Methven Community Board’s chairman is calling for Chorus to prioritise the town in its fibre roll-out as slow speeds are stunting tourism and business growth.

However, Chorus is not planning to do the work until 2021, and is asking residents to continue using its copper network, which has fast broadband through VDSL. Dan McLaughlin said VDSL was fine for a family of three, but once you had a few groups in a ski lodge wanting to stream online channels, the speed

dropped to almost as low as the old days of dial-up.

“You get 20 to 30 people in a hotel on VDSL and it’s hopeless,” he said.

And many businesses in the growing town stored information in the cloud, and they needed high speeds for downloading and uploading.

“It’s hard for some of those businesses to operate when they have such slow broadband speeds,” McLaughlin said.

Methven is part of the Governmentbacked ultra-fast broadband programme.

Other towns due to be connected around the same time and yet to be con-

firmed are Mt Somers, Rakaia, Ashburton Northpark and an area by Fairton/ Ashburton airport.

A Chorus spokesman said the company’s UFB programme began in 2011 and was not due to finish until the end of 2022.

It covered more than 350 towns and cities throughout the country.

“So as you can appreciate a work programme of this magnitude takes time,” he said.

Methven calls for fibre quicker

Young artists put best feet forward Former Ashburton College student Mikayla Begg is among Bachelor of Design students at Ara putting the finishing touches on their third and final year projects.

The final year students are showing off their work to potential employers at a RIPE exhibition that will run at Ara’s Christchurch campus until November 22.

Begg is studying applied visual art and her work for the exhibition is titled Collections from my World 2018.

Having studied drawing, printmaking, woodcut, ceramics and screen printing over her first two years at Ara, she settled on screen printing and textiles for her final year work.

From a packed visual diary of ideas and research, inspired by the natural world, she has turned flowers, natural dyes and rust into whimsical textile-based, multimedia works for RIPE. “In the third year we are more independent and find something that we are really interested in to develop from. We all bounce ideas off each other and the tutors help us to fine-tune them.”

The RIPE exhibition is the culmination of a year’s worth of work by all the students involved, resulting in drawing, prints, sculptures, posters, publications, films and animations representing the visual communication, photography, applied visual art and motion design specialisations.

Watch out for whooping cough

Whooping cough rates in Mid Canterbury have picked up pace as a nationwide epidemic continues.

There have been four cases notified over the past two weeks, representing two males and two females, three aged in their 40s and 50s and one infant.

Medical Officer of Health Cheryl Brunton said children under the age of one were at the

highest risk of serious complications, so it was important babies were vaccinated on time in their first year of life.

Pregnant women were also eligible for free vaccination, providing protection for their newborns and younger babies until they are themselves vaccinated.

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is caused by bacteria transmitted through airborne droplets.

“Immunity to pertussis, whether acquired through vac-

cination, or from having the infection, wanes over time, which is why we often see cases in older age groups as has been the case in Ashburton District,” Dr Brunton said.

She said with the four recent cases she could not comment on whether or not they had all yet recovered, as the Canterbury District Health Board did not have this information.

“However, it is not unusual for people with pertussis to have

a persistent cough for several weeks or months, even when they are no longer infectious,” she said.

Mid Canterbury has had a bad run of pertussis, with 10 cases in December last year, followed by three each in January and February, dropping to zero for the months of March, June and August, and one each for the months of April, May, July and September, picking up to four for October.

From P1 The work in Methven is due to be completed mid-2022, and will involve taking fibre optic cable down every street in the coverage area. If people decide they wanted to connect, they place an order and Chorus takes the fibre into their house.

The spokesman said fibre would give a dedicated and consistently reliable connection.

“It isn’t just about doing one thing online much faster. It’s about everyone at your place being able to do everything they like online, all at the same time.”

But scheduling the roll-out was complex and factors to be taken into consideration included availability of contractors and running it in a functional way to ensure the programme was efficient.

Skyrocketing data use was driving the demand for household fibre. The average New Zealand home used about 226 gigabytes of broadband data last month, compared to 44 gigabytes at the start of 2015.

Meanwhile, the Ashburton District Council has stalled footpath renewal work in Methven until the cable is installed. About $70,000 allocated each year for this work will accumulate and be spent on catching up after the installation.

Footpath repairs will continue to be made in the meantime.

School’s out for teachers’ strike action

There would also be an opportunity for people to ask questions and to discuss issues so they were well informed ahead of the electronic ballot that would be held once the national strike meetings were completed, he said.

Following today’s meeting, at about 11am, teachers will be joined by students and parents to march down Wills Street and both sides of East Street, chanting and singing.

