The bank that runs on time, not money

Imagine a world where everyone was equal, where your skills were as highly valued as anyone else’s and where you could learn new skills and have jobs done without spending a cent.

That world exists in the fastgrowing phenomenon of TimeBanking and it’s coming to Ashburton.

It’s a simple concept and one Ashburton primary school teacher Kate White is passionate about.

She’s the driving force behind the Mid Canterbury TimeBank that’s ready to hit the community on October 1.

White believes the concept will be a winner in the Ashburton District.

The TimeBank is about bringing people together to share their skills and ultimately to recreate a sense of community.

“It’s about exchanging skills and service in the community without any money changing hands. You earn and pay in time credits; one hour of work is worth one hour of time in the bank.”

After returning from overseas, White was determined to see a TimeBank established in Ashburton and most people she’d spoken to were enthusiastic about the idea.

“I love it, not from a cost-saving perspective, but from the way it strengthens a community. But I realised if it was going to happen I had to do it,” she said.

One of TimeBank’s strengths was that it brought people together who may never have met without the skills exchange, White said.

Most people did not realise how many skills they had that could be shared with others – conversational English, preserving, gardening, babysitting, sports and hobbies or skills that were related to their paid work, she said.

“And a lot of older people have skills, experience and knowledge they don’t realise is special that a lot of younger people might want to learn.”

One of the strengths of TimeBank was that all skills were equal, earning a one-hour credit for one hour of time given.

The key was for members to be both givers and takers, but often people were keen to offer their skills rather than seeking help, she said.

Everyone can use TimeBanking – individuals, groups and organisations, not-for-profits and businesses alike. “The only limit to this is your imagination,” she said.

Potential members must have two referees and all members are

police checked before they are added to the growing TimeBank community. Police checks are not about excluding people, they’re more about ensuring everyone is safe and, for example, that a person who has a driving conviction is not able to offer driving services, White said.

As part of the enrolment process people work through a check sheet, ticking the skills they have to offer and these are logged into

a database. White is in the process of establishing the TimeBank’s website, but a Facebook page Mid Canterbury TimeBank is active and has details about joining the organisation and events on the calendar. The organisation’s contact phone number is 022 3997301.

ple. White likens this to the community college classes of the past.

Mid Canterbury is one of 27 around New Zealand. The first, Lyttelton, was established in 2005.

The TimeBank will launch on October 1 with a public day between 1pm and 4pm in the Park Street Sinclair Centre. This will involve working demonstrations where members undertake some of the activities they bring to the bank.

Golf clubs toughen up on green fees

Golf clubs across the Ashburton District are losing thousands of dollars each year in unpaid green fees.

But as the peak abuse season, summer, approaches and the cost of casual players using courses for free rises, clubs are about to get tough, stepping up vigilance and posting warnings about infringement penalties.

Golf clubs were like any other club, Tinwald’s president Chris Hart said, with members’ subscriptions paying for and maintaining facilities they could use and enjoy.

Casual players were welcome to use those same facilities if they paid green fees, but freeloaders were not welcome, Hart said.

“Like other clubs our green fees represent a fair amount of income and casual players use the facilities our members are paying for through their subs.”

In a Facebook post the club has made it clear that members have the right to ask casual players to produce green fee tickets and Hart said vigilance would be stepped up over the summer.

There were also incidents of people putting less than the required amount in the green fee envelope, attaching a ticket to their golf bags and then playing the course.

To clamp down on this, green fee envelope contents will be checked regularly. The club also has warning signs that make it clear anyone caught playing without paying the right amount can be fined.

The Ashburton club was also taking a tough line on non-payers said match committee chairman Barry Day. While the club’s pro shop is staffed most days of the week, outside those hours club members would be on a roster to monitor green fee payment.

“We don’t believe it’s fair [that] the members are subsidising other users,” Day said.

“Without our green fees we’d have to double our membership costs,” he said.

While it does not have people on course fulltime monitoring green-fee payment, Wackwitz said there were enough people on hand to ensure the opportunities to play for free were limited.

It’s a fine line, he said, between encouraging casual golfers to learn and enjoy the game and ensuring club members were not carrying all the costs.

Casual golfers will have a summer-long opportunity to play any of the Ashburton District’s golf courses at a bargain basement price.

The district’s five courses have joined forces to introduce a monthly social Sunday golf programme that will open their courses to casual players for a $10 green fee. The first event will be on October 8 and $10 Sundays will then be held on the second Sunday of each month until the end of daylight saving.

Methven’s golf co-ordinator Barry Wackwitz has initiated the

social Sunday deal, saying golf clubs needed to look at innovative ways to bring in new members.

“We’re trying to identify the people who say they’re casual golfers and give them a deal so they’ll come and enjoy golf and that will make them want to play a bit more often,” Wackwitz said.

The end game was to encourage casual golfers to become members of a club.

And that would boost what for many clubs, was now static membership numbers, he said.

“We’ve got plenty of capacity at all of our clubs and I can see what the future will be if we can’t make

people fall in love with the game.

If we can do that then membership will follow.”

The five local clubs were right behind the social Sunday programme and it also had the support of Canterbury and Aorangi golf, Wackwitz said.

“This programme will see all of the clubs hold their social day on the same day, the second Sunday of the month and it’ll give people an opportunity to play five holes, 18 holes or whatever they want.

It’s all about participation for those casual golfers out there.”

Social Sundays will be held at Methven, Ashburton, Tinwald, Rakaia and Mayfield.

Life’s about food, family for Nadia

In 2011 Nadia Lim was a dietician who dreamed of publishing her own recipe book; today she’s a household name.

Lim’s life changed when she won New Zealand’s second Masterchef title, a win that saw her become public property and catapulted her on a career path that sees her about to publish her seventh recipe book, establish a home delivery food service and become a television personality.

It’s a dream she’s had since she was seven years old; Masterchef became the vehicle.

“I went on the show just for the chance of publishing my own cookbook.

“I didn’t care about the other prizes, in fact I gave most of those away. My mum got the grocery vouchers and I sold the car,” she said.

Back then Masterchef didn’t come with a big cash prize, but it did come with plenty of kitchen equipment and Lim admits she was keen to hold on to that.

The win was a defining moment in her life.

With the show wrapped up she married long-time boyfriend, Carlos Bagrie, and swapped a working life as a dietician for Diabetics for Life for a life as public property living a food-lovers’ dream.

Since her win, Lim has published seven recipe books, founded a home delivery food service, My Food Bag that took home cooking by storm, founded a magazine – Nadia, that has just been awarded magazine of the year and spoken at countless events.

But her greatest achievement she says is the birth of son Bodhi, now 17 months old.

Motherhood hasn’t slowed Lim down.

She’s often on the road, launching books, meeting fans or working on any of a dozen food related projects, but she says she’s careful to manage her time away.

“Generally I’ll only be away for two or three days at a time, that’s almost bearable but any longer and it’s very tough,” she said.

In Ashburton at its launch last night, Lim said her food style has gone almost full circle.

“After Masterchef I was quite ambitious with my cooking. I was full of fire and wanting to try out new techniques. I was using clever flavours but now I’m wanting to come back to foods that were childhood favourites – with a twist.”

That’s what motherhood does, she said “I love all my books; my recipe books tend to reflect where I am

in my life. They’re all fairly family centred, particularly this one.”.

