Cleaver attack in town Police suspect a meat cleaver was used during a violent altercation in Ashburton yesterday.

Police were informed of two men fighting with weapons on William Street at about 7am.

When officers arrived they found two injured men, Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said.

One was taken to Ashburton

Hospital with a gash to the head and cuts. He is in a serious but stable condition.

The other man, who has minor injuries, is assisting police with enquiries.

Police believe a meat cleaver found at the scene was used in the assault.

Investigations are under way.

Amazing maize maze set to open By liNda clarke

Don’t be surprised to see a horde of people traipsing through Randal Hanrahan’s maize crop if you drive by it on State Highway 1 just north of Ashburton these holidays.

They’re not crop inspectors, they are following a path in the maize designed to be a fun maze puzzle.

It is the third maize maze Hanrahan has grown as a fundraiser for Borough School and it opens to the public on Monday.

Hanrahan said it was a challenge planning the maze and planting it, and the design was different to previous years. The crop is sown over 7500 square metres and has several interest points.

The leafy green plants are about 1.5m tall at the moment but will grow another 30cm over the next week.

Hanrahan said the early days

of the maze were more suitable for smaller children when the crop was still growing, but the plants would reach two metres eventually and the maze would also be a challenge for adults.

It will be harvested later in the year.

He said this year’s weather and growing conditions meant the maze could open for the last two weeks of the school holidays and then at weekends until about Easter.

The maze brings in around $5000 for the school through admission fees and ice-cream and drinks sales.

For thrill-seekers, a horror aspect would be added later in the year. The Hanrahans have been building an inventory of scary costumes to add to the scream element.

The maze will be open from 10am-5pm daily until the end of the holidays and then at weekends. Admission is $5 per adult and $3 per child under 15.

Beware of barley grass

While plentiful rain has been conducive to crop growth for the district’s farmers this season, it is causing grief for Ashburton’s dog owners.

Barley grass has also flourished this year. The noxious weed produces spikey seeds capable of burrowing into animal pelts, eyes, ears, and feet which inevitably requires veterinary treatment.

Ashburton woman Gwen Biscoe is concerned about the amount of barley grass in the Ashburton District Council dog park which runs adjacent to the river.

She is a regular user of the park and is careful to check her ageing, long-haired pooch after each visit, however her Christchurch-

based son’s prize doberman recently got barley grass in his eyes at the park, resulting in costly vet bills.

“My dog sticks close to me, but younger dogs love to run up and down the bank, the barley grass is shoulder high up there,” Biscoe said.

The doberman was taken to the vet in distress the day after visiting the dog park, costing $270.

The following day he was worse resulting in another veterinary consultation. He was anaesthetised and a three centimetre piece of barley grass was extracted from behind his eyeball – resulting in another $270.

“I’m a pensioner, if that had happened to my dog I couldn’t afford to pay for it,” Biscoe said.

She posted on social media

to warn others of the peril and emailed a complaint to council.

“There’s no point in going there if I can’t let my dog run free – I may as well throw a ball around in the backyard.”

Lynne and Pete Gowans also use the dog park to exercise their two rottweiller dogs and are careful to check for any barley grass which has adhered to their coats after a visit.

“I’ve found quite a few in Titus’ coat,” Lynne Gowans said.

She is also concerned about the fire risk the long grass presents.

“It’s tinder dry – if it caught fire it would just take off,” she said.

Council open spaces manager David Askin was unaware of the barley grass problem but said now it had been brought to his attention, it would be investigated.

Stars of tomorrow on stage When the curtain rose in the Ashburton Trust Event Centre last night, 120 of Ashburton’s best young singers and dancers wowed the audience with their talent.

The performers were members of the Ashburton Summer Singing School and had spent the past week rehearsing numbers for their end of school show Dreams, Despair and Delight.

Its inspiration is drawn from

the best of the world of musicals over two acts, one performed by the junior ensemble and the other by the seniors. Jo Castelow is the show’s musical director and Alice Sollis its director choreographer.

Last night was opening night and there are two performances today at 2pm and 7.30pm in the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

Winners of the school’s two scholarships will be announced tonight.

Remote rescue successful

A woman is in Southland Hospital’s emergency department being treated for an injury caused by a sea lion pup.

A rescue helicopter evacuated the woman from a remote island about 4.30pm yesterday after she was injured by the pup.

The woman, a senior lecturer from the University of Sydney, had been assisting with Department of Conservation research work on Enderby Island, which is part of the Auckland Island archipelago south of Stewart Island.

DoC’s senior ranger for the subantarctic region, Jo Hiscock, said the woman was swabbing sea lion pups’ mouths when she cut her finger about nine days ago.

The woman’s cut did not respond to antibiotics, so the advice of a doctor visiting with a cruise ship was sought.

The doctor recommended she seek hospital treatment.

“The 800km round-trip is a delicate operation due to the remoteness of the island,” said spokesman John Dickson.

Hiscock said the woman was assisting DoC’s research into the impact of disease in sea lion pups.

A national shortage of women represented as New Zealand company directors is also being felt in Mid Canterbury board rooms.

Gender Diversity figures, released from NZX Limited, show that in the fourth quarter of 2016, NZSX-listed companies reported just 13 per cent of directors were female.

This figure is a drop from the average 2016 ratio of 17 per cent, the same as the previous year.

Fay Watson, who is the Ashburton Licensing Trust president, director of Somerset Ashburton Ltd and Braided Rivers Ltd and trustee of Braided Rivers Trust, said she was conscious of the low representation of women on boards of directors, saying the “glass ceiling is alive and well”.