They will stop at the East Street fountain and will wrap their protest march up in the West Street carpark opposite McDonald’s.

As well as having their wage issues addressed, teachers also want several issues addressed to improve the classroom experience for students.

They want class numbers reduced for Year 4 to 8 students from 29 to 25 and they want a significant increase in the amount of teacher release time.

The current two days per term falls woefully short of what is actually needed, Tonks said.

A special needs co-ordinator for every school, so children with additional needs have a dedicated expert available, also needs to be given priority.

Currently this work is almost always tacked on to the roles of teachers.

To parents it might be an inconvenience, to kids the gift of a day off school, but to Ashburton’s primary school teachers, today’s strike action is serious business, it’s about getting a better deal for students.

Ashburton’s teachers are joining their counterparts around New Zealand in a series of rolling strikes across New Zealand and while pay rates are a big part of it, they are about much more, Ashburton NZEI representative, Jade Tonks, said.

Today around 250 teachers will meet at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre where they will be updated on negotiations with the Government by NZEI national secretary Paul Goulter.

The meeting will provide an opportunity for teachers to hear about the issues first-hand, Tonks said.

“Once everyone has those facts then it’s up to each one of us to make decisions.”

The meeting is not about voting; this will take place online in about two weeks, she said.

Goulter said he would be providing teachers and principals with an update on where negotiations with the Government were at and what the latest offers were.

Free check-ups prove popular

Ashburton residents had one of their first opportunities for a free check-up for one of the leading causes of strokes in New Zealand.

The Stroke Foundation of New Zealand’s new blood pressure testing van was in town yesterday, ready to test as many people’s blood pressure as possible.

Stroke Foundation of New Zealand community stroke adviser Christine Holling was operating one of the testing machines in the van and was pleased with the number of people visiting.

“A few years ago nobody knew what their blood pressure was,

but now we have people coming in knowing if they have a high blood pressure and they are more aware of it,” Holling said.

“More people now know what it is and are more aware of lifestyle things that have an effect on it.”

High blood pressure contributes to 90 per cent of stroke cases and it can affect people of all ages.

Holling says she has worked with a 23-year-old who had a stroke.

While there were plenty of people visiting the van, one trend that pleased Holling was the number of men getting tested.

“We have had a really good number of men coming through which is great as they are often the most reluctant to get their blood pressure checked,” she said.

Cost can be a big turn-off for people getting their blood pressure checked, but Holling said the chance to get it done for free holds big appeal.

“If they do come back with a high blood pressure we advise them to go and visit their GP to check things further,” she said.

The van has facilities to test two people at a time and will continue its trip to the North Island with the expectation it will visit Ashburton again next year.

In brief Cow on the loose Residents of Racecourse Road and West Street got a surprise on Monday night around 9pm when they saw a stray cow on the loose.

Police received three reports in a 15 minute period of a cow travelling southbound down the Rakaia highway, before it was later spotted on West Street and Racecourse Road. The cow was described as having a brown complexion and an overweight build. Animal control were called.

Boil water notice lifted

Indian-themed garden officially opened Creating an Indian-themed garden at the Ashburton Domain kept volunteers busy on Saturday. The Welcoming Communities initiative is the town’s first cultural-themed garden, recognising the district’s growing cultural and ethnic diversity. Ashburton District Council open spaces team worked closely with the Ashburton Indian Multicultural Trust to design the garden, raise seedlings, and recreate an Om symbol in the triangle flowerbed near the waterwheel and duck pond in the domain. In Hinduism and Buddhism the symbol is a sound and is a powerful mantra often used in meditation, yoga and other Indian spiritual practices. The garden was officially opened on Saturday.

College rapt with ERO report

As the school year wraps up, his school is ending 2018 on a high note, says Ashburton College principal Ross Preece.

The college has just received its three-yearly ERO report and while the details have not yet been publicly released, Preece said staff have seen the report and they’re rapt with its findings.

Every ERO report notes issues that need some action to be taken, he said, but overall the college was given a good pass mark

and retained its three-yearly visit status.

“We’re very happy with the report, there were no wholesale changes required.”

An area noted for improvement was accelerated progress.

This covers students who may be struggling with a subject, students at risk as well as gifted and talented students and the ministry wanted to see greater gains in this area.

“We might have an overall improvement of one mark; they have identified priority learners

as needing to accelerate by 1.2 marks. It’s up to us to work out how to do this, but the issue is we don’t want to be testing students all the time,” he said.

He described improvements in this area as being an aspirational goal.

The ERO team visited the college in week seven of term three and the school received a draft report on the last day of the term.