The change of food style also reflects her passion for encouraging children to enjoy good, healthy food and to ultimately learn to cook that food themselves.

“That’s been the biggest impact of Food Bag, getting kids to cook at home. That’s had a huge impact and we get so much feedback on it.”

Husband Carlos is a key part of Lim’s food business as key marketer. He was in on the ground floor for the birth of My Food Bag. He’s also part of the tasting team for her cookbooks and gave his nod to every one that’s includ-

ed in Let’s Eat. When the couple met at Otago University, Southlander Carlos was far from a foodie – potatoes, swedes and roast lamb were more his style, Lim said.

A wife in the food business changed all that.

Lim may have come to fame through a TV cooking show, but she admits she doesn’t watch similar shows. She doesn’t have television, but food TV is fine if it encourages people to cook and inspires them to try different food styles, she said.

While there are likely to be more books in her future, Lim says she’s keen to be more involved in en-

couraging children to cook and she’d love to be part of a food revolution for the elderly.

“I’ve always wanted to create nutritious meals for the elderly.

My grandma used to get meals delivered and I thought, I could do a better job. The elderly are often forgotten but food truly is medicine. If you feed people good food they’ll get better faster,” Lim said.

She looks back seven years and wonders where those years have gone. She also takes immense satisfaction in knowing she’s achieved many of her food dreams, but also looks ahead and knows there’s much more she wants to do.

Food fundraiser a huge success Dining out for a cause has earned the St Joseph’s Celtic Netball Club a healthy new bank balance.

As the 2017 netball season wrapped up, players and parents decided to get a head start on the coming season by holding a fundraising lunch on Sunday that saw Miyabi restaurant hosting dozens of families from the St Joseph’s School community.

Almost $600 was raised with club secretary Amanda O’Malley saying the event had attracted a great turnout of families “And we’re appreciative that Ton (Kittikote) closed the restaurant for us as a private function. He was really generous with what he charged us,” she said.

“It was great to get the St Joseph’s community together after church and we got a good response from the whole school, not just the netball community.”

Chess pieces checked mate A package of chess pieces destined for a prisoner in Manawatu Prison held much more than pawns, knights and bishops when it was scrutinised.

Corrections staff and a detector dog found a cannabis leaf and oil in a package of chess pieces yesterday morning.

“Today’s drug find was great work by staff and the detector dog, who found the drugs before they got into the hands of prisoners,” says Prison director Mark Cookson.

“Prisoner mail and incoming property are regularly searched.

“The detector dog gave a clear indication on this particular item – when it was opened, it became clear that the chess pieces had been tampered with.

“In total the package contained 12.53 grams of cannabis leaf and 12.25 grams of oil.”

Contraband in prison includes tobacco, alcohol, communication devices, drugs, drug paraphernalia, tattoo equipment and weapons.

Two bodies recovered from lake Two bodies were removed from a lake in Halswell, Christchurch yesterday.

Superintendent Lane Todd said the bodies were those of a man aged 26 and a woman aged 31.

Family member Hinesh Kumar identified the bodies at the scene as those of his sister-in-law Sheetal Ram and her husband Avneel.

The couple are the parents of a 5-month-old girl.

A large group of family and friends formed a guard of honour as the bodies were carried from the lakeshore to the waiting hearse.

Kumar said Avneel was a “hero” for trying to save his wife after their car slipped into the lake, reportedly while he was giving Sheetal a driving lesson, about 5.45pm on Tuesday.

The family is devastated with grief and are being consoled by friends and family.

“This is obviously a very tragic event for the wider family, many of whom are here at the moment,” Todd said.

He said it was too early to confirm anything.

A crane pulled the car, which was found on its roof, out of the lake early yesterday afternoon, police said.

Police and rescuers at Westlake Drive reserve in Christchurch where two bodies were recovered from a lake.

The car was found in poor visibility at a depth of about 6m, Todd said.

He wouldn’t confirm exactly where the bodies were found, whether they were inside or outside of the vehicle.

The upside down red two-door Toyota with L plates fitted was lifted out of the lake by a large crane at 1.40pm yesterday.

Victim Support and police liaison officers were with the family.

The couple’s child was being cared for by family members of the Fijian Indian couple.

Family members have asked for time to grieve.

“He is a hero to us. He tried to save his wife. Not everyone would do that,” Kumar said.

Sheetal’s mother called him on

Tuesday evening.

“She was crying, saying they’ve fallen into the lake. They’re in the lake,” he said.

Police visited the family and told them what had happened and the family then went to the lake.

“It’s really shocking for us,” Kumar said.

“We’ve never expected this to

happen to us.

“We are totally lost. We don’t know what to do now, we don’t know what the next step will be.”

The close-knit Fijian Indian community in Christchurch is a big help, the family say.

They described the couple as “very friendly, very happy people”.

“They were really fun to be around, really nice,” Kumar said.

Sheetal came to New Zealand last year, but her husband has been in New Zealand for about five years. He ran an air-conditioning company and was well known in the community. He was teaching his wife how to drive so she could find work.

The police national dive squad were due at the scene early yesterday morning but were delayed, not arriving until 10am.

They went into the lake about 10.30am.

The family is critical of the time it’s taken to get to the couple.

“I just want to see them. That is all,” Kumar said.

The lake sits in the middle of a housing development in Halswell.

Residents say it’s a deep former shingle quarry popular with runners, walkers, cyclists and children feeding ducks.

Volcanic crater claims three Three members of the same family have died after falling into a 1000°C volcanic crater near Naples, Italy.

The tragedy unfolded when the older son, Lorenzo, walked into a prohibited area at Solfatara and stumbled into the crater.

The boy’s father then attempted to save his son, only for the ground to give way under him, causing him to fall into a 1.5m crater and be overcome by fumes.

Finally the mother rushed in to save them, only to suffer the same fate when the crater collapsed.

The steamy volcanic fields at Solfatara are scorching hot only a few centimetres below the surface. The family are understood to have died of asphyxia, possibly because of hot gases.

However, the official cause of death will be determined by an autopsy.

The devastating tragedy befell the family as they were enjoying the final day of their holiday before their young sons were due to return to school tomorrow.

Local reports have named the victims as Massimiliano Carrer, his wife Tiziana Zara-

mella and their son Lorenzo.

Fire brigade spokesman Luca Cari said: “Either there was a small explosion, or the ground simply gave way from their weight, and they fell into this hole. It was inside a fenced-off area.”

However, separate reports claim the boy did not enter the prohibited area at all.

Eyewitnesses reported arriving at the scene to find a young boy crying and asking for help.

Emergency crews descended on the site within minutes.

The Solfatara volcano is one of many volcanic craters in the Campi Flegrei area, about 20km west of Naples, which first opened up to tourists in 1900, according to its website.

Heavy rain in recent days may have also played a role by creating more openings in the volcanic field’s surface.

The accident happened at the Bocca Grande (Big Mouth), the largest of the fumaroles in the area, which the ancient Romans called the home of the god of fire.

The ground at the site emits water vapours of 160°C and gases including poisonous hydrogen sulphide, the website said.

The area the family was visiting is also known for a type of quicksand and is prone to crumbling, it has been reported.

Stillbirth discovery gives hope to women Stillborn deaths could soon plummet on the back of a breakthrough discovery by Australian researchers.

