Call for more legal aid lawyers

The demand for legal aid in Ashburton is greater than the amount that can be provided, says a local lawyer.

Marilyn Gilchrist, from Everist Gilchrist Lawyers in Ashburton, said there were not enough lawyers doing legal aid work to meet demand.

In the 2015/16 year only three law firms in Ashburton were paid for legal aid. They were Everist Gilchrist Lawyers, Amicus Legal and Russell, Moon and Fail, which were paid $97,175, $2914 and

$79,900 respectively. However Gilchrist, who does family rather than criminal legal aid, said often lawyers had to be brought in from Christchurch or Timaru to meet demand.

Legal aid is a community service which is funded by the Ministry of Justice and makes lawyers available for people who otherwise might not be able to afford it.

Some lawyers have claimed the flat fee for legal aid is not enough for most cases.

Gilchrist said she thinks it’s hard for lawyers to make a profit out of legal aid clients, let alone break even.

She said a lot of work goes into a legal aid case but lawyers are paid on a fixed rate.

“From talking to other lawyers and from my own experience lawyers put a lot of time into their clients and they aren’t always paid enough,” she said.

Legal aid also requires experience, new lawyers cannot just finish their studies and go into legal aid.

Council committed to town centre

When Ashburton’s retailers and district councillors put their heads together on the future of the Ashburton town centre, they found they were already reading from the same book.

Retailers spokesperson Janice McKay said her group had contacted the council concerned at the lack of pace in the redevelopment of the town centre.

Retailers were struggling and while they’d achieved a onehour-free parking zone on East Street, they were looking for help to revitalise the business area.

The retailers believed the council was a key player in the revitalisation project and should be leading the way. They called a meeting, ready to make a strong pitch for council support and discovered it was already on the

table, McKay said.

“We put our case, they listened and the mayor came straight out and said they were going to create a working party. We were absolutely delighted.”

Knowing the council did not have to be convinced to support their cause was a huge confidence boost for the retailers, she said.

The group reconvenes in December and will decide the end objective and how that could be achieved.

“We did throw around some ideas but decided we should be talking about those at the working party meeting but we also talked a bit about Christchurch and how the city had received a lot of post-earthquake support from the government, where as Ashburton has never asked for that.”

Medical centre build under way Work on the much anticipated new Allenton Medical Centre began last week with workmen digging up and clearing the site. The build is a joint venture between the current Allenton Medical Centre, Gym Company Medical Ltd and Southlink Health. Planning for the construction started last year but was delayed a number of times. In March South Link Health executive director Murray Tilyard told the Guardian the new medical complex could potentially accommodate up to 20,000 patients. South has a similar medical centre in Invercargill, an 870sqm facility that caters to 15,000 enrolled patients. The build is expected to take around 12 months to complete.

Willie McWonka and his crazy team of oompa loompa and other unlikely characters will be starring on stage in Ashburton later this month.

The Julie Hawke School of Dance students are putting in hours of rehearsals ahead of their production Willie McWonka and the Chocolate Castle hitting the Ashburton Event Centre stage.

Between 70 and 75 dancers aged from three to their mid-20s are in-

volved in the production that will cover a broad spectrum of dance and musical styles.

While the dance school involves students from both Christchurch and Ashburton, several local dancers have starring roles including Milly Christie as Charlie Bucket, Lana Donaldson, the Candyman and Brianna Sloper and Tamati Graham.

The oompa loompa, however, the mischievous group of dancers who are found at the heart of every piece of mayhem, are the ones

who hold the show together.

The dancers are not only the stars of stage, they are also their own publicity company and on Thursday they were taking advantage of a school holiday to dress up, hit the town and promote their show.

This is the first time in four years the school of dance has staged its annual production in Ashburton.

Willy McWonka will be on stage in the Ashburton Event Centre on November 19 for two shows, at 1.30pm and 4.30pm.

Call for legal aid lawyers The spokesperson said there was a good mix of experienced senior and junior lawyers in the around 1900 legal aid pool.

Criminal Bar Association president Noel Sainsbury said legal aid was an important service but the fee did not reflect the value.

He said often times law firms will have a large overhead to cover first which can be around $70, so after legal fees, they will struggle to make a profit.

Sainsbury said they were not requesting to be paid a huge amount of money, but they needed more to make legal aid more viable.

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson said there are still lawyers who want to work in legal aid.

Fire crews one big family

Ashburton might be leading the way with the amalgamation of its urban and rural fire crews on one base, but achieving that amalgamation has had its share of challenges, says Ashburton fire chief Alan Burgess.

As part of the review of the New Zealand Fire Service, the Ashburton rural and urban volunteers will soon be based at the urban station on Burnett Street but grinding out the finer details of accommodating 50 firefighters in a space previously occupied by 35

has not been easy, Burgess said.

“We’re still trying to get agreement on what the building might look like; we’re only on plan number seven now but I believe that’s not a record, the record is 16,” he said.

The biggest headache in the redesign is that the existing building’s footprint cannot be extended, rather it will have to be reconfigured to accommodate not only extra personnel but extra gear and vehicles. The one concession has been a planned vehicle shed at the rear of the property.

A meeting on Thursday night made some progress, however, and Burgess believes the two groups are 80 per cent towards signing off a final plan.

“I’m 80 per cent confident we’ll get a result, a satisfactory result – with a bit of give and take.”

Currently the Ashburton rural team is based in a South Street building owned by the Ashburton District Council and Ashburton will be one of the first in New Zealand to bring an urban and rural fire force together on one base.

While the vehicles and equip-

ment are easy to plan for, making provision for extra showers and clothing storage has been more of a challenge, Burgess said.

The national fire service overhaul comes into effect on July 1, 2017 and he’s confident Ashburton’s rural and urban volunteers will be working from one base by that date.

“It’s a long process we’re going through, but I believe it will be a good change.

“The amalgamation of the fires services was a no brainer, it’s just the different dynamics in some areas and they won’t all have an

amalgamation of urban and rural brigades. We’re first off the block.”

In some parts of New Zealand the shape of volunteer brigades is changing with the creation of combined volunteer-professional teams.

