Declan Leslie, 6, was one of a huge number of Mid Cantabrians who took the opportunity to enjoy the fun of the Extravaganza Fair at the Ashburton Domain on the weekend. An annual visitor to the area, the fair is always a huge hit with locals and this weekend’s stopover was no different. Featuring family friendly shows and music all day, there was also funky stalls, readers and caravans. Run by a passionate group of people who choose to live in their house buses or motorhomes, the show makes its way around the South Island and then the North Island, visiting 32 different towns while on tour with all money raised going back into their charitable trust to allow them to continue.

RAKAIA MURDER

Wife charged over murder The wife of slain Mid Canterbury farmworker Tony Waldron has appeared in court this week, charged with his murder.

Waldron, the 29-year-old father of two-young children, was found in his bed by a work colleague after he failed to turn up to work on September 18 last year and he went looking for him.

One month after his death, Joshua Dylan Morris-Bamber was charged with his murder, with his trial set to begin in the High Court in Christchurch ear-

ly next month.

On Monday, the story took another twist when Waldron’s wife, Alana Jane Bamber, 33, appeared in the Timaru District Court charged with the murder of her husband.

Bamber filed an application for bail, but Judge Maze, who presided over Monday’s hearing rejected the application, granting her leave to apply in the High Court, where she will next appear on October 30.

The connection between the pair charged with murder is yet

to be confirmed.

Waldron was living and working at a Gardiner’s Road, east of Rakaia, address at the time of his death. Emergency services were called to the property at 9am following the discovery by his co-worker.

Initial investigations by Police focused solely on the address where Waldron was killed, before they extended that to another property on the same road later in the week.

An arrest was made at that time, but Police later confirmed

that the charges faced from that arrest were not in direct relation to the homicide.

The Police investigation, which was led by Detective Senior Sergeant Richard Quested, saw officers and specialists search teams scouring effluent and irrigation ponds near to the Gardiners Road address and also spending considerable time completing searches in both the Rakaia and Selwyn River beds.

Morris-Bamber was charged in early October.

It’s time to extend fluoridation – dentists

The sooner fluoride is added to community water supplies throughout New Zealand the better, says Ashburton dentist Justin Wall.

The oral health sector leader said members of the next government needed to make sure they pushed through the Fluoridation Amendment Bill.

“We want to see them get over it and get on with it, and implement it, so we can put the whole business to rest and get on with our lives,” Wall said.

Fluoride would not only improve the oral health of children, but also adults, as it had a preventative effect on tooth decay for whomever was

consuming it.

The National Party bill was introduced in 2016, but it has sat languishing since.

Wall said while both National and Labour had been supportive of it, as the election approached they had now been busy blaming each other for the bill not having gone through Parliament.

The bill would result in District Health Boards having control over the introduction of fluoride to community water supplies, which would most likely see boards throughout the country introduce it to most of their town and city supplies.

Currently, district and city councils decide whether or not to fluoridate their supplies. This is a system which sees councils subject to pressure from the ratepayer base which may

include vocal minorities or majorities opposing fluoride.

This happened in Ashburton in 2002, when the Ashburton District council withdrew fluoride from Ashburton’s water supply in 2002 after a referendum.

A similar referendum vote in Methven in 2008 saw a majority remaining in favour of fluoridation.

Methven is one of few South Island areas which have fluoride added to their water, while others include Dunedin.

Crowds gather, walk in hope

Keeping it simple makes it easier for people to connect.

And that’s exactly how Hakatere HopeWalk Suicide Awareness committee member Juanita Richards felt about Saturday’s walk.

“The day just seemed to fall into place as we kept it nice and simple. I want to thank the community for their support, it wouldn’t happen otherwise,” she said.

Richards said Saturday’s walk coincided with World Mental Health Day, so the day’s theme was be kind and be gentle to each

other. The Chessboard was the perfect place to start the walk from as it allowed space for new faces to stand back and reflect or come and go as they wanted to, she said.

After leaving the Chessboard the group of over 30 yellow-clad walkers headed north on West Street, over the railway bridge, headed south on East Street and went back to the start after turning at Moore Street.

Making sure everybody was safe were He Waka Tapu staff at the front, and Maori Wardens were stationed at the crossing points.

were especially touched when the Timaru organisers arrived to support them.

“We also had a message from the Christchurch organisers apologising for not being able to make it.

“Through these walks I have made friends that I would never have met otherwise.”

Connie Quigley, as part of her role with Safer Ashburton, was on hand to offer support if needed.

She knows full well the crippling effect suicide can have, and how those left behind often do not know how to grieve or begin to move forward.

“Today is a gathering of mem-

ories, a place where people can come together to recollect special times shared with loved ones, alongside others who understand. That is a very powerful thing,” she said.

Richards said the organising committee all had their own stories, but it wasn’t about them, it was about working collaboratively to put it on in Ashburton for the second year.

The encouraging comments kept coming long after the last yellow balloon was taken down.

“There are plenty of positive comments on our Facebook page,” Richards said. “We are grateful to the community for

coming out to support such a worthy cause.”

Yellow is the official colour of the international HopeWalk Suicide Prevention Movement. Their official Facebook page explains why.

“Yellow is the brightest colour of the visible spectrum and it is the most noticeable of all [colours] by the human eye.

“It means happiness and optimism; it is the colour of sun shining for a new day, or bright light, creativity and hope for tomorrow.”

For those who missed Saturday’s event, the Christchurch HopeWalk is on November 1.