“We are being limited by the attitudes of both men and women, and we all have a part to play in bringing a change,” she said.

“There is a body of solid research which shows that companies where women are most strongly represented at board or top management level, are also the companies that perform best.

“That’s not to say that boards should be all female, they need to be mixed.”

Watson said the high proportion of women achieving in tertiary study and working, for instance, in law and finance, should be reflected in senior management and directorships.

She felt women were not putting their names forward for positions and traits that were seen as ambitious and positive in men, were often seen negatively in women.

“Any change will be slow to evolve and it needs to come from every direction,” she said.

“Women have a part to play.

Think more broadly about your long-term career goals.

“We need to develop more self-confidence to know you can make a positive contribution, and be prepared to put yourself forward.

“Businesses have a part to play by providing more opportunities to broaden commercial experience and leadership opportunities, recognise talent early and provide mentoring to candidates showing promise, and boards have a part to play because women don’t tend to put themselves out there the

same as men. Boards need to make a conscious effort to go looking for them.”

Anne Marett, who is the director of Croys Chartered Accountants & Business Advisors, the Netball Mainland board chair, and a member of the EA Networks committee board, said the lack of women on boards was an issue.

“And it’s probably worse locally,” she said.

“My theory is that it should be the best person for the job, but I guess it’s hard to get started.”

Marett thought a good place for women interested in taking the opportunity to be represented on boards, was getting involved with sporting organisations.

She said any appointments should be determined on people having the right attributes and education plays an important role in remedying the gap.

Jessie Chan-Dorman, who is represented on the Ashburton Trading Society, Fonterra Shareholders’ Council and the Federated Farmers’ national dairy executive, said it came down to enabling women to get the experience required.

She also felt “thought diver-

sity” was just as important.

“To be good at governance, you need life experience, business experience, management experience, and that can be quite difficult to build if you take time out to raise a family and are therefore a bit older, or drop out altogether,” she said.

She had been involved with the “male-dominated” Federated Farmers for some time, but said it was an industry that should be acknowledged for recognising the role women play.

“You have to earn respect, regardless of gender or ethnicity,” she said.

“Women have a lot to offer and it’s about enabling them to get experience. And it’s fine if they don’t decide to pursue a career too, we don’t say that enough.

“Some women have chosen to have a family and we should celebrate all facets.”

Listed companies are required to include quantitative gender breakdowns of directors and officers in financial year end annual reports.

The figures obtained in the statistics related to 125 listed companies.

Studying his way to success

Connor Leadley considers himself just an average Kiwi kid from a farming family, but there’s nothing ordinary about this Wakanui student when it comes to getting the most out of his school years.

He wrapped up his secondary schooling in December on the highest possible note when he was awarded dux at Christ’s College.

Connor admits he likes nothing better than studying. While some students pour their energies into sport, art or the gym, his happy place is amongst his books, and doing what he likes has had some outstanding rewards.

As a Wakanui School student Connor managed to skip through his primary years in record time and, at the prompting of his teacher, sat an academic test for a scholarship to Christ’s College.

For him the test was purely an academic exercise.

“The only reason I did it was because my teacher wanted me to. It was never on my books to go there,” he said.

For a boy who’d always found it easy to pass tests, the scholarship papers were “pretty unnerving.”

“It was a lot harder than anything I’d done before, but apparently I did really well and I was offered a boarding scholarship,” he said.

That success inspired Connor and he says he felt pretty excited about the opportunities Christ’s College would provide.

He moved from a small rural school to a city school that was an academic hot-bed, plunging him into a world where he was one among many academically

gifted students of his age.

“There was a lot of pressure. I found I was in the bottom half of my classes in Year 9, especially the sciences. Compared to other

kids I was behind, but each year I did better. I worked really hard – at the stuff I enjoyed, science and maths,” he said.

Winning the dux award came

as a total surprise, Connor said.

“No one was really that competitive. You just do your best and whatever happens, happens, but a lot of kids had pretty intense parental pressure. I didn’t.

I’ve been very lucky, my parents are really relaxed about my schooling.”

That he was awarded dux, however, would not have been a surprise to anyone at the prize giving. He also won 11 subject prizes.

He’s leaving Christ’s College with countless awards and having made many good friends, but he’s also leaving with a massive cash kickstart to his university studies, a $45,000 scholarship.

He heads to Otago University this year to undertake health science studies. The scholarship is paid over three years, but is conditional on meeting a high standard each year.

He hopes to study medicine and knows that he’ll have to continue performing at the highest level every year.

Over the summer Connor is working on the family’s farm at Wakanui and that’s a great leveller, he said.

“You can’t get too high and mighty moving cows.”

And he’s continuing studying.

“Other people enjoy going to the gym for three hours a day. I’d hate that, I enjoy studying and the learning process,” he said.

Who will replace John Key at Helensville?

The contest to replace John Key is taking shape with Auckland councillor Linda Cooper announcing her bid to be the National Party candidate in Helensville.

Key’s shock resignation means the Auckland electorate will have a new MP after this year’s general election.

Helensville is a safe National

seat and whoever is selected by the party will likely be on their way to Parliament later this year.

Cooper, a Waitakere ward councillor, told the Herald she had long considered a tilt at Parliament and the timing was now right.

Cooper said she would stay on as a councillor through the selec-

tion and any campaigning process, but would resign if elected to Parliament.

