Methven Community Board’s chairman is calling for Chorus to prioritise the town in its fibre roll-out as slow speeds are stunting tourism and business growth. However, Chorus is not planning to do the work until 2021, and is asking residents to continue using its copper network, which has fast broadband through VDSL. Dan McLaughlin said VDSL was fine for a family of three, but once you had a few groups in a ski lodge wanting to stream online channels, the speed

dropped to almost as low as the old days of dial-up. “You get 20 to 30 people in a hotel on VDSL and it’s hopeless,” he said. And many businesses in the growing town stored information in the cloud, and they needed high speeds for downloading and uploading. “It’s hard for some of those businesses to operate when they have such slow broadband speeds,” McLaughlin said. Methven is part of the Governmentbacked ultra-fast broadband programme. Other towns due to be connected around the same time and yet to be con-

firmed are Mt Somers, Rakaia, Ashburton Northpark and an area by Fairton/ Ashburton airport. A Chorus spokesman said the company’s UFB programme began in 2011 and was not due to finish until the end of 2022. It covered more than 350 towns and cities throughout the country. “So as you can appreciate a work programme of this magnitude takes time,” he said.
