

offer us much more effective pest control tools, as well as new ways of limiting greenhouse gases.

New Zealand needs to get on with the job of proving if the technology can do the job effectively, with no unintended consequences.

We should be doing this research now to prove to New Zealanders there is another way to defeat pests, and to foster well informed public debate on the safety and other aspects of GE, Chris says.

“Instead, this government

seems to be letting ideology overrule science. Conservation Minister Eugenie Sage has not rescinded her instructions to Predator-free NZ to not be involved in any research to do with GE organisms and technologies such as CRISPR and gene editing.

“This is unhelpful, head-inthe-sand stuff. I can’t see NZ making a big leap toward meeting predator free aspirations or our climate obligations with this government’s approach.”

With the resignation of principal John Schreurs last month from Mount Hutt College, a temporary leader of the Methven School has been appointed.

Kris Canham, who is currently one of the school’s deputy principals, has been appointed acting principal for the college for terms two and three.

Kaylib Gorrie will continue in a deputy principal position.

To ensure a strong senior leadership team, three of the schools current HOFs/Deans will share responsibilities in an assistant principal capacity during this period.

Continuity of senior NCEA curriculum programmes has been a priority in the planning to manage this time of change, school board chairman Richard Fitzgerald said.

A long-term relieving teacher will join the Mount Hutt College teaching team in the areas of social studies, art and English.

Thousands flock to concert Thousands of people headed to Auckland’s Spark Arena for Saturday night’s Christchurch benefit event You Are Us/Aroha Nui. The sold-out event boasted a star-studded line-up, including Anika Moa, Bic Runga, Dave Dobbyn and Marlon Williams.

A second event, with a slightly different line-up, is happening in Christchurch on Wednesday night.

Singer-songwriter Lorde is performing at the Christchurch event, but couldn’t make Saturday night’s show.

Proceeds from both events will go to Lianne Dalziel’s Our People, Our City fund, established to help raise money to support the families and Muslim communities impacted by the Christchurch shooting.

Promoter Brent Eccles worked together with Mark Kneebone, from Live Nation, to make the two charity gigs happen.

Eccles said inspiration largely came from the artists. Many had approached him directly, asking what they could do to help.

He received a text from Lorde some time after the two shows were announced.

“She said, ‘Hey, I can’t do Auckland but I can come back and do Christchurch’,” Eccles recalls.

In brief Fire chief collapses The fire chief of the Upper Rakaia volunteer fire brigade was yesterday airlifted to hospital after collapsing at training. Fortuitously, that training happened to be first-aid lessons being carried out by St John ambulance staff.

Southern Fire and Emergency NZ shift manager Mau Barbara said a helicopter was called to the station yesterday morning. Barbara said they had the appropriate St John staff on hand to help the fire chief as they waited for the chopper to arrive. A St John spokeswoman confirmed they transported one patient to Christchurch Hospital in a moderate condition. The Upper Rakaia rural fire brigade is part of the rural firefighting force based up at Double Hill Station, near Mt Hutt, west of Christchurch.

Yvette Williams dies aged 89 Hot air

NZME 1952 Olympic gold medallist Yvette Williams has died aged 89.

Williams, who became the first woman to win a gold medal for New Zealand when she won the women’s long jump in Helsinki, died last night.

She wrote her name into New Zealand’s Olympic history books when she won a gold medal for long jump at the 1952 Helsinki games, becoming our first female Olympic champion.

Williams’ mark of 6.24m was also an Olympic record – and two years later she leaped a further 4cm to break the women’s long jump world record.

“Yvette Williams was a trail blazer and a true beacon of what is possible for women in sport,” said New Zealand Olympic Committee President, Mike Stanley.

“She was a truly humble New Zealander who was deeply passionate about sport and young athletes.

“Her place in New Zealand’s history is unique and her contribution to sport has opened doors.

She was a treasured member of the New Zealand team and is one of our greatest ever athletes, she will be missed by all who knew her.”

A natural athlete, the Dunedin-born sportswoman played netball and basketball before she was introduced to athletics. Her first national title was in shot put, before she turned her attention to long jump.

In the lead-up to the Helsinki Olympics, Williams was living in Auckland, where she would start her day with an hour of callisthenics before heading to work in the city as a secretary, where she would spend her lunch breaks training, running up and down the hills of central Auckland.

After work, she would reportedly train for another three hours.

Williams returned to Auckland after her Olympic win to a hero’s welcome, with a homecoming tour that included a visit to Parliament House to

“As we headed through the South Island, lots of children and parents stood roadside waving flags and giving me bunches of flowers,” Corlett told the Herald.

“Finally we arrived in Dunedin, where they had organised an open-top car to drive down the main street lined in bunting. At the Town Hall, I dreaded making a speech. I preferred performing on the track and in the field.”

In 1956, Williams retired from competition but continued to coach athletics and went on to actively work with Special Olympians.

In 1990, she became one of the first people inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame – officially recognised as one of New Zealand sport’s original trailblazers.

A hot air balloon pilot and his passengers have walked away unscathed after crashing into a power pole and tree.

The balloon hit a power pole in Swarbrick Park, in the Hamilton suburb of Dinsdale, about 7.45am yesterday.

Witness Nicole Harvey was on her balcony taking photos of the balloon as it made its descent when there was a “bang”.

She said the sound was like fireworks going off. She started filming as the balloon was secured and brought down to the ground.

Pilot Mark Brown said he was thankful nobody was injured in the crash and proud of how his passengers stayed calm as he got people on the ground to help free the balloon from the pole and tree.

“No one was hurt and we lifted it off the pole and put it back down on the ground again.

“Everything was fine, the passengers were really great and it was just one of those days.”

The incident had been reported to the Civil Aviation Authority, but as there were no injuries it would only incur “a reprimand”, he said.

One person died in a single-vehicle crash in Waimate district early yesterday. The vehicle crashed into a power pole on Waimate Highway, Makikihi, about 4.15am.

The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Meanwhile, one person is in a serious condition after a single-car crash in Oamaru at 5.41am yesterday. St John ambulance staff said one patient was taken to Dunedin Hospital.

