Three people assaulted by up to eight armed offenders has got the people of Ashburton furious about violent crime.

Two males and a female were assaulted by a group of people armed with baseball bats on Monday night.

Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said the assault happened at around 10.30pm on Elizabeth Street.

Police were alerted to the incident by Ashburton Hospital staff who reported it

after treating the victims.

He said the group was unknown to the victims, who were unco-operative and refused to make a formal complaint.

The victims were all adults and were unrelated to other events in the area involving youth offending.

Christine Richards, district co-ordinator of Neighbourhood Support, said people needed to co-operate with police and not be afraid to contact them immediately if they saw anything happening.

“I think we’ve really got to step up and

intervene and the safest way to do that is [by] phoning the police.

“People just don’t want to put up with that rubbish in their streets,” she said.

Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay said he had confidence in the police to get to the bottom of the incidents as they have done in the past.

Norovirus outbreak in Ashburton Hospital

She said Ashburton and surrounding communities was currently under significant burden from gastroenteritis.

Gastroenteritis is an infection in the stomach and intestines and symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhoea, pain or a fever.

The infection can last between 10 and 14 days and is usually caused by viruses like rotavirus and norovirus, and is spread through direct contact with a person carrying the virus.

To stay safe against the bug people are advised to cover coughs and sneezes and wash their hands thoroughly, especially after going to the toilet and before meals.

People who have come into contact with anyone who might be sick should be extra cautious.

Hand sanitiser containing alcohol can be effective in keeping hands clean if soap and warm water is not available, providing hands are visibly clean.

Elderly people, pregnant women and young children are most at risk and people are advised to drink plenty of water.

Ashburton is in the grips of a norovirus outbreak which has resulted in Ashburton hospital isolating a number of patients.

Jill Gerken, clinical nurse specialist based in Ashburton, who is in charge of infection prevention and control, confirmed there was norovirus in Ashburton Hospital.

“We can confirm that we have a number of patients in Ashburton Hospital with gastroenteritis symptoms, some of whom have norovirus,” she said.

Visitors to Ward One on Monday had to wear facemasks and wash their hands on their way in and out of the ward.

The nurse said unfortunately gastroenteritis was common in hospitals and residential health facilities.

“We have well-practised protocols that help prevent the spread of gastroenteritis in our facilities, which include patient isolation, additional cleaning and the use of personal protection equipment such as facemasks and other disposable protective clothing,” Gerken said.

Henna baby belly dream comes true

Tetiana Iebiedieva is 37 weeks pregnant and yesterday she decided to treat herself to something she has always been dreaming about.

Mehendi, or henna, is a paste made by grinding up the leaves of the henna plant and is applied to the skin with a cone-shaped tube, a paint brush or a stick.

The mehendi art form began in India and Iebiedieva said she has been interested in the Indian cul-

ture for years. “I also think the designs are so beautiful,” she said.

This is Iebiedieva’s first mehendi and she was grinning from ear-to-ear.

The time it takes to complete mehendi depends on how big the design is.

Once the paste is applied, it needs to dry for about 20 minutes, before being wiped off to reveal the final design which lasts up to three weeks.

Iebiedieva said she has been dreaming about getting a me-

hendi for a long time, but said she hasn’t been able to find the right mehendi artist.

Barma Rai is the woman who helped Iebiedieva’s mehendi dream come to life, in the Revive Hair and Beauty Salon on East Street.

“I’m 37 weeks pregnant so I could go into labour at any minute, any day and I really wanted to get this done so my husband can take photos of my belly, lots and lots of photos,” Iebiedieva said.

Arrests after burglary

Alcohol was taken from Robbie’s Bar and Family Restaurant in an apparent burglary on Saturday night.

Nigel Joyce, who has owned Robbie’s for 10 years, said this is the fifth time they’ve been burgled in six months.

He said a group of youths

kicked in the front door and stole alcohol.

He said previous break-ins were similar in that juveniles had broken in to steal spirits.

However, Joyce said he was pleased with police who were able to arrest two of the offenders after reviewing security camera footage.

said a group of youths was responsible for the break-in.

Two youths were arrested and appeared in Ashburton District Court on Monday and police are continuing their inquiries to locate the remaining offenders.

Senior Sergeant Banfield said the youths are believed to be between 13 to 17 years old.

He said police are urging par-

ents to make sure they know who their children are associating with and what they are doing at night.

He said the youth offending was creating unnecessary victims within the community.

Vicar keen to get church back following repairs By linda ClarkE

St Stephen’s Anglican vicar Joan Clark is looking forward to taking a church service in her own church.

The pink church on Park Street was shut in February 2013 because of suspected quake damage and services have been held in the adjoining hall ever since.

Clark has begged and borrowed pulpits all over town for weddings and funerals and is finally close to being back on home turf, with repairs and renovations since the earthquakes almost complete.

Carpet Court is laying special red carpet throughout the church this week and Clark says once the flooring is down and the electronic audio system tested, it will be time to move the pews back in and get back to business.

The red carpet, flown from England and made by specialist carpet-maker Wilton, will cover the entire floor, not just the central aisle; the original carpet was laid 53 years ago when the church was originally built. The interior of the church has also been painted.

Clark said the total bill was about $80,000, with some of the costs covered by insurance.

She said the life of the congregation had been changed by not being able to use the church, but other churches had

kindly loaned facilities when needed.

The church seats about 350 and is a popular place for concerts and music evenings because of its acoustics.

Clark said the parish was

planning a special spring festival to celebrate the re-opening, but would hold off fixing a date until the work was closer to completion. She hoped it would be within the next four weeks.

He said with the growing population in Ashburton and New Zealand there had to be a focus on bringing the ratio of police to general public up.

“As members of the community we need to speak about these crimes,” McKay said.

Jo Luxton, Labour candidate for Rangitata, said it was deeply concerning to see the rise in crime in the area, especially that of serious and violent crime.

“What is quite concerning about this assault is that the culprits can’t be held to account due to the victims being unco-operative, this may well be out of fear of repercussion, if it is gang related,” she said.

Luxton said she believes the area needs more police officers in the Ashburton district.

“Our police are doing their absolute best with the numbers they have but ideally we need one police officer per 500 people, currently the ratio is far higher.