A paid, yellow watch works day shift while volunteers take over at night, but that’s way off the radar in Ashburton, Burgess said.

“This happens when brigades struggle to man day shifts but it won’t happen here in the foseeable future, we’re very fortunate with our volunteers, we have a real upside.”

Ashburton team wins petanque contest

It’s quiet at the gate that separates Anna Osborne and Sonya Rockhouse from the bodies of their loved ones who died deep beneath the ground at Pike River mine in 2010.

“Keep out. Trespassers will be prosecuted,” reads a sign in red and black capitals. Beside it, a rough posy of ferns is tied to the fence.

Osborne and Rockhouse lead a group calling for the mine not to be sealed by current owner Solid Energy.

They hope that evidence of what happened could one day be recovered. With others, they are sitting on the road to the mine, north east of Greymouth.

Yesterday was day two of the protest.

It was cold and damp on Saturday night and yesterday.

Visitors continue to arrive, bringing love, support and snacks.

Caravans have been set up, and the sandflies are being well fed.

Osborne’s husband Milton, 54, was one of the 29 men who died in a series of explosions at the mine in November 2010.

Three Ashburton locals made the town proud after winning the petanque triples competition at the weekend.

Over 40 players competed in the annual South Island Chartered Club’s Tournament at the weekend with the triples played on Saturday, the doubles yesterday and the singles finished off today.

The Mid Canterbury triples team, consisting of Neville Bensdorp, Karen Bensdorp and Richard Browne, were awarded a trophy for coming first during Saturday’s games.

The tournament was held at the Ashburton MSA Club and brought petanque players from throughout the South Island.

■ FREE TRADE AGREEMENT

Kerry holds out hope for TPP US Secretary of State John Kerry isn’t writing off the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade agreement, despite president-elect Donald Trump’s vehement opposition to it.

“I think we have to wait and see where we wind up on this debate as the new administration comes in next year,” he said at a press conference in Wellington after holding talks with Prime Minister John Key. “As people examine it and begin to get beyond the campaign, and dig into it, my hope is it can summon the support it needs.”

Mr Kerry said he believed “tweaks here and there” could be done to address some of the concerns about the agreement.

“I think there is enormous room for us to do a better job of it but still not to abandon it.”

Mr Kerry held talks with Mr Key lasting about an hour at Premier House yesterday morning, having flown in from Christchurch after visiting the Antarctic.

Mr Key said they discussed a wide range of international issues, and they both agreed the relationship between the United States and New Zealand was “in the best shape it has been for decades”.

It was Mr Kerry’s first official visit to New Zealand as secretary of state, and he was the highestranking American official to visit Antarctica.

Mr Kerry travelled to Antarctica on board a C-17 Globemaster after being held up for about a day by bad weather.

After meeting Mr Key and before leaving New Zealand, Mr Kerry laid a wreath at the National War Memorial and unveiled a plaque at the site for a future US War Memorial.

Refugee focus The United States has agreed to consider referrals from the UNHCR on refugees who are being detained in Australia’s offshore detention centres, Secretary of State John Kerry has confirmed.

Mr Kerry said in Wellington the US was encouraging all countries to work with the UN to find a “durable solution” for the refugees.

“We in the United States have agreed to consider referrals from UNHCR on refugees now residing in Nauru and in Papua New Guinea,” he said. Mr Kerry said the issue had been a key focus of the leaders’ summit in New York in September.

Influenza history

■ PLAINS MUSEUM

New Zealanders will be able to discover more about those who died in the 1918 influenza pandemic because of a research and clean-up drive at Wellington’s Karori Cemetery. The cemetery contains the remains of at least 720 people who died in the pandemic with Wellington’s council hoping to tell their stories by organising working bees to clean graves sites and research into the lives of at least 75 of the victims. The historic research conducted by genealogists will then be placed on a community website. “We’d (also) love to find living relatives who would be keen to help out with our research,” says project co-ordinator Barbara Mulligan.

People brave the cold for train rides Despite the poor weather, a number of Ashburton people braved the cold and wet and made their way to Tinwald to make the most of yesterday’s open day at the Plains Museum.

The museum was open between 11am and 4pm and people enjoyed a ride on the Historic Dubs and Co A 64 steam train, which was built in 1873.

The museum usually runs their locomotives about twice a month and are next open on Sunday, November 27, which coincides with the Tinwald Christmas Festival.

At the next open day people will have the opportunity to enjoy a ride on the 1877 Rogers K 88, or Washington steam train.

Diabetic options limited This month is Diabetes Action Month, reporter Colin Engelbrecht speaks to Ashburton people about their struggles with the disease.

A lack of community support for diabetics is a key struggle for one Ashburton woman.

Val Goodridge has been living with Type Two diabetes for over 20 years and said she gets frustrated at how hard it is to find cafes in Ashburton that are accommodating to diabetics dietary needs.

Diabetes is a disease caused by the body’s inability to regulate its own blood sugar levels because it cannot create enough insulin, or it has become resistant to insulin.

Type Two diabetes is the most common type of the disease and typically appears later in life.

For many people Type Two diabetes can be prevented by making healthy lifestyle choices, however, Goodridge said Type Two diabetes is not just a disease for unhealthy people.

Goodridge has a family history of diabetes, both her mother and father had the disease and out of her nine other siblings, eight have it as well.

She was first diagnosed in her early forties and initially was put on pills to manage her blood sugar levels, but for years she struggled with stomach problems due to a side effect of Metformin, the medication she was using.

It was only until she was put onto insulin injections when the issues stopped.

Val Goodridge has been living with Type 2 diabetes for over 20 years.

Now 66, Goodridge said it is manageable and she can still enjoy everything, as long as it’s in moderation.

She said she can go out for a meal in the evening but she just has to plan her day and make sure she has smaller meals dur-

ing the day.

However, she finds it hard to go to cafes because none of the cafes in Ashburton offer sugarfree, or even reduced-sugar baking.

At home Goodridge makes her own cakes, including a sugar-

free Christmas fruit cake, which her family enjoys.

She also said it’s hard to find products in the supermarket that don’t contain sugar.