Schools have an opportunity to dispute findings, but there was virtually nothing in the report that warranted any discus-

sions, Preece said.

“We’re working towards their recommendations but we can now get on with exciting things, such as curriculum development.”

The final report will be presented to staff and the college board and will then be available online.

The college is on three-yearly visits from the ERO team, but 10 per cent of schools require one or two-yearly visits and another 10 per cent are visited only four or five-yearly.

Home and Garden tour a success Some of the Methven area’s most exquisite properties were on show at the weekend.

The Methven and Foothills House and Garden Tour 2018 attracted good numbers, and organisers are thrilled with the success of the event.

The fourth annual tour raised an estimated $11,600, with final figures yet to be confirmed.

This is a slight increase from last year.

“So for the Methven Care Trust, this is always rewarding for all the effort of the many volunteers and home owners involved,” said trust fundraising co-ordinator Sue van den Heuvel.

There was a total of seven properties, one of these hosting a barbecue, plant stall, raffle sales, and a display of vintage and classic cars.

Public good ahead of reform urged

Ashburton has added its voice to other local authorities around New Zealand in calling on the government to take the mandatory aggregation of water assets off the table.

The request has been made in a Local Government New Zealand (LGNZ) position statement on the Three Waters Sector, ahead of a planned government review.

The review indicates that aggregation of water assets could become mandatory, but LGNZ believes the one-size-fits-all policy will not work for all local authorities.

Local authorities are the best possible managers of water supplies on their own patch, LGNZ president Dave Cull said.

Local government believes there are four principles that are key to achieving the balance between providing New Zealand’s communities with high quality water infrastructure and services that are affordable in the longterm.

“Local authorities have decades long experience operating and maintaining the country’s three waters infrastructure. We’re also responsible to our communities for the costs of providing this infrastructure. This gives us a unique perspective on how to proceed with reforming the regulations that govern the three waters space,” Cull said.

While LGNZ understood the public’s urgency to see water standards tightened up after the Havelock North contamination

incident, it also recognised that making regulatory decisions in a hurry could produce unforeseen and costly consequences down the road, he said.

“The four principles LGNZ was launching tapped into local authorities’ collective experience in the three waters sector and would provide an essential framework on which to build a robust regulatory structure to ensure we continue to deliver high quality water services.”

It wants fixing drinking water treated with urgency; any reforms in this area should be a priority.

LGNZ wants the government to set hard drinking water standards, and establish a strong regulator to police these standards.

Wastewater and stormwater assets, however, were long-lived,

and it takes many years of planning and investment to change performance outcomes. New freshwater quality standards were introduced in 2017, and we should allow efforts to meet these standards to run their course before introducing new requirements, Cull said.

To drive quality across all three waters, central government should focus on getting the incentives right to drive behaviour, he said.

“Setting hard quality across all three waters, backed by rigorous compliance enforcement, will force service providers to lift their performance. At the same time it will open the door to innovation, as service providers experiment with different technologies and ownership models to meet

these standards.” While there were challenges at the margins, by and large New Zealand’s water system was far from broken, Cull said.

“As a sector, local government accepts that change is coming to the way we provide water services to our communities.

“Our 20th century service delivery model cannot cope with current and future population and land use change pressures.”

While LGNZ was open to embracing change by collaboratively working on a range of policy options to deliver the quality of water, be it waste, storm or drinking, what it did not want was a policy fix that failed to recognise the reality that New Zealand was made up of a multiplicity of diverse communities. he said.

Cartwright to lead inquiry The Government has announced the terms of reference for its public inquiry into the Earthquake Commission and appointed former governorgeneral and High Court judge Dame Silvia Cartwright to lead it.

“The aim of the inquiry is to learn from the experience of the Canterbury earthquakes and ensure that the Earthquake Commission is fit for purpose in future events,” Minister for Christchurch Regeneration Megan Woods said yesterday.

“The insurance system as a whole, including EQC’s role in that system, needs to be ready to deliver services to those affected by the next big event, whenever or wherever that happens,” Woods said in a statement.

A Royal Commission of Inquiry into the EQC was a manifesto promise for Labour before last year’s general election.

Woods said yesterday the inquiry would not consider past insurance settlements or current claims and would not comment on previous decisions made by the courts on insurance-related matters.

The focus of the inquiry was on the handling of insurance claims by EQC and, where appropriate, other insurers following the Canterbury quakes.

There were other avenues for claimants to pursue individual cases, including the recently announced Greater Christchurch Claims Resolution Service.

“It’s important to this Government that the people of Canterbury get the chance to have their say and that the whole country can learn from the experiences of the Canterbury earthquakes,” Woods said.

