It appears more Mid Canterbury people are being referred away from specialists and back to their GPs, according to a local doctor.

Dr Charlotte Cox said she gets referrals sent back to her “all the time” and most days she has some kind of request declined. The requests ranged from CT scans to x-rays and ultrasounds, as well as hernia and varicose vein operations – all things considered to be minor, she said.

Requests are often declined because of resource constraints or patients not

fitting the criteria, she said. Without an assessment, the only options patients have is to fork out privately.

She argued that while patients in need are getting turned away “they still seem to manage to do ankle joint operations in 85-year-olds”.

About 29,000 people in Canterbury have been refused a first specialist assessment (FSA) for surgery under National government, figures provided to the Labour Party revealed.

Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) general manager of planning and funding Carolyn Gullery said those figures equated to an average of

5500 returned referrals each year - a return rate of 10 per cent.

Labour Party health spokeswoman Annette King told the Guardian she believed an independent review of unmet need was needed.

GPs who had been in contact with her said they were now no longer bothering to send referrals, knowing they would be declined, she said.

One Rotorua GP was so fed up he termed what was happening a “scandal”, she said.

The latest Commodore will be the last one built in Australia, but Holden says the iconic name will live on. The VFII was unveiled in Port Melbourne in front of a collection of cars stretching back to the first Commodore built in 1978. “It’s certainly end of an era of the locally made product, but the Commodore name will live on once we get past the end of 2017,” Holden managing director Mark Bernhard said yesterday. Holden will shut down the Port Melbourne engine factory in 2016 and the Adelaide vehicle factory in 2017 in what Mr Bernhard said would be a “very sad” time for the industry. But General Motors has reversed a decision to send more than 100 powertrain engineering and development jobs overseas, announcing the jobs will stay in Australia. “We should be really proud of that. The reason we’ve been able to retain those people is because of the talent of the team that’s based here,” Mr Bernhard said. One of Holden’s new innovations is a bi-modal exhaust, which gives a V8 Commodore a quiet mode and a loud mode. “We can switch a switch inside the car (and) we can turn it from something very refined to a little bit of V8 supercar,” chief vehicle engineer Andrew Holmes said. Mr Bernhard said the 6.2-litre Chevrolet LS3 engine in all V8 models made the VFII the most powerful Commodore yet.

Nine days of Harry cost Kiwis more than $400k Prince Harry’s nine days in New Zealand cost Kiwi taxpayers $426,317 - more than three times what it cost Australians to put up “the people’s prince” for a month’s army exchange. The Department of Internal Affairs confirmed the six-figure bill for the May trip in a response to an Official Information Act request. The Prince’s Kiwi spend averaged more than $47,000 a day - and it isn’t the end of our royal expenditure as Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall are due in November. Harry’s visit came after he spent a lengthy army secondment in Australia, between April 6 and May 9, which cost taxpayers across the ditch $A115,000 ($NZ126,000). By far our biggest expense was moving his Royal Highness around, with more than $167,000 going on international travel alone. In comparison, when the Duke and the Duchess of Cambridge visited last year - and also brought their young son, Prince George - international travel for the trio came in at $102,000. Concern over opening hours

Ashburton’s art gallery is losing visitors because it and its downstairs neighbour, the Ashburton Museum, have different opening hours, says gallery curator Shirin Khosraviani.

The two areas have similar hours during the week, but at the weekend the museum does not open until 1pm while the art gallery opens at 10am. Both close at 4pm every day except on Wednesday when the art gallery

closes at 7pm.

While the variation in opening hours might not be great, it was clear that the gallery was busier when both were open, Ms Khosraviani said.

“That’s one question we often get, why is the museum shut.

We need to look at this from a whole building point of view, not just the individual tenants,” she said.

To some degree the situation could be improved if sandwich board signs were placed in the building’s foyer making it clear

that the gallery was open, she said.

In terms of visitors, however, since it had relocated to West Street visitor numbers had been significantly higher than in the old Baring Square building.

In its first five weeks in business after the May 23 opening, 3000 people had visited the gallery and that put it well on track to surpass its target of 13,000 visitors for the year.

That high visitor number was pleasing, given there had been some public negativity around

the building, Ms Khosraviani said.

“It’s what we call visitor threshold anxiety, coming into a cultural facility, a building that’s had a rough ride getting to opening day.”

While the opening hours might be out of sync at the weekend, museum manager Michael Hanrahan said changing hours was not an option at the moment.

“We don’t have the staff to open the extra hours,” he said.

Originally the museum and

art gallery had the same hours and that uniformity had worked well, but several years ago the art gallery opted to change its hours, Mr Hanrahan said.

“I’d prefer it if the art gallery and museum had stayed in line but we’re happy with the hours we’ve got at the moment.”

He accepted that the variable hours could create confusion for art gallery patrons who walked into the foyer and saw the museum was closed, but that problem could be solved by putting a sign in the foyer, he said.

This week it is business as usual for Party People Costume Hire, but from a new location.

At the weekend more than 20 volunteers hauled thousands of costumes for witches, fairies, police officers and an array of movie characters from the costume shop’s temporary Wills Street site to its new Victoria Street premises.

Party People Costume Hire liaison officer Jo Hooper said the costume hire shop had operated out of the Variety Theatre’s rehearsal room for the past three years, due to its former building on Victoria Street suffering severe earthquake damage.

The rehearsal room on Wills Street was a temporary location while the Party People premises was rebuilt, Mrs Hooper said.

It was a tedious move – but done efficiently thanks to many helping hands.

The volunteers worked all day Saturday and spent much of yesterday doing final touches, Mrs Hooper said.

“Everybody is just so helpful, you just say something needs to

be done and somebody will say ‘I’ll do it’.”

And it was nice to be back on Victoria Street, she said.

“It feels lovely, it’s a nice space, it does feel good in there.”

Rural youth swamp workshops

A series of mental health workshops targeting at-risk rural youth have had to change venue after receiving an overwhelming response.

Methven is set to become a testing ground for a new initiative that aims to provide mental health support for rural youth in the wake of the district’s dairy slump.

The three workshops, which focus on a range of youth and mental health issues, including drugs and alcohol, grief, and maintaining mental health.