A garage sale with a difference

Many a good event idea comes from a casual conversation, and so it was for Sally-Ann Kircher and the Methven Community Garage Sale Trail, held for the first time on Saturday.

Kircher said she was chatting to some friends about holding a garage sale to get rid of stuff and before she knew it the idea had taken hold.

“It all snowballed from that general conversation, and before I knew it people were contacting me wanting to join in, we ended up with 26 garage sales and seven businesses with sales tables,” she said.

Having a garage sale trail was actually a stroke of genius on many levels, the community event vibe meant it took away any hesitation people may have had about going to individual garage sales, it wildly increased foot traffic, sellers didn’t have to travel anywhere and the interactive map, put together by Kircher, gave bargain hunters a list of what was for sale at each place.

Kircher’s social media talents were also put to good use.

Making the most of the garage sale and second-hand dealing pages she belongs to meant dealers and shoppers from Christchurch, Geraldine, Ashburton and Lyttelton, and locals were all inspired to come along.

“Because it was so spread out, it was impossible to tell exactly how many people there was, but we printed 180 maps and they were all picked up, plus some would have been using the virtual map.”

Kircher said the feedback was really positive and there is talk of making it an annual or even six-monthly thing.

“It was a really cool, happy weekend, and I want to thank the community for getting behind the event and making it such a success.”

Diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease two years ago has meant that she has had to take a step back from many things.

“This was something positive I knew I could do. You don’t organise these things for the attention, but it felt good to be able to help, I love this community.”

About 380 more Mid Canterbury pupils will be able to access free lunches in schools next year as a government programme rolls out to the district.

Both Netherby School and Hampstead School have been nominated to be included in the extension of the nationwide Ka Ora, Ka Ako healthy school lunches programme.

Netherby already has freshly prepared lunches brought to the school for pupils each day.

It is a charity that provides the service, called Kai for Kids and founded by Ashburton mum Jo Taylor.

It is funded by Advance Ashburton and the agricultural community.

When the government programme is rolled out, which will be from April next year, Kai for Kids and other organisations, whether they be businesses or otherwise, will be

Taylor said she planned to tender for the contract, and as a charity, Kai for Kids would be keen to make every dollar of government funding go as far

as possible.

“We are looking for government funding, and tendering for these two schools is part of that process, and we are very keen to be the chosen provider,” Taylor said.

There are more than 150 pupils at Netherby, and the ma-

jority of them have opted in to Kai for Kids, which started this year.

Principal Phil Wheeler said the programme worked well at the school, and he welcomed the government bringing Ka Ora, Ka Ako to the district.

Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said he was looking forward to the programme at the school. Children at the school, which has a role of about 380, brought a variety of lunches.

However, in general there had been a move away from sandwiches to more convenience foods. The school had long banned fizzy drinks and did not sell fried and fatty food.

“We already promote healthy eating within the school, so it fits with the historic perspective of what we have been about,” Melrose said.

“It’s the way we (New Zealand) are heading, similar to the UK and America, where lunches are just part of what a school provides,” Melrose said.

Shaping clay into feather-like forms has been a labour of love for Ashburton ceramicist Mike Farrell.

He made more than 500 feathers from clay for his sculpture Korowai which won the supreme award at the Hakatere Ceramics and Pottery annual exhibition awards evening last week.

Farrell pots on nights and weekends, fitting it in around his job as a building official at the Ashburton District Council.

“I felt quite humbled by it,” Farrell said of receiving the award.

He came up with the idea for the creation of a Maori traditional cloak as he aimed to express his affinity and pride for his heritage.

Farrell’s great great great grandfather, who had the surname Taiaroa, was one of the signatories to the Treaty of Waitangi in Dunedin.

“Even though I have only a small proportion of Maori blood, I am as proud of it as many of my friends are of their Irish, Scottish, English or other ethnicity,” he said.

The colours of Korowai are symbolic – the feathers at the bottom reflect ancestral roots, coloured black and brown. Many Maori descendants have become lighter in colour, and this is reflected by the feathers becoming lighter towards the top of the

cloak. “This depicts my family,” Farrell said.

Crafting the individual feathers required wedging the porcelain-mix clay, then rolling it out to a thin and whispery width, crafting the feather shapes and drawing a feather pattern on to each.

Each feather was put in a kiln for bisque, then covered with a velvet underglaze before the surface glaze. The underglaze was to ensure just the right shininess as Farrell strived for a gloss to semi-gloss finish.

Some of the feathers broke, however, the majority survived the process and construction, which took just over 200 hours.

He was pleased with the finished work now on display in the exhibition, where many visitors have commented on just how realistic the feathers are. Nevertheless, Farrell was stunned to have won the supreme award considering the high quality of work exhibited alongside Korowai.

Korowai was among pieces at the exhibition which sold quickly, fetching the asking price of $1800 from a lover of Maori art who intends to display it in their home.

Farrell said it was fantastic to see the club thriving, with many new members having come on board this year.

The club was growing so much that it was rapidly outgrowing its Manse Street premises, and was on the look-out for a new location.

It holds the exhibition annually, with all work on display having been created in the last year.

New record in earnings

Business was booming at this year’s Bookarama to the tune of a new record in earnings.

The Rotary Club of Ashburton annual book sale fundraiser raised over $67,000 this year, event convener David Mead said, $17,000 more than in 2019.

“We are very pleased as you can imagine,” Mead said.

In the lead-up to the 41st Bookarama the writing was on the wall as the Rotarians were inundated with books

– which Mead put down to people having Covid-19 lockdown clean-outs.

