Ashburton has received almost one month’s rainfall in the past three days.

As wet weather and flooding has hounded some areas of the country, a steady consistency has ensured Mid Canterbury has escaped relatively unscathed.

There has nevertheless been high rainfall in the district, with the MetService recording 25.4 millimetres falling on Sunday at its Ashburton airport automated weather station, as well as 17.2mm to 4pm yesterday and 10.8mm on Saturday.

The total of 53.4mm is only 9mm shy of the long-term average rainfall for the site in the month of March, of 62mm.

Sunday was particularly wet in the town, with 29mm measured at the Niwa weather station in the Ashburton Domain. Methven was even wetter, receiving 29.8mm.

Playcentres combine to show their stuff The inaugural Playcentre Play Café has been a hit.

All playcentres from around the region, apart from Mayfield, were present, showing off what playcentre is all about.

Water play, gloop, play dough, a dress-up area, family corner and an under-two area, were all there to provide an example to children and parents.

The event was held as part of Playcentre Awareness Week to go with a week of activities at different centres across the region.

“It is great to see so many people down here,” said Nicola Walker, from the Mid Canterbury Playcentre Association.

“It was nice to see grandparents and dads as well.

“Our focus is on educating the parents as much as educating the children.”

Pendarves farmer spots rare kotuku

A Pendarves farmer spotted a rare and mythical white heron on his property late last week.

The man, who declined to be named, said he saw it on Thursday afternoon, from a distance of 100m, and it was twice the size of a blue heron.

As he attempted to photograph the bird, the kotuku quickly flew into a neighbouring property.

“I’ve never seen a white heron like that,” he said. “I know what I was looking at and it was definitely a heron.

“They’re such a rarity, I can’t imagine I’m the only one who saw it.”

He rang his neighbour, who said

they return annually and it could be the same bird he had seen in the past.

“It’s the first time I have seen one down here,” he said.

The graceful bird has long, slender legs and a long, thin S-shaped neck, which has a distinct kink when flying.

Department of Conservation Geraldine district office supervisor, Chris Coulter, pointed the Guardian in the direction of the DOC website, which stated that “after breeding, the birds disperse widely and may be seen at coastal freshwater wetlands or estuaries throughout the country”.

“This is a pretty accurate statement as we have them here in Geraldine from time to time in the Waihi River,”

The kotuku is common in Australia, the South Pacific and Asia, and in New Zealand, it only breeds near Whataroa, South Westland, between September and January.

By 1941 there were only four nests in existence and so the Waitangiroto site was declared a reserve and wildlife refuge and is patrolled at breeding time. A permanent population of about 100 to 120 birds now thrive.

As a symbol of things both beautiful and rare, the kotuku occupied an important place in Maori myth and folklore, and to compare a visitor to a kotuku was a compliment of the highest order.

Got any old kayaks hanging around?

Do you have a dusty old kayak or paddle in the shed? Why not give the Ashburton College kayak club a bit of hand?

The newly-formed club received a warm welcome from students, with more than 50 signing up, but it has struck a bit of a problem.

“We only have access to four kayaks at the moment,” said organising teacher, Anna Eade.

“Until we are able to get more funding to purchase gear, we are relying on what we have ... which is why we are asking people if they have any gear they can lend us.”

Due to the lack of equipment, only eight are able to attend the weekly pool sessions and only spend half of the session in a kayak.

Over the winter months, the

students will be refining their skills in the sport of canoe polo.

“It is kind of like basketball in a kayak,” Eade said.

“There is a league in Christchurch that doesn’t have a pool they can use, and we have a pool we can use, but don’t have any gear, so the hope is that we can share things around and compete in the league.”

Once the summer months come around again, the students will be taking to the waters of local rivers to experience white water kayaking.

“The rivers in the local area are great for beginners,” Eade said.

The club is looking for paddles and boats.

Neoprene spray-skirts and lifejackets are important as well, but extra care has to be taken as the spray-skirts can expire and lifejackets can lose their buoyancy.

A month of rain in 3 days From P1 The rain is welcome in gardens and on many farms. It has come after a dry period with Ashburton having only received two thirds of its average rainfall for the year so far earlier this month.

However, for some farmers who still have late cereals and other crops to harvest, it is a nuisance.

Rain is expected to clear by late afternoon today and New Zealand as a whole is expected to experience much calmer conditions as high pressure builds over the country this week.

said as the Tasman tempest, which caused flooding in the North Island would be replaced by the high pressure system, there would be long stretches of dry weather and sunshine with temperatures near or above average.

Noll said climate change was increasing the likelihood of such extreme rainfall events as had happened in the North Island.

“While no one weather event is caused by climate change … research suggests that there will be up to 8 per cent more intense rain for every one degree of warming,” he said.

Rain, hail, sleet, snow or sunshine, the job always gets done.

Ashburton Domain staff undertake readings at the domain’s Niwa manual weather station 9am each day.

And it’s been done for more than 100 years, as long as the station has been in existence.

Staff write down wind, rain and humidity readings, recording them in a field book, which is posted by snail mail to Niwa at the end of each month.

Parks and open spaces manager David Askin said it was valu-

able information which became part of national and local records.

Niwa paid the Ashburton District Council a small sum to ensure the readings were undertaken.

“It’s very much an historic weather site,” Askin said.

Wind was measured in the format of the Beaufort wind scale, which meant the staff member had to make their own observations and allocate a number on the scale, which ranged from one for dead calm to 12 for a hurricane.

A 12 had never been recorded, but an 11, for violent storm, had been, in the 1974 Canterbury

windstorm.

Big snowstorms, such as that in 2006 which brought Ashburton to a standstill, meant digging out and measuring the depth of snow.

Niwa senior media adviser Susan Pepperell said scientists valued such continuous manual observations.

The NIWA network of “weather volunteers” undertaking daily readings once numbered about 1500. But a combination of people moving and an increasing number of automated stations had seen the numbers drop to about 400.

Ashburton District Court news The following people appeared before Judge Tony Couch in the Ashburton District Court yesterday: Outstanding fines were in the spotlight when Wade Joseph Turner appeared to answer a domestic assault charge in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

After admitting the charge, Turner’s lawyer Paul Bradford described his client’s $11,500 worth of outstanding fines, mostly incurred as a result of traffic infringements, as “rats and mice”.

“It’s more than rats and mice it’s more like a plague of rodents,” Judge Couch countered.

“You are out of control with motor vehicles, this is way over the top.”

He sentenced Turner to 10 months’ supervision to include counselling as directed by Corrections Services.

William John Langdon, of Ashburton, claimed not to know his driver’s licence was suspended when he was caught behind the wheel in Christchurch in December and racked up a driving while suspended charge. However, his excuse didn’t wash with Judge Couch when Langdon appeared in court yesterday. Neither did his

offer to up his fines repayments from $25 to $50 per week.

“If you could be paying $50, you should be doing it,” Judge Couch said.

Langdon’s $4000 worth of outstanding fines were largely the result of traffic infringements incurred for breaching the conditions of his learner licence.

Langdon was convicted, disqualified from driving for six months, fined $300, and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

Kiahn Taine Taylor-Edwards and a co-offender stole a “significant” amount of property from a house, but later returned to the address to apologise and return some of the items taken. Judge Couch called their actions “curious”.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen it before,” he said.

