Whooping cough down

With the worst rate of whooping cough notifications in the country, Mid Canterbury residents will be happy to learn that the district received a clean bill of health last week.

After an onslaught of whooping cough cases, and New Zealand

in the midst of an epidemic, the Canterbury District Health Board data, which is released weekly showed a report of zero cases for Mid Canterbury in the past week, following one case for the weekend ending March 2 and three cases in both February and January.

That followed 10 confirmed

cases in the district in December.

However, although the numbers appear to be decreasing – locals are by no means out of the woods.

It is not the first time she has been based at Mount Hutt College, she was sports co-ordinator there from 1997 to 2006.

Today this is a role held by her daughter Latoya Keepa, who has been the sports co-ordinator at the school for about two years.

Visitors to Ashburton could be forgiven for popping into the building marked as the TAB betting agency and wondering, “What’s with all the bikes?”

Paul Wylie Cyclerama has made a temporary move into the premises while their original shop at 211 Burnett Street undergoes earthquake strengthening.

Wylie, a well-known cycling figure in Ashburton, has operated from his original Burnett Street shop for 15 years selling bikes, cycling gear and other accessories.

He said he expects to be in the temporary spot for “three or four months” before being able to move back.

“It started off as earthquake renovations, but now I think they are doing a few other things while they’re at it.”

Wylie said staff spent about a week shifting gear and cleaning out their old premises, where 15 years’ worth of clutter also got a good cleanout.

Most of the shop’s bikes were able to fit into the new premises, which Wylie said had a fair bit of storage, while others are temporarily stored in shipping containers.

“It could be worse … I guess it’s just one of life’s challenges,” he said.

The New Zealand Racing Board made a decision to close the TAB itself last year with technology taking over the betting world.

Wylie said punters entering the shop still wanting to make a gamble can carry on into the MSA, where they can use a machine at the bar.

Bumper ski season visits expected after record year

New Zealand recorded its highest ever total of skier days last year with 1.6 million visitors to skifields around the country.

Ski Areas Association of New Zealand (SAANZ) chairman Marty Toomey said there had been an eight per cent increase on the previous winter, adding to steady growth over the past four years averaging five per cent per year.

He put the success down to industry investment in lifts, facilities and snowmaking.

“New Zealand skifields had a bumper 2017 season with major new infrastructure, and new features on some of our biggest ski areas a key driving factor to success,” Toomey said.

“The result smashed the previous record set in 2009 when the Australian Government tax breaks provided an unprecedented uplift in trans-Tasman arrivals.

“All predictions point to another record-setting year in 2018 as season pass sales heat up ahead of winter. Add to that the success of our athletes in PyeongChang, and we’re expecting the New Zealand industry to continue growing.”

and once again celebrated being voted the best ski resort in New Zealand for the third consecutive year, Toomey said.

Mt Hutt manager James McKenzie said Mt Hutt skier numbers reflected the national increase, being the best since 2009.

Year-on-year investment is continuing this year with upgrading of its snowmaking system, set to pump 50 per cent more water to an expanding fleet of guns. The aim will be to have the normally later-opening triple chair operating on opening day, which is

targeted for June 8, alongside the Summit Six and quad chair.

Regarding further Canterbury investment, Toomey said more than $6 million had been spent at Porters Ski Area in 2015 on a new quad chairlift and automated high-tech snowmaking system.

“This was the biggest investment by Porters in its 50-year history. It has transformed the ski area and as a result has increased patronage in the subsequent winters,” he said.

This summer, the company bought the 40-bed Porters Lodge and built a professionally designed mountain bike track, ensuring year-round operation and revenue.

Mt Hutt’s NZSki sister skifields at Queenstown had experienced major investment and growth, with $45 million spent at the Remarkables which included on a six-seater speed chairlift, new trails, snowmaking and the addition of an award-winning base building, and a better learner experience at Coronet Peak and record crowds at its twilight and night ski events.

Infrastructure investment continued at nearby Cardrona as it was acquired by tourism giant Real Journeys, and included a new $10 million chondola, which is a combined gondola cabins and chairs lift, as well as base facility upgrades and improvements in terrain, car-parking and snowmaking.

The skifield experienced its biggest ever year with visitor days eclipsing 300,000 for the first time.

An afternoon off for most students

Many Mid Canterbury schoolchildren will enjoy an afternoon free of classes today while teachers attend a paid union meeting at Ashburton Intermediate School.

Teachers and principals from across the district are meeting with the educational union to discuss current issues around teacher shortages, supporting children with additional learning needs and the problem of teachers and

principals “being bogged down in administration”.

The New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) are holding the meetings right around New Zealand to discuss their collective bargaining goals.

Although area schools are not bargaining, they have been invited to take part.

Many schools including Rakaia, Ashburton Borough, Hampstead, Netherby and Allenton will close before the meeting and are asking

parents to pick up their children early.

Others such as Mayfield and St Joseph’s – with enough staff choosing not to attend – will remain open through the afternoon.

In brief $2.4m meth haul Two people have been charged after a haul of methamphetamine worth about $2.4 million was seized at Auckland International Airport. Police and Customs made the 13.5 kilogram seizure after allegedly finding the drugs concealed within heavy steel machinery. A 22-year-old Waikato man and 48-year-old Auckland woman have been charged with importing the Class A drug.

They appeared in court after being arrested during two search warrants at Waikato addresses at the weekend. Police say they are looking for three others.

Firefighters called out to historic church

A speedy response from Ashburton Fire and Emergency volunteers stopped a fire from taking hold of the Plains Museum’s historic church yesterday.

Volunteers raced to the Tinwald property shortly after 11am after material began smouldering inside the heritage building’s walls.

They were able to remove some of the wall cladding and

deal with the problem before fire could take hold, said the Plains Museum’s Cyril Hedgcock.

“We’re lucky it wasn’t a major,” he said.

Built in 1887 and originally serving as the church for the

former small Mid Canterbury township of Waterton, it is one of several heritage buildings on site.

