Residents’ satisfaction with the performance of their mayor and district councillors has slumped from a high of 94 per cent in 2011 to just 69 per cent this year.

The black mark was delivered in the council’s annual residents’ survey that measured council’s performance across 44 categories and for many of those, satisfaction rankings were well down on last year. A total of 500 residents were surveyed.

mayor and councillors was around decision making, where 40 per cent rated this as poor, while 27 per cent said elected members were serving their own agenda or business interests and 16 per cent said they did not listen to the community.

Satisfaction with the performance of council staff, however remained high at 86 per cent.

In terms of the information the council provided to residents over the past year, 82 per cent said they were satisfied with the quantity of information provided. Newspapers remained the number

one source of information, 76 per cent, followed by Facebook on 15 per cent.

Ten per cent of those surveyed got their information from the council’s website.

While there was plenty of bad news in the survey, there were some highlights and residents had a satisfaction rating of 89 per cent for their contact with the council.

Scammers doing the rounds

Councillors’ performance rating takes a tumble

Police are advising locals to exercise caution when taking calls.

A scam is doing the rounds in which cellphone users receive automated calls in a Chinese accent, claiming to be from DHL. Ashburton residents are among those who have reported receiving such calls, predominantly on cellphones.

An automated recording tells the phone user that DHL has goods waiting for them and that they need to press 9 to talk to somebody to discuss, Police Senior Sergeant Charles Ip said.

However, if they press 9 the call then goes to a person who will ask for personal information.

“These calls follow a spate of similar scam calls reported around November last year pretending to be from the Chinese Embassy, in which people were called by a number, seemingly identical to that of the Embassy, and asked to provide personal information,” he said.

Those who believe they on the receiving end of a scam call are advised to hang up immediately.

Police advised “if it doesn’t seem right, be cautious, doublecheck details first”.

“Look after your personal details in the same way you would your wallet and other possessions. Your personal details are very valuable to scammers, they will use your details to take out loans or run up debts if they can.”

Meanwhile, in Christchurch, two individuals have reported receiving “awful, intimidating” scam calls from a person claiming to be from a gang.

The caller told one man he owed a significant sum of money and demanded it was transferred to his bank account.

The man protested, and the caller proceeded to make threats

involving his family and children.

Last month, the NZ Telecommunications Forum said they will be adopting a tougher stance on repeated scam callers.

The organisation has drafted a Scam Calling Prevention Code for public consultation, with the finalised code expected to be in force in July.

Scams reported to the Consumer Protection’s Scamwatch website can also help prevent further people being scammed, said police. Police also suggested visiting the Netsafe website as a helpful source of advice and information.

■ MOTHER’S DAY FUN RUN/WALK

Getting active to help fight heart disease More than 200 women laced up their running shoes and got involved in the 2018 Jennian Homes Mother’s Day Fun Run/ Walk yesterday morning at Ashburton Domain – one of 32 locations across New Zealand.

Close to 10,000 participants walked and ran 5km courses nationwide, with this year’s leading event numbers being at Paihia (1200), Tauranga (700), Christchurch (600) and Nelson (600).

It was fantastic to see so many people in Ashburton, and across the country, come together to show support for the women they love, Jennian Homes chief operating officer Aidan Jury said.

“Heart disease is the numberone cause of death for women in New Zealand, claiming the lives of more than 55 women each week,” Jury said.

“It’s extra special to see men embrace the event and support the women in their lives – cheering them on from the sidelines or even lacing up their running shoes and joining in.

The most significant positives came in the wake of the introduction of wheelie bins. Satisfaction with kerbside rubbish and recycling collection was up 16 per cent.

Green waste bins, however, were on the wish list for 35 per cent of those surveyed.

When it came to where the council spent its money, 70 per cent of respondents were satisfied, but 30 per cent thought they should spend more on roads and 12 per cent said spend more on the EA Networks Centre.

There was a call by 15 per cent for less money to be spent on the art gallery and by 11 per cent for less money on the museum.

Possibly on the back of the closure of the Ashburton i-SITE, tourism promotion received an all-time low mark at 53 per cent satisfaction, down from 91 per cent last year.

The council’s spending on roads didn’t please many with satisfaction with sealed roads dropping to an all-time low, 43 per cent, down from 76 per cent in 2010. Potholes, at 68 per cent, were the single biggest issue.

Unsealed roads fared better, at 55 per cent satisfaction with potholes, infrequent grading and poor quality roads the biggest concerns.

As a place to live, 97 per cent said the district was great, with 40 per cent saying it had improved over the past three years.

Respondents gave the council’s community consultation an all-time high mark of 75 per cent satisfaction.

Councillors had their first look at the damning survey results over the weekend and they will be discussed at Thursday’s council meeting.

Dedication to tennis rewarded

It’s not often Phil Crozier is lost for words, but on Friday night he was rendered speechless.

As he got up on the stage at the 2018 Mid Canterbury Sports Awards to accept the Robilliard Trophy for outstanding service to sport after years of involvement with Mid Canterbury Tennis, the tears that had sprung to his eyes when he realised that was the reason why everyone had been so eager that he attended, spilled over.

When he was first told he had to go the awards, the 70-year-old wondered if they wanted him to be the mascot for the Mid Canterbury Tennis Browning Shield team, which was nominated in the senior sports team category.

He had to leave home at 2am on Saturday to catch a flight to Australia for a two-week tennis tour he had organised, so wasn’t sure a night out was a good idea.

But he went, and was surprised when he arrived to see his whole family there but didn’t think much more of it until James Cochrane started reading the citation for the Robilliard Trophy winner and he heard the words ‘tennis’ and ‘Chertsey’.

As Cochrane recited the many pages that were needed to sum up Crozier’s work, the man of the moment had to dig out a tissue to wipe his eyes. An emotional Crozier later told the 200-strong crowd that some of them may not have known, but he lost his son Duncan to cancer four years ago.

The pair were both also heavily involved with scouts and since his son’s death, Crozier had begun running an annual summer camp, something that had always been a dream of Duncan’s.

Between scouts, tennis, his love for running, his family, and a career running his turkey farm, Crozier had always been busy. He liked it that way, and everything he did, he did for the love of it.

Crozier hadn’t always played tennis.

He began at a young age at Chertsey, but gave the sport away

for a fair few years, he was just too busy.

“It wasn’t until the 1990s someone asked me to play number one for Fairton. I was honoured but said I hadn’t played for a few years.

I still had a wooden racket,” Crozier said.

He was beaten comfortably in his comeback match and someone suggested maybe it was time to upgrade his racket.