The Government really needs to fund police properly to enable them to employ more frontline staff,” she said.

Dean Talbot, owner of Talbot Security Group said he was concerned about the assault and warned the community to be careful about what they said online because offenders read Facebook comments.

“I warned people about commenting on Facebook and now you’ve got people walking around with bats,” he said.

Mayoral candidates front up This week Ashburton’s two mayoral candidates, Angus McKay and Donna Favel, will answer some of the questions that are on Guardian readers’ minds. We asked for your questions and we’ve now put those questions to the two candidates.

Question: What are your reasons for standing for the mayoralty?

Angus McKay: I have always enjoyed helping people achieve success and getting involved in the development of the district. I enjoy the challenge! I find it rewarding when we find a way forward, from the smallest personal issue to the bigger issues at the council table.

A top priority for me is creating opportunities, activities and jobs for the youth.

Donna Favel: While our incumbant mayor has done a good job in chairing, leading and advocating for this community. I ask is “Good” good enough. There are still opportunities for improvement in leading this district, in areas I believe I have skills in communication and co-operation, that can benefit our district.

However, council is a team and no one of us is bigger than the team.

Question: The rumour is that if the temperature gets too high in the EA Networks Centre pool area the staff have been told to close the venue. Is this true? And what is the pool policy if it gets too hot at a national event such as the recent masters games. Closure would surely be an embarrassment to the community.

Angus McKay: Efforts are already under way to restore Methven to a top and tidy tourist town.

It needs to retain a higher level of service, like it had earlier this year, which I fully support.

Donna Favel: Methven and Rakaia both have townsmen. I have asked for a townsman in Ashburton, but this has not been supported by the majority.

I believe all townships deserve the same high level of service. However, this is also where the community can play a part, most days I walk and pick up rubbish as I go.

Question: With the popularity of the EA Networks Centre has any thought been given to changing the vehicle exit strategies, for example, making it a compulsory left turn onto River Terrace or widening the exit so vehicles can go left or right on to River Terrace.

Question: Can you briefly outline your work experience and business involvement since leaving school?

Angus McKay: Yes, thought has been given to vehicle exit strategies and discussions have been held with the New Zealand Transport Agency who controls River Terrace. I will continue to raise this issue at transport meetings.

Angus McKay: More than three decades of farming has given me extensive experience of climatic, market and trading challenges.

I have used these same skills as your mayor over the past six years

A man facing more than 50 charges since police uncovered more than $100,000 worth of suspected stolen property is expected to face more charges when he appears again in court later this month. Peter John James Gray, 42, has been in custody since his arrest on August 25. He appeared in Hastings District Court the next day facing seven charges.

Gray was further remanded in custody without pleas when he appeared on a total of 54 charges before Judge Tony Adeane in the court again yesterday. The value of property relating to the charges was about $124,000, mainly tools, machinery, appliances and building and furnishing materials from construction sites.

White Island active The volcanic alert level was raised for White Island after an ash eruption on Monday. GNS reported volcanic ash passively eruption from a vent on White Island, off the Bay of Plenty coast and raised the Volcanic Alert Level from one to three at 11.50am. GNS said current activity on the volcanic island was minor and were unsure of the implications for visitor safety. Civil Defence said there was no threat to public safety from the eruption.

Car thief hits police car A stolen car ploughed into a stationary police vehicle in the Waikato yesterday as the officer laid road spikes to stop the driver.

The driver of the stolen Subaru Legacy allegedly fled police in East Tamaki and drove south on State Highway 1 before crashing near Whangamarino Road, North Waikato about 1.05pm. Nobody was injured in the crash, and a male youth has been arrested and will be charged, police said.

Attacker arrested A Christchurch woman was kidnapped, assaulted and raped over the weekend, police allege.

Luke James Henry, 31, has been arrested for the alleged attack, which police say spanned Friday and Saturday. Henry, of Christchurch, faces 14 charges including unlawfully detaining a woman, three charges of rape, two of sexual violation, assault, and assault with intent to injure her.

Date set for CBD free parking trial Ashburton District Council’s 12-month trial of one hour free parking in parts of the Ashburton CBD will start on Friday, with parking set to be monitored by tyre chalking until new smart sensors are installed.

All parking along East Street – with the exception of some 10 minute parking spaces – will be limited to one hour of free parking and anyone wishing to park longer is encouraged to use the free carpark on West Street or the Eastfield carpark on Cass Street.

Environmental monitoring manager Rick Catchpowle says the 12-month trial will help council determine a way forward for Ashburton, following concerns that parking has been affecting the patronage of CBD businesses.

“Council is working on installing smart parking technology to

measure how long vehicles are parked. These devices will also provide data on how the parks have been used, which will help establish what actions should be taken once the trial is over.

“Motorists who exceed the one-hour limit will receive a $12 infringement, which will increase with the length of time overstayed,” Catchpowle said.

“Mobility permit holders will not be affected by the trial and can continue to park for free in these 60 minute spaces for two hours.”

The parking fee at the Eastfield carpark has been reduced from $6 to $2 per day on a trial basis until the end of November.

The pedestal parking meters on Tancred and Burnett Streets will remain operational during the 12-month trial, costing $1 per hour.

Mum, children hit by SUV A mum and her young children were tossed through the air and left lying across a quiet country road after they were struck by an SUV in a “freak accident”.

An 11-month-old baby boy is fighting for his life in Starship Hospital and his 2-year-old sister is in a serious but stable condition in Waikato Hospital after Monday’s horror smash on Otamarakau Valley Road. Their 33-year-old mother was yesterday in a stable condition in Tauranga Hospital.

The woman was pushing her children in a stroller on the side of the road when they were hit by an SUV towing a trailer, which

veered off the road.

Rescuers described finding a wrecked pushchair on the side of the road and a mother so badly injured she could not reach her children.

Pukehina Volunteer Fire Brigade chief officer Errol Watts said the crash victims had ended up scattered many metres away from each other from the impact of the SUV ploughing into them.

“They had been thrown through the air. When we arrived, there was a pushchair that was pretty mangled on the side of the road.

“The woman was probably 10m away from it lying on the road.”

Volunteers needed for planting

Incredible Edible Ashburton is looking for more volunteers to help with planting after a huge donation of plants from Bridge Street Nursery.