A simple blood test to identify babies at risk of dying in the womb could be just three to five years away after scientists pinpointed the role ageing placentas play in stillbirths.

The researchers discovered that placentas, which deliver oxygen and nutrients to unborn babies, age rapidly in the final weeks of pregnancy.

Crucially, they also found deteriorating placentas emit an enzyme called aldehyde oxidase, which ends up in the mother’s blood.

That’s the exciting part be-

cause it means a blood test might be able to identify at-risk babies, who can be delivered early before their lifelines fail.

“This is very exciting and I have to say it’s big,” says Professor Roger Smith, of NSW’s Hunter Medical Research Institute.

The blood test is already being developed.

Prof Smith was driving to work one morning when he had a light-bulb moment mulling over the mathematical definition of ageing.

“Most people would say they know what ageing is but it’s difficult to define and there is a mathematical definition.”

He was soon at work poring

over data with a new perspective and what he found surprised him.

“When I looked at the data on stillbirths – with that definition of ageing in mind – it screamed to me that stillbirth is related to the ageing of the placenta,” he said.

Prof Smith and his colleagues started looking at placentas from 37-week pregnancies and compared them with placentas from 39 and 40 weeks, looking for biochemical markers of ageing.

“We found dramatic changes in those last few weeks of pregnancy,” he said.

While the focus now is on the blood test – including how

often mums should be tested for the enzyme – other related research ambitions are already taking shape.

Prof Smith and his team also plan to investigate ways to suppress the enzyme if placentas start to age and deteriorate early in pregnancy, but that’s something that could take a decade.

About one in every 150 pregnancies in Australia ends with stillbirth, but the figure is much higher in most other places.

The team’s discovery will be published in the coming edition of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Mosul aided by declassification

Typhoon threat to Taiwan

A top American military commander has declassified 81 locations of unexploded bombs dropped by the US-led coalition in the battle to oust Islamic State militants from the Iraqi city of Mosul.

And officials are considering similar disclosures for other areas, in a rare step to help aid groups and contractors clear explosives from war-ravaged Iraqi cities.

Lieutenant General Stephen Townsend, said he was providing a list of geographic co-ordinates “for the sake of public safety”.

The list, he said, includes the type of munition and the latitude and longitude of the expected location, “so that duly authorised experts may more easily locate, render safe, and dispose of possible coalition

unexploded ordnance.”

Townsend told a small group of reporters in Baghdad last month that he would seek a way for the military to help groups find bombs that didn’t detonate after they were dropped in coalition airstrikes in Mosul.

The military does not normally release that list of classified data, although there are ongoing international and US programmes that work to clean up explosives around the world, including minefields.

The coalition’s unexploded bombs are part of a wider problem in Mosul. The bulk of the explosives remaining around the city were hidden

by Isis fighters to be triggered by the slightest movement.

Taiwan is preparing for an incoming typhoon with a range of alerts, cancellations and evacuations.

Typhoon Talim was due to make landfall yesterday.

Taiwan’s central government was contacting the heads of mountain villages, arranging free evacuations to shelters, monitoring rivers and mudslide-prone areas.

Taiwan is hit by typhoons nearly every year. But it has become much more aggressive about preparations since Typhoon Morakot battered the island in 2009, killing roughly 700 people.

Residents of the island are also taking warnings more seriously, officials say.

“For Taiwan, the most serious chance of a disaster is

heavy rain causing a sudden mudslide. Before Morakot, people were taking chances, sort of like gambling,” said Li Wei-sen, secretary-general with the government’s National Science and Technology Centre for Disaster Reduction.

Taiwan’s 23 million people are used to typhoons, but the island’s size and its competitive media environment ensures nearly everyone knows what to expect.

“I think we get information everywhere you go,” said Ku Lin-lin, associate professor of journalism at National Taiwan University. “Everywhere you go you see a TV monitor showing you information, even in the subway or on the street.”

ften when you least expect it, life is capable of throwing a curve ball or two your way and Tim Perry learned all about it this week.

The former Mid Canterburybased rugby player, who is now plying his trade at the top of the South Island and playing for the Tasman Makos in the Mitre 10 Cup, got the call that every rugby player in this country dreams of getting.

It was a call asking him to pack a bag and get on a plane to join the All Blacks’ training camp.

That’s akin to getting about 10 metres short of the top of Mt Everest, with just that one big push remaining before you can reach the peak – and, who knows, maybe that could happen for Perry because anything is possible.

Injuries to key front-row men has seen Steve Hansen ask for Perry to come into the training camp, which would indicate that if one more prop fell to the wayside, then Perry might find himself emulating the deed of his father, Grant and getting to slip into the coveted black jersey to represent his country.

The fact that his father was an All Black is a wicked story in its own right.

But Perry’s been keen to make his own path and not live in the shadow of his father.

And he’s done a mighty fine job of it.

A Super Rugby player for the Crusaders, and also the Blues for a season and a provincial rep for Tasman, he’s one of New Zealand’s most established front-rowers outside of the current crop of All Blacks and his elevation this week to join the best rugby team in the world for training is a perfect indication of that.

He might not get to run out onto the paddock and perform the haka, but just getting to where he has got to is a huge achievement in itself and one he, his family and the entire Mid Canterbury rugby region should be proud of.

As children, most youngsters dream of mixing it with the All Blacks, but only very few get the opportunity to do it.

Tim Perry can now say he’s knocked that goal off.

Get ready to vote J

ust over a week to polling day and the opportunity to engage, or not, in how New Zealand will be governed for the next three years.

I’ve seen a fair few summers and more than a few elections and I still savour the opportunity to add my voice to the chorus that makes up the total picture and decides which way our leadership will go and whether the ideals and principles that are held dear to me will get traction and better still, be embraced.

On the night, as the drama unfolds on the TV, the adrenalin kicks in and as the analysts reveal their predictions and swings, the mood usually turns to either elation or a deep mournful self-counselling if the pendulum has swung against my preferred.

I guess, if there’s one thing I could change about our system, it would be to find the magic bullet which will fix the problem of “voter engagement”.

It’s been to my eternal chagrin that too many people are just not engaged at all in the process.

sons for it ranging from a sense that “whatever I want will not make any difference,” to pure ignorance and downright apathy.

If there’s one thing I believe we should absolutely treasure and nurture in this country it is the right to partake in democratic elections, at both local and national levels.

Look around the planet and compare the environment you are blessed to live in compared with the many oppressive regimes and dictatorships pocketed across the globe.

People living under those conditions – no people existing under those conditions – would give absolutely anything to trade places with you and you are telling me you are not engaged?

Can’t be stuffed? Oh please !

I’ve been fortunate to work in

mainstream broadcast media for more than 35 years and I can tell you people are way more inclined to jump at the chance to share their favourite ice-cream flavour, tell you about their clever pet-tricks or call talkback about dogs crapping on footpaths than they are to comment about real-life nitty-gritty issues that are at the very foundation of how we live.

Politics is a word that is dirtier than the crassest swear words you can think of to so many people.

Yes it can be a complex, tangled web of issues, confusing claims and counter-claims, battles of ideology and perceived principles.

But engage, listen to it all, open your mind, weigh up the arguments, and don’t be “politically tribal” just for the sake of it.