“I told them there was nothing wrong with the racket when I last used it, it’s just me,” Crozier said.

But, he’d caught the tennis bug again so brought himself a new Emrik racket and starting playing more regularly, and soon found himself heavily involved in the administrative side of the sport.

Along with Jack Allan and Reg Donaldson, Crozier became a driving force in the development of the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre, which opened in 2000.

The new, 16 plexipave court complex replaced the old grass courts on Oak Grove, and the old wooden pavilion made way for a big, new pavilion with a full kitchen and bar facility, which Crozier made his own.

From day one, Crozier had been chief barman. During the summer Mid Canterbury Tennis held a popular Sunset Doubles competition on a Thursday night, which Crozier played in then headed straight for the bar to serve up post-match beverages. He loved it.

He was proud of the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre he had a hand in creating and was glad they did it right. Initially they were only going to do four plexipave courts at the front and keep the rest grass.

Then they thought they’d do eight plexipave courts.

“Then Reg said I’m not going to keep mowing the lawn out the back if everyone is going to be playing out the front, and then Jack said why don’t we just do the lot,” Crozier said.

“And within a year from the time we dug up the grass, we were playing on them.”

At 70, Crozier said he was playing in more tournaments now than he ever had, recently winning a Canterbury doubles title.

A couple of years ago he got out

of the business that had kept him busy his whole life – Crozier’s Turkeys – so had more time to give, and to play, so he was making the most of it.

“I was 100 per cent turkeys when I was younger and didn’t have time for tennis. I probably played occasionally to make up a team if I wasn’t too busy,” Crozier said.

He was still filling gaps in teams,

but not always with himself. Crozier was famous in tennis circles for his long list of names and phone numbers.

If there was someone in Mid Canterbury who was pretty handy with a tennis racket, chances were they’d be on Crozier’s list and could get a call if a team was short of a player.

Most of them at some point probably have.

On-line voting a possibility

When the option to trial on-line voting for local body elections was offered, Ashburton said no.

That was four years ago, but come election day 2019 the district could be lining up alongside the rest of New Zealand in offering voters that on-line option.

The Electoral Matters Bill is currently having its first reading in Parliament. Its single broad policy is to provide greater flexibility to enable local electoral arrangements to adapt to changing circumstances. That policy was developed in response to local

government requests for an online voting trial.

This was initially planned for the October 2016 election with eight councils – Selwyn, Wellington, Porirua, Masterton, Rotorua, Matamata Piako, Palmerston North and Whanganui opting to be the new system’s guinea pigs.

Christchurch and Dunedin considered taking part in the trial but declined because of the security risk and the costs involved.

The Ashburton District Council decided in 2014 it would not be part of that trial. At the time, chief executive Andrew Dalziel said there would be too many

issues to iron out and costs to cover for councils taking part in that trial. Most of those issues were expected to be around voter security. At the time Dalziel said it was inevitable on-line voting would become an option for local body elections but the process would have to be watertight.

Mayor Donna Favel believes that on-line voting will be a useful tool at the next election because of the high internet useage in New Zealand (92 per cent of Kiwis are on-line).

There could be some pitfalls, however, she said around the need for education and engage-

ment and some resistance from non-techno voters.

“I do support the use of technology, we have smart systems and smart people and we need to go down the path of smart voting,” she said.

One of the reasons behind introducing the on-line option is to improve the traditionally low number of people choosing to vote in local body elections.

Ashburton had one of the highest voter returns in New Zealand in the last local body election, 53.21 per cent.

Nationally the 2016 voter return was 39.5 per cent.

Rural artists make their mark on Methven

Step inside the Methven Mt Hutt Memorial Hall this month and you’ll be greeted with enchanting vistas from North Canterbury’s present and past.

Rural artists Ray Erridge and Anne Filshie, hailing from Woodend, have opened a new exhibition at the hall.

Erridge, an accomplished digital artist, grew up in Christchurch in the 1940s and spent several years dwelling in Methven among other locations in the South Island.

Majestic Clydesdale horses dominate many of his works.

“Back in the day we used to have them around the district,” he explained.

“They were used for the street cleaning, and working around the breweries.”

Nowadays, he said he brings a camera along to ploughing events then spends painstaking hours recreating his photos as digital illustrations.

For Filshie, an award-winning painter with a penchant for acrylics, it’s the golden hues of late summer where she finds most inspiration.

Growing up in rural Woodend, she said she used to walk for miles admiring the scenery and recreating it in sketches.

“I’d go to different areas and look at the poplar trees, the macrocarpa trees with their beautiful shapes, and I’d draw them.”

She began painting and travelling further

Police are investigating after a woman was found stabbed in her home in Napier. The victim, in her mid-20s, was found by a member of the public walking past a property on Kelvin Road, in Maraenui, about 2pm on Saturday.

Authorities were alerted to the incident when a member of the public walking past the victim’s house heard her cries for help. She had suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital, where she has since undergone surgery.

$18m richer The manager of an Auckland Lotto store where an $18 million ticket was sold is describing the news as “unreal”. The $18 million Powerball ticket was bought at Paper Plus in Remuera, which has only been a Lotto retailer for a few months.

The winning ticket was made up of $18 million from Powerball First Division and $333,333 from Lotto First Division. Manager Scott McLanachan said he had “absolutely no idea” who the winner was. He had heard that the big winner had bought their ticket at his store, but that was as far as his knowledge went.

Today, Filshie’s works feature weatherbeaten farm equipment and gnarled logs juxtaposed with nimble birdlife and dazzling natural backdrops.

She is also a life member of the Rangiora Art Society and has received a number of awards for her works.

It’ll soon be easier to shop guiltfree as Countdown moves to introduce New Zealand’s first plastic-free aisle. The supermarket chain is looking to follow the lead of a chain in the Netherlands, Ekoplaza, which opened its first plastic-free supermarket aisle in February. Dutch shoppers can now wander down the aisle and choose from 700 products in compostable packaging, including meat, rice, sauces, dairy, chocolate, cereals, yogurt, snacks, fresh fruit and vegetables. Countdown’s general manager of corporate affairs, Kiri Hannifin, told the Herald on Sunday she wanted to introduce it to the Ponsonby store.

Lagmhor School celebrates long history

Plenty of old friendships were renewed during Lagmhor School’s centenary celebrations, held over the weekend.

Organising committee member Jarrod Ross said close to 200 people attended and it seemed everyone enjoyed catching up with farmer school mates.

“Personally, I got talking to some I hadn’t seen for about 25 years,” Ross said.

Close to 200 people took part in the celebrations, with past pupils coming in from places as far afield as Ballarat and Brisbane, Auckland, Wellington Dunedin and Oamaru.