Yesterday the 17-year-old admitted a representative charge of dishonestly using a document, but denied possessing instruments suitable for vehicle conversion. He had previously admitted the burglary charge.

He will return to court for sentencing on the guilty pleas on April 24 and again three days later for a case review hearing on the remaining matter.

Alexander Roa, 26, of Hampstead, was convicted on a drink driving charge.

Roa was found to be driving with an excess blood alcohol level of 128 milligrams per 100 millilitres. He was disqualified from driving for six months, fined $600 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

Owen Keith Guthrie, 29, of Dunsandel, admitted assaulting a police officer. He was convicted and remanded on bail for sentencing on April 24.

Simon David McKenzie, 36, of Christchurch, denied charges of trespassing and dishonestly taking a motor vehicle. He was remanded on bail pending a case review hearing on April 27.

David Kaisa, of Netherby, admitted a charge of assault. He was convicted and remanded on bail for sentencing on April 24, to allow time for a restorative justice

Apisalome Galevu, of Hinds, admitted assaulting a woman. He was convicted and remanded on bail for sentencing on April 24.

Judge Couch ordered the presentence report include appendices for electronically monitored sentencing options.

Marseilles Wiki, 28, of Hampstead, was to have been sentenced on a charge of dangerous driving causing injury, however it was delayed to allow her time to complete a defensive driving course. She will return to court on April 24.

Daniel James Anderson, 28, of Ashburton, admitted three counts of fraud. He was convicted and remanded on bail for sentencing on April 24.

Alyssandra Fergusson-Posthuma, 20, of Ashburton, was con-

victed and ordered to come up for sentence if called within 12 months on a charge of breaching prison release conditions.

Alizter Kolya Watson, 27, of Hampstead, smashed the window of the Rakaia Four Square store but failed in his attempt to break into the cigarette cabinet.

As a result he was sentenced to 120 hours of community work and ordered to make reparations of $610.

Alex Fa’amausili, 21, of Allenton, will be sentenced on two counts of assault with intent to injure on April 24.

Jayden James McCormick, 39, of Rakaia, pleaded guilty to charges of theft and obtaining by deception. He was convicted and remanded on bail for sentencing on April 24. A presentence report including options for electronically monitored sentences was requested. Judge Couch recommended McCormick make good the $4083 in reparations prior to that date.

Arrest warrants were issued for: Natasha Christine Ranson, Shonna Marie Hanara, Tavita Pahula and Rowan John Robinson.

Auckland residents begin the clean-up Residents in the New Lynn, Titirangi, Glen Eden and neighbouring areas were yesterday busy cleaning out garages and their homes following devastating floods over the weekend.

Tino Antonio, 38, was at his family’s home on Parker Ave yesterday when the rainwater they thought would start to recede only began to get higher and higher.

The family house is a two-storey building.

Downstairs was left completely covered and furniture was ruined.

He said he and other family members quickly checked their neighbours to make sure everyone was okay.

His neighbour, Warren Crowe, 57, was on the phone to the insurance company when the Herald arrived.

He had been on there for about 40 minutes.

“They said they’re getting a lot of calls.”

Crowe did not realise how heavy the rain was until he

looked outside and thought the fence had disappeared.

“It was completely covered – you couldn’t see the fence.

“I’d seen [the water] coming through but didn’t think it would come up that high.”

A dirty outline around his home indicated where the heavy rains had come up to.

His black car sitting in the carport had no chance and was now completely written off, he said.

“The car’s full with water, the boot’s full of water and ... probably the petrol tank.”

Things weren’t any better inside, with soaked carpet and entertainment and other furniture heavily damaged.

“The water was coming through the hall, so I threw down some towels – that didn’t work.”

Crowe pointed to his shirt – which says “Bugger”.

“Yeah, well I put it on last night and, well, yeah. Sums it up.”

Up the road in Titirangi, residents were also sweeping floors and pulling up ruined bits of

carpet and felt.

Russell Geddes, 50, said yesterday’s heavy rains had been particularly damaging; washing through the basement and flooding the backyard.

“It’s like walking on a sponge.”

He acknowledged their family was one of the lucky ones as they had insurance and were going to be okay.

But that still did not help how upsetting the ordeal had been.

“It is a bit heartbreaking.

“But what do you do? You just get on with it.”

Geddes said an elderly couple nearby had had to deal with two days of flash flooding on their property, after the lid connecting to a stormwater pipe at the top of their driveway popped up.

Heavy rains burst the heavy lid off on Friday evening and again yesterday, even after neighbours and the couple’s grandson weighed it down with a heavy bit of concrete.

The couple’s downstairs garage area was flooded about ankle-deep.

Sinkhole cause for concern A section of a main New Lynn street remained cordoned off yesterday morning with parts of a footpath a giant gaping hole with an impassable sheer drop.

Auckland Council officials were out in force yesterday inspecting the destruction after hours of torrential rain led to widespread flash floods across West Auckland Sunday.

A building left teetering perilously close to a footpath that is now a gaping sinkhole on New Lynn’s main street is a key area of concern.

The civil defence head of emergency management operations, Aaron Davis, said that yesterday teams were inspecting the ruined infrastructure before people were

allowed back inside homes and businesses.

At least 12 residents from a set of flats in Kelston were forced out of their complex after the first storey was flooded and many others had no option but to spend the night away from waterlogged properties.

Photos of the damage showed the ground completely washed away leaving the shop’s foundations exposed.

The huge hole, which has opened up where there was once a footpath, has also left a number of once-buried pipes open to the elements.

A council spokeswoman said officials were still investigating the exact cause.

Immigrants flee USA Frightened immigrants are creeping into Canada through a quiet border town in northeast New York to escape Donald Trump.

The families are fleeing through the town of Champlain which shares a border with Quebec.

They make their crossing on Roxham Road which leads them directly towards the village of Hemmingford and in to the path of Royal Canadian Mounted Police officers who take them to immigration offices where they can apply for asylum.

Since Donald Trump tried to implement a controversial travel ban stopping citizens from Muslim majority countries from entering the US, foot traffic on the road has increased.

Residents of Champlain told The New York Times how some families were sneaking over the illegal crossing in the middle of the night to avoid being caught.

“I’m not OK with it but I definitely can’t blame them,” Matthew Turner, who lives on Roxham Road, said.

Earlier this month, families claiming to be from Turkey were pictured being arrested after making the crossing at Roxham Road.

They were met sympathetically by police officers, one of whom was seen carrying a baby in a car seat while its mother pleaded with them.

They carried the few belongings they could manage for the journey.

Crossing illegally at Roxham Road gives the families a quicker chance of settling in Canada.

It is illegal for any migrant to apply for asylum at the dozens of official border crossings. If they show up hoping for the best, they are turned back to

‘I’m not Harry’s dad’ Princess Diana’s former lover James Hewitt has spoken out about their affair, denying long-standing rumours he could have been Prince Harry’s father. The former cavalry officer said speculation had persisted because “it sells papers”. Diana confessed in a BBC Panorama programme in 1995 that the pair had had an affair. She and Prince Charles separated in 1992, divorcing four years later. In an interview with Channel Seven’s Sunday Night in Australia, the former Life Guards officer was asked: “Are you Harry’s father?”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says refugees are welcome in his country. stay in the US. But if they cross illegally, they are arrested on Canadian soil.