Firefighters in three appliances were working at the scene for around 40 minutes.

“A formal proposal will then be developed later in the year and anyone can make a submission.

“The resulting representation arrangements will be in place ready for the next local body elections in 2019.”

The review includes looking at

the number of wards and elected members council has and the way members are elected – either whole of district, by wards or a combination of the two. The defining of the ward boundaries and the existence and structure of community boards is also being considered.

Two people who died after a road crash near the Whakapapa skifield in the central North Island came from Germany, police say. They were Rebekka Maria Isenmann, 31, and Simon Daniel Schweizer, 35.

The incident happened on State Highway 47 on Saturday morning, and involved a truck and a van.

Police say the serious crash unit is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash.

Students suspended Two Christchurch high school students have been suspended after taking inappropriate photos of teachers – including up a female teacher’s skirt – and sharing them with mates. Police were called to Christchurch Boys’ High School after the recent incidents, which also saw a student post a video of a teacher to a porn website.

Meth easier to buy than cannabis Methamphetamine is now easier to buy than cannabis across the entire country, according to a study.

Research conducted by Massey University found that only 14 per cent of cannabis users described that drug availability as “very easy” to access compared to 54 per cent of methamphetamine users.

Lead researcher associate professor Chris Wilkins says the data suggests reducing supply needs to be refocused on meth than on cannabis.

“Methamphetamine is widely considered to be the more harmful drug but cannabis is more vulnerable to routine law enforcement activity due to the space and time required to cultivate it and its bulky and distinctive physical appearance and smell.

“These findings suggest a need to further prioritise the focus on meth, rather than on cannabis.

This could include increasing access to help services for substance use problems for people living in the regions,” he said.

The study used an anonymous online survey via a targeted Facebook campaign. A total of 6100 people took part.

Only 14 per cent of cannabis users could purchase it in 20 minutes or less while 31 per cent of meth users could find methamphetamine in the same timeframe.

Dr Wilkins said the data confirmed anecdotal reports that meth was easier to obtain than cannabis, which was found to be the case across the country.

However, higher availability of meth was found in Northland, Bay of Plenty, Hawke’s Bay, Gisborne, Waikato, Manawatu-Wanganui, West Coast and Southland.

The data will be presented to the Ministry of Health and other government agencies this month.

Teen loses battle against disease A Taranaki teenager has died of meningococcal disease just days after his illness was discovered.

New Plymouth Boys’ High School headmaster Paul Veric confirmed the student died on Saturday, March 10, due to meningococcal disease.

“During this tragic time, our sincerest thoughts and support are with his family and friends,” Veric said.

“We currently have, and will continue to have, many students and staff extremely upset by this tragedy.”

The Taranaki District Health Board was providing regular advice to the school, to ensure students and staff were safe and had access to information

around meningococcal disease.

“At this current time, the Taranaki District Health Board does not believe this case poses an increased risk to students at NPBHS, including immediate class members,” Veric said.

“There is also no increased risk to the wider community.”

Families of students who attended the school had been contacted about the death, he said.

The death came just a day before TDHB Medical Officer of Health Dr Greg Simmons issued a reminder for the community to be vigilant for signs and symptoms of the disease.

Simmons said the disease could progress very quickly and initially appear similar to the flu.

“However, meningococcal disease can be very serious and people should be reminded of the signs and symptoms of the disease.”

These could include a high temperature, headache, confusion and sleepiness, joint pain, aching muscles and or neck stiffness, vomiting and a skin rash.

He said sick individuals needed to be checked often and seek medical attention immediately.

School system review gets wide licence

Second sexual assault allegation A new allegation has surfaced about a sexual assault at a Labour youth camp.

A woman has complained to Labour’s general secretary Andrew Kirton about another sexual assault at a different event to the youth camp incident from last month that involved four 16-yearolds.

Kirton says he was approached about the incident yesterday, which is of a similar nature.

“Another incident occurred at an event a few years ago.

“I’ve spoken to the person involved, offered them support, and obviously offered to go to the Police if they wish to do that.”

National leader Simon Bridges says the Labour Party has left itself open to accusations of a cover-up because of its failure to disclose alleged indecent assaults at a summer camp near Waihi to police or parents.

The former Crown prosecutor said that the description of the

incident, in which an apparently drunk 20-year-old put his hand down the pants of three 16-yearolds, would be termed indecent assault.

The police should have been told about it “and by not doing that, the Labour Party opens itself up to allegation of a cover-up here”, Bridges told Heather du Plessis-Allan on Newstalk ZB. He also said that, as a parent, he would have wanted to know so that his son or daughter was getting what they needed to get through it.

Kirton has apologised to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern for the handling of the matter.

Those affected had not been offered counselling until almost a month after the event.

“We could have brought the professional help in earlier, even though we were trying to be led by those involved.

“Also the delay with the communication after two of them got back in touch was not acceptable.”

A review aimed at modernising the 1980s-era Tomorrow Schools model has been given wide licence to find the best way of running and managing state schools, the Education Minister says.

Having been introduced in 1989, the Tomorrow Schools reforms gave individual schools greater control in managing their own affairs.

But releasing the review’s terms of reference yesterday, Minister Chris Hipkins called it a once-in-30-year opportunity to reinvigorate the system.

He said the review team would look for ways to create the bestpossible schooling system, one which prepared children for educational success and a future in a “rapidly-changing world”.

It would also consider how schools could interact differently with other schools, their communities and employers to get the best results for young people, he said.

“There’s been a lot of tinkering around the edges since Tomorrrow’s Schools was introduced, which has moved the governance, management and administration of schools further and further away from what it aimed

Safe full of cash raises legal query A safe left on the roadside for rubbish collection contained a wad of cash – possibly as much as $30,000 – which was discovered by council contractors.

The discovery of the cash has raised the legal question of whether ‘finders keepers’ applies – or if the money should be returned to the absent-minded safe owner who threw it away.

Council contractors stumbled upon the cash in the safe, which had been put out for inorganic rubbish collection in an Auckland suburb. The cash has been handed in to police.