“You can live a long and happy life with diabetes, you just have to do the right things,” she said.

■ INJURED WOMAN

Stab victim on mend, say family A woman found lying critically injured in a paddock south of Auckland has undergone surgery and is on the mend, say family.

The 23-year-old who has a long-term partner and young daughter, underwent surgery for stab wounds on Friday.

Her uncle-in-law said her family, including her partner and mother-in-law, were with her in hospital.

“She came out of surgery last night as far as I know she is ok,” the man said.

He said he “didn’t want to talk about” how the young woman was injured.

Police found the woman critically injured in a Waiuku paddock after concerned members of the public alerted them to a car down a bank.

Responding officers were the first to spot the woman lying near her car, a white Subaru Legacy station wagon.

The surrounding farmland was desolate when police found her.

Investigators scoured the area, but could not find anyone else nearby.

The car appeared to have run off the road and down a small bank, coming to rest against a fence.

Inspector Mark Rowbottom said police were sent to Morley Road in Waiuku at 6.50am on Friday after several members of the public called police to say they saw a car in a paddock.

The women’s belongings were in the vehicle, Rowbottom said.

He said investigations would continue and police were speaking to the woman’s family and friends. “We’re trying to track down her movements.”

The woman lived locally in Franklin, Rowbottom said.

She was in a critical condition when she was airlifted to hospital.

Josh excited about basketball future

Six foot seven inches will feel like an average height for Josh Lowe next year.

The Ashburton College Year 12 student will travel to Orlando and Sarasota in Florida next April to train and improve his basketball skills for two weeks.

The 16-year-old was selected for the IMPACT basketball player development tour after he attended a training camp in Timaru last month.

He was one of 10 players selected from the country and will play for the 17 to 18-year-old Varsity team in America.

Lowe has represented Mid Canterbury, South and North Canterbury and the South Island basketball teams.

He is excited to train in America and compete against a different class of basketballers.

Lowe reckons he will be shorter than most of the other players, something he is not used to but excited about it.

The players will compete in

five to eight games while in Orlando and Sarasota.

Lowe will train in the IMPACT facility which is designed to give a professional approach to a player’s development.

The tour will give Lowe the chance to expose his skills to American colleges which offer scholarships.

He was not a fan of basketball but his mum encouraged him to play in primary school because he was much taller than the other kids, Lowe said.

The love of the sport grew over time and he enjoys working with the team aspect of the game.

His proudest moment was when the South Island team whitewashed the Pacifica Slam Tournament in Port Macquarie, Australia.

Lowe is looking forward to travelling to America, particularly visiting Universal Studios and NASA. Before he embarks on the tour Lowe will travel to Wellington on December 10 as part of another IMPACT Training Camp.

The symposium is held biennially and involves 15 sculptors, carving large pieces of rock into works of art over a two-week period.

The popularity of the event has grown with organiser Brent Holley saying he had had to turn some sculptors away. He does hope in future years to grow the event and attract international sculptors.

The raw materials used are

limestone and bluestone, with carvings completed over the past weekend.

Holley was also involved as a sculptor and began carving stone five years ago.

Sculptors who took part were: Jocelyn Pratt, Rory McDougall, Ruth Killoran, Debbie Templeton-Page, Rex O’Brien, Trevor Nathan, Alan Axten, Tai Meuli, Anna Korverr, Allen Harnett, Jackie Margaret, Moira Crossman, Dav-

ey McGhie and Oriah Rapley.

The Ashburton District Council has contributed $500 for a People’s Choice Award winner.

At the first symposium’s auction, the council bought four pieces for the Ashburton Domain, and another was bought by a family in memory of a lost member and donated for display in the domain.

On auction day there will be a family fun day in the domain.

Love for the drink runs deep James Ford

D

espite the police’s best efforts to warn Riccarton racegoers that drunken antics would not be tolerated, many punters still over-indulged in the drink on Saturday.

In an attempt to curb the ongoing issue, the Canterbury Jockey Club increased security by more than 40 per cent and race patrons were breathalysed on arrival.

This latest booze blip follows the somewhat unfair treatment of New Zealander Jade Jillings.

Jillings made headlines across the globe when photos of her mounting a wheelie bin at Melbourne Cup Day went viral.

Drinking to excess is a reoccurring problem that we seem to have no answer for.

Whether it be race days, holidays or celebrations, alcohol, and probably too much of it, is usually a focal point.

It’s deeply ingrained in our culture.

In my native England, which probably contributed to New Zealand’s drink culture, it is also a never-ending headache – excuse the pun.

Unfortunately, despite the police and race organisers taking a proactive approach to reduce the amount of drunken incidents, it will never fully solve the problem.

As a nation we love alcohol and associate it with the majority of happy times.

Whether it’s socialising with friends or relaxing after a long day at work with a generous glass of wine, alcohol is always present.

So how do we curb the issue?

The public shaming of Jade Jillings certainly isn’t the answer, nor is, seemingly, more security staff.

It’s something that runs too deep to change on one day at one event.

While we must be vigilant about how much booze we guzzle and how it affects others, it will also pay to be more transparent.

It is something that should be addressed from a young age.

Children should be educated in the effects of drinking, both physically and socially.

And the importance of being responsible when they are of an age to drink; breeding a healthier approach to the bottle.

It’s not drinking that is the problem, it’s our lack of self-control when letting our hair down.

Something all us drinkers should keep in mind!

elivering better public services is one of the Government’s priorities. To help keep track of our performance in this area, we set 10 challenging targets to ensure our public services are more productive and efficient and helping the people that need assistance.

Our targets are not soft targets but are designed to measure those areas that are challenges for governments all around the world – such as welfare dependency, crime, child abuse, and educational achievement.

The latest update on our Better Public Services targets shows that early intervention and a social investment approach are yielding steady improvements across many of the targets. The social investment approach uses integrated data to identify and understand the issues that drive, for example, long-term welfare dependence, low rates of early childhood education and low

rates of immunisation.

All targets have improved four years after they were set: ■ In education, more children are starting their education earlier, staying longer, and achieving better results.

Participation in early childhood education is up from 94.7 per cent in 2011 to 96.6 per cent in 2016.