Transport was of major concern to people in Helensville, she said.

“The North Western motorway is the only way in and out of south Rodney. We just really need to offer more transport options.

“It is crucial to people’s quality

of life. They are stuck on that motorway.”

Cooper also wanted to survey people in the area to see if there was demand for new schools in the area.

Another potential candidate is Genelle Bailey, who worked for Key in his Helensville office for almost 10 years. Bailey has recently

put up new profile photos on her Facebook page, commenting, “here we go!”

Rodney local board member Cameron Brewer has ruled out seeking the nomination. He said he had given it some thought, but the timing was not right for his family.

Peters meeting Pike River families New Zealand First leader Winston Peters will meet with Pike families and supporters in Greymouth tomorrow as he continues to push for a reentry into the mine.

“When the event happened the Prime Minister said they would go to the ends of the earth to find out what happened for these people. They have gone back on that,” Peters told the Herald.

The Government is under renewed pressure from Pike River families to prevent stateowned coal miner Solid Energy from permanently sealing the mine on the South Island’s West Coast and preventing reentry to its drift.

The families have cited a report from international mining experts that said the mine could be safe to re-enter and that a new independent entity should be set up to oversee the project.

The mine has been closed since November 2010 after a gas explosion killed 29 workers.

Peters, who worked as a miner in Australia in the 1970s, said in December that he was willing to be one of the first back into the mine.

He also said the issue was a “bottom line” for NZ First and that Prime Minister Bill English “should get through his head right now”.

In a media advisory for Peters’ visit on Sunday, the Pike River families referenced that

pledge, saying they greatly appreciate Peters “making re-entry to the mine drift a bottom line of any coalition deal”.

Asked yesterday if that was the case, Peters said he didn’t want to outline bottom lines to media.

“I’m not going to be getting into situations answering questions about what are bottom lines.

“What I am saying is that we, unlike any other political party, have made it very clear where we stand.

“We don’t want a review, we want the miners to have the right – as their expert advice has told them – to go in as far as is possible.”

Prime Minister Bill English has said the safety reforms that followed a royal commission into the 2010 disaster meant there were strict legal requirements about painting a one-storey house, let alone entering a potentially volatile mine.

Pike River was the “most dangerous workplace in New Zealand”, he said, and approving a re-entry would go against the very health and safety laws passed by Parliament in response to the disaster.

Labour leader Andrew Little has promised the victims’ families that a Labour Government would get an independent assessment of the mine and re-enter it if it was declared safe.

Our toilets among best

Ashburton has finally come of age when it comes to its public toilets.

For decades we made it onto the list of the country’s worst places to make a comfort stop, but this year when AA Traveller checked out New Zealand’s public toilets it put ours on the list of those that scrubbed up best.

Surveys showed that cleanliness was number one with travellers and while we couldn’t match the efforts of Kawakawa with its flowers, art and music, we’ve clearly come a long way since the 1980s and 1990s when our infamous East Street “White House” earned us a reputation as owners of some of the worst toilets in New Zealand.

That toilet block stood where today’s first class facility stands.

It was a crumbling concrete edifice, surrounded by an overgrown hedge and frequented by rats and

years. Initially their owners, the Ashburton District Council, contracted out cleaning and maintenance work and while the customer complaints reduced, there were still people unhappy with the way the toilets were maintained.

About a year ago the council decided to take over the work itself and employ a team of caretakers dedicated to toilet duty.

And it’s paid off, said council open spaces manager David Askin.

“We don’t receive complaints now and in our last public survey our satisfaction rating increased significantly,” he said.

Door counters show the facilities are well used. They average 458 users per day.

In announcing its great loos list, AA put Ashburton in the top group it described as write-home-about loos, along with Cheviot, Geraldine, Kaikoura, Picton, Taihape and Waiouru.

The old toilet was replaced by state-of-the-art Exceloos but they came with a host of problems. Instead of complaining about the insanitary state of the toilets, people were complaining about excessive cleanliness.

The Exceloo’s failing was that the showers, designed to make the units self cleaning, frequently malfunctioned and many a user emerged dripping wet. Doors were also known to fly open at random, leaving customers caught with their pants down.

Christmas elderly wishes 2016

he Christmas spirit is definitely alive in the Ashburton District.

When the Guardian put out a call for people to lend a helping hand to the elderly this festive season, the community responded in large numbers Dozens of people asked for help and dozens of people were keen to give some of their time to make the festive season a little easier for a stranger.

While it is impossible to thank every person individually, our reporters have been out and about taking photos as some of those requests for help were granted.

Guardian reporter Jaime Pitt-MacKay talked to the people who were helped and those who did the helping.

Wishing for clean windows Sometimes a modern house and all of its comforts can create small problems.

That is what Keith Wall and partner Allie discovered with their home, with the house having just too many windows for them to keep clean by themselves.

So when the word was spread about Christmas wishes being granted, they knew that getting the windows washed would be perfect.

Happy to help were Brad Wallis and Eliza Waszczak.

They had seen the requests for help with window washing from quite a few people and knew it was something that they would be able to do.

They got to work and dirty windows were soon no longer a problem for Keith and Allie and their Christmas Wish was granted.

Driver punched in road rage incident

A man was allegedly attacked by a patched Mongrel Mob member in front of his son during a road rage incident in Hamilton yesterday.

A police spokesman said police had received an assault complaint, after the incident on State Highway 1 near Horotiu.