It had the Rotary club hopeful of a bumper week at the Sports Hall, and those hopes rang true as the books and other items flew out the door.

Mead said they had no idea on the exact number of sales, but knew it was a huge number.

“Over two-thirds of what we put out sold.

“There weren’t as many to put away this year, which was good.”

With a big number of books on offer, Mead estimated opening day to be the biggest day they had had in a number of years, and the momentum carried

on for much of the week, including a final surge of sales on the Saturday.

“It was pretty steady all the way through really.

“Thursday was the quietest day which was a surprise as usually the second day is the quietest day.”

Having the event coincide with the school holidays will have also helped achieve the record tally, he said.

Mead said the $67,000 will go back into the community through Rotary’s community grants.

The unsold books will go into storage to go back on sale next year, with collection to officially begin around July.

Hamish David Malyon King stunned the Ashburton District Court yesterday with philosophical arguments he did not need to follow its rules or processes.

The 41-year-old fisherman first of all refused to stand in the dock, and stated to community magistrate Simon Heale he was not there to defend himself on the offence for which he had been charged, but was there instead to file paperwork by special appearance and wanted to clear up a case of mistaken identity.

At the start of his appearance, court security had to point out the defendant when he remained seated in the gallery and did not make his way to the dock when his name was called. He agreed to stand in the gallery, but only on the condition he did not waive his common law rights in doing so.

He was charged with driving while disqualified, and did not wish to enter a plea, mentioning that animals plea and that he was a living being.

“I understand your position,” said a very patient magistrate.

“My position is that I’m bound by the decisions of the High Court and the Court of Appeal, those courts have already decided that all of us are captured by the jurisdiction of this court, they direct me in this situation to request from you a plea and if you refuse to enter a plea, it will be deemed you have entered a plea of not guilty.”

At the request of police prosecuting officer Sergeant Chris McFarlin, the magistrate amended the charge to be the third or subsequent.

King asked the magistrate what gave him the right to speak for him, and in court discussions among police, the magistrate and the defendant, he said he wanted to speak to the common law sheriff.

“If you can find them you can,” the magistrate said.

“Where are they?” King asked, remaining standing in the courtroom gallery holding a thick wad of paperwork. He reminded the magistrate that His Worship was acting out of oath to enter a plea which was a fact of legal fiction. “I am innocent.”

The magistrate recorded a deemed not guilty plea and remanded King on bail to November 2 for a case review hearing.

Abridged show on track

The Ashburton A&P Show will not be going ahead this year, but several individual show sections will do their thing at the end of the month.

Some of the big competitive classes – including the two-day showjumping event, dog trials and highland dancing – are still gearing up to go ahead in a heavily abbreviated version of the show.

general committee made the difficult decision to cancel the show in September due to the uncertainty around the Covid-19 levels at the time.

However, administrator Lucille Brown said that people had been asking if their sections could still go ahead and the committee was keen to proceed with a small number of events.

The showjumping is now going to be run over Saturday and Sunday and is expected to have a bumper field across the classes, with entries closing on October

31.

The Tux dog trials, part of the national circuit, will have a full field at the Ashburton showgrounds on Friday and Saturday, October 30-31, from 7.30am each day “There are lots more than last year and they are coming from the top of the South Island to the bottom of the South Island.”

The highland dancing will go ahead in the Netherby Hall on the Saturday and will feature over 30 competitors.

“I’m also very busy undoing what I had done.”

There had been some people being negative about the decision to cancel, she said, but most were understanding.

“We are only one of 10 A&P shows that cancelled,” Brown said.

The fact they are still running some sections is more than other cancelled shows have managed.

OUR VIEW

A district just brimming with talent

I

know I’ve said it before, but this district is just absolutely brimming with incredibly talented people, across a whole variety of different fields.

I was lucky enough to be one of the full house sitting in the Ashburton Trust Event Centre on Friday night for the opening night of RocknPop Solid Gold, and I couldn’t help but admire the people walking out onto the stage and performing in front of me.

Their efforts, both vocally and visually, were as good as you’ll see anywhere in this country as far as I’m concerned, and to think that it’s all home-grown, fostered and encouraged talent just makes it all the better.

We might not be that great at actually acknowledging how good we are sometimes, but we certainly need to start patting ourselves on the back a little bit more for what we are producing.

Pick any field in life and you are almost guaranteed to find a Mid Cantabrian excelling at it.

Be it on the musical stage, a sporting field or even academic and in business.

Of course, none of that would be without the hard work and dedication of the people who play such a critical role in the early development of these homegrown stars.

Parents, naturally, but also tutors, coaches, advisors and trainers – most of whom still reside here most likely and get to watch from afar as people who they have helped mould go on to bigger and better things.

And it’s time we started paying a bit more attention to those people. They need to be celebrated as much as those who prove to go on and be successful.

I could think of probably two dozen names off the top of my head, all locals who have played a critical role in developing a high achiever in life.

They might be happy with hiding back in the shadows, but that doesn’t make their story any less worthy of being told, nor should it stop recognition coming their way.

If you know someone who fits that bill, let us know. We’d love to tell their story if they’re willing.

Let’s start celebrating the successes of our own patch, because there’s plenty to celebrate.

Twelve years in the House A

s this is my last column for the Ashburton Guardian as the Member of Parliament for Selwyn, I would like to firstly acknowledge the communities of our region and thank you all for the support you have shown me during the past 12 years.

It has been my privilege to work with you to get things done in our region and to represent your views in Parliament.