Waste Management staff made the discovery after collecting the safe on the side of the road in Hillsborough last Wednesday.

The case raises a fascinating question about who can lay claim to valuables found on public property – and which has been put out as rubbish.

Barrister Marie Dyhrberg said in such cases it wasn’t as simple as “finders keepers”.

Anyone who found and kept a large sum of cash or valuable objects could be subject to ‘theft by finding’ if they did not hand it in to police.

“Common sense would tell you no one would abandon [cash] and that’s an oversight.”

Theft by finding means you cannot assume because you found something abandoned that it now belongs to you.

Monica Cadman said the cash discovery was “acted on immediately”.

Neither she nor police confirmed the amount, which the Herald understands could be as much as $30,000.

“We were made aware of the incident the same day and notified Auckland Council and police within 24 hours.”

The money was handed over to police who confirmed no crime or theft occurred and no charges have been laid against the six people involved, Cadman said.

“Waste Management has strict policies that govern the inorganic collection service and are following our normal investigation process.”

Police confirmed a sum of cash was handed into the Otahuhu police station after a safe containing a sum of cash was found on March 7.

“Police are making inquiries to locate the owner and establish how the safe came to be in an inorganic collection,” a police spokeswoman said.

It was too early in the investigation to confirm how quickly the money was handed in and the claim by Waste Management no crime or theft had occurred, the spokeswoman said.

However, she did say no complaint about the matter had been made to police.

The spokeswoman also did not confirm how much money was involved and whether it was known if the amount of cash found in the safe matched that handed in.

While most inorganic rubbish can reasonably be assumed to be abandoned, in this case common sense dictated someone probably didn’t mean to throw away cash of up to $30,000.

The fact it was a mistake did not reduce the original owner’s claim to the money, Dyhrberg said.

“The person who would argue ‘look, we found the safe it was abandoned’, common sense would say it’s a safe, they couldn’t get into it.

“You can’t possibly believe the owner abandoned that money.”

There was no specific law governing when ‘finders keepers’ applied or not,

rather case law would be used to prove lawful ownership.

“You won’t find the law sets it up, what you will find is the cases that went to the high court of the court of appeal and they set up certain circumstances.

“So you are guilty of theft by finding.”

Finders keepers, or not?

E

veryone daydreams about the day they walk along a street and stumble across a wad of cash, unwittingly and casually discarded on the ground.

But the big question, and often the part of the daydream you don’t get to, is what would you do with that money?

Do you spend it?

Stash it away for a rainy day?

Or put it into the hands of someone who will have the best chance of finding the rightful owner?

It’s a battle of honesty and doing what’s right, or a fight against thinking that, if someone was careless enough to lose a substantial amount of money, they can’t really need it all that much anyway.

Most will have pondered it, much like they do that neverhappening Lotto win, but only those who have been in the situation will probably have a true idea of the feelings that must come with it.

A story, on the previous page of today’s paper, highlights the good side of this kind of situation.

Some Auckland Council workers, collecting rubbish, found $30,000 in an abandoned safe

which had been put aside for disposal.

Now, you could argue that because the safe was left out for collection, that its owner was keen to get rid of the safe and its contents but, there’s also the stark reality that they had no idea the wealth that sat within its locked depths.

Theft by finding is an interesting term for the entire situation, if you were to decide to not be honest – particularly in this instance.

You’ve found something that has been earmarked for disposal.

That means it’s not wanted and surely any person thinking properly would have thought to check to ensure nothing remained inside the safe before disposing of it.

But once disposed, does that mean it’s fair game and now belongs to whoever finds it?

The law says no.

How it would stand up in a court of law would be an interesting scenario to watch play out.

There is no specific law governing finders keepers applied or not, rather case law would need be used to prove lawful ownership.

People rifle through others’ trash on a daily basis and if the council workers hadn’t found out that there was a small fortune tucked away in the safe – there’s no doubt that someone, potentially less honest or in a more desperate need of such a windfall, would have found it next and we may never have even known

If you were to ask 100 people what they would do in the same situation, you’d probably get 100 different answers.

Many would return it instantly, because there are more good people in our society than there are bad.

Others might hold onto it for a while, to see if anyone went public in search of their missing money, before making their next decision, and others would just blatantly take it and run with it in the hope of never getting caught.

It’s one of those dilemmas in life that you really don’t want to find yourself in.

The end-of-education limbo

T

he transition through puberty is often credited as the most awkward phase of one’s life, and quite rightly.

Gangly physique and acne speckled faces mingle with raging hormones in quite the spectacular shite show, leaving us with photos best burnt and memories best repressed deep down inside the right frontal cortex.

But epiphany struck on a visit to Dunedin last weekend, when I glanced around my good friends and observed their once careless, reckless fun tainted by another dose of puberty-like awkwardness.

Those friends, like myself eight months ago and like other acquaintances at the end of high school, have encountered the ugly end-of-education limbo.

It’s the second awkward phase of life. The one that no one warns you about.

The transition to real life.

Slowly but surely, my friends are seeing the sun set on university’s glory days.

Fresh-faced youth with newfangled lingo are taking over the university traditions of old, and shunting my ageing friends further from their chilly Hyde Street comfort zone.

loan security and broken sleep routines is crashing to the ground, leaving naught but the cold, barren realities of real life and responsibility.

Now, once enjoyable activities are intruded with nagging questions about how to be a real adult in a student’s semi-malnourished, poorly dressed body and leisurely mind-set.

Among my friends I have identified three natural responses to the awkward introduction to real life. Freeze, flight or fight.

Firstly, those who freeze see the stark face of real life, freak, and hold their ground within the safe parameters of university.

By continuing into a second major, a postgraduate course or even a master’s degree, they fathom real life can be put on hold, revelry can be prolonged and job security can be maximised.

To quote one of my friends, “I just didn’t know what else to do,

eh.” And so they dither. Even if that means sweeping their Studylink loan update letters straight towards the trash can.

Even if they’re still figuring out precisely what their job will be or whether they even want to work in that field.