Police then have no choice but to allow them to make a refugee claim, process them and release them.

With this logic in mind, the immigrants deliberately cross despite warnings from Canadian officers not to when they reach the border.

Roxham Road is one of the holes which led officials to liken the border to a block of Swiss Cheese. There are similar crossings happening in Vermont where families ditched their brand new cars and walked across the border last month.

They arrived in Stanstead, Canada, and went for pizza before being arrested.

Their hopes are shared by dozens of other migrants being housed by a charity in Buf-

falo.

Vive La Casa looks after the migrants while they wait for appointments with Canadian immigration agencies.

It is operated by the Christian charity Jericho Road Community Health Center.

Its occupants enter the US legally, often on student visa, and go there to apply for asylum when their legal stay is coming to an end.

They can apply for asylum in the US but the charity mostly helps them settle in Canada.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has shared his unequivocal openness to refugees since Trump began adjusting immigration laws.

When the first failed ban was temporarily implemented in January, Trudeau said all refugees ‘regardless of your faith’ were welcome in his country.

The first temporarily stopped citizens from seven

Muslim majority nations from entering the US even if they had been granted a visa or green card.

It sparked hysteria across the country and abroad.

Protests erupted outside JFK airport as the affected citizens were questioned or detained, and others found themselves sent back to where they had come from on deportation flights.

Swift action from several federal judges stamped it out.

Trump, outraged by the challenge, vowed to fight back in court but retreated.

Instead he has put forward a revised plan which is yet to be signed.

It drops Iraq from the list of affected countries and replaces an indefinite ban on Syrian refugees with a 120 day suspension.

It also exempts visa and green card holders.

Hitler painting on show An exhibition about art and madness in northern Italy will feature a painting by Adolf Hitler, despite the late German dictator’s work being far from a masterpiece, organisers say. “In art history ... there have been many artists whose minds were racked by torment, who expressed themselves in a visionary and hallucinated language,” said notoriously foul-mouthed art critic and TV personality Vittorio Sgarbi, who curated the exhibition titled Museum of Madness. Sgarbi said Hitler’s small oil painting is on loan by a private German collector and has never been exhibited before.

Kidnap victim reveals horrific details A woman who was kidnapped and raped as a child has spoken of the horrific night she was snatched from her bedroom and how she tried to help police find her attacker by scribbling notes from her hospital bed.

Jennifer Schuett was only eight years old when she was abducted by a stranger from her home in Dickinson, Texas in August 1990 before being strangled and violently raped.

The little girl’s attacker, Dennis Earl Bradford, slit her throat and left her for dead in a field where she laid naked, bleeding and unable to move until children found her some 14 hours later.

Now 27 years later, Schuett

has relived the traumatic abduction for an episode of CBS 48 Hours.

“He held a knife to my throat and said: ‘Am I scaring you, little girl? Am I scaring you?’

Then he choked me as hard as he could.

“I blacked out for a while,” Schuett said.

“I woke up to him dragging me by my ankles. He dropped my legs. I realised I couldn’t scream and I couldn’t figure out why.

“I had just enough strength to throw my right hand on top of my neck. That’s when I felt this gaping wound.”

When Schuett woke up in the field her attacker was gone, but she couldn’t move or even

scream for help. She was rescued hours later after children playing in the field found her.

Despite being unable to speak as she recovered in hospital from her horrific injuries, Schuett desperately tried to answer police questions about the man who attacked her.

48 Hours obtained copies of

the notes she scribbled to investigators as she recalled the night of the attack.

The little girl told police her attacker’s name was Dennis and helped police create a sketch of the suspect with her detailed description.

Despite the details she provided detectives, two decades passed before improved DNA testing linked Bradford to the attack.

Bradford was found in September 2009 and his driver’s licence photo was practically identical to the attacker Schuett had described to police.

Bradford killed himself in prison in May 2010 before he could stand trial.

Sally Ridge single again After five years together, real estate agent and lady about town Sally Ridge has called it off with business partner and lover Warren Fenning. According to Woman’s Day the Bayley’s real estate agents have ended their half-decade long relationship but continue to work together. According to insiders, “they’re doing their best to keep things friendly”.

The couple have been on and off for the last few months but the news has come as a shock to their close friends. Both Sally and Warren appeared together on the cover of Ponsonby News at the end of last year celebrating their foray into selling real estate for Bayleys.

The death was announced yesterday by the Roosevelt Hospital in Guatemala’s capital. The fire began when mattresses were set ablaze during a protest by residents at the overcrowded youth shelter.

New York braces for big snow The Northeast of the United States is bracing for winter’s last hurrah – a blizzard expected to sweep the New York region starting today with possibly the season’s biggest snowstorm dumping up to 50cm on Central Park.

The National Weather Service issued a blizzard watch yesterday for coastal regions including New York City and surrounding areas of Long Island, Westchester

County and Connecticut.

A winter storm watch was in effect for a larger area of the Northeast: New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New England.

In New York City, forecasters said the first snow is expected today with up to 10cm falling by dawn. Heavy snow the rest of the day could pile 25cm to 36cm more of white stuff, with sustained winds of about 48km and

wind gusts of up to 80.5km.

“This would certainly be the biggest snowstorm of the 2017 winter season in New York City,” said Faye Barthold, a weather service meteorologist based on Long Island.

On Long Island, a snowfall of 30cm to 46cm was forecast along with equally strong winds and visibility of 400m or less.

Cuomo said yesterday the New York State Emergency Operations Centre will be activated, with stockpiles of sandbags, generators and pumps at the ready, as well as snow-removal vehicles and salt spreaders.

The New York City Department of Sanitation is taking similar action and also notifying additional workers to supplement staff if needed.

Kiwi pre-loaders up with the world’s best

By Jamie morton Kiwis have been revealed among the most prolific pre-loaders in the world when it comes to drinking – prompting a call for action by a leading alcohol researcher.

The practice of pre-drinking – drinking at home before a night out – was prolific across the 25 nations the study covered, but New Zealand’s rates were especially high, showing an estimated 78.7 per cent of 1560 Kiwis surveyed pre-loaded.

That figure was behind only Ireland (85.4 per cent of 1883 respondents), Norway (80.5 per cent of 174) and Canada (80.2 per cent of 962), and ahead of Australia (64.1 per cent of 1855), the United States (65 per cent of 3878) and the UK (75.3 per cent of 4763).

The research, published yesterday by Swiss and Australian researchers in the journal Drug and Alcohol Review, found that countries with higher levels of drinking in general – New Zealand’s prevalence of current drinkers

was estimated at 79.5 per cent – also had a higher percentage of pre-drinkers as a result.

The authors said this suggested pre-drinking was affected by the same cultural tendency to drink that underpinned alcohol use in the general population.

The findings weren’t surprising to alcohol researcher Dr Nicki Jackson, executive director of Alcohol Healthwatch.