The inquiry, the first of its kind under the Public Inquiries Act 2013, will have all the powers of a royal commission, be independent of government and make its report to the Governor-General.

Dame Silvia Cartwright It will report back by the end of June, 2019. The Insurance Council of New Zealand (ICNZ) said it was pleased the focus of the inquiry would be on lessons learned from the Canterbury earthquake experience and would consider other models such as that deployed after the Kaikoura earthquake.

Shortly after the Kaikoura earthquake in 2016, insurers and the EQC signed a memorandum of understanding under which insurers acted as agents of EQC, assessing and managing claims for their customers.

That was a significant departure from the model used in Canterbury in which claimants had to first lodge a claim with EQC, then EQC would need to seek validation that they were insured.

“The Kaikoura model has been incredibly effective,” said ICNZ chief executive Tim Grafton.

“In two years, 99.8 per cent of all domestic claims and 99.2 per cent of total claims have been resolved.”

“Under changes that come into effect in July next year, insurers will be responsible for managing and settling all contents claims,” Grafton said.

If the insurer is going to be on the spot in any event, why would any model also require EQC be present too? This is the model for the future and we will be submitting such to the inquiry,” he said.

Teachers, striking for every child

W

hen primary teachers opted to take a second day of strike action within two months, plenty of parents around New Zealand would have gritted their teeth and wondered how they’d juggle the unexpected day off for their kids along with their own work commitments.

A lot probably wondered what teachers had to strike about, why they couldn’t be contented with a regular pay cheque and endless holidays every year. Really?

Unbelievably that’s a perception that’s still rattling around in most communities – that teachers have it easy.

That might have been the job 20 years ago, but not today.

Ask most teachers what time their day starts and ends and they’ll tell you it’s long before the first child arrives at school and hours after the last one leaves.

And holidays? In a two-week break many teachers are at school for a fair slice of that time. It’s called catching up and then preparing for the next term.

do aside from stand in front of a classroom drilling facts into unwilling heads and they’ll ask you where you want them to start.

The job of a teacher has to be right up there in terms of importance. They’re charged with ensuring each child in their care has an equal opportunity to receive a first class education, every day of the school year.

And that’s just for starters.

Teachers are now much more than teachers, they’re social workers, health workers, counsellors, behavioural experts, extenders of the gifted, supporters of those who struggle to learn, crowd controllers, organisers of extra curricula activities and that’s just

for starters.

That bundle of jobs might just be manageable for a teacher with five children in a classroom. Make that 30 kids and it’s impossible.

If striking for money doesn’t sit well with you, put aside the cash claims and focus on the rest and you’ll find they’re not wanting a lot, just the things that will make classroom life better for students – lower class numbers, relief teachers and a bit more support so they can get on and do what they’re actually trained for – teaching kids the stuff they’ll need to get on and make a decent way through life.

As parents we all want the best for our children. We want them

to have every chance possible to achieve the best they’re capable of achieving, but they can’t do that on their own.

When they enter the school system parents are handing over a very large slice of their child’s life to a stranger they assume is well trained and well equipped to take them on the next stage of their learning journey.

Our teachers might be well trained for the job, but as long as they’re overworked, underpaid and poorly resourced they’ll never be able to live up to their own expectations in the classroom, let alone the expectations of parents.

And when that happens everyone loses – most of all the kids.

Brace yourself to face NZ’s cruel past

e’d all like to think that the abuse of children in state care or religious institutions belonged to the ancient past.

Some would say what’s the point of spending almost eighty million bucks to dwell on what’s happened in the past?

It’s just regurgitating the shame of a nation, of our cruel past that most of us had no part in, either as a victim or a perpetrator, and we’d all prefer to forget it.

It most certainly is unsavoury, none of us will get any pleasure out of the Royal Commission set up to look for the next four years into our dark past, going back to 1950, as the Australians have just done.

But not to acknowledge it is an abrogation of what we hopefully

are, or should be – a caring society where we look out for each other. The need for the commission, an acknowledgement that there’s been a silent, desperate voice out there screaming to be heard, but no-one up until now has been listening.

For the victims it’ll give them some sort of closure, if that’s possible, and for the institutions it’ll send a very clear message that children are there for care, not cruelty.

And for those of you who feel you grew up in a land of milk and honey, the Australian experience should make you think again.

During their five-year inquiry more than 4000 institutions were identified as places where abuse occurred. Disturbingly the commission discovered that some leaders found it was their primary responsibility to protect their institution’s reputation –

and the person being accused of abuse which allowed them to continue it, sometimes over decades.

The Government here was right to extend the inquiry to religious institutions. It was originally focused only on state care.