“The victim, a Waikato man, called police from his home to report that he had been attacked by the driver of a car following a traffic altercation.”

The man told police he had been dragged from the car and “punched several times” by a patched Mongrel Mob member.

The victim said the mob

member stopped his car suddenly and hit his car while trying to overtake him.

“He got out and walked up to the window and said ‘what are you doing?’ and spat at me through the window,” the man said.

The man received cuts and bruises to his head.

“It’s just extremely disappointing. My son was there and that’s concerning.”

The victim’s wife said her son was “shaken up” by the ordeal.

Police said several other gang members were reported to be in the other vehicle, which left the scene.

There’s a ray of sunshine with the weekend here but we’re caught in a weather pattern that seems like it’s changing season every day.

This weekend is shaping up to be fine today throughout much of the country.

“Today is looking good. There’s a bit of rain for the far south and West Coast but for most of the country it looks pretty good.”

However another burst of wet and windy weather was set to have people reaching for their umbrellas.

The next front would start in the South Island’s West Coast today before moving up over the North Island tomorrow.

Adams said the next burst of wet weather would mainly affect western regions.

Those south of Taranaki could expect rain while eastern regions would continue to be hammered by strong winds.

He said it was looking particularly windy next week for the bottom of the South Island.

I

guess when you start dating a slightly younger partner and they haven’t got any kids then it’s always on the table you might have them.

I must admit the idea of having more children took a fair bit of getting my head around.

If I’m honest I didn’t know 100 per cent exactly how I’d feel when our wee girl arrived.

I guess that’s when the whole human-nature thing kicks in, because as soon as I laid tear-filled eyes on Maddison, I fell in love all over again.

I was so proud of Manda, who handled the birth amazingly well.

She was expertly assisted by our superb midwife, thanks Biddy.

Yours truly did the best a dumb bloke can at a time when we feel pretty helpless and wish we could take some of the pain away. I must also give the midwives at Ashburton Maternity a shout-out, they were all awesome!

Four weeks later she has changed so much. Touch wood,

we have been very lucky, she seems to be a pretty easygoing baby and a good wee sleeper.

Her arrival time was just about perfect and allowed me plenty of time to help her settle in while on Christmas holidays. I have also been lucky enough to have an ease-back-into-work week this week, which has meant more time at home than normal.

I look forward to getting home and seeing Maddy each day. Our 10-day-early Christmas present is very special.

Kids are not the only path I didn’t think I’d travel down again, I really didn’t think I’d ever get mar-

ried again, but I’m going to, well unless Manda comes to her senses before we get the job done.

Manda is from a very close family, they are great, so I wanted to include them in the proposal somehow.

After I got her father’s approval, I set about planning it.

The family had agreed to secret Santa gifts on Christmas Day. I found out that Manda’s mum had drawn her out of the hat. I asked her to keep her present to the side and I had a special one to replace it with initially. She, of course, knew straight away what it was as her hubby had told her I had

asked for permission.

Only one other person knew about my plan, Carol Johns.

I picked up the ring I had selected from my mate in the Arcade and dropped it around to Carol’s place with instructions to continue wrapping it in several, progressively bigger, boxes.

On the day it worked out perfectly, my kids, Josh and McKenzie, had arrived just in time and Manda was last to unwrap her gift. Just before she was given the pressie, I whispered in her sisterin-law’s ear, “please record Manda opening her present”.

I was sitting on the chair beside

Manda and was subconsciously creeping forward on the chair with every box unwrapped. As she opened the last box and then flipped open the ring box, I hopped on to my knee. I looked up at Manda with intentions of saying something poetic like “The beat of my heart is like a drum, but it’s lost looking for a rhythm like you” but as soon as I saw her tears, I blurted out will you make me the happiest man alive and marry me. That was tough enough, choking back my own tears. Yes, I’ve turned into a soft you know what.

She said YES! The men clapped and smiled and the women clapped and cried. Manda’s family were all stoked, as were my kids. In fact McKenzie said we couldn’t get a better stepmum. Nice!

Christmas 2016 is going to take some topping.

Seven dead in bombing A suspected suicide bomber has killed at least seven people in a high security area of the Syrian capital, Damascus, state TV has said.

Police said the attack happened in the Kafr Sousa neighbourhood where some of the country’s key security installations are located.

Footage showed destroyed cars and the security forces deploying in force in the aftermath of the bombing.

It is feared the number of dead is likely to rise.

Several people are critically wounded, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said.

The Kafr Sousa area lies south of Damascus and is home to several senior ministers and top officials, but sources told the AFP news agency that the blast took place away from where they live.

Despite a respite from the rail strikes, London could still come to a standstill as snow began to fall in the capital.

Motorists and ferry passengers are also facing disruption while some schools have been closed due to the bad weather.

Meanwhile, dozens of seaside evacuations are under way amid a flooding threat from storms and high tides.

It comes as communities along the east coast of England are being warned of the risk of large waves and possible flooding as gale-force winds combine with high tides.

US troops enter Poland; Russia nervous American soldiers rolled into Poland yesterday, fulfilling a dream some Poles have had since the fall of communism in 1989 to have US troops on their soil as a deterrent against Russia.

Some people waved and held up American flags as US troops in tanks and other vehicles crossed into southwestern Poland from Germany and headed toward the town of Zagan, where they will be based.

them in an official ceremony today.

“This is the fulfilment of a dream,” said Michal Baranowski, director of the German Marshall Fund think tank in Warsaw. “And this is not just a symbolic presence but one with a real capability.”

