Locals keep on top of beach rubbish

People picking up rubbish along the shores of Mid Canterbury’s coastline are not only saving the oceans from pollution, they are also saving ratepayers money.

The Ashburton District Council and Environment Canterbury both respond to reports of rubbish along coastlines, however, there are active community members who try and keep on top of the problem before it becomes worth reporting.

Hakatere Hut Holders Association Simon McIlroy said locals in the area would often take a bag and collect rubbish along the shoreline.

Some had washed up from the sea, some had come down the Ashburton River, and some had been left there by visitors to the area.

“They take a bag every time they are down and bring it back, they don’t like seeing it on there,” McIlroy said.

While the rubbish was an obvious concern, it was not a major issue, and Mid Canterbury coastlines were remaining relatively clean despite the growing worldwide problem of plastic pollution in oceans.

Rubbish left on top of the cliff at the Pendarves coastline on Saturday night, including McDonald’s and KFC wrappers and drink bottles and cans, was also picked up by a local the next day and disposed of.

“Dumped rubbish is a disgusting habit, and although our data indicates it isn’t a growing prob-

lem, it’s certainly a burden on the community, particularly ratepayers who are the ones footing the bill,” he added.

Stratford hoped private landlords would not follow Housing New Zealand’s lead, and instead consider the risk associated with meth use, even at a low level.

He hoped these landlords

would continue to make use of low-cost lab testing in between tenancies.

“It’s the only way you can identify the behaviour, and it’s only by identifying the behaviour you

can moderate it,” Stratford said.

It was not fair that decent, lawabiding people had to put up with the negative behaviours of meth users, and could find themselves “intimidated, bullied,

robbed and subject to physical violence”.

“Is this really the future we want to create for the economically disadvantaged in New Zealand?” he said.

Winter bites into blanket and food supplies

Judith Lilley Lilley said there was big demand for woollen blankets in particular, and this was outweighing what the Salvation Army could supply.

Anyone wishing to drop off food can drop it into the foodbank during opening hours – Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 10am to midday.

Food and blankets can also be dropped to the Salvation Army family store during opening hours of 9.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday or Saturday 10am to 2pm. And the foodbank has its own new landline phone number, 307-2901.

Efforts to control pesky pigeons in Ashburton are not working as the birds continue to thrive in the town.

There have even been reports of desperate business owners using a slug gun on rooftops to try and kill the birds.

Hundreds of the avian pests occupy the town centre, roosting and nesting on buildings more than one storey high, with similar numbers at the Ashburton River rail bridge.

Somerset House property manager Hamish Niles said he would like to see the Ashburton District Council and business owners get together to come up with a solution.

“They make a hell of a mess, and they can get into all sorts of places you would not think they would be able to,” Niles said.

Putting spikes on the Somerset building last year had helped in reducing numbers there, but

not in the town as a whole.

He had even heard reports of one desperate business owner in the past using a slug gun.

Ashburton Club and MSA manager Simon McDonnell said the birds nested in guttering leading to blockages, and fouled around the building.

“They are a straight out pest, that’s the only way you can describe them.”

He contracted experts to trap them, but they continued to be an issue.

He wanted to see the birds’ nesting sites cleaned up, in areas such as the Ashburton Domain.

Council environmental monitoring manager Rick Catchpowle said the council had already worked on the issue to find solutions, and provided information on how to control the birds on its website. And as a gesture of goodwill the council entered into a joint venture with businesses wanting to engage the services of a pest contractor

“The responsibility for pest control on private property falls to the property owner,” Catchpowle said.

“Trapping and culling are management tools and are not a long-term solution. Pigeons breed all year round, and so as long as an environment continues to provide their needs such as food and shelter, then they will continue to build up in that environment.

“Methods to pigeon-proof the buildings would achieve a more long-term solution, and this was communicated to business owners.”

The council had processes in place for eradicating pests in the domain and on council-owned properties.

Police did not respond to a query from the Guardian by deadline yesterday on whether using a slug gun to control the birds was illegal.

Winter is biting into supplies at the Ashburton Foodbank.

Community Ministries coordinator Judith Lilley said the facility had run out of items such as flour, sugar, pasta sauce, tinned tomatoes and tinned pulses and beans. Other items running low were rolled oats, breakfast spreads and muesli bars.

“When it gets cooler the demand is usually greater, and it’s the time of year that good nourishing food is important,” Lilley said.

There had been increasing demand over the years, and the service gave out up to nine food parcels per day.

The makeup of those needing food parcels had changed from a high proportion of beneficiaries to more people on low incomes, as well as more transient people, and even included a handful of homeless living in Ashburton.

“Nobody is turned away, we would have to have a really good reason if we didn’t help somebody,” Lilley said.

The Salvation Army is also collecting blankets after a winter blanket drive was initiated for the month of June by Trevor Hurley at Real Estate New Zealand, supported by More FM Mid Canterbury.

In brief Charged with murder A 31-year-old man has been charged with murder after the death of a 5-month-old baby.

The baby boy died in Wellington Hospital Tuesday. Police say the man was known to the baby. He was due to appear in Wellington District Court yesterday.

Emergency services were called to an Upper Hutt home on Monday this week, where the baby boy was discovered with serious injuries.

The boy was treated, including undergoing surgery, but died in hospital on Tuesday.

Students share experiences

More fitness classes, more teamwork activities and more opportunities to learn about the cultures of their classmates.

Those were some of the ideas that resulted when students from nine Mid Canterbury schools were asked what they’d like to see in their schools on Tuesday.

The Opuke Community of Learning (COL) held a student hui at Lauriston School, giving around 50 student representatives a chance to share their learning and experiences.

Teacher Jo Smith said the in-

formation will be passed on to each of the schools to help improve teaching practices.

“Children are the focus of everything we do at school,” she said – so it is important to engage with them and listen to their experiences.

The students, ranging from year 4 to year 13, spent the morning printmaking pictures and getting to know one another.

In the afternoon, they worked in groups to discuss and answer questions which they had formulated themselves, including what their teachers could do to help them learn, and whether

they feel safe in their school environments. The answers will be passed on anonymously.