There were also a good number of locals in attendance.

The oldest person there was Janet Woods, now in her 90s, whose connection to the school goes back to the 1930s, Ross said.

There were others there who attended the school in the 1940s but Ross said the age range that attracted the greatest representation was 50 to 70-year-olds.

Proceedings began on Friday night with an informal meet and greet at Hotel Ashburton.

Then the following day everyone met at the school for speeches, before the unveiling of a sculpture, created by Ashburton artist Brent Holley in Timaru blue stone (basalt).

Ross said Lagmhor School is known for a couple of acorn trees and the plaque with the sculpture noted that “From little acorns mighty oaks grow”.

Commemorative trees were also planted before participants enjoyed lunch at the school, which was followed by decade photos.

On Saturday evening it was back to Hotel Ashburton for dinner and music, which also included a speech by former principal Phil Harding on his experiences at Lagmhor.

The final event was a service at Lagmhor Church yesterday.

All those who registered for the celebrations also received a special school centenary booklet.

Ross said the weekend was a great success.

“There’s something special about being associated with a little country school, where you get to know everyone. I think we’re lucky because there’s not a great deal of them left anymore.”

New retreat room created

into a quiet retreat.

“It had become more and more apparent we needed somewhere that was private for people. Sometimes simply walking in here is a catalyst for people to let go and they need somewhere they can go, somewhere that’s private,” Bonifant said.

The new facility meant the society had future-proofed the building as numbers using its services were growing and with that growth the range of needs was increasing, she said.

Currently there are 170 people accessing the centre’s services.

Initial contact often involved a home visit, but services are also provided from the centre.

Clients come through referrals from the medical profession but can also come from families or from the person with cancer.

The society does initiate contact and that means if a person is not referred then they miss out on the range of support services offered, she said.

The support team from Ashburton’s Cancer Society often becomes a lifeline for people dealing with a cancer diagnosis, says community liaison officer Annie Bonifant.

And often those people most in need of support simply walk through the doors in the society’s Mackenzie Centre rooms in quite a distressed state. Their greatest need is a quiet space where they can talk and where the range of support options can be laid out for them, she said.

Until now, the centre has been very short on private space. Its offices and open areas are great for meetings and socialising, but for people wanting privacy, spaces were few.

Thanks to financial support from the Advance Ashburton Foundation, the Mackenzie Foundation and from the society itself, an unused toilet area and sluice room has now been turned

Set to celebrate 75 years

Methven Theatre Company is set to celebrate 75 years of performance with a special production this year.

Auditions will soon be under way soon for the production, which has the working title of Encore.

Long-time company member Marya Trengrove is in the process of writing the show, and she will also direct it, alongside Kate Lambarth as musical director.

Trengrove has directed shows for the company in the past,

with the last being Stiff about 10 years ago. The company was formerly the Methven Choral Society, when many of its shows were musical productions.

Trengrove said this year’s show would present a new challenge, and it was likely to involve live recreations of songs and scenes from previous shows, combined with old video footage.

“At the moment we are going through the archives. With all the different shows, all the different people, you just don’t know who’s out there,” she said.

She had come across people

who had been involved in shows from long ago and wanted to hear from others who may wish to contribute in any way.

“It’s always been a very homegrown community-orientated theatre company, and there’s so much talent as well,” Trengrove said.

“The idea is for everyone to be involved, young to old, as a commemoation of the hall, the stage, the people.”

The Methven Theatre Company has been working hard to get a series of invites out to people within the community who have

played a huge role in the success of both the Choral Society and the Theatre Company to be interviewed for the video clips shown during the show and on June 10 will be gathering all those people together to capture the footage.

On that day as well will be the initial get together of anyone interested in performing in the show with the Theatre Company holding an open meeting, without auditions in the desire to have as many people involved in the show as is possible.

The production will stage in late September.

Boasting both home-grown talent and stars from afar, Mamma Mia! is set to wow the crowds from next week.

The Variety Theatre Ashburton musical directed by Roger Farr will celebrate 10 years of the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

Today we introduce the actors playing the parts of Sophie’s fiancé and two best friends.

Twenty-three-year-old muso and builder Luke Glendining will take on the role of Sophie’s athletic, alluring fiancé Sky. Since the age of 15, Glendining has made his mark on the Variety Theatre in shows including Joseph, Miss Saigon, Chicago and Grease. He is also a regular solo acoustic artist in local bars like Speights Ale House, and said he has “enjoyed being involved with Mamma Mia after a couple of busy years away from the Variety Theatre stage”.

Fresh to Variety Theatre and performing as the kooky character of Lisa is Murran Buller, a local girl with a knack for writing.

And impulsive, fun Ali will be played by Methven-based teacher Michaela George, who brings in experience in choreography and performance from a number of shows including three others for Variety Theatre.

Big Budget week for government I

t’s set to be a big week for the coalition government, with Finance Minister Grant Robertson to deliver his first budget on Thursday.

These days the Budget announcement isn’t what it was in the past, with surprises usually few and far between. Instead, funding decisions are signposted sometimes up to months in advance, with the big day reserved for either confirmation or fleshing out a few more details.

Governments also utilise “minibudgets” like Robertson did in December, to drip-feed plans, which again keep surprises to a minimum. It’s got to the stage that recent finance ministers seem to have taken pride in their budgets being labelled as boring.

That’s unlikely to change, with Robertson’s speech to the Wellington Chamber of Commerce

last week setting a pretty clear direction.

He told that audience that infrastructure and public services will be the big winners, with an investment of $42 billion in capital net spending over the next five years. From that you can read that the big ticket items will be in the areas of health, education and transport.

Robertson’s on-record as saying hospitals need a “long overdue boost” to ensure they’re fit for purpose, while he’s also said schools need significant investment to deal with ageing buildings and

increasing enrolments.

How much substance you give the government’s view that the increased spending is necessary because the previous administration let infrastructure run down will more than likely be determined by which side of the political fence you sit on.

However, I think it is fair to say that Robertson’s task has not been made any easier but what can only be seen as pay-offs for the support of coalition partner New Zealand First. The most obvious of these was last week’s announcement of significant increased investment in New Zealand’s Foreign Service, along with aid into the Pacific.

In case you missed it, Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters announced that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade will receive an operational expenditure increase of $150.4

million over the next four years, and an additional $40.3 million in capital expenditure. Funding will allow for an additional 50 foreign policy positions and the reopening of an embassy in Stockholm, Sweden. He justified the spending increase by saying it will enable the ministry to rebuild the resources it needs to ensure it can adequately engage with the world and advance our interests.

