MP shines light on suicide rate

Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon used his maiden speech in Parliament to highlight the significant number of New Zealanders who commit suicide – and how that issue has affected his own life.

Falloon, who gave his speech last evening, said in the past year more than 600 New Zealanders took their own lives.

Although that was crying out to be addressed “there’s no single answer, no silver bullet to fixing that”, he said, adding that he was pleased the last government set aside $100 million as part of Budget 2017 to investigate new approaches to meeting that challenge.

“We have to accept what we have now isn’t working,” Falloon said.

“When 600 of our fellow Kiwis are dy-

ing at their own hands we have to say this is unacceptable.

“When I was in my late teens and early 20s three of my best friends took their own lives in tragic circumstances.

“I’m sorry that I couldn’t do more for them. It’s a feeling that doesn’t go away.”

Sock science a hit with sailors

Sailors in the round the world Volvo Ocean Race are subjected to some brutal weather, but at least their feet will be warm and dry.

Ashburton sock manufacturer The New Zealand Sock Company has supplied specially-engineered merino socks to several crews in the nine-month race, calling on their research and technology department to come up with a sock to suit the extremes of ocean racing.

The sock company uses unique technology on all its socks, with specifically-positioned padding to cushion pressure areas and promote blood flow. Their socks are worn all over the world, by soldiers in Afghanistan and mountain climbers as well as diabetics and those with foot problems.

Owner Euan Sparrow said the company had moved from selling socks to selling sock technology, and customers all over the world were seeking socks fit for purpose.

The socks are all made, tested and packed at the company’s Ashburton factory, where 56 Italianmade machines whirr almost 24 hours a day.

Sparrow said the technology was exciting and the company relished new projects.

The company was approached in March by high-end wet weather yachting gear supplier Zhik to make socks for the Volvo ocean racing teams AkzoNobel and Dongfeng. Long and short socks were needed for a boat shoe and a special boot worn by the sailors.

variations between -5 and 40 degrees and are allowed only a few clothes.

NZ Sock Company international sales manager Gabrielle Simpson said the socks needed to be quick drying and able to wick moisture away from the foot, as well as being comfortable and snug-fitting.

The specially-engineered black socks were a hit, the only request was to incorporate a bright colour so they could be easily found in the dark.

Sparrow said the other advantage of using merino was the socks could also be worn for several days without becoming smelly.

Head of R&D Tony Jessep said people spent hundreds of dollars on specialty footwear but often teamed it with ill-fitting socks.

Specialty socks that worked with specialty footwear were key for healthy, high-performing feet.

The company’s socks are worn and loved by athletes including snowboarder Freeman Andrews, recently named in the New Zealand Winter Olympics team, and ultra runner Hollie Woodhouse.

The same sock science could be handy when New Zealand defends the America’s Cup in 2021.

The Volvo Ocean Racing fleet is due in Auckland in March, halfway through the 72,000km race.

Samples made of merino wool, processed using a unique yarn patented technology NuYarn, and incorporating an elastic support system were made and shipped off for the crews to trial.

Simpson said the socks needed to lock to the sailors’ feet, not slip or slide and cause blisters.

“As the world grows smaller and as technology advances, the things that once held us back, like our distance, become less important, and for biosecurity and our environment, become our strengths,” he said. “Our population, too small for a sizeable domestic mar-

ket, means that we have to trade.

“The benefits of trade are enormous,” Falloon said, and where that was most felt “isn’t Ponsonby or Panmure, Khandallah or Karori; it’s in regional New Zealand.”

The free trade agreement with China had seen trade with that country triple in the past dec-

ade, he said, and now was the time to redouble efforts in new and emerging markets like South America and the Middle East, along with Africa.

However, talk of cutting migrant numbers made Falloon “incredibly nervous”.

“The local economy is growing

strongly in my area,” he said.

“We simply don’t have enough people to do the jobs that are available.”

A large cut to work visas would stall growth in the regions, he said.

“We have to move away from blaming migration for the social ill of the day.”

Lake authorities aim to keep users safe

A busy summer is on the way for Lake Hood, with 17,000 vessels now registered for use in its waters.

But authorities are confident their successful registration programme is also the key to water safety over this busy time of year.

Under a bylaw introduced in 2013, Lake Hood users with vessels over 10 horsepower must pledge to follow the rules, wear their lifejackets and do their bit to make sure the lake stays safe for everyone. “Up until this was in-

troduced we had too many people coming from out of town and not knowing the rules,” Lake Hood project manager Gary Casey said.

“Since we’ve had it in place everyone’s been following the rules … we’ve only had a couple of incidents.”

Though Lake Hood can see more than 100 vessels on the water at a time with no limit in place, Casey said that the amount of boats was not a concern.

“Of course we’d never get all 17,000 at once and I think noise restrictions would come into play … and people aren’t always going

to be in the water. They might go for a waterski for an hour then sit on the shore with a picnic.”

A patrol boat was also introduced in 2013 and it routinely checks that lake users are complying with rules. “It’s starting to get busy now, so we’ll be patrolling heavily,” Casey said.

Though the Lake Hood boat registration scheme began as a trial under Environment Canterbury, it has now successfully inspired similar boat identification regulations around the region.

said after taking into consideration the success of Lake Hood’s registration scheme, a clause was added to the Navigation Safety Bylaw 2016 to make boat identification mandatory.