Trust your gut.

Act on your instincts.

I’ve voted for Lange, I’ve voted for Key, I’ve voted for Winston and various others at different times over the years.

I’ve made my judgements based on shared values and vi-

sion as presented at those times.

If the Pink Dot Party largely matched my ideals, they’d get my vote.

As I say, I’m not tribal.

So by all means keep your preferences close, that’s your right, but open your mind and try and encourage others to do the same and get out and take advantage of something others had to fight for.

Women, for example.

Suffragette Kate Sheppard, I’m sure, would be happy to see you, man or woman, head to the booth and place your brick in the wall that will help build our collective futures.

And if it doesn’t go your way this time, at least you were consulted.

Thank goodness we live in New Zealand.

Compliance message to be shared Colin Williscroft

T

he latest report into Environment Canterbury’s environment and compliance activities is good news for Mid Canterbury farmers.

In fact, it’s the sort of information that needs to be shouted from the rooftops because that’s the only way some sectors of the community – particularly what seems like a majority of people in the cities, if they care to listen – will begin to understand the hard work that is happening on-farm for the good of the district’s waterways.

A summary of environmental compliance in the Canterbury region for the year ending June 30, contains a report that shows about 83 per cent of just over 1000 water consents in the Ashburton district are fully compliant.

The news was even better for our much-maligned dairy farmers, who bear the brunt of criticism and blame for what is perceived by some as the poor state of freshwater in the Canterbury region as a whole.

During the 2016-17 year examined, 199 dairy effluent discharges were monitored in the Ash-

burton zone, of which 196 were A grade compliant, one was B grade compliant and one rated a C, with the other being still under assessment.

That’s hardly the behaviour of a group who didn’t care less about the environment, if you’re going on the stories run in national media.

Of course none of this will be a surprise to the vast majority of farmers who do their utmost to protect the environment they work in. After all, it just makes sense to limit the amount of youknow-what in your own nest, so to speak.

The question remains however, and I know I’ve been here before, is how to get that message out to the rest of the country.

I wish I had a silver bullet I could share but unfortunately I don’t. Not one that’s going to work in the short term anyway.

As readers of yesterday’s Ashburton Guardian will know, I was at the public meeting on Tuesday organised by Irrigation New Zealand and addressed by Prime Minister Bill English.

While waiting for things to get under way I got chatting to a member of our rural community sitting next to me. I could tell where his loyalties lay, as he had his gumboots on.

And good on him, he took time out from what was probably a busy day to come into town and listen.

However, what he found frustrating was the lack of recognition being given to farmers for all the work they were doing to ensure freshwater was there for everyone, now and in the future.

Sure there were things in the rural sector to tidy up, he said, but the same could be said for those who live in urban centres.

In a nutshell, his message was it shouldn’t be a case of putting all the blame on one sector of the community and asking those people to pay, rather that we are all in it together and we need to work together for the benefit of future generations. It has to be a team effort.

The question is, how much of

that do people in urban centres understand that? And how much effort are they prepared to make, and pay for, themselves?

Arable boss steps down after 22 years Nick Pyke is leaving FAR.

Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) chief executive Nick Pyke has announced plans to step down from the role in the next 12 months.

Pyke, who has led FAR since it was formed in 1995, said leaving was not easy, but the time was right.

“Following a positive external review in 2016 and our recent successful referendum result, I am able to leave, confident in the knowledge that FAR is strong, positive and well-focused with strong support from its grower base and industry partners.

“I came to FAR for two years and ended up staying for 22 years. I think that is an indication of just how much I have enjoyed the role. I have loved working with a great team dedicated to research and extension and alongside some of the best farmers in the world, and hope to maintain contact with them through continued involvement in some aspects of the industry.”

FAR chairman David Birkett said Pyke will be greatly missed and difficult to replace.

“However, we are fortunate that his decision to leave has been well planned, allowing plenty of time for the board to identify a suitable replacement and for Nick to carry out a well-managed handover. He won’t just be walking out the door, it will be more of a transition process.

“He will remain in the job until a new appointment is made, and after that will continue on in specific project-based roles for a period of time.”

Three Mid Canterbury dairy farmers are standing for director positions in this year’s board elections for Fonterra and DairyNZ. Andy Macfarlane, who also runs farm advisory business Macfarlane Rural Business, was one of three independent nomination process candidates nominated by the Fonterra board for the 2017 Fonterra farmer directors’ election.

His nomination was made after being recommended by the co-operative’s independent selection panel and nominations committee, and was supported by the shareholders’ council, in accordance with the independent nomination process.

A registered farm management consultant, Macfarlane is a life member of New Zealand Institute of Primary Industry Management, a member of Institute of Directors, a director of Anzco, AgResearch and Ngai Tahu Farming, and a member of the Lincoln University Council.

He, his wife Tricia and their family, farm irrigated land focused mainly on dairy, but also includes meat and arable production.

Their farms are recognised for balancing high production with environmental outcomes. Their home farm, Pencarrow, won the couple the supreme Ballance Farm Environment Award in 2003, while a second property Kintore, that they have a major equity share in, won the Dairy Farm Award, Energy Excellence Award, and Integrated Management Award in the 2013 Ballance Awards.

Meanwhile Cole Groves and Mark Slee are two of six dairy farmers standing for farmer-

elected positions on DairyNZ. Groves is a director of Groves Dairies, a community member of the Canterbury Regional Water Committee, and is a director and immediate past chairman of New Zealand Young Farmers.

Slee farms 2600 cows with his wife Devon at Ealing. Former national winners of the Ballance Farm Environment Award, the Slees’ farm was used as a case study as part of the Farm Systems Change programme, which looked at ways to help farmers do better economically and envi-

ronmentally by learning from the strongest performers.

Voting packs for the Fonterra election, which will contain candidate profiles, will be mailed to eligible shareholders on October 10. Voting, which can be done by internet or post, will use the first past the post system and closes at 10.30am on October 31.

DairyNZ voting packs will be sent to levy payers on September 25 and voting closes at noon on October 24. Candidate profiles will be available on the DairyNZ website once voting starts.

Increased investment in farming fund The payback for food production, export earnings and the environment from turbo-charging a fund for farming technology and practice will be many times the investment, Federated Farmers says.

This week’s announcement from the government that it will lift investment in the Sustainable Farming Fund from $7 million to $20 million, while working with the sector, is a far more effective and useful approach than the tax and punish policies of some other parties, Federated Farmers science spokesperson Guy Wigley said.

Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy announced a cross-sector panel, which include representatives from industry, science and environmental groups and other stakeholders, will oversee what will be renamed The Future Farming Fund, driving advances in farming technology and practices while further reducing farming’s environmental footprint.

Since its launch 17 years ago, the Sustainable Farming Fund and leveraged sector support has made possible more than 1000 projects to lift the performance and sustainability of primary producers.

“We know we have some great emerging technologies and techniques like precision farming,” Guy said.

“We also increasingly have the latest communications networks as a result of our Rural Broadband Initiative. This fund will take that technology and roll it out around our farming sector.

“Food production is hugely important to this country. We are the world’s largest dairy exporter and we account for three quarters of the world’s trade in sheep meat. We produce high quality food more efficiently than anyone else and our farmers strive to do that with as little environmental impact as possible.