“New Zealand has one of the highest prevalences of predrinking behaviour – over three

quarters of people between the ages of 35 – which is aligned to the prevalence that we have from smaller studies.”

Jackson said a big factor was the price difference between alcohol bought on-licence and offlicence.

“In New Zealand, where we have a high density of off-licence outlets, we know from research that where we have increased competition for off-licences then the prices come down and that increases opportunities to

purchase alcohol at a very low price.

“And we are talking about buying [ready-to-drink] and spiritsbased drink for less than $2 each; and of course, young people who are very price-sensitive will often go for the cheapest option.”

Jackson believed New Zealand had to take a stand to increase the price of alcohol, especially within off-licence premises.

Waikato Hospital Emergency Department clinical director Dr John Bonning said while only one New Zealand hospital collected data on where over-intoxicated patients had purchased their alcohol, pre-loading was contributing to a growing problem for front-line doctors.

Binge-drinking appeared to be part of the culture of Australia and New Zealand, said Bonning, chairman of the NZ Faculty of the Australasian College of Emergency Medicine.

“On a given Saturday night, one in four people in EDs around the entire country are there as a result of alcohol,” he said.

In a horrifying moment at least nine fairground revellers were injured including one child when a swing ride crashed to the ground.

The ride was at a festival in Xihe county, in northwest China’s Gansu Province. The top frame, carrying suspended chairs hanging by chains, dropped without warning, slamming its passengers onto the ground. The owners of the facilities were taken in by the police for questioning.

Man ate his girlfriend A southern Indiana man accused of killing his former girlfriend and eating parts of her body in 2014 will undergo psychiatric evaluations, despite his insistence that he’s competent for trial.

Defence lawyers said Joseph Oberhansley, 35, can’t consult with them or understand court proceedings.

According to court documents, Oberhansley told police he broke into Blanton’s Jeffersonville home, on September 11, 2014, killed her, then ate her heart and parts of her brain and lung.

Drought in Queensland They don’t call it the Sunshine State for nothing, with the latest declarations revealing that almost 90 per cent of Queensland is now in drought. Fraser Coast, North Burnett, Cherbourg, Gympie, Somerset and Banana were added to the list of shires in drought, leaving a 87.47 per cent of the state officially declared as drought-stricken. AgForce general president Grant Maudsley said conditions were unlikely to improve in the near future with below average rainfall expected for March combined with hot temperatures.

‘Nazism alive in the west’ Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan intensified his dispute with European nations yesterday, claiming that “Nazism is alive in the West” after two of his ministers were prevented from campaigning in the Netherlands and promising that the Dutch would “pay the price” for their unusual action.

While Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte worked to contain the diplomatic damage, Erdogan made it clear that Turkey would not be easily appeased.

reg Roadley’s trek across the Arctic Circle is now well under way as he competes in one of the “toughest, coldest, windiest ultra-distance footraces on the planet”.

At 6am on Saturday, the Mid Canterbury dairy farmer and extreme runner, set off on the 560km mammoth challenge.

The 350-mile version of the 6633 Arctic Ultra, of which Greg is partaking, continues to the banks of the Arctic Ocean at Tuktoyaktuk.

Quite frankly, it looks and sounds brutal.

According to the official information, competitors carry or pull sleds enclosing all their provisions, including food, cooking items, clothing, sleeping kit and safety gear.

They even say the event is, without doubt, in the most extreme of environments possible, renowned for both its severe cold and high winds.

It’s amazing what the human mind and body can achieve when determination sets in.

But it also takes a special kind of a person to summon that determination in the first place.

Greg is part of a new wave of endurance athletes, stepping up for wild and wonderful challenges – the more extreme, the better.

But for our adventurer, stepping outside of his comfort zone to see what his body is capable of, is nothing new.

He has competed three times in the gruelling one-day Coast to Coast and last year ran six marathons in six days in the Sahara Desert, as part of the Marathon des Sables.

Yet, his current project comes with unique challenges of its own.

This is the race where temperatures plummet to -50°C, where frostbite is a real threat, where Hurricane Alley is a reality and athletes find themselves walking alongside mighty – and terrifying – ice road truckers.

Whether it’s desert-dry heat, rugged conditions, or freezing beyond belief, Greg is both an inspiration and a marvel.

He’s certainly up for a challenge and he doesn’t pick anything for the faint of heart.

We’ve been asking if you think enough is being done to control unsecured dogs in the Ashburton area.

To get some perspective, we spoke with John Keeley for the SPCA’s point of view, who commented they are always happy to educate people on animal welfare and to follow up if the welfare of an animal is in question. However, Ashburton’s SPCA is run completely by volunteers and must act within the law of the Animal Welfare Act of 1999, which really controls what they can and cannot do. Their main objective is sick or injured animals only. Roaming dogs are more the domain of the Ashburton District Council, who we are seeking comment from.

How can we better support the SPCA? Is education the answer? Or is fining dog owners breaching bylaws the only way to control the matter?

Kirsten The problem we have, is that the people that own these dogs, are the ones that don’t care or don’t bother to do anything with their dogs. You still get the odd well looked after dog that escapes from houses, usually when others have left gates open etc. The dogs that wander and cause havoc have owners that basically just do not give a s**t about what their dog is doing, chewing, scaring etc. And sure, we can fine them, but yup, they won’t pay the fine, it will be added on top of their other fines they haven’t paid. These people just don’t care. So you end up fining the “good” owners for a slip up now and then and the ones that actually cause all the drama, get away with it all. The good owners care that their dog has gotten out and chased a cat or whatever.

And they will pay the fine. However, what do the council do about the ones that don’t pay and their dog still gets out and causes grief around the neighbour(hood)?

Aleisha Educate, communicate, investigate, support and follow through. Educate people how to handle these situations. If there’s a fire we all know to get down get low and get out. If there’s a loose dog we need to educate people how to approach this potentially dangerous situation. Kids to not pat stray dogs. Do we run? Do we stay still? Is there a number to call? Do we take it to our house or leave it? Educate!! Create a support system and take complaints seriously. Communicate and investigate, it can’t be that hard to figure out if the owners are bad or if the dogs are dangerous. If they don’t comply take the dog off them until they pay/build fence/buy muzzle. Get support of the police and create a good team of people to be doing this all day everyday if it’s becoming a big problem. I’ve been chased into my home by a stray dog, avoided walking my dog past properties of some that are aggressive, made complaints that have been ignored. Today I had a stray dog up my driveway disrupting my dogs.

Mudfish – a survival story R

ecently I spent five days in Canterbury experiencing what makes the area one of the agricultural and social powerhouses of New Zealand.

Yes, this region has many challenges that come with that tag on top of dealing with the rebuild of its major city following the two earthquakes.

My first two days were spent with colleagues from FMG and New Zealand Police presenting Rural Crime Prevention Workshops around the region. This was a great opportunity to share our programme with local communities and gather feedback on the security issues they were encountering.

Following this I joined my Federated Farmers’ board members in South Canterbury where we visited a number of businesses and enterprises before having our board meeting. The visits included a large robot indoor dairy business, the Wainono lagoon, the Hunter Downs Irrigation project, South Pacific Sera, Heartland Chips, Farmers Mill and the Opuha Dam Scheme.