Then there are those who take flight. The lure of Europe or Asia proves too powerful to resist and off they gallivant to find themselves, leaving the rest of us to fathom how they coughed up the funds and whether we should delete them off social media before their filthy Greek summer evening pictures infiltrate our cold winter mornings.

Some choose to keep running, settle in a job in the antipodes, and not return to their doting Kiwi friends for two or more years(please come back Laura).

Finally, there are the punks who try to roll up their sleeves, slap war stripes on their face and tell real life who is boss.

The fighters.

It’s not always pretty.

Those who successfully carve out a big-kid career often do so with cumbersome compromises like living back at home, being the youngest in their office by several years, or shifting to far-flung bizarre places like (ahem) the Ashburton Guardian (ahem).

To spend more than a decade diligently sponging up knowledge and then have that knowledge twisted and wrung out by real life isn’t going to be painless.

But despite the awkwardness of it all, despite the stress, my mother once told me the early twenties were the best time in life and I struggle not to believe her.

Just like puberty, I’m sure there will be sure fire positives to the tumultuousness.

There will be memories made, friends found, new spaces explored and at the end of it all, hopefully a little more of that sweet, shiny cash money.

Whether a freezer, a flighter or a fighter, it seems the early twenties are a time to seize life before encountering the impending perils of physical decline.

And if anyone in their early twenties tells you they truly know exactly what they’re doing – you, my friend, have been lied to.

Trump backs down Not even two weeks ago, President Donald Trump appeared to buck the National Rifle Association – publicly endorsing Democratic-friendly gun-control ideas while mocking other Republicans as “petrified” of the powerful firearms lobby.

“They have great power over you people,” Trump said on February 28, referring to the NRA while addressing a group of lawmakers at the White House.

“They have less power over me.”

But now Trump has retreated, putting forward a modest package of gun-safety measures this week that has none of the provisions opposed by the NRA that he seemed to back days earlier.

The shift provides another example of the strong influence wielded by the NRA both at the White House and on Capitol Hill, where most lawmakers remain opposed to significant policy changes in the wake of the shooting massacre that killed 17 at a Florida high school last month.

“I think we could all see it coming. I wish the president had televised the meeting with the NRA like he televised the meeting with us,” Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said, referring to a March 1 huddle between Trump and top officials at the gun rights group.

“Clearly, the NRA was more persuasive than I was.”

In the face of such criticism, Trump defended his plan in a series of tweets yesterday.

US president Donald Trump is back on the same page as the gun rights brigade.

Stocks will soon be out. Highly trained expert teachers will be allowed to conceal carry, subject to State Law. Armed guards OK, deterrent!” Trump wrote in one Twitter message.

White House officials said Trump’s official gun plan was drafted within the confines of what Congress will allow – a notable contrast to Trump’s “I alone can fix it” image as someone who could singlehandedly cut through Washington gridlock.

Administration officials also disputed that Trump’s plan amounts to a reversal of his positions since that February meeting, when the president surprised lawmakers of both parties by appearing to back proposals to raise the purchase age for AR-15s and similar types of rifles and to expand background checks.

He also declared at that meeting that law enforcement officials should “take the guns first, go through due process

second” for those suspected of mental illness.

“He hasn’t backed away from these things at all,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said during a contentious back-and-forth with reporters yesterday.

“But he can’t make them happen with a broad stroke of the pen. You have to have some congressional component to do some of these things.”

Publicly, Republican senators had dismissed Trump’s embrace of Democraticfriendly gun measures as the negotiating tactic of a businessman who wanted to hear from all sides before coming to a decision.

His defenders on Capitol Hill said much the same, arguing that Trump’s plan was crafted in political reality, considering the composition of Congress.

“I’ve called the meeting we had at the White House on TV really more of a brainstorming session. It was not a legisla-

tive strategy session,” Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texs, said.

“I think as the president and the White House has talked to Congress, they found out what is achievable and what’s not.”

Yet Vice President Mike Pence spoke with a number of Senate Republicans who privately raised serious concerns about what Trump said at the gun summit, according to one White House official who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

At a meeting on March 1, NRA lobbyist Chris Cox told Trump that some of his ideas, particularly raising the age limit to buy a semiautomatic rifle from 18 to 21, wouldn’t pass and that raising the age wouldn’t stop crimes, according to people briefed on the meeting.

The meeting was warm, these people said, with the president telling Cox that he valued the NRA and wanted to be on the same page.

Silent movie comeback There’s barely a word spoken in A Quiet Place – but critics are raving about the new psychological thriller. The film, which debuted at SXSW over the weekend, has scored a 100 per cent approval rating on aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. A Quiet Place follows a family who has survived an apocalypse but is forced to live in near silence because of predators who react to noise. It was written and directed by The Office star John Krasinski, and stars his wife, Emily Blunt. And it’s had rave reviews from critics after its SXSW debut.

Russia responsible for attack, says US The US has “full confidence” in Britain’s assessment that Russia was “likely responsible” for a nerve agent attack on a former Russian spy in Britain last week, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says.

“There is never a justification for this type of attack – the attempted murder of a private citizen on the soil of a sovereign nation – and we are outraged that Russia appears to have again engaged in such behaviour,” Tillerson said.

The top US diplomat said he had spoken to British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and that the US stood “in solidarity with our allies in the United Kingdom” and would “continue to co-ordinate closely our responses”.

He added: “We agree that those responsible – both those who committed the crime and those who ordered it – must face appropriately serious consequences”.

The UK says former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned with a “military grade” nerve agent that was undoubtedly produced

by Russia.

British Prime Minister Theresa May told Parliament it is “highly likely” that Russia was behind the attack.

Heather Locklear has been charged with several counts of battery against first responders who answered a domestic violence call at her Southern California home. The 56-year-old Melrose Place actress was charged yesterday with four misdemeanour counts of battery on an officer or emergency personnel, and one misdemeanour count of resisting or obstructing an officer. Sheriff ’s officials said Locklear kicked, pushed and shouted at deputies who were answering a report that she had been violent with her boyfriend February 26.