Achievement in NCEA level 2 is up from 74.3 per cent in 2011 to 83.3 per cent in 2015.

The number of 25-34 year olds with NZQF level four or above has increased from 51.9 per cent in 2011 to 56.5 per cent in 2016.

■ In health, more children are being immunised, with an increase from 84 per cent in 2012 to 92.8 per cent.

Meanwhile, rheumatic fever cases have dropped from 177 cases in 2012 to 112 cases in 2016.

■ In the area of welfare dependence, the number of people on a main benefit is down from 295,320 at the end of March 2014 to 279,769 at the end of March 2016.

This equates to a fall of 5.3 per cent and represents savings of $3.6 billion to the taxpayer.

■ While there’s been an increase in crime since the last update, it’s still down 15 per cent overall since 2011.

■ The number of people completing transactions with the Government online is up from 29 per cent in 2012 to more than 49 per cent.

changes in the behaviour and approach of the public service.

When you look behind the headline numbers of some of the results for example, assaults on children, a trend is emerging which shows that while incidences are up slightly due to increased reporting, agencies are starting to connect with the hardest to reach children and families.

Some targets, such as increasing participation in ECE and increasing infant immunisations, get harder to achieve the closer you get to them. To make traction on these last hard-to-shift cases, agencies now need to develop complex interventions with intensive wraparound services.

The Government is working to make sure agency funding is aligned to priorities, is welltargeted and based on evidence of effectiveness so that we can continue to make progress on our ambitious public service targets.

Shooting amid protests As protests against US President-elect Donald Trump entered another day, police in Portland, Oregon, say one person was shot by a man who had gotten into a confrontation with a demonstrator.

Portland police said the person who was shot was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police said they were looking for the shooter, who apparently fled in his vehicle after the weekend attack on a Willamette River bridge.

The shooting followed rowdy protests, when police used tear gas in response to “burning projectiles” thrown at officers, police said on Twitter. Hundreds of people marched through the city, disrupting traffic and spray-painting graffiti.

Authorities reported instances of vandalism and assault during a rally that organisers had billed as peaceful earlier in

the day. In other parts of the country, spirited demonstrations on college campuses and peaceful marches along downtown streets have taken place since Wednesday.

A mainly peaceful protest by about 3000 people ended in Los Angeles early on Saturday with about 200 arrests for failure to disperse after police broke up the lingering demonstration.

Hundreds joined a “love rally” in Washington Square Park in Manhattan.

Evening marches disrupted traffic in Miami and Atlanta.

More than a thousand protesters took to the streets across California after night fell including downtown Los Angeles, where over 200 were arrested a night earlier.

Protests also were held in Detroit; Minneapolis; Kansas City, Missouri; Olympia, Washington and Iowa City.

The group chanted “not my president” and “no Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA.” In Chicago, hundreds of people including families with small children chanted “No hate. No fear. Ashley Lynne Nagel, 27, said she joined a Thursday night demonstration in Denver.

“I have a leader I fear for the first time in my life,” said Nagel, a Bernie Sanders supporter who voted for Clinton.

“It’s not that we’re sore losers,” she said.

“It’s that we are genuinely upset, angry, terrified that a platform based off of racism, xenophobia and homophobia has become so powerful and now has complete control of our representation.”

Death toll rises to 52 in Pakistan blast An explosion claimed by militant group Islamic State has ripped through a Muslim shrine in southwestern Pakistan, killing at least 52 people and wounding scores.

The blast on Saturday at the Shah Noorani shrine occurred while hundreds of people were inside, local district commissioner Hashim Ghalzai told Reuters.

Provincial Home Minister Sarfaraz Bugti said 52 people were killed and that more than 105, including many women and children, were wounded.

“Every day, around sunset, there is a dhamaal (ritual dance) here, and there are large numbers of people who come for this,” said Nawaz Ali, the shrine’s custodian.

The shrine is located in Baluchistan province about 100km north of the port city of Karachi, to where rescue official Hakeem Nasi told Geo TV dozens of wounded were being moved.

The government dispatched 25 ambulances from the nearby

town of Hub to the shrine, said Akbar Harifal, provincial home secretary for Baluchistan. The army was called in to assist with rescue operations, given the remoteness of the site, Bugti said.

It was not clear whether the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber or a planted device, according to Bugti.

The province has seen some of the worst militant attacks this year in Pakistan.

Islamic State said in a statement via its Amaq news agency that its fighters had carried out Saturday’s bombing.

The jihadist group also claimed responsibility for the last major attack in the province, at a police academy last month, that killed around 60 people.

Muslim shrines have often been targeted by militant groups, many of whom adhere to a strict interpretation of Islam that regards veneration of saints at shrines such as Shah Noorani as heresy.

Springsteen stranded Coming across Bruce Springsteen on a broken down motorcycle on the side of the road could probably be a lyric from one of his songs, but it really happened for a group of guys from New Jersey.

A group from the Freehold American Legion was riding after a Veterans Day event when they pulled over to help a stranded motorcyclist who turned out to be The Boss. Ryan Bailey says Springsteen hopped on the back of his bike and they headed to a local bar while he waited for a ride. Dan Barkalow says Springsteen was down to earth and they “talked about motorcycles and his old Freehold days”. Springsteen was raised in Freehold and still lives in New Jersey.

Second baby for Pink Grammy-winning pop star Pink is expecting her second child with husband and motocross champ Carey Hart. The baby news was confirmed at the weekend by Pink publicist Meghan Kehoe after Pink posted a baby-bump shot with five-year-old daughter Willow on Instagram. Film star Robert Redford says he’s retiring soon from acting to focus on directing. In an online interview with his grandson Dylan Redford, the 80-year-old star says he’s getting tired of acting. “I’m an impatient person so it’s hard for me to sit around and do take after take after take,” he says.

Escape to Sharp Island

Hup Mun Bay was a welcome sight after a long and sweaty trek.

I

’m standing at the edge of the ocean in my underpants, water lapping around my ankles, and preparing to dive into the cool water.

This is the last thing I expected to be doing in Hong Kong.