I have enjoyed witnessing the continuing growth and economic and social success of this electorate despite the challenges we have faced and have been a strong advocate for the region securing the necessary infrastructure to match this growth. When I was first elected as MP in 2008, Rolleston had just one school, and there are now five primary schools and one high school in Rolleston alone.

Halswell and Lincoln also have new primary schools and many other schools around our region have benefited from new classrooms and other facilities.

During my time in Parliament I have been fortunate to have held a variety of ministerial portfolios which have given me the opportunity to change the system and make a difference to the lives of New Zealanders.

As Justice Minister I am most proud of the work I started with my colleague Hon Anne Tolley around tackling our country’s shameful rates of family violence.

ery model for family violence to get agencies to work together.

The integrated safety response pilots we set up in Christchurch and the Waikato are already making a difference and those working in the sector have told me that they believe many lives have been saved as a result of this new way of working.

I have believed strongly in the importance of long-term thinking and planning when it comes to the infrastructure needs of New Zealand. And as Communications Minister, I was fortunate to play a central role in providing better internet and mobile connectivity for our communities through our transformative Ultra-fast Broadband, Rural Broadband Initiative and mobile blackspot programmes.

The value of these programmes has been well illustrated during the Covid-19 lockdowns when many people were able to continue to work and study from home.

Meanwhile, substantial pieces of work I was involved in as Environment Minister included putting in place comprehensive environmental protections for our exclusive economic zone; delivering New Zealand’s first ever national standards for fresh

Although the Parliamentary Library tells me that I was responsible for the introduction or carriage of 74 pieces of legisla-

tion, there are still more things I would have liked to achieve, as is the case for many retiring MPs I am sure.

In the end the only measure that counts is the difference that our actions make for people and

it is pleasing to know that as the local MP I have managed to help many people tackle difficult issues and have their voices heard.

Crucial facilities now open for our community A

t any one time, there are often several major projects under way in our district working to deliver new and improved services or infrastructure for residents.

Last week, two such projects were completed – the Ashburton cemetery extension and the Rakaia Salmon Site public toilets, and I had the privilege of opening these new facilities.

The cemetery extension has been a big and necessary project on the council books for several years, beginning all the way back to 2012 when concept plans were developed. Construction got under way in February last year and I am pleased to report that the facility is now open and ready for use.

Aside from providing for our town’s burial and remembrance needs for the next 30 to 40 years, this new $1.5 million extension reflects modern burial options and our district’s increasing diversity.

It features 1300 conventional burial plots and almost 700 conventional ashes plots. It also includes a Muslim burial area, natural burial area and an ashes scattering garden.

original cemetery, the 5.6 hectare extension provides easy and sensible access back into the original area so that you don’t need to travel to different parts of town to visit friends and family who have passed on.

Ashburton Contracting Ltd (ACL) and their subcontractor Murray and Tawny Wagstaff have done a wonderful job of the new cemetery and I’m sure you’ll agree that the grand hand-made stone entrance is very impressive.

Up in Rakaia, new public toilets are now open. The Salmon Site, especially prior to Covid-19 was a real hot spot for bus-loads of travellers stopping to use the facilities, and unfortunately the previous toilets couldn’t keep up with demand.

Thanks to a generous $20,000 donation from the Rakaia Lions, $198,000 from the council and a $740,000 grant from the Government’s Tourism Infrastructure Fund, the Salmon Site is under-

A great deal of care has gone into ensuring its style fits in with the buildings already on site.

Several new paths and plantings

have also been installed, and more of these are yet to come along with new playground equipment, signage, lighting and solar powered rubbish bins.

It’s great to see such a key stopoff for visitors and locals receive some much-needed upgrades

and I’m sure they will be enjoyed for many years to come.

‘We will turn this juggernaut around’

About 400 people attended a Federated Farmers’ meeting in Ashburton outlining the impacts of the Government’s freshwater reforms.

While many farmers are feeling overwhelmed by the likely impacts of the government’s freshwater reforms on their business, Federated Farmers president Andrew Hoggard says he is optimistic “that we will turn this juggernaut around”.

Speaking at a Federated Farmers’ meeting on the reforms in Ashburton, Hoggard said the regulations were not even operative when Minister of Agriculture Damien O’Connor had to change them.

“I do not ever recall a piece of legislation or regulation where this has happened.”

Rules to exclude stock from waterways were quite different to the original intent indicated in Cabinet minutes, which made them challengeable in court.

O’Connor had already signalled that post-election he would be making changes.

“Government rushed it in so they could have a piece of legislation in place before the election and have come up with a dog. Whoever is elected will have to spend time to make the regulations workable and practical.”

The impacts were the most obvious for Canterbury, Otago and Southland farmers, hit by stringent intensive winter graz-

ing requirements and a 190kg a hectare synthetic nitrogen cap. There were also huge implications for agricultural support businesses.

“Can we really support this, particularly in a Covid-19 world,” Hoggard said.

The general public were under the misconception that there were no rules for farmers. “They don’t understand what we have been going through for the last 10 years in terms of rules and requirements for regional councils and processors.”

The federation was considering doing a cost-benefit analysis of the regulations in conjunction with other parties.

The farmer lobby group was also highlighting the case for a review of land deemed ‘low slope’ for the purposes of stock exclusion from waterways.

Federation principal advisor David Cooper said extensive areas of hill and high country pastoral land was impacted because of the inaccuracy of maps and the regulations.

While government analysis of low slope maps showed the regulation would cost $1.1 billion, the federation estimated that the extra land captured would lift this to an estimated $4.4b.

