A 23-year-old logging contractor suffered serious injuries at the Rakaia Gorge yesterday when a bulldozer rolled down a steep slope. Emergency services rushed to the scene about 10.20am yesterday and the man was treated by intensive care paramedics from the Westpac rescue helicopter. The helicopter could not land because of the steep terrain and the man was winched onboard and transferred to Christchurch Hospital. He is in a serious condition. Methven police constable Mike Seque said it appeared the 36 tonne bulldozer was anchoring a log loader working 200m down the terrace when it toppled over. The dozer rolled until coming to rest on a small knoll near the loader. Mr Seque said it would have kept rolling another 200 metres to the bottom of the terrace if it had not struck the knoll. The injured contractor was “incredibly lucky” to survive. A spokesman for the Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust said he was not inside the loader at the time and was trapped for a time. WorkSafe’s investigation team, who confirmed they were making inquiries, but could not provide any further detail last night. The contractors had been milling trees on the terrace near Rakaia River Road, which drops away to a section of flat land, and then the riverbed.