It’s a city known for bustling streets, high-rise buildings, high rents and high population numbers. On Hong Kong Island that’s certainly true. But take an Uber ride away from the city and you’ll find lush countryside, uncrowded beaches and geological treasures.

I’ve come to Sai Kung in the New Territories to hike through Sharp Island. It’s humid. Sweat sticks under the collar of my shirt and, like a true Aussie, I’m hankering for a cool dip in the ocean. But since I forgot my swimmers, I’m in my undies.

Also known as Kiu Tsui Chau, Sharp Island is the largest island in the Kui Tsui Country Park and is part of the Unesco Global Geopark.

The lush green Island is covered in rocks formed from volcanic fragments and magma.

Locals call them pineapple rocks because their cracked surface resembles the fruit’s bumpy skin.

The hike from Kiu Tsui Beach to Hap Mun Bay takes just over an hour. It’s advisable to do it in the winter months of November to March as the summer heat will make it tough.

Guides for the walk can be hired at the Volcano Discover Centre in Sui Kung.

The trail begins at Kiu Tsui Beach where Sharp Island connects to nearby Kiu Tau (island) by a natural stone bridge, called a tombolo. A tombolo is formed when the motion of sea currents pushes coastal sand or gravel towards the shore. The Sharp Island tombolo is exposed at low tide, when it’s possible to walk from one island to the other.

But instead, we’re heading up the hill, ascending a steep set of stairs away from the ocean and

Butterflies flutter constantly across the trail, grabbing onto leaves and resting their wings.

Above us, dozens of kites circle like a cyclone, communicating with each other as they ride the wind.

As I follow the ridgeline I enjoy stunning views of secluded beaches, outlying islands and

the towering mountains of the country park.

Without the high-rise buildings in the distance, it would be hard to believe I am in Hong Kong. It’s stunning.

After a 1.4km hike along a trail littered with gardenia flowers, we’re rewarded with a view of Hup Mun Bay. The bay takes it name from the broken English

form of “half moon” and follows the shape of the beach. After a sweaty hike, it’s a rewarding sight.

Flinging off our sneakers, we delight in the feel of sand between our toes. But it’s not enough; the water is beckoning.

Diving into the water is an instant relief from the humidity and I wash the sweat and grime off my skin.

The water is pleasantly cool, the kind of temperature that makes you want to stay in the ocean forever.

Hup Mun Bay is enclosed by a shark net and there are two floating pontoons a short swim away from the sand where you can rest and lap up the sunshine before diving back into the ocean.

When you’ve finished swimming, you can either walk back along the trail or have the boat pick you up at Hap Mun. Whatever you do, just make sure you pack your swimmers.

MSA repels northern raiders Ashburton MSA has taken out the Ron Skilling Trophy in the annual competition against Kaiapoi Club on Saturday.

The yearly competition is played on Christchurch Show

Weekend and this year Ashburton won 22-12.

Ashburton MSA’s Richard Erpe made one memorable 58 break on the day.

This is the fifth time the two

clubs have met and in last year’s competition Kaiapoi Club took the honours.

Each year the location of the competition alternates between Kaiapoi and Ashburton.

Alastair Benfell, who is the current secretary of the snooker club in the Ashburton MSA said the competition at the tables was fierce but a good day was had by all.

Stockton ready for new start with Breakers

He joins a side with holes to fill, after the Breakers found themselves lacking in key areas in their 86-79 loss to the Cairns Taipans on Friday night.

Now at 4-4 on the ladder, the

Breakers suffered several defensive breakdowns and struggled to penetrate and attack the rim against Cairns, shooting only six free throws.

The arrival of Stockton is sure to aid the Breakers’ cause, as the 25-year-old continues his increasingly worldwide professional basketball journey.

A four year senior at Gonzaga, Stockton’s uninspiring collegiate numbers led to a stint in the NBA Development League, where he shone with the fast-paced Reno Bighorns.

With Reno averaging 133 points per game, Stockton racked up record-breaking statistics, earning a three-game NBA call-up in 2015 with the Sacramento Kings.

No more NBA opportunities came his way however, instead signing a three-year deal with Croatian side Cedevita Zagreb.

Just 12 games into the contract, they parted ways, leaving the Breakers with an opportunity to pounce on a player they had scouted in the past.

Stockton’s game profiles a lot like his father; likely to be one of the competition’s assist leaders while also contributing on the defensive end.

He says his lineage is perfect for his role on his team.

“For a guy who is my height and plays the point guard position, even if he wasn’t my dad I would try to model my game after him.

“I can call someone at any time of the day and have the best insight – possibly on Earth – so I accept anything he has to say.”

Coach Paul Henare voiced the need for a player with a similar skillset to the injured Ben Woodside, and Stockton has already been receiving plenty of insight from the man he is replacing.

“Talking to Ben, he’s been really helpful in explaining what guys do.

“He has a great mind for the game so just being around him, being around the team and getting a feel for chemistry and seeing where I can fit in.

“It’s my job to make sure everything runs smoothly – I’m anxious to get started.”

Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland believes his undersiege employees can’t use poor preparation and a cramped schedule as excuses for the side’s current batting crisis.

Australia were skittled for 85 after being sent in on day one of second test against South Africa, while they suffered a shambolic collapse of 10-83 on day two of the first test.

Australia’s lowest test total at home since 1984 prompted coach Darren Lehmann to admit things were at crisis point.

Criticism has been levelled at Sutherland, Lehmann and countless others since Australia lost the first test of their home summer for the first time since 1988.

Many pundits have bemoaned the international and domestic schedules – notably that Australia’s test squad only had one day-night Sheffield Shield clash to prepare for the Proteas.

The opening round of the Shield was preceded by the domestic one-day competition, while the likes of Steve Smith and David Warner were in South Africa for a one-day tour.

“I’ve heard a little bit of commentary around preparation and I think it’s interesting,” Sutherland told ABC Radio.

“That criticism ... I don’t think the preparation is anything that Australian cricket can complain about because South Africa have had the same schedule.

“We have both played each other in one-day matches in October, came through here, had various forms of long-form or other preparatory matches.