“So the regulations don’t match what was intented by Cabinet, or was costed.”

The Ministry for the Environment was committed to changing the maps in about six months, Cooper said.

The federation was also calling for winter grazing to be managed under farm environmental plans, rather than resource consents.

by Beef + Lamb NZ. The survey by UMR Research found less than half (46 per cent) of farmers were confident in the future of New Zealand’s sheep and beef industry compared with 58 per cent in May. The southern South Island experienced the largest fall in confidence at 32 per cent (down 27 per cent) followed by the central South Island at 42 per cent (down 19 per cent) and eastern North Island at 50 per cent (down 16 per cent).

B+LNZ chairman Andrew Morrison said that sheep and beef farmers were increasingly concerned at the speed and scale of government-led reforms.

“We are hearing that a key factor behind the fall in confidence is the government’s recent essential freshwater rules, but also concerns about the cumulative impact of law changes in the last couple of years such as the Zero Carbon Bill and changes to the Emissions Trading Scheme that has led to a surge in the conversion of sheep and beef farms into carbon farms.

“Farmers are concerned the policy settings in areas such as freshwater and proposals on biodiversity are not workable or practical at a farm level, nor will they necessarily lead to better environmental outcomes,” Morrison said.

Chasing the best outcomes

A project aimed at adopting more variable minimum flows in drains on both sides of the Hinds River aims to achieve the best outcomes for both farming and aquatic life.

While the project was focused on Boundary Drain, just south of the Hinds River, it could be extended to other drains if successful, Hinds Drains Working Party chairman Craig Fleming said.

Drains in the area lost a lot of their flow, particularly in the irrigation season, after farmers on the community irrigation schemes higher up the plains switched from borderdyke (flood) to more efficient spray irrigation.

Set up in 2014, the working party surveyed the minimum flows of all the drains from the Rangitata River to the Ashburton River. This showed that between 2015 and 2017, the drains were on irrigation restrictions about 50 per cent of the time between November and January.

Minimum flows of 150 litres a second were set in the early 1990s, a figure agreed to after farmers sat around the table with Fish and Game and Environment Canterbury representatives, Fleming said.

“We were all happy at the time as we had big flows in the drains coming off the borderdyke area, but this has now changed.”

The Boundary Drain was three years into a five-year project operating at a variable minimum flow which altered from

100 litres a second up to 300 litres a second for six months of the year. This was aimed at achieving the best outcomes for both irrigating farmers and the fish and invertebrates living in the drain.

One of the conditions of the consent was that a 25mm rainfall anytime in the irrigation season would lead to a co-ordinated shutdown of pumping to enable a fresh of water to flow through the drain to encourage fish to move upstream.

As part of the variable flow trial, monitoring of aquatic life is carried out by Fish and Game and ECan representatives.

Fish diversity, fish abundance and aquatic habitat surveys are undertaken at least annually by Fish and Game. These surveys include electric fishing, ecological health assessments and trout spawning surveys.

Invertebrate and algae monitoring by ECan is carried out for Boundary Drain at Trigpole Road and Lower Beach Road.

Monthly water quality testing for factors such as nitrates is also done.

It was hoped that increased flow variability, including fresh protection, would maintain or enhance fish migration and recruitment, fish spawning and fish habitat as well as having farm economic and cultural benefits.

As the drains are largely uniform, rock weirs have been created in the Windermere and Deals drains in a project funded

by Advance Ashburton to generate pools and ripples and develop a more diverse habitat.

Boundary Drain, which flows out to sea at Wairuna Lagoon, historically marked the boundary between Longbeach and Coldstream Estates. Drains totalling hundreds of kilometres in length were created to drain what was originally swamp, either flowing into the Hinds River, or directly to the sea.

Since the trial had started there had been three wet seasons so minimum flow conditions hadn’t been tested, but this

year was looking drier, Fleming said.

“If the trial is successful then other drains in the catchment can look at implementing a similar management programme.

“It’s our responsibility to make this work,” said Fleming, an arable and dairy farmer. Originally the Fleming family farm had relied on shallow wells and drains for irrigation, but had now mainly switched to pumping from deep wells. They had also given up consents for the Hinds River as it was too unreliable.

Some new teams are set to be unleashed as senior mixed softball swings into gear this weekend.

The draw was revealed earlier this week for Mid Canterbury Softball Association’s (MCSA) senior mixed competition.

A total of six teams will compete for the senior competition, which will run over five months, with the Hampstead Heat returning to defend their title.

Two Fairfield sides, the Ragamuffins and the Ratbags, will also line up in the competition.

A flurry of Hampstead players have also

set up a separate club team, the Panthers.

There remains a second Hampstead team known as the Phoenix.

The Demons club has been whittled down to one team after having two teams last season, including beaten finalists the Rebels.

Softball finals is scheduled to be held on March 27.

Two club derbies kickstart the senior mixed competition on Saturday with the Fairfield Ragamuffins taking on the Ratbags and the Hampstead Phoenix playing the Hampstead Heat, and the Panthers up against the Demons.

Other grades also get under way this weekend including under-16 and under-13 softball and under-9 and under-7 T-Ball.

One thing which was striking from Sunday’s draw in Wellington – and credit must go to Australia’s smothering defence – is how little punch we had in the backline compared to the Wallabies.

In somewhat of a reversal from the traditional make-up of both teams, it was the Wallabies who boasted the big ball runners, and they were utilised effectively.