The workshops have attract-

ed so much interest that their venue has had to move from St John in Methven to the Mt Hutt College library.

One of the initiative’s organisers, Suicide Prevention Coordinator David Cairns, said he was amazed by the response from the Methven community.

“I went around with flyers to put on noticeboards but most places already had them,” he said. “As well as giving out information, we want these workshops to tell us what concerns the people in and around Methven have so we can plan to address those concerns in the future.”

The new venue could hold about 50 people, he said.

“We know that fliers have been appearing on local Facebook pages and we are very encouraged by this response,” he said. “It shows a need, and that we are on the right track.”

The rural workshops are the first of their kind in the region, and if the Methven meetings prove successful, they could be expanded to other rural communities.

Youth health and development organisation The Collaborative Trust is running the meetings in conjunction with Pegasus Health.

There are three different workshops taking place in September and October.

Maintaining Mental Health, on September 16, will look at dealing with stress and what to do when coping strategies don’t work.

The second workshop, Alcohol and Other Drugs, will be held on September 30 and will focus on how they affect the brain, how they affect the developing brain, and what can be done to prevent damage. The third and final workshop, Grief and Loss, will be held on October 14 and will discuss how to help when loss occurs.

Mindless vandalism Police were kept busy on Saturday night, attending callouts of mindless vandalism. Sergeant Bryan Ennis said letterboxes were damaged in Allenton, while cars were the target in Hampstead.

A 19-year-old man was stopped with an excess breath alcohol level of 400 micrograms per litre of breath over the weekend. A second man, a 41-year-old from Christchurch, was found to have an excess breath alcohol level of 380 micrograms per litre. Pushbikes were also handed in at the Ashburton station and Sergeant Ennis asks that anyone missing a bike contact Police.

Fire claims house The Ashburton Fire Service was called to a house fire on Brucefield Avenue late Saturday night. The callout occurred about 10pm and it took firefighters just under two hours to bring the blaze under control. Ashburton’s chief fire officer Alan Burgess said there was substantial damage to a garage that had been redesigned into a bedroom on a back section but no one was hurt. “We’re pretty happy with where the start point was and things like that, there’s no issues surrounding that as far as we are concerned,” Mr Burgess said.

Weather woes The fine weather of the weekend will continue into the start of the week, but rain and strong winds are on the way for parts of the country come Wednesday. The high pressure system that brought lots of blue sky to the country this weekend will stick around until tomorrow, MetService said.

Make the most of the fine weather, because a frontal system with lots of rain and strong winds will move onto the South Island tomorrow and Wednesday, meteorologist Angus Hines said.

success and said much fun was had by all.

Adults and kids alike were able to purchase everything from food to arts and crafts as

well as take part in a range of fun games and activities.

Mr Smith said the fair was so popular the food stalls sold out and the auctions went well too.

While the amount of money raised was yet to be confirmed, Mr Smith was hopeful the school had done well if not better than previous years.

Patients turned away from specialist care From P1 The CDHB said there were several reasons as to why a patient might be returned to their GP for care.

In many cases specialists will provide written or phone advice back to the GP. Sometimes the CDHB does not have the capacity to see the patient, Ms Gullery said.

“We can only do what we can do.”

The CDHB wanted to be transparent as to what the public system can and cannot provide, so patients can make informed choices, Ms Gullery said.

The HealthPathways initiative determines how the CDHB manages referrals and allows GPs to access alternative support, without having to be referred to the hospital system.

An electronic management system can also tracks and

maintains referrals in the hospital system.

If the patient continued to become unwell they were seen in the system in order of priority and need, Ms Gullery said.

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman said increasing access to elective surgery was a priority for the Government, and the $400 million invested into health in Budget 2015 supported this.

Last year a record number of Canterbury patients received FSAs, he said.

“In the last financial year 56,527 Canterbury patients received a medical or surgical FSA compared to 42,095 in 2008/2009 – an increase of 34 per cent,” he said.

Ms King argued that nationally 160,000 people were refused an FSA. That was “just the tip of the iceberg”.

A security guard and policeman plunged into freezing waters to rescue a woman who fell off a wharf at the Port of Napier on Saturday night. Wayne Butcher was working as a security guard at the Thirsty Whale on West Quay Saturday night when he noticed the woman leave another neighbouring bar. Mr Butcher said he believed the woman sat down on the wharf and then tumbled forward into the water.

New irrigation system for marae

The opening of the Hakatere Marae wharenui is no closer than it was six months ago.

It has been delayed due to the ongoing internal fit-out, with the tuku tuku panels, painting, interior carvings and other general artwork yet to be completed.

Back in February the Hakatere Marae Trustees and Hakatere Marae Komiti confirmed the delay of the meeting house, Ko Te Amorangi, which was to be officially opened on February 7.

At the time, Komiti chairman Tipene Philip said it was not a decision that was made lightly.

Late last week marae spokeswoman Janet Benfell said no further progress had been made on the interior.

“We are no further ahead, in saying that we are in another sense…we’ve installed our own irrigation water supply with a 30,000 litre tank,” she said.

The tank was purchased with a grant from the Environment Canterbury Biodiversity Fund.

Prior to its installation a fortnight ago, the marae used the town water supply.

Now, Mrs Benfell is hopeful it will rain so the tank can be filled.

It will water the grasses and plants surrounding the marae as well as the several hundred metres of back boundary fence where trees and shrubs are to be planted this month.

In regards to the work that needs to be done inside, Mrs Benfell said there is no estimated timeframe for completion.

While she could not elaborate on the situation, she said it was “unfortunate”.

“We are in a real quandary, put it that way.”

They want to follow protocol and wait until the building is complete until they open it.

There are weekly te reo lessens held at the marae, and visits by various groups, but once it is officially opened people will be able to sleep in the wharenui, official welcomes can be performed and meetings held, Mrs Benfell said.

Market boost for Methven

No local complaints about Kiwi novel

Plans are developing in Methven for a monthly art, craft and farmers’ market in the town centre, as well as a fire, ice and lights festival next year.

Methven Action Committee had its fourth fortnightly meeting last week, and its 35 members were full of enthusiasm for a range of projects.