In Australia more than 37 per cent of the victims were abused in religious institutions, 64 per cent of them were male with males responsible for 94 per cent of the abuse.

The average age of the victim was 10 and sadly more than 60 per cent abused in a Catholic institution, 15 per cent Anglican with the Salvation Army responsible for seven per cent of the abuse.

Obviously many recommendations were made but one of the most sensible when it came to Catholics was for the Australian

Bishops to ask the Vatican to relax celibacy rules even though of course in itself it wasn’t identified as the reason for child sex abuse, but it may have heightened the risk, we’re told.

Nothing from the Vatican on that front.

As tragic as it is there’s no reason for thinking that they’ll find anything wildly different in this country.

But if it makes life safer for the vulnerable in future and gives some solace to those who’ve suffered in the past it’ll be worth it.

Give away shop closure All I’d like to say is how hypocritical of our Ashburton District Council.

What about the “squatter” in what was Ashburton’s information centre, if that was on a private property the council would have had that building removed as it no longer is used for the purpose it was consented for.

And to change the consent for it to be used on site for another purpose is even more hypocritical.

California fire toll at 42 The dead were found in burned-out cars, in the smouldering ruins of their homes, or next to their vehicles, apparently overcome by smoke and flames before they could jump in behind the wheel and escape.

In some cases, there were only charred fragments of bone, so small that coroner’s investigators used a wire basket to sift and sort them.

At least 42 people were confirmed dead in the wildfire that turned the Northern California town of Paradise and outlying areas into hell on earth, making it the deadliest blaze in state history. The search for bodies continued.

Hundreds of people were unaccounted for by the sheriff’s reckoning, four days after the fire swept over the town of 27,000 and practically wiped it off the map with flames so fierce that authorities brought in a mobile DNA lab and forensic anthropologists to help identify the dead.

Stan Lee, Marvel’s iconic superhero creator, has passed away and online, the tributes are pouring in, in his honour.

Many stars, peers and fans alike have taken to social media to remember Lee, who died yesterday at 95. Kiwi star Karl Urban, who recently starred as Skurge in Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, was among many to share their thoughts. He wrote: “Legend. Godspeed Stan, I feel blessed to have known you. You made this place better and brought joy to everyone you met. Rest In Peace.” Fellow Marvel star Chris Evans also tweeted, saying: “There will never be another Stan Lee . . . He exuded love and kindness and will leave an indelible mark on so, so, so many lives.”

Israel, Hamas trade fire Palestinian militants bombarded Israel with dozens of rockets and mortar shells on Monday, while Israeli warplanes struck targets throughout the Gaza Strip in what appeared to be the most intense exchange of fire since a 2014 war.

Palestinian officials said at least three people, including two militants, were killed by Israeli fire and nine were wounded, and an Israeli airstrike destroyed the ruling Hamas group’s TV station.

In Israel, the national rescue service said at least 20 people were wounded, including a 19-year-old soldier and a 60-year-old woman who were in critical condition.

Early yesterday, Israeli media reported that a man was found dead under the rubble of a building in the southern coastal city of Ashkelon hit

by Gaza rockets.

Gaza’s health ministry, meanwhile, said a 22-year-old Palestinian who was wounded in an earlier airstrike died, putting the Palestinian death toll since the current flare-up started late Sunday to 11, the majority of them militants.

The fighting cast doubt over recent understandings brokered by Egypt and UN officials to reduce tensions.

Just a day earlier, Israel’s prime minister had defended those understandings, saying he was doing everything possible to avoid another war.

The United Nations said it was working with Egypt to broker a halt in the violence. “Rockets must STOP, restraint must be shown by all!” the UN Mideast envoy’s office tweeted.

Tough deposit rule may be relaxed

Barbecue woes: Lamb and sausage prices on the rise The summer tradition of the Kiwi barbecue is set to take a bigger bite out of Kiwi wallets this summer.

Data released by Statistics New Zealand showed lamb chop prices jumped 7.7 per cent from September, reaching a record high $17.12 a kilogram, while the cost of sausages climbed 4.9 per cent to $10.30 a kilo, according to Stats NZ. “Strong demand for exports of New Zealand meat, particularly lamb, and also falls in the New Zealand dollar, helped push our meat prices up,” consumer prices manager Geraldine Duoba said.

However, the price of sirloin and porterhouse steak eased from the recent high in September to $30.72 per kilogram.

Overall, meat, poultry and fish prices rose 2.4 per cent in October.

But there was good news for the vegetarians out there.