Unhappy in the workforce wasn’t a surprise young women – and men – were unhappy in the workplace.

“If you look at it from management top-down, I don’t think a lot of the managers out there know or understand how to manage millennials coming through, and therefore don’t understand what motivates and challenges them in the workplace,” Long said.

“People’s expectations have changed.

“We have a lot of young, 20plus people who don’t want to be stuck in an office for eight hours of a day.

“They’re looking at flexibility of workplace and not having to fight the traffic, to work at home for a few hours or maybe if they’re going overseas, to work remotely.”

Company managements needed training on how to engage millennials, Long said.

“The way we used to engage staff in the past isn’t going to work anymore.

There’s a lot of unhappy young women in the workplace.

“We’ve got to be open to looking at other ways of operating to get the best out of them.

“Expectations of what they want to do in the work environment is not being met.”

There were also extra pressures on young women who wanted to

start a family earlier in life, Long said.

Research findings show prospects for women progress as they get older, but are still negative, until the 36 to 45 age group when they start reporting positive satisfaction and work-life balance, Haar said.

Women aged 56 years and over were found to be the happiest workers in the workforce, which likely reflected a good career and more comfortable home life, he said.

“For women across all ages, we might consider the effects like a Nike swoosh.

“It dips down deeply at the start, slowly starts rising, and then the trajectory is strong and upwards,” Haar said.

“If across time women are like the Nike swoosh, then men are much more like the Loch Ness monster.

“A serpent curve of ups and downs until they finally see the light, like Nessie’s raised head, at 56-plus years.”

Vege prices surging Humid conditions in February pushed up the price of a number of vegetable products in February.

Data from Statistics New Zealand showed that lettuce prices rose 32 per cent in the month to February 2018, the largest monthly rise for a February since 2013. “In recent weeks, a combination of humid weather and Gita have affected some crops,” consumer prices manager Geoffrey Wong said. “As this occurred towards the end of February, we may continue to see higher prices in March.” Numerous supermarkets put up signage apologising for the high prices of these vegetables.

Lorson would not rule out making a bid for the rugby rights – the main drawcard for Kiwi sports fans – although Fellet said it would take a lot to wrangle these from Sky. “Of the range of people looking at the rugby rights, I don’t think that’s the one I would be losing sleep over,” he said.

“When I did the first rugby deal 25 years ago it was the most contested piece of content, and every year since it has been the most contested piece of content, so it comes with the territory.”

He said whoever threw their hat in for the rights would have to be prepared to invest at least $50 million to $60 million on production set up.

According to Fowler the rights could come down to more than just the highest bid.

“Sky have the relationship already, so yes the New Zealand Rugby Union is a commercial operation but you would think it

would need to be a considerably better deal on commercial terms for them to [drop Sky],” he said.

“And there would probably need to be some commitment at a deeper level given the importance of New Zealand rugby to the country.”

Hamilton Hindin Greene investment advisor Jeremy Sullivan said more competition would put pressure on Sky but as long as they could retain the rugby rights, they had the upper hand.

However, he noted Fetch had the backing to be able to make a serious bid.

“They certainly have the firepower to be able to bid for the rights, but you have to look at the fundamentals and the infrastructure associated with producing it,” Sullivan said.

“They would have to hire the commentators, the production crew, the TV cameras, and then there’s the contractual stuff so it’s quite a big outfit Sky has,” he said.

“If Sky did lose the rugby rights though ... watch out.”

Sky boss ‘not losing sleep’ Sky TV chief executive John Fellet isn’t fazed over Australian pay TV Fetch eyeing a move into New Zealand.

Fellet said Fetch, the second largest pay-TV operator in Australia, had been rumoured to be entering the local market for years, and that the company was used to having competition.

“I never discount any potential competitor but we face competition every day from Lightbox to Netflix and supposedly Amazon or Google,” he said.

“Fetch is just one of them.”

The Australian-based company said it was considering a launch into New Zealand, with chief executive Scott Lorson saying the company would not do things by halves.

“New Zealand is not a market where you can achieve success through half measures. You need to burn the boats,” Lorson said.

Mark Fowler from Hobson Wealth Partners said while this could put further pressure on Sky, it would depend on the content Fetch was offering.

Young women are the unhappiest employees in the workforce, research suggests.

Women aged between 20 and 25 years were found to have the lowest life and job satisfaction and no work-life balance out of all working age groups, according to an Auckland University of Technology’s (AUT) study of 1500 New Zealanders.

Men aged between 20 and 25 were also found to have the lowest life satisfaction but had considerably higher job satisfaction and good work-life balance.

AUT research author and professor Jarrod Haar said the findings likely represented young women of that age “getting to grips with ‘life’, possibly with less money and limited assets”.

In comparison, men employees in their mid to late 20s have high life and job satisfaction and good work-life balance, but those don’t pick up for women until they hit 36 years old.

If you’re on your way past the Ashburton Trust Event Centre this week, keep an ear out for the hard-working vocal chords of 149 Mid Canterbury Summer Singing School (MCSSS) students.

The group launched into a week of practice yesterday before they bring a musical theatre production to the stage on Friday and Saturday.

It’s the biggest production yet for the MCSSS, which has been operating each January for 18 years and is musically helmed

by Ashburton singing tutor Jo Castelow.

“We now have people from all over, from as far as Timaru and Christchurch, and each time brings a new mix of voices,” said Castelow.

Some singers have been involved in the week-long course for more than 10 years, she said,

The group range in age from 9 to 21 years and includes members of NAZDA and first-year university students.

This year’s production is themed Time Travellers and will cover musical theatre and tunes from across the ages – from My Fair Lady and Bing Crosby to recent hits like Hamilton and Moana, along with everything in between, Castelow said. “Among the juniors everyone knows the songs from Moana, but they find that they love singing the older ones just as much,” she said.