Spokesperson Richard Sheppard said the first Methven Arts and Crafts and Farmers’ Market would be held on November 22.

farmers’ markets three years ago.

“We want to try and entice more people to use the facilities in Methven,” he said.

Seventeen stalls were already booked, and because they were wanting to encourage people to hold a wide range of stalls, the price was just $10.

The market would be held in the courtyard behind cafes on McMillan Street, as well as in an empty building accessed via the courtyard.

The market would have a special Christmas feel on December 22, while it would not

be held in January, and there would be large market in conjunction with Easter when the Mountain Thunder was held in the town.

Other events planned included a Picnic in the Park featuring local bands and vintage cars, at the end of February or in early March.

Meanwhile, a lights festival for which the inaugural event was staged this year, was “getting bigger as we speak”, Mr Sheppard said.

This would be held on Queen’s Birthday weekend, and could be called the Methven

Fire, Ice and Lights Festival.

Local fire-eaters would participate, and Mr Sheppard was trying to source ice sculptors.

The committee was planning on holding a lantern parade as part of the festival. Children would decorate a paper lantern and put it on a stick with a torch, while their parents would give a gold coin donation which would go to Methven Care Trust. The children would then parade down the Main Street with their lanterns, finishing in the Methven Square whereupon the town’s winter lights would be turned on.

Four dead in beach crash Police have given more detail about a crash that killed four people at Muriwai Beach last night.

Inspector Mark Fergus said police were alerted to the crash by passers by and arrived to find four men dead at the scene.

Earlier reports of a 12-yearold boy being among the victims were incorrect, he said.

But he could not say how old the victims were.

He said police were still working to identify the victims and notify their families.

Police had recovered all four bodies.

“At this time we have recovered all the deceased, the vehicle is being removed from the beach and now we’re commencing our inquiry into what took place,” he said.

Mr Fergus said it was too soon to say whether speed or alcohol were factors in the crash, or if the occupants of the 4WD had been wearing seatbelts.

He said it was unclear why the crash happened.

Reports of the truck hitting a log had not been confirmed and police found no log at the scene.

An Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter spokesman said the crew was tasked to an area of Muriwai, about 20km up the beach.

It appeared a vehicle had been travelling at high speed along the sand, close to the water’s edge, where it has hit something - possibly hard sand - and rolled multiple times.

Public help sought over Dunedin robberies Dunedin police are looking for the public’s help in identifying two males who attempted two separate aggravated robberies at the weekend.

In the first attempt, the two males were seen loitering around the car wash facility at Mobil on Forbury Corner just

before midnight on Saturday.

The two males have been wearing items of clothing over their faces and entered the service station. They have then been confronted by the staff members present and fled the area.

Around 30 minutes later the

two males have attempted another aggravated robbery at the Lookout Point Dairy.

This time, the two offenders have presented an axe to staff, however they were fended off and locked out before again fleeing the scene.

Libraries around Mid Canterbury had not perceived any problem with Into the River before it was placed on interim ban.

The 2012 Kiwi novel, written

by Auckland-based author Ted Dawe, included sexually explicit content that was deemed by some organisations to be too racy for its intended teenage audience.

The interim ban restricts it from being displayed in libraries or sold in stores anywhere in New Zealand. If it is displayed or sold fines ranging from $3000 to $10,000 can be incurred.

Ashburton Public Library manager Jill Watson said while the book in question was not on the shelf at the moment, it was only removed due to the ban.

The book – which won the top prize in the Young Adult Fiction category at the New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards in 2013 – was in the adult area of the library, and that was where it remained until it was removed, Ms Watson said.

No complaints had ever been received about the book from the public, she said, and other librarians thought it to be of value to older teenagers.

“It will come up with an R18 [restriction] or something in due course and we will know where we are,” Ms Watson said.

The library had not removed or banned any other books that Ms Watson could remember.

“It’s not very frequent these days,” Ms Watson said.

“Occasionally we do get complaints from somebody who didn’t like the language and so forth but once they are put in the adult collection it really is a case of if you don’t like it then leave it alone.”

Ashburton Paper Plus owner Terry McNab and Mount Hutt College library manager Julianne McLeod both said the book was removed when the interim ban was put in place.

Mr McNab said Paper Plus had sold a few copies of the book in the period it was on the shelves.

Ashburton College was also contacted but did not respond to queries for comment by deadline.

Pink caravan set to bypass Ashburton

Mid Cantabrians on the lookout for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation’s bright pink caravan are out of luck this year.

The caravan, which stopped in Ashburton late last year, is headed off on another tour but unfortunately Mid Canterbury is not on its list.

It is intended to raise awareness about breast cancer and also inform women and men alike about the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

The caravan began its journey yesterday in Whangarei and will traverse through the north until the end of next month before making its way through Picton and Motueka.

It will make a three-day stop

at the Christchurch A&P Show before heading south via Geraldine and Timaru. Its final destination will be Mosgiel on November 26.

Breast Cancer NZ communications manager Adele Gautier said 32 towns were chosen this year, and the foundation made an effort to pick different destinations last year. She said Mid Cantabrians who wanted to view the caravan and resources on board were welcome to head to the A&P show, or catch it in Geraldine on November 17.

This year, the NZBCF is also asking locals who visit the caravan to sign its petition, asking the government to extend free mammogram screening to age 74, up from the current age limit of 69.

More under 13s seeing GPs

Three months on since children under the age of 13 have been eligible for free doctors’ visits, local GPs are experiencing a mixed bag.

On July 1, all Kiwi kids aged under 13 became eligible for free visits with their enrolled general practice and afterhours services, as well as free prescriptions. All of Mid Canterbury’s general practices opted in to the scheme.

its came in Methven GP and Pegasus Health Board representative Dr Gayle O’Duffy said she had observed an initial increase.

Last week she told the Guardian the practice had seen “a lot more” under 13s since July 1.

“Some of it is mixed up with the surge of flu patients, and parents feeling financially able to bring their children to be checked,” Dr O’Duffy said.

However, it would take a year to get the real picture in terms of patient numbers, she said.

Ashburton GP spokeswoman Dr Charlotte Cox said she was yet to witness an influx.