These businesses and projects all demonstrated what had been achieved by local people for the benefit of local communities,

keeping industry, jobs and monetary returns in the local region.

There was one project we visited that really resonated with us all – the St Andrews mudfish restoration project.

At St Andrews we found a small community, led by a school and a farmer, incorporating larger regional agencies to restore an area of habitat where the threatened Canterbury mudfish lives.

The project was presented to the group by students who had been involved from day one and the passion and knowledge of the project and mudfish they imparted was impressive.

The excitement evident in these students as they explained the project, showed us live mudfish they had netted for us to view and the level of knowledge instantly gave visitors the confidence that this project was here

to stay and would be successful.

So what is a Canterbury mudfish?

A mudfish is a member of the galaxiid family, the same family as whitebait, only mudfish prefer bogs, soggy wetlands and sluggish streams rather than fastflowing, clear streams.

The mudfish will grow to about 12 centimetres and have the ability to survive in moist mud for a period of short-term drought.

Their main predators are trout and eels and they need aquatic plant life to provide shelter and to lay their eggs on.

Years of draining land has severely reduced their habitat across the Canterbury Plains but at St Andrews they’re busy raising a population of mudfish.

A local farmer learned of the plight of the mudfish on his recently-acquired farm and decided he wanted to do more to protect them.

He teamed up with the Working Waters Trust, who in turn got the St Andrews Primary School involved, and soon there was a group keen to run with the project.

From that day drains and wetland have been fenced, a land runoff collection pond created

and 15 new ponds formed within the wetland.

A highlight of 2015 was the discovery that the mudfish were self-populating the new ponds, slithering through the damp undergrowth from the original ponds and drains.

As the population grows at each population assessment, the excitement and satisfaction of a job well done also increases.

Success builds success and this project continues to inspire and motivate those involved to do more.

Hopefully similar projects may spring up throughout Canterbury to save the other known habitats of the mudfish.

One of the challenges is to know they exist because until one looks closely they will go unnoticed.

House prices firm in February Median house prices firmed slightly across New Zealand during February with the regions outpacing the nation’s largest city of Auckland, according to the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand.

The national median house price increased to $495,000 in February, up 1 per cent from January and 10 per cent higher on the year.

Outside Auckland, the median price rose 7.3 per cent from a year earlier, while in Auckland - where prices have skyrocketed up until recently – it was up 6.7 per cent.

The number of sales in February was 6253, down 14 per cent from a year earlier.

Record low interest rates and record high net migration continue to underpin the nation’s hot property market but tighter restrictions for highly-leveraged lending and having an impact, Reinz said in a statement.

Concern about New Zealand’s bubbling housing market have prompted policymakers at the Reserve Bank to introduce a series of curbs on mortgage lending and

“we hear anecdotally that LVRs are having an effect and banks are reducing lending, becoming more selective about who they lend to, what properties they will lend on and the terms,” said Reinz chief executive Bindi Norwell.

“The Otago market remains robust with another record median price recorded this month.

The demand from investors has

a year earlier but slipped 0.6 per cent versus January while in the capital city of Wellington the median price increased 16 per cent to $520,750.

“Auckland is a mixed picture: there is something in the market for buyers and sellers.

“Compared to the same time last year, median prices have increased, inventory has increased and volumes have decreased,” said Norwell.

Across New Zealand, the total value of residential sales including sections was $4 billion in February versus $4.2 billion a year earlier and $2.7 billion in January.

In the 12 months to February, the total value of residential sales was $58 billion.

The number of homes that sold for more than $1 million rose by 5 per cent on the year, accounting for 11 per cent of all dwellings sold.

In comparison, the number of properties sold for under $400,000 fell 26 per cent versus the same month a year earlier.

Trade Minister Todd McClay is in Chile for the first combined meeting of Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) countries following the United States’ withdrawal from the agreement.

He says he welcomes the opportunity to sit down with other TPP ministers to take stock and believes the TPP continues to offer value as a common set of rules across the Asia-Pacific region.

“It is clear our partners remain committed to the benefits high quality trade agreements pro-

vide,” Mr McClay says. Mr McClay will also meet with members of the Pacific Alliance and a number of other Asia-Pacific countries discuss regional trade issues.

During the weekend McClay released a video saying New Zealand will be the first cab off the rank along with Australia in being able to negotiate a free trade agreement with the UK after it exits the EU. He made the statement after meetings in London.

Non-profit sector big business While New Zealand non-profits are big business, generating $20 billion annually, there are also too many of them and some should merge, the first in-depth study of the sector has found.

Released yesterday, JBWere’s New Zealand Cause Report tracked the sector’s growth since 2004.

Operating in education, healthcare, arts, sports and the protection of animals among many other areas, JBWere New Zealand head Craig Patrick said non-profits were “crucial to the country’s future prosperity and wellbeing”.

He said New Zealand had 27,380 non-profits or one group per 170 Kiwis. Since 2010, there had been an average of 2.5 charities set up each business day.

This compared to the US where there was one non-profit for every 339 Americans and Australia

where there was one group for every 422 Aussies.

Mr Patrick said it was great Kiwis were passionate about making a difference, but worried some may burn out.

“Considering the governance obligations from board members and the sheer number of people required, we’re concerned that this very large number of organisations will create a burden on their supporters and volunteers,” he said.

“Looking ahead, we think that more collaboration and mergers could be part of the solution.”

Mr Patrick said the report also suggested non-profits should not always run tight margins and consider using surpluses to fund innovation and creative thinking.

“Where, for example, are the Googles in the not-for-profit sector?” he said.

With $60b in assets, non-profits could also consider consolidating their resources.

He questioned whether universities in the digital age will need their grand and expensive campuses when many studies will be conducted online.

Graeme Dingle, co-founder of the youth development group Graeme Dingle Foundation, also praised the report for emphasising a shift from non-profits operating in isolation to increasingly setting up “shared-value partnerships” with business.

More ribbons for the woolshed Fined over Mayfield stud sheep breeders Norm and Margaret Carr collected a few more ribbons to hang in the woolshed following a successful outing at the Mayfield A&P Show at the weekend.

The Carrs, whose suffolk rams are bought by sheep farmers all over the country, won supreme sheep of the show and champion suffolk ram.

They also won supreme meat breed.

Sheep from their Omagh Stud, established in 1976, also won a fistful of other ribbons.

The Carrs have downsized their operation over the past few years, to make way for dairying, but still host an on-farm ram sale annually where there is strong demand for their suffolk genes.

Margaret said the couple had been regulars at the Mayfield show for 40 years and had collected a few ribbons in that time.

The 2017 haul had to be dried out over chairs in the kitchen because of rain on showday that kept a few visitors away.

The most prized ribbons will be hung in the woolshed, alongside champions’ ribbons from a host of other shows, including prestigious Miss Canterbury ribbons from the Canterbury A&P Show.

The couple have cut back their show programme these days and attend Mayfield, Ashburton, Canterbury and Ellesmere events.

Environment Canterbury has prosecuted a contract milking company and a dairy farm owner for allowing 136,000 litres of effluent to overflow from an effluent pond and onto a paddock.