“We want to hear from the students about things they feel are going well with their learning, how culturally responsive we are as teachers, communities and boards, and give ideas about how we as teachers can improve our practice and approach so students feel they are in control of their learning and have a sense of wellbeing,” Lead Teacher Across Schools Rosie Robinson said.

Mayfield School student representative Alice Homer said working with students from

other schools was “different, but fun”. Smith said the group of students were well-behaved and eager to share practical ideas.

The Opuke COL was established under a nationwide government programme in 2014, and represents around 1400 students from Chertsey, Dorie, Lauriston, Mayfield, Mt Somers Springburn, Our Lady of the Snows and Rakaia schools along with Mount Hutt College.

Led by Methven Primary School principal Chris Murphy, the COL has also held massed teachers-only days, and hope to hold more student hui days in the future.

A nationwide shortage of prescription condoms for men with large penises is causing a concern of unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.

Government drug-buying agency Pharmac says there is an ongoing “stock issue” with 56mm Durex Confidence large condoms supplies. The crisis which started earlier this year was supposed to have been resolved by April – but there is still no end in sight.

Passenger killed A young man has died at the scene after a stolen silver Mazda Axela crashed on Polson Street in Castlecliff, Whanganui yesterday.

The deceased was the front side passenger of the vehicle and the driver of the vehicle escaped on foot following the crash at about 2.15pm. Whanganui police believe the driver was a young man and their search for him is ongoing.

Christmas market bookings now open Stallholders interested in booking their space at this year’s Ashburton Trust Event Centre Merry Little Christmas Market are being advised to get in now.

The market is usually held in November, to coincide with the Longbeach Challenge, but this year it’s been pushed back to December 2.

Functions marketing manager Casey Rose said bookings only opened earlier this week and already a dozen stalls are confirmed.

The market was first run five years ago with about 35 stalls but up to 80 are expected at this year’s event.

Two local bands, one soloist in rockquest

Two Ashburton College bands, one Mount Hutt College band and one Mount Hutt College soloist will be competing to join the ranks of Kiwi music success at the South Canterbury regional Smokefreerockquest final next Friday.

The Theatre Royal will be pumping next Friday as the top youth bands and solo-duos in South Canterbury play off and vie for a spot in the national finals in September.

Ashburton College’s Two n Half and Redwall and Mount Hutt College’s North Yarn and soloist Jaime Lamond will face tough competition from 12 other South Canterbury entries.

Smokefreerockquest founder and director Glenn Common said Smokefreerockquest offers entrants a platform for live performance that builds on what they have learnt at school.

“The support that contemporary musicians get in schools these days and the framework provided by NCEA is evident in the number of young musicians that get to performance standard,” he said.

“Secondary school teachers offer tuition and encouragement, create space for bands and soloists to practise, they come along to support them at Smokefreerockquest and help them to get the most value from the experience of entering SFRQ – before, during and after.”

He said the professional performance environment offered

by Smokefreerockquest includes a stage set up with lights, sound, projection and technical support in a show that includes a guest band, MC and lots of giveaways.

SFRQ founder and director Pete Rainey said in regional cities the Smokefreerockquest final is often the year’s biggest youth gig and a major influencer.

The South Canterbury regional finals will be held at the Theatre Royal, Timaru, from 7pm.

Tickets are $10 for school students and $20 for adults from Eventfinda or at the door.

The guest act is Dunedin indierock Bark Like a Dog whose debut single Tremolo shot to number one on the iTunes rock charts.

Amber Rose’s mother found dead The mother of slain teenager Amber-Rose Rush has died in what is believed to be a suspected suicide, and the family say they are glad her suffering is over.

Lisa Ann Rush died on Monday, just over four months after her daughter Amber-Rose Rush was found dead in her Corstorphine home on February 2.

A police spokeswoman confirmed the woman, in her 40s, was found dead at a Dunedin property late on Monday night.

The death was not suspicious and would be referred to the coroner, the spokeswoman said.

Amber-Rose’s sister Shantelle Rush said her response to the news was of “total heartbreak”.

“I’m lost for words at the moment.”

In comments on social media,

which she gave permission for the Otago Daily Times to use, she told her brother “we haven’t got much left but we will always have each other”.

“I honestly thought we couldn’t go through any more pain than we already were but I was wrong.

“Unfortunately last night Mum went to be with Amber Rose. We are absolutely devastated and don’t know how to get past this.

“Our family will be forever broken ... but mum, I hope you are at peace now with Amber.

“And I hope you never ever forget the amount of love me, Jayden Rush, Ollie, Piper and the rest of our family all have for you.

Success at Epro8 Rakaia School students channelled their inner engineers and technicians to earn success at an Epro8 competition last week.

Two Year 5/6 teams and two Year 7/8 teams took on the event in Rolleston last Thursday, and one team from each year group qualified for the semi-finals. The competition calls on competitors to combine their mechanical, technology, science and team building skills, and the first-time entrants are thrilled with the result. Meanwhile, the school’s Year 6 Rippa Rugby Team is off to Timaru today to compete against the regional winners from Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury and North Otago. The winner will head to the nationals – so watch this space!

Things that for others are a luxury, while for us they’re just part of everyday life. Often, it’s not until you don’t have something that you realise just how much you rely on it.

The Ashburton Foodbank is running low on a number of items at the moment – flour sugar, pasta sauce, tinned toma-

toes, tinned beans and they are fast-running dry of rolled oats, spreads and muesli bars too.

And so, it falls back on to us – the community of this district – to reach into our cupboards, fridges and/or pantries and see what we can spare. It doesn’t have to be much and any little item will help.

Next time you are at the supermarket – working your way up and down the aisles, chuck a

couple of extra tins of something into your trolley, or a few packets of pasta sauce or something similar.

You won’t even notice it by the time you get to the checkout, but the satisfaction you’ll get by knowing you’ve really helped someone out who lives in the same little part of the world will well and truly outweigh the extra few dollars missing from the back pocket.

It’s not just the Sallies’ foodbank struggling either.

