Concerns over firearms safety have sparked a warning from Mid Canterbury police. Police are becoming increasingly concerned over the number of firearms owners who are not abiding by the law and securing their guns safely. There are between 13,000 and 14,000 firearms licence holders in Mid/South Canterbury, according to police. Firearms officer John Wainwright says police found many people were not securing firearms safely, which was concerning “given recent events in Ashburton”. Police were also becoming frustrated with the number of firearms owners failing to notify them of changes to their address. A New Zealand firearms licence is valid for 10 years. When the licence is about to expire, police contact the licence owner to remind them to renew it. Police re-vet the licence owner, speak to referees, and re-inspect their security, Mr Wainwright said. However that proved tricky when people changed their address without notice.

“One of the things we’re finding a bit annoying is there seems to be a constant stream of people who are forgetting to notify us when they shift,” he said. While it may seem like a minor infraction, Mr Wainwright said people needed to be aware that it was actually an offence under the Firearms Act. “We have the ability there, if we want to get grumpy, to put someone in front of a district court judge,” he said. That could lead to a conviction and a hefty fine of up to $500.
