Rangitata MP Andrew Falloon used his maiden speech in Parliament to highlight the significant number of New Zealanders who commit suicide – and how that issue has affected his own life. Falloon, who gave his speech last evening, said in the past year more than 600 New Zealanders took their own lives.
Although that was crying out to be addressed “there’s no single answer, no silver bullet to fixing that”, he said, adding that he was pleased the last government set aside $100 million as part of Budget 2017 to investigate new approaches to meeting that challenge. “We have to accept what we have now isn’t working,” Falloon said. “When 600 of our fellow Kiwis are dy-
ing at their own hands we have to say this is unacceptable. “When I was in my late teens and early 20s three of my best friends took their own lives in tragic circumstances. “I’m sorry that I couldn’t do more for them. It’s a feeling that doesn’t go away.”