Identity confirmed Police have confirmed the identity of a body in a Rotorua stream yesterday. A police media statement said the person has been identified as a 62-year-old Rotorua man. The man’s death will be referred to the Coroner. A reporter at the scene said the body had been removed and all the police cordons taken down. The man’s body was found in Puarenga Stream in Rotorua by a member of the public yesterday. Police were notified just after 8am.

US concerts Performers in the United States will next week show their solidarity with Christchurch in the aftermath of the mosques massacre, with two charity concerts. Brooke Fraser, Gin Wigmore and other New Zealand artists will perform at one or other of the two concerts, to be held on opposite sides of the US. One will be held at in the east, at the White Eagle Hall in New Jersey on Wednesday at 7pm US eastern time, and the other at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles on Thursday night. The two benefit events are part of the You Are Us/Aroha Nui series that began with the Spark Arena concert in Auckland on Saturday night and which is to be followed by the second concert, at Christchurch, on Wednesday. Proceeds from all four events will go to Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel’s Our City, Our People fund, set up to raise money to support the families and Muslim communities.

Man dies in shooting AP Police have released excruciating details of a shooting outside a Melbourne nightclub at the weekend, describing the injuries as horrific.

A 37-year-old man has died after being shot outside a Melbourne nightclub, police have confirmed.

The shooting occurred outside the venue, the Love Machine nightclub, in Prahran about 3.20am yesterday.

Police confirmed four people had been transported to hospital, where Aaron Khalid Osmani, from Narre Warren South, who had “life threatening injuries”, later died, news.com reports.

AP Julian Assange spent seven years at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London and it cost the South American country nearly $10 million.

Ecuador’s foreign minister Jose Valencia has detailed the money spent by the country to keep the 47-year-old WikiLeaks founder safe since August 16, 2012, when he first arrived at the embassy.

Most of the $10m (about $8.7m) was spent on his security.

Ecuador also spent $590,000 on medical expenses, food and laundry for Assange. Another $445,000 was spent providing legal advice for him.

Assange was arrested last week after Ecuador withdrew his diplomatic asylum.

He had reportedly been paying for his own upkeep since the beginning of December last year.

The government of Ecuador said the money spent on Assange could have funded 155 state houses, 88 community schools and a health centre.

After seven years holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy, Julian Assange finally outstayed his welcome, says the Telegraph’s Harry de Quetteville.

In the end, he was right about one thing.

Assange, who entered Ecuador’s cramped embassy in London in 2012, once predicted his time there would last “five to seven years”.

Many tales have been told of his appalling manners: how he ate with his hands and rarely showered, of his “many casual libels, sexist or anti-Semitic remarks”, and his failure to clean up after the cat he kept there.

A large, flightless bird native to Australia and New Guinea killed its Florida owner when it attacked him after he fell, authorities said.

The Alachua County Fire Rescue Department told the Gainesville Sun that a cassowary killed the man at the weekend on his property near Gainesville, likely using its long claws.

The victim, whose name was not released, was apparently breeding the birds, state wildlife officials said.

“It looks like it was accidental. My understanding is that the gentleman was in the vicinity of the bird and at some point fell. When he fell, he was attacked,” Deputy Chief Jeff Taylor told the newspaper.

Cassowaries are similar to emus and stand up to 1.8m tall and weigh up to 60kg, with black body feathers and bright blue heads and necks.

The San Diego Zoo’s website calls cassowaries the world’s most dangerous bird with a 10cm, dagger-like claw on each foot.

“The cassowary can slice open any predator or potential threat with a single swift kick. Powerful legs help the cassowary run up to 50km/h through the dense forest underbrush,” the website says.

Cassowaries are not raised for food in the US, but are sought after by collectors.

To get the mandatory permit, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission requires cassowary owners to have “substantial experience” and meet specific cage requirements, spokeswoman Karen Parker told the newspaper.

Wildlife officials did not answer phone calls and it could not be learned what happened to the bird.

Angelina Jolie is reportedly determined to win back estranged husband Brad Pitt, which is why their divorce has dragged out so long. According to the Sun, Brad has turned down the idea of a romantic reconciliation, but still wants to stay on good terms for the sake of their six children. A source said: “Angelina has made it clear to Brad that she wants to be back in a relationship with him. She would like them to be a family again and doesn’t seem capable of moving on.

That’s why she is making it so difficult for Brad with every detail of their divorce.”

New cast member Much-loved Kiwi soap Shortland Street is featuring its first actor with Down Syndrome – adding to the show’s track record of diverse casting and storylines.

Wellingtonian Jacob Dombroski Jacob Dombroski is appearing on the show as a guest cast member for three episodes, the first of which will air on April 29. His character Winston will appear as the younger brother of Lincoln and Prince Kimiora. Dombroski, who was born with Down Syndrome, described the character as “nice, chatty and always open hearted”. He’s a lifetime fan of Shorty Street, and has long dreamt of landing a role on the show.

Singing star coming to town Australia’s brightest new singing star will be rolling in the deep and saying no to rehab when she comes to town.

Bloom is emerging singer songwriter Amanda Canzurlo, and she is set to bring the songs of the two blockbuster artists Adele and Amy Winehouse to the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on May 1.

Bloom will be backed by an all-star band that features James Morley, former member of The Angels and current member of the Choirboys, as well as members of the late Jon English Band.

The Adele and Amy Songbook has recently returned from a sell-out North Island regional tour through Palmerston North, Napier and Wellington, and will now come to Ashburton and other South Island venues.

Bloom has found the songs of Adele and Amy Winehouse to suit her smooth deep vocals perfectly.

She has just returned from shows featuring John Farnham, John Paul Young, The Chantoozies, Eurogliders and many more, and has received accolades from some of Australia’s most successful artists with her voice.

“There has to be four octaves there, she has perfect pitch, she has a powerful voice, a beautiful presence and she has incredible work ethic,” said Tottie Goldsmith of The Chantoozies.

“The heart, integrity and skill are clearly apparent in this fine lady. It is a pleasure to sing with her and a delight to listen,” said Lindsay Field of the John Farnham Band.

Slow and steady wins the race I

n a perfect world, the entire Ashburton District would be a buzzing hive of activity with successful business, full restaurants and profitable stores across the plains.

There would be no stress about when the next customer was going to walk in the door, or how many tables need to be filled in a night to ensure that costs are met.

Life would be good. Thriving.

Happy. Successful.

If only it was true.