Founder of the Ashburton chapter of Incredible Edible, Katie Esler, said the project has been growing.

“It’s just been getting bigger and better and we are so lucky to get so much support and so many donations,” she said.

Esler said Ashburton Incredible Edible has taken off in the town and the amount of community involvement is amazing.

She said if people wanted to help out with the community

gardens, they should message the Incredible Edible Facebook group or “just get out there and start helping”.

Incredible Edible was started in 2008 in England and has since spread to over 100 locations.

Esler said there has also been a lot of help from Ashburton’s younger population and said it is a great way to start a conversation and know what people are putting in their bodies.

There are 13 Incredible Edible Ashburton locations and they range from apple, plum and walnut trees to a community garden in Tinwald and planter boxes in the CBD. Esler said Incredible Edible Ashburton is hoping to expand and said there are a couple of

ideas floating around about new locations. Since the launch of the New World Little Garden campaign, the Incredible Edible Ashburton Facebook page has been asking locals to donate their seed packets if they do not plan on using them, which has received a positive response.

“It’s fantastic to see New World promoting something for our children which is educational and sustainable.

“Teaching children how to grow their own food is a very important lesson for their potentially uncertain future.

“Plus the fact that all the packaging is fully compostable or recyclable again shows a level of responsibility that we want our children to see,” Esler said.

Play fight escalates into a court appearance A play fight escalated to carnage after a night of drinking for an Ashburton man resulting in a sentencing appearance in the Ashburton District Court this week.

Dean Geoffery Smallridge, 36, of Winchmore, was sentenced to 150 hours of community work on charges of assault, animal cruelty, wilful damage and possessing a cannabis pipe.

The court was told a “play fight” between Smallridge and the complainant got out of hand after she was poked in the eye. She went to bed but Smallridge was in the mood to argue and she left the dwelling.

In a fit of pique Smallridge smashed a television and up-ended furniture. The animal cruelty charge arose when, on the complainant’s return, Smallridge held a six-month-old kitten up by the neck and throttled it before dropping it on the bed, prompting her to call the police.

He has since paid for the damage he caused and has engaged with support programmes to address his behaviour.

Judge Jane McMeeken noted Smallridge’s 14 previous convictions, eight of which involved violent offending.

“You have a problem with anger and with violence – you could be looking at a term of imprisonment but for the fact it is three years since your last offence,” she said.

Judge McMeeken declined to settle for the recommended sentence of home detention, but added 12 months intensive supervision to ensure Smallridge addresses his offending and delivered a stern warning he could end up in prison if he failed to do so.

Smallridge is also banned from possessing or consuming alcohol or illegal drugs under the supervision order.

A request to hold back on a further period of disqualification for

an already disqualified driver met with staunch police opposition in the Ashburton District Court this week.

Jamie Graeme Cox-Blyde, 22, of Hinds, was making an emergency dash to pick up medication for 15 cows, described by defence lawyer Roz Burnside as “very sick”, before the business closed.

However, his trip was brought to a halt when he was pulled up by a police officer.

The officer concerned then drove Cox-Blyde to collect the medical supplies and returned him to his vehicle. Cox-Blyde had contacted a neighbour, who was waiting at the vehicle to drive him back to the farm.

He and another more senior employee worked to save the animals until 11pm but despite their efforts a number of cows died.

Burnside asked Judge McMeeken to refrain from a further period of disqualification given the circumstances, however police prosecutor sergeant Paul Scott opposed the request saying alternative arrangements could have been made.

He suggested the neighbour who arrived to retrieve Cox-Blyde could have been asked to make the trip, an RDI company rep could have brought the medication to the farm or a vet summoned.

Judge McMeeken requested an affidavit from Cox-Blyde’s supervisor to explain why these options were not canvased and set the matter down for a hearing on October 18.

Nathan Carl Frew, 32, of Rangitata Huts, sustained serious injuries as a result of hitting a powerpole on a rural road in May, while driving under the influence of alcohol. This week he admitted charges of drink driving with an excess blood alcohol reading of 164 millilitres per litre of blood.

fractured his pelvis in two places, dislocated a hip and had on-going medical problems associated with the smash.

As a result he must attend regular medical and physiotherapy appointments in Christchurch.

His lawyer Roz Burnside asked Judge McMeeken to take this into account when sentencing Frew, along with the fact he owes almost $15,000 to Electricity Ashburton to replace the damaged pole.

She asked the judge to impose an alcohol interlock licence.

Judge McMeeken pointed out Frew had three previous convictions for drink driving in recent years.

She disqualified Frew for a mandatory three month period after which he must obtain and use an alcohol interlock device which prevents a vehicle from starting should it detect any trace of alcohol on his breath.

He will also spend four months on community detention and undertake 12 months’ supervision, to include assessment and treatment programmes as directed by probation services.

Jesse Hemi, 17, of Allenton, thought it would be fun to joyride in a stolen vehicle in July but the experience landed her in the dock yesterday to answer charges of unlawfully getting into a vehicle.

When police, acting on driving complaints from the public, attempted to pull the vehicle over the driver sped off in order to evade arrest, however the driver lost control and hit a power pole.

The occupants of the stolen vehicle then ran off but were found soon after.

Judge McMeeken convicted Hemi and ordered her to come up if called within four months.

This means Hemi could be resentenced if she appears on other matters within that timeframe.

Todd William Davis, 24, of Al-

lenton, admitted a charge of intentional damage but denied another of obtaining by deception.

He was convicted and ordered to make reparations of $600 on the former charge. The other matter will be dealt with at a later date.

Emma Lee Biddle, 51, of Ashburton admitted cultivating cannabis. She was convicted and sentenced to complete 100 hours of community work.

The court was told police found 10 mature cannabis plants in Biddle’s garden in February. She was undergoing cancer treatment at the time and said the cannabis was for her own use.

Jayden Shane Alexander, 23, of Allenton, was sentenced to 60 hours of community work on charges of assaulting a police officer and shoplifting.

Judge McMeeken pointed out that Alexander’s offending invariably involved alcohol and a probation officer had noted his motivation to address the issue was low.

He must also make good $26 for the wine he stole from a supermarket.

Corbin James Davis, 19, of Allenton, was convicted of driving while disqualified. He was disqualified for a further six months and fined $200.