Boats across the wider Canterbury region will soon have to display a unique identifying name or number either side of the hull.

“In three years’ time, all boats will be required to be identified.”

Today is the first day of the 155th Canterbury A&P Show and organisers have their fingers crossed this year’s event will be blessed by fine weather.

Canterbury Agricultural Park was a flurry of activity yesterday as more than 500 trade exhibitors set up their sites to prepare for three days of selling everything from shirts to spa pools.

Thousands of farmers and equestrian competitors were also there, preening their animals and setting up their camp sites as they readied themselves for three days of competitive action.

Although today marks the first day of the annual show, it’s Friday – Canterbury Anniversary Day – that brings in the biggest crowds.

Over the three days around 100,000 people from all over the country will attend the show as Canterbury celebrates everything the region has to offer.

Judging highlights today include beef and cattle breeds, the grand champion and supreme champion merinos, the all-breeds supreme horse award winner and the Meat and Wool Cup for sheep.

Also not to be missed is the Heartland Bank young auctioneers competition, along with the mint lamb competition taste test judging.

There’s also plenty to see in terms of other entertainment, with international wood chopping, duck herding, an endurocross biking demonstration and a machinery parade.

Children are well catered for, with a chance to have a go shearing on a “toy” sheep, a magician and circus side show.

Musical entertainment includes country singer Kaylee Bell, along with a couple of performances by the New Zealand Army Band.

In brief Inquiry into blaze A fire is under investigation in Timaru after a blaze at a house yesterday. A Southern Fire Communications spokesman said they received a call about the fire on Church Street just after 9.30am.

“It was fully involved. There were occupants in the house but they were all out by the time we got there.” Three fire crews were at the scene. St John South Island spokesman Gerard Campbell said two adults and a child had been taken to Timaru Hospital, one in a minor condition and two in a moderate.

The staff at Ashburton Bunnings have once again worked their generous magic – this time allowing an army of hi-vis wearing youngsters to visit the Resource Recovery Park and

Meat Processing Plant Worm Farm in safety today.

Bunnings donated 120 junior hi-vis vests to Tinwald School for their trip to learn about reducing, reusing and recycling.

Room 1 teacher Sue Wakefield said she put out the call to

borrow the vests for one day, as it is a health and safety requirement for visiting the Resource Recovery Park.

“But I wasn’t expecting anyone to donate them,” she said.

“It’s very generous.”

“We have a big work safety

culture at Bunnings, so it’s nice to be able to donate,” said Mary Banks of the Ashburton branch of Bunnings.

Wakefield said the trip would allow children to see where their waste ends up and how recycling works.

Most Rangitata electorate voters who supported New Zealand First at the election are likely to be pleased the party’s leader chose Labour over National.

This is what the government’s split-voting statistics suggest, with the majority of Winston Peters’ faithful in the electorate giving their candidate vote to Labour’s Jo Luxton.

New Zealand First received 2281 party votes from the electorate. The party did not stand

a local candidate, forcing voters to choose a candidate from another party.

Forty-one per cent gave their vote to Luxton, compared to 36 per cent to the National Party’s Andrew Falloon, who won the electorate and is now its MP. However, Falloon was better at securing the candidate vote from those who supported his party compared to Luxton.

Ninety-one per cent of those who gave their party vote to National also sent their candidate vote Falloon’s way, while 87 per cent of Labour voters gave their

support to Luxton.

The rest were ‘tick-splitters’, giving their candidate vote to an electorate candidate representing a party different to the party they voted for.

The majority of New Zealand First voters in the Selwyn electorate were tick-splitters, and they chose to support National’s Amy Adams over New Zealand First’s own candidate.

Of the 2440 votes received by New Zealand First, 41 per cent gave their candidate vote to Adams. New Zealand First candidate Lindy Palmer attracted 36

per cent of her party’s supporters, while Labour’s Tony Condon only received 15 per cent.

Adams also came out on top for being able to secure the most candidate votes from her party’s supporters, with 96 per cent of National Party voters giving her their candidate vote.

This compared to just 66 per cent of Labour supporters giving their candidate vote to Condon.

Fifteen per cent of people who gave their party vote to Labour gave their candidate vote to Adams.

One person was trapped in a truck after it rolled in the Tasman District. Police rushed to the scene on River Terrace Road between Mount Heslington Rd and Lee Valley Rd before midday to find the truck had rolled. Fire crews were called to assist an occupant out of the truck, who was trapped in the vehicle. A Southern district fire spokesperson confirmed the person trapped was the driver of the vehicle. St John ambulance also attended.

Car hits pedestrians A car hit a taxi in West Auckland before mounting the kerb and crashing into three pedestrians, including two children, a witness says. The three victims were rushed to hospital. Police said a woman with moderate injuries was taken to hospital and two children were taken to Starship hospital with minor injuries.

Drugs arrest A man has been arrested in relation to supplying synthetic drugs in Levin. A 26-year-old has been charged with supplying a psychoactive substance after a police search of his Manakau address uncovered a pump-action shotgun, 56 rounds of ammunition and nearly 4kg of material used to manufacture synthetic drugs.