The Canterbury District Health Board also expected visits to the doctor would increase.

Health Minister Jonathan Coleman said 98 per cent of general practices across the country were now offering free GP visits for children under 13.

“Two months after the launch of free GP visits for under 13s, it’s fantastic to see such a high uptake in the scheme which now covers 99 per cent of chil-

dren under 13,” Dr Coleman said.

As at September 1, 19 general practices out of 1012 have chosen to not provide the free visits. Five of those practices have indicated they will opt in come October, he said.

In total over 400,000 children will benefit from the scheme being expanded from under six-year-olds to under 13s, taking the total number of children who are benefiting from GP visits and prescriptions to over 750,000.

Event centre punching above targets When it comes to meeting its performance targets, the Ashburton Trust Event Centre has received a gold star.

For the 12 months to June 30, it exceeded several targets set by its funder the Ashburton District Council. It might have missed the goal of 35 for the number of national touring shows for the year, but when centre manager Roger Farr presented his six-monthly report to district councillors last week, they agreed that target was unrealistic.

The 29 shows booked over the past year was a sustainable number, Mr Farr said.

“I wouldn’t want to push it any further. If you do, you risk community support, there’s a threshold for people with how many shows they’ll support,” he said.

Touring shows had to be balanced against the needs of local shows and events, with the number of those using the centre over the past year rising to 145, well above the target of 110.

“We regularly receive comments about there being too much on to attend everything and my fear is that we start spreading the ticket sales across a larger number of events to

the point where it is uneconomical for a promoter to bring their events to us.”

If that happened, promoters that the event centre had worked hard to secure would take Ashburton off their schedule, Mr Farr said.

The event centre had been forced to replace its radio microphones last year because of changes to government allocated radio frequencies at a cost of $18,000. The replacement had been funded through a World War One musical tribute show.

Ashburton Lotto ticket nets $166,667

One Ashburton shopper had a winner of a weekend, after purchasing a Lotto ticket worth $166,667 at New World Ashburton.

The lucky punter was one of five others who will be celebrating after winning with Lotto’s first division.

The Ashburton ticket was the only first division ticket sold

in the South Island with the others purchased in Waipapa, Auckland and Lower Hutt.

Ashburton New World Lotto 2IC Sue Heney said the store had no information as to when the ticket was purchased or by whom.

“We haven’t had it claimed yet but we are looking forward to them coming into the store so we can make a big fuss of them,” she said.

“It’s always nice to have a first division and it’s probably nine months or so since we’ve had one so it’s nice to have another.”

Ms Heney said she hoped it was a local that purchased the ticket, but only “time would tell”.

As for Saturday night’s Powerball jackpot, that was won by a lucky Hastings resident who took home a total of $8.1

million. This is the ninth time this year a lucky Lotto player has scooped the top Powerball prize.

Red Peak flag design already in business Popular flag design Red Peak is currently being used as the logo of an American engineering firm.

Peak Engineering in North Carolina has been using a logo featuring a red triangle, white chevron and two black triangles, since 2008.

Red Peak, the design that has seen a swell of support for inclusion in the referendum for a new New Zealand flag, is similar, but has a blue triangle in place of one black triangle.

Company owners Beth and Jeff Roach told Fairfax they thought their company logo’s similarity to Red Peak was “curious”.

“It’s obviously caught us by surprise. . . and we were even more surprised that people had nicknamed it ‘red peak’. Obviously we’re very flattered!” Mrs Roach told Fairfax.

The couple had received an email about the flag debate from a Kiwi on Wednesday.

Mrs Roach said she deleted the email, but more came through.

Mrs Roach said Peak Engineering’s logo had been used on client gifts, including stationary and wine.

She said it wasn’t trademarked and she would grant license to anybody willing to use it.

“But I think we need to have a conversation with anybody who’s interested in using it, just so we clear everything up and make sure it’s all above board.”

Red Peak’s designer Aaron Dustin told Fairfax he had taken legal advice and there was “absolutely no copyright issue here at all”.

He said he wasn’t surprised the design didn’t make the final four, but the following support for the design was because “it resonates with people”.

“They see something that represents their vision for New Zealand as well as respecting our past. Something about it is uniting, and there is a sense of ‘bringing us together’ that many have mentioned. That doesn’t come along often in national symbols.”

Julie Schmidt, the North Carolina designer who created Peak Engineering’s logo, told Fairfax she could see immediate similarities when comparing the two designs as drawings, but as a flag it was different.

“I think if they were an engineering firm in our state, that would be a concern. But a flag in New Zealand? That makes it kind of cool - and again, they could say it’s different because there’s a blue triangle.” - NZME

In brief Rival migrant demos Tens of thousands of Europeans hit the streets in both support and opposition to incoming refugees, as overwhelmed authorities in the German city of Munich pleaded for help in accommodating a fresh wave of arrivals. Gas explosion kills 85

By Sam Panthaky A powerful explosion triggered by a gas cylinder has torn through a packed restaurant in India, killing at least 85 people and injuring 100 others.

The restaurant building in central Madhya Pradesh state was being used to illegally store explosives that detonated in the blast on Saturday, vastly amplifying its impact and destroying neighbouring buildings, local authorities said.

“Initially we heard the sound

of (fire) crackers ... a huge explosion took place forcing people to run for cover,” Balram, an injured labourer, told Press Trust of India news agency.

The blast in the town of Petlawad occurred at about 8.30am local time as many office workers and schoolchildren were having breakfast in the restaurant.

Photographs from the scene showed corpses covered in dust and ash lying in the streets alongside the twisted wreckage of burned-out vehicles, as

victims described seeing body parts strewn in the street.

Television footage showed scores of people and rescue workers using their bare hands to shift mangled heaps of steel and concrete of the ruined buildings while police cordoned off the area.

Police revised the number of people who died down to 85 after earlier reporting a higher toll, after clearing the debris of the destroyed restaurant and neighbouring structures.

“Earlier we thought it was

104 (people who died) based on various reports coming to us, but now our own official information says 85 confirmed deaths,” ML Gond, an inspector in charge of Jhabua’s police control room, said.

A local magistrate gave the same toll.