They are also on the look-out for more woollen blankets to help combat the colder months, led by Trevor Hurley.

There must be hundreds of homes out there in the community who have a blanket tucked

away somewhere in the back of a cupboard that they can spare for someone who needs it desperately.

If so, get in touch with the Salvation Army and let them know.

It’s unfortunate that we live in a world where there are families out there who are struggling financially, but it’s also wonderful that we live in a society where there are organisations and individuals who are more than willing to give their time to ensuring that everyone gets the opportunity to live a happy and well life.

So, let’s get things restocked, Ashburton.

Let’s fill the foodbank back up again and replenish the stocks of the Salvation Army.

Winter might officially be here, but it hasn’t truly arrived yet, so there’s still time to ensure that as many people and homes within our region are prepared for what the colder days, weeks and months might bring.

Anyone wishing to drop off food can drop it into the foodbank during opening hours – Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 10am to midday.

Food and blankets can also be dropped to the Salvation Army Family Store during opening hours of 9.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday, or Saturdays 10am to 2pm. And the foodbank has its own new landline phone number, 307-2901.

If you can give a little bit, you’re a legend.

I

t sits derelict and engineless at an airport in North Carolina.

Its shabby, fading and nowunfamiliar livery gives little hint of the ground-breaking role it once played in revolutionising New Zealand’s transportation industry.

On October 7, 1968, the former Boeing 737 ZK-NAD was the very first commercial jet to operate a domestic passenger service in this country. (The first NZ operated pure jet on our international routes was a DC8 operated by TEAL in 1965).

Built by Boeing as part of a special NZ order of early generation Boeing 737 219s for our national carrier, it arrived in company with fellow identical 737 ZK NAC but although second in the registration sequence it was NAD that stole that groundbreaking claim to fame.

While it might not exactly be a widely-recognised fame today, Wellington-based broadcaster and lifelong observer of this country’s commercial aviation industry, Paul Brennan wants to change all that.

Over the past year and a bit his campaign to seek and secure what he refers to as “five airframes of national significance”, has grown momentum.

It has been a journey of highs and lows with at one point the heartbreaking but fortunately misguided realisation that no early generation ex NAC 737 airframes had survived. Until incredibly, some expert investigative searching revealed the very aircraft that turned NZ air travel on its head, was forlorn but salvageable and available, sitting derelict in America.

The other airframes Brennan has in his sights are the sole remaining examples of actual former NZ aircraft that have played a huge role in our airline history.

PHOTO MARK ABBOTT Along with the early generation 737, they are former Air NZ Boeing 747-419 “Jumbo” ZK NBV, Air NZ DC-10 ZK-NZS, Air NZ Douglas DC8 ZK-NZC and the former TEAL/Air NZ Lockheed Electra ZK-TEB. In each case, these airframes are the sole remaining ex-NZ examples worldwide.

And scattered across the world they are each lying derelict in places like Havana International Airport in Cuba (DC10), and Manaus International Airport in Brazil (DC8).

The eldest of the targeted aircraft is ironically the only one still active, Electra ZK-TEB which is operated by Buffalo Airways Canada, the subject of the TV series Ice Pilots.

Brennan makes the case that these aircraft are, in their own way, as important as the great waka that brought the first inhabitants to our country.

They have conveyed the hopes and dreams of Kiwis across our nation and the globe and have been vitally significant in our nation’s development.

At first Brennan went into a crowd-funding situation to allow initial steps to be made towards setting up a proper framework to allow his initiative to get off the ground. Just recently, there has been registered a formal legal charitable trust and efforts are now moving up a gear.

After a considerable search for

a suitable location to eventually display these treasures, Bring Our Birds Home has developed a partnership with the Wanaka Toy and Transport Museum with owners Jason and Debbie Rhodes.

Wanaka provides the considerable space required, a kind climate to minimise airframe degradation and a growing tourist market.

BOBH had as a first priority, the sourcing and securing of the airframes. Along the way it has acquired access to parts to aid the projects, such as a correct pair of early generation JT8D engines for the currently engineless 737. It is one thing to locate these large pieces of aviation heritage, – it is another huge undertaking to dismantle and transport them across the world.

But there are proven specialists equipped to handle this sort of thing and probably a number of worldwide logistics companies, who if sold the message and the mission correctly, might well step up to assist.

Somewhere along the line will come the refurbishment of the airframes into high quality displays, but again, with the will and some great Kiwi ingenuity, it is all do-able.

from the golden era, but theirs has been an even more ambitious task. Most of the examples HARS has acquired actually fly. They are blessed with an energetic crew of retired Qantas engineers who now do for a hobby, that which they once did for a living.

The BOBH initiative by comparison, is much more straightforward, but nevertheless remains a big elephant to eat.

But the way to eat an elephant apparently, is in small bites. Lots of them.

If it hadn’t been for Paul Brennan and his tenacity and enthusiasm, (he has an extensive library of archival footage shot by himself over many decades of NZ commercial airline development), these remaining significant Kiwi airframes hanging onto survival right now by a thread, might have been lost forever.

But they do exist, and negotiations with each party involved have been extremely positive.

Meat consumption in spotlight Many New Zealand consumers are unaware of the environmental impacts of their meat consumption and this may be influencing our high meat intake, according to a study by the University of Otago.

Researchers Garrett Lentz and Dr Sean Connelly of the University’s Department of Geography, along with Dr Miranda Mirosa (Consumer Food Science) and Tim Jowett (Mathematics & Statistics), have been investigating the factors that could change attitudes towards eating meat.

They found the high costs of meat and potential health benefits to be the most prevalent motivations for reducing meat intake, while environmental concern was one of the weakest incentives.

They believe a lack of connection between meat eating and its associated environmental impacts could potentially explain why it is not a big motivator for consumers.

Lentz, a PhD student, explains that research into consumer motivations, attitudes and attachment towards meat is increasingly important as society grapples with the issue of how to feed a growing population in the coming decades without significantly degrading the environment in the process.