Detective sergeant Karen Heald, of Levin CIB, said the drug seizure was of significant quantity and once manufactured these materials would have an estimated street value of $100,000. The man was granted bail and is to appear in the Levin District Court on November 16.

Black-fronted tern

Rare river bird numbers set to soar Two species of endangered birds that breed in the upper Rakaia and Rangitata Rivers have been given a survival boost thanks to $100,000 of predator control funding over the next five years.

The funding will be used to monitor traps set to catch predators including stoats, rats, hedgehogs, and ferrets, along the river banks.

The vulnerable wrybill and the endangered black-fronted tern are already benefiting from work done to date, with Wrybill survival increasing from 46% to between 60 - 80%.

Of 71 black-fronted tern nests monitored, 36 yielded hatchings. The survival rate in an area with no predator control was zero.

The funding was granted by the Ashburton Water Zone Committee from it’s Immediate Steps biodiversity fund, with support from external partners.

Historic villa to be demolished today

The Ashburton District Council will today demolish what was once “a beautiful old house”.

The 100-plus year old villa at 131 Havelock Street is on the council’s current administration site, behind the main council office building.

A temporary building is to be constructed in its place, to house the council’s Civil Defence headquarters, and provide temporary council chambers when building begins on the new administration block in Baring Square East.

Ashburton grandmother Jean Stuart said her late mother lived there in the 1980s, renting one of three flats within the building.

Stuart and her children had loved visiting her there and admiring the

home’s old features such as antique fire places.

“It was a beautiful old house, it’s quite sad really, but things have to progress,” Stuart said.

Fellow Ashburton resident Christine Richards also had fond memories. She worked there in the 1990s with the Ashburton Enterprise Agency, alongside fellow councilinitiated organisations Ashburton Safer Community Council and Ashburton District Tourism.

“It was a bit like working from your home really,” she said.

“It could be cold in the winter time with the high ceilings.”

Business services manager Paul Brake said the villa had reached the end of its useful life. It leaked, the wind blew through it, and it was full of borer.

Both the property and finance

departments had been based there up until a couple of years ago, and it had been unoccupied since.

Brake was among staff there alongside facilities managing officer Dave Hampton, and they remember part of the ceiling coming away.

“You get in the ceiling and you don’t need a light because there’s that much daylight coming through,” Hampton said.

Features such as antique fireplaces, architraves and doors were being saved and sold.

The villa will be demolished between 5.30pm and 9pm, and rubble removed Thursday and Friday.

The specifications of the new temporary building will be reported to the council’s Finance and Business Support Committee on November 30.

The Ashburton Cadet Unit has taken out the South Island Efficiency Trophy – now it’s eyeing up the national title for the third year in a row.

The group of 13 to 18-yearolds were presented with the South Island Efficiency Trophy last week, during a visit by Clive Douglas, a Sergeant Major in the New Zealand Army.

The cadet unit will now be visited and assessed by another sergeant on a different set of marking criteria, as they

vie for the National Efficiency Trophy alongside two other units.

Area support officer Cezarne Rodgers said the inspection process was quite intense and in-depth, and assessed the cadets on their allround efficiency.

She said it would be great if the unit could take out the national trophy once again.

The Ashburton Cadet Unit comprises of nearly 30 cadets who train together in leadership, teamwork and adventurous activities.

Pursuing his music dreams

Mid Canterbury Choir scholarship recipient Logan Keggenhoff will be guest soloist at the choir’s annual Christmas concerts next month.

The Geraldine High School graduate is off to Otago University next year to study music and pursue his dream of becoming a composer.

“It’s definitely a bit scary for me, but it’s kind of a gamble that I’m willing to make and I want to make the best of it,” the 17-year-old said.

He had considered a “safer option” of studying clinical psychology, but this year decided on music, as he felt it would be far more rewarding for him.

Logan is an accomplished singer and cellist. He joined his school choir, Colla Voce, in Year 7, and played the lead roles in school productions, Fagin, in Oliver last year, and Cat in the Hat, in Seussical, the Musical this year.

He plays cello in his school’s orchestra, and in the South Canterbury Youth Orchestra. He has also performed with groups including the South Canterbury Drama League.

Logan was awarded the $100 choir scholarship at his school’s prizegiving this month, and also received a $500 Masonic Lodge music scholarship.

Mid Canterbury Choir will stage its concerts in Ashburton and Geraldine, at St Stephen’s Church on December 1 at midday and 5pm, and St Mary’s Church on December 3 at 4pm.

Christmas carols will include Silent Night, Candlelight Carol, Ding Dong Merrily on High, Gloria, Go Tell it on the Mountain, The First Noel and Mary’s Boy Child.

Entry is $5.

Fellow Mid Canterbury Choir recipients for 2017 were Ashburton College student Samantha McArthur and Mount Hutt College student Georgia Williams-Freeman.

Teen culprits’ names given to police Police have been given names of suspects who chanted “drown him” during a brutal assault on a teenager.

The 15-year-old was attacked by a group in Rolleston after the fireworks display on November 4. They dragged him to a water race and held his head under water. Some in the group chanted “drown him”.

Many people have posted about the incident online, including friends of the victim who believe they know who the attackers were, his mother said.

Names had been given to the police.

A friend of the family posted a message on their behalf, which received more than 600 reactions and a number of comments offering support and condemning the attack.