The cold hard face of it is that we are a long way away from being anywhere near that.

Unfortunately there are shop windows that sit empty and stagnant and businesses that are forced to redirect their models, or

at worst close their doors.

And there’s not an awful lot that we as a community can do about it.

Yes, we can shop local and support those from within the community who are trying to make a living, but even that only goes so far.

What we can do though is chip away at the problem and slowly

but surely, step by step we might start to make a bit of progress.

It’s really disheartening to walk past buildings like the old roast shop on East Street and see it still in the same dishevelled state that it was when the owners walked out the door for the last time.

But equally it’s encouraging to see some new business crop up in different parts of the Ashburton CBD, the wider township and ultimately the entire district.

Rome wasn’t built in a day - we know that much to be true, but inch by inch you’ll make a little progress and things can eventually turn around.

It’s really encouraging to hear the news of the Allenton precinct gaining a few new shop fronts

with some new business rolling into the area. That part of town has been a worry for quite some time now and to hear that three new businesses are set to join will be a really positive step forward into the rejuvenation project of the whole shopping area.

And the best part is that there is some new ideas in among all the action too.

There’s a reason why the traditional restaurant hasn’t worked there in the past, don’t ask what the reason is, but there has to be one there somewhere.

So, something a little bit different from what’s been tried before is a good thing.

Let’s just hope that what comes into the mix can be successful

and help breathe some new life into the Allenton area.

On face value, there might not seem to be much around ­but when you wander around the area you notice that it’s got a little bit of everything really and it should suit everyone’s needs and requirements.

Allenton isn’t the only example either, Methven is quietly chipping away in the background too with a real focus on getting more people into the heart of the township, the Mall and returning it to it’s previous glory of being a full shopping mall with stores in every window.

So it can be done.

But not quickly, it will take time.

Policies won’t help our small businesses N

inety-seven per cent of the businesses in New Zealand are small businesses but the current Government seems oblivious to the realities of their day to day operations.

For example, the Government’s changes to the Employment Relations Act will come into effect next month and will require employers to allow staff to have a 10-minute break after two hours of work and a 30 minute break after four hours, unless the employee agrees to a different arrangement.

While it is probably easy enough for a large manufacturing business with over 20 staff to roster staff breaks in such a way, the legislation fails to take into account the practicalities of set breaks for small businesses.

For many small businesses, they may only have enough clients to justify one staff member being rostered on at certain times and it would be unworkable to employ another staff member just to cover breaks.

As a result, the business may have to close its doors during break times, inconveniencing customers.

A modern employment relationship should be about give and take – what people are asking for more and more these days when juggling work and family commitments is flexibility – and a prescriptive, inflexible approach to rest and meal breaks does not fit with the realities of the modern workplace.

In addition to the change to the law around rest and meal breaks, the Government has recently implemented a significant increase to the minimum wage of an extra $1.20 per hour

effective from the April 1, which will place another burden on small businesses.

Meanwhile, the Tax Working Group’s proposals for a comprehensive Capital Gains Tax would take away the current encouragement for innovators and start-ups to take a risk with their idea and set up a new business.

While those in favour of a Capital Gains Tax claim it is an issue of fairness, how is it fair for those who run small businesses out of their family homes to have to choose between claiming for business expenses such as internet and electricity usage or paying tax on the family home when they sell it, when everyone else is exempt from paying tax on the sale of their family home?

The reality is that most small business owners are not “rich”.

When you factor in the weekend hours they spend doing their invoices and accounts and the evenings spent scheduling jobs for staff for the next day, often the business owner is earning little more than those they employ.

The Government needs to remember that small business owners provide jobs for nearly 30 per cent of our workforce and act as the tax collector for the Government by filing and paying PAYE on behalf of their employees.

Small business owners are telling me that they are already stretched to their limit, struggling to find skilled workers, and keeping up with legislative changes relating to employment, health and safety and taxation.

If the Government decides to tax them on the sale of their family home and their business, they may well decide it is not worth the effort.

An authentic experience NZME

I

was in Nepal for three weeks.

It felt like a lifetime, yet nowhere near long enough.

Clearly this land, its people and the undeniable energy of the Himalayas has done a number on me.

I feel a rush arriving in a country that is so different. I have to engage my instincts, with the chaos of new sights, sounds and smells teaching me to swim in foreign currents.

Nepal’s history is vast and you can feel it the moment you set out. There is no denying the deep-rooted traditions that challenge the population as urbanisation sweeps through communities, mixing the old with the new.

I feel a sense of sadness for the loss of connection to self, tribe and environment in the modern world yet somehow at first glance, the people of Nepal have maintained identity throughout the ever-changing tides.

A long-standing friend is the catalyst for this trip. This glorious woman works in the NGO (non-governmental organisation) field and has called Kathmandu home for the past few years. Her place is my landing pad and a way to experience Nepal away from the usual visitor hot-spots.

Throughout the first few days we walked the side streets of Jawalekhel. From street vendors and hole-in-the-wall family stores to temples and ancient town squares. Old and fading to bright shiny and new, Hindu, Buddhist and revolutionary artworks and engravings are on display around every corner.

The streets close in so tight that it’s a wonder any vehicle can snake through the crowds.

These daily strolls start to paint a picture of old Kathmandu and a psychedelic history begins to unfold.

The history of religion and way of life here is a whole other fascinating direction, but most recently Nepal, home to wild-growing “Kush” cannabis, was a haven for those who shunned the imposing expectation of conven-

The ’60s and ’70s were quite literally a hit in Kathmandu.

Artworks and quotes pay tribute to Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and every other philosophising, society-challenging artist.

Thamel became a centre of visionary, unconventional creation.

As it teemed with seekers from all over the world, the energy must have been quite something; it still echoes throughout the streets today.

Coinciding with the counter-culture on the other side of the world, the US and other governments put pressure on Nepal to criminalise cannabis. Now it is legal to smoke hashish only during celebrations of Lord Shiva

on Maha Shivaratri.

Forty-five minutes out of Kathmandu is Kopan. Its monastery opens daily for visitors to experience the grounds and observe Buddhist monks and students in their daily practice.

Outside of retreat bookings, the monastery is open for visitors to stay a couple of times a year and I happened to be in luck.