Mairangi Dairies Limited operates a 1350-herd dairy farm near Rangiora.

It appeared in the Christchurch District Court in January and pleaded guilty to discharging dairy effluent from a transfer system onto a paddock at 91 Boundary Road between March 23 and 30 last year.

A&H Dairies Limited – the milking contractor on the farm – also pleaded guilty to the same charge.

The court imposed fines of $29,000 and costs against each company.

Judge Jackson said both companies were responsible for the maintenance of the transfer sump and stone trap and were “equally culpable” for the malfunctioning system.

The judge said a lack of clear communication between the dairy farm owners and the milking contractor about the state of the stone trap and sump was also a factor.

“The defendants each say the other was responsible for the maintenance. In the meantime, the system failed.

“While they were standing back failing to take responsibility this unnecessary discharge occurred.

That is an unacceptable deferral of responsibility,” the judge said.

MARKET REPORT Dairy At last some days of steady rain to start the autumn pasture revival – so important for winter supplies and a successful start to next spring.

While few high volumes of rain have fallen in the province, unlike up north the amounts will be well utilised by pasture plants and brassicas desperate for moisture.

Rotational grazing lengths are slowly being extended and N applications will be used to boost feed, especially now it has rained.

The widespread rain that has covered nearly all the country will be a boost for milk flows and production forecasts could now be ahead of earlier estimates.

The market believes there is surplus product available and reflected that at last week’s auction with prices dropping 6.4 per cent for the basket of milk commodities.

Worryingly it was powders that fell the most, whole milk dropping 12.4 per cent, and worse still, skim milk suffering a 15.5 per cent fall, on the back of growing unsold stocks of EU product. This has put a dent in the confidence to all in the dairy sector, and bank analysts, lead by the normally optimistic ASB, made big adjustments backwards to this year’s milk forecast.

Forest and Bird have pulled out of the Water Forum but the Government still believes in irrigation for agriculture as they support the Hunter Downs water scheme, which moves to the next stage of development.

However, a reduction in the environmental footprint of intensive farming is happening, lead by the Lincoln University Dairy Farm, which has shown good profits and production can be achieved with a lower stocking rate.

Such sweet nostalgia

V

isitors to the museum lately will have noticed magnets and key rings in the shape of classic New Zealand lollies for sale at our front desk counter.

Colourful and varied, they have been attracting a lot of interest as many people recall similar lollies from their own childhood.

They have proved popular, especially with less-young visitors, who, like me, can recall going to the dairy and asking for a ‘mixture’.

This mixed selection of sweets typically ranged from 10 cents to a very extravagant dollar.

Many will remember paying in pence, and getting several lollies for 1p or later, one cent.

The museum’s mixture could be seen as a snapshot of Kiwi culture.

We have jet planes, wine gums, spearmint leaves and milk bottles, alongside eskimos (a term no longer acceptable), plus chocolate fish and pineapple lumps.

We even have a jaffa thrown in for good measure.

More sweets Lollies I remember that aren’t in our mixture were small pink things called smokers – rather hard and made of some spicy, musk flavoured concoction.

They were used to fill up the bags of mixtures, but overuse was considered unsporting of dairy owners.

Larger lollies that didn’t feature in mixtures included Spacemen cigarettes, which were white with a red tip and made to look like real cigarettes.

Most children just called them smokes and some tried to look really grown up by pretending to actually smoke them (how times have changed).

A perennial question mark hung over red SOS cough lollies.

The aniseed was rather addictive and could be eaten in class as it was a medical remedy, not a lolly. Or were they, hence the quandary?

They did turn your mouth a tell-tale red and, if one reads Janet Frame’s autobiography To the Is land, over indulgence could cause drowsiness.

On discussing ‘lollies we have known’ with others, we have come up with additional gems of toasties, K bars, buzz bars, toffee milk bars and Sparkles.

My favourite bar was a Santé bar, which was just a piece of chocolate. At 5 cents it was a bit expensive, but well worth it.

Rainbow lollies My lolly expertise is rather limited as my corner dairy was actually a ‘supermarket’ and they didn’t have a large range, plus I have always preferred chocolate or potato chips to the hard sugary objects many children loved.

This is rather odd for someone who comes from Oamaru as among the other things that town can boast, it is the home of Regina confections.

This business, now called Rainbow, did their bit for Kiwi culture by inventing a number of treats such as fruit puffs (like eskimos but, well, puffy), pineapple lumps and even an early form of chocolate fish.

As well as making sweets and chocolate, the company also had a bubble gum factory. In order to encourage sales, Regina issued a number of sets of collectible cards.

Alongside the two thin slabs of bubble-gum, there would be a card with the popular culture icon of the day.

While nowadays this accolade seems to be restricted to sports players (at least two separate series of All Blacks were produced), once upon a time the cards were of ‘real’ stars such as Abba and the Garbage Gang.

Even I was enticed to collect a set of Star Wars cards, which, when you pasted them together, formed a poster!

Museum gum When I got older I thought my association with bubble gum was over, but when I worked at the museum there, I was given the task of cataloguing the collection of Regina, when they were bought out by Allens.

Among the moulds for chocolates and a long forgotten series of 1920s conversation lollies (like the later message hearts which had comments that ranged from ‘I love you’ to ‘you stink’), I was faced with cataloguing and storing their enormous bubble gum collection.

I really had no idea there had been so many series of cards, and so much bubble gum produced in my home town.

One of the most bizarre conversations I think I have had during my many years of working in museums has to be being trying to convince a conservator at Te Papa that my request for information on how to store bubble gum and chocolate in a museum environment wasn’t a late April Fool’s Day joke.

Once we decided how to store it, I was surprised by the number of people who still collected the cards.

There were also many people who, when we displayed the packets and advertising material, were taken right back to their younger days and I was told many stories about the ‘value’ of a curly wirly or how someone ate so many chocolate-covered cinnamon bars they were sick.

Sweets are a natural part of childhood and are far more than the nutritional value or taste.

They can transport us back to a time in our lives when opening a bag of sweets was full of mystery and could stir in our young hearts the full range of emotions from anger and disappointment to sheer joy.

They remind us of a time when stress was having 50 cents in your hand and not being able to decide what to buy.

Sweet chilli chicken sausages 8 Tegel Pre-cooked Chicken Sausages 1.8kg, sliced diagonally 1 onion, cut into thin wedges 1/4 C sweet chilli sauce 1 T red wine vinegar 1/2 C chicken stock 1 t cornflour ■ Heat a dash of oil in a frying pan.

Add the Tegel Pre-cooked Chicken Sausages 1.8kg and cook over medium heat until they are golden brown. Remove from the heat and set aside.

■ Add the onion to the pan and cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until golden.

■ Mix the corn flour together with a little of the chicken stock to create a paste.

■ Add the sausages back to the pan along with the sweet chilli sauce, vinegar, chicken stock and the cornflour paste. Simmer uncovered for 3 to 4 minutes.

■ Serve with mashed potato and green vegetables.

Dixon on the Indycar pace early Driving his new Honda-powered blue car, four-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon has started his 2017 campaign with a third placing in Florida.

Sebastien Bourdais won on adopted home track with defending IndyCar champion Simon Pagenaud second.