But police are saying little publicly about finding the offenders.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Ford told the Selwyn Times yesterday there was no update. Inquiries are ongoing, he said.

The four alleged offenders are all teenagers, the Selwyn Times has been told.

The attack appears to have been robberymotivated.

Four youths approached the teenager on Tennyson St, Rolleston, at about 10.30pm and demanded his cap.

When he refused to hand it over, he was attacked.

Leila MacKinnon was finally able to farewell her daughter at yesterday’s anniversary of the Kaikoura earthquake.

Mother farewells dead daughter A year has passed since Leila MacKinnon learned of her daughter’s death following a magnitude 7.8 earthquake on the Kaikoura Coast.

Jo-Anne MacKinnon, 55, was killed in her Mt Lyford home after receiving a head injury caused by the quake’s power.

She was one of two people killed during the November 14, 2016 earthquake.

Jo-Anne’s 82-year-old mother was finally able to farewell her daughter at yesterday’s anniversary of the quake, having not been able to attend the original funeral due to her age and the region’s blocked roads.

Leila MacKinnon was joined by around 250 others at a dawn service and blessing led by te Runanga o Kaikoura at the restored South Bay Marina yesterday.

As the sole family member present of either of the two quake victims, she had a special role when she laid flowers at a whale bone memorial, accompanied by Kaikoura Mayor Winston Gray.

Despite having been in Christchurch during the disaster, Leila MacKinnon recalled the day of the quake with heartbreaking clarity to Herald Focus reporter Tristram Clayton.

“It is like unreal. I was up on my own and it wouldn’t stop. It went on and on and I have

never noticed it before so long, it wouldn’t stop,” she said. “I got a chair and sat with the telephone and it wouldn’t stop, the rocking, rocking, rocking.”

MacKinnon spoke of her concern for her daughter as the hours passed following the quake.

“I kept saying Jo-Anne for goodness sake ring me, ring me, ring me but nothing happened. Nobody rang me.”

She recalled the moment her granddaughter, Jo-Anne’s daughter, burst through the back door and said her mother was dead.

An autopsy finding by forensic pathologist Johan Duflou later stated the death was caused by “blunt force head injury [earthquake fatality]”.

MacKinnon said she has lived with her daughter’s death “day after day”, but found some relief in yesterday’s service.

“It was so amazing and it was a beautiful service. I met so many people that knew me but I was gathering them up,” she said. “It was lovely.”

The family also planned to hold a private ceremony at Jo-Anne’s grave later yesterday.

Gray told the Herald it had been “a tough old year” for the region.

“It’s going to take some time to recover.”

Rocket Lab moves towards its second launch Rocket Lab has moved its second Electron launch vehicle to Mahia as it prepares for a second launch.

The rocket has been moved from Auckland to Launch Complex 1 on Mahia Peninsula, where pre-flight checks will take place.

The company says test window dates were expected to be announced in “coming weeks”.’

Rocket Lab’s first launch in May was successful and the Electron got to space but didn’t make it to orbit after range safety officials had to kill the flight.

The rocket, named “It’s a Test”, was terminated due to a “data loss time out”, which was caused by misconfiguration of telemetry equipment owned and operated by a third-party contractor.

Four minutes into the flight, at an altitude of 224km, the equipment lost contact with the rocket temporarily and, according to standard operating procedures, range

safety officials terminated the flight by cutting power to its engines. The rocket disintegrated as it fell back into the Earth’s atmosphere in the Southern Ocean.

Rocket Lab founder and CEO Peter Beck said yesterday the second rocket “Still Testing” was performing well through rigorous acceptance tests and the team is focused on final flight preparations.

“It’s a great feeling to have another rocket on the pad,” Beck said.

“Still Testing” will carry an Earth-imaging Dove satellite for Planet and Lemur-2 satellites for Spire for weather mapping and ship traffic tracking.

Electron will go through a series of final checks and tests in the coming weeks before a yet-to-be-announced launch window opens.

As the flight is still a test, Rocket Lab anticipates several scrubs, or “postponements”, during the second test flight attempt.

MPs’ work set to start Colin Williscroft SENIOR REPORTER

A

fter what seemed like one long, over-extended false start after the election back in September, Parliament is now well and truly back under way, with both the district’s new MPs having acquitted themselves well delivering their maiden speeches in the past week.

Labour List MP Jo Luxton was given the honour of speaking at the opening of Parliament, while last night National Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon showed that despite being a first term MP, he is no stranger to Parliament and its workings with a composed performance.

Both emerged from the experience looking like they belonged, although it has to be said that you’re given a much easier ride in a maiden speech than at any other time speaking in the House, when snide remarks and cheap political point scoring are more likely the order of the day.

However, given Falloon has worked for three different cabinet ministers in the past he should have a fairly good idea of what goes on, while Luxton’s background in early childhood education may yet come in handy when having to deal with some of the childish behaviour the place is infamous for.

Time will tell how quickly they adapt to their new environment.

The Ashburton District should be well-served during the next parliamentary term, with high-flying Selwyn MP Amy Adams another the district can lay some claim to, given part of her electorate includes Rakaia.

These days Adams is a highly experienced and respected MP, a former cabinet minister who this time around will be sitting on the opposition front bench.

Added to that her name is regularly mentioned in dispatches when the subject of future National Party leaders comes up.