Stefan Craig Protheroe, 30, of Wakanui, admitted drink driving with a blood alcohol level of 158 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood.

It is Protheroe’s third such offence. He also admitted to careless driving. He was convicted and remanded at large for sentencing on October 31.

Arrest warrants were issued for Sonny Dee Te Tomo and Varnia Glass.

The Hamilton City Council will now be sentenced on Friday over the death of its zoo curator.

Mother-of-two Samantha Kudeweh died after the attack by Oz the male tiger in his enclosure at Hamilton Zoo on September 30, last year.

The council was to have been sentenced on a charge of failing to take all practical steps to ensure the 43-year-old was not exposed to hazards arising out of working with Oz. The sentencing was due to take place yesterday, however, Judge Denise Clark announced sentencing will instead be finished on Friday.

The council pleaded guilty over Kudeweh’s death at its last appearance in June. The charge, laid

by Worksafe NZ, carries a maximum fine of $250,000.

However, the council was to attend a restorative justice conference with the family, which will likely mean a big discount on any fine handed down.

Kudeweh was the zoo’s curator and a much-respected and liked member of staff.

On September 20 last year, Kudeweh, a married mother-oftwo, was feeding the tigers, cheetahs, wild dogs and other carnivores at the zoo.

About 9am, she was feeding tigers Oz, and Mencari, the female, who were in separate dens.

But for some reason, she didn’t shut the gates between the outside tiger enclosure and the den, meaning Oz could roam freely.

She went back to the enclosure about 10am and Oz attacked and killed her.

Kudeweh’s husband, Richard, speaking outside court in June, criticised how long the council took to admit guilt.

“There’s no amount of anything that the council can give to us that’s going to make a significant difference in terms of bringing Sam back, because that can’t happen, we accept that,” he said at the time.

US flexes nuclear muscle The United States yesterday sent two nuclear-capable supersonic bombers streaking over ally South Korea in a show of force meant to cow North Korea after its recent nuclear test and also to settle rattled nerves in the South.

The B-1B bombers, escorted

by US and South Korean jets, were seen by an Associated Press photographer as they flew over Osan Air Base, which is 120 kilometres from the border with North Korea, the world’s most heavily armed.

The bombers were likely to return to Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, without landing in South Korea.

Such flyovers are common when always high animosity rises on the Korean Peninsula, which is technically in a state of war as there has never been a peace treaty to officially end the 1950-53 Korean War. South Korea does not have nuclear weapons and relies on the US nuclear umbrella as a deterrent to North Korea.

Washington also stations more than 28,000 troops in the South, and tens of thousands more in Japan.

North Korea is keenly aware of the US presence on the peninsula and of what it considers the US nuclear threat.

Crime spree ... what is the answer?

shburton people are becoming increasingly worried about crime in their town.

It’s the sort of crime committed by young people who have no respect for other people or their property. They walk into people’s houses day or night and help themselves to stuff. They think nothing of vandalism for their own amusement.

Facebook was alight yesterday with comments following a baseball bat attack on three people on Elizabeth Street; that followed a weekend arson in Tinwald when a man’s car was set alight.

People in Tinwald are heartily sick of waking each morning to see if their street has been done over.

Many take extra precautions by making sure their vehicles are not parked on the road, that their driveway has a gate that is locked and that vehicles contain nothing that might appeal to a bored young mind.

Police have appealed to parents and caregivers to make a point of knowing where their teenagers are. Most law-abiding parents do know where their teens are but a handful couldn’t care less.

So what’s the answer? That has been debated over the decades.

Give the police more power and the courts more punitive options? A town-wide curfew where no kids should be on the streets after 11pm?

A kinder start to life?

The answer, according to organisations like the Brainwave Trust and researchers in Otago, is in the first few years of life.

A baby grows and adapts to its surroundings – a consistent, responsive, loving care in the earliest years of a child’s life can grow great individuals.

It’s likely too late for those committing crime on our streets.

They will probably grow out of it in 10 years’ time, but that is no consolation to the people whose property they are stealing or vandalising.

And it doesn’t mean we can’t do something about it. Police have asked for information and help and people should not feel afraid to come forward. There are many ways information can make its way to the people who need it, even anonymously.

YOUR VIEW Council buildings Paul Brake’s press release, which you reprinted in Monday’s Guardian, answers some questions to varying degrees and raises others. However, in one respect he is incorrect.

Referring to the heritage status of the former county council building and the Methodist Church he says Heritage NZ does not recognise any heritage or cultural value in the building.

LETTERS with Boffa Miskell, the district council’s consultant on the new district plan, to prepare a list of buildings for inclusion in the new plan.

The branch acted responsibly, realising that not every building it considered worthy of inclusion was going to make it. However, the final list did include the county council building. It was one of the few from the list that did not make it into the plan.

The cynical among us might consider it was dropped because the council at the time was negotiating with the licensing trust to buy the building and convert it into a hotel.

As to the church, if a church doesn’t have cultural values then no building has. You shouldn’t even to have to ask Heritage NZ on that one. However, as one of a handful of survivors of what was once Ashburton’s most iconic type of building it is certainly worth fighting for.

On another front, I note the council’s consultant for this project, Opus Architecture, is also the consultant for one of the options put forward, the Eastfield development.

The cynical among us might consider there could be a conflict of interest here.

However, both the Tesla and Panasonic house batteries contain lithium-ion batteries which does make me a little nervous.

Perhaps unnecessarily so: Tesla senior marketing and communications manager Heath Walker pointed me to the Powerwall manual which outlines emergency procedures for the battery in case of fire.

“Like any device that has electricity there is a chance of fire, however the design and delivery of the power with Powerwall minimises this risk drastically,” Walker said.

If the risk of lithium-ion batteries is well documented and has been known for years, where does that leave consumers who buy devices with the power source in terms of their insurance?

He did not think it would matter for house insurance, something that IAG’s national

technical specialist Chris Lysaght confirmed to me.

“For any house battery – installing and using these in accordance with the manufacturer’s/supplier’s instructions would not affect a person’s house insurance,” Lysaght said.

It’s good to see that insurers will cover house and other’s property in case of a battery fire, but don’t be tardy in returning an expensive phone like the Galaxy Note 7 to the manufacturer in case there’s a recall of the product.