“As for the site, it has been cleared and no more bodies are there,” Ashok Jadhav said, adding that around 100 others were being treated for their injuries in various nearby hospitals.

Crane collapse ‘act of God’ The collapse of a construction crane that killed 107 people at Mecca’s Grand Mosque was “an act of God” and not due to a technical fault, an engineer for the developer says.

The massive red and white crane, which crashed into the court of the mosque during a rainstorm and high winds at the weekend, also injured around 200 people.

The engineer for Saudi Binladin Group, which is carrying out a massive expansion of the mosque, said the crane, like many others on the project, had been there for three or four years without any problem.

“It was not a technical issue at all,” said the engineer, who asked not to be identified. “I can only say that what happened was beyond the power of humans. It was an act of God and, to my knowledge, there was no human fault in it at all.”

Authorities are investigating the tragedy, which occurred as hundreds

of thousands of Muslims from around the world were gathering for the annual hajj pilgrimage.

The engineer said the crane was the main one used on work to expand the tawaf, or circumambulation area around the Kaaba - a massive cubed structure at the centre of the mosque that is a focal point of worship.

“It has been installed in a way so as not to affect the hundreds of thousands of worshippers in the area and in an extremely professional way,” he said. “This is the most difficult place to work in, due to the huge numbers of people in the area.”

The crane’s heavy hook, which is able to lift hundreds of tonnes, began swaying and moved the whole crane with it, toppling into the mosque, the engineer explained.

A witness said the accident occurred during winds that were so strong they shook his car and tossed billboards around.

Septuplets born A woman has given birth to septuplets in Mexico, but one of the infants has died. The Guanajuato Health Secretariat reported the Caesarean-section births of four girls and three boys to Maria del Rosario Hernandez Tovar, a 30-year-old who had undergone fertility treatment. The Celaya Maternity Hospital director, Jose Luis Hernandez, said that “we attended the birth of six babies by the woman, the problem is that it was too soon”, a reference to the gestation period of just 25-and-ahalf weeks. Hospital officials said the mother is in weak but stable condition.

Argument turns ugly An argument at a wedding has turned ugly after a man allegedly drove a car at guests, including the bride. The man allegedly got into a fight with fellow guests at the wedding at Camden, in Sydney’s southwest, on Saturday night, then got in a car and drove at two people, just missing them before reversing at high speed towards another group of guests that included the bride. No one was hit and a 55-year-old man was later arrested and charged with dangerous driving offences and drug possession.

Show of support needed for robbery victims Stu Oldham

C

hilling incidents at local small businesses reinforce our collective duty to do what we can to help keep our neighbourhoods safe because right now, some need help to address crime and to restore their confidence that they are not in this alone.

Last week, the owner of the Creek Road Dairy was allegedly held up at knifepoint by someone who wanted cash from the till and the business’ safe.

She was grabbed and menaced with a long knife. Her ordeal ended when she pressed a panic button, hoping to startle the offender so her teenaged employee could run away.

Maria Martinez was brave and level-headed when serious crime visited her suburban, neighbourhood store. But bravery aside, she and her employee are still victims.

They feared for their safety their lives - and they were still shaken long after the police and security staff quickly apprehended the alleged offender.

This, for running a convenience store on a relatively quiet street in a relatively safe town. But then crime is making victims of others doing the same thing.

In Mayfield, thieves tried to break into the Udder Dairy and in Hinds the convenience store was again robbed of thousands of dollars of cigarettes. Hinds store owner Sunil Shah has late-night security camera footage showing a pair of hooded figures trying to bust their way into the shop.

The public reaction in the wake of these incidents - just the latest to affect local businesses - suggests neighbourhoods have rallied for their stores. They are getting concern and support and, once again, people might now be more likely to react when things do not seem right.

Keeping an eye out mightn’t stop those hell-bent on committing a crime but it will make some think twice. And that might be enough.

t doesn’t seem like a day goes by when there isn’t a discussion about what’s happening in the economy – locally or globally.

There is a lot of volatility in financial markets around the world and there’s no doubt the recent drop in international dairy prices will hurt farmers’ incomes and that in turn will have an effect on other businesses around the country.

But if we take a step back, it’s important to keep a few things in mind.

The first is that – as with all New Zealand’s main exports – dairy prices are cyclical.

They go up and they go down.

Dairy prices will recover over time and the longer-term outlook for the industry is strong.

It’s also important we don’t talk our economy down, and keep things in perspective.

We have an economy that is far more productive, more efficient, and more globally connected than ever before.

We have been out-performing the OECD in recent years and a period of more moderate growth is only to be expected as our economy adjusts to the dairy industry’s income shock.

As Asian countries continue to grow and get wealthier they will want more high-quality, safe, and nutritious foods – like our dairy products.

The Government is helping to prepare New Zealand to take advantage of these opportunities, for example through negotiating better access to markets in Asia and the Pacific.

Also, while dairy is down at the moment, prices for other exports are up. Beef prices for New Zealand farmers, for example, have risen to record highs.

Horticulture has had a very good year, with total earnings topping $7.5 billion for the first time. Kiwifruit in particular has bounced back strongly from PSA, and now amounts to over $1 billion in exports.

Tourism is booming. Record

numbers of tourists are coming to New Zealand, they’re staying for longer, and spending more than ever before. Visitor spending reached over $8 billion over the last year, which is up more than 20 per cent on the previous year.

So, while dairy is a very important industry for New Zealand, there are a lot more strings in the country’s bow.

New Zealand has a flexible, responsive economy.

This has allowed the Kiwi dollar to fall around 25 per cent against the US, compared to a year ago. This drop in the exchange rate helps offset the fall in dairy prices, and means all exporters get better returns for the goods and services they sell overseas.

Interest rate cuts will also help boost the economy.

Economists are still forecasting growth of around 2 to 2.5 per cent a year, which is good, solid, and sustainable. This growth will build on the good economic performance New Zealand has experienced over the past few years.

Hundreds of thousands of new jobs have been created.

Wages have been rising faster than inflation.

Households are saving a bit more and paying down debt, which gives them a greater sense of security.

And New Zealanders are staying home or returning in significant numbers because opportunities are better here than elsewhere. All of these factors mean that we have good cause to be optimistic and confident about New Zealand’s future.