Telcos dominate complaints

By Paul McBeth The Commerce Commission’s annual consumer issues report shows telecommunications firms Vodafone New Zealand and Spark New Zealand still attract the most ire from their customers, although the rise of online shopping has seen a growing number of complaints in that space.

The regulator plans to put greater emphasis on retail telco providers in the current year, as the most complained of sector attracted 603 complaints in the 2016/17 year out of 7270 total complaints.

Of that, Vodafone was the most complained about with 186 complaints, followed closely by rival Spark at 180, about twice Two Degrees Mobile’s 88.

The commission said about a quarter of those complaints were over incorrect billing and a fifth related to various fees charged, such as late payments, credit card use, or paper invoices.

“Telecommunications continue to be the most complained

Rawlings said “consumers need to research the traders they intend to buy from and pay attention to additional costs such as booking fees, the currency they are paying in, and whether the fine print discloses they have been signed up to a monthly subscription.”

Appliance store retailers were the second most complained about industry with 403 complaints.

Common themes to trigger complaints were misleading pricing practices, especially during advertised sales, and misrepresentations over the Consumer Guarantees Act when returning a faulty product.

Warehouse Group-owned Noel Leeming topped the complaint board with 82, followed by rival Harvey Norman at 45.

New Zealand food prices rose in August, with fruit and vegetables, meat, and groceries such as butter more expensive than a year earlier.

The food price index advanced 0.2 per cent on a seasonally adjusted basis in the month, and gained 2.3 per cent for the year to August, Statistics New Zealand said. Fruit and vegetables cost 5.5 per cent more than a year earlier, while meat, poultry and fish prices rose 0.6 per cent and grocery food prices increased 2.8 per cent.

Butter prices hit a record high of $5.39 per block, up 11 per cent in the month and 62 per cent from a year earlier. The annual butter price increase is the largest in per entage terms since 2010, Stats NZ said.

Chocolate prices also rose 3.4 per cent in the month.

“We have seen butter prices ris-

ing lately due to New Zealand’s export driven market,” consumers price index manager Matthew Haigh said.

“Butter prices have experienced all-time highs in the global market, and this also drives the price here at home.”

Food prices account for about 19 per cent of the consumers price index, which is the Reserve Bank’s mandated inflation target when setting interest rates.

A spike in food prices and a recovery in oil prices earlier this year led to a jump in inflation, which

has been subdued in recent years, however as those movements flatten out the pace of CPI increase is expected to slow in early 2018, the Reserve Bank has said.

Vegetable prices increased 8.7 per cent on an annual basis, driven by higher prices for kumara, potatoes and cucumbers, and were up 5.4 per cent in the month.

Fruit prices rose 0.3 per cent annually, but dropped 0.5 per cent in the month, as avocados and strawberries became cheaper in August.

The price of chicken rose 3.3 per cent in the year to August 2017, but dropped 2.4 per cent in the month, while beef fell 2.6 per cent annually and was down 2.5 per cent on a monthly basis and pork dropped 8.6 per cent in the year.

Restaurant meals and ready-toeat food prices rose 2.3 per cent on an annual basis.

Turners raise funds to boost growth Turners Automotive Group intends to raise as much as $30 million by selling new shares to help fund future growth and provide more liquidity for its stock.

The Auckland-based company will raise $25 million through the placement of new ordinary shares at $3.02 apiece, which will be fully underwritten by the sole lead manager UBS New Zealand.

It also plans to raise as much as $5 million through a non-underwritten share purchase plan which will be offered to eligible shareholders and convertible bond holders, it said in a statement.

Its shares have been halted from trading on the NZX and ASX pending completion of the placement. They last traded at $3.36 on

the NZX. No price was available from the ASX where the stock was admitted for trading as a foreign exempt listing on July 27 to give it access to a larger capital market to support its growth.

Turners said the funds raised from the share sale will provide it with capital for investment to fund strategic growth opportunities, including continued expansion of its finance book, which is adding about $10 million of receivables per month. It will also allow it to pursue strategic dealer and property acquisitions to grow the distribution network and capabilities of the automotive retail division, and increase its free float, providing greater liquidity for Turners’ investors and broadening the company’s

share register by introducing new shareholders.

“The equity raising will enable Turners to fund its rapidly growing finance receivables, as well as provide capital for further strategic property and dealership acquisitions,” said chief executive Todd Hunter. He noted that the company’s recent acquisitions of Buy Right Cars and Autosure Insurance are both performing ahead of expectations.

Turners said the new shares will be entitled to receive the company’s dividend for the first quarter of the 2018 financial year, which is expected to be no less than the year earlier 3 cents per share payment, provided they are held on the dividend record date.

Spring is officially here. For us at the nursery, it’s the busiest time of the year.

And one plant that always flies out the door during spring and summer, is lettuce.

Luckily we have loads of lettuce varieties available at Awapuni Nurseries. In fact, as I write this, we have around nine varieties of lettuce on awapuni.co.nz. This includes your traditional varieties like iceberg and greatlakes, and more ‘modern’ styles like baby cos and mesclun mix. We also stock Chinese lettuce, a mixed lettuce bundle, and lettuce features in a couple of other vegetable mixed bundles.

It’s not surprising lettuce is a popular plant to grow at this time of year. They grow well in these conditions and, in my opinion, there’s just something about the warmer weather that makes you want to enjoy salad.

It’s funny now to think that back in the day we used to harvest the whole lettuce when it was ready. Those were the days when iceberg was all the rage! But now, as most of us know, with many of the types of lettuce you can just pick off the leaves you need at the time and leave the plant growing.

plant. That’s why I’m a big fan of growing a couple of several varieties. Our lettuce mix is perfect if you just want two or three seedlings of a few different varieties.

Once you’ve got your lettuce seedlings look for somewhere well-drained and sheltered to plant them. If you don’t have much space, try growing them in pots or even hanging baskets. The great thing about growing them in containers is you can make them easily accessible to your kitchen.

When you’ve found the right spot to plant, dig a little hole and plant each seedling around 20cm apart. Try not to overcrowd your seedlings to prevent fungal diseases. And watch out for slugs.

Water-based stains are also recommended for woods that have a natural resistance to rotting, such as cedar, redwood and cypress. Oil-based stains are generally recommended for decks and other areas exposed to particularly harsh conditions as they are not easily penetrated by the elements. There are some newer latex/oil stains that offer benefits of both oil and water-based stains.

Unlike paint, which coats the surface, stains penetrate and allow the natural texture of the surface to show through.

Whether you choose to accent the grain with a semi-transparent stain or mask the grain with an opaque stain, all stains provide some measure of protection.

Oil-based stains offer better penetration and durability and dry more slowly than water-based stains and thus maintain a more even finish.

The opacity of the stain determines the amount of visible wood grain on the surface. A finish with low opacity will have less pigmentation, resulting in a natural wood grain appearance. If you select a stain with a high level of opacity, there will be more pigmentation, resulting in the wood grain being covered or masked.

Opaque stains last the longest but hide the grain and the colour of the wood.

Oil-based stains are more durable than water-based stains and require far less maintenance.

Some stains are formulated to perform much like varnishes and soak into the wood but also form a film on the surface.

Sounds great, but the problem with filmforming stains is that when they eventually fail and you go to restain your deck or furniture, you must completely strip and remove the old film, and that’s a tough job.