On top of that Budget 2018 will deliver $714.2 million in additional operating funding over the next four years to expand New Zealand’s Official Development Assistance, primarily towards the Pacific region.

It wasn’t mentioned by Peters just how much the new policy is a response to increased spending in the Pacific by China in recent years, leading to fears of increased Chinese influence in the region at

the expense of our own.

I don’t have a problem with foreign aid but I can see the argument that charity begins at home gaining a fair bit of traction in coming months, particularly if stories about families struggling with housing, health, feeding themselves and keeping warm play out this winter.

If that occurs then critics will be able to point to backtracking on election campaign promises like cutting doctors’ fees by $10 for low income earners, or a delay in plans to give pensioners a bit extra to help them heat their homes this winter.

Justifying those decisions by saying there’s not enough money in the pot will not sit well with what’s likely to be a fair chunk of the population who will question why priority has instead been given to reopening an embassy in Sweden.

uring last year’s election campaign National announced that we intended to cap the cost of GP visits at $18 for New Zealanders on low incomes.

This was the next step in our plan to make healthcare more accessible following on from our introduction of free GP visits for children under 13.

Meanwhile the Labour Party also promised that they would reduce GP fees from July 1 this year if they were in government.

The then Leader of the Opposition Jacinda Ardern stated that Labour would reduce doctors’ fees by $10 a visit and that half of all New Zealanders would have free visits or fees of less than $8.

Unfortunately, however, Health Minister David Clark has indicated that Labour’s commitment to reduce GP fees by this amount will not occur on July 1 this year as promised, despite Labour having allocated more than $1 billion in their Fiscal

While we will have to wait until the details of the Budget are revealed to find out exactly what, if any, reduction in fees is planned this year, it is becoming obvious that the Government has considerably over-promised.

As a result the Government is now having to backtrack rapidly on its campaign pledges in order to pay for other rushed and unnecessary policies such as free tertiary education.

And of course there are also the demands of New Zealand First to pay for such as the $1 billion Provincial Growth Fund.

Despite the costs of the coalition deal, the Government

does actually have a significant amount of money to play with as they are intending to borrow $10 billion more than National planned to.

Furthermore, they have approximately half a billion in additional revenue coming in than was forecast last year at election time. So they have room for the things they want to prioritise, but what they’re really saying to New Zealanders is that cheaper GP visits are not high enough up that list.

Another recent example of the Government’s trail of broken promises is Police Minister Stuart Nash’s admission that Labour’s pledge to put an extra 1800 cops on the beat will be downsized to 1100.

All along, the Government has said that it would be adding 1800 cops over three years. In November last year, Stuart Nash confirmed that all 1800 would be sworn frontline officers.

Just recently, however, the

Police Minister stated that only about 1100 of these extra cops would be frontline officers and around 250 would be nonsworn, ‘authorised’ officers.

Furthermore he admitted that this “hasn’t been completely decided” which is an alarming admission in itself.

So far every extra cop on the beat since the election has come from National’s 2017 Safer Communities package which is adding 885 frontline officers over four years.

New Zealanders will rightly be feeling let down and disappointed that this Government is failing to follow through on some of its most significant promises.

Murder probe continues The family of seven people killed in a suspected murder-suicide in rural Western Australia are grappling with how the tragedy happened, as detectives and forensic experts embark on the third day of their investigation.

Police believe Forever Dreaming Farm owners Peter and Cynda Miles, aged 61 and 58, are among the dead at the Osmington property, northeast of Margaret River.

The others are believed to be their 35-year-old daughter Katrina Miles and her four children – daughter Taye, 13, and sons Rylan, 12, Arye, 10, and Kadyn Cockman, eight.

All of the deceased, who are yet to be formally identified, were shot by firearms licensed to Mr Miles.

In a statement, family members said they were devastated.

“We are stunned and still trying to understand how this could happen,” they said.

“We respectfully ask that the community refrain from speculating on the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.”

Others have remembered the deceased as “lovely people” who were “deeply connected” to their community.

Cynda ran her own business called Cynda’s Soft Salvage, and her social media profile shows she loved op-shopping and sustainability, referring to herself as a “waste warrior”.

“I love fabric and buttons and brown paper, and I really don’t like waste, so here is my little business creating useful and pretty stuff to help you navigate life without plastic and a whole lot more,” she wrote on Facebook.

Days before her death, Cynda posted about making boomerang bags and had also previously posted about Mother’s Day. Augusta-Margaret River shire president Pamela Townshend said Cynda “had a deep commitment to the environment and she’ll be so sadly missed.”

Katrina’s Facebook page lists her employment as “parent of four beautiful children”.

There are unconfirmed reports her children had autism.

According to a Gumtree advertisement posted on Wednesday, Mr Miles was looking for “vineyard and farm work” in the area.

WA Police Commissioner Chris Dawson said a two-minute emergency phone call was made at 5.15am on Friday from the property, and local police arrived shortly after 6am.

He said police knew whose phone the call was made from, but would not confirm whether it was Mr Miles.

Mr Dawson also clarified that only one body was found outside, while one woman was located inside the main house, and another woman and four children were discovered inside a converted shed.

The examination of the crime scene is expected to take several days.

Exit forced Lindsey Buckingham has described his departure from Fleetwood Mac as “not my doing or my choice”. The band announced in April that they would tour without the musician, who wrote and sang on some of their biggest hits, including Go Your Own Way and Tusk.

Buckingham had been a member since he joined the group in 1974 with his thengirlfriend Stevie Nicks. The group will tour this autumn with Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers’ guitarist Mike Campbell and Crowded House frontman Neil Finn.

Eight dead Terror knife attack in Paris in three bombings Three attacks, including one by a suicide bomber disguised as a churchgoer, targeted three churches in Indonesia’s second largest city of Surabaya, killing at least eight people and wounding dozens.

The series of attacks yesterday were carried out by the Islamic state-inspired group Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), a spokesman for the country’s intelligence agency said.

Wawan Purwanto, communication director at the agency, also told Metro TV that the attacks were likely to be linked to a deadly prison hostage incident at a jail near Jakarta involving Islamist militants last week. Asked who he thought were the brains behind the attacks, Purwano said: “Still the old group, JAD, who has planned this for sometime.”

“They had planned to attack police targets on May 11 but because the police were prepared, they picked alternative targets,” he told Metro TV. The first attack struck during Sunday Mass at the Santa Maria Catholic Church, killing four people, including the suspected bomber, police spokesman Frans Barung Mangera told reporters at the scene. He said police officers were among a total of 38 wounded. It was followed by a second explosion minutes later at the Christian Church of Diponegoro that killed two people. Another two died in a third attack at the city’s Pantekosta Church, Mangera said.