Between the three of them Luxton, Falloon and Adams should be able to provide the district’s constituents with a pretty good service when it comes to advocating for people who live in the area.

Anyone who needs a local MP’s support or representation when they’re feeling frustrated or ignored by their dealings with any one of a number of different bureaucracies should be able to find a sympathetic ear who speaks some form of their political language, whether that comes with a red or blue background, or something in between.

H

aving clean air around us is so important – for our health, the health of our families and the reputation of our district as one of New Zealand’s food baskets.

Ashburton District Council has been working hard, alongside Environment Canterbury, to improve the state of the district’s air through a new air plan for Canterbury. The plan aims to improve air quality by better managing activities that involve discharging contaminants into the air. This includes everything from home heating and outdoor burning to industry and farming activities.

Our air quality is assessed

by Environment Canterbury monitoring particulate matter 10 micrometres or less in diameter, also known as PM10.

Home heating, industry, vehicles, and even dust and seat salt all contribute to PM10. ECan monitors PM10 concentrations in eight airsheds around the region – Ashburton; Christchurch (St Albans); Christchurch (Woolston); Kaiapoi; Rangiora; Geraldine; Timaru; Washdyke; and Waimate.

PM10 levels in Ashburton usually peak in winter. This winter, our maximum daily average for PM10, was the lowest on record. The same happened in Timaru, Kaiapoi and Christchurch.

Ashburton led the way in the number of low pollution nights across Canterbury. This year, there were only three high pollution nights, a considerable drop since 2006, when there was a record of 28 high pollution nights.

Steps taken to reduce pollution To make further reductions to our PM10 levels, we must all work together to improve our air quality. One of the first steps taken by our council, after the new air plan was introduced, was to encourage the replacement of home log burners, older than 15 years, with new, low emission burners.

I want to thank all Ashburton homeowners, who complied with the October 31 deadline, for obtaining consent for a replacement burner. While the council is still processing consents, most of you will eventually be able to choose between a low emission wood burner and an ultra-low emission wood burner.

Those who missed the deadline, who have a burner that is older than 15 years, will only be able to install an ultra-low emission one.

Another achievement, that makes me proud of our district, is our work with Community Energy Action in providing home heating subsidies of up to $5000 for Ashburton residents.

This year we were able to expand the subsidies’ eligibility criteria so that more Ashburton people and their families could access better heating. In order to do this, we altered the income threshold and allowed people who may own both a heat pump and an older style fire in the same house to be potentially eligible for a subsidy. This winter, $16,582 was used for Ashburton subsidies.

How you can help I’m very proud of the results we are achieving in reducing Canterbury’s air pollution and keeping up with national clean air standards.

Even in summer, there are things we can do to keep our air clean. The first step you can take is to get your chimney cleaned this season and then make sure it is cleaned every year.

When receiving your wood, make sure you stack it so that it is under cover and doesn’t

become damp. Start your fire with paper and dry kindling and never burn green, wet or chemically treated wood.

Make sure you, your family, and employees are aware of the outdoor burning rules. While outdoor burning can sometimes be seen as a necessity for rural properties, if you are on a site smaller than 2ha you should not burn.

The burning of any green waste is not allowed without a resource consent, regardless of the size of the property. To find out more about the burning rules, head to fireandemergency.nz Warmer weather also signals that it’s time to get the barbecue out! While outdoor cooking is allowed, please make sure smoke from your barbecue, pizza oven or other cooking equipment does not go beyond your boundary and become a nuisance to your neighbours.

Quake toll rises higher A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake near the Iraq-Iran border has killed more than 430 people across both countries.

Iran’s western Kermanshah province bore the brunt of the quake, with authorities saying the quake killed 445 people in the country and injured 7370.

In Iraq, the shallow earthquake killed at least seven people and injured 535, all in the country’s northern Kurdish region, according to Iraq’s Interior Ministry.

The quake was centred outside the eastern Iraqi city of Halabja, according to the most recent measurements from the US Geological Survey.

It could be felt on the Mediterranean coast, some 1000 kilometres away.

Iranian social media and news agencies showed images and videos of people fleeing their homes. More than 100 aftershocks followed.

The quake’s worst damage appeared to be in the town of Sarpol-e-Zahab in Kermanshah province, which sits in the Zagros Mountains that divide Iran and Iraq.

Sarpol-e-Zahab residents said the power and water were out and telephone and cellphone lines were spotty.

Catastrophic ‘warning to humanity’ A prophetic “warning to humanity” giving notice of perils facing the Earth has been issued by more than 15,000 scientists from around the world.

Climate change, deforestation, loss of access to fresh water, species extinctions and uncontrolled human population growth are all threatening mankind’s and the Earth’s future.

The letter, originally written in 1992 and signed by 1500 sci-

entists, argued human impacts on the natural world were likely to lead to “vast human misery” and a planet that was “irretrievably mutilated”.

But a quarter of a century since a majority of the world’s living Nobel Laureates united to sign a warning letter about the Earth, the global scientific community’s view of the future is even more bleak.

The message, posted online,

updates an original Warning from the Union of Concerned Scientists and around 1700 signatories delivered in 1992, the MailOnline reported.