“It is clear that moving towards more plant-based foods could not only reduce the environmental impacts from animal agriculture, which include climate change,

deforestation, pollution and biodiversity loss, but also create a healthier society that can feed more people with less resources,” he said.

“Understanding consumers is a first step for potential change. Organisations and governments aiming to reduce meat consumption, no matter their motivation, will find it useful if they have a better un-

derstanding of what drives people away from or towards certain food products, like meat.”

Lentz hopes the research findings on the lack of environmental knowledge will help pinpoint what needs to be done next.

“Ways to increase knowledge about meat consumption’s link to environmental impacts could be an important component to motivate dietary change in consumers.”

Although shifting to a more plant-based diet may bring environmental and public health benefits, Lentz said there are multiple barriers that may make it more difficult for consumers to shift their eating habits, particularly as meat is often a central component in many Western dishes.

“Efforts to reduce meat consumption across Western society therefore have to overcome personal barriers such as associations and attitudes towards meat, as well as systematic and cultural barriers that include meal structure, cooking skills and background, and nutrition beliefs,” he said.

“As well as raising awareness of the issues related to producing and consuming animal products, we hope these findings provide practical information to understand how consumer knowledge, motivations, and attitudes towards meat can influence policy on reducing meat consumption.”

The researchers believe this information may help policy makers understand meat consumption in New Zealand, while also

offering some direction for strategies or policies, like a potential “meat tax” based on environmental impact.

The researchers also hope this gets consumers thinking about where their food comes from and how it is produced.

“We want to raise questions about the environmental impacts of food from production to consumption. Does my food contribute positively to the environment, my personal health, and to the greater wellbeing of society?”

The researchers are not expecting the meat industry to be surprised by these findings.

“The future will likely be that of reduced meat consumption, and companies will in turn have to shift their focus more towards providing quality rather than quantity,” Lentz said.

“The meat industry sees where future demand is headed, and we think most businesses are trying to get ahead of the curve; some traditionally meat-based companies have already begun to invest in more plantbased products.

“How quickly these shifts occur and how large they will be remains to be seen, but companies that have traditionally focused on producing large quantities of meat may have to shift towards producing more ‘premium’ products with low environmental impact and/or plant-based alternatives to remain competitive.”

Bid to improve our biosecurity

Source needs to be made public as soon as possible

The government is in line with primary sector industry leaders when it comes to biosecurity, says the Minister for Agriculture and Biosecurity Damien O’Connor.

The KPMG Agribusiness Agenda report, released today, reveals having a world class biosecurity system is top priority for the leaders surveyed.

“Biosecurity risks can threaten our economy and way of life. This government understands that if we are to keep pace with the increasing levels of goods and people across our borders we need to step up our efforts in biosecurity.

“A pleasing result from the survey was a recognition from industry that biosecurity is everyone’s job and that everyone has a role to play in dealing with the risk.

“The strong partnership formed between industry and government in the fight against mycoplasma bovis has demonstrated that we can come together effectively when needed.

“But there’s plenty of work to do to improve our ability to respond effectively to major incursions. High on the list is improving compliance with the National Animal Identification and Tracing (Nait) system, as we have seen throughout the M. bovis response.

“Not enough farmers have been complying with Nait, and there’s a growing understanding throughout the sector that this needs to change. This year I’ve accelerated a year-late report into the effectiveness of Nait and have instructed my officials to make the appropriate improvements, including making it easier to use.

“To give biosecurity the attention it deserves, I’ve reorganised the Ministry for Primary Industries, to create Biosecurity New Zealand, a stand-alone unit whose sole focus is biosecurity.

“In addition, I’ve signalled that the Bi-

The current Act gives us a solid foundation, but we need to make sure it is fit for purpose in a rapidly changing world.

“This is a big job and needs to be carefully considered with strong input from industry and the public. I expect it to begin after we have dealt with the M. bovis threat.”

M. bovis spurs updated sharemilker contracts Federated Farmers contracts are being updated to include provisions for sharemilkers and sharemilker farm owners to develop a farm biosecurity plan.

A viable sharemilking industry has long been a key part of the vibrancy and innovation of the dairy industry. With the Mycoplasma bovis incursion, and the decision to try and eradicate the disease, “an extra challenge has been put in front of us,” the federation’s Sharemilker Farm Owners chairman Tony Wilding said.

A biosecurity plan has in the past been sensible business practice under the sharemilker/farm owner model, now it’s an imperative, Wilding said.

Federated Farmers Sharemilkers chairman Richard McIntyre said there is plenty of advice on the DairyNZ website, including the kinds of questions that need to be asked if new stock is coming onto the farm.

“But there should also be discussion about how the farm will function in the

medium and longer term from a biosecurity perspective.

“Even relatively simple stuff should be in the plan. For example, if you or a neighbour intends grazing stock in paddocks where there is a boundary fence, you could send them a text. One of you can then put up a break fence to keep herds from direct contact.

“Another example – there should be agreement about service bulls. Will the farm be all AI or will it get service bulls from a farm that fits ‘x’ and ‘y’ biosecurity requirements, such as a closed Hereford breeding operation, or an operation that does not bring in dairy beef? Or do the two parties agree that’s not particularly important?”

The advice on the DairyNZ page can be used as a conversation starter and checklist. “Good due diligence by both parties, and a robust biosecurity plan, will underpin a continuing, viable sharemilking industry,” McIntyre said.

Avocados smash records New Zealand food prices slipped in May as record high prices for avocados and increased meat prices were offset by weaker prices for mandarins, kiwifruit and tomatoes.

Statistics NZ said food prices fell a seasonally adjusted 0.1 per cent in May from April as rises in meat, poultry and fish prices were offset by falls in fruit and vegetable prices – except for avocados which hit a record average price for a 200g avocado of $5.05, up 37 per cent from April and 50 per cent higher than May last year.

Overall, fruit and vegetable prices declined 2 per cent in May from the previous month, influenced by a 35 per cent drop in mandarins, 39 per cent fall in kiwifruit and 6.5 per cent drop in tomatoes.

Meat, poultry and fish prices gained 0.8 per cent, led by a 6.1 per cent gain in chicken and a 7.2 per cent increase in lamb.