Add red wine to pan and scrape to loosen the caramelised good stuff off the bottom of it.

Add tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, beef stock and bring to simmer.

In a separate pan brown mince on high heat. When cooked add

to tomato base.

■ Cook out for 15-20 minutes, stirring frequently and season to taste with salt and pepper.

■ Two minutes before serving, add the shredded basil.

■ Serve over cooked pasta of your choice and garnish with shaved parmesan cheese (optional).

Road tripping in Colorado

Colorado’s Million Dollar Highway is full of twists, turns and climbs as it winds its way through the hills.

T

he truck is barrelling down Million Dollar Highway as if a million dollars really were at stake.

With its trailer weighed down heavily by a load of logs, it navigates the twists and turns of the narrow mountain road.

Coming up on the other side is a lumbering recreational vehicle (known in America as an RV) and the road is narrowing.

It’s a white-knuckle moment for the vacationing driver as the two vehicles slip past each other without incident.

Including the bicycle rack attached at the rear, the RV is 11 metres long.

Driving one is not an easy task, especially taking curves.

The turning radius of an RV is three times that of a car.

After a long day of driving west from Denver, the first destination of our trip – the Colorado National Monument near Grand Junction – is reached by evening.

A stroll at the 1500-metreelevation plateau the next morning reveals that the RV was parked only a few metres from the edge of a precipice.

Stefan Weissenborn hopped behind the wheel of an 11 metre RV and hit the Million Dollar Highway in Colorado to discover the sights.

The view of the Colorado Valley is a magnificent one.

On the horizon are the jagged peaks of the Rocky Mountains, partially enshrouded in mist.

Up closer are sandstone monoliths towering as high as 150 metres. These start to turn red in the first rays of the morning sun.

Rim Rock Drive, completed in 1950 and running southwards along the edge of the canyon, reaches elevations of 2000 metres. The RV passes huge boulders the size of houses as it finally reaches the valley and heads to Ouray.

The town, at an elevation of 2350 metres, once thrived on gold and silver mining. Today, tourism is the town’s gold.

The next morning, we travellers pay a visit to Linda Wright-Minter, owner of the Wiesbaden Hotel. It’s a rather nondescript-looking wooden house from the outside, but

inside it’s another story.

There’s a spa area in the cellar called Vapour Cave where the smooth walls of rock are moist and glistening in the light of a mine lamp.

Waters from a hot springs – first discovered by the native Ute people around 1800 – are awaiting in the wading pool.

A 10-minute soak in the hot spring water is as relaxing as a visit to a sauna.

After the nerve-racking stretch on Million Dollar Highway through the San Juan Mountains, we travellers will arrive in Silverton, 30 kilometres south of Ouray.

It’s a route offering breathtaking vistas of snow-capped peaks, yellow-coloured mountain slopes and dark green Douglas firs.

After Silverton, the RV heads towards Pagosa Springs and The Springs Resort & Spa on the banks of the San Juan

River. This is one of three facilities in the town that taps into the hot springs waters for their swimming pools. Clouds of mist hovering above the 23 open-air pools are illuminated when the first rays of the sun peek down from the nearby mountaintops.

Besides the hot spring water, the pools are also fed from the river, so that temperatures in the pools range between 25 and 45 degrees Celsius.

After a drive of some 200 kilometres, the RV arrives at the Pinyon Flats Campground, with its supra-dimensional parking slots, in the Great Sand Dunes National Park. It is already dark.

In the moonlight you can see the huge sand dunes, appearing as if out of a pastel painting.

with its many 4000-metre-tall mountain peaks.

In order to reach the dunes, you have to cross the shallow, but wide, Medano Creek. The hike up to one of the ridges takes a lot of effort, even though the sand is still hard after the cold night. The largest dune is 230 metres high, the tallest of any in the United States.

In the early morning light, deep shadows streak across the landscape.

After the hike, with the dunes providing a surreal backdrop, we travellers will enjoy a small open-air breakfast from the RV fridge.

The return drive to Denver provides no further spine-tingling situations. At Colorado Springs, Pikes Peak, elevation 4301 metres, towers over the landscape. Visitors can get to the top riding the world’s highest-elevation rack-andpinion railway.

This group of travellers, however, elects instead to enjoy the comfort of their RV for the final leg of the journey.

Pennetta lives the dream

By Darren Walton Tennis princess Flavia Pennetta feels like she lived out a reallife sporting fairytale at the US Open.

After upstaging fellow Italian Roberta Vinci in yesterday’s final to become the oldest first-time women’s grand slam champion in professional tennis history, Pennetta revealed her retirement plans before riding off into the sunset with the trophy and her fiance.

“It’s a dream come true,” Pennetta said after denying her lifelong friend, Fed Cup team-mate and former doubles partner 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 in the most unlikely of championship deciders.

“With this, winning today, my life is perfect.”

Pennetta, 33, and Vinci, 32, shared a bedroom in Rome for four years as teenagers and the newly crowned champion said playing her “sister” in the first all-Italian grand slam final only added to her career climax.

“It’s magical. You have one of your best friends with you,” said Pennetta, who revealed she’d decided three weeks ago to walk away from the game at the end of the year.

“It’s something amazing.

“I didn’t think to be here. She didn’t think neither to be here today.

“We know each other really well. We have so many things in our life happening together.

“It’s funny to be here today because we play the first match when we were nine years old in

“One more thing I have to say. This is the way I would like to say goodbye to tennis,” Pennetta said before confirming she’ll play out the year.

“It is what all the players want to do, going out with this big trophy (to take) home.”

In addition to becoming the third-oldest open-era grand slam champion behind all-time greats Martina Navratilova and Serena Williams, Pennetta set new standards for patience.

Contesting her 49th career major, no woman has waited longer to break through at a grand slam.

Gracious in defeat, Vinci hailed her semi-final win over the top-ranked and grand slamchasing Williams a “miracle” but said Pennetta was a deserving champion.

“I’m really happy and really happy for Flavia,” Vinci said.

“It’s tough to play against one player that you’ve known for a long time.

“It was a tough day, but I tried to do my best, but Flavia played unbelievable.”