Over the years, Kathmandu has edged its way towards the outlying hills. It means that what used to be a much quieter region, now grapples with a combination of working farmland, housing developments, numerous private monasteries, and an airport in the distance, all topped off with a peaceful retreat at the top of a

hill. The contrast is epic.

Whether it be Kopan or a rural monastery further out in the peace and calm, taking a look into life of the modern Buddhist monk in practice goes hand in hand with the Nepali experience.

Kopan offers a place for the curious to investigate, where more private monasteries can operate away from interruption.

My final day in Kathmandu began with a visit to the grounds of the Pashupatinath temple. On the banks of the Bagmati river, this place of worship is marked a world heritage site, where visitors can really experience deep-rooted Hindu customs and traditions.

There are 518 temples on more than 250ha and the river hosts

cremations daily.

This could be confronting to some but the grounds of Pashupatinath offer a true insight into Hindu belief and practice.

As it is one of the most important temple grounds in Nepal, its inner courtyard is off limits to visitors and even practising Hindus from other parts of the world.

The ever-present litter scattered about is a sad reminder of how huge an impact modern life has had on even the most sacred of places.

When you are moving about the grounds alone, however, the presence of yogis, blessings and history, will give you experiences that will be brought up in conversation for years to come.

Swimmers eye up national titles

Four young Ashburton swimmers are off to Wellington this week to compete against New Zealand’s best swimmers in their age groups.

Wellington is this week hosting the 2019 National Age Group Swimming Championships and among the swimmers set to take to the starting blocks over what is set to be a tough few days in the water are Ashburton Swim Team

members Bree Middleton, Blake Farr, Hannah King and Mitchell Veix.

For Veix and King, both 13, it will be their first time competing at a national championship, and all four Ashburton swimmers have had to produce top swims already this season in order to qualify to be eligible to compete at the national level.

Veix’s main focus will be butterfly. He’s set to swim in the 50m, 100m and 200m butterfly, with

the 400m individual medley also added in.

King will hit the water in the 200m breaststroke, the 400m individual medley, and the 800m and 400m freestyle, while Farr, 15, is focused solely on freestyle, competing over the 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m, and 1500m distances.

Middleton, 15, is also a freestyler and she’ll compete over 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m.

It was over the 100m distance

where Middleton won bronze at the Victorian State Championships in Australia in December.

Ashburton swim team coach Shane Jones’ hopes for all four of his young charges at the national age group champs, are for them to swim new personal bests and make finals.

It is set to be a huge event, with 734 of the best age group swimmers from around the country set to come together for five intense days of competition where club,

regional and national honours are at stake.

Action is set to get under way tomorrow in Wellington and it will run until Saturday. It will follow a format of heats in the mornings and finals in the late afternoon.

Along with the hundreds of swimmers, around 200 coaches and more than 300 supporters are expected to converge on the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre in Kirbirnie for the big week of swimming.

Ashburton rowers claim gold

Two young Ashburton Rowing Club members have returned from the New Zealand University Rowing Championships with a golden glow.

Haxby Hefford and Grace Wilson have both left school but have kept up their rowing while studying at Otago University,

and at the weekend’s New Zealand University Rowing Championships at Lake Karapiro they showed they were both still a force to be reckoned with on the water.

Hefford won three golds, including in the men’s varsity single sculls.

He also teamed up with Corey Lewis to take gold in the double

sculls, and with Lewis, Dylan Davis, Daniel Ward and cox Henry Shaw to take gold in the coxed quad.

Hefford was also part of the Otago coxed men’s eight which came fifth.

Wilson also finished the regatta with three podium finishes, taking two golds and a silver.

Wilson was part of the Otago

coxed women’s eight which won gold, and took gold in the coxed quad sculls along with Hannah Coulter, Sophie Thompson, Haylee Budd and cox Lauren Gibb.

Wilson also teamed up with Budd to contest the double sculls and the duo came second.

The New Zealand University Championship regatta was raced over Friday and Saturday.

Warriors let a golden opportunity slip

Blake Green’s fitness will be assessed over the coming days – as the Warriors hope that the injury that ruled him out of Saturday’s 28-24 to the Rabbitohs isn’t a serious one.

Green was a last minute withdrawal after picking up a groin strain during the warm-up, leaving utility Peta Hiku and rookie Chanel Harris-Tavita as the halves.

With two games in the next 12 days, including the annual Anzac day trip to face the Storm, the Warriors can’t afford to have Green sidelined for a prolonged period.

“He had a sore groin,” said coach Stephen Kearney.

“What that means we will have to wait and see. We will get some

scans and go from there.”

Kearney said Green had trained untroubled in the buildup to the game, and even after pulling up sore in the warm up, his participation was being debated minutes before kickoff.

“He was pretty keen to [play] but we didn’t want to take unnecessary risks,” said Kearney.

“It was pretty unrealistic anyway … I don’t think he was ever a chance.”

The Warriors coped reasonably well in the circumstances, with Harris-Tavita showing his potential as he took on the mantle of chief playmaker, but the team missed Green’s composure and organisation in the final quarter.

Holding a 24-12 lead with 18 minutes to play, the Warriors couldn’t manage the situation and lost their way completely.

They barely completed a set during that time, inviting constant pressure, and allowing the Rabbitohs to find their groove again.

It didn’t help that hooker Issac Luke was also off the field – concussed after a nasty high shot – and things began to unravel.

“It’s the nature of this competition … you have to finish things off,” lamented Kearney.

“The frustrating and disappointing part for us is that we worked really hard to get ourselves into position but we weren’t smart enough to close it out.

“We couldn’t manage the back end of the game.”

The coach was left to rue a final quarter where everything that could go wrong, did, allowing the South Sydney side to find some momentum, after Wayne

Bennett’s team had looked out of sorts at times during the match.

“It was pretty simple,” said Kearney of the last 20 minutes.

“I think we had seven sets with the footy and we completed one.

You just can’t do that.

“We had an error off a scrum, an error on halfway with Adam Blair, we had Roger [Tuivasa-Sheck] passing the ball over the sideline to Ken, and a seven tackle set off the attempted drop goal.”

It’s a defeat that will sting.

Knocking off one of the premiership favourites would have been a massive boost, but the Warriors are left to wonder what might have been.