Like any device that has electricity there is a chance of fire, however the design and delivery of the power with Powerwall minimises this risk drastically.

“If a phone catches fire we would not expect that to invalidate the insurance for the resulting fire damage to other insured property, but the phone itself may not be covered for its self-destruction.

“We would hope most people would take up any supplier’s/ manufacturer’s offer to resolve known problems in a recall situation,” Lysaght added.

In addition to the above, if you have any old phones or other devices with batteries lying in a drawer somewhere, don’t take the risk of them potentially catching fire and dispose of them.

Disposing the batteries could be a challenge, actually.

I’m not suggesting anyone should panic, but the lithium-ion battery disposal situation needs to taken seriously.

There are billions of devices with the combustible power sources out there, with more being made every day.

Unfortunately, nobody seems to have given much thought to where they’ll end once they’re no longer usable though.

The burning battery question Samsung’s having a rough time of it currently, thanks to a small number of its new flagship device, the Galaxy Note S7, catching on fire during charging.

The fires are due to a small fault in some lithium-Ion batteries in Note 7 devices; even though only a small number of fires have so far occurred, the whole affair is a disaster for Samsung which has had to issue a worldwide recall of the smartphone.

Not only that, but airlines around the world are banning people from using or charging their Note 7s on board planes.

Samsung will probably have to rename the Note 7 after the spontaneous combustion fiasco, and also take a hard look at its battery manufacturing processes because the risk of lithium-ion batteries catching fire is real.

If you want to see what it looks like when lithium batteries burst into flames, there are heaps of videos on YouTube that’ll show you.

Don’t try to poke a hole into the batteries or overcharge them yourself though: the combustion can be very violent and there’s usually lots of toxic smoke billowing out as well.

While lithium-ion batteries currently represent the best compromise between energy storage capacity, size and price, researchers are working on alternatives – mainly because lithium-ion batteries are known fire hazards.

If the risk of lithium-ion batteries is well documented and has been known for years, where does that leave consumers who buy devices with the power source in terms of insurance?

The number of the super-rich Kiwis on the tax department’s radar has jumped by almost 20 per cent in less than a year.

The Inland Revenue’s HighWealth Individuals Unit keeps an eye on New Zealanders who are worth or control more than $50 million and ensures they are paying the right amount of tax.

It looks out for things like big one-off transactions, unusual financial instruments, as well as the mixed business and private use of “lifestyle assets”.

The unit has identified 252 people worth more than $50m as at June 30 of this year.

That’s up from the 212 it was aware of last October and from 200 at the end of 2014.

These 252 super-rich New Zealanders are closely associated with 7676 entities, according to IRD investigations and advice manager Lynley Sutherland.

Get the kids to make-a-the-pizza W

ith school holidays on the horizon get the kids in the kitchen and free their inner pizza chefs.

Pizza can be as easy as one, two, three using bought bases, or take the time to make your own

dough.

Toppings are only limited by your imagination – feel free to mix and match or experiment with any of the following suggestions:

1T basil (finely chopped if fresh) Salt and pepper to taste ■ Place ingredients in a saucepan and simmer to reduce and thicken to a spreadable consistency.

Toppings

Basic dough Ingredients for one large or two small pizza bases 2 1/2 C plain flour 2 1/2 t dried yeast 1t salt 1t sugar 1T olive oil About 200ml warm water.

■ Mix dry ingredients in a large glass or plastic bowl.

■ Using a spoon make a well in the centre of the bowl, pushing the dry ingredients up the side.

■ Pour in the water and oil and mix to form a soft dough.

■ Place dough on a floured board and knead until smooth and pliant.

■ Place in greased bowl, cover and leave in a warm spot.

■ When the dough has doubled its size, punch it down and knead it again for a few minutes.

■ Cut in half for two pizzas or leave whole for a large pizza.

■ Roll dough out to form circles and transfer to a baking tray.

■ Assemble with your choice of toppings and fan bake at 200°C for about 10 minutes in a preheated oven.

Basic tomato pizza sauce 1-2 cloves crushed garlic 1 onion, peeled and chopped 2T tomato paste 1 can chopped tomatoes 1t dried oregano

Pesto, feta andz kumara topping ■ Spread chunky basil pesto over pizza base.

■ Add a single layer of thinly sliced cooked orange kumara.

■ Crumble feta on top and drizzle with cold pressed olive oil and bake for about 15 minutes at 200°C or until cooked.

Aubergine, artichoke and caper topping with bocconcini cheese Slice one large aubergine thinly, brush with olive oil and arrange in a single layer on a baking paper-lined tray. Bake at 200°C for about 10 minutes, until tender.

Spread tomato pizza sauce, homemade or bought, thickly over the base.

Top with aubergine, canned, drained and sliced artichoke hearts and capers.

Dot with thickly-sliced bocconcini cheese, sprinkle with olive oil and sea salt and bake at 220°C for 1520 minutes.

Mexican-inspired pizza ■ Mix together a can of chilli beans, one of drained corn kernels and one of chopped tomatoes.

■ Add finely chopped red onion and capsicum to the mix and spread over the base.

■ Sprinkle with grated Edam cheese and bake at 220°C for 15-20 minutes.

Vege pizza special ■ Spread a thick layer of tomato pizza sauce over base.

■ Cover with baby spinach leaves, a selection of chopped roasted vegetables (pumpkin, kumara, parsnip etc), sprinkle with grated mozzarella cheese and bake at 220°C for 15-20 minutes.

Chorizo, spinach and olives ■ Spread base thickly with tomato pizza sauce.

■ Top with baby spinach leaves, sliced chorizo and sliced, pitted olives. Add sliced button mushrooms if desired.

■ Sprinkle with grated mozzarella cheese and bake at 220°C for 1520 minutes.

Smoked chicken with cranberry, brie and mushrooms ■ Replace tomato sauce with a layer of cranberry sauce. Top with finely sliced smoked chicken, sliced button mushrooms, add finely chopped red onion and capsicum if desired, lastly add sliced brie and bake at 220°C for 15-20 minutes.

Calzone Calzone is the equivalent of a pizza pie created by folding the dough over to encase the filling.

■ Starting with the flat base, add your favourite filling on to one half of the base, leaving a 2cm border around the edge. Sprinkle with your choice of cheese, fold the other half of the base over the top of the filling and crimp the edges.