If you prefer a splash of colour, a good enamel paint will give your garden furniture a durable hard-wearing surface that won’t rub off and will withstand the elements. Again, the key is surface preparation and a good quality primer/ undercoat.

7 It is easy to prepare a previously stained deck or furniture for recoating if you use a penetrating oil/stain finish, so let’s do that.

I’m old school and prefer oil-based, but the new water-based formulas are very good these days, so choose one and stick with it.

To prepare the surface, if it’s in a fair condition, simply clean with a deck cleaner or sugar soap, a scrubbing brush and garden hose off. If it has been a while between drinks, a waterblast is the best and quickest way to remove mould, moss and lichen.

Allow to completely dry then give it a light sand to remove any bumps or rough bits. This gives a better finish and allows the stain to soak deeply into the pores.

Wipe the sanded wood with a damp cloth to remove any dust and apply the stain with a brush or roller, working it into the timber. Wipe excess stain off with a cotton rag if you want a perfectly even finish. The longer the stain sits on the surface the darker the colour will be.

Some stains and certain colours cover nicely in one coat but applying two or more coats will increase the life of your garden furniture or deck.

The secret is keeping the stain up to them every couple of years so it becomes less of a job in the long run and looks the part.

Ashburton Musical Club The Ashburton Musical Club concert on September 9 was entitled “Student Showcase”.

It was a tribute to our Ashburton music teachers that we were privileged to hear from so many young and accomplished music students.

The evening began with a piano solo

by Lacey Cairns followed by two items

by Willow Diedricks on the violin.

Eliane Vinculado played works by Mendelssohn and Paradis which provided a delightful contrast with Samantha McArthur singing Mozart and Holmes.

In the second half of the programme Shayna Cairns on the violin played CPE Bach and Elina Chester performed Debussy and Bach on the piano.

The final item was from Emily Dodd playing Smetana and Bach on the violin. Peter Rumping also added a delightful vocal solo to the programme when he sang On the street where you live and When I fall in love”.

Alister Argyle entertained and educated the audience and performers with “Musical Facts” in the form of questions such as “How many individual pieces of wood comprise a single violin?”

The first of the three speakers in the series was Paul Millar from the University of Canterbury where he is Deputy Pro- Vice-Chancellor of the College of Arts and Head of the School of Humanities and Creative Arts.

Paul’s particular interest is in New Zealand literature and he has extensive knowledge about and publications on the work of James K. Baxter which he spoke about.

Paul stressed the importance of telling stories to help us understand our culture and he illustrated this by telling us his story of how he became an academic and found his passion in New Zealand literature, after years of work in the Ministry of Works.

This was a humorous story with examples of the issues of the time which many of us could relate to.

Paul spoke about the need for all to have social, cultural and creative intelligence to enrich our lives and he gave an example of Engineering and Fine Arts students working together on a project supervised by Paul and an engineering professor.

This was a great success with lots of

cross-learning and understanding and there is now a paper at Canterbury University using this model.

Current students have to face challenges with an uncertain world and mental health problems and the creative process develops the communication and social skills needed to overcome these problems.

Paul is also a great supporter of U3A with life-time learning and these activities contribute to why art is good for New Zealand’s future.

Jenny Harper “Looking Back Going Forward” Director of the Christchurch Art Gallery, the last 6 years since the earthquake had been traumatic, but with the re -opening of the Gallery in December 2016 and now the launching of an ambitious campaign to raise $1 million dollars for a Ron Mueck sculpture she feels cautiously optimistic.

“Everything changed in February 2011 as the Gallery became the Civil Headquarters. New ways had to be found to show Art. Outer Spaces, a programme of Art, was hung around the city, such as a

wall in Sydenham designed by Ron Newall, Rose Nolan’s, [New York artist] work on the back wall of the Gallery, a video installed in the upstairs room of an abandoned house and viewed from the street adjacent, and faces. The Gallery collection of 6000 was put on line to ensure its availability.

In 2013, Michael Parekowhai’s 1.7 bronze bull mounted on a grand piano, displayed to the people of Christchurch in Madras Street, became a symbol of hope in an earthquake ravaged city. A public fundraising campaign launched by a passionate Jenny Harper raised $200,000 in six weeks towards its purchase.

In December 2016, the Gallery was reopened to a large emotional crowd of staff and the public of Christchurch.

Visitors are increasing in numbers, the Len Lye exhibition is presently in place and Jenny Harper invites us all “to come and take tea”.

John links music to religion/church as he launched his musical career through playing the organ from a young age in church in the USA where he was born.

The church has fostered arts e.g. music, art, architecture. Music is one art that requires performance to bring it alive and John played the piano for us and played recordings of his organ playing.

John began with organ lessons as a child and progressed to university then employment in Chicago as musician and teacher.

Some highlights of his career have been time playing in a synagogue, travelling with choirs and now working in Christchurch since 2014.

John explained some aspects of Bach’s work, after playing a piece of his music, as he considered Bach divinely inspired and a musical genius.

Music is another language, which is universal, and John considers exposing children to a high level of music as soon as possible to educate them. He directs the Cathedral Choir which has male choristers and 20 young boys from Cathedral Grammar school.

John considers education in music the key to developing our individuality.

The rollers are out and all that is left now for bowls organisers is to keep their fingers crossed for good weather as the season starts this weekend.

Ashburton MSA bowls president turned green keeper Tony Inwood was out on the roller on yesterday, preparing the green for the opening weekend of the

club’s season. “This Saturday we have our opening day and we have a busy couple of weeks after that,” he said.

“Next week we have the Friday triples which is quite popular with the older bowlers and on the 24th we have the Peters Cup.” The Allenton Bowling Club are set to host the first round of Friday triples this week, along

with the junior triples on Sunday.

The Allenton club hosted their opening weekend on September 9, while Methven are set to open on Sunday.

Three clubs, Rakaia, Ashburton and Hinds are all set to host their opening days next week, on September 23.

When it comes to player numbers, Inwood said he hopes to

see a few more picking up the game this season.

“When I started in 1990, there was 120 members of the club, now it is probably about 30,” he said.

“We had the meeting of associations a while ago and in total we had something like only 330 affiliated bowlers for this season, so numbers are getting pretty low.”

She was Russia’s golden girl at the 2014 Winter Olympics, the 15-year-old skater with the Schindler’s List theme tune who won an Olympic title and a hug from President Vladimir Putin.

But now Yulia Lipnitskaya’s career is over, and she’s opening up about the cause – chronic anorexia.

Lipnitskaya says the eating disorder dogged her “not just for one year, or two, or three” and it eventually caused her to check into a clinic in Israel in January this year.

She’s now retired, hasn’t skated in almost a year and says she doesn’t miss the ice.

“Anorexia is a 21st-century illness and it’s fairly common. Unfortunately, not everyone can cope with it,” Lipnitskaya said in an interview released by the Russian Figure Skating Federation.

Lipnitskaya, the youngest Olympic skating gold medallist since 1936, wishes she’d spoken out about her illness earlier.

“My only regret is that I didn’t do this before,” the 19-year-old Lipnitskaya said. Her honesty is comparatively rare in Russia, where eating disorders usually aren’t discussed publicly.