On the plus side, the team looked like a genuine NRL team again, after disappearing into some weird vortex during rounds two and three.

Steve Kerr preached to the Golden State Warriors to not “take the bait.”

The bait being Patrick Beverley.

Stephen Curry scored 38 points and made eight 3-pointers to give him the most in postseason history, and the top-seeded Golden State Warriors began their quest for a three-peat by running away from the frustrated Los Angeles Clippers for a 121-104 victory in their playoff opener yesterday on a night tempers flared.

Kevin Durant and Beverley were ejected with 4:41 to go, just 19 seconds after they received double-technicals when Durant stripped Beverley and the Clippers guard fell into the scorer’s table.

They both became enraged again and official Ed Malloy immediately sent them both to the locker room. Durant highfived fans as he exited and the home crowd went into chants of “Beat L.A.!”

Durant said Beverley has a “different type of grit” coming from Chicago.

“You know what he’s going to bring to the table, just the physicality, mucking up the game a little bit with his physicality, his talking, everything.

“That’s what he brings to each team he plays on. That’s his identity,” Durant said.

“For me, I know that coming into the series. I thought it was fun tonight.”

Like Durant, Beverley said he had fun.

“I got pushed, I got up and I got ejected. I guess the refs, I guess he saw something that I don’t know,” he said.

“But that’s all right. I give them a lot of credit.”

Perhaps this old, heated rivalry still has all the testiness of years past – just with new faces all around.

Curry shot 8 for 12 from deep to pass Ray Allen (385) for career postseason 3s with 386, had a postseason career-high 15 rebounds, seven assists and the 31st 30-point postseason performance of his career.

“To be in the same category and to pass a guy like Ray Allen and all the iconic moments he’s had in playoff games and finals games, it’s pretty surreal,” Curry said.

“Definitely honored and grateful for those opportunities. I always joked, if I shoot a lot of 3s I better make a lot of them.”

On one of his marvelous 3s, the two-time MVP knocked one down from way back late in the third, nearly did the splits in the air and landed on his back side – still smiling all the while.

“Curry has destroyed us all year,” Rivers said.

Defending champs taken down

Beating Waihora at Tai Tapu isn’t something that’s come easy for rugby teams in recent years, but Southern managed it on Saturday.

In round three of rugby’s Combined Country Cup competition, Southern downed the defending champions 31-27 and in doing so moved into the outright lead in pool A. For coach Andrew Carr, it was a great result and a strong performance, but still, he wasn’t getting ahead of himself, saying his players must remain level-headed.

Carr said his side dominated Waihora and actually left points on the field, and the game ended up going down to the wire.

Waihora scored a late try and restarted with a deep kick off, which Southern dropped to put themselves under intense pressure in the dying stages, but their defence was solid and held strong.

Jon Dampney again scored a double for Southern, while Sam Madden, Will Mackenzie and Eric Duff all scored a try each, with Richard Fridd adding three conversions.

“To go up there and beat the defending champions, it could’ve gone either way, but we would’ve been disappointed if we lost because we felt like we dominated a fair majority of that game,” Carr said.

Mid Canterbury’s second team in pool A, Hampstead, also picked up a win on Saturday, sending Ashley back home with a 31-17 loss to their names.

It was Hampstead’s first win of the competition and having held a slender 12-10 lead at the break, coach Shaun Bovey said Hampstead knew the game was there for the taking.

It was just a matter of whether they could actually close it out, with wins having been hard to come by for the side in recent years.

They did it, with Legose Lolama scoring a double and captain Lofi Lapa and Ben Faasavala also scoring tries to ensure the win came with what could be a vital bonus point, too.

“We worked pretty hard through the week and our defence was outstanding, it was so brutal it was absolutely on point,

but on attack we rushed ourselves a bit and forced passes and generally made life hard for ourselves,” Bovey said.

After starting the season with a one-point loss to Darfield, Hampstead took a big backward step in their loss to Burnham-Dunsandel-Irwell (BDI) in week two, so the win over Ashley was a vital boost ahead of a big clash with Southern on Friday.

“We gave them seven days to turn their season around and they have done that.

“The good thing for us as coaches is that we are far from our best and we know there’s so much more we can give,” Bovey said.

Mid Canterbury’s third win of the day came in pool B, where Methven bounced back to beat Rolleston 39-29, a week after being demolished by Glenmark-Cheviot 45-0.

said it wasn’t perfect, but it was a step up.

“It wasn’t a polished performance but it was a lot grittier and we showed a lot more enthusiasm and aggression,” Kjestrup said.

Methven captain Matt Groom led the way, with the prop crossing for a hat-trick, while Jeremy Lewthwaite also scored a try on his return from injury.

Mid Canterbury’s second team in pool B, Rakaia, didn’t have such a good day, though.

They headed to Springston and came back with a 30-14 loss.

Rakaia coach Terry Murray said it was a high quality game, and his team just simply wasn’t good enough on the day.

“We beat them twice last year and I thought we prepared well, and I thought we were ready for them,” Murray said.

“But in the first half they got away from us and the second half was 10-7, so we came back well,

but it was too late.

“No excuses, we just have to be better.”

Rakaia scored two tries – one to first-five Harvey Blyth and the other to replacement prop Luke Leahoki Bilo.

It wasn’t a great day for Mid Canterbury’s remaining team, either, with Celtic well and truly beaten at home by Saracens 6710.

A strong end to the first half where Henry Millar and Sean Strange crossed for tries to make it 22-10 to Saracens at the break gave the home crowd some hope that their side was in with a shot, but Saracens put the foot down in the second half.

Celtic coach Shane Enright said it was an embarrassing result, but the fact was Celtic had lost the bulk of their squad from 2018 and had eight injured players on their books at the moment, so they just didn’t have the depth.

Celtic would not giving up and would do some soul searching and come back better for it, starting with this Thursday night under lights at Celtic against West Melton.

West Melton were beaten by Oxford 21-18 on Saturday, while Lincoln beat Hurunui 19-11 in the other pool C match.

In the crossover match between pool B and pool C Southbridge came from behind to beat Prebbleton 30-26, while pool B’s other result saw table-topping Glenmark-Cheviot down Ohoka 59-5.

Back in pool A, Darfield made it three wins from three outings when they beat Kaiapoi 18-8, while BDI beat Hornby 33-6.