Avocado prices reflected both higher prices and smaller fruit, with the New Zealand Avocado Growers’ Association noting harvest volumes in the year to June were down to around half that for the previous season.

“Seasonality impacts avocado prices,”

Stats NZ prices manager Matthew Haigh said.

“Typically, avocado prices peak in July and August, as the main harvest season is from August to March.”

Food prices fell 0.1 per cent in the year to May, influenced by a 10 per cent drop in fruit and vegetable prices as lettuce prices fell 52 per cent, tomatoes dropped 24 per cent and broccoli slipped 43 per cent.

Stats NZ said the falls follow large price increases in 2017, as New Zealand growers lost crops due to poor weather.

Despite the overall price fall, there were increases in restaurant meals and readyto-eat food prices, up 2.9 per cent, and non-alcoholic beverage prices, up 4.6 per cent.

The minimum wage increase of 75 cents to $16.50 an hour on April 1, 2018 may be a partial factor for these price increases, the statistics agency said.

The food price index accounts for about 19 per cent of the consumers’ price index, which is the Reserve Bank’s mandated inflation target when setting interest rates.

Restaurant Brands New Zealand has inked a master franchise agreement with Yum! Brands for the continued operation of the Pizza Hut brand in New Zealand.

The 10-year agreement will see Restaurant Brands responsible for day-to-day administration of the Pizza Hut brand in New Zealand, supporting existing independent franchisee-owned stores and developing new outlets.

The local firm will continue to run marketing and operations for the brand in New Zealand and will step into the position of fran-

chisor to existing independent franchisees, and provide development support to new franchisees.

The new deal, which Restaurant Brands had previously flagged, will see it receive a portion of the franchise fees payable by independent franchisees to Yum! Louisville, Kentucky-based Yum! Brands owns the Pizza Hut, KFC and Taco Bell brands and is the world’s largest fast-food restaurant company.

In New Zealand, Restaurant Brands is the country’s largest fast-food operator with the KFC,

Pizza Hut, Starbucks Coffee and Carl’s Jr brands.

In recent years it has been selling its regional and lower volume Pizza Hut stores to independent franchisees and at the end of the company’s first quarter it owned 33 Pizza Hut stores in New Zealand, with 65 operated by independent franchisees, bringing the total network to 98 stores.

The company’s shares last traded at $7.97, and have increased in value by a third over the past year.

Record-breaking kiwifruit harvest More land with easy access to water is high on Zespri’s wishlist as the blue chip national kiwifruit export marketer continues its winning streak with record harvests and sales.

Chief executive Dan Mathieson told a media gathering at Fieldays near Hamilton that while the company is on an export roll there were headwinds ahead including biosecurity risks and an acute labour shortage while more land was needed to meet the world’s appetite for new Zespri gold fruit variety Sungold.

The industry was particularly focused on the need for water re-

sources as it grows, he said.

The 2018 kiwifruit harvest is drawing to a close with “everything in a box” by June 25, he said.

“The quality is really good and the taste of green (fruit) is the best in four or five years.”

Mathieson attributed the bumper harvest to good growing conditions and growers’ hard work in the orchards, including ensuring fruit was exposed to light. Export sales of green fruit were to date two million trays ahead of last season, and Sungold sales 10 million trays ahead.

In the orchards, 10 million more trays had been harvested than last

year and green fruit trays were likely to surpass this increase.

In total 66m trays of Sungold would be harvested with green fruit in the high 70m, Mathieson said.

“All markets are doing well. A lot more Sungold is going into Europe and another non-traditional market doing well is the USA.” Zespri had committed to plant 700 more hectares of Sungold fruit every year for the next five years, compared to 400ha a year previously, Mathieson said.

The industry employed 18,000 people currently and by 2030 was tipped to need 29,000.

Trump earns credit Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says President Donald Trump deserves credit for having a “red-hot go” at denuclearising the Korean peninsula.

But the prime minister sounded a note of warning about Kim Jong Un’s level of commitment to getting rid of its nuclear weapons.

North Korea has regularly signed denuclearisation agreements since 1992, only to continue to develop nuclear weapons in secret.

“There have been many disappointments along the road to denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula. It clearly hasn’t occurred,” Turnbull told reporters in Canberra.

“So he’s giving it a red-hot go. We welcome it, but we do so clear-eyed and with caution.”

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said the focus was now on North Korea’s response.

“The test now is this declaration that was signed with the US President in front of the world’s media that must stand, and the onus now is on North Korea to prove that it’s genuine,” she told reporters.

That four-point agreement had scant detail about how to verify any steps North Korea takes toward complete and irreversible denuclearisation.

It also did not mention points raised later by Trump around the abduction of Japanese citizens, human rights abuses or the withdrawal of US troops.

Bishop doesn’t believe the non-inclusion of those points means Kim isn’t open to further discussions.

“It was one meeting and we should never have expected that everything would be resolved in one meeting,” she said, adding it could take months or years of further work.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten agreed the summit was a positive step forward, “even if some of the images were certainly unusual”.

“I wouldn’t be opening the champagne bottles and popping the corks. People have been down this road before, but I’m not also going to be unduly negative,” Shorten told reporters in Perth.

Denuclearisation will be the first step

Spacey back on screen Kevin Spacey will return to the big screen at least one more time in the wake of sexual misconduct allegations with an appearance in the upcoming film Billionaire Boys Club. The disgraced Oscar winner was removed from 2017’s All The Money In The World and Netflix sacked him from House Of Cards following the allegations. But a newly released trailer for Billionaire Boys Club, filmed more than two years ago and due to be released next month, confirms Spacey has kept his role in the film.

He will play Ron Levin, a con artist who masterminded a Ponzi scheme in 1980s.

Banksy’s new artwork Banksy has unveiled a piece of art based on Brexit and the EU referendum. The anonymous street artist posted a picture of the work on social media. He said he previously submitted an early version of it to the Royal Academy’s summer exhibition under a pseudonym that was an anagram of Banksy, but that it was turned down. The artwork is now in the gallery. It features a Vote To Leave poster with a heart-shaped balloon covered in plasters hovering over the “e” and “a” in Leave, transforming the slogan into Vote To Love.