Retail giant Amazon buys TV rights to Lord of Rings

AgriHQ noted that 33 per cent of all New Zealand lamb exported in October was sent to China and Hong Kong, ahead of the 24-to-29 per cent share of exports over the past three years. A similar trend was seen in Australia, with China and Hong Kong accounting for 22 per cent of that country’s lamb exports, up from 13-to-19 per cent over the previous three years.

“China’s insatiable demand for sheep meat has inflated the mutton market even further than lamb prices,” AgriHQ’s Brick said in a section of the report titled ‘Mutton flying on a high’.

“The inability to secure enough lamb mixed with the high pricetag on lamb cuts has led to some

Chinese buyers using mutton as a substitute, compounding what was already firm demand.”

New Zealand and Australian exporters had reportedly diverted a larger portion of mutton into China to take advantage of the strong demand, Brick said.

The lift in international demand had bolstered confidence in the sheep industry to among the highest levels found in recent years, he said.

Lamb slaughter prices held very firm through October and all indications point towards values holding well above historic levels through until the New Year, Brick said, although he warned there are questions around how demand will fare beyond the Chinese New Year as other markets were “variable”, with the EU and the US firm and the Middle East and the UK weaker by comparison.

New Zealand sheep meat prices are being pushed up to record levels as Chinese buyers look to secure supply ahead of their New Year celebrations.

The most recent North Island slaughter price for mutton was a record $4.75/kg, compared with a five-year average of $3.32/kg, while the South Island slaughter price lifted to a record $4.80/kg, from a five-year average of $3.06/ kg, AgriHQ said. North Island lamb advanced to $7.30/kg, from a five-year average of $6.21/kg, while South Island lamb advanced to $7.15/kg from a five-year average of $5.94/kg, and AgriHQ said lamb prices are tracking above $7/ kg for the first time since November 2011.

Sheep meat is popular in China for use in traditional dishes and traders are buying the meat now to ensure it makes it to China in time for New Year celebrations starting mid-February and to cover demand for the ensuing holiday period. Also known as the spring festival, the Chinese New Year falls on February 16, 2018, and the festival will last until March 2, about 15 days in total. As an official public holiday, Chinese people can get seven days’ absence from work, from February 15 to 21.

Meaty, succulent balls

M

■ Add the zest, stir, then add the chilli flakes, cinnamon, tomatoes, sugar and seasoning.

■ Let simmer for 15 minutes.

■ Preheat oven to 180°C. Make the meatballs by mixing all the ingredients together, except the oil.

■ With wet hands, shape the mixture into small balls. Heat the oil and brown in batches.

eatballs are one thing even the fussiest of children seem to like, but they shouldn’t be dismissed as a great dish for adults too.

The quality of the meatball has everything to do with the quality of mince used. Add a zingy glaze and a tasty sauce, cook pasta, rice or potatoes, serve a salad on the side and you’ll have a simple and quick meal that will please even the fussiest diner.

And, like most recipes, what you add to your meatballs is as wide as the imagination.

Baked meatballs

Baked pork and mince balls 3/4 C milk 4 slices white bread 500g pork mince 500g beef mince 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1/4 C finely grated parmesan cheese, plus extra to serve 1/2 C chopped parsley 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2T olive oil 4 cans diced tomatoes Basil Chopped chillis ■ Preheat oven to 220°C. ■ Place the bread in a bowl and pour over the milk. Set aside for 5 minutes to absorb.

■ Tear the bread into pieces and place in a large bowl.

■ Add pork and beef mince, eggs, parmesan, parsley and garlic.

■ Mix well to combine and roll tablespoonfuls of the mixture into balls.

■ Place in large pan and drizzle with oil.

■ Bake for 20-25 minutes or until browned.

■ Combine tomatoes, chopped basil and chillis.

■ Add to meatballs, mix well.

■ Bake for a further 5-8 minutes or until the sauce is warmed through.

■ Sprinkle with the remaining parmesan to serve.

■ Serve with spaghetti or on mashed potatoes.

Lemony chicken meatballs 1 onion, finely diced 500g chicken mince 2T chopped parsley and thyme 1t lemon rind 1/4 C panko breadcrumbs 1/4 C olive oil, plus 2T for saute 1 garlic clove, crushed 1/2 red pepper, diced 1/4 C white wine 1/2 C water 400g canned tomatoes, peeled and chopped 2T tomato paste Salt and pepper

■ Combine half the onion with the chicken mince, herbs, lemon, salt and breadcrumbs.

■ Mix well. Roll into walnut-sized balls and chill until ready to cook.

■ Heat 2T of oil in a medium saucepan.

■ Saute remaining onion, garlic and diced peppers for 4-5 minutes until softened.

■ Add the wine, water, tomatoes, paste and season well, then simmer for 5 minutes.

■ Heat remaining oil in a large frying pan.

■ Cook meatballs over a mediumlow heat until lightly golden brown on all sides.

■ Drain off any excess oil and add the tomato sauce to the meatballs.

■ Cook gently for 8-10 minutes until they are cooked through.

■ Serve meatballs over hot pasta with shaved parmesan.