Meanwhile in the Canterbury Metro women’s championship, Ashburton’s Celtic were beaten 32-0 by Kaiapoi on Saturday, meaning they’re without a win after two rounds.

Folau may have found some legal loopholes NZME

Two contract technicalities reportedly leave Rugby Australia exposed to an Israel Folau legal threat.

With Folau and Rugby Australia headed for a bitter legal showdown, The Australian on Saturday reported two legal loopholes could force the governing body to backdown on its determination to terminate the controversial star’s reported $4m, four-year contract.

Folau met RA chief executive Raelene Castle on Friday, with neither party backing down in a feud that has threatened to turn ugly.

Now, the Rugby Union Players’ Association has come to Folau’s defence, stressing the star remains an employee of RA and is continuing to fulfil his contractual obligations.

The players’ representatives released a statement stressing that Folau’s case must be “followed

under the code of conduct”.

The Australian now reports that Folau will be armed with two legal loopholes up his sleeve should RA follow through with its publicly declared intent to sack the former NRL and AFL star.

The Australian’s Wayne Smith reports Folau and his management privately believe RA’s handling of his dismissal may not stand up in court.

Folau’s team, led by player agent Isaac Moses, will reportedly attack

the seven-paragraph statement RA first issued in response to Folau’s Instagram post where the governing body indicated it was their intent to terminate Folau’s contract – before any mention of a code of conduct hearing.

It reportedly leaves RA exposed if Folau can successfully argue he was denied fair process by being denied the chance to defend himself in front of the RA board of directors before the decision was made to rip up his contract.

Injuries becoming an issue

Damian McKenzie is the latest injury concern for the All Blacks coaches after he limped from the Waikato Stadium pitch on Saturday night favouring his right knee.

The Chiefs fullback, as electric as ever in his side’s 33-29 win over the Blues, suffered the injury early in the second half when attempting a tackle on first-five Otere Black.

“At the moment it’s a strained knee and obviously in 24 hours … I will know better how he is,” Chiefs coach Colin Cooper said afterwards.

A Chiefs statement later said the 23-year-old would have an MRI scan and that an update would be provided “in the coming days”.

When asked if McKenzie would attend today’s All Blacks foundation day in Wellington, New Zealand Rugby replied that an update on attendees would be given today.

He walked from the field with the help of a Chiefs medic but appeared in pain and if it is a ligament tear he could be out for a considerable amount of time.

As a comparison, Highlanders loose forward Liam Squire tore a medial ligament in training last month and has been ruled out for eight to 10 weeks.

Chiefs and All Blacks lock Brodie Retallick suffered a shoulder injury in the match, one of the most physical of the season for either team, but Cooper was hopeful it was just a stinger with no long-term effects.

Best streaker ever A fleet-footed streaker stole the show at Waikato Stadium on Saturday night as the Chiefs edged the Blues 33-29. The crowd of 14,977 witnessed perhaps the most athletic streaking performance in Super Rugby history. The pitch invader first appeared in sight on the Chiefs’ 22 late in the first half, where he stood motionless, welcoming the security card, before showing express acceleration to send his marker toppling over. He then went on to evade another four security guards before the show was stopped by a thumping tackle on the Blues’ 22.

Williams is likely to be out for six weeks and it could be another long wait before Crusaders prop Owen Franks reappears.

Franks injured a shoulder on the eve of the Waratahs match in Sydney which ruled him out of that loss and his team’s wins over the Brumbies and Highlanders in Christchurch.

The Crusaders have a bye this week, but coach Scott Robertson has already ruled our Franks from playing in the next match against the Lions in Christchurch, a repeat of last year’s grand final.

“We’re going to re-scan in two

weeks to see how the healing is going, to see how serious it is,” Robertson said after his side beat the Highlanders 43-17 with another second-half blitz.

“But, at the moment, he won’t play for the next few weeks.”

The Highlanders, who have now gone six matches without a win, were missing All Blacks halfback Aaron Smith due to an ankle problem and Squire due to a knee injury which will keep him out for another month at least.

The Crusaders’ battled to subdue a Highlanders’ side determined to mark Ben Smith’s 150th game in an appropriate manner, but their second-half performance again proved their title credentials.

One of their few concerns, apart from Franks’ shoulder issue, is the number of penalties they conceded.

The count was 18-5 overall and referee Ben O’Keeffe, after warning skipper Sam Whitelock, didn’t reach for a card until just before the final hooter sounded.

“I was keeping a close eye on that [penalties],” Highlanders coach Aaron Mauger said.

“That was being communicated through the wire and we were trying to do our best to make the referee aware of that count.

“The Crusaders are very good at killing momentum and that’s what they do.

“It’s why they probably don’t leak too many points.”

The Jaguares pummeled the Sharks 51-17 for a second straight win in South Africa as Super Rugby threw up more surprises. The Argentina-based Jaguares’ huge victory in Durban was inspired by a hat-trick from center Matias Orlando and two tries by flanker Pablo Matera, and came a week after the vastly improved Jaguares edged the Bulls in Pretoria. This win was far more compelling, with scrumhalf Tomas Cubelli scoring the first of the Jaguares’ seven tries in the third minute and Orlando completing his hat trick in the 79th for the last.

Sevens crash out The New Zealand Sevens team again lost to a powerful Fijian outfit in the Singapore Sevens yesterday, this time in the quarter-finals. Fiji cleaned up in Hong Kong a week earlier, and scored three tries to one yesterday to end New Zealand’s title hopes with a 19-5 scoreline.

New Zealand had gone through day one unbeaten to set up the heavyweight clash of the second and third-ranked sides in the series. In the other quarter-finals South Africa beat Samoa 21-12, USA beat Argentina 12-10 and England sent Australia packing with a 31-19 victory.

“I hate these (annual) Queen’s Birthday games with Waikato,” an Auckland player told me in the 1980s.

“You go on the bus to Hamilton.

Get booed onto the field. Get the crap kicked out of you for 80 minutes. Get booed off the field, then get back on the bus and have two hours to brood about what just happened.” Nearly 15,000 people in Hamilton on Saturday night got a taste of what it used to be like when the city slickers came to town, when, in the game of the season to date, the Chiefs beat the Blues, 33-29.

What made it the game of the season?