Ogier retains rally title; Paddon fifth Frenchman Sebastien Ogier is in rare company after claiming a third consecutive World Rally Championship title by winning Rally Australia for a third straight year.

The 31-year-old Volkswagen star produced another near flawless performance to collect his seventh win of the season from 10 events and clinch the 2015 world crown with three rounds remaining.

Ogier took all four stages on Sunday to win the 17-stage Rally Australia by 12.3 seconds from Volkswagen team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala of Finland, with Northern Ireland’s Kris Meeke (Citroen) third.

He became just the fourth driver to win the world title three times, behind nine-times winner, countryman and former Citroen team-mate Sebastien Loeb and Finns Juha Kank-

kunen and Tommi Makinen, who both won four titles.

His 31st career victory extended his dominance of the world scene since Volkswagen joined the WRC in 2013.

The three VW drivers posted the top three times on each of yesterday’s first three stages, with Ogier quickest each time.

Hyundai’s New Zealandborn star Hayden Paddon was fifth, nearly 43 seconds back.

Latvala has two wins this year led Rally Australia after the first day but Ogier pegged him back and won all four stages on the closing day.

“So far it’s an amazing season.

It’s the best I’ve ever done,” said Ogier.

“This rally win is very significant. On paper it was impossible to win but I was determined. It’s the perfect way to secure the title.”

Fords quinella Sandown Mark Winterbottom has tightened his grip on the V8 Supercars championship taking a stunning Sandown 500 victory with co-driver Steve Owen. The Pepsi Max Crew car No.5 sat patiently behind Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell for more than 100 laps but pounced late in the race, undercutting his rivals thanks to a calculated pit-lane strategy.

Hammers four from four

Mid Canterbury’s unbeaten run extended to four matches on Saturday with a 36-26 win over West Coast at Rugby Park in Greymouth.

Two tries from wing-turnedcentre Seta Koroitamana and the accurate boot of first five Ewan Scott proved the difference as the Hammers continued their quest for an unprecedented three-peat.

The Coasters collected a bonus point by scoring four tries to Mid Canterbury’s three, but referee Liam Scanlon dished out a slew of early penalties to Grant Keenan’s side and Scott claimed 21 points in all.

Scanlon, frustrated by West Coast’s continual offending, sent loose forward Dylan Nel and halfback Nick Makea to the sin-bin to restrict the home team to 14 players for much of the first half.

Koroitamana sliced through West Coast’s defence at will, and wings Gideon Lambrechts and Ashton Tuck also proved too elusive for their opponents.

Imposing lock Maikeli Mudu dominated the lineouts and also featured in several strong midfield bursts, while flankers Scott Vessey and Jon Dampney were prominent throughout the contest.

Coast first five Nik Cumming scored two classy tries and kicked three conversions for a personal tally of 16 points, but the home side’s lack of discipline proved costly.

The game was just 20 seconds old when Scanlon first penalised West Coast, and within the first 14 minutes the penalty count was 6-0 in favour of Mid Canterbury, with Scott slotting three of them for a 9-0 lead.

midfield defence. He charged through after the Hammers chose to scrum on the Coast 22 from Scanlon’s seventh penalty, which saw Makea dispatched to the sin-bin to replace Nel, who had just been allowed back into the game.

The Coasters, guilty of aimless kicks and sloppy handling, never really threatened the defence until the 35 minute mark when busy centre Kevin Moore broke through before lock Francis Auwerda burst on to a short pass and ran 30m to the try line.

Cumming’s conversion closed the gap to an unlikely nine point deficit at 16-7, but Mid Canterbury soon restored order when Coast second five Andrew Connors turned the ball over in a tackle and Koroitamana again cut loose to race 55m to score under the posts.

The Coasters attacked early in the second spell, ignoring chances to close the gap to six with easy penalty kicks but then coming up short when the lineout drives were repelled or Mid Canterbury lock Mudu stole the ball.

Another Scott penalty pushed the visitors out to a 26-14 lead before Cumming, flirting with the offside line, intercepted the ball near halfway and sprinted to the goal line. His conversion went wide but Coast were back in the hunt until Scott knocked over another penalty to put Mid Canterbury up 29-19.

Mid Canterbury coach Grant Keenan said he was pleased with the amount of opportunities his side created, and praised Scotsman Ewan Scott for a fine display at first five in the absence of Murray Williams.

“We created a number of scoring opportunities, we didn’t take them all but it was good that we created them,” he said.

“It was a good effort, we’re happy with the four wins.”

The Hammers will host East Coast at the Ashburton Showgrounds in week five.

Nisbo set for Georgia tongue-twister

Cup as a broadcaster, he has a secret weapon up his sleeve.

“I know a local hairdresser who happens to be Russian,” Nisbett said.

That kind of research is all part of the role for Nisbett, who will again lead Sky’s commentary team. After covering the first three World Cups alongside Keith Quinn, Nisbett shifted to Sky and called the All Blacks’ victory four years ago.

He describes that moment as a career highlight, but the lows are just as vivid.

“The performance of the All

Blacks in ‘95 was pretty staggering up until the final, and then I had the dubious task of interviewing Sean Fitzpatrick.

That showed the ups and the downs, which is really what it’s all about.”

Alongside solving pronunciation problems, Nisbett has spent the last several weeks preparing notes on all the ABs’ opposition. Most of that preparation may never be heard on air but Nisbett knows it’s nice to have as an insurance policy - a lesson he learned from the best.

“I spoke to Bill McLaren, the

great Scottish commentator, and asked him about what sort of preparation he did, and he said he did a lot but he only had to use five per cent of it. Sometimes there might be a break or a severe injury where you really have to fill in a lot of time.”

He’d like to add to his five World Cups, but conceded that decision might be out of his hands. If this is his last tournament, though, Nisbett is quietly confident he can go out on a high and once again watch as Richie McCaw lifts the Webb Ellis Cup. - NZME

Auckland have reclaimed the Lin Colling Memorial Trophy and cemented third position on the ITM Cup Premiership table with a 35-29 win over Otago. But after three games in nine days, their weary legs showed in the second spell and the final whistle could not come soon enough. In the final analysis, the goalkicking of captain Simon Hickey - six from seven - was crucial, as was a strong opening, and they led 27-14 at the break. ABs ready to rumble The All Blacks haven’t played for the better part of a month and had only five tests before picking their squad - less football than nearly every other team at the tournament. Webster in camp Corey Webster’s NBA dream has taken a positive step forward after receiving an invitation to attend the New Orleans Pelicans’ training camp at the end of the month.