US and other Western nations have carried out exercises on Nato’s eastern flank in past years, but the new deployment – which includes some 3500 US troops – marks the first-ever continuous de-

ployment to the region by a Nato ally.

It is part of a larger commitment by President Barack Obama to protect a region that grew deeply nervous when Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and then began backing separatist rebels in Ukraine’s east.

There are fears, however, that the enhanced security could eventually be undermined by the pro-Kremlin views of President-elect Donald Trump.

“These actions threaten our interests, our security,” President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said yesterday. “Especially as it concerns a third party building up its military presence near our borders. It’s not even a European state.”

Worries about the permanence of the new US security commitments are rooted in a tragic national history in which Poland has often lost out in deals made by the great powers.

Scientist keeps cool head Some people spend their summer holiday on a beach, but scientist Natalie Robinson spent hers at Antarctica researching climate change as part of a Niwa project gathering information to help scientists understand why Antarctic sea ice has been expanding despite a warming ocean.

T

op of Dr Natalie Robinson’s to-do list right now is to work out exactly what she’s brought back from Antarctica.

The Niwa marine physicist spent five weeks on the ice this summer leading a team of researchers trying to solve one of the great conundrums facing scientists researching climate change: why has Antarctic sea ice been expanding despite it forming in a warming ocean?

Robinson may just have part of the answer but right now it lies within the massive amount of information that must now be pored over and analysed following her trip south.

“The first thing I’ve got to do is work out what I’ve got. We have come back with an enormous amount of data, which is fantastic because it was a risky experiment – you put things in the water and then you have to wait to see what happens.”

The team were based on sea ice in McMurdo Sound, 60km from Scott Base. Eight converted shipping containers became home, two with removable floors so they could drill into the ice to access the ocean below.

Under the three metres of sea ice at the front of the ice shelf, they discovered a six metres thick layer of ice crystals, known as platelet ice, that form in water that is supercooled – or colder than freezing – when it rises towards the surface. This supercooled water contributes to thickening of sea ice, especially near the coast.

Part of Robinson’s Marsdenfunded project involves testing how the crystals affect turbulence and heat transfer in the upper ocean as they grow and cluster together in this supercool water.

“We targeted the area where

the water flows out from under the ice shelf. The idea was that, close to the ice shelf there’d be lots of ice crystals, and as you move away from the ice shelf, that layer of crystals would get thinner. I couldn’t really be sure what I’d find, but it was great that we got as much as six metres to work with.

“About 50km further north I conducted another experiment looking at flow speeds around a grounded iceberg. There the platelets were about half a metre thick although we don’t know yet if that’s directly connected to the six metres we got at the edge of the ice shelf.”

The team also set up moored instruments at three different sites on the sea ice, again by drilling a 25cm diameter hole down through the ice. The platelet crystals were cleared out of the hole scoop by scoop – a process that took about an hour. Then a line, suspended from a tripod, on which 15 autonomous instruments were attached to collect data on temperature, salinity and currents at down to 250 m was fed through each hole.

Team member, NIWA marine physics technician Brett Grant – a veteran Antarctic visitor - said conditions were perfect, and the team was able to achieve more than they had expected.

“Natalie had a very ambitious

plan and in normal conditions we wouldn’t have been able to achieve it, but we didn’t lose a single day to bad weather.”

There were, however, several issues to overcome. Because the water is so cold, ice forms on the ropes, as well as on the instruments themselves, and also can make the holes freeze up, potentially trapping the instruments.

But, as Grant says, Antarctica is an amazing place to work.

“It’s great to be in an environment where there is so much support for collaborating and working to get the most out of the New Zealand and international research programmes.

Everyone pulls together when it comes to field logistics and technical challenges to make things happen.”

Robinson’s first deadline for her work is a conference in February so by then she will be several mini steps closer to solving her part of the puzzle.

Ultimately her research will provide new information that can be fed into climate models, improving the simulation of our future climate.

“One of the outstanding challenges of climate modelling is to get the trends in the growth of Antarctic sea ice correct,” she says, “and this is what we think we can

■ Heat the oil in a heavy based saucepan (or high-sided fry pan) over a medium heat. Saute the poppy and mustard seeds until they begin to pop. Turn the heat down and add the onion.

Saute until the onion begins to colour. Add the garlic followed by the spices. Cook these for 3-5 minutes until they give off their aroma.

■ Add peas, tomatoes, tamarind paste in water and par-cooked potatoes to the spice mix and

bring to a simmer.

■ Add the diced Tegel Fresh Chicken Skin on Thighs and simmer, covered, for 10-15 minutes or until the chicken is cooked and potatoes are tender. You may need to add up to half a cup more of water during the cooking time.

■ Serve with crispy papadoms, cabbage and rice.

Rising rowing star Veronica Wall has been named as a finalist for Canterbury Young Sportswoman of the Year.

BY MATT MARKHAM Ashburton rower, Veronica Wall has been named as a finalist for Canterbury Young Sportswoman of the Year.

The Ashburton College student, who has taken the rowing world by storm, was named as one of four finalists in the category this week joining fellow stars; Jessie Anderson (Hockey), Lily Marshall

(Netball) and Kate Smith (Cycling).

The announcement from Sports Canterbury this week is just another in a long list of achievements for the rising rowing star as she continues her whirlwind elevation up the ranks of rowing.

2016 was a big year for Wall.

Her four gold medals at the Maadi Cup on Lake Ruataniwha

near Twizel caught the attention of plenty including Canterbury Rowing legend John Wylie.