Filipo Daugunu was a handful down the right hand flank, breaking tackles regularly.

Compared to when the All Blacks were in possession, we looked stagnant and unthreatening, until debutant Caleb Clake was unleashed late.

Mo’unga, McKenzie, Bridge – great players, not big guys.

Which raises the question, is the balance right out wide, and do we need more of a physical presence to combat Australia’s rush defence.

Many are calling for Clarke to start on his home track this weekend following a strong cameo off the bench, is he the punch needed to get us go forward?

Although, the impetus surely must go on a more authoritative performance up front to provide a better foundation for Smith and Mo’unga.

Sam Cane The constantly undervalued Sam Cane silenced some of his doubters on Sunday with a grinding, dogged display in the loose.

The defensive merchant led from the front, topping the tackle count by some distance with 25 and none missed, and securing crucial turnovers at the breakdown.

Cutting a battered figure at the postmatch presser painted a picture of his workrate on Sunday.

I am a longtime Cane defender yes, mainly due to the fact that the most common criticisms appear to be the fact that he is not Richie McCaw and has had a rotten run with injuries.

It was not helped by the fact the Chiefs endured a luckless stretch during Super Rugby Aotearoa.

His captaincy will continue to come under the microscope over the next few weeks, which comes with the territory.

However a gentle reminder that the captaincy of McCaw and Sean Fitzpatrick were also brought into question during the early stages of their tenures.

The All Stars came out to play at Methven on Sunday, and ended up shining brighter than anyone else in the Methven Cup. In what was total dominance, continuing a golden run in the grass track feature – New Zealand’s most feared stable made it eight wins in the last 11 years when Spankem came from nowhere to run down favourite Self Assured in the shadows of the post.

In a performance which belied the nature of the racing throughout the day, where very few horses came from off the speed to win, it was a remarkable feat by the million-dollar earner, especially considering he spotted Self Assured, the New Zealand Trotting Cup favourite, at least seven lengths when they turned for home.

And for two of his owners, Phil and Glenys Kennard – it came as a complete shock.

“We didn’t win that, did we?”

Phil said when congratulated.

Sunday proved a tough day for horses and punters alike with some good dividends throughout the day – the biggest of which was a $69 price for Zsa Zoe, who also came from well back to win a very strong fillies and mares’ trotting event.

Locals weren’t completely out of the action either.

Brent White tasted further success when Cranbourne was brave in victory in the junior drivers’ event.

After working onto the speed mid-race, he dug deep to hold off late challenges and win impressively.

Sarah O’Reilly chalked up another Methven win too, when she produced a confident drive on the Robert Davis-trained Buckskin to win during the middle of the 12-race programme.

Locally trained runners, President Pat and Navara, both produced solid finishes to run third in their respective races.

Southern rivals too good South Canterbury dominated three Mid Canterbury bowling greens on the weekend as they made a clean sweep of the first representative fixture of the season.

The triangular, one of the much anticipated clashes of the season between Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury and Canterbury Country sides was all one-way traffic as our southern neighbours won all four fixtures in the senior men and senior women as well as both the development men’s and women’s events.

Up against strong line ups, the Mid Canterbury sides all performed with great distinction but were unable to see off their challengers.

The two men’s sides both played at Allenton while the ladies matches were split between the Ashburton MSA Bowling Green on Racecourse Road and the Ashburton Bowling Club green in the Ashburton Domain.

It’s back to the drawing board for the two senior Mid Canterbury cricket sides, after both fell to opening round defeats at the weekend.

Technical, who made their debut appearance in South Canterbury’s senior 50-over competition, went down to Celtic by 29 runs, after being in pole position at the innings break.

Allenton’s second innings chase was even more calamitous in the Canterbury Combined competition, as they copped a 12-run loss in a match which registered a paltry 130 runs from both sides.

Looking to make their mark down the line, it all started promisingly for the visitors at Celtic, after they won the toss and inserted the defending champs.

Richard Print knocked over Celtic’s top order to have the hosts in a precarious position.

However their middle order scrapped their way out of dire straits and to a position of respectability, with Dan Laming hitting 47 coming in at number 5 and Toby Scannell chipping in with 25.

Tech mopped things up elsewhere, as Celtic were restricted to 148 all out after 43 overs, with Print the pick of the Stags bowlers with 4-36 from his 10 overs.

In reply, the Stags lost wickets at regular intervals despite opener Jason Morrison’s rearguard at one end.

Morrison top scored with 38, however Celtic proved too good with the ball as the visitors were cleaned up for 119 in the 33rd over.

It was wickets galore at Cheviot where Allenton travelled north.

After winning the toss, Allenton skittled the hosts for 71 inside 31 overs with the opening three at the bowling crease all notching three wickets apiece, none better than Mana Singh’s 3-8 from 7 overs, going for little over a run an over.

Cheviot number eight batsman Chris Nicholson (17) was the only one to make double figures with a total of 27 extras also conceded off Allenton’s bowling.

The visitors however were just as ineffectual with the bat out in the middle with Cheviot’s bowling lineup proving too hot to handle.

The first seven Allenton batsmen only managed to muster 28 runs, as all of Cheviot’s bowlers contributed.

A late cameo of 20 from Mana gave Allenton a sniff late in the day, but they were eventually dismissed for 59 in the 25th over to complete an eventful low-scoring wicket frenzy.

Dunlop sews up the silverware

A net round of 67 was enough for Stewart Dunlop to clinch the silverware following the second round of the DCL Cup at the weekend.