Keeping costs in check, vegetable prices dropped 8.7 per cent in October, following a similar slide in September. Tomato prices sank

Compared with a year earlier, food prices climbed 0.6 per cent, bolstered by a 2.9 per cent gain in restaurant meals and ready-toeat food prices and a 2.6 per cent increase in meat, poultry and fish prices. A drop in vegetable and fruit prices, down 5.6 per cent, helped keep a lid on overall food inflation for the year.

Leisure giant eyes Waiwera thermal resort A giant Australasian leisure business, which runs 10 New Zealand pools, wants to talk to the owners of the Waiwera Thermal Resort with a view to re-opening that complex shut since February.

Damian Gorman, business development manager of the large Victorian-headquartered Belgravia Health & Leisure Group, said his business was interested in starting the discussions.

“We are willing to assess the options to invest and reopen the hot pools. Our hot springs venues are world class,” Gorman said, citing the Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa in Victoria and Rotorua’s Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa, due to open next year.

Evan Vertue, Waiwera’s project manager, said he was “familiar with their operations” and would make contact with them.

A lease on the pool complex was cancelled last month after a twoyear period of sporadic leasehold payment defaults, the resort’s landowner said in October. Locks were changed and a notice posted on the front door.

The complex was leased to Russian billionaire Mikhail Khimich whose business ran the pools but shut them earlier this year for renovation.

Household indebtedness has increased dramatically in New Zealand in the past 30 years. In 1988, the average household owed about $16,000 and had an income of about $35,000 – a debtto-income ratio of 46 per cent.

By the end of 2017, that ratio had risen to 168 per cent, following a 10-fold increase in average household debt to almost $160,000, while average incomes had only slightly less than tripled to $95,000.

D-day could be approaching for tough lending rules, requiring home hunters to have a minimum 20 per cent deposit to qualify for a mortgage.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand said yesterday it is evaluating whether to further ease mortgage curbs and will update the market in its upcoming financial stability report (FSR), deputy governor Geoff Bascand said.

“The question we are assessing is whether the same restrictions are needed in the current environment where debt levels remain high but are not deteriorating, now that bank lending standards have tightened significantly and rapid growth in credit and house prices have stabilised. If these conditions continue, we expect to gradually ease the policy in coming years,” Bascand said.

The FSR is due to be published on November 28.

400g NZ pork mince 1/2 t salt 1/2 t fish sauce 1T fresh ginger, grated 2 spring onions, chopped 1T sweet chilli sauce 1 egg, beaten Small bunch coriander, chopped 1/2 t sesame oil 1 small red chili

■ To make the filling, mix together the cabbage, pork, garlic, ginger, soy sauce and coriander.

■ Place a small amount of filling in the middle of each dumping wrapper.

■ Fold in half to form a half-moon shape.

■ Starting at one end, fold and pinch the wrapper tightly together until completely sealed.

■ Set the dumplings aside to rest for about 15 minutes.

■ In a pan, heat the sesame oil till it’s really hot.

■ Fry one side of the dumplings until golden brown.

■ Carefully pour in 1C of water.

■ Cover with a lid immediately allowing the top side of the dumplings to steam.

■ Once the water has evaporated, let the bottom crisp up.

■ Remove from the pan and plate on a platter or in individual servings.

QUICK MEAL

■ Preheat the oven to 170°C. ■ Beef: Heat a large frying pan

over medium-high heat. Rub the beef with a little oil and brown off on both sides in batches.

Transfer to a casserole dish as you go.

■ Reduce the heat to low and add another dash of oil. Add the onion and cook until soft, about 5

minutes. Add the garlic and coriander and cook for a further 30 seconds until aromatic. Stir in the flour, then pour in the stock and water and bring up to the boil. Add the cinnamon stick, then pour over the beef. Cover and place in the oven to cook for 2 hours.

■ Remove beef casserole from the oven, taste for seasoning and add the apricots and prunes. Return to the oven for a further 30 minutes.

■ Gremolata: Finely chop the garlic and place in a small bowl with the lemon zest and herbs.

Mix well to combine.

■ To serve: Remove beef casserole from the oven, top with gremolata and serve with couscous and greens.

Injuries hit Ireland Ireland have been dealt two major blows with halfback Conor Murray and midfielder Robbie Henshaw ruled out of this weekend’s test against the All Blacks in Dublin.

Murray hasn’t played since June due to a neck injury but, on arrival in Dublin, All Blacks coach Steve Hansen confidently predicted the world-class No. 9 would make a shock return. After thousands of litres of water was pumped and drained off the greens of the Ashburton Bowling Club after Friday’s deluge, bowlers were met by a fine day on Sunday. The tournament was taken out by the team of Min Hill, Williams and Jim Rush. Bradley hoping to peak

BY DARREN WALTON Less is more for Keegan Bradley as the former US PGA Championship winner strives to add the Stonehaven Cup to his 2018 trophy collection.