“She’s a very long, powerful, methodical, maximum-effort rower.

She has long strokes and takes it right through to the body,” he said after her Maadi Cup efforts.

“She works every inch of the way and she’s a very powerful young lady.”

Wall’s list of victories at the

Maadi Cup came courtesy of capturing the under-16, under-17 and under-18 single sculls titles, to go along with another first placing in the under-18 coxed quadruple sculls with her Ashburton College crew.

Already crowned Aoraki Sportswoman of the Year, Wall will be favoured to go close to claiming the title at the March 3 awards – a night where she will get to mix

it with some of the big names of sport. Paralympian Sophie Pascoe will be heavily favoured to win the Supreme Sportswoman of the Year award while All Blacks captain, Kieran Read should claim the Sportsman title.

Former Ashburton swimming coach, Roly Crichton is a finalist for coach of the year, largely through his efforts with multiple Paralympic champion, Pascoe.

Bangladesh take Black Caps apart A record-breaking partnership by Bangladesh pair Shakib al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim put their side firmly in charge of the first test against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve today.

The duo put on 359 for the fifth wicket and slaughtered the New Zealand attack as Bangladesh reached 542 for seven at stumps on day two of the match.

Shakib was dismissed for 217 shortly before stumps, the highest score by a Bangladeshi in test cricket and the third player from his country to complete a double century.

When the partnership ended, with a tired shot by captain Mushfiqur at 159 - like Shakib, completing his fourth test ton - the pair were only 46 runs behind 71-yearold record for the fifth wicket, held by Australia’s Don Bradman and Sid Barnes, from Sydney in 1946.

It was the best fifth wicket stand in all tests in New Zealand, and fourth highest in history and best for any wicket by Bangladesh batsmen.

New Zealand were taken apart by the pair who got their runs from 494 deliveries.

Shakib, who had been dropped on four late on the wind blown abbreviated first day by Mitchell Santner at square leg, survived a controversial moment on 137.

He appeared to be caught down the leg side by wicketkeeper BJ Watling, only for replays to show the ball bobble out of his grasp and touch the ground.

Pivotal week looms for Phoenix Important. Crucial. Massive.

While stopping short of describing the A-League eight-day stretch they’re about to enter as “season-defining”, these are the adjectives which best describe the week ahead for the Wellington Phoenix.

After hosting bottom-placed Central Coast at Westpac Stadium tomorrow, the Phoenix play their rescheduled home game against high-flying Melbourne Victory on Tuesday evening, before meeting Brisbane Roar in a third straight home match next Saturday.

While the season won’t be over if maximum points aren’t gained, or even if just a couple are collected, the next eight days are being taken very seriously by the players and coaching staff.

“It’s a crucial week for us,” said captain Andrew Durante.

“It won’t determine the season, but it’ll play a big part, without doubt. They’re big games. We’ve got to make the most of being (at home).”

“We had two chances over the last two weeks to jump teams and go into fifth spot but we didn’t take them. But now we have to take them. If we’re serious about playing in the finals, we need to take them and we won’t hide away from that,” he said.

The Phoenix have beaten the Mariners in both of their previous clashes this season, winning 2-0 in Canberra in round six, before a comfortable 3-0 victory in Hamilton last month.

Central Coast are without a win in their last six games and have leaked a league-high 31 goals this season, but have shown signs of life in recent weeks, running glamour sides Sydney FC and Melbourne City close in their last two matches.

Having suffered their first loss since taking charge from Ernie Merrick a month ago, newly installed Phoenix coaches Des Buckingham and Chris Greenacre have been plotting the side’s path to play-off football.

“We’re not where we want to be and definitely not where we set out to be at the start of the season,” said Buckingham.

Buckingham and Greenacre have the luxury of an almost fullyfit squad to choose from.

The only absentee is a key man though, with leading scorer Roy Krishna serving a one-game suspension after being sent off against Perth Glory last weekend.

His absence will be balanced by the welcome return to the matchday squad of All Whites midfielder Michael McGlinchey, who hasn’t played since Guy Fawkes night with a knee injury. Gui Finkler has also returned from a trip home to Brazil for personal reasons.

Shane Smeltz will lead the Phoenix line in Krishna’s absence, his first home game since re-signing for the club.

Canterbury swimming championships beckon A group of senior Ashburton swimmers will measure their skills against some of the best in the South Island next week at the Canterbury Swimming Champi-

onships in Dunedin.

Fifteen members of the Jennian Homes Ashburton Swim Team will travel south for the event which sees swimmers

aged 13 years and over competing.

The championships run from Wednesday through to Saturday.

Over the course of the cham-

pionship, 172 swimmers will compete with heats in the mornings before progressing through to the Top eight finals in the afternoon.

Shield Allenton’s to lose

By Matt MarkhaM With one hand already on the Pritchard Shield, Allenton will look to hammer home their advantage in this weekend’s senior cricket action today.

Leading the overall standings by three points, heading into the penultimate round of the Pritchard Shield, a win against Lauriston, who they host this afternoon, Allenton have a chance to claim the title if they can win and their closest rivals, Coldstream, falter against Methven.

Apart from a slight hiccup where they fell to Methven prior to Christmas, Allenton have been unbeatable in the longer format of play and after an extended break over Christmas and New Year they will be champing at the bit to get back out on the pitch today.