George H. W. Bush celebrates 94 years George H. W. Bush enjoyed a relaxing birthday on Tuesday as he became the first former US president to turn 94.

The nation’s 41st president was receiving calls and taking it easy at his seaside home eight days after being released from a hospital where he was treated for low blood pressure, said Chief of Staff Jean Becker.

Bush’s office shared a letter from the president in which he said, “My heart is full on the first day of my 95th year.”

“As many of you know, for years I have said the three most important things in life are faith, family and friends. My faith has never been stronger,” the former president wrote in the letter.

Several of his children were in town, including former President George W. Bush, who posted a smiling photo of the two of them on Instagram.

“I’m a lucky man to be named for George Bush and to be with ‘41’ on his 94th birthday,” wrote Bush, the 43rd president.

The Central Intelligence Agency marked Bush’s birthday by releasing declassified material related to his tenure as the agency’s director from January 1976 to January 1977.

The items include a video about his path to becoming CIA director and another about his farewell visit to the agency employees in January 1993, the final month of his presidency.

Ed checks for newts Ed Sheeran has commissioned experts to check for great crested newts around his UK estate where he plans to build a private chapel. The 27-year-old English singer-songwriter, who announced his engagement to long-time girlfriend Cherry Seaborn in January, has submitted a planning application for the Saxonstyle structure to Suffolk Coastal District Council. But a string of concerns have been raised, including some about great crested newts in the area in 2015. It was possible that ponds within the site boundaries “could be breeding sites for this species”.

Yes it was at home, and yes it was against the Methven blind golfers society, but a win is a win.

Some things remain the same though, Spud and the Flying Dutchman still both posted gallant losses, but Brucey, Paddy and Tim had great wins and Vince managed to talk his opponent into submission.

Can you all feel that? I think it’s the wind of change.

Onwards and upwards.

We won’t mention the Redpath and Alex teams, apart from to say that young Wilson made his debut for the Alex and posted a great win, just a pity he couldn’t play all six positions. Anyway, back to the important golf.

Terry Molloy and Robert Pawsey had a great win over Jeff Williamson and Bill Hetrick to pick up the much sort after Watson Cup. Then Charlie Alexander and Noel Sutton put Hamish Niles and Brent MacGregor to the sword to lift the Newton Trophy.

Well done to all the finalists.

The RMF Cup leader board is tightening up at the top. After six rounds Sam Clarke and Phil Kerr sit in the lead both with 34 points, closely followed

by Sa, Hamish, Lefty and Blair. You can already see the cream rising.

Don’t forget you need to be in the top 30 after 16 rounds to qualify for the 3 round final series. With the winner after 19 rounds picking up his club sub from the great folk at Russell Moon and Fail.

This Saturday we have a stroke round with 12 RMF points to win, as well as being a qualifier for the Presidents Trophy. The top 16 nett scores go into matchplay knockout over the next four weeks. If you don’t wish to be in the matchplay then please let the starter know.

The card draw seems to be working ok, but we always like feedback, good or bad. If you have any comments please send to the match committee.

Good Golfing

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club Our Petanque is still having quite good turnouts on Tuesday and Thursday social afternoons over the winter months. Some of the keen ones come earlier and fit in an extra game before our official starting time at 1.30.

We had 10 of our members take part in the Queens birthday Tournament in Christchurch, and Johnny Wright one of our members along with a Christchurch player won the championship. She showed she was a very worthy player and this was the first time she had played in a Tournament that wasn’t on home ground. In fact seven of our players got placings at different levels.

We also had 10 of our players participating in the Winter Drawn Triples at Ascot on June 9. Richard Browne and his 2 Ascot partners were the champions on the day, and Rllrn Pithie and her partners were runners up. Six other members were also placed.

A very good effort from our members.

The next few weeks will be quieter for our competitive members as out next tournament isn’t until mid-July. Meantime we will happily enjoy our club days.

Cavendish Club President’s Choice This was a very enjoyable music afternoon. We

had our very own Ashburton lady “Moyra Whiting to entertain us. Moyra brought along many small musical instruments for us all to participate in playing them while Moyra played the piano. We had sheets of songs handed round so we all had no excuse to have a great sing-a-long. Such a lovely light-hearted happy afternoon was enjoyed by everyone. We then all enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea.

Music Circle It has been lovely to see record crowds at our two Music Circle afternoons in both March and May. In March Moyra Whiting spoke on her busy but interesting life of teaching and moving to different schools with husband Rex. Moyra’s love of music paved the way to both children’s and adult choirs of which she is well known for and always to a very high standard.

Having a little time out from her busy life doesn’t mean stopping as she is enjoying entertaining others and is very well known for her entertainment in retirement homes in Ashburton. Moyra played us a few well known songs on piano, followed by afternoon tea, a lot of happy chatter and a small gift of appreciation.

In May Elaine Vallender spoke on her years teaching at the Ashburton College and how music has brought her so much pleasure.

Music certainly makes the world a better place and as for both Elaine and her husband Glenn that has been the case with them both being so involved with music and shows in Ashburton from day one.

Janet thanked Elaine and presented her with a small gift. Afternoon tea was a busy time as Elaine is very well known and so many wanted to talk to her. Ashburton is so lucky to have such dedicated people as Moyra and Elaine who have given so much back into the community. Thank you both very much.

Combined Meeting - One Friday recently we were invited by the County Club men to join with them for a fish and chip meal. We met as usual midafternoon and played “Beetles”, which was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone, then at 5pm the men and partners joined us for the meal. We had a very happy couple of hours socialising with them and our husbands.

Run and Walk Ashburton Some 25 runners, 6 walkers, 15 children and many spectators gathered at the Tinwald Domain for the annual Cross Country Norrie Cup on Saturday June 9. Run and walk Ashburton were joined by members from Run Timaru, and Geraldine Clubs.