And not only does the theme provide something for everyone in the audience, she said, but gives the young singers the opportunity to learn about various musicals. The group received their music a month ago, and auditioned for solo positions on Sunday. They are currently undergoing two days of musical

A number of older buildings around the Ashburton District will shortly be sporting signs that spell out how they rank against new building standards.

As part of the on-going drive to ensure all buildings will be earthquake safe, the Ashburton District Council will be sending signs to owners of buildings built prior to 1976 and will be asking them to display those signs prominently on the outside of their property.

It’s been a long process getting to this point, council building services manager Michael Wong said, but the placard templates had now arrived and these would be sent to property owners over the next month.

The placards would serve a two fold purpose – making the public aware of a building’s compliance level and encouraging owners to carry out necessary strengthening work.

Wong anticipates there will be about 150 sent out in February to owners of non-compliant buildings.

Te Araroa walkers are on the rise, benefiting the summer tourism industry in Methven.

Many who do the 3000-kilometre trail, which runs the length of New Zealand, end up in the ski town, as it is a natural resting point near the uncrossable Rakaia River.

Methven i-SITE consultant Lyndsay Agnew said December to February was peak season for trail walkers, and she was assisting about half a dozen per week.

“Most of them are doing the whole trail or the whole South Island, depending on how much time they have got,” she said.

“They are really interesting people, you have to be a certain breed to want to go and walk 3000 kilometres.”

They mostly came from Europe and North America, and walked north to south, hitch-hiking into Methven from above Lake Coleridge. They generally stayed in the campground or backpacker lodges in Methven.

“It’s nice to have them here and they spread the word when they go back,” she said.

Walkers rejoin the trail on Blackford Road in the Rakaia Gorge, and Methven Travel provides transport on the “empty” section of its school bus run, and operates an on-demand shuttle service in school holidays.

The Te Araroa section through Mid Canterbury goes from here to the Hakatere Heron Road, taking a public access easement over Glenariffe Station, then crossing the 60,000-hectare Hakatere Conservation Park.

Among those undertaking Te Araroa is American Clayton Beckett. His trail name is Chef, he has a travel blog at chefspecial5.com and is from Connecticut.

hitchhiked to Methven, and left at the weekend aiming to hitch to north of Lake Coleridge to resume the trail.

Beckett said the trail to date had had many river crossings, and some mountainous terrain, as well as farm tracks and dirt roads.

Besides the road walks, which he did not like as they lacked the wilderness appeal of true trail walking, and a lack of markers in some areas, he was enjoying the scenery and meeting lots of people.

Be tempted by the humble apple I

f you have an apple tree in your backyard then you’ll be reaping a bountiful harvest.

And while it’s great to have plenty of apples on hand, there are only so many you can eat or freeze.

Give surplus away to friends, but try them in other dishes – baking, chutneys or savoury dishes, they are happy alongside just about any other base ingredient.

Brie, apple and onion tart 320g pack ready-rolled puff pastry 1T olive or rapeseed oil, plus a drizzle 3 large onions, halved and sliced 2T white wine vinegar, plus a splash 1T dijon mustard Small bunch thyme, leaves picked, plus a few sprigs to serve 1 eating apple 100g cranberry sauce (or chutney) 175g brie, sliced ■ Heat oven to 200°C. ■ Unroll the pastry sheet onto a large baking tray (leave it on the paper from the pack).

■ If the edges are not straight, trim them with a sharp knife.

■ Score a border, about 1cm in from the edge.

■ Score a criss-cross pattern over the central piece of pastry.

■ Bake for 15 mins.

■ Heat the oil in a large pan.

■ Add the onions and cook for 1015 mins until softened and starting to caramelise.

■ Stir in the vinegar, bubble for 1 min more.

■ Add the dijon and thyme, season well and set aside.

■ Slice the apple thinly through the core and remove any seeds.

■ Toss the slices in a splash of vinegar to prevent them from browning.

■ The pastry should be puffed and starting to colour.

■ Push down the centre, then spread over the onions.

■ Add blobs of cranberry sauce, then top with the apple slices

and brie, overlapping them to cover the tart.

■ Add a few more thyme sprigs, drizzle with a little oil.

■ Put back in the oven for a further 25 mins until the cheese is bubbling and the apple slices are soft.

■ Serve warm or cold.

Apple, date and ginger chutney 2.5–3kg cooking apples (unpeeled weight) 500g super soft dates (weight including stones) 500g onions (unpeeled weight) 350g brown sugar 650g granulated or caster sugar 600ml malt vinegar 3 heaped t ginger powder 1t extra hot chilli powder 1T salt ■ Stone and roughly chop dates.

■ Peel and dice onions.

■ Peel, core and chop apples into a large pan of cold water.

■ Drain well just before cooking.

■ Measure all ingredients into a large saucepan or stock pot and mix well.

■ Cook on a medium heat until apples soften and liquid thickens.

■ Transfer the hot finished chutney into hot sterilised jars.

■ Leave to mature for at least 3 months.

Devilish red cabbage 1T sunflower oil 1 onion, chopped 450g red cabbage, shredded 225g cooking apples, peeled, cored and diced

2.5cm piece fresh root ginger, peeled and grated Pinch of ground cinnamon or allspice 150ml vegetable stock Salt and freshly ground black pepper ■ Heat the oil in a large saucepan ■ Add the onion, red cabbage and apple and cook gently for 5 minutes.

■ Add the ginger and cinnamon or allspice and the vegetable stock ■ Bring to the boil ■ Reduce the heat and simmer gently for 15-20 minutes until most of the liquid has evaporated and the vegetables are tender.

Apple cinnamon turnovers 2 sheets frozen puff pastry 2 granny smith apples, peeled, cored and sliced finely 1T lemon juice 1/2 t ground cinnamon 1T flour 1T sugar 2T brown sugar 1 egg, beaten 1t butter, for baking sheet ■ Preheat oven to 180°C and thaw pastry sheets on the kitchen counter for 10 minutes.

■ Toss sliced apples with lemon juice, cinnamon, flour, and sugars and set aside.

■ Slice each sheet of pastry into quarters.

