High winds cause havoc BY LINDA CLARKE

High winds caused havoc for emergency services in Mid Canterbury as vegetation fires re-ignited and vehicles struggled to stay on the road. An out-of-control blaze off Blackford Road in the Rakaia Gorge burned about six hectares of farmland before firefighters from the Methven area had it under control, while Ashburton firefighters were called back to the site of a farm burn-off on Mitcham Road to make sure the area was safe. Wind gusting up to 100km/h at times blasted Mid Canterbury from Mt Hutt to the plains, where emergency services responded to four accidents in the space of two hours. Ashburton volunteer firefighters
spent several hours on Tuesday night at the Mitcham Road farm, wetting the area after winds re-ignited a vegetation fire; they were back at 1.30pm yesterday repeating the process. Meanwhile, the Methven, Lauriston and Alford Forest fire appliances were called into Blackford Road about the same time where a previous burn-off had re-ignited. The burn-off grew from an initial burn area of 2ha to 6ha before it was under control. A New Zealand Fires Service spokesman said fire engines from Methven and Lauriston, plus fire tankers from Lauriston, Alford Forest and the Ashburton District Council’s rural unit, had trouble moving on the wet and boggy ground.

But the fire was eventually tamed about 6pm. Driving was also hard going on some roads around the district as winds buffeted vehicles. St John ambulance units attended a crash at the Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road about 1pm where a car left the road. One male patient was assessed at the scene for minor injuries. Paramedics attended another crash at Lismore Mayfield Road about 3.40pm when another car left the road, injuring a male occupant. He was taken to Ashburton Hospital’s emergency department with moderate injuries.