One of the leading drawcards for this week’s Australian Open, a bleary-eyed Bradley spent just a couple of hours acquainting himself to The Lakes course having only jetted in to Sydney from the US on Monday morning.

“I played the back nine.

“My rule that I’ve kind of come up with over the last year or so, which has helped, is I don’t put much stock into anything that goes on today or tomorrow in terms of my golf,” the American said.

“I don’t practice a bunch, I’m just here to be awake and not go to sleep.

“Over the years I’ve maybe been too worried about how I feel today and how my game is, and now these are just days to get me ready to play on Thursday and it has made a big difference in my finishes.”

Keegan Bradley is focused on winning the Stonehaven Cup. After three lean seasons from 2015-17, Bradley has enjoyed a resurgence on the PGA Tour this year by winning the BMW Championship and a FedEx Cup playoffs event in August.

He opened the 2019 wraparound season with a top-20 fin-

ish at the CIMB Classic and was last start sixth at last week’s HSBC Champions in China.

The 32-year-old, who burst to international prominence by winning his maiden major in 2011, believes he’s in the best form of his career.

“I’m a much more well-rounded player,” Bradley said.

“I had to tackle the putting issue, which was a lot harder than I expected.”

Like Adam Scott, Bradley had to ditch his trusty anchor putter at the start of 2016 – and the results weren’t flash.

“It caught me by surprise with how difficult it was,” he said.

Now committed to “an arm lock style putter”, the world No. 30 craves etching his name on the Stonehaven Cup, a trophy already featuring many of golf’s greatest players including Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player.

“I always remember on the Golf Channel watching these tournaments and as a kid being excited,” said Bradley, whose only previous Australian Open appearance came as a teenager at Moonah Links in 2005.

“Australia plays a big part in the world in golf.

Jamie Joseph has laughed off Eddie Jones’ advice that Japan should seek divine intervention for their clash with England. Crusaders in Suva Super Rugby will return to Fiji in 2019 but the Highlanders will not be involved. The Chiefs are taking a home game to Fiji on June 1 next year, when they will take on the Crusaders. The match will be played at ANZ Stadium in Suva. The sides have played in the stadium twice before, having a win each.

The Highlanders headed to Fiji last season to play the Chiefs in their first trip to the country and ended up losing heavily, 45-22.

Marshall confirms top form Matt Marshall has hit a rich vein of form, claiming back-to-back victories in Tinwald Cycling Club’s races.

Marshall took out the club’s 45km handicap event around the roads of Methven on Sunday, with his efforts seeing him take home the Peach Cup and the winner’s ribbon.

With several bunches coming together on the bell lap the charge was on to find the front of

the race, and the winning bunch caught the front markers inside the last 4km.

Marshall made the decisive first move in the sprint to the line with Kristine Marriott jumping out of the pack to secure second place. Mark Summerfield finished off the race strongly to claim the final podium position.

Paul Sinclair, Ross Templeton, and Rob Hooper rounded out the top half dozen.

Scratch marker Hayden Jefferson continued his good form securing fastest time honours, covering the distance in a slick 64.46 minutes.

Co-markers Tony Ward and Brad Hudson secured second and third time.

The juniors and division two riders contested a 15km handicap event.

Zoe Spillane rode a super race to take the win while Zac Brook-

land kept the pressure on for the entire race to claim second spot, holding out his older brother Mitch, who charged into third place and in doing so took fastest time honours, riding the distance in 29.24 minutes.

Novak Djokovic has made an impressive start to his campaign for a sixth ATP Finals title by dismissing John Isner in their opening match.

A day after a ceremony to mark ending the season as world No.1, Djokovic underlined his status in a near-faultless 6-4 6-3 victory iagainst the tournament debutant.

His driver, Todd McCarthy, was full of admiration for the horse, but also disappointed.

“It’s always hard when you only get beat that far in big races and you’ve had to do a lot of the work.”

It was another watershed day for Purdon and Rasmussen – they won eight of the 12 races on the card, even more remarkable because they only had runners in nine races.

That’s the tentative six-month plan for champion trotter Speeding Spur after a courageous win in the New Zealand Trotting Free For All yesterday.

Managing owner Andrew Grierson, the head of Woodlands Stud, made the surprising declaration soon after the seven-yearold won his eighth career Group 1, in front of more than 20,000 people.

“At the end of the day we’ve got to look at every opportunity for the horse and let the horse do the talking.