The latest attacks in predominantly Muslim Indonesia came days after police ended a riot and hostage-taking at a detention center near Jakarta.

A knife attack in central Paris has left one person dead and another four injured.

A knife-wielding assailant killed a 29-year-old man and injured four others in a lively neighbourhood near Paris’ famed Opera Garnier before he was killed by police.

The Islamic State group claimed the attacker as one of its “soldiers”.

Counterterrorism authorities took charge of the investigation, and President Emmanuel Macron vowed that France would not bow to extremists despite being the target of multiple deadly attacks in recent years.

Paris police officers evacuated people from some buildings in the Right Bank neighbourhood after the attack, which happened on rue Monsigny at about 9pm on Saturday. Bar patrons and opera-goers described surprise and confusion in the immediate area.

Beyond the police cordon, however, crowds still filled nearby cafes and the city’s night life resumed its normal pace soon after the attack.

Marriage approved Buckingham Palace has released an image of the handwritten document in which the Queen gives her consent to Prince Harry to marry American Meghan Markle. The Instrument of Consent image was released at the weekend – a week before Prince Harry is to marry the US actress in St George’s Chapel in Windsor.

26 killed in ‘terrorist’ attack Twenty-six people were killed and seven others wounded in an attack by an unidentified “terrorist group” in rural Burundi, the African country’s security minister.

The weekend attack came shortly before Burundians vote on May 17 in a controversial referendum that could extend the president’s term. It was not immediately clear if the attack was related, although some activists said they believe it was.

Some reports claim the group had crossed from the Democratic Republic of Congo into Cibitoke province.

Speaking at the scene, Security Minister Alain Guillaume Bunyoni said 24 people were killed in their homes Friday night and

two others died of their wounds at a local hospital. He gave no further details about the attack in Ruhagarika community in the northwestern province of Cibitoke.

One survivor said the attackers came around 10pm and “attacked households and set fire on houses”. Some victims were hacked with machetes and others were shot or burned alive, she said.

Her husband and two children were killed, she said. She spoke on condition of anonymity, citing safety concerns.

A police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said four of the families targeted were headed by people he called “police agents”.

5 ribs per person, depending on size 3 C water 397g char siu sauce (Chinese barbecue sauce) ¼ C sweet chilli sauce 2 T fresh ginger, grated 2 cloves garlic, sliced 1 T sesame seeds 1 t Chinese five spice ¼ Csoy sauce Zest of 1 orange ¼ C fresh orange juice 2 spring onions, for garnish

■ Increase oven temperature to 185ºC (165°C fan forced). Remove ribs from oven and drain, reserving half a cup of liquid, and arrange in a single layer on lined shallow roasting trays.

■ Whisk the ribs’ stock into the sauce mixture and brush gener-

ously over each rib. Cook for 2030 minutes, adding extra sauce once or twice until glazed and sticky.

hey were frisky, playful and shameless attention-seekers. Your typical teenagers.

A large pod of juvenile bottlenose dolphins turned on quite the show, as we purred through the Marlborough Sounds on a Beachcomber cruise boat.

The frolicking dolphins basked in the boat’s wake, before unleashing their acrobatic impulses, leaping out of the water and flying through the air like trained circus-performers.

Blissed-out seclusion and bountiful wildlife combine to make a day out in Queen Charlotte Sound an unrivalled experience, writes Mike Yardley.

Picton had dawned bright and brilliant. The glossy deep blue water surrounding Picton Marina, gleamed photo-shoot perfect.

In a town that I have previously accused of resting on its laurels, Picton seems to have really hit its straps as a premium destination.

The place was buzzing. I was joining a day trip into Queen Charlotte Sound with one of the region’s oldest tourist operators, Beachcomber Cruises, who offer myriad tours including their iconic rural post delivery service, The Magic Mail Run. Keen to combine cruising with

a spot of walking, my magical day out would whisk me to Ship Cove, before re-boarding the vessel for the home-run from Furneaux Lodge.

Departing from Picton, my ebullient skipper, Steve, peppered the cruise commentary with a feast of fascinating insights. Brimming with predatorfree islands and marine reserves, ogling precious wildlife is an undisputed magnet, luring the world to their crystal-clear waters. Steve remarked that alongside the Hector’s, Dusky and Bottlenose Dolphins, whales are a constant sight in the Sounds.

As are seals, stingrays and orcas.

We rendezvoused with some salmon farms, heavily fortified in perimeter fencing to stop the fur seals doing a drive-by feed.

A group of excited British visitors became particularly animated when Steve approached a rocky nook aflutter with King Shags – unique to the Marlborough Sounds. Steve mentioned their population is just 600. During Cook’s second visit to New Zealand in 1773, his crew caught one of these beautiful birds and took it home to England. As you do.

The sheer size of the Sounds is astonishing, comprising 20 per cent of New Zealand’s coastline, brimming with countless coves and secluded sandy bays. Thick native bush surrounds these an-

cient sunken valleys, where the calm, translucent water spans azure blue, vivid turquoise and shimmering emerald hues.

Throughout the 1770s, sheltered Ship Cove provided safe anchorage, food, water and timber for Captain Cook and his crew on five separate occasions, marking some of the earliest sustained contact between Maori and Europeans.

Disembarking from our boat, I dabbled in the creek where Cook made home brew for his crew before surveying the magnificent Captain Cook monument commemorating his repeat visits to the area. Remarkably, one of the original cannons from Endeavour, adorns the monument.

The cannon was salvaged from North Queensland, after the Endeavour ran aground on a reef and the crew had to throw numerous equipment overboard, to free the ship.

A gorgeous carved pou whenua (pole) was installed at Ship Cove 12 years ago, illustrating the legend of Kupe and the giant octopus he chased in these waters.

Lacing up my walking boots, I struck out for a taster of the Queen Charlotte Track. The full traverse from Ship Cove to Anakiwa is a three or four-day affair, but itching for a sample of this celebrated trek, I embarked on the first day’s section to Furneaux Lodge.

The 15km section starts with a steep, thigh-burning haul, climbing away from the beach, through regenerating native forest.

But after that initial gutbuster, the rest of the four-hour long trail was a breeze, with gentle undulations up and down panoramic ridgelines.

Gregariously chirping fantails, fluting tui calls and the limpid notes dropped by bellbirds were a constant avian soundtrack, as I threaded my way through forests of manuka, kanuka, tawa,tree ferns and beech.