■ Spoon approximately 1T of the apple mixture into the centre of each square.

■ Leave a 2cm border around the edges.

■ Fold the square over into a triangle, and press the edges firmly together with end of knife.

■ Butter baking sheet and brush turnovers with egg wash.

■ Place a few slashes in the top of the turnover to release steam while baking.

■ Bake for 15 minutes until golden brown and serve immediately with vanilla ice cream.

30 minutes.

■ Serve with icecream, cream or custard.

Apple and rhubarb crumble

■ Combine all ingredients in a medium pan.

■ Bring to a boil; then reduce the heat.

■ Simmer, covered, for about 10 minutes.

■ Stir, cook, uncovered, for about 20 minutes until thickened.

■ Serve apple sauce with pork.

3 cooking apples, peeled, quartered and cored 1/2 C water 10 sticks rhubarb 1/2 C sugar 1t finely-grated orange rind 100g butter, chopped 1/2 C self-raising flour 1/2 C lightly-packed brown sugar 1/4 C dessicated coconut 1/2 C rolled oats ■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Cut apples into thick slices and place in a saucepan with water.

■ Simmer for 10 minutes.

■ Wash rhubarb and chop into 5cm lengths.

■ Add rhubarb, sugar and orange rind to apple.

■ Return to the boil and simmer for 3 minutes.

■ Pour mixture into a shallow oven-proof dish.

■ Rub the butter into the flour, mix in brown sugar, coconut and rolled oats.

■ Sprinkle crumble evenly over the apple and rhubarb and bake for

■ Add apple juice and worcestershire sauce to pan.

■ Cover and simmer for 10 minutes.

■ Turn pork chops over and add sliced apples and onion, cover and simmer for further 30 minutes.

■ Serve with mashed potato and baby peas and carrots.

Hunting for bargains at the St Stephen’s fair Saturday turned on a lovely, warm, sunny autumn morning for the St Stephen’s Church Fair which was well attended by those hunting for a bargain, or to just enjoy the fun of the fair. The many stalls were well patronised, the cooks were kept busy at the sausage sizzle and the band kept everyone entertained with a variety of music. It was a very successful event.

EASY SUDOKU

Serves 5 4 medium red skinned boiling or new potatoes, washed 1 T sesame oil 1 T sesame seeds 1 t mustard seeds 2 T grated fresh ginger 1 T chilli sauce (gluten free) 2 T lemon juice or white vinegar 6-8 button mushrooms, quartered 2 spring onions, finely sliced ■ Boil, steam or microwave potatoes until tender but still firm.

Slice into bite-sized chunks.

■ Heat oil in a frying pan, and stir in sesame seeds, mustard seeds and ginger. Stir fry for 1-2 minutes.

■ Add chilli sauce and lemon juice and mix well. Add potatoes and mushrooms.

■ Remove from heat and when

cool place on a platter and sprinkle with spring onions.

Serve.

To boil potatoes: ■ Scrub or peel potatoes as required. Slice in half or evensized pieces.

■ Place in a heavy-based saucepan and cover with cold water.

Place a lid on the saucepan.

■ Bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes or until tender when tested with the point of a knife. Drain.

■ The time of cooking will depend on the size of the pieces of potato.

In brief Games gold targeted The New Zealand Women’s hockey team to compete at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games next month is spearheaded by the vastly experienced duo of captain Stacey Michelsen and Anita McLaren, who will both be competing at their third successive Commonwealth Games. Michelsen carries immense talent and experience having amassed 248 test caps for New Zealand while McLaren brings genuine firepower as the women’s all-time leading goal scorer. Tips from the top Mid Canterbury Hockey is has organised a two-day camp for local players with former German national coach Alex Feustel.

The camp, on April 15 and 16, will provide coaching for small groups, across all age and skill levels from Year 1 through to secondary school.

Feustel was assistant coach for the German women’s team from

2009 until 2010, attending the World Cup in Argentina and the London Olympics. He has also spent 10 years coaching German age group teams, including some at national level.

Mid Canterbury Hockey camp organiser Rachel Curd said the camp was all about furthering the skillset of local hockey players.

The camp will be held at the Ashburton Hockey Turf with more details to be released next week.

Curd said it was the first time Mid Canterbury Hockey had organised such an event, using the services of Sporting Edge, and it was part of the association’s commitment to coaching and development.

She hoped it would be well supported.

“We have a big focus on growing numbers in Mid Canterbury and we are still looking to send strong teams to the South Canterbury senior competition.”

Hockey held a muster day for juniors this month with plans to start some Small Sticks grades from March 27.

By RoB FoRsaith Faf du Plessis has questioned international cricket’s disciplinary approach, stunned that David Warner’s staircase rampage and Kagiso Rabada’s rowdy send-off could both be worth three demerit points.

The points resulting from Rabada’s latest misdeed have triggered a two-test ban that will force him to miss the rest of the current series, unless South Africa successfully appeal.

The express paceman was found guilty of inappropriate and deliberate physical contact with Steve Smith in Port Elizabeth, having brushed the batsman’s shoulder in a send-off.

Improver ready for action Mighty Connor has made good progress ahead of his debut on his home track at Matamata.

The well-related Sebring youngster won his latest trial last month and will make his first race day appearance in today’s Retox Sports Bar & Tokoroa Cosmopolitan Club 1200m.

“He was a colt when I first trialled him on a heavy track and he floundered in the ground,” part-owner and trainer Jacob McKay said.

“We gelded him after that.

“He was going through a growing stage so we tipped him out.

“I was pleased with his next trial at Taupo and then he won his last one.

“He’s improved again since then and I’m really happy with him.”

Mighty Connor’s pedigree features the Gr.1 Diamond Stakes (1200m) winner Dal Cielo.

“He was one of two yearlings I bought at Karaka and syndicated,” McKay said.

“The other was Gallagher.

“He ran second first-up and was then

a bit unlucky not to run in the first three at Taranaki,” McKay said.

Mighty Connor finished fifth in the Gr.3 Phoenix Park 2YO Classic (1200m) and was turned out after running sixth in the Gr.3 Reid & Harrison Slipper (1200m).