Lamb meatballs 2T olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2t ground coriander 2t ground cumin 1/2 orange, zested 1t chilli flakes 1/2 t cinnamon 800g crushed tomatoes, two 400g tins 1t sugar Pepper and salt Meatballs 500g lamb mince 1 small onion, diced finely 2T parsley, finely chopped Salt and pepper 1T chopped mint 2T olive oil

500g beef mince 1t lemon zest 2 large eggs 1T dried oregano 1 large clove garlic, finely chopped 1/4 C grated, reduced-fat cheese Freshly ground pepper 2 slices bread, soaked in 100ml reduced-fat milk 1T olive oil 400g can whole tomatoes in juice 2T dried basil (or 2C fresh basil leaves, torn) ■ Preheat oven to 200°C. ■ Spray an 8-cup ovenproof dish with olive oil spray.

■ In a bowl, combine mince, lemon zest, eggs, oregano, garlic and cheese.

■ Season with pepper.

■ Squeeze bread to remove milk, crumble up and combine with mixture.

■ Shape mince mixture into balls and refrigerate to firm up.

■ Heat oil in a heavy-based frying pan over a medium heat.

■ Brown meatballs on all sides, shaking the pan frequently.

■ Add tomatoes and cook until sauce slightly thickens.

■ Stir in half the basil.

■ Transfer to a casserole dish and sprinkle with remaining basil.

■ Bake 20 mins, serve with rice or pasta.

In brief Open may skip year The New Zealand Women’s Golf Open looks set to take an air shot next year and tee off again in February or April 2019, creating a 16- to 18-month hiatus between tournaments. The event won’t be included on the Ladies’ Professional Golf Association 2018 tour schedule. Breakers owners Paul and Liz Blackwell will relinquish their controlling stake in order to bring new investors, the Auckland-based Australian NBL club confirmed yesterday. The Blackwells said they felt it was time for someone else or another group to take the club to another level. “We have owned the club now for 13 years, and it’s become apparent for us that it’s the right time for new investors to take the club forward,” Paul Blackwell said.

AFL clubs eye NBL AFL clubs are considering setting up teams to play in an NBL competition slated for “imminent” expansion. Defending Rally Australia champion Andreas Mikkelsen is hoping the forecasters get it wrong ahead of the weekend’s racing in Coffs Harbour. The Norwegian drove a Volkswagen to victory in the manufacturer’s World Rally Championship swan song last year and has returned to Australia in a Hyundai hopeful of going back-to-back. A field of 78 crews began scoping the 320km route yesterday and the sun should be out when racing begins on Friday morning. But rain is expected on Saturday and Sunday, which Mikkelsen anticipates will slow him down.

Lazarus does it again

Lazarus, winner of the last two New Zealand Cups by a combined margin of 15 and three quarter lengths, jets out of Christchurch tomorrow for Sydney, then heads to Perth on Sunday for another harness racing holy grail, the $A1.1 million Inter Dominion Pacing Championship.

The modern-day NZ champion will try to emulate former stablemate Smolda, who won last year’s Perth Inter Dominion Grand Final.

Lazarus had yesterday’s Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup virtually parcelled up after the opening 200 metres of the 3200m contest.

Without being placed under any mid-race pressure, Lazarus had the $800,000 feature giftwrapped by the home turn, clearing out in a virtual repeat of his first win in the race 12 months ago, when he won by 10 lengths.

This time, the margin was 5 and 3/4 lengths and not quite as quick as his first cup win, posting 3:55 (1.9 second slower than his NZ and race record) but no less impressive.

The lead time off the front

by Lazarus over the last mile in 1:54.7 was more than enough for his chasing rivals, quickening over his last 800m in 54.4s and his last 400m in 27.3s.

Rolleston co-trainer and driver Mark Purdon (recording his fourth driving win in the race) admitted he felt pretty good about the outcome after Lazarus made such a fast start from the six draw.

“The start was key with him getting away good,” Purdon said.

“I was worried about a few further out getting away better than him.

“I thought if we could get away a little bit quicker it would make all the difference,” he said.

The $1.40 favourite became the shortest-priced New Zealand Cup winner and went to the line with a bit still in the tank for the upcoming Australian expedition.

Mare in mint condition La Diosa is in prime order as she bids to add another Riccarton feature to her record. Last season’s Gr.1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas (1600m) winner has thrived ahead of today’s Gr.2 Coupland’s Bakeries Mile (1600m). “We’re very happy with her, it’s a big test against the older horses but we’re sure she’ll give her best,” said Mandy Brown, who trains La Diosa with her husband Matt. We’ll get him home and make a plan now,” said trainer Allan Peard.

Mark Purdon salutes the judge as Lazarus cruises to the line in yesterday’s New Zealand Cup. son of champion sire Bettor’s Delight has a champion’s record, with this his 31st win from 36 starts for owners Glenys and Phil Kennard, Trevor Casey and Kevin Riseley, taking his earnings to $2,681,262.

“He’s the perfect horse and has a great temperament for a stallion,” Purdon said. “He’s just a pleasure to train and a lovely horse.”

Purdon, and training partner Natalie Rasmussen, have five earmarked for the Perth trip but wouldn’t finalise how many will go until discussing yesterday’s runs with the respective drivers.

It was a family affair for the Purdon harness racing dynasty with Mark’s brother Barry (who had co-trained four previous NZ Cup winners with father Roy),

training yesterday’s runner-up Jack’s Legend.

“It was better than I could have hoped with him running second,” Barry Purdon said of Jack’s Legend, a four-year-old who was having only his 20th start.