The course was a 2km loop with one creek crossing. Depending on your age category as to the number of kilometers you completed. The course was enjoyed by young and seasoned members alike.

A great afternoon was had by all who attended and was finished with a hearty afternoon tea and lots of chatter. Tinwald Golf Club Heavier conditions following rain earlier in the week and cool conditions made for some interesting scoring in the first of the qualifying rounds for the RSA Trophy and Plate with a sheepish looking Andrew Barry claiming the top prize in the Senior Grade with a nett 77.

As you can imagine the members present at the prize giving where in a raucous mood following this announcement!

The scoring improved as results through the grades were announced with Paul Hefford claiming top spot in the Intermediate Grade with a 73.

Interestingly the top score of the day came from out of the Junior Grade with Saki Ratumaiyale carding a nett 70 – well done Saki, all that practice during the off season seems to be paying dividends!

Reports were received from the Officers Lunch regarding future Federation events.

Wakanui WI will again be supplying lunch and afternoon tea at the Ploughing Match on June 10.

Members were urged to make themselves available to help supply and serve meals.

Speaker for the afternoon was Bob McDonald from Health 2000 who spoke and displayed remedies for general health and wellbeing and their uses. Members found his information most interesting and asked many questions.

Target Shooting Mid Canterbury How close can you get to the magic 100.10 without actually getting it?

Shania Harrison-Lee can tell you. After doing her duty as range officer on Tuesday night Shania shot a target before leaving for the night. It looked for all money to be a 100.10 but that mean and miserable little guage put one inner out by the tiniest margin. A great shoot just not meant to be.

Coronation Night on Monday saw a good number attend for the first round of the “Captains Ladder” a fun competition which attracts a lot of interest. Wins were recorded by Steve McArthur over T.J. Stewart, Keith Bonnington over Bill Rankin, Coby Snowden over Sam Smith, Michaela Smith over Leo Wildy, Lanelle McArthur over Mark Stewart and Nina McKenzie over Shania Harrison-Lee. Funny that, it’s called the Captain’s ladder because the Captain decides the manner and rules on any particular night, Nina is the club captain. Need I say more?

On Tuesday night the Phoenix club held a drawn pairs match where shooters using a rest were paired with a shooter shooting from the sling. Richard Pearce and Wayne McIntosh emerged winners in this keenly fought competition.

Many of the coaches from Coronation also took part so it was a great opportunity for the newcomers to see the coaches in action. Michaela Smith organised and ran the event which was great fun and enjoyed by many.

On a more serious note this weekend will see many of the competitive shooters heading off to Christchurch on either Friday night or Saturday to take part in the Canterbury open Championship leading up to our own Coronation open championship on Sunday. Best of luck and “shoot well”.

Black type prospect trials well A New Zealand-bred and owned mare with a tidy Australian record will be on a stakes mission in the spring for champion horsemen Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman.

Your Way stepped out at the Taupo trials on Tuesday and thrilled caretaker trainer Mark Lupton with her effort for second in an open heat over 1050m.

The daughter of Thewayyouare and the Listed winner Fiorenza won seven of her 12 starts in New South Wales for Baker’s son Bjorn before her return.

“Bjorn thought she would win a Group race over there, but she got a couple of bad viruses so we brought her back here to see if she still wants to be a racehorse,” Lupton said.

“She trialled really well and she’s come through it brilliantly.

She’s still about 15kg too heavy, but I saw what I wanted to see at Taupo and her blood is spot on – she looks sensational.”

Your Way, who has won on good and heavy tracks in Australia, is nominated for the open sprint at Ruakaka on Saturday but won’t be heading north.

“The only reason I put her in was if Taupo was put off,” Lupton

“He’s back in work and building up slowly,” trainer Lauren Brennan said. “We’d like to get him to Hawke’s Bay for the first couple of races in the spring series.” She was referring to the Gr.1 Makfi Challenge Stakes (1400m) and the Gr.1 Windsor Park Plate (1600m).

Expectations are high for the spring campaign of the multiple winner Yearn. “I’ve always thought next season would be her best,” part-owner Mark Lupton said.

Trained by Karen Fursdon, Yearn has won five of her 18 starts and was spelled following her effort for sixth at Awapuni in the Listed Flying Handicap (1400m) at the end of March. “Things didn’t go right for her there so we turned her out,” Lupton said. “She looks terrific and there are plenty of options in the spring to try and get that elusive black type with her.”

Young boxers bring home gold medals Three boys from the Mid Canterbury Boxing Academy were in action at the South Island Golden Gloves last weekend and each one of them came home with a gold medal.

The youngest – 10-year-old Dayton Fomison – fought in his first official bout in the novice under 34kg category and won, while the oldest – 16-year-old Toby Woolf – defended the novice under 60kg title he won last year. This year he had to face a different opponent to win the title, but he still dominated with his tall 185cm frame and long reach.

Also fighting was 11-year-old Ricky Sooaemalelagi, who won the novice under-54kg section. Sooaemalelgai had fought in three bouts leading up to the Golden Gloves, losing his first to a fellow Ashburton boxer, but winning his second and third against boxers from Christchurch.

Mid Canterbury Boxing Academy head coach Cornelius Grobler was impressed with the results of all three at the Cashmere Club in Christchurch.

The Mid Canterbury Boxing Academy was as much about mentoring young kids and teaching life skills as it was about boxing. They’d had about 90 boys go through the gym this year but only about eight wanted to compete.

“These boys just love being mentored and love being in the gym,” Grobler said.

■ INDOOR BOWLS

Locals still in hunt for national titles Ashburton indoor bowlers continued their good week of success at the National Championships yesterday with a number of players from the district advancing to today’s knockout stage of the championship triples at the EA Networks Centre.

Michael Lawson’s side, featuring himself, former Ashburton player Simon Thomas and current New Zealand representative Daniel French from Otago will be marked as one of the teams to beat in the Open competition.

They overcame a slight mishap when they lost their third game yesterday morning but bounced back to qualify by winning their fourth and final match to secure the required three wins to make it to the knockout stage.