■ Brush with olive oil and bake at 200°C for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

Assemblies and events Ashburton Intermediate offers many opportunities whether they are intellectual or physical.

Our Assemblies are formal and occur once a week sometimes with an exception due to other events being held in our hall.

Every class has to lead an assembly and present items of their choice. There are also plenty of prizes to be handed out with the

Teachers have a chance to reward those who work hard through Merit Awards. These are handed out each week. Students who receive a Merit Award are acknowledged and congratulated by everyone present.

At each assembly we have a cultural item where students get the opportunity to speak in different languages and talk about where they have come from. We occasionally have visitors who speak at our assemblies to encourage us to get behind what they are doing.

We usually have a performance every term. An example is the cyber safety speaker who came in and talked to us about the importance of privacy online.

We also have events that happen once every year like Lip Sync and Year 8 Formal.

Every second year we have a major production with performances, for students, parents and senior citizens. Students have to audition and practise almost every day to perfect their part or item.

24/7 Youth Work Mentors We have three 24-7 Youth Work Mentors, Anna, Brad and Cornelius who work in our school.

Their role is to create friendly relationships with the students and to not only encourage them to get involved and enjoy school, but to give them someone to talk to if they have any problems in life.

Around the school they play games and activities with the kids at lunchtimes, join in on class time, run groups and sometimes

Sporting opportunities At Ashburton Intermediate we have many different sporting opportunities for you to enjoy.

Lunch time sport proves to be very popular and the variety of sports changes each term. For example students play volleyball, futsal, basketball and dodgeball.

During the year we encourage students to participate in events such as duathlons and triathlons. This year we also entered a team in a gymnastics tournament where we had many of our young gymnasts succeed.

Earlier in the year we had thirteen students competing in the NZ Post Cricket Cup.

Our team won the competition and have now qualified to take part in a tournament held over several days next term.

In Term 3 we have the opportunity to go up to Mt Hutt skiing for the day and this proves very popular and is a great day out.

Ashburton Intermediate provide a variety of sports for the students to participate in. Competing against teams from other intermediates has to be a highlight.

Many of our students continue their interest in sports for many years to come.

Pull Out Programmes POP – Pull Out Programmes happen every Thursday from 2-3pm.

POP give students the opportunity for extension, acceleration or enrichment.

Intervention programmes such as Shine and Strength are also part of POP that students can be selected for.

Some of the extension groups that happen during this time are

mathematics, choir, ukulele, writing and science.

Other options are learning languages such Japanese, Spanish, French and German.

For competition events such as Spelling Bee, Quizco, Aoraki Mathematics and Cantamaths students are selected to work in POP groups to prepare for these.

Kapai – values

Student leader Ben Middleton welcomes grandparents to our recent open morning.

Student leadership Here at Ashburton Intermediate we have a wide range of student leadership opportunities.

We have eight elected School Leaders along with two representatives from each class who become School Councillors. All of these students attend National Young Leaders Day. The School Leaders attend leadership training for a week early in the year that is run by Rotary.

Student Council meetings are held every two weeks with the Principal. This allows for a significant vocal point for the students to raise issues such as health and safety, talk about concerns or pres-

ent ideas for the school to consider.

Being one of these leaders means you often get to greet and meet people who visit the school.

School Leaders are in overall charge of weekly assemblies and have the responsibility for general setting up and operating the sound equipment from the booth. There are opportunities too for School Leaders to visit and speak to classes, or speak at special occasions like Open Night.

Other leadership responsibilities for other students at school include recycling, acting as a PE sports monitor and library helper.

At Intermediate there are a lot of fun activities we do. One of these is Kapai.

Kapai are small red tickets we get for following the school regulations and school values. You are rewarded by earning five house points and a chance of your number being drawn out at assembly.

If your number is drawn out you get to spin the Kapai wheel and choose to either take the envelope that has a secret prize or be tempted to take one or more of the prizes that are in the box.

All students are given a Values Passport that encourages you to do your best by following the values and getting the criteria signed off.

Once all criteria is signed off you will receive a McDonald’s voucher.

The movie treat that is part of the school’s behaviour management programme is looked forward to by the majority of students at the end of the term. This treat is for students who meet the school’s expectations with their behaviour.

For students who don’t meet the expectations they are placed on a level and if they reach Level 4 or more they are not able to attend the movie treat. We hope that students will learn from their mistakes and improve their behaviour.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 400 will take place at Chicagoland Speedway this Monday, with the race taking the name of the children’s animated television show that first aired in 1987. Ogier calls for more Three time world champion and current series leader Sebastien Ogier has called for new events to be included on the World Rally Championship calendar.

The Volkswagen works driver has joined the debate about what the calendar of world rallying should look like as the sport continues its renaissance. Countries like Brazil, Abu Dhabi, Russia, India and Canada have shown interest and would have varying degrees of appeal. Other nations like Japan and New Zealand are seen as safer bets to be included on future calendars.

The Waireka Croquet Club’s Have a Go Day proved a resounding success on Sunday with 32 players taking to the greens.

Ten new players also tried croquet for the first time on a day of superbly fine weather.

Scholarship for Milligan A delighted Jack Milligan is celebrating selection as the 20162017 CareVets Racing Scholarship driver to compete in the coming Toyota 86 Championship. Milligan, 20, was one of 12 aspiring racers seeking the drive who were preselected to attend the assessment day at Hampton Downs in the North Waikato. Murph going rallying

Volvo stoush heading to court Garry Rogers Motorsport will take legal action against Volvo to ensure the team can continue to race the two S60s in the Supercars championship next season.

Volvo’s head office in Sweden announced in May it would pull its funding and support of the Supercars programme at the end of the 2016 season. Rogers has been trying to speak to Volvo to work out an arrangement for the team to keep the existing cars to race next year.

Volvo’s racing partner Cyan, who supplies the engines to GRM, has said they intend to bring the engines and cars back to Sweden once this season is completed.

Rogers despite efforts to talk to Volvo in Sweden he hasn’t heard a thing from them and says legal action is the only way he can proceed.

“On the information we’ve received from our legal people we’ve now got everything we need to contest the decision,” Rogers said.

“We will now be proceeding and looking for a result.