The lookout point at Tawa Saddle serves up seraphic views across Queen Charlotte Sound, while more pixel-burning vantage points loom large as you descend into Resolution Bay. In the higher reaches of the track, the elevated views serve up mouth-watering glimpses of some of New Zealand’s most remote holiday homes, glorious little escape pads of supreme seclusion.

From Resolution bay, the final

stretch followed a well-graded old bridle path over a ridge and into Endeavour Inlet, threading along the shoreline.

An unexpected surprise was the short detour to ogle one of New Zealand’s largest and oldest trees. A 1000-year-old Rimu, in Howden Forest.

A viewing boardwalk was recently built around the tree to safeguard its ancient roots. What a stunning specimen it is. I toddled across the finish line with a flourish, sweetly surrendering to the laid-back hospitality embrace of Furneaux Lodge.

Built by the Howden family 110 years ago, the original homestead was thronging with thirsty patrons, chilling out and swapping tales, before boarding the boat at 5pm for the return run to Picton, as another pod of frisky dolphins shepherded us home.

Wakanui in a goal-fest

Wakanui has bounced back from a season to forget to finish second at the end of the first round of the 2018 Mid/South Canterbury senior men’s hockey competition.

They took on Cambridge in Ashburton Saturday and came away with a 5-3 win, but it didn’t come easy, with Cambridge bringing a style of hockey they weren’t used to which Wakanui had to adapt to, Wakanui captain Sam Moore said.

Moore said Wakanui was up 2-1 at half time and Cambridge came back strong in the second half.

“They equalised early in the second half and it was 3-all for a long time.

“Then in the last 10 minutes we got our fourth goal and they pulled their goalkeeper and then committed the cardinal sin of

giving away a penalty corner when they had no goal keeper with a couple of minutes to go,” Moore said.

Sam Bennett made them pay by putting the ball in the back of the goal, adding his name to the scoresheet along with Hayden Sinclair, Sam Harrison, Andrew Fisher and James Wright.

Wakanui finished at the bottom of the heap in 2017, so they were happy to start the new season so well, especially given it had been fragmented beginning with a game rained off and another one deferred due to the opening weekend of duck shooting.

Wakanui’s only loss so far this season was in the competition’s first round, at the hands of Temuka, who finished the first round unbeaten.

In the women’s competition, who finished on top would be decided tomorrow night when

Hampstead took on Cambridge in Timaru.

Cambridge was unbeaten up until now, while Hampstead had recorded wins and one draw, meaning whoever came out on top in that match would take out the first round and the first trophy on offer this season.

Hampstead head into the match off a resounding 10-0 win over Craighead on Saturday, but coach Rex Turnbull said Hampstead didn’t have it all their own way.

“The score flattered us to be fair.

“They played well at times and let in a few soft goals, but that’s not to take anything away from our girls, they did play well,” Turnbull said.

Georgia Clarke and Cindy Lowe both got hat-tricks, while Sam Dalziel scored two goals and Jenna Turnbull and Kim Campion got one each.

Turnbull said while it would be nice to get the win on Wednesday night and take the season’s first trophy, his side was taking the season game by game and their ultimate focus was on making the top four and the final at the end of the season.

Being a mid-week game, the Hampstead side wouldn’t be at full strength for the match due to some players being unavailable.

“We know it’s going to be tough but you always back yourself to win,” Turnbull said.

Mid Canterbury’s other senior women’s side Hampstead/Collegians were Cambridge’s opposition in Ashburton on Saturday, with Cambridge taking a 4-1 win.

But Hampstead/Collegians didn’t make it easy for them, holding them 1-all at half time before letting in three second half goals.

Manchester United gave Alexis Sanchez a contract that could earn him more than £25 million ($NZ48.6 million) a year should he hit all his bonuses, including £75,000 for every game he starts, according to the latest Football Leaks revelations.

The confidential contract information of a number of leading Premier League players has been published by the German magazine Der Spiegel in the book Football Leaks: Uncovering The Dirty Deals Behind the Beautiful Game, laying out the eye-watering terms for some of the big deals of the last two transfer windows.

Sanchez, who joined United from Arsenal in a deal in which Henrikh Mkhitaryan went the other way, is alleged to earn a basic salary of £391,000 a week with £75,000 paid as a bonus for every first-team game he starts.

The book’s allegations also allege that the 29-year-old, who has a five-year deal at United, is entitled to a £1.1 million annual signing-on fee. In addition, he could earn £2m for reaching a combination of 40 goals and assists; £1m if United win the Champions League and £500,000 for winning the Premier League.

The numbers reveal just what a strong position Sanchez put himself in by running his contract down to its final five months and insisting that his financial demands be met. Jose Mourinho has defended the player’s occasionally indifferent form, saying that he will be better next season.

Arsenal replaced him with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang whose contract details Der Spiegel also claim to have seen including a £2.26m Champions League bonus which he will allegedly receive despite Arsenal finishing sixth this season.

Aubameyang will earn £198,000 a week, totalling £10.3m annually, with a £15.15m loyalty bonus payable over the next three years.

He will earn £300,000 for getting a combined 25 goals and assists in a season and £50,000 for each match he starts that Arsenal win.

Mkhitaryan commanded less than those two but, despite failing to make the grade at United, he will earn £7.5m annually at Arsenal for three years and that will rise to £12.5m if the club decide to exercise an option to keep him.

By comparison, the season’s outstanding player, Mohamed Salah, seems to have been acquired relatively cheaply by Liverpool. He is on a weekly wage of £123,030 and has hit his £2.5m bonus target of 35 combined goals and assists.

Rugby’s Combined Country Cup has been blown wide open with the play-offs looming, after a round of upsets and draws on Saturday.

There were three draws all up in round nine, including a 17-all draw in the local derby between Rakaia and Methven at Rakaia, while Southern celebrated their club day and Eric Duff’s 50th game with an upset, handing Darfield only their second loss of the competition.

That win put Southern in outright fifth spot in section B with only two rounds to go until the finals, while Darfield was now in second place, with Prebbleton two points clear at the top of the table after being held to a surprise 26-all draw by Kaiapoi.

Southern coach Andrew Carr said his side knew they had to win everything from here on in if they were to stand a chance of

making the top four, and they’d had a change in attitude which shone through on Saturday.

Heading into the game with a skinny looking bench thanks to six players out with injury, Southern started strong and led 21-7 at half time, but Darfield battled their way back into contention.

“In the end we had to defend pretty hard for probably the last five minutes on our line, which showed great character,” Carr said.

Southern scored tries through Jon Dampney, Logan Bonnington, Alex Walker and Franco Catuogno.