They will be joined by Grant Wilson, Fiona Keegan and Murray Bassett who also had a scare in the middle stages of the qualifying process but managed to still get the three wins needed.

Also in action in the Open event will be Matt and Jeremy Markham who are playing out of the St Pauls Club in Christchurch alongside James Sullivan.

They suffered a heavy defeat in their first match of the morning but got things back on track with three good wins to qualify.

All three players made it to the quarterfinal stage of the pairs on Tuesday.

All counted, 37 triples combinations qualified for post-section play which begins at 8.30am this morning.

An even stronger representation of Ashburton will be found in the Masters Triples which will be played alongside the Open event.

Defence key in win Ashburton College senior boys’ basketball team dealt Cathedral College a reality check in the secondary school Thompson Trophy on Tuesday, beating them 78-56.

Coach Brian Kerr had a full quota with Quinn Ritchie and Fotu Hala returning from injury and the pair showed they were ready, leading the point scoring with 14 and 18 respectively.

The game started frenetically with Cathedral employing both man to man presses and zone presses. College countered with pressure on the ball as both teams tried to establish ascendency.

College did struggle to get their offence going but a couple of three-pointers from Abel Wilson kept them handy.

The second quarter saw the College guards begin to up the defensive tempo and as has been in previous games Sam Pearce combined well with Ritchie and Marc Juntilla to pressure the Cathedral guards to create turnovers.

The return of Hala gave an additional rebounding boost as he claimed numer-

ous rebounds. The fast break game began to emerge as outlet passes began finding the speedy guards. This allowed College to take a seven-point lead at the break.

The third quarter was the telling quarter for Ashburton College as the intensity of their defence and the skill and speed of their fast break started to take the game away from Cathedral and they led by 18 points going into the final quarter. They consolidated to win by 22 points.

“The whole team was defensively strong and each player was instrumental in getting this win,” Kerr said.

He singled out Penuel Pantaleon for his energetic and aggressive defence, and Hala for his rebounding.

“The ability to transition quickly to the fast break and outlet to the guards on break was awesome. Some of the best passing I’ve seen.”

The senior girls lost to Kaiapoi High School 60-52. Coach Mark Douglas said finishing was a problem and the game had been winnable.

France stuns Baby Blacks The French under 20 side have shown their senior team how to beat New Zealand following a dominant display over the Baby Blacks in the semifinals at the World Championships.

New Zealand went into the game as six-time winners of the tournament as well as defending champions but failed to fire a shot in their 16-7 defeat.

France will play England in Monday’s final while the Baby Blacks will face South Africa in the bronze medal game. It will be France’s first ever appearance in the Under 20 championship final while England are three-time winners of the event.

The French scrum dominated throughout the encounter with prop Demba Bamba and number eight Jordan Joseph standout performers.

New Zealand were the heavy favourites going into the semifinal in Perpignan having scored 19 tries and conceding

just three during pool play but amazingly they failed to breech the French 22m until the final quarter of the game.

The last time the two sides clashed was at the same stage in last year’s tournament when New Zealand won 39-26.

France held a 3-0 halftime lead before crossing over for the only try of the game shortly after halftime when Romain Ntamack, son of French great Emile Ntamack, scored.

Louis Carbonel converted the Ntamack try and added two further penalties in the second half to extend the lead to 16-0.

New Zealand finally crossed over in the 70th minute when first-five Harry Plummer scored in the left-hand corner before converting his own try.

Minutes later New Zealand looked set for a second before a fumble close to the line squandered a chance with numbers out wide.

Wales eye Robertson It’s almost guaranteed another New Zealander will succeed Warren Gatland as Wales rugby coach.

Wayne Pivac and Dave Rennie have been linked to the role and the Guardian reports Crusaders coach Scott Robertson is also a contender.

Welsh Rugby Union chief executive Martin Phillips says the shortlist is more than two, and it’s the same one they’ve had for a while.

“We will get the coach done

this summer,” Phillips said. He said there were plenty of meetings and negotiations to come.

Wales have had a strong New Zealand coaching influence since Sir Graham Henry took over in 1998.

Golfers off to nationals

Ashburton College’s golf team has qualified for the national secondary schools’ championships for the first time in more than a decade.

The team of Brent Kirdy, Wilson Hii, Josh Ackerley and Brayden Wood took on a strong side from Christchurch’s St Andrew’s College at the Templeton Golf Club on Monday, with the winner off to September’s nationals.

After a long day of golf in miserable conditions, Ashburton College came out on top – meaning

they became the first Ashburton College side to head to the nationals since 2005 when a side spearheaded by Daniel Pearce took on the country’s best young golfers.

Aorangi Golf community golf manager Malcolm Wood said the rules had changed in terms of who could compete at the nationals in a bid to ensure the quality of the field taking part. That meant that the winners of the Aorangi region’s secondary school golf title now had to take on the third qualifying team from Christchurch and win to earn the right to attend.

For Ashburton College to win the Aorangi title was big, given the competition had been dominated by Timaru’s Roncalli College in recent years, and for them to then go on and topple a quality Christchurch school side was huge, Wood said.

Wood said St Andrew’s had two players on sub-10 handicaps and another in the low teens, but conditions on Monday were wet and miserable, and Ashburton College’s young side handled the conditions better.

“The boys weren’t that sure

about themselves going up there and playing them because they have some talent up there,” Wood said. “But they pulled one out of the bag and beat them.”

Wood said it was a particularly special win for Kirdy, who was in his last year of secondary school.

Kirdy’s handicap heading into the match was 7.9, while Ackerley’s was 8.4, Wood’s was 12.9 and Hii’s was 25.9.

Ackerley produced the day’s best score, shooting a round of 78, while Kirdy shot an 84. The best three scores counted towards

the overall result, with Ashburton College’s total of 265 beating St Andrew’s on 270.

Wood said Aorangi Golf would assist Ashburton College with additional coaching ahead of the national secondary school champs in Hastings in September.

He said the competition on the national stage would be tough.

When Roncalli attended last year they faced a team featuring a player whose handicap was plus-5.

“All four of their team were subthree handicaps, so you are getting the best of the best.”