A perennial slow starter, Dixon appears to have a fast car and the ability to make some early inroads

into the title race.

Dixon qualified second on the starting grid of the street circuit, although he struck problems when a caution was called for debris on the track.

“I locked the rears going in on the restart, it kicked the anti-stall and then turned the engine off, so lucky to get it re-fired and we were on our way,” Dixon said.

He had to work his way back

through the field from 14th spot.

“The car was fast today, we definitely had some speed, we made a lot of spots back up, so it was a nice recovery for third spot.”

Dixon said the result reflected the high standards of his Chip Gannasi Racing team as they worked extra hard in the off-season because of the major changes in front of them with the new engine and aero kit.

In brief Slater on the way back Excitement is growing in the Melbourne Storm camp ahead of the expected NRL return of star fullback Billy Slater. The 33-yearold hasn’t played since round one last season, but is widely tipped to make his much-anticipated return from shoulder surgery when the Storm host the Brisbane Broncos at AAMI Park on Thursday.

“It’s exciting to see the way he’s training at the moment ... he’s looking really sharp. I think when he does come back he’s going to light the house up,” teammate Kenny Bromwich said yesterday.

Close finishes a feature of Ribbon Day

Organisers of the Special Olympics Ribbon Day at the EA Networks Centre on Sunday are hailing the day’s competition as another successful event.

More than 40 swimmers from across the three competing clubs took part in the morning’s competition.

Swimmers from Mid Canterbury, North Canterbury and Canterbury all converged on the EA Networks Centre’s main pool

for the annually contested event.

Graeme Bain, from Special Olympics New Zealand, said the morning went off without a hitch.

“I think we can safely say it was a successful competition,” Bain said.

“We had good numbers, which although slightly down on previous years, were still strong.

“The Special Olympic National Games, which are held every four years, are on in Wellington in November this year and I

think there are quite a few people around the region who are saving their money to go to that.

“We had 36 official entries and a few people who entered on the day, so it was great and I have to say that the venue was just fantastic.”

Bain said the competitive nature was strong throughout the meet with some very fast times recorded and close finishes.

In one of the relay events, sides from North Canterbury and Canterbury were unable to split

with a dead-heat decision announced.

“There was some great swimming going on in the pool, with really close finishes.”

Bain also paid credit to the local Special Olympics branch, headed

by Colleen Lindsay who he said were fantastic to deal with.

“They are only a small club, but they did a lot of work into getting this event off the ground this year and we really appreciated what they managed to do for us on the day.”

DRS an issue for Black Caps By andrew alderson New Zealand cricket coach Mike Hesson has defended his side’s lapses of judgment in the drawn first test against South Africa.

The Black Caps missed some opportunities to seize the advantage in the field and through the decision review system in the first session of the fourth day, but held parity with the tourists throughout.

The Proteas survived two failed reviews, one non-review that would have earned a wicket, and two dropped catches.

New Zealand recovered to take three wickets for 67 runs in the final session. South Africa were left on 224 for six, a lead of 191 runs, before rain washed out the final day.

The hosts suffered for their misjudgment on five occasions.

1. A failed review from Trent Boult in the 25th over, when a ball hit Jean-Paul Duminy’s pad, rather than the bat, on the way through to BJ Watling’s gloves.

Duminy was on two.

2. Tom Latham dropped a firstslip catch off Boult in the 29th over, when Duminy was six.

3. No review was taken, when Jeetan Patel hit Duminy (20) on the back leg in the 38th over, which, in hindsight, the ball tracker showed hitting the stumps.

4. An lbw review was taken against Duminy (20) in the 40th over, when an inside edge hit his pad.

5. Elgar (35) edged Jimmy Neesham in the 41st over, but the ball clipped Watling’s out-stretched glove.

Neesham had two first-slip catches elude his grasp from El-

gar off Patel and Mitchell Santner. Elgar scored 89 and Duminy 39.

Post-match, it was suggested to Hesson that the team had “cocked-up a few DRS decisions”.

“You’ve probably put that quite succinctly, really,” Hesson quipped. “It’s probably something we need to firm up on.

“With the DRS, you do need to take time to gather information.

“We missed out on one against Pakistan earlier in the summer, when we took half a second too long, and there’s probably a couple in this series, where we let emotion take over and made instant decisions, which weren’t right.”

Hesson defended the work of his rejigged slip cordon in the absence of the injured Ross Taylor.

“Tom dropped one at first slip, but unless BJ grows another four

inches, he’s never going to catch the one which hit the end of his fingers. To consider there’s a whole heap [of dropped catches] is off the mark. Tom’s fielded at first slip in ODI and test cricket quite a lot, and been good.

“In many ways, he had too long to think about it. In some ways, you want those to arrive quickly, so you’re more instinctive.”

The Wellington forecast is for rain leading up to the test start on Thursday, but fine for most of the match. The pitch is expected to be under covers for much of the build-up.

Boult has travelled to Wellington, where his sore left hip and pelvis will be monitored. Tim Southee is expected to return regardless on a more seamerfriendly pitch. If Boult does not pass muster, Matt Henry is next in line.

Hayne dodges surgery Gold Coast coach Neil Henry has not ruled out making a play for Sydney Roosters’ Dale Copley after the Titans injury-ravaged backline stocks took another hit with Jarryd Hayne sidelined for up to six weeks. Henry said Hayne would not require surgery for an ankle complaint suffered in last round’s NRL loss in Newcastle but would be unavailable for four to six weeks. “Scans have shown significant ligament damage but it’s not as bad as first (thought) which would have required an operation,” Henry said.

Ritchie eyes Queensland Plans are already in place to give the wellperformed filly Bella Gioia an opportunity to further her record offshore.

The Swiss Ace filly hasn’t raced since she finished runner-up in the Gr.1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas at Riccarton in the spring, after which she had to undergo surgery to remove bone chips from a fetlock.

“She’s had a really good break over the summer and she’s back in work now,” trainer Shaune Ritchie said.

“All going well, the plan is to run her firstup in the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes and if she performs well she’ll go to Brisbane.

“There’s only one plane going over, and that’s in early May, so we want to make sure she’s back to her best.”

A half-sister to the stakes performers Niki Piki Milo and The Dom, Bella Gioia has won twice from six appearances up to a mile.

“There’s nothing definite locked in, but there are plenty of options for her in Queensland,” Ritchie said.

“We will be keeping her to 1400 and 1600 metre races without over-taxing her, we want to see her racing in the spring as well.

“She’s Group One placed here behind the good filly La Diosa in the Guineas and it would be great to get some black type in Australia as well.”

Can the Irish stop England?

After a bruising defeat by Wales at the Principality Stadium, Ireland need to lift themselves quickly for the visit of Eddie Jones’ rampant England team next weekend.

Motivation will not be a problem, even with the championship gone.

A full house at the Aviva Stadium, St Patrick’s Day weekend, the 10th anniversary of that game at Croke Park and England chasing a world record and back-to-back Grand Slams?

No red-blooded Irishman is going to want to see England lording it over them on the Dublin turf.

As Jones remarked following England’s 61-21 win over Scotland: “The party Ireland would like to spoil the most is the England party”.