Kiwi motorsport star Greg Murphy is looking forward to getting the competitive juices flowing again next year when he contests the New Zealand Rally Championship.

Murphy fashioned a superb V8 Supercars career – many experts nominate him as the greatest driver never to win a championship – but stepped away from the sport in 2014 to focus on a commentary and media career. The 44-year-old has been part of the Supercars television commentary team the past two seasons and fronts a television show on Sky but the draw of competition, a longheld passion for rallying and the temptation of a new challenge has prompted Murphy to turn from tarmac to gravel.

All Blacks on one of their better streaks

By Alex Mcleod Ever since the 41-13 demolition over the Wallabies at Eden Park last year, the All Blacks have looked unbeatable, and since that night in August unbeaten the All Blacks remain.

Between that test prior to the Rugby World Cup and Saturday night’s 57-22 victory over the Pumas in Hamilton, the All Blacks have won 14 test matches on the trot, and are eyeing up the world record for most consecutive wins by a tier one nation in the professional era.

The ownership of that record currently belongs to the South African sides of 1997/98 who notched up 17 straight wins, and should games play out accordingly for the All Blacks in their upcoming four matches, they will become the new titleholders with a win over the Wallabies at Eden Park in the third Bledisloe encounter in just under six weeks’ time.

With this notoriously difficult record to secure is yet to be achieved by the reigning world champions, it raises the question of what is the All Blacks’ most impressive winning streak they currently hold?

Three streaks in particular stand out when addressing this question.

A 22-8 win on Jonah Lomu’s debut at Lancaster Park in Christchurch was followed up by a 23-20 victory at Eden Park a week later.

Little did the French who took the field that day know that they would be the last to conquer the All Blacks on that ground.

Since then, a plethora of Tri Nations, Rugby Championship and Bledisloe Cup victories have

been sealed within the confines of the 50,000-capacity stadium, in addition to a historic Rugby World Cup victory secured there in 2011, in a final where – ironically - the match was won against the last side to have defeated the All Blacks at the venue.

The last streak the All Blacks claim ownership of that stands out as one of the more impressive in recent times is the streak that highlights their Bledisloe Cup dominance.

Since re-claiming the historic trophy at Eden Park in 2003, the All Blacks are yet to hand back the cup to their trans-Tasman counterparts, with the Kiwis in the midst of a 13-year period of dominance, and based on the recent performances of the Wallabies’ class of 2016, it looks unlikely that dominance is going to end any time soon.

Of the 36 Bledisloe Cup clashes between New Zealand and Australia since 2003, the All Blacks have won 28 of those battles.

Of the eight remaining fixtures that the All Blacks have not won, two have been draws, meaning that the Wallabies have won just six Bledisloe Cup matches in 36 outings since the recapture of New Zealand’s most prized sporting possessions in 2003.

All three streaks the All Blacks currently hold are beyond impressive, just like the world record for consecutive wins should the boys in black secure it in just under six weeks time.

Boks call up Alberts South Africa have called up versatile forward Willem Alberts as a replacement for injured lock Lood de Jager ahead of their Rugby Championship clash with New Zealand on Saturday. De Jager suffered a bruised knee in the Springboks’ 23-17 loss to Australia in Brisbane and has been ruled out for two weeks, the South African Rugby Union confirmed on Sunday. The 32-year-old Alberts, who has not featured for the Boks since the World Cup last year, can play in the second row, as well as cover the flank and number eight positions. The Stade Francais forward will be hoping to add to his 38 caps.

In brief Iran’s tallest man At a staggering 2.46m tall, Iranian athlete Morteza Mehrzadselakjani is the tallest athlete at the Rio 2016 Paralympics. In addition to this, the 28-year-old is also the tallest person in the whole of Iran. Starring in the sport of sitting volleyball, Mehrzad, as he is known, took up the sport five years ago, when a coach spotted him on television and identified his raw potential, thanks to his overwhelming height advantage. Mehrzad has his sights set on winning Paralympic gold at Rio, following Iran’s silver medal effort at London.

Kiwis best per capita New Zealand has won the most medals per capita at Rio. This comes after a successful weekend with a swag of podium finishes. New Zealand tops the list with nine medals, the equivalent of 1.99 medals per million. Slovenia is in second place and Jamaica in third. Kiwi athletes have picked up four gold, three silver, and two bronze medals. New Zealand is aiming to win 18 medals, including 12 gold.

Kiwis strike gold in Rio New Zealand has surged up the medal table at the Paralympics with three gold medals within 90 minutes at the Rio Games.

It was a golden morning for New Zealand with swimmers Cameron Leslie and Sophie Pascoe and sprinter Liam Malone all claiming gold medals.

Swimmer Nikita Howarth added a bronze to take New Zealand’s total for the Games to 13.

Pascoe became New Zealand’s most successful Paralympian of all time with victory in the 100m Butterfly S10 to claim the ninth gold and 14th medal of her career.

She has now matched New Zealand Paralympian Eve Rimmer’s record of 14 Paralympic medals, however by taking gold yesterday, Pascoe edged ahead of Rimmer in the standings, with a total of nine gold, five silver compared to Rimmer’s eight gold, five silver and one bronze.

Pascoe set a Paralympic Record of 1:02.65 and just missed breaking her own world record of 1:02.60 set earlier in 2016.

She annihilated Yi Chen (China) and Oliwia Jablonska (Poland) by more than four and

five seconds respectively.

Pascoe’s third gold in Rio came just 20 minutes after Cameron Leslie completely smashed his own world record to claim the 150m Individual Medley SM4 title for a third straight Olympics.

Leslie finished in a time of 2:23.12 followed by China’s Zhipeng Jin in second with Jonas Larsen of Denmark taking the bronze.

Malone then once again showed the sporting world that

he meant business by setting a Paralympics record winning the Men’s 200m T44 in 21.06.

Malone showed his true power moving through the race to cross the line ahead of Hunter Woodhall (USA – 21.12) and David Bahre (Germany – 21.41).

The three gold medals take New Zealand’s total gold tally to seven and the 13 medals total for the Games.

Howarth took out bronze in the 50m Butterfly S7 final after

setting the fastest time in heats.

Earlier Mary Fisher finished sixth in the 50m Freestyle S1 final.