Elsewhere in section B, competition newcomers Springston continued to shine in their inaugural season in the top division with a 20-17 win over Oxford which put them in third spot on the competition ladder, while Hornby picked up their first win of the competition, beating Hurunui 13-7.

Over in section A the big match up of the day between Waihora and Celtic resulted in a 28-17 win to the visiting Waihora side.

Waihora had only lost one game heading into the match and the win kept them in second place on the section A ladder.

Played at Celtic with consistent drizzle making ball handling difficult in the first half, Waihora struck first with a penalty before Celtic took the lead 7-3 with a well-worked converted try.

When Waihora’s Bronson Munro stuck out an arm and caught Nathan McCloy high, earning the Waihora fullback 10 minutes on the sideline, McCloy landed the resulting penalty to give his side a 10-3 lead at the break.

The weather improved in the second half, but so did Waihora.

After a yellow card reduced Celtic to 14 men early Waihora struck with a penalty, two tries and another penalty to take the lead 21-10.

McCloy went in under the posts late and converted to bring Celtic within four points, but Waihora put the pressure back on the desperate home side and earned a penalty try to finish the game.

With two rounds remaining, Saracens sit on top of the section A ladder after a 36-31 win over defending champions Southbridge.

Celtic is in third and Southbridge fourth.

Just one point back three teams – Glenmark-Cheviot, Lincoln and Burnham-Dunsandel-Irwell – were knocking on the door of the top four.

BDI had a big win on Saturday, 50-17 over West Melton, while Lincoln was just as good against Hampstead, winning 55-15.

Hampstead remained without a win at the bottom of the points table.

Ashley and Ohoka recorded the day’s other draw, 20-all.

Rolleston (section B) and Lincoln (section A) had the bye.

Chiefs scrap hard for the points in South Africa A try in the first half by Anton Lienert-Brown and a penalty try from a scrum in the second was enough for the Chiefs to win 15-9 and end the Stormers’ unbeaten run this season at home in Cape Town.

The fortunes of Australia’s Super Rugby teams slumped to a new low when the Queensland Reds were humiliated by the last-place Sunwolves 63-28 and the New South Wales Waratahs blew a 29-0 lead in losing to the Crusaders 3129 on Saturday.

The Sunwolves won their first match of the season after a hattrick of tries to winger Hosea Saumaki and a flawless kicking performance from flyhalf Hayden Parker, who landed 12 goals from 12 attempts and added a try for 36 individual points.

The lead changed hands three times in a first half which the Sunwolves finished 26-14 ahead.

Saumaki scored his hat-trick in the second half as the Sunwolves ran away with five tries, including a penalty try.

The Waratahs came close to ending a 38-match losing streak

by Australian teams against New Zealand opponents when they raced to 29-0 over defending champions the Crusaders after 27 minutes.

The Crusaders kicked away too much ball and the Waratahs took advantage, running in tries to Cam Clark, Taqele Naiyaravoro, Israel Folau and Curtis Rona.

Folau played a major role with his ability to win the ball in the air and to draw defenders before passing.

But the Crusaders stayed calm and chipped away at the Waratahs’ lead, making use of their almost test-strength forward pack.

The Crusaders scored tries through hooker Codie Taylor and winger Seta Tamanivalu to cut the lead to 29-19 at halftime, then narrowed the margin to five points with a try to winger Braydon Ennor.

They finally took the lead with a penalty try from a series of scrum infringements, edging ahead for the first time in the match with Richie Mo’unga’s conversion.

Waratahs flyhalf Bernard Foley missed two crucial penalties in the second half and a late attacking move ended with a knock-on.

“I don’t know where we were in that first 20 or 25 minutes,” Crusaders captain Sam Whitelock said.

“But full credit to the boys, we were nice and calm out there the whole time even though we were down 29 points.”

The Lions, beaten finalists the last two seasons, lost a third straight game on tour by losing to the Highlanders 39-27 in a thrilling match at Dunedin. The Highlanders led 14-0 early with tries to Lima Sopoaga and Liam Coltman but the Lions rallied and had cut the lead to 19-15 at halftime.

The Lions kept up steady pressure throughout the second half and tries from lineout drives allowed them to close to 33-27 after 72 minutes.

The Highlanders pulled away with two penalties in the last five minutes.

That left the second-place Lions 11 points off the pace set by overall leader the Crusaders. - AP

Warriors’ spine misfires

By Daniel Gilhooly The Warriors failed to cope with the absence of Shaun Johnson and Issac Luke during their directionless loss to the Sydney Roosters, says skipper Roger Tuivasa-Sheck.

The 32-0 hiding in Auckland on Saturday was lamented by Tuivasa-Sheck, whose third-placed team opened the season with five straight wins but struck wobbles over their next five.

Inspiring wins over St George Illawarra and Wests Tigers have blended with hefty losses to the Brisbane Melbourne and now the Roosters, with the latter possibly the most dispiriting.

The Warriors were a distant second in the battle of the trenches and their defence was easily prised open.

However, it was the muted attacking effort which most concerned Tuivasa-Sheck, who admitted he, halfback Mason Lino and hooker Karl Lawton were out of synch in trying to mirror the influence of Johnson and Luke.

“Me and Mason and Karl could have done a lot better to help Greeny out,” he said.

“It felt like a lot of pressure was on him just to run the whole goal line.

“Mason, he’s done it before, Greeny and Karl know that those combinations can be a lot better.”

Warriors skipper Roger Tuivasa-Sheck isn’t a happy man.

Another spine configuration may be needed next week against Parramatta after Lino suffered an ankle injury which requires scans.

Coach Stephen Kearney said he will consider selection tweaks.

Kearney said he was impressed by what he saw from “a couple of players” in reserve grade but wouldn’t confirm if he was referring to new club signing Gerard Beale, the veteran Kiwis utility back who has recovered from a broken leg.

Meanwhile Dylan Napa’s borderline hits and Jake Friend’s excruciating injury are all part of

the NRL and shouldn’t be singled out, according to Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson.

Queensland State of Origin prop Napa was a central figure in the Roosters’ 32-0 mauling of the Warriors, unleashing a succession of big hits as his side dominated the forward contest.

One bruising tackle on Isaiah Papali’i led to him being placed on report, while some other collisions might pique the interest of the match review committee.

Asked if the 25-year-old was bordering on dangerous play, Robinson was succinct.

“He’s a front-rower,” he said.

“People like to isolate guys, and that’s fair, but everyone played their role.”

Co-captain Boyd Cordner, who is likely to butt heads with Napa in this year’s Origin series, was more bombastic, describing every hit from his team-mate as a potential momentum changer.

“I don’t play against him week in, week out but I’m sure he puts that fear into other teams,” he said.