The question is, how can Joe Schmidt’s team stop the England juggernaut?

How can Ireland be closer to the team that beat the All Blacks in such stunning fashion in Chicago last autumn, rather than the one that has lost to Argentina, England, France, South Africa (twice), New Zealand, Scotland and now Wales in the last 17 months ...

Pray that Murray recovers from his “stinger”.

There is no doubt that Conor Murray – together with Johnny Sexton – is one of Ireland’s two most influential players. In fact, his huge importance to the team arguably clouded Schmidt’s judgment on Friday, when he stayed down following a tackle on George North.

Murray was kept on the field, even after it became clear that his passes had lost their usual zip; one in particular that Tadhg Furlong failed to cling on to indirectly led to Sexton’s yellow card and the penalty that put Wales ahead.

Eyebrows were then raised when Murray, clearly still in some discomfort, started the second half.

Again, North scored before

Conor Murray receives medical attention in the game against Wales. Ireland will need him to be operating at 100 per cent if they are to seriously challenge the England juggernaut.

PHOTO AP Murray was finally withdrawn in favour of Kieran Marmion, whose sharper delivery helped Ireland get back into the game.

Schmidt must be brave enough to start with Marmion on Saturday if Murray is not 100 per cent.

Is it time to drop Heaslip?

Ireland found it tough going against Wales’ back row and also struggled at the line-out, seeing three of their own throw-ins stolen.

Peter O’Mahony, arguably the finest jumper in European rugby, belatedly entered the fray in place of C J Stander. Some observers wondered whether he could perhaps have replaced Jamie Heaslip.

“Stander was the most effective of the back row,” argued Shane Horgan in his Irish Times column on Sunday.

“In contrast, Heaslip was having quite an ineffective game.”

Horgan went on to suggest that O’Mahony could return to the

starting line-up against England, with Stander moving to No 8, the position he plays for Munster.

“There must be consequence for losing to both Scotland and Wales, especially when we had the players to win both of those games. Heaslip has had a very effective season this year, but he might need to step out.”

Farrell must find a way of stopping his son.

Hailed as the final piece in Schmidt’s jigsaw when he came on board last year, Andy Farrell got plenty of praise, as Ireland defended for their lives against the All Blacks in the autumn.

However, three tries conceded in the opening half against Scotland in Round One and three again in Cardiff have raised doubts. England, by contrast, were scoring almost at will against Scotland – George Ford and Owen Farrell pulling the strings and Scotland’s midfield all over the place.

Farrell must find a way of neutralising the threat posed by his own son.

Schmidt has some wonderful backs at his disposal – Henshaw and Garry Ringrose were being talked up as the potential Lions starting midfield at one stage.

It is time for them to show it.

Jones’ finishers have got England out of jail a number of times in this tournament.

On Saturday, with the game already won, they applied the boot to Scotland’s throat.

When you are throwing on the likes of Billy Vunipola against a tiring and disillusioned defence, it is only going to end one way.

Ireland have a pretty useful bench themselves, with the likes of Cian Healy, O’Mahony, Iain Henderson, potentially even vice-captain Heaslip, all capable of coming on and making an impact.

Schmidt will have to use his replacements judiciously.

Carter booed as Racing-Metro defeated La Rochelle, with former All Black Victor Vito to the fore, are further advancing their French Top 14 claims, after defeating champions Racing-Metro 38-15 in Paris on the weekend.

Vito scored a try from No 8, while fellow former Hurricane Jason Eaton was in the No 7 jersey.

Dan Carter kicked a conversion in his first game back from injury and his drink-driving incident, but it was not a happy homecoming for the 35-year-old, as some of the crowd at Stade Yves du Manoir booed him.

In the other semi-final matchup, Exeter Chiefs beat Harlequins, who had Alofa Alofa and George Naoupu in the mix, 24-7.

Injury list a concern As he surveys the collateral damage of the opening three rounds of the Super Rugby season during which four key outside backs have been injured, All Blacks coach Steve Hansen might be particularly worried about the injuries to Waisake Naholo and Nehe MilnerSkudder.

The two right wings will be automatic selections for Hansen’s squad for the British and Irish Lions tour, and both have had terrible recent luck with injuries.

An added complicated factor is the knee injury to Crusaders fullback Israel Dagg, who performed well on the right wing for the All Blacks last year.

Naholo injured a hamstring during the Highlanders’ 16-12 win over the Blues at Eden Park, a worrying development for a player who broke his right leg while playing for the All Blacks in the middle of 2015, and then broke it again in round one of Super Rugby last season.

Recovery from a hamstring injury varies, but Naholo can expect to be out for between two and six weeks.

Hurricanes flier Milner-Skudder, too, has had rotten luck.

He dislocated his shoulder in round three last year and suffered an ankle injury in his team’s loss to the Chiefs in Hamilton.

Originally slated for four weeks off, Milner-Skudder, who has been wearing a “moon boot”, had an MRI scan yesterday and more will be known about his condition today, said a Hurricanes spokesman.

Hansen has options, and all of his currently injured players are likely to be in the frame for the first test against the Lions in Auckland on June 24.

Fullback Ben Smith, who has missed the Highlanders’ past two matches with concussion, is likely to be available to play the Hurricanes in Wellington on Saturday, and his versatility, plus that of Dagg and Beauden Barrett, is a huge plus.

Either Smith or Dagg could play on the right wing, leaving firstchoice first-five Barrett to play at fullback and Aaron Cruden at No10.

Both Smith and Dagg possess pace and good kicking games, but there is nothing like having a specialist finisher like Naholo or Milner-Skudder at the end of the chain.

Milner-Skudder, who scored a try in the 2015 World Cup final, was one of the stars of the tournament, and few players possess his agility and pace off the mark.

Likewise, few possess the speed of Naholo, who was taken to the World Cup despite only just recovering from his broken leg but couldn’t quite reproduce his Super Rugby form.

“What are the rewards of taking Waisake?” Hansen asked before the World Cup. “Well, he is a try-scoring machine, he has X-factor and he brings something to the team that others in the group don’t bring.

“We know he’s really talented.”

Sport Kiwi bikers dominate Kiwis have dominated the Oceania Continental Mountain Biking Championships, winning both the men’s and women’s cross-country gongs.

Defending men’s champion Anton Cooper surged to victory at the Toowoomba course in Queensland despite suffering mechanical issues.

A crash on the second of five laps caused Cooper’s bike chain to come off, but a quick fix gave him enough time to peg back the race leaders. In the women’s race, national champion Samara Sheppard blitzed the field by taking the lead early and going on to win by two-and-a-half minutes.

The EA Networks Centre pool was a hive of activity with a plethora of students taking to the water to compete in the annual event.

The day started with heats in the morning before the highly

competitive finals in the afternoon catering for all types of swimmers in all disciplines with a large contingent of supporters on the sidelines cheering the competitors on.

ondary schools’ events coming up in the next few weeks including the traditional summer tournament week which kicks off on March 26.

Sacked by Derby – again Former England manager Steve McClaren has been sacked by English Championship club Derby for the second time in less than two years.

The 55-year-old returned to Derby last October, following his May 2015 dismissal, but a wretched run of results has ended his second spell.