“They played a game in Adelaide under lights as (the Test squad had) Shield cricket played under lights, so if you draw that comparison the team we are playing against hasn’t had any different preparation.

“Ideally you might have a different preparation but the fact of the matter is you can’t.”

Sutherland reiterated his organisation wanted to play less international cricket in an effort to ease the burden on players and make matches more relevant.

“The schedule is difficult and at ICC level it’s something we’re working very hard on,” Sutherland said. “To try and get more structure to refine the way in which international cricket is played and to be honest ultimately play less international cricket.”

ALB hints at greatness

By GreGor Paul And they say there are no surprise selections in rugby anymore.

To that you can answer Anton Lienert-Brown, who is the most extraordinary All Black plug-in for quite some time.

Not even the selectors – who rarely miss a trick these days – seemed to know what they had on their hands.

He wasn’t exactly first in the queue.

The 21-year-old is opening up the midfield to possibilities which began to die in days when players scraped a living by scraping loot out of their boots and weren’t fit enough to shut down the gifted ones.

Lienert-Brown shone against Italy, his main man-of-the-match challenger being that most inventive of props – yes props – Wyatt Crockett.

When in Rome, please don’t do what the Romans do when it comes to rugby.

The rugby team representing the country famed for its clever defending in football was as subtle and accurate as a wrecking ball operated by Donald J. They hoofed the ball away and hoped like hell, and quite wrongly, that it wouldn’t come back with interest from the world’s top ranked team.

The most interest, in terms of class, came via Lienert-Brown’s finest moments.

Anton Lienert-Brown has burst on to the All Blacks scene.

His arrival on the test scene came with virtually no fanfare.

There was far more excitement around Malakai Fekitoa’s elevation two years ago, but unfortunately for the Highlander he is already looking like yesterday’s man compared to the Chiefs’ wunderkind.

Clever passes. Clever kicks. Or just plain clever.

Lienert-Brown has it all.

His set up of the Waisake Naholo try at the Stadio Olimpico looked kind of simple, and yet who else is doing this sort of thing, a bit of drift and little inpass opening up a perfect gap.

He took out two defenders brilliantly before unleashing his

trademark offload for Dagg’s try.

Lienert-Brown is a magician building an aura which might one day rival those of old legends of the backline, like JB Smith or George Nepia.

His best moves feel like gifts from the old days, and ones which can’t be quantified by rugby’s descent into analysis by numbers.

Test midfields are stacked with quasi-loose forwards and a sad lack of imagination.

Conrad Smith ruled there with a long stride, relentless team ethos and a sharp mind, but Lienert-Brown has subtle skills.

It’s like discovering a Rembrandt hanging in the local library.

The only question now is whether he is a No. 12 or a No. 13.

I suspect, long term, it is second five-eighths, because Steve Hansen will already be eyeing Rieko Ioane at centre.

The rise of Ryan Crotty and the potential rise of Sonny Bill Williams from the sick ward complicates things, so Lienert-Brown will probably find himself at centre in the short term.

Wherever, it is a wonderful prospect.

Despite problems handling Israel Folau, he is by reputation a good defender, so absolutely everything is in place.

He’ll need it, because he will already be a marked man.

More than anything, LienertBrown is a joy to watch and has produced something special, that works, in almost every test he has played.

He doesn’t overplay his best moves either.

He might appear different to the following players, but reminds me of their class – the likes of Tim Horan, Bruce Robertson, Mike Gibson, Phillipe Sella.

Seriously.

And he has a lot less room to work with than that lot had.

Okay, the danger is over-selling his potential. But I can’t help it.

As for the skilful Crockett, he is a bench regular who epitomises a team ethos.

He is forever the bridesmaid who can outshine the bride.

Skelton cops Cheika blast Giant Wallabies forward Will Skelton has been lashed for an ill-disciplined brain explosion which nearly cost Australia a shot at winning the rugby grand slam.

The powerhouse lock joined the action with 18 minutes to play against Scotland at Murrayfield, and the Wallabies down by six points.

Coach Michael Cheika would’ve been eager to see the 140kg monster make his mark on the game – but not in quite the manner he did on Sunday.

With Australia having been awarded a penalty five metres out from Scotland’s tryline, Skelton made a crude, ill-advised, noarms clear-out on the Dark Blues’ star lock Johnny Gray.

The Television Match Official immediately intervened and the penalty was overturned.

In addition, Skelton was shown a yellow card for foul play in a decision which looked certain to kill Australia’s momentum, their chance at pulling off a victory and ultimately any chance they had at becoming the first Australian team since 1984 to complete the grand slam.

Skelton’s blushes were saved by a superb individual try to Tevita Kuridrani four minutes from time which sealed a stunning 23-22 victory – but they weren’t enough to appease Cheika, who had no objections to the sin-binning. “(Skelton has) got to put his arms around that guy and he knows that. It’s ill- disciplined from him,” Cheika said.

“Those decisions come down to the ref – whether it’s a penalty or a yellow, but regardless it’s an offence.

“He doesn’t have to do it. We had our own penalty, it’s after the whistle and it wasn’t clever.

“I don’t even need to tell him so I don’t think he’ll be worried about me saying it here.”

Skelton returned to the field with one minute left in regular time and was part of the gritty Wallabies defence which repelled phase after phase of Scottish attacks in the famous victory. - AAP

By GreGor Paul It was Steve Hansen who masterminded the big 68-10 win in Rome, but ultimately it might not be him who benefits most from it.

The bulk of the team that played Italy have 2020 written all over them.

Many of them will play tests between now and then, but it will be following the inevitable post 2019 World Cup cleanout that the guts of this team come together again as first choice All Blacks.

Building the next generation is viewed by Hansen as a significant part of his role.

He’s building a team for the here and now as his main priority – but somewhere in his thinking is the need to slowly develop

a core group of players who will reach 2020 with enough experience and ability to ensure the All Blacks can safely transition out of 2019 when a number of senior players are almost certainly going to call it quits.

It is what he did between 2012 and 2015: he carefully introduced and then slowly built the experience of the likes of Sam Cane, Beauden Barrett, Malakai Fekitoa, Tawera Kerr-Barlow and Aaron Cruden to the point where all of them had reasonable and in some cases extensive exposure to test football before this year.