Allenton captain Jeff Naish will be looking to his two seasoned stars, Lyall Jemmett and Dylan Stoddart to anchor the ship again with the bat and the ball as they come up against a Lauriston side who will be smarting after their heavy defeat to Coldstream last weekend.

Coldstream get the luxury of playing another match on their home ground when Methven travel south to try and get their season back on track after losing to the Tech Stags last weekend.

Coldstream were dominant against Lauriston recording a big win and with their plethora of quality players will be favoured to take out the match.

Methven have been the sleeping giants of the competition though and have proven that on their day they are capable of winning against any team in the competition.

The last time the two sides played Methven recorded a fourwicket victory on their home turf, chasing down the 203 runs set by Coldstream.

That match was on an artificial wicket at the Methven Domain

with today’s fixture on the more unpredictable Coldstream surface.

If Methven are able to beat Coldstream and Allenton can handle Lauriston then Allenton will win the Pritchard Shield however either a win or a loss by Allenton and a victory for Coldstream will set up an intriguing final round next week.

Joao Sousa advances to final Marcos Baghdatis is out of the ASB Classic, beaten 6-1 7-5 by Joao Sousa.

It was a brilliant display from the Portuguese player, who completely dominated Baghdatis from the start.

He broke the Cypriot three times in the first set, with impressive power and accuracy from the baseline.

Sousa is one of the best movers on the ATP tour, and constantly out manoeuvred his older opponent around the court.

World No 36 Baghdatis tried to come back in the second set – and had chances on the Sousa serve in the latter stages – but couldn’t convert.

The former Australian Open finalist also struggled on serve for most of the match, with only 44 per cent of first serves landing.

Sousa then broke Baghdatis, who made a truckload of unforced errors, to get the chance to serve for the match.

He converted his third match point with an ace to seal the match in 72 minutes.

Ashburton water-skiing dynamos, Hugh and George Donaldson might not have picked up any major prizes at the Junior Worlds in Chile, but they left with some very positive results looking ahead to the future.

Travelling as part of a New Zealand contingent at the championships, the Kiwi side finished 9th overall – achieving their goal of a Top 10 finish.

The Ashburton twins, both picked up personal bests in the slalom event at the championships.

Ranked 12th prior to the event, Hugh’s goal was to make the finals. And after flying 48.3 metres in the preliminaries he was seeded 9th for the finals and produced a best of 49.9 metres which saw him elevated to 8th ranking.

In the tricks event, he fell prior to his last few high scoring toe tricks.

George shone in the trick run, standing up both passes and landing all four of his flips.

Hunt’s move ‘genius’

American co-promoter Bob Arum said they were “close to a deal” for a fight between Parker and Hughie Fury on either April 1 or 8 in New Zealand.

Tanaka has guided the Lisa Latta-trained Savabeel colt Lincoln Blue to stakes wins at his past two starts in the Gr.3 Wellington Stakes (1600m) at Trentham and the Listed Race 4 Life 3YO Salver (2100m) at Ellerslie.

“I haven’t ridden him since that last race but Lisa told me his trackwork has been very good,” Tanaka said.

“His wins were in easier fields and this time we are up against better horses so it’s a good test

for him. He’s got an awkward barrier draw but he’s got good gate speed and he’ll go forward.

I expect him to go a really good race. I’m looking forward to seeing how good he is.”

Tanaka rated Lincoln Blue as the best three-year-old he has ridden, placing him slightly ahead of Survived, whom he rode to win the Gr.3 Hawke’s Bay Cup (2200m) in his three-yearold season in 2013.

“I’ve never ridden a Derby horse before. It’s a new experi-

ence for me so it’s a good test for me too,” Tanaka said.

Lincoln Blue is the TAB’s $10 third favourite behind Hall Of Fame at $2.90 and Savile Row at $4.20 for today’s contest.

Brendon Hawtin is hoping the power will be with him at both ends of the North Island on Saturday.

He is chasing the thick end of the two-year-old stakes on offer at Ellerslie and at Trentham in a bid to have dual representation in the Karaka Million on January 29.

Mighty Power will contest the Countdown to Karaka 2017 at the northern venue while Padraig has gone south for the Wellington Provedoring 2YO Premier.

“They’re both by Power and it would be nice to get one of them through and two would be unbelievable,” Hawtin said.

“I’m really happy with both of them and they are 100 per cent sound which is key at this time of the year with the firm tracks.

“They’ve had uninterrupted preparations and neither horse has been pressured – they’ve got to where they are on their own.

“I think I’ve sent the right one to Wellington and the right one to Auckland.

“Mighty Power has got $1400 in the bank and looking at the order of entry for the Million he should get in if he wins.

“Padraig has only got $850 and even if he won at Ellerslie it might not be enough, the Wellington race is worth more money and he might need all of that – it’s going to be tight this year.”

Mighty Power was a debut second at New Plymouth last month while Padraig was third at his first appearance at Ellerslie during the Christmas carnival.

Tourism spending plunges in areas hit by Kaikoura quake

By Grant Bradley Latest tourism spending figures show the Kaikoura earthquake had a major impact on the region.

Overall the national tourism spend rose 8.7 per cent during the year to $25.76b and Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates released by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment show that the November 14 quake had a limited overall impact on tourism expenditure.

However, the earthquake made a significant impact on the total spend locally in North Canterbury,which includes Kaikoura and Hurunui Districts.

This region saw a 20 per cent fall in tourism spending in November (to $22 million) compared the same month in 2015.