The Tall Blacks shooting guard has spent three days this week training in front of the NBA franchise’s coaching team as he seeks to crack the best basketball league in the world. And receiving a golden ticket to training camp can only be a sign that Webster has impressed enough in limited opportunity to be considered a chance of securing a roster spot for the upcoming season.

Shield bid falls short

Mid Canterbury’s aspirations of reclaiming the Hanan Shield they lost to North Otago in 2013 were dashed in the first tournament held at the EA Networks Centre stadium on Saturday.

Mid Canterbury locked horns with South Canterbury in the opening fixture of the day, and fell to a narrow 27-26 defeat.

South Canterbury led at the end of the first quarter 7-5 and maintained the two goal advantage for a 14-12 score at half time.

Ange Leadley’s Mid Canterbury side came out firing and battled hard for a 21-19 lead at the end of the third, but South Canterbury coach Cindy Robertson’s changes in the fourth quarter paid off to take a one goal victory.

In the day’s second match, South Canterbury secured the shield for the first time in more than half a decade with a 45-42 win over North Otago.

Mid Canterbury returned to the court for their afternoon showdown with North Otago and took a nail-biting 36-35 win.

Mid Canterbury were behind by three at the end of the opening quarter, but fought back to

be right in the game at 16-15 at half time.

Leadley’s side struggled to contain dangerous goal shoot Jennifer O’Connell in the third quarter as North Otago regained the lead, albeit a narrow one, at 25-24, but a spirited display in the final quarter in front a vocal home crowd saw Mid Canterbury through to a thrilling one-goal win at the death.

Ennis leads the way as Sharks eliminate Souths

By James macsmith A Michael Ennis-inspired Cronulla have thrashed South Sydney 28-12 in their NRL elimination final to move through to the second week of the playoffs.

Ennis had a hand in two of the Sharks tries at Allianz Stadium yesterday, as he brilliantly controlled the ruck in the fourtries-to-two win.

Cronulla will play North Queensland in Townsville on Saturday night in the second semi-final, while the Rabbitohs’ premiership defence is over.

However Cronulla could be without Ennis next week after he was put on report for a 68th minute high tackle on Chris McQueen and also be in trouble for a first half high shot on Souths half Adam Reynolds.

Souths’ loss was made even worse when five-eighth Luke Keary was put on report for an incident which left Sharks captain Paul Gallen clutching at his eye.

After the tackle Gallen could be heard saying “I can’t see” over the referee’s microphone.

But he did play on.

Replays appeared to show

Keary’s hand very close to Gallen’s eye.

Greg Inglis played less than three weeks after undergoing knee surgery and was a shadow of his usual self, as he was clearly hampered by the injury and regularly attended to by Rabbitohs’ medical staff during the game.

Ennis and skipper Paul Gallen led the way for the Sharks, who have moved into the second week of the finals after their wooden spoon finish last season.

Sharks pivot Jack Bird opened the scoring in the 21st minute

after he broke the line on a set play and ran 25m.

The Sharks added to that nine minutes later when Wade Graham pounced on a Jeff Robson kick that was fumbled

by Paul Carter. When Anthony Tupou crashed over from close range off an Ennis pass in the 36th minute the Sharks stretched their lead to 18-0, the halftime score.

Without George Burgess due to suspension, the Rabbitohs were dominated up front and the match was all but over when Ennis put Sam Tagataese over in the 61st minute. - AAP

Bennett hails defence Wayne Bennett says Brisbane’s defence is equal to the greatest in the six-time NRL premier’s history.

The master coach admitted he had to cast his mind back over the club’s glittering past to find a better defensive effort than in their 16-12 NRL qualifying final win over North Queensland at a sold-out Suncorp Stadium. The Bulldogs advanced to week two of the NRL finals with a thrilling 11-10 golden-point win over St George Illawarra at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night however lacked direction at times.

Reynolds admits they sometimes took the wrong option against the Dragons. Canterbury face an elimination semi-final on Friday night against the Sydney Roosters at Allianz Stadium.

Loss ‘a lesson’ Don’t try telling North Queensland’s Jake Granville there isn’t any difference between NRL regular season matches and finals football.

The Cowboys hooker, one of the club’s best performers this year, was given a torrid introduction to finals football against former club Brisbane on Saturday night.

Several times throughout a frenetic and tense contest a tackled Cowboys player would play the ball to no one with Granville struggling to keep up with the pace of the match. Despite the disappointment of defeat, the Cowboys are keeping positive ahead of a second-chance semifinal against Cronulla in Townsville next week. “It was a good lesson for us that you can’t switch off, even for a second, in finals footy,” said Ben Hannant.

Ashburton Boxing Club’s Cornelius Grobler and Mel McGlynn both took wins in their respective fights at the Canterbury Champs in Christchurch on Saturday.

Grobler, who was fighting in the 69kg open male elite category, out-boxed Waikuku’s

Richard Robinson to take out the prestigious Canterbury title.

Robinson was given a standing eight-count in the first round after being caught by Grobler’s powerful overhand right.

“The first round, I started real strong and real fast.

“I wanted to intimidate him a bit because he’s a boxer that likes to put a lot of pressure on,” he said.

“I was just jabbing him and getting some hooks and uppercuts and counterpunching him.”

McGlynn took on Gore’s Sa-

rah Martin in the 69kg novice grade, and extended her record to four wins from five bouts with a distinguished display after having an 18-month injury layoff.

The 31-year-old said she had to utilise her jab to keep Martin at bay and was pleased to return to the ring with a win following shoulder surgery.

“I couldn’t really throw the right, I had to just keep jabbing and use my right every now and then,” she said.

“Because I’ve been out for 18 months it’s the first time I’ve been back in the ring so I’m pretty happy with that.

“It’s definitely rewarding, and brought the confidence back.”