That continuity has been vital in the All Blacks’ success and the test in Rome was the first major step in the new continuity plan.

Codie Taylor’s immaculate lineout work, high work rate and

powerful defence were signs he will seamlessly succeed Dane Coles when the time comes.

Patrick Tuipulotu was all the better for his experience against Ireland and carried with the sort of leg drive and athleticism that the coaches hoped to see.

Both Elliot Dixon and Steven Luatua had the necessary physical presence and skills to make big contributions.

Anton Leinert-Brown and Malakai Fekitoa clicked as a midfield combination. The composure and timing of the former was a factor in bringing out the best in the latter.

Damian McKenzie took enough risks to be a handful for the opposition but not so many as to endanger his team and crucially, he looked after the ball better.

A try-scoring début from 19year-old Rieko Ioane confirmed he has the power and awareness to play at the highest level.

With the exception of Dixon, all of those players are 25 or younger and not only could they form the backbone of the All Blacks side in 2020, many of them could push on to 2023.

“We have got 18 new players from last year’s World Cup squad and obviously that is a lot,” said Hansen.

“The group is just starting out and they are playing very well.

But they have tasted defeat so it will be interesting to see how they grow from that.

“But the expectation within the All Blacks is that the next generation is always better than the one before.”

England head coach Eddie Jones declared his side to be nowhere near good enough despite ending a 10-year winless run against South Africa with a comprehensive 37-21 victory.

Two tries in either half from Jonny May, Courtney Lawes, George Ford and Owen Farrell maintained Jones’s 100 per cent record as coach.

England’s winning run now stands at 11 games.

Should they secure victories in their remaining fixtures of the Old Mutual Wealth Series against Fiji, Argentina and Australia then they will match the record of 14 victories in a row set under Sir Clive Woodward in 2003.

Yet Jones was far from satisfied with the performance against a poor Springbok side who capitalised on early English indiscipline before scoring second-half tries through Johan Goosen and Willie Le Roux when the result was already decided.

“We are pleased with the result having not beaten South Africa for 10 years but we are certainly not satisfied with our performance – there are areas of our game that really need tidying up,” Jones said.

“Some of our attack was good today and some was very poor.

“Defensively we gave away a soft try at the end which wasn’t very good and was disappointing.

Overall we got a pass mark today.

“We gave away some silly penalties defensively which we didn’t need to do. We should never give away an offside penalty. We should trust our defence.

“Marland [Yarde] gave one away in the air which we shouldn’t do again. It is just those little bits and pieces we need to tidy.

“It is the difference between playing club rugby and international rugby.”

A week short of the anniversary of his appointment and Jones has transformed the mood around Twickenham, delivering a first Grand Slam in 13 years, a first ever series victory in Australia and now ending their barren run against the Springboks without five first-choice players.

“When I took the job I had no expectations,” Jones said.

“All I knew was that I was inheriting a very good side that was put together by Stuart Lancaster that had oodles and oodles of talent.

My job was to make sure that talent produced performances.

We are starting to get there, but we have got to get better.”

There were several excellent individual performances for Jones to reflect upon.

Scrum-half Ben Youngs set up tries for Ford and Farrell, who scored 19 points, with a pair of show and goes; outside centre Elliot Daly, on his first start, also had a hand in the first-half tries; while lock Joe Launchbury was declared man of the match.

Kiwis longshots for final

By Michael Burgess The Kiwis were almost grounded yesterday in a significant setback for their Four Nations campaign.

If they make the final, which will be through the back door after their shock 18-18 draw with Scotland, they will need a huge improvement to compete at Anfield.

They would have been nervous spectators this morning, willing the Kangaroos to victory, as any other result (an England win or a draw) sees them on the plane home.

That wasn’t in the script after the first-up win over England, which had seemingly set up the

tournament for New Zealand.

The Kiwis had made incremental improvements each week since Perth, but the events in Workington felt like a huge step back.

The fact they were out-enthused

by Scotland was bad enough, but they were also outsmarted.

Twice they gave up crazy penalties as they knelt in the ruck and let the Scottish dummy-half pass the ball into their body.

Sure, it was questionable refereeing by Ben Cummins, who had an ordinary game, but the Kiwis shouldn’t be putting themselves in those positions.

There was also a lack of mental focus.

Letting Scotland back into the game so soon after David Fusitu’a scored his first try was one example, as were several fifth tackle defensive penalties which undid previous hard work.

And then when leading with just over a minute to play, they weren’t urgent enough to secure a short kickoff, from which Scotland grabbed possession and scored.

But there are some reasons for hope.

If the Kiwis make the final next week, they will be outsiders against the Kangaroos, especially after the results in Newcastle, Perth and Coventry this year.

Australia were dominant in all

three of those matches.

But the Kiwis thrive on underdog status – they haven’t handled the world No 1 ranking well – and have a tradition of peaking at the end of tournaments.

They did that at the 2008 World Cup, when they reversed a 30-6 loss to the Kangaroos in the pool stage to an astounding 34-20 win in the final.

There was the same recipe in 2010.

A comprehensive defeat in the group stages to Australia was followed by an-against-the-odds 16-12 win in the final.

That, however tenuous it might seem, is something to cling on to.

Merrick sets Nix a new A League challenge Wellington coach Ernie Merrick is refusing to get carried away with their first set of backto-back wins in over a year, and challenged his team to make it three next week.

A five-star performance from Roy Krishna inspired the Phoenix to a dominant 2-0 win over Central Coast on Saturday to claim successive victories for the first time since October 2015.

Merrick was full of praise for Krishna, who netted his fourth goal in three games, but was just as ecstatic with players deputising for five regulars away on international duty.

Now Merrick has urged his men to keep gathering momentum in the A-League, although they’ll have to do it against a Melbourne Victory side that fired six past them three weeks ago.

“I thought that was a very important game for us to win. I thought it was a terrific occasion, Remembrance Day, and coming over here to Canberra,” Merrick said.

“But I feel as though we need to go on a run of more than two, so we’ve got to keep it in perspective.