There was controversy among the chasers with 800m to run when Tiger Tara, who ran second to Lazarus 12 months ago and was returned to Christchurch for yesterday’s race by co-owner and trainer Kevin Pizzuto, put in an untimely tangle.

Tiger Tara, who recovered well for third, was going well outside the leader when he tried to jump some manure on the track, inconveniencing Titan Banner.

“He’s never done that in his life,” Pizzuto said. “But for that he

would have run second and got a lot closer to Lazarus,” he said.

Second favourite Heaven Rocks began for a couple of strides, then tangled losing five lengths.

“I was trying to get someone to go ahead of me but had to move up three wide myself starting the last lap,” said driver Natalie Rasmussen.

“It was just too much but he’s alright.

“He can come back on Friday and have another go.,” Two of the 14 horse field never gave their supporters a run.

Seel The Deal, usually a good beginner according to driver Ricky May, put in a backward step as the tapes were released, with Dream About Me cannoning into him, and losing her chance.

Sam makes it a winning Cup Day double Sam Ottley was the driver to follow early on Christchurch Casino NZ Trotting Cup day yesterday, scoring wins with Sundons Flyer and Real Torque.

Ottley found the perfect trail in both races, delivering Sundons Flyer at 13-to-one for Burnham trainer Bruce Negus, who went into the race confident the consistent Sundon mare was a good winning chance.

Negus, who bred the chestnut mare and races her with Barrie Barber and John Gledhill, felt campaigning Sundons Flyer extensively on the south circuit last year made the mare as she grew in confidence.

Real Torque, a half-sister to fast USA winner Statesman (1:50.4) and good West Australian winner Calais (1:55.3), was recording her sixth win in 36 starts for owners, Katherine Hatton, along with daughters, Emma, Gina and Kate.

Katherine’s husband Grant owns former Auckland Cup place-getter Saveapatrol, who is the early stages of a potential comeback for the Mark Jones stable after being prematurely retired last year.

Bill Thurlow will wait until Saturday before stepping out his smart mare Glory Days. The Waverley trainer left her in today’s Valachi Downs Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes (1400m), but said he favoured reserving the five-year-old for a Rating 75 mile at the weekend. “I waited to see what the field was going to be like, but backing her up in a Group race at pretty much even weights is a step too far at this stage,” Thurlow said. - NZME

Jockey making his mark Christchurch-based jockey Krish Gundowry is putting his international experience to good use. The Reliable Man filly, a half-sister to the dual Group One winner MacO’Reilly, turned her form around to win the Te Aroha Stallion Placement Scheme 1400m after an inglorious first-up effort. “We were a bit deflated after Tauranga when nothing went right,” co-trainer Jamie Richards said. “We thought she was an Oaks filly so hopefully she’ll keep going the right way.”

Auret to break his duck Nigel Auret’s hopes of breaking his Riccarton duck rest with La Fille En Jeu. The successful Wanganui breeder, owner and trainer has been an infrequent visitor to the South Island’s premier course with four placings there from six runners.

La Fille En Jeu looks a strong chance to open Auret’s account when she steps out in the Gr.3 Valachi Downs Canterbury Breeders’ Stakes (1400m) today.

Midweek match has test feel All Blacks coach Steve Hansen isn’t concerned their midweek match in Lyon this morning is being promoted as a test.

Sport Baby Fed dreams big Grigor Dimitrov says he’s living the dream after marking his ATP Finals debut with a thrilling three-set win over Dominic Thiem. The first Bulgarian to qualify for the seasonending championship, Dimitrov upset the Austrian fourth seed 6-3 5-7 7-5 in the opening match of the Pete Sampras Group. Dimitrov broke Thiem for a third time to prevail after almost two and a half hours.

Long touted as a future superstar, the 26-year-old is trying to lose his unwanted title as “Baby Fed” for his uncannily similar playing style to Roger Federer.

Joseph Parker’s promoters have described an offer from British heavyweight Anthony Joshua’s handlers for a title unification bout as possibly the most insulting in boxing history.

David Higgins, from Parker’s promoters Duco Events, had been exchanging emails with WBA and IBF titleholder Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearns over a possible fight early next year.

Higgins said he had all but given up on a unification bout after receiving a “ridiculously low offer” from Hearn.

Home advantage handy Ashburton riders pressed their home advantage to win titles at the South Island Show Jumping Championships in Ashburton over the weekend.

Lucinda Askin, riding Portofino, won the Young Rider Series while Kimberley Bird, on Cera Cassina, was second and sister Jaimee Bird on Double J Wilma was sixth.

Askin also won the South Island horse mini prix.

Around 400 horses and 260 riders took part in the show jumping and show hunter championships at the Ashburton Showgrounds, with the two days of competition covering training pony classes through to the World Jumping Challenge

and the South Island Super League.

The world challenge gives riders the opportunity to compete in an international event without leaving the country by riding the same course, designed this year by Brazilian course-designer Guilherme Jorge.

Jaimee Bird was second in the Ashburton leg of the challenge.

Thirty additional yards were built at the showgrounds to accommodate the event, as well as 20 temporary yards to accommodate horses.

Hodge still in Big Bash Brad Hodge will resurrect his Big Bash League career with the Melbourne Renegades, embarking on his 25th season of professional cricket.