Another promising younger member of the stable is Tavisan, who is currently raced by a Queensland-based syndication company.

“His owners are Ontrack Thoroughbreds and I do their breaking-in and pretraining in New Zealand,” McKay said.

“He’s going to make a grouse three-year-old and the plan has always been that he’d go to Mick Price in Melbourne so I’ll have to talk to the owners about him.”

Tavisan has raced three times and finished fifth in the Reid & Harrison Slipper before he was unplaced in Saturday’s prestigious Gr.1 Sistema Stakes (1200m).

“He might have been only seventh, but it was still a very good run,” McKay said.

Orange has now won 24 races at Palmerston North track this season, almost all of them in the colours of fellow Cantabrian, trainer Michael House. Healy fit for England clash

By Nick Purewal Ireland insist Cian Healy is fit for the Six Nations grand slam clash with England at Twickenham.

Leinster prop Healy appeared unsteady on his feet after a heavy clash in Ireland’s 28-8 win over Scotland on Saturday that sealed a third Six Nations title in five years.

Head coach Joe Schmidt insisted after the match that Ireland had suffered no serious injuries, and now the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) have further explained the issue.

Ireland can secure just their thirdever clean sweep with victory over Eddie Jones’ England in London this weekend.

“Cian Healy suffered a stingerlike injury to the shoulder/trapezius area,” read an IRFU statement.

“He experienced some discomfort on the field and received the appropriate treatment.

“Cian will train fully this week.”

Ireland’s four-try win over Scotland, coupled with England’s 2216 defeat to France in Paris, sealed head coach Schmidt’s third Six Nations title since he has been at the helm.

Those results also sealed Ireland’s rise to second in World Rugby’s rankings, leapfrogging England, stepping back up to No.2 in the world for the first time since August 2015.

would further cement his place in the Irish annals should he now guide his side to a grand slam to stand alongside the triumphs of 1948 and 2009.

Ireland have suffered their fair share of injuries across the course of their four victories in the tournament to date, but toppling England away from home will prove a different story altogether.

Fit-again centre Garry Ringrose excelled against Scotland having finally shaken off an ankle problem picked up in January, and has suffered no ill effects from the weekend.

“There are the usual bumps and bruises that occur following a test match but the full squad of 36 players are available for selection this week,” the IRFU statement confirmed.

Meanwhile England captain Dylan Hartley is expected to be available to face Ireland at Twickenham but doubt now hovers over the fitness of Elliot Daly.

Hartley could return for the final round of the Six Nations against the newly crowned champions after missing the 22-16 defeat in France because of a tight calf that developed in training last week.

Jamie George deputised at hooker in Hartley’s absence but the Saracen failed to make an impact at the Stade de France so Hartley is poised to make an immediate comeback. - PA

The All Blacks have a new threat to ending their eight year run at the top of the World Rugby rankings.

From April to June 2018, the Department of Conservation, Geraldine District, intend to apply Feratox baits containing encapsulated cyanide within the following areas of public conservation land to control possums.

Description of Area Possum control will take place on public conservation land known as the Hakatere Conservation Park Area. Location is approx 24km NE of Mt Somers township, in the Upper Stour and Swin River catchments - being approx 7,186ha in size.

Method of Control Only ground based control operation methods will be used.

Feratox (cyanide) bait bags will be stapled to trees, stakes, fences, or in bait stations, along fringe areas within the operational area.

The pesticide used in this operation is poisonous to humans and domestic animals.

Always remember: • DO NOT touch any bait.

• WATCH CHILDREN at all times.

• DO NOT BRING DOGS into this area.

• DO NOT EAT animals from this area.

• DO NOT touch bait stations.

Observe these rules whenever you see warning signs for pesticides.

Ashburton College PE students have been among the new shooters to learn about the sport of target shooting at the Coronation range.

The Coronation Target Shooting Club is opening its doors on Sunday for people to try their hand at the gun sport.

People will be able to learn a little about the progressive club and fire a rifle at targets set up in the indoor range on West Street.

Club captain Nina McKenzie said it was a great introduction to the world of smallbore target shooting and there would be plenty of members on hand to advise and share their shooting experiences.

McKenzie said she got into the sport herself six years ago after coming along with a friend to give it a go.

Now her husband and children also shoot.

There will be three sessions during the

open day, at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. The club will also officially open its new target wall at 1pm with a small ceremony and cut a cake to acknowledge the formation of its Phoenix group for novice shooters.

McKenzie said the Phoenix group recognised the special relationship the club had with Ashburton College, which sends its Year 12 physical education students to the range for tuition and assessment as part of their NCEA Level 2 learning.

Students are taught how to safely operate a firearm.

The club is the only one in the country accredited to run the programme.

“The college programme is a massive success and it is run by club volunteers.”

McKenzie said the club had 25 registered members, but there was around 200 casual

shooters who also used the range.

The club has high quality specialist rifles members can use, or they can buy their own, she said. Members also benefited from a well-maintained facility that had been built more than 50 years ago.

Shooters aspire to the perfect score, which would be 10 inner bullseyes on 10 targets and a score of 100.10.

Most never achieve this though any score over 100 is cause for celebration.

McKenzie said the sport did not discriminate between age, gender or physical size and the only limiter was eyesight.

Coronation also offered excellent coaching.

“It is a very precise, clinical sport requiring a lot of technique and a lot of practice and it is really important to have your

head game right to be successful.”

Coronation runs its club nights on a Monday but the range is in use many nights a week by members working on their skills.

Members compete against themselves and in district and national postal shoots; many have gone on to represent Mid Canterbury at South Island and New Zealand level.

McKenzie said everyone was welcome on Sunday, but those hoping to fire a rifle needed to be 12 years and older.

The rifles are low calibre, so there is no recoil, unlike hunting or other rifles.

The new target wall replaces the original heavy steel catchment wall on the building and has been replaced with the help of grants from the Lion Foundation and local Rotary club.