“They’ll probably look for where he is in the defensive line.”

Robinson confirmed tough hooker Friend was playing with a cracked sternum which needed painkillers.

Rather than dwell on the courage required to play a long season in such pain, Robinson said it was part of a sport that had few physical equivalents.

“If you walk in and see players preparing for a match, that’s the beauty of our sport,” Robinson said.

“They go and get what they need to do to get out onto the field.

“People watch our game for character.

“As far as team sports go, we’re at the extreme end on pushing them mentally and physically, under fatigue, with brutality.”

Bennett maintains top 10 spot in Giro George Bennett has remained ensconced in the top 10 at the Giro d’Italia after an entertaining finish on stage eight.

Bennett has finished in 15th on the summit finish of Montevergine di Mercogliano, coming home in the main group as rain pelted down.

The Kiwi climber remains one minute and 11 seconds down on overall leader Simon Yates, but fell one spot into 10th overall after Richard Carapaz rode away to take the stage.

The leader of the young rider’s classification attacked with 1.3 kilometres to go in the pouring rain, and got away from the bunch to win by seven seconds, and take the 10 bonus seconds on the line as well.

That jumped him ahead of Bennett, who much like the other general classification contenders, was perfectly happy to ride in the reduced bunch until the final sprint to the line.

It was not a climb to trouble the GC men, except for Chris Froome, who crashed in the wet

conditions with five kilometres to go.

As he made his way back into the peloton, he was struggling to handle his bike, and then banged

into a perturbed Bennett.

There was no harm done though, and the favourites continued on at a steady pace, happy to let Carapaz go.

Once clear, the 24 year old zoomed by the last remnant of the breakaway – Bennett’s teammate Koen Bouwman – and powered away to beat the bunch by seven seconds.

Davide Formolo finished in second place, while Thibaut Pinot sprinted home in third to take four bonus seconds, and reduce his deficit to Yates to 41 seconds.

Yates comfortably crossed the line in fifth to retain the pink jersey, with Kiwi team-mate Sam Bewley again putting in a solid shift, riding on the front for a large portion of the stage’s flat section as the Mitchelton-Scott team safely contained the early breakaway.

There should be a greater shake-up on the general classification on stage nine, where the majority of the final 45 kilometres are uphill, including a particularly gruelling last few kilometres.

It’s a stage which should suit Bennett, and give him another chance to take back time as the Giro continues to heat up.- NZME

Bennett chasing answers Wayne Bennett admits he isn’t sure what his options are after more injuries to Brisbane’s forward pack in a worrying NRL loss to Manly.

Bennett conceded Alex Glenn (knee) and Payne Haas (shoulder) would both miss at least one week after becoming casualties in the 38-24 loss. They will join experienced pair Matt Gillett (neck) and Josh McGuire (ankle) on the sidelines and further exacerbate a problem Bennett admits they have no solution to.

Timely success for stayer Highlad provided his owner with a welcome tonic when he overcame trying underfoot conditions for further success on Saturday.

Under a cool ride from Jonathan Riddell, the High Chaparral fouryear-old won for the third time in his last four race outings with a comprehensive victory in the Gr.3 Campbell Infrastructure Rotorua Cup (2200m).

“I’m very pleased for his owner Scott Richardson, who has been in ill-health,” said Murray Baker, who trains in partnership with Andrew Forsman.

Between Baker and his Sydneybased son Bjorn, they have prepared 70 winners for Richardson.

“This horse is under-rated – he performed in Melbourne as a threeyear-old and we like him a lot,” Baker said.

“He can run on all types of tracks and he’s a big horse who’s taken a while, but he’s hitting his straps now.”

Highlad settled about midfield on the fence before Riddell improved from the 1000m and had the fouryear-old into fourth spot 800m from home.

Basketball - in a chair Shooting a ball through a basketball hoop while sitting down isn’t easy, just ask the group of local celebrities who gave wheelchair basketball a go on Saturday.

They were taking part in an exhibition game of wheelchair basketball against the Canterbury wheelchair basketball team at the Oxford Street basketball stadium.

The event was part of Ashburton’s Wheels Week festivities.

Pictured trying his best to keep up with the outrageously-skilled opposition was Peter Jacob, who turned out to be the local team’s sharpshooter.

SPRINTS FIND NEW CHAMP

A new champion has been crowned at the Ashburton Car Club’s annual Street Sprints.

Christchurch-based Josh Mitchell took the title after beating out Jeremy Beaton from Kaiapoi in the top two shoot-out at the Riverside Industrial Park late yesterday afternoon.

It was a case of third time lucky for Mitchell, who originally hailed from Timaru. For the past two years he’d competed in the Subaru he built with the intention of one day taking out the street sprints title, but mechanical issues brought both campaigns to early ends.

“This is the biggest event on my calendar and I built the car after I raced here the first

time and said I’m going to win Ashburton,” Mitchell said.

This year, the car performed like a dream.

“The car didn’t skip a beat, everything was spot on,” he said.

It was the 29th time the Ashburton Car Club had run the Street Sprints and Mitchell said he remembered coming up from Timaru to watch as a kid.

This year he came to Ashburton hoping to beat the track record set by last year’s winner Tim Cook in the top two shoot-out.

That record was 2.22.9 minutes and Mitchell’s top time, set in the top two shoot-out, was 2.23.5 minutes.

“The last run I did (in the top four run) was half a second off the record so I was really trying to aim for that,” Mitchell said.

“But I just made a couple of really small mistakes in that last run, it wasn’t quite perfect.”

It was good enough to beat out Beaton though, with Daniel Liemburg from Timaru recovering well from a mishap in his first run of the weekend on Saturday to finish third.

Liemburg’s Nissan locked up after crossing the finishing line and he slid into haybales, but a quick rebuild of the front of his car allowed him to continue on.

Defending champion Cook, originally from Ashburton but now living in Christchurch, was the man to beat at the end of day one with the fastest time of 2.26.9 minutes.

But he had to pull out before the top 32 stage due to mechanical issues.

Past winner Glenn Frew from Mosgiel then became the man to beat. He was the fastest early yesterday before he too had to pull out due to mechanical problems after the top 16 runs.

Two Ashburton drivers featured in the top eight, with Allan Turner finishing seventh and last year’s runner up Lyndon Ball eighth.

Ashburton Car Club spokesperson Ben Lambert said the event had gone well, with the forecast for heavy rain not coming to anything, which was good for both the drivers and the spectators.

The weekend also included a twilight autocross within the street sprints track which attracted a full field of 30 entries, with Konrad Scott winning in his Chevy.