The Ashburton Golf Club member produced another polished round of golf to hold off Al Jopson in the overall picture, despite the latter keeping proceedings interesting with the top score of the stroke round.

Jopson’s 65 was a marked improvement on his round from the previous week, as he began applying the pressure on the back nine with three pars and a 13th hole birdie.

Dunlop’s 67 followed his 68 seven days earlier where he was edged on countback by Grant Hastie.

Four strokes back were Gavin Douglas, Sebastian McMillan, Tufuga Sa and Frits Senekal.

Nearest to the pin efforts went to Charlie Alexander, Chris Lovelock, Brian Nuttall and Paul May with Steve Vivian draining the longest putt on the 9th.

Terry McMillan clinched the nine hole event with a 22 point haul, with Elaine King and Laurence Hanrahan a point back.

A festival of tennis is how one may describe the Love Tennis event which returned to Ashburton at the weekend. Dozens passed through on Saturday and Sunday for the showcase run through Tennis NZ. Players of all ages took part in drills, coaching sessions or slide off to have a social hit around. A ball machine gave youngsters to simulate real life training regimes with all equipment supplied free of charge. A free barbecue for patrons was also a popular attraction during the well-supported event. More than 20,000 people were expected to attend open days throughout the country.

The events took place on the shingle Coastal Track which offered beautiful scenery.

On Thursday 8th October, we enjoyed a game of golf on a cold morning at Methven.

No winners to report as it wasn’t a competition day.

On Saturday, the winner of the Harvey Bakehouse Stableford was Terry McMillan (22 points). Runner-up was Elaine King (21 points), followed by Laurence Hanrahan (21) and Chris Anderson, Hughie Murchie and Bruce Sim (20).

Several players scored 19 points, with Antony White being the top 19-point scorer on countback.

by Judie Ryk’s team (recorded initially as Diana King’s team) with Shirley Taylor, Ollie Collins, Shirley Maw! Well done to Judie and her team, they won all of their 3 matches, on that bitterly cold Tuesday!

Ashburton Ladies Championship Triples continued on Tuesday and Thursday and will continue this week.

The men have begun their Championship matches also. Friday Triples on the 9th was at MSA and Reg McGarry as part of a composite team came 1st; Ashburton’s J Smart, J Ryk, A McKenzie came 2nd and Ashburton’s M Anderson, G Crack, J Kewish were 3rd.

Our Combined Rollover Triples on Saturday 10th was won by D Murcott, A Gibbs, M Knudson, W Herriott – 1 win, 1 draw, 10 ends; 2nd with 1 win, 1 draw, 9 ends was R Keeling, O Grey, A Gibson, G Taylor.

Ashburton’s Heather Goodall and Wendy Herriott have been picked to play for Mid Canterbury Reps on October 11.

Ashburton Ladies are taking part in the Hefford Shield on Monday, 12th October at Allenton. Three teams have been entered skipped by W Suttie, D King and J Ryk, who will play Rakaia, Allenton and Methven respectively. (Results will be included in this report if possible.)

Champion of Champions Singles and Presentation of Trophies is on 17th October at MSA and the singles involve Ashburton’s Wendy Suttie and John Kewish in the Senior category and Laraine Mills and Brentton Donaldson in the Junior category.

Presentations will be made after these matches have been completed.

Ashburton Dahlia Circle

The Dahlia Circle have welcomed two new members to the group.

We do trust that both Alan and Maryann enjoy and share the fellowship and the dahlia blooms.

The last meeting was held on September 15th with a mini daffodil show. There were 77 entries combined in the daffodil and cut flowers. Brian took 1st and 3rd prize and Jackie Ryan 2nd place for the top entries of daffodils.

Congratulations.

Looking forward, we have a busy program Tuesday 20th October with a look and learn and a lucky dip. All attending will be rewarded with a new dahlia, which have been donated.

Visitors and new members most welcome to join us. This will be at 7.30pm in the supper room of the Tinwald Hall.

The annual TUBER Sales will be held on Saturday October 24 (Labour Weekend) at the Farmers Market on West St. A good time for planting, as the frost hopefully will be over. Stand up Stewart Dunlop, he followed last week’s impressive net 68 with an even better 67 on Saturday to pick up this year’s DCL cup by a runaway 5 points.

New member Al Jopson did his best to reel him in with the days best score of net 65.

Other top scores came from Gav Douglas, Tuffy Sa, Seb McMillan and Frits Senekal. Well done to all players.

There have been some big movers on the RMF Cup leaderboard.

Old Lefty will be getting a nosebleed from sitting on the top with 41 points, one clear of Chris Lovelock and two clear of Steve Mc and Hoppy.

We only have one more qualifying round to go before the top 30 cut is made, which is the pairs best ball on the 31st.

The top 30 will then be re allocated points, top player getting 30 points and 30th place getting 1 point. The first finals game is the Barnett and Bermaline Cups on the 7th November.

Points will be only awarded to those top 30 players, with 15 points to the best score of the group down to 1 point for the 15th and none for the rest.

CLUB NEWS 27 A moments silence was taken in memory of member’s loved ones who have recently died.

The vacant position of Secretary was formally filled with Brenda Whittaker accepting this role that was left vacant at the AGM. The Minutes were read and confirmed and Correspondence read.

Audrey Bruce presented the Financial Statement.

Two major Branch fundraisers had to be cancelled during the year due to Covid-19. Pat gave a report of a meeting of Mid Canterbury Branch Presidents,held at Rakaia recently and the Farewell function to Graham Wrigley which she attended in Christchurch.