Lipnitskaya’s last competition, a Grand Prix event in November, was a far cry from her Olympic triumph. Unable to tackle the big jumps in her free programme, she stopped the skate with tears in her eyes. The judges allowed her to resume after a break, but she finished 12th, in last place.

Officials said Lipnitskaya was injured. She entered residential treatment for anorexia in Israel two months later.

IPRC launched Mining magnate Andrew Forrest insists he has buried the hatchet with Cameron Clyne, and he’s urging the ARU chairman to endorse his new competition for the benefit of Australian rugby.

Forrest officially launched the Indo Pacific Rugby Championship (IPRC) yesterday. But instead of it being a rebel competition, Forrest wants it to work hand-in-hand with the current rugby set-up in Australia. Under Forrest’s bold plans, the IPRC will run after the Super Rugby season, and during the third-tier National Rugby Championship. Pre-season will begin in July, with the 10-round competition to run between August and October next year.

What’s next for Smith?

Life is good in France, so good Conrad Smith has no plans to return home anytime soon and may enter some form of coaching role when he hangs up the boots next year.

Smith initially signed a twoyear deal with Pau after the 2015 World Cup but enjoyed everything from the French culture to rugby so much he extended for one more season.

He always knew living in Europe; at the foot of the Pyrenees Mountains, close to London friends, would invigorate the next stage of post All Black life.

Speaking a foreign language was naturally challenging at first but Smith now orders meals and exchanges pleasantries with team-mates without being outside his comfort zone.

Some things about the contrasting culture drove him crazy but, after a while, he learned to savour the slow pace, two-hour lunch breaks, and even managed to sneak into the support vehicle for Nelson’s George Bennett at this year’s Tour de France.

With his three-year-old son just starting local school and seven-month-old daughter and wife settled, Smith is keen to further extend his stay but turning 36 next month means retirement nears.

“I’m pretty sure this is my last season but it’s the way you want to finish,” Smith, who will feature with Pau alongside Colin Slade and Tom Taylor at next year’s Brisbane Global Tens, said.

“I’m still enjoying it and feel like I could go on but also keen to call it a day while I’m feeling good.”

The Top 14 season alone encompasses 26 games – that’s before you factor in European matches. But crucially for Smith, local matches involve a simple bus ride or one-hour flight

Change in philosphy required

All Blacks great Conrad Smith is set to retire at the end of the French rugby season. which enables him to spend much more time at home with his young family. He certainly doesn’t miss jetting to South Africa on a regular basis.

“If I was back home there is no way I’d still be going. It’s a pretty good life so I’ll enjoy it while I can.”

Smith, a qualified lawyer who broke into the professional ranks later than most, always had life after rugby well sorted. All he knows for sure right now is he won’t be leaving France immediately after on-field duties wind up.

“I don’t have anything set in stone but even when I first started I was always conscious of working away at things off the field if rugby ever fell through. I don’t think we’re going to finish and shoot back home straight

away. The motivation to come here was to live here so we’re going to stay here for a while yet and see how things go.

“The attraction of home with family and friends, it’s always going to be big, but while New Zealand is a beautiful place it is isolated and things don’t seem to move along all that quickly compared to here so we’re keen to enjoy it for a while yet.”

Anyone who has come through the ranks at Wellington’s Old Boys University – the goats as they are known – is well aware Smith regularly contributed to the under-21s team over the years. Seeing a legendary All Black give up his time so willingly at club level spoke volumes of the man.

Privately he’s also donated time and money to several charities but those sessions at OBU

hint at what could be next for the 94-test veteran.

Pau, coached by former All Blacks and Hurricanes first fiveeighth Simon Mannix, would be silly not to tap into Smith’s knowledge.

“I remember coaching the Colts well and I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I still can’t see myself as a career coach – maybe it’s the fact I’ve spent so long with rugby already. I know there’s so much more to life and I want to do other things but the time I’ve had coaching has been really enjoyable.

“The club here is in a really good place so I am going to look at those things. There are a couple of opportunities with the club and if that fits in with family and everything then it’s a possibility.”

Decision to turn down NZ Rugby ‘easy’ Charles Piutau has revealed it was easy for him to put his family ahead of chasing further All Black honours when he chose to play in the northern hemisphere.

The 25-year-old utility back will become one of rugby’s highest earners when he shifts from Ulster to Bristol next year, Britain’s Press Association reports.

But he admits he spoke with New Zealand Rugby about returning to Super Rugby this year before deciding on the move to England.

“After catching up with people in the union it became clear that I didn’t want to go back,” he told the agency.

“So after that it was an easy option for me to stay in the north.”

Piutau, who played 17 Tests for New Zealand between 2013 and 2015, said he loved the All Blacks jersey and what it stood for.

“But when it comes to a place when you can provide for your

family and there’s a better opportunity, to me it was an easy decision. I’ll always choose my family over anything else.

“I’m so thankful for everything that happened in New Zealand, but as well as wanting to provide for my family, I also wanted to experience this side of the world.”

Piutau will join his older brother Siale at Bristol, who are coached by former Blues mentor Pat Lam. The younger Piutau has also taken a place on the players’ board of Pacific Rugby Players’ Welfare, the organisation to further the aims and interests of Pacific Islanders based in Europe.

“Joining PRPW is a chance for me hopefully to give back to the Pacific Islands community in a small way,” he said.

“For players to know they have a support network and a voice when playing in Europe, I think that’s important.”

Charles Piutau will become one of rugby’s highest earners next season.

The All Blacks are going through a bit of transitional pain as they revamp their attack game and blood a handful of youngsters.

Short term it may continue to be a roughish kind of ride for the national team, with a few more clunky performances and possibly the odd defeat lying in wait.

But longer term, the pain is probably going to be worth it.

Longer term, and by that read 2019 World Cup, the All Blacks are maybe going to reap the benefits of what they are attempting to do this year.

And what exactly is it that they are doing?

Essentially two things.

The first is that they are building the skills, experience and understanding to work their way through defensive line speed.

A rush defence is the weapon of choice for most international teams now and especially when they play the All Blacks.

There’s a reasonable chance that every team the All Blacks play this year will come at them hard off the line, believing that if they rush up, they can smother the key decision makers and play makers before they can execute anything.

The theory is simple – the All Blacks are the most dangerous side in the world when their attack game is allowed to flourish.

So don’t let their attack flourish.

Rarely in the past six years has any side been able to ‘out attack’ the All Blacks.

Australia managed it once in 2015.

They are a natural ball-in-hand team that want to attack and in that first Bledisloe Cup clash of 2015, they out-played and outscored the All Blacks in Sydney.

They opened the game right up, took risks and capitalised on opportunities better.

But they have only really managed it once in the past six years.

The other defeats the All Blacks have suffered since 2012 have been inflicted by teams that have closed them down with the excellence of their defence, quality of their set piece and physicality in the collisions.

England in 2012, South Africa in 2014, Ireland in 2016 and the Lions in 2017 all won by going down the low-risk, attrition route first.

They shut the All Blacks down and stifled their attack while chipping away at the scoreboard and then slowly increasing their attack width the more they controlled the game.

If the All Blacks can find a way pass and run out of the clutches of a rush defence they may well force the rest of the world to re-think.

What the All Blacks are also trying to do is to attack with such pace and directness that they can score on limited possession from almost anywhere on the field.