“We’ve got the Dominion on Friday, then he’ll go to the Inter Dominions, then probably the new race at Menangle, and then there is the Rowe Cup. “But we’ve got to weigh up, if he’s at the top of his game, whether we go to Europe for the Elitloppet. We’d be silly not to look at going. It’s invite only, but I’m pretty sure they’d look at us.”

The Elitloppet is one of the world’s premier trotting events and has previously been contested by Special Force and Lyell Creek.

Champion reinswoman Natalie Rasmussen has added another jewel to her crown with a first driving win in New Zealand Cup behind Thefixer.

Under Rasmussen’s urgings, Thefixer determinedly wore down the tenacious Australian runner-up Tiger Tara in the last 100 metres of yesterday’s $800,000 Addington feature.

The maiden win in the sulky was Rasmussen’s fifth as a trainer after four previous victories with training partner, Mark Purdon.

“This is the one I hadn’t won and this completes my career,” Rasmussen said.

The win took Purdon to a total of six New Zealand Cup wins as a trainer and he is now tied for the all-time record with Cecil Devine and James Bryce.

“It is just incredible, this is what you strive for,” Purdon said.

Yesterday’s win was Purdon’s first without getting the upclose view of a winning driver.

He was holding down fourth placing with Cruz Bromac, almost two lengths from the Thefixer.

“I was a couple of lengths away and I wasn’t really sure who won.”

A month out from the two-mile feature, Thefixer’s cup preparation was left on shaky ground when he was unable to race after suffering a hoof abscess.

His all-conquering trainers patched him back together and resurrected his campaign just in time for the five-year-old to win.

Though he was fit enough to out muscle his rivals in a fast 3-53.9 winning time, Rasmussen admitted the horse could have stripped even fitter for the race.

“I am sure if he raced again next week he would be fitter again, he is such a good horse.”

“Once the abscess blew out he was fine, but it was the fact he lost fitness and lost preparation.”

Her training and driver victory capped the second half of Rasmussen’s incredible career.

She took a new path in 2011 when she left Queensland to move to Rolleston to work with Purdon.

Then, she left the comforts of a glittering Australian career and her recently retired champion Blacks A Fake, Australasia’s richest ever pacer, behind.

Though she has reached similar heights on both sides of the

“They are two completely different parts of my life, the Blacks A Fake part of it was very good to me because it proved I could match it with the best if I had to.”

Weight only concern Team Rogerson will saddle three runners at Riccarton today, including Group Oneplaced sprinter Ferrando and a pair of talented three-year-olds.

Ferrando will carry top-weight in the Gr.3 Lindauer Stewards’ Stakes Handicap (1200m) and co-trainer Graeme Rogerson is pleased to see the Riccarton track firming under sunny skies.

“He is a dry track horse,” Rogerson said.

“The harder the track, the better it suits him.”

Ferrando resumed from a break with a strong win at Otaki after not getting conditions to suit in a two-start South Australian campaign earlier in the year.

“It rained over there,” Rogerson said.

“It hadn’t rained for months and it rained both times before he ran.

“It was just bad luck.

“He is not well weighted in the Stewards, he’s got 60kg and has been given a Group One winner’s weight so I hope the handicapper is a good judge.”

“She did a few little things wrong last start and we have put a tongue tie on and side winkers on her tomorrow,” he said.

“I think she will make a race of it and we will back her up in the 1000 Guineas.

ENROLMENT CONSULTATION FOR ASHBURTON BOROUGH SCHOOL To avoid overcrowding, or the likelihood of overcrowding, at Ashburton Borough School the Ministry of Education has developed an enrolment scheme. This enrolment scheme is to be implemented from the beginning of Term 1, Monday 4 February 2019.

Under this scheme, students will be entitled to be enrolled if they live within the home zones. There are two home zones for this school. The smaller of the two applies to students in Years 1 to 6, with a larger zone for students in Y7 to 8 to allow all local students access to their most convenient school. TOP TIPS FOR THE COACHES Learning the finer points of shooting from former Silver Ferns shooter Angela Mitchell (left) on Sunday, was Emma Silva.

Mitchell was one of the guests at a session aimed at upskilling coaches, organised by Mid Canterbury Netball’s new coach developer Claire Tappin.

Sunday’s sessions at the EA Networks Centre included a planning session, a shooting session with Mitchell, and question time with current Canterbury Tactix player Kate Lloyd. Tappin is now planning a December workshop for coaches which would include a session with former Mid Canterbury coach Andrea Cousins, who is now a premier grade coach in Christchurch and the assistant coach of the Mainland Beko Netball League side.