Let’s check the reasons. Two teams fiercely playing themselves to a standstill? Tick. Brilliant tries, including one scored by Melani

Nanai for the Blues that saw the ball moved 80 metres with 22 passes, and one for the Chiefs by Lachlan Boshier that involved 14 phases? Tick. A very agile streaker? Tick. Any downsides? Only that local derbies are brutal on the bodies of all the players.

Defence wins games too

Over the last decade we’ve become used to seeing the All Blacks win by constant attacking, kicking for lineouts to score tries, rather than taking three points from the penalty. The Chiefs have some of the best runners in the country, from Damian McKenzie to Anton Lienert-Brown, but the win in Hamilton was based on defence that was as unyielding as the wall of Donald Trump’s dreams. The Chiefs had a horror start to the year. They’re back, and the Lions could be in a lot of trouble on Friday.

Does this mean the Blues’ bubble has burst?

Not if they can lift themselves up and beat the Highlanders in

Dunedin next Saturday. The body language of captain Patrick Tuipulotu after the game suggested a man disappointed, but by no means terminally dejected.

Player of the weekend

How can anyone not love Karl Tu’inukuafe? His story of playing every game for the Chiefs in 2018 as if it was his last, desperate to make the 10 games that would win him a full contract, and the money he wanted for his family, was as touching as it was real.

With a smile that could light up the national grid, he’s Everyman, if Everyman weighed 135kg, and had a backbone of steel. A catch on his hip, and slick transfer, played a major role in Melani Nanai’s try, and in the scrum he was, as always, a wrecking ball.

Doctor who brings a special machine into the crusaders’ changing room at halftime

If you didn’t know better you’d swear that for their own amusement the Crusaders allowed other teams to take the lead before

humiliating them in the second half. Nobody would have expected the Highlanders to lead 10-7 at halftime in Christchurch. By now plenty wouldn’t have been surprised when the Crusaders then scored 36 effortless points in the second half, and won 43-17.

Does Ben From Accounts have a secret life as Jack Reacher’s right hand man?

In the endlessly impressive career of Ben Smith you can understand his aerial skills, and his speed. He is, after all, built like a sprinter who might also high jump. What’s forever startling is how he bumps and fends off hulking opponents, who look as if they should be easily able to rip his arms off and pick their teeth with them. Pound for pound, as they used to say, he just may be the strongest man in rugby.

Okay, it’s Super Rugby not test matches, but gee, he looks the goods

Even better than the unfussy way Braydon Ennor scored against the

Highlanders was how, in the 56th minute, he caught a cross field kick by Richie Mo’unga, and then stood tall in the tackle of Tom Franklin as coolly as a commuter who knows he needn’t sweat it because the 8.10 bus will be along soon. Sure enough, Sevu Reece was on hand for a lovely Ennor offload, and a stroll to the tryline. Ennor’s been so good since the season opening match he might as well be wearing a sign on his jersey saying Future All Black.

When a second chance works

Last year Sevu Reece’s rugby career was almost over before it had really started when, after being discharged without conviction in Hamilton after pleading guilty to an assault charge, the Connacht club in Ireland withdrew his contract. Remorse and counselling meant the Crusaders were prepared to give him another shot.

He’s rewarded their faith with electrifying form, and an on field work ethic like Richie McCaw’s.

Ready, set go: Argyle Park was a hive of activity yesterday morning as it played host to Figure Fitness’s first kids’ duathlon. The event was all about building kids’ confidence and having fun along the way, and it catered to kids aged from four right through to under-13. Four to six year olds biked 1.2km and ran 600m, while under-9s biked 2.5km and ran 800m, and under-13s biked 3.4km and ran 1.7km.

Coulthard turns tables

The only person who could stop Scott McLaughlin’s complete dominance at round four of the Supercars’ championship at Phillip Island was his team-mate Fabian Coulthard.

The Kiwi has made a bit of a habit of following the defending series champion home of late, but went one better this time by picking up his first win in 11months.

True to form, McLaughlin started on pole and lead the race form the off, only to be relegated to second after the first round of pitstops.

“I’m pumped,” said Coulthard straight after the race.

“Awesome for all my guys. We work so hard as a team.

“Scott’s had a lot of wins this year which is a credit to all those guys, they’ve done a fantastic job.

“To finally get one [a win] is awesome, I can’t thank my crew enough, Shell V-Power, all my sponsors.

“It’s fantastic.

“You know, I was a little bit shocked, I’m not sure what happened to Scott on one of his out laps because I was expecting a red car to go blowing past.

“Thankfully we had great pit

New Zealand driver Fabian Coulthard led V-Power team-mate Scott McLaughlin home yesterday.

“It ticked all the boxes.”

McLaughlin held steady behind Coulthard over the closing laps never letting his team-mate open the gap, or being able to close onto his bumper.

“I’m really happy with my

weekend, it’s been a big week for those guys away, two weeks on the road and to come away with three one-twos is massive,” McLaughlin said.

“We’ll have a little think about it in the debrief, talk about a few things, but the idea is for the team to win and we’ve done that on multiple occasions in this past couple of weeks.”

After back-to-back race weekends the category has a bit of a breather before the next round in Perth, May 2-4.

Potgieter inspirational NZME The halftime introduction of South African international Lenize Potgieter has helped swing an important victory for the Southern Steel.

The visitors came back from four goals down at halftime to score a 60-58 triumph over the Northern Stars yesterday, to strengthen their hold on second spot on the ANZ Premiership ladder.

Inexperienced shooter Jennifer O’Connell was surprisingly awarded the starting spot for the Steel ahead of Potgieter.

The 21-year-old, who had not received much court time this season, clearly struggled with the intensity, shooting at a mere 71 per cent clip before being substituted at halftime.

The Steel quickly fought back in the second half, evening the scores midway through the third quarter thanks to the strategic substitution.

Potgieter’s impact was obvious, with the Steel attacking end instantly becoming more assured.

Potgieter provided a solid target in the circle, coming out to help her attackers, and ended the game with a 92 per cent success rate, while her presence also helped goal attack Te Paea Selby-Rickit find her form.

Steel captain Te Huinga Selby-Rickit described the game as nerve-wracking but said she was “stoked that we got it in the end”.