Surprise retirement Miesha Tate has announced her retirement inside the octagon following a loss to Raquel Pennington at UFC 205. The 30-year-old Tate says the loss played a role in her decision.

She says: “I had a lot more to give but I couldn’t pull it out of myself.”

Tate defeated Holly Holm in March to win the bantamweight title and then lost the belt in her first title defense to Amanda Nunes in July. Tate (18-7) had coached Pennington on “The Ultimate Fighter,” a reality show used by the UFC to recruit new talent.

The sisters fought out a desperate finish in the Christchurch Casino-sponsored marathon with the older sibling gaining the upper hand on the line aboard Pump Up The Volume by half a head.

Manning, the genuine son of Savabeel came wide on the home turn and he finished doggedly to take the major prize from Myers’ mount Perfect Start.

“He got a bit lost out there on his own and I thought Rosie may have nabbed me,” McCulloch said.

“The key to these two mile races is to put them to sleep and he had no trouble. He’s a great horse and a pleasure to ride.”

Pump Up The Volume relaxed well toward the back of the field before improving 800 metres from home when the well-supported Nymph Monte also made his move.

“I got on the back of the favourite and I knew I was going better than him,” McCulloch said.

It was the 33-year-old’s third Cup victory having won aboard Hoorang in 2008 and with Mungo Jerry in 2014.

Perfect Start also settled at the tail-end but, unlike her sister, Myers came between runners on the Wayne Hillis-trained outsider and that nearly proved a winning move for the 29-year-old.

Imperium ran on gallantly to take third money from Gentil Tonton and the hot-pot Nymph Monte was next home.

He was under pressure before the turn and boxed on well on a track wetter than he prefers.

Weight of expectation at Riccarton didn’t faze Racha Cuneen, who successfully rose to the biggest challenge of his career on Saturday.

The 24-year-old was entrusted with the ride on the Gr.1 gavelhouse.com NZ 1000 Guineas favourite La Diosa and he repaid the confidence showed in him with a faultless display to guide the southern filly to victory.

“She’s an amazing filly and I’m very grateful to be given the opportunity by Mandy and Matt Brown and the connections,” Cuneen said.

Cuneen had ridden La Diosa in her three previous starts, including Listed wins in the Canterbury Belle Stakes and the Barneswood Farm Stakes and he gave another polished display aboard the daughter of the New Zealandbred multiple Group One winner So You Think.

La Diosa settled in the final pairing before she scouted wide near the turn and then finished relentlessly for the fourth win of her six start career.

“The plan was always to get back and run over the top of them,” Cuneen said.

“We hit the front early and she got a bit lost, but all credit to the filly – she’s a great horse.”

The filly not only provided Cuneen with his first Group One winner, but also her Canterbury trainers who weren’t altogether sure how La Diosa would cope with the Dead 4 track.

“We didn’t know how she would handle it,” Matt Brown said. “She had to be good to win and she is very good, she just likes to get back and relax. Racha hasn’t done anything wrong on her and he rode her brilliantly.”

La Diosa won by a length and a half from Bella Gioia with Sweepstake third ahead of Midnight Gossip.

In the money Manchester United have the highest wages in world football according to a global survey, with the first-team squad earning NZ$10.22 million a year basic salary on average.

The survey considers the pay of almost 10,000 sportsmen at 333 teams in seven sports across 17 of the world’s richest leagues.

NBA basketball teams en masse have soared up this rich list due to Brexit’s effect on the dollar and a new TV deal, and two of the world’s richest three teams in terms of salary are now NBA teams, and the third is a baseball team, the New York Yankees.

But the Premier League remains by far the best-paid football league on the planet.

Average basic first-team pay in England’s top division is $4,318,647, or $86,373 a week.

That is close to double the average wage in La Liga, which is just more than $2.1m per player per year, or $43,900 a week.

And United are now the fourth best-paid team in world sport and the best-paid football team in the world, man for man.

The global sports salary survey found the average first-team wage at Old Trafford equates to basic pay of $196,534 a week.

The acquisition of world-record signing Paul Pogba and high-earner Zlatan Ibrahimovic have propelled them up the list.

Barcelona, home to Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez, are the second bestpaid football team and fifth across all teams, averaging $9.92m per player a year, or $193,059 a week, while Manchester City are third ($9.56m per year, $184,203 per week), and ranked No 9 in the world.

Real Madrid are the fourth best-paid football team, the No 19 team across all sport.

The Premier League’s financial strength in depth is mightier than ever thanks to new TV deals now in force for the 2016-19 seasons, when Sky and BT Sport will pay $9 billion between them for domestic live rights.

Foreign broadcasters will pay $5.3 billion for overseas rights collectively, and Match of the Day and other programmes will contribute hundreds of millions more.

Support for Strachan Leigh Griffiths insists changing the manager is not the answer to Scotland’s problems.

Sport Throw away the toss New Zealand coach Mike Hesson has joined the growing calls for test cricket to do away with the toss.

The numbers on how infrequently teams win test matches away from home are a compelling argument to trial a plan whereby the visiting team is given the choice of batting or bowling first. The idea is to prevent the more extreme examples of pitches being tailored to suit the home side, whether that be on the subcontinent or in Western countries.

Lowry Cup brings out our best bowlers Teams from around the area came together yesterday to compete in the qualifying round of the Lowry Cup for lawn bowls.

The Lowry Cup is a Mid Canterbury-based competition that

involves clubs from Ashburton, Hampstead, Allenton, Methven, Hinds and Rakaia.

The winning teams will progress onto the final round next Sunday to contest the Lowry Cup.

The competition will be held at the Methven Bowls Club and the games will be knockout, meaning if a team loses they are immediately disqualified from the competition.

The qualifying round for the women’s centre triples competition was also played in Ashburton and Rangiora yesterday however, no teams from Ashburton were involved.

Caroline Garcia stunned Petra Kvitova 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 as France levelled the Fed Cup final 1-1 against champions Czech Republic after Karolina Pliskova won an epic first singles earlier yesterday. Garcia produced an aggressive performance to down dual Wimbledon champion Kvitova.

Ruiz a formidable opponent