New Zealand’s youngest team member Tupou Neiufi, made her Paralympic debut competing in the Women’s 100m Freestyle S9 finishing seventh in 1:11.21.

Sixteen-year-old Hamish McLean was in the pool for his second event in Rio, placing fifth in the Men’s 200m Individual Medley SM6 in a time of 2:59.81.

Both Paralympians did not qualify for their respective finals.

Howarth, currently ranked number 1 in world in the Women’s 50m Butterfly S7, will go into tonight’s final as the fastest qualifier in a time of 35.40.

Meanwhile over at the Olympic Stadium debutant Paralympian William Stedman set a Paralympic record of 5.35m on his first attempt in the Men’s Long Jump T36, surpassing his personal best by 13cm. Following Stedman’s jump, this record was then exceeded by two others.

Jacob Phillips ran his second final of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games finishing eighth in the Men’s 200m T35 final in a time of 29.10.

Paralympians flying in the 1500 metres The 1500m final for visually impaired athletes at the Paralympics was run so fast, the top four runners finished ahead of the gold medal time at the Rio Olympics.

Algeria’s Abdellatif Baka won the final in the T13 class, setting a world record of three minutes

and 48.29 seconds to claim gold, ahead of Ethiopia’s Tamiru Demisse, who took silver in 3:48.49.

Kenyan Henry Kirwa (3:49.59) won bronze ahead of Algeria’s Fouad Baka (Abdellatif’s brother) who crossed in 3.49.84.

At the Rio Olympics last month American Matthew Centrowitz

was the surprise winner in a time of 3.50.00 with Algeria’s Taoufik Makhloufi (3:50.11) and New Zealand’s Nick Willis (3:50.24) in silver and bronze.

Centrowitz’ win was the slowest 1500m winning time since 1932.

Incredibly Baka’s winning time

was only 16 seconds slower than the Olympic record, set by Kenya’s Noah Ngeny during the Sydney Games in 2000.

Baka said: “It wasn’t easy to get this gold medal.

“I’ve been working one or two years non-stop and it’s been very, very hard for me.”

James stable worth watching Punters would be well-advised to be taking notes on Roger James’ runners at Te Rapa today.

The Cambridge trainer will run a handful of promising prospects led by the resuming Von Tunzelman in The Riv Bar & Bistro 1400.

“His trial was only average, but it was in an open trial and he’s only a one win horse,” James said.

“His work between times has been very good and I’ve chosen to claim three kilos.”

Zy Nor Azman will partner Von Tunzelman, who was a debut winner at Te Aroha in the autumn and was put aside after finishing runner-up at Te Rapa at his next appearance.

“Whatever he does he will improve, but he is good enough to feature,” James said.

He also has future staying prospects Howland and Cool Tart to kick off new campaigns.

O’Reilly four-year-old Killarney, a

brother to his multiple winning stablemate Gracehill, will debut in the Te Kauwhata Tavern Bay & Restaurant 1200. He has won his only trial and will be ridden by Vinnie Colgan while Sam Spratt is on Doubtless Bay in the Distinction Hamilton $5KPunters Challenge 5 Nov @ Te Rapa 1200.

McIlwrick in charge Otago based junior driver Rory McIlwrick has made a flying start to the season and leads the junior driver’s premiership after the first month of racing. McIlwrick, who is attached to the stable of Graeme Anderson, has six wins on the board after winning the last race with favourite Arden’s Concord on Sunday at Oamaru.

It’s the second time he’s won on the horse this season and also the second time they have won at Oamaru. Arden’s Concord is trained by Anderson, and is a fiveyear-old Panspacificflight-Madam Maroussia gelding.

A weak trough over the North Island and a ridge over the South Island both move away to the east tomorrow, as a broad trough of low pressure approaches from the Tasman Sea. The trough crosses the country during Friday and Saturday, bringing unsettled conditions to most places, before it moves slowly away to the east on Sunday.

Tennis now Big Five?

Following Stan Wawrinka’s win at the US Open, it may finally be time to officially expand the ‘Big Four’ in men’s tennis to the ‘Big Five’. Since 2005, when Rafa Nadal won his first French Open crown, the Spaniard, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray have formed their own elite club, sweeping all but five of the grand slam titles. Only Wawrinka has repeatedly defied them. With his 6-7 (1-7) 6-4 7-5 6-3 victory over Djokovic on Sunday, Wawrinka captured his third major title, matching the haul of long-standing Big Four member Murray.

Culture ‘primary focus’

BY MICHAEL BURGESS The time has come for Stephen Kearney at the Warriors – and he feels like he is more than ready.

The long-time Kiwis coach was confirmed as the new Warriors head coach early on Tuesday morning, ending weeks of speculation following the disappointing end to the 2016 season.

Kearney has served a long apprenticeship before getting the biggest league job in his home country.

He had extended assistant spells under Craig Bellamy (Storm, 2006-2010) and Wayne

Bennett (Broncos, 2013-2016) in the NRL, as well as almost a decade in charge of the Kiwis, plus his ill-fated time as head coach at the Eels in 2011 and 2012.

“I feel I am ready,” said Kearney. “I’m excited about the opportunity. Everybody recognises the potential that they have.”

It’s been a long time coming.

After being a player at Mt Smart in 1997 and 1998, Kearney was linked with the Warriors’ coaching job at the end of the 2012 season, in the wake of Brian McClennan’s resignation.

He even came to Auckland for a tour of Mt Smart, but decided

the time wasn’t right to put his hat in the ring.

“I wasn’t ready,” said Kearney.

“Since then I have had four years at Brisbane, which has been a wonderful experience.”

The appointment also brings down the curtain on Kearney’s time as Kiwis coach, after a period which has brought a World Cup title, two Four Nations crowns and an unprecedented five wins over the Kangaroos.

“It was very challenging, a very big decision,” said Kearney. “[But] I wanted to make that group of players better and I am comfortable that I have achieved

what I had set out to do.”

While Kearney stressed that all his energy and focus was on the Broncos, who face the Cowboys in an elimination semifinal on Friday, he emphasised that improving the culture at Mt Smart will be his primary aim.

“For me it is about creating an environment that helps the players realise their potential,” said Kearney. “It’s about creating a culture which demands that.

“That will be my primary focus; a culture that demands a high expectation on how we live, the way we live and the way we perform.”