Again, if they can get that right, perfect it over the next two years, they may arrive in Japan playing a brand of rugby that no one else can contain or match.

The volleyball community in Ashburton is alive and strong, with the competition nearing its final night for year.

Committee member Dave Young said the competition started out as a way to support the

Ashburton College financially, but that it has since grown into its own independent operation.

“We have 12 teams of six and they are made up of people from all over the world,” he said.

“We have a Ukrainian that comes along sometimes, a Chilean, a Taiwanese girl, plenty of

Filipinos, and lots from the Pacific Islands.”

The season runs over terms two and three of the school calendar, with places often hard to get, with 12 teams the full capacity of the competition.

Young said that if teams were able to get in, he would recom-

mend it, and suggests that people head along to the final night on Monday for a look.

“The rough cost is $2 a night, so it is very affordable,” he said.

“It is a purely social thing, we tried it out with refs and that didn’t work, everyone just gets on with each other.”

Man U, Chelsea open league with wins Romelu Lukaku kept up the impressive start to his Manchester United career by scoring the second goal in a 3-0 win over Basel on the opening night of the Champions League yesterday.

Since joining from Everton in the offseason, the Belgium striker has scored in the UEFA Super Cup on his competitive debut, two goals on his first start in the Premier League, and now on his first appearance in the Champions League group stage.

Marouane Fellaini, on as a 19th-minute substitute for the injured Paul Pogba, opened the scoring with a close-range header in the 35th before Lukaku climbed between two defenders to nod home in the 53rd. It was Lukaku’s sixth goal in six appearances for United.

Test rugby stalwart Sam Whitelock has enjoyed a jam-packed 2017 campaign but was nevertheless a touch irked by his omission from the All Blacks’ squad for last week’s 39-22 win over Argentina.

The 28-year-old lock played 16 matches for the Crusaders this year, leading the Cantabrians to their first Super Rugby title in nine seasons.

He also played for the franchise in their loss to the British and Irish Lions, before pulling on the black jumper for three bruising Tests.

Since the Crusaders’ title tilt, he’s played in both Bledisloe Cup Test wins over Australia, but was rested for last Saturday’s Pumas clash in New Plymouth.

Despite his huge 2017 workload, he was less than pleased.

“For me, I just love playing, so given the opportunity I’d love to be out there every week, really,” the 90-Test Whitelock said.

“But it’s bigger than that, the team is bigger than the individual.

“Sometimes you’ve got to tinker with your week to make sure you help out in any way, whether starting, off the bench or not involved.”

Having been given the week off by the All Blacks’ top brass, Whitelock is a near certainty to return to the fold for Saturday’s clash with South Africa.

The two-time Rugby World Cup winner said the Springboks, in a rich vein of form this year, would provide a fierce challenge across the park.

They were likely to deploy the same defensive line speed that successfully blunted the All Blacks’ attack against the Lions, Wallabies and Pumas.

“If they’re bringing that line speed, we’ve got some things in place that’ll help us, and if they’re being passive, hopefully we can see that and read those cues early enough to exploit it,” Whitelock said.

“Teams are smart enough now to keep changing the picture.

“From watching their first couple of games, they’re playing typical South African rugby – big strong guys, carrying hard and using their skill.”

“I will still have a stable in Canterbury but that will be as part of a training partnership,” says Butt.

“I am getting close to announcing that and that will start from December or January.

“So I will still be coming home but for much of the last two decades I have spent nine months in New Zealand and three months in Australia, now it will probably

be the other way around.”

Butt has had enormous success in both countries with a string of harness racing heroes like Lyell Creek, Flashing Red, Take A Moment, Mr Feelgood and Mister D G but he has been especially good at picking the eyes out of the Australian riches.

And while New Zealand harness racing is finally going through a boost with some major stakes increases, Butt says the time is right for him to make

the move. “I am coming up 50 at Christmas and I want to try something different to invigorate my career.

“Things have stagnated here a bit because they go in cycles and we don’t have the same owners we had a decade ago. I have only bought one yearling at the sales here in the last three years.”

But the restlessness goes further than that.

“I have been doing this my whole adult life and I don’t want

to be going to the same meetings, especially some of the smaller ones, that I was 20 years ago in another 20 years’ time.

“I like the idea of Menangle, how it is set up with a barn at the track and racing there two or three times a week without as much travel.

“And in Australia there is so much more racing, not just for a top horse like Field Marshal but good bread and butter horses.

Sport Hiku joins Warriors Peta Hiku has joined the Warriors.

The Kiwis utility has inked a contract with the Auckland club, after gaining a release from UK Super League club Warrington. His signing will add competition among the outside back positions at Mt Smart, while the former Warriors junior is also expected to be the first choice deputy to Roger Tuivasa-Sheck in the No.1 jersey. The 24-year-old has agreed to a three year deal. He joins Tohu Harris, Leivaha Pulu and Gerard Beale as new Warriors signings for next season, while Adam Blair has yet to be officially confirmed.

Former Mid Canterbury rugby player Tim Perry is rubbing shoulders with the best players New Zealand has to offer after being called in to the All Blacks training squad.

Perry was making his way back to Nelson on Sunday after starting for the Tasman Makos in their Mitre 10 Cup victory against Wellington, when he got the call from All Blacks team manager Darren Shand.

“It took me by surprise and I was a bit speechless to be honest. It is a bit special,” he said.

“They just said pack some gear and come train with us as injury cover.”

Son of former All Black and Mid Canterbury centurion Grant Perry, he played one season of the Heartland Championship in the green and gold in 2010.

“He (Grant) is a bit of a hard fella so he didn’t say much, just congratulations, go hard and make the most of it,” he said.

“It is a big step up, everyone has their responsibility to learn their position and role within the team, and coming in half way through the two week block I’ve had a fair bit of catching up to do and lots of homework.”

As well as representing the Makos for several seasons, Perry spent one season with the Blues in 2013, and is currently on the books at the Crusaders.

He moved north to Marlborough after playing his one season for Rakaia and Mid Canter-

bury, a successful season where he was named in the Heartland VX, and was nominated for Heartland player of the year.

His call-up came off the back of injuries to the All Blacks’ first choice props Joe Moody and Owen Franks, who suffered shoulder and Achilles injuries respectively.

“I don’t know how long I will be here for, I am just taking it day by day, training as hard as I can to make the most of it,” Perry said.

Despite an inconsistent 2017 in which she’s twice finished runner-up, had a scattering of top10s and missed three cuts, Ko comes to the final major with yet another milestone under her belt in a remarkable career: she’s the fastest player to accrue $US8m

on the LPGA Tour.

In her 93rd start as a professional and with the $US186,096 runner-up prize last week, Ko beat the previous mark held by Yani Tseng, who crossed that threshold in her 98th event.

One thing helping Ko is the fact that three of her main rivals will not be teeing it up this week.

One of NASCAR’s highest profile drivers Danica Patrick has announced she won’t return to Stewart-Haas Racing next year due to a new sponsorship arrangement for the team. Patrick’s comments came shortly after grocer Smithfield Foods said it would become a primary sponsor at Stewart-Haas in 2018.

There had been plenty of speculation that Patrick, who lost her primary sponsor at the start of 2017, would not be able to fulfill sponsorships heading into the 2018 season.

Hartley to join Dixon?