Graham was a former NZRC Regional Director and then NZRC National Training Manager. Members were given information of Volunteer gatherings in November and December.

Meeting closed and the Raffle was drawn and Sales Table did a brisk trade.

Afternoon tea concluded the meeting.

Blair Franklin was in action at the Ashburton Golf Club over the weekend.

We will then do a top 20 cut for the grand final which is the Santa Maria Cup on the 21st November. Hope it all makes sense, best way is to turn up and score well and it will all take care of itself.

This weekend we have the Ladies South Island Inter Provincials on at the Brandon, so we have no organised golf.

A group of us led by Captain Terry are heading away for a mystery bus trip to join in another club’s game day.

If you are not on the trip, please pop down to the course and cheer on our local ladies and watch some great golf.

Dave Strong welcomed 19 members to the September meeting, and that the outdoor furniture the club built would be raffled later in the year.

Show and Tell: John Millichamp: 3 large NZ beech burr bowls.

Geoff Brown: 2 large beech platter. Clarrie Brake: beautiful carved kauri bowl, a lime wood carved paua shell, a lidded box with ornamental knob.

Chris Thompson our secretary, gave a talk on creating a jewellery box, with 3 examples on show.

As a meticulous craftsman accuracy is essential so with the use of special made jigs, for this one off box, Chris can cut these sections of wood to precision, even at times includes an odd finger nail,

ending up with a beautiful container.

Thanks Chris for such a detailed instructive evening.

Lynnford Rural Women

Lori Rusbatch, who was awarded a Life time member of the Mania-o-roto Scouting Zone in December 2019, told the meeting there are 15,00 Scouts in New Zealand down in numbers from the past due to the fact of more pursuits offered to the young of today.

Scouting in New Zealand was started in Kaiapoi in 1908 by Major David Cosgrove, initially for boys from 12 years and up.

Ashburton Scouts started the following year.

A friend of Cosgrove, S. G. MacFarlane who was a school teacher in the town, was the first Ashburton Scout Master.

The Scouts now offer groups from 5 years and up. In 1910 a Troop of Ashburton Scouts walked from Ashburton to Christchurch and back, a distance of 53 miles each way, taking three days and stopping at Bankside, Burnham and Rolleston.

Fifty years later the walk was repeated with two of the original walkers seeing them off in Ashburton.

In 1965, R G Woodham and Associates presented the Chalmers Avenue property now known as Mania-o-Roto Park to Scouts and Guides.

In the 1980’s scouting was opened up for girls to join and now they make up about 20 per cent of the movement.

Maia-o-roto park is available for hire to the general public and is used during the week for educational purposes.

Lori showed her blanket and vest which

were adorned by the numerous badges she has acquired over 30 years of service to scouting, which began for her in Australia, before coming to Ashburton in 1987.

She displayed her many scarves from different sections of the movement and the wooden beads she has earned over time.

It was obvious by her demeanour that she had thoroughly enjoyed her time with the family of scouting.

In January 2021, there will be a weeklong camp in Mt. Somers for the District Scouts.

Sickness and School holidays, depleted the numbers at the October meeting.

Branch members met in the Tinwald Hall on Tuesday October 6.

President Pat O’Brien welcomed members and introduced Kathy Harrington-Watt, Refugee Settlement Team Leader Safer Mid Canterbury.

Kathy spoke of her role in the settlement of Refugee families when they come to Ashburton. She gave an insightful and interesting talk of all that is involved.

19 Club members travelled to Greymouth to take part in the Greymouth 2 and 4-person relay on Saturday October 10 2020, hosted by the local harrier club.

This is a 4-lap relay with competitors in the 2-person race doing alternate laps, and those in the 4-person race doing a lap each.

There is also the option for runners to do the whole distance themselves.

The race starts at Kumara and follows the Wilderness Trail for 25.5kms to the finish in Greymouth. The laps are 8km, 5km, 6km and 6.5km.

Conditions were very testing with rain and a cold wind throughout the race.

Helen Bancroft reaped the rewards of rigorous winter training by claiming victory in Tinwald Cycling Club’s 38km handicap event at the weekend.

Starting off the front mark, Bancroft soon found a steady tempo, and fought on bravely into a strong homeward bound headwind to keep the chasing bunches at bay around the Wakanui-Hakatere course on Sunday.

Matt Donald showed he will be one to watch this season, leading in the chasing group to clinch a runner-up finish.

Sam Baltrop made the first hit-out since his junior days of racing a

memorable one, taking the third place on the podium.

Ross Templeton, Cole Harris and Kyle Gray all produced top drawer performances to round out the top six.

Michael Templeton claimed backto-back fastest time honours, riding the distance in 55 minutes 29 seconds.

Co-markers Steve Hands and Brad Hudson took second and third times respectively.

The juniors and division 2 meanwhile contested a 14km handicap race

earlier in the day.

Sarah Gould went one better from the previous week to lift the trophy and major spoils in the junior race.

Mitch Brookland, fresh from the Yunca Junior Tour of Southland, produced a great ride to take second place, and fastest time honours in the process, with a time of 24 minutes 54 seconds. Showing a great kick to the line was Jack Templeton, who cemented third place.

Daniel Gould was hot on his tail to

finish fourth, followed

by Tegan Marriott and Charlotte Neal who were next across the finish line.

Emma Hudson had the final say in the division 2 battle, to take the win from Janette Hooper and Kenny Johnston.

Next week the club will contest a 45km handicap event around the Dawsons Road block.