The ASX200 had a strong final quarter of the year, benefiting from a rebound in oil and commodity prices, gaining 4.23 per cent.

For the year the index rose 6.99 per cent. The UK’s FTSE 100 had a very strong year rising 11.6 per cent, however, this was largely driven by the weaker pound. The NZ dollar was up 21.1 per cent against the pound in 2016, with the majority of the weakness being seen after the Brexit vote.

The NZX50 had a less impressive gain, rising 8.8 per cent for the year, after falling 6.5 per cent for the fourth quarter. However, bear in mind that over the past five years the NZX50 has had a stellar performance returning 110

milestone of reaching 20,000.

Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite continues to push to new highs in 2017, as was the trend at the end of last year.

Central bank meetings will resume next week, with the European Central Bank the first cab off the rank.

Both the Bank of Japan and the US Federal Reserve are due to meet before the end of the month while the Reserve Bank of Australia and Reserve Bank of New Zealand meet in early February.

Markets are starting to return to normal now after being open for two weeks.

Volumes are starting to increase and we are starting to see some news flow from companies.

Economically speaking there have been only a few major releases for investors to digest, however, there is plenty of action on the horizon.

US reporting season started this week, and although it is a slow start, things really start to ramp up in the next few weeks. Investors will be looking for corporate earnings to justify stretched valuations as US markets are at or near all-time highs.

016 was an interesting year for markets, with some particularly large events being noted, not for the major impact they had on share prices, but rather the shortlived shocks that were quickly forgotten.

One of the biggest of these major events was the Brexit in the UK. Pollsters called this incorrectly, thinking that the vote would be close, but ultimately that Brits would chose to remain with the European Union. However, this was not the case. Immediately following the result markets saw heavy declines, but surprisingly these were shortlived and within days the losses had been recouped.

The scenario was somewhat replicated in November when the US presidential election was held. Once again commentators predicted the wrong outcome, thinking that Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton would win.

However, when Republican nominee Donald Trump won, there were shockwaves in markets that were open at the time and the futures markets in the US indicated that the following day would see heavy losses. This was not to be the case, with the US market having the opposite reaction, rising instead, while elsewhere markets rebounded.

These two events, along with a number of others, have the potential to cause disruptions this year also.

Brexit hasn’t occurred yet, despite the calls for it to happen quickly, although the pound has fallen back significantly since the vote.

Donald Trump is still only president-elect so hasn’t yet taken the reins of the largest economy in the world, with his inauguration happening on January 20.

the previous year, while domestic visitor spending fell 13 per cent over the same period.

As the earthquake occurred midway through November, the full impacts on the regional economies in the affected areas are not completely shown. Nelson had the biggest percentage growth, rising 15 per cent during the year to November to $337m.

Otago was up 14 per cent to $3.5 billion and West Coast up 11 per cent to $475m.

In the immediate aftermath of the Kaikoura quake tourism operations were halted and while they are slowly recovering limited road access is making it difficult for visitors to reach the region.

Data for the month of December, due to be released on January 26 will give a clearer indication of how tourism spending in these areas has been affected, MBIE said.

Euthanasia debate will not die Sue Newman

N

ew Zealand’s euthanasia debate might just ramp up a notch or two now findings of a public opinion survey have been released.

The results were published in the New Zealand Medical Journal and showed very clearly that the majority of people support allowing people with incurable diseases to end their lives if they wished.

The number in opposition was very small.

As a country we’ve tried to pass bills around death with dignity and choice, but each time we’ve failed.

Politicians are understandably nervous about the issue. None want to have their names on a bill that, for whatever reason, opens the door to abuse.

The euthanasia debate, however, is one we clearly can’t close down.

It’s a scary subject, one that is impossible not to have an opinion about, even if that opinion has you swinging from one side to the other and ending up in the uncertain camp.

Most of us struggle to understand suicide, how a person could take their own life when the going gets tough. But essentially euthanasia is just suicide by another name.

We have options when it comes to our health. If we have a terminal illness we may choose not to have treatment and ultimately that might hasten our death but it still won’t allow us to determine the time or manner in which death occurs.

Euthanasia does this, it allows us to bypass a slow, lingering, and often, undignified exit.

For the right to die to become enshrined as an end of life option in New Zealand however, the safeguards would need to be almost impossibly tight, but even then, how would it be possible to block every loophole that could lead to persuasion or coercion by another party?

The tough thing to get your head around is that euthanasia isn’t just a medical treatment, it’s permanent.

If you have a limb removed for whatever reason, you know the outcome – life may never be the same but you know that from the outset.

If you elect to die, again there’s only one outcome, but no one knows exactly what that is.

The Shift Engineer will be part of the team responsible for the safe operation of the plant refrigeration systems. You will also assist with planned maintenance along with the installation of new plant equipment.

Agricultural Spray Truck Operator Soper Agri spraying is a family owned broad acre spraying business. We cover Mid Canterbury, from the Ashburton river to the Rangitata river, hills to sea.

The Sales and Distribution office in Ashburton is looking to employ an office administrator to replace an established position. This is a permanent, part time position of between 25 to 30 hours a week Monday to Friday.

Operating 3 Mitsubishi Canter/Fuso trucks and a self-propelled all 24 metres wide.

The role will include: • Entering customer orders • Consumable purchasing and maintenance • Processing creditors • Entering production data and offering clerical support • Greeting customers and answering incoming calls • Booking flights and accommodation for staff • Assisting the Export Administrator in completing export documentation • Some general house keeping in the office and break rooms