Who Dares Wins doubles up NZME If on-course patrons at Riccarton thought the noise after Who Dares Wins won last week was at fever pitch it got even louder on Saturday when he backed up to take out the Gr.3 Coca-Cola Canterbury Gold Cup (2000m).

Trainers Tony and Lyn Prendergast, who had performed a remarkable feat last week to get the imposing six-year-old gelding into the winner’s circle over 1600m after a four-month layoff, deserved even greater accolades after the Iffraaj gelding simply out-stayed his rivals over an extra 400m on Saturday.

Settled beautifully in the trail behind free-going pacemaker Dee And Gee, Who Dares Wins travelled kindly for rider Samantha Wynne throughout.

Who Dares Wins issued his challenge at the top of the straight as Residential, who finished runner-up last weekend, went with him as the pair shot clear of their rivals.

A titanic battle was settled in the favour of Who Dares Wins who forged clear in the final 100m to win by a length from Residential with Dee And Gee battling on bravely for third.

The victory proved a fitting result after Wynne and Who Dares Wins had been beaten by the barest of margins by Saint Emilion in the event 12-months earlier.

“It was in the back of our minds about last year as he was beaten on the bob by Saint Emilion,” Tony Prendergast said.

“It is nice to get some revenge and he deserved this one.”

Felaar in titanic finish An inch-perfect ride by Leith Innes saw him guide race-favourite Felaar to a brave victory in Saturday’s Royston Hospital Hawke’s Bay Cup (2200m) at Hastings.

Touted as a stayer of real potential, Felaar had finished runner-up in the Bay Of Plenty Cup at his last start after defeating Gr.3 Manawatu Cup (2200m) winner Rock On at Otaki prior to that. The Bill Thurlowtrained Niagara filly won her first two starts before tackling Group One company in the Oaks. Rider Dylan Turner produced a gem of an effort to save ground against the rail throughout before angling wide for better going in the home straight, before easing clear for a two-length victory.

Prendergast admitted there had been a few worries about backing the horse up a week after his tough run first-up but the gelding’s trackwork had convinced him he was at the top of his game.

“We only gave him some light trotting and cantering but he just thrived,” he said. “Any worries we had were put aside and I think his fitness really showed through in the closing stages.

“He did over-race a bit early

on, but once Samantha got him in a rhythm he travelled sweetly and was going away on them at the line.”

Prendergast doesn’t have any set plans over the next few weeks for his charge, preferring to play it by ear as to where he lines up next.

“We had thought about the Riverton Cup but it would mean running three weeks in a row and he would carry the Town Hall weight-wise,” he said.

“I think we will just take him home and tick him over before we pick something out for him.

“He is far more settled horse this time in and racing really well because of it.

“We have changed his gear slightly by replacing the norton bit we were using with just a conventional one and that has worked well.

“We think there is more in store for him so if we stay patient hopefully, he can deliver for us.”

The good times continued to roll for trainers Kirstin Barclay and Paul Ellis at Winton on Saturday when they scored their first race trifecta.

Barclay led her stable’s success by steering Paddy Proudfoot to win over his stablemates, Franco Hampton and Chuckles. The Barclay-Ellis trifecta came during a magical month for the trainers. The pair have caught the attention of harness racing fans across New Zealand through the deeds of their breakout performer, U May Cullect. “It has been a bit of a fairytale, really,” Barclay said.

Winning beginnings on the turf

It’s a new season and they’re playing with some new rules, but there was nothing new about the sort of form Mid Canterbury’s two senior hockey sides produced on the turf on Saturday.

Both the Wakanui men’s team and the Hampstead women’s team picked up convincing wins in round one of the Mid/South Canterbury senior competitions and in doing so sounded an early warning to their opposing sides that they’d once again be teams to watch this season.

For the past few seasons, both sides had been there or thereabouts.

Last season, Wakanui and Hampstead were top contenders all season, taking out the round robin portion of their respective

competitions, but falling short in the season-ending knock-out rounds.

While there were plenty of nervous jitters around the place on Saturday it didn’t show in their scorelines.

Wakanui got past Northern Hearts 4-1 in Ashburton, while Hampstead kept a clean sheet in their 5-0 win over Craighead in Timaru, on the day where the new four-quarter format made its Mid/South Canterbury senior competition debut.

Despite winning well, Hampstead’s Hannah Young said her side’s fitness wasn’t the best and there was plenty of room for improvement, which would come under the guidance of new coach Nicky Foden.

“We played the new 17 minute quarters instead of two halves, which was good, we just had roll-

ing subs the whole game, and we needed it – the Craighead girls were very fit,” Young said.

Sam Dalzell started her season with a hat-trick, while Hannah Mowat and Emma Mealings slotted Hampstead’s other two goals.

Meanwhile, back in Ashburton, Wakanui found themselves under the pump in the first quarter, but came back to score the opening goal courtesy of James Wright, and going into half time they maintained that 1-0 lead.

Halfway into the third quarter Hayden Sinclair provided a good ball on the circle to give Wright his second of the day, before Northern Hearts started to pile the pressure on, but Wakanui held them out and successfully defended two penalty corners.

With the score still 2-0 heading into the fourth quarter, Hearts

were hungry and started strongly, pushing the ball into the circle and getting a deflection for their first goal.

Wakanui quickly replied though, after a defensive blunder was seized upon by Sinclair who then went go one-on-one with the goalie and calmly slotted Wakanui’s third goal.

Sinclair then finished it off by dragging the ball into the top right of the goal off a penalty corner, giving Wakanui the win 4-1.

Wakanui player/coach Sam Moore said that while his side’s game fitness had proven to be a little lacking, it was a good performance to start the season and he was happy to have a win on the board, and a bonus point – for scoring four goals – in the bank.

Wakanui had been one of the competition’s most consistent

sides in terms of both results and personnel in recent years, with the bulk of their squad having remained the same for around five seasons now, but only three or four of the players who took to the turf on Saturday had played in games of quarters before.

“If you look at the final last year, we are not very good in the last 10 minutes of the game sometimes, but the game got very open and the fact that we have quarters now means we were able to come off and have a wee talk about things and then get back out there,” Moore said.

Due to Easter, senior hockey will take a break this weekend, and when it returns on April 27 Wakanui have the bye, while Hampstead are away again, this time to Timaru Girls’ High School.
